(Re: FYI, Har Sinai, Issue 135) I read your magazine every week, and I find it a very relaxing, informative and interesting read. The articles are well-written, not too long and to the point. I read with interest last week’s writing about Har Sinai. I always thought that the location is pretty much known. I attached a photo of a stone that purportedly comes from Har Sinai. It is said that when the stone is broken into pieces, there will always be etchings of sorts in the shape of a bush — the sneh. Thanks again! J.B. THE BORO PARK VIEW RESPONDS: While there certainly is a correlation between Har Sinai and the sneh, and there are stones with the image of the sneh in circulation, the precise location of Har Sinai is still not decidedly clear. Rav Yakov Emden writes in Migdal Oz (Zitamar 220b) that he was shown such stones by a Yid from Barcelona. He remarked that it must be a Heavenly phenomenon since when he broke the stone, the image of the sneh appeared on each side of the now-broken stone. The Arvei Nachal comments on this concept as well.

Mitteler Rebbe Reb Dovber, printed in the above-mentioned issue. I’d just like to point out two corrections. One, the story happened on Parshas Ki Savo, not Bechukosai. Two, instead of crying, the young boy’s reaction was to fall so ill that it was doubtful if he could fast on Yom Kippur, which was weeks later. The story is printed in the Lubavitcher Rebbe’s Reshimos (see Toras Menachem Reshimos, p.338/Shin Lamed Ches) and quoted in the Hayom Yom (see entry for 17 Elul). Thank you, Chaya Libman

Dear Fellow Neighbor, Baruch Hashem, the sun is out and we are once again enjoying the outdoors. As a good neighbor who’d love to remain so, I’d like to bring awareness to an issue that’s getting in the way. When your child takes away my child’s bike or bothers or hits him, it is your responsibility as a mother to take care of the matter. Please don’t justify your lounging with “Let the kids figure it out!” If your child doesn’t behave properly when outdoors, perhaps you need to take their hand and go inside with the child. It’s not easy, but it’ll lead to a better, happier summer because your child will know that there are consequences to his behavior. And of course, If you know your child has a tendency to bother other children, no matter the child’s age, please remain outdoors to supervise. A Neighbor

I’d like to extend a huge thank you to the most wonderful organization out there — Chavivim of BP. After an active, excited squirrel entered our storefront in Boro Park and stirred up quite some commotion, a single Chavivim member saved the day. No fanfare, no limelight, no “matzav” — he just rolled up his sleeves, and in a swift motion, managed to get the furry intruder into a professional squirrel cage, which he “happened to have had handy” (how’s that?) in his car. This silent hero did not even linger about waiting for acknowledgement or even a mere thank you. Job done, next customer step down, please. Thanks for coming to the rescue! Mi k’Amcha Yisroel! P.T. In the Beis Hamikdash, the Shechinah would rest behind the shoulders and between the fingers of the Kohanim. This is the reason the Kohanim leave open spaces between their fingers as they raise them upward — to show that Hashem Himself stands behind them. This is also the reason the custom is not to look at the Kohanim during Birchas Kohanim.

“A bracha given under the influence of hakaras hatov carries a special power.” One year later, the unbelievable happened. A baby boy was born to this Yid who had shown such care to the Rosh Yeshivah in his time of need. When Rav Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l, heard about the story, he explained, “No doubt this Yid was helped in the zechus of Rav Yaakov Neiman’s bracha. After all, he is a talmid chacham in the fullest sense of the word. But more than that, you should know that a bracha of this sort — given under the influence of hakaras hatov — carries a special power.” The explanation is simple: If a person receives a favor from his friend, he will certainly have a greater feeling to give in return. His bracha will be absolute and real and delivered with a depth of feeling. Such a bracha is most liable to effect results. * * * * * We can relate this concept to the Kohanim who have been endowed with the opportunity to bless all of Klal Yisroel. In the times of the Beis Hamikdash, the Kohanim were sustained by the gifts of Klal Yisroel — the 24 matnos kehunah. Indebted, they would surely wish to return the benefit they received from their fellow Yidden. Thus their ensuing brachos would be issued from the bottom of their hearts, with a strong will. Loaded with the power of hakaras hatov, the brachos are certainly on a different level. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

Are You Ready To Live Higher? On Tuesday June 21, at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, we will stand with 20,000 fellow women at the historic “Kinus Nshei Klal Yisroel” as we reaffirm our commitment to upholding the kedushah of Klal Yisroel. We will celebrate Living Higher. What Is Living Higher? There is a fundamental difference between thriving and surviving. Surviving means “continuing to live or exist,” while thrive can be defined as “to grow, prosper and flourish.” How come, when so many of us claim to have a goal of thriving, the majority of us are still just surviving? Perhaps it’s fear of the unknown or just our habit. Here’s the exciting part: Just thinking about a life beyond surviving puts us on track to thriving. The first step is to understand that we are living for a purpose. Thriving happens when we have a life of purpose, vitality, and connection with Hashem. When we are proud of our relationship with Hashem, and the work we do to strengthen

76

The Boro Park View

that relationship. This isn’t tied to a specific salary, job title, type of car, or status. Material possessions are not part of the recipe for thriving. It is our connection to our neshamos that allows us to thrive. When we thrive rather than just survive, we are living higher. Our entire existence is on a higher plane. We are happier, feel more fulfilled, and are more successful. Not only are we happier, but our children, our families and loved ones are happier and our future is brighter.

