A CHESED A DAY

(Re: All Roads Lead to Chesed, Issue 191)

After reading last week’s issue on chesed, all I can say is, Mi k’amcha Yisroel! Where else would you find a nation so intent on making their brothers’ lives easier in every way, shape and form!

To me, what was especially heartwarming about this issue was the fact that I got to read both about the tzaddikim disguised as regular people who literally go out of their way to transport their brethren — and then about the experiences of a woman on the receiving end.

With the abundance of gemachim and organizations out there to provide help of every kind, it’s sometimes easy to forget about the individuals who make all this happen, and the individuals whose burdens get so significantly eased because of the kindness of their brothers. This issue brought it all into focus again.

With much appreciation for your weekly doses of inspiration, A Reader In Awe

KNOW WHERE IT GOES

(Re: A Light Unto the Nations, Your Say, Issue 191)

Last week, someone wrote that they were at a national chain department store, and at checkout were asked to donate to a charity. They did, and the cashier commented that she was the first religious Jew ever to do so.

I just want to point out that, baruch Hashem, as individuals and as a community, we give tremendous amounts of tzedakah. If you would like to support a non-Jewish charity as well, be careful about whom you choose to donate to. Some “charities” are actually funding non-

Thank you for the DIY painting series. My granddaughter and I enjoyed following your directions. This is my granddaughter’s results!

BAD TIMING

(Re: A Wake-Up Call, Issue 188)

I’m one of your many fans who anticipate Wednesdays, eager for the new edition of The Boro Park View. I was excited to see your contest on Birchas Hashachar since I personally wanted to work on that for a while. I even bought a Birchas Hashachar card to hang on my fridge. But… wrong timing. With the kids home between school and day camp, I missed it too often.

Next time a contest is launched for busy mothers, please take into account our calendars and schedules! I would have loved to participate had the timing worked out better.

NOW OR NEVER

(Re: A Wake-Up Call, Issue 188)

I’m a little embarrassed to publicly admit that it took a magazine contest to get me serious about saying Birchas Hashachar in the morning. But as a mother of a few small children (and a few big ones), baruch Hashem, I haven’t been as consistent about it as I would have liked. Since this contest launched, however, I’ve been trying to be more consistent about it.

This is what I found: I have to daven before my kids get up. Once they get up, there isn’t a minute to breathe. I’ve started waking up at six so I can just about get dressed, have a quick coffee, and say brachos. Usually it works; sometimes it doesn’t — but if I don’t manage to daven before they get up, I very rarely find the time at all.

Thanks for the inspiration!

PARSHAS MATOS-MASEI

No Questions Asked

We see that the Torah ascribes much chashivus to Bnei Yisroel’s travels in the Midbar, describing each of the 42 journeys at length. Year after year, we read through the pesukim . What message do we learn from these details?

THE MESIRUS NEFESH of the Klausenberger Rebbe, zt”l, during the Holocaust period is indescribable. He was careful to perform mitzvos to the best of his ability even under impossible circumstances. He lost his wife and eleven children, yet remained rock solid in his emunah and bitachon in Hakadosh Baruch Hu. He never questioned, never faltered.

The Rebbe not only strengthened himself; he was mechazek countless other Yidden. In the camps, Gehinnom on this world, the Rebbe infused emunah into the hearts of those around him. Many later testified that had they not been near the Rebbe during those challenging times, they would not have been able to remain faithful to Hashem.

Many years after the war, after establishing Kiryas Sanz in Netanya, the Rebbe addressed his talmidim and chassidim. He said that in all of his years in the camps, he never cried.

“Why should I cry?” the Rebbe asked in rhetorical wonder. “If this is what Hakadosh Boruch Hu wants for me, it is good, and there is no reason for me to cry.

“But once, I did cry,” the Rebbe disclosed.

It happened one Friday night, when the time came for the Shabbos seudah. There was no bread for Hamotzi, and the Rebbe was beside himself. All he wanted was a small piece of Hamotzi to wash on.

“That’s when I burst into tears. I was distraught that Hakadosh Boruch Hu did not give me the ability to perform His will.”

The Rebbe continued to describe the great miracle that happened. “Just then, a person came by and gave me some bread and jam. And that’s how I was able to be mekayem the mitzvah of seudas Shabbos.”

This seemingly minor incident is beyond human compre-

Did You Know?

hension. The only time the Rebbe cried during that dark and frightening period was when he felt he was being prevented from completing a mitzvah for Hashem! He completely submitted his will to the will of Hakadosh Boruch Hu. It was clear that his only desire was what Hashem desired.

We can learn this lesson from the Yidden in the Midbar.

The Ramban explains:

At times, the Ananei Hakavod would linger above the Mishkan for many days. Even if the encampment in this place was not very comfortable, and Bnei Yisroel would prefer to travel further to find an oasis or better place, they would remain put. They followed ratzon Hashem

Other times, Bnei Yisroel would still be exhausted from traveling, having just about settled in a new place, when the Cloud would move on, and they would get up to follow it. Again, they deferred to ratzon Hashem.

As the pasuk says, “Al pi Hashem yachanu, v’al pi Hashem yisa’u — At Hashem’s bidding they would camp, and at Hashem’s bidding they would travel” (Bamidbar 9:23).

Bnei Yisroel asked no questions. They followed Hakadosh Baruch Hu, making His will their own.

This unconditional subservience earned us Hashem’s praise, as we see with the famous words in the Navi: “Koh amar Hashem, zacharti lach chesed ne’urayich… lechtech acharai bamidbar b’eretz lo zeruah — So said Hashem, I remember the loving kindness of your youth… your following Me in the Midbar, in a land not sown” (Yirmiyahu 2:2).

Hashem promises to remember forever how Bnei Yisroel followed His ratzon without any calculations or questions.

The 42 sojourns in the Midbar hint at the challenges of our long journey in Galus. In fact, the first words of the parsha, “ V’eileh masei Bnei Yisroel,” contain an acronym to the four galuyos — Edom, Madai, Bavel and Yavan.

The Shelah Hakadosh writes that just like the generation of the Midbar, every Yid experiences his own travails, his personal 42 journeys in life. Our tafkid is to go through the process with the clear recognition that everything comes from Hashem, and to follow His will throughout. No questions asked.

Awareness
The Makdim
Event

Makdim was founded a year ago to bring health awareness to the community. Askanim saw many tragic cases of people being diagnosed with latestage illnesses when early detection could have made a huge difference to their prognosis. This led to the founding of Makdim – an awareness and educational effort, bringing the importance of preventative screening and early detection to the attention of the community.

Being Proactive Saves Lives

Makdim’s winter campaign encouraging people to get colonoscopies saw an unprecedented uptick in early screenings which resulted in dozens of lives being saved.

“Colon cancer is the third most common cancer and the second-highest killer for men in the USA. Screening is integral because detecting it early can save a life,” says Dr. Danny Sherwinter, Chief of Surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital.

During a colonoscopy, doctors screen for polyps, which when left to grow, can often turn cancerous. By removing the polyps during the procedure, cancer can be prevented easily.

In addition to raising awareness about the im-

portance of early detection, Makdim set up an office with staff dedicated to easing the process of getting this simple, albeit lifesaving procedure. They schedule your appointment and do the legwork for you. All you have to do is show up to your screening.

Since its inception one year ago, Makdim has facilitated hundreds of colonoscopies, dozens of which resulted in pre-cancerous growths being removed – saving many lives.

An Event Vital To Your Health

Now, Makdim is seeking to expand its efforts with its upcoming Health Awareness Event on July 18, open to all members of the community and free of charge.

Aimed at raising awareness about the importance of taking care of one’s health, the event will include an educational panel featuring renowned medical professionals and staff ready to assist in scheduling preventative care appointments.

Take advantage of an event that will educate you about the most important thing in your life – your health.

