SAFETY IS IN QUESTION (Re: Down a Snowy Slope, Issue 16) Last year when my daughter came home from school with a permission slip to sign for snow tubing, I looked closely at the fine text. The parent’s signature signed away their rights to sue if anything (accidents or even deaths) were to occur. I researched it further and discovered that snow tubing is considered one of the top ten most-dangerous sports. The state of Pennsylvania will not even allow a person to sue if he is injured while snow tubing, because the person understands that they are involving themselves in a dangerous activity. I believe that parents have the right to decide whether or not they want their child to participate in such an activity, and also to take their children to the attractions of their choice. However, I am asking of schools to please not take their students on trips that involve a parent signing such a form. It isn’t fair to a child who will not be able to participate in a school trip because her parents do not feel comfortable allowing her to go. There are enough places to visit that don’t involve a known danger. My own feeling is that if there is such a waiver, enough people have gotten seriously hurt (and then went ahead and sued) to warrant the place having people sign the form. Sincerely, L.B.H.

A SHABBOS HUMIDITY SOLUTION (Re: The Winter Hunt for Health, Issue 16) Thank you for the article on humidifiers. What a breath of fresh air! It was really comprehensive, yet simplified for the consumer. According to my knowledge, a cheap cool-air humidifier may be refilled on Shabbos. One should ask a rav. This is so because the water does not get cooked up, nor does the machine stop when the tank is

empty. It continues spinning, and the spinning motion simply churns up a mist that is emitted from the machine (like a trigger spray). The one I have has an extralarge opening in the front of the cover through which water can be poured in. Therefore, it can be filled without touching or moving the machine on Shabbos. R.K.

NATURAL HUMIDIFIERS (Re: The Winter Hunt for Health, Issue 16) Thank you for a delightful magazine. In your recent issue, you provided very helpful information in regard to properly maintaining levels of humidity in one’s home. There is another excellent and natural way to obtain that: with indoor plants! There are a variety of houseplants that offer a healthy source of humidity, and also deliver healthy air quality. Some great plants for the purpose are the spider plant, Boston fern and peace lily, and there are many others. Get yourself some nice plants, reap the benefits of better indoor air, and bask in their verdant beauty. Brieger Family RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: Thank you so much to both letter-writers for taking the time to write in. In regard to refilling humidifiers on Shabbos, many of them, even the more-expensive models, can be refilled without moving the machinery or changing its function. Of course, one must consult their rav for guidance. In regard to the plants that humidify and purify, yes! Hashem’s creations are amazing! However, when the steam is working full force, I don’t believe that plants can provide enough humidity, unless you have very many of them. According to a Dr. Bill Wolverton, NASA scientist and the man who extensively studied plants’ abilities to clean the air, the areca palm is one of the highest-rated plants for humidifying the air. One large areca palm transpires about 1 gallon of water per 24 hours. The large-space humidifier I have releases 4 to 5 gallons per day when the steam is working hard. You’d need a few palms to adequately humidify a large

space. Plants are great, but they may have their limitations when up against heating.

RE: DON’T TEST MY PATIENCE (Inbox, Issue 15) Thank you very much for providing a column where readers have the opportunity to communicate and to share ideas on how to make our community a better place for everyone! I’m responding to the man who wrote about driving to work every morning in the back of a bus (and in front of a bus, too...) and trying to be patient at every stop. We have to stay focused and remember that the reason we go out to work is to be able to support our family and have the money to pay for our children to learn Torah. Chazal tell us: “Ein ha’olam miskayem ela bishvil hevel pihem shel tinokos shel beis rabon.” The entire world is able to exist only because of the children who learn the Torah. Every child who goes onto the bus is sustaining the entire world, including you and your job! The drivers of those buses also have a big part in keeping the world in existence, and they deserve their full tip, no matter if they wait an extra half a minute for your child or not. So please make sure to leave your house/shul early enough so you can be patient while waiting in the back of a bus, because by doing that, you’re also having a part in the mitzvah of limud Torah! Thank you! Staying Focused

KYIV CORRECTION (Re: Flames in the Frozen Tundra, Issue 15) Our family enjoys reading The Boro Park View every week. It is a fresh voice and provides a great “view” of our community. However, we’d like to point out an error. The title of the article “Flames in the Frozen Tundra” was completely inaccurate in describing the Ukraine. “Tundra” usually refers to an area of (1) “permanently frozen soil,” or (2) “no month with an average temperature in excess of 50°F.” Kyiv, with over 180 frost-free days per year, does not satisfy the first definition. Also, it has five months (May through September) with average temperatures over 50 degrees Fahrenheit, thus not satisfying the second definition. In fact , Bangor, ME, has lower average temperatures than Kyiv, and Boston averages just 4 degrees higher than Kyiv. Odessa had winter temperatures similar to NYC! My wife was born in Kyiv and lived there for twenty years. She can vouch for this information firsthand. Besides this error, the article was well researched and appeared accurate. Mordechai Drucker

(Re: Mitgemacht: Chesed, Issue 14) I’m writing this letter in response to your Yiddish article. I feel the writer missed the point a bit, and I wanted to share my story in hopes that it can help her, as well as others, who face similar predicaments. The writer’s daughter is in so much pain. She wants her mommy — the mother who is so busy helping everyone. It is that lack of connection that’s causing her extreme reaction and troubling behavior. I was there once. I was the type of person who loved to help other people. I also always had different business ideas I wanted to pursue. Now I know that they were all forms of escape. PA RS H A S VAY E C H I Mr. Rosen’s business empire was quite impressive. His products were a staple on all the kosher grocery store shelves, and they could be found in just about every Yiddishe household. As charitable as he was successful, Mr. Rosen was very close with his rebbe and was a pillar of his chassidus, as well as a baal tzedakah with a big heart and an

Whoever he’d designate would be, in a sense, like a king, making decisions that would affect so many people, including the livelihood of the entire extended family. He would also be something similar to the “Kohen'' of the family in the sense that so much ruchniyus would ride on his decisions; both the tzedakah-giving and supporting the talmidei chachamim would be dependent on him. Whoever would run the business would have to be a strong leader, but also kind and compassionate. Mr. Rosen’s successor would need to be someone who could be relied upon to make sound decisions after careful deliberation, taking many factors into account before coming to a wise conclusion. Until recently, Mr. Rosen had been planning to name his eldest son as his successor, as was expected. However, that changed one evening after Mr. Rosen saw his son explode in anger — and not for the first time. Upon further reflection, Mr. Rosen realized that his son truly had an anger problem. Mr. Rosen was forced to admit that his eldest son was also very impulsive, frequently making rash decisions without considering the consequences. Mr. Rosen recalled a teaching of the Sifri: “Bah lichlal ka’as bah lichlal ta’us — One who gets angry will make mistakes [wrong decisions].â€? Wrong decisions could have devastating consequences on the business and, consequently, on the whole family, not to mention the community to which he contributed so greatly. It was with a heavy heart that Mr. Rosen made the difficult decision to bypass his eldest son and name a different son as his successor. In this week’s parsha, as Yaakov Avinu’s petirah looms near, he gathers his sons to speak with them. When Yaakov addresses Reuven, he tells him, “Unstable as water, you shall not have superiority‌â€? (Bereishis 49:4). Rashi explains that Reuven had originally been fit to become king and Kohen in the family, but because of his anger and instability, Reuven was no longer fit

Most were employees in the business, but many were kollel yungerleit, supported in their learning. As Mr. Rosen grew older, he began to reflect more and more on who would take him over as head of the business.

to receive these blessings. The Shem MiShmuel explains that Reuven lost three gifts as a result of his anger and impulsivity: the bechorah, the kehunah and malchus. Reuven’s gifts were given instead to his brothers: Yosef Hatzaddik received the bechorah, Levi received the kehunah, and Yehudah received malchus. Rabbi Mani bar Patish said, “Whoever becomes angry, even if greatness has been decreed for him min haShamayim, he is brought down. We learn this from Eliav, who became angry with Dovid” (Pesachim 66b). After Eliav became angry with Dovid, the kingship was taken from Eliav and given to Dovid instead. Just think, a person could have been endowed from Shamayim with the greatest gifts imaginable — and then lose those very gifts simply because they did not control their anger. The en-

tire course of Jewish history could have been completely different if not for Reuven’s anger and impulsivity: All the kings of Klal Yisroel and all the Kohanim of Klal Yisroel would have descended from Reuven, not Yehudah or Levi. And later, the kingship would have rested with Eliav, and not with Dovid, if not for anger. We cannot know whether we have lost any gifts through anger, just as we cannot know what gifts have been decreed for us. But we all know that anger is destructive, and we know that relationships we cherish are damaged through anger. It may be difficult to hold back in a moment of anger, but we can focus on all the good we have in our life and all the good we hope to accomplish in this world — none of it benefits from our anger. On the contrary, we may stand to lose it all.

