‘As an SLP and Supervisor with a strong interest in the treatment of stuttering I’ve taken many trainings. However, I was doubtful that the methods learned would be of practical value. Using R’ Kaufman’s methods, I am now excited to treat people who stutter through his practical and concrete program .’
As a former stutterer R’ Kaufman has a deep understanding of the psychological needs of those who stutter. His clear & straightforward method is exceptionally successful!

(Re: FYI: Color Psychology, Issue 121) In the section of this article describing the effect the color pink has, the author writes that it’s “a pity that boys rooms can’t be painted pink.” This is ridiculous, because the article doesn’t seem to cover the color blue, a color which research has shown — especially in the case of light-blue — to have a very calming and relaxing effect. Many people use that color for bedrooms because blue is extremely cool and relaxing. So we should be saying the opposite: Perhaps we should paint girls rooms blue, since blue be the better of the two! D.E.

A HEALTHY HIT
(Re: Wholesome and Heavenly, Issue 121) Thanks for the recipes this week. So far I’ve tried two of the three featured ideas, and they’re both out of this world! (Even those in my family who “don’t like healthy stuff” enjoyed them immensely.) In the date truffles I actually substituted the fresh dates for dried ones because that’s what I had at home, and they came out great. A Reader
A REFRESHING READ
(Re: The Black Sheep) The Black Sheep is outstanding! Esther Rapaport’s amazing way of writing, beautiful hashkafos and unbelievable ideas are always so, so refreshing! And the best part of this serial is that it’s so interesting and with a great pull to read it, all while not being wild and too panicinducing. C.R.K.

MORE ON MISOPHONIA
LUXURIOUS
(Re: My Life With Misophonia, Issue 120) The article was amazing and so well put. The phone calls kept coming from those checking if it was I who had written it! I’d like to add a few points. • As a fellow misophonia sufferer, I’d like for all of my peers to know that they are free of blame. I know that this “monster” is “self-induced.” • The closer the person is to us, the more nervous we get from the irritating sounds. Why? This remains a mystery and is as inconclusive as the entire misophonia thing. • An interesting “heimish” study conducted by yours truly and a friend found that someone who’s suffered from many ear infections as a child is more prone to have misophonia! • I’d also like to add some more popular triggers: • Sinks dripping (that broken faucet!) • Telephone messages and alerts • Chair-scraping • Recliner-rocking • A fork scraping against teeth Imo Anochi B’tzarah

(Re: My Life With Misophonia, Issue 120) I want to chime into the conversation regarding misophonia and misokinesia. First, while the article and letters suggest that there is no cure for misophonia and its sister misokinesia, I don’t see why exposure therapy should not be effective for this condition. Exposure therapy basically requires that you expose yourself over and over again to the source of your anxiety. It also requires that you do not engage in any protective actions, like closing your ears, leaving the room, or even just grimacing inwardly or outwardly in response to the trigger. This is very effective for overcoming phobias, anxiety and chronic pain (as per Dr. Sarno’s method, wherein a person stops treating and fighting his pain, which causes it to finally “burn out”). So to all of you misophonia sufferers out there, gather the children round, hand out the crunchy snacks and listen to the chomping. Have your friends call you and schmooze while they chew loudly into the phone. It’s going to be very, very painful. You might want to use the flooding technique, where you expose yourself to your trigger and do not leave until you feel the terror and anger burn out in you. If that’s too much, you can expose yourself to your trigger for shorter periods of time more frequently until the terror and anger and disgust slowly release their grip on you. THE BORO PARK VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

Another thing I want to point out on the subject of misophonia is that many sufferers have adopted a pretty self-centered attitude in regard to their responses to different sensory stimuli. It has unfortunately become very acceptable in our society for the person who suffers from a particular sensitivity (and many of us suffer from all sorts of unique sensitivities) to expect the world to be sensitive to their needs, despite the fact that they understand that they have just that: a sensitivity. It has also become acceptable and commendable to verbalize our needs to all those around us, and so it is not common for miso sufferers to drive all those around them crazy. “Can you stop chewing so loudly?” “Keep your mouth closed when you eat.” “Stop clicking that pen!” “Sit straight in your chair.” “Ew, that’s disgusting!” All of these expressions are in contradiction to the middos of savlanus, anavah and aidelkeit. Of course, one should be exceedingly kind to miso sufferers. If you are near somebody whom you happen to know has a particular sensitivity, please work on your middos and be kind to them. It is ironic that those who will never bother others with their sensitivities will endure great suffering to accommodate other people’s sensitivities. It’s not really a contradiction; it’s the hallmark of a baal middos. In our home, whenever one child gets nervous from another, I command the “sufferer” to remove himself from the situation instead of harassing his sibling to “be quiet” or “stop singing.” It’s an ironclad rule in my home: If you don’t like it, remove yourself from the situation. Then, once the victim is no longer within earshot, I’ll approach the instigator and quietly command, “You know this bothers your brother, so stop doing it.” May all miso sufferers out there find their yeshuah b’karov. Sincerely, Chana Horowitz

