CustomSkinWorks by White Orchid are the facials of the future. Introduce your skin to a new era of pore decongestion, improved hydration, increased circulation, healed acne, and overall cosmetic enhancement. We do it with advanced LED light and ultrasound technology combined with skin-nourishing care treatment.
HOW DOES IT WORK? It’s like an exercise for your skin cells. The LED light triggers your skin to naturally heal, with blue light helping to improve acne and sunburns and red light stimulating collagen and reducing redness. Ultrasound waves improve healing and pore decongestion while our natural enzyme botanical gel acts as a gentle exfoliator to strengthen, soften, and smooth your skin.

(Re: Kindness in Hospital Corridors, Issue 133) I was very touched to read about the doctors who go the extra mile to deliver a caring experience to people who are suffering. It brought to mind so many special people in the medical field we’ve seen over the years, whose good cheer and extra dose of kindness always made dealing with health issues so much more pleasant. (Re: Impetigo, Issue 133) Thank you for your informative article on impetigo and infections in general. Too many mothers do not realize that infections are contagious and that their kids have to be kept away from others when they are infected with something like it, and I appreciate the awareness the article brought to the issue. On the topic of staph infections, I’d like to share that my son had a MRSA infection, and we had a hard time treating it and protecting my other children from it. My doctor advised that I start putting some bleach into the bath every time my kids have a bath, and, baruch Hashem, it has worked wonders! We have not had a MRSA comeback since, so I want to share the information with anyone who is struggling with something like it. S. Steinmetz

(Re: Tagged for Your Tiny Tot, Issue 132) What a great roundup of toddler items you featured! I never even knew these things existed, and I can use a number of them for my little one who’s just about hitting that curious stage. I especially love the novelty of the faucet extenders. I noticed there was nothing food-related, so I wanted to share something that was a sanity-saver for me in the past. Munchkin has spill-proof snack cups (available at baby sections in groceries or department stores) that allow little fingers to remove one piece at a time without turning over the entire snack within seconds. A similar item I love for that age is the 360-degree spill-proof cup. With much appreciation, N.T.

(Re: Excursions Supplement, Issue 131) I’m writing this long overdue letter to let you know how much I appreciated the listing of trip ideas in the Pesach magazine! I’m sure it was a lot of work to put together. I visited Teatown Lake Reservation on chol hamoed and would highly recommend it. The trail I chose was clearly marked and easy to follow. The area was really beautiful and scenic, and the walk was most enjoyable. I definitely plan on returning in the future. Thank you for your suggestions, and for enhancing my yom tov. Sincerely, Gittel Karniol
NOT SOMETHING TO GLORIFY
(Re: A Diamond for Everyone, Issue 131) I was quite disappointed by the article you ran on Swarovski crystals. Far be it for a heimish publication to glorify a business with a known Nazi past. I’m sure many of your readers are descendants of Holocaust survivors — or even survivors themselves — and writing about a company like this is insensitive and wrong. Rabbi S.
YOUR VOICE PROTECT YOUR SONS
I am writing this letter after witnessing another boy flying into the avenue as I was starting to turn in. Besides the safety precautions he was not taking, what shook me up was the fact that he wasn’t even wearing a helmet. Boys should certainly utilize their free time by spending it in the fresh air and enjoying themselves, and biking is a very healthy outlet! Yet we are commanded to guard our health, which makes wearing a helmet a mitzvah d’Oraisa. It scares me to see so many boys recklessly riding their bikes without a helmet. It is shocking that a parent would allow their child on a bike like that. These helmets are here to protect us, are they not? A Concerned Neighbor

PARSHAS BEHAR An Eye on the Blessing
Parshas Behar contains the beloved mitzvah of Shemittah. The pasuk says, “And if you should say, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year?’ then ‘v’tzivisi es birchasi —I will command My bracha for you in the sixth year, and it will yield produce for three years” (Vayikra 25:20–21). Rav Chatzkel Levenstein, zt”l, noted that according to the pasuk above, it seems as if the question “What will we eat?” was what brought about the commandment of Hashem’s bracha. “Had they not asked this question,” Rav Chatzkel asks, “would they not have received the bracha?” THEY WERE about to drink l’chaim. But the chasan’s side was asking for $10,000, a massive sum at the time, and Reb Shlomo* had no idea how he could possibly make the commitment. He went over to the Rosh Yeshivah of Etz Chaim, Reb Avraham Yakov Zelaznik, zt”l, and asked what he was meant to do. He simply could not see himself coming up with so much money. Reb Avraham Yakov instructed his talmid to go ahead with the shidduch. “There is no choice. Sooner or later, you will have to commit to a sum greater than your means in order to marry off your daughter. Better you should commit now than wait unnecessarily, and Hashem will help.” Much to everyone’s joy, the shidduch was completed. Reb Shlomo soon returned to the Rosh Yeshivah. “What should I do now? Where should I start?” he asked. “Now you need to do some hishtadlus,” was the reply. “Go to the yeshivah’s office and ask for the addresses of some of our wealthy donors. Write to them, asking for help.” Reb Shlomo did just that. But those sitting in the office were not too happy about the request. “Do you think we would give out such sensitive information? We can’t share our donor list.” “But the Rosh Yeshivah told me to ask for it,” Reb Shlomo said. In the end they gave him the details of one donor who had lost much of his money and was not in a position to give too much. Of course, they didn’t tell this to Reb Shlomo… Reb Shlomo did his hishtadlus. He wrote a heartfelt letter to

this donor and hoped for positive results. A few weeks later, an envelope arrived in the mail. Inside was a check for $10,000. Exactly. Reb Shlomo shared his elation with the hanhalah, who quickly sent a fundraising letter to that donor on behalf of the yeshivah. The donor, however, replied that although he would have loved to give a sizeable donation, he simply did not have the means. He explained that his daughter had fallen sick, and he promised to donate $10,000 in her zechus to the next charity request that he received. And Reb Shlomo’s hachnasas kallah solicitation was the first envelope in his mailbox… * * * * * Everyone in Salant knew of the high level of bitachon of Reb Yosef Zundel, zt”l. On many occasions they witnessed him achieving the supernatural in the merit of his deep-rooted trust in Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Though Reb Yosef Zundel didn’t have two pennies to rub together, as his daughter came of age, he expressed his pure belief that Hashem would send him a son-in-law who was a true talmid chacham. This was like a wild dream, totally unattainable. Without a penny toward a dowry, there was no conceivable way he could find a chasan of such caliber. One day, a young ilui named Shmuel arrived in Salant. He was a serious, diligent talmid chacham with a depth and breadth of knowledge that impressed everyone in town.

