ANOTHER MATTER TO MIND

Thank you for your informative and entertaining weekly. It is my weekly treat. From the time-relevant content to delicious recipes, yours is a publication that is a must to pick up!

I’d like to add a pointer to the article on phone etiquette you fea tured in the past issue. When placing a casual phone call, please call only when you have the time to speak. If you are planning to dedicate 80% of the time speaking to your children, siblings, spouse or whoever is around you at home, it ends up being very, very frustrating for the person on the other end of the line.

During hectic times, instead of speaking on the phone, focus on your family, and when you do have that extra time to catch up, I will be more than happy to chat with you.

Here’s to many more enjoyable (and focused) phone calls!

SOMETIMES AN INTRUSION

I remember reading an article years back about a family who brought the telephone into their home for the first time in the begin ning of the 20th century. The article described how the father was annoyed with this new rude stranger who’d ring without warning and barge into their lives unannounced, demanding to be attended to.

At the risk of sounding antisocial, I often look at phones like that too. There are times I also want to silence mine — and sometimes I do — but I also want the benefits being reachable offers.

That is why I was truly pleased to see that you chose to address phone etiquette, something which many of the callers to my home seem to lack a basic awareness of. I hope that it will help people realize

that just because they are night owls doesn’t mean that others appreciate phone calls at 11:00 p.m. (Even if they are still up and about, not everyone wants to socialize at that late hour!)

Another phone quirk that I find vexing is when a child calls an adult to ask a question or favor on behalf of their parent. (“Can I come to play or sleep over at your home?” “My mother needs a recipe; can you give it to me?”) There is a basic disrespect that comes across to the older party in such a case.

Before signing off, I must also add that the historical article on telephones was so interesting!

I found your issue themed around flying really fascinat ing. It was so interesting to get a view from the cockpit, from a frum man, no less, who taught himself that the sky, indeed, is the limit! It was also so fascinating to read what went into the purchasing and delivery of a ticket not that long ago, and it made me appreciate how convenient booking a ticket is today. (And yes, I always use a travel agent for the reasons men tioned in the article.)

The beauty of the issue was that my boys were glued to the pages (and the pictures and descriptions of the emergency landings, of course!) I find it amazing that you truly cater your content to every member of the family.

The Signposts on Our Route

When Yaakov stated, “Im Lavan garti ” (Bereishis 32:5), he was hinting at the fact that despite living with Lavan all these years, he had not learned from Lavan’s bad ways, but had kept all 613 mitzvos of the Torah, as Rashi says on these words, “V’taryag mitzvos shamarti .”

There was once a man who was walk ing a long way on his own. Suddenly, the sky began to darken, and large, gray clouds hovered above. In no time, the clouds burst, spurting heavy droplets that soaked the man to the bone. Just then, a wagon drove by. The driver, see ing the drenched pedestrian who had no protection from the elements, slowed down and addressed the passerby.

“Reb Yid,” he said, “can I offer you a ride?”

The man simply shook his head, caus ing a shower of raindrops to trickle off his hat. “No, thank you.”

“But I’d be happy to take you!” the driver said. “And there’s no telling how long this downpour will last. My wagon is nice and dry. Why don’t you quickly hop inside?”

Still, the man declined.

THE BUNDLE OF SEFORIM he carried were his heart and soul. Years of toil in Torah were invested in the learning, writ ing and printing of each of his precious volumes. And now, the Chofetz Chaim was carrying a stack of his printed manuscripts to the towns and hamlets, hoping to disseminate his Torah to the masses.

It was before the days of seforim stores. There were no mega displays of carefully lined up seforim of every genre. In fact, personally-owned seforim were few and far between, which gave the Chofetz Chaim one option if he wished to fulfill his mission. He needed to peddle his “wares” on his own.

On one of these trips to the sub urbs, a man approached the gadol with a burning question: “Why does the Rav exert himself so? So much effort goes into writing the books and gathering the funds to print them, and the measly income the Rav makes from selling a few pieces hardly covers the costs! Isn’t it a waste of effort? There are so many other ways the Rav can earn a re spectable living!”

The Chofetz Chaim smiled warmly and replied with a tale.

“As you wish,” said the driver. But before he rode off, he had to satiate his curiosity. “Just tell me — why do you prefer walking in the rain?”

The pedestrian grinned. “Listen, I’d be happy to get into your wagon. But you’re traveling north. That’s the direction I’m coming from! If I take a ride with you, I’ll be heading away from my destination instead of toward it…”

The Chofetz Chaim turned to his questioner. “Are you asking why I don’t invest my energy in more profitable undertakings? My answer is the same! My goal, my mission, is to generate a nachas ruach for my Cre ator. That is my only aspiration in life. Spreading these words of Torah is a tool that helps me get closer to my goal. Making money is nice, but it won’t take me closer to my destination. Perhaps it’ll even take me farther away, in the op posite direction. So, of what use is it to me?”

Yaakov Avinu taught us this message.

“Im Lavan garti” — I lived together with Lavan. Both of us were busy with the same things. Both of us lived in the same house. Both of us grazed our sheep. Yet while our actions were the same, our ob jectives were miles apart.

Lavan had his eye on his destina tion of self-gratification and pleasurable pursuits, while Yaakov was focused on elevating himself and drawing closer to Hashem. Thus, even while performing the same physical actions, the two were moving in opposite directions!

This is the essential difference be tween a Yid and all other creations. Like the rest of the world, the Yid eats, sleeps and earns a living. But unlike the rest of the world, the motive behind a Yid’s ac tions is pure. The final destination of our route is to fulfill ratzon Hashem, and that infuses our every action with kedusha. May we all merit remaining razorfocused on our goal!

Yaakov beseeched Hashem to draw another parallel from his behavior. “Just as I did not send all the herds to Eisav at once but spaced them out, let the exorbitant taxes that the nations place on my children be spread out as well.” Yaakov feared that if all taxes would be levied at once, Klal Yisroel would be unable to endure the difficulty.

Moshe fuses a variety of disciplines in his practice, including the alternative therapy known as HK, or Health Kinesiology. Moshe has seen remarkable results over the years and has become a household name among those seeking natural and harmless solutions to finally move beyond what ails them.

The practice of Health Kinesiology has grown in popularity in recent years, but since it involves the use of energy, Moshe cautions that individuals should get approval from their rav before being treated. This week, we sat down with Mr. Klein to learn more about his work, his field and his record of success.

HOW DID A CHASSIDISH YUNGERMAN LIKE YOURSELF GET INTO THIS LINE OF WORK?

I’ve always had a knack for healing and the desire to help people in pain. Over the years, many would consult with me in regard to their issues, and it was natural that I gravitated to this fascinating field. My interest in how the emotional and physical aspects of our lives interact, my work with struggling bachurim, and my involvement in medical cases further cemented my belief that emotional healing is my calling.

HOW DOES EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING AFFECT PHYSICAL HEALTH?

This is something I wish people would be more aware of: Your emotions directly impact everything about you. When you are stressed, nervous, anxious or angry, your body is suffering a blockage or a form of tightness as it is unable to process the negative feelings. It is analogous to the physical discomfort experienced when eating something bad that the body can’t process. And these negative emotions prevent you from living life to your full potential in ways that are often not clear until you overcome them and unleash the real you.

CAN YOU BRIEFLY DESCRIBE HEALTH KINESIOLOGY TO THOSE WHO ARE UNFAMILIAR?

Health Kinesiology is a fascinating world, but allow me to focus on how we apply

it and the way it integrates the knowledge I’ve accumulated. People dealing with emotional issues are unable to process what they’re feeling because they don’t allow themselves to truly explore and feel it. Additionally, there are often underlying issues (e.g., anger is very often rooted in fears), and those are hard for nonprofessionals to identify. It is natural to create a wall of denial around these issues, many of which are actually behind addictions and harmful habits.