(Re: All You Have To Do Is Ask, Issue 118) First, I would like to thank you for your great publication; we all enjoy it very much. You recently ran an article regarding writing letters to customer service departments at consumer goods companies. I want to point out that the same is true for banks and credit card
companies. It’s very simple to get onetime charges and interest fees waived. Just call up the bank or credit card company and ask them to waive the charge for you. You’ll be surprised at how glad they are to accommodate their customers. L.S.
THE SERVICE IS FOR YOU
(Re: All You Have To Do Is Ask, Issue 118) Thank you for your article on customer service requests. No company wants a dissatisfied consumer. I once contacted a pencil company when my pencil sharpened down to the eraser without producing a point — and received a box of pencils. I’ve reached a baggie company when a pack of plastic baggies turned out to be stuck together into one mass — and received a box of baggies. Recently, I opened a dip container and contacted the company for a refund when I found unhealthy-looking discoloration under the wrapper. They were very courteous. But my brand-new washing machine is the most significant thing I’ve ever acquired. After six years of struggling with a “lemon,”, which yielded load after load of sopping wet laundry (after the spin cycle was complete) and necessitated frequent technician visits, the company finally caved in. They informed me that the replacement part needed for the permanent repair cost more than the machine is worth, and they sent me a check covering the cost of a more upgraded washer. Customer service lines have been put in place to assist the consumer in achieving satisfaction from a product. Use them. A satisfied consumer, R.S.
VALIDATION IS WONDERFUL
(Re: I Wouldn’t Hurt a Fly, Issue 117) I know I am late in the game, but I’d like for credit to be given where due. The Windex-spraying woman’s writeup was super validating. And validation is a wonderful feeling for a harried wannabe, trying-to-be, supposed-to-be balabusta. Thank you! DEAR EDITOR, I am writing in response to the letter writer regarding Miracle Clay for acid reflux. I want to share my experience to your readers, and I wish to let you know that Miracle Clay isn’t just another remedy for your medicine chest. It’s a ‘must have’ for every Yiddish home. Since my first encounter with Miracle Clay, it became a staple in my house. It works for so many things that its just impossible to list all my stories here. I’ll start with my first experience and I’ll share some other, but I find it imperative to inform you that it just works. Always. The first time I was introduced to Miracle Clay was several years ago, when my husband and I have visited an Infectious Disease Physician for a third recurrence of a nasty MRSA infection - then known as staph infection, when the doctor informally advised us to look into natural alternatives versus a third bout of antibiotics. He explained that if we treat this MRSA with another stronger dose of antibiotics, when this infection returns (notice how he said ‘when’ and not ‘if’, being that MRSA medically keeps returning, however, with Miracle Clay it completely gets out of the body, as I later learned) there will be no treatment left to cure this. Wow. I really hadn’t expected to hear this. At that time, I had a houseful of little kids, and between all of them, I found myself doling out amoxicillin rather often. Why, here it was an ear infection, while the other was fighting off a strep and then another ear infection…. This was routine, constant. I had never given it any doubt and for years I happily “treated” (quite literally, they were happy to take it) my little offspring with bubble gum
flavor and off to school. And here I’m sitting in a doctor’s office telling me to go natural, for heavens sake! And so, we left the medical office and starting inquiring how to treat a nasty MRSA outside the medical walls. It was nothing short of a miracle that we were introduced to Mrs. Rosenbaum of Nature’s Cure. She guided us through the treatment process, loaded with knowledge, wisdom and oh so much patience! We applied a patch of Natures Miracle Clay Cream over the MRSA as clearly instructed on their Wound Healing Brochure (available at the health food store). We also followed the protocol to irradicate MRSA from the system by taking Immune Power and Miracle Clay internally. Within hours (!!!) there was a huge improvement! Roughly twenty-four hours later, you wouldn’t believe that there had been anything going on! Overloaded with gratitude to Hashem for sending us His angel in the form of Mrs. Rosenbaum, along with her vast knowledge in His world, we have promised to take our unreal experience to enlighten others who are suffering and unaware of this wonderous remedy. And it wasn’t before long that my husband was able to give forward Hashem’s vastness to another yid in kind. Namely – his brother. No better night than on Leil Shemirim the first night of Pesach. We were all gracing the seder table at my husband’s parents’ home. Dressed in Yom Tov finery, faces aglow, filled with excitement and anticipation. The Yom Tov has finally arrived.
We soon realized that something was amiss. One boy has come up with a fever and a bad infection what looked like an ugly case of MRSA. My in-laws were at a loss. To call Hatzalah or not to call? After all, this was the night of the first seder. Who wants to spend such a night in the emergency room? But then, how can they not? How could they leave this untreated while it called for immediate help? When we heard their dilemma, my husband knew just what he had to do. And so, he found himself caring for his scared little brother while the seder has begun in its full glory downstairs. Firstly, he started with wrapping the affected area well with Miracle Clay Cream and instructed him to take the Clay orally along with Immune Power – another amazing product from Nature’s Cure worthy of an article on its own right. But I must mention that what’s going on this winter, it is worth to look into this product as it’s a lifesaver! Along with Colloidal Silver you will b’ezras Hashem not know of kids home from school (unless it’s a snow day. If anyone knows a cure for that, keep me posted). So, back to our story. Throughout the seder and for the remaining of the night, my husband changed the dressing every hour. By morning, all the puss was oozing out until there was hardly anything of this infection left! With another bit of care the infection was completely gone! Only imagining how this could have turned out had we not been recently educated with our own experience, sends dread through my veins. All my brain could think of is - Chasdei Hashem! Thank you, Hashem, for gifting us such a wonderful world with his amazing healing remedies. And to think that this product is just to cure a MRSA would be deceiving! Let me tell you,
since then, we’ve healed almost everything with this amazing product. From stomach pain, indigestion, infections, warts, cellulites, eczema, even toothaches and healing cavities – literally. My mother used to have terrible gums which required her to visit a periodontist for annual invasive cleaning. I strongly urged her to brush her teeth twice daily with Clay Cream and only rinse her mouth after 15 minutes. She decided to give it a shot. By her next appointment with the periodontist, he looked at her in bewilderment! He told her ‘You’ve got a clean bill of teeth – I mean, health! Whatever you’re doing, just keep doing it!’ Oh, she happily does! And how could I not mention the time when my brother healed a burn with this very same clay. He was jumping to the roof in agony! We told him to apply clay and he immediately calmed down! Ever forgetting that anything has happened a minute before. Not as much as the slightest scar to be seen. And the time when another relative had a red line from a MRSA which completely vanished with the help of this cream. As I said in the beginning, I could sit here and write about Miracle Clay and its wonders for another decade. But I won’t bore you. I’ll just say this: Get your container of Natures Miracle Clay from your local health food store, and start witnessing miracles yourself! For anyone out there struggling, I can be reached at 347-452-4481 from 1-3 and 9-11 P.M. or call Natures Cure 718-302-5581 from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. they are very helpful.

We want to bring to your attention the worldwide paper shortage that is greatly impacting the printing industry, including The Boro Park View. COVID-related issues, which have tremendously slowed down production over the past year, are now compounded by both the extension of a Finnish paper mill firm strike and the truckers strike in Canada, which are directly affecting our suppliers. Due to the cumulative impact on production, you may notice short-term changes in the quality of our paper. While we are doing everything we can to procure the top-grade paper we are known for, further drops in quality may be inevitable in the coming weeks. Nevertheless, you can be assured that our content will remain as superior as always. We are carefully watching the unfolding situation and will continue to update you on its repercussions. We are hopeful that this temporary issue will be resolved soon and that we will revert to our usual premium paper as soon as the situation resolves, b’ezras Hashem.

The Boro Park View
What are various factors that make up the current paper crisis? The rapid growth of online purchases, greatly exacerbated by COVID-19 lockdowns, has channeled much of the pulp and manpower to the production of packaging materials and corrugated boxes. The shipping industry is seeing galloping cost hikes and prolonged delays due to container shortages, stalling the delivery of the goods from abroad. Further freight issues are caused by a truck driver crisis, which has led to a truck-to-load shortage this January of ten truckloads to every truck, a record high. To compound an already difficult paper situation, the ongoing paper mills strike has shut down the plants at a major Finnish forestry group, halting the work of it’s 3,000 employees. The Canada truckers protest both diverted the means for a flow of goods to cross the border and obstructed the border with its convoy, preventing Canadian paper from reaching the U.S.
Where does most of The Boro Park View’s paper supply come from? Finland and Canada are from the world’s leading paper and pulp producers, and our paper is sourced from these two countries.
Why are the paper mill employees on strike? The employees of leading Finnish paper, pulp and biofuel plants have launched a strike action on January 1, after the company and its workers union failed to come to a new collective labor agreement.
How long is the strike expected to last? The strike has been extended three times since it began. The latest extension was announced Friday, February 4, and will be in effect until March 12, unless an agreement between the company and its union can be signed prior to this date.
Why are Canadian truckers on strike? On January 15, Canada imposed a vaccine mandate for the trucking industry. Under the new regulations, unvaccinated Canadian truckers reentering Canada after delivering goods must get tested for COVID-19 and quarantine. This sparked an instant reaction, and soon a large convoy of truck drivers and their supporters took to the roads in protest. It soon snowballed into blockades in the Canadian capital of Ottawa and an obstruction at the U.S.-Canada border, paralyzing parts of the country.
How long is the truckers protest expected to last? While the Canadian government has issued a state of emergency and is working on ending the protests, at time of print, the situation is still unfolding.

PARSHAS KI SISA On Fire
Klal Yisroel was commanded to contribute exactly a half-shekel coin per person for the Mishkan. Rashi cites the Midrash that explains that Hashem showed Moshe Rabbeinu a coin of fire and told him that this was the weight of the coin that each Yid should contribute. Why was the coin made of fire? Why did Hashem not show Moshe a regular silver coin? RAV YEHOSHUA LEIB DISKIN (1818–1898) used to share a couple of words of mussar toward the end of his shiur for his elite talmidim in the city of Brisk. One time, the topic was the nisyonos that man experiences in this world, and the means he has to overcome them. “There is the nisayon of poverty,” he said. “It’s a challenge that many of us are very familiar with on a daily and even hourly basis. But there is an even greater challenge with money, and that is the nisayon of wealth. “When a person becomes wealthy, he is liable to forget from where the money came, and he becomes tightfisted, as if he himself is the proprietor of the wealth. Worse than this,” Rav Yehoshua Leib continued, “is that wealth sometimes causes the person to forget his Creator, as the Torah says, ‘Vayishman Yeshurun vayivat… vayitosh Elokah asahu — and Yeshurun became fat and rebelled… and forsook the G-d Who made them’ (Devarim 32:15).” Later that afternoon, one of Rav Yehoshua Leib’s younger talmidim came to his home. His teeth were chattering, and his hands were trembling in fear. “What happened?” Rav Yeshoshua Leib asked.

