Dear Food Editor,

I was very surprised when I saw your recipe for homemade jerky. To my knowledge, jerky is (with apologies to those who introduced it to the kosher market) “truck driver” food, which belongs in the snack section of gas stations and truck stops, and not on a Yom Tov table.

I, as well as countless other heimish balabustes, plan to set my Purim table with classic foods that have a mesorah of being served at the tables of our gedolim of past generations: marinated fish and gefilte fish, kreplach, stuffed cabbage, helzel, tongue, hamentaschen, kindel and others.

Why emulate Achashveirosh, who fed the Yidden all kinds of Persian delicacies (even with the best hechsherim)? First it was sushi, and now it’s jerky. What’s next — kosher bacon and cheeseburgers?

I recently experienced an uncomfortable situation and now want to bring awareness to your readers so no one else will make the same mistake.

I purchased chocolate gift items online from a heimish store the other day, and I didn’t bother looking at the hechsher as the local brick-and-mortar store has a very reliable hashgacha. After I shipped the chocolate to clients as corporate gifts, however, I was made aware that the chocolates were chalav stam. I called the store and was told that the heimish hashgacha only covered items sold in the physical store, and not on the website, which has a different hechsher for each item.

Potential customers, please be on the lookout for any unexpected lack of hashgacha when it comes to purchased food items.

GOT SOUP?

To local mothers staying at area hospitals after birth, please remember to check the ingredients of the kosher meals you are served. A few hours after giving birth, I was served kosher cheese ravioli alongside kosher chicken soup. The woman who delivered the tray explained that the kitchen had run out of the vegetable soup I ordered, so they gave me chicken soup instead.

Baruch Hashem, I checked the ingredients on the chicken soup before opening it, so I wasn’t nichshal. I’m publicizing my experience as a reminder that we can’t take the kashrus of any meal for granted when eating outside of our homes.

The Shechinah in our Midst

YEHUDA* WAS IN A POOR STATE. Confined to a bed in Maayanei Hayeshua hospital in Bnei Brak, he could only stare at the ceiling and listen to the incessant beeping of the life-support machinery. He was partially paralyzed and could hardly move. Every passing minute was agony.

When the hospital rav stopped by to check on him, Yehuda shared what was weighing on his heart. “How can I say the bracha she’asah li kol tzorki when I don’t have a tafkid in this world anymore?”

The rav didn’t know what to say, but he knew that Rav Shmuel Halevi Wosner, zt”l, was due to visit the hospital that afternoon. “I’ll ask Rav Wosner,” he assured Yehuda.

Rav Wosner became very emotional when he heard the question, and asked to meet the patient and discuss it in person.

With his characteristic warmth, Rav Wosner stroked Yehuda’s hand and asked for permission to share a story with him.

“When I was a bachur in Lublin,” he began, “I once had the privilege of accompanying my rebbi, Rav Meir Shapiro, zt”l, when he visited a talmid who was battling a terminal illness. Despite his tremendous pain, the bachur was in a good mood and had a cheer-

ful smile on his face.

“Rav Meir was amazed at the inner strength of his sick talmid, and asked him how he managed to keep his spirits up.

“The bachur replied, ‘Lying here in bed gave me lots of time to think. I can hardly do a thing in my condition. I began to wonder what my purpose in this world is at this time. Why is Hakadosh Baruch Hu keeping me alive? I was reminded of the Chazal that states that the Shechinah rests above the head of an ill person. In that case, the purpose of a sick man is to bring more Shechinah to the world. That is my role right now.

“‘At the same time, I thought about a different Chazal (Shabbos 30b): “Ein Shechinah shoreh lo mitoch atzvus,” the Shechinah does not rest in a place of sadness. I decided I must try as hard as I can, with all my being, not to be sad or down, because that will drive away the Shechinah — and here my whole tafkid is to be a resting place for the Shechina!

Moshe Rabbeinu voiced concern over whether Klal Yisroel had sufficient materials to build the Mishkan. Hashem reassured him, stating that each Yid alone could come up with everything they needed. That’s how vast the booty of the Yam Suf was! Additionally, they had many gems, because pearls and precious stones rained down each morning along with the portion of mann for the tzaddikim

Hashem tells Moshe Rabbeinu, “V’asu Li Mikdash v’shachanti besocham

They shall make for Me a Sanctuary, and I will dwell in them” (Shemos 25:8).

Seforim comment that it would seem more correct to say besocho, “I will dwell in it.” Why does the pasuk use the plural besocham , which means “in them”?

That’s why I’m smiling. I take chizuk from the fact that I’m causing more hashra’as haShechinah in this world.’”

