A New Concept, But So Simple. TORAH ADMIRATION IS REIMAGINED AT JPLAK As Siyum Hashas Nears, Jplak Is Helping Families Commemorate the Occasion with the Presentation That Will Last a Lifetime
By Y. Blooming
We’ve all been there. A major event or occasion is nearing and you are tasked with finding that perfect gift. Pushy store owners pressure you to overspend, you are unsure of what would be appropriate, and worst of all, you’re not entirely certain that the recipient will have any interest in what you’ve bought. You console yourself that if they don’t like it, they can regift it to someone else. Deep down, you’d actually prefer that, to having it end up misplaced and then thrown out before Pesach. Does it have to be this way? As a writer whose superpowers will never include gift-giving, I certainly thought so. But artists are never content with what is; instead, they turn their eyes towards what if. Where most people see a white wall, artists see a beautiful canvas, and
where we see boring presents with short lifespans, they see an opportunity for something meaningful and everlasting. One such artist is the talented Mendy Braun, he has earned a reputation as the premier American artist in the realm of Judaic art. Mendy has developed a novel approach on how to express everlasting admiration. Nowhere is it more relevant than now, as Klal Yisroel prepares for the Siyum Hashas. On his invitation, I took a recent afternoon off, and together with a few others visited the Jplak manufacturing plant to actually see what the buzz is all about.
Don’t just celebrate. Commemorate. “What kind of gift can you possibly give to a husband or father who has just completed the biggest marathon a Yid can run? First, he probably doesn’t want or need a gift. Second, there is nothing that can come close to properly match the enormity of the occasion. Third, it seems wrong to use a materialistic item to celebrate such a lofty and spiritual endeavor.” As the owner and chief designer of Jplak - a producer of high-quality artifacts made of acrylic - Mendy has developed a line of magnificent plaques that can be custom engraved with a personal commemoration for the momentous occasion. These plaques will be presented to those making a Siyum, and unlike a traditional gift, will serve as a long-lasting testament to their accomplishment.
Why Jplak? Why now? Jplak has long been a leader in designing and manufacturing plaques and signs for many organizations, corporations, and other large institution. Their success in this niche field is now translating to the personal domain as well. The community’s response to this has been incredible. Jplak was forced to extend its hours and hire additional staff to accommodate the influx of orders. “We’ve been working overtime and don’t plan to stop anytime soon,” says Yoni - manager of sales and development. “Baruch Hashem, the feedback we’ve received has been

unanimously positive, and people are blown away by the innovative idea and even more so by the striking beauty of the plaques.
The customers’ requests vary, which is why the Jplak team is offering a choice of sizes and other customization options for many items. In example, the Sha’ar Vilna plaques are available in multiple sizes, ranging from 10 inches by 15 inches up to 16 inches by 24 inches. you can also write your own message or choose from a variety of preset texts.
The company developed a range of bold and striking acrylic plaques that individuals can present to their favorite Loimed at their Siyum Hashas, in true Jplak style. There are a number of beautiful designs and options available, including their Sha’ar Vilna option which brings the iconic design to life as a lasting memory of the Mesayem’s dedication to Torah learning over the past 7 ½ years. Another popular option is the line of plaques featuring photos of Rabbi Meir Shapiro Z”L, The Chofetz Chaim Z"L, or other eye-catching images related to Daf Yomi learning. Jplak is also offering the option to purchase a plaque with a personal photo of the learner or his shiur; an image which will speak more than a thousand words for years and decades to come. The list of available styles extends beyond just plaques. The company is also making available acrylic Birchas Hamazon holders and tablets, table clocks and more.
Is it just a better gift idea? In our conversations with Mr. Braun, a common theme emerged. It appears that buyers are not looking at these plaques as mere gifts but rather as a commemorative item which will serve as a testament to the sacrifice made by the Torah learner and the tremendous accomplishment of making it to the finish line. A woman who ordered a large plaque shares her feelings thusly: “My husband indeed did all the learning but the sacrifice was the entire family’s!” she continues, “I can’t even count how many nights I was overwhelmed and truly needed help, but I was proud to hold down the fort myself because I valued having a Torah’dig home. My children love to spend time with their busy father, but they knew that when it’s time for Tatty to run to his shiur, that took first priority.“It would make little sense to buy him a
The Acrylic Limerick There was a man who stayed on track And finished Shas with no setback His wife racked her brain And searched in vain ‘Till she found acrylic at Jplak Torah Admiration Eternalized With only days to go before Daf Yomi finishes Shas and kicks off a festive month of Siyumim around the world, Jplak is being inundated with online order requests from eager family members, friends, colleagues, shiur members and others who wish to get their orders ready before their big day. The team work tirelessly to provide every customer with that magnificent signature Jplak touch. As we get ready to leave the Jplak plant, a member of our group comments that it feels strange to sense such a Torah atmosphere in a busy manufacturing plant. Mr. Braun pauses a moment and responds, “Well, isn’t that what Daf Yomi is all about?” I nod. Indeed it is. Indeed.

RE: IT SAVED OUR HOME (Inbox, Issue 14) In response to the letter regarding the importance of owning a fire extinguisher, where the letter-writer shares her experience using one to put out a fire in her oven, please know this: While fire extinguishers can be lifesaving for small fires beginning outside of the oven, the below is what to do for a fire inside the oven or inside a pot. Keep the oven door closed, or place the pot cover firmly onto the pot (only if it is the correct cover without any steam hole and therefore completely seals the pot from air). The lack of oxygen will cause the fire to starve itself, and it will extinguish on its own. In addition, for small fires outside an oven/pot, baking soda will also smother fire. N.G.

COOKING REQUIRED? (Re: Chickpeas, Please!, Issue 07) Thank you for your most interesting and informative magazine. Several weeks ago, in your issue on baby boys, shalom zachors and chickpeas, you featured a recipe for homemade falafel. It included detailed instructions, but it didn’t say anywhere that the chickpeas need to be cooked. I wanted to clarify if this is indeed correct or whether there was an omission. Y.K. LEAH STERN RESPONDS: To attain the texture and flavor of authentic falafel balls, the chickpeas do not require any cooking prior to mixing it with the rest of the ingredients, only soaking.
WRONG TIME FOR WRONG NUMBERS Winter is here, and that means snow days and calling weather hotlines to check on the status of school closings. It seems like I have a similar number to one school’s weather hotline, since every time it snows I get a few calls early in the morning, sometimes even before 6:00 a.m.! I’d like to ask that every parent please let their bachurim and children know to double-check the number before they call, especially early morning. Thanks in advance and a gezunte winter! PA RS H A S VAY I GA S H R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlita, told a story of a man from Eretz Yisroel whom we’ll call Reuven. Reuven’s first child had become engaged, but he did not have the money to cover the expenses of the chasunah. So Reuven approached his rebbe for advice, and the rebbe advised him to travel to America to collect money. However, the man had never done any fundraising before, and he did not know how to proceed. “Rebbe, I would not know where to begin, replied Reuven. “I have never before engaged in fundraising. “You must do your hishtadlus, the rebbe informed him. “Traveling to America to raise the money is your hishtadlus. You do not need to know the exact way that Hashem will help you. And so, Reuven set out for America, placing his trust in Hashem. He arrived in a frum community and went straight to a beis midrash with his luggage in hand. Right away, a man, whom we’ll call Shimon, came over to greet Reuven and inquired as to the purpose of his visit to America. Reuven told Shimon that he had come to raise money to marry off his child. Shimon asked Reuven how much money he needed to raise, and Reuven told him
the amount. Shimon then asked if Reuven had a place to stay while he was in America, and Reuven told him that he had only just arrived; he did not yet have a place to stay, and neither did he know anybody. Shimon then extended an invitation to Reuven to stay with him, and Reuven was grateful to accept the generous offer. After a few days, Shimon handed Reuven an envelope. Reuven was astounded to see that the envelope contained the entire amount of money that he needed to raise! Reuven had done his hishtadlus and placed his trust in Hashem, and Hashem had helped him more speedily than he could have dreamed, and in a way he could not have imagined. R’ Biderman points out that this is in fulfillment of the teachings of the Rebbe R’ Pinchas of Koritz, who taught: “When a person trusts in Hashem, Hashem helps in ways never imagined. A year or two passed, and Reuven’s second child became engaged. Reuven was not worried — he still had Shimon’s address. Reuven boarded a plane to America, content in his assumption that Shimon would donate the funds that Reuven needed to
Reuven was astounded to see that envelope contained the entire amount of money that he needed to raise! marry off this child, just as Shimon had done with the previous child. Reuven indeed found Shimon, and he explained the reason for his visit. When Shimon handed Reuven eighteen dollars, a far cry from his previous donation, Reuven was shocked. Why would Shimon give only eighteen dollars, when he had previously given him tens of thousands of dollars? Shimon explained to Reuven that he was not a wealthy man, and had not been wealthy when he’d paid for the chasunah for Reuven’s child. However, one of Shimon’s close relatives had