One of the wealthier townspeople was so shocked that he literally fell onto the floor. Reb Yosef Zundel soon heard that Shmuel had been married for a short while to the daughter of one of his rebbeim, but the marriage had not worked out. Thus, he had looked to move to a new town and made Salant his destination. Reb Yosef Zundel developed a close relationship with the young talmid chacham, who learned b’chavrusa with Reb Yisroel Salanter, the father of the Mussar movement. In time, Reb Yosef Zundel suggested his daughter to Reb Shmuel, and the shidduch was concluded. Reb Shmuel, who soon moved to Eretz Yisroel, became famed as Reb Shmuel Salant, the Rav of Yerushalayim. The townspeople were blown away by the shidduch. One of the wealthier townspeople was sitting on his sofa when he heard the news, and he was so shocked that he literally fell onto the floor. That one of the poorest people in town succeeded at finding such a special son-in-law without having to promise the usual large dowry was so obviously the work of Hashem. It was simply beyond the natural way of the world! * * * * * Rav Chatzkel Levenstein explained: The Yidden were not worrying about where they would get their food. Obviously, one who is prepared to let his fields lie fallow also believes that he will not lose out from following the ways of Hashem! Thus, their question of “What will we eat?” was their realization of the miracles being performed for them. Indeed, when a person would pays attention to the patterns of his harvest, he would suddenly notice the extra bracha he received from Above. Growing a three-year supply of produce is most certainly a miracle! In the same way, we must constantly open our eyes and pay attention to the miracles around us. From where do we have food for breakfast? Clothes to wear? Who is giving us health, family, our house? Asking ourselves this question allows us to notice the extra bracha we receive and the nissim in our lives.

We are currently in the year that is most beloved and precious to Hashem. Hakadosh Baruch Hu specifically distinguishes the seventh in a series as most dear. Some examples, other than Shemittah are: Shabbos, the seventh day of the week; Tishrei, the seventh month of the year; Moshe Rabbeinu, the seventh builder of Klal Yisroel; and Dovid Hamelech, the seventh son of Yishai.

Public Outcry Prompts Lufthansa Apology After 100+ Jewish Passengers Banned From Flight One week after trying to play down allegations of anti-Semitism stemming from an incident that had more than 100 Jewish passengers barred from their connecting flight, Lufthansa has issued an apology and suspended the employees involved pending an internal investigation. The incident occurred on May 4, when dozens of visibly Jewish passengers heading to Hungary to mark the yahrtzeit of Reb Shayale Kerestir flew from JFK to Budapest on Lufthansa with a stopover in Frankfurt. According to DansDeals, the vast majority of the passengers on the New York to Frankfurt leg of the flight were Jewish, with some traveling as part of a group, while others had made their own arrangements. Passengers reported that the pilot made an announcement halfway through the flight warning of repercussions for those in violation of the airline’s mask rules, but that most were wearing their masks as required by Lufthansa. After landing in Frankfurt, passengers were greeted at the connecting gate to Budapest by a large number of armed German police officers, some of whom were carrying submachine guns. Nearly all of the Jewish passengers were not allowed to board their flight to Hungary, with some informed that they were being denied passage because they were part of “the

group.” Video emerged of a Lufthansa gate agent telling one man that since a few Jewish passengers had not worn their masks on the flight from JFK, all of the Jewish passengers were being punished and banned from the Frankfurt to Budapest flight. Just 30 passengers were on board the Hungary-bound flight when it took off, with approximately 130 Jewish passengers left behind in the Frankfurt airport, with Lufthansa taking the additional punitive action of barring them from any of its flights within the next 24 hours. Lufthansa issued a statement on May 10 after the story surfaced in the media, expressing its regrets for “the circumstances surrounding the decision to exclude the affected passengers,” which it referred to as “the large group.” Because it failed to mention anti-Semitic discrimination, incorrectly classified dozens of unrelated flyers as members of a single group, and included other errors and omissions, the statement sparked a new wave of public outrage, and the story made headlines on major media outlets in the United States, Israel and Germany. Within two days, Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal, Berlin’s community rabbi, was contacted by Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr, who apologized for the incident. Spohr arranged a follow-up meeting with Rabbi Teichtal to discuss further steps, calling his employees’ actions unacceptable and saying that employees involved had been suspended as the airline investigates the matter. According to COLlive, Rabbi Teichtal called on Lufthansa to provide awareness training for its employees. “If an employee in Lufthansa uniform acts wrongly, concerns and accusations of anti-Semitism are quite legitimate,” said Rabbi Teichtal. “More sensitivity may be expected from a German corporation. I am pleased that the CEO of Lufthansa reacted so quickly, took a clear position, and apologized.” But with Lufthansa still failing to address the matter publicly with an official apology as of Sunday night, the matter has escalated to the federal level, with New Jersey Congressman Chris Smith sending a scathing letter to Spohr in his capacity as a founding member of the House of Representatives’ Bipartisan Task Force for Combatting Anti-Semitism and the Inter-Parliamentary Task Force to Combat Online Anti-Semitism. Smith pulled no punches in his letter, saying he was utterly disgusted by the incident. In it, he demanded an explanation for the airline’s discriminatory actions and asked how the affected passengers will be made whole, what kind of corrective ac-

tion will be taken against the Lufthansa employees involved, and why it was necessary to bring police down to the gate. Smith’s letter also included a request for a meeting — either virtually with Spohr, or face to face with a senior Lufthansa representative — to hear an explanation of the May 4th events, adding that some of his Jewish constituents who were on the flight might be present for the conversation. He noted that he would be speaking with Ambassador Deborah Lipstadt, special envoy to monitor and combat anti-Semitism, on May 19 and asked that Lufthansa arrange the requested meeting prior to that date. “Ambassador Lipstadt has gone on record expressing her concern over the incident, which she labels ‘classic antiSemitism,’” wrote Smith. “Based on the evidence before me, I concur with this assessment, and the behavior of Lufthansa personnel cries out for an explanation.”
Adams Under Fire After Postponing Millions in Promised Funding for BQE Repairs A decision by Mayor Eric Adams to delay $180.5 million in funding designated for immediate repairs to the BrooklynQueens Expressway is not sitting well with area residents who are concerned about the roadway’s safety. NY1 reported that Adams shifted the money out of the city’s Fiscal 2023 budget, offering assurances that the full $1.5 billion earmarked to restore the highway’s integrity would be paid out sometime between now and the 2031 fiscal year. But those assurances rang hollow for those concerned about the safety of the roadway, which was found to be deteriorating significantly. A report released in the winter of 2021 indicated that BQE was in immediate need of emergency repairs to ensure its safety beyond the year 2026, and then-mayor Bill de Blasio announced plans last summer to extend the life of the roadway by another 20 years, as previously reported in The Boro Park View. Under de Blasio’s plan, traffic on the BQE between Atlantic Avenue and the Brooklyn Bridge was reduced from three lanes to two in order to reduce weight along the roadway, with the former mayor announcing other measures, including immediate repairs to the BQE, minimizing corrosion by preventing water infiltration, and monitoring and managing traffic on the roadway. A triple cantilevered section of the roadway on the Brooklyn Heights Promenade has become an area of great concern, and City Councilman Lincoln Restler said that he hears daily from constituents who are extremely unhappy with Adams’ decision. A statement released by the Brooklyn Heights Association said that it was “reckless and unconscionable” to postpone repairs that could prevent a potential catastrophe. “We are almost halfway through 2022, and neighbors all along the cantilever are reporting increased levels of rumblings, vibrations, and just a few weeks ago, photos of falling debris from the underside of the structure were sent to the DOT,” said the association, adding, “Anyone who questions the disastrous impact of salt and water corrosion on concrete and rebar need only look to the Surfside [collapse] in Florida.” But New York City Department of Transportation Com-