Through Health Kinesiology we use energy testing — or muscle testing, as people refer to it — to determine what is truly going on within so we can begin moving the subject past it. We employ verbal and physical tools to that end, with fascinating results.

DOES HK ALSO WORK IN THE CONTEXT OF HELPING THE BODY HEAL?

When the body’s balance isn’t right, it causes it to fight negative emotions in unhealthy ways as mentioned above, resulting in a downward spiral. We balance the energy field so that it can accept the negative emotion and deal with it in a healthy manner so that it passes and does not cause the pain and disruption these feelings often cause.

CAN ANYONE PRACTICE HK ON THEIR OWN? HOW DO PROFESSIONALS DISTINGUISH THEMSELVES?

The basic fundamentals of how it works are available to all, just like the basics of math can be found in many textbooks. But you can’t compare studying with a top professor to learning from an amateur educator. Similarly, one needs to have a knack for this unique world to master the craft.

IN ADDITION TO HK, WHAT OTHER METHODS DO YOU UTILIZE TO HELP YOUR CLIENTS?

As mentioned earlier, it is our body’s natural reaction to try and fight off negative emotions. But the best way to deal with them, in fact, is to acknowledge them, be conscious about what they’re doing, and observe them objectively for what they are. When you do that, they suddenly lose much of their power and grip.

What is clear is that when we aren’t mindful of our thoughts and how they operate, we begin identifying with them and lose the ability to treat them. In reality, just

like we can look objectively at a lung infection and understand that it’s not us at fault, but something happening within one of our body parts, so too should we be able to look at negative thoughts.

WHO ARE YOUR TYPICAL CLIENTS?

I often work with people who face fears that prevent them from succeeding in life, specifically in business. Even prosperous business owners can feel stuck, unable to advance, or incapable of enjoying their success. There are countless heavy burdens involved which make it difficult to take care of daily matters, such as decision making, hiring/firing individuals and so on.

So much of what distinguished employers and talented CEOs struggle with on a daily basis is rooted in the complexities- or really simplicities- of their emotional health. These emotions are formed by their personalities, their past experiences, and their sense of self worth, and can lead to blockages of crippling fear, deep shame, and more.

It’s incredible to see literal transformation as we begin the work of inner exploration and clarify their deepest fears and limitations, which, combined with various holistic techniques, ultimately leads to uncovering the ambitious, confident capabilities hidden inside.

DO YOU SEE DIFFERENT CLIENTS AS WELL?

Sure. There are those who have heavy responsibilities on their shoulders, people who are simply overwhelmed with various life challenges. I also have many parents who solicit my

expertise to help their children struggling with focus, social issues, inner fears, anxiety or any emotional pain that hampers them in some way.

WHAT IS YOUR PROCESS FOR HELPING YOUR CLIENTS,

AND WHY HAVE YOU SEEN SO MUCH SUCCESS IN THIS PRACTICE ?

It’s all been siyata d’Shmaya; I am nothing on my own. But to answer your first question, our healing process is based on identifying and bringing the issues to the forefront. Only then can we begin working on them and balancing the body to allow the negative things to pass through it, and the positive things to be accepted. We apply methods and techniques that include more conventional components as well as alternative energybased healing.

WHAT KIND OF RESULTS DO YOU SEE?

The outcomes are truly remarkable. It doesn’t happen all at once, but over time the little shifts in perspective and adjustments to the imbalances begin adding up, and lives are transformed for the better.

Then there was the terribly-stressed business owner who was ready to give up his business due to the toll it was taking on his mental strengths. His greatest blockage was a lack of proper boundaries, and after releasing the tensions of “must” and “have to”, the net result was tremendously relieving. He now feels freer and more productive at the same time and is able to continue running his thriving business.

THAT SOUNDS INCREDIBLE AND PROMISING. WHAT ELSE CAN YOU SHARE WITH US?

I recently worked with a child who displayed many behavioral issues and constantly fought with his siblings, and his parents were at their wits’ end. I worked with the child to expand his window of tolerance, but then when it came to light that his school environment was affecting him negatively, we worked with the parents to optimize his cheder experience, and the child is now shining.

Another recent experience we had was a yungerman who could not hold down a job and was simply miserable on a day-to-day basis. After we worked through his deep shame and fears, he not only found a job that he excels at, but has discovered so much joy and vitality.

Mayor Signs $1 99-Year Lease for Brooklyn Eruv

Nearly two months after its last portion was built, the Brook lyn Eruv was officially completed on November 28, with Mayor Eric Adams signing a 99-year lease for the eruv’s physical struc ture, allowing people to carry within its boundaries.

Brooklyn Eruv board member Rabbi Eli Uminer said that the eruv has been technically functional since Yom Kippur, encom passing multiple smaller eruvim that cover parts of the borough and extending their borders. Constructed under the oversight of Rabbi Yaakov Zeide, shlit”a, Rabbi Asher Eckstein, shlit”a, and Rab bi Gavriel Tzinner, shlit”a, along with seven other rabbanim, the

Brooklyn Eruv covers the vast majority of the borough south and east of Williamsburg, Bushwick and East New York. According to Boro Park 24, the Brooklyn Eruv is adjacent to the Williamsburg eruv, and it is permitted to cross directly from one to the other.

In previous years, the Jewish community had obtained verbal permission from the city to rent the structure that made up pre vious eruvim, but Adams signed a proclamation at City Hall allow ing the use of the structure for the next 99 years and acknowledg ing payment in full, at the price of $1. Among those in attendance at the signing were Rabbi Tuvia Greisman, Rabbi Shmuel Polt man, Rabbi Yossel Greenwald and Rabbi Uminer, all members of the vaad of the Brooklyn Eruv.

“It was very nice that the mayor took the time to host us and make the eruv for us,” said Rabbi Uminer.

In addition to preventing chilul Shabbos, the eruv is expected to enhance oneg Shabbos for countless Brooklyn residents and will be checked weekly by a group of mashgichim.

Lufthansa Pays $2.6M Settlement to KerestirBound Passengers Barred

From Flight

Seven months after being barred from boarding a connecting Lufthansa flight to Hungary, over 100 Jewish passengers have received checks from the airline as part of a settlement in a discrimination lawsuit.

Hamodia reported that attorney Mark Goldfeder of the Ameri can Center for Law and Justice represented a group of passengers that sued the airline, which claimed that Jewish passengers were being penalized because some travelers had not complied with Lufthansa’s mask rules on their flight from New York to Frank furt. Lufthansa agreed to settle the case, paying out more than $21,000 to each of the affected passengers, who received checks for $17,400 after attorney’s fees. According to the Simple Flying blog, 128 passengers were part of the Lufthansa lawsuit.

The incident took place on May 4, as passengers were mak ing their way from New York to Hungary to observe the yahrzeit of Reb Shayele Kerestir, with a stopover in Frankfurt. The story made international headlines after videos of exchanges between passengers and Lufthansa personnel were posted on DansDeals, with an employee saying, “Everyone has to pay for a couple,” be fore adding, “Jewish people who were the mess, who made the problems.”

Lufthansa has apologized on multiple occasions for the inci dent. In addition to meeting with passengers, elected officials, rabbis and community leaders, the airline has also pledged to provide its employees with training on anti-Semitism and has said it will be creating a senior management position dedicated to preventing discrimination and anti-Semitism.

Felder Launches Hotline To Answer Financial Aid Eligibility Questions

Multiple city, state and federal programs exist to help those facing financial difficulties, but Senator Simcha Felder believes that many of his constituents are hesitant to look into these op tions for a variety of reasons. Hoping to clarify eligibility require ments and eliminate the stigma of reaching out for help, Felder is launching a Help Is Here hotline that will begin operations on

December 13.