Hadran Alach Talmud Bavli - An Epic Simchas HaTorah as One Daf Yomi Cycle Ends and Another Begins It was a monumental celebration of Torah as over 100,000 people celebrated the 13th Global Siyum HaShas of Daf Yomi at twin events in New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium and Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on January 1. Organizers at Agudath Israel of America found themselves scrambling to accommodate the high demand for tickets for The Siyum at MetLife Stadium, adding Barclays Center as a second venue at the end of November. All of MetLife Stadium’s approximately 92,000 seats sold out in advance of the Siyum HaShas, with another 14,000 tickets sold at Barclays Center, filling the arena to near capacity. The brisk winds and the occasional snowflake that made MetLife Stadium feel far colder than the relatively mild winter temperature of 40 degrees were no match for the warmth of ahavas haTorah, and at both venues, participants were enthralled by the four-hour-long program that included the Novominsker Rebbe, shlit”a, the Vyelipoler Rebbe, shlit”a, the Kossover Rebbe, shlit”a, the Viznitzer Rebbe from Monsey, shlit”a, Antwerp’s Chief Rav Aharon Schiff, shlit”a, Rav Aryeh Malkiel Kotler, shlit”a, Rav Yissocher Frand, shlit”a, Rav Uren Reich, shlit”a, Rav Elya Ber Wachtfogel, shlit”a, Rav Yeruchim Olshin, shlit”a, and Rav Elya Brudny, shlit”a. Numerous

revered gedolim and rabbanim graced the daises at both events, where tributes to elderly Holocaust survivors and the over 30,000 children who collectively completed all of Shisha Sidrei Mishna highlighted limud Torah as the foundation of Klal Yisroel throughout the ages and the road map to our future. Equally inspiring were videos that showed Daf Yomi shiurim all across the globe and told how the flame of Torah burned brightly even during the Holocaust, with the siyum on Shas at MetLife Stadium made from a War World II-era Gemara that was used in the DP camps. At both venues, the spontaneous singing and dancing that erupted following the siyum on Shas were the highlight of the day, the air electric as hearts overflowing with simcha celebrated the end of a 2,711-page-long journey just moments before the cycle was started anew with the opening words of Masechta Brachos. The epic display of achdus was another facet of the Siyum HaShas that touched many in attendance, with participants representing every segment of the Jewish community bringing to life Rabbi Meir Shapiro’s dream of using Daf Yomi as a vehicle to unite Klal Yisroel. Heartwarming stories emerged in the days following the siyum, with MetLife Stadium guest services representative Rosemary Yacono describing the joy and sense of community that she was in evidence, noting it was among the most emotional events she has ever seen in her 18 years at the stadium. Local EMS crews who were working at MetLife Stadium said that they were stunned by the number of siyum participants who stopped to thank them as they walked by, saying they had “never experienced anything like it before.” Yeshiva World News reported that a state trooper who had been working at MetLife Stadium during the siyum pulled over a Jewish driver on the Garden State Parkway the very next day for a traffic violation, asking the man if had “learned his page yet today.” When the driver replied that he had not, the trooper agreed to let him off with a warning if he agreed to do Daf Yomi that day. Bringing the words of the Hadran to life on the

first day of the new Daf Yomi cycle on Sunday, 5,000 people signed up to learn the first page of Masechta Brachos in memory of ArtScroll founder Rabbi Meir Zlotowitz, a”h, whose translations opened up the world of Shas to the masses. It was a standing room—only audience at Lakewood’s Lake Terrace as 300 people turned out for a live Daf Yomi shiur given l’ilui nishmas Rabbi Zlotowitz, with another 2,500 joining in remotely, making it the largest Daf Yomi shiur in history.

Cuomo Announces $45M in Security Funding for Shuls and Yeshivos as Thousands March Against Hate in Brooklyn Addressing a crowd of 10,000 who marched across the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday to denounce anti-Semitism, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that an additional $45 million would be devoted to provide additional protections at religious and cultural institutions in New York State. The funding is being made available through the state’s Securing Communities Against Hate Crimes Grant Program and would be earmarked for shuls, schools, community centers, non-profit day care centers and day camps. Referencing both the Chanukah attack in Monsey and numerous anti-Semitic incidents in Brooklyn, Cuomo vowed to stamp out hate crimes, something he described as “the cancer of hate and intolerance.” Cuomo led the marchers through Manhattan and across the Brooklyn Bridge, carrying a banner bearing the words “No Hate, No Fear.” "I'm heartened to see this amazing show of support and solidarity. Literally over 10,000 people have shown up to show support and love for the Jewish community, and that's New York at her best," said Cuomo. But Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein accused the governor of seizing the moment for political gain, saying that the $45 million in funding had already been approved a year ago in the state budget and calling for new funding to be dedicated to protecting schools and shuls.

Local Man Recognized with Dual Awards for Quick Thinking in Chanukah Terror Spree The Monsey area man who put himself in harm’s way during the Chanukah attack in Rabbi Rottenberg’s home, while also helping police nab the perpetrator a short time later, has been recognized for his bravery by elected officials.

Yosef Gluck was presented with the 2019 Ramapo Freedom Award last week by Town Supervisor Michael Specht. Accepting the award at Ramapo Town Hall in a room packed with elected officials and local leaders, 32-year-old Gluck publicly thanked Hashem for the miracles that took place during the attack, noting that had Grafton Thomas come just a few minutes earlier when the house was fuller, or slightly later when there would have been women and children in attendance, the situation could have been far worse. Gluck rescued a child from Rabbi Rottenberg’s home and threw a marble-topped table at Thomas, ending the attack and prompting Thomas to flee the scene. Gluck recorded Thomas’s license plate as he sped away and gave it to authorities who were able to pinpoint his car using plate readers at the George Washington Bridge. Standing with his wife and five children, Gluck was recognized yet again for his heroism by State Senator David Carlucci who presented him with the New York State Senate Liberty Medal on Sunday. The medal is the highest civilian honor awarded by the State Senate. Gluck downplayed his actions saying, “G-d placed me in this place at this moment to do what I had to do, so I don’t even think I had a choice.” But Carlucci discounted Gluck’s humility, noting that the casualties would have been far worse had he not intervened. “We can rest a little bit easier because of the heroic work that Yosef did,” said Carlucci.

Addressing Wave of Hate Crimes, de Blasio Meets With Community Leaders Just hours after Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein introduced legislation that would allow stiffer consequence for those who perpetuate hate crimes, Mayor Bill de Blasio paid a personal visit to Boro Park to discuss the recent rise in anti-Semitic attacks in the city. Boro Park 24 reported that the mayor met with community leaders last Thursday at the Hatzolah garage on 14th Avenue and 38th Street. According to one participant, the conversation included an open discussion with de Blasio addressing recent attacks in Boro Park, Williamsburg and Crown Heights, and methods for increasing police presence in those areas. Speaking with reporters after the meeting, the mayor said that he understood the concerns about the increasing frequency and violence of the attacks in the area. “I think the community is very appreciative of the efforts of the NYPD, but they want to see more and we talked about what that will be and what needs to be,” said de Blasio. “I think there’s real recognition that we’ve got to get to the root causes. We talked about the work of the Office to Prevent Hate Crimes, we talked about what we’re going to do in the schools.”