missioner Ydanis Rodriguez dismissed those concerns, saying that “none of these decisions to move any money puts anything at risk.”
Information, Resources and More at Boro Park JCC Senior Health Expo More than 1,500 people participated in the Boro Park Jewish Community Council’s first-ever health expo for senior citizens, taking advantage of an opportunity to learn more about available services, programs and resources for those currently in their golden years. The free all-day event was held at Ateres Golda, where participants had six hours to explore more than 50 booths and to hear from the various speakers who were lined up throughout the day. A panel of top-notch specialists discussed cardiology, gastroenterology, diabetes and vascular health, while other experts in their fields addressed important issues including halachic wills, trusts, elder law, estate planning and senior services, among others. In addition to having a chance to take advantage of complementary blood pressure, blood sugar and cancer screenings, participants were able to speak with NYPD officers who shared tips on avoiding scammers. Representatives of the Claims Conference were available to speak to Holocaust survivors, and personnel from the New York City Comptroller’s Office were able to help participants discover if they were owed any unclaimed funds by the state. Both Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein and City Councilman Kalman Yeger took part in the expo, which was also an opportunity for entertainment and inspiration. Well-known lecturer Rabbi Paysach Krohn and renowned speaker and badchan Rabbi Avrum Mordche Malach addressed the at-
tendees, each of whom received four passes to Yeled V’Yalda’s fitness center as well as BPJCC’s newly published senior guidebook, which contains more than 150 pages of resources and helpful information. BPJCC CEO Avi Greenstein said that the expo was designed to fill a growing need in the Boro Park community, with attendance exceeding all expectations. Plans are in place for the expo to become an annual event, held each year after Pesach. “Seniors are thirsty for this,” said Greenstein. “When you see a jam-packed event of over 1,500 seniors showing up to the first ever senior expo, that is a testament to the extraordinary need for this and the void that the BPJCC is filling by taking on this issue of helping seniors head on. Baruch Hashem, we made, and are continuing to make, tremendous progress.”

C H A P T E R 10 RECAP: Zach Ganz wakes up exhausted. He has a busy day ahead of him, trying to figure out what happened to his career so suddenly. He confirms who is behind this sudden attack, but that doesn’t seem to get him anywhere. Later, as Chaim Simcha and Izzy are about to pick up their car and head home, Zach appears at the door of their hotel room.
I
zzy stared at his cousin in shock. Zach Ganz seemed to have fallen apart in the few hours since they’d last seen him. The silver-smooth hair was now a dusty gray, the delicate laugh lines now mere crow’s feet. And he had a stooping posture, as if he were carrying a weight he couldn’t quite identify. But it was the eyes that told the story most clearly. He had a harried, tired look that gave Izzy the impression of a man on the run. Zach stood just inside the doorway, the cold air tussling his already-unkempt hair. With the embarrassed look of a person who suddenly realizes they’ve committed a faux pas, he looked from Izzy to Chaim Simcha, forcing some of the old charm back to his face with an awkward smile.
“Sorry to barge in,” he began. “The door opened, and I thought —” “Come, come,” Chaim Simcha interrupted, shutting the door firmly behind them. “I’d offer you something to drink, but we really don’t have anything but water and stale coffee.” “Water’s fine,” Zach said. Izzy watched as his brother puttered about at the sink, making a show of being a gracious host. He seemed determined to put Zach at ease. They waited a bit while Zach drank, pulled off his coat, and looked around awkwardly for a place to put it. “Toss it on a bed,” Chaim Simcha suggested. Beneath his thick jacket, Zach wore a tailored Italian suit that probably fit him perfectly most of the time. At the moment, however, it looked slightly too large as
Zach sank into one of the puffy chairs by the tiny table. “Everything all right, Mr. Ganz?” Izzy asked. “It’s Zach. Just Zach.” He gave a short bark of laughter as he stared into nothing. “We’re family, after all.” Chaim Simcha caught Izzy’s eye, and they shared a moment of silent communication. There was only one other chair in the room. Izzy immediately plopped down on the edge of the bed, and both bothers pulled off their own coats. They obviously wouldn’t be leaving soon. “What’s up, Zach?” Chaim Simcha asked in a soft, pleasant tone. Zach stared moodily at the ground. After a long pause, he asked, “Rabbi, does Judaism believe in curses?” Surprised, Izzy gazed at their guest and tried to understand where this was coming from. Was this the suave, confident man of the world they’d spoken to so recently? Izzy wondered idly which was the real Zach Ganz —the smooth politician, or this mercurial, superstitious, broken man? Izzy knew that most people were far less stable than they made it out to be, and public figures were certainly no better. The only difference was that public figures, who had to at least look puttogether, lied about it more often. Maybe Zach was always like this. Or maybe the real Zach was a calm, put-together sort of fellow. If so, he thought, what has happened since last night to put him in such a state? “Sometimes,” Chaim Simcha responded carefully. “It’s not common these days. But we do hear of what we’ll call dark spiritual forces, that evil people sometimes make use of. Bilaam tried to curse the Jewish people. He was a master of curses.” Zach looked up, eyes wide. “How would I know if someone has cursed me?” Chaim Simcha stroked his beard and considered. “Hmmm… Have you experienced any sudden misfortune lately? Something that openly breaks the laws of nature?” Zach seemed to struggle for a moment. “Supernatural? Why? Are curses always like that?” “Answering a question with another question? I see you’re closer to your Jewish heritage than you thought…”

