I am writing in response to the article in last week’s issue with the different “tablescape” ideas for Rosh Hashana. When I was growing up, this time of the year was spent doing things to make yourself a better person. We focused on working on middos and instilling yiras shamayim in our children. As the yom tov season approaches, I see people busy spending money and time on things that are a distraction from the avodah of this time of year. I hope we can rethink our priorities.

THE TIME HAS COME

(Re: The Problem with Prodigies, Inbox, Issue 199)

I am writing this letter in reference to the letter “The Problems with Prodigies,” which covered an important yet often unaddressed topic: Giftedness.

I know some readers might think, “I wish this was my kid’s problem, my child is struggling to read, learn, comprehend, behave…” As a Special Ed professional for children with learning disabilities, I can say that you’re right, your child is struggling, and that’s very painful and frustrating situation. But in today’s mainstream schools, their needs are (hopefully) being met, or at least addressed, by the wonderful resource rooms which have been established in most schools. Given that they are receiving the proper intervention, they are learning and

making small yet measurable gains.

As the mother of a gifted child, my child is struggling too. Struggling with his behavior, impulsivity, emotional regulation, accepting authority.... These are all common presentations that develop in gifted children due to various factors associated with their giftedness. My child goes to school every day, learns nothing new, and makes no gains. My child’s learning needs are not being met, causing a vicious cycle of behavioral issues. Since the root of these behaviors is not the same as the root of the difficult behaviors in typical learners, the interventions for typical learners are not effective. Treating the behaviors similarly backfires, leaving frustrated adults (including professionals and school staff) and an angry, bitter child.

Our society has invested so much in helping struggling students learn, and baruch Hashem those children are receiving the care they need and developing into functional adults. For some reason, we have not invested in the brightest, yet struggling, population. Statistics show that neglecting the needs of these children leads to devastating effects. They are adult brains trapped in children’s bodies with disproportionate cognitive and emotional abilities. Since they are not challenged, they learn to shut down. Or they may become depressed, or question authority, or find themselves unable to perform unstimulating tasks. Later, this may snowball into an inability to work through challenges at later stages of life. The daily frustration causes them to develop a dislike to school and learning.

I wish to clarify that I am not talking about very bright students who are functioning beautifully at the top of the class (even if they are often bored). The classic gifted child is cognitively way above his age group and emotionally below. This contradiction creates many struggles for these brilliant minds.

Thanks for your question. In fact, several readers contacted us, confused about this very point. The pasuk (Devarim 8:8) lists the seventh min as devash, which we translate as honey. However, in Shemos (34:36), the pasuk discusses THE BORO PARK VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS,

A NEW TWIST (Re: A Challah Bake, Issue 194)

With all the letters about the challah guide, I wanted to share this simple, ingenious method that my eighth grader invented for braiding round challahs.

Divide each dough into three parts. Roll each into long, thin strands — the longer, the nicer they come out. Connect the strands and braid them. Then stand the braid on its side and simply roll it up sideways!

I’m writing this to prevent a tragedy from occurring. This week, as I was driving home, a shopper/jitney bus pulled over to let off passengers on the side of the road. As the road was wide enough for another vehicle, I continued driving, intending to pass the bus. As always, I was driving carefully. (I have been driving for many years and baruch Hashem have never been in an accident.)

As I was just about to pass the stopped bus, a girl who looked to be about seven years old ran in front of the stopped bus, right in front of my car, and without looking, ran across the street. Chasdei Hashem, she was not hit by the bus or any car.

I was at first shocked that a child that age could do such a dangerous thing, but then I realized why it may have happened. Children know that they can cross in front of their school bus and that the traffic will stop in all directions for a school bus. I think that this child assumed that that is the case with any type of bus.

Please make sure your children know that traffic only stops for school buses, and even then, caution is necessary. Please make sure they know that traffic does not stop otherwise.

