“When a 16-year-old from Brooklyn was diagnosed with a rare cancer, the doctors told her parents ‘let her enjoy the time she has left.’ Chaim Medical wouldn’t give up. Our oncology experts combed the world - searched next year’s science - looked into treatments just being developed – and enrolled her in a clinical trial that saved her life. Today, she’s back at school – because Chaim Medical wouldn’t stop searching for a cure." RABBI LIPA HAGER DIRECTOR, DIVISION OF ONCOLOGY AND CLINICAL TRIALS RESEARCH

(Re: My Shemittah Kitchen, Issue 117) As I am getting ready for a trip to Eretz Yisroel to visit two of my children and their families, I was so excited to read the Shemittah article. I wasn’t planning to do much sightseeing during my trip; I want to focus on spending time with my dear grandchildren. However, when I saw that someone wrote about a class trip her daughter took to Komemiyus, where they saw the inactive farms from up-close and were able to tour the fields, I knew this is a rare opportunity, and I want to plan such a visit during my trip. The information came at the perfect time for me. Thank you! Mrs. Schmeltzer

CONNECTING THE DOTS
(Re: The Black Sheep) During a recent visit to Primark, I bought a bracelet with cute little Minnie Mouse charms for my daughter. There was one charm, however, that had some kind of symbol that didn’t seem to fit in with the rest. It had a moon and a star, and it didn’t look very familiar. I gave my daughter the bracelet, but removed that charm. I was wondering about it for a while, and then I read The Black Sheep, where Ariella was given a necklace by that Muslim woman. Reading that story made me look into the charm I took off, and as it turns out, that
moon and star is an Islamic symbol. So I want to thank you for helping me connect the dots, and I also want to caution others who may be purchasing these bracelets unknowingly that you probably don’t want those on your daughters’ wrists. A Reader

DEAR EDITOR, Firstly, I must applause you for an outstanding magazine week by week. I especially appreciate the opportunity to share my experience with the public so I can enlighten those struggling with what I can now blessedly refer to as a ‘past nightmare’. Unlike my previous babies, the arrival of this new baby boy brought along a completely different level of challenges. This baby was suffering from acid reflux, along with all its nightmarish struggles. There was just no moment of relief. Needless to say, we’ve tried everything. We’ve seen several doctors, tried multiple natural remedies and followed countless advice from well-meaning friends and relatives, to no reprieve. Until the day we started him on Pepcid. Or so we thought. Indeed, Pepcid did wonders to our baby! He became a happy, content, giggly baby. Until he wasn’t. Shortly after starting him on this new med, our baby broke out into a terrible, oozing, fire hot rash all over his body! I was in complete despair! I had given up entirely.

Seeing my anguish, a close relative mentioned that I try the Miracle Clay from Nature’s Cure. I thanked her for her advice but didn’t take it any further, after all, nothing has helped. But this relative urged me on, saying that she’d heard so many great stories – many of which were digestive issues as H-phylori, IBS, diarrhea and skin issues, acne, allergies, parasites among others- which were completely healed with this product. I could lose nothing. I resorted to giving it my last shot. And indeed, the last shot it was! For there was no need to search elsewhere. B’chasdei Hashem, with the guidance of Mrs. Rosenbaum, founder of Nature’s Cure, my baby was completely healed! No reflux, no side effects! The results were astonishing. Miracle Clay truly is a miracle! If there’s anyone out there struggling like I was, suffer no more! Miracle Clay is the answer. All the best, DH

PARSHAS YISRO A Makom Torah
The Yidden stood at the foot of the mountain, preparing for the awesome revelation of Matan Torah. The Gemara in Maseches Shabbos explains that the fact that “they stood at the bottom of the mountain” teaches that Hakadosh Baruch Hu held the mountain above their heads and warned, “If you accept the Torah, good; if not, there will be your burial site.” The word “sham — there” is strange. Shouldn’t it have said “here”? After all, if Bnei Yisroel would not accept the Torah, they would be buried at that very spot, beneath the mountain hovering above their heads. REB ISSER ZALMEN MELTZER was still a yungerman, albeit an accomplished talmid chacham, when he participated in a gathering of rabbanim. At one point, he was speaking in learning with Reb Moshe Denishevski, the Rav of Slabodka, when he noticed a curious thing. Every time the Rav of Stavisk, Rav Chaim Leib Mishkovski, passed, Reb Moshe would stand up to his full height. This surprised Reb Isser Zalmen, for Reb Moshe was known to be a talmid chacham in his own right. Why was he troubling himself so? Soon Reb Moshe picked up on Reb Isser Zalmen’s wonder, and he explained, “Listen, yungerman! Do you know who Reb Chaim Leib is? Reb Chaim Leib is a truly holy Yid and learns Torah with genuine purity. Ever since he was young, he only learns Torah while standing, and with outstanding hasmadah. Let me tell you a story…” And this is the story he shared. Some years ago, there was a terrible bout of cholera in the area. It claimed the lives of young and old, and people were dying like flies. The cholera spread like wildfire, taking hold of every city in the area. Surprisingly, the town of Eishyshok was unaffected. The epidemic seemed to have skipped over her borders. At that time, Reb Chaim Leib was learning in the local kollel in Eishyshok, immersed in his studies with wondrous

diligence. One Shabbos, the town’s Rav, Rav Avraham Shmuel Rabinowitz, known as the Amudei Eish, ascended the steps to the aron kodesh and said, “Rabbosai, baruch Hashem, here in our town, everyone seems to be healthy. The mageifah has not penetrated our gates. I just want to publicly announce and make it clear that this miracle is not in my zechus, but in the merit of the person standing there in the corner, delving in the Torah with utter purity. Reb Chaim Leib Stavisker — he is the one who is stopping the epidemic from entering our village.” A few days later, Reb Chaim Leib received a letter from his father-in-law. “Because your wife — my daughter — is terribly fearful of contracting the disease, I ask that you both come to my home and stay with us.” Reb Chaim Leib immediately obliged and traveled to his father-in-law’s town. Astoundingly, as soon as Reb Chaim Leib departed from Eishyshok, the dreaded disease passed through the gates of the city. Suddenly, dozens of townspeople contracted cholera. Reb Moshe Denishevski concluded his tale. He didn’t need to add a word. Torah gives life. It was as simple as that. When a Yid learns Torah with purity, he protects not only himself; the shemirah expands like an umbrella and

Clearly, the Gemara did not consider the threat of “kafa aleihem har k’gigis” to be a one-off warning directed to the Yidden of that generation alone. Rather, it is an important foundation for us to internalize. Throughout our history, in any place where Torah is not the primary focus of life and Yidden do not learn or engage in a Torah lifestyle, the shemirah disappears and “there” — that very spot — turns into a mass burial site. On the other hand, in every generation, in every locale where the Yidden accept the Torah and toil to learn it, we will live calmly and peacefully — because the Torah gives life to those who learn and live by it. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

Did You Know? At Har Sinai, the Yidden did not merely hear the words that Hashem spoke. They actually saw the words, which appeared as a fiery substance. Each fiery commandment traveled around the entire camp and approached each Yid individually, asking if he was prepared to accept the commandment and all associated halachos. Only once each Yid agreed, did the fiery words that they saw engrave themselves on the luchos for all eternity.