Rav Wosner looked at Yehuda, hooked up to machinery and barely able to move. “Do you know what Rav Meir Shapiro’s response was? He was noticeably impressed by the pure, smart words of the bachur, and he said, ‘Such a vort must be preserved for generations!’”

Now Rav Wosner fulfilled that directive, repeating the vort so another choleh could gain chizuk. “You see, you do have a tafkid in this world — one of the most elevated accomplishments possible: to create a place for the Shechinah to rest!”

These words of encouragement, infused with empathy and love, gave Yehuda strength to go on. His heart felt lighter, and he was able to perceive the goodness even amid the pain. As his emotional state improved, his physical condition began to improve as well. The doctors later confirmed that his recovery exceeded their expectations. * * * * *

The Alshich explains that each and every person in Klal Yisroel is meant to create a holy spot in his heart in which the Shechinah can rest. That’s why the pasuk uses the plural form besocham, in them; this refers to inside the heart of every single Yid.

We are each endowed with the opportunity to bring more Shechinah down to this world. In whichever position or situation Hakadosh Baruch Hu places us, we have the ability to create a makom for hashra’as haShechinah.

May we have the strength to smile and keep our spirits up in every situation we encounter so we, too, can merit bringing hashra’as haShechinah into our midst.

Shomrim Assists in Apprehension of Serial Burglar

An individual who has been burglarizing Jewish homes for months was arrested on Friday night, thanks to the efforts of Shomrim volunteers.

Hamodia reported that Shomrim and the NYPD have both been aware of the activities of Salvadore Fuentes, 40, whose knowledge of the lifestyle habits of Boro Park residents had him breaking into homes on Friday nights when families were away. Shomrim had been tracking Fuentes’ whereabouts on surveillance cameras for the last few weeks and spotted him checking out fire escapes on several local buildings on February 17.

Multiple Shomrim volunteers converged on the area, calling the NYPD after Fuentes entered an interior alleyway at 1720 52nd Street, which constituted trespassing. Fuentes, who had previously been arrested and charged with criminal trespass and burglary 24 times, was apprehended by police and was found to be carrying a bag that did not belong to him containing a crowbar, a bolt cutter, a stolen MetroCard and two screwdrivers. Fuentes was charged with criminal trespass and attempted burglary.

Community Board 12 expressed its appreciation to the NYPD’s 66th Precinct and Boro Park Shomrim for arresting Fuentes, noting that he has been breaking into houses every Friday night for months and calling on Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez to “take him off our streets for good.”

Service Restored at JFK’s Terminal 1 After Multi-Day Electrical Outage

A fire in an electrical panel at JFK’s Terminal 1 created havoc for travelers last week, causing delays and cancellations that left many travelers stranded.

Gothamist reported that the fire took place overnight last Wednesday, with as many as 260 flights canceled or delayed by Friday afternoon. According to the New York Post, passengers only learned about the power outage when they arrived at JFK on Thursday and were handed flyers containing flight infor-

mation that would normally have been displayed on Terminal 1’s electronic boards, which were rendered inoperable by the outage.

The power outage had a global effect, reported ABC 7. An Air New Zealand flight that was already eight hours into its sixteen-hour trip from Auckland to New York was sent back to New Zealand, while a flight from South Korea that had made it almost all the way to the United States was turned back. One Air Serbia passenger said that his flight departed with almost no passengers on board, because no one was able to get to the new gate at Terminal 7 on time, while a Swiss Air flight was delayed by a full five days.

Limited service resumed at Terminal 1 on Friday, with service fully restored by Sunday. The Port Authority said that the extensive delay was the result of having to have a critical part driven to JFK from Georgia.

Alligator Rescued From Prospect Park Lake

It was anything but business as usual on Sunday morning, as city park workers removed a four-foot-long alligator from Prospect Park Lake in an area that is often frequented by children.

The New York Post reported that the alligator was spotted floating near Duck Island, at the park’s southeastern edge, at approximately 8:30 a.m. Park workers were called to the scene, and reportedly, the alligator was lethargic and unmoving when it was pulled out of Prospect Park’s frigid waters, a far cry from the tropical climes that alligators typically inhabit.

and treatment, according to Spectrum News 1. A spokesperson for the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation said that the alligator was likely a house pet whose owners made a very poor decision by releasing it into the lake.

“In addition to the potential danger to park-goers this could have caused, releasing non-indigenous animals or unwanted pets can lead to the elimination of native species and unhealthy water quality,” said the spokesperson.

W.I.L.D. for Prospect Park, which works towards ensuring that the area remains safe for its native plants and animals, noted that the event underscored the need for surveillance cameras to be posted at the park’s entrances.