63 The Boro Park View

Age Doesn ’ t Discriminate

Chaim Fleischer, one of Makdim’s founding members, says every person over the age of 30 should schedule annual physicals with a primary care physician who knows his family history.

“People are so busy with their dayto-day responsibilities, they forget to take care of themselves. The results of our colonoscopy campaign proved that we need a push to take more initiative about our health. People need to understand that by the time a health issue is detected, it is often too late.”

By bringing the topic to the forefront, Makdim hopes people will be more proactive about their health.

“We want to create educated consumers. When people go to the doctor for their yearly physicals, they should know what to ask. Depending on age, gender, and family history, they should be getting regular exams on blood pressure, cholesterol, sugars, prostate, heart rate, and more.”

Take Your Health Into Your Hands

First, it’s a random shoulder ache. Next, it’s trouble with your digestion. Then it’s a bout of crippling back pain. And chronic fatigue. And then…

It’s natural that as you age, your body goes through changes, especially after 40. People in their forties should spend time educating themselves about major health risks and start making necessary lifestyle changes.

Torrential Rains Cause Catastrophic Closures, Snarling Traffic for Catskills Commuters

The usual weekend congestion facing drivers returning home from the Catskills became a nightmare this past Sunday, as torrential downpours closed roadways, washed out roads, submerged cars and left hikers and travelers fearing for their lives.

The heavy rains in the forecast had motorists expecting to have their wipers working overtime as they drove back from a weekend upstate or camp visiting day. Instead, they found themselves facing impassable roads and raging floodwaters, with the New York State Police reporting that they were assisting dozens of stranded motorists and dealing with cars that had been abandoned on the flooded roadways.

The Palisades Interstate Parkway was closed in both directions north of Exit 14 to the Long Mountain Traffic Circle because of heavy flooding, while chunks of Route 6 in the area were washed out by floodwaters. In Monsey, Wesley Chapel Road was closed between Spook Rock Road and Route 202, while Route 9W was closed in Stony Point from Tompkins Cove to Bear Mountain. Yeshiva World News reported that vehicles in West Post and Stony Point were completely submerged, with one state trooper forced to abandon his vehicle due to high waters, according to Hamodia.

Chaverim of Rockland was called in by Rockland EMS to rescue hikers who found themselves trapped on Bear Mountain. Volunteers headed to the scene split up after being contacted by five families who were trapped by floodwaters on Seven Lakes Drive, with additional units brought in to handle the many requests for assistance.

Although multiple agencies were called to the area, most were unable to provide assistance because of the depth of the flooding. Chaverim of Rockland utilized a new, specialized high-water rescue vehicle to bring those stranded to safety.

Hundreds of flights in and out of the New York area were canceled because of the weather, and one woman was killed by floodwaters in Highland Falls, reported ABC News. As of Sunday night, several others were unaccounted for and feared dead.

“Downed wires, major flooding — it looks like the Colorado River running through here,” said Orange County Executive Steve Neuhaus.

Meteorologist Craig Ceecee described the devastating weather as “a once-in-a-thousand-year rainfall event,” saying that up to eight inches of rain fell in six hours in the Lower Hudson Valley, with the worst downpours occurring from Peekskill to Woodbury.

Popular Candy Recalled After Choking Incident

A Lakewood boy is lucky to be alive after choking on a novelty item whose lickable rollerball releases a sour liquid candy.

Lakewood Alerts reported that the seven-year-old’s parents called Hatzolah when he accidentally swallowed the white plastic rollerball that was part of the candy’s plastic packaging. Attempts by paramedics to dislodge the rollerball were unsuccessful, leaving them with no choice but to push the ball further down the boy’s throat in order to clear his airway.

The boy, identified only as Dovid Aryeh ben Bracha, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where a CAT scan showed the rollerball had made its way into his lungs. Doctors performed emergency surgery to remove the ball, leaving the seven year old in stable but critical condition and breathing with the help of a ventilator.

A massive campaign launched by the boy’s family resulted in the manufacturer recalling the candy. Stores were instructed by the manufacturer to remove the item from their shelves, with a full refund to be provided.

Store Owners Sound Off on Scooters

They may be a favorite form of transportation for kids, but they have become a major headache for Boro Park stores, and even some of their customers.

BoroPark24 reported that multiple store managers are speaking out against scooters, which are often left on the floor by their owners, creating dangers that have caused injuries and sparked lawsuits.

“Kids are coming constantly into the store with their scooters and bikes, which they park at the front of the store,” said Moshe Landau, owner of Center Fresh Supermarket on 13th Avenue and 45th Street.

Landau said that scooters and bikes left outside his store often tip over, tripping unsuspecting customers who don’t notice them as they pass by. Center Fresh has already been hit with two scooter-related lawsuits.

“One customer was seriously injured after tripping on a small scooter on the floor,” said Landau. “The dangers of scooters lying around are very serious and something that needs more awareness in the community.”

Yossi Friedman, manager of Super 13 Supermarket on 13th Avenue and 52nd Street, said that he sees people falling over scooters left on the ground on a daily basis.

“I keep removing them, but both kids and adults should know that leaving the scooters lying around creates a very big danger to other people,” said Friedman.

Scooters aren’t the only thing that can pose a danger to shoppers. One elderly Super 13 shopper needed hip surgery after stumbling unexpectedly on a baby carriage that was sticking out in front of the store.

“While tripping on an object for people of any age can be dangerous and painful, for elderly people, bad falls can require surgery and can mark the end of their healthy lives,” noted Rubinstein.

A Segway was to blame for another supermarket injury, when a child rode over an elderly shopper’s foot inside the store. A boy riding an electric scooter created significant problems while cruising the aisles Yidel’s Supermarket on 12th Avenue and 49th Street at unsafe speeds. He left behind a mess of broken glass and liquid when his scooter’s handle caught on bottled items including soy sauce and vinegar.

Having seen kids and adults tripping on scooters left at the entrance of Kosher Depot on 12th Avenue and 42nd Street, store manager Meyer has a simple message for riders.

“Leave the scooters outside,” said Meyer, adding, “Leave them outside and lock them up, but don’t bring them inside.”

Hackers Target SNAP Cards, Leaving Beneficiaries in the Lurch

Beneficiaries of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program are being advised to change their PIN numbers after a rash of fraudulent activity was reported in recent weeks.

BoroPark24 reported that hackers have accessed SNAP accounts and stolen the benefits. Rabbi Hersh Horowitz, executive director of the Community Outreach Center of Rockland, said that the problem appears to be affecting individuals who have their SNAP card information saved to their local stores’ computer systems.

“There seems to be a ring of thieves targeting our groceries and possibly accessing the information through store workers who take the card information and spend it at different locations,” said Rabbi Horowitz.

Those who receive SNAP benefits are advised to have their account information deleted from any in-store computer systems, to monitor their account balances, and to change the PIN they use to access their accounts, which can be done online at www.connectebt.com or by calling 888-328-6399. Clients who notice suspicious activity on their accounts or who have lost their benefits to scammers are urged to file a report with their local police departments as soon as possible.

Boro Park residents can apply for SNAP benefits through the Boro Park Jewish Community Council at 718-972-6600.

Would-Be Travelers on Edge as Passport Application Process Remains Backed Up Post-COVID

Epic passport delays have become the new status quo in the United States, with the Department of State finding itself unable to keep up with a tidal wave of applications, leaving potential travelers in the lurch.

The Associated Press reported that following the pandemic-induced lull in travel, the demand for passports has far outpaced the abilities of the State Department’s current staff. The State Department expects to issue more than 22 million passports in 2023, but applicants are facing long delays. In addition to grueling wait times, some would-be travelers have been advised to pay extra fees to expedite their applications, while others have been told to fly to other cities to pick up their in-process passports in order to complete the process in time for their trip.

