(Re: Rolls and Dips, Issue 143) I’m writing these words of appreciation with the divine taste of the onion rugelach still lingering in my mouth, though I’m not giving out the amount of rugelach I consumed. Leah Stern’s recipes always hit the mark! I was wondering if it’s possible to make these delicious treats in a mezonos version. Many lovers of onion rugelach would appreciate that. (Although it may backfire, since we will eat them way too easily…) An Avid Fan LEAH STERN RESPONDS: For a mezonos version, the water can be replaced with apple juice. Slightly warm up the apple juice before pouring it over the yeast, and cut the sugar amount by a bit to offset the sweetness.

Just for the record, those of us who are of Galician descent have a mesorah to take challah with a bracha for as little as 2 pounds and 13 ounces of flour. Each pound of all-purpose flour amounts to approximately 31/3 cups, which means that if I bake that recipe even without doubling it, I would still take challah with a bracha. Shira Weiss

Which is the right measurement? Also, according to my knowledge, challah has to be taken without a bracha for even for 2½ pounds of flour.

Last year, in our neighborhood, the younger girls got together before chatzos, and a post-seminary girl was hired (parents gave $5 per child) to come give an interactive shiur about Tisha B’Av to the group. Baruch Hashem, it was a tremendous success. While many neighborhoods have day camps and activities arranged for later in the day, it is so meaningful when even younger girls can get a true feeling of what Tisha B’Av is all about. A short while before Moshe Rabbeinu passed away, he gathered Klal Yisroel to review the halachos and events from the course of their 40-year journey from Mitzrayim to Eretz Yisroel. The first pasuk lists interesting words that don’t seem to have much meaning. Rashi, citing the Midrash, states that each word alludes to a different failing of Klal Yisroel in a way that protects Klal Yisroel’s honor. “Bamidbar” — Klal Yisroel angered Hashem by complaining about being in the Midbar; “b’aravah” refers to the sin of the Ba’al Peor; “vachatzeiros” alludes to the machlokes of Korach; and “di zahav,” hints at the Cheit Ha’egel (Devarim 1:1). Why did Moshe Rabbeinu speak in riddles? Now, just before his petirah, wouldn’t it be the right time to reprimand Klal Yisroel outright? Wouldn’t direct mussar be more powerful? FOR HEALTH REASONS, Reb Yehoshua Leib Diskin, zt”l, used to drink his tea with lots of sugar. One day, as he was delivering his shiur, his assistant brought him a glass of tea. By mistake, he had taken from the container of salt instead of sugar. And knowing that sugar was important for the Rav, he put in a generous serving of what he thought was sugar. Reb Yehoshua Leib drank from the glass as if nothing was unusual, without a wince. Suddenly, the rebbetzin ran into the room, hysterical. “Where is the tea?” she asked the talmidim. “I see that the assistant put in salt instead of sugar… and that’s poison for the Rav!” The talmidim replied, “The tea had sugar, as usual.” “How do you know?” she asked. “Well, the Rav drank the tea as he does every day, with no reaction.” The rebbetzin went over to the glass and took a lick. salty. “You see,” she said, distraught, “just as I said, it’s full of with salt!” The next day, the talmidim asked Reb Yehoshua Leib how he had downed the entire glass if he knew it was pikuach nefesh for him. “Had I shown the slightest reaction, the person who prepared the tea would have been publicly humiliated. He spoke with the boy, who agreed to mend his ways. As the friend accompanied Rav Shach back to the beis midrash, he couldn’t contain his curiosity and asked, “Why did the Rosh Yeshivah insist on coming all the way to the dormitory rather than calling the boy up to the beis midrash to the Rosh Yeshivah?” “I realized,” Rav Shach replied, “that given the situation, it would be embarrassing for the boy to be called to speak with me, in front of everyone. I decided to make the extra effort to spare the boy the shame, and I hoped that in this zechus, I would have extra siyata d’Shmaya in touching his heart.”

On their way to Yerushalayim, the Romans killed out the entire heavily populated city of Beitar.

True, Bar Kamtza may have been humiliated, but was he justified for taking revenge against all of Klal Yisroel due to his personal fight with one individual? Indeed, Bar Kamtza was no tzaddik. He was downright wicked. And with this perspective, we can imagine that we may have done the same thing as the host had we been seated alongside such a rasha. It seems that the host who threw him out actually did a good thing by sending this lowlife from his table. Why did this incident cause the Churban? This may be the way we look at it, but the Gemara (Gittin 57a) looks at it differently. “Come see how great is the power of humiliation — Hashem even helped Bar Kamtza, and destroyed His home [because of it].” Reb Chaim Shmuelevitz said that when one hurts another, he isn’t toying with punishment — he is playing with fire. When a fire rages, it burns without discretion, without making particular sense. Similarly, when Hakadosh Baruch Hu sees one being shamed, He takes the side of the shamed party, even if it makes no sense, and even if that person is in the wrong. * * * * * The Yalkut Shimoni explains that Moshe Rabbeinu held that if he were to rebuke Klal Yisroel directly, he would be embarrassing them, which would cause him to lose his portion in Olam Haba. He therefore chose to allude to their misdeeds instead. Interestingly, Moshe was not even speaking to the generation that had sinned — they had already passed on! Moshe was speaking to their children, and still, he feared reprimanding them openly in case he would lose his Olam Haba. This was after being their faithful leader, and the one to give over the Torah to Klal Yisroel. Still he worried that he would lose his share! In the zechus of our strengthening ourselves in ahavas Yisroel, may we be zoche to the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash speedily in our days.