fallen gravely ill, so Shimon had made a kabbalah that he would supply all the needs of the very first needy person he’d encounter. That person had been Reuven. Since Shimon was not wealthy, he’d hosted Reuven for several days while he sold off assets to raise the entire sum. Shimon had davened that his tzedakah be a zechus for a refuah sheleimah, and baruch Hashem, Shimon’s relative completely recovered. However, Shimon explained to Reuven that he could not make such a donation again. Instead, he would donate eighteen dollars, as was his usual custom whenever a meshulach came to ask for a donation, which was already a stretch for him financially. R’ Biderman explains that the difference in Reuven’s two trips was that the first time Reuven traveled to America, he placed his trust in Hashem, whereas the second time he traveled to America, he placed his trust in Shimon. Not surprisingly, the outcomes of the two trips were quite different. It says in this week’s parsha that Yosef Hatzaddik supported his father and brothers in Mitzrayim “l’fi hataf — according to the children.” Rashi explains that Yosef supported each family based on how many children it had. The word Yosef is a known allusion to Hashem, and the word taf can mean “looking.” The Sfas Emes explains that we are sustained according to how much we look to Hashem and place our trust in Hashem, as it says in Tehillim, “The eyes of all look to You with hope, and You give them their food in its time” (Tehillim 145:15). May we all turn our eyes with hope and trust to the One Who sustains us all.

Eichenstein Criticizes Con Ed for Proposed Rate Hike In a letter written to the chairman of the state’s Public Service Commission, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein slammed Con Edison for its plans to raise gas and electricity rates over the next three years. Eichenstein took the utility company to task for offering subpar service at sky-high prices, noting that New York City residents are paying the fifth-highest rates for electricity in the nation. According to Eichenstein, Boro Parkers and other residents of the 48th Assembly District are already struggling to pay their gas and electric bills. “Adding this unjustified and costly increase in delivery rates would be a disaster for them,” observed Eichenstein. “I cannot imagine how they will survive it.” Eichenstein called on the Public Service Commission to consider protests by consumers and elected officials as they contemplate the proposed rate hikes. CBS News reported that the Con Edison plan would have typical electric bills increasing approximately 4% each year for the next three years, while gas bills would rise more than 7% each year over the same time period. Company spokesperson Phillip O’Brien said that the increase would generate $3 billion each year that would be used to upgrade infrastructure and improve service. Con Edison had originally asked for a larger increase, a request that was denied by state officials who trimmed the proposed increase by $1.4 billion. A spokesperson for Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the company would not be allowed to “line shareholders’ pockets at the expense of everyday New Yorkers.”
Local Agencies Awarded Funding to Increase Participation in 2020 Census More than 150 community-based organizations have been awarded $19 million to encourage participation in the 2020 census in order to obtain a more accurate count in the nationwide survey used to allocate congressional seats and federal funding for education, housing, roads, bridges and other programs. The money is being distributed through the Complete Count Fund in an effort to overcome cultural boundaries and language barriers that prevent community members from par-

ticipating in the upcoming survey, which is conducted every ten years by the federal government. Among the nonprofits that will be receiving funding are several serving the Jewish community, including Agudath Israel of America’s Community Services division, Boro Park Jewish Community Council, Council of Jewish Organizations of Flatbush, Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, Darchei Torah, Jewish Community Council of Greater Coney Island and the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg. The city’s Yiddishspeaking communities have presented challenges in previous censuses, with many abstaining from providing information for the nationwide survey. The results have been costly, adversely affecting area residents. “The BPJCC is very pleased to play an integral role in making sure every Boro Parker is counted so that Boro Park will receive all of the benefits its residents are entitled to based on its actual numbers,” said Boro Park JCC director Rabbi Avi Greenstein. Those thoughts were echoed by UJO of Williamsburg President Rabbi David Niederman who told Hamodia, “Unfortunately, during the 2010 Census, South Williamsburg was among the many poor communities in NYC that were undercounted. The undercount cost the community valuable resources needed for the betterment of the community that would have been available if it was fully counted.”

and joining forces with the state’s northern counties. The plan is part of a proposal called Divide NY, reported The New York Post. In its initial iteration, Divide NY would split the city into three regions — New York City; Montauk, which would include Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland and Westchester; and New Amsterdam, which would cover the rest of the state. But Staten Island Assemblyman Michael Reilly has proposed shifting Staten Island to the proposed New Amsterdam region, saying that the borough has more in common with upstate areas than it does with New York City. Reilly told The Staten Island Advance that its