last drops slide around the perimeter. “I’m Untouchable now, political poison. Whoever does support me will be guilty by association…” He trailed into silence. So, Izzy thought, Zach had a turnaround, and now he was discovering religion? It wasn’t a very nice thought, but Izzy was always a little disgusted by people who ignored Hashem through years and years of good fortune, then complained when He sent them a touch of trouble. What did they expect? That they could spend their whole lives on cruise control, and Hashem would just sit back and do nothing? He said nothing, knowing this was hardly the right attitude for a ben Torah. But he couldn’t stop himself thinking it. Chaim Simcha sat there, hands clasped loosely in front of him, maintaining a cheerful alertness. He seemed to feel that Zach wasn’t quite finished talking. The silence stretched while Zach turned his coffee cup over and over, and Izzy pinked, feeling suddenly like an intruder on a private scene. Finally, after a minute or so passed, Zach seemed to pull himself together and looked around in surprise. “Well, Rabbi,” he asked, “what does it mean?” That was apparently what Chaim Simcha had been waiting for, because his face lit up. “When a person’s life is turned upside-down like this, it can mean a lot of things. Maybe there’s some evil decree against you in Heaven. No.” He held up a hand to stop Zach from asking anything. “It doesn’t mean you need to perform exorcisms, or delve into mystical texts, or anything like that. I have it on excellent authority that a string of bad fortune usually means you owe someone a very sincere apology. Look through your life and think if there’s anyone you’ve hurt deeply. The way we treat others can be a powerful bridge in our relationship to Heaven. “Then again,” Chaim Simcha con-
tinued, “you might find that this whole experience is actually a gateway leading you to a change in your life, a change you wouldn’t otherwise make, but which will ultimately make you much happier. In that case, painful as it is to go through, it’s really a blessing in disguise. Or it might be a different kind of blessing — a challenge that builds you into a better person, someone more capable of achieving great things in the world.” He looked up at Zach with an expression of mild curiosity, as if they were discussing a question no more personal than how to read a Rashi. “Does any of that resonate with you?” Zach started to answer, then glanced at his watch with a horrified expression. He stood up, suddenly very self-conscious. “I’m sorry, Rabbi. I’ve got that press-conference in thirty minutes. I’m running late! Thanks for your time.” Chaim Simcha smiled. “My pleasure. Why don’t you join us this Shabbos? You’d probably appreciate the respite. We can talk more then.” Zach paused in the act of throwing on his coat, a very strange expression on his face. “Maybe,” he said finally. A moment later, he was gone. “Well, that was…. interesting,” Izzy said as he cleaned up the coffee. “Let’s get the car. By the way, why didn’t you tell him to go to Poland with us to get the manuscript? Wouldn’t that be the obvious reason Hashem ruined his campaign? So it would get him to help us?” “It might be,” Chaim Simcha responded, throwing his coat on. “But lav davka. If so, Hashem will have to send another shaliach to tell him so. I won’t push my personal needs on someone coming to me for guidance.” He opened the door once more, letting the freezing cold air steal through the room again. “You ready to roll?” TO BE CONTINUED...

Indeed, research on CBD is only just now starting to unveil the potential medical benefits as a genuine natural medicine. Derived from an ancient remedy, CBD is currently being integrated into the modern pharmacy as both an effective and safe anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, and anti-seizure medicine. Additionally, research has shown that side effects of CBD are usually only mild, if any. CBD is proving itself to be safer than aspirin and, in certain doses, is a more effective anti-inflammatory than steroids. CBD, derived from cannabis, has been part of the Jewish pharmacopoeia for centuries. For example, the Rambam prescribed cannabis oil for many upper respiratory ailments amongst others, as he was well versed in Torah Law which permitted cannabis growth in Israel’s farms. Modern science is now catching up with the Rambam and Kosher CBD is answering the call for safe, non-sedating, kosher formulations of CBD that include the full spectrum of 120+ cannabinoids. CHAPTER FIFTY-EIGHT RECAP: Osher
decides to stay in Acco for Purim. He engraves a broomstick as a gift for his sister Ariella. Ariella realizes the importance of what she is doing for the Berg children, and it fills her with a deep sense of happiness.
“I
t’s amazing!” Doron Nachman gripped the finished broom with two hands. “And there’s a certain style here… you didn’t just make lines with that tool, whatever it is you call it.” “What did you think?” “I don’t know; I didn’t realize how talented you are. How long have you been working on this? Since you bought it at the market?” “Yeah. It’s been almost a week.” Osher took the broom and put it under the bed. One day he would meet up with Ariella, and he’d give her this gift. “I also saw you working on some pictures. They’re really, really nice.” Osher muttered something, a bit impatiently. “You know, when someone compliments you, it’s customary to say ‘thank you.’” “Really? Okay, then. Thank you.” Osher rolled his eyes. “I’m going down to eat breakfast. Are you going to sleep?” “Yes.” Doron grinned lopsidedly. “And then I’ll be stopping to annoy you.” Osher muttered something that sounded like, “That’s exactly what I was hoping for.” He left the room and almost collided with Reb Elazar, who was on his way up. “Osher!” Rabbi Reiness exclaimed. “What is this? Aren’t you eating today?” “I just went upstairs to show the security guard something I made. He asked me about it after Shacharis.” “May I see it?” Osher bit his bottom lip. Rabbi Reiness waited patiently; he could almost see the wheels turning in the boy’s mind.

“Fine,” Osher said at last, and went back into his room. Rabbi Reiness waited at the door, leaning on the jamb. From downstairs, the faint aroma of omelets wafted up, mixed with the sweet scent of hot cocoa. “Here,” Osher said when he emerged. “This is what I made.” “These designs?” Reb Elazar held the broomstick close to his eyes and lowered his glasses. “This is really special, Osher! The design on the stick reminds me of something… let me think what…” He was quiet for a moment. “Oh, of course. L’havdil, the atzei chaim of a sefer Torah! Wait,” he said as they walked together down the stairs. “I have a friend in Haifa who has a small factory that produces atzei chaim and wooden Sefer Torah cases. I’ll take you there when I have a chance, b’ezras Hashem.” “To Haifa?” Osher mulled over the idea. “And what are we going to do there?” “We’ll see. Maybe we’ll buy some plain atzei chaim from my friend, and you can design them.” “Maybe he can show us exactly how to build these things,” Osher said quietly, “and we’ll tell Matari that he can prepare those for me. I’ll decorate them, and then the carpentry shop can sell those, too. I really like this kind of work.” “I don’t think we’re going to start producing atzei chaim,” the Rav said, putting a hand on Osher’s shoulder. “It wouldn’t be fair to my friend, as you can surely imagine.” “You have friends everywhere,” Osher muttered, wriggling his shoulder away from the Rav’s hand. “How did that happen to you?” “It didn’t happen all at once. It’s a result of years of work.” “I saw you in a picture with your friend once, and you were laughing and enjoying his company. Oh, except… in the end I decided that it’s probably your father.” Osher blushed. “It was on the floor near the front closet.” “A picture of my father? That’s possible.” They reached the courtyard. “Why did you decide that it was him?” “Because you look just like him, but it’s a very old picture. He’s with a friend.” “Oh, I think I know which one you mean. He and his friend were standing next to a wall?” “Yes.” “Zelig…” Reb Elazar murmured, and entered the carpentry shop. “Yes, it is my father in that picture.” “So it’s in your genes to have a lot of friends, huh?” Osher remarked. “In my family, only my sister Ariella is successful at that kind of thing.” “I think that most of the boys here really like you, and you will continue to learn, b’ezras Hashem, how to really acquire friends,” Reb Elazar said firmly. “How are your other sisters, socially?” Osher thought for a moment. “Don’t know,” he said with a measure of surprise. “I don’t think I’ve ever thought about it. So when will we go to your friend in Haifa? Tomorrow?” “No, tomorrow you’re going to Zichron Yaakov.” “Zichron Yaakov? Didn’t I finish with Dr. Kreisman