Swirbie pods are all the rage, giving users access to delicious and all-natural fruit and veggie smoothies without the hassle BY: YA AKOV GRUNBAUM
Are you someone who actually consumes enough fruits and vegetables every day? With viruses of all sorts the talk of the day, the modern diet has come into focus for many. Whereas it was once said that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, the past few decades have seen smoothies take its place as the way to load up on the many health benefits that only nature can provide. However, when it comes to smoothie-making, many people seem to think that you are either the type who has a kitchen filled with blenders and gadgets, a fridge loaded with weird leafy greens, and a freezer stocked with out-of-season fruit, or… you’re not. But most do find themselves somewhere in the middle, wishing they could make smoothies part of their morning routine but only occasionally succeeding in doing so. There is one thing that everyone agrees upon — that is, the hope that making smoothies could be easier, less messy, and use ingredients more readily at hand. Enter Swirbie, the innovative solution to regularly enjoying smoothies, all year

round! And by enjoying, we mean both the pleasure of a delicious and tasty drink, as well as the nutritional boost only nature’s fruits and vegetables can offer your body. And while people often mistakenly associate smoothies with a summer beverage, the benefits of these smoothies extend beyond seasonal use and have instead become the staple they should be in every home — twelve months a year.
What are Swirbies? Swirbies are all-natural fruit and vegetable instant smoothie blends. Sold in frozen pods, users quickly pop a few into a cup before adding a liquid of their choice such as milk, fruit juice, or almond milk for a low-calorie alternative. Wait a few minutes for Swirbies to soften, shake it up, and voila — enjoy a Swirbie-licious refreshing drink. Swirbie offers seven individual flavors, each loaded with natural antioxidants, vitamins and other nutritional benefits: strawberry, blueberry, mango, peach, spinach, banana and açaí. Now these superfoods can become accessible and convenient just by opening your freezer door. In today’s day
and age, between COVID-19, the flu and everything in between, the more we can boost our immune system with these sources of goodness on a daily basis, the more protection we offer our bodies.
The Swirbie edge In speaking with the makers of the product, a number of additional benefits of Swirbie pods came to light. Since smoothie pods include just one main ingredient, users can create their own combination by mixing and matching flavors to meet their preferences. Unlike other available products, with Swirbie, users are not locked into a premade recipe they wouldn’t personally choose. Feel like having a strawberry-mango smoothie for breakfast? Want to load up on some greens with a spinach combo? You select what you want in your smoothie! Another bonus of using the Swirbie pods is the user’s ability to determine what consistency smoothie they prefer by modifying the ratio of liquid to pods and the amount of time they wait for pods to soften. Want it thick and full of texture? Prefer pieces of ice rather than a smooth consistency? Want to add four ounces versus eight ounces of liquid? Go right ahead. It’s all customizable. The package guidelines are strictly just that — guidelines. They are meant to be tailored by you to meet your individual taste and preference. With Swirbie, the smoothie world is literally at your fingertips! All you need to do is pop, drop, wait and shake. Swirbie pods are also very versatile and can be enjoyed in many ways beyond the smoothie cup. Some users report savoring its intense flavor by using them as mini ice pops. Others have incorporated them into fruit soups and other delectable desserts. Author and influencer Chanie Apfelbaum of Busy in Brooklyn shared, “I love the convenience of Swirbie smoothie pods. Whether it’s to add a boost of flavor to seltzer, a cocktail, smoothie or acai bowl, the pods are innovative, easy and delicious.” Since some of the ingredients require meticulously checking for tola’im (infestation), unfortunately many people avoid enjoying these foods altogether. To address this concern, Swirbie hired the respected Rabbi Goldstein from the Skolya hashgacha to ensure that all halachic requirements are diligently met

“WE LOVE SWIRBIE SMOOTHIE CUBES BECAUSE THEY ARE QUICK AND EASY TO USE! IT’S MUCH EASIER AND QUICKER THAN CUTTING UP AND BLENDING ITEMS. ONCE THAWED, IT’S THE PERFECT TEXTURE TO SATISFY CRAVINGS!” -Nutrition by Tanya

and exceeded so that what is healthy for our body is also healthy for our soul.
Swirbies are for everyone — yes, even you One of Swirbie’s biggest fans is Tanya of the popular Nutrition by Tanya brand, who often shares Swirbie-based recipes and encourages members to make it part of their healthy day. When asked why she is such an ardent promoter, Tanya’s response was unequivocal: “We love Swirbie Smoothie cubes because they are quick and easy to use! It’s much easier and quicker than cutting up and blending items. Once thawed, it’s the perfect texture to satisfy cravings!” The Swirbie website (www.swirbie. com) offers simple smoothie recipes using the available flavors. A quick scroll through helps visitors realize the endless possibilities that start with a simple frozen item that takes up almost no space in their freezer. But be forewarned: Once you start with Swirbie, you may never go back to your presmoothie days. We spoke with Mr. Soffer from Quality Frozen Foods who distributes the product to find out how he pitches this revolutionary line. His response was, “Swirbie was developed to enable consumers to enjoy all the nutritional benefits of having a daily smoothie all year round while eliminating the hassle and the prep that’s typically involved. No need to wash, peel, cut, blend, clean up, etc. It’s quick, simple, nutritious and delicious.” As expected, people are buying what Swirbie is selling. In the short time since it’s been on the market, it has brought healthy and delicious living to countless frum consumers who previously never imagined it feasible. One dedicated customer remarked that “Since I started using Swirbies, I feel guilty going a day without them — and so, I don’t!” Swirbies have also increased smoothie usage in another way. Even those who drink smoothies religiously generally

avoid them on days when they don’t want to make the kitchen dirty or on Shabbos and yom tov when blenders can’t be used. But with Swirbie, smoothies can suddenly be a seven-day reality for everyone! And it’s not just health-conscious adults making the most of it. Children, who desperately need more natural goodness in their lives to counterbalance the junk they eat, can easily drop a pod or two into their milk or juice before they run out the door. Now, they too can enjoy the flavorful and colorful Swirbie experience. So, once again, are you among those people who consume enough fruits and vegetables? With Swirbie, the answer is always a resounding YES! Swirbie products are available in the freezer aisle of kosher supermarkets. They are sold in seven flavors and carry the hechsher of Rabbi Goldstein from Skolya and the OU.