He needs to know any unusual information regarding people who take loans from the gemach. It’s other people’s money, you know.” “I would call her.” “Who, Tzippy?” “Yes.” Without noticing, she circled the words “Bais Yaakov” with a thick red line. “That’s probably not such a good idea.” Her mother smiled thinly. “I imagine that the Potolsky family knows that their invitation is making waves… I don’t think it’s so nice to run and call her.” “I think I would have called in any case, even if there wouldn’t be anything strange about the invitation. You know, just to compliment her on how pretty it came out and all that.” “Is it especially pretty?” Her mother ex-

amined the invitation. “Looks quite standard to me. It’s got this fresh, clean look, but it’s not something I would run to call and compliment her about.” “But that’s what’s usually done. Why not give a kallah a good feeling?” “That’s true, and it’s normally a nice gesture,” her mother agreed. “But here I’m afraid that no one will view your phone call as an effort to make the kallah feel good, but rather as a way to satiate your curiosity,

much money the visitor would be asking for, and how urgent the loan was. Even more valuable — he could sense whether the loan was a safe one or not. Not that he relied on his intuition completely; many good, experienced people had fallen victim to defaults on loans, and to this day he was dealing with unpaid loans. Still, he had developed a pretty sharp gut feeling. And it was almost always right. But now he didn’t feel anything. It was as though he was meeting

“Tatty needs to know any unusual information regarding people who take loans from the gemach. It’s other people’s money, you know.” don’t you think?” Avigail chuckled, and didn’t answer. “Let’s wait for Tatty to finish his meetings for today, and I’ll show him the invitation,” Mrs. Auerbach decided. “You know, Avigail, very soon you’re going to make so many circles around those words that we won’t be able to see them, and we’ll both think that what it said was just our imagination!” “When does Tatty finish meeting with people?” “Officially at 10:30. But practically speaking, the meetings can stretch till after 12. I hope he doesn’t have a very long line tonight; he was exhausted yesterday.” Thankfully, the line wasn’t especially long that night, and by 10:15 Reb Menachem Auerbach was just about ready to close up shop. But then there was a knock at the door, and the screen mounted on the wall indicated that it was Eliyahu Potolsky. “Hello, Rabbi Potolsky.” The gemach director bid farewell to the borrower he was finishing up with and raised his eyes to the new arrival. Years of being involved in this field had sharpened his sensitivities, and he could sniff out — usually with 90 percent accuracy — how

Reb Eliyahu at Shacharis in shul. No, that wasn’t a good analogy, because when someone owed money and he was hard-pressed to pay, it was evident not only within the walls of this room. So it was as if... as if Eliyahu was a resident of the neighborhood who had never borrowed a thing from him. That was his feeling now when looking at Potolsky. “I came for two things,” Potolsky said as he sat down. “Actually, three.” And before Reb Menachem could leaf through his blue notebook, Potolsky pulled out a bundle of bills in a rubber band from his suit pocket. “Here is 40,000 shekels. That’s the loan I took a month and a half ago,” he said. Reb Menachem stared at him. “Wow,” he noted quietly. “The loan is for 10 months, and you’re returning it in less than two...” He took the wad of bills and began counting under his breath, fingering the notes one after the other. “It’s all here,” he said as he opened the notebook and crossed out the loan details. He hadn’t yet had a chance to find the actual promissory note in the binder when Potolsky said, “Now I want to ask for a loan of 20,000 shekels.” “You’re a very organized person, Reb Eliyahu,” Rabbi Auerbach said,

“but you could have returned just half of the 40,000. We spoke about repayment in installments in any case.” “I prefer not to mix up the different accounts. This new loan is for the mortgage of my older daughter. We haven’t finished paying for her apartment yet.” “And the 40,000?” “That was for my second daughter.” The gemach director was quiet as he turned the plastic sheet protectors in his binder. The descriptions his wife and daughter had shared about their recent encounter with Potolsky’s daughter rose in his mind, and warning bells went off. What was going on there with the second daughter? “Besides that, I wanted to consult with you about who in the neighborhood could be a recipient of ma’aser money.” “How much?” “About 18,000 shekels.” Reb Menachem’s fingers were finally holding the right promissory note, but now he was at a loss for words. “Rabbi Potolsky, could you please explain to me what exactly is going on?” “We got a special grant,” Eliyahu chose his words carefully, “to marry off this daughter. Therefore, I can return everything that I borrowed for her wedding, because I am managing, baruch Hashem, without loans. For the older one, though, I have to continue paying the mortgage as usual...” “And what about the 18,000 that you want to give?” “So I’m not sure how much it’ll be in the end; it depends how much of the total we end up using. For now I brought 10,000. I asked a rav, and he said I don’t have to give ma’aser on the money that we were given specifically for the apartment, but that it is the right thing to give ma’aser from the grant for all of the other expenses. And I had to ask permission from those giving us the money.” “Nu, so take the ma’aser and use it for your older daughter’s mortgage.” The gemach director smiled.

“What could be simpler than that?” “I should give ma’aser to myself?” “Oh, this mortgage is what you committed to pay?” “Part of it.” “Well, then, I guess in that case, it really isn’t right.” He stroked his beard. “What is this grant, may I ask? Do you think we can speak to this donor who gives apartments and money to the needy like that, and try to get him to help out some other young couples?” “Well, it’s not exactly like that.” Eliyahu was a bit uneasy. “It’s something very specific… There’s someone who wanted to donate money in memory of his parents, to a couple whose names are the same as his parents’... rather unusual names.” “What are they?” Reb Menachem was very curious. “Peretz and Tziporah Genendel.” “What siyata d’Shmaya! And those are the names he was looking for? How did he find you?” “Today the whole world is a global village, they say, right? And it did take him time. From what I understand, he’s been working on finding a couple with these names for a few years already.” “Very nice, very nice. It’s always heartwarming to hear such stories of hashgacha pratis. Anyway, if you’re looking for someone to give the ma’aser money to, I think that Ganz could really use it. I don’t want to go into details, but I’m sure you’ve heard what they’re going through...” “Yes, yes.” “And I have two other names, some other people in the neighborhood,” Auerbach said tentatively. “You know what, don’t even tell me who they are. I’ll leave the 10,000 shekels here, and you distribute it, okay? And, please, don’t mention where the money came from...” “Oh, sure, no problem at all. Thank you very, very much. And I’m transferring the guarantors from the 40,000 shekels that you just gave me to the 20,000 that you’re taking now, right?” To be continued...

Biden Holds Steady, Warren Drops, and Bloomberg Surges in Recent Polling THE PULSE: A national poll of self-identified Democrats

and liberal independents conducted over the weekend by Hill-HarrisX showed Joe Biden retaining his national lead at 21%. Bernie Sanders polled at 16%, Warren and Bloomberg tied at 11%, and Pete Buttigieg polled at 6%. THE IMPACT: Biden continues to show his resilience

and staying power. Despite his many mishaps, he still commands a sizable lead and strong support from the Democratic base. Bloomberg’s poll numbers are a surprise, as he has yet to appear in a Democratic debate and is not campaigning in early primary states. It seems that his colossal ad buy is having its desired effect. Warren appears to be locked in a downward spiral as her support for Medicare for All has backfired. Bernie Sanders is drawing progressive support away from Warren, and it now appears that progressive voters are choosing to coalesce around his candidacy. However, it should be noted that these are national poll numbers. Sanders leads in the polls in both New Hampshire and Iowa, and a breakout by Buttigieg in Iowa is possible. Current polling cannot take into account the potential bounce of support and surge of momentum from early state wins.