lack of large-scale public transportation is just one of several factors that differentiate the borough from Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx. “The New Amsterdam region would allow for some economic development,” said Reilly. “The government model from upstate would better align with the values of Staten Island.” Under Divide NY, each of the state’s three regions would have its own governor, legislature and schools, with taxes set independently in each area. The proposal is expected to be defeated by the state legislature, leaving Staten Island as part of the city.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN Recap: Tzippy’s parents purchase a beautiful apartment for the couple with Korman’s money, though Eliyahu and Elisheva still can’t shake off their discomfort about the entire deal. In Bratislava, Theodore Heinke searches for the two missing boys in a Jewish orphanage, whose director, Rabbi Walken, is in close contact with Janek regarding the boys. “I’ve never heard of a wedding held in a school gym.” Miri was standing in the middle of the gleaming kitchen, studying the central island that she was leaning on. She swiped a finger over the countertop. “Everything is full of dust,” she said with disgust. “It’s only from far that it looks so shiny. And look at the filthy floor in the space where the refrigerator goes.” Miri looked at the stained patch. It was a pretty big area. It didn’t look to her like the size of a regular fridge, but rather of a double-sized one. Is that what her parents had bought for Tzippy? She didn’t really want to ask. It was enough that they hadn’t even told her about this huge grant at first, for fear that she’d be jealous. “Peretz’s mother said that we should hire a cleaning company to tackle the kitchen before the appliances arrive.” Tzippy washed her hands, and then pulled out the faucet and squirted the countertop, enjoying the novelty of the multi-setting faucet. “But I cleaned the bedroom with Mommy yesterday, because we knew the furniture was supposed to arrive this morning.” “Let’s start arranging your stuff on the shelves. That’s what we came for,” Miri said, trying to get a hold of herself. “So, what were we talking about?” “The wedding,” Tzippy said lightly. “Of
course people will raise an eyebrow, but I trust my mother-in-law to make sure the wedding will be elegant.” “It’s true that even the shabbiest hall can be dressed up nicely,” Miri agreed, “but it’s still strange to get married there. Couldn’t his mother find any other place?” “Everything else was booked. At first we thought we could make the wedding in a shul hall, but none of those ended up being available for the date we needed. The other option was some country club type of place near Rechovot, but Tatty and Mommy didn’t want that, and neither did I. How would my friends get there?” She paused at the door to the bedroom. “And Peretz didn’t want it either. We’re not looking to be the topic of conversation.” “I hear,” Miri murmured. “So did you order invitations yet?” “Of course! As soon as my mother-in-law called back with a final answer, I ran with Mommy to Graffiti to order the invitations. They’ll be ready tomorrow morning, b’ezras Hashem.” “And you’ll send them out with a private mail service, right? I can just imagine people looking at the invitation and being shocked when they see where the wedding will take place…” “There’s nothing I can do,” the kallah

said airily. “They’ll be surprised? So be it. They’ll talk? So let them. They’ll raise an eyebrow, like you said? They may.” “You said that.” “What did I say?” “That people will raise an eyebrow.” “Could be. Doesn’t matter who said it.” Tzippy refused to get upset today. “We decided that we wouldn’t hide the truth. If anyone asks, we’ll tell them that someone is helping us out in memory of his parents, and that the person gave us the money for the wedding on condition that we get married on Rosh Chodesh Teves, and this was the only option we had.” “In less than a week and a half...” Miri opened the doors of the armoire, which was very similar to

the one that had been purchased for her. Even when shopping for her furniture, Mommy had refused to compromise on quality; she’d ordered a very good bedroom set. The only difference was that in the tiny bedroom in Miri’s rented apartment, there was no room for an armoire, and the order had been put on hold, waiting for the final okay before being filled. Right now she and Yaakov had a plastic closet standing in their hallway — and it blocked the large window. “Right.” Tzippy unzipped the suitcase and pulled out hangers. “This isn’t really all of my new stuff yet, but I preferred to bring whatever I could now, and not stuff it somewhere at home. I’ll have to come by again to put away some more things later, after we finish all the shopping. And I’m putting the set of linen you bought me right here at the front of this shelf. It’s going to adorn my closet.” She grinned. Miri pasted a broad smile on her lips and examined the drawers that Tzippy had opened. No, she wouldn’t have such drawers. As far as quality, the armoire was as good as hers; it had been purchased in the same store. But she had gotten the most standard design, without any expensive additional features like this one. “Hey, where’s the dress bag with the sheva brachos clothes?” Tzippy looked around. “I think you left it on the counter in the kitchen,” Miri said, and left the room to get it. She quickly scanned the spacious dining room, the other rooms in the apartment, and the afternoon sun that cast a reddish glow on the ceramic floors. Her linen set would adorn Tzippy’s closet. Her pity-infused maaser money.

“HE DOESN’T have what to do,” Ulush whispered to Janek. “Take him out a bit.” “Out?” Janek looked at Gustav, who was pacing back and forth inside the house. He opened and closed cabinets, sat onto a dining room chair, then moved to the armchair, and finally plopped down on the floor next to Edo, who was scribbling something on a paper, his tongue protruding between his lips. “Yes. He doesn’t want to color, and that’s the only thing I have to offer them. It keeps Edo busy, especially after I gave him your fountain pen. But Gustav...” She rolled her eyes in his direction. “True, there is a small chance that someone will identify him as the missing boy from the orphanage, but I think that a short walk outside, with a hat to cover most of his face, won’t do any harm. He’s getting crabby because he’s so bored.” Janek approached the two children who were hunched over the brown paper that Ulush had given them. He sat down on a nearby chair. “What are you drawing, Edo?” “A bed.” The younger boy examined his creation replete with blobs of ink, and in his heart, Janek resigned himself to the loss of his pen. “Whose bed is it?” “Mine.” “So where are you?” The boy smiled sweetly up at him. “I’m not going to sleep now.” “Oh, of course not. So what is that next to the bed?” “Gustav made that. He also wanted to draw with the nice pen.” “What did you draw, Gustav?” “Nothing,” the boy said. “I tried to remember if I know how to write the Jewish language.” Well, it did not appear that he remembered. “If you were only three when you came to the orphanage,” Janek said gently, “then you wouldn’t have known how to write by then.” “But you told me that they take three-year-old children with a big white cloth to a Jewish school and show them letters with honey.” Yes, yesterday he had sat with

Gustav and tried to recreate any possible memory that was stored deep in the recesses of the boy’s mind from when he was three years old. But he’d encountered only a white fog. Perhaps Gustav came from a family that did not observe Jewish tradition? That was also possible. “But those three-year-olds still don’t learn to write, usually. They just get to know the letters a bit.” “Oh.” Gustav’s voice was flat, and Janek’s heart went out to him. “And you don’t know who my father and mother are?” “Not yet.” “So maybe I should just go back to Theodore?” “To Theodore?” Janek controlled his voice so it didn’t sound any more astonished than it had to. “Why to Theodore? Does he know about your parents?” “No, he doesn’t. But if you also don’t know who or where they are, then why do I have to be here?” It wasn’t an attempt to be critical of the failing efforts of the searchers. The question was sincere and innocent, and that’s exactly why it made Janek’s throat sting. “Because we are Jews, and so are you,” he said softly. Edo sat quietly, coloring his thumbnail in blue. “So what?” Gustav asked. “I don’t know who your parents are, though we are hoping and praying that we find them. But I do know one thing: Your parents didn’t want you to stay with Theodore.” “Who told you that?” “Because Jews don’t want their children to grow up like gentiles.” “But Theodore is a good person.” “He was nice to you, and I’m happy about that. But I’m sure that your parents would not have wanted you to stay with him.” “But Edo’s mother wanted that. She brought him there herself.” “Edo’s mother?” Janek slid down to the floor next to the boys. “How do you know? Did you see her?” “Yes. And she was crying. Theodore didn’t want to take Edo, but...” He smiled, and his words were laced with pride. “I promised him that I’d help take care of Edo, and that

An Ayin Horah is as much part of nature as light, sound, and radio waves. Unlike a Segulah, which is a supernatural power that cannot be understood, an Ayin Horah is a purely a natural force, an innate phenomena that Hashem has placed in the world.
Yes, an Ayin Horah is a real thing. That is still no reason to fret, but if things seem to be spiraling out of control, call Einy Yeshuah and we will gladly check if there is an Ayin Horah on you.

