United Refuah is a non profit healthsharing organization. It is not insurance and doesn't offer insurance. See Sharing Guidelines for full details.
SO DOES IT PAY?
In short, the biggest perks of a healthshare are that you can choose any doctor or hospital, and that it costs almost half the price of other healthcare options (you can save up to 20k annually!) The downsides are that may need to lay out the money at your doctor visits (you’ll be reimbursed very quickly), and may have to upload medical bills on the United Refuah platform. Our goal is to start a conversation and help you learn more about healthshares and whether they can work for you.

(Re: Help in Your Home, Issue 119) With five-month-old twin boys and four aides covering 24/7 shifts, I enjoyed reading about others’ experiences with help in the house — though personally, I can almost write a book (okay, perhaps a manual) or put up a comedy from our experiences with them. I want to reiterate that one of the most important points to mention is kashrus. Besides installing cameras and making my guidelines clear to the hired help, we also typed up and hung a visible note in the room detailing the important rules of the kitchen. I’d be glad to share my list. I can be contacted through The Boro Park View. May we enjoy the help, and of course, our precious kinderlach! Mom of Twins
NEVER CAREFUL ENOUGH
(Re: Rectifying the Wrong, Issue 119) This true story was heartbreaking, and at the same time, it was uplifting to read about the manner the family rav advised them to rectify it. This reminded me of a similar incident that happened to a childless Holocaust survivor I used to visit. She was convalescing at a nursing home, where I would visit her. One day, she informed me that her home attendant gave her pizza for lunch. Her aide confirmed that she did indeed purchase it at the nonkosher pizzeria around the corner. I notified this woman’s nieces about this incident, and I want to make all of your readers aware that one can never be careful enough. May we hear only good besuros. A Reader

haunting me until today. I try to do teshuvah and beg Hashem to cleanse me. I once heard Rabbi Chaim Feivel Schneebalg, shlit”a, speaking about the importance of being very careful with kashrus. He explained that the food we ingest actually becomes a part of us. This is especially relevant for babies and children who are growing. keep regenerating! While we’re on this topic, I want to make the public aware of another very important point: the danger, both b’ruchnius and b’gashmius, of leaving children in the care of a cleaning lady, babysitter or other non-Jewish help. There are too many untold stories of pain, anguish and guilt that cannot be reversed. Our children are too precious to be left alone! Let us do our hishtadlus to prevent future damage, and let’s not

(Re: All You Have To Do Is Ask, Issue 118) Thank you so much for your sample customer service letter and for motivating me to write one. Doing so saved me $100! After I reached out to CrockPot with a complaint, they responded that while normally they “do not replace products outside of warranty,” as a valued customer, they will make “a one-time exception and process a replacement at no cost!” It was as simple as that. (Re: Lost in the Mail, Issue 118) Thank you for your informative article about the post office. However, in response to the statement that “it’s rarely the post office’s fault” when mail doesn’t arrive, I must disagree. I’ve had a few experiences over the last few months where properly addressed envelopes never arrived to me and were returned to the sender. Similarly, I very often get mail with random different addresses delivered to my home. The postal system is definitely not performing properly since COVID-19. So yes, they do make mistakes. PARSHAS TERUMAH An Ounce of Foresight
The parsha begins with a call to Klal Yisroel to contribute precious materials — gold, silver, copper, wool, gems and more. The pasuk says, “V’yikchu li terumah me’eis kol ish asher yidvenu libo — They should take for Me a contribution, from every person whose heart inspires him to generosity” (Shemos 25:2). At the beginning of Parshas Vayikra, Klal Yisroel is once again asked to donate, this time for the korbanos. There the pasuk says, “Adam ki yakriv mikem korban l’Hashem — When a man from among you brings a korban to Hashem” (Vaykira 1:2). It’s interesting to note that by the donations for the Mishkan, the Torah uses the word “ish,” and for the korbanos, the word “adam.” What is the reason for these two different titles? WHEN REB YITZCHOK ELCHANAN Spektor, zt”l, of Kovno was a young adult, he lived in abject poverty. He hardly had enough money to cover his basic necessities, and when his shoes tore beyond repair, he was left with a problem. He had no way to purchase a new pair, and this forced him to remain at home. Young Yitzchok Elchanan wasn’t all that disturbed by his lack of provisions, but not to be able to go to the beis medrash to learn? That was already too much. It pained him deeply. One day, he came up with an idea. The son of a local wealthy businessman was getting married, and Yitzchok Elchanan approached him with an entreaty: “In another few days, you’ll be standing under the chuppah. Surely you will be wearing a new pair of shoes, and you probably won’t have a need for your old ones anymore. Perhaps you can give me your old shoes after your chasunah?” It was a reasonable request, or so Yitzchok Elchanan thought. To his dismay, the wealthy boy looked at him and replied coldly, “If you go out to work, you’ll earn some money, and you

won’t need to go around begging for donations. You’ll be able to go to the store and buy yourself a pair of shoes on your own!” Then he walked off, leaving a humbled Yitzchok Elchanan standing rooted to his spot. In time, with siyata d’Shmaya, he managed to acquire another pair of shoes for himself. The encounter with the wealthy chasan was all but forgotten. Years passed, and Reb Yitzchok Elchanan was soon renowned as a posek and gadol hador. At one point, Reb Yitzchok Elchanan traveled to Vilna along with a manuscript of one of his seforim. In the big city, he planned to have his new sefer prepared for print. The entire town was swept up in festivity. They welcomed Reb Yitzchok Elchanan like royalty. His reception was so grand that the local leader forbade him from returning to the city. Seeing the extraordinary honor bestowed upon the gadol hador, the ruler worried that it would be considered an insult to the Czar’s honor. One of the people to grace the reception was that same

wealthy chasan who had, in the interim, become a rich businessman in his own right. He approached the gadol and said, “Rebbi, I’m ready to sponsor the entire cost of publishing and distributing the new sefer. I want to have a part in your learning.” Reb Yitzchok Elchanan took a long look at this generous benefactor. “I’m sorry,” he said at last, “but it’s too late. The expenses of the sefer are already paid up. Had you shared your old shoes with me years ago, however, you would have enabled me to learn, and then you would truly have had a part in my Torah. But you missed that opportunity. We can’t turn back the clock…” Indeed, the trick is knowing how to recognize an opportunity and invest in it before it goes public as a great deal. Once the true value of a deal is already proven, it is no big deal to jump on the bandwagon.