Castro Withdraws His Candidacy THE PULSE: Former San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro withdrew his nomination for the Democratic presidential nomination. Castro was once considered a rising star in the Democratic Party. His relatively young age and Latino heritage were considered an asset. Castro was the youngest member of the Obama cabinet, where he served as Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. His brother Joaquin is a Democratic congressman representing Texas’s 20th District. Castro favored the decriminalization of illegal border crossings and released detailed policy positions on how to aid people with disabilities. THE IMPACT: Castro failed to gain much traction or

support among Democratic primary voters. His withdrawal will winnow down the field but will only have a minimal impact on those candidates still left in the race. Senator Warren said that she expects Castro “to be a leader in our party and our country for many years to come.”

Trump Orders Killing of Qasem Soleimani, Democratic Contenders Criticize Decision THE PULSE: On Thursday, January 2, President Trump ordered the killing of General Qasem Soleimani. Soleimani was the head of the elite Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. He was arguably the second most important person in the Iranian government. A U.S. Military Reaper drone took out Soleimani while he was at Baghdad airport. The attack killed seven people, including Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy commander of Iran-backed militias operating in Iraq. The killing came on the heels of an attack on the American Embassy by Iranian-backed Iraqi militias. President Trump and Secretary Pompeo claimed that the strike against Soleimani was defensive and meant to stop Soleimani and Iran from carrying out future attacks against America and its allies. Republicans were generally supportive of the president and praised his actions. However, Kentucky Senator Rand Paul was critical of the fact that the president did not seek authorization from Congress before the strike.

DEMOCRATIC RESPONSE: Leading Democratic

presidential contenders roundly condemned the strike. Former Vice President Joe Biden responded to the news of Soleimani’s death by saying that Trump had “just tossed a stick of dynamite into a tinderbox.” Bernie Sanders said, “Trump’s dangerous escalation brings us closer to another disastrous war in the Middle East that could cost countless lives and trillions of more dollars.” Senator Elizabeth Warren called the move “reckless” and said that it “increases the likelihood of more deaths and new Middle East conflict.” South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg said that Soleimani was undoubtedly a threat to safety and security, but that we must “take a strategic, deliberate approach that includes consultation with Congress, our allies, and stakeholders in the Middle East.” Andrew Yang went on record to say that “War with Iran is the last thing we need and is not the will of the American people. We should be acting to de-escalate tensions and protect our people in the region.” Corey Booker was emphatic when he stated that “We have a president who has no strategic plan when it comes to Iran and has only made that region less stable and less safe.” Amy Klobuchar called on the administration “to fully consult with Congress” and questioned the timing of the strike. THE IMPACT: Iran threatened retaliation against U.S. interests, and President Trump threatened counter reprisals. The coalition fighting ISIS announced that it was suspending operations to instead focus on securing U.S. bases in Iraq and the Middle East. The Iraqi Parliament voted to expel U.S. troops from the country, and Iran announced that it would no longer abide by the limitations that it committed to in the Iran nuclear deal. It is an open question as to what happens next. The elimination of Soleimani is a blow to Iranian influence in the region, as he was the mastermind behind Iran’s regional strategy. Theoretically, this should provide a window of opportunity for America and its allies to exert their influence in areas that are currently in flux. However, the death of Soleimani will likely hinder the fight against ISIS, as America will now lose the cooperation of Shias who are opposed to the Sunni group. Furthermore, should the Iraqi government place limits on U.S. activities in the country, or in the unlikely event that it carries out on expelling U.S. troops, it will further hinder U.S. influence in the region. Perhaps the biggest issue would be if Iran rushes to attain a nuclear weapon. The U.S. is currently isolated in its approach to Iran and its nuclear program, and it may find itself in a precarious situation with no good options available to pursue.

As we will soon see, if someone does not think about the ramifications of the laws of ribbis, they could easily violate the Torah in each of the above cases. What is even more important is that the prohibition of ribbis can be avoided in most instances, usually simply by being aware that there is a ribbis issue and creating a heter iska instead, a concept that I will explain. This demonstrates the importance of keeping the prohibition of ribbis in mind and realizing that one needs to ask a shailah regarding what to do when a question of this nature presents itself. First we need to understand why each of the above cases violates ribbis, and then how to avoid violating this serious prohibition.

70 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

Can a notary public who is notarizing a loan violate a Torah prohibition of charging interest? Let us begin by quoting the Mishnah (Bava Metzia 75b): The following people will violate a lo saaseh [if they participate in a ribbis loan]: the lender, the borrower, the cosigner and the witnesses. The Sages rule: Also the scribe who drafted the loan document. Clearly, we see from this mishnah that anyone involved in creating an interest-bearing loan between two Yidden violates a Torah prohibition. To explain the Torah source for this mitzvah, we need to realize the difference between singular and plural, which in modern English has been lost, unlike most languages on the globe. The Torah teaches, “When you (singular) lend money to a member of My people, to the poor person among you, you (singular) shall not act with him as a creditor usually does; you (plural) may not place interest upon him” (Shemos 22:24). The pasuk is written in singular form, lashon yachid, except for the command, “You may not

place interest upon him.” Midrashic and halachic sources derive from here that anyone who was involved in creating the interest-bearing loan violates the prohibition of “placing interest,” lo sesimun (Shemos Rabbah; Levush, Yoreh Deah 160:2). Thus, a guarantor of such a loan, the notary public, and possibly even the attorney who drafts a document that includes provisions for ribbis all violate the laws of ribbis (Bris Yehudah 1:6). Is there any way to avoid this violation? The obvious way is not to notarize such a document. There is another solution: to redraft the loan document so that it is a heter iska. A heter iska is a halachically approved way of restructuring a loan or debt so that it is an investment rather than a loan. One is permitted to create a heter iska even when we are only trying to find a kosher way of creating a transac-

tion that is very similar to an interestbearing loan (Terumas Hadeshen #302). However, it must meet the requirements of a heter iska. If it does not, it will still be prohibited. AT THIS POINT LET US ADDRESS OUR SECOND QUESTION:

If I go shopping with friends and lend them my credit card, could the chesed I am performing become an aveirah? In true Jewish fashion, I’ll answer this question with another question:

When the purchaser uses the credit card, to whom is the credit card issuer (usually a bank) lending the money? The answer is that they lend the money to the person who is responsible to pay the credit card bill, not to the person who made the purchase. But who will be paying the credit card bill afterward? If indeed the person in whose name the card is issued pays the bill, then only one loan takes place. However, if the purchaser intends to pay the bill, then two loans have taken place: one from the bank to the owner of the card, and a second from the owner of the card to the purchaser. Now what happens if the credit card loan incurs interest charges and the purchaser chooses to pay them? Even if the purchaser pays the bank directly, he is paying interest that the owner of the card (who is the one who borrowed from the bank) is obli-

magine there is a pipeline extending from the heavens into your window. At the upper edge of the pipeline are sacks of diamonds and jewels waiting to be dropped into your home. Unfortunately, the pipeline is clogged. The bounty cannot reach you.

Such is the effect of an Ayin Horah. It clogs the pipeline to Heaven where infinite bounty awaits us. Whether its Shidduchim, Shalom bayis, Parnassa, Hatzlacha, an Ayin Horah steals the brachah that is bound for you.

