CustomSkinWorks by White Orchid are the facials of the future. Introduce your skin to a new era of pore decongestion, improved hydration, increased circulation, healed acne, and overall cosmetic enhancement. We do it with advanced LED light and ultrasound technology combined with skin-nourishing care treatment.
HOW DOES IT WORK? It’s like an exercise for your skin cells. The LED light triggers your skin to naturally heal, with blue light helping to improve acne and sunburns and red light stimulating collagen and reducing redness. Ultrasound waves improve healing and pore decongestion while our natural enzyme botanical gel acts as a gentle exfoliator to strengthen, soften, and smooth your skin.

Because children who learn differently have so much to add Because they’re bright, energetic, thoughtful — and often grades above in street smarts. All they really need is the right approach and support. Integrated as a parallel class within mainstream Yeshivos, Masmidim provides the framework for these boys to learn, grow, and thrive alongside the rest of the grade.

PLEASED WITH PASTA
(Re: Issue 131) As a mother of kids who subsist on pasta almost exclusively, I immensely enjoyed your past issue. I never paid pasta all that much heed, and this issue gave me a lot of food for thought and taught me that there’s a whole lot of science behind it. Thank you to the mother who validated my kids’ poor diet with the description of how her kids eat supper! The noodle soup information was delightful; in my home it has its own special place on the food pyramid. Mother of Six
PASTA THAT’S NOT PASTY
(Re: Pasta a la Vista, Issue 131) Thank you for your feature describing healthy pasta alternatives. I’m a huge spaghetti squash fan! I want to share a tip for those who are using brown rice pasta. When my husband was off wheat for a longer stretch of time, we made a lot of use of brown rice pasta, and we were able to recreate a lot of old favorites that tasted close enough to (but not quite like) the originals. However, since this pasta becomes quite pasty, I advise anyone using it to cook it for a shorter amount of time than regular pasta and to drain it immediately. Y.R.

(Re: Let Them Eat Cake, Issue 131) I always look out for The Boro Park View’s post-Pesach recipes before taking out my Bosch machine, and once again, you did not disappoint! The cake selection — basic and delicious — was just right for filling my freezer. I tried the coffee and marble cakes, and they were both great recipes. However, I found that I needed to bake them for about 20 minutes longer than the instructions called for, and I wanted to know if that makes sense. B.B.
design@nichysilber.com
LIBBY GOLDBERGER RESPONDS: Since different ovens may require different baking times, it makes sense that you’d need to bake a cake for a few minutes longer than suggested. However, I do not recommend overbaking cakes, as it will cause them to dry out. I prefer to remove a cake from the oven while it is still slightly moist, as it settles after baking. A toothpick that comes out even only somewhat clean from a cake usually indicates that the cake is ready.

(Re: In the Middle of a Midbar, Issue 130) I read your article about communities across the United States, and I was impressed by these pioneers and the hard work they put into building new Yiddish communities. However, after I gave it some thought, the idea left me a bit unsettled. Why are we encouraging Yiddish families to move away from thriving centers of Torah — with established mekomos Torah, yeshivas, schools, and Yidden all over — to live in some far-flung area with a handful of Yidden and so few amenities? Why are we encouraging young families to put themselves into a situation where they may compromise on kashrus due to limited availability, instead of staying within the vicinity of plenty of kosher stores with the most mehudar hechsherim? I am not sure people should be encouraged to seek to improve their material quality of life in exchange for compromised access to Yiddishe resources. PARSHAS KEDOSHIM Key to Greatness
The parsha begins with the famous command to Klal Yisroel: “Kedoshim tihyu — you shall be holy” (Vayikra 19:2). The pasuk that follows instructs us to us to fear our parents: “Ish imo v’aviv tira’u” (Vayikra 19:3). What is the connection between these two mitzvos? Why did the Torah place them immediately one after the other? TIMES WERE HARD. Life in Yerushalayim was primitive, and poverty was rampant. Alter Yabrov was less than ten years old when his father passed away. His mother struggled to put bread on the table — and soon found that she simply could not manage. With no other choice, she took her beloved son to the famous Diskin Orphanage in Givat Shaul. Alter was devastated. He struggled to acclimate to his new environment, to no success. He begged his mother to allow him to come home, but she simply could not see how she would manage to feed him. She did feel his pain, however, and went to the Rav of Yerushalayim, Rav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, zt”l, for advice. Rav Yosef Chaim, with his well-known lev tov, replied that he had an idea. “Perhaps he can come live with me,” he said. “I will care for him, and since I’m an alman now, he will be of help to me.” The widow agreed to the plan, and young Alter moved into the gadol hador’s home. Every day, when Alter arrived home from cheder, Rav Yosef Chaim would stop what he was doing, leaving his many important klal tasks and seforim for a bit so he could sit with Alter calmly and patiently. He would listen to all that had happened to Alter that day, and he sometimes repeated stories of what he had been busy with as Rav of the city. In those moments, Alter truly felt as if nothing in the world existed for Rav Yosef Chaim other than himself. Alter was an astute child, and he paid attention to the Rav’s
routine. He noticed that the Rav had no connection with any material needs and hardly ate or drank. In contrast, every single night, he was super-careful to sleep a full six hours. It seemed uncharacteristic, somewhat of a mismatch to the Rav’s existence. He also noticed that after reciting Krias Shema, the Rav would whisper a couple of words that he could not make out. Alter wondered what the Rav was saying. When Alter gathered his courage, he asked the Rav to explain. And this is the story Rav Yosef Chaim told: When I was a child of six, my father passed away. My mother remarried, and we moved to a new town. There were those who attempted to persuade me to attend the local public school where I would have the opportunity to advance my talents and invest in the area of mathematics. My special mother, however, wanted to protect me from these negative influences, and immediately after my bar mitzvah, sent me to learn in the yeshivah of Reb Chaim Tzvi Monheimer in my hometown of Vrbove (Verbo), Slovakia.
Alter truly felt as if nothing in the world existed for Rav Yosef Chaim other than himself.