“This happened this morning,” wrote W.I.L.D. for Prospect Park on Sunday. “If folks can walk into the park with a fourfoot alligator and not get seen, people are able to do anything.”

Elected Officials Advocate for Slimmer BQE as Construction Continues

What was supposed to be a temporary measure to extend the life of the triple cantilevered section of the BrooklynQueens Expressway may become permanent boroughwide, with elected officials calling on the federal Department of Transportation to keep just two lanes of traffic running in each direction on the busy roadway.

A February 14th letter sent to United States Department of Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg described the push to keep the BQE at a total of four lanes throughout Brooklyn as “bold, environmentally just and sustainable” and called on the federal government to “commit to transformative change along the entirety of the BQE corridor and prioritize the reimagining of how this structure interacts with environmental justice.” The letter, which said that the BQE’s construction harmed numerous Brooklyn communities, was signed by Congressman Dan Goldman; Congresswoman Nydia Velazquez; State Senators Andrew Gounardes, Kristen Gonzalez and Julia Salazar; Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso; Assemblymembers Jo Anne Simon, Robert Carroll, Maritza Davila, Emily Gallagher, Marcela Mitaynes and Phara Souffrant Forrest; and City Council Members Alexa Aviles, Jennifer Gutierrez, Shahana Hanif and Crystal Hudson.

Brooklyn Paper reported that the Adams administration will be requesting funding to fix the roadway from the federal Department of Transportation’s Infrastructure Deal, and the city is finalizing its proposal to repair the crumbling section of the BQE in Brooklyn Heights. While the city had initially proposed that the highway’s third lane be reserved for bus or carpool usage or as a shoulder, it later said that it would pursue the minimal number of lanes allowed by the federal government in an effort to reduce pollution and improve public health.

The letter warned that allowing three lanes of traffic in each direction would have at least six million vehicles traversing

the Brooklyn Heights section of the roadway, which would only generate more traffic instead of improving congestion on the already crowded highway. While the DOT will not be making the final decision on the BQE’s width, it could choose not to approve the project as proposed by the city and decline to fund the effort.

Self-Driving Flaws Prompt Massive Tesla Recall

Upward of 362,750 Tesla vehicles are being subject to a recall because of an issue with the car’s experimental driver-assistance software, known as Full Self-Driving Beta or FSD Beta.

A recall notice issued on February 15 said that the software could allow affected cars to “exceed speed limits or travel through intersections in an unlawful or unpredictable manner,” which could increase the risk of a crash.

The recall affects 2016-2023 Model S, Model X, 2017-2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y vehicles that have the selfdriving software or are pending installation. According to the recall notice, the software issue could have cars in turnonly lanes traveling straight through an intersection, failing to come to a complete stop at a stop sign, proceeding through intersections with yellow lights without exercising necessary caution or exceeding posted speed limits.

Owners will be notified by mail if their cars are subject to the recall, and Tesla will be releasing an over-the-air update at no cost. Tesla CEO Elon Musk objected to the use of the term “recall,” describing it as “anachronistic” and “just flat wrong” for an issue that can be fixed with a software update.

According to CNBC, the FSD Beta software is only available to drivers who already have the company’s premium FSD driver assistance system in their vehicles, a $15,000 option that can also be billed at $199 per month, and who earn a high driver safety score from Tesla, which monitors their driving habits. The company also noted that despite the “self-driving” name, its cars are not autonomous, and drivers must be ready to steer their vehicles or hit the brakes at any time while their car is in operation to ensure their safety.

DELINUT FILLED BISCOTTI

⅓ cup sugar

⅓ cup brown sugar

¾ stick margarine, softened

1 ½ tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. vanilla extract

2 eggs

2 cup flour

Delinut cream

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a mixer, beat together the sugars, margarine, baking powder, and vanilla extract. Add the eggs and flour, and mix until a dough forms.

3. Scoop the dough onto a sheet of parchment paper.

4. Place another paper on top, then roll out the dough into a rectangle measuring approximately 12 inches by 8 inches. (Alternatively, roll it into two smaller rectangles.)

5. Spread the delinut cream onto the dough, leaving a 1-inch border all around.

6. Pick up one side of the parchment, and fold the top section of the dough toward the center. Repeat this step with the lower section of dough, overlapping the edges of the dough in the middle. Pinch the edges together, then seal the sides.

7. Carefully flip over the dough so it’s seam-side down on the prepared cookie sheet.

8. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until the biscotti is golden-brown. Remove the biscotti from the oven, and allow it to cool on the pan for 30 minutes.