Boro Park 24 reported that Felder will have four employees manning the hotline, with private one-on-one sessions available over the phone, on Zoom or in person, with appointments avail able every Tuesday, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“Rising costs on everyday items affect everyone, but they pose a tremendous strain for people and families living on low or fixed incomes. Fortunately, there are many government pro grams that can help people make ends meet, but there is also a lot of confusion, misunderstanding and stigma holding people back,” said Felder. “That ends now. If you want help getting the benefits you are entitled to, help is here!”

Constituents are encouraged to reach out to Felder’s office at 718-253-2015 to schedule an appointment to determine whether they qualify for any government aid programs. The initial oneon-one assessment and information session will have constitu ents preparing and reviewing documentation that can include W-2 forms, rent or mortgage bills, utilities, childcare bills and out-of-pocket medical expenses to ensure that they have the nec essary information in place. Felder’s office will help those who qualify for additional programs complete the application pro cess and is always available to help people with their current benefits or other issues.

Sheri Toiv, Felder’s director of communications, noted that people who may be on Medicaid, food stamps, heating assis tance and other programs might not realize that they are eli gible for other forms of aid, too. The hotline is intended to help those individuals take advantage of those programs.

“Inflation has made things difficult for a lot of people who feel overwhelmed and confused about what kind of assistance is available to them,” said Toiv. “People may think the help is not for them, but it is. The help is there for anyone who needs it at the moment to get through this difficult period and get back on their feet.”

Choking Hazard Has Target Recalling Plush Cars

Target is recalling more than 20,000 four-piece plush car sets after receiving multiple reports of tires detaching from the toys, creating a potential choking hazard.

The recall, which affects approximately 23,400 car sets, was announced on December 1 by the Consumer Product Safety

Commission. The soft, knitted products were sold by Target from March through April for about $20 and include a yellow bus, a red tractor, a green truck and a blue car. Each vehicle measures approximately three inches high, three and a half inches wide and six inches long, with a printed bottom tag at tached to its underside bearing item number 030-02-1042.

Target has received four reports of detached tires, and while no injuries have been reported, consumers are advised to take the vehicles away from their children and to return them to any Target store for a full refund. Those who prefer to return the toys by mail can contact Target at 800-440-0680 to get a prepaid return label.

Catskills Deli Destroyed by Fire

A popular South Fallsburg meat market was completely de stroyed last weekend by a fast-moving fire that raged for more than six hours.

The Sullivan Times reported that flames were reported at Boosur Meat & Deli at 5:44 p.m. last Friday afternoon. The twoalarm blaze brought in over a dozen fire companies from all across Sullivan and Ulster counties, with three minor injuries reported and several residents displaced.

Boosur, a year-round establishment located on Main Street in South Fallsburg, opened in 2017. In addition to serving the Catskills, Boosur made deliveries to Kiryas Joel and Monsey, shipped nationwide, and offered full service catering. Accord ing to Hamodia, Boosur owner Yitzchak Hirsch said that he is already scouting out a new location for his store’s reopening and that its catering, which operates from another location, will continue as usual.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

“Good morning. I believe you rented a car to some people I need to locate. Their names are Zachary Ganz and Yisrael Ginz burg. I’d like you to see if you can find your vehicle, please.”

“I’m sorry, are you the police? Do you have a warrant?”

“I’m with the city municipality. These people have stolen a valuable artifact, and we need to find it before they escape. Now, we can sit here and wait for a warrant if you insist. It makes no difference to me. But if these people get away because you didn’t see the right piece of paper, I can promise you there will be consequences…”

“Umm…”

“You know, why should we wait? I want to talk to your supervisor. Immediately. Fetch him. And then you can start looking for a new job.”

“No! I mean, no, sir, that won’t be nec

essary. Let just — what were the names you said before?”

“Zachary Ganz and Yisrael Ginzburg.”

“Okay… Um, I’m not seeing them in our system.”

“Are you sure? Your job depends on it. Check again.”

“No, sir, they’re definitely not in our files, I’m certain.”

“Very well. But if I find out you’re ly ing…”

“I’m not lying, sir. I promise!”

“Okay. We’ll be in touch.”

Lucjan strode out of the rental agency, his back straight and his face forward. The moment he was out of sight, however, his haughty, patronizing demeanor collapsed. Flushed and sweaty despite the cold, he went back to his car and slid into the driv er’s seat.

“This is crazy,” Lucjan said. “I hated that! What if they call the police on me? It was awful! You say you have a friend who plays tricks like this to con people out of

their money. I can’t understand him.” Lucjan shook his head. “Even if it wasn’t stealing, it wouldn’t be worth it. Better to stock shelves in a super market than to have to go through this kind of anxiety.”

“You just have to look confident,” Filip explained. “The Americans call it a confi dence scheme, you know. That’s the whole point: confidence. No body ever ques tions you if you act like you be long there. Trust me, it works every time.”

“The fact that you know so much about this is exactly why I shouldn’t trust you,” Lucjan grumbled.

Filip shifted in his seat, and Luc jan saw a gleam of interest in his brother’s eye. Clearly, Filip was be ginning to enjoy himself. It was a side of his personality Lucjan hadn’t seen before. He began to realize that Filip hadn’t simply ended up on the wrong side of the law by chance. He was drawn to criminal behavior. He liked it.

It made Lucjan’s stomach churn.

“So, did they rent the car to your suspects?”

“No,” Lucjan answered sourly. There were at least fifteen car rental agencies in Lodz. It stood to reason that they wouldn’t have found the right one on the first try. Still, this was a blow. Lucjan wasn’t cut out for this kind of thing. Lying to people, manipulating them, pretending to be an authority… It had left him drained and depressed. The thought that he’d have to do it over and over again was almost more than he could bear.

“Okay, then,” Filip said cheerful ly. He unrolled his map. “Next stop is Express Car Rental. It’s on Zeli gowskiego 8/10…”

Lucjan closed his eyes for a mo ment. Why was all this happening? He breathed deeply and counted to ten, but it didn’t offer any comfort.

“Lucky?”

“Don’t call me that,” Lucjan growled. He opened his eyes and shifted into drive.

“This is the place,” Lenny said.

The Warszawa Hotel was a large, ugly building of Communist-era concrete. Some effort had once been made to paint the place a bright while, with yellow and gray high

lights for contrast. But time and weather had pulled their usual tricks. What was left was a dull gray mono lith without a hint of color. It squatted like a distant cousin at the fringe of a family gathering, desperately claw ing at the illusion of relevance.

Walking together, they entered a narrow room laid with once-ornate wood tiles. A decorative carpet cov ered the center in moss green, except for where the threads had worn away and the ancient wood showed un derneath. A few chairs, too large and ornate to fit the rest of the décor, sat abandoned against the wall. Near by, a plastic plant spread artificial branches from a pot of dirt.

At least the dirt was real.

Lenny led them up a small stair case and down a hallway to his room. He inserted his key — an actual key rather than a digital card — and fought with the lock for a bit.

“It’s a little stiff,” he muttered apol ogetically.

Izzy said nothing.

Finally, the door opened. The room was just large enough. A bed sat against one wall, a desk and two chairs sat against the other, while a closet and a small washroom com pleted the ensuite accommodations. Lenny’s suitcase was crammed into the far corner, its front open. A few items of clothes were strewn haphaz ardly across the top.

“Here we are,” Lenny said ner vously.

Zach glanced around, taking ev erything in. “Where’s the manu

“Desk drawer,” Lenny said sourly. He collapsed onto his bed, his face a mask of exhaustion and lost hope. “Take it, I guess. But don’t expect me to thank you. You’ve ruined me.”

“You ruined yourself,” Zach snapped.

Izzy kept silent. He couldn’t handle any more bickering. He slid open the desk drawer.

The Rebbe’s sefer filled the drawer. Izzy pulled it out carefully. Something welled up inside of him as he looked at it. In a trance, he laid it down rever ently on the table and opened it.

The Rebbe’s handwriting, a tiny, spidery script, was filled with long, sharp lines, bent at a slight angle. It covered the entire page. Izzy tried to read some of it, but the words swam in front of him. A fog had settled on his brain without him realizing it. His limbs felt incredibly heavy.