Ginger Collier of Dallas applied for passports for her family’s late-June trip at the beginning of March. She was warned that it could take eight to eleven weeks for their passports to show up, and even when the State Department announced that processing time had been bumped up to thirteen weeks, she still felt confident that their passports would arrive in time. As their departure date loomed, Collier spent hours calling the State Department, trying her luck on the official website and reaching out to her congressional representative, to no avail. One official she spoke with advised her to book her family’s mandatory passport appointments in another state.

Collier ultimately got her passport four days before her flight, but Miranda Richter wasn’t as lucky. She applied in early February for a passport for a June 6 trip to Croatia with her family, and

while her husband and daughter received their passports eleven weeks later, her passport photo was rejected. Richter submitted a new photo via priority mail, paid a $79 rush fee, and spent hours on the phone reaching out to the national passport line as well as every elected official she could think of, but ultimately had to cancel her trip, taking a loss of over $1,000.

Passport issues for American citizens living in Israel have made headlines in recent months, although wait times have improved, coming down from 360 days at the beginning of June to 90 days at the start of July. Disturbing wait times have been reported elsewhere as well, including 451 days in New Delhi, India, over 600 days in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 750 days in Mexico City and 801 days in Bogota, Colombia.

At a March 23 congressional hearing, elected officials told Secretary of State Antony Blinken that passport delays are the biggest problem being reported by their constituents. Blinken acknowledged that the issue is a real concern, and blamed the problem on COVID, explaining that passport staff was reassigned or dismissed during the pandemic when travel all but ceased. He also noted that the State Department’s online passport renewal system had been taken down temporarily for improvements but has been reinstated, and that new staff was hired and additional passport appointments scheduled. He added that other solutions are being pursued.

Latest Postal Hike Takes Effect; Stamp Prices Jump to 66 Cents

Get ready to dig deeper into your pocket next time you put a letter in the mail, with the second postal price hike of the year pushing the price of first-class stamps up to 66 cents.

The three-cent rate increase went into effect on July 9 and comes less than six months after the price of a first-class stamp jumped from 60 to 63 cents. According to CBS News, it is the fifth postal increase since 2019, when it cost just 50 cents to mail a firstclass letter.

According to the United States Postal Service, the rate increase is needed to offset higher operating expenses and to rectify “the

effects of a previously defective pricing model.” Postmaster General Louis DeJoy justified the move, describing it as part of the United States Postal Service’s ten-year plan to profitability. Customers have been less than thrilled with the plan, which in addition to raising prices, also sets a six-day delivery goal for mail within the United States, twice as long as the agency’s previous three-day standard for mail delivery.

Also going up in price are postcards, which had been previously priced at 48 cents and are now selling for 51 cents, and international letters, which went up in price from $1.45 to $1.50.

Chalav Yisroel Cheese Back on the Menu at New York Schools Through National Lunch Program

Chalav Yisroel cheese will once again be available to yeshivas in New York State through the United States Department of Agriculture’s National School Lunch Program.

According to a statement released by Agudath Israel of America, New York yeshivas had been receiving chalav Yisroel cheese through the Kosher Commodities Co-op in 2021, but for the past two years, conflicts between USDA standards and kashrus requirements had cheese eliminated from the program. The issue was resolved through Agudah advocacy, making cheese, with its high protein and calcium levels, again available to yeshiva students.

Rabbi Yehoshua Pinkus, director of Yeshiva Services at the Agudah, credited Gita Deutsch of the Jewish Education Project and Sruly Sherer of World Cheese Co., which produces both Haolam and Migdal cheeses, for their efforts to identify a solution that complied with both USDA and kashrus standards.

“We are very pleased by this significant development, which allows for the availability of chalav Yisroel cheese to yeshivas participating in the National School Lunch Program,” said Rabbi Abba Cohen, Agudath Israel’s vice president for government affairs and Washington director. “This change will allow thousands of children to receive nourishing meals that meet their kashrus requirements.”

CHAPTER 14

Recap: Lani witnesses her daughter Malky being shockingly cruel to Chevi. Yaakov lands apprentice work with an experienced architect. Gittel Indig advises Riva to help Lani with her construction troubles.

When it came to the office “weather,” Riva had earned a reputation as a top meteorologist.

She’d called in that morning to say she’d be coming in late. Nobody was home sick or anything; she just wanted two hours to herself, to clean out as many cabinets as possible. Pesach loomed, and she was growing increasingly anxious that she wouldn’t make it.

It was incredible how much more efficient she was during those morning hours in a quiet house. She went from cabinet to cabinet, emptying contents, wiping down shelves, washing out whatever needed to be washed, throwing out little gadgets and containers she’d bought on a whim and hadn’t used even once, and neatly organizing everything and returning

it to the shelves. She hummed as she worked, basking in the strange serenity of this domestic activity.

Is this how a life without Kleenup looks?

She was standing on her counter, placing her Pyrex bowls back on the shelf, when she heard her cell phone chirp. She jumped off the counter and went to read the text. It was from her coworker, Miriam. If you aren’t deathly ill, I suggest you come in ASAP. We need you urgently.

There went her cleaning spree. Oh, well, she was happy with whatever she’d managed to get done.

Now, as she opened the door to the office, her weather antenna shot up immediately. Storm brewing, her instinct warned.

All the markers were there. The air was perfectly still, except for someone’s chair wheels rolling in a monotonous pattern, some pecking on keyboards,

and a general atmosphere of charged expectancy.

Riva stepped lightly to mute her footsteps, trying to remain unobtrusive as she made her way to her seat. Once she was sitting, safely concealed by her two screens, she peeked out to assess the situation.

Adina, Chaya, Miriam and Shoshi were all sitting at their desks, apparently absorbed in their work. But the desk right next to hers, Shuli’s desk, was empty.

She spotted her a moment later, sitting on the other side of Big Boss’s desk.

Hi, Manager.

She was itching to ask Miriam what the story was, why the sudden urgency. But even a quick text to her coworker felt risky. The office felt like a minefield, and one wrong step could spell disaster.

She buckled down to work instead, trying to focus on her QuickBooks tasks. There would be a lot of deposits over the next few days; many people moved during the weeks leading up to Pesach, requiring Kleenup’s services, plus there were many companies who booked cleaning crews for an annual thorough cleaning of their premises.

By the time Shuli returned to her desk, Riva’s mind had shifted from the acute tension in the office to her demanding workload. She turned her head to say a quick hello, but the words froze on her lips as she caught sight of the young new manager.

You couldn’t miss the fact: Shuli looked awful.

Her face was pale, the soft waves of her hair seemingly immobilized, as though their roots had gone cold. Her arms were stiff at her sides, her palms pressing into the vinyl of her chair. She looked afraid to breathe, afraid to move her head.

She looked like she was going to cry.

Riva knew that look. How many times had she returned from a meeting with Mr. G in that state, quaking inside, feeling like she was shrinking, shrinking, shrinking, into a nothing?

How many times had she locked herself in the office bathroom to drink air, stifle sobs? A mature adult, a mother of four children, reduced to nothing, worthless.

She knew that look. She knew that feeling. She lived that existence.

But… Shuli.

This was Mr. Gabioff’s prized manager, Miss Charming Know-It-All, Gd’s gift to humanity. What in the world was going on?

Maybe she should have felt triumphant — Serves her right. Who did she think she was, charging in on the company and rising right up to a position of leadership? But Riva felt none of that. All she felt was pity.

THE OFFICE FELT LIKE A MINEFIELD, AND ONE WRONG STEP COULD SPELL DISASTER.

It wasn’t until two o’clock, when their boss left the office for Mincha, that she had the opportunity to speak to Shuli. By that time, Shuli seemed to have more or less collected herself, making Riva reconsider approaching her at all.

Riva observed her silently. She did look composed, true, but Riva still sensed a quiver. Enough to propel her to take the risk.

She walked over casually.

“Tough morning,” she said, her tone a mix of statement and question.

Shuli combed fingers through the tips of her hair. She made brief eye contact, so fleeting that Riva could barely judge if it was deliberate or not, then flung her hair back.