9. Remove it from the pan, and cut it into slices or wedges.

There’s

a mild obsession with Yiddish productions among youngsters. (If you’re a parent, you know what I’m talking about.) These hourslong plays are a magical conglomeration of well-told story, sidesplitting humor, superb talent and fantastic visuals — not the least of which are the characters themselves.

Each character has its own unique look, from head to toe. And while many audience members know that costume directors are largely responsible for bringing the characters to life, there’s another person behind the scenes who aids greatly in the transformation: the makeup artist.

The Boro Park View recently had the privilege of speaking with Moshe Grunfeld of Punim Chadushes, the man behind the actors’ makeup. What ensued was a most entertaining interview.

FIRST THINGS FIRST

People are generally shocked to learn a heimishe man is a makeup artist. And the question that typically follows is always how Mr. Grunfeld got started.

“I was once on the way to a show,” Mr. Grunfeld says, “and a cop pulled me over for tailgating. He asked me if I was in a rush, and I told him, ‘I’ll be honest, I’m on my way to a big show in NJPAC. I’m the makeup artist, and I have to be there on time.’ He didn’t believe me, so I asked him for permission to step out of the car and showed him all of my makeup. He was floored at the sight and said, I never would have dreamed of meeting a chassidic makeup artist! It’s the coolest thing I’ve ever seen!’ Then he told me to drive safe and let me go.”

While having a nifty profession might seem like an easy way to get out of a ticket, getting to the stage he’s currently at has been a process of several years.

Mr. Grunfeld got started in 2006, when he was a counselor in a camp. When the makeup artist couldn’t make it to the camp’s performance, he stepped in and started playing around.

Obviously, he did a good enough job that word began to spread.

“After that,” Mr. Grunfeld says, “another head counselor called me to come to his camp to help with their play, and then it went from the second head counselor to a third and fourth, all by word of mouth.

“I started doing makeup for camps, and after a

few years, a makeup artist for Interin Kenigreich called and asked me for help. I took the job as an assistant in 2010. It evolved from there, and at one point they hired me as the official makeup artist. Interin Riken was the first show where I had the whole achrayus of makeup on myself. It was a blast of a show, baruch Hashem.”

While Mr. Grunfeld clearly has natural talent, did he take any courses to advance his skills?

“I went to school for two years to really learn the ins and outs of theatrical makeup. I couldn’t attend all the scheduled classes due to Shabbosos and Yomim Tovim, so I hired the teacher to come to my house.”

All that training is being appreciated now by many play-watchers, who wait eagerly for each Yiddish production.

HARD AT WORK

Mr. Grunfeld’s job is to prepare actors from head to neck. This extends far beyond makeup; it means outfitting the players with any specialized facial features their character will require, such as a wig, peyos, mustache or a pointy nose, plus scars, pimples and warts.

It’s not all intuition, Grunfeld says. He doesn’t just dream up the looks for each actor on the spur of the moment. It takes planning. Before the big night, he discusses his vision with the actors and the

director, making sure everyone’s on board.

“Even though I come up with my own ideas and concepts of how the actor will look, I make sure they’re comfortable with what I’m preparing for them. I don’t want actors to be unhappy, saying, ‘Oh, I wanted to look more majestic, or funnier…’”

After planning the look, Mr. Grunfeld gives the actors a concept at the stage rehearsal.

“I usually have it drawn on a paper, describing the colors and shading,” he says. “There was only one time that the director didn’t like a face and I had to redo it ten minutes before the play.”

But before he even gets to that step, a lot of oneon-one discussion takes place with the costume director.

“I always have to be in touch with the costume designer because the colors can’t clash. If someone has a black jacket, for instance, they can’t have a long black wig; it’s just not going to be noticeable enough. I usually sit down with the costume designer and go through the era and characters. If someone has a majestic costume and a small wig, the wig won’t complement the mightiness of the costume; they have to work together.”

STATEMENT FACES

There are so many little elements to take into consideration, but when they come together nicely, the results are stunning.

One of the most successful characters Grunfeld has done was one of the Founding Fathers in Interin Riken

“George Washington was instantly recognizable. Another set of faces that were really interesting to make up was the cast in the production Tak-

tik. I had to come up with different ways to demonstrate that the people were a little off… For example, one guy had hair coming out of different areas of his face, all very unexpectedly.”

It was extreme — and very memorable.

Completely changing the form of a face involves unique tools of the trade, Mr. Grunfeld shares. “There are special prosthetic pieces we prepare before a show if we want to change the structure of a face.”

In Interin Shverd Mr. Grunfeld used one of these prosthetic pieces to craft a flesh wound on the face of a character. “It was a statement piece. When he walked onto stage, people knew he’s not up to anything good.”

These prosthetics give makeup artists the ability to craft characters on a whole different level, and that’s a level Mr. Grunfeld wants to spend more time on.