Proposed New Sanitation Schedules To Include Shabbos Exemption
Maimonides Medical Center has become a topic of discussion over the past few weeks, with media outlets running large ads from two different groups, with some touting the hospital’s stellar track record, while others invited the public to share stories of mistreatment at the communal medical facility. A Hamodia interview attempted to shed light on the matter, with parties on both sides speaking out on current conditions at Brooklyn’s largest hospital. According to Save Maimonides co-chair Mendy Reiner, the hospital has declined over the years and isn’t properly serving area residents because of staffing shortages, while hospital officials have taken salary increases in the millions since the advent of COVID. Reiner said that the campaign has gotten over 1,200 calls and hundreds of emails from people sharing stories of 72-hour emergency room waits for a hospital bed, being placed in the wrong department or on the incorrect floor, a lack of air conditioning, and a serious nursing shortage stemming from mismanagement. But Maimonides president Ken Gibbs told Hamodia that hospitals nationwide are facing financial challenges, particularly when it comes to reimbursements. He rejected the notion that the hospital is providing a subpar level of care, saying that Maimonides’ last-place patient satisfaction rating in the state is comparable to that of other urban hospitals when it comes to wait times and other factors. Gibbs also attributed the hospital’s failure to meet its “staffing objectives” to a national nursing shortage, with 200 full-time nurses hired over the last nine months. Reiner said that Save Maimonides’ ultimate goal is improving the quality of patient care, which would include financial oversight and bringing in independent consultants to get the facility back on track. “My only goal is to bring in competent people to help the hospital,” said Reiner. “I have no ill feelings toward Ken Gibbs. I have no ill feelings toward the board or any others. I just feel that the bottom line is patients are suffering at Maimonides. We are not getting a hospital we could be getting.” Acknowledging that patient experiences at Maimonides are a work in progress, Gibbs emphasized that the hospital offers “superb” medical care and said that he found it unfortunate that Save Maimonides is mounting what he described as “a political attack with misinformation.” “The good news is that we continue to provide the care every day, and we intend to continue to serve people every day, from all these communities with that same heart, and that same effort, whatever gets thrown at us,” said Gibbs.
A potential plan to limit the amount of time trash sits out on city streets by having residents and businesses put out their garbage four hours later than usual will include provisions to accommodate the city’s Shabbos-observant population. With New York City streets smelling less than fragrant and an increase in the number of rats roaming the Big Apple, Mayor Eric Adams and Department of Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced a clean streets initiative last week that would only allow trash to be placed at the curb after 8 p.m. DSNY spokesman Josh Goodman explained that the current 4 p.m. trash schedule has millions of pounds of recycling and garbage hitting streets right at the start of the evening rush hour, reported Boro Park 24. “It stays out, serving as a nightclub for rats and other pests until it’s collected,” said Goodman. “Well soon, we’re going to try to shut the clubs down.” Allowances would be made for trash placed in bins with secure lids, which could be taken out as early as 6 p.m. But both of those times could prove problematic on weeks when Shabbos starts earlier than the DSNY’s scheduled trash time. Boro Park 24 reached out to Goodman who said that an exception would be made for shomer Shabbos residents of the five boroughs, if the plan is approved. The change would be subject to a public comment period and could take up to six months to go into effect. The sanitation department has already made changes to get trash off the streets earlier, with 5 million tons picked up each night on midnight runs that continue until 8 a.m., with a second shift running from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. The city has allocated $22 million to install covered rat-proof trash cans in

Speed Cameras To Run 24/7 in the City That Never Sleeps Nighttime speeders who took advantage of city speed cameras shutting off at 10 p.m. may be in for a rude awakening now that those same cameras will be photographing violators around the clock as of this week. Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation in late June that expanded speed camera operations, which previously stayed on only on weekdays from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The new law, a concerted effort to promote safety, remains in effect until July 2025. According to Gothamist, speed cameras have significantly reduced reckless driving in the five boroughs, with violators receiving $50 tickets for traveling 10 miles an hour or more over the posted speed limit. Officials reported that one third of all fatal crashes in 2020 took place in school zones at times when the cameras were turned off. Mayor Eric Adams dismissed the idea that the speed cameras serve as a money-maker for the city. “Some people thought cameras were a way of being punitive when it was not,” said Adams. “It was a deterrent. Because once you got that ticket, you’re not going to do it again.” City officials say the facts support Adams’ assessment, with most violators receiving just one or two tickets, choosing to slow down instead in order to avoid additional fines.
Popular Sunscreen Voluntarily Recalled Because of Possible Cancer Risk The discovery of trace amounts of a cancerous ingredient has prompted a nationwide recall on a well-known brand’s sunscreen product. The Food and Drug Administration announced that the Edgewell Personal Care Company issued a recall on its Banana Boat Hair & Scalp Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 on July 29. Several batches of the product were found to contain small amounts of benzene, which can cause cancer. The recall affects only the six-ounce aerosol can of Banana Boat’s hair and scalp formula with expiration dates of December 2022 (lot code 20016AF), February 2023 (lot code 20084BF), and April 2024 (lot code 21139AF). The product is being removed from store shelves, and consumers who have that sunscreen are urged to discard it immediately and to contact Edgewell Personal Care regarding reimbursement at 888686-3988 or online at www.bananaboat.com. According to the FDA, the benzene came from the propellant used in the aerosol spray and was not part of the actual product formulation. The Banana Boat website advised consumers that the recall, initiated out of an abundance of caution, does not affect any batches of its product other than those listed above and that it has received no reports of any problems linked to this particular issue. 58

C H A P T E R 21 RECAP: Lenny Bergman is sick of chasing get-rich-quick schemes and resolves to change. After a meaningful davening in the Lodzer shtiebel, Zach and Izzy discover that the gabbai knew their great-grandfather.

hulem!” Velvel called. A man in his late seventies turned just before leaving the shul. “Yoh?” Velvel gestured at Izzy. “Er iz an einekel fun Reb Menashe!” His voice, thick and soft though it was, carried easily through the room. Everyone still inside turned to look at them. Shulem’s face lit up. “Shalom aleichem!” He rushed to them and grasped Izzy’s hand eagerly. The people at the door also came back and surrounded the travelers. “My zeide was Reb Velvel,” Izzy explained. “Reb Menashe’s son, Reb Velvel, I mean. Not you,” he added to the gabbai. “Avadeh,” Velvel said with a dry laugh. “The Rebbe Reb Menashe was here until the bitter end,” Shulem told them heavily. “My parents got out earlier, though. The Rebbe helped them escape.” The man took Izzy’s hand and stroked it gently with a faraway look. “If not for the Rebbe, they would have been killed too, along with…” He looked away and took a moment to pull
himself together. “Your zeide saved them,” he said finally. “I wouldn’t have been born if not for him.” Izzy smiled awkwardly, not sure how to respond to all of that. He had done nothing for this man. It was his great-grandfather who had saved Shulem’s family. But the old man didn’t seem to care. He was filled with gratitude as he stared at Izzy in wonder. “Baruch Hashem…” Izzy mumbled. “They named me after him,” Shulem added. “My full name is Menashe Shulem. I was born after the Rebbe had already been taken to Shamayim.” “I bet you could probably tell us some great stories, though,” Izzy said, glad to change the subject. “Things you heard from your parents.” He turned back to Velvel. “And you must have some great maasim you saw personally.” Velvel nodded slowly. “I was very young. But I remember some things.” The old man stopped to remember. Something like a shy smile spread across his face. “I was…