“Yeah.”

Please join us... A S.M.A.R.T EVENT FOR

THE DISCERNING SHEITEL MACHER

Dear Sheitel Macher, We missed you!

BE CURRENT

WORKSHOP BY DEVORAH LEAH ADLER

Last week, S.M A R T ’s ground-breaking event for sheitel machers, which took in 3 hot locations, Boro Park, Lakewood and Monsey, was a smashing success. As close to 200 attendees watched, the program kicked off with a demonstration of wig styling techniques and an eye-opening, inspirational speech by Devorah Leah Adler, founder of the DLA Academy. It was an evening of both practical spiritual application, recognizing the pivotal role that sheitel machers play lives of so many married Jewish women. With great food and ambiance, the was a venue for networking with others who understood the nature and concerns of the wig profession. And, as so many testified, there’s more to being a sheitel macher than just creating a beautiful product for someone else to wear. We know - life happens, sometimes canceling our plans of having that out. The good news is‒you can hear the recordings of the event (and lots of features too) by calling the hotline number located on the practical bobby-pin magnet that we’ve enclosed. And‒you’re always welcome to join the S.M.A.R.T. group listing and benefit from our services, mailings and updates. Just give with your contact information and email address.

We hope you’ll join us at the next event. Looking

Safe, just like the question. Riva took off her glasses and wiped them on her sweater, allowing a few seconds to pass in silence. When she put them back on, Shuli had turned fully to face her.

“I have no idea how you survived nine years here.”

“Neither do I,” Riva said. “I’m sorry about that. I thought with you it would be different.”

“Different?” Shuli let out a short, coarse laugh. “If by different you mean worse, then yes, it’s different.”

She turned back to her screen, a sweet smile on her face, the familiar aloof barrier back in place.

With slow steps, Riva returned to her desk.

the rows, she felt someone staring at her. She turned to the right, and sure enough, Chevi Eisdorf’s eyes were aimed at her.

For a moment, Fraidy stared back. She didn’t know if her cousin was trying to tell her something, but the familiar prickle spread over her arms, like a million tiny needles digging into her skin.

She turned her head away and sat in her seat. She pulled a blank sheet of

“I have a treat for you, girls,” Miss Katz announced. “If everyone finishes the test early, we can have outdoor recess until the end of the day.”

A buzz of yessssssss erupted in the classroom. The girls exchanged urgent looks with their friends, as though conspiring to make it happen.

It was an open book history test, because the teachers didn’t want to burden the girls with too much homework between Purim and Pesach. So really, it would be easy to get the test done quickly and head outside.

Easy for Fraidy Stroh, at least.

She reviewed her answers one last time, stacked the papers on her desk, and looked around the room. All of her classmates were still hard at work, flipping pages in their history books, frowning at the question sheet, scribbling answers.

Okay, she was used to this. She often finished her tests first. They’d probably all be done soon. The test had been really easy, even if it hadn’t been open book. She headed up to Miss Katz’s desk, put her test down, and headed back to her seat to wait.

As she made her way back between

paper out of her briefcase and absently started drawing a maze. Line, line, twist, curve, split it off, path A, path B, split it again, four paths now, lock one up, extend another, split, sub-split, lock.

Girls started handing in their test papers. Shevy Schwartz, Sari Bauer, Racheli Gluckstein. Fraidy glanced from her maze to Miss Katz’s desk and then briefly around the room. Most girls were done now. She drew a few more lines on her maze, then packed up her briefcase. Chevi handed in her test paper, and Fraidy saw her look

around the room to check who wasn’t done yet. She seemed relieved to see a few girls still writing.

The class made it. When the last test paper was handed in, Miss Katz told the girls to pack up quickly and line up at the door.

“Let’s play Belts!” Shaindy Oberman shouted.

“No, we always play Belts,” Chevi said. “We didn’t play jump rope in aaaaages.”

“Yeah!” Tziporah said. Of course, she said yeah to everything Chevi suggested.

Chevi turned to Dassi Guttman. “Do you still have your rope in school, Dassi?”

“Uch, I don’t want to play jump rope,” Brachi protested. “I always get out in the first round. It’s so boring.”

“It’s so not boring,” Chevi huffed. “You can turn the rope if you don’t want to jump.”

“Hey, Fraidy, what do you want to play?” Brachi asked.

Fraidy didn’t want to join the debate. A while ago, she would’ve shared her opinion, said which sport she preferred, but not these days. These days, it felt safer to just stay quiet and do whatever everyone else decided. Especially when her preference wasn’t the same as Chevi’s.

But Brachi was waiting for an answer. “Hmm?” she prodded.

“I-i-i-t doesn’t matter,” Fraidy said. “Wh-wh-wh-atever you ch-ch-oose.” She didn’t know why, but the words came out all broken up, like it was impossible to connect the sounds.

“We ch-ch-ch-ch-ooooooooose jump rope,” Chevi said.

Heat rose on Fraidy’s cheeks. She heard a few girls giggle, and tugged at the bottom of her sweater, afraid to meet anyone’s eyes.

The class agreed on jump rope, and of course, Chevi got to be first. Fraidy joined the end of the line reluctantly.

The game wasn’t so bad. The line moved quickly, as most girls moved right along without getting “out.” When they did, the line grew shorter, and the game got faster and more intense.

Eventually, there were five girls left in the game: Tziporah, Shevy, Racheli, Fraidy and Chevi.

Shaindy Oberman and Brachi Fried

were turning the rope. Their faces were red, but they kept going. The girls in line bounced in place, zipped through the turning rope, jumped twice, zipped out, ran around the “turners,” and got back in line again.

Fraidy was getting out of breath, but she kept going. It was fun; she actually enjoyed jump rope.

Then Chevi got out.

“It was Fraidy’s fault!” she shouted. “She was standing too close to me, I couldn’t run in properly.”

Shaindy and Brachi dropped the rope ends, shaking their arms to relieve the exertion.

“Cheater!” Chevi continued yelling. “Because you think you have to win every game. It’s not called winning, it’s called cheating. You’re such a baby.”

Fraidy’s face was hot, but it wasn’t from jumping. She had not stood too closely. She was right on line where she was supposed to be, gearing up for her turn to jump.

Surely everyone had seen that?

There were four girls still “in,” but somehow, with Chevi “out,” the game ended. Fraidy kicked the abandoned jump rope, keeping her eyes on the ground. She didn’t trust herself to face anyone.

Chevi walked right past her and crouched down to her briefcase. She took out a lollipop, a jumbo, colorful one that Fraidy knew tasted gross.

“Heeeey, can I have a lick?” Tziporah begged.

Chevi gave a long suck. “Sure,” she laughed. “If you’re okay with taking germs.”

“Umm…”

Brachi stuffed her jacket into her briefcase and hitched her briefcase on her shoulder. “If you’re looking to share,” she said, “you could share with Fraidy Stroh. You’re cousins, so it isn’t really germs, right?”

Fraidy gripped her briefcase strap. She didn’t turn her head to face Chevi, but she heard her every word.

“Huh? Fraidy? I would never share with her. She has stinky yellow teeth, because she never brushes them.”

Before her words had a chance to sink in, she marched over to Fraidy and punched her on the back. TO

TRANSFORMING MINERALS INTO ART

I first experienced the allure of the jewelry and gem trade at a young age. My father opened a jewelry store and repair shop a few years before I was born, and my first job was inspecting jewelry in my father’s store to see if any pieces needed touch ups or repairs. I remember the way my eyes popped and my jaw dropped the first time I held a parcel of diamonds and then a bar of gold, and was told how much it was worth.

Creating a piece of jewelry is not only about drawing a pretty picture and gluing “stones” to metal. Over the years I took professional courses on how to create, repair and design jewelry.

So, what does a jeweler actually do every day?