“A great tragedy… I just found out that I won the lottery. I now own a large sum of money. According to what I heard today in the Rav’s shiur, wealth is dangerous, and I am so afraid…” Rav Yeshoshua Leib smiled and calmed the quivering yungerman. “True, wealth can be a great stumbling block to man — to man who is unaware of its danger. But one who recognizes the danger from the start, and prepares himself accordingly, won’t be harmed by the wealth. To the contrary! He can be a source of benefit to many people.” The Rav then told his talmid to recite the bracha Hatov V’hameitiv, and he replied with a resounding amen. * * * * *
We can take a message from the coin of fire that Hakadosh Baruch Hu showed Moshe Rabbeinu. Fire has two properties. One is tikkun — to warm, light up and cook. The other is destruction — to burn, smother and devastate. Man holds the power to decide which function of fire to use. He can use fire to build or to destroy. The same holds true of money. If a person knows the proper way to use money, his wealth can be a good thing. But if he chooses to use it foolishly, squandering it on silly things and not sharing it with those less fortunate, his money will only serve to damage and burn, just like the matbeia of fire. * * * * * There’s another lesson to be gleaned from the coin of fire, as the following tale illustrates. A wealthy man once approached Rav Chaim of Volozhin. He was known as a big ba’al tzedakah, distributing huge sums for the poor. One day, his fortune changed. His business took a turn for the worse, and he lost most of his money. “Rebbi,” he said in a brokenhearted voice, “I am going through difficult times. I don’t know how I could possibly listen

Should I decrease the amount of money I give? Or should I rather continue giving, even if it means going into debt? to the cries of the poor people who are dependent on me and will now have nothing. If I want to continue giving tzedakah the way I have until now, I will have no choice but to borrow money from others. I am wondering… Should I decrease the amount of money I give? Or should I rather continue giving, even if it means going into debt for it?” Rav Chaim did not respond immediately. He sat, deep in thought for a while, pondering the situation with his sharp da’as Torah. Rav Chaim was renowned for the depth of his bitachon, which he often spread to other Yidden as well. Finally, he said, “You should continue giving on your generous standard. You needn’t worry about parnassah, because clearly, one who gives tzedakah does not lose out.” The wealthy man listened and continued his righteous ways. Several weeks later, a telegram arrived from the wealthy man. It shared the good news that Rav Chaim’s opinion had been a blessing for this man. His wheel of fortune had suddenly turned for the better again, when he won 500,000 rubles in a lottery. Rav Chaim was happy to hear the news and even repeated the tale to his talmidim in yeshivah to warm their hearts to the revealed hashgachas Hashem. * * * * * When a person gives from his own bank account, even though it may seem as if he is losing, he is most certainly gaining. This message was hidden in the fiery coin shown to Moshe Rabbeinu. Just like when one uses a fire to kindle another flame, the original fire does not lose or get diminished, so too, when a person donates from his own pocket to tzedakah, he needn’t worry that he will lose out.

Con Edison Customers Burning Mad as Utility Bills Soar Colder-than-average temperatures and rising rates have had utility rates skyrocketing, leaving Con Edison customers facing sticker shock as they open their monthly bills. According to New Rochelle Patch, some customers found that their most recent bills were double or triple their usual amounts, with some soaring even higher. Con Edison officials blamed the Olympic-size jumps on rising natural gas prices, and a January 28th Reuters report said that gas prices jumped more than 70% last Thursday before closing up at 46% at the end of the day’s trading. “Con Edison does not make a profit on the commodity,” said a spokesperson for the utility company. “We buy the energy on the wholesale market and provide it to customers at the same price we paid. Energy prices are volatile and can be affected by factors such as weather, demand and economic trends.” That comes as little comfort to city residents. The Upper East Side’s Karen Harper, a retired New York City teacher who lives on a fixed income, received a January gas and electric bill of $602.31, triple the usual amount. Brooklyn’s Michael Fisher saw his bill go from $300 to nearly $900. Assemblywoman Emily Gallagher was one of several elected officials who were inundated with calls about excessive utility bills. She encouraged her constituents to file complaints with the New York State Department of Public Service either online or at 800-342-3377. “A cold winter, a surge in demand, tensions with Russia; all impact the price of natural gas,” wrote Gallagher on social media. “And while many of these forces are outside of Con Ed’s control, they should have been better prepared and more transparent with customers.” New York State Senator Pete Harckham faulted Con Edison for failing to give any kind of explanation or warning about the substantial change in prices. “These massive bills are distressing customers to no end,” said Harckham in a statement. “With all of the ways in which a utility can communicate to its customers, there is no excuse to stun and agitate people with these kinds of increases.” Also joining the chorus of complaints was State Senate Deputy Leader Michael Gianaris, who called for an investigation by the New York State Public Service Com76

mission, reported the New York Post. “These skyrocketing, unexpected costs are hurting New Yorkers’ pockets at an already difficult time,” said Gianiris. “Con Ed needs to answer for this change and help make customers whole.” Adding insult to injury, Con Edison has already petitioned state regulators for permission to raise rates in 2023 to fund investments in renewable energy sources and upgrades to its gas and electric delivery and distribution systems, which the utility said would help keep customers online during severe weather. If approved, area residents could see their electric bills climbing 11.2% and gas prices rising 18.2%. Congressman Tom Suozzi fumed at the proposal, noting that Con Edison has reported annual profits of more than a billion dollars after its previous rate increases. “Asking my constituents to swallow a dramatic single-year increase to their electric and gas bill is unreasonable when they already pay nearly 50% more than the average U.S. household,” said Suozzi.
IRS Facing Backlog of 24 Million Returns as 2021 Tax Filings Begin Those hoping for quick refund checks from the Internal Revenue Service as they file their 2021 tax returns may be disappointed, with the agency facing a backlog of 24 million tax returns still unprocessed from last year. The Washington Post reported that refunds may be delayed by ten months or longer. The pandemic, which had employees working from home and leaving truckloads of paper returns

sitting outside the IRS’ closed offices for months, is just one reason for the backlog. Also to blame, according to a new IRS inspector general report, are a lack of funding to hire new employees, inefficient practices within the agency, and outdated equipment, some of which dates back to the 1960s. In a typical year, the IRS normally has one million or fewer unprocessed returns remaining when January comes, but one IRS official estimated the number of backlogged returns at 6 million last month, while a taxpayer advocate put the number at 10 million or more. Both fall far short of the 24 million number that was just recently reported, which includes 9.7 million paper returns waiting to be processed; 4.1 million returns containing errors because of stimulus payment, pandemic relief or similar issues; 4.1 million amended returns; and 5.8 million pieces of correspondence that have yet to be resolved so that taxpayers can file their returns. According to the IRS, tax returns that are filed electronically are typically processed more quickly than paper returns.
MTA’s Temporary Pilot Program To Cap Weekly Fares for OMNY Riders Hoping to encourage more people to use its contactless One Metro New York system, known as OMNY, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority will be capping fares at $33 per week starting February 28 under a four-month pilot program. Railway Age reported that the program will start anew each Monday, with OMNY riders paying the standard $2.75 for each subway or local bus ride for their first twelve trips. Any additional subway or local bus rides taken through the following Sunday would be free under the program, which will run through the end of June and also includes free subway and bus transfers. The pilot program mirrors the MTA’s seven-day unlimited-ride MetroCard, without riders having to pay up front for their trips as they did with the MetroCard. The MTA plans to discontinue the MetroCard once it has completed the full rollout of OMNY in 2023. Ridership has been slumping dramatically since the onset of the pandemic, and the MTA has been working hard to win commuters back. Agency officials have said that it would consider extending the pilot program or even making it permanent, should it prove to be successful. “We’ve made it a priority to get creative on fares,” said MTA chair and CEO Janno Lieber. “Transit affordability is also an equity issue, and we are committed to providing a wide new range of discounts while ensuring the MTA maintains a solid bottom line.” “We hope riders embrace the new program, and we’ll be watching to see how it affects our operations and farebox revenue,” added MTA chief customer service officer Sarah Meyer. MTA Long Island Railroad and Metro-North tickets are also being offered at reduced prices. As of February 25, twenty trip tickets purchased through MTA e-Tix or at a ticket window will be offered at 20% off comparable peak one-way fares and will be valid for 60 days. The savings also extend to monthly tickets, which are already being sold at a discounted rate and will be offered at an additional 10% off.

CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE RECAP: Sarah
Reiness leaves with the kids, and Ariella stays behind to clean the house. Rabbi Reiness meets with Osher’s father, who accuses Rabbi Reiness of moving his child to a different city without his parents’ consent.
T
he lavender scent suddenly weakened, and Rabbi Reiness took a deep breath. “You are one hundred percent right, Reb Yigal,” he said. “It really doesn’t make sense, and it is exclusively my fault. At the beginning of this process, I thought that Osher was in touch with you. Our approach is to rely on the boys’ responsibility and maturity, because after all, they are not twelve-year-olds.” “In a certain sense, Osher is still a lot like a twelve-year-old,” Mr. Erenbaum snapped as he slid his pen holder from side to side on his desk. “And I was wrong,” Rabbi Reiness continued, ignoring the comment. “I should have made sure that he was coming to us with your support and approval. When I saw Osher the first time, I got the impression that he had one foot in the street already, so pulling him out of there and bringing him to Acco seemed of vital importance to me. The question of whether he had told his parents or not was secondary.” He leaned back in the chair. “Don’t get me wrong. That same evening that I took him to Acco, while he was in my car, I asked him what his parents had to say about it.” “And what did he say?” “That it’s fine and that they don’t mind.” “And that answer sufficed for you.” “I plead guilty, a second time,” Rabbi Reiness said. “In my work with youths whose inner world is so complex and confusing, I’ve learned that pressure and interrogations on my part just make things worse. Especially when it comes to a delicate subject like their connection with home.” “So Osher glossed over the facts,” Yigal grumbled. “And you, the responsible adult, did not make any effort to contact us yourself.” “I did,” Reb Elazar said. “But it’s true that it was insufficient. And I’m sorry.”

Mr. Erenbaum was quiet. He neither accepted the apology nor rejected it. “So what is the objective of this meeting?” he asked finally. “I want to help Osher.” “So do I.” “That’s self-understood. That is why I want to hear a bit from you about his interpersonal relationships. As a father, how did you see him over the years? As far as his communication with people, I mean, and his basic understanding of social codes.” “Listen, Rabbi Reiness. Osher has always been a sweet boy, but he never managed to integrate into the mainstream.” Yigal was still toying with his pen holder. The stiff curtain behind him swayed slightly from the powerful air conditioning. “Not at home and not in school.” “He’s not a bad boy,” Reb Elazar said quietly. “But for some reason, he seems to mess up all the time.” “It happens with you as well?” “With regard to the rules of the place that I direct — no. Our approach is pretty loose, and it’s easy to comply with the rules. But socially, he hasn’t yet found his place. And I’m wondering if it’s because of the incompatibility of the ages — most of the boys are at least two years older than he is — or if there’s another reason.” “It’s probably another reason,” Yigal Erenbaum said. “Because he never really succeeded among peers his own age either.” “So does he have a diagnosis for something in this area?”

“I don’t know. I have to ask my wife the exact details of what he’s been diagnosed with.” He suddenly seemed to open up a bit more. “Look, he’s not our first child whom we took for evaluations and all these things. My oldest daughter also has ADHD, and her difficulties are no less severe than his are. But what can I tell you? She’s always managed better in life than he does.” “My wife told me something to that effect. They had a long conversation, after your daughter decided — ” Reb Elazar smiled “ — to reveal to us that she’s Osher’s devoted older sister.” “She really does better than him; there’s no comparison.” Mr. Erenbaum stood up. “We have no idea why it is this way. Maybe she has more abilities and skills than he does, or perhaps she was able to stick better to her medicine regimen over the years, which he was unable to do because of its endless side effects.” “It’s certainly due to the latter reason,” Reb Elazar said, and he also rose. Osher’s father’s workday had apparently ended some time before. “I’ll be in touch in a few days, b’ezras Hashem. Can you check with your wife if you ever did a communication evaluation, and what the conclusions were?” Erenbaum nodded slowly, and suddenly he looked very, very, weary. The cloying lavender smell again became much more intense, and Rabbi Reiness was happy that the conversation was over and he could escape from the office. It was strange that just when it seemed that Osher’s father’s armor had become more penetrable, he suddenly felt uncomfortable.

AS PURE AS YOUR LITTLE ONE. You can’t afford to bathe them in chemicals that play a role in autoimmune disease, cancer, asthma, eczema, and other illnesses. Lather them in goodness for the best of both worlds.
Reb Elazar donned his hat and warmly proffered a hand. A moment of frozen silence ensued, and then Yigal accepted the handshake. Rabbi Reiness went down in the elevator. If the conversation would have flowed a bit better, and would have concluded with a more promising level of cooperation, perhaps he would have waited until Yigal had shut the lights and locked the door, and they could have gone downstairs together. But they did not seem to have forged such a friendly bond that Mr. Erenbaum would be pleased with the companionship. * * * * * How many years had it been since he’d told bedtime stories to little kids? Elazar smiled to himself and concluded the final sentence: “And the Sheikh lowered his eyes, and everyone saw how, with siyata d’Shmaya, the Rav’s wisdom had saved the Jews!” “Wow, that’s such a great story…” Gadi murmured from his bed. “Uncle Elazar, did you tell your children these kind of stories when they were little?” “Only if they behaved nicely,” his uncle responded, wagging his finger. “And now, to sleep. I’m going to be leaving soon with Aunt Sarah, and you’re going to stay here with Ariella, who’s going to take care of you, okay? Be good, and don’t get out of bed, because if I hear that you got out of bed — there won’t be a bedtime story next time!” His words were met with grins, and he stood up, wished them all a good night, and left the room. “Elazar?” Sarah called from the kitchen. “Your phone is ringing!” She came out to meet him, holding the phone in her apron so that it shouldn’t get dirty from her floury hands. Elazar took the phone, and she returned to the kitchen. “My sister says you’re a real life-saver,” she murmured to Ariella, who was

with her in the room, as she kneaded the mound of dough. “Not that you’ve met all that often, but from her two quick trips home, she was so impressed by you. The children are calm, the house is functioning…” “But it’s really not me,” Ariella argued. “The girls help out so much, it’s amazing. I don’t think I helped this way when I was their age.” “I think you grew up in a home that wasn’t as busy as this one,” Sarah replied with a smile. “Each one with their circumstances.” “Yes, but what I meant to say is that when all is said and done, I don’t do much here.” “You don’t do much?!” Sarah burst out laughing. “During the three visits I’ve made here, it looks like you’re doing a whole lot. I told Bassi that she has to remember that I get all the credit.” “Nu, nu.” Ariella smiled as she mixed carob powder with brown sugar for the yeast dough filling mixture. The dough was made with whole-wheat flour, of course. “Osher’s first evaluation is the day after tomorrow,” she said. Sarah wasn’t sure if it was a statement or a question. “Yes, b’ezras Hashem. My husband will be taking him to Zichron Yaakov.” “Wow, that’s a long drive!” “It is, but he wants to do it for Osher.” “Really? Why?” “I think he has a special place in his heart for him.” “Is that it?” “Why, is that not enough for you?” Ariella was quiet for a long moment. “I’m not used to people helping Osher because they like him.” “So get used to the idea.” Sarah grinned. “My husband loves his students, all of them, and I can tell you that he’s encountered all types of boys. Plenty of them aren’t very easy. But he happens to like Osher, especially; there’s something about him that apparently touched his heart.”
Ariella was quiet, and Sarah laughed. “What do you want me to tell you? That my husband is doing this as a token of appreciation for your help here? That’s not true.” “Fine, then, thank you.” Ariella allowed herself a smile. “Honestly, I’m not sure that his issue is related to his communication skills; I really don’t know…” “Your parents weren’t either sure.” Sarah opened and closed six drawers until she found the rolling pin. “But yesterday your father called and said that he was giving my husband permission to take action in any way he saw fit. Including all these evaluations.” * * * * * Outside the house, Elazar Reiness walked with his scarf wrapped around his neck and covering his face. It was freezing cold, but he did not like speaking with his lawyer when others were around — he just couldn’t concentrate like that — so this was the only way to have the conversation. “So we’ll send it in one month from today, with registered mail,” he repeated thoughtfully. “Yes,” the lawyer replied. “With both of our signatures.” “And they will have to sign that they received it.” “That’s the advantage of registered mail.” “Too bad this registered mail can’t record their response.” Rabbi Reiness’s sigh was partially genuine and partially said in jest. “The house is well protected, right?” “Yes.” “And you haven’t seen suspicious people loitering in the area.” “Not at all. Even all the badgering about selling the house has gone down a lot. I don’t remember the last time someone approached me about it.” “What does your consultant-arbitrator say about this — what’s his name again?”