Getting cleared from an Ayin Horah effectively unclogs the pipeline. It allows the good that is waiting to reach you unbothered. The effects of Ayin Horah are many, too numerous to list. So if you find yourself in any situation where no amount of Hishtadlus gets you the results, it’s worthwhile to check for an Ayin Horah. ENDORSED BY MANY RABBANIM

gated to pay. In other words, the purchaser is paying interest on a debt that the cardholder would otherwise have to pay! This violates ribbis. There are at least three ways to avoid this problem: The easiest is if either the purchaser or the cardholder pay off the debt before it incurs any interest fees. In this instance, there is no interest payment and therefore no violation of ribbis. The second way is by having the cardholder pay the accumulated interest. In this instance, the purchaser who borrowed the card is paying only what he borrowed, and thus there is no violation of ribbis. Of course, the cardholder probably did not have this in mind when he “lent” the purchaser his credit card! A third way would be to create a heter iska for this transaction. A heter iska appropriate for this type of situation is located in Rabbi Yisroel Reisman’s excellent work, The Laws of Ribbis, on pages 126 and 127.

ordinarily do for him. For example, it is prohibited for the borrower to bring a small gift to the lender as a token of thanks for the loan (Mishnah Bava Metzia 75b). The lender may not ask the borrower to do him a favor that he would not have asked him if he had not lent him money (Tosafos Bava Metzia 64b, s.v. Avol). Similarly, it is prohibited for the borrower to thank the lender for the loan (Graz, Hilchos Ribbis #9). It would seem to this author that it is prohibited to give the lender a kibbud because of the loan.

AT THIS POINT, LET US DISCUSS THE THIRD OPENING QUESTION:

Halacha prohibits charging for the use of one’s money even when a loan did not actually take place. Thus, a merchant may not add interest charges to a bill (sent to a Yid) because it is past due. It is permitted, however, to charge for the actual expenses that were accrued since the merchant had to send an additional bill as well as any other collection costs he incurred. There are authorities who permit a one-time late fee, but this is a complicated topic that needs to be discussed with an individual’s rav. If a merchant wants to add interest charges to his bills, he can have a heter iska drafted specifically to cover this situation. In this instance, he would keep a copy of the heter iska document, and include on his statement or contract that all transactions are according to heter iska. He should consult with a rav to know exactly how to word this declaration and how to make this heter iska in an acceptable way. The Chofetz Chaim notes that if someone can lend money without compensation, he should certainly do so and not utilize a heter iska, because this is the mitzvah of performing chesed (Ahavas Chesed 2:15).

If I give someone a kibbud because he lent me money, does this violate the prohibition of ribbis? In general, the laws of ribbis prohibit the borrower from giving the lender anything that he would not

LET US NOW DISCUSS THE L AST OF OUR OPENING QUESTIONS:

May I add late charges to a bill to make sure that my customers pay on time?

LET ME CLOSE with a thought from Rav Hirsch

concerning the reason the Torah prohibits interest. The Torah’s prohibition is to demonstrate that the financial bounty we receive from Hashem is for donating tzedakah and providing loans. The Torah’s goal in banning the use of capital for interest-paying loans is to direct excess funds to chesed and tzedakah. Rabbi Levi Cohen is a highly respected rosh kollel, rav and dayan who has much experience in the halachic ramifications of commercial law. Individuals who would like to discuss issues with him may contact him through the offices of The Boro Park View.

When More Doesn’t Make It Merrier Many times people find themselves in a situation where they wish they had more money. They think, “I need more money,” “I should make more money,” or, “Money would fix this.” But more money isn’t always the answer. If someone is unable to manage what they have, more money often means only more of a mess. When it comes to managing money, we can divide people into two categories. The first type make money very easily — they’re money magnets — but it’s almost like there’s a hole in their pocket. They find it very hard to hold on to their money and put some into savings. Even after earning a lot, they might still find it hard to cover the month. We call this leaking money. It makes no difference if they earn very little and spend a little more than that, or if they earn a lot and spend a little more than that. We’ve seen people who make over $20,000 a month finish every month in a deficit. That’s an example of leaking money — there’s no money map, budget or financial foundation, only more money creating a bigger mess. Then there are people who don’t make money very easily — but they find it easier to save. Perhaps it’s because they work harder for their money, or maybe it’s because they have different priorities, but they don’t spend a lot; they budget carefully. Oftentimes, though, they can’t either cover the month, because they don’t know how to attract money. What causes us to fall into either category? All of us have habits and emotional blockages that may hinder our ability to receive and manage money. Here are some blockages and how to fix them.

78 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

THE BORO PARK VIEW / 79

LIMITING BELIEFS The Problem Limiting beliefs about money can affect both our earning potential and our ability to keep what we earned. If someone has negative views about money, it will not come to them easily, nor will they be able to manage it effectively. These beliefs are cultivated as a person grows up. It can stem from hearing parents voicing these sentiments, what is taught in school, or even conclusions a child drew on their own from negative experiences along the way. Some limiting beliefs are: • The belief that money is wrong, bad or not ruchnius’dig (pas ba’melach sochel…) • The belief that money is scarce (money doesn’t grow on trees!) and that there is never enough • The belief that having money in this world will compromise one’s portion in the World to Come

The Fix Money is not inherently good or evil. It’s simply a tool. Some people use it for good; others fail to do so. Hopefully, you can be one of the people who are responsible around money. We believe that the money we make isn’t ours. Rather, it was entrusted to us by Hashem to manage. Therefore, it is our responsibility to manage it wisely and well, to give maaser, to provide for our family’s needs, and to share what we can. (The money rule should be: Use some, give some, save some and live some.) The thoughts we think, and our beliefs, manifest themselves in our lives. You don’t have to hold onto beliefs that no longer serve you. Remember that Hashem created an abundant universe and gives us “kol tzorki.” Hashem will always give you what you need if you believe He will. Here are some answers to the examples given above: • We know that riches are a blessing because the Torah tells us so. Hashem loves us and He wants us to have the best of everything. • Hashem is infinite and omnipotent, and He can do anything. He most definitely can give us, as well as everyone around us, more than we need to cover our needs. No, money doesn’t grow on trees, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t enough! • Everything in the world can be used for good. Your money can also be used as an investment to do even more good in the world to multiply your merits as opposed to depleting them!

If you’re operating from a limiting hashkafik perspective (that money is wrong), ask your rav or rosh yeshivah to help you find some of the places in the Torah where money is mentioned as a blessing, or in relation to a mitzvah or positive commandment. And count to see how many times it comes up! Adopt a pasuk like that as your new money mindset.

AVO I DA N C E The Problem It’s easier to bumble along than to take control and do something about straightening out one’s finances. Avoidance is exactly what it sounds like. For some people, it might mean not checking their bank accounts, not creating or sticking to a budget, or not knowing exactly how much they make or how much they owe. It never ceases to amaze us that so many people have no idea what their credit card balances look like; their closest guess is sometimes off by tens of thousands of dollars. We’ve also seen a couple of clients who didn’t know what their total assets were — and when we asked for the breakdown, they realized they had almost double than what they thought, which is a huge difference when you’re talking about hundreds of thousands of dollars! Sometimes people avoid taking control of their finances with the excuse of “leaving room for Hashem to make miracles.” But we have to believe that Hashem is great and that if He wants to send us bounty, He can do so whether or not we check our bank account balance daily.

The Fix • Start by creating an inventory of what you have (assets) versus what you owe (debts). • Know your income, track your expenses and budget accordingly. (You can download a helpful spreadsheet with common expense categories from our website www.rushmore.financial.) • Check your bank balance at least once a week to keep track of available funds.

RESENTMENT The Problem Many people feel resentful about parting with their money when they pay their bills or buy something they need. They might be thinking, “I wish I wouldn’t have to do this.” Some people also feel resentful when their richer neighbors or friends throw a lavish simcha or party. They might think, “Let them plan a more modest event and give the rest to tzedakah…” (As if their friends would give it to them!) These feelings of entitlement and unwillingness to part with money paints the entire financial picture in a negative light. In addition, those having trouble parting with money many times also find it

harder to earn money because there’s an imbalance with the natural flow of money coming in and going out.

The Fix Practice this: When paying bills or buying something for yourself, try an attitude of gratitude. Say, “Thank you, Hashem, for giving me the means with which to pay for electricity and have the blessing of light!” Or, “Thank you, Hashem, for giving me the ability to pay for this new coat that will keep me warm throughout the winter!” Doing this helps replace resentment around parting from your money with gratitude for your ability to do so, and this attitude makes life much more pleasant.