There wasn’t any real worry. But the Rebbe didn’t live so close. By the time I came back to tell him, davening was almost over. The tzibbur got to daven in peace, I got to feel special. You see? He even gave me a treat to thank me for my good work.” “Beautiful. I wish I could have met him. You know,” Izzy mused, “back in New York, my brother is trying to rebuild the chassidus. He’s collecting stories from the Rebbe. Maybe you can sit down with me for a bit, so we can record what you remember?” Velvel eyed him suspiciously. “Why New York? Why not rebuild here?” “Genug, Velvel,” someone murmured. Izzy turned around and was surprised to see one of the younger men talking. “Lodz is our past. The future is America. We all know that.” “America is no better than Lodz,” Velvel snapped. “Narishkeit,” the fellow continued. “Yiddishkeit thrives there while we barely have a minyan!” Without warning, the old man seemed to erupt. “You think America won’t throw them out one day? You think they’re such tzaddikim there? Ha!” “Of course they won’t,” someone said with a snort. “Of course,” Velvel snarled. “Velvel, don’t,” the younger man warned gently. But it was too late. Velvel’s old eyes blazed as he rolled back a sleeve. The

Recap: After narrowly escaping death in their daring trip over the water, Gonzalo and Sebastian are welcomed to Tangier by the British as an “enemy of the enemy.”
N
early a year passed before Sebastian and Gonzalo arrived in Paris. The French government had been reluctant to allow them entry into France. Repeated petitions by the Spanish government and by the Holy Office of the Inquisition for the return of the fugitives only reinforced the disinclination of the French to open their doors. In the meantime, Sebastian and Gonzalo remained marooned in Tangier, fighting boredom and flies. They survived on the money Gonzalo had brought with him and on whatever they could earn through their enterprise and ingenuity. In the end, an impassioned personal appeal by Dona Angelica to King Louis XIV finally secured the permission for her son’s entry into France. The reunion of the family was bittersweet. Their idyllic life in Madrid was nothing more than a remote memory. Don Pedro was dead, and Sebastian had languished in prison for over a year and in Tangier for another. The family was broken and impoverished. Yet at the same time, it was an exceedingly joyous moment. The oldest son had returned to take his rightful place as the head of the family. Things would be better from now on. They couldn’t very well get much worse. Sebastian had visited Paris a number of times together with his family, and the city brought back many fond memories. A few generations earlier, one of Sebastian’s grandmothers had intermarried with a member of the royal family, and this had made the family rela-

tively close cousins with many of the kings and queens of Europe. As a princely family connected to the Hapsburg bloodlines, they always enjoyed the most luxurious accommodations in Paris. Expense was never an issue. Somehow, Sebastian had not imagined different circumstances for his mother who was living in Paris under the protection of the French King. Pampered child of the Spanish nobility, it had never occurred to him that it might be otherwise. But otherwise it was. Dona Angelica lived with her daughter Carolina and her son Felipe in a small house on the Rue Parmentier, which was quite far from the royal palace at the Louvre and the glittering magnificence of the surrounding boulevards. The house had three small bedrooms, which meant that Sebastian would have to share a room with Felipe, and Gonzalo would have to find lodgings of his own. There was one tiny servant’s room, occupied by a dour Norwegian woman who doubled as cook and housekeeper. There was also a small stipend for food and other basic expenses. In order to augment the meager family income, Carolina became a Spanish tutor for the children of a wealthy merchant, and Felipe found employment cataloging the personal library of one of Don Pedro’s kinsmen. Sebastian found Angelica in a desperate state of mind. The family did not seem to be in mortal danger anymore, but they could not yet move on to a place like Amsterdam, with its large and flourishing community of
Jews from Spain and Portugal and a government that granted them rights almost equal to those enjoyed by the gentiles. They still needed the protection of the King and his assistance in recovering any of their properties and possessions outside Spain. In the meantime, they were penniless, and daily living was an endless struggle with no relief in sight. Furthermore, she was worried about her children. Carolina was already 24 years old. She needed to get married, and her prospects were limited. She had to marry someone of a similar background, someone from a family of conversos who had reverted to Judaism. Most of these people who were like them originated in Portugal or in the Portuguese enclaves in Spain; there were hardly any secret Jews of Spanish descent remaining in Spain. However, the Portuguese communities were deeply involved in commerce. Most of their members were prosperous or even wealthy, and they would expect a sizable dowry. Where would Dona Angelica find a dowry for her glorious, effervescent Carolina? And then there was Felipe: 21 years old, bright, intelligent, articulate, charming, and with such beautiful manners. What kind of future awaited him? He could not find employment fitting his station, because after all, he was a Jew or at least a heretic. So he was reduced to being a librarian. How the mighty had fallen. The only bright spots in their lives, and especially in Felipe’s life, were the periodic visits of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Strasbourg who lived in the city of Metz on the edge of the Duchy of Lorraine, some distance to the east. The Jews of Metz had been expelled in 1365, but when the French had taken possession of the city in 1567, they had allowed Jews to settle there once again. A large Jewish community had sprouted in Metz during the century after their return. Now Rabbi Strasbourg studied with Felipe whenever he came to Paris. These sessions were the highlight of Felipe’s life, and he had expressed a desire to seek employment in Metz and send money to his family. Perhaps, thought Dona Angelica with a deep sadness, that would be for the best. A few days after Sebastian arrived in Paris, Rabbi Strasbourg arrived to make his acquaintance. “My mother has told me about you, Rabbi Strasbourg,” said Sebastian. “We are grateful for everything you have done for our family, especially for Felipe.” “You are very kind. I consider it an honor and a privilege to help your family. But before we go on, let’s establish one thing. You can call me Mendel, if you will allow me to call you Sebastian.” Sebastian shook his head. “I can’t call a rabbi by his first name.” “Then you can call me Reb Mendel. That is a customary honorary title among Ashkenazi Jews. And if you wish, I can call you Reb Sebastian.” “No, Sebastian will be fine… Reb Mendel.” “Excellent,” said Reb Mendel. “Has your mother also told you the nature of my connection to your family?” “Not really. She said it has something to do with my father. She started telling me, but then she said that since you would be coming very soon, she would let you tell me.” “All right. You know that your father spent two years in Poland when