By definition, a “jeweler” is a person or company that makes or sells jewelry. In the trade, though, the term “jeweler” is usually used to refer to the person who actually puts together or repairs jewelry. Besides the jeweler, there are many other specialists who may be involved in the process of creating or repairing jewelry. For example, the designer conceives the style of the piece, and the CAD designer takes the description or sketch and transforms it into a digital file that is then 3D printed and later transformed into metal by the caster. The setter then prepares the metal mounting and sets the gem into the metal.

Other specialists may be involved, depending on the complexity of the job, and within each category there are varying levels of expertise and skill. In general, you typically get a level of quality in accordance with how much you paid; the cheapest possible item will have lower quality materials and workmanship.

What differences of quality can there possibly be in gold and diamonds?

A diamond is essentially a crystalized chunk of carbon atoms; the actual internal structure is referred to as the “crystal lattice.” Think of it like an interconnected tower of glass Legos. Remember building structures as a kid that were rock-solid and impossible to break, because of how the Lego bricks were connected? Now take that concept down to the atomic level and you will understand that diamond is one of the hardest things on the planet because of its densely linked structure. In fact, the only thing that can scratch a diamond is another diamond. Within this crystalized structure there can be different types of what the industry calls “inclusions”: imperfections within the crystal structure that may appear black or white, in the shape of specks, feathers, or needles. The presence and quantity of these inclusions is rated as the “clarity” of the stone. Stones with the fewest inclusions and highest clarity are considered more desirable and thus more expensive.

What can I do if I am sensitive to gold?

We’ve helped people who get infections while wearing certain earrings determine why they were reacting to those earrings, and which metal they are allergic to — and then remedied it by replacing the posts with a more hypo-allergenic metal. The most common sensitivities we see are to nickel and to silver. We determine this by using a machine called an “XRF scanner,” which is kind of like an X-ray that detects the contents of the metal, broken down

into elements and sorted from greatest to lowest presence in the piece. Just like with diamond-checking tools, the best results come from the highest quality tools (which most jewelers do not have on hand).

What advice would you give people about the day-to-day wearing of their jewelry?

TELL ME QUICK:

NAME: Bentzion Yehoshua

BUSINESS NAME: Motek Jewelry

YEARS IN BUSINESS: 3

MY MOTTO: Quality first

Just like your car needs oil changes and new filters in order to keep it running properly, your jewelry could greatly benefit from an occasional deep-clean and regular preventative maintenance. This is especially true with pieces you wear daily. Electroplating rubs off and needs to be renewed every nine to fifteen months, metal gets micro scratches and goes from polished to dullish, and structural components such as prongs and joints (jump rings, links, etc.) wear down over time. A monthly or bi-monthly cleaning and inspection can save you thousands of dollars over time. You can easily prevent the need to replace a missing diamond by simply re-tipping the heads of worndown prongs.

What’s all this I’ve been hearing about lab grown diamonds?

WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW: You get what you pay for.

MOST COMMON REQUEST:

To explain what a lab-grown diamond is… and then to design a custom lab-grown diamond piece.

They’re the latest craze! Stay tuned — we’ll be talking about that next.

Bentzion Yehoshua founded Motek Jewelry together with his wife Nomi, MS, RDN, where they support clients in creating or discovering the greatest piece of jewelry they’ve ever worn, all while staying within budget.

SAVORY CHICKEN PIZZA 96 The Boro Park View

DOUGH

SAVORY CHICKEN PIZZA

There’s nothing quite like a good homemade pizza dough paired with seriously savory meat toppings. This recipe yields two pies.

I find that using half high-gluten flour and half white whole-wheat flour makes for the tastiest combination. The whole-wheat flour isn’t a must; the main thing is to use at least half high-gluten flour, because that’s where the crispiness comes from.

INGREDIENTS

1¼ cups warm water

2 T. sugar

2 tsp. active dry yeast

2 T. olive oil

1 tsp. salt

½ tsp. garlic powder

½ tsp. oregano or basil

1.5 cups Wondermills challah (high-gluten) flour

1.5 cups Wondermills white whole-wheat flour

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large bowl, mix together the water, sugar and yeast. Cover this with cling wrap, and let stand until the mixture is frothy.

2. Add oil and mix.

3. Mix the salt and spices into the flour, then slowly add this to the bowl.

4. Knead this together until a dough forms. The dough should be sticky but manageable. Add more flour if necessary.

5. Once the dough is formed, grease the bowl and turn the dough to coat. Cover and allow the dough to rise for 1 hour.

6. Punch down the dough and divide it in two. To freeze a portion of the dough for later use, freeze it as soon as it has finished rising. When you’re ready to use the dough, thaw it in the refrigerator, then bring it to room temperature for one hour before baking.

TOPPING

INGREDIENTS

2 T. olive oil

1 large onion, chopped

2 pinches salt, divided

4 cloves garlic

1 lb. ground chicken

6 oz. smoked turkey cold cuts, cubed

½ lb. of your favorite pizza sauce

Honey and black pepper, to sprinkle on top

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat. Add the onions along with a pinch of salt. Saute for a few minutes until the edges turn golden.

2. Add the crushed garlic, and saute for an additional minute.

3. Add the ground chicken along with another pinch of salt, and cook, stirring frequently to break up the meat, until it is no longer pink.

4. Add the cold cuts and mix to incorporate. Remove from heat.

5. Take half the dough, and roll it out into an 11” circle, the size of your pizza maker. Resist the urge to use a parchment paper when baking; you will be rewarded with a perfect crispy pizza crust (the dough doesn’t leave much mess in the pizza maker anyway).

6. Add the dough to the pizza maker, and pre-bake it for 12 to 15 minutes, until the bottom of the dough is nicely browned.

7. Add pizza sauce and half of the meat topping, and cook for an additional 10 to 15 minutes.

8. Top the pizza with a drizzle of honey and freshly ground black pepper, or a drizzle of garlic aioli.

ASIAN CHICKEN EGG ROLLS 98 The Boro Park View

ASIAN CHICKEN EGG ROLLS

These tasty and filling egg rolls make for a complete meal with a salad or rice. You can freeze the assembled egg rolls raw, then fry them at your convenience.

INGREDIENTS

1 lb. ground chicken

2 cloves garlic, crushed

2 cubes frozen ginger

8 oz. shredded cabbage and carrots (coleslaw mix)

3 scallions, white parts only, chopped

1 T. sesame oil

Pinch of cinnamon

½ tsp. salt

½ tsp. sugar

12–15 eggroll wrappers

Oil, for frying

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the ground chicken, garlic and ginger, and cook, stirring to break up the chicken, until it is crumbly and no longer pink.

2. Drain the excess liquid, and return the chicken mixture to the heat.

3. Add the remaining ingredients, and continue cooking for several more minutes, until the cabbage and carrots are somewhat tender.

4. Remove this filling from the heat, and allow it to cool slightly.

5. Place about two tablespoons of the chicken-vegetable mixture on the center of an eggroll wrapper.

6. Brush the wrapper’s edges with water or beaten egg.

7. Fold one corner of the wrapper over the filling. Bring the other two corners slightly over to the center, then roll the entire eggroll to seal it closed.

8. Repeat the above steps with the remaining egg rolls.

9. Fry the egg rolls in hot oil until golden.

There’s something super kid-friendly about a breaded chicken burger. Prepare a batch and freeze some raw to fuel those active summer afternoons.

INGREDIENTS

1½ lb. ground chicken

1½ cups breadcrumbs, divided

½ cup seltzer

1 egg

1 tsp. garlic powder

1 tsp. onion powder

1 tsp. parsley flakes

½ tsp. kosher salt

Oil, for frying

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine all burger ingredients, using only 1/2 cup of breadcrumbs. (Reserve the rest for the coating.) Form this mixture into patties.

2. Place 1 cup breadcrumbs in a shallow dish. Coat the patties in breadcrumbs, then fry the patties in oil until they’re golden on both sides and cooked through.