The Power of Teshuvah

BARUCH’S* FLIGHT landed at Miami International Airport. He collected his baggage and went out to meet his cousin, Martin, who was due to pick him up. It had been a while since they had seen each other, and Baruch was pleasantly surprised to see a yarmulka on his cousin’s head. Sadly, Martin’s experiences in the Holocaust had caused him to abandon shmiras hamitzvos Is Martin wearing that in my honor? Baruch wondered.

As they drove up to Martin’s home, Baruch noticed a mezuzah on the door. Once inside, he found siddurim and other signs of Jewish life. His curiosity got the better of him, and he asked Martin to share what had inspired him to change.

“Last year, on Rosh Hashanah afternoon,” Martin began, “I was facing the ocean from my oceanfront villa, when I noticed a group of frum Jews coming close to the water. I suddenly remembered a minhag I hadn’t thought about in ages — Tashlich! Something about the sight evoked old memories, and I was transported back to my childhood, when I would go along with my father to say Tashlich. My emotions overwhelmed me and I jumped out of my seat. I want to be part of this! I thought.

“I stood near the crowd, and one of the men noticed me and gave me a siddur. After I said Tashlich with them, an elderly man came over to me and asked if I had already heard shofar When I told him I hadn’t, he took out a shofar and began to blow. Before we parted, the man told me his name.

“I went home and shared my experience with my wife. She listened intently as I described every last detail — down to the way the man who blew shofar for me looked and what his name was.

“My wife couldn’t contain her disbelief. ‘That sounds like the baal tokei’a from my hometown!’ she said, and asked me to describe the man again. ‘Yes, it’s definitely him. He was a respected baal tokei’a… I thought he’d died in the war!’

“So it was that both my wife and I were brought back to the emotions of the Rosh Hashanah of our youth. And that was our first step back to Yiddishkeit....”

When this story was shared with Rav Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l, he responded that this episode was certainly orchestrated by Shamayim to prompt this couple to teshuvah.

The Power of Tefillah

RAV YITZCHAK ZILBERSTEIN, shlita, was once walking past the Zichron Moshe shtieblach in Yerushalayim when an elderly Russian man made him stop in his tracks. “A tzenter, a tzenter — a tenth man for our minyan!” he called out.

“When I lived in Russia, about 50 years ago, I once did the same thing. I stood outside, looking for Yidden who could complete our minyan. A wealthy man passed. I knew he was a busy person, but I begged, ‘Please, be the tenth man for our minyan!’

“He replied that he was in a rush, as he had to get to work in time. But I pressed him, and after wavering for a moment, the man decided to come inside. He was actually the seventh man. We still needed to find another three. The businessman sat on edge, waiting for the davening to start. It took twenty minutes. Finally, we began Shacharis.

“I could tell the businessman was anxious. The moment davening was over, he rushed to leave. Just then, several Yidden ran into shul. ‘Run for your life!’ they yelled when they saw the businessman.

“We learned that that very morning, the communists had assaulted his place of work and barbarically killed all the workers. It turned out that in the zechus of his mitzvah of tefillah, the businessman was saved!”

The Power of Tzedakah

One day, a woman came to his boutique art workshop and asked for art with a motif of a pasuk on the topic of tzedakah. Shlomo checked his collection and brought her a beautiful, colorful drawing.

The woman peered at it intently. Her face grew pale. It was obvious she was shocked.

“What’s the matter? Are you okay?” Shlomo asked.

After a moment, the woman silently rolled up her sleeve. She revealed her arm, which bore a tattoo with the number “A-199.” The “A” stood for Auschwitz, and this was the number the Nazis had imprinted on her skin forever.

“199 is my number!” the woman said emotionally. “And that’s the shape you drew the pasuk in.”

“May I ask why you wanted a painting with a pasuk on tzedakah?” Shlomo probed.

“Before the war, as a young girl,” she replied, “I had such pity on the poor people in our town. Every so often I would go around to the townspeople and collect money, which I would then distribute to the poor. I so badly wanted them to have food to eat! So, you see, this mitzvah is very precious to me....”

Shlomo listened and gently said, “You must be wondering why I chose to portray this pasuk in this shape.”