Do you know where he was?” “Yes, I certainly do know,” said Reb Mendel. “He was in a place called Pulichev. And the rabbi with whom he studied is Rabbi Shlomo Strasbourg. That rabbi is my father. Some people call him Rabbi Shlomo Pulichever, because that is where my family has served as rabbis for generations, but our family name is really Strasbourg, after the city in which we lived until its Jewish community was destroyed.” “Destroyed? What do you mean?” “There was a terrible plague back then that killed half the population of Europe, maybe more.” “Yes, I know,” said Sebastian. “The Black Death of 1348.” “Yes, that’s the one. People blamed the Jews. In Strasbourg, a few hundred Jews were herded onto a platform and burned alive. The rest were expelled. My family was fortunate to be among those who were expelled.” “That is very sad.” “It is truly sad, Sebastian. And it is the story of our People for over a thousand years. The world measures heroism by feats of valor on the battlefield and other acts of a similar nature. But I think there is nothing more heroic than the devotion of our people to the A-mighty and His Torah despite all the persecution we have suffered. It would have been so easy to just give it all up and blend in with the rest of the world. We could have spared ourselves so much pain and suffering. But we remained loyal and steadfast. Even in Spain, where our people gave in outwardly rather than be killed or expelled, so many risked their lives by remaining faithful Jews in the privacy of their homes. You are a true hero. Your father was a true hero. Your mother is a true heroine. They had everything a person could desire in this world — rank, honor, wealth, a beautiful family. And they put it all in jeopardy for the sake of their faith.” Sebastian felt his eyes grow moist. “Thank you so much. You know, when my father first told us about who we really were, I was excited. It was such a romantic notion. Imagine, in addition to everything I already had, I now had a secret faith. It was very exciting, at least to me. I had a sister — Isabel, may she rest in peace — who was crushed by the revelation. I think her reaction was more in touch with reality than mine. But I have come to appreciate the harsh reality of who I am. CHAPTER SIXTY-NINE RECAP: While
walking in isolation, Elazar Reiness thinks of a great shidduch idea: Effy Kreisman for Osher’s sister Ariella. Eventually, Rabbi Reiness makes it to a road, where a taxi driver finds him and brings him home. But it is already dark; the day of the longawaited meeting is over.

eep pain. Plain joy. Intense fury. Was it possible to be feeling all three of these emotions together, like a trio of grapes on one vine? “Rebbi, let us drink a l’chaim that you were saved.” A very late Maariv had just ended. A few bachurim brought out a bottle of liquor, opened a table, and ordered pizza. Rabbi Reiness smiled, wondering if it reached his eyes. “Sure,” he said, “but I only drink grape juice.” Borei pri hagafen. L’chaim. How sweet and juicy is the grape as its flavor spills out, much like the gratitude he felt spilling out in his heart for his safe homecoming. There were a few moments during the past day when he hadn’t been sure that the story would end quite like this… And with it was that deep, tart pain, and the tremendous void that the abandoned lot had left in Yitzchak Shikovitzer, z”l, a loss that had been transferred to his own father, who did not merit to do anything about it. And he, Elazar, was continuing on the path of both of these men. He had not merited to get the land back. He had dedicated nearly three years of his life to this effort, and it had all been for nothing. Reb Elazar studied the thin plastic cup, halffilled with the dark liquid. He didn’t regret his years here; his carpentry shop was alive and well, and the bachurim were thriving. And yet. That’s when the next emotion arose, trem-

bling with fury. There did not seem to be a chance, the lawyer had said — perhaps one and a half percent, and even that was optimistic. Reiness hadn’t been there at the time of the meeting, and the Arabs had been. And it was all over, or nearly all over. According to the lawyer, this “nearly” would not have any practical significance. The lot would stay with the Al-Alamis, and Shikovitzer’s dreams of a shul would be buried forever. Seventy years of anticipation had gone down the drain because of one boy. He liked Osher. He still did. This young, impulsive student had come here with despairfilled eyes, and those eyes were now filled with different things, far better things. But why had he done it? Why? He was angry at Osher, so very angry. True, this Yussuf had light-gray eyes, and he certainly didn’t appear Arabic. But why did Osher have to run to tell him that he was leaving Acco and that he was unhappy here? Even before all the complications that this had caused, what about the blatant ungratefulness that he had displayed? When would the kid learn some basic behavioral norms? “Rebbi, you’re not drinking!” “Thanks, boys.” Reb Elazar pushed away the full cup. “It’s too sour for me.” “So then wine, Rebbi!” Shlomo approached with a bottle. “Moriah is really light, Rebbi; it’s nothing!” “No, thanks.” He smiled and rose. “There’s nothing like you, boys. Hashem will help, right?” A babble of voices answered: “Sure!” and “What’s the question!” but he was listening out for Osher’s voice. And suddenly, he realized that he hadn’t seen him, besides at that first moment when he arrived. He closed his eyes for a moment. There was no reason to be angry at Osher; he was just the stick. There are children who struggle to learn all kinds of things, and it takes them a very long time to learn them. They need to be taught and taught and taught again, until the happy ending.
And there still could be a happy ending; he certainly believed that, even if the story with the lot had ended so dismally. He took a deep breath. “Where’s Osher?” he asked. “I hardly saw him.” “I don’t know,” someone said. “Maybe he went up to his room.” “He didn’t go up,” Dovid said. “I think I saw him leaving the yard a few min-