Since I had no money to pay for lodging, when I arrived, I was shown an old apartment where I could sleep. Another few bachurim whose parents had no means to pay for better accommodations slept there as well. The only problem was that the apartment was very far from the yeshivah.

“You must sleep in a bed every night for no less than six hours.” Wanting to save myself the time trekking back and forth just to sleep, I decided to stay in the beis medrash. All week long, when night fell, I would put my head down on my shtender, and when the first mispallelim would arrive for Shacharis, I would wake up from my light snooze. Only on Shabbos did I return to the apartment and sleep in my bed. One day, about half a year after I arrived in yeshivah, my mother surprised me with a visit. She wanted to see how I was faring. I was thin and pale, worn and exhausted. When she saw how I looked, she was terribly dismayed. “Why are you so weak?!” she asked. Before I could respond, one of my friends interjected, “What else do you expect? He hasn’t lain down in a bed during the week ever since he arrived here!” My mother was shaken. In an authoritative voice, she instructed me. “You must sleep in a bed every night for no less than six hours.”
MAY 9TH
Rav Yosef Chaim turned to young Alter, “For this reason, I make sure to sleep in a regular fashion every single night. I must listen to my mother’s command! Since that day, every night before I go to sleep, I state that I am going to sleep now “l’shem mitzvas aseh d’Oraisa of kibbud av v’eim…” * * * * *

Pure kedushah is the uppermost level of ruchnius that a person could attain. The mitzvah of kibbud av v’eim is so great that it serves as a key for a person to achieve Torah, yiras Shamayim, and all other levels of avodas Hashem, until he reaches the ultimate point, the level of pure kedushah. By being careful to honor our parents to the utmost, we can reach our ultimate shleimus. *Alter Yabrov grew up to be a legendary rebbi in Yeshivas Eitz Chaim in Yerushalayim. He was a master mechanech who connected with his talmidim in a remarkable way. When the Divrei Yoel of Satmar visited Eretz Yisroel, he tested the boys in Rebbi Alter’s class. When the Rebbe left, he expressed his amazement at the kind of chinuch and hashpa’ah that Rebbi Alter had on his talmidim.

Being careful with the mitzvah of kibbud av v’eim showers a person with blessing. A father once went with his sons to Hagaon Rav Chaim Pinchas Scheinberg, zt”l, and asked him for a bracha for his children. The Rosh Yeshivah replied, “If they will always be careful with the mitzvah of kibbud av v’eim, they will be open to all brachos…”

A Very Different Lag Ba’omer This Year at Meron Lag Ba’omer will look very different this year at Meron in the wake of last year’s horrific tragedy, with entrance limited to ticket holders only and a single bonfire to be lit by the Boyaner Rebbe. Yeshiva World News reported that only buses and official shuttles will be allowed onto the mountain, with timed entries for ticket holders designed to keep the crowd to a manageable size. No food distributions or kiosks will be allowed at Meron, and tents will be prohibited near the kever of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Efforts continue at two sites at the bottom of Har Meron to create a pair of venues where traditional celebrations can take place, albeit under safer and more controlled circumstances. Israeli news site Kikar HaShabbat reported that Rabbi Yaakov Chaim Miller, who has long been a key figure in planning for Meron, is behind the initiative. The plan will allow for the traditional distribution of Chai Rotel as well as upsherins and dancing in relatively close proximity to the burial place of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai. Rabbi Miller said that the two sites will be open to every Jew, with conveniences and amenities including mehadrin food. Lag Ba’omer at Meron will conclude with a special service for the families of those who were niftar last year that will feature a siyum Mishnayos. “There were those who called not to hold an event, but we thought otherwise” said coordinator Tzvi Tessler. “There’s a large public for whom it’s important. At the same time, we wanted to satisfy everyone’s wishes.”
State Budget Allots Millions in Aid for Holocaust Survivors The State of New York, home to the country’s largest concentration of Holocaust survivors, will be providing $2.6 million in aid to those who suffered under the Nazi regime. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the allocation after meeting with a group of Holocaust survivors at the Boro Park Y last Wednesday, saying that the money would be administered by the New York State Office for the Aging. The funding will be used to provide the state’s 40,000 Holocaust survivors with greater access to health care services, which will be provided by organizations based in the local community. “Survivors of the Holocaust endured tragedy beyond the imaginations of the average person,” said Hochul. “We owe 72

them a lifetime of care, and with this funding we can ensure that they receive just that.” Hochul said that Holocaust survivors experience greater needs as they age as the traumas they suffered can have dire effects in their twilight years. The youngest survivors are currently in their seventies, and despite their declining numbers, the needs of the Holocaust survivor population, nearly 40% of whom are living in poverty in New York, grow even more significant, bearing a higher price tag. Holocaust survivors’ needs became even more pronounced during the pandemic, particularly for those who have limited access to technology. Hochul said that the state will do its part to honor the memories of those who are no longer here and to support survivors. These thoughts were echoed by Senator Simcha Felder who declared that it is the moral duty of decent people everywhere to care for Holocaust survivors who withstood “the most diabolical genocide in civilized history.” “As a representative of the largest population of Holocaust survivors in the nation, I consider it a profound honor and responsibility to ensure that those who suffered the worst atrocities live the rest of their lives with dignity and respect,” said Felder.
Eichenstein Legislation Provides Greater Opportunities Under CDPAP In a win for New Yorkers, legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein has been passed into law, broadening eligibility for the state’s Consumer Directed Personal Assistance Program, more commonly known as CDPAP. The CDPAP program is under the auspices of Medicaid and allows family members to become paid caregivers for a loved one. It was a game changer for the elderly and disabled, eliminating language and cultural barriers in addition to providing the comfort of being cared for by loved ones, instead of strangers. But restrictions put in place by the New York State Department of Health several years ago severely limited the number of “fiscal intermediaries” who could qualify for the program and provide care. Eichenstein’s legislation now rectifies that issue, repealing those previously enacted requirements and having the DOH offering CDPAP contracts to financial intermediaries that had served a minimum of 200 consumers in the five boroughs, or at least 50 consumers, as of March 30, 2020. “After years of CDPAP being under attack by the state, I am glad that we are able to finally reach this conclusion, which will ensure that our bubbies and zeidies can enjoy their golden years at home with their families,” Eichenstein told The Boro Park View.