I wouldn’t cry at night anymore. You see,” he said sheepishly, “I was little then. I was only about five.” Suddenly Ulush was also standing there. “You told us that,” she said quietly. “It’s so special. You saved Edo!” “Right.” Gustav kept smiling. “Did his mother also tell you that?” “I don’t think so. She was just crying.” He scratched his forehead. “But I think she asked me if I’m Jewish...” He stared at Janek. “You didn’t find her either?” “Not yet. But we’re looking.” Janek stood up decisively from the floor. “Do you want to come for a walk with me, Gustav? We’ll buy a new pen for me, and maybe one for you as well. Do you want me to start teaching you the letters that you learned,” maybe, “when you were three?” “Yes.” The boy stood up too. “Wait,” Ulush said. “Give me your scarf, Janek. Not the thick one, the thin one. It’s not so cold this evening. Wrap it around his head somehow, so his face isn’t so visible.” The walk with Gustav was productive. The boy returned with a sparkle in his eyes, stroking the stylus pen Janek had bought for him. Ulush gave him brown paper like Edo’s, and he sat for hours sketching abstract figures. Edo, by contrast, was getting better at drawing. He was also eating better, sleeping better at night, and within a week, his face looked much fuller. Extensive discussions were held regarding the best way to get the boys out of the city, where they would live after they left town, and where they would go from there. There were lots of people present at these discussions, and the two children were also fully aware of them. “I’m going to the land of the Jews,” Edo said to Ulush one day as she smeared butter onto his bread. “I’m not afraid of Jews anymore, because you’re Jewish and you’re good.” “I also want to go,” Gustav interjected. “But what will we do there? We don’t know anyone in that place.” “You’ll get to know lots of good people there.” Ulush pressed the two slices of bread together. “I don’t know anyone there either, but I would also love to go to Eretz Yisrael. There are good people there whom all of us would be happy to meet, even if we don’t know them yet.” “You have Janek,” Gustav said, playing with his pen. “Edo and I don’t have anyone.” “Maybe we’ll find someone,” Ulush said. “Gustav, do you also want some bread and butter, like Edo?” But Gustav wasn’t paying any attention to her question. “I need to get the paper out of my hiding place,” he whispered, but she didn’t hear him. “The paper from Edo’s mother.” To be continued...

Trump Signs Executive Order on Anti-Semitism THE PULSE: At this year’s White House Chanukah
party, President Donald Trump announced the signing of an executive order designed to protect Jewish students from anti-Semitic discrimination on campus. The executive order is relevant to the application of Title VI, which protects students from discrimination based on the grounds of race, color or national origin at any university receiving public assistance. However, Title VI does not protect students from reli-
44 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / January 1, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
gious discrimination. This is because many universities are part of religious organizations that inherently discriminate against other religions. The executive order issued by President Trump seeks to accomplish two things. One, it aims to codify existing Obama-era guidance in the form of an executive action that classifies particular anti-Jewish rhetoric as racial discrimination instead of religious discrimination, thereby affording Title VI protections to Jewish students. Two, it instructs government agencies to consider the International Holocaust Remembrance Agency’s (IHRA) definition of anti-Semitism when deciding if a Title VI violation took place. The IHRA definition is broad and considers some criticisms of Israel as anti-Semitic. Both points are controversial. In the week following the signing of the ex-
ecutive order, a discrimination claim was filed against Columbia University for tolerating a hostile anti-Israel environment. The actions of the Trump administration regarding Title VI stand in contrast to the administration’s approach regarding policing online hate speech. In the wake of the New Zealand Mosque attack earlier this year, the Trump administration publicly opposed the proposal drafted by the governments of France and New Zealand and multiple tech companies. The plan was meant as a commitment to work to remove hate from the internet. The Trump administration refused to join the initiative based on free speech concerns. Yet concerning Title VI, the administration prioritized the fears of racial hatred over the misgivings of limiting free speech. THE IMPACT: The impact of the executive action is
yet to be seen. It will largely depend on how it is acted upon and enforced. Many secular Jewish commentators expressed concerns about its designation of Jews as a race. However, a careful reading of the executive order summary appears to indicate that those concerns are misplaced. Free speech advocates are concerned that the guidance on the IHRA definition will be problematic, but in reality, it is only guidance and is not binding. The executive action will likely have a positive impact on Jewish campus groups and students as it will serve to protect them from hostile proPalestinian and pro-BDS advocates. It may also help in getting university administrators to take the discrimination concerns of Jewish students more seriously.
Murkowski Expresses Discomfort With McConnell’s Approach to Impeachment Trial THE PULSE: Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) expressed her concern with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s (R-KY) approach to the impeachment trial. She said that she found it troubling that McConnell would commit to “total coordination” with the White House on impeachment, and that de-
spite the constitutional requirement for an oath of impartiality, he would publicly state that he will not be an impartial juror. THE IMPACT: Murkowski’s comments are the first
public comments by a Republican Senator that are critical of McConnell. It is a crack in what until now has been a wall of unified support for McConnell and the president. A few days after her comments, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) said that five to ten of his Republican colleagues in the Senate have “severe misgivings” about Mitch McConnell’s impeachment strategy. If only three Republican Senators buck McConnell and demand a trial with witnesses, they will be able to get their way. A group of conservative activists calling itself Republicans for the Rule of Law also began running ads targeting Republican Senators and demanding that they call witnesses to testify at the impeachment hearings.
Trump Reveals Identity of Whistleblower THE PULSE: In successive acts of apparent frustration, President Trump put out links to the name of the alleged whistleblower and resent a message where the alleged whistleblower is named. He then apparently deleted the message that he sent. THE IMPACT: It is questionable whether it is legal for the president to expose the name of a whistleblower. Mainstream media outlets have not published the name out of concern for the whistleblower and for the protection of his identity. There exists strong bipartisan support for the protection of the whistleblower’s identity. Many are concerned that if he is outed and harassed, it will dissuade individuals from coming forward and reporting wrongdoings in this or any future administration. Even if it is legal to out the name of the whistleblower, it does not mean that it is prudent to do so. Furthermore, threats or acts of retaliation against a whistleblower are illegal, and he is afforded protection under whistleblower protection statutes.

The city is not one that gets deterred by a show of snow. What’s some white stuff on the ground got to do with school, with work? It’s business as usual. But over the years, there were times when the entire Brooklyn was on lockdown due to unusual snow accumulations and blizzard conditions that rendered the streets impassable — and the outdoors, beautiful as it was, dangerous to visit. They were experiences that residents, and history, won’t forget.
THE GREAT WHITE HURRICANE M ARCH 12–14, 1888 • SNOWFALL : 2 1 INCHES
It was just a few weeks to April, and the weather, unseasonably mild, held the promise of spring. A light rain began to fall, but then the weather took a brutal turn: The winds picked up speed, the rains took on a sinister ferocity, and the temperature plummeted to freezing levels. Soon the downpour changed to heavy, blinding snow, a dense white curtain that didn’t let up for the next 36 hours. At first, the sight was surreal, peaceful even, but then the winds, measuring up to 54 miles per hour, turned savage, whipping the high snow into eight-foot-tall snow drifts. In some places they even reached 30 to 40 feet high, and the deepest snow drift of the entire affected area accumulated in Gravesend,