Before the Mishkan was built, it was hard to imagine and envision the kedusha that would rest in Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s home. Those who recognized the value at that point could be considered “ish,” a title that denotes greatness. They appreciated the opportunity and rushed to invest their own resources even before the beauty shone. Indeed, they later relished the results of their foresight. By the time the Mishkan was standing erect, and Hashem’s glory and honor were easy to detect, it didn’t require the same level of greatness to be inspired to contribute. The Yidden wanted to have a part in the splendor without thinking twice. Thus, those who contributed at this stage were called “adam,” indicating that they were regular people who were understandably motivated to take part in the glory that their eyes beheld.
Did You Know? The Mizbei’ach was fashioned out of wood and overlaid with copper, and it was filled with earth that was untouched by a sword. Despite the constant fire burning on the Mizbei’ach, the copper never melted and the wood never burned. The Mizbei’ach was located outside in the courtyard, yet the rain never extinguished its fire, and the wind never dispersed the straight pillar of smoke that rose perpetually upward. The Kli Yakar comments that much like the Mizbei’ach resisted all four elements — fire, water, wind and earth — it protected Klal Yisroel from being harmed by these four elements.

Shabbos Nor’easter Slams Boro Park With Nearly a Foot of Snow High winds and significant snowfalls coated Boro Park in a blanket of snow last Shabbos, with gusts blowing accumulations in just about every direction. Snow totals ranged from nine to nearly twelve inches across Brooklyn, with nearly 7,000 flights canceled over the weekend because of the storm. Despite the large piles of snow that were seemingly everywhere in Boro Park, they paled by comparison next to areas to the south and east, with sixteen inches reported in Toms River, twenty-two on eastern Long Island and Boston topping out at nearly two feet of snow, tying a one-day snowfall record set in 2003, according to 7News Boston. Motzei Shabbos turned bloody in Flatbush with one man stabbed in the finger while shoveling snow on East 17th Street between Avenue R and Quentin Road in Flatbush. Hamodia reported that the victim’s father ran outside after hearing him scream, and the two managed to subdue the intoxicated assailant. Both police and Hatzalah responded to the scene, where it was discovered that the father had been stabbed in the back. The snow may have also played a role in a disturbing incident that took place on Sunday morning on 50th Street between 9th and 10th avenues. A tow truck driver who blocked the street for half an hour after he was unable to maneuver his vehicle into a driveway screamed out a flurry of anti-Semitic obscenities at the gathering crowd, reported Hamodia. According to eyewitness reports, the Jets Towing driver grew angry that the long line of cars behind him refused to back up in order to give him space to back into the driveway, ignoring requests that he circle the block in order to alleviate the traffic jam he was creating. The driver was ultimately fired after videos surfaced of him screaming at area residents, telling them to “go back to

their country” and “let them be killed by Hitler.” Ralph McCluggage, a dispatcher for Jets Towing, said that the driver had been with the company for about a year. “We do not condone any type of anti-Semitism or racism at our company,” said McCluggage.
New State Guidelines Highlight Importance of Video Devices for Hospital Patients A nonprofit launched at the height of COVID-19 to use specially designed tablets to keep patients connected to their families is applauding Governor Kathy Hochul and New York State Department of Health officials for recognizing the benefits of virtual visitation. Hamodia reported that new guidelines released by the DOH addressed hospital visitation restrictions enacted in light of omicron and directed hospitals and health care facilities to promote the use of video devices to facilitate communication between patients and their loved ones. WellTab, which offers free loaner tablets to patients and their families, proved to be a lifeline in the early days of COVID-19, when all visitation was suspended and staffing shortages left patients completely isolated as their family members hovered by the phone for sporadic medical updates. But some hospitals have been less than receptive to WellTab even as the pandemic has continued, concerned that the tablets could be used to monitor their work or might potentially infringe on the privacy of other patients. The DOH directive acknowledged that while hospital policies may preclude the use of video cameras, patients have the right to use personal devices for virtual visitation. “Hospital staff might sometimes misinterpret the purpose of the WellTab,” a company spokesperson told The Boro Park View. “We are extremely hopeful that the letter of guidance from the New York State Department of Health directly addressed to the chief executive officers of New York State hospitals will reinforce basic patients’ rights to communication of their choice and encourage the use of WellTab so patients may conveniently and without fear stay connected with their family members and never be alone, which will have a direct effect on their recovery.” The new guidelines were released in early December 2021, but WellTab acknowledged that some hospitals may not be aware of their implementation or their full implications.

est Board review the potential appointment, but only asked the board to approve the hire of his brother at the symbolic $1 salary. The board granted a waiver that would allow Bernard Adams to take the security job, noting that no conflict of interest existed under the circumstances. Both Michael Bloomberg and Bill de Blasio hired family members to work for their administrations, all of whom took no salary for their efforts.
Pittsburgh Eruv Unharmed by Bridge Collapse
The program’s tablets are being used successfully in prestigious hospitals including Cleveland Clinic, Johns Hopkins and Yale New Haven Hospital, among others, and WellTab was recently approved for neonatal intensive care use to give parents of medically fragile newborns the ability to stay in touch with their families. Following Backlash, Mayor’s Brother To Take Salary of $1 Per Year With cries of nepotism making the rounds after Eric Adams tried to hire his brother in a position paying a salary topping $200,000 per year on two separate occasions, the mayor has reversed his position and will have Bernard Adams signing on as a volunteer with an annual salary of just $1. The New York Post reported that Adams had announced his plans in early January to hire his younger brother as the NYPD’s deputy commissioner, a job that paid $242,000 a year. When that appointment came under scrutiny, Adams shifted gears, moving his brother to a $210,000 a year position heading his personal security team, sparking further criticism. Under city law, public servants are not allowed to use their positions to benefit themselves, associates or family members. Adams had said that he would have the city’s Conflict of Inter62