It had been an awfully long time since he’d slept.

“Zach.”

“Yeah?”

“We gotta daven Shacharis. And I think we should rest a little bit, too. I can’t handle another two hours in the car right now.”

Zach seemed to be on the verge of disagreeing, but then he, too, sagged into one of the chairs. “Yeah, I’m also beat,” he admitted. “Do we have time to rest before the warrant goes out?”

Izzy checked his watch. “She said we have at least a day. It seems like it’s been longer, but it’s actually been less than twelve hours.”

“All right. We’ll book rooms here and crash for a few hours,” Zach decid ed. He turned to Lenny with a hostile look. “We’ll lock the manuscript up in our room, though.”

“I’ll call Aunt Raiza,” Izzy decided. “Give her an update.” He glanced over at Lenny, who had taken out his phone and was staring at it wistfully. “Gimme that.”

“What?” Lenny asked suspiciously.

“Why?”

“Just give it to him!” Zach snarled. His anger was apparently stronger than his fatigue, because he leapt out of his chair and snatched the phone from Lenny’s hand. Then he tossed it to Izzy.

“What are you doing ?!” Lenny shout ed as Izzy popped the back of the phone open and removed the battery.

“Just in case,” Izzy said without explanation. “You’ll get it back later, don’t worry. Zach, can you arrange the rooms? I’ll hold on to the manuscript. We’ll daven, rest for a few hours, and then bounce.”

Zach nodded and left.

Ignoring Lenny’s protests, and his attempt to snatch his battery back, Izzy dialed Raiza. She picked up quickly.

“You have the manuscript?” she asked without preamble.

“You knew?” Izzy said in surprise.

“I’m tracking you and Zach on your phones,” Raiza answered. “You’re with Lenny. Or you were. Lenny’s phone just disappeared.”

“Why are you tracking us?” Izzy de manded angrily.

“Why wouldn’t I?”

He didn’t know what to say to that. He felt outraged, violated in some way. But it did make sense, he admitted to himself. She had to know where they were in case things went south. He tried to contain his anger. “We found the manuscript, yes. But we’re dead tired. We’re going to rest for a few hours before coming back.”

“That’s not a good idea, Izzy. What if —”

“We don’t have much choice,” Izzy replied. “We’re in no condition to go on a long drive. You gave us a day. We’ll be back long before that.”

Raiza wasn’t happy, but there wasn’t much she could do. Just as Izzy said goodbye, Zach returned with room keys. Izzy grabbed the Rebbe’s sefer and they left. to Lodz,” he offered. “Y’know, if you want.”

“Where would I run to?” Lenny asked in a monotone. He lay on his bed and stared at the ceiling. “There’s nowhere to go…”

Izzy had been furious with his cousin, had been ready to throw him to the police just a short time earlier. But watching him lie there now, a broken man, brought up a different emotion. Pity, perhaps?

What kind of life must Lenny have led to end up in a situation like this? Lenny was responsible for his choices, sure. But what laundry list of mistakes, what unending cycle of disappointments and failures, had broken his spirit so far that he was capable of this kind of thing?

“Well, the offer stands,” Izzy said awkwardly. “Don’t forget to daven.”

“Thanks.”

He closed the door with a soft click. The last Izzy saw of Lenny, he was still staring blindly at the ceil ing.

* * * * *

“Good morning. My name is Luc jan Kowalski. I work with the city municipality. We’re investigating a very serious theft. I believe you rented a car to some of the suspected thieves. Their names are Zachary Ganz and Yisrael Ginzburg. I’d like you to see if you can find your vehi cle, please.”

“The city?”

“That’s right. This is my identifi cation card. It’s very important that we locate these people as quickly as possible.”

“Right. Well, let me see… Yes, here we are. A 2017 Skoda Fabia.”

“Finally! I mean, that’s great news!” Lucjan rubbed his hands to gether. “Can you trace the car?”

“We have a GPS tracker installed in the car, sir. I’ll need to go into the back to authorize it, but we should have no problem finding out where the vehicle is.”

“Do that, then,” Lucjan said. “The faster we find these people, the bet ter.”

Recap: Gonzalo bribes one of the sappers to arrange the digging of a side tunnel off the Turkish underground network so he could reach the prison and free Sebastian. They reach the prison wall and loosen some stones. Gonzalo hears a key and peeks in through the crack to see where the guard is headed.

The door creaked open, and the guard came in. Gonzalo heard him more than he saw him. There was no jangle of keys, which told Gonzalo that the guard had not taken the ring off the wall. He heard the heavy footsteps of the guard recede to ward the cells. He heard a single panel open and then slam shut. Then the heavy footsteps returned. The guard had ob viously delivered food to one of the cells.

One of the cells! That meant that there was only one pris oner in the dungeon. He would not have to search through cell after cell to find Sebastian. But wait. Maybe there were others. Maybe the guard would soon return with food for the others. He would have to wait and see.

Gonzalo waited for a half-hour, but all he heard were the whoosh of hundreds of cannonballs and the thunderous explosions that followed. The door to the dungeon did not open again.

Slowly and carefully, Gonzalo removed several rows of stones from the bottom of the wall and crawled through on his belly. He was just about to reach for the keys when he heard a very loud whoosh, and then the cannonball struck the weakened wall at the rear of the dungeon. The entire dungeon shook, and the wall through which Gonzalo had just crawled, weakened by the removal of the lower stones, collapsed right onto Gonzalo and sent him sprawling.

The door flew open, and a guard came running in. Gonzalo tried to struggle free from the pile of stones un

der which his legs were pinned, but he could not budge. He tried to reach for his pistols, but it was futile. There was no way out. He was trapped.

The guard took one look and sounded the alarm. Three guards with muskets at the ready immediately appeared, followed by the captain of the guard.

“Well, look what we have here,” said the captain. “An un expected visitor. It’s a good thing that we have a few empty luxury suites. Lock him up!”

September followed August with no relief in sight for the beleaguered city of Vienna. The hundreds of Turkish cannons belched with fire almost incessantly. There were ragged holes in the walls where the repeated cannon fire had blasted through the thick stones. The sappers had un dermined several bastions and blown them apart with ex plosive charges, leaving glaring gaps in the fortifications. The defenders threw up barricades across the gaps and prepared themselves to fight in the streets of the city.

Kara Mustafa could taste the victory that was almost within his grasp. His army was arrayed to defend itself against the Austrian forces of the Duke of Lorraine and the German forces of Prince Waldek, while at the same time maintaining its pressure on the collapsing defenses of the city. His sappers prepared to set their final explosive charg

es and seal off the tunnels so that the detonation would achieve maximum effect. In a few days, Vienna would lie exposed before his army. The only eventuality that could affect his strategy was the Polish forces, but they had departed from Krakow on 15 August. They would never get to Vienna on time.

The Turkish Vizier, however, had not counted on the military brilliance of Jan Sobieski, the Polish king. He took his army in a forced march straight over the mountains, heading for Vienna almost as the crow flies. The Polish infantry and heavy cavalry, 35,000 strong, arrived on the outskirts of Vienna on 10 September and joined up with the Austrians and the Germans. Sobieski was reaffirmed as commander-in-chief, as had been agreed in Warsaw months earlier.

Kara Mustafa was dismayed to learn that the Polish forces had arrived on the scene before he had finished subduing the city. He fingered the green cord around his neck nervously and improvised a new strategy that would take the new threat into account. He arrayed his army in a broader arc but refused to withdraw the soldiers engaged in the direct attack upon the city. He was deter mined to strike the death blow to the city even as he fought off the armies that had come to its rescue.