I want him to decorate those drawers.” ***** This was the first time Osher was seeing the apartment down the alley. It was a large, two-floor apartment located in an old building. “Rabbi Reiness probably means this chest,” Gideon said. His eyebrows were still raised. “We keep all of our important documents here: ID cards, medical papers and all that. Take one drawer for now.” When shiur was over, the boys began milling into the carpentry shop to pick up with the projects they were working on. Osher brought in the rickety drawer. “Oh, nice!” Yehuda Matari looked at the old drawer with interest. “Are you going to decorate that? Good. Our torch came out of retirement because of you.” “Why don’t you use it?” “First of all, I don’t think my talent lies in this field,” Matari said. “But the main reason is that burning is a very antique kind of medium.” “So how do you make all those moldings, like the ones on bookcases?” Osher asked. “That’s carving, maybe some etching, but not burning.” “I meant this…” Osher hurried to the desk in the corner of the room and picked up a colorful catalog that was from a different carpentry firm. He flipped through it, and then turned back a page. “Here, these moldings, on 110

this baby crib, isn’t that wood-burning?” Matari narrowed his eyes and looked at the photo. “No,” he said finally. “It’s very fine etching, and it’s painted dark blue underneath so it looks burned, but it’s not.” “I’d like to copy this design,” Osher said decisively. “I like it.” And he went to take the torch from the shelf. For the next half an hour, the design flowed from his fingers, and beautiful curves appeared on the front of the old drawer. But at the last minute it was all ruined, when an ugly line exceeded the boundary and messed up the pattern. Osher plunked the drawer down with a frustrated thump, and the drawer fell apart. ***** The waves were being rebellious; again and again, they carried the scratched wooden rectangle back to the beach. “I don’t want it!” Osher hollered, his voice carrying in the wind. “I — don’t — want — to — see — it!” Then he took a deep breath, trying to restore his equilibrium. But how could he calm down when everything he did got ruined? No one understood him. Who at the carpentry shop had even noticed how hard he’d worked on the design, how intricate it was? They built big things there, serious stuff. The minute he wasn’t able to do what they did, then whatever he was doing wasn’t worth much to them. They didn’t even look at the corner where he’d been sitting for at least half an hour, patiently burning the wood. Every few minutes, Matari commented, “Very nice, very nice,” but he didn’t even look at the moldings that were taking shape. His “very nice” was said in a tone of “it’s a good thing you’ve found yourself something productive to do,” and Osher knew it. If Reb Elazar would have been around, he might have taken a closer look and complimented him. But he hadn’t been there, and even if he had been — Osher felt his breath grow short again — his compliments would have been said out of pity, in an effort to help the poor boy named Osher. Again, the drawer landed on the wet sand, but Osher didn’t even deign to give it another look.

“Enough,” he said. “Enough.” “Are you talking to a piece of wood?” Someone addressed him from behind. Was it that Yosef again? The man approached. Again, the waves drew up onto the beach, and the piece of wood floated onto the foam. But Osher knew that in a minute, they would cast his failed work at his feet yet again. “What is this? Can I see it?” Yosef bent down and picked up the front of the broken drawer a moment before the sea carried it out again. “Don’t bother,” Osher said. “I already know it won’t work. Something about the direction of the wind today, I guess.” “What won’t work?” Yosef asked, studying the design with interest. “Throwing this thing into the water.” “Do you really want to throw this into the water?” The man looked at him, wide-eyed. “Yes, I really want to throw it into the water.” “But why?” “Because it came out awful.” Osher’s fingers dug into the wet sand, and he pulled out a salt-eaten seashell. “What’s awful? This? Tell me, is something wrong with you?” “Nothing’s wrong with me.” “If you want to throw this to the sea, then obviously something’s wrong with you. It’s amazing, this thing! You, what’s your name? Osher?” “Yes.” Osher didn’t remember whether he’d ever shared his name with this man, but perhaps he had. “Listen, Osher, I know a bit about these things. This is really beautiful, this design. Did you make this?” “Yes.” “And you don’t want it?” “No.” Osher stood up. “Can I take it? I’ll pay you, of course.” Osher barked out a laugh. “No,” he said. “Why, don’t you agree to sell it to me?” “I mean, no, you can’t be serious.” “Not serious? Why not? I’ve very serious! This is fantastic! My friend, your rabbi, wasn’t happy? Did he tell you to throw it away?” “He didn’t even see it,” Osher said wearily. “If he would see this, I’m sure he’d be impressed!”
Osher turned away. “Hey, one minute!” Osher turned his head back, and the man handed him a bill of NIS 200. “This is payment, okay? And make more designs like this one; I’ll buy them from you, too.” Osher looked at him in disbelief. “Do you really want it?” “Yes! Do I look like I’m joking?” “So come down to the carpentry shop. I have two design samples there. But… you know what? They’re not as nice as this one.” He looked at the design, and his face clouded. “This isn’t nice enough either. Are you sure you want to buy it?” He looked at the man, who was nodding with a serious expression on his face, and then lowered his eyes to examine his handiwork. He turned the drawer over and looked at it from all sides, trying to find a crack or something. Maybe the drawer had to do with a secret of the Rav, and this man — like in books — wanted to get hold of it? Maybe inside it was the Rav’s father’s will? But the wooden slab was just that: a wooden slab. Broken and dried out at the edges, full of scratches, and the original design in the center was almost invisible because of the dirt and fingerprints from decades of use. There was nothing inside it, and it couldn’t even be used as a drawer anymore. Osher handed Yosef the wooden board, took the proffered money, and held it up to the sun. “If I’m in the mood to make you something, I’ll get to work on it sometime over the next two days. So come to the carpentry shop to see what I’m up to.” “I don’t feel comfortable going in there,” the man said with a laugh. “As long as I haven’t had time to come and meet my friend properly, I prefer not to come by for other things. You surely understand that. We need to be polite.” “I actually don’t understand these things so much — at least that’s what everyone tells me — but okay.” Osher put the money into his pocket. “So I’ll come by tomorrow afternoon. No, not tomorrow. I’m going somewhere with the Rav then.” “Just you?” Yosef focused on the design once again. “Or is it a trip for everyone?” To be continued…

TESTIMONIAL I was suffering from severe chronic headaches. I saw many different specialists and tried many medicines but I saw no relief. I even tried acupuncture at one point but it didn’t help. At one point I got other pains as well such as stomach pain, back pain and chronic fatigue. I would fall asleep at shiur every day. One day someone told me that I should try the sarno method since it can really help me. It actually helped me tremendously! Within a few days I got rid of my stomach pains and back pains and fatigue. A short while later I was able to get rid of my headaches too. I am off pills today and have my life back after learning the sarno method.