Imagine... “Menashe Karni. He claims that it could be either a bad sign or a good sign. The good sign is that if they were the ones behind the flood of offers, they decided that I’m not going to do any harm, and that I returned to Acco purely for nostalgic reasons.” “And then the question is what they will do after they get the message about the meeting, a message that will make your intentions very clear.” “Exactly.” “Yes. There’s an even worse option: that they only quieted down temporarily, because they see I’m stubborn, and now they’re looking for a different way to torpedo the whole thing, irrespective of the letter that they do not yet know they are going to get.” The lawyer was quiet. After a long moment, he said, “Either way, we’re sending it and showing up at the meeting with the documents, right?” “Right. I really hope they’ll also show up.” Rabbi Reiness sounded tense. “We’ll promise them some type of payment for the effort to come… I hope that will tempt them. Meanwhile, just as a friend, I would tell you not to think about this meeting so much. Try to keep yourself busy with something else.” The lawyer laughed congenially. “It’s not like you’re unemployed, right?” “No, not at all,” Reb Elazar said with a smile. “Baruch Hashem.” “So go back to your boys and your carpentry shop, and that’s how these two months will pass more quickly. Take it from me.” “Two months and one week.” “If you’re making the effort to correct me like that, then you’d be best off listening to my advice.” Rabbi Reiness agreed. And perhaps it was good that Osher’s first evaluation was scheduled for just two days from now. He had to drive to Zichron Yaakov, talk to Osher on the way, come back, give the shiur…and fill the coming weeks with lots of other activities. Anything to keep his mind off the upcoming meeting.

Reb Elazar bent over the little glass and adjusted the wick. He heard the patter of bare feet behind him, and for a confused moment, he thought it was Gadi. But then he remembered that Gadi was a good few miles away from here.
“Osher?” He didn’t turn around. “Yes, Rebbi.” “I thought you’re asleep. Did you wait for me to come back?” “No, I was sleeping, but then I woke up.” “I hope we didn’t make any noise when we came in.” “No, not at all. I got up just because. What’s the candle for, Rebbi?” “It’s my father’s yahrtzeit tonight.” “That’s a yahrtzeit candle?” Osher came closer. “I’ve never seen anyone light a yahrtzeit candle in oil. I’ve only seen those ready candles, you know, the kind you buy in a store.” “Yes, I know what you mean.” Rabbi Reiness straightened up. “But this is the kind of candle my father used to light for his parents, so I light this type as well.” “Oh, is this also something he left in his will? Together with the treasure?” Reb Elazar smiled. “It’s not a will — it’s something that I, as a son, want to do like my father.” “Are you an only son?” “Yes. I have one sister, and she’s quite a few years older than me.” “So that’s called an only son… But I don’t want to do things like my father does, at all,” Osher said thoughtfully. “I don’t mean after… how do you say it? After he’s a hundred and twenty. I mean in general, like now. If he works in computers, does that mean I have to do the same kind of thing, too? I hate math, and the computer field and math have a lot in common.” “Of course you don’t have to do the same kind of thing. And your father wouldn’t want you to, either. He gave you a Torah chinuch, right? He has other expectations of you, very different ones.” “And I’m not meeting those either.” Osher stared at the little flame. “I think I’m one big disappointment to all the adults I’ve ever met in my life.” “Hey, you’re insulting me!” “Insulting you? Me?” “Yes, what am I? A kid?” Osher blinked. “I don’t get it.” “You said that you’re a disappointment to all the adults that you meet. But I’m an adult, and you don’t disappoint me at all.” “That’s because you didn’t expect anything from me,” Osher replied, without even thinking. To be continued…

N O T- J U S TPIZZA MAKER BY: LE A H S TE R N
Pizza makers debuted only in red. Now Courant makes them in black, as well, offering great milchig and fleishig options for the kosher kitchen. I lined the pizza maker with a parchment-paper round from Dining Collection that has an extended fluted edge, which made for minimal cleanup.

SLOPPY JOE R ATATOUILLE I used dark turkey in this recipe, which can be replaced with any chopped meat. If you’re using ground white chicken or turkey, increase the oil as needed to obtain a moist dish.
INGREDIENTS 4 2 1 1 1 1 2 1 ⅓ 1 1 ½ ¼
T. oil garlic cloves, minced large onion, chopped small eggplant, diced small zucchini, diced cup diced peppers lb. ground meat (6 oz.) can tomato paste cup water T. salt tsp. sugar tsp. basil tsp. pepper
DIRECTIONS 1. Line the pizza maker with two liners (since the constant mixing may cause the paper to tear). Heat the pizza maker. 2. Add the oil, onion and garlic, and cook for 5 minutes. 3. Add the remaining vegetables, and cook for an additional 10 minutes. 4. Add the rest of the ingredients, and mix until the meat is crumbly. 5. Cook for 20 minutes, stirring every few minutes.
CHICKEN STIR FRY This dish is prepared in batches and is full of great flavor and texture. You can replace the broccoli with string beans.
INGREDIENTS ⅓ 2 1 2 ½ 2 1
cup sliced almonds chicken cutlets cup chopped onion cloves garlic, minced tsp. salt Pinch of white pepper T. oil tsp. soy sauce
RICE 1 cup basmati rice 2½ cups boiling water 2 T. oil 1½ tsp. salt 1 cup B’gan broccoli florets
DIRECTIONS 1. Heat the pizza maker, and line it with a parchment paper round. 2. Place the almonds in the lined pizza maker, and toast them for approximately 2 to 3 minutes. Pour them into a bowl and set aside. 3. Combine the chicken with the onion, garlic, salt, pepper, oil and soy sauce. Place this in the pizza maker, and cook it for 5 to 7 minutes or until the chicken begins to brown. Set aside. 4. Place all the rice ingredients in the pizza maker, and cook for 10 to 12 minutes, until the rice is soft. 5. Combine the rice mixture with the chicken. 6. Top the chicken with toasted almonds and serve.

Out the Window BY: MALK A NEWMANN
It was 8:12 p.m., which meant that it was a total of 87 minutes since I’d first entered my crib. To be fair, I wasn’t actually sitting in a crib. But there are crib rails extending along the full width of our very tiny nursery, and I was sitting crammed in a teninch space between my one- and two-and-a-half-year-old angels as they peacefully drifted — um, no. In truth, my head was literally vibrating on the window behind me as my monkeys jumped, bounced, sang, shouted, spun, asked and begged — anything but sleep. Ten minutes later, the crisis deepened. Now, here’s a trick question: What’s worse than two kids acting out at bedtime? One kid. Because when one sleeps while the other is up, the aforementioned child’s long-prayed-for sleep is in a

someone-send-me-a-coffee-now mommyhood experience, I don’t think I’ve ever been quite as scarred as I was at that moment, watching my suddenly pure and innocent child widen his big green eyes and whisper, “Mommy, is my bottle LOST now?” The horror on his little face was matched only by the sinking, sickening pit I felt deep down. Had I really gone nuts? One gaze out the window and down the four-story drop confirmed my suspicions. Yup, I had. I quickly blabbed some pathetic cover-up — “Oh yes, down there is where all the bottles live, and your bottle really, really needed his

Walk of Shame BY: DA SSI LE VI
It starts out as an innocent stroll to the grocery. With me are my two fifteenmonth-old toddlers, scrubbed, fresh and adorable, if I may say so myself, duly strapped into five-point harnesses. And then one little guy gets impatient. Wriggle, wriggle, mischievous giggle… hands are free! “Here’s a bottle,” I beg, as he continues to wriggle his waist out of the strap. “Drink!” He drinks. For five seconds. Then he hurls the bottle to the floor, and as I bend down to retrieve it, he deftly climbs onto the hood, and... bam! The stroller tips backward. Frightened wails. A bruised little cheek. Sand-covered shorts. A traumatized brother stuck in the harness. I lift my fallen son, hold him tight as I straighten the double