The day before the battle, Sobieski inspected the bivouac of the infantry and spoke to his troops about the importance of their mission. They knew that many of them would die, but they were soldiers, and it was expected of them that they give their lives for their King, their country and their faith. Afterward, Sobieski inspected his hussars, the heavy cavalry that were his most potent weapon. The spirit among the hussars was strong; they were eager for battle and confident that their King would lead them to victory.

After his tour of inspection, Sobieski returned to his tent. While he was re viewing the battle plans with his commanders over a few tankards of ale, an aide entered the tent and spoke into the ear of the King.

“Your Majesty, I apologize for the interruption,” he said in a low voice. “A man has shown up in camp who claims to be the King’s old friend. I tried to send him away, but he said the King would be upset if he were not brought in.”

“Who is this man?” said Sobieski. “Did he give you his name?”

“He’s an old Jewish rabbi. He said his name is Strasbourg.”

“Shlomo Strasbourg?”

“I’m not sure, Your Majesty. I’m not familiar with Jewish names.”

“Bring him to me.”

The aide hurried off. Five minutes later, he returned with the Rabbi. The king stood up and embraced the Rabbi in a hearty bear hug.

“Rabbi! It’s so good to see you. Come outside where we can talk privately.” He took the Rabbi by the elbow and led him out of the tent. “What are you doing here in Vienna, Rabbi?”

“I’m visiting my son and his family. He lives in Eggenschlag.”

“Ah, yes, I’ve seen Eggenschlag on the maps. They should be fine. The battle will not reach Eggenschlag.”

“I know, Your Majesty.”

“So what’s on your mind? It must be something very important to bring you here on the eve of a great battle.”

“Yes, Your Majesty. It is.”

“Well, I haven’t forgotten that you saved my life … when was it … sixteen years ago? By all the saints in Heaven, doesn’t life fly by in a flash? Sixteen years! No, I haven’t forgotten that I owe you my life. What can I do for you, Rabbi? What can

you possibly need from me tonight?”

“I am here on behalf of a friend, a young man named Sebastian Domin guez. He is being held in prison in Vi enna.”

“Dominguez? Any relation to the Spanish duke that was burned at the stake?”

“His son.”

“Ah! And now he has been captured in Vienna, and they want to send him back to Spain.”

“Yes. Your Majesty only needs to be told one word to grasp the entire pic ture. The Dominguez family escaped from Spain, but they have been harried and persecuted. And now, this young man came here incognito to speak with me, but he was be trayed and arrested.”

“I see. And when I enter the city in tri umph after the battle is won and the siege is lifted, you want me to set him free.”

“Yes, Your Majesty. The young man and his aide, a Spanish cavalier named Gonzalo Sanchez. They are both in prison.”

Sobieski stroked his ample chin. “Rabbi, I will do you one better,” he said. “Cardinal Pentucci, the papal legate, has promised me that the Church will be forever grateful to me if I come to the defense of Vienna. I will ask him to have all claims and charges against the Dominguez family rescinded and that they be allowed to live as Jews wherever they please without any interference from the Church or any government. I cannot promise you any influence with France, however.”

“France is not our problem. The King of France has extended his pro tection to the Dominguez family.”

“Then consider it done. The Pope will not refuse me any request. Believe me, I also have a list of other requests. He will not get off cheaply, I assure you.”

“Thank you, Your Majesty. I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am.”

“Not as grateful as I am to you for saving my life. What would I do without my life? Where would I be?”

The Rabbi smiled, and the King, amused by his own witticism, burst into jolly laughter. Then he suddenly turned serious.

“There is something I want from you

in return, Rabbi.”

“Anything, Your Majesty.”

The King led the Rabbi to a high knoll overlooking the Turkish encamp ment and the walled city beyond. He lifted his hand and pointed an emphat ic finger in the direction of the city.

“That is the prize, Rabbi,” he said. “That is the reason I have brought tens of thousands of men over the moun tains. Tomorrow, we do battle. I want a glorious victory as much as I’ve ever wanted anything in my life. I want to go down in history as one of the great warrior kings. And do you know what I want from you, Rabbi?”

The rabbi remained silent.

“I want your blessing,” said the King.

“Last time we met, you gave me your blessings for success at Podhajce, and I had a smashing victory. You also told me I would have many more victories and a glorious future. That also came true. Now, when I’m facing the biggest and most important battle of my life, the A-mighty has sent you to me again. There is no doubt in my mind that He is sending me His blessing through you, so please give it to me, Rabbi.”

The Rabbi nodded. “Your wish is my command, Your Majesty,” he said. “May you prosper by the force of your sword. May your enemies fall before you like stalks of wheat before the harvester’s scythe. May the A-mighty bless you and protect you. May He give you a glorious victory and bring you through it un harmed. And may the world recognize your greatness and the nobility of your spirit and remember them for genera tion after generation. May the A-mighty reward your goodness with a good and long life.”

Sobieski was quiet for a few mo ments. “Thank you, Rabbi,” he said in a grave voice. “Before, I was confident that we would win. Now, I am sure of it.”

TANTALIZING TONGUE TOWER

TANTALIZING TONGUE TOWER

This appetizer will get your party off to a super elegant, lip-smacking start.

TASTY TONGUE

1 pickled tongue

1 T. vinegar

DIRECTIONS

1. Remove the tongue from the packaging, and place it in a large pot.

2. Cover it with water, and cook it with the vinegar (for easier peel ing) for approximately 3 hours.

3. Peel the tongue while it’s hot.

4. Refrigerate the tongue over night, and then slice it thinly.

Note: You can freeze the cooked tongue until assembly. To rewarm, heat it in a bit of water.

CRANBERRY SAUCE

½ (16 oz.) can whole berry cranberry sauce

½ (21 oz.) can cherry pie filling

2 tsp. prepared chrein

2 T. ketchup

2 T. honey

1 T. soy sauce

⅓ cup craisins

DIRECTIONS

1. Place all the sauce ingredients into a pot, and bring them to a boil.

2. Simmer for 5 to 10 minutes until the sauce has thickened.

Note: This can be made 3 to 4 days in advance and stored in the fridge.

You can also try this recipe with a pickled dark turkey roll.

LATKE KUGEL

3 potatoes, grated

1½ cups mashed potatoes (approximately 2 potatoes, cooked and mashed)

5 eggs

4 T. breadcrumbs

2 T. flour

1½ T. salt

¼ tsp. black pepper

½ small onion, very finely grated Oil for frying

DIRECTIONS

1. Place all ingredients in a large bowl, and mix to combine.

2. Heat oil in a frying pan over medium-high heat.

3. Fry the latkes in the desired size until they’re golden on one side.

4. Flip the latkes, lower the heat, and fry until they’re crisp and golden.

Note: If you want a perfect kugel form, you can use a frying pan with four individual cups. You can also add ⅓ cup oil to the recipe and bake the batter in individual round pans.

FRIED NOODLES GARNISH

1 (7 oz.) package vermicelli rice noodles Oil for frying

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat the oil in a deep pot until it’s very hot but not burning.

2. Break off a small cluster of noodles, and drop these into the hot oil.

3. After a couple of seconds, as the noodles puff up, flip them to the other side.

4. Remove them from the pot and set them aside to drain.

Note: It is fascinating for kids to watch these rice noodles pop instantly.

SUCCULENT FLANKEN ROAST

An upgraded addition to your hot food station. Thank you, Mr. Taub at Yossi’s Cuts, for your expert tips.

INGREDIENTS

1 (3–4 lb.) flanken roast

2 onions, chopped Salt and pepper, to taste

2–3 T. honey.

1 (8 oz.) container of your favorite tomato dip

2 cups Cabernet wine (I used Ram’s Head)

1 T. coffee granules

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 250°.

2. Line a deep 9x13” pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on both sides.

3. Lay the onions on the bottom.

4. Season the meat on both sides with salt, pepper and honey, massaging the spices into the meat.

5. Place the meat on the onions, then pour the tomato dip over the meat.

6. Dissolve the coffee in the wine by shaking them in a (32 oz.) covered container, and add to the pan.

7. Cover the pan with another layer of parchment paper and then tightly with silver foil.

8. Bake for 8 hours.

9. Allow meat to cool thoroughly before slicing thinly.

ZESTY CITRUS CHICKEN

An incredibly tasty crowd-pleaser!