“Even though everything has been very successful until now, I’m always looking to up my game. For the upcoming play, I’m planning to take a whole different route.”

THE NIGHT OF

Four hours before the curtain opens, Mr. Grunfeld is already beginning his work, bringing the unique characters to life. On average, he prepares 30 actors in one night, beginning his work with those in the first scene, in order of appearance.

“By the time I do those in the third scene,” Mr. Grunfeld says, “the actors in the first scene are already on stage.”

A basic face can be finished in as little as 30 minutes, but one that requires prosthetics can take up to three hours, even when working with a team of two artists.

What happens when one actor has to change personas in the middle of a play?

“There’s usually enough time between scenes to work on the makeup,” Mr. Grunfeld said, “but in Interin Shverd, Sender walked off the stage and came back as Tzemach only seventeen

seconds later! Everything had to be perfectly timed. The costume designer had seven seconds to change his costume, and I had ten seconds to redo his peyos and attach a beard with clips. It was crazy, but worked out surprisingly well.”

When the curtain finally falls, Mr. Grunfeld is there to reverse the process. Helping the actors remove their makeup is a job unto itself. Simply showering won’t remove glue that holds beards and peyos in place.

“It can take hours and hours, and still might not come off completely,” Mr. Grunfeld says.

But he has a special makeup remover that gets rid of all residue. The only lingering part of the play will be good memories!

BEYOND THE STAGE

Though our conversation focuses mainly on his work for Yiddish productions, Mr. Grunfeld explains that his makeup skills are put to use throughout the rest of the year, as well.

These occasions range from prepping faces for advertisements and camp videos to making up private clients for Purim. He’s even done the makeup for the human-acted comics that ran in Ah Blik

But it’s the private clients who make for the most amusing stories. These clients visit Mr. Grunfeld’s makeup studio in his Pomona residence and undergo radical transformations for their own unique purposes.

One recent story involved Mr. Grunfeld’s friend, who had become close to a young man from a nonfrum background and helped him come closer to Torah u’mitzvos. The young man’s father was not thrilled with this development, to say the least, and he harbored animosity toward this frum mentor.

When the boy became engaged to a religious girl, the father openly told the mentor that he didn’t want to see him at the chasunah. But the latter wanted to be there, both for the bachur and for himself, so he showed up at Moshe Grunfeld’s studio and underwent a transformation.

“He was at the wedding from the chuppah until the very end,” Mr. Grunfeld recounts. “The father thought he was just one of the many frum people that his son had gotten to know.”

Perhaps, though, the most dramatic transformation Mr. Grunfeld has managed to do was for a recent sheva brachos

“Somebody hired Langsam and Feldman [two of the Interin actors] for a show at a sheva brachos, but they didn’t want the typical entertainment; they wanted something different,” Mr. Grunfeld says. “At the sheva brachos, Feldman called up someone who was introduced as a rosh yeshivah from Lakewood to give a speech. The hall was full, with hundreds of people, and they were all respectfully just sitting and listening to the ‘rosh yeshivah.’

“All of a sudden, Velvi Feldman interrupted the speaker, saying, ‘Nu, shoin genig geredt! Kenst shoin reden azoi vi ah normale mentch! You’ve spoken enough! You can already speak like a regular person!’

“That’s when the ‘rosh yeshivah’ responded, ‘Nu, ich ken shoin redden azoi vi Tzemach? Can I already speak like Tzemach [an Interin character]?’ It was hilarious! It hadn’t occurred to anyone even for a second that it was Langsam in disguise!”

POWER TO CONCEAL, POWER TO REVEAL

There’s something so exciting about the ability to conceal and the ultimate surprise of a reveal. And while makeup is a finite object, it reminds us that we’re in a time of hester panim, in which things can appear far different from what they actually are. But once the “makeup” is removed, we can better appreciate that which has been concealed.

Moshe Grunfeld, through his profession, has a constant reminder of this, for he holds a unique seat from which he gets to see the simcha that comes from transforming things into the unrecognizable.

May his eyes — and ours — behold a time in which this whole world is transformed, with no makeup necessary.

Tips for the Perfect Purim Panim

Mr. Grunfeld has spent years learning how to transform actors into their characters by utilizing stage makeup, hats and hair. Now Mr. Grunfeld invites you to learn a few tricks of the trade as he walks us through a do-it-yourself transition from yingel to yungerman. You, too, can achieve that perfect Purim panim!

STEP 1:

Pull apart the hair you’ll be using for the beard to fluff it up.

STEP 2:

Using a pencil, lightly draw the shape of a beard on the face. (Remember: You don’t want the outline to be seen after the beard is applied.)