To be with Osher?” “He felt awful about this whole mess,” she said simply. “And I’m happy that he has some family who could be with him now, because you weren’t available, and I wasn’t able to be. And Nechemia is still angry at him.” “Of course I’m angry at him!” their son exclaimed heatedly. “He —” “Enough, Nechemia,” his father said. He sat silently for a few moments. First he bit his bottom lip, but as the moments passed, his pressure dissipated. He took a deep breath. “I want to speak to Yechezkel Rosenberg from Kiryat Chaim.” “Rosenberg?” Nechemia asked. “Yes. He is teaching Osher to write safrus. I want to book another lesson for this week, and a regular schedule for the coming month. I want Osher to have a clear study track.” “Really.” Sarah’s tone was somber, while Nechemia helped himself to a plate of eggplant salad straight from the pot. He sat down and began to eat. “Yes, really.” Bend the stick back to the other direction. “I also want to call his parents in Bnei Brak.” “The Erenbaums? Osher spoke to them this evening.” “He did?” He glanced at his watch. It was twelve o’clock. “Yes, and it was a good conversation. Ariella called to tell me about it. I spoke to Tatty today. It was after the Rav came back, and Ariella showed up just a few minutes later. It worked out perfectly for me, because I couldn’t bring myself to look him in the eye. I just shook his hand and then ran outside. With all the police and excitement and fuss, no one really needed me around, so it was good I had someone to talk to. We went out to the street and looked out at the sea. Behind us, the yard was filled with bachurim, police, the media and just curious onlookers. I stood with Ariella in silence, like we did when we were little. “I really understand you,” she suddenly began. Without a word of apology about her pursuit of me — but it didn’t really make such a difference anymore. It was strange how Motzei Shabbos had been just last night, and I had been so furious about the whole thing, and now it didn’t matter. So she’d followed me. Big deal. So many things happened since then that I couldn’t even remember what had gotten me so angry to begin with. “I really understand you, especially the whole part with Yussuf, who lied to you when he said he was the Rav’s friend and that he was Jewish. I had something similar happen to me recently…” And then she told me how, before she came to the Bergs, she’d rented a room in an Arab lady’s house, without
knowing that she was an Arab. The story sounded really scary, but when she described the orange candles and the lady’s crazy talk, I just began to laugh. So did she. “Not only do I understand you,” she added afterward, “but so do Tatty and Mommy. I told them everything, and they said that they really hope that none of the boys here will insult you or blame you for anything, because it was a mistake that anyone could make. They’ll tell this to you themselves, I’m sure.” And then I called home. Tatty answered the phone. I asked him how he was doing. We hardly spoke about the Rav’s abduction and my getaway the night before. He just said that they had been worried about me and were happy that, baruch Hashem, everything was okay now. At the end of the conversation, I told him that I was learning to write safrus with the Rav’s friend, and he said, “I hope everything is okay with your Rav now, Osher. You owe him a lot of hakaras hatov.” “He looks fine,” I said. “They didn’t hurt him or anything. But I really don’t know what’s going to be with his contract. There was this issue here… I didn’t get all the details, but I know that it got very messed up now. The contract is actually why the Arabs kidnapped him.” “Yes, we heard that a serious problem has come up with that. Let’s daven that everything works out for the best.” It sounded like he wanted to say something more — maybe he wanted to suggest that I apologize to the Rav — but he didn’t say it. We were both quiet for a few seconds, and then he asked, “So, when are you going to come home for a Shabbos, Osher? We miss you. Especially now, we want to see that you’re safe and sound and in one piece.” I smiled, and I could hear him smile, too; it was an old joke at home after every trip or outing that one of us kids took. “Maybe next week, or the week after. Would you want to see something I wrote at the sofer?” I asked. “I’d love to,” Tatty replied. “But first, I want to see you.” To be continued…

When Shlomo Hamelech inaugurated the first Beis Hamikdash, he proclaimed through nevuah that it would forever be the place where the Shechinah would be manifest. Distressingly, he also prophesied a time in which the sins of the Yidden would cause them to be exiled from the land and separated from the Beis Hamikdash, removed from Hashem’s own house. Moreover, the Beis Hamikdash itself would be destroyed. Not once, but twice, have we lived through this painful churban. Bayis Rishon was a place in which the Shechinah was clearly manifest; Bayis Sheini less so. It was a building that stood largely empty, lacking certain nissim, the gift of prophecy and vital keilim. Despite its lack, it remained the most heilig place in the world and a place for man to meet with his Creator. Below we will explore some of the significant differences between the two Batei Mikdash, and what we will, b’ezras Hashem, very soon merit to fully tap into when we experience the Geulah. May our prayers be speedily heard, Moshiach sent, and the final Beis Hamikdash built.

An Open Letter on Behalf of the Board of Trustees of Maimonides Medical Center For 111 years, Maimonides Medical Center has been a pillar of our Brooklyn communities and a pioneer in the advancement of medicine. As the Board of Trustees charged with carrying on this legacy and overseeing the fulfillment of its mission, we wish to respond to the recent publicity campaign that has been launched against the hospital and appeal to its organizers for a constructive proposal. Our Board is made up of 32 individual Trustees representing many different communities and backgrounds. We volunteer our time and energy because we are incredibly proud of Maimonides and the work done every day by its staff. Many of us are Maimonides patients ourselves, as are our parents, children, and spouses. Year after year, Maimonides is recognized by objective thirdparty organizations for achieving clinical outcomes that are among the best in the country. The data tells us clearly that we serve a population that is more at risk than average and provide medical care that is far better than average. We are not perfect. We continually seek to listen and learn from our patients, employees and communities. We strive to get better every day. We know the high level of medical care we provide is not always matched by the patient experience. Our medical technology is new but many of our facilities are old. That is why we built the new Doctors Pavilion, why we are modernizing and doubling the size of our emergency room, why we are building Brooklyn’s only freestanding Emergency Room for children. These new facilities cost hundreds of millions of dollars and will benefit our communities for generations. The pandemic has created enormous challenges for our society. Hospitals, in particular, have been exceptionally challenged. Maimonides is hardly alone in coping with nationwide staffing shortages, employee burnout, skyrocketing supply costs, and volatile demand for its services.

Moreover, Maimonides, like other hospitals that serve large Medicaid populations, has historically been disadvantaged by a deeply inequitable funding system. Medicaid has paid hospitals just 61 cents for every dollar of care provided. Put simply, we were paid far less for providing the same services than hospitals serving more affluent communities. The clinical outcomes we achieve are all the more remarkable in this context. New York State leadership recognizes this and has now included Maimonides among a select group of hospitals that are eligible for enhanced Medicaid reimbursement which will help mitigate this historical deficiency. Early in the pandemic the Board made a decision that has guided it ever since: do what it takes and commit the necessary resources to meet the needs of our communities during this crisis. Like many hospitals, we spent more than we earned
in this period, drawing on our balance sheet to absorb losses rather than cutting back services. As the pandemic waxed and waned, one of the ways we sought to mitigate this funding gap was through philanthropic support from individuals who expressed an interest in strengthening the organization. We were grateful for the generous support we received from many new donors. We were surprised, however, when one prospective donor proposed to take control of our board as a condition of philanthropic support. We respectfully declined this proposal, which we believed was inconsistent with our fiduciary duties and our mission, and not in the best interests of the organization or the diverse communities we serve. Apparently dissatisfied with this outcome, this individual, in collaboration with others, has now unleashed a destructive and deceptive campaign that discourages people from using the hospital, makes several false charges and claims, calls for a reduction in hospital funding, attempts to demoralize our workforce, and seeks to undermine the unions that represent most of our employees. To those financing and organizing this campaign, we have a simple message: this is not the way to achieve anything constructive. Whatever the campaign’s intent, its practical effect is to harm the hospital, those who use the hospital, and those who work there. The longer this goes on, the greater the damage will be. The last thing our communities or our workforce can afford right now is a manufactured crisis that threatens to weaken an institution that hundreds of thousands of Brooklynites rely on to access critical services. If you have a sincere interest in improving the hospital’s services, we call on you to come forward with a concrete proposal. We stand ready - as we always have - to engage with all people of good faith who wish to work together in furtherance of improving healthcare for our communities. For our part, we will continue to focus on doing everything possible to preserve and protect the delivery of world-class care for those we serve.