Last Friday morning’s bridge collapse in Pittsburgh’s Frick Park miraculously caused no fatalities or critical injuries, but the disaster also included a nonhuman survivor — the local community’s eruv. The 50-year-old Fern Hollow Bridge, located near Squirrel Hill, came down just after 6:30 a.m., reported Hamodia. A city bus and five vehicles were on the bridge when the collapse occurred, and rescuers rappelled down almost 150 feet, forming a human chain to evacuate victims from a park ravine. Ten people were injured in the collapse, with three taken to area hospitals. The Fern Hollow Bridge is part of the Pittsburgh eruv, and its collapse some ten hours before Shabbos had warnings going out to the local community, advising them that the eruv’s kashrus was in doubt until further notice. After arriving on scene and working with first responders, police chaplain Rabbi Elisar Admon reached out to the Young Israel of Pittsburgh’s Rabbi Shimon Silver and invited him to conduct an emergency survey of the eruv. The two were pleased to note that poles on either side of the bridge, which are essential components of the eruv, were intact. Descending into the ravine to survey the damage to the bridge, Rabbi Silver was shocked to see that the bridge had collapsed in a way that made what was left of the structure into a new wall, keeping the eruv intact for Shabbos. “When I saw that there was nothing that we needed to do, that Hashem had taken care of it, I got choked up,” said Rabbi Silver. “The frum Yidden will use the eruv if it’s kosher, and if it’s not kosher, they won’t carry. But there are a bunch of Yidden out there who don’t realize that they are being saved from chillul Shabbos by an eruv. I’m still choked up now, thinking about how much Hashem wants us to be shomer Shabbos.” The fact that the eruv remained kosher was just one of the nissim inherent in the collapse of the bridge, which is heavily used by members of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community, noted Rabbi Silver. “Because of the snowstorm, the schools were delayed, so no school buses were on the bridge,” said Rabbi Silver. “No one was walking on the hiking trail under the bridge, and there were no homeless people there either. As soon as I arrived, I saw the Yad Hashem. Nobody died from falling off the bridge in their vehicles. The bridge carried a gas line and there was a strong smell of gas, but there was no gas explosion. And when we realized that the fallen bridge made its own eruv, I felt it was mamash chasdei Hashem.”

CHAPTER FORTY-THREE RECAP: Shlomo
agrees with Osher that Reb Elazar is afraid of something. All signs seem to indicate that the “something” is bound to happen soon. Reb Elazar sees lots of similarities between his nephew Gadi and Osher.
I
t was four in the morning by the time Ariella began to prepare the cot that stood in the middle of the Bergs’ storage room. A grand mess surrounded her on all sides, but Ariella knew that if she wouldn’t be able to fall asleep, it wouldn’t be because of that. She had been raised in a very orderly environment, yet she’d never been able to conform to all the rules of that orderliness. She struggled to put the large quilt into the quilt cover, and when she was done, she sat down on the bed and looked around. The owner of this storage room seemed to be accustomed to an American basement. Your standard Israeli family did not usually set aside a whole room — and a large one at that — just to store toys, blankets, kitchen utensils, some dismantled pieces of furniture, and three huge baskets filled with clothes. There was also a washing machine, but where was the dryer? It was strange that there wasn’t one. It wasn’t that she’d glanced into the closets to see what was inside; rather, most of them were open, and many of the objects inside were either scattered on the wire shelves or had tumbled to the floor. It was possible, of course, that this room only looked like this today, when the mother of the home had been away and her children had done as they pleased in it. But something in the friendly mess looked pretty permanent, though Ariella could not put her finger on what it was. Maybe it was the open ironing board piled with countless white shirts, or the mounds of clean laundry in the baskets. Perhaps it was the doz-

ens of writing supplies that were haphazardly stacked on the shelves near her bed. It was a bit too much to have happened all in one day. And besides, there was something organized about the whole disorder. Ariella had a feeling that she would like the mother of this house. It would have been nice to have grown up in a room like this. The perfect room from her childhood, with its gorgeous desk and elegant bed custom-ordered from a carpenter, were not to her taste. Her parents had consulted with her, of course, and they’d let her choose the furniture’s design from a whole catalog that the carpenter had sent. But she found all the designs in the catalog to be very uninspiring and boring. As a girl, Ariella had dreamed of enhancing her bedroom furniture with stickers, something that would give some life to the room. But the Formica was too nice, too shiny, and she never would have voiced such a suggestion.
Elazar was silent for a long moment. “Among all the diagnoses she told you about, did anyone mention anything about a communication problem?”

Just glancing around the room now, Ariella counted more than twenty childish stickers that had been pasted onto different surfaces, including the legs of the ironing board. If she wouldn’t fall asleep easily, then maybe she’d get up and do some ironing for this family. * * * * *

He has a communication problem. Reb Elazar Reiness did not know where those words popped into his mind from, but he woke up with them in the morning. It was no wonder that he was thinking about Osher when he arose, though. Because when you talk about a person for nearly an hour, and then fall asleep for two and a half hours, it’s likely that that person will dominate your thoughts. “Are you leaving now?” he heard Sarah’s sleepy voice ask. “Yes, b’ezras Hashem. What did Bassi and Aryeh make up with you? They probably want you to be here all day, no?” “Yes. I canceled today’s appointments at the Bnei Brak clinic. I’ll stick them in next week somehow.” “And tonight?” “We’ll talk. I’m thinking about leaving Ella — uh, I mean Ariella — here. But I need to speak to Bassi about it.” He was silent for a long moment. “Among all the diagnoses she told you about, did anyone mention anything about a communication problem?”