INGREDIENTS

2 lb. chicken tenders

¾ cup cornstarch

¾ cup flour

½ tsp. salt

Dash of black pepper

2 eggs

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut the chicken tenders into quarters by cutting each in half lengthwise, then in half widthwise.

2. Mix together the cornstarch, flour, salt and pepper in a shallow bowl.

3. Whisk the eggs in a separate bowl.

4. Dip the chicken in the eggs, then in the cornstarch mixture.

5. Heat 2 inches of oil in a pot, and deepfry the chicken tenders until they’re golden on both sides.

ORANGE SAUCE

1 cup orange juice

¼ cup lemon juice

⅓ cup vinegar

3 T. soy sauce

1 T. orange zest (wash the orange very well)

1 cup brown sugar

1 frozen ginger cube

1 frozen garlic cube

3 T. cornstarch ¼ cup cold water

DIRECTIONS

1. Mix all the sauce ingredients except the cornstarch and water in a small saucepan over medium heat until it boils.

2. Dilute the cornstarch in water. Add to the saucepan. Allow to simmer, mixing, until the sauce thickens.

3. Pour the sauce over the hot chicken just before serving

4. Serve with crushed pepper flakes and scallions.

CAULIFLOWER PASTRAMI BRAIDS

Yield: 16 to 18 knishes

These present as absolute stunners. They are packed with flavor and a nice change from classic potato knishes.

INGREDIENTS

1 (24 oz.) bag frozen cauliflower

1 potato

1 clove garlic

1 onion, diced

½ lb. pastrami, chopped

2 T. flour

1½ tsp. salt

1 egg

1 T. mustard

20 (2 packages) 5” flaky dough squares

1 egg, for brushing

DIRECTIONS

1. Place the cauliflower, potato and garlic in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil, and cook until the vegetables are fork-tender. Drain and mash.

2. Meanwhile, saute the onions in oil until they’re well done and golden. Add the pas trami, and saute for an additional 15 minutes, stirring every so often.

3. Add the pastrami to the cauliflower mixture, and allow to cool.

4. Add the flour, salt, egg and mustard. Mix until combined.

5. Place approximately 2 to 3 tablespoons of the filling down the center third of each flaky dough square, leaving space at the top and bottom.

6. Cut six to eight slits on each of the two empty sides

7. Lift the two bottom slits, and fold them di agonally upward over the filling to create an x.

8. Do the same starting at the top, cross ing over both sides of the slits downward and braiding them, until you reach the bottom.

9. Brush with the egg wash, and bake at 350° for 35 minutes until golden.

Note: You can use this filling for any knish shape, or even a large roll, too.

FARFALLE LO MEIN

Hearty and delicious!

INGREDIENTS

2 (10 oz.) packages bowtie noodles

1 (1 lb.) bag frozen stir-fry vegetables

½ lb. frozen pepper strips

1 (16 oz.) can button mushrooms

½ cup oil

1 cup soy sauce

½ cup brown sugar

DIRECTIONS

1. Cook the pasta a la dente ac cording to package instructions.

2. Preheat the oven to 350°.

3. Cut each mushroom in half. Place the vegetables in a 10x16” pan along with the oil, soy sauce and brown sugar. Cover and bake for 30 minutes.

4. Add the pasta and bake, covered, for another hour, mixing after 30 minutes.

BLACK, WHITE AND RED ALL OVER SALAD

The unique blend of ingredients is both eye-catching and full of flavor — and complements the decor beautifully!

INGREDIENTS

2 (8 oz.) bags Romaine lettuce

1 (14 oz.) can hearts of palm

½ (19 oz.) can black olives

8 radishes

1½ red pepper

1 large bag beet sticks Ready lemon-garlic dressing

DIRECTIONS

1. Cut all the vegetables into uni form cubes. (A chopper makes this quick and easy.)

2. Mix to combine, and season with dressing. Sprinkle chips on top.

Or, for for a striking presentation, place the lettuce on a platter, squeeze the lemon-garlic dress ing over the lettuce, and lay the vegetables in stripes on top.

Greece is home to many famous geological sites. From deep gorges to beautiful rock forma tions and plateaus, all sculpted by the Natural Artist Who employs wind and water erosion, there’s plenty to explore in Greece. Come join our virtual tour!

VIKOS GORGE

Soft, moss-like greenery grows along the rocky walls of Vikos Gorge, the steepest-to-deepest canyon on record in the world. Rare herbs and flowers also find their homes along the towering sides of the gorge.

Looking down its nearly 3,000-foot depth can make you lightheaded (don’t drop anything!). But if you dare to chance a peek, you’ll see water flow ing through it. This is the Voidomatis River, which is known as the clearest waterway in Europe. The Voidomatis River and the Vikos Gorge are landmarks that are part of the gorgeous scenery in Vikos-Aoos National Park. Visitors to the park often choose to go rafting down the river through the gorge, which is a relaxing way to enjoy its sights.

SKAROS ROCK

The distinctive shape of this rock formation gives you a clue to its origin. Skaros Rock is a volcanic plug, created by lava cooling inside a volcano while on its way up. This lava stayed intact even as the surrounding rocky mountain eroded, leaving behind a monument to the volcano’s one-time existence.

Visitors can hike to this rock formation on the beach just before sunset to take in the views of the fiery sun setting over its stony face. Skaros Rock can be seen for miles around by land and sea. Popular boat rides near the coast stop to enjoy the view from afar.

This rock used to be home to the most important defensive castle on the island. A small city of people lived right below the rock. When earth quakes in the early 18th century sent houses built on the side of the cliff tumbling into the sea, the area was abandoned.

LASITHI PLATEAU

Most famous for the thousands of windmills whose blades turn along with the frequent winds in the area, Lasithi Plateau is fertile ground for crops. Its local inhabitants are mostly farmers, who created their distinctively designed wind mills to act as pumps. The power of the windmills brings up water from underground wells to irrigate their crops.

Visitors like to buy Lasithi’s homegrown pota toes, which form one of the major harvests on the plateau. They often also get to see shepherds leading their flocks of sheep up to the top of the plateau to graze.

PAPINGO ROCK POOLS

Rushing waters have carved natural “bathtubs” into this limestone rock over the years. In the sum mer, the “tubs” fill up, turning into deep blue pools full of pristine water.

Even when the pools are empty, it’s fascinating to see the smoothly sculpted stone ripples, which seem as if they were poured from concrete. Visi tors can hike up a scenic route and then continue to the waterfall that rushes down in another part of the rock pools.

KORAKONISSI

Shimmering blue waters invite visitors to enter the picturesque little hideaway this rocky island offers. The natural rock arch is over 20 yards tall and sur rounds an inlet of water. A water cave under the rocks dares the intrepid to explore by snorkeling or swim ming through its depths. The waters are full of hun dreds of colorful fish that swim alongside snorkelers.

Another reason people love visiting Korakonissi is to get an up-close view of its waters. The waters in the bay are a deep turquoise blue, like a sparkling jewel in the silver setting of the arch.

KOMOLITHI

If you think you know what Planet Earth looks like, think again! You can easily imagine you are on the moon when you see these clay pyramids rising suddenly out of the earth in front of you. But no, this isn’t something from another planet. It’s simply another wonder of the natural world we live in. Because of the composition of the soil in this area, erosion over the years wore away the softer clay. Only the harder stone remained, leading to these strange yet beauti ful formations.

KAISER’S THRONE

You can see a panoramic 360-de gree view when you climb the steps leading to this natural stone monument at the top of the cliffs in Pelekas, one of Greece’s many islands.