Summer Camps Sue Catskills Town for Discrimination Eight unnamed summer camps and one school have filed suit in federal court in Albany, charging Ulster County’s Town of Wawarsing with imposing discriminatory regulations that would make it nearly impossible for them to improve or expand their properties. The Times Herald-Record reported that Wawarsing instituted new zoning laws this past fall that created an “overlay district” for summer camps. The town described the new regulations as being designed to protect the town’s rural character and open space, while also ensuring that camps in the district would be compatible with surrounding areas. Wawarsing also said that the overlay district was created to prevent camps from having “adverse town-wide impacts” and to make sure that they could be adequately served by local sewer and water systems. Under the updated zoning laws, new camps in Wawarsing would be limited to two specific sections of the town and would be subjected to extremely stringent rules, including a maximum occupancy limit of 400, bunkhouses limits of ten people, and a total ban on loudspeakers as well as structures or activities within 250 feet of the property line. New camps would also be required to install opaque fencing around their entire perimeter, placed a minimum of 75 feet away from their property lines. While the zoning does not apply to existing camps, those that make any changes to their properties or expand into the new overlay district would be subject to the new regulations. Approximately 4,300 children attend Orthodox Jewish camps in Wawarsing each summer. The lawsuit comes as no surprise. Several camp represen-

tatives and lawyers warned that they would pursue legal action if the zoning was passed when it was discussed at a pair of town board meetings that were held in October. Ellenville Mayor Jeff Kaplan, speaking as legal counsel for the camps during those meetings, pulled no punches, drawing parallels between the fencing requirement and the persecution of Jews during World War II. “You can call it a camp overlay,” said Kaplan. “I call it a ghetto.” Lawyers for the camps have said that the new zoning laws were deliberately designed to make it impossible for them to continue operating in Wawarsing and charge that they are in violation of the Constitution, the federal Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act, and New York State law. “Over the last few years, the town has harassed the Orthodox Jewish camps through targeted enforcement of local ordinances,” said lawyer Eric Treene. “The town has also abused its municipal power by intentionally creating unnecessary obstacles and delays for Orthodox Jewish camps, making repair or expansion efforts a bureaucratic nightmare.”
Blow to Biden as Supreme Court Blocks Vaccine Mandate for Large Private Businesses Three days after an Occupational Safety and Health Administration emergency measure went into effect requiring private companies with 100 or more employees to institute weekly vaccinate-or-test requirements, the Supreme Court struck down the requirement, saying the agency had exceeded its legal authority. The measure, which would have affected more than 80 million people and would also have forced employees to wear masks at work, was struck down by a vote of six to three. An unsigned opinion written by the Supreme Court’s conservative majority said that the mandate was unprecedented. “Indeed, although Congress has enacted significant legislation addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, it has declined to enact any measure similar to what OSHA has promulgated here,” wrote the judges. President Biden, who has been advocating strongly for the mandate, expressed his disappointment in the decision and called on businesses to institute their own vaccination requirements. The Supreme Court voted five to four to enforce a nationwide vaccination mandate for health care workers, with religious and medical exemptions

At-Home COVID-19 Tests Now Available for Free With omicron refusing to quit and long lines an unpleasant reality at COVID-19 testing centers, the federal government is offering some relief, with free home COVID-19 tests now available. The Associated Press reported that four free test kits are available per household at the COVIDTests.gov website, with no shipping or handling charges. President Joe Biden said that he expects tests to ship within seven to twelve days of ordering. A phone ordering line is also expected to be launched at an unnamed future date. The White House has ordered one billion COVID-19 home tests, and provide insurers will now be required to reimburse covered individuals for the cost of up to eight home COVID-19 tests per month. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised testing before gathering with family members, the elderly, the unvaccinated or the immunocompromised. At-home testing is also recommended for those who have COVID-19 symptoms including cough, fever, sore throats, respiratory issues and muscle aches, as well as those who may have been exposed to COVID-19.
Statewide Eviction Moratorium Expires Nearly two years after it was first enacted at the height of the pandemic, a statewide ban that prevented landlords from evicting tenants for failing to pay their rent has finally come to an end. That reality leaves as many as 600,000 commercial and residential renters in New York State potentially facing evictions, according to data from the United States Department of Treasury and the 2020 census. The state’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program still provides some protection for tenants, reported NBC New York. Tenants experiencing COVID-related financial difficulties
have been allowed to file court papers to prevent their evictions, with landlords tasked with proving that no such economic hardships actually exist. The state’s rental assistance application portal had been closed on November 15, but was ordered reopened by a judge last week. New York acknowledged that while the portal may be live once again, federal monies that were being used to help tenants had run out for most areas in the state. But the application process itself offers tenants protection, with landlords prevented from evicting those who have submitted a case to the state. Governor Kathy Hochul defended her decision to let the moratorium expire last week, reported Hamodia, noting that New York had extended its tenant protections last September even when other states had not. Hochul petitioned the federal government for $1 billion in additional rent aid in the fall, with New York receiving just $27 million, and she said that she would continue pressing for more federal aid to help struggling tenants. Tenant advocates have been pushing for a Good Cause Eviction bill in New York, which would only allow landlords to displace tenants for not paying their rent or otherwise violating the terms of their lease agreement. Under the proposed bill, rent increases could not be used as a reason for eviction, a condition that would unfairly tip the scales in favor of tenants, said Joseph Strasburg, president of the Rent Stabilization Association, which represents 25,000 landlords in New York City. Strasburg also noted that the Good Cause bill would place additional financial burdens on landlords, those costs impacting their ability to properly maintain their properties, which would only hurt tenants, reported Gothamist. Speaking last week before the moratorium expired, Strasburg had been advocating for the state to pursue additional federal aid and to fully reopen housing courts in order to help landlords, many of whom are also facing considerable pandemic-related economic difficulties. “It’s time to end the eviction moratorium and put an end to tenants skipping the rent because there are no repercussions for not paying,” said Strasburg. Those words rang hollow for the crowd who gathered in downtown Brooklyn last Shabbos to burn eviction notices and to call on the governor to extend the moratorium, reported News 12. “We have people out of work still, and despite all of our efforts, the state still hasn’t come up with a resolution for this problem,” said Jessica Dunn of the Crown Heights Tenant Union. “We don’t see why we have to be the ones to lose our homes when they can’t do their jobs.”
Next on Adams Agenda: Trimming NYC’s Vehicle Fleet Having been photographed widely riding the subway to City Hall since taking office, Mayor Eric Adams is taking aim at New York City’s fleet of 29,718 official vehicles, the largest of its kind in the country. The New York Post reported that Adams wants to trim the number of sedans, SUVs, police cars and garbage trucks used by staffers by 50 to 70 percent. “It is unimaginable that we have so many city ve64

hicles moving around Manhattan,” said Adams. Adams called on city employees to lead by example and to use mass transit and ride-sharing programs. Throughout the city, 2,857 employees have take-home vehicles for personal use, which come with free gas and often also have toll privileges. The number of city cars rose 21% under the de Blasio administration, a surprising reality for a mayor who spoke often about reducing carbon emissions in the city. The city’s fleet hit an all-time high of 31,159 vehicles in February 2019, with nearly 3,500 employees assigned cars for their personal use. De Blasio ultimately came through on his pledge to reduce that number by 1,000 vehicles over the next two years. Spectrum News reported that de Blasio came out strongly against cars in August 2020, saying that he would never again own one. “My advice to New Yorkers is, ‘Do not buy a car,’” said de Blasio. “Cars are the past. The future is going to be mass transit, biking, walking.” Adams hopes to pare things down even further, getting the fleet down to what he described as a “barebones minimum.”