“She didn’t say anything like that to me.” “Not Asperger’s, or something mildly on the autism spectrum…?” Sarah’s voice was much more alert now. “No. At least, not that she told me about. Maybe he does have such a diagnosis, but they’re keeping it a secret.” “Hmmm. So maybe I’ll go to Bnei Brak today, instead of you.” “Bnei Brak? Why?” “To meet with Osher’s father. This child is falling between the cracks, and it’s a shame.” Sarah was quiet. She didn’t ask if this was the first time he had encountered, as a mechanech, a child falling between the cracks, or whether he would jump into the car and travel all the way to Bnei Brak for any of his other students. She said nothing, because she knew that Elazar was very devoted to each one of his students. She also knew how much frustration Osher managed to elicit from him, and how bothered he was by that, especially because there seemed to have been some issue with the chemistry between them from the first moment they’d met. “Have a good morning and a nice day,” he added before leaving the room. “From what I’m hearing, your sister’s crew is already up and about. Good luck!” “Amen,” she said, and hastily got up. But as she soon discovered, she really didn’t have to hurry. When she emerged into the little hallway, she discovered five of Bassi’s children dressed and sitting obediently at the kitchen table, and Ariella walking out of the kitchen with hot drinks on a tray. “I haven’t yet taken care of the babies,” Ariella said apologetically when she noticed Sarah. “I think the older one is up, but she’s calm now. And there’s also one boy who hasn’t got up yet. So, who wants tea?” “Her name is Malka,” said Bracha. “And she’ll probably want her cereal soon.” “Who?” Ariella asked. “The one you said got up,” Shulamis — Bracha’s twin — explained. “So we’ll prepare it for her in a few minutes,” Ariella said. “And what’s the name of the tiny baby in the cradle?” “Kreindy,” Baruch replied. “And she’s not so tiny. She’s nearly four months old. When she turned three months old a few weeks ago on Shabbos, we made her a birthday party.” “What kind of magic wand did you wave here?” Sarah asked, smiling broadly at the energetic children who stood up to take a cup of tea, and then obediently returned to their chairs. “Oy, don’t use that word,” Ariella said. “I’ve had enough magic for the rest of my life.” “Oh, come on, she didn’t really use magic.” Sarah went into the kitchen to boil up the water for two-year-old Malka. “But you still haven’t told me your secret.” “My secret?” “Yes. How were you able to get all these children ready so beautifully?” “The older ones helped me. And besides,” Ariella followed Sarah into the kitchen, “I promised to tell them the
story of the black sheep prince.” “The black sheep?” Sarah echoed slowly. “Yup. I started after they said Modeh Ani, and I promised to continue the story for whoever hurries to get dressed, is quiet, and doesn’t make a mess in the house.” A trace of a smile crossed her face when she said those last few words. It didn’t look like anyone could make more of a mess than there already was. Aside from the small living room, which was relatively in shape, the house seemed like one big jumble of clothes, toys, shoes and kitchen paraphernalia. But the children seemed rather comfortable with the mess; Ariella suspected that they were quite used to it. Indeed, she had no idea if Nosson, alav hashalom, would have survived such a mess, but it was interesting that one could raise even… seven — or more? — children in such disarray. “So, what is the story about the black sheep prince?” Ariella smiled. “Let Rabbi Reiness ask Osher about that. Whenever we went to the grocery together, we’d make up stories. Osher liked the aisle with the colorful soaps and cleaning materials best, and that aisle was the perfect backdrop to our stories. Not that we bought any of the interestingcolored soaps — my mother uses very specific cleaning agents, because my sisters are sensitive to many different soaps and scents. But imagining something can’t cause an allergic reaction.” “And there’s also something to the claim that when you want something that is out of reach, it’s easy to dream all kinds of things about it,” Sarah suggested. “Think about what would have happened if you would have once bought the cleaning solution that you really were drawn to… I have no idea what kind of imaginary things you
made up, but imagine that from a prince dressed in beautiful clothes, he became a simple bottle that contained dishwashing soap or floor cleaner — nothing more.” “That’s true,” Ariella said. “Yes, kids, I’m coming! In any case,” she turned back to Sarah, “the bottles were not the princes. They were the guards in uniform, the waiters, or the flowers in the beautiful gardens. Osher was the prince, the black sheep prince.” “And you?” Sarah quickly rinsed out the baby bottle she found in the full sink. “Me? I didn’t have any specific role.
living room. “Ariella, kids,” she said, “it might be a good idea to take a break from the story now.” She walked over to the bookcase. “Let’s say two perakim of Tehillim together for Yisroel Meir. His operation is starting soon.”
Osher After davening, Reb Elazar gave his regular morning Mishnayos shiur. I was a bit tired from my night’s activities and the patrol of the yard with Shlomo, and as I sat in my corner of the room, I dozed off. Reb Elazar also looked pretty tired to me. Suddenly I woke up and saw two people looking at me. “Stop it!” I said, and stood up. Did they think it was nice for a person to wake up and discover eyes fixed on them? I think Reb Elazar tried to call my name, but I ignored it. I went outside through the carpentry shop, and when Yehuda Matari asked me to hold something for him for two minutes, I decided that I was too tired to even hear him. I walked out to the street. On the street, I sensed someone looking at me again. I was sure it was one of the boys, or even Reb Elazar, but it was that man who had once thought I wanted to steal his boat when I was really trying to save it. I didn’t say anything to him. Instead, I turned around to the gate and fixed my eyes on the sign telling everyone that there were cameras here — as if there was nothing more interesting in my life than this sign. “It’s funny,” the man said suddenly. “What’s funny?” I shot back. “This sign is funny,” he said. “Cameras? Why would anyone put cameras in such a yard? What are they guarding so closely? Diamonds? Or you, the students?” “Dunno,” I told him. “I don’t get involved in my rabbi’s decisions.”
“What kind of magic wand did you wave here?” Sarah asked, smiling broadly at the energetic children.