CHAPTER 8 RECAP: Chaim Simcha and Izzy are stuck outside Morristown when Chaim Simcha’s car breaks down. With heavy snowfall expected, they decide to spend the night there rather than have Chaim Simcha’s wife drive out to get them. Later, Zach Ganz is about to fall asleep when his campaign manager calls him in alarm.
“W
HERE’S THE MONEY? ZACK’S LACK OF FISCAL TACT. Zachary Ganz, twice-mayor and rumored candidate in the upcoming Congressional elections, may not be the golden boy we’ve been led to believe. Allegations have arisen that he’s defrauded donors, accepted bribes and sponsored legislation that left entire districts without a leg to stand on…” Zach listened quietly as Marty read off a litany of accusations that painted him in the worst possible light. If half of the allegations had been true, he was a white-collar felon, enabling criminals, lining his own pockets and destroying the city as he went. He yawned. “Come on, Marty! We’ve seen attackads before. What are you running into a panic for? Someone figured out I’m run-
ning for Congress and wants to knock me out of the running before I get started. It’s nothing!” “Nothing? Attack ad?” Marty was so upset he was barely coherent. “THAT’S TOMORROW’S HEADLINE IN THE TIMES! Written by your ‘buddy,’ Rick Moncharch!” “What?!” Zach couldn’t believe it. “That makes no sense! Rick wouldn’t print this kind of nonsense!” “Is it nonsense?” Marty demanded. “Because they’re citing some very specific details, Zach. It’s the kind of smoke that means fire. Now, I don’t know what exactly you did, but if we’re gonna contain this, you’d better tell me all about it right now. I can’t help you if I don’t know what really happened.” Zach ran a hand through his perfectly-coiffed gray hair. “It’s all nonsense, Marty! I’m clean, you know that.” He squeezed his eyes shut. He’d been tired
before, but now he was exhausted. “How’d you get this piece of schmutz anyway?” “George Hammond runs the night staff at the Times,” Marty answered him. “He thought we oughta be warned.” “Nice of him,” Zach grunted. He suddenly realized he was standing, his hand clenching his phone for dear life, knuckles stark white. He forced himself to breathe deeply and dropped back onto his bed. “I’m surprised nobody called me for a reaction.” “Yeah, that’s what worries me the most. Someone obviously wanted to drop this bomb and catch us unaware. It’s too planned, too sudden.” “I just can’t understand how Rick Moncharch could do this to me.” Though he ought to have known better by now, Zach was genuinely hurt. This was real betrayal. “We’ve known each other for years!” “Yeah, well, Rick’s job is telling the news,” Marty reminded him. “Someone gave this to him. What’s he supposed to do? Sit on it until some other paper gets ahold of it? That won’t do you any good, but it might cost him his job. Come to think of it, he was probably the one who put George up to calling me. He did what he could for us, giving us that warning. For what it’s worth,” he added bitterly. “What did you do, anyway? You know I’m gonna find out sooner or later.” “Nothing!” Zach snarled. First Rick, now Marty? Would none of his friends stand by him? That wasn’t fair, of course. Just by calling, Marty had proved he was still loyal. He just didn’t trust Zach, at least not enough to believe he was innocent. Zach shook his head to clear it. “You said the paper cites details?” “Listen: ‘Two years ago, a donation of $46,000 was handed to Mr. Ganz. The money was to be delivered to Fund the Force, an organization dedicated to providing better training and equipment to police and state troopers. That’s just not how it’s done!” “Well, it is this time. I’m going to lie low, keep my mouth shut, and let the law do its job.” “It’s an admission of guilt to even talk like that,” Marty warned. “So be it. I gotta be me — that’s who they voted for, remember? But you know what kills me about all this?” Zach stared bitterly out the window at the snow piled on his sill. “This has to be someone in our circle. This guy knows me too well to be an outsider.” “Well, you’d better make a list, then,” Marty advised, his tone flat and fatalistic. “Which of your friends is secretly your enemy?” “No one. I don’t play those kinds of games.” “Which of your close acquaintances, then? Who knows you really well, but might quietly hate your guts?” The truth was, that could be anyone. There were tens, maybe hundreds of people who would like to see Zach Ganz tossed off a bridge. Backstabbing wasn’t exactly rare in the world of politics. But again, it had to be someone close to Zach, someone he’d known for years. Was there someone he’d hurt recently? Someone who’s life had been ruined, and Zach was somehow responsible? He ground his teeth together so
hard his jaw began to hurt. None of this made any sense! “Read it to me again,” he said, rubbing his eyes tiredly. “The article. Read it to me.” “Two years ago,’” Marty repeated, “’a donation of $46,000 was handed to Mr. Ganz. The money was to be delivered to Fund the Force, an organization dedicated…” Zach listened, his brain already mush, straining to hear anything, any clue that might help them. But there was nothing. The allegations were just the right mix of truth and lies. Nothing about it gave a clue to the article’s origin. “Rather than passing the check along as promised, insiders close to Mr. Ganz claim that the former mayor deposited the check…” I can’t believe I did that, he berated himself, over and over. He’d been so eager to get them the money, so eager to earn their goodwill, that he’d broken a basic rule of politics: Document everything. Now he was going to pay for it. “‘I actually saw Zachary deposit the check,’ our source alleges. ‘I would never have believed it…’” “Wait a minute,” Zach demanded, frowning. “What was that?” “He said he saw you deposit the check. Do you remember who was with you?” Zach waved the question away, knowing Marty couldn’t see the gesture. “No, no. Nobody was with me. That’s a lie. Read me the exact quote.” “I actually saw Zachary deposit the check, a close friend of —” “It says Zachary? Not Zach?” “Yeah,” Marty replied in a confused voice. “Does it matter?” “Nobody calls me Zachary,” Zach breathed, desperately trying to control his anger. “Except Brian Cranston…” TO BE CONTINUED...