Along for the Ride

How to Survive a Road Trip with Kids

My aunt once mentioned that she and her husband had driven from New York to Florida with all of their kids. More than once.

I stared at her in profound shock. Like, imagine being related to a superhero. I simply could not wrap my brain around it.

Oh, I’ve done road trips. Back in the day. Before I had kids, when I could put the seat back and conk out if I wanted and wake up hours later. Hello, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Massachusetts.

But traveling with kids is an avodah of the body, mind and heart. And ears. Oy, the ears!

To start the season of travel smoothly, I curated some travel tips to make your quest for rejuvenation easier. And from the comfort of my home, where snacks and freeze-pops are but an arm’s reach away, I cheer you on as you embark on your journey.

A Tip on Tips

Do you sometimes get dizzy from lists of top-tens and must-remembers? Same. It’s an era of information and we’re inundated. So know this: Sometimes, all it takes is one great tip to really improve your experience. Consider my tips a display on a shelf. Happy picking and choosing!

Packing Them Up

Okay, deep breath. Because I live in the moment and lists give me hives, my MO is we’ll-figure-itout. If I’m not the queen of winging it, I’m her lady-in-waiting. But! There are packing tips I’ve utilized successfully and, coming from me, they’re extra special because it means they’re super-heavy-duty and also geared for people — like myself — with ADHD tendencies.

In a nutshell: Think about each item you pack: When will I use this? Items to be used at your destination go only in the suitcase or in the car trunk. Items kids will use in the car go in their respective bags. And items you’ll use to clean up car messes go in the glove compartment. Your emergency chocolate stash will need to find a new home.

Suitcases

You’ll be jamming tons of stuff into a small space, so every inch is at a premium. Also, you’ll want to pack and unpack easily. This is why I’ve been loving the bag-per-kid method of packing. Thank you, bungled anti-plastic-bag law, for the surplus of non-woven numbers that live under my sink. I pack the stuff for one kid at a time into a large bag, with accessories and underwear in smaller bags inside. Line up all the bags in the suitcase. Arrive at destination and remove all bags from suitcase. Line them up neatly in a corner; stow suitcase until it’s time to go home.

No rummaging through everyone’s stuff when the kids change in and out of clothes, and if a kid gets dirty and needs to change, the whole suitcase doesn’t need to be reorganized. Checks all around!

Family Car Bag

Here’s where you’ll store anything that’s beyond the pretty little heads of junior passengers to worry about.

• Change of clothes for all

• Motion-sickness bags

• Paper towels for lighter messes

• Wipes (Yes, you’ll have these in the glove compartment, the trunk and the kids’ bags. You can never have enough.)

• Towel, for heavy-duty disasters

• Extra garbage bags

• Sunblock/insect repellent

• Ball or frisbee to unwind with at a rest stop

Individual Car Bags

Whether you’ll be using shopping bags, backpacks, or getting all fancy with personalized organizers, every kid needs their own bag in the car. Unless your armlength rivals Basya’s and you love pretzeling your neck.

Here’s a list of what’s handy in each:

• Snacks

• Water bottle

• Small prize/activity

• Tissues/wipes

Tip: Alternatively, use shower caddies for the kids’ activities and snacks. These are extremely handy and also put welcome space between He Looked at Me and She Started First.

Tip: If I could ban one thing from cars, it would be family packs. Of anything. My neck hurts in warning as I type this and beg you to harness the awesome power of single-serve. Yogurts, fruit puree, snacks, junk. And if you eschew single servings because they’re more expensive, by all means, buy in bulk and individualize at home.

Packing It In

Putting everything in the car is a major reality check, almost like turning theory to practice. For the question of what goes where and how to minimize clutter, use the above-mentioned mindset of thinking what you’ll use when.

The Glove Compartment

Will have things you really need at hand.

• Siddur/Tehillim

• Sunglasses (Once, when my kids were young and naive and misbehaving in the backseat, my husband and I simultaneously donned sunglasses and turned around. All delinquents froze in shock.)

• Wipes (Yes, even if you have some in the back.)

• Emergency bribes

• First-aid kit

• Motion-sickness bags

The Trunk

• Family car bag (see above)

• Extra blanket

• Outerwear

Keeping It Clean

This is key. A car can become a zoo in the space of five seconds if you don’t have safeguards in place. Go crazy with those wipes. Hang shopping bags between each row of seats, or get a car garbage can. Best is to make that plural for easiest trashing and the tidiest effect.

How to Survive a Road Trip with Kids
110 www.thebpview.com 718.408.8770 The Boro Park View July 12, 2023

Keeping Them Happy

This is huge, and there isn’t an exact formula for it. Putting all organizing theory aside, this is what’ll make or break your trip: happy kids. And the secret is in the advance planning. If there’s a single magic word to remember here, it’s proactivity. Don’t wait for your kids to get into trouble (because they will; it’s inevitable), but actively think about how to keep them busy. Which translates into calm and happy. The stuff golden memories are made of!

For short car trips, I have my kids choose an item or two from their respective prize boxes. (Heaven knows they have only the haziest clue as to what’s in there, so let them use their trinkets at least once in a while!)

Longer trips are your opportunity to buy out the local dollar store. Those are packed with gems for road trips — all manner of party favors and travel-sized entertainment. You can use colored paper bags to pre-prep activity kits for each day of travel.

Emergency

Trunk Stash

• First-aid kit

• Working flashlight with batteries

• Phone charger

• Map and compass

• Blanket

• Drinking water and nonperishable foods

• Reflective cloth and vest

• Duct tape

• Seatbelt cutter

• Inflated spare tire, wheel wrench and tripod jack

• Fire extinguisher

• Jumper cables

Here is an enticing list of potential entertainment:

• Fidget toys/brainy mazes

• Travel-sized games

• Colored pencil roll

• Crayola Color Wonder markers and papers, a fantabulous invention by everyone’s favorite factory that precludes junior art enthusiasts from coloring on anything but the Color Wonder paper. The markers simply won’t work on anything else.

• Boogie boards — an inexpensive digital writing pad, reusable with the touch of a button

• Coloring books/word games

And for games to play:

• License plate search: See how many license plates you can find from different states.

• Counting cars: Have each kid choose a different car color, and count how many pass in the opposite direction.

Tip: Make the most of your car mirror when talking to your kids, rather than dizzying neck-twisting. Make eye-contact, waggle your eyebrows and wave to show them you’re present and listening.

Tip: Designate pockets of quiet time in the car to give everyone a breather. Discuss the rules of quiet time beforehand to make sure everyone’s clear on what they can/cannot do then. (Yes, you can do a quiet activity then. You can even sleep then. No, you cannot tell a story then. No, you cannot fight then.) Reward good behavior during quiet time when you exit this entrancing trance.

Sensory Struggles

For some unfortunates among us, simple snacking or humming can lead to feeling… overstimulated would be too kind a term. The enclosed-ness of a car can raise the anxiety to a fevered pitch. How to keep tempers even while triggers abound? The first few suggestions are ways of dealing with it; the last few, emergency cop-outs. But desperate times, right?

Join the fun. Seriously, grab a bag of super-snacks, and crunch along if eating noises make you crazy. It helps. Let loose and chew loudly for once. It’s liberating. Breathe. Do so deeply, in and out, to calm your body.

Brain talk. Tell this to that gray spongy organ in a state of emergency: It’s not dangerous. Listen to the crunching/ humming/slurping, and see what happens. Nothing. Tell that to your brain to hamper the fight-or-flight.

Music. Turn on your favorite melody, and let it take you far away.

Plug. A discreet pair of earplugs may be your answer, if all else fails.

The Way Back

If there’s one thing that’s easy to overlook, it’s the way back, when all the excitement of travel has fizzled out. When every adult is desperate for quiet and the kids are cranky and overstimulated and heartbroken that their fun has come to an end. Be one of those who prep for it. A small investment of time before the trip will yield huge dividends in terms of calm, content and a family-wide processing of the fun times had.