I was just Osher’s sister.” Ariella stood in her place for another moment. “In a certain sense, that’s what I still am, to this day,” she said, before disappearing off to the children. Sarah poured soy milk into the clean bottle and glanced at the empty kitchen doorway. She heard Ariella’s voice from the living room, rising and dropping dramatically. She thought she remembered her husband once mentioning “the black sheep prince.” She would ask him; it would be interesting to hear Osher’s story. Her phone suddenly rang; it was Bassi. Yisroel Meir was going to be taken in for a complicated operation in half an hour. Sarah wished her the best, and gave her heartfelt brachos. After she hung up, she hurried to give Malka the bottle and wake up Gadi. It was no wonder the boy was sleeping so deeply; he’d been up until who-knewwhen last night. When Gadi finally began to show signs of stirring, she went back to the

“Oh, Elazar is your rabbi? Nice. Send him regards from Yosef. I was friends with him when we were children. We learned together until fourth grade.” I looked at him. He didn’t look religious at all, and it was strange to think that Reb Elazar and this man had once learned together. There were definitely ba’alei teshuvah in the world, and on the other end, unfortunately, people who went off the derech. Still, it was strange to think that this short guy had once been a little boy sitting in class with a young Reb Elazar. The man chuckled. “Yes, yes, everyone changes, huh? Did you stay the same as you were at age ten?” “Could be,” I said, and turned back around. I had the feeling that lots of things had stayed the way they were when I was a little child, but I didn’t have to share such personal things with a stranger, even if he was my rabbi’s childhood friend.
“Tell him I said hello. Has he came back to Acco permanently?” “Not exactly.” “I’d wanted to come up a few times
“Nu, so go over and meet him,” I said, as I started to walk away. “Wait, is he here now? I’m kind of in a rush, but if you tell me he’s leaving very soon…” “I don’t think he’s leaving soon,” I said. I don’t know why, but my voice sounded more irritated than I had intended it to. Apparently, his questions were really annoying me. “So when will he be leaving?” “Whenever he finishes taking care of what he has to do in Acco.” I turned to cross the street, toward the beach. But the man followed me! “Hmmm, so he has things to take care of? And for that he dragged his wife and all of you all the way here?” I stopped answering him. Instead, I looked pointedly in the other direction and leaned on the gate, breathing in very deeply.
“Cameras? Why would anyone put cameras in such a yard? What are they guarding so closely? Diamonds? Or you, the students?” to welcome him to the area, but every time I came, he either wasn’t there or I was in a hurry. So you’re saying that he’s only here in Acco for a short time?” “I don’t know. But I don’t think it’s permanent.” “If so, I really need to make sure that I meet him. It will be so disappointing for me if, say, tomorrow he suddenly gets up and decides to move away again, without us ever having the chance to meet up after all these years.”

The chips melt into this cake, giving it delicious flavor as well as a candy-like burst of sweetness. I tried the recipe using light spelt flour and light olive oil with fabulous results. Caramel chips can be used instead of butterscotch chips.
INGREDIENTS 1 cup oil 1 cup brown sugar 1 cup sugar 1 T. vanilla sugar 4 eggs 3½ cups WonderMills flour 1 T. baking powder 1 cup orange juice ¾ cup butterscotch chips, divided
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. In a bowl, mix the oil with the sugars until they’re combined. 3. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition. 4. Combine the flour with the baking powder, and add them to the batter, alternating with the juice. Mix with a fork until the batter is smooth. Don’t overmix! 5. Mix half a cup of chips into the batter. 6. Transfer the batter to a lined 9x13” pan. 7. Sprinkle the remaining chips over the cake. 8. Bake the cake for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out dry.

ou may not know me, but I know you. You chew slightly louder than the average individual, and I will never forget that as long as I live. And you will never know of the effort it takes to nod, chat and smile when I need to dine with you. You may not know me, but your louder-than-thenorm whispering as you daven shakes me to the core. And not to greater heights in kavanah — naw! I cannot speak to my King with the steamroller sounds your whispers generate in my head!

Oh, you’re convinced I’m off the deep end, aren’t you? Meet a woman afflicted with misophonia, a real, neurological thing that makes one fantasize about punching loud chewers in the face. You think this sounds loony? Trust me, or ask any misophonic in your area: I’m downplaying things. Before you send CPS to my door, I’m a normal — I daresay, even good! — mother. My precocious little imps are respectably clothed, adequately fed and free of suspicious bruises. I give goodnight kisses and let my munchkins reciprocate in my ear. I cook fine meals and do laundry even if it gets undone in moments. As long as you don’t chew, slurp or snuffle loudly in my vicinity, my pulse is fine. From whence the monster? I don’t know. Doctors Pawel and Margaret Jastreboff, the couple who studied this thing and named it misophonia in 2001, don’t know how much nurture impacts this spectacular nisayon, but they maintain that it’s a real neurological disorder, and for that I thank them. The validation they gave me is priceless. Until somewhere in my twenties, I thought of this thing as a particularly unflattering idiosyncrasy. Then came that watershed moment when I discovered misophonia: My meshugas had a name! Misophonia derives from the Greek “hatred of sound” It affects a bunch of people, and lots of other people are researching it at this very moment in time. People with misophonia are affected emotionally by common sounds — usually those made by others, and usually ones that other people don’t pay attention to. Sounds like breathing, yawning or chewing create a fightor-flight response that triggers anger and a desire to escape. Desire to

escape? Ha! That sounds extremely eidel when aligned with my experience. Desperate urge to hot-air-balloon it outta the roof is more like it! Misophonia affects some worse than others and can lead to isolation, as people suffering from this condition try to avoid these trigger sounds. Reading this information, I felt reborn and nearly sobbed from the happiness of discovering that I’m not crazy. Research on the topic is still pretty much in its infancy, with a small study in 2019 suggesting that misophonia may develop thanks to a hypersensitive connection between the auditory cortex and salience network. The former is the part of the brain that processes sounds; the latter is responsible for determining which sounds and other stimuli you pay attention to. This irregular connection, they say, leads to increased activity in certain parts of the brain, prompting the intense emotional reaction that misophoniaafflicted persons suffer. A different small study, this in 2021, linked misophonia to larger amygdala volume along with irregular brain connectivity. The amygdala helps process emotions, including the accompanying reactions to things that frighten or threaten you. Researchers suggest that the response to certain sounds may relate, in part, to the amygdala’s size. Bottom line? Brains in misophonia sufferers seem to be wired differently, and they perceive specific trigger sounds as threatening. Since much about misophonia is colored in shades of unknown, many health care providers are not familiar with it and would not be of much help were a patient to reach out about it. But this is sort of a moot point, because there is no known cure for the thing. I’m lucky to hail from a family of quiet eaters (eh, mostly; offenders shall remain nameless and should be happy I’m still talking to them). The spouse eats like a malach. But what of dining with people who wouldn’t know misophonia if it hits them in the face, and who consider slurping soup or compote a sign of appreciation for its taste? I love serving the soup so I can sit down last and hope that at least half the table is done by then. Also, restroom breaks. I do have a ray of sunshine in my life, and that is my best friend. She has misophonia too. Does it get better than that? Much as I wish she’d have been spared the horrors, at least I’ve got someone in the trenches plotzing along with me. I’ll never forget the cartoon I found and shared with her.