CHAPTER FIFTY-SIX RECAP: Osher’s
parents receive the results of his evaluation. It seems that Osher’s ADHD is not so severe, but the reason he is experiencing so many difficulties is because he developed “secondary problems” as a result of his low self-esteem and ADHD. Yigal Erenbaum is bitter about these results.
E
lazar Reiness walked along the side of the road. When he reached the edge of the sandy lot, he raised his eyes. In his mind’s eye, he saw the stables on the verge of collapsing, the neglect that was evident along the fences, and the work hut that his father had described. There was nothing left of it all; only a small structure, built more recently, stood in the middle of the lot, and it gave the impression of being abandoned. There were also a few rotting remnants of the wooden fence at the far end. And that was it. At that time, his father had wanted to help, but the 70-year barrier had prevented him from realizing that dream. Elazar, his only son, born after many long years, had been the only one he had told about the lot and what was behind it. Little Elazar grew up with the stories of the stable that, in time, would be cleared for a shul that would be filled with tefillos. When Elazar was an adult, his father had asked him, with tears in his eyes, to take the job upon himself. When the 70 years were up, his father said, he would no longer be in This World, like Mr. Shikovitzer, who had parted from This World with his dreams unfulfilled. The dream was now nearly at hand; in two and a half months, the 70 years would be up. “There’s a fifty-fifty chance of success,” the lawyer had concluded. “If it were dependent only on your efforts,” he added with a smile, “I would guarantee you two hundred percent that it would succeed. I’ve never seen a person expend

so much effort for something. But you know, things don’t only go according to our efforts…” And Elazar was doing whatever he could. Sarah had easily agreed to make the unusual move to Acco for a limited amount of time, and for his boys, it had been a very good thing. Sometimes he mused that he needed to thank those Arabs who had insisted on the 70 years, because if not for them, he would not have established his yeshivah here, and what would have been with his boys? Elazar walked back to the carpentry shop, his thoughts buoyant. Then he remembered Osher. It was strange that his parents had not made any contact with him, despite the evaluation results they’d received by fax four days earlier. They hadn’t said anything to him at all! Without calling or asking any questions, they had simply deposited money into Mattisyahu Kreisman’s account — 5,000 shekels — and written in the memo space “for Osher’s treatment.”
Why He? Why had Matari picked on him this morning?
***** “It’s just a simple beehive cubby, Osher. There’s no reason you shouldn’t be able to build it.” Matari pointed to the cutting table. “Everything is ready and marked with the right measurements. Here’s the design printout, including the colors and everything. It’s not complicated. If you finish this in the next hour, before I go, I’ll show you how we put the back plank on, too.” Osher glared at the precisely cut shelves that were waiting for him. Why he? Why had Matari picked on him this morning? “I’ll be happy to etch designs into the wood,” he said with a shrug. “But someone else should do the building.” “Which designs? This is not a retro style cabinet; it’s a classic cubbyhole, with clean lines. No designs and no etching.” “What can I do if that’s what I’m good at?” “So the time has come for you to be good at other things, too. C’mon, let’s go.” Osher scowled at the screwdriver and sighed. “Fine,” he muttered. “But if it flops, it’s not my fault.” “It will absolutely be your fault,” Matari retorted coldly. “So please be careful.” “I’m being careful. But what if it doesn’t work out and the boards get ruined?” “First mistake is on the house. The second mistake you’ll need to pay for.” “How?” Matari looked at him. “I’ll tell Rabbi Reiness to deduct two slices of bread from supper, okay? Now get started already!” Seething, Osher picked up the box of screws. He placed one shelf against a support plank and took the screwdriver. “Wait, before you start,” said Matari, who was stand-

ing behind him with his arms folded, “if you attach that shelf to that board, which is the roof of the cubbies as you see in the sketch, the shelves will be standing. Upward. Get what I mean?” “No,” Osher grumbled. “Here, look, it’s very clear. It stands like this, and this will be attached to it. So the shelf will be standing! How will you put books, toys and other stuff onto the shelves, then?” “I’m not putting books and toys and other stuff there,” he muttered. “So where should I connect it?” “Connect the shelf to the side board. You connect the long shelves — there are three of them — and then, like you see in the printout —” “I don’t see anything in the printout!” Osher slammed down the screwdriver, and the little screw that had been attached to it flew onto the sawdust-covered floor. “This sketch is Japanese to me. I don’t see anything, and I don’t understand anything. So just leave me alone!” And he dashed out of the carpentry shop. The others raised their eyes from what they were doing, and Rabbi
Reiness, who stood at the entrance of the shiur room talking on the phone, managed to catch a glimpse of Osher’s retreating back as he exited into the front yard. “One minute,” he said in alarm to
“I see,” the Rav murmured. He wondered if he should follow Osher out. He looked at the door again, and his eyes met the gaze of Doron Nachman. “Should I go out to him, Rabbi?” the student-security guard mouthed. Rabbi Reiness thought for a moment. “Not right now,” he mouthed back. “But thanks.”
“This sketch is Japanese to me. I don’t see anything, and I don’t understand anything. So just leave me alone!”