Adams Petitions for Waiver to Hire Brother as Security Chief Coming under fire for hiring his brother as his executive director of mayoral security, Mayor Eric Adams has reached out to the city’s Conflicts of Interest Board for a waiver to approve his appointment. Hamodia reported that Bernard Adams, a former sergeant of the NYPD, had been working most recently as the assistant director for parking at Virginia Commonwealth University. The mayor has tapped his brother to lead his security team, describing him as the most qualified person for the job and noting that protection is a very personal issue. “I trust my brother,” said Adams. “My brother understands me, and if I had to put my life in someone’s hands, I want to put it in the hands of the person that I trust deeply.” Adams expressed concern that as an African American mayor, he could be a target for white supremacists as well as what he called “increased threats.” His preference for mingling with New Yorkers, as he has done on the subway and by riding a bicycle to a recent interview, also warrants the need for tighter security, said Adams. “I don’t want to be away from my public,” explained Adams. “Many people saw me take the subway. That is how I am going to move about the city.” Former mayor Bill de Blasio received a waiver that cleared the way for him to hire his wife Chirlane McCray as the chairperson for the city’s charitable fund, but she received no payment for her work. Bernard Adams has been part of his brother’s security team since December 30, a position that pays $210,000 per year. It is unclear if Adams needs a waiver to hire his brother or if he can keep his brother on staff should his request for a waiver be denied.

CHAPTER FORTY-ONE RECAP: Sarah
Reiness prepares to watch her sister’s kids. On her way out of her house, she suddenly meets up with her client Ella Rothman. A traumatized Ariella tells Sarah Reiness all about Aliza/Aziza. They throw the necklace into the sea and talk about where Sarah would like to go from there.
“I
don’t want to ruin any of your plans,” Ariella said, clasping her hands together. “It’s enough that I delayed you until now. But if… if you could just bring me to the train station, and accompany me inside to make sure I get on the train and that everything is all right, I’d be very grateful.” “I don’t think there’s a train leaving anytime soon,” Sarah said calmly, “and you didn’t ruin any of our plans. A neighbor put my sister’s children to sleep, and the key is waiting for me on the windowsill. So it doesn’t really matter when we get there.” “Get where?” “To my sister’s children. She lives in a new development, and her oldest is in the hospital right now, so she and her husband are with him.” “Oh.” Ariella closed her eyes. So that was Sarah going to suggest? That she go back to Miriam, her very first hostess? She really, really didn’t like that idea. But if that was her only option… “I’d rather not wake my first hostess…” she murmured at last, “but I may have no choice.” “I thought of a different solution.” Sarah didn’t even try to hide her smile. “You can come with me, to my sister’s house. There’s room there for you.” “B-but…a guest can’t bring a guest…” Ariella stammered, knowing as she did so that her protest was hardly convincing. “I’m not going as a guest now, so let me handle my sister,” Sarah said, and the car began moving forward.

Ariella huddled in her seat in silence. She wasn’t usually like this; she was usually so independent. And yet, in her present situation, being so vulnerable and yes, dependent on others, all she felt regarding Sarah’s offer was tremendous relief. And she didn’t even try to hide it. She leaned her head back and closed her eyes, not even bothering to look out the window. She had no idea where they were or where they were going, and it amused her that she was now putting so much faith in the people that had led her to Acco in the first place. But therein lay a problem… She suddenly froze in her seat, and her hands tightened around her handbag. She was trusting them, indeed. Yet Sarah was also trusting her — Ella, her dear client. But she was a fraud. No, not really a fraud, perhaps, just an impostor. But still... Every passing second in the pleasantly warm car stifled Ariella even more, and she felt the car doors close in on her. She took a deep breath, wondering if the best thing right now would be to ask them to stop so she could get out of the car. “Are you all right, Ella?” Sarah asked quietly. “You still don’t look good.” Ariella nodded. “I-I think so. It’s just that… things aren’t so simple for me right now, in a lot of ways.” “Do you want to talk about it? Or would you rather talk when we get to my sister’s house?” Sarah thought quickly. Bassi would be very busy in the coming days, but if it was possible, she would be the best person to host Ella, providing, of course, that they clicked when they met. Bassi was easygoing and a great conversationalist, and Sarah was sure that Ella would feel very comfortable with her. Maybe that would be a good solution for them both. While Bassi would be with Yisroel Meir in the hospital — which would probably be for some period of time going forward — Ella could run the house. Perhaps Bassi could pay her, or Ella would receive room and board in exchange. Truthfully, Bassi needed this kind of help even when things were routine. Reb Elazar turned on some quiet music, and the delicate voice of a child singing a solo spilled into the car. Ariella didn’t even hear the words. The Reinesses were trying so hard to be helpful. And she was taking advantage of their kindness with every moment that she sat here; after all, was her whole story not a bald-faced lie? She opened her eyes and looked to the left. The car had turned onto a wide path that looked like it had been forcibly torn from the main road and stretched into the thicket of trees on the side. And the darkness grew heavier, as if they were under a dense black canopy, as they drove. “Do you remember where to turn?” Sarah addressed her husband, leaning forward. “It’s the third right.” “Yes,” Rabbi Reiness murmured from behind the wheel. “It’s just that in the dark, everything here looks the same.” “Hey, there’s a light on over there, on the right,” Sarah said. “Did they put up lighting?” “Looks like it. Rather improvised, but it does make the whole place look a bit more welcoming.” Rabbi Reiness turned the wheel toward the dim light, and Ariella studied the wooden sign hanging underneath: Peninat Hagalil. Sarah grinned. “Sounds like the name of a fancy hotel,

no? But I think you’ll like it here, Ella.” “It looks like a cute place,” Ariella said, her voice cracking. Her hoarseness was even more pronounced than usual tonight. They drove another few minutes, and then the car slowed down. Peering into the darkness, Sarah and Ariella climbed out. “Let’s take our things and get into the house,” Sarah said as she and Ariella stood shivering outside the car. “Brrr… it’s much colder here than in Acco!” But Ariella did not make a move to follow her. “I want to tell you something,” she said. Her eyes were fixed on the handle of her suitcase. “Then you can decide if you indeed want to host me.” Sarah chuckled and pushed the gate to the yard open. It looked like a loving hand had colored it orange, and then added shapes to the design. “First thing, we’re going inside, Ella. And whatever you have to tell me, I’ll be happy to hear it there.” “I’m not so sure you’ll be happy to hear it...” Sarah walked toward the house. “Even if you stole the Statue of Liberty, you’re still coming inside. Once we’re there, I’ll decide whether or not to call the police. The last thing you need is to get pneumonia.” “The wind whipped at Ariella, and she felt herself wishing she could fly away with it; she didn’t even care to where. But she obediently followed the older woman into the heated foyer of the house.
he was looking for on the shtender. “I think I’ll make an early night,” he said. “I want to get up early to get back to the bachurim in time for Shacharis.” “Fine. I’ll prepare the beds, but it’ll take me some time to get to bed myself.” She nodded toward the kitchen, where Ariella had stationed herself. “Looks like I’ve got quite a conversation ahead of me.” “Remember that you have quite a day ahead of you tomorrow, too,” he said as he picked up the Gemara. “Your sister’s children have got lots of energy, bli ayin hara.” “So do I,” Sarah rejoined with a laugh. “Do you want a hot drink?”
too bad. The problem is that I sometimes need a cookie dipped in lots of chocolate, and nothing else will do.” She reached into her little suitcase and pulled out a bag, emptying it onto a brown glass plate. “Now, onward,” she said, as she rubbed her hands together. “But maybe you should eat something first. You certainly don’t want me to throw you out into the cold while you’re still hungry, right?” “If you do throw me out, you’d be very right, and it doesn’t really matter how you’d do it.” Ariella looked at the floor and the carpet of crumbs under the table. “Nu, so what do you want to tell me? That you’re a dressed-up Arab woman, and Aziza sent you? That you’re the one who knocked my nephew out of the tree, and that’s why he got so badly injured? That you’ve been spying on me, and that the whole thing with the hoarseness is just a good cover story?” “Bull’s eye.” “Which of the three options?” “The last one.” “You’re not serious, right?” Sarah broke a cookie in half. “You’re forgetting that you’re speaking to a speech therapist, Ella. Your hoarseness is real, and you can’t fool me.” “It’s the only real thing about the whole story.” Ariella looked at her glass of tea, but didn’t touch it. And not only because of its unappetizing greenishbrown color. “So, what’s not real? Is your name not really Ella?” “It’s a nickname that my grandmother gave me, but who’d use it?” “Well, I do. And Rothman?” “That’s also real, I forgot.” “I see. So we’re starting to discover some truths here,” Sarah said. “And I’m sorry for asking, but do you have a husband?” “No.” Ariella almost smiled. “I really am a widow.” “Oh, so is that part true, too? One second — I want to make a bracha on my tea.”
“I want to tell you something,” Ariella said. Her eyes were fixed on the handle of her suitcase.
* * * * * “I don’t think I’ll go back to Acco now; it’s late,” Elazar said. He stood with his hands clasped behind his back as he faced his brother-in-law’s seforim shelves. “I assume that Aryeh allows me to use his seforim?” “Bassi told me to feel at home and use whatever we need.” In the end Elazar found the Gemara 74