It showed a burning house and a naughty kid smirking in the foreground. The caption: “Serves them right for chewing so loudly!” Are you horrified? The bestie and I cackled. Never had we felt so understood! We share many triggers and are constantly supporting each other through our fears and tears. It is she whom I can call Motzei Pesach and say, “There we are, an entire table chewing matzah, and I’m smiling and looking normal, and they have no clue!”
lifetime thing. There will always be trigger sounds around you. This is your life.” Checking in with reality and accepting what cannot be changed goes a long way toward serenity. And everyone stops eating at some point, right? Plus, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. If my kids are all eating super snacks in the car, which, until my husband drives a convertible, is sealed off from escape while we’re driving, I grab a bag and join the chorus. It makes things better, somehow. I’ve tried firing up my mommy-heart to combat the misophonia craziness. My kid will be munching his way through a snack perilously close to my ear — loud lip-smacking and all — and it takes all of my rachmanus to stop myself from storming out of the room. I touch hands and stroke peyos and bangs. I initiate conversation about cheder and school and get lost in the details of their sweet, precious lives. That works. Sometimes. And sometimes it’s just plain hard. Nay, excruciating! Like, find me a mountain or closet to scream off of or into! Like the time my son snorted and sniffled his way through a months-long cold and I went to pieces. Or when I’m supposed to carry on a phone conversation with someone who’s eating, which my fellow misophonics will know is the absolute worst, worst, worst thing ever. And yes, you blissfully clueless people. I italicized that because I think it should be upgraded to felony status. Eating while on the phone is the biggest torture to which you can subject a misophonia-sufferer, and since you never know for sure if you’re talking to one, just don’t do it, okay? Finish eating, bentch and talk. In that order. Because you cannot imagine the raw terror that strikes the heart of a misophonic when she hears this phrase over the phone line: “Hang on a second; I’m going to wash!” Okay, folks, end rant. Not because I’ve depleted my say on the matter, but because, as aforementioned, I am a very nice person. And I respect The Boro Park View’s advertisers’ space. So for those of you who suffer: I am with you in your pain. It’s real. It’s teeth-gnashingly present. And only Moshiach can rescue us from this, may it be soon! And for those of you who are blessedly free of this disorder: Be grateful. Be kind. Be quiet.
I know how misunderstood you can feel when you’re looked upon as a cantankerous person with shabby middos and a grade Z-minus in ahavas Yisroel. I know that some misophonics suffer more than me, some less. Triggers vary from bodily sounds like chewing, sniffling, coughing and the like, to pen-clicking, clothes-rustling, page-turning and even kugelach-playing! I know there’s help to be had for this. Therapies for every type of affliction abound, and misophonia, this ferocious thing, is not to be left out. But I don’t want to talk about that now. Because, more importantly, I want to reach out to every person with misophonia and say: I get it. You’re normal. I validate and congratulate you for every battle you’ve surely fought. I know how misunderstood you can feel when you’re looked upon as a cantankerous person with shabby middos and a grade Zminus in ahavas Yisroel when nothing is further from the truth! I know how inconsequential your suffering can be made to be, how you can wither from the despair of not being able to fight every triggering sound-inducer because there are so many, and you love them, and so you must be nice to them even if they unwittingly make you so, so sad. Days in a misophonic’s life vary, with trigger levels often fluctuating. From years of trial and error, I’ve managed to put together some semblance of what does and doesn’t work for me with this disorder. First: No use pretending this isn’t happening or wishing it away. I find that when I’m accosted by triggering sounds, running the mantra of “I can’t, I can’t, this cannot be happening, get me outta here” does nothing to calm me and everything to ratchet up the heat in my blood. On the other hand, I have tried this selftalk successfully: “Your misophonia is a 106

Dr. Aviva Klugmann, an audiologist, fears that misguided stigmas and lack of information are exacerbating hearing loss in the community, with a devastating impact on elderly quality of life.
Among the many gemachim in our community, one of the more unusual ones lends something people rarely want or ask for. Gemach Od Yeshama (what a brilliant name!) provides ear plugs for ba’alei simcha to put out for their wedding guests to use when the decibel levels rise during dancing. They also offer those big headphones to cover little children’s developing ears while the ear-splitting music plays. Before you roll your eyes, remember that a leading cause of hearing loss is loud noise, something we are constantly exposed to at the many simchos filling our calendars. Now, it may be naive and futile to try and get the music lower at weddings, but some other solutions are surprisingly simple and effective for dealing with the inevitable degeneration of our hearing senses. In fact, noise-induced hearing loss is the one of few chronic health conditions that are 100% preventable. One person who has been sounding the alarm (not literally — that would be too loud) about loss of hearing, its negative effects, and how technological advances have made treatment easy is Dr. Aviva (Ziemba) Klugmann. We turned the volume up (again, not that way) to hear her talk about hearing and hearing loss.
hear clearly can suddenly pick up sounds in a way they haven’t been able to in years. It’s an amazing junction of technology and health care: a tiny computer that transforms a major disability into a nonissue. You have been passionately advocating for more awareness about hearing loss. What do you think people don’t know or fail to realize?
There are several things. One is, as mentioned, the misconception over what hearing aids look like and the thought that it will make one look disabled. Another major factor is that as people age, it is natural that their hearing will begin deteriorating, the same way our eyesight, athleticism and other bodily functions start slowing down. Yet when hearing loss is pro-
Before we begin, can you please share with us how you found yourself in this field?
My father, Dr. David Ziemba, is a beloved doctor in Boro Park, so I grew up watching how quality medical care can change lives. But what got me stuck on audiology is the direct and immediate impact it has on the patient, and the instant gratification that comes with it. Once you see the magic before your eyes, there’s no turning back. What are you referring to when you talk about the magic you see?
Today’s hearing aids are nothing like people imagine. Tiny little pieces can be custom-made to fit deeply in an individual’s ear, with nobody around them even noticing. With meticulous programming, audiologists can set the hearing aids so that people who don’t
gressive and happens slowly over time, you can’t hear the sounds you’re missing. Often, the individuals fail to acknowledge or refuse to admit what is happening, and family members around them don’t realize the need to be on the lookout before precious time is lost. You say that precious time is lost. But aren’t there these magical solutions you mentioned earlier?
Great question. Neglected hearing loss presents many more issues than a hearing aid can fix. It’s important to understand that your auditory system goes