the lawyer who was on the phone. “I have to hang up. You’ll call me the minute you know that they got the message about the meeting, right? Okay, great, thanks.” And he stuck his phone into his pocket and strode into the carpentry shop. “What’s doing?” he asked Matari quietly. “I tried to convince him to build it, like you asked,” the carpenter said in an equally low tone. “It’s a very simple job, really, which could generate a lot of satisfaction. It’s the type of thing where you see the results very quickly.” “But?” “But it didn’t work.”
Osher
Suddenly, I really wanted to call someone. It didn’t even matter whom, as long as they were not connected to this place. Not to the carpentry shop, to Matari, to the other boys, or to Rabbi Reiness. I would have called home to speak to to Tatty or Mommy. Honestly, I sometimes missed being home. But I didn’t think that anyone there had the patience for me, their black sheep. At this point, even Rabb Reiness had probably lost his patience with me. He was standing a bit farther away when Matari was arguing with me about that ridiculous beehive cubby thing, and I saw anger in his eyes. Maybe not anger, exactly, but this strange expression, as if he didn’t know me or understand me.
What did I think — that he would understand me? There probably wasn’t anyone in the world who could understand me. Other than Ariella, maybe. Maybe calling Ariella would be a good idea. I wondered how she was and what she was doing right then. Who knew? Maybe she was missing me a bit, too. But how could I talk if I didn’t want to ask the Rav for his phone, or go upstairs? Doron Nachman was probably upstairs, and I had no interest in talking to him, either. In some ways, it was better when Shlomo roomed with me. We didn’t always
ask me what exactly we were learning, and if I could teach him a little bit, because he missed those days of being religious… And I had no patience or interest. “Torah? So what’s with the carpentry shop?” “That’s besides for the Torah learning.” I walked away. But he was following me! “Why did he open a carpentry shop here? Is it worth having such a business in Acco?” I was silent as I kept walking. “This is what he came to Acco for? To open a school with a carpentry

This student-security guard was always trying to do just that, and it was beginning to grate on my nerves. He was okay, overall, a nice guy, but sometimes he tried too hard, like he wanted to be my counselor or something. “Hey, good morning!” someone suddenly exclaimed from behind me. I looked around and saw Rabbi Reiness’s childhood friend, Yosef. I sighed aloud; I didn’t have patience for him and his questions. “If you have any more questions,” I said before he even had a chance to ask, “then maybe go inside and ask your friend yourself.” “Questions? What kind of questions?” “I dunno. About him and what’s going on today.” “Why should I be interested in what’s going on today?” Yosef chuckled. “I see he’s become a teacher, huh?” “Yes.” “What do you learn?” “Torah,” I replied, and turned my back. There he went, with his questions. And soon he would also start to
shop?” “I guess he wanted to be here.” I stopped and turned my head. “It’s really a shame.” “What’s a shame? Don’t you like it here? Aren’t you happy?” I glared at him. “No, I’m not always happy. But what can I do — I’m the type of person who isn’t always happy. At least he tries hard to keep me happy, because he’s a good person.” I stopped. “Okay, is that it? Can I go now?” “Sure, sure. What, did I tie you down or something? Anyway, I know that Elazar is a good person. He was always a good boy. I’m sure he does lots of great things for you, meals, trips…” “Trips? Maybe some, but not much.” “I saw you going into the car with him once. I wanted to tell him something, but I was standing too far away and you were already driving off.” I turned around and kept walking. Why was he so nosy? “So where did he take you?” And he was still at it! What did he want from my trips to Zichron Yaa-

kov? Why was it his business? I did not want it to get out, especially since I understood from Rabbi Reiness that although the evaluation was over, maybe I would keep going to Dr. Kreisman for sessions to help me discern my strong points. “So where did you and Elazar go?” Uch! “To Zichron Yaakov.” “He takes you there often, doesn’t he?” I gritted my teeth and didn’t answer. “Will he continue taking you there?” I didn’t answer, just turned my head and continued walking on the boardwalk. The boardwalk was a quiet place, paved with light-colored stones. Every few feet, the stones formed mosaic-style images of different kinds of fish, and I concentrated on skipping from one to the other. The sunshine on my back was pleasant, and I decided that this would be a little outing, just myself and the sun. I was sick of being with people who didn’t understand me and whom I didn’t understand. You know, I realized, I like my own company better than other people’s. I looked back. Thankfully, Yosef wasn’t there anymore. Across the street was an Arab restaurant. I didn’t know how to read the Arabic letters, but the sign also stated in Hebrew that it was “The West-Coast Restaurant, Mubrasham.” Wait, was that Yosef over there? What was he doing in such a place? Actually, as sad as it was to think about it, the guy probably didn’t even keep kosher anymore. Or maybe he’d just dropped in to the restaurant to ask what time it was or to buy cigarettes? Whatever. I had no interest in this person, and I wasn’t going to nose around in his affairs like he was doing in mine. I turned around and kept walking. To be continued…

It’s on our minds every minute of our frenetic lives. The deciding factor behind decisions large and small, the card that trumps all. The intent behind child care and self-care and all we do to keep our myriad balls in the air. Because we know that
our love for our children fills their ever-expanding worlds, It’s the fuel that powers their motors is the oxygen that
the air they need to breathe and be.
as they traverse the world with wide eyes and little limbs, and the tonic they drink from to go forth and
BECOME THEIR VERY BEST SELVES. But what if we could personalize our love even more?
What if we could fashion what we pour into our dearest treasures to custom-fit these eager receptacles? What if we could up the power in this rush that embraces them forever, so they know with certainty: “I am adored, I am precious, I am cared about in the deepest way”? We’d be turning a tonic into a life-giving elixir. We’d be speaking our kids’ love language.