“No, thanks.” Elazar opened the Gemara, and Sarah went to the kitchen. “Did the kettle boil yet?” she asked the figure sitting hunched over at the small table. “I think so,” Ella replied, without raising her eyes. “There’s no coffee in my sister’s cabinets, of course, but she has all kinds of herbal brews. Do you want something?” Sarah opened the cabinet. “Chamomile, ginger, citrus and mint, passion fruit and coastal plants — what is that? — rose with a touch of fennel, and Chinese green tea. Do you want them all together?” Ella responded with something that resembled a smile. “Fine, I’ll prepare for you whatever I’m making for myself. This coastal plant and passion fruit combination sounds the most exotic to me,” she said cheerfully. She spent a few moments fussing over a pair of cups, and then carried them to the table. “I brought cookies from home, even though my sister’s sesame cookies aren’t

Ariella looked around the kitchen as Sarah calmly sipped her tea. It was an interesting kitchen: a mix of new cabinets and gleaming faucets that looked like they’d just been installed alongside a collection of objects that were more typical of an antique, country-style kitchen. Some of those objects were a black, sooty kettle that stood on the stove; spice containers in almost every available corner on the countertop; clusters of garlic and jalapeno peppers hanging on the wall near the window; and a large shelf with bulging fabric sacks that contained — Ariella didn’t stand up to peek, but the labels on them clearly stated their

contents — rice, wheat, lentils and dried split peas. The kitchen wasn’t orderly. At all. And perhaps that’s why she found herself liking it so much. Sarah finished her tea along with three cookies, and Ariella was still quiet. When Ariella opened her mouth, Sarah stopped her. “From what I heard so far, I understood just one thing — that you are confused, hungry and tired. So maybe you should eat something, go to sleep, recover a bit, and we’ll talk in the morning?” “No, I can’t wait for tomorrow.” “Fine, but I refuse to wait any longer for you to drink your tea and eat some cookies. I’m sure it’s ages since you last ate.” Another two minutes of silence ensued, during which Ariella forced herself to put something into her mouth, even if just to appease Sarah. She had no appetite. “So, it’s true that I didn’t really lie to you,” she said once her own teacup was empty. The taste of the tea was pretty decent, surprisingly enough. “But I really did not come to Acco for you to treat my hoarseness.” “We know that already. So why did you come?” “To spy on you.” Ariella rubbed at a crumb of chocolate that had landed on the table. “To spy on me!” Sarah grinned widely. “Who for? The president of Syria?” But suddenly, a thought popped into her mind, and she struggled to keep her smile in place as she asked, “Oh, that Arab clan? From Shikovitzer’s property?” Ariella looked at her. Despite Sarah Reiness’s grin, there was something serious about her question. “No,” she replied quietly. “My parents sent me. Or maybe I volunteered, and they just agreed — I don’t really remember.” “And what did you want to discover? Professional secrets from the carpentry shop? But you wouldn’t find those in my clinic — nor with my husband. He’s the manager in description only, not really on a practical level.” “No, the carpentry shop didn’t interest me that much.” Ariella stared at the dregs of her tea and took a deep breath. “I’m Osher Erenbaum’s sister.” To be continued…

COMFORTING KIELBASA CABBAGE PASTA Building upon the traditional cabbage pasta, the kielbasa infuses the entire dish with abundant flavor.
INGREDIENTS 1 bag bowtie pasta 3 large Spanish onions, julienned 1 (16 oz.) bag shredded cabbage 2 T. sugar 1½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. black pepper ⅛ tsp. cayenne pepper ¼ tsp. thyme, optional ⅛ tsp. sage, optional 1 lb. smoked turkey kielbasa
DIRECTIONS 1. Cook the pasta according to package directions. 2. Slice the kielbasa in half-inch slices. 3. In a skillet over medium heat, saute the onions and cabbage until they’re translucent. Season to taste. 4. Add the kielbasa and cook for an additional 10 minutes, until it’s heated through. 5. Serve the vegetables and kielbasa over the pasta, or toss together to mix.
WARM WINTER ROOT SAUSAGE SALAD Vibrant in both color and flavor, the root vegetables and protein make this simple enough as a salad and filling enough as a dish. Slightly sweet, slightly tangy, this vinaigrette packs a flavor punch, but you can stick to olive oil, salt and pepper if you prefer a lighter dressing. To create this salad, choose your favorite variety of root vegetables. In this recipe I used mini radishes, beets, golden beets, carrots, sweet potatoes, knob celery and parsnip.
SALAD 1 box mixed greens 1 (12 oz.) package sausage Root vegetables of your choice Olive oil Honey Salt and pepper, to taste
MAPLE-DIJON VINAIGRETTE ⅓ cup olive oil ¼ cup maple syrup 1½ T. white wine or apple cider vinegar 2 tsp. Dijon mustard Salt and pepper, to taste
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°. 2. Cut the sausages in half lengthwise and slice them into half-inch pieces. Arrange the pieces on a parchment-lined baking pan. 3. Peel and cut your vegetables into slices, sticks or chunks. Mix 1 tablespoon oil and 1 tablespoon honey per root vegetable and toss to coat, keeping each type of vegetable separate from the others. Season with salt and pepper. Lay the vegetables on a parchment-lined pan. 4. Place the pans in the oven. Roast the sausages for about 10 to 15 minutes, until golden. 5. Roast the vegetables for about 30 to 60 minutes until they’re cooked through and their edges are lightly golden. Keeping each type of vegetable separate allows for individual baking time according to each vegetable’s specific needs. 6. Serve the roasted vegetables and sausage over greens, drizzled lightly with vinaigrette.

very joke carries a kernel of truth. Years ago, when fax machines were the hot new item on the market, a popular badchan remarked that he doesn’t understand why people find the technology so impressive. After all, the machine is connected to the wall, where a network of wires leads it all the way to the recipient’s machine. What was amazing, he observed, is that he can drop off an envelope in a blue metal box on the corner, and not too long thereafter, have it just show up at the designated house — with no wires involved!
Funny, right? Well, not if you’re intimately familiar with what goes into moving nearly 150 billion pieces of mail across our country every year. The United States Postal Service has an annual budget of $82,000,000,000 (yes, that’s 82 billion), but before you go blaming government largess, remember that we are charged some of the lowest rates in the world to send letters, and the USPS performs a gargantuan task almost seamlessly and without interruption. The post office has what they call a Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) with all the prices and standards relevant to sending domestic mail. The most recent DMM is a mind-numbing 1,321 pages thick (and luckily, the editors at The Boro Park View didn’t quiz me on what’s in there). It is doubtful that anyone has actually memorized the entire monstrosity; the closest thing we could find was Mr. Naftula Babad of Postage Plus in Monsey. For this week’s issue, we spoke with Mr. Babad, an authority in the frum mailing world, to hear some things you might not know about using the United States Postal Service.