After almost four long months, the strike at the Finnish paper mills from where we source The Boro Park View’s paper has finally come to an end on April 22. However, the mills are still not running, and it will take a while for the first shipment of paper to arrive in the U.S. Throughout the strike, with paper being so hard to come by, we did all we could to obtain the best paper to maximize The Boro Park View reading experience, even as the prices of paper skyrocketed. However, to our regret, this week we have once again been forced to print a small section of our magazine on high-quality newsprint. We are hopeful that this will be the last time we will need to do so. In two to three weeks, this issue should be behind us entirely. At that time, we will continue to provide premium-quality printing across the board. We want to take this opportunity to thank you, our dear advertisers and readers, for your understanding and patience as we weathered this crisis.

he theme of Lag Ba’omer relates to the talmidim of Rabi Akiva and is marked by the joyous return of music to our lives. I recently had the zechus to speak with Reb Moshe Tzvi (Howard) Birnbaum, a former professional musician who, reminiscent of Rabi Akiva, overcame great challenges to begin learning Torah at an advanced age. Mr. Birnbaum was born 74 years ago in what he terms a “suburb called Brooklyn.” He grew up in a traditional home, but his father was a Yiddishist and sent him as a child to a Yiddish school on Eastern Parkway. However, he found it to be ah bissel shver. Besides being one of the youngest in his class, it was extremely difficult for him to learn to read or write the language. Eventually, Mr. Birnbaum was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning disorder that affects areas of the brain that process language. People with dyslexia have difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words. Back then, the resources to deal with these issues were very limited. “I couldn’t function in that environment due to my reading disability, which stayed with me my entire life,” he admits frankly. Yet, curiously, his ability to read and play music wasn’t affected by his dyslexia. “I was an oral learner and took to music easily, and I didn’t find reading musical cores to be a challenge,” Mr. Birnbuam explains. He developed his musical talent to a high degree. “I was a professional classical musician for 40 years.

I went to the Juilliard music school in Manhattan and played trumpet in a number of famous orchestras. I was one of the youngest members of the Metropolitan Opera, and at the age of seventeen, played the opening at Lincoln Center.” But about twenty years ago, Mr. Birnbaum began playing a new song.
Reminiscent of Rabi Akiva marrying Rochel, “I became frum and married my wife, Sorah, who had become frum thirteen years earlier. We moved to Teaneck, New Jersey.” Although his new life as a frum married man was sweet, there was one sour note. “Now I had to learn Hebrew — but how? I’d go to adult classes to try to master the davening, getting up at 5:00 a.m. to do so,” he says. But nothing helped; his dyslexia seemed to make that impossible. “People are very patient,” he says, “but most people expect that you can read. It was very uncomfortable.” The normally jovial and confident man began to recede. “I’d shy away from things. If I had a yahrtzeit, I’d ask someone else to daven.” It seemed like a life without being able to read the lashon hakodesh of the sefarim and siddur was his fate, until a

yeshuah arrived from an unexpected source. “About five years ago one of my grandchildren had similar issues: He was the youngest in his class and had a very bad case of dyslexia. He was struggling, and the teachers wanted him to repeat first grade.” Searching for a way to save his grandson from the frustrations he himself had grown up with, Mr. Birnbaum spoke to a friend who recommended Neuro Technics. But the boy was embarrassed to go by himself, so Mr. Birnbaum made him an offer that would change both of their lives. “I have the same issue,” he said, “so you know what? I’ll go first, and then I’ll take you along.” Besides helping his grandson, Mr. Birnbaum desperately wanted to help himself. “I felt like I just can’t be this old and be illiterate; I have to be able to read the davening! I have to be able to understand!” Neuro Technics introduced him to a regimen of techniques geared to teaching people with dyslexia or similar issues how to read. Like a thirsty man in a desert, Mr. Birnbaum dove into them, both alone and with his grandson — who, after a year and a half of therapy, flourished. “Now at age sixteen, he’s getting straight A’s and is tremendously motivated,” boasts the proud zeidy. The techniques were effective, but demanding. To succeed, especially at this advanced age, required a lot of effort and commitment. To maintain and improve his Hebrew reading level required hours of daily practice. But Mr. Birnbaum’s musical career gave him just the tool he needed. “To succeed as a musician, one of the most important

techniques is repetition. The finest musicians take the simplest notes and go over them again and again to refine their skill.” Applying that same discipline and diligence, “I’d read the same words over and over again — Ashrei… yoshvei… veisecha… — at a very slow pace until I gained fluency. As a musician, I could be in my practice room for eight hours a day; it never bothered me. I took that attribute and applied it to gaining the skills to learn and daven.” Mr. Birnbaum’s courage and diligence have rightfully made him a role model for others facing similar challenges. “Adults who have dyslexia have to first fight the embarrassment of not being able to read and write at their age. When I meet people with the same problem I have, I tell them what I went through. They understand what I’m talking about.” While he encourages others, he never sugarcoats the effort involved. “I tell them that it isn’t going to come easily or naturally. You have to work at it. There’s no magic bullet. You have to sit down and practice, day in and day out. The issue improves, but it never fully goes away. It’s a slow process, but the reward is when you can read Tehillim, daven Shacharis, Mincha and Maariv, and feel that you have 99% of the words down. It’s a feeling of satisfaction. “Eventually, you get to a certain level of fluency where you can stop focusing on

the technique and start to focus on connecting with Hashem. As in music, you reach the level where you don’t have to focus on the piece of music, but you can focus on being a musician, on the entire orchestra. When I daven with a minyan, it’s like I’m davening with my ‘symphony orchestra’ — and I’m part of it! It’s very exciting.” Yet as his reading and davening career skyrocketed, his musical career plummeted. “When I became frum, I had to give up most of my music venues,” he says. “I’d be playing for Broadway musicals, and someone would call and say, ‘I can give you a month’s worth of work: two shows on Friday, three on Saturday.’ Then I’d tell them, ‘Okay, but there’s Shabbos, so I can’t do Friday or Saturday. Then there’s yom tov…’ When you cancel ten dates of the month, and you can only do one or two, the contractor says, ‘You know what, I’ll call you back.’” Though the musician’s paychecks stopped coming, Hashem made sure to fill the void. “I married up,” he quips. “My wife is a financial planner, who became a supportive kollel wife. She’s a tremendous spark plug and an eishes chayil.” Indeed, Mr. Birnbaum’s daily learning schedule would make a yungerman half his age proud. After his daily 7:00 “slow minyan,” he comes home at about 8:15 to learn the Daf, then learns via Zoom from 9:15 to 2:45. “When I’m on break, I do the

daf halacha and the daf mishnayos. I learn six or seven hours during the day, and then I have night seder, reviewing the Daf Yomi and daf halacha.” His amazing achievements are the fruit of both hard work and the proper attitude. When asked what message he would like to give over to others struggling to grow in learning, he answers with smiling but determined eyes, “Do the best that you can do. It may not be what someone else does, but never compare yourself to anybody else. That’s not what Hashem is looking for. “Each of us can become like Aaron and Moshe if we try to fulfill our own potential 100%, just like they did. It’s about the ameilus; you don’t have to accomplish everything, but you have to try. “Eventually, I’ll be able to read all of Tehillim, then I’ll try to memorize the kapitlach, and that will improve my davening. That’s the learning, that’s what will help bring Moshiach, that’s what Hashem wants, that’s the way we’re supposed to go.” If we can all follow Mr. Birnbaum’s inspiring lead, we’ll quite likely be hearing the heilege music in the Beis Hamikdash sooner than we think. HOW ONE YOUNG BOY RUNS AN ESTABLISHED BOOKBINDING BUSINESS, GIVING RENEWED LIFE TO OUR SACRED SEFORIM B Y :
P E R R Y
Meet Shulem, an impressive young man, all of thirteen years young. As he is an active cheder student, it’s tough for us to find some quiet time to talk. When we finally do, it is truly enlightening to hear him animatedly describe his growing enterprise of seforim binding, and his youthful energy reflects the confidence with which he devotes his skills to this unique avodah. 146

I’ve heard some incredible things about your bookbinding handiwork. It must be a true privilege to be able to take care of Hashem’s “library.” Can you tell us when and how you began to develop a passion for this profession?
Sure. Toward the end of last year, I began figuring out how to work the machinery we have at home, which my parents originally purchased for my older brother who would bind our family’s seforim and books. I found that I really had a knack for it and also enjoyed the process of binding. How did that turn into a professional business?
At the start of the current school year, I heard that our menahal (in Satmar cheder) was looking for someone to bind seforim, and so, after a lot of practice, I went over to him and let him know that I’m ready to accept work.