The Boro Park View
Love Languages: Different Strokes I love lattes and you love your teas. You love powerhousing and I love to relax. And, as with every other detail in which we differ, we all like to be loved in a different way. What can feel like a brush of air to one is a bear hug to another. What says “I love you” to one can scream “I love you to the moon and back!” to another. Counselor Gary Chapman and psychiatrist Ross Campbell studied and coauthored the book The Five Love Languages of Children, a comprehensive look at how children — just as adults — differ in the kinds of love that speaks to them.
Different kids crave different kinds of love, and understanding the love languages is the gift of showing a child how truly treasured he is by loving him in a way that touches him deeply. Think of it as a password to get through to them effectively. We already love our kids — oh, how we love them! And though each child needs all five languages of love, knowing what speaks to them most — and utilizing it — communicates this love in the way they understand best. Use their preferred language to strengthen your bond with them and make them feel loved, cherished and prioritized.
And How It Talks! The first priority for a child is to feel loved, safe and accepted by a parent. Being loved loud and clear is what builds them, gives them confidence and reassures them that they are indeed lovable. This connection forms a safety net for kids to become resilient. It allows them to try new and difficult things without fear of failure. The dividends of knowing and speaking your child’s love language are enormous when it comes to strengthening your bond and warding off misbehavior (yippee!) because acting out is just a cry to be seen. Don’t we all know this? “Children who need the most love will ask for it in the most unlov-
ing ways.” Love-languaging (excuse the new verb) can help you beat them at their own game. You’ll find more connection, less anger and less defiance. More of that “sweet and safe” you want your relationship to be, and less struggle. Of course, any mommy worth her salt will tell you that since we’re not raising china dolls but complex little humans, some misbehavior and kookiness are par for the course! But since we also don’t feel robotically, and don’t dispense love solely for the purpose of preventing any misdemeanors, we’re good!
So, What’s My Child’s Love Language? Ah, if there were a question worth a million words! Kids under the age of three are generally still in the physical touch category — they’re still really babies, even though they feel so very grown up. But as children mature, they begin to develop their preferences. The first step in identifying your child’s primary love language is to watch and wait to see how they show love to others. We all tend to show love in the way we want to receive it — until we learn about the five languages of love, of course, and see
124

that we need to listen to the other person and love them the way they like to be loved. But our little ones don’t know that yet, and they are still on the factory default setting of showing love their way. This is what they like, so this is what they give! It’s what they understand. So let’s start ourselves on the sweetest journey ever. Child by child, it is so endearing to think about what they do to show how much you mean to them. Check how they show affection to others, as well, and pay close attention to what they ask for.

A mushy teddy bear who wants only to be held and cuddled and invited to come sit in your lap and be hugged some more — is this your child? Offer hugs when they’re upset, squeeze their hands, and give them plenty of good-morning and good-night hugs.

Quality Time Is your child constantly saying, “Watch this!” or “Lemme show you something!” or begging you to play with him? Does he like nothing more than having your complete attention? Two words: quality time. This kid is going to thrive on focused attention — ten minutes a day will mean the world to him. Engage with this child by joining him in whatever he likes to do, like playing a game of cards or baking, and reserving any small activity for just the two of you. Gift this child with your presence by just sitting next to him while he’s reading or doing homework. Talk to him as he drifts off to sleep. And don’t isolate this kid with a time-out for discipline — it’s a real killer for quality-time kiddos!

Gifts
128
Does your kid make a shebang of gift-receiving, taking his time unwrapping your gifts and then treasuring them way more than you’d thought he would? This child is the type who remembers gifts eons after he’s received them. He’s not necessarily hungry for more, but feels so loved with every little prize you give him. Bingo. You’ve got yourself a gift-getting type! Dr. Chapman says that people whose primary love language is gifts will value the packaging as well as the actual gift, and they’ll remember every detail of the whole setup for years and years. They also have trouble throwing out gifts they’re received over the years, no matter how much you try to convince them that it’s old, dirty, missing parts, and hey, they don’t even use it! No need to go on a gifting-spree every other day — to the relief of your purse. It’s not so much the things your child needs as much as the intent behind it. When you buy a larger gift for this child, make it something that’ll last so he’ll remember your love every time he uses it; choose something like art supplies. But gifting him doesn’t always have to mean a large purchase. A gift can be a meaningful note, an “I love you” on a napkin in his lunchbox, a flower on his pillowcase, a piece of mail in the mailbox; he’ll also feel tremendously valued when you make him charts and prepare stickers for it. And, equally important, be sure to value the gifts this child gives you, no matter how kitschy they may be.
Acts of Service No, your kid is not balking at independence and looking to just mooch off you; he may be craving love in acts-of-service language. This is the one who wants you to do things for him that he can very well do himself. He’ll beg you for help in fixing a toy or making his bed, and often says things like, “You do it for me,” or “Can’t you do it?” This language of love can get tangly, because you may end up feeling like a servant to the kid whose primary language it is. But when you can do something for them purely as an act of love, they feel it. You don’t have to jump at their every request and hamper their progress in becoming self-reliant, but occasional acts of service really fill their cup. You can love this kid by occasionally helping him with tasks he knows how to do on his own, such as helping him tie his shoes, hanging his towel, warming his blanket in the dryer on a cold day, or preparing his drink. Little things like those go such a long way in showing this child how much you adore him.

קומט א
יא
ח
Do kids’ love languages change? They just might! As kids get older and further develop their personalities, their preferences may go along for the ride. It’s all about watching them love and reflecting that back to them. Can a child have two love languages? Yes. Most of us have a primary love language, but there may just be a strong secondary one. Keep on observing your child. Whatever comes up most is what they want most, and you may just find a close second! Does expressing a child’s primary love language cover all? No, we all need love in all of its forms. My primary language may be words of affirmation, but don’t cheat me out of gifts! Kids need all five love languages, with intentional focus on their first choice.

oddlerhood is the manifestation of miracles. It’s the wonder of dawning comprehension, the triumph of milestones met. The delight in hearing a string of garbled words, and the absolute pricelessness of a sticky kiss on the cheek. A toddler in the home means moments of sheer joy so tremendous it fills the heart with skyscrapers of love. Is it any wonder it’s such fun to make those days even brighter? Here are some toddlerhood picks for your pint-sized source of sunshine.