How Can We Live Higher? Every generation has a unique set of circumstances, struggles, and difficulties, specially designed by Hashem’s infinite wisdom as part of His

master plan. We were each placed in our own lives by design, with a personal mission to accomplish. This mission is our primary opportunity to grow and connect with Hashem on a personal level and reflect that growth and connection onto our offspring. Our gedolim have identified the nisayon of technology as the primary mission and opportunity of our generation. Hashem has given us a wonderful gift: a way to grow closer to Him in a way designed especially for our generation. For most of us, this is an entirely new perspective and understanding of what technology is. We tend to think of technology as anything from a necessary evil to a yetzer hara that traps us in its web. But our gedolim are teaching us to broaden our view. The challenge of technology is a great opportunity gifted to us by Hashem Himself as a vehicle for us to grow. We each have areas in our lives that personify greatness, and we each have areas in which improvement is needed. There’s nothing wrong with this; it’s part of the human condition. Some of us will help everyone we can, others would never pass up the opportunity to give some tzedakah. Some of us will be careful about lashon hara, while others daven with great kavanah. On the opposite end, we all have areas where we are not necessarily proud of ourselves. We tend to try and accept ourselves for who we are. Into which category does technology fall? Is our relationship

with our devices one that we are proud of—or one that we accept? Shouldn’t we elevate ourselves and make this an area of personal greatness?

When we thrive rather than just

Unified but Not Uniform

Like the twelve shevatim each following their unique path in avodas Hashem, each community’s leaders, each kehillah and mosad, has fine-tuned their technology guidelines, how and when our technology usage should be conducted. The vast majority of already follow these guidelines, some completely, others to some extent. However, how do we look at these guidelines? Do we feel restricted, restrained, or controlled? Or do we feel privileged, fortunate, and honored that we have this opportunity as the Am Hanivchar — the chosen people to be close to Hashem and live on a higher plane. Of course, each and every one of us, from a young lady fresh out of seminary to a mother and to a bubby, deep down truly desires to grow, thrive, and live higher.

What My Son Taught Me Who would have thought that I would learn this life-changing lesson from my eight-month-old baby? Let me explain… A number of years ago, while my husband was in kollel and I was just back from seminary, the thought of having a smartphone was foreign to us. However, fast forward a few years, and we are both working and need smartphones for our jobs. Of course, we asked our rav, who guided us to TAG, and we had our devices filtered properly. When our son was born, my husband and I both decided we would not allow our baby to watch any videos or have any exposure to technology until he was older.

this historic Kinus in Prudential Center with a common mission and goal: to Live Higher. This historic event is the first of its kind — a women’s-only evening of inspiration that will lift up each participant and empower her to elevate her life and the lives of her family. The program will be innovative and the message revolutionary. Ten years ago, Klal Yisroel united in Citi Field and we stood up to take control of our lives and learn from our gedolim what Hashem wants from us in our generation. Since then, Hundreds of offices have been established around the globe, from various organizations that took on the mission of educating and empowering our communities to utilize the opportunity Hashem gave us for growth and achieve our mission in this generation by living higher and not allowing technology to bring us down and endanger our future. Our gedolim have instructed us that it is time, once again, to spread the important message of the dangers of technology; the damage it can inflict on the entire Klal Yisroel; and how proud we have to feel that we have this unique opportunity to us it as a tool to build our connection to Hashem and brighten the future for our children and grandchildren. This time, our gedolim felt that it is important to address the women and young ladies. The Yiddishe mamas — present and future — who are the greatest influence on our homes and future generations are the ones whom we can entrust with this important charge and responsibility. Tickets are being reserved fast, so do not wait. Reserve yours today from your kehillah or mosad. 78

That was until one sleepless night, after the baby had been crying for hours, my head was pounding. I needed a break. In a moment of weakness, I thought to myself, “What could be so bad about Uncle Moishy?” It worked. My son was calmed; I got a much-needed break. No harm done, right? Well, the next day I was playing with my son in the living room. He had just started to crawl and was slowly learning to make his way across the room. Suddenly, he spotted my phone on the floor and he went for it. With a level of enthusiasm and gusto I had never seen in him before, he lunged for the phone. At first, I was laughing at how cute he was, panting with excitement as he held his newfound prize. But suddenly, it hit me like a ton of bricks and my eyes welled up. What was the allure of this device? What did I do to my son? But really, deep down, I knew that my feelings weren’t about my son — they were about me. In the innocence of a child, I saw myself. I saw myself reaching for my phone first thing in the morning. Yes, before saying “Modeh Ani.” Before saying good morning to my husband, I needed to check it. I saw myself, the moment Shabbos was over, when I couldn’t control my urge to get updated. I realized that it was time to switch off, and switch on some more face-to-face interaction instead. My eight-month-old son taught me that when you are connected to technology, you are disconnected from everything else. Constantly checking my phone when I was with others had reduced the quality of my relationships with the people that I care about most.

Pain at the Pump Continues Even as Months-Long Gas Tax Suspension Begins New York’s long-awaited gas tax holiday went into effect last week, but with prices at an all-time high, filling your tank may still be a daunting prospect. Back in April, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the state would suspend its gas tax through the end of 2022 as of June 1, with an anticipated savings of 16 cents per gallon. According to NBC New York, fuel prices have climbed 15% since that time, significantly diminishing the impact of the gas tax holiday.

Lower pump prices weren’t immediately evident on the first day of the suspension, with some stations holding their prices steady until they received new deliveries of untaxed gas. Disparities remained evident in Boro Park as of Wednesday morning, where according to GasBuddy.com, a gallon of unleaded regular was selling at $5.09 at the BP station on 60th Street and 18th Avenue, and at $4.94 at the Emporium station on 13th Avenue and 65th Street. The differences were even greater just outside of Boro Park with gas selling for $5.25 a gallon at the BP station on 16th Avenue and 86th Street and at $4.85 at the Shell station on 73rd Street and New Utrecht. For those looking to drive a little farther for the cheapest gas price in all of Brooklyn, both a Brownsville 76 and a BedfordStuyvesant Pure Energy were selling unleaded regular for $4.73 a gallon.