This lookout point is called Kaiser’s Point, or Kaiser’s Throne. It was named after Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany, who built his summer castle at this location. The views from the towering rock are definite ly worthy of a royal designation.

SAMARIA GORGE

A six-hour hike through the Samaria Gorge takes you straight to the Libyan Sea. It’s a rocky path through a ravine, with steep slopes to conquer right at the beginning of the walk. After reach ing their destination, many tourists board one of the waiting boats and sail off to another nearby island.

This gorge is also the result of water erosion, carved by the flowing waters of the River Tar raios. More water runs down the sides of the gorge in the form of springs, which is so clear that hikers drink from the springs to quench their thirst as they make their way through the gorge.

SKIADI ROCK

This is also called Mushroom Rock, for good reason. This kind of rock formation is caused by a process called ablation, in which the wind erodes the dust at the bottom of the rock. The bottom layers of rock are softer than the top layers, which leads to a mushroom shape as a result.

Skiadi Rock is located on the island of Kimolos. Visitors can take a short walk through a wilder ness to reach the place where the Mushroom Rock seems to grow out of the earth.

BLUE CAVES OF ZAKYNTHOS

Among Greece’s most famous geological wonders are its many blue caves. These caves were carved by the sea along the Greek coastline and often form a series of natural arches. Boats can pass through the arches to explore the inside of the sea caves. Some have large stalactites hanging from the ceiling like chandeliers.

These caves are called blue caves because of the way the light reflects inside of them. As soon as you enter the cave, everything you see, including other people around you, will start glowing blue. It’s an eerie phenomenon that leaves visitors with lasting memories.

Following the sudden death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE, his Greek empire was divided among several of his generals. Seleucus was given the territory of Syria and Mesopotamia; Ptolemy was given Egypt. Eretz Yisroel was caught in the middle and contested by Egypt and Syria. In 200 BCE, at the battle of Panium at the foot of the Go lan Heights, the Syrian Greeks defeated the Egyptian Greeks, and Ju dah — Eretz Yisroel — came solidly under the rule of Antiochus III, the Syrian-Greek ruler. The Yidden were instrumental in aiding the Syr ians in their fight, and as a sign of appreciation, they were granted re ligious liberty and autonomy. They even received an generous annual grant of funds to be used toward the upkeep of the Beis Hamikdash.

Despite being allowed religious freedom, or perhaps because of it, many Yidden were seduced by the Greek culture and lifestyle. The im perial culture of philosophy and science, of the theater and athletics, offered a route to political and material advancement. This led to the formation of the Misyavnim among the Jewish population. This Helle nization (the word is derived from Hellas, the Greek name for Greece) produced severe tensions between frum Jews who remained steadfast in their beliefs, and their brethren who succumbed and assimilated into the folds of Greek culture.

Fast forward 32 years; the king of Syria was now Antiochus IV. He did not share his father’s favorable attitude toward the Yidden and was determined to bring semi-autono mous Eretz Yisroel firmly into the embrace of Hellenism. He invaded the Holy City, loot ed the Beis Hamikdash treasury, and killed thousands of Yerushalayim’s residents. Reli gious rites and practices were outlawed, pun ishable by death. The Beis Hamikdash was polluted, plunging the frum Yidden into a state

Antiochus IV ordered the construction of a great fortress, which was more like a miniature city, to oversee Yerusha layim and its Beis Hamikdash. The fortress was built on a great rock that rose up from the ground, and it was manned by Syrian soldiers and their Misyavni sympathizers. The for tress was called the Acra, Greek for “rock outcropping,” and its militia terrorized the frum Yidden of Yerushalayim and at tacked any of the steadfast lingering in the vicinity of the Beis Hamikdash.

and his Maccabi sons was raised. They dedicated themselves to fighting the Syrians and the Hellenistic culture that had invaded their country. Hashem blessed the endeavors of the Maccabim, and around the year 164 BCE, Yehudah Hamac cabi liberated Yerushalayim and rededicated the Beis Hamikdash. It was then that the great miracle of the Meno rah’s oil occurred. However, even after many unsuccessful attempts, the Maccabim were unable to subdue the threat of the dreaded Acra Fortress and its Misyavnim. It remained a thorn in their side.

Finally, in 141 BCE, Yehudah’s brother Shimon besieged

the fortress, and on the 23rd day of Iyar, Shimon ousted the soldiers and their Hellenized Jewish compatriots. A yom tov was proclaimed on the 23rd of Iyar and celebrated for many years. Eretz Yisroel was free! The Maccabim assumed the throne and founded the priestly Chashmonai Dynasty.

Where was the Acra located in Yerushalayim? Josephus (a famous Jewish historian of the time) tells us that when Shimon Hamaccabi captured the Acra, he had it razed — and the great rock upon which it stood was quarried and removed. That means we should not expect to find any ar chaeological traces of it, but that does not stop scholars from speculating. Here is a sampling of opinions:

1. Benjamin Mazar, the “dean” of Israeli Biblical archaeolo gists, placed the Acra adjacent to the outside southeastern corner of Har Habayis. He based his opinion on some Greek-style masonry found in that area.

2. Yoram Tsafrir, archaeologist, former profes sor at the Hebrew University in Yerushalayim and adviser to the group that made the Holy land model of ancient Yerushalayim, placed the Acra near Professor Mazar’s location in the southeastern corner but within the walls of the Har Habayis. His opinion was based on a large cistern found under the surface of the Har Habayis in that section.

3. Koen Decoster, Belgian historian, places the fortress north of Har Habayis. The ground level is higher in that area and would be more suit able for a fortress.

4. Meir Ben Dov, noted Israeli archaeologist and

author, proposes a location adjacent to the middle of the southern Beis Hamikdash wall, right outside the Chuldah Gate. His speculation rests on the ruins of a large ancient structure and cistern found there.

5. Bezalel Bar-Kokhva, lecturer at Tel Aviv University, argues that the Acra was erected in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City. The Jewish Quarter is much higher than any other area of the Old City, including the Har Habayis, and would certainly be an excellent strategic location.

6. Edward Robinson, noted American scholar and discover er of Robinson’s Arch and Masada, placed the Acra squarely in the Christian Quarter of the Old City, probably because he was a Christian.

In November 2015, the Israel Antiquities Authority an nounced what they definitively believed to be the location of the Acra. It is several hundred feet south of the Southern Temple Mount Wall, in the archaeological so-called “City of David.” There, archaeologists Doron Ben-Ami, Yana Tchek hanovets and Salome Cohen were excavating in the Givati parking lot and unexpectedly unearthed a vast complex of rooms and fortified walls, which they identified as the lost Acra.

They found fortification walls and the base of a watch tower measuring 12 feet by 65 feet. In the debris were Greek-style bronze arrowheads and lead slingstones. These stones were stamped with a trident, a three pronged pitchfork, which was the emblem of the evil Antiochus IV. These are indicative of the military nature of the site and the efforts to take it. The excavation also yielded coins from the reigns of Antiochus IV through Antiochus VII, as well as a multitude of Hellenstic-style jug fragments.

Though this last view as to the location of the Acra is presently the most widely accepted, pri marily because there is tangible evidence rather than mere speculation, it suffers from two main drawbacks. The first is that Shimon Hamaccabi razed the fortress, including the base and the great rock upon which it stood. There should be no remains! Second, Josephus wrote that from the top of the Acra tower, guards could see into the compound of the Beis Hamikdash. The ground level from the base of the Southern Temple Wall and southward slopes down at a very steep angle. If the Givati Parking Lot dig, in the “City of Da

vid” south of the Southern Temple Wall, is the true location, the tower of the Acra would have had to be at least 22 to 25 stories high to see over the Southern Temple Wall into the Temple Compound. Very unlikely.