Before we begin, can you tell us what it is you do that everyday folks can’t do on their own at the post office window?
Our business serves clients with larger mailing projects. This includes businesses sending out mailers, organizations sending invitations or fundraising material, some simcha invitations, and the like. Not only do we have the knowledge of how to run such a project and the infrastructure to execute it, but since we have a permit for bulk mailing, we get lower rates and know how to qualify for certain discounts. Is all the work automated, or do you often deal with people inside the USPS? USPS mail sorting facility
Of course we deal with people. While we have upto-date software and equipment doing a lot of the heavy lifting, all mail still has to be physically dropped off at the post office. That’s always a great opportunity to interact with supervisors and other people involved. They often reach out if something is amiss, and periodically we have meetings and conferences where they discuss procedure changes, offer suggestions, and so on. In fact, I recall a meeting where one of the head honchos wanted to implement a new way of submitting our large envelopes, and we collectively spoke up and explained why it wouldn’t work with the system they use. He soon backed down. How are things different when you drop off a bundle of mail compared to when individuals do so?
Bulk mail entrance
Allow me to share a little background here. When you visit the local post office, you visit the regular retail window where they take your mail. But there is another entrance on the other side designated for the BMEU (Business Mail Entry Unit) or what’s known as bulk mail. In order to send bulk mail you must obtain a special permit and meet certain criteria. Bulk mail has different rates and requires us to take off some of the post office’s load by doing things like sorting mail in certain ways, ensuring address accuracy, and placing mail in specific trays or sacks. We can receive further discounts when we arrange it according to the mail carrier’s route, printing barcodes on the items or taking other steps. When you submit your presorted local mail, does it immediately get sent out for delivery, or does it still need to be processed?

The local post office is what’s called a DDU, a Destination Delivery Unit, and almost every zip code in America has one. All local mail goes out for delivery from there, but it must first be processed at a Sectional Center Facility (SCF). The Brooklyn region’s SCF is a massive facility at 1050 Forbell Street in Brooklyn, which takes up an entire block. This facility services all zip codes beginning with 103, 111, 112, 113, 114 and 116. I’ve been on tours there, and it’s mindblowing to watch their stories-high machines scan and process millions

Every letter we send is always first-class mail. Is that some marketing gimmick? Where is all the secondand third-class mail?
First-class mail is regular mail. Bulk mail senders like us often utilize what’s called standard mail for mass communications and promotional mailers, but those take longer to be delivered. Also of relevance is periodical mail, which is meant for magazines or other periodicals that are mass mailed but still somewhat time-sensitive. There are more categories and sub-categories, of course, but these are the ones most utilized in our world. Do you have any mail-related pet peeves?

You’ve been instrumental in raising awareness that wedding invitations shouldn’t include the return addresses of both mechutanim. Can you give us a little background on this?
I was afraid you’d ask this question. We can do a whole interview on it, but I’ll give you the basics. A few years ago, I received a call after dropping off a large bundle of wedding invitations. It was someone from the BMEU telling me to come pick up the entire shipment because the envelopes had two return addresses, which is not allowed. I told him that it’s been done this way for years and nobody has ever heard of this rule — but he told me that it’s in the DMM. Originally, I told people that only those using bulk mail need to worry about it because our shipments are tracked, but individual senders shouldn’t concern themselves with it. A while later, however, I started hearing that they were turning away invitation senders at the retail window. The employees insisted that it’s against the USPS code, and it soon became clear that their colleague, a rule-following zealot, felt the need to spread the word about this obscure rule, l’zikui harabbim. At that point, I began advising people that it’s best to avoid this problem and just not have two return addresses on there.

Unfortunately, yes. Here is the exact wording: “Mail with the name of more than one post office in the delivery address or return address is not acceptable for mailing.” Now, you’ll notice that it mentions more than one post office — which, if

Do I ever! We often see in shul or in the papers an invitation with a message to the effect of, “Due to postal delays, some invitations didn’t arrive.” Let me ask you a question: Did your electric bill ever fail to arrive? The post office delivers a few hundred million pieces of mail every day; do you think they mess up wedding invitations? Nearly every time something like this happens, the reason for the mishaps are a combination of not having your addresses right, young children helping out with packing the envelopes and messing up, a neighbor getting it and throwing it away, and things like that. It’s rarely the post office’s fault.

we want to be lomdish, may offer an exclusion if both addresses are in the same zip code. The reason appears to be that the post office will not know where to send such an envelope if it needs to be returned. Everyone knows of the Cherem d’Rabbeinu Gershom that bans opening someone else’s letters. Is it also a crime?
Letters waiting to be sorted
Yes, but only if it is done with intent, and it’s doubtful that such a case would ever be prosecuted outside of some larger fraud scheme. Remember, the USPS is a federal entity. That makes any mail-related crime a federal crime and a much bigger headache than it would otherwise be. Like other federal agencies, they have their own police force and investigations unit. Many criminals have received far stricter sentences because they employed postal services in some way, thereby engaging in “mail fraud.” I should also note that way back when the U.S. Postal Service was founded in the late 1700s, it was the primary vehicle for sending money, and stealing mail was punishable by death! Thankfully, that rule was eventually revised. How about reusing a stamp that wasn’t postmarked?
Unfortunately, that’s not allowed. I don’t know how anyone can prove it, but those are the rules. Let’s talk about good things. Are there any services people should know about?
Postal employees sorting mail by hand in 1951
I’ll share a couple. The USPS has a free service called Informed Delivery, where they send you scanned images of the letters you are due to receive. It’s a great way to keep track of mail that’s on its way. Another is an option called Mail Intercept Service, where you can fill out a form, pay a few dollars, and have them stop a mailed letter that’s already been sent out. It’s not guaranteed, though, that they’ll be able to stop it in time. True story: A yeshivah once called me in a panic, saying that they had sent a letter to a family saying that their son wasn’t allowed back in yeshivah, and now they thought the better of it and wanted to stop the letter from reaching its destination. With the inordinate number of rules and regulations postage involves, I’m starting to better understand why the phrase going postal is used to describe someone who goes completely off the rails.

I can definitely see that… With my position in this industry, people have begun turning to me as some sort of authority on mail-related questions. I like to joke that I now run a gemach, as well as a business. But in all seriousness, the postal system serves a tremendous purpose and is unparalleled around the world. Yes, it is a large bureaucracy, but this is a small price to pay for what we receive.