Adams Orders NYC Employees Back to the Office Hoping to jumpstart New York’s economy, Mayor Eric Adams called for an end to remote work, ordering all of the city’s 300,000+ employees to come back to their offices. ABC 7 reported that the mayor’s chief of staff mailed a letter to every municipal worker in the Big Apple, which read, “All city employees should be advised that, absent a reasonable accommodation, you are required to work in person for every scheduled workday, and hybrid schedules of any kind are not permitted.” With just 8% of employees in the city currently putting in in-person, five-day work week, Adams has been pushing private employers to insist that their staff return to their desks. According to Fox 5, he reportedly believes that getting city employees back in the office will set an example for others. “How does that look?” queried Adams. “The city employees are home while I’m telling everyone else it’s time to get back to work. When you go to Lower Manhattan with all of those city offices, if they remain empty, Duane Reade is not going to have customers. The café is not going to have any customers.” Despite his insistence on having workers physically present at their jobs, Adams has said that he would consider more flexible schedules in the future.

Local Hospitals Encouraging Virtual Patient Visitation Via Secure Tablet Program Two years after a group of concerned individuals launched a program to facilitate virtual visitation at the height of COVID when patients found themselves cut off from their loved 84

ones, the WellTab free tablet initiative is being actively encouraged at Maimonides Medical Center. As previously reported in The Boro Park View, WellTab offers free paired loaner tablets that are programmed to allow communication exclusively between patients and their families. Not all hospitals were receptive to the idea, expressing concern that the devices could be used to keep tabs on medical staff and might compromise patient privacy. But with the use of personal video devices found to promote better patient outcomes, the New York State Department of Health released a statement in December 2021 directing medical centers to allow the devices, noting, “These visits are essential and contribute to patients’ physical and emotional well-being and care, and must be allowed to the maximum extent possible.” Among the long list of facilities that welcome WellTab is Maimonides, Westchester Medical Center and Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital. At a May 26th meeting with Governor Kathy Hochul in Brooklyn, United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg CEO Rabbi David Niederman applauded the technology, which was created locally to promote patient rehabilitation and recuperation. Rabbi Niederman also thanked Hochul for expanding WellTab’s reach and asked for her assistance in getting additional hospitals on board with the program.

Bill Exempting First Responders From Traffic Violations Clears Senate and House Hatzalah members rushing out on calls may have one less worry on their heads, thanks to a bill that cleared both houses of the state legislature last week, potentially freeing them from being fined for certain traffic violations. Dubbed the “Hatzalah Bill” by its sponsor, Senator Simcha Felder, the legislation would waive monetary penalties for on-call first responders in emergency vehicles who fail to comply with traffic control signals, drive above the posted speed limit or utilize bus lanes. First responders would be required to provide documentation showing that they had been dispatched to attend to a medical emergency, and the bill, if signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul, only applies to incidents in cities with populations greater than one million. The Senate bill and a companion Assembly bill sponsored by Senator Simcha Eichenstein passed by unanimous vote last Wednesday. The legislation comes as a relief to Hatzalah volunteers who often find themselves dealing with traffic violations and penalties incurred on their way to emergency calls. Felder credited Hatzalah members for their never-ending commitment to saving lives. “Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, without a break, nothing stops them from rushing to help in an emergency,” said Felder. “Who would have thought that with all they sacrifice, one of the biggest challenges they face here in New York City is the rising number of camera tickets generating piles of violations on a daily basis?”

C H A P T E R 13 RECAP: Lenny Bergman is a real estate agent with experience dealing with the Polish government. Chaim Simcha asks him how they can establish Zach’s credentials without him having to travel all the way to Poland. Instead, Lenny offers to falsify documents, establishing Chaim Simcha himself as the heir. Discouraged, Chaim Simcha leaves.

“G

et plenty of sleep and liquids,” Dr. Morgenstern advised. “I’ll order a few tests to rule out anything more serious, but it’s almost certainly a virus.” Chaim Simcha stood up and grabbed his jacket. He’d been coughing for a while, off and on, but it had gotten noticeably worse that morning. He’d finally decided to get it checked out. “Thank you.” After his meeting with Lenny, Chaim Simcha had been so exhausted that he’d gone home to sleep immediately after Maariv. Now it was Thursday. Most of the week was gone, and he was no closer to securing the Rebbe’s manuscript. The doctor held out a warning finger. “Just a minute. We need to talk about your weight.” Well, it’s not like he hadn’t seen this coming. Chaim Simcha pointed to his middle. “It’s all in there, don’t worry.”

“That’s exactly why I’m worried,” Dr. Morgenstern corrected. “You’re not in any real danger yet. But you will be if you keep this up. You need exercise. Take a brisk walk, twenty minutes a day. And think about seeing a dietitian, too. Just to get an idea of what you should be eating.” Chaim Simcha gave a thin smile. “You mean like, ‘Eat more veggies and less fat’?” “Less bread and sugar, actually. You have an uncle who was diabetic, remember? Keeping healthy is a mitzvah, too.” “Good point.” Chaim Simcha couldn’t deny that. “Thanks again for your time.” “My pleasure. Have my secretary schedule your follow-up appointment, and we’ll take it from there. Remember: Eat right and exercise!” Five minutes later, Chaim Simcha was walking to his car and trying his best to ignore the unusually frosty weather. It had been snowing for a week already, and they still had a few days until Chanukah.

Which reminded him, he was giving a shiur on the history of Chanukah, and he hadn’t had time to prepare it yet. The zeide had written very little on the subject, but what he had written was fascinating. The avodah of collecting the short pieces from all the Rebbe’s writings had to be done soon. He coughed into his arm and watched his breath mist in the cold. Then, collecting his thoughts, he opened the car door and got in. As he waited for it to warm up, he called Izzy. “Hey, what’s up?” “Hi, Izzy. Just wanted to update you on where we’re up to with the manuscript.” Briefly, Chaim Simcha outlined his meeting with Lenny Bergman. “So,” he concluded as the air from the car vents finally turned hot, “we need a lawyer who can handle international claims. Someone from your firm, maybe?” “I dunno,” Izzy told him. “I’ll have to check.” “Fine. That’s our next step. The sooner the better.” “Will do. FYI, I got a shidduch suggestion recently. Someone should be calling you in the next few days.” Chaim Simcha switched his phone to speaker as he pulled out of the lot. “Great! I’ll be sure to tell them about the hot doggy incident.” Izzy chuckled. when they were little, their parents had hosted sheva brachos for a family friend. Their mother had spent hours preparing hors d’oeuvres for the appetizers: potato bourekas, spinach knishes and franks in blankets — miniature sausages wrapped in puff pastry dough. Unfortunately, none of them had made it to the actual sheva brachos. Little Izzy, aged four, had wanted some of “da little hot doggies.” Stretching his hands up to the counter, he’d pulled the entire platter down to the floor. Both Chaim Simcha and his mother heard the crash, and both arrived to find little Izzy, surrounded by hors d’oeuvres and broken china, crying loudly, and with a miniature frank clutched tightly in each hand. Their mother had served fruit for the first course instead. The only person who ate hors d’oeuvres was Izzy himself. Later, he’d said they were delicious. “That’s a good idea,” Izzy told him.