So do you repair seforim belonging to the cheder?
No, I bind seforim the boys bring from home for learning. Oh, so it’s a service for other boys. Do you take the seforim home to work on them?
Yes. My supplies are all at home, and that’s where I do the binding. I get home from cheder after six p.m. and that’s when I get to work. So is this “business” exclusively for your fellow chedermates, or do you have other customers as well?
No, I strengthen and repair books and seforim for many others as well. Another large source of work are shuls. I often see signs in batei medrash announcing that they’re seeking an experienced “binder” to maintain their siddurim and seforim, and I approach the gabbaim to let them know I can do it.

Additionally, friends and families in our neighborhood also give me seforim to bind, as well as books! People like to have old books repaired, and it’s also good to bind brandnew books so they stay neat and beautiful. Do you advertise at all?
No, there’s no need. I’m busy, baruch Hashem. Seems like you’ve had a successful start! Now let’s get technical. Can you explain the basic process of how you bind the books?
In order for you to understand how it works, let me first list the basic supplies I use. First let’s talk about tape. I’ve found that what works best is a roll of black binding tape and a roll of white binding tape, each measuring 1 inch in the width, as well as a separate roll of black binding tape that’s 2 inches in the width. I’ll also need a binding needle, which is longer and bulkier than a regular sewing needle and comes in a myriad of sizes, depending on preference. Next we’ll need some bookbinding thread, which is thicker than standard sewing thread. Finally, the main tool — whose purpose is to puncture holes in the book spine — is either of two things. The better option, which I’m fortunate to have, is a simple machine that has a sort of drill bit that rapidly moves downward on its own when I turn a side handle.

One can use a conventional drill in place of the machine, but a drill is harder to control and ultimately takes longer. It is good enough for a beginner to use, but once you have a nice stack of books to bind, it can get tiring… Okay, now that we can envision the standard supplies you work with, tell us what happens next.
Sure! First I open the sefer with care and gently stick the 1-inch white tape onto the inside fold of the front cover by putting half onto the cover and half onto the first page. Then I repeat the same steps on the inside back cover. After that, I’m ready for the fun part, which involves the drilling. First I place the book onto a designated shelf on the machine and rotate the lever by hand. This causes the drill bit to swiftly turn and puncture holes in the book spine. Then I move downward and create a new hole each time I turn the handle. Now we have holes going through the side of the book, as well as through the tape, and we’re ready to reinforce it with thread. I’m with you! Sounds like careful and exciting work all at once. So what happens next?
It truly is! At this point I double-thread the needle with a knot at the end of the loop, and begin sewing from the bottom hole from the outside of the book spine. I go in and out upward, and when it reaches the top hole, I sew downward, meeting each hole again. Then I finish at the bottom with a good knot. Finally it’s time for the finishing touches! The 2-inch black tape, placed diagonally, is used to cover the corners. Then I use the 1-inch black tape to cover the top and bottom of the spine border, and I also cover the inside and outside

me with the money for the necessary supplies, as they can be quite costly, but now I use the revenue to continue stocking up.
And that’s a wrap! Or should we say a bind? Wow, it truly looks professional, and your clarity is refreshing. How long does it take for you to complete one book or sefer?
Sounds like a great price for your customers. When did you start asking for pay?
I’d say by now around seven minutes. Experience really is the key. I’ve already bound around 500 seforim in the past year alone!
When I officially started to bind for the cheder. By then I had the necessary experience and felt that my work had value.
Wow, that’s a lot of work! And how much do you charge for this delicate labor?
I’m just wondering what you do if someone gives you a really worn out sefer or book to bind. Is it harder to repair?
I charge $2 for each book. Initially, my parents provided
Oh, that reminds me of one more tool I have. It’s an instrument that helps hold the book real tight so I can sew it up well. Can you share with us where you generally buy your supplies? I think our readers will “want to try this at home”!
These supplies are available at any hardware store. For those who would like to try their hand at it, I recommend first starting with a regular drill in order to puncture the holes; the machine is not necessary for a beginner. And I’m sure you’ll enjoy it! It feels great to give new life to seforim. You truly are a hardworking young man with a flourishing enterprise. Thank you for sharing your story and advice with our readers! We wish you a lot of hatzlacha in cheder, in this profession, and in all areas!

Thursday morning, bright and early, even before the younger children have been shuffled off to their respective buses, when my oldest daughter and I climb into a car bound for Rahway, New Jersey. Anticipation fills the air, and my daughter clutches her camera, excited to be missing a day of school to peek behind the scenes at the empire built by Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz, z”l, and Rabbi Nosson Scherman, with the help of Rabbi Sheah Brander. We’re headed to ArtScroll.

printed since its inception. “What’s the most printed sefer?” I ask Rabbi Hisiger. Pausing to think for only a moment, he reaches to the shelf behind him and pulls out the iconic blue Stone Chumash, sharing that this volume is one of the top selling ArtScroll volumes of all time. I’m not surprised. The Stone Chumash is a staple in almost every shul. Other staples, of course, are the Schottenstein Gemaras, as well as the many commentaries on Tanach, ranging from Rashi to the Ohr Hachaim. Rabbi Hisiger pulls out a volume of the ArtScroll Tosafos, showing me the intricacies of the elucidation. “Tosafos is extremely complicated, and to really understand it, you need not just translation, but also context and background information.” He flips to the front of the sefer and points to a list of talmidei chachamim who worked on this one volume. The list is long indeed. “Each scholar adds a layer of information,” he explains. These scholars, who comprise the staff of the Mesorah