Grab some pointers:

TRAVEL JOURNAL: Younger kids can draw and decorate; older kids can decorate and write. Have each kid keep a little notebook just for family trips. Hand them out on the way back, along with pens, crayons and some stickers so they’ll be excited to put down their impressions and keep the fun going, instead of feeling miserable that the good times are over.

FAMILY SHARE: Give each family member a turn to share their general impressions or favorite parts of the trip.

NEW ACTIVITY: Stash away some small prizes/activities for the way back. Break them out to bring a dash of excitement into an otherwise exhausting return journey. You can do the same with a special snack for the way home.

Here’s to hoping that your trip will bring you a boatload of fun moments and treasured memories. And remember: Mishaps handled well build family muscle!

Bon voyage!

Packing individual meals on trays and wrapping them tightly with Cling Wrap makes for convenient on-the-go meals with minimal mess.

Once they’re wrapped tightly, trays can be stored in any direction and piled one on top of the other in a bag, box or cooler.

This type of packing is also great for picnic suppers, due to the trays’ transportability and the sturdy surface they provide for eating.

Note: While cafeteria trays were used here, you can use disposable foam or plastic trays for convenience.

A few hours’ drive from the standard New York stomping grounds is an enchanting place of extreme beauty. There, water rushes over chiseled rock, and boats sail gently across placid lakes. Grapevines creep across the countryside, and the air is crisp and invigorating. Welcome to the Finger Lake region, so named for the eleven lakes that, when viewed from above, somewhat resemble a human hand. You can certainly see the Hand of Hashem within their beauty.

CAYUGA and SENECA

lakes are two of the deepest lakes in the United States. Seneca is nearly one-eighth of a mile deep, while Cayuga is just a bit shallower at 435 feet deep. Both of the lakes are named after the Iroquois tribes who originally inhabited the area.

Each of the eleven lakes are great places to explore the great outdoors, but HEMLOCK and CANADICE are for those who really want to rough it. Kayaking down either of these leave you in your own bubble of tranquility, for these two lakes are the only ones in the Finger Lake region that have undeveloped shorelines. Here, it’s nature at its best.

CANADICE LAKE

A half-century ago, the AMERICAN BALD EAGLE was a rarity in New York State, with only one known pair of eagles nesting. Due to DDT poisoning, eagle eggshells became unnaturally weak, causing them to break, killing the young inside. At that point, a solitary pair of New York nesting eagles managed to successfully hatch their young in the Hemlock Lake area. Fortunately, over the last 50 years, the eagle population has grown to almost 400 nesting eagles, giving these birds a lovely chance of survival in New York. If you’re lucky, you might just catch a glimpse of a Bald Eagle couple and their crew.

The FINGER LAKE REGION is so much more than lakes! Deep green foliage, naturally chiseled stone, and gorgeous gorges make for many magnificent hikes. The WATKINS GLEN STATE PARK is outstanding for its somewhat jungle-like environment, in which you can wind your way along the gorge trail, which is paved with stone. On this hike you’ll see not one, but an astounding nineteen waterfalls!

The Finger Lake region is the perfect climate for grape growing, and OVER ONE HUNDRED VINEYARDS dot the region. Though most of them aren’t kosher, there’s one that must be mentioned: The Manischewitz Winery, which is the largest producer of kosher wine in the world.

While in the Finger Lakes region, you’ll want to swing by the SONNENBERG GARDENS and its QUEEN ANNE Victorian-style mansion boasting 40 rooms. It’s breathtakingly beautiful, and the perfect prescription for a relaxing day.

You don’t really have to travel to see the breathtaking handiwork of Hashem; you can find it in your own backyard or city streets. His stamp is on the flowers and trees, and on the smallest of ants that scurry down the sidewalk. But everyday miracles often mask His majestic fingerprints, – and when that happens, it might just be worthwhile to get away, to see His Hand upon the Finger Lakes.

Boston The Birthplace of America

Boston is a fantastic all-around trip destination. It’s a city that is rich in American history, nature and additional attractions. Boston also has kosher food and minyanim.

We visited for a two-day trip one fall and managed to do a lot in Boston. At only a bit over a three-hour drive from Monsey, it’s a very worthwhile trip. There’s also the option of taking an Amtrak train to get there.

Harbor Walk

The Harbor Walk starts at the Atlantic Wharf across the street from the Tea Party Ship and Museum and continues alongside the beautiful harbor. The walkway passes through Rowe’s Wharf, the New England Aquarium, Christopher Columbus Park and Sergeant’s Wharf, and ends all the way at Battery Wharf.

When we visited Boston, we stayed right at the harbor. We walked along the Harbor Walk at night, enjoying the fresh air and the sights of the docked boats and the twinkling lights of the building.

There are a lot of activities in the area. The Tea Party Ship and Museum is fascinating, and there are inexpensive Hubway bike rentals, where bikes can be picked up and dropped off in various stations all over the city. There are also ferries and water taxis, parks, and the New England Aquarium along the Harbor walk. It’s definitely a busy and beautiful area to visit.

The Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway

After strolling along the Harbor walk at night, we crossed over the Christopher Columbus Park to the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway, a series of parks that led back down to our destination on Atlantic Avenue.

We entered the Greenway right near the Greenway Carousel and continued to the beautiful Ring Fountain, then through Mother’s Walk. In the Harbor Fog Fountain area, the foggy fountain sprayed us with mist and caught us by surprise. We exited the Greenway at the Fort Point Channel Park, although the Greenway continues to the Dewey Square Park and then to the Chinatown Park.

I was amazed at how each section of the park has its own unique character and is extremely well maintained. I kept thinking that the parks would end, but the Greenway continued to lead to more and more areas.

Boston Duck Tour

Riding a bus into the water (you read correctly; the bus is driven directly into the water) is an experience that’s hard to forget.

The idea of “duck boats” was actually conceived during World War II. They were used by the military as a convenient mode of transport — trucks that didn’t need to be unloaded onto boats; boats with no need to dock. Now the Duck Boats are used as a fun way to explore and get to know the city of Boston.

The tours leave from three popular tourist sites: the Boston Science Museum, The Prudential Center and the New England Aquarium. Discounts available when those attractions are bought in conjunction with the Duck Tour tickets. Duck Tour visitors can also access parking at a reduced rate.

The conDUCKtors narrate the 80-minute tour, 60 minutes on land and 20 minutes on the beautiful Charles River. During the ride, the conDucktor explains about the three F’s you’ll encounter in Boston: The city represents Freedom, it’s the city of Firsts, and of course, it’s a Fun place to be. Some of the famous landmarks seen on the tour are the golden-domed State House, the Bunker Hill Monument, Boston Common, Copley Square, the Big Dig, the Boston Public Library, the Prudential Tower and, of course,

The Boston Common

The 50-acre Boston Common is the oldest park in America, dating back to 1634. The pentagon-shaped park borders on Tremont, Park, Beacon, Charles, and Boylston streets. The Common has witnessed many events of history and protests throughout the years. The historic 2.5-mile Freedom Trail, with many historic sites along the way, starts from the Common. In addition to the large grassy fields found on the Common, there are tennis courts, an exciting Tadpole Playground, a carousel, and the Frog Pond in which children can splash in the spray pool. In the winter, the Frog Pond becomes a skating rink. Originally, there were three ponds in the common. The Frog Pond is the only one left.

the magnificent Boston and Cambridge skyline, seen from the Charles River.

When we were on the tour, our entertaining and engaging tour guide taught us about the history of Boston and the wicked way of talking in Boston. He even allowed us to take turns steering the Duck on the river.

The Duck Tour is the absolute best way to see Boston and get a real feeling for its history while having fun at the same time.