Brooklyn, where mounds measured 52 feet high! The impact was crippling: The
city was paralyzed, the railroad at a standstill. Abandoned wagons littered the streets. “Hardly a Wheel
Turns,” read the headline in The New York Sun. Getting anywhere by foot was just as impossible as the gusts hurled snow and sleet straight into wayfarers’ faces. Even standing was not an option. Businesses were closed, factories were shuttered, and even the New York Stock Exchange was abandoned for two days. There were no milk carts, no butcher carts, no grocer boys bearing baskets. Electric lines (just a few years old) and telephone lines were ripped, and people shivered in dipping temperatures in homes buried under piles of snow. Unprepared, many found themselves without fuel, without food, without access to medical treatment, without access to anything. They huddled inside, their windows darkened, their vision to the outdoors obscured. Once the snow stopped, the city slowly started to dig themselves out of the white mountains — every shovel-full had to be hauled manually — and only there, beneath the snow piles, did the devastation come to light. Over 400 people had lost their lives in the storm, among them 200 New Yorkers. This storm, which caught New Yorkers unawares, catapulted New York into a modern era. Eventually, after this storm, the underground subway system was born; New York began placing its telegraph and telephone infrastructure underground; and snow-plowing solutions were developed.
It took days for the roads to get cleared up, about a week for the railroad to resume running, and several weeks for the deepest of snowdrifts to dissolve. One snowdrift was reported to have lasted

until July! Later storms surpassed the Great Blizzard of 1888 in inches, but this “Hurricane of the Century” remains legendary as the most devastating Brooklyn blizzard.

Stalled buses and other vehicles in the middle of the street
The Great Blizzard of 1888 was still a muchtalked-about event from the previous generation, when the end of 1947 brought with it a new record-breaker that made white, snowy waves. This storm was a mesoscale, its concentration aimed at a small area, and indeed, it rained down its wrath directly onto New York City in a slow but steady, unrelenting shower of white super-flakes, which quickly accumulated to over two feet of snow with drifts as high as 10 feet. The city was on lockdown: Automobiles, buses and rail cars lay stranded on the streets. And the issue was only exabarated in some ways once snow removal efforts were underway and the city was faced with the insurmountable task of moving all that snow to… where? The snow piles at the sides of the roads now reached 12 feet high as authorities grappled with the issue. Some snow was heaved into the sewers, where the warmer water melted the condensation and directed the flow to the rivers, and wherever possible, snow plows filled up truckloads of the white stuff to be dumped into the East and Hudson rivers. Remnants of the blizzard stayed on the ground through the winter, until March. While the snow accumulation topped any blizzard since 1869 — when the weather station started keeping records — and held the record until 2016, the temps and winds were not as severe as during other blizzards. Still, this storm accounted for 77 casualties.

THE BLIZZARD OF ‘96 JANUARY 7–8, 1996 • SNOWFALL: 20.2 INCHES
“Until further notice, the city is closed,” Mayor Giuliani declared. The culprit was the fast-amassing 20 inches of snow, accompanied by whipping winds and biting cold. And close the city it did; all three major airports in the area, as well as New York’s transportation system, stopped their operations, stranding passengers in the streets and in airports. New York schools were closed for two days in a row, a phenomenon unheard of before or since! (Hurricanes have demanded that action, but never a double snow day since records have been kept.) The postal service suspended mail delivery, and the “city that never sleeps” and its neighboring boroughs turned into ghost towns, inhabitants taking in the storm from behind snow-speckled windows. Getting medical help was a huge challenge — and the call volume was up 55% due to slips, falls, exertion and heatrelated injuries. The National Guard was called in to the area with 100 all-weather vehicles to serve as ambulances and to transport necessary medical personnel and supplies. Ambulances were stranded on the road, and medical workers carried stretchers and traveled by foot until the ER. One devoted doctor, Dr. Paul Levy, skied 4½ miles from his home to a hospital to check on his patients! The epic storm immobilized the city; at first, cleaning efforts were almost in vain. “You plow, and ten minutes later it looks like nothing’s been done,” a spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike said. But as the storm’s fury died down, the borough’s sanitation department, faced with 16 major snowstorms that winter alone, the snowiest of all time, came through here, too. Within 24 hours, all main traffic arteries were passable, and within 36 hours, the same could be said for all city streets. Much physical exertion, too, was used in the Big Digout — as the shoveling two feet of snow off sidewalks and stoops was referred to — against the background of official warnings to exercise caution.

BLIZZARD OF 2006 FEBRUARY 11–12, 2006 • SNOWFALL : 26.9 INCHES
New York City and its surrounding areas received the brunt of this major nor’easter that broke the record as the storm with greatest snow accumulation in its time, eclipsing the legendary 1947 storm. The storm introduced itself with a dramatic show of thundersnow, a rare phenomenon round our parts, with thunder and lightning followed by a downpour of rushing snow, “as hard as it can snow in NYC, and it’s extremely rare,” one meteorlogist said. Surprisingly, in Brooklyn, this storm did not meet the criteria to be considered a blizzard, since the winds were too “tame” and visibility too “good,” relatively speaking. NASA satellite image of the storm, featuring a hurricane-like “eye” Another rare aspect of this storm was the fact that way up in Albany, the snow accumulation was only between one and two NYC, for the first time ever, ranked higher than upstate inches! And because of this marvelous discrepancy, New York in snow accumulation for the season.

SNOWICANE FEBRUARY 25–26, 2010 SNOWFALL: 20.9 INCHES
February of 2010 was a very snowy, stormy month for the United States, with one blizzard hitting the Northeast, but sparing New York, on the 5th and 6th; another one afflicting the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and New England regions on the 9th and 10th; and yet a third one hitting home, right here in New York City, on the 25th and 26th. With the 20-plus inches of heavy, wet snow came hurricane-like winds, knocking out power in more than 150,000 homes and businesses and earning the storm it’s nickname, Snowicane.

The blizzard, a combination of heavy precipitation this storm remains in New Yorkers’ memories as one of and strong winds, wreaked havoc on the transporta- the messiest storms with the longest-lasting aftereffects. tion system. Most city roads were impassable for many days. Hundreds of buses were stalled in the snow, trains were frozen into platforms, and doors would not budge; 400 passengers were stranded on a train for seven hours. Cars were abandoned on the roads after their drivers admitted failure and went to seek shelter. Plow trucks were not spared as many becoming stuck, and many areas remained inaccessible due to stalled vehicles, a dangerous issue for emergency vehicles that could not get through. It took many days for roads to become passable, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg got a lot of flak for the sluggish snow removal response. Bloomberg was criticized for Stalled cars at 56th Street the 400 sanitation workers he’d laid off due to budget cuts, and that a snow emergency wasn’t declared, a fact that contributed to the abandoned cars serving as roadblocks. NYC operators fielded 49,478 calls to 911 on Monday alone, despite Bloomberg’s begging the public “to do two things: Don’t call 911 unless it is a serious emergency. And don’t drive.” Neither request was heeded well enough. Later came to light that cleanup had been intentionally slowed down to protest Bloomberg’s move of laying off workers, when footage emerged showing sanitation workers “plowing” with raised plows. Allegations were also made of workers on duty being sighted in doughnut shops An unplowed Brooklyn street and other eateries for hours on

The Blizzard of 2016, with its fast and furious snowfall, broke any previous record for the biggest snow accumulation. While the city wasn’t literally at a standstill, a travel ban was in effect. People were urged to stay off
the roads, and MTA halted public bus service, explaining that “When the snowfall hits a certain rate, the plows literally can’t keep up. That’s where we are.” To avoid the disastrous events of six years prior, De Blasio further warned that citizens
out driving may even be subject to arrest. Despite the staggering snowfall, schools were back in session right after the snow-filled weekend, on Monday, much to the disappointment of snow-loving Brooklyn kids.