n Monday, July 11, 1927, shortly after three o’clock in the afternoon, a 6.25 magnitude earthquake rocked Eretz Yisroel. The epicenter was near Yericho and the quake became known as the Jericho Earthquake. Though it lasted only five seconds, the quake claimed 500 lives and injured 700. In Yerushalayim, 300 homes were destroyed and hundreds were left homeless. Ten years later, on October 12, 1937, the Jewish Telegraph Agency reported that earth tremors were once again detected in the area. People braced for the worst — but fortunately, their fears were not realized. Only the Al Aqsa Mosque in Yerushalayim suffered severe structural damage. The tremors of 1937 and of the earlier 1927 Jericho Earthquake took their toll on the ancient mosque. Al Aqsa was in danger of collapse. (I know, you’re wondering why this should interest us. It will; keep on reading.)
The Jericho Earthquake; Yerushalayim, 1927
Presently, there are two large domed structures on Har Habayis. One is the familiar gold-domed Dome of the Rock. To the south, just inside the southern wall of the mount, is the gray-domed Al Aqsa Mosque. Al Aqsa is the central Muslim place of worship in Yerushalayim and its environs — not the Dome of the Rock, which is not a mosque but merely a shrine. The serious damage to Al Aqsa rendered the mosque unstable. Muslim authorities appointed Egyptian architect Mahmoud Bey Ahmad and Robert W. Hamilton, the British Mandatory Director of Antiquities, to be in charge of dismantling the mosque — stone by stone, beam by beam — and then reconstructing it. As the work progressed, between 1938 and 1942, Hamilton dutifully documented and photographed their progress. As the old roof was being taken down, Hamilton made an unexpected and exciting discovery. In order to appreciate and share in the excitement of Hamilton’s discovery, we have to pause here and learn a bit about our Beis Hamikdash. Chazal tell us, “Whoever has not seen the Beis Hamikdash as rebuilt by Hordus Hamelech has never seen a glorious structure” (Sukkah 51b). The Gemara is referring not to the spiritual aura of the Second Beis Hamikdash, which is beyond description; instead, this refers to its physical structure. The Second Beis Hamikdash was an architectural wonder that attracted many visitors. Jews as well as non-Jews from near and far came to admire its beauty. Hordus’ maniacal sense of grandeur and close attention to architectural details have made him known throughout the ages as a master builder. He built the magnificent palace-fortresses of Masada and Herodion, the building encompassing the Me’aras Hamachpelah, and the seaport at Caesarea Maritima. He applied this zeal to the Beis Hamikdash. Prior to the rule of Hordus (c. 3723–3756 [37–4 BCE]), the Beis Hamikdash had fallen into a sorry state of disrepair. The rulers of the previous era were the Chashmonai kings. The early Chashmonaim gave their very lives fighting the Syrian-Greeks and their Jewish sympathizers, the Misyavnim. The original Chashmonaim (c. 3620 [140 BCE]) recaptured the Beis Hamikdash and 104

rededicated it, and they were rewarded with a miraculous military victory and the oil that burned for eight nights. However, their descendants were somewhat indifferent toward the Beis Hamikdash and allowed it to deteriorate. Hordus, who was a descendant of the people of Edom who were forced to convert to Judaism, led a bloody rebellion and seized the throne of Yehudah. The priestly family of the Chashmonaim was annihilated and their 103-year dynasty ended. Hordus’ rule was recognized and approved by the Roman senate. But Hordus feared the wrath of the rabbanim, who certainly would not recognize an Edomi descendant as their king, and he had many of them killed. He later regretted his actions, and under the guidance of the sage Bava ben Butah, Hordus pledged to completely rebuild the Beis Hamikdash. (See Bava Basra 3b for a more complete story.) Hordus’ rebuilding project began several years before the common era and took eight years, requiring over 180,000 workers — architects, woodcutters, quarrymen, stone cutters, carpenters, artisans and porters. The Royal Basilica, model
Hamikdash, tells us that the largest building on Har Habayis was the Royal Basilica. Basilica does not mean a church. It is a style of architecture that was commonly used in ancient Rome for courts, and centuries later, was adopted by Christians for their major church buildings. In fact, the Gemara (Yoma 25a) tells us that the large building that housed the Sanhedrin on Har Habayis was a basilica, or basilici, to use the word in the Gemara. The unique basilica style is a long, rectangular building consisting of a single massive room, with several rows of columns dividing the room into three aisles called cloisters. The center aisle was one and a half times wider than either of the two outer aisles. The ceiling and roof above the center aisle were twice the height of the ceilings of the two outer aisles. Josephus prefaces his description of the Royal Basilica of the Har Habayis with, “[It] is more worthy of description than any other [structure] under the sun.” This Royal Basilica was built along the inside of the Southern Wall of the Har Habayis and was about 900 feet long, which is about the length of three football fields. The building was 125 feet wide. The roof over the center aisle was 100 feet high. This ten-story-high building was a single, massive room! The roofs of the Royal Basilica were supported by 162 magnificent marble columns, each one graced with a Corinthian capital. It required three men holding hands to encompass just one of the columns. The Corinthian columns supported great cedarwood beams that held up the roof. The wood beams had beautiful, intricate carvings engraved onto their undersides. Thus described Josephus Flavius, who had seen the building many times while serving there. He concludes his remarks with “[A description of] this structure seemed incredible to those who had not seen it and was beheld in amazement by those who set eyes upon it.” He also remarked that anyone who gained access to the roof and would look down into the Kidron Valley would instantly feel faint. Oddly, Josephus does not tell us the function of this massive building. Even more curious is that the Gemara, which details the entire structure of the Beis Hamikdash, cubit by cubit, does not seem to refer to this building at all. It may come as a surprise, but the Al Aqsa Mosque on Har Habayis is a basilica (which is not a Muslim style of architecture) and mimics the Royal Basilica of the Beis Hamikdash that once stood in that same place, though the mosque 108