I finally strap my runaway rascal back into his seat. The howls start, so I put a snack bag into each one’s hand. They protest — loudly. Noooo, they don’t want flutes. Some more faces turn in my direction. They want... the crumbliest, gooiest things from my bag. Here you go. Whatever it takes to keep the peace. I stroll on, hot and uncomfortable, mud stains on my skirt and blood stains on my top, as my kids litter the sidewalks with Bamba and cookie crumbs. The carriage becomes a crumb receptacle, their faces are smeared, but I walk, walk, walk. Another five minutes... I think through a clenched brain. The whining starts again. I’m detecting a wriggle. Here, a bottle. “Juice!” But no, not what he had in

And there I am running and craning my neck, a disheveled mom holding a kicking, screaming, tantruming, dirty toddler in her arm, terrified for my son on the loose. I head to customer service, and there’s my son — redfaced and screaming, being held by the arms by a woman dressed to perfection shaking her head back and forth, her face disapproving. “You should not leave a kid this age out of sight for a millisecond,” she says through pursed lips. I nod, willing away the tears threatening to gather at the corner of my eyes. I look pathetic enough without red eyes! Beaten, with a whining kid in each arm whom I no longer even hear, I do the walk of shame back to the stroller. No, not the wagon. I need to get home — now. I hope there will be a taxi driver taking us in with all the dirt we come along with. And as I try to see who my shaliach from Heaven will be, a woman passes me, softness on her face and something in her eyes. “I know how impossible this is,” she says quietly. “Don’t let people make you feel bad when you’re doing so much good.” And she gestures to two sweet same-sized girls who seem to be way past the stage of so brutally stripping their mother of her entire ego. Now I can no longer stop the tears. I surreptitiously wipe my eyes and I know that I’ll get over it.

They’re jumping in tandem now, and one of my hands is on the handlebar, maneuvering this bulky, bouncing stroller, while the other hand is holding on to these dear boys (moms of twins learn a lot of tricks) so they don’t fall. Some passersby eye me strangely. Others get a kick out of it. I see the grocery store in sight. I make a run for it. I park my dirty stroller and bring my dirty, dripping kids and self into the grocery store. I shepherd them right up to one of those defective wagons that only moms of two tiny tots know about — the kind that have bars missing on either side and can accommodate four little legs. I turn around to grab the wagon. I turn back and, “Where did they go?!” Oh, there’s one, some twenty feet to my right. I scurry in that direction, but there’s squealing some thirty feet at my left and... I’m torn. Who to get first? I run through the millisecond calculation of which side is more danger-
Tales of a Tiny Tyrant BY: SIMA ROSEN
Being an only boy in a female-blessed family must be difficult. And being a very powerful, very bright, very adorable, very lovable, very reactive, very aggressive only boy? Difficult for the child, challenging for the mother.
With energy far surpassing his age, both mattresses are shoved onto the floor, and the bedding gets yanked off and messed up. My innards clench tighter and tighter, and feelings of inadequacy wash over me in a shameful wave. Am I raising a boundaryless monster? Am I so ill-equipped to do this parenting thing? I’ve got no fight left in me. I am so done. But Shloimy is not, and he hits and pinches and bites all in sight. I’m hovering in freefall, choking in helpless paralysis. What to do? Rescue my poor children from their brother’s wrath? Hide? Discipline my little tyrant? (Yeah, right!) I’m a defenseless ant scurrying out of the mighty giant’s reach, and my powerlessness is so frightening. I closet myself into the bathroom to get my bearings. Bad move. BrightEyed and BushyTailed BY: MIREL DISKIND
My son is four and a half years old, and his brother two and a half, when I am confined to a few weeks of bedrest. Day after day, all summer long, sheer helplessness is all I know. How to resolve a fight taking place downstairs? (You don’t.) How to take care of the house, the dust, the shopping? (You don’t, and don’t, and don’t.) How to attack the mountains of laundry growing at an alarming pace? (You teach your better half everything about casual and delicate, and order detergent pods.) My kids are passed around from aunt to aunt in the afternoons, and I sit home tight, hoping that, wherever they are, they aren’t running into the road, don’t have access to a pool. Early one bright sunny morning, the kids are in adventurous spirits. Still in pjs and teddy bear slippers, the two bushy-tailed little

people sneak down the stairs. To their mother, their muffled giggles sound more and more ominous with every passing moment. “Ari!” I call. “Moishy! Where are you going?” Some more giggles, and the quick pitter-patter of feet. “Come back!” I holler. “Hey, come back!” There is quiet, and then the quick snap of the screen door. Uh-oh. Heart beating fast in my chest, I sit up and grab the nearby cordless. I dial my husband, but there’s no answer. He’s probably davening Shacharis, I know. I try once, twice, again, just to be sure, but the call still goes to his voicemail.
By now the terror is rising to my chest. What to do? My maternal instincts are screaming for me to run, yell, do something! But I am so horribly, painfully stuck. From the window near my bed I hear snatches of very familiar giggles, but the sounds are growing ever fainter. I quickly lean over to look outside. And there they are! All the way… across the street. My aunt lives a few doors down on the other side of the street, and for some reason, the kids have decided it’s a great time to visit. They don’t even bother knocking in; they content themselves with prancing around on the driveway, like two colts enjoying the open outdoors. It’s early, too early, but what’s a mother to do? I dial my aunt’s house. Within a few minutes, the kids, tail between their legs, are led back across the street by my uncle, who shepherds them inside and firmly locks the door. Nearly weeping with relief, all I want to do is gather them into my arms, feel their hearts beating safely near mine. But I’m still stuck in my room, and the kids? They’re already off on their next great adventure.

Egging Each Other On BY: BAIL A EHRENFELD
I wait for the very last minute to dress my boys in their brand-new white suits, pristine and pressed in honor of my sister’s wedding. I pull every piece of clothing onto their energetic selves — no small feat — and settle them on the couch with some books while I run into my bedroom to get myself ready for the big night. I reemerge, dressed and sparkling in celebration of the longawaited simcha, ready to grab my children’s scrubbed hentelach and head out to the car. Then I stop. What I see makes me want to return to my room and lock the
door to block out this sight that simply cannot be true. My twosome have gotten hold of the case of eggs that was just delivered. Their hands are dripping with rivulets of golden egg yolks as they aim egg after egg at each other, squealing in impish delight.
Yellow splatters cover their hair, their white linen suits, their new Shabbos shoes. My furniture. My pale pink carpet. The fabric couch. Not an inch was spared the glory. I take in the sight in a daze. Faintly, I back away to spare my dress, and what happens next is a blur. Did I berate them? Stamp my feet and yell? Who was the one who came to babysit these two rambunctious boys who were soon bathed and sleeping in their pajamas while my husband and I attended the wedding? When did I get to scrub the house? Were the suits even salvageable? The absolute trauma of the moment has made me forget. But I will never remember the sight of the yellow splatters ruining my sparkling plans. And I never left a case of eggs out in the open again.

WEEK 1 OF A 4-WEEK SERIES
MANAGING THE OVERWHELM By: Gelly Asovski, LCSW-R, RPT-S
A 2018 study by Welch’s juice company found that mothers work two and a half times as much as is required in a typical full-time job. According to the study, the average mother works from 6:23 a.m. to 8:31 p.m., with under two hours of free time during the day. The statistics also showed that mothers work a fourteen-hour shift on a daily basis. It’s no wonder that mothers are overwhelmed! Mothers of little kids are really amazing. Taking care of our precious kinderlach is a labor of love that can leave us feeling very stressed and exhausted at times. Children literally rely on their mother for survival. Breakfast, lunch, supper and in between, it’s all on Mommy. Dressing the kids, bathing the kids, feeding the kids, playing with the kids... again, it’s all on Mommy. Mothers, with mesirus nefesh, are also the ones getting up for the baby in the middle of the night, and they are also responsible for keeping the house clean and washing the laundry, along with all the countless other tasks of running a household. 122