It’s the season of dry skin, hacking coughs, and viruses run amok. Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a simple way to way to sidestep these issues? There just might be….
72 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
Winter has long been touted as a villain in the fight against sniffles and sneezes. It seems that every time we turn around, another ailment is making the rounds. The indoor seclusion that naturally results as man seeks to escape cold has had many fingers pointed at it, the rationale being that germs become contained within an enclosed space, unable to freely disperse. That, coupled with our being in close proximity to other warmth-seekers, seems to create the perfect method for transmission of communicable illnesses. But is there another factor at play? In the last decade, multiple studies have begun to indicate another culprit that’s been flying under our radars: indoor heating. Let’s be clear: Heating itself is not the cause for concern; humans do require protection from the cold. It’s the impact of heating on air quality that we worry about. Poor air quality is listed as one of the top environmental health threats, and while that usually conjures images of haze-filled, polluted skies, cleanliness is only one of the aspects that contributes to air quality. Properly maintained levels of humidity, which is water vapor in the air, is now making itself known as a vital aspect of illness prevention. One study conducted by the CDC in 2013 examined the ability of flu particles to survive in environments of varying humidity. Mannequins were placed in a room with low humidity of 23%, and they were programmed to “cough,” releasing flu virus particles into the air. An hour after the simulated cough, more than 70% of the particles were still capable of causing infection in a human being. When the humidity levels were raised to a healthy 43%, however, only 14% of the virus particles were active enough to cause infection one hour later. Most of the particles became inactive within 15 minutes of the “cough.” As researcher John Noti put it, “The virus just falls apart.” In a more recent study conducted
in April 2019, researchers at Yale asked a different question: What happens to the host (in this case, mice) when there are variants in humidity levels during exposure to the Influenza A virus? The mice the researchers infected with the virus had been genetically modified to resist viral infections in the same manner as humans. They were placed in chambers that were set at the same temperature, but had different levels of humidity. Specimens kept at humidity levels of 10% to 20% developed a significantly worse viral load than their counterparts housed in 50% humidity. Upon examination, it was discovered that the immune response of the mice from the low humidity chambers had been compromised in several ways: The defense mechanism of the lungs (mucociliary clearance) had been impaired; the process of tissue repair had been hindered; and the induction of interferon (signaling proteins that activate nearby cells to up their defenses) had been blocked. What does this mean for us twoleggers? As Akiko Iwasaki, head of the Yale research team, said, "It's well known that where humidity drops, a spike in flu incidence and mortality occurs. If our findings in mice hold up in humans, our study provides a possible mechanism underlying this seasonal nature of flu disease." But even if the spread of flu can be hampered with humidity, there are a host of other issues caused by low air vapor, ranging from drastically exacerbated skin issues such as eczema or steroid-damage, to disrupted balance of natural moisture in the nose and eyes — both of which are vital for antimicrobial defense, as well as simple comfort. Annoying static electricity can also be lessened by upping the humidity. The good news is that adding moisture to dried-out air is often as simple as plugging in a cord and poking a button. To that end, let’s demystify the mist-makers.

LET THE HUMIDIFIER HUNT BEGIN! Small-Space Humidifiers
For small spaces and tight budgets, there are very affordable humidifiers that can be found at any local pharmacy or in stores like Walmart or Target. These typically run in the $15 range, and insurance will often cover the cost if your doctor sends in a prescription. Asthmatics, those with skin issues and those who are suffering from a cough or nasal congestion can easily be prescribed a humidifier. These budget versions come in both hot (vaporizers) and cold (cool mist) versions. Vaporizers emit hot steam, which can be a hazard for young children. Cool mist versions are safer in regard to burns. They do, however, require more frequent cleaning to prevent dangerous bacteria buildup. The downside of both of these versions is that they only provide humidity for a few short hours, which means that by Shabbos morning, the steam will be drying out the air once again...
With a bit of an investment, you can find humidifiers that have longer run times. For several years I used the Honeywell HCM350 Germ-Free humidifier in each room of the house. A major benefit of this machine is that you don’t have to frequently scrub down the insides as it has a filter that prevents bacteria from entering the air. It can run for quite a few hours before needing a refill, depending on how high the heat is and how high the machine is set to run. The main drawback is that the filter needs to be replaced often. This machine runs at about $60.

Though it’s sometimes necessary for a humidifier to accompany a child to school, it’s not fair to burden a teacher with a difficult-to-use humidifier. For my daughter with skin issues, I purchased this easy-to-use TaoTronics humidifier that has three simple steps: fill up, plug in, turn on. It costs about $50 and has a run time of up to 60 hours, though I doubt it actually lasts that long with standard use. I have my older daughter bring it home every week or so for me to sanitize.
Large-Space Humidifiers
After several years of filling up five Honeywell humidifiers every night, I was getting burnt out from shlepping awkwardly-shaped jugs of water up and down stairs. With our move into a new house I said, “Enough! There must be a better way.” Instead of purchasing more Honeywells, I instead looked into large space humidifiers. And I love what I found! My newfound humidity-making friend is the AirCare 831000 Space Saver Whole House Evaporative Humidifier, which claims to be able to moisten the air for up to 2,700 square feet. I can’t vouch for the full footage, but for about 1,600 square feet it works rather well. At only slightly more than $100, it’s a real bargain! I park it in the hallway outside the room of my daughter with skin issues so that she gets the most humidity. Rooms farther away seem to be less moist, but still adequately humid. Bear in mind that closing doors will prevent humidity from entering a room. I fill it up with about 4 gallons of water every night and run it on the second fan setting all day when the steam is on. I keep it set at above 50% humidity, though when the steam is working hard, it never reaches that point.
The downside of this humidifier is that if you have hard water, mineral build-up happens very quickly, necessitating a wick change every couple weeks at a cost of about $17 each. Using bottled water can extend the life of the wick, as can a water-softener system.
Cleaning Humidifiers
Heating and Humidity
Take care to read the manufacturer’s instructions for care. Wet environments are the perfect breeding ground for dangerous bacteria. Some require daily cleaning, some weekly. Some have filters that need to be replaced frequently, and some suggest using vinegar to prevent mold growth.
Each type of heating system affects the humidity levels — and thereby the comfort — in a home somewhat differently. Forced air has a really bad rap for drying out the air, while radiator and baseboard heating are slightly better. The winner when it comes to comfort? Radiant heating, in which the heating system is built under the floor and doesn’t affect the actual air. Even with radiant heating, though, a humidifier is often still necessary.
Bottom line? Know your product!

On-the-Go Humidifiers So let’s say you’ve humidified your home… What about the car? What about when traveling by plane? Planes are notorious for abnormally dry air. How about simply sitting at a desk in a heated office? There are some great options for humidifying the air even when not at home. I have a small but mighty humidifier for the car that makes such a difference!
USB-ENABLED HUMIDIFIERS These humidifiers are perfect for car or plane travel. Most newer cars feature USB outlets where you can plug these in, and of course, if you are traveling with a device that has a USB port, you can just plug one of these in as well. These run in the $15 to $20 range. There are also slightly larger ones for desktop use.
WATER BOTTLE HUMIDIFIERS These are great for when sleeping away from home. They require an outlet and a water bottle, and are compact for easy packing. The specific one pictured runs at around $40 on Amazon, but there are cheaper ones as well. These models are not intended to be used in large spaces.
Humidify Without Humidifiers I sincerely hope that every family and school will invest in humidifiers for the health and comfort of the people therein, but in the interim, here are some other ways to add at least a little humidity to the air: • Hang up lots of wet clothing in a room, preferably near the heating source • Spray a lot of water into the air using a spray bottle on “mist” setting • Take a hot shower and leave the door open and fan off (doing this too frequently, though, can increase the risk of mold) • Put up a pot of water to boil • Put bowls of water underneath radiators • Set up a slow cooker with water and leave it running • Wet a towel, drape over a fan, and turn the fan on Please note: While these methods will help alleviate the dryness somewhat, none of them will drastically raise humidity levels.