“She should know straight off not to let me near the kitchen.” “Why? You know how to cook.” “Yeah, but that doesn’t mean I like to,” Izzy shot back. “See you tonight at Maariv.” * * * * *

Chaim Simcha pulled up to the shul a few minutes later, unlocked the door, and got the heat running. Then he entered his office and got started on the Chanukah shiur. He had just found the first mekor when the phone rang. “Hello?” “Rabbi?” “Hello, Morrie. How are you?” Chaim Simcha leaned back in his

and contemplated the giant painting of his great-grandfather hanging on the opposite wall. How would the Rebbe have handled something like this? He would certainly find the nekudas hatov in the boy, find something to praise. And he would be warm, affectionate. But that was the easy part. Chaim Simcha genuinely liked most people, so it wasn’t hard for him to show it, to make folks feel at home. But to inspire? That was the big challenge, right? Everyone needed to hear something different, and a rebbe was somehow supposed to know, respond to those needs, touch neshamos. Maybe it took ruach hakodesh. If so, Chaim Simcha wasn’t up to that madreigah. At least not yet. All he

With his free hand, he grabbed a pen and began doodling on a sheet of paper. “Baruch Hashem, baruch Hashem. I vas just vondering, have you had a chance to talk to my grand-nephew?” Oh, right. That was taka urgent, and Chaim Simcha had forgotten all about it in the craziness. Morrie’s brother’s grandson was struggling in school. His grades were down, his behavior was all over the place. The father didn’t know what to do with him. Morrie had asked Rabbi Ginzburg to speak to the boy. “No, I haven’t had a chance yet. I’ll call the school right now. Thank you for reminding me.” “T’ank you, rabbi! He’s a good boy. He just needs a little hislahavus.” “I’m sure he is.” Chaim Simcha crumpled up the scrap piece of paper and tossed it in the wastebasket. “I don’t know what I’ll be able to do, but I’ll certainly try.” “T’ank you, rabbi!” Morrie repeated warmly, and hung up. Chaim Simcha took a deep breath

could do was talk to the boy. Talk and daven. It was a lot, but it wasn’t always enough. Chaim Simcha was under no illusions about the troubles of today’s youth. He dialed the boy’s father and set up a meeting for the first day of Chanukah. Then, having marked the appointment in his calendar, he turned back to his work. Just in time for the phone to ring. It was his wife on the line. Chana!" he said with as much cheer as he could muster. He really needed to get that shiur finished, but it looked like Hashem had other plans. “Hi. I just wanted to know if you could pick up a few things on your way home.” “Sure.” Chaim Simcha found a piece of paper and took down the list. “By the way,” he said as he finished writing, “I invited Baruch Lichtman for Shabbos.” There was a pause. “Is Izzy coming too?” “Probably. But I haven’t checked.” “Find out, please. If so, you’d better June 9, 2022

CHAPTER

TWO

Recap: An old friar arrives at the monastery in Avila, mute under a vow of silence, bearing a letter from the Inquisition demanding the monastery staff cooperate with him. The friar, Father Miguel Gutierrez, finally speaks, asking whether the prisoner Sebastian Dominguez, the son of Don Pedro, is imprisoned at the monastery.

“Y

es, of course,” said the warden. “We had, his father, Don Pedro, here as well last year before he was moved to the Palace of the Inquisition at Madrid. Who would have believed that they are dirty Jews?” “They are not Jews, Captain,” snapped the old friar. “They were all duly and voluntarily baptized as Christians. That makes them Christians, not Jews. If they behave as Jews in secret, that makes them heretics, not Jews. There is a world of difference between them. Do you understand? They are not accursed Jews.” “Yes, Father, I understand. I stand corrected.” “The members of the Dominguez family are our Christian brothers and sisters, and we want them reconciled to the Church. Don Pedro stubbornly refused to repent. He did not ask to be taken back into the loving embrace of the Church, so he suffered the fate he deserved. Originally, Sebastian was to have shared his father’s fate in Madrid, but the Queen ordered that he remain here. She cares about him because he is her kinsman, and because he was always one of her favorites. She believes he was led astray by his father’s influence, but now that his father is gone, she believes he can be induced to repent and be reconciled with the Church. She is ready to return his titles and estates to him and to extend her protection to his mother, sister and brother. Do you understand?” “Yes, Father, I do. I mean, I really don’t. What are you trying to say?” “I am not trying to say anything. I am saying it. My mission, for the Queen and for Father Rodrigo, is to con-

vince the young man to save his life, his family, and most important, his immortal soul from everlasting damnation. I need your cooperation.” “Of course, Father Miguel. Whatever you wish.” The old friar stood up and gazed around the room. He began to breathe deeply, and a strange, almost maniacal light was kindled in his eyes. He fixed his gaze on the warden and slammed his fist onto the table with such force that the figs jumped out of their dish. “I have fought the Devil all my life,” he hissed between clenched teeth. “I have fought him in my prayers. I have fought him in my devotions. I have fought him in my incantations. I have won some battles and lost others. But this time I will not be denied. The Devil has come too close to the heart of Christendom. These people he has trapped in his snare are not some Portuguese peddlers from Toledo. They are close kinsmen to the royal family. The blood of emperors flows in their veins!” He slammed his fist onto the table again. His breath came in short gasps, and his voice rose to a trembling shout. “By all the saints in Heaven, I will not allow him to gain a victory in this battle! I will not! I will not! He will not win, I swear it! He will not —” The old friar stopped mid-sentence and clutched his chest. The warden leaped to his side and helped him sit down. He poured a glass of water and handed it to him. “Father Miguel, are you all right? You are an old man, and you must take care of your heart. Please drink a little water. You will feel better. You must not agitate yourself, especially not on hot days like these.”