Overall, mothers are entrusted with the huge achrayus of attending to the physical and emotional needs of our children, as well as with their ruchnius. When the going gets tough, we can all use some chizuk to get through the day’s challenges and focus on what’s really important: our beautiful children. Nowadays, the work-life balance is more complex than ever before, and so
many mothers work out of the home. As a child and family therapist, I have dedicated my life to helping children and families heal with the best therapies available in a heimish setting. As a registered play therapy supervisor and EMDR consultant, my goal is always to help stressed out, struggling mothers go from overwhelmed to playful, connected parents because that makes everything so much better. When we’re overwhelmed, the first task is to stop the overwhelm! Then we can focus on ways to be the happy mothers we truly want to be. Sometimes the answer lies in working on our mindset as the mother, and rearranging our schedules to make life manageable. Sometimes it’s about remembering to do more self-care so we can give our children what they need without feeling resentful. I truly believe there is a way for mothers to feel good about raising our beautiful families.
WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH, WE CAN ALL USE SOME CHIZUK AND TO GET THROUGH THE DAY’S CHALLENGES AND FOCUS ON WHAT’S REALLY IMPORTANT: OUR BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN.
It’s important to know that taking small baby steps consistently to reduce overwhelm really works in the long run. Here are ten tips to cut down the overwhelm in your life and feel good about being a mommy:
1.
CREATE A SUPPORT SYSTEM. Surround yourself with people who care about you and what’s going on in your life. Your friends and family can be a lifeline when you’re raising young children. Don’t underestimate the value of finding a support system. Reach out to people who understand what you’re going through, who can laugh and cry with you as you do your best to raise your family.
2.
TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH.
Get help from a mentor or therapist, or take a parenting course. There’s no shame in taking care of your mental or emotional emotional health. If you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, postpartum issues or childhood trauma, help is available. The right help can make a huge difference in reducing your overwhelm as a mother.

SELF-CARE IS CRITICAL
to being a healthy, good mommy! My advice is to put aside ten minutes a day to do something nice for yourself that says, “I matter as a person.” Many mothers get stuck in thinking they never have their own time to do anything, and that thought overwhelms them further. Doing little things for yourself will help you have the koach to continue parenting with love and connection. Remember, ten plus ten plus ten will add up to give you the energy you need to be the amazing mother you want to be!
4.
JOURNALING DAILY
or several times a week really makes a difference and can help soothe jangled nerves at the end of the day. I personally have used journaling to help me cope through parenting challenges and have found it really helpful. Nowadays gratitude journals are in style — and I love it! My personal daily gratitude has always been thanking Hashem for washing machines because I can’t imagine what life would be like if I needed to schlep to the river to wash clothing.
5.
WALK DAILY.
Don’t treat exercise as an allor-nothing prospect. A brisk ten-minute walk around the corner works just fine, as long as it’s consistent. A little movement and some fresh air can make a world of a difference and reduce stress. You can take your

kids along if you can’t go alone, and then it will become an activity to enjoy together. Jumping jacks and dancing in the kitchen reduce stress and allow everyone to release energy instead of fighting with each other.
6.
DO ONE THING A DAY TO EXPRESS LOVE TO YOUR CHILDREN. A smile, a hug, a posi-
tive compliment… these really go a long way if done on a daily basis. Your child needs this love just as they need food and shelter. It’s a real mindset shift, and it makes a world of difference. Happier kids don’t act out as much, and that definitely reduces overwhelm!
7.
ACCESS THE POWER OF VISUALIZATION. So
many times, when we’re overwhelmed and at the end of our rope, we get stuck in worst-case scenarios in our heads. Our brains send us depressing messages that things will never change and that there is no hope. Visualization can help us tap into creating a new narrative — one that is hopeful. It shines the spotlight on seeing our precious children for who they really are, and doesn’t just focus on the challenges of raising them.
INSTRUCTIONS:
4. Send positive energy and love to both yourself and your children, from your heart to their hearts. 5. Believe that things will change for the better!
8.
SEEK CONNECTION WITH YOUR CHILDREN. Focus on what brings connection, not
disconnection, in your day-to-day interactions with your yummy kinderlach. If you see your children as the source of your problems, they will be your problems. Look for opportunities to connect with them through love, nurture and play. Work on finding the two-minute, five-minute and ten-minute opportunities where you can do something fun with your kids.
9. 10.
CHALLENGE YOURSELF IN ONE AREA OF PARENTING that is hard for you. Picking one
issue to work on takes out the overwhelm and gives you a clear path forward. Once you tackle one issue, you can work on another issue. PBS — PAUSE, BREATHE, SMILE. If you

have ten seconds, you can do this! It works wonders to help reframe a frazzled state of mind. The mommies who take my Playful Parenting course love this exercise and say it makes a big difference in those very stressful moments.
3. Visualize yourself as the proud mother of your children, and acknowledge your role in raising these

BY: CHAYA BLUSTEIN Before I had my first baby, my reaction to baby gear discussions went something like, “Aren’t these strollers all the same?” I couldn’t see any major differences between the brands of equipment I saw mothers around me sporting. But once it was me behind the handlebar of a stroller, boy did I know how every little feature could mean a completely new experience in taking care of a baby. When I was the one pushing a baby around all day, how well the wheels rolled mattered. That’s how I became slightly obsessed with baby equipment, to the point of asking other mothers at the babysitter’s door if I could try out their stroller because its movement appeared so smooth, and interrogating baby store employees for hours about every high chair function and stroller feature. Suddenly, there was a lot to explore.
Bugaboo Lynx WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: Bugaboo strollers are known for their durability and pushing ease, but many of them, like the Fox, are also very big and somewhat clumsy. With the introduction of the Lynx, Bugaboo solved that issue. The Lynx is narrower and lighter than many other full-size strollers, which makes it even easier to wheel and bump up steps. Best yet, it folds with the seat attached. Another plus is that the bassinet is sold separately, so if you want only the stroller piece, you’ll find cheaper packages available.
CON: Reclining the seat requires two hands. PRICE: Starting at: $899

WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: If you want lots of storage space and a stroller known for quality and strength, UPPAbaby Cruz is a fabulous choice. It’s easy to recline the seat, and it also comes with an adjustable leg rest. No matter the position of the seat, the stroller is easy to push and maneuver. This is a stroller built to last through constant wear and lots of use.
CON: This is a heavy stroller, which you feel every time you need to fold it or go up steps.
UPPAbaby Cruz PRICE: Starting at: $650
Mockingbird WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: When I met a friend in a baby store wheeling this stroller, I just had to ask her about it. She loves that her stroller wheels beautifully and has plenty of room in the seat to move around plus a huge storage basket. Many of its qualities, including the single-to-double feature, compare to the UPPAbaby Vista V2. But this is a full-size stroller with a difference: an affordable price tag. Check out its bottom line.
CON: Once folded, the stroller is bulky (bulkier than the Vista) and hard to fit into small spaces.
PRICE: Starting at: $395

Silver Cross Comet Eclipse WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: With its accompanying Baby Nest, a soft piece that attaches to your regular seat, this stroller is super comfortable for a newborn baby without requiring a separate bassinet piece. This stroller also boasts hardy wheels and easy pushing, which are important features in full-size strollers.
CON: The Silver Cross Comet Eclipse comes in one color only: black. It does have pretty rose-gold accents, though.
PRICE: Starting at: $849
Mima Xari WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: The Mima Xari definitely has a uniquely striking design. Its leatherette fabrics come in many colors and can be wiped clean instead of the usually required washing. One feature exclusive to this stroller is the bassinet piece that unzips out of the inside of the seat, so it’s easier than ever to switch between the seat and the bassinet. That’s pretty convenient when your baby is at the stage where he still sleeps best in a bassinet, but likes to look around when he’s awake.
CON: The zipped-in bassinet makes the seat less spacious, which may make a bigger toddler uncomfortable. PRICE: Starting at: $1,400

Cybex Eezy S Twist WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: It’s the only travel stroller I’ve seen that has both the parent-facing and the forward-facing options. When your baby’s still really tiny and you want to see him at all times, or if your baby just likes to see his mommy, this option is a useful feature. Another reason to choose Cybex strollers is their great customer service. I’ve heard from customers who got replacement pieces with no hassle from the company.
CON: This is a travel stroller, so the wheels are small. That makes it harder to push.
PRICE: Starting at: $189
WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: Well, every car-owner loves the Doona because what could be more convenient than having your car seat become your stroller? Even if you don’t own a car, many people find it useful to have a Doona around for use in taxis, trains and buses, and even on airplanes (if there are empty seats to rest it on.) People also love that it’s so tiny and doesn’t take up a lot of room in a store.
CON: The Doona is a car seat. It isn’t advised to leave babies in that position for longer than two hours, so the Doona is not convenient for long trips.