“rusty” in the same way a hand that isn’t used for years can’t just snap back into use. This is called atrophy and requires the brain to relearn how to hear properly, which only gets more difficult over time. When someone with hearing loss does start to hear through their new devices, we have to start on a much lower volume so that it’s not too intense and they can slowly reacclimate. In addition, untreated hearing loss is associated with dementia, depression, cognitive decline, higher falls risk, higher health care costs and anxiety. It has an overall negative effect on one’s ability to socialize and remain “with it.” These effects take a toll, and treating hearing loss five or ten years later after its onset will not reverse these effects. Is the hearing damage also permanent?

A brain that is deprived of sharp sound for many years is not going to tolerate it smoothly. While hearing aids can give you back an amazing range of sound, they can’t fix the auditory processing issues that come along with untreated hearing loss. Then there’s the effects of cognitive decline, which is not reversible. I find it ironic when people say they don’t want hearing aids so they don’t “look old.” Treating hearing loss is one of the very few things that is research-proven to actually help you “stay young.” If we’re being frank, asking “What?” all the time doesn’t make one appear youthful when compared to an invisible device...

Much later than they should… Some individuals are proactive about this, but far too many aren’t. I had a patient who finally realized he needed help when someone told him that a friend was niftar, to which he responded, “Mazel tov!” I should also note that I’ve had others show up thinking they need hearing aids, and it turned out their ears were clogged with wax (common in old age). Both of these groups share one thing in common: They shouldn’t have waited this long before seeking treatment.

Is hearing loss more prevalent in the frum world?
What are modern hearing aids like, and what is the process for acquiring them?
Hearing loss is widespread in any community with high levels of noise. There is documented research showing that people in underdeveloped countries with less “noise pollution” maintain better hearing into their older years. We, baruch Hashem, go to weddings constantly, and the damage accumulates over time. If people could feel the long-term effects immediately, perhaps we wouldn’t push it off so much. But what is certainly more prevalent in the frum world is neglecting hearing loss — taking for granted that zeidy or bubby can’t hear well, and not utilizing available solutions. This is surprising and bothersome to me, as our community is so machshiv our elderly, and our grandparents have so much more to hear.
Hearing aids today are tiny smart devices that can be set and adjusted to meet each individual’s needs and rate of progress. They basically take the sound around them and amplify or fine-tune it so that the brain picks it up clearly. Many are rechargeable, Bluetooth-compatible, and programmable via remote care. In some cases, they’re covered by insurance.
What changes would you wish to see in the community?
We need to acknowledge hearing loss as something that happens as we age, and we should start looking at these inconspicuous tiny devices as normally as we do contact lenses or glasses. Experts say that only one in five people who can benefit from hearing aids actually uses them. I’m afraid the number is even higher in our community — and there is no reason it has to be this way.
You’ve been passionate about this topic in every possible forum. What has the experience been like?
The gap between the current level of awareness and the available solutions is so wide that no forum is going to bridge it. I was coming from working in a huge, cutting-edge hospital, where I was working closely with physicians, professionals and researchers to advance hearing care, particularly in the field of geriatrics. I opened a private practice in Monsey to implement all of these findings, with one goal: to simply and effectively help people hear better. I will still say that most of my patients suffered from hearing loss long before they showed up, and most of what I do all day is trying to reverse that damage caused over time. With more awareness and knowledge in our community, I hope that will change.
Thank you. We hear you loud and clear!

FACT: EVERY EAR IS UNIQUE, AND EVERY EAR-PIERCING A NEAR-SCIENCE.
NI GENUD LET’S GO BEHIND THE SCENES WITH MRS. CHA AND LEARN WHAT IT TAKES TO GET THE EARRING IN JUST THE RIGHT SPOT.
How did you get into the field of ear-piercing?
I began piercing ears over 25 years ago. My parents own Bejeweled, a highend jewelry store in Monsey, and when they opened, I decided to offer ear piercing as a service. Through the sale of earrings at Bejeweled we’d become very aware of the frustration people experience when their ears are pierced incorrectly and they can’t wear certain types of earrings. The positioning really makes a big difference, and is actually the most important part of piercing ears. People really appreciated that Bejeweled offered the service because at the time, there weren’t many frum places 126