TIGHTFISTEDNESS The Problem People who are tightfisted are prone to hoarding money for a rainy day. They are almost too cautious around money, often scared to spend, and will never spend on anything they can do on their own, even if it’ll save them time and hassle. They find it hard to give tzedakah, because they operate out of a “lack” mentality and a “there’s never enough” belief system. Tightfisted people value security above convenience or pleasure. They penny-pinch so as not to run out of funds. They will seldom “spend money to make money,” because they believe it’s not worth the risk; to them it’s just easier to save what they have than to make more.

The Fix Having some savings and an emergency fund is great. But what’s money if you don’t enjoy it? Money is meant to be used, spent and to change hands. Start by telling yourself, “Hashem always gives me what I need. I always have what I need at exactly the right time.” If you find yourself nervous about parting with your money, thinking, “Maybe it’s not important enough... Maybe I’ll need the funds for something else,” realize that we live in an infinite reality; there is always more where that came from. Regarding giving tzedakah, the Torah gives us great advice: It’s better to give $1 to a hundred people than $100 to one person. That’s because the more we give, the more we train our souls to be generous — and the more we internalize the message that there’s always more where the money came from. Here’s a mantra that can help you if you’re tightfisted and generally anxious about not having enough: “I live in an infinite universe. Hashem gives me everything I need.”

G U I LT A N D S H A M E The Problem If you have guilt or shame around money, it may manifest itself in your feeling undeserving or unworthy. Or, you may feel guilty for being better off financially than friends and family. People who are this way aren’t necessarily tightfisted in all areas; they may have no issue with spending money on their family, friends and even strangers, but they find it hard to spend it on themselves. Do you find yourself picking up something you really wanted, and then putting it back on the shelf — and doing this often? The rationalization is either that you “don’t really need it” (don’t confuse this with overspending on things you really don’t need — here we’re referring to shopping with money that is budgeted in exclusively for you, but you have a problem using

82 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / January 8, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

it as such) or that you’d rather save up for something bigger for yourself — like a sheitel or vacation — but somehow the money always ends up being used for other people before you get there. Feeling guilt and shame keeps you from receiving money (refer to “Not Receiving” section), and it also keeps you from using money for necessities for yourself.

geously flamboyant that will create waves. But using your money in a tznius’dig fashion (after giving and sharing) is what money is meant for. It will make you a happier, healthier person, and the bonus will be that you’ll get better at making money, too! Practice telling yourself, “I am worthy and deserving of using the money that Hashem has given me.”

The Fix

Note (and important disclaimer!):

When you focus on using some money for yourself, within your budget and within your means, you are affirming to yourself that you matter. You are worthy and deserving. Yes, of course you should help family and friends who are struggling. And no, if you live in a kollel community, you shouldn’t be driving or doing something outra-

Most people suffer from the opposite problem — overspending (see next topic). Even if you’ve been feeling deprived, spending more than you have at any given time is a bad idea. This section is not addressed to people who don’t have enough cash — it’s for those who don’t allow themselves to spend on themselves what they can afford.

OVERGIVING

The Problem

The Problem

You’ll know you’re out of control in this area if you find yourself making impulsive purchases or maxing out your credit cards often. Retail therapy has become a “thing.” Some of us shop for fun, others to calm our nerves. In extreme cases, some may have bags of unused purchases lying around in their closets, yet still shop for more.

Giving tzedakah is a huge part of our lives, and perhaps even a main purpose of our money. But you know it’s become an issue when your mortgage and tuition are late, yet you keep giving large donations and signing up for automatic payments to every organization that sends a mailing to you.

The Fix

The Fix Commit to buying only what you really need or want, as opposed to everything you see. Keep a “to buy” list as well as a “needs” list. Before you buy something, ask yourself, “In what way will this improve or add value to my life? Budgeting is super important here. Know how much money you have to spend on different categories, and don’t spend more than you make!

The Torah, in its wisdom, tells us to set aside maaser, and teaches us the concept of sharing 10% of our income — or, for those who are in a position to give more, 20% — with those who are needier than us. Before you donate more than that, make sure that all of your bills are covered, that you don’t owe anyone money, and that your own family is provided for.

NO BOUNDARIES The Problem If you have a problem setting boundaries in general, it’ll become an issue around money, too. Do you find yourself always being the one to pay when you go out with friends? Perhaps you offered once or twice, and then everyone came to expect it of you... Are you the one always driving your friends around, and then they all let you pay for the gas and tolls without chipping in?

The Fix Setting boundaries protects yourself as well as your wallet and makes gifting your friends fun again — because you do it when you want to, not because you feel pressured to. Clear guidelines for yourself as well as clear communication with your friends and family are key to fixing this issue. Decide what you want to give and when, and then communicate it clearly. For example: “I’m happy to drive everyone to the event if we split the gas and tolls.” Or, “I’ll pay for everyone’s drinks, but let’s each pick up our tab for the food.”

84 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / January 8, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

NOT RECEIVING The Problem People who have trouble receiving money literally push money away — both metaphysically (money will not come to them as easily because they are mentally or emotionally not ready for it) and physically. Were you ever tipped or gifted (money or something else!), and instead of accepting graciously, said, “No need! Please, no, you don’t have to!” Do you find people having to literally push money into your pockets after you babysat or picked something up from the grocery for them… because you wouldn’t take it otherwise? Do you throw gifts or compliments back into people’s faces? If you own a business, do you undervalue your worth by charging less than market value, even when you’re a competent professional? Or do you find yourself offering discounts before your clients even ask? Do you find it hard to state your service fee without flinching? If you are doing any of these, you are blocking the flow of money coming to you, simply by not opening yourself up to receiving it.

This can be because of underlying issues with your own self-worth (I don’t deserve it! Who am I to charge? Who will pay little old me?), because of guilt or shame around money (based on limiting beliefs), or, as strange as it sounds, fear of success.

The Fix Work on acknowledging your own inherent worth. If you woke up this morning, that’s Hashem’s vote of confidence in you — it means He decided that you have something to give this world. Practice accepting gifts, compliments and money graciously. Simply say thank you or, “Wow, that’s an honor.” Let yourself feel the warmth of their gesture or of your own accomplishment flowing through you. Keep a wish list or a spending list and plan on what you’ll do if you get some unexpected money. Knowing what you want to do with that money will eventually remove the fear of success, which is most usually a fear of the unknown, fear of losing what you made, or a fear of change.

THE BOT TOM LINE These thinking patterns and habits keep many of us from managing our money properly and in a way that works well for us. Once we do the inner work to resolve them, making — and keeping — money should become easier. The trick is to always remember to create and stick to a budget. This is your financial foundation; it is the money map that tell your dollars where to go before you wonder where they went. Keep your mind open to resolving whatever mental and emotional blockages come up again. And daven, daven, daven — that really is the bottom line!

Y

Efraim’s Story:

ou know the kind of people whom stories happen to? That’s not me. I’m your regular hardworking guy, the kind who just does his thing without making too much trouble or noise. It’s not that I don’t enjoy good times or interesting experiences — I do. But between the myriad responsibilities of daily life, there really isn’t much room for fanfare. It began innocently enough. A dear friend of mine, whom I’ll call Naftali, celebrated the engagement of his oldest daughter. Although I’m younger than Naftali and my oldest is only twelve

88 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / January 8, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

years old, Naftali and I go back years, so his simcha was mine. Maybe it’s because I know Naftali well, or maybe it’s because I’m a more intuitive kind of guy, but from the start I realized something wasn’t right. Instead of an elated father-in-law-to-be, Naftali appeared more and more washed out as the engagement period proceeded. With time, I completely stopped asking him about the wedding preparations, since every time I did, a flash of pain or a grimace would cross over his face. Then, just as suddenly as the look would appear, it would be gone, and Naftali would be back to his usual jovial self. Finally, the night of the chasunah arrived. There was traffic on the way home from work, and by the time my wife finished getting the kids into bed, it had gotten rather late. We arrived at the wedding in the knick of time, just as the music for the chuppah began to play. I sat back and felt my eyes tear as I watched Naftali lead his young son-inlaw down the aisle. I davened that their mazel should be as beautiful as this special night, and in the back of my mind, I hoped that the worry I had seen on Naftali was nothing more than regular pre-wedding nerves. Soon the chuppah was over, and the chassan and kallah were serenaded off, surrounded by a joyous entourage of family and friends. I pushed my way through the crowds to reach Naftali, but much as I tried, I couldn’t. Determined, I made my way over to where the family would typically be taking pictures at this time, but the room was empty. Confused, I headed to the dinner hall; perhaps Naftali was there. But still, no Naftali. I felt my concern grow. I sat down at the nearest table, and waited. The dinner hall was slowly filling with guests, all of them ambling around, waiting to begin the meal. But the tables were bare of food, without a waiter in sight. I waited five minutes. And then another. And then it hit me. Like a man possessed, I raced to the kitchen and demanded to see the caterer. One look at his face explained it all.