These come in a variety of designs, but the idea is the same. Have you ever seen a kid hanging over a sink to reach the stream of water? This handy faucet extender brings the water right up to where little hands can reach.
They’re the bane of every mother’s and preschool teacher’s existence, those sorry shoelaces that are always either open and inviting their little owners to trip right over them, or jumbled into an impossible knot. Here’s an ingenious solution: Replace any pair of shoelaces with these no-tie Lock Laces (they come in a huge variety of colors), and you’ll see the end of the tunnel — even before the kid’s next pair of shoes.
Sometimes we need more than No More Tears shampoo to guarantee that there’s indeed be no more tears. For kids who hate to lie down in the bath to get their hair rinsed — but also scream when water is poured over their head — buy this Lil Rinser by Splash Guard. This fits securely above the forehead and over the ears to ensure that all of the water poured will be directed away from the face.
For kids who love to romp in the bathtub, this Skip Hop Bath Spout Cover is great at protecting their head from hitting the faucet. Make sure it will fit your faucet prior to purchase.

Playing with water is always exciting. Add the pipe concept by Boon, and bathtime will be a blast! These pipes suction-cup to the wall.
This is a personal favorite. When your child reaches that age where highchair or stroller buckles begin to fascinate them, this plush Boomer Square is a winner of a purchase. For younger kids, be ready to undo the buckles when they’re done so they can play again.
This Montessori toy makes a nice change from color sorting toys or traditional peg puzzles. Here the carrots need to be sorted by size instead.

We’ve all seen booster seats, but there’s a reason this Hiccapop OmniBoost Travel Booster Seat has parents so happy. For one, it folds up, so it’s a great on-the-go solution. It also has extra-sturdy suction-cup feet and a seat that is completely machine-washable. Best yet, its manufacturers are so confident with their product that they offer a lifetime warranty. You can’t beat that!
This KABOOST Booster Seat is a winner for kids who insist on sitting on a regular chair, and are old enough to no longer be at risk of falling off one, but do still need a boost to reach the table comfortably. This can fit most chair types, and the four corners fold downward for a compact storage or transport solution.

Granted, this isn’t for children who’ll open their seatbelts before the GPS announces you’ve reached your destination, but for those who are old enough to sit tight while traveling, this Bucklebee Easy Car Seat Buckle Release Aid will make getting out of the car a whole lot simpler.
This comes in many versions, shapes and colors and is only for homes that can accommodate yet another piece of furniture, but it’s a great thing to have handy so little people can peep over the edge of the counter to see what’s happening.
If you’re a parent who jumps with alarm at the sound of slamming doors, get a set of these door pinch guards. They’ll keep tiny fingers safe as well as the noise level down.

Living 120 CBD (short for cannabidiol) has recently undergone a rebirth. CBD is one of the most important of the 120 natural chemicals unique to the Cannabis plant.
Use Code: Bpview10 for 10% off your entire order.
Indeed, research on CBD is only just now starting to unveil the potential medical benefits as a genuine natural medicine. Derived from an ancient remedy, CBD is currently being integrated into the modern pharmacy as both an effective and safe anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, and anti-seizure medicine. Additionally, research has shown that side effects of CBD are usually only mild, if any. CBD is proving itself to be safer than aspirin and, in certain doses, is a more effective anti-inflammatory than steroids. CBD, derived from cannabis, has been part of the Jewish pharmacopoeia for centuries. For example, the Rambam prescribed cannabis oil for many upper respiratory ailments amongst others, as he was well versed in Torah Law which permitted cannabis growth in Israel’s farms. Modern science is now catching up with the Rambam and Kosher CBD is answering the call for safe, non-sedating, kosher formulations of CBD that include the full spectrum of 120+ cannabinoids. Ask an open-minded doctor if CBD is right for you. Rabbi Dr Yosef Glassman, MD

Bucketfuls of Love B Y: E S T H E R M . N E I M A N
Sometimes emotions ride the highway. They’re straightforward, hit no lights, and know exactly in which lane they belong. But sometimes they cross into lanes heading in the other direction by mistake, and that’s when I remember that I’m no clutch car; I’m human, blessedly so, with a heart that can feel in as many colors and shapes as my brain can think.
T
hat’s what it’s like when I watch my little boy, his toothy smile beaming sunshine and his wonderfully different hair standing straight up on his head. You see, my son is named for my zeidy, and there’s no question he inherited all of his best qualities. It’s rare you see a child who melts hearts so easily, loves people so rapturously, and delivers the very tightest hugs when he should rightfully be toddling off to explore the next very best thing. But my zeidy. I never thought I’d name this child for my zeidy. We miss him so, our zeidy who loved his children so joyfully, you’d think you were the only grandchild he had. His eyes would squint small when he smiled, his heart extending to every toddler, awkward teen, and gap-toothed child who each felt they were his very favorite. And the thing was, they were each his favorite, and they all knew it with conviction. His peyos wound tightly around his ears, he’d bustle around the kitchen offering lollipops, rugelach and bucketfuls of love to all who found themselves served the very best. As for Zeidy himself? He needed nothing at all, only some cheeks to pinch and babies to kvell over. Now my little boy has that joy and love spilling out of him, and he showers us with all the glitter and sequins and feathers his heart can contain. Is it in the name? Most definitely. All of his cousins who share his name share his sunny personality, too, and indeed, those who know these affectionate
little boys consider themselves blessed. Sometimes we sit two of these darlings side by side and call them by their name. When we do, and see their beautiful little faces turn to look up as one, the next exclamation is inevitably, “Look at them! Zeidy would love them!” It hurts so badly. How can he not be here to reap all this nachas? How we wish he would’ve known these delightful little beings carrying his name! He would have loved their smiles, their wonder, their antics and joy. Then the next thought hits. Would they be this wonderful, this joyous, had they been named Ari, Yanky, Dovid? They’d be cherished and beloved, to be sure, but… who would those strangers be? It’s an unsettling thought, and I try not to think about it because it puts my heart on the hamster wheel. Would I rather have named my child a different name, if only we could still have our zeidy here? Most definitely. But the joy… Oh, the joy! And that’s when I remember that there’s Someone pulling the strings. It’s not for my very human heart to work out. I separate the loss from the bracha, the pain from the joy. Yes, we lost our most beloved zeidy, and we miss him more than words can say. At the same time, the family has been granted multiple gifts, darling children who won’t know their zeidy, but will know his legacy. And that’s when I can acknowledge that if this loss was indeed destined to be, then I’m so very grateful that my son carries both the name and the chance to spread the light.