that offered it in Monsey. How do you find that perfect spot to position the earring?
The truth is that every person has two different ears. Sometimes it’s more obvious, and other times less so. You really have to consider each set of ears and try to figure out where you want the earring on each ear, and try to make them look as even as possible. Many people are born with unusual ears. Some have unusually shaped earlobes. Some people have double lobes or skin tags, and ears can be detached, semi-attached or attached. Some people even have one ear that’s detached and one that’s attached! It’s a whole science. Whatever ears a person has, we try to get their earrings to look the best they possibly can. What kind of training did you get?
The initial training involved watching it being done and practicing on foam earlobes. You have to make sure you feel confident that you know what you’re doing and that you’re using proper hygiene and sterility. There are sterile kits
that get used for every piercing, and you learn with experience to be flexible to choose the best spot for each set of ears you pierce. For example, some people have stitched earlobes, meaning they were torn in the past. In this type of case, you have to work around the scarring. What kind of specialty supplies do you use to pierce ears?
Alcohol, marking pens, the piercing instrument, a mirror… and lollipops for the little kids! At what age do most people pierce their ears?
I pierce ears on people of all ages. While I do pierce many infants’ ears, some babies get theirs done in a kimpeturin heim. Then there are little kids who just stopped sucking their thumb and are rewarded with earrings, girls who are turning bas mitzvah... and some adults, too. It’s really all ages who get their ears pierced.
How old was the oldest person whose ears you pierced?
That would be my grandmother, who was probably close to 80. She had lost way too many clip-ons and decided it was time to pierce her ears! I’ve heard that in a kimpeturin heim, a little boy once got his ears pierced by accident… I’m not sure whether or not it’s true, but what could be done in such a situation?
That’s a pretty bad story, but the earrings just need to be taken out and the hole allowed to close up. A mark would remain for a while, and it would fade eventually. Did you ever have any mishaps?
Mishaps don’t usually happen, but I once had the piercing instrument get stuck because a girl jumped and pulled away her head. It was scary. I had to try to figure out how to apply pressure to make the machine open. Another little customer once jumped, and the earring didn’t come out in the intended spot. I just pulled it out, and we repierced it in the right place. These aren’t typical stories, though. I’ve also had kids pass out from fright. That’s unpleasant and pretty scary. What are the most popular earrings these days?
For newborns, a lot of people will stick with the diamond

stud, but there’s no right answer. I encourage people to choose a pair that looks best to their face. Some people need a pop of color, but others look better in diamonds. Sometimes it can take quite a long time to choose a pair of earrings. How long should starter earrings be left in before putting in another pair?
My recommendation is at least three months on an adult, and at least a year on babies or kids. That’s because these earrings are the safest for the ears. Rushing the process isn’t worth it. What can someone do to avoid infection?
I pierce using only 14-karat gold — nothing plated — in order to prevent infection. I encourage a little topical antibiotic usage for a few days in case someone is hypersensitive, but most people don’t have a problem. What if someone had holes that have closed up in the past or if they’ve been struggling with infection?
We just restart the process by giving them a new starter pair. IF YOU’RE NEW to the pierced-ear club, enjoy your new set of earrings and take pleasure in having them placed in just the right spot!

H I S T O R Y Lone Earpiece The 1880s saw the world’s first headphones. They came with a single earpiece that was connected to a rectangular contraption, along with a mouthpiece for transmission. The contraption rested on the user’s shoulder and weighed between six and eleven pounds. It was used mainly by telephone operators.
An Idea Cooked in the Kitchen In 1910, Utah-native Nathaniel Baldwin mailed a sample pair of telephone headsets to the U.S. Navy, proposing his invention for military use. A quick test proved that these headphones drastically surpassed the model used by naval radio operators. After tweaking the design — featuring two earpieces and a headband connecting them — based on the Navy’s recommendations, Baldwin received an order from the Navy. And that’s when an unusual problem cropped up: Baldwin’s production capabilities were very limited! Each pair of headphones was being fashioned in his little Utah kitchen.
After moving production to a factory, Baldwin’s contract with the Navy stipulated a set price that could never be raised. Fun Fact: Although the Navy advised Baldwin to patent the new model, Baldwin deemed it too trivial an innovation to bother!
Going Public Until after World War II, headphones were used for communication only. In 1957, John Koss, a musician and entrepreneur, developed what he called a “private listening system” intended for use with the phonograph. Now people could enjoy music from the Koss Model 390 phonograph, a device that included a phonograph, speaker and headphone jacks. The problem was that headphones were not yet commercially available. Koss partnered with an audio engineer, and they designed headphones that had two molded plastic cups with three-inch speakers inside, which were covered with perforated plastic and foam ear pads.
A nifty gadget initially marked for the army and communications, the headphone has morphed into an everyday staple for many. Let’s hear more about its history and functions. Time To Move Already in the 1960s, decades before Bluetooth, wireless headphones came into existence. They were known as “radio headphones” and used radio antennas to allow users to listen wherever they were. In the 1970s, headphones were used for listening to records on clunky record players. Only when Sony came out with their first Walkman in 1979 did the need arise for lightweight, portable headphones. When Apple released the iPod, portable digital music came into vogue, leading to a vast market for cheap, lightweight earbuds.
Headphones were beginning to take on the look we know…
Out of the Blue King Harald I of Denmark (d. 985) was nicknamed “Bluetooth” after his dead tooth, and he merited having Bluetooth technology named after him as well! The inspiration came from an executive from Intel, who suggested the code name since the new wireless link was to unite the PC and cellular industries just like King Bluetooth united Scandinavia. The term was to be only a temporary designation, but as it turned out, it stuck!

F U N C T I O N S In the Studio There are a number of reasons why singers wear headsets while recording. The headphones help singers hear a click track, ensuring everyone stays on beat. This allows for overdubbing and multitrack recording, so each instrument and voice can be processed individually and layered for a complete track.
S T A T S
$34.8 billion Net earnings of the headphone industry in 2020
On the Plane Dr. Amare Bose tried accessing in-flight entertainment while flying in 1978, but the engine noise was too loud for him to enjoy it. He immediately began to plan the first noisecanceling headphones, soon to be his claim to fame with his Bose Corporation. Noise-canceling headphones were initially targeted for the aviation industry, protecting pilots and crew from the loud noises in and around the cockpit.
In the Army The makes and models of headsets used by the military are varied, featuring both active noise-canceling functions that ensure troops don’t go deaf from combat clatter, and a communication tool that can be used for ground operations.
At the Gym Rhythmic beats can improve coordination and cadence, which is why doing aerobics or running exercises may be more effective with headphones on.
60/60 rule Experts recommend keeping earbud volume up to 60%, for up to 60 minutes at a time.
12 to 35 Age with the highest exposure to unsafe sound levels from personal audio devices, putting an estimated 1 billion young people worldwide at risk for hearing loss, according to the World Health Organization.
Then again, there are those who don headsets at the gym merely as a fashion statement…
Myth or Fact? Many people believe that headphones are safer than earphones, because earphones sit deep inside the ear canal, closer to the eardrum. In truth, both can generate high volumes, and extensive listening can be harmful from either one.