STEP 3: Apply a thin layer of glue to the area where the beard will be.

STEP 4: Pull out small bundles from the bunch of hair.

STEP 5: Cut the top of each bunch straight across to ensure that all pieces are even.

STEP 6:

Attach the bunches of hair to the glue on the face. The untrimmed edges should be at the bottom. Layer the beard as you work, starting from the back.

STEP 7: Trim the beard and mustache so they appear as you’d like it.

STEP 8:

Add clip-on peyos to easily complete the look!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

The glue used to attach faux facial hair cannot simply be washed off, as it hardens in water. A special makeup remover must be used to remove the glue.

What are you dressing up as this Purim? And how are you dressing up your car? Yes, your car. It chauffeurs you around so faithfully to deliver your mishloach manos, and it puts up with sticky debris and cranky kids and Purim traffic. It deserves to get dressed up too!

Will you match your car to your family theme? Or give it a theme of its own? Whatever you choose, rev up your imagination for a really fun ride!

Here are some helpful tips and pointers to get you started: Make sure to have lots of fun! The purpose of decorating your car isn’t to stress you out and add another thing to your super-long Purim prep list, but to fill the streets with Purim spirit.

Magnets work best for attaching posters, logos, or cardboard cutouts to the exterior of your vehicle, and they won’t damage its surface.

You can also use painter’s tape to attach things to the exterior of the car. Use a generous amount of tape and apply it with a lot of pressure, as it won’t hold up very well on a moving vehicle. Also, remember to throw a spare roll of tape into the car for mid-Purim emergencies.

To attach items to the roof of the car, use ribbon in a shade that matches the car for the least visibility. Depending on your car’s make and model, it might be difficult to find anchors to hold the ribbons. Check out your vehicle roof in advance to see where strings can be attached. Alternatively, thread clear fishing line through the door frames, and tie it inside the car.

Inflatables are available in a huge variety of designs and are ideal for car roofs, since they are very visible and extremely lightweight.

Stand windshield wipers upright and decorate them. Gloves? Socks? Balloons? What would the wipers be comfortable wearing? The only limit is your imagination.

Use push-pins to attach fabrics to the interior of the car, right above the window, and then allow it to drape out of the open windows.

After attaching everything to your car, take it for a test drive to ensure the decor can stand up to speed.

In our farm-themed car, we stuck the cardboard animal cutouts to the interior and exterior with painter’s tape. It wasn’t sturdy enough to hold up when the sliding door slid in and out, so we only used the other door. Yes, suffering for beauty is still a thing.

Car lights can be found at very affordable price points. Look for models that are magnetic and can be plugged into the car’s cigarette lighter so that no installation is required.

We see this occurring, unfortunately. It is תוארונ ארונ ! What tragedies! We need to make a great improvement in this area. Therefore, I am begging all of you who are here today, and all who are not here today, have pity! Have rachamanus!

ורוזעי והער תא שיא “ - One person should strengthen the other with the correct view to have rachamanus on Klal Yisroel, especially now in the year after Shmitta …. Let us be inspired to make a great tikkun, and ensure that everything (we wear) should be in accordance with the psak of HaRav Elyashiv zt”l and HaRav Wosner zt”l. Their rulings are not hiddurim or extra stringencies, they are basic halacha. This falls under the category ךער םד לע דומעת אל “Don’t not just stand idly and watch your brother’s blood being spilled.” Don’t you all see what is happening?

Every person who improves in this area will merit boundlessly b’gashmiyas and b’ruchniyus, in this world and the next.

The posek hador, Harav Shmuel Halevi Wosner zt"l, stated, "The wigs that were worn approximately sixty years ago even in the more modernized country, Vienna were clearly recognizable from a distance. But the natural-looking sheitels incite the yetzer hara just like hair Who can permit wearing such a sheitel, which is ervah?" 2

Harav Baruch Auerbach zt"l, the son of Harav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach zt"l, related the following episode: "A few years ago, there were many tragedies occurring… People knew that this was a wake-up call from Hashem to repent, yet they were unsure in which area of avodas Hashem they should strengthen themselves. A group of women decided to ask Harav Shlomo Zalman Auerbach what Hashem was requesting of them. The rav's answer was clear and profound: ‘,יתעדל

- In my opinion it is all due to the sheitels!’ And then he added, ‘ עגנאל יד אקווד טשינ ןיימ ךיא ,

- I am not referring only to the long ones! I mean the short ones, as well!’”

When the Wheels Go Round

Every Purim, the bachurim in our community have a ton of fun as they dance in the streets and run around to every gvir in town to collect funds for their yeshivos. Their preferred mode of transportation? Party buses and limos that zip around all day blasting music and spreading Purim spirit.