“I don’t want to climb stairs. My knees are sore.” “There are two such rooms right here on the ground level. You can have your pick.” “You choose. It does not matter to me.” “Do you want me to supply the room with food and drink?” The old friar scratched at the stringy stubble on his chin. “Maybe a pitcher of water, some glasses and a hand towel. Nothing else. Except for a chamber pot.” “How much time will you need?” “Hah! A question from the Devil himself. How much time? How much time? A moment? A day? A thousand years? Don’t ask me such silly questions. I will sit with him, and I will go out to give him time to think, and I will come back, and I will wear him down and wear him down until he has no resistance left. Then he will give himself over into my hands, and I will snatch him away from the Devil, and like a precious little THE OLD FRIAR WAVED fledgling, I will bring his HIM AWAY. “I AM NOT sacred soul back to its mother, the holy Church, from AGITATED, YOU SMALLwhich it was torn away.” MINDED LITTLE MAN. “When do you want to start, good father?” MY HEART IS NOT “Right now. calculate how many short ones he could form out of its letters. He would then memorize the number he had found and, some time later, revisit that word and try to equal or better his earlier score. Many times throughout the day, he would spend a few minutes praying to the Almighty. He tried to repeat from memory a few of the psalms he had learned, but for the most part, he composed his own prayers for deliverance and salvation for himself, his father and his entire family in this time of their dire peril. In the evenings, exhausted from his physical, mental and emotional exertions, he would lean back, close his eyes and sing popular Spanish ballads

Deep in the dungeon, Sebastian Dominguez marched back and forth in his small cell. The stone walls were glazed with rancid moisture, and the air was damp and putrid. CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE RECAP: Bassi

wonders if Ariella has gotten tired of babysitting her children, and Sarah reassures her that Ariella is simply trying to make things easier for her parents, who are taking Osher’s absence hard. Reb Elazar sends Osher to expensive safrus lessons. Osher realizes how much Rabbi Reiness is doing for him, and starts to feel hopeful. Bassi’s children go to the Reinesses for Shabbos.

R

abbi Reiness, his students, and his nephews sat around the large table in the carpentry shop, which was miraculously transformed into a beautifully set Shabbos room each Friday. Four-year-old Arik sat quietly, subdued even. His twin, Daniel, had fallen asleep at the table, and only Gadi was singing Yedid Nefesh with everyone else, though at the top of his lungs. “That’s not my father’s tune,” he told Osher when the song wound down. He had stuck to Osher like glue the entire Shabbos. “But did you hear how nicely I sing? It’s because I have a great musical talent, I think.” “Your brother Arik also does,” Osher said. “He was singing before he fell asleep. I heard him.” “Arik? He’s still up. Daniel fell asleep.” “So Daniel, whatever, it doesn’t matter. They look exactly the same.” “Sure it matters. My mother always says that even though they are identical twins, we need to remember that they are not one person.” “Fine.” Osher wasn’t interested in treading on complicated territory. “So it’s Daniel, not Arik, who sings really nicely.” “Besides, they only look alike, but their hand movements and the way they speak are not alike at all. And you know what’s funny, now that I’m thinking about it?”

“What?” “Since the beginning of Shabbos, whenever I talk to you, I’m noticing that you really remind me of someone, with the way you move your hands and the way you talk. You talk with the same tune!” “Me?” Osher laughed. “I remind you of someone? Who?” “Don’t know,” Gadi said, rubbing his cheek. “What?” “I can’t figure out who it is, but when you talk, I feel like I’m hearing someone else speak. I’m trying so hard to remember who it is, but I can’t.”

Something about the taste was familiar and reminded him of home.

“It’s okay.” Osher was ready to pass on the privilege of knowing this crucial secret. He helped himself to another heaping spoon of the cucumber salad that the Bergs had brought with them. Something about the taste was familiar and reminded him of home. The bachurim began singing Mi Ha’ish; they knew that Rabbi Reiness loved old songs. Gadi joined them, and the conversation stopped for the time being. But Osher wasn’t in the mood to sing. He stuck his plastic fork into the last cucumber on his plate and stared down at his plate. “Do you like that?” Gadi asked when the song came to an end. “Do you like cucumbers?” “Why not?” “They taste like…” Gadi grimaced. “So why did you bring something that you don’t even like?” Shlomo, sitting on Gadi’s other side, interjected with a wink. “Oh, only I don’t like cucumbers. Everyone else at home loves them.” “Cucumbers are healthy,” Osher said distractedly. “And this salad is really good. And since there’s no raw onion in there, it’s even better.” Gadi stared at him. “You don’t either like onions in your cucumber salad?” He fixed him with a long gaze. “That’s it! You look like her! I remember now! She also doesn’t like onions, and that’s why she doesn’t put it in.” “Who?” Osher put down his fork. “Ariella, of course. She made this salad before we came, because it’s not nice to come as a guest without bringing something.” Osher eyes grew round and wide. “Ariella?!” “Yes. She’s been watching us since my brother went to the hospital.” “Ariella Erenbaum?” “Erenbaum? No. Her last name is Rothman.” “What do you mean she’s watching you? Ariella comes whenever your mother needs to go to the hospital?” “No,” Gadi said with a laugh. “My mother doesn’t have to go anywhere, because she’s there the whole time! And Ariella is in our house the whole time.” “Does she live with you?” “Yes!” “For how long?”