During my recent shopping trip to a big-box store, the effects of the pandemic on the world of retail were evident. Over in the cleaning supplies aisle, a solitary spray bottle from an off-brand company stood at attention, waiting for someone to take it home. Noticeable gaps in the self-care section also hinted to the winds of change — and to the winds of want.
With Earth’s every nook and cranny affected by COVID-19, the supply chain has become rather shaky. Thanks to widespread factory closures, limited hours of production, and decreased manpower due to vaccination and safety regulations, the shipping industry has undergone massive changes since the time the no-longer-novel coronavirus reared its ugly head. The ships we’ve so long relied on to carry a huge percentage of the world’s goods have been setting sail in reduced numbers due to the above factors, as well as an abundance of port closures. Additionally, due to the high demand for masks, gloves and other medical gear, the amount of ships exporting from China have been greater than those exporting from America, causing a disruption in the steady flow of ships between the two countries. All of this has had a trickle-down effect on us all. Due to these changes that have taken place, the prices for booking a container aboard a ship have 114

skyrocketed, leading directly to an increase in costs for both business owners and consumers. While an average container booking used to run in the $4,000 to $5,000 range, the current cost is between $20,000 to $22,000! To compound matters, even business owners who can afford the exorbitant shipping fees have to contend with heavy traffic at the American ports that can leave a container ship languishing in the bay for weeks or even months, unable to unload their cargo. While seasonal items generally need three months to be shipped from one end of the world to another, this long wait slows the process down even further. It’s no secret that more than a few stores were noticeably empty before Pesach last year, as many business owners (and shoppers!) sat on shpilkes, waiting for their orders to finally arrive… With the great blue sea witnessing between 80% to 90% of international goods transport, almost everything we have in our home is sourced from abroad and finds its way to us via ship. It is only now, when the world has felt the pinch of slowed shipping, that this oft-unthought-of industry is becoming appreciated by the average consumer. Let’s learn more about it.

CONTAINER SHIPS Before the advent of container ships, individual boxes of goods were tediously packed into seafaring vessels. Groups of workers spent inordinate amounts of time loading packages and playing Tetris with them, trying to fit as many as possible into the allocated space. All that changed in 1951, with the building of the first ships that were dedicated solely to carrying container-packed cargo. These ships are made to accommodate steel containers that are measured in 20-foot increments or, as the shipping industry calls it, twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). Standard-sized containers come in either 20- or 40-foot lengths, are eight feet wide, and over eight feet tall. The containers are stored inside the belly (or hull) of the ship, which features a huge warehouse divided by vertical guide rails that help hold the multiple layers of containers in place. These warehouses can be more than six stories high! Containers are lowered into place via crane and then secured to prevent them from shifting. Once the hull is full, containers are also stacked on top of the ship. Based upon the order in which they need to be unloaded, the containers are placed in the ship in a carefully calculated order, as determined by a cargo planner. Easy access is key to successful time and energy management. Smaller container ships only carry about 1,000 TEU, but larger ships can carry upward of 18,000 TEU!

OPERATING A CONTAINER SHIP Despite the size of these large vessels, container ships are usually manned by a small crew of around ten people, give or take a few. It’s mostly machinery that keeps the ship moving. But human effort is certainly needed, as well.
The ship is navigated in the wheelhouse.
Over at the WHEELHOUSE , the captain navigates the ship though the sea — and sometimes, through pirate-infested waters. That’s right — modern-day pirates roam the ocean, looking for ships to commandeer and crews to take captive. It’s a danger that keeps shipmen on their toes, and one for which they must be ever-aware and fully prepared. Extremely powerful ENGINES move the ship forward. These engines are incredibly complex and can be as large as a house! The ENGINE CONTROL ROOM, too, is large, featuring complicated machinery that ensures smooth operation. There is also a control room for monitoring and managing containers that need to be kept at specific temperatures.
A multi-story container ship engine
Life at sea can be boring and lonely for the crew on a container ship. With little to no contact with anyone other than the handful of workers they see on a daily basis, spending several months at sea can be a task that only an extreme introvert might relish. To combat boredom, ships usually have a gym and a library, as well as dining areas where the crew is (hopefully) treated to creative and tasty meals by the ship’s cook. Other than that, there’s usually not much else to do for the several months at a time that crew members typically spend at sea.

Meet the HMM Algeciras. Longer than the Empire State Building is tall, the Algeciras is the first of twelve ultra-large container vessels being made by the Hyundai Merchant Marine company. She set sail for the first time in April 2020. With her unparalleled capacity to carry 23,964 shipping containers, she’s certainly the Big Bertha of maritime trade. For the time being, anyway. Is there any limit to how big container ships can get? Yes. And no. While careful engineering can create floatable ships as large as one can imagine, they have to be able to enter ports. And port size is currently limited. Until that changes, ships aren’t likely to get much bigger.

OTHER TYPES OF CARGO VESSELS Different products require different forms of packing and shipping. Over the years, various ship designs have been made to best accommodate the natures of the products being shipped. Here’s a peek at two other types of cargo ships.
Bulk Vessels Items such as grain, sand and coal are best shipped in bulk vessels that are outfitted with cargo holds so the loose goods can be loaded directly inside. After each shipment, the holds are given a thorough cleaning before the next item can be loaded.
Tanker Vessels Much like bulk carriers, tanker vessels have their product pumped directly into their holds. Liquids such as molasses, oil, juice, gas or chemicals are transported in these types of ships. To prevent listing, the liquids are separated into multiple tanks, which help the ship maintain its balance.
A special thanks to Mr. Gottesman from A&C Import & Export Services for updated information on the changes in the shipping industry.