Whole-House In-Duct Humidifiers
What could be better than having your whole home humidified at once, the moisture being supplied straight through your HVAC system? It does sound great, doesn’t it? The problem with these systems is that it is very easy to damage a house with an in-duct humidifier. If not correctly installed or monitored, or if there are any cracks in the HVAC system, moisture can find its way into nooks and crannies and breed mold. That’s never a good thing! In-duct systems are a risk that I personally would not take.
How Humidity Affects Your Floors and Furniture
Ideal Humidity Levels
Wood is greatly affected by humidity, or the lack of it. If the humidity level dips below 35%, you might notice that wood begins to gap or split. This is caused by the wood shrinking in response to the loss of water, and it can even compromise the finish. It’s particularly important to keep the humidity above 35% because once wood splits, the damage is permanent.
Ideal humidity levels for both health and home fall between 35% to 60%, though around 50% is best. When humidity is too low, it can cause health issues for people, as well as damage to furniture and floors. Too high levels of humidity, though, can lead to mold, mildew and bacterial overgrowth. Signs of abnormally high humidity levels can be condensation on windows, peeling paint, buckling floors, a musty odor, and of course, the growth of mold. A hygrometer is a tool used for measuring humidity levels. You can purchase one for around $10.
On the other hand, high humidity levels can cause wood to buckle and swell. If the humidity is very high, it can trap moisture in wood, causing potential mold problems. Musical instruments also need well-maintained humidity levels or they, too, can become damaged.

O
ne day, my youngest son left his jacket at cheder. The weather had been warm enough without the extra protective layer, he explained. However, the next day, in the cool morning air, he needed something to wear for the walk to cheder. His hoodie had been left behind on a different occasion, so that wasn’t an option, but I knew I had a heavy winter coat in my storage closet. Even though the thermostat hadn’t yet dipped that low this early in the winter, the thick coat would have to do until the lost apparel would make their way back home. This coat had in fact belonged to
ing the coat, while I considered looking for a new one at the upcoming sales. Later that day, my daughter Shiri sent me a picture of her baby boy. When I told her that Yehudi looked so sweet, she replied by saying that I should take a better look. When time allowed it, I sat down and looked at my grandson’s picture. He, too, was wearing a winter coat, a blue one with red stripes. It looked oddly familiar, and I wondered where my daughter had picked it up. I looked at Yehudi’s rosy cheeks and toothy grin. He certainly seemed happy in the fresh, cold air of the playground where he was posing. I walked away from the picture and got busy with those things we get busy with. Shortly after, the phone rang. “Hi, Shiri,” I said as I saw the familiar phone number. “Seems like Yehudi really enjoyed the park today. His eyes were shining!” “Thanks,” Shiri answered. “But, Mommy, didn’t you notice what Yehudi was wearing?” “Oh, yeah,” I said. “His coat is cute. Why does it look so familiar?” “No, Mommy, it’s the famous coat!” Shiri waited for me to catch her meaning. Suddenly, a light went off in my brain. “The coat that was originally from your in-laws!” The memories came tumbling in. When my husband and I were a young couple with only one son, our acquaintances, Nosson and Perel Schwartz, told us that they were moving to Canada, and that they were selling off some items, including beds that Nosson, a carpenter by trade, had built himself. However, by the time we had reached their apartment to see the beds, they’d already been sold. The Schwartzes felt bad that we had schlepped so far to their neighborhood only to leave emptyhanded, so they looked around and offered us a box of tools they would not be taking with them. Then Perel took a look at my baby
The coat looked oddly familiar, and I wondered where my daughter had picked it up. my oldest son. It was subsequently worn by a long stream of ten-year-old boys, of which the last two had been born almost ten years apart. This meant the coat was over twenty years old, but in my mind, it was brandnew. As one of the gifts from my mother, a”h, purchased during her annual trip to Eretz Yisroel, it was more than a coat to me; it was the memory of having once been someone’s child, loved and taken care of. The coat was sturdy and thick, Canadian-made for real winters. What could be better? I handed my son the coat and helped him get it on. “Isn’t it nice?” I said, stroking the soft blue flannel lining and durable rain-proof exterior. “Not really,” he answered. “It’s stained.” This is from the kid who could wear the same pair of pants the entire week. It’s just dust stains, I thought. I took another look and noticed how the sleeves were wide and baggy, unlike clothes of recent fashion. I also observed the frayed edges around the hood and sleeves. I guess it’s not so brand-new, after all. With no better option, he left for cheder wear-
boy and threw in a little boy’s coat into the box of tools. “Here,” she said, “you can use this coat for your son. My boys have grown out of it.” Still disappointed about not buying the beds, I gave a shrug and said thank you. But as it turned out, that little blue coat with red stripes served a whole pack of little boys that soon joined our family one by one. Years later, I heard that the Schwartzes had moved back home. Our paths would cross once in a while, and we would greet each other warmly. One day, after boarding a bus with my younger daughter after taking her shopping, I found myself sitting beside Leah, an old friend from years back. We caught up on each other’s lives until it was time to go our separate ways. A few days later, Leah called me. “You know,” she said, “I was thinking about your daughter Shiri.” I had mentioned that Shiri would be turning eighteen in just a little bit. “How about Perel’s son, Efraim?” I couldn’t understand where that thought had come from, but then I remembered that Leah and Perel were neighbors. “I don’t know,” I said honestly. “Shiri isn’t really in shidduchim yet, and I don’t know anything about this boy.” “Okay,” Leah said good-naturedly. “No problem. I’ll keep it in mind.” I soon all but forgot about this exchange. Shiri was busy with school, and I was busy worrying about making Pesach. But when Leah called again a few months later, I suddenly remembered her suggestion. “You did say to call closer to Pesach,” Leah reminded me. Had I? I guess I did. Perel had already looked into Shiri and thought the shidduch had potential. After doing research on Efraim and talking to his friends and rebbeim, we also thought so. Shortly thereafter, the young couple met, and it didn’t take long until we all drank l’chaim. Now, looking at the picture of Yehudi in his blue and red coat, I saw the warm and cozy union of two families whose paths crossed — and then merged two decades later.

Snow is so peaceful and pristine — for the first few minutes. Before we know it, the white wonder turns slushy and gray, leaving kids with precious little with which to build even a snowman. The snow outside our windows may not retain its beauty for too long, but it can be enjoyed all the way — visually and actively — in parks not too far from home, and in spots that require a fair amount of travel time.