So, the true location of the accursed Acra Fortress re mains undetermined. Though the remnants of the Devil’s Fortress have been erased from the land of Eretz Yisroel, the memory of the Maccabim — their brave dedication, their Divine reward of victory, and the miracle of the Menorah — remains vibrant and celebrated in our homes throughout all these thousands of years.

d. With a crowd this size, you need something to pull things together, or it’ll look like an international air port on a bad day. I’d hire kumzitzers for the males to sing along, and a ballooner or moonwalk for the kids.

7. WHAT ABOUT GIFTS?

a. We don’t do Chanukah gifts. But we compensate on Rosh Chodesh, Lag Ba’omer and at kapparos-shluggen

b. The fact that we can all hock together with just ourselves and no appendages is a gift enough!

c. Gifts are the grandparents’ domain. We shall discreetly keep out and un-dis creetly stage-whisper to our kids to say thank you.

Winter is upon us, which means Chanukah is around the corner!

This time of the year evokes visions of hot drinks in mugs, chunky sweaters, cozy blankets and fireplaces. It’s also the perfect time to gather around the table with family and friends to paint.

Painting together — or alone — has many benefits. Most importantly, it stops the chatter in your brain and gives you a chance to be present with yourself and connect to others.

While the opportunity to pick up a paintbrush used to be reserved only for highly skilled professionals, today art is accessible to individuals of all ages and ability levels. Take the time to explore the creative parts of yourself, and you’ll be surprised at how much fun the process is — and how beautiful the outcome can be!

Please note: The following instructions are for personal use only.

There is no right or wrong way to paint! Each person’s painting will look different. Remember to ENJOY THE PROCESS instead of being focused on the results.

SUPPLIES

The following supplies can all be found in housewares, craft supply, or discount department stores.

Kraft butcher paper roll

Electrical tape

Red plastic cups

Chalkboard stickers

11x14” canvas, one per person

Large flat paintbrush, one per person

Medium round paintbrush, one per person

Thin paintbrush, one per person

Small plastic palettes (or plastic or paper plates)

Acrylic paints in the following colors: blue, white, black, yellow, orange, red

½”-wide masking tape

Paper towels

Baby wipes

SETTING UP

1. Cover your table with butcher paper to keep it from getting dirty. You can use electrical tape to secure the butcher paper to your table.

2. Fill the cups with water. These will be used to clean your brushes while you paint. For fun decor, stick chalkboard stickers on the cups so they serve as place cards.

3. Place a bit of each color paint onto the palettes, and make sure to have some paper towels and baby wipes handy.

A NOTE ABOUT ACRYLICS

Acrylic paint is not washable. Make sure to dress appropriately and/or wear smocks. Aprons usually don’t protect clothes well enough.

If clothes do get dirty, wash them immediately with soap and water.

4. Turn on your favorite music and enjoy!

TIPS!

As long as the paint is still wet, you can use baby wipes to fix mistakes. Keep the brushes in the water while they are not in use.

You will need to take a break to wait for the first layer of paint to dry (after Step 4). This is the perfect time to serve drinks and refreshments. Make sure to keep the drinks away from the paintings and supplies. You don’t want to dip your brushes into champagne or drink your paint water!

STEP 1:

Place masking tape in the spots where the candles should be.

Each piece of tape should be about 5 to 6 inches long. Start with the center space for the shamash, and then stick four pieces of tape on either side.

Make sure the tape sticks well to the canvas.

STEP 2:

Starting in the center of your canvas, squeeze a few dots of white paint in a basic circular shape. Follow with two more circles around the first one, using dots of blue paint.

Finish with a dot of black paint in every corner.

STEP 3:

Starting from the center, move your large flat brush in a circular motion, making bigger and bigger circles as you blend your colors. Stop when you have blended some of your white and blue. Clean your brush and start again from the center. Do this as many times as you need until the colors are well blended.

Now continue with the outer edge. Blend the blue and black paint in a circular motion. Continue blending until all the colors are well blended.

STEP 4:

Dip the medium round brush into water. Let it soak up a lot of water. Then fill all the bristles with white paint. Hold this paintbrush horizontally about 6 inches above the painting with your non-dominant hand. Use another brush to tap the wooden part of the brush near the bristles. Move the brush around as you cover your painting with white speckles. Let your painting rest for approximately 15 minutes. Continue with the next step once this layer is dry.

STEP 5:

Peel off the paper tape.

STEP 6:

Use any color to fill in the spaces left by the tape. These will be the candles. Paint each candle with two layers of paint. Use the colors of your choice. Add white to any color to lighten the shade.

Create green by mixing blue and yellow.

Create purple by mixing blue and red.

Create peach by mixing yellow, red and white.

Create pink by mixing red and white.

STEP 7:

Use black paint and your thin brush to make a small line at the top of each candle. These will be the wicks.

STEP 8:

Take the medium round brush. Dip it into yellow paint and then into white paint.

Create the flame by placing the tip of your brush at the top of the wick. Then drag your paintbrush upward about a half an inch to create the flame.

STEP 9:

Congratulations! You are now ready to sign your painting!

Greek Salad

Contrary to what you might think, the Greeks weren’t noshing on Greek salad while building their gymnasiums. In fact, Greek salad wasn’t even a thing until the 1900s! There’s some debate over how exactly Greek salad started, but we know it’s definitely not a very old minhag since tomatoes, which are a key ingredient, have been in Greece for barely two centuries. In Greece, the salad is called horiatiki, meaning village or peasant salad, since poor farmers and villagers would wrap their veggies in a cloth and carry that out to the fields to eat during the day. Some say the Greek salad was put together by restaurants in Athens, Greece, in the 1960s and included specific vegetables to bypass taxes on other ingredients.

Traditional Greek salad contains tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, green peppers, olives and feta cheese, and it is dressed in olive oil and sprinkled with oregano. Notice that the original recipe does not contain lettuce, since locals only ate what was in season, and they didn’t always have lettuce available.

Greek Yogurt

If you’re a yogurt connoisseur, you’ll know that Greek yogurt, called straggisto in Greek, is thicker and heavier than regular yogurt. But is it truly Greek? And what gives it its thicker texture?

Greek yogurt is made by straining yogurt through a mesh cloth to remove the whey, or liquid, leaving less moisture in the yogurt. This causes the texture of the yogurt to get denser, without changing the taste. Some say that Greek yogurt is healthier than regular yogurt since it usually has less sugar and fewer carbs than regular yogurt.

Contrary to what the name suggests, this technique wasn’t even started by the Greeks. There are Greek records from the 5th century BCE discussing this straining method, but they weren’t the ones to come up with it. It was already being done in the Middle East at the time to make labneh, though labneh is strained even more so its texture is closer to stiff cream cheese than the yogurt we’re familiar.

Ancient Greek Cuisine

The ancient Greek menu was comparative to what we have today. They had three main meals and ate a variety of vegetables, fish, meat, cheese and bread. The difference is that they accompanied everything they ate with… wine. A popular breakfast choice was bread dipped in… wine, of course. Since their bread was made of barley and therefore thicker than regular bread, they dipped it in wine to soften it up and make it easier to chew. Lunch was usually a lighter meal consisting of nuts, cheese or fish — along with a cup of wine.

Dinner, like today, was the main meal and included an array of different foods. They would have a spread of eggs, fish, beans, bread and a variety of whatever vegetables they had in season. Meat was generally eaten only by the wealthy, or saved for very special occasions. Ancient Greeks also used honey as a sweetener, and they would drizzle it over nuts or olives as dessert. And, of course, they washed it all down with another trusty cup of wine.

Greeks and Olive Oil

Our association with the Greeks and olive oil takes us to the Chanukah story, of course, but olive oil does play a large role in Greek cuisine. The Greek are experts on extra-virgin olive oil and have been using it in their cooking since ancient times. Extra-virgin olive oil is the least processed form of olive oil, and it contains the most antioxidants and boasts the lowest acidity levels. Until today, Greece is one of the top three producers, and the top per capita consumer, of extra-virgin olive oil in the world.