to regress. Do you understand? They weren’t following you; they were after me!” He chuckled. “And I understand them, by the way. In their place, I would do the same thing. “After that, totally by coincidence, when my wife’s nephew was injured, and the family needed help, my wife suggested to your sister to go live there on the yishuv with the children so she could help take care of them. You know exactly what a remote little hole-in-thewall that place is, right?” Osher didn’t reply. He leaned on the wall, lips pressed together, gripping his backpack tightly. “And what you said about Doron Nachman is nonsense. You are in this room because right now you are the youngest student we have, and you know that I prefer to host the younger students in my house, and not in the dorm. Doron lives here because he’s our security guard.” “So why does he always ask me tons of questions? And follow me, and talk to me, and…” “Because he’s interested in you,” Rabbi Reiness said simply. “He likes you; that’s all.” Osher took a deep breath. “I’m leaving anyway,” he said. “Because even if you’re right, I know one thing: I asked them not to come after me, and Ariella came. I wanted them to let me turn over a new leaf, and they didn’t let me do it! They ruined everything for me.” “Really, Osher?” Rabbi Reiness looked at him. “Are you saying that you didn’t manage to turn over a new leaf? And do you really think that the fact that your sister is five miles away from Acco ruined something for you?” Osher didn’t even hear the words. “Yes,” he insisted. “And I told them that I’ll leave. I told them so! So I’m leaving. Goodbye.” He took three steps and then turned his head back. “And if I’m supposed to be polite, I’ll tell you that overall, it was fine here, so thanks for every-

thing.” And he went down the stairs, his big pack slung over his shoulder. At that moment, Rabbi Reiness deeply regretted that they had not activated the electronic lock on the gate after Shabbos, because with a turn of the knob, Osher released the lock on the inside and stepped out into the street. ***** “Osher! Hey, Osher!” It was Yosef running after him. “What’s going on? Where are you going?” Osher marched on, lips pressed together. “Where’s the station?” he asked after a moment. “What?” “The station. The train station.” “Oh, we’re very close. Make a left, then go straight to the intersection, and you’ll see it. I’ll walk you some of the way; I’m headed in that direction. What happened? I never saw you with this big backpack before. Are you leaving for good?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because. I’m finished here.” Yosef walked half a pace behind him. “You’re finished? You’re finished with my friend?” “Yes. I don’t want to talk to him anymore.” “Maybe I can work things out between the two of you, huh? Tell me what happened.” “Nothing happened. He’ll probably run and send everyone to search for me, but they’ll eventually forget about me. Bli neder, I won’t be back in Acco again.” “Really?” “And my word is my word, even if they all search for me.” “Do you really think he’ll send everyone to search for you? Are you that important to him?” Osher sighed. “I would want to say no, but that would be a lie. Yes, I’m important to him.”

“So, just a second,” Yosef said. “I have an idea for you.” Osher didn’t stop. “Why are you in such a hurry? Come, I’ll take you to the train station in my car, and we’ll talk on the way. I don’t think you understood him so well, my friend. He’s a good man, and I’m sure he didn’t mean for you to leave this way, and —” “I know he’s a good man!” Osher turned around. “But it’s not good for me there anymore, okay?” Yosef tsk-tsked. “Why are you being so stubborn? I’ll explain how to handle him, and you’ll see how good it’ll be for you if you go back.” “He’s not the problem,” Osher hissed. “I’m the problem. And while lots of people have tried to explain to me how to behave, no one really thinks I get it.” “I think you do,” Yosef said, looking right and left. “Listen, Osher, you’re losing out by not listening to what I have to tell you. The station is far away, and I’ll get you there in a minute. And on the way, as a bonus, you’ll hear some words of wisdom.” “You just said the station is very close by.” “Close, far; it doesn’t really matter.” “It matters to me,” Osher said tersely, and he picked up his pace. There was the intersection, and the train station. He pulled out his wallet and thought to himself that if Dr. Kreisman would be standing here now, or Rabbi Reiness, they would not be pleased with the way he spok to Yosef. True, the man was unbelievably annoying and a real busybody, but still… He stopped and turned his head back. “Um… thanks for showing me the way.” Yosef stood a few feet away, playing with his phone. He raised his head to look at Osher, but his expression was inscrutable. Osher forced himself to smile weakly, and then he turned around and crossed the street. To be continued…

DIREC TIONS

1. Saute the leeks and diced onion in the oil until they’re translucent, approximately 10 minutes. 2. Add the vegetables, and saute them for an additional 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Add the tomato paste and spices and saute this for 1 to 2 minutes. 4. Add the water, and bring the soup to a boil. Once boiling, lower the heat, cover the pot, and allow the soup to simmer until the vegetables are soft, approximately 30 minutes. 5. Pulse the soup with a stick blender until half the vegetables are blended.

THE GREAT BIG

PACK

BY: CHANA GLUCK

We lose our sleep and possessions and voices; we gain experience and friends and weight — in camp, that’s where, the best place to be! We wanted to make sense of the “everything but the vanity mirror” that’s supposed to come along, so join us as we speak to the experts: veteran camp-senders, camp-goers, and even the camp mother.

Mrs. Marcus, celebrated camp mother, gets the first say here, because she starts us off before the great, big and wonderful (hair-tearing, tear-duct- and purse-emptying) camp shop. This mother of marrieds and teens speaks to all the mothers out there when she says, “Don’t get carried away by your kids’ friends.” No, really. Stop the frantic label-ironing for just five minutes, and listen to what she has to say. Your daughter is super-excited to be going to camp and is convinced she needs Everything (yes, in proper noun form). Of course, you should get her cute accessories and that hoodie that makes her heart sing, but as Mrs. Marcus says, “Don’t be swayed by everything she says. Girls ask for everything, and it’s up to you to be strong inside and out. Be confident that you can provide your child with all of her needs and some of her wants, and remember that ‘everyone’ isn’t the most accurate yardstick in measuring if, indeed, they will all show up in (insert brand-name) nightgowns. In fact, everyone is probably one store over, having the same argument with their mother, with the same begging-for-my-life expression on her face. In any event, be confident that “whatever you buy is the right thing,” Mrs. Marcus says firmly. “And if you don’t feel shaky, your daughter won’t, either.”