Joolz Aer WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: If you want a lightweight stroller but don’t feel like compromising on things like a reclining option and a roomy seat for your toddler, try the Joolz Aer. It’s a high-quality stroller that has a one-hand compact fold, is light and easy to maneuver, and it’s still strong enough that it won’t tip as soon as you attach a bag to the handlebar. When a full-size stroller isn’t an option for you, the Joolz gives you quality in a smaller version.
CON: The price tag is high for a travel stroller. PRICE: Starting at: $399
WHY I LOVE THIS STROLLER: When I first laid eyes on this stroller, my reaction was, “I didn’t know double strollers can look so good!” Looks aside, this double stroller is lighter than other doubles and folds easily, too. Wheeling a double usually means having a hard time getting through doorways, but even with two seats, this stroller is narrow enough to resolve that issue. It also comes with a bassinet option.
CON: The Valco Baby doesn’t come with air-filled tires, which makes it harder to push on uneven ground.

It comes with a head-and-body cushion that can safely fit babies weighing as little as four pounds. Users claim that the latch system is also very easy to install. CON: Although it’s small, the car seat is still heavy. PRICE: Starting at: $200
Diono Cambria 2 Booster WHY I LOVE THIS BOOSTER SEAT: Even bigger kids can fit easily into this wide seat that has extra leg support. It also has the option of converting to a backless booster seat with a belt. Anything 2-in-1 is bound to be more useful, especially booster seats that you may want to use for kids of different ages at different times. CON: This booster seat has no top latch. PRICE: Starting at: $99

MISASKIM SPARKS IN THE DARK
by becoming salon owners soon after completing our intensive hair and wig
New York - Misaskim is about to launch a 36-hour campaign to raise $1,500,00 for the aveilim, almanos and yesomim in the community.
course.
But… Almanos and yesomim? Misaskim? Misaskim is only about shiva, aren’t they? Long after the shiva signs, chairs, and covers have been removed, Project Yedid of Misaskim steadfastly remains at their sides. Throughout the year, Misaskim showers the almanos and yesomim with heartwarming sparks. Sparks of support, sparks of comfort, sparks of relief.
design@nichysilber.com
Not quite so.
School supplies. Yom Tov meals. Yom Tov packages. Chol Hamoed events. Camp packages. A simcha fund. An emergency fund. For the almanos and yesomim, each spark feels like a giant hug, making them feel embraced, cared for, and remembered. This is in addition to the services people are more familiar with; the shiva services (with warehouses in 10 neighborhoods), meisei mitzvah and more. These incredible services amount to an annual budget of four million dollars! At Misaskim, the responsibility is enormous, especially since they do not receive government funding. The budget is rising drastically as more families are unfortunately added to the list. The 36-hour campaign will be starting on Wednesday, February 23rd, and will be live until Thursday, February 24th, at midnight. There are 3,100 almanos and yesomim who anxiously await Project Yedid’s lifechanging services. Will you help Misaskim generate those sparks? They cannot do it without you. To be part of this vital mission, visit charidy. com/misaskim

דעת תורה פון גדולי וגאוני הדור ומנהיגי ישראל
Strapping baby snugly into a car seat before riding off may take a couple of moments, but they are moments you don’t want to miss! Time for Innovation 1930s: The World’s First Baby Seats Early car seats were initially intended to restrain children while the car was in motion — with no relation to safety! Parents wanted their kids to be at the right height to look out the window and to basically stay in one spot. The LATCH System The Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children system was developed to make it easier to install car seats. Nearly all cars made since 2002 are equipped for LATCH use.
Crash! Test Car seats must go through a crash test in order to meet federal safety standards. To conduct the test, the car seat is strapped to the center of a bench seat, and a frontal crash of 30 mph is simulated. The seat receives either a pass or a fail. The test is conducted twice — once when the seat is secured by a lap belt, and once when the LATCH system is used.

Along came some concerned parents, and… the world of car safety seats for kids took a drastic twist. Car seats for safety could be attributed to two different designers who came up with the idea at about the same time. Jean Helen Ames, a British mom, thought up the concept of a five-strap safety harness because she wanted to keep her son safe while driving. She filed a patent for what she named “the Jeenay car seat” (after herself!) in London in 1965. Around then, Denver businessman Leonard Rivkin designed an iron-framed booster seat with a similar harness system. His idea came about after his car was struck from behind and his child went flying from the back seat.
By: T. Gestetner
A Seat for Every Age The CDC recommends using car seats until a child is at least nine years old, following this scale:
0–2 years: Rear-facing car seat 2–5 years: Forward-facing car seat 5–9 years: Booster seat 9–12 years: As soon as the car’s seat belt fits a child
The Safest Spot The center of the middle or back row is considered safest for your toddler.
Time for a Car Seat Safety Check! The third week in September has officially been named “Child Passenger Safety Week.”
properly, they can sit without a booster seat. Until age twelve, children should sit in the back of the car only.
Did You Know?
It may not go bad the way a bottle of milk or box of cereal does, but you may have noticed an expiration date on your car seat. The plastic may wear down, replacement parts may become unavailable, and in general, the Safety Commission would like to see you replace your child’s baby seat by the time the expiration date nears — or six years after its date of manufacture.
Beware of Imitations! As part of a 2019 investigation into counterfeit baby products sold online, CNN purchased a Doona car seat stroller. It was marked with Doona’s original branding exactly. The only difference was the price. Sure enough, the seat failed to meet the basic U.S. safety standards and crashed into pieces on impact during the 30 mph crash test.
Installation 101 While many parents believe they’ve connected their baby’s seat properly, the stats show otherwise.
96%
of parents believe their car seats are installed properly, but…
59% of car seats are NOT installed properly. (NHTSA Report, 2016)
• Parents are half as likely to strap their children into appropriate driving gear when taking a ride in someone else’s car. • NYS offers education on how to properly connect car seats by certified child passenger safety technicians at fitting stations around the state. • The NYS fine for car seat violation is between $50 and $100 and up to three points. • More and more parents have been using car seats: 1999:
15%
2008:
80%
2013:
91%
• Tennessee was the first state to regulate the Child Restraint aka Car Seat Law, 1979. • The first federal law mandating that all cars be equipped with seat belts was passed in 1968.

— מי לה' אליDO WE HEAR THE CALL? DEAR נשים צדקניות, The weeks and months have passed yet are we daring to forget? Corona, Meron, Stolin, Surfside and more ר"ל. We’ve been hit so hard. Hashem Had shaken us to the core and we all felt the pain. At the time I was at a loss. How do I answer His call? My personal קבלותwere beautiful, but is that what He meant? Can’t I do something better, something greater, something significant to help end this long and painful ? גלותYet I’m only one individual. What could I do? So I moved on. Life goes on, doesn’t it?... And then I saw an ad. CHANGE POINT. “Calling women all over the world to join for change.” I’ve listened to a few sessions and I’m blown away. What information! What inspiration! This is a far cry from any of the other hotlines I listen to. This is our יסוד, the very foundation of !כלל ישראלThese heroic women are modern day מכבים- crying with all their might " "!מי לה' אליteaching those basics that were sadly never taught to me be-
fore. Come to think of it, wasn’t the יונים'סgoal just that? להשכיחם תורתךHow crucial for us all to join! Dear sisters, we’re all looking to improve. We gain so much from listening to so many topics including אמונה and שמירת הלשוןetc. Yet, as women, are we accomplishing much or avoiding the point? Are we aware just how כלל ישראל'סcontinuity is dependent on this?... I beg you! Please, please call 917-722-2700. Do it for yourself, for your life and for the future of עם ישראל. I’m no Rebbe, Dayan or Navi, but I’m certain: When Hashem Sees us unite, women across the globe from every community to strengthen קדושת ישראל, there won’t be a need for more wake-up calls. He’ll lovingly gather us back to Yerushalayim, בב"א. "!“בזכות נשים צדקניות עתידין להגאל Your Sister, Esty R.