The purpose of a party bus is to provide enough seating for many bachurim to comfortably travel all day, while the fun factor keeps them going. While many mosdos encourage the idea of collecting funds, not all allow the party buses, citing unnecessary luxury, cost, and safety as concerns. Many have their bachurim chauffeured around town in their regular buses or in rented Sprinters and vans, but the boys’ energy rocks those buses just the same.

COME ONE, COME ALL

Party buses come in a variety of sizes, and some can fit an astonishing number of people. Smaller, van-like party buses can seat about 12 people, but on the larger end are coach buses that can hold up to 50 or even 80 people! Most of the party buses we see on Purim are medium-sized and fit an average of 25 people, which is just about right for a class of bachurim.

Seating on party buses usually wraps around the inside of the vehicle in a U-shape, leaving empty space in the middle. Some buses may have LED lighting on the walls and ceiling and high-end speaker systems so you never have to stop dancing.

(Watch out for potholes and short stops.)

FOR THE CAR PEOPLE

There are a few car models that are commonly used as party buses. For the car geeks, here are a couple of models you might see on the road:

MERCEDES SPRINTER S-STYLE PARTY BUS

The Mercedes Sprinter S-style looks like a standard Sprinter from the outside, but is fully loaded inside. These vans accommodate up to twelve passengers, so they’re great for smaller, more intimate groups. They can have all the trappings of a bigger party bus, though with much less space, of course.

FORD F550

The Ford F550 is designed to fit 25-30 people and looks like a school bus from the outside, if a bit smaller. It’s usually outfitted to serve as a standard party bus, which means it’s equipped with U-shaped seating, LED lighting and surroundsound systems. Many also have a built-in cooler for drinks, too.

The International 3200 KK38 is similar to the Ford F550, but is a bit bigger and can accommodate slightly larger groups.

COACH BUSES

These can fit 50-70 passengers and include lots of upgraded entertainment features.

PARTY BUSES AND PURIM

Party buses sound like fun—for the boys. For the drivers, maybe not so much. As you can imagine, driving a bus packed with 30 very enthusiastic bachurim all Purim can be… a lot. Especially if you don’t know what you’re getting yourself into; many non-Jewish drivers have no idea what Purim is all about and can get a little grumpy once they realize that they’re driving around on the busiest day of the year with a bus full of teenage boys dancing in the back. (A generous tip can usually smooth things over.)

Whether you’ll be driving around this Purim in a Sprinter, school bus, party bus, or your family’s minivan, turn up the music and have a blast, because it’s not so much about the vehicle you’re in as being happy throughout the ride.

UNIQUE EXPERIENCES

Besides regular, run-of-the-mill, over-the-top party buses, there are a couple of vehicles out there that offer unique experiences and features. If you’re getting bored of the usual dance floors and flashing neon lights, you can try one of these.

DANIEL’S CHICKEN PARTY BUS NYC

Because who doesn’t like chicken? And if you like chicken enough, I don’t think you’ll make a fuss about chicken on a bus!

The first thing you’ll see when you board Daniel’s Chicken Party Bus is a wide assortment of percussion instruments such as tambourines, bongos, maracas and cowbells. There’s a mic as well, for when you get very enthusiastic about your music making. There are also two hammocks in case you exhaust yourself while singing. Sadly, though, the bus does not serve chicken; the name was inspired by the slightly eccentric bus owner.

LIMO HISTORY

Though party buses have become popular fairly recently, luxurious travel has been around for decades. The most iconic luxurious vehicle is the limousine, which makes a statement wherever it goes. The term limousine derives from the small French region Limousin, where some say the concept for the limo was born. Limos debuted back when horse-drawn carriages were still a thing. In most carriages, both driver and passenger were exposed to the elements, but in the late 1800s, the rich began having the passenger compartment enclosed so the passengers were protected from the weather. The driver, however, was still left exposed. When automobiles came around, rich folks expected the same arrangement with their chauffeurs. Thus, in the early 1900s, a limousine was defined as “a closed car seating three to five inside, with the driver’s seat outside.” That must have come across rather rude.

It took a while for rich people to have pity on their drivers, but eventually, their cars began sporting a roofed enclosure for the driver, as well, with a partition inside the car

DOUBLE DECKER DEN

This super cool bus is every kid’s dream, although I think adults might find it just as much fun. Located in England, this double-decker bus brings jungle gym fun to you. It has two floors of ball pits, slides and fun play areas so your kids can play to their heart’s content.

Nowadays, the definition of a limousine is a luxury car that has a partition between the driver and passengers, while a stretch limousine is a long, luxury sedan with more than four doors (what most laymen call a limousine).