With all that said, meet the crew of camp vets: M R S .

Many girls choose a set of plastic drawers and use cardboard boxes for whatever is left. But are the plastic drawers part of “Everything,” or were they born of necessity? Most camps provide lockers, it seems, but plastic drawers and these work well for camp shelves and lockers. They also do come along for the ride, too. streamline packing and unpacking, so bonus points for that. Mrs. Turner, who is sending her daughter to camp for the fourth summer now, says her teen likes them for the privacy of her personal wear and even plasters the interior with colorful contact paper. “That, I think, is already part of the peer In the time-honored tradition of camp the world over, pressure!” On the other hand, Hindy says that her camp frowns on each person I speak with keeps laundry in a laundry sack and campers bringing drawers. “Our camp’s too small for it,” she packs much the same medium to launder with: detergent says. “That must’ve been the reason.” (Mrs. Samuels finds detergent pods fantastic) and stain-reInstead, each girl gets a closed nightstand with two draw- mover. MRS. TURNER AN ITEM SENT BUT NEVER USED:

daughters directly from Target and Walmart after packing up half their house! PACKING HACK:

Fold all clothes in boxes, and take hangers separately; roll linen into the laundry sack; pack drawers full, and tape them shut.

in and out. Chavie, who’s been to sleepaway and travel camp, says the caddies are super important and everyone should use them. Seri, however, cracks me up when she says she now uses a waterproof knapsack. “The caddy never worked for me. Either my stuff fell out, or the thing collected a few inches of water. I adopted the idea of the waterproof briefcase, and that’s it. Clothing in the middle, in the zippered compartment, and soaps and stuff in the drink-bottle pockets on the sides. I just love it.” As for toiletries and what to keep them in, that’s a slightly puffy topic. Seri hooked a cosmetic roll onto her bed and kept her hair and toothbrushing accessories in different pockets. Mrs. Turner thinks that cosmetic bags are coming straight from the “Everything” category, while Mrs. Grossman of the eight girls — one of whom is still attending camp — says her daughters always had nice bags for their toiletries and cosmetics. “Does that make them spoiled?” she wonders. Mrs. Samuels’ daughter, when asked about a cosmetic bag, said, “Ma, I can put my stuff in a plastic bag!” I’d call that kid to balance my budget.

LABELED WITH CARE There seem to be three options: label, sticker, stamp. And also a fourth: markers. Admit that there’s something powerful about waving that inky wand and impressing your permanent scrawl with abandon! Mrs. Turner, like many others, ironed labels onto all clothes and stickered the non-clothes, while Mrs. Samuels stickered everything. Chavie’s mother, on the other hand, wrote her name on everything in marker or pen. Mrs. Grossman did mostly sew-ons (“The kids handed me one item after another; it went one-two-three”) and also labeled and stamped items all and sundry. 134

and of course, chocolate. Mrs. Grossman’s girls were into cereals, and some took flavored noodle soup cups while others bought pastries to go. And — back in the day — they took punch mixes. Anyone remember those? “When I was in camp myself,” Mrs. Grossman says, falling into sweet reminiscence, “there was a weekly truck from Williamsburg. Our mothers would send us packages every Erev Shabbos with babka and bilkelach. That taste of home… nothing like it.” For lack of the fabled truck, Mrs. Grossman delivers her baked goods on visiting day. Chavie freely admits to having a big nosh box with a large range of foods. “I did cereals, snacks, nosh and cakes. When I got older, I appreciated tuna and crackers, too.” Hindy took a full cardboard box. “Lots of sweets for at night, and crackers, tuna, noodle soup and Snapple.” Breindy liked breaking out the real junk. “I bought stuff I didn’t eat all year, and milk chocolate. I also took regular things, like snacks and cookies that are not super sweet. At one camp we had a little kitchenette, so I brought apples and oranges. I also made my mother’s famous strawberry ices. I took the mixture in a container, and poured it into molds to freeze in camp.” Seri took her nosh in a plastic bin. “The size people use to store toys?” I verify. “Yeah,” she confirms. “I mean, my friends had bigger ones. Mine was the smallest.” She took “normal food” like tuna, melba toast and squeeze mayo (“We mixed our tuna in Ziplocs”), plus tons of chocolate, snacks and sweets.

Mrs. Turner, Mrs. Grossman and Mrs. Samuels, however, say that the cards are a thing of the past by now. The girls can call home just like that. “But you can call home only at specific times, and the lines are enormous,” says Mrs. Turner. “My daughter always managed to make the right friends on staff and wheedle their cells from them to call me.” Apparently, it’s not what you know; it’s whom you know.

After all is said and done and paid for, it seems that camp breeds expenses; after all, there are trips, tips, detention (!) and such. What about money designated solely for the camper to use at her discretion? How much canteen money do parents send? Mrs. Turner sent $100. No change, she said. Her daughter needed a refill, too. Mrs. Samuels sent $40 or $50, and her daughter came home with most of it. “She decided that the canteen was too expensive and that she can buy ice cream at home for half the price. She did buy a water bottle once.” Mrs. Grossman says her husband took care of the financials, and Chavie isn’t a big spender — she usually comes home with extra cash. 140

our words that sang a beautiful melody to me every Friday afternoon in camp were, “The mail truck is here!” My ears waited eagerly on high alert for the mike to crackle with that message. Off I’d run to the office, and still breathing hard, I'd rummage through the packages at breakneck speed. Then I’d head back to my room with a bounce in my step and a flutter in my heart, carrying my beloved brown box aloft like an Olympic trophy. When I was growing up, the majority of people I knew struggled financially, as did my family. Perhaps our budget was even tighter than most. I was not resentful about this at all, just accepted it as a matter of fact. My siblings and I, sensitive to our parents’ inability to provide extras, wouldn’t even ask for afikoman presents. Our feelings of respect and pride in my parents’ chesed and wisdom, along with the warmth and happiness in our home, compensated for our lack of material possessions. Hugging that box in camp, however, a box lovingly packed by my mother and carefully taped by my father, was one of the isolated times I felt rich because of something concrete I owned. (Wearing a Shabbos dress my sister sewed for me was another one of those times.) The box oozed love. My mother worked in a non-air-conditioned place, traveled home on a non-air-conditioned subway, then baked in an non-air-conditioned kitchen and shopped on the overheated streets for items we needed or requested. Attending sleepaway camp from the now unimaginable age of five, my memory of these care boxes dates back to about when I was