ceiling beams are supported by Corinthian columns, a design foreign to Muslims — but according to Josephus, in the very style of the Second Beis Hamikdash. Quite possibly some of these columns are remains from the Royal Basilica of the Beis Hamikdash. It is well known to archaeologists that ancient builders reused the remains of destroyed structures that had stood in that location earlier. Reusing old materials is called secondary use. This refers to reusing large building stones, expensive and durable cedarwood, and ornamental elements such as columns and capitals. Often, the newer structure was constructed in a style similar to that of the previously standing building. As the archaeological expression goes, “Fallen walls have memories.” The Al Aqsa mosque was first built on the Har Habayis by the Muslims of the Umayyad Caliphate of Damascus around the year 4460 (700 CE). It was constructed out of the ruins of Royal Basilica that had remained abandoned there since the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash in 3830 (70 CE). In the 1900s, as Hamilton was dismantling the Al Aqsa Mosque, he saw that its roof was supported by great cedarwood beams, some of which were more than 40 feet in length. The beams had beautiful floral designs carved into them. You may recall that Josephus described the Royal Basilica as having beautiful designs carved onto the underside of the cedarwood ceiling beams. tographed the carvings and incorporated the images in his final report. A few of Hamilton’s photographs accompany this article and are generally not seen by the public at large. New wooden beams were used in the reconstruction of the mosque. What happened to the old beams? They were piled up and left near the mosque. Subsequently, some were taken to the Rockefeller Museum in Yerushalayim, some were sold to a junk dealer in the West Bank, some of the beams just “disappeared,” and a few are still there, piled haphazardly on the Har Habayis near the back of the Mercy Gate, Shaar Harachamim, on the Eastern Wall. Some of the beams that were taken to the Rock-

efeller Museum were radiocarbon dated and indeed found to be from the time of Hordus’ Temple, the rebuilt Second Beis Hamikdash! Some of the beams were even older than that. They dated to the era of the First Beis Hamikdash! It seems that Hordus had reused beams from the earlier era for his rebuilt Second Beis Hamikdash. What about the beams that were carted off by the junk dealer in the West Bank? His name is Baziyan, and he is the largest junk dealer in the area. He knows exactly what the beams are, and he takes good care of them. He has no interest in selling them, if that’s what you are wondering. That is more than can be said of the beams still lying around on Har Habayis. Here we have taken a tiny glimpse at the architectural wonder of the Bayis Sheini, and much additional information is available. We can only daven that soon, the beams will be used once again in the building of the Third Beis Hamikdash, may that prayer be fulfilled quickly in our time. A Hole in the Home The most common zecher l’Churban commemoration is leaving an unpainted space measuring an amah by an amah at the entrance of one’s home. A Yid knows that his home cannot be complete as long as the Beis Hamikdash lies in ruins, and the gaping void is to be visible every time he steps into his home so he tangibly feels the loss. According to most poskim, the unpainted area should be on the wall opposite the entrance; in some cases, the zecher L’Churban may be above the entrance. While the requirement to leave an area unpainted at the entranceway of one’s home is clearly stated in Shulchan Aruch (560:1), among other sources, it is a custom that has sadly declined over the years, and many Yiddish homes no longer have that commemoration. This probably was due in part to the leniencies applicable when one purchases a home from a non-Jew that was already painted by the previous owner, or when renting a home from a non-Jew. However, efforts should be taken to revive this mitzvah as one that should be performed carefully (Shuvah Yisrael 1:71). The Kaf Hachaim (560:11) says that those who are careful to leave an unpainted zecher L’Churban in their home are to be praised. Furthermore, there is a machlokes haposkim regarding whether one may decorate the walls of their homes with elaborate wallpapers, decorative ceramic tiles, or multicolored paint jobs. While according to the Tur these wall decorations are permissible, provided that there’s an amah-by-amah unfinished zecher l’Churban at the entrance, the Rambam prohibits these enhanceAt the moment a new home is cemented ments. Meatless Wednesdays There are Yidden who refrain from eating any meat on Wednesdays in commemoration of the Churban. This is a 24-hour abstinence starting on Tuesday night. The source for this is the Shelah Hakadosh (Maseches Shavuos, Ner Mitzvah), where he writes about a chassid who woke up one morning on Shavuos after learning all night and gathered together a chaburah to share with them that a malach had learned with him and discussed several takanos. Among them was the takanah that on Yom Revi’i, one should refrain from eating meat or drinking wine — except in the case of seudas mitzvah — as a zecher l’Churban, which took place on Wednesday.
A Galus Table At the end of each weekday meal, it is customary to recite the chapter Al Naharos Bavel prior to Birchas Hamazon, as per the Mishnah Berurah (1:11), who quotes the Shelah Hakadosh. The Shulchan Aruch (560:2) discusses that there are those who do not display all their silverware on their table at once, and those who leave one table setting incomplete, as a sign of mourning. These minhagim do not apply on Shabbos or yom tov. Similarly, to diminish their joy, women should not wear all their jewelry at once.
Not Building a New Home There are families who will not build a new home as long as our Beis Hamikdash lies forlorn. These Yidden will only move into an existing home, renovate an older home, or construct a home on an already existing foundation. This minhag is alluded to in the tzava’ah of Rabbi Yehudah Hachassid as well as in the Kav Hayashar, though there are disagreements among the meforshim regarding what exactly should be deduced from the words therein.
As we chart our way in Galus, doing what we have to in our temporary homes, let us remember what we lost and that our lives are not complete as long as the Shechinah does not have its Home here on earth. August 3, 2022

One may take a shower for Shabbos, but should have the water cooler than usual in order to limit the pleasure.
There is a debate among poskim as to whether one is allowed to learn on Shabbos afternoon. One should follow the psak of his rav in this regard. Rabbi Rudinsky is lenient, especially if one has a regular seder limud during that time.
There is a debate among poskim regarding whether one wears his regular Shabbos garments this Shabbos. One should follow the general minhag to wear normal Shabbos clothing, unless he has a different custom. (A hiddur would be to wear a previously worn Shabbos shirt or a white weekday shirt that will not be noticeable to an outsider as not being his Shabbos shirt.) There is no seudas hamafsekes when Tisha B’Av is nidche.
MOTZEI SHABBOS Between shekiah and tzeis hakochavim, one may no longer eat, drink or wash his hands. However, one must wait until tzeis hakochavim (meaning, his normal zman on a regular Motzei Shabbos) to change his shoes or any other garments for Tisha B’Av. One does not sit on the floor until tzeis hakochavim.