Ice Fishing Ice fishing is a popular pastime in places where winter comes harsh and heavy. Once a river is frozen at least 4 inches thick, ice fishers drill holes and cast their rods. Those who ice fish frequently often invest in ice huts, where they are protected from winds. It’s even possible to build a fire inside the hut to make the experience a drop warmer...
Snowshoeing Walking on deep snow doesn’t come naturally to humans; we just sink right in. But it does come naturally to the snowshoe hare, an animal that Hashem designed with feet that are relatively large compared to their body size. Large feet help to disperse their weight, keeping them on top of the snow during long winter months. Humans have adopted this trick and created snowshoes to traverse even deep snow. And while snowshoes do keep a person from sinking all the way into deep snow, many first-time snowshoers are surprised that they don’t just glide along on top. Though they may be able to walk over even 24-inch-deep snow, they may still sink nearly a foot into it.
Snowball Fights While kids the world over love a good snowball fight, some people take their snowball battles very seriously… In Japan, there is the annual Yukigassen snowball tournament, in which players wear special protective gear and divide themselves into two teams, trying to eliminate each other with a direct hit. But the game is harder than you’d imagine, because the playing field is dotted with snow barricades that one can hide behind.

--------•-------The world’s largest snowball fight took place on January 31, 2016, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. Over 20,000 people showed up to watch the fight, and 7,681 people participated. --------•-------Six Flags in New Jersey sought to beat the Saskatoon record in 2017, but ironically, their snowball fight was cancelled… due to too much snow!

Snow Snacks Here’s a fun activity for families. Turn snow into treats! Word to the wise: Only use fresh white snow for these recipes. Avoid yellow at all cost...
SNOW ICE CREAM Mix together 1 cup milk, 4 T. sugar, 1 tsp. vanilla extract, and then add 8 cups of snow and mix again. Enjoy! HOT COCOA SNOW-SLUSHIE Melt 3 ounces chocolate in a double boiler. Add 2 tsp. cocoa and 1½ tsp. sugar, stirring until blended. Remove from heat, and mix in a ½ cup of milk un-
til smooth and cool. Once cool, add another 3 cups of milk and then stir in 3 cups of snow. Enjoy! SNOW TAFFY Fill up a sheet pan with snow, packing it in hard. Heat 2 cups of 100% maple syrup until it reaches 240°. Remove from heat and pour syrup in lines onto the snow. Press popsicle stick onto the syrup and roll up. Enjoy!
Building Snowmen It’s not only kids who love to play with snow… Adults in Bethel, Maine, built the snowman who holds the record for being the largest in the world. This gigantic snowman was made using a crane, and stood only about 30 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty!

4. WHAT TEMPERATURE IS YOUR THERMOSTAT SET TO?
1. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT SNOW? It’s a slushy mess best avoided.
Lower temps are better for health (and the wallet!). We keep it at 68° or below.
I’m scared of slips and falls.
The range of 69–70° is quite comfortable for us.
I don’t love it, but I do love to see my kids enjoy it.
Isn’t 72° considered room temperature?
It’s nice once in a while, but not too often. There’s nothing like white, crisp snow! I would love it to snow more frequently.
I’m a cold person; 72–76° is the norm.
5. DO YOU HUMIDIFY YOUR HOME? No, what is that? I didn’t until now, but I think I should...
2. WHAT’S YOUR REACTION TO SCHOOL CANCELATIONS DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER?
Only when someone doesn’t feel well. Of course! Humidifiers run all the time in our home.
Sheer panic. This totally disrupts my schedule! I find it stressful to keep the kids entertained.
6. WHAT TYPE OF HEATING DO YOU HAVE? Uh… I dunno.
I’m easygoing. It’s fine either way.
I live in an old home with radiator heating.
I’m happy to have a lazy day.
Baseboard heating keeps us warm.
I’m thrilled to spend more time with my kids!
We have forced air in our house. We like toasty toes; radiant heat for us! Other ____________________________________________
3. HOW DO YOU KEEP YOUR KIDS BUSY WHEN IT BECOMES DARK SO EARLY? We do fun activities like baking and crafts.
7. WHAT ARE YOUR COLD WEATHER COMFORT FOODS?
I keep the kids entertained with toys and books.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I’m bored!” is a popular refrain in our home.

PARTICIPATING IN THE CHANUKAH SCAVENGER HUNT BY: N.M.
The entire Scavenger Hunt took under two hours, but if I ask my kids which was their favorite Chanukah party, they will insist it was the one on 13th Avenue. The Boro Park View’s announcement of a Chanukah Scavenger Hunt seemed like just the kind of thing our family would enjoy — a nice diversion on a really long vacation day. We never imagined just how much fun it would be! Throughout the week, ever since they figured out the first puzzle, the children were excitedly looking forward to starting the hunt — and soon their cousins asked if they could join us. My kids were thrilled at the idea! As the week went by, neighbors, too, had joined our little group, and I realized I was going to be in charge of quite the crew. By the time everyone’s schedule aligned on Thursday, it was al-

ready 3 o’clock, and the children were raring to go. First stop: Eichler’s! The streets were alive with cheerful Chanukah music and teeming with kids coming from all directions, excitedly swinging their Eichler’s and Toys 4 U
bags, some poring over sheets of paper, others eating doughnuts. It looked like a block party! We approached Eichler’s from 50th Street, and only then noticed that the line ran all the way to 51st Street! So down the block we went, and as soon as we joined the weaving line, more families lined up right behind us. As we got closer, we saw the puzzles hanging on Eichler’s windows. They seemed impossible to figure out at first, but then my ten-yearold son realized what he was looking at and explained it to us. Within a few minutes we already knew our second location, but we hadn’t even officially started the hunt yet! When we finally arrived at the front of the line, the kids were handed their first prizes. The boys loved the play money, and the girls were excited to get their Chanukah activity book.
first thought was, “Good thing I insisted the kids finish their lunch before we leave. This is going to take a while!” We got there… eventually. The candied nuts went right
We also received our New Eichler’s bag for all of our loot, and the game cards for every kid. As soon as their cards were stamped, the kids raced to Oh! Nuts. The line was just as long as before, but the music kept the mood light and the new puzzle had them scratching their heads for a bit. It was such a thrill when they figured it out! People walking down the avenue were taking photos of the large crowd. I guess we were a sight to behold! The line was orderly if somewhat fidgety, but the atmosphere was fun and festive. As we started on that second line heading to Oh! Nuts, my
into the bag as the kids unanimously decided to save the treat for Shabbos. Game cards stamped, we all headed over to our next location. Weiss Bakery lines moved fast! We got our sheets stamped in record time, and oh, goodie! Doughnuts! The puzzle directing us to Toys 4 U was sweet, though the line to Toys 4 U had been clearly visible from the Oh! Nuts tent, so we had some inkling as to our final destination. Night falls early on these winter evenings, but somehow the atmosphere was light and the joy was palpable even as the streetlights went on
and the sky grew dimmer. The Toys 4 U tent was inching closer, and the kids couldn’t wait to see what was in store... Izzy & Dizzy cards and a Chanukah Rubik’s cube! This night was just getting better and better! The kids completed their game cards and dropped them into the humongous box in hopes of winning that electric scooter — but their bulging bags and satisfied chocolate-covered smiles told me that they felt like winners already.
If it seems like I enjoyed this as much as my children, I’ll readily confess that I did! The puzzles may have been on kids’ level, but they were clever enough for adults to appreciate. The prizes were phenomenal, and the smiles on the kids’ faces were priceless! But best of all, in this day and age, when nothing in life is free anymore, I got to experience this wonderful Chanukah community embrace — at no charge.