“No payment, no food,” he boomed, hands up in the air. I tried reasoning with him, but it was to no avail. The more I pleaded, the more agitated he got. “I’ve seen this before!” he shouted. “It’s the same story every night. They say they’ll pay at the event. Well, I’m no fool. Until the check is in my hand, not one crumb leaves this kitchen.” With that, he slapped his hands onto the metal counter and looked up stonily, daring me to disagree. My head was pounding as a million thoughts raced through my mind. I looked at the serving trays, loaded with food, with nowhere to go. I thought of the guests, the mechutanim, and the creases on Naftali’s face that seemed to deepen every time we met. Whatever trouble he was in, Naftali didn’t deserve this humiliation. I knew what I had to do, and so I did. Hands trembling, I reached into my pocket, but in my heart, I was calm. The total came out to $10,000. Credit card in hand, the caterer gave his orders and the food went out. From that point on, things moved quickly. Moments later, the meal began, the guests none the wiser. Naftali resurfaced just before the musicians were to begin the first dance. I approached him, not meeting his eyes so he should not even suspect what had happened, and he enveloped me in a warm hug as I wished him mazel tov. Arm in arm with my friend, my feet took off as our little circle began to spin. The spirited dancing increased in pace, while inside, I felt a growing nausea that I knew had little to do with any physical movement; $10,000 was no laughing matter. Determined, I pushed the thoughts of my bank account — and my frequent overdraft, and my son’s upcoming bar mitzvah — far from my mind. I felt numb, but my head was clear. I had done what was needed, and my money had landed only where it had been destined to be. Where the funds would come from, only Hashem knew. For now, it was time to focus on the dance.

Whatever trouble he was in, Naftali didn’t deserve this humiliation.

I

Meir’s Story:

have nothing against chazzanus, but three hours into davening with Musaf nowhere on the foreseeable agenda was enough to drive a guy like me over the edge. I was sitting near the front of the shul with Yaakov, my old friend from my yeshivah days. We had both made it to LA for Shabbos in honor of a friend of ours who was celebrating his son’s bar mitzvah. And what a bar mitzvah it was! We had been wined and dined fully in style since our arrival in LA on Thursday night, and there we were Shabbos morning, with no sign of the luxury letting up. Davening had been one long procession of assorted singers, family members of the bar mitzvah boy, and, of course, the boy himself. At that point, I was plainly famished. I must have kvetched just a bit too loudly, since Yaakov took one hard look at me and laughed. “You think this is bad? They haven’t even started the speeches yet! We have at least a few hours before Musaf!” I snorted. “Come on, not hours!” I protested. “Well, no,” said Yaakov, “but trust me, my friend, you’ve got a long way to go.” Exaggeration aside, I knew Yaakov had a point. I had seen enough to realize that the seudah was a fairly far-off dream. “You know what, Yaakov,” I said, leaning over so he could clearly hear, “I’d pay the chazzan ten thousand dollars if he’d start Musaf right now.” “Right now?” said Yaakov with a wink. I opened my mouth to respond, but instead I was cut off... “Yisgadal, v’yiskadash!” the baal tefillah intoned. My jaw dropped as the sounds of Musaf began to waft through the room, and then ground to a halt as the baal tefillah was shushed and a speaker approached the podium. It was only later, at the grandiose post-davening kiddush, that we were able to put the pieces together. Mr. Markowitz, a member of the shul,

had a visiting brother-in-law who for some reason wasn’t aware of the bar mitzvah proceedings. The rav had asked him to take to the amud for Musaf, and oblivious to the scheduled events, he began to daven just as the speeches were set to begin. He was stopped in time, however, and Musaf took place as late as predicted. After Shabbos, Yaakov and I met up again at the grand melaveh malkah affair. “Hey, so did you give the guy the cash?” Yaakov asked, slapping me on the back. We both broke out laughing, and then Yaakov sombered. “You really might owe him the money,” he said. “You promised, and I heard it, and he started davening just when you said he should. Better go track him down before he leaves LA,” Yaakov said. I made a face. Could it really be? I had clearly offered the money in jest. And yet… A few hours later, I was at the Markowitz’s door. I asked for Mr. Markowitz’s brother in-law — the baal tefillah — and he appeared, somewhat bewildered. “Well, I don’t know how to say this,” I stammered, suddenly shy, “but this is yours.” I held out the check and placed it in his hand. The baal tefillah looked at me strangely, then peered at the check and gasped. “How did you know?” he whispered, clearly shaken. It took him some time to calm down, but when he did, he shared with me his story. “You see, my name is Efraim...”

“I’d pay the chazzan ten thousand dollars if he’d start Musaf right now.”

Life at a Glance MENACHEM, age 24: works in sales LEAH, age 23: runs her own business sewing custom gowns and dresses ARON, age 3.5 MIRIAM, 18 months Both kids are in daycare. In the past year, Leah has had to cut down on work because Miriam has been sick a lot. Menachem’s job isn’t bringing in enough to cover, and their debts are catching up with them. Real numbers and real facts. Identifying details have been changed to protect privacy.

Leah: It is a cold and rainy day in October when it all finally caves in. Our financial life is a house of cards built on no foundation, and whatever’s left of the flimsy, haphazardly built structure is now tumbling down all around us into the dirty puddles. Rent is late — by a full month. All these months we had bumbled along somehow, charging our own credit cards to get cash to pay the landlord, and just trying to get by. But last month we were two weeks behind, and now we are four. Menachem comes in looking small. He had run into our landlord outside. “He said he needs his money now. They can’t wait another day. They hinted that maybe we should move.” Menachem looks shaken. He tries to hide his hurt with anger, but it’s a thin and flimsy mask for his fear. He wonders out loud why they can’t be more understanding, but deep down we both know that they’re right. We all know we have no plan. The kids are cranky; maybe they’re picking up on the tension. Or they just might be hungry. The fridge is empty, and I’m making eggs for supper again. I hate going to the grocery because I never have enough money, and I always have to put stuff back, blushing because I’m holding up a line of impatient people. I stand there, wracking my brains to see what I can do without — bread or cheese? — and stare at the screen until the number goes down to what I have. I can’t do this anymore. Menachem does the grocery shopping now. He’s at the stage where he takes ten

Coaches’ Take Chaim: Unfortunately, this is not just your story, Menachem and Leah. You are not alone in this. A staggering number of people struggle to make ends meet and can’t cover their daily expenses.