After spending a half-hour at Toys 4 U selecting that perfect little Playmobil set-in-a-case he’d earned, my son eagerly ripped the packaging open and puckered his mouth as he concentrated on putting the pieces together. But, “Can it be?” he wondered. “There’s a piece missing!” Now, if anything can shatter the innocence of a child, it’s this: a perfectly closed package he’d worked up points for that has a gaping hole. A Playmobil scene that is just incomplete. We looked under the box and under the couch and all around. Surely it was somewhere! But it seemed that the piece had never been packaged. Protective mother that I am, I wasn’t going to take this sitting down. I looked up the number of Playmobil, ready to make my case! I called the company. Within minutes I was connected to a representative, who didn’t even wait to hear my passionate “my son is dejected” speech. He went right down to business, asking me which piece was missing. “Provide your address, and we’ll mail it to you,” he said. “It’ll arrive within five to ten business days.” And just like that, peace was restored. A week and a half later, the micro-mini plastic leaf arrived, well packaged in a small envelope. The postage cost Playmobil almost $5. (The complete set had cost only $10.99.) Were the rest of the pieces still intact? I didn’t even want to know. I handed the envelope to my tickled-pink son, and Playmobil gained a lot of respect in our eyes. Often, it’s that simple. Customer service is a huge aspect of business. Brands know that they need to keep customers happy to keep customers at all. Sometimes, all you have to do is ask.
Such was the case with Avrohom. This is his story:
M
y son grew very attached to a stuffed cat that was in his crib from when he was a newborn. He had no blanket or pacifier that other kids soothe themselves with; this was his only security object. Over the years it got all chewed up, to the point where it was literally a choking hazard. I had bought it at Carter’s, but when I reached out, they informed me that they weren’t selling it anymore. Next I reached out to their corporate office, but no one was willing to help me. I finally found a cat like it on eBay, but the seller wanted over $50 for it. He had a clear shot of the label, though, so I was able to see the name of the company that had manufactured it for Carter’s. I sent them this email with a picture of the cat attached: Hi, In 2016, I bought a Carter’s stuffed kitten manufactured by your company. This is my son’s security toy, and he can’t be without it. I wasn’t able to find it at Carter’s anymore, but I desperately need a new one as my son chewed his all up and at this point it’s a choking hazard. Any chance you still have those and I can buy one or two of them? Pretty please? Avrohom
It took but a few days to receive a response from the company. Apologies for the delay while we searched for this item, but we were able to locate it! Can you send us your shipping info so we can get this out to you?
A few days later, I got a box in the mail with three of these cats — which are no longer available for sale — free of charge. I sent the company an email to thank them, and they responded: Knowing we made a difference and helped you out is why we do what we do!
I told my son that we took his stuffed animal to the doctor to get it fixed, and now it looks like new. (And we have enough back-ups to repeat this until he outgrows it.) This was from a company that doesn’t even sell retail, as far as I know; they are just the manufacturers of branded items for other companies and had nothing to gain from being so kind! Rochel also shares a customer service success story.
W
hen the handlebar of my Bugaboo Donkey snapped in half, it was right after the warranty had expired. I was going to purchase a new handlebar, but the handlebar covers had been upgraded from foam to faux leather, and if I was having leather on the handlebar, I wanted to have the same upgraded look on the seat bars as well. However, the leather bar covers were only available in a set of three (two seat covers and one handlebar cover), and I wanted to avoid paying for a second handlebar cover; after all, I’d be receiving one along with my handlebar replacement. I decided to reach out to Bugaboo to see if they would sell the two seat bar covers to me separately. To Whom It May Concern, I’m a huge fan of your company and the proud owner of two of your products. I have enjoyed the Bugaboo Donkey for several years and then purchased a Bugaboo Fox. I recommend your products to all of my friends and family. They’re sturdy, easy to wheel and comfortable for children lucky enough to sit in them. The handlebar of my Donkey (which is no longer under the warranty) recently snapped in half, and since I will be replacing the handlebar, which now comes with your beautiful faux leather covers, I was hoping Bugaboo will make an exception for me and sell the two seat bar covers separately, so I can save by not buying the complete set of three. I look forward to enjoying your products for many more years! Rochel
How surprised I was to receive a response not too much thereafter. Dear Rochel, An order has been placed for the replacement Bugaboo Donkey top handle bar with faux leather as an exception. We will not be requesting that you return your defective part. Please dispose of your defective parts in an environmentally safe manner. Kind regards, Michael
Just like that, I got a new handlebar, without even having asked for it! 134

hen I was 17 years old, my parents and my uncle the Chazon Ish worked very hard to find a shidduch for me. Yet, shidduch after shidduch did not come to be... Now, consider this. When the search for my zivug began, my future wife Batsheva was not yet bas mitzvah! Collection joys aren’t limited to your elementary-school kid. Take stamp collecting, for one; it’s no child’s play! In fact, some adults are ready to pay millions to get their hands on precious postage pieces... For Posterity Hey, stamp collectors! Did you know there’s a term especially for you?
PHILATELIST noun A specialist in philately; one who collects or studies stamps Back in 1864, French stamp collector George Herpin coined the word philately, which means the collection or study of stamps. Philately is the combination of the Greek root phil (which means “loving”) and ateleia (which means “that which is tax exempt”). Stamp-lovers were thrilled to receive mail without having to pay the tax, which had already been paid with the postage.
It all began when Sir Rowland Hill, a teacher in England, detected problems with the existing mail system. Until then, postal charges were paid by the recipient. When recipients declined to accept their letters, these went unpaid — and were returned to their sender in a second trip. Additionally, the postage fees were determined by distance traveled. Hill pointed out that more work went into sorting and handling the mail than the difference in travel time. The solution? Hill introduced the penny postage system. Now postage would be prepaid by the sender, and a fixed rate was applied for mail delivered anywhere within Great Britain. Hill actually suggested two methods. His prepaid envelopes never took off because of their misunderstood design, but the adhesive stamps were an absolute success.
Stamps were first printed on sheets of paper, and users needed to use a knife or scissors to split them apart. Between 1848 and 1854, a machine was invented to create perforations — the tiny holes that enable easy separation.
The Collection Craze Designed for practicality, destined as an activity Stamp collecting as a hobby is nearly as old as stamps themselves! People were captivated by the sticky little squares and began collecting them. An 1841 ad in The Times of London is among the first historical traces of the popular trend. Passionate collectors catalogued their stamp collections and publicized the long lists, and soon public interest was aroused. In 1866, one British stamp list included 2,400 varieties, including postal stationery and envelopes. By the late 1900s, modern stamp listings comprised some 200,000 stamps alone — without envelopes! Soon stamp albums were designed to store the collections, with a space assigned for each collectible stamp. Country names and dates were printed on the pages near the empty spaces so the collectors knew which stamps they were missing. Today, worldwide stamp albums for comprehensive collections have 30+ serial volumes. Most collectors opt for specialized collections focusing on specific fields of interest and use less-inclusive albums.

Join the Club! With stamp collecting in vogue, stamp magazines were published. Some, such as the American Philatelist (first published in 1887), The Stamp Lover and the London Philatelist (of 1908) are still around today. Some stamp aficionados joined to form collectors societies. Until today, you can find stamp collector clubs in most international cities.
The United States launched postage stamps in 1847, with 5-cent Benjamin Franklin stamps and 10-cent George Washington stamps.
Famous Collections Philippe la Renotiere von Ferrari, an Austrian-Italian nobleman living in Paris, grew his collection over the course of 40 years. Even though he willed it to the Berlin Museum, when he died in 1917, his collection was seized by the French government and sold for $2 million. King George V of England was a serious philatelist. His collection, rich in British and colonial stamps, has been passed down to the monarchs of England to this day.
Stamped Most Valuable • A one-cent British Guiana Magenta of 1856 was auctioned for $280,000 in 1970. The same issue was acquired for $9.48 million at an auction in 2014 by shoe designer and philatelist Stuart Weitzman. • The world’s most valuable stamps are those issued between 1840 and 1875. • The American Stamp Dealers Association, or ASDA, appraises stamps according to their current market value.
The finest collection in public hands originally belonged to Thomas K. Tapling. Today it is displayed in the British Museum. Perhaps the most famous public collection of U.S. stamps is located in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.
$9.48 million: Highest price paid for a single stamp
Home of the first stamp: Great Britain May 1, 1840: The first stamp is sold. It had an image of Queen Victoria on it.
Cashing in on their mistakes… Some of the most valuable pieces are misprints. Errors are typically caught quickly, and imperfect stamps are then removed from circulation, making them even rarer. The 1918 24-cent Inverted Jenny U.S. stamp was printed with an upside-down airplane by mistake. There are some 100 Inverted Jennys in circulation today, worth about $1.35 million each. Ninety-five years later, in 2014, the U.S. Postal Service commemorated the error with a run of purposely inverted planes. As a tease, they also issued some with upright airplanes — and those sell for about $50,000 each.