It is permissible according to all poskim to learn items related to Tisha B’Av, such as hilchos Tisha B’Av, and it is recommended to do so. Tzidkascha is not said during Mincha. On Shabbos during the Nine Days, one may consume meat or wine during shalosh seudos after dark until bentching. (However, if Tisha B’Av is observed on Sunday, he would need to stop at shekiah.) One must finish eating shalosh seudos by shekiah.
Today, most communities start Maariv a bit later so the men have time to change before coming to shul for Maariv and Eicha. If one keeps 72 minutes, and Maariv in his shul will be starting around the time his Shabbos is over, he should bring his Tisha B’Av footwear to shul prior to Shabbos. If one keeps 72 minutes, and will be davening Maariv at a minyan before that zman, he should wear his Shabbos footwear for Maariv and change afterward.
HAVDALAH Since Havdalah is not made on Motzei Shabbos, “Baruch hamavdil bein kodesh l’chol” should be recited prior to doing any melacha. Borei Me’orei Ha’aish is said in shul on Motzei Shabbos, before Megillas Eicha. Those not going to shul on Motzei Shabbos for Eicha should have an adult male make Borei Me’orei Ha’aish at home for the family. Women should not make the Borei Me’orai Ha’aish on their own, and should have an adult male be motzi them. Borei Minei Besamim is not made on Motzei Shabbos nor on Sunday. On Sunday night, prior to breaking the fast, Havdalah is said on a cup of wine or grape juice. The Havdalah consists of only the brachos of Borei Pri Hagafen and Hamavdil. Those who are not fasting, including women, should make Havdalah prior to eating on Tisha B’Av. Chamar medinah such as beer, coffee or tea is preferred, though grape juice is also acceptable.
FASTING WHEN TISHA B’AV IS NIDCHE We are more lenient regarding fasting on a Tisha B’Av Nidche than on a regular Tisha B’Av. Therefore, one who is feeling ill should consult their rav as to whether they should fast. Many poskim today hold that women who are me’uberes or meinekes are not required to fast on Tisha B’Av Nidche. Rabbi Rudinsky follows the opinion that they need not fast. When a bris takes place on Tisha B’Av Nidche, the parents, sandak and mohel are allowed to break their fast for the seudas mitzvah.
MOTZEI TISHA B’AV There are different opinions as to when the fast is over. Rabbi Rudinsky relies on those who follow the zman of 45 minutes after shekiah. Laundry may be washed immediately after Tisha B’Av when it is nidche, as it is this year. Shaving and taking a haircut are also permitted immediately on Sunday night. Even when Tisha B’Av is nidche, meat and wine (aside from Havdalah) should not be consumed Sunday night, but can be consumed immediately in the morning the following day. Although music is permitted on Sunday night, it is preferable to wait until the next day, in deference to the nature of the day. It is preferable to say Kiddush Levanah after one has already broken their fast, and with a minyan.

“Va’esa eschem al kanfei nesharim” While most birds carry their young between their feet, the eagle places its eaglets upon its wings as it flies. Other birds are afraid their babies may be snatched by a bird flying above, but the eagle — the prince of the skies — knows that no bird will fly above it. It fears only being shot at from below, by a human, and would prefer being hit than having its children hit. This is the way Hakadosh Baruch Hu took Klal Yisroel out of Mitzrayim, surrounding us with the Clouds of Glory that protected us and absorbed any stones or arrows that the Mitzriyim fired in our direction. (Rashi, quoting the Mechilta, Shemos 19:4)
Let’s take a closer look at this majestic bird — a symbol of bravery, freedom, intelligence and grace. Is It an Eagle? Often confused for vultures or hawks, the eagle can be discerned by its flat, spread-out wings as it soars. Other predatory species hold their wings in a shallow V shape. Interestingly, the Hebrew term we associate with the eagle — nesher — is currently used to refer to vultures. The question is what the word “nesher” refers to in Tanach.
Have you got an “eagle eye”? If anyone has dubbed you with this nature, you probably have a keen sense of observation. Here’s why eagles and sharp eyes go together… • Eagles are known for their amazing eyesight. They can spot prey as far as two miles away! • An average eagle’s vision is four or five times stronger than that of humans — with some species seeing eight times better than we do. • Eagles can look straight at the sun without squinting. When a baby eaglet cannot stare at the sun and turns its eyes down instead, it is considered a weakling and is cast out of the nest. • The eagle’s large eyes take up nearly 50% of its head.
Eagles Are Apex Predators At the top of the food chain, eagles don’t have any natural predators. They feed on large prey such as foxes, wild cats, fish, monkeys and even young deer. Eagle chicks, or eaglets, can be preyed upon by black bears, foxes, large birds and wolves.

• Eagles’ eyes are on the sides of their heads, allowing them to see 340 degrees around them. (Humans have a 180-degree range.) • Eagles have transparent eyelids, called nictitating membranes. They can see with their eyes closed! (They also have a second layer of eyelids that are opaque.)

A Welcoming Nest Eagle nests are a big deal. Typical eagle homes, or aeries, are generally some two to four feet deep, four or five feet wide, and weigh hundreds of pounds. Eagles build their nests atop tall trees or high cliffs in order to keep their eggs safe. They often reuse the same nest year after year, continuously adding twigs and more to “renovate” and improve their large residence. These nests can grow to 20 feet wide. The largest recorded eagle nest was built in St. Petersburg, Florida, and weighed over 2 tons!
Bald Eagles Aren’t Bald Interestingly, the national bird is not bald, despite its name. Born light-gray, “bald” eaglets slowly turn brown. At four or five years of age, the feathers on their heads turn white, lending them a bald effect. Another possible reason this species is called “bald” is based on the Old English word balde, which means white.
What do the $1 bill, the president’s flag, and the U.S. military insignia have in common? They all feature the U.S. national bird! The American bald eagle was selected by the Founding Fathers as the emblem of our country at the Second Continental Congress. Its fierce beauty and proud independence were said to symbolize the strength and freedom of the United States. Interestingly, some opposed the choice, including Benjamin Franklin who favored the wild turkey as our country’s symbol.
Of Global Grace Other countries also use the majestic bird as their national symbol. An icon of Arab nationalism, the heraldic eagle represents Egypt, Iraq, Palestine, Jordan and Syria. European countries such as Germany, Russia and Austria embody themselves through this courageous bird as well.
In Our Backyard There are two eagle species commonly found in New York: the bald eagle and the golden eagle. Bald eagles can be spotted mostly in the winter months, but also remain local all year round. Golden eagles are migratory, making them more noticeable in our parts during the late fall and early spring.