Eli: Credit cards might give you momentary reprieve when you’re checking out of the grocery and you’re broke. But it’ll only come back to bite you as you’ll be paying for your past instead of your future — and with added interest to boot!

credit cards with him and asks the cashier to try this one first, see if it works. I try not to go along, but if I ever

do, I avoid the registers when he’s checking out. It’s just

too embarrassing. We’re maxed out, and Menachem wants to take a cash advance on my credit card, since they won’t let him do it on his anymore. I disagree

because the interest on the cash advance is through the roof, and we can only take

one out on my card. Besides, it’ll only help push us through one week, in any case, leaving us in an even deeper hole. And what’ll happen next week? I say, whatever we’ll end up doing, let’s figure it out now. It’s time to bite the bullet and try to make some sense out of all this. Menachem is mad and I feel sick. I’m not sure I’m doing the right thing. Do I even have the right to speak up? Now, not only is there no money, but our relationship is starting to suffer, too.

Eli: Setting boundaries is important in every relationship. If you’re not comfortable with something — emotionally, physically, spiritually — it is up to you to protect yourself and say, “I can’t do that.” For many people, this is very hard to do in general, especially if it will inconvenience others. It can be scary, but nobody else can do it for you, so you’ve got to step up to the plate or you’ll get stepped on. Here, Menachem has maxed out all the cards in his name and wants to take a cash advance on Leah’s. Leah understands this will not be a long-term fix, and she is uncomfortable allowing the situation to spiral even more out of control. Good for her for setting a boundary and insisting that things need to change.

Chaim: Rough finances cause headache and heartache and are the numberone cause of shalom bayis issues.

Menachem: Debt is so tight and so very heavy. The ol haparnassah seems to weigh a little more each day. The load isn’t physical, yet it seems like it is. I can feel it knotting up my back. My shoulders are sagging, and they feel permanently hunched under the crushing weight.

Breathing has become a struggle through the tightness in my chest. Money seems to fly out before it even comes in. My wife doesn’t know this, but we’re 90 days late on our car payment of $199. Of $199! It’s not as if we leased an Audi or anything. We took the cheapest car on the market! And even that I can’t swing. Every day I go to my office and do what I feel is pretend work. I’m unmotivated. Unclear. Unconfident. I work the phones and dial a hundred prospects, hoping someone will buy. I hope nobody notices the fear and shakiness that sits in a lump in my throat, like I’m choking on a golf ball. I work as a salesman on commission only. It’s hard for me to throw myself into my job when I’m so weighed down by debt, but that only causes the paychecks to keep shrinking. It’s a vicious cycle. Every day I come back home, exhausted after a long day of worrying. I hate to see my wife so pinched and tired. All I want to do is provide for my family. I want to support them like they deserve. Is that too much to want?! I can’t face myself in the mirror; I feel like a failure. Am I going to spend my whole life chasing money like a cat chasing its tail? Is that the way it’s supposed to be? Somehow, I didn’t think being a husband and father would be this way. To be continued...

94 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / January 8, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

Chaim: Menachem, your story describes the sheer hopelessness and despair everyone feels in the absence of a working financial plan. It is very true and real. Debt is a crushing weight.

Eli: It feels horrible to go to work to pay for food you already ate up and items you already used, and maybe even already disposed of. People feel motivated to work when their money pays for their future hopes and dreams, not their past.

Chaim Tauber

Eli Shimon

Having grown up in a home where there was no financial structure and never enough money, Chaim promised himself that his financial life would be different. And it was! He learned that he has a natural knack for balancing the books and building a sound financial foundation to support his family. Family and friends picked up on this and asked for his help in organizing their financial lives, and when he found himself working with friends of friends, he took his formal training to become a certified financial coach.

Eli learned financial responsibility the hard way, after he found himself owing over $30,000 in credit card debt. He turned to books and coaching on financial advice, made a plan, stuck to it, and paid it all off in 16 months. Having personally experienced the pain, terror and despair of crushing debt, Eli is super passionate about educating the community. He certified as a financial coach and is committed to helping his clients get to a place of financial and personal freedom.

Did You Know? In 2013, there were over 1.63 billion credit cards in circulation throughout the world, which, laid end to end, would circle the globe three and a half times! The average American household receives six credit card offers every month. Lowering your credit card interest rate can usually be as simple as picking up a phone. Telling your provider that you may go elsewhere unless they cut a deal often does the trick. The Black Centurion card by Amex has a $2,500 annual fee and minimum spending requirement of $250,000 per year. No, that’s not cardholder’s required income; it’s the spending total.

1946: John Biggins, a Brooklyn banker, launches the first Charg-It Card. Purchases made using a Charg-It card are forwarded to Biggin’s bank, the Flatbush National Bank of Brooklyn, by the store owner; the bank, serving as the middleman, reimburses the store and later collects payment from the customers. This “closed-loop” system remains the model of credit card processing today.

1950: The Diners Club Card, inspired by a customer named Frank McNamara when he forgot his wallet at a business dinner, is issued.

The American Express card is born.

McNamara comes up with the idea of issuing “credit” cards to customers at the eatery, to be used as a record of payment, sort of like gift cards used today. The cards allow customers at the restaurant to make purchases without cash. Balances are paid to the owner by McNamara, the card issuer, at a later time. McNamara, in turn, collects payment from the cardholder.

AmEx was founded in 1850 as a competitor to the USPS, introducing money orders in 1882 and traveler’s checks in 1891. They did consider presenting a travel charge card in 1946, but the Diners Club beat them to it.

Considered the first credit card with widespread use, the Diners Club Card is mainly used for travel and entertainment. Although the card bill has to be paid in full at the end of the month, purchases are made on credit. By 1951, Diners Club has 20,000 cardholders!

Credit Card Machines Imprinter Manufactured shortly after AmEx introduced the plastic credit card, this machine enabled an imprint of the card to be produced on carbon paper slips to be used by the bank, merchant and customer as proof of the transaction. Today, there are some stores who still utilize imprinters to save card details in the event of power or connection outages.

Electronic Terminal The magnetic stripe, which contains information such as the cardholder’s name and authorization codes, was added to payment cards in 1970. In 1973, the first electronic terminal system was created to read these stripes in order to process

secure transactions, control customer balances, and approve or decline transactions at the point of payment. At the conclusion of every transaction, a signed receipt remained a requirement.

Wireless Terminal As early as 1997, portable machines, with the ability to accept payments on the go, were soon available for use wherever there was a compatible connection, as opposed to the stationary machines that function only while connected to a phone or Internet line.

Chip Cards Chip cards, also called EMV and Smart Cards, were invented by French Roland Moreno. With

the chip’s significantly greater security and the ability to store a lot more information than the magnetic stripe system, it became a required feature in the U.S. in 2015.

Contactless Payment NFC (near field communication) allows for information within a radius of 10 centimeters to be transmitted to a device. Using this technology, credit card data can now be sent to the payment terminal by simply tapping the machine with the credit card. Visa and MasterCard require all credit card terminals to accept contactless payments from early 2020, and all new models already support NFC functionality, so go ahead and tap to pay!

1959:

1966:

1967:

AmEx produces the first plastic card, replacing the cardboard and celluloid used until this point. They expand to issue cards across other countries, and by 1964, American Express cards are being used by 85,000 merchants in the U.S. and beyond.

Bank of America issues the nation’s first licenced general-purpose credit card. A decade later, in 1976, their card brand is renamed Visa, in light of its growing international existence. Bank of America was originally founded in California, and that is what inspired the Visa logo, which represents the blue of the sky and the gold of the hills in California.

At the same time, a group of California banks form the ITC (Interbank Card Association) and issue MasterCard, the second major bank card in America.

At this point, major banks launch their own consumer cards. This time they are true credit cards; bills do not have to be settled every month. Like credit cards today, nominal fees are incurred for cardholders with a monthly balance carried forward.

Visa and MasterCard are direct competitors, both of which are run by organizations whose board members mainly consist of high-level executives from their member (issuing) banks.

1985: Discover Cards are introduced by Sears. It later merges with Morgan Stanley.

WORD LADDER Look at the word at the bottom of the ladder and then try to figure out what the next word can be. In each rung of the ladder, only change one letter of the previous word. Keep in mind that although one letter is different in each word, the positions of the letters do not change. Hint: If you get stuck, remember that the game, like a ladder, can be completed in either direction.