The Day Shaindy Turned Over By: Riki Goldstein
to share the news, and my mother gave an appropriately excited “Well done!” Then we all moved on. Feeling virtuous that supper was basically ready, I put Shaindy in her Doona and went out with the kids. I parked her next to the little knot of neighbors on the sidewalk and pushed my son on his scooter up and down the block. When I got back, someone happened to ask me how old the baby was. I guess Shaindy was usually sleeping inside the house at that time and didn’t join the clan outside much. “She’s just past three months,” I said. “Cute age. They still sleep enough so you can get things done, and they’re so cute,” said Miriam, a warm, homey mother somewhat older than myself. “Yeah. She just rolled over today.” “Oh, great. Isn’t it a good feeling when they do what they’re supposed to do?” Her words penetrated. I hadn’t really been thinking like that. I had rejoiced with Shaindy’s first smile because it meant she could communicate and we could share happiness together, but I had barely thought at all about her rolling over. She’d done it right on time, after a couple of tries, and I had taken it for granted. I stroked Shaindy’s soft cheek and silently sent up a thank You for Miriam’s perspective. Children on bikes and scooters wove around us as Mir-
I have no recollection of the day my oldest started to walk, or when she said her first word. I do not know when my son’s first tooth appeared, at what age he crawled, or first stood up, and I know when we got shoes for my daughter only because we were living in Eretz Yisroel and waited for our trip to New York. Developmental milestones are cute and wonderful at the time, but they’re not the kind of details that stick in my memory. Nevertheless, I hope I’ll never forget the day my Shaindy rolled over. It was summer, and I’d put my princess on her play mat next to me while I worked. There were no arches of toys left on the play mat — she’s not my first, nor my second — so Shaindy was looking all around her and talking to the lights and the ceiling moldings. My attention was on my screen, and the next time I looked up, she had flipped from her back to her front. “Yay,” I cheered. She’d tried it before and had gotten stuck, and now the deed was complete. We shared a happy, goofy smile, and I got back to work. I told my kids when they came home, and they cheered for little Shaindy too. One of the children called Shaindy’s bubby 158

We all grow up with fond memories of entertaining ourselves in the imaginative world of dollhouse play. Miniature furniture and teeny-tiny accessories are the perfect ingredients for hours of fun! The Most Expensive Dollhouse
What exactly are dollhouses? Dollhouses range from being simple boxes stacked together and used as rooms to play with, to multimilliondollar structures displayed in museums. Dollhouses are usually built in a 1:18 scale to create realistic looking items and rooms.
The Astolat Castle is the most valuable dollhouse in the world, with an estimated value of $8.5 billion and 10,000 teenytiny items adorning its interior.
DIY! You can attempt to create your own dollhouse with practically anything lying around your house. Think cardboard, popsicle sticks, buttons and Q-tips… your options are limitless! Let those creative juices flow!

Wealthy women in Holland and Germany use miniature houses to study fashion and decor.
Mothers employ dollhouses to teach their daughters how to maintain a proper home.
Exact miniature copies of one’s home, called baby houses, become a popular way to showcase the homeowner’s wealth and prosperity.
Dollhouses become a popular toy as people learn the importance of child play.
This era is considered the “dollhouse boom” as dollhouse purchases skyrocket when mass produced dollhouses become available and affordable to the average American.

The Ultimate Dollhouse England, ever grateful to their Queen Mary, presented her with a magnificent dollhouse as a birthday gift and a token of appreciation for her utmost dedication during World War I. Designed by a top architect who ensured that everything was true to scale, the dollhouse, which is still in existence, features contributions of 1,500 tradesmen and artists. It measures 102 inches by 58 inches, and is 60 inches tall. Queen Mary’s dollhouse boasts running water and miniatures created by famous brands, including a Singer sewing machine, china by Doulton, clocks crafted by Cartier, and even cars from Rolls Royce and Daimler! Sir Arthur Conan Doyle even penned a short story of 500 words for the miniature library. Exquisite furniture adorn each room, and a detailed Victorian wardrobe can be viewed in the queen’s suite. This opulent dollhouse is currently on display in the Windsor Castle and is a masterful record of times gone by.
Productive Play General doll play helps children express themselves, practice adult roles and responsibilities, and builds selfesteem. Here are some more benefits of dollhouse play: • When playing with dollhouses, children put their imagination and creativity to work as they recreate scenes and situations in their little houses. The fun is unlimited; each day the play could be so different! • Playing with a dollhouse trains children in social situations by mimicking everyday life. By repeating behaviors and practicing basic social interactions, they can then integrate them into real life. • Decorating and furnishing dollhouses help children gain creative confidence. Dollhouses also help development of fine motor skills, because they require putting small objects in even smaller spaces. You need super hand-eye coordination to tuck a twoinch doll into bed without knocking over all the other furniture and dolls in its path!
A Dollhouse Vacation Two men from London known for their gags and stunts pulled a prank on Airbnb, the popular vacation rental listing. They carefully photographed a centuries-old dollhouse famous for its exquisite furnishings and accessories, and then went ahead and listed the house for rent on Airbnb. They waited for Airbnb to catch on, and then waited some more… but there was only silence — even though they’d included a full-size water bottle and a bank card in some photos to provide a sense of scale. In the meantime, eager vacationers booked dates at the dollhouse, and the money began flowing in. The pranksters had already collected a whopping $3,000 in reservations (which they ended up returning) by the time the rest of the world caught on that they’d “advertised one of the world’s smallest properties on one of the world’s biggest websites,” as one of the two men said.
Do you find dolls creepy? With their staring eyes and stiff bodies, you’re not the only one suffering from pediophobia, or a fear of dolls!