The Skywalk Observatory in Boston is located on the 50th floor of the Prudential Shopping Center in Boston. Boston Public Garden

The Boston Public Garden is a formal garden located across the street from the Boston Common. The garden is beautifully kept by caring citizens through the Friends of the Public Garden Association. The garden was the first public botanical garden in America, dating back to 1838. It’s masterfully designed, with trees planted from countries all around the world. The trees have name tags with relevant information hanging from them.

There is a majestic statue of George Washington on a horse at the Arlington Street entrance. The Duckling Sculpture at the corner of Beacon and Charles is also extremely popular. The statue is based on Robert McCloskey’s 1941 children’s bestseller Make Way for Ducklings ; the bronze figures represent Mrs. Mallard and her eight ducklings.

From early April to late September, the original Swan Boats are open for visitors. The Swan Boats were first designed in 1877 and have been gliding along the lagoon ever since. The boats move along at two miles an hour, circle the island, and go under the bridge. A trip on the Swan Boat adds excitement to a visit to the beautiful garden.

Boston Tea Party Ship and Museum

Before we entered the Tea Party Ship and Museum, I told my husband, “I really don’t want to spend much time here. Max a half hour. Let’s look around quickly and then continue. Don’t read everything…”

But I was taken by surprise when we began the tour. The guides were all dressed in clothing from the period prior to the Revolution and reenacted the meetings and the actual throwing of the tea into the sea. Everything was presented so interestingly, you wouldn’t know you were learning history.

Each visitor on the tour was given an identity of one of the men who took part in the Boston Tea Party, with some personal details about him. After meeting to discuss the major tax issues, we headed out to the ship to dump the tea off the authentically restored ship into the sea.

The tour then continued to the museum (no photos al-

lowed in the museum) where you can view the only surviving tea chest from the Boston Tea Party, a 3D holographic exhibit and an award-winning multi-sensory film that takes you through time until America became its own independent country.

Places to stay

When we went to Boston for two days, we stayed at the harbor. There are many hotels to choose from. The prices are more expensive there since it’s a tourist/vacation area. The harbor is about a 20-minute drive to a minyan or kosher food. These hotels are within walking distance of the shuls in Brookline.

A DIY sukkah decoration series

Chava Schwartz

It’s summertime, the perfect season to take on a fun and creative project. This painting project will teach you many painting skills while showing you how to create beautiful artwork for your sukkah.

Over these eight weeks, we will guide you on how to complete a beautiful, hand-painted shivas haminim sukkah decoration. Each of the shivas haminim will get a separate painting as part of this series, and the last week of instructions will be reserved for writing the names of the shivas haminim onto the completed paintings.

The paintings will be taught in a step-bystep manner so everyone can join and enjoy. You do not need to be an artist to create this masterpiece.

Happy painting!

WEEK 3

Gefen | Grapes

For the third painting of this series, we’ll be painting a vineyard. In this picture, the grapes are visible through the large leaves on the vines, and the center path creates the perfect setting for an imaginary walk through the vineyard where you can almost touch, smell and feel the richness of the grapes. Have fun painting!

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Acrylic paint is not washable. Make sure to dress appropriately or wear a smock.

If clothes do get dirty, wash with soap and water immediately.

TIPS:

• Before you paint, put the paint colors you’ll be using onto the plate or palette. Fill your cup with water, and keep a paper towel nearby.

• Use baby wipes to fix mistakes while the paint is still wet.

• Keep your brushes in the water when they are not in use.

• When you finish painting, wash your brushes with soap and water.

SUPPLIES:

• Smock

• Plate or palette

• Cup

• Paper towel

• 8x10” canvas

• Large brushes

• Medium brushes

• Thin brushes

• Easel (optional)

ACRYLIC PAINTS:

• Phthalo blue

• Magenta (or red)

• Yellow ocher

• Brown

• Sage green

• Violet

• White

THERE IS NO RIGHT OR WRONG WAY TO PAINT! EACH PERSON’S PAINTING WILL LOOK DIFFERENT. REMEMBER TO ENJOY THE PROCESS INSTEAD OF BEING FOCUSED ON THE RESULTS.

STEP 1

Mix blue and white to get light blue, and paint the top half of the canvas. Next, mix yellow ocher and white to get a light sand color, and use this to paint the bottom half.

STEP 2

Mix sage green with some white. Paint the two sides and top of the yellow ocher with this green, leaving out the center in a zigzag manner.

STEP 3

Mix yellow ocher with a bit of magenta. Fill the space left between the green with this darker color to create the path.

STEP 4

Using some more sage green paint, add globs of darker green to the light green areas on both sides of the canvas, to create the effect of leaves.

STEP 5

Using brown paint, add some small vertical lines to the center edge of the greenery on the right side of the canvas. Add some more lines between the leaves.

STEP 6

Mix violet and some magenta to create a deep grape color. Paint clusters of dots to create bunches of grapes along the path on both sides of the vineyard. Note that the left side of the vineyard features some larger bunches of grapes.

STEP 7

Proudly sign your painting!

CONGRATULATIONS!

YOU’VE COMPLETED THE THIRD PAINTING IN THIS SERIES.

LAKE: a large body of water surrounded by land

Paint Some Polka Dots

When you picture a lake, what comes to mind? A beautiful expanse of blue water? Well, not Lake Khiluk in British Columbia, Canada. If you visit this lake in the summer, you’ll see large pools of green, blue, and yellow that give the lake a polka-dotted look. How does this happen? The lake has a large concentration of minerals. In the summer, a lot of the water evaporates in the heat, so the minerals are less diluted. The minerals give the water its color.

POND: a small body of water surrounded by land

Monet’s Pond

This might be the most famous pond worldwide. It’s located in Giverny, France, and was bought by the famous painter Claude Monet in 1893. One of his reasons for buying the property containing this body of water was for the purpose of painting pictures of it. Monet painted no fewer than eighteen views of his pond with the bridge over it. The pond is full of pretty water lilies, so these paintings are appropriately called Water Lily. People still visit this pond today, to see the subject of those famous paintings.

182 The Boro Park View

RIVER: a large, flowing body of water that empties into a sea or ocean

Way Up There

You may have gone whitewater rafting on the Delaware River, but how about floating down the highest river in the world? The Yarlung Tsangpo River in Tibet, China, has an average elevation of 4,000 meters. It’s called the Everest of Rivers because it is so high up.

OCEANS AND SEAS: bodies of saltwater

Drinking Seawater: Desalination

With most of Planet Earth covered in water, we Earthlings should never be lacking drinking water, right? Well, almost. Since the vast oceans and seas are made of saltwater, which humans can’t drink, we can still run out of drinkable water. Unless you can figure out a way to make the saltwater drinkable. That’s where desalination comes in. This process has been used for hundreds of years, especially on ships, to get freshwater from the ocean. The simplest way to desalinate the water, or remove the salt, copies the water cycle. First, you turn the water into water vapor, which separates the salt from the water. Then you condense the vapor back into water in another container. Voila! There’s your fresh water.

New Ocean on the Block

Can you name your oceans? Atlantic, Pacific, Indian and Arctic. Right — except that lately another ocean has been named: the Antarctic. It’s the body of water along the southern tip of the globe near Antarctica.

Some Ocean Facts

ARCTIC: the smallest, shallowest and coldest ocean

The Liquid Rainbow

This one might make your eyes pop. There’s a river called Cano Cristales in South America that has thick stripes of five different colors: red, yellow, green, blue and black. Each color is created by a different element. The red comes from a plant, the green from algae, yellow from the sand, blue from clear water and black from rocks. It’s definitely a sight to see!

PACIFIC: the largest and calmest ocean. Magellan, a sixteenth-century explorer, gave it the name from the word pacify, or peaceful.

ATLANTIC: busiest ocean

INDIAN: warmest and most dangerous ocean. Because a large part of the Indian Ocean is located along the equator, its waters are very warm. This creates the perfect conditions for dangerous storms like tsunamis, monsoons and cyclones, making it the roughest of the oceans.