Many of them do it from their own homes, though the Mesorah Heritage Foundation maintains a wing in the Rahway building for those who choose to work at the office. “How do you meet that expense?” I ask, realizing that sales might not cover the salaries of so many scholars. Rabbi Hisiger explains that the Mesorah Heritage Foundation was inspired by Professor Joel Fleishman, who approached Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz, asking how ArtScroll could produce such works at a moderate price. For the price of a dedication, one is able to memorialize a loved one, support Torah scholars and be marbitz Torah l’rabbim. Can there be any better deal? It’s not only in-depth textual learning that ArtScroll provides; it’s inspiration in many forms. Biographies, kosher cookbooks, storybooks, books on Jewish thought… The list is endless. If it’s authentically Jewish and in print, chances are that ArtScroll Publications had a hand in it. Though cookbooks are currently the most popular genre, Rebbetzin Kanievsky remains one of the most popular books of the last decade — a fact soon confirmed in the printing room, where another batch of it is slated for print. Before we head that way, we peek in on the editorial team, the graphics team and the typesetting office. We also see the legendary Rabbi Nosson Scherman, general editor of ArtScroll, who smiles in greeting as we pass his office. Everyone here looks content and happy to be a part of something bigger, part of providing Torah-true literature for Klal Yisroel. In the graphics room, one wall in particular catches my eye and brings a smile to my face, for it’s decorated with spoof book covers the artists designed — a lighthearted way that Eli Kroen, ArtScroll’s art director par

As we exit the offices and enter the printing room — or “the bindery,” as it’s called in ArtScroll land, I’m struck by its cleanliness. It is reminiscent of Costco in size and design, but despite the industrial vibes, the place is practically spotless. We follow Rabbi Hisiger as he weaves among the machines, cheerfully greeting all the workers on shift. They each light up and return the greeting, feeling valued and respected. Soon we reach a room filled with gigantic rolls of paper. Rabbi Hisiger points to one bale, telling me it weighs 500 pounds. Turning around, we see the printing machines, their hungry mouths being fed with streams of white. On the other side emerge what have now become sheimos, the holy words of Torah having appeared, black on white. At the end of the machine sit piles of completed seforim, though lacking binding or cover. These flat sheets still have several more machines to visit. demand requires. The bindery functions 24 hours a day, five days a week, constantly churning out seforim. Despite the sheer number of books being printed, quality control is very important, and each one is inspected carefully before it leaves the warehouse. As we continue our tour, tracing the journey of a sefer, we move from machine to machine. There is a machine that folds the pages and stitches them together, another that attaches a binding, and others that print the cover, fasten it to the cardboard backing, and then emboss it in gold as needed. There is also a machine that slices to size the vinyl that will become the covers of the iconic Hebrew/English seforim. “How much do these machines cost?” I wonder, and Rabbi Hisiger reveals that they’re priced in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. When we arrive at the machine that produces the covers, he notes that this one costs more than a million dollars. Seeing the expenses that go into creating reading material, it occurs to me that the price of printed books is truly justified… One of the most interesting parts of the tour is when we see gloved workers dabbing paint-covered sponges on the edges of unbound Embossing plate seforim. It takes special 168

training to do it perfectly, I am told. And for what purpose are the edges of these Gemaras painted? “Simply for beauty,” Rabbi Hisiger says. After all, learning Torah is a beautiful mitzvah, and learning from a beautiful sefer is certainly hiddur mitzvah. Beauty abounds where there is Torah. Our tour nearly over, we exit the printing room and peek into the wing reserved for the scholars. There are several comfortable and quiet offices here, set aside for those who choose to do their holy work at the ArtScroll building itself. On our way out, we pass through a hallway lined with photos of famous Jewish personalities. I spot Rabbi Nachman Seltzer, Rabbi Yitzchok Dovid Grossman and Rabbi Y.Y. Reinman, among others. “When I came to ArtScroll, I had an idea to interview the people behind the magic here,” Rabbi Hisiger tells me. “Inside ArtScroll,” a program that explores the writers behind the famed ArtScroll volumes, has its own green screen studio where the interviews are recorded. Aside from some props, the entire room is painted a garish green, but that background is swapped out with the help of graphics, leaving the viewer to see only pleasant surroundings. I find it fascinating that ArtScroll, anchored in ancient texts, is so sophisticated and up to date. From its uberclassy offices, to the powerful machinery, to its recording studio, ArtScroll Publications has kept up with the times, making the timeless treasures of the Torah easily accessible to us today. As our tour winds down, my daughter and I see a yeshivah class arriving, bringing fresh-faced youngsters to experience the process of book creation for themselves. Let them be excited, I think. Let them see how the Torah is timeless, spanning thousands of years and thriving here, even in Rahway, New Jersey. And let them, please Hashem, let them be the next devoted link in the chain of transmission. It is for them — and it is for Him — that the ArtScroll empire was built. Vinyl + cardboard = covers

Do you remember when duct tape art was all the rage? You might even have some brightly colored rolls of the sticky stuff left. But the handy guy’s toolbox is still the place most rolls of duct tape call home, because this tape has superhero status in terms of getting things fixed. If you’re a duct tape enthusiast, try collecting glow-in-the-dark duct tape, doublesided duct tape, duct tape craft kits… and of course, duct tape in every color of the rainbow. The Greatest Thing Since Duct Tape It takes a mother’s caring to see the necessity of an invention. Vesta Stoudt had two sons in the army during World War II, and she worked in arms manufacturing. The containers of ammunition she worked on were closed with simple paper tape that could rip, making it hard for a soldier to access his ammo in the middle of a battle. Now, this wouldn’t do for Vesta’s soldier sons. She wanted to create a strong, cloth-based tape that would stick well and open easily for use on the ammunition boxes. She wrote a letter to the president, who made her idea happen, and voila! Soon army-green duct tape rolls were given to every soldier, who found endless uses for the strong tape.

Duck, Duck, Goose! Duct tape was first called duck tape, because water rolled off the waterproof tape “like water off a duck’s back.”
Don’t Do Ducts With Duct Tape It took one guy to find that “duck tape” worked wonderfully on his air ducts for the company to switch the name to duct tape — and change its color to silver, to match the ductwork. Guess what? Today duct tape has been found to be the worst duct sealer out there, so much so that using it on ducts is a building code violation. That’s not to say that duct tape doesn’t seal well — it does! However, it wasn’t built to stand up to the extreme temperature changes that ducts are exposed to. The solution? Aluminum foil tape is recommended instead.

Duct Tape Does it All Duct tape truly is a man-made wonder. Try making a duct tape bridge — yes, it’s possible! The people who tried it found their duct tape bridge was fully usable. You can lift a 5,000 pound car using duct tape; it’s that strong. And NASA keeps rolls of duct tape in outer space to hold things down in zero gravity and in case of emergency. Duct tape has been used to make usable kayaks, canoes, rafts, compasses and slings for wilderness injuries. So wherever you go, whether land, sea or space, make sure your duct tape comes along with you.
Queen of Tape Anna Dominguez is known as the “Queen of Duct Tape” for her prolific duct tape creations. She can make lifelike portraits of people using only colored duct tape as her medium. Some of her tape art has taken over 300 hours to create, and she decorated the windows of the observation deck at 360 Chicago’s 94th floor with a unique duct tape creation. If you want a unique wall-hanging, perhaps a duct tape wall art is the way to go!
The Art of Duct Tape Duck brand duct tape holds an annual duct tape festival, in the Duct Tape Capital of the World: Avon, Ohio, Duck’s hometown. At the festival, duct tape sculptures like a Rubik’s Cube and a bear are exhibited for visitors, many of whom arrive sporting duct tape clothing, of course! Duck also distributes duct tape craft kits to all the guests who show up.