nine or ten years old. Although clueless then to the extent of my mother’s selflessness, her heart packed into the box hit me full force week after week, summer after summer. The box contained homemade bilkelech and cake, oranges and peaches (hard ones, as I insisted), two cans of soda for the Shabbos seudos, and my clean laundry, which my mother would wash for me. (How this worked would need a long explanation.) Then there were the random things I requested: a new bathing cap, more hangers, a cream for my rash, and more stamps. What about the nosh, you ask? Nosh was practically nonexistent. Potato chips, popcorn, pretzels and sometimes licorice were the extent of it. More elaborate nosh was not even a speck in my mind’s wish list. But the box held something more precious and delicious than any sweets. The crowning glory of the package was the letter! Each summer Thursday night my mother would sit at her typewriter (in a non-air-conditioned room, of course), slip a carbon paper between two pages, and begin to pound away. The letter’s salutation was Dear Children, and it was addressed to my sister and me as well as to my brothers — hence the carbon paper. I would dance into my bunkroom, rip open the box, grab the sheet of paper and practically swallow it whole. The world was mine as I’d read a full page of newsie news (who got engaged, who had a baby), delightful advice (what to eat before the fast, how to get along with others, even how to swim), interesting tidbits (blackouts, burglaries, and Israeli Ambassador to Turkey Efraim Elrom, who was killed by terrorists, was an Israeli spy agent!) and loving admonitions (make sure to play sports; boys, why don’t you write?; change your socks more often). The bottom of the page never failed to have a Yiddish handwritten note added on lovingly by my father, expressing his longing for us, entreaties to eat and sleep well, and his warmest wishes. My mother was a born and bred American whereas my bunkmates were children of Holocaust survivors times two. Getting a typewritten letter in English was totally out of their reach. Each week, as I shared the letter’s contents like a wealthy man dispensing coins, every fiber of my being knew that I was fortunate to receive this treasure. And the fact that a letter came along with the box of goodies raised it to a skyscraper-high level of joy. I do not recall whether other campers received letters in the mail from their parents, or even packages. My memories begin and end with my box from home enriching my summer experiences. So if you want to convene a jury to deliver a verdict on whether summer camps should ban boxes from home, please count me out. My memories of those boxes and letters of love would render me the most biased juror.

The phone booth is the ubiquitous camp fixture, a time warp of sorts. And it’s home to the pay phone, another relic of the past that’s still hanging around!

Necessity Is the Papa of Pay Phones “Please! My wife has taken ill!” After phones were invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1876, they were a luxury found in only the wealthiest homes. When inventor William Gray’s wife fell ill, he had to run to a nearby factory to call for help. There, he was forced to beg to use their telephone. The terror and desperation Gray felt during those moments inspired him to create his crowning achievement: the pay phone.

Honor on the Line The Pay Phone Goes Public In 1889, a bank in Hartford, Connecticut (Gray’s home state), was honored with the installation of the very first pay phone. In 1911, the more modernized Model 50A was introduced to the public. It was patented by the company William Gray founded, alongside Western Electric, a division of AT&T. Within a year of its debut, there were over 25,000 50As in NYC alone!

Gray’s first patented pay phone allowed callers to speak first and pay later, with a post-pay honor system. Since all calls in those days went through an operator (yes, it was a real person, and quite a common occupation for women back in the day), the operator would tell the caller how much they owed. The coins hit a bell when they were deposited, and according to the sounds, the operator would know if the customer’s payment was sufficient.

Free ICE (In Case of Emergency) Pay phones allow free calls to 911 emergency services, as well as to 311 — a hotline where people can report problems or ask questions. In the event of another pressing call with no handy cash, collect calls are a great option. Just press zero for the operator.

By: Sara Scharf

Generation Alpha Most people these days have their own cell phones, so you would think that pay phones are obsolete, right? Er, not quite. As many as 7,500 were repurposed into hotspots and charging stations. What’s more, according to the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), there are actually 100,000 pay phones in operation in the United States! They are mostly in use in areas without cell phone or landline coverage.

Drop a Nickel in the Slot... Gone are the days of jumping onto the trolley for five cents or using a nickel to call home. But that was the norm until the mid-1950s! After that, the price doubled to ten cents until the mid-1980s. The twenty-five-cent standard was set in the mid-1980s, and it lasted until the early 1990s. Nowadays, pay phones can cost upward of 50 cents per call.

Chatterboxes The pay phone gets a home! Broiling under the summer sun or being exposed to rain and snow while dialing was nobody’s idea of fun. Nor was the fact that conversation was fair game to any and all passersby. (Hmm… sound familiar?) In the early 1900s, outdoor phone booths joined the street scene. By the 1950s, these booths were mighty popular!

In Striking Red Uniform Those Brits are really fond of distinctive dress! London’s iconic red telephone booths, or “K2 phone boxes,” are easy to spot, thanks to their bright crimson color and the perforated Tudor crown displayed on the top (it was actually a discreet source of ventilation). They were designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1926. Their history and tourism significance make them highly treasured landmarks; some are even protected under English law.

History Reinvented Ever heard of the “modern telephone booth”? It’s just what you would imagine. These sleek compartments are the latest in office furniture, providing privacy in the workplace and a cozy, soundproof space for your cell conversation. Sounds like the perfect place to talk to the shadchan! They’re pricey, though, with retail starting at approximately $4,400 and easily passing the $10,000 mark. The price of privacy…