Stretch limousines were first invented to transport bands and all their music equipment. The first ones were built in Arkansas around 1928 and were called “big band buses.” Eventually, they became more widely used as a standard mode of transportation for the rich and famous who wanted to make a statement.

A symbol of status, of white-glove care, chauffeurs are an extravagance of the elite. Pristinely uniformed, they transport VIPs with respect and five-star service. Bob, bow, and tap your cap!

MADE IN FRANCE

The word sounds French because it is French.

The French noun chauffeur made its way into English in the late nineteenth century. Its literal translation is “one who heats.”

Early chauffeurs never saw an automobile in their life. The word was used to describe soot-covered men who shoveled coal into steam engines.

As automobiles appeared on the scene, the French extended the word beyond steam engine stokers. Men who drove the incredible “horseless carriages” were called chauffeurs as well.

Later, the term evolved to mean people who are hired to drive others.

BEHIND THE WHEEL

What kind of person is suited to the job?

A qualified chauffeur knows when to make small talk with his passenger and when to keep quiet. He knows the roads and drives safely. Of course, he must also be very punctual, as well as courteous, calm, pleasant and polite. After all, he’s providing a service typically enjoyed by the elite. Finally, he must enjoy driving!

CHAUFFEUR: IS THAT JUST A FANCY WORD FOR DRIVER?

While the duty of a driver is to get a passenger to their destination, the job of the chauffeur encompasses more. A chauffeur is a licensed professional, hired to care for the passenger in addition to taking them where they must go. Chauffeurs generally drive upper-class vehicles such as stretch limos or SUVs, and are somewhat of a personal assistant to the VIP client who hired them.

AHEAD OF THE DRIVER’S LICENSE: THE CHAUFFEUR BADGE

In 1903, New York became the first state to issue “chauffeur badges” for qualified cab drivers or other paid drivers (think bus drivers, truck drivers and the like). It was a required license, imprinted on a small scrap of metal. While on the job, drivers would clip the badge to their coats or hats.

That first year, 2,382 chauffeurs were registered in New York. Many states followed New York’s lead and issued similar badges. The badges came in varying shapes and designs, from decorative crests to shields, ovals or the shape of the state.

By 1924, New York State required all drivers to be licensed, and by the 1950s, paper licenses replaced the badges.

Vintage chauffeur badges became a collectible item. The rarest badges come from smaller states that had fewer taxi drivers, unlike busy hubs like New York and California.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE

Limousine is another French word that often goes hand-inhand with chauffeur. Part of driving in style with a personal chauffeur is the use of an elegant luxury vehicle.

“Limousine” does not refer to a specific car model; rather, it means a larger-than-usual car with a partition between the driver’s seat and the passengers.

The first stretch limo hit the roads in 1928.

Limos were always considered a luxury. In 1939, they were the first car type to have a cooling system. The air conditioning unit was very expensive, inefficient, and took up nearly half the trunk space. Luckily, things have improved since then.

This famous car was first built in California in 1986. It was later neglected for decades before being restored and displayed in a museum in Orlando in March 2022.

MEAL FOR THE WEEK

MATTY GRUNSWEIG, 8TH GRADE, BNOS ZION OF BOBOV

In 1925, in the small town of Lypcha located in Czechoslovakia, my great-grandfather, Reb Yitzchok Grunsweig, was born to his parents, Rabbi and Rebbetzin Moshe Grunsweig. Rabbi Grunsweig was the Rav of the town. When the war broke out, Yitzchok was a seventeen-year-old bachur learning in the Yeshiva of Munkatch. From there the Nazis came and dragged him to the concentration camps of Auschwitz.

Every day in the camp they were given a small, hard piece of bread, which was supposed to last for the entire day. On Shabbos, like many people, he took off a piece of bread and put it away for shalosh seudos.

One week, my great-grandfather divided the bread in three. He ate one piece, set aside the second piece for shalosh seudos, and the third he kept for melaveh malkah

That night, when he lay on his hard bed, he had a dream. He dreamed that his special grandfather, Rav Usher Zelig Grunsweig, who was the Rav of Dolha, was sitting at the table surrounded by his chassidim and family eating melaveh malkah. In his dream, Yitzchok’s grandfather kept on sending him food, which he then ate.

Soon Yitzchok woke up from his dream, and he felt full, like he had just finished a whole meal for the first time since he had arrived at Auschwitz. And as long as my great-grandfather kept putting away bread for melaveh malkah, the dream kept repeating itself.

He later said that this was what helped him survive through the week and through the war. For the rest of his life, he would be careful about washing for melaveh malkah every week.