The woman nodded.

“Do you know what the numerical value of ‘tzedakah’ is?” he continued. “The word tzedakah adds up to 199.” Then he pointed out the touching connection. “When you arrived to Auschwitz, they tattooed onto your arm, ‘Tzedakah tatzil mimaves — tzedakah saves one from death!’”

An essential guide to tefillah b’tzibbur for women and teens

Part II: Rosh Hashanah, Crowning Hashem in a Crowd

You’ve probably heard the pasuk, “B’rov am hadras melech” (Mishlei 14:28). There is nothing like an overflowing crowd cheering on royalty. When we go to shul on Rosh Hashanah, we have the awesome privilege of crowning the King of Kings along with the crowd. It is an honor for Hashem and a special opportunity for us.

You make a difference. Each and every Yid joining together at the Divine coronation adds to the malchus and glory of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Each of us increases the grandeur as we in turn experience being part of Hashem’s treasured legion.

How can we make the most of this day in shul? * * * * *

One Rosh Hashanah, as the chassidim in Karlin began Shacharis with a harmonious “Hamelech”, the Rebbe, Reb Aharon Hagadol, zt”l, of Karlin, fainted.

He later explained that he had been reminded of the Gemara that describes Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai’s meeting with Aspasyanus. Rabbi Yochanan greeted the Roman general by referring to him with the title “Your Majesty.” This enraged Aspasyanus, who said, “First, I am not king. And, if I am king, why have you not come until now?”

Reb Aharon Hagadol said, “I thought to myself, if we address Hashem as ‘King,’ what will we answer to this very question: Why have you not come until now?”

Tefillos HAMELECH

With a special, awe-inspiring tune, Shacharis begins. The memorable notes climb until the climax: A resounding “Hamelech!”

We crown Hashem as King and declare our absolute submission as His servants. These moments instill such strong emotion and intensity that it’s worth making the effort to get to shul in time to be a part of it. Everyone stands from Hamelech until after Barchu.

While the Torah doesn’t specify the reason for blowing shofar, Chazal teach us these 10 reasons:

1. We are crowning Hashem.

2. It arouses us to teshuvah

3. It reminds us of Har Sinai, and our commitment to Torah.

4. It echoes the call of the nevi’im to follow the Torah’s ways.

5. It sounds like the war cry of the enemy at Churban Beis Hamikdash and thereby reminds us to daven for the geulah

6. It reminds us of Akeidas Yitzchak, when a ram was brought in place of Yitzchak Avinu, and arouses us to serve Hashem with mesirus nefesh, too.

7. It makes us tremble before Hashem.

8. It foreshadows the Yom Hadin when each of us will need to give a din v’cheshbon of our actions.

9. On a hopeful note, it hints at the shofar of Mashiach.

10. It reminds us of Techiyas Hameisim, when the shofar will be blown.

And, of course, the main thought we should have in mind as we hear the tekios is that we are being mekayem the mitzvah of shofar!

Shofar

Blowing shofar is the central mitzvah of Rosh Hashanah, as the Torah calls the Yom Tov “Yom Teruah.” The call of the shofar proclaims the majesty of Hashem. Each blast is meant to awaken us to teshuvah and bring us closer to Hakadosh Baruch Hu.

The shofar is blown after Krias HaTorah, before Mussaf, on both days of Rosh Hashanah — unless it is Shabbos. Over the course of the day, 100 blasts are blown.

On Rosh Hashanah, Hakadosh Baruch Hu sits on the kisei din — the seat of judgment. When we blow the shofar, He moves over to the kisei rachamim — the seat of mercy. While the shofar is sounded, the Satan is confused and cannot broach negative accusations against us. When Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos and we don’t blow the shofar, Shabbos herself is a meilitz yosher for us.

The baal tokei’a, who will blow the shofar, and the makri, who will call out which series of blasts to blow, stand at the bimah. After we say “Lamenatzei’ach” seven times, followed by “Min Hameitzar” pasuk by pasuk, the baal tokei’a recites the brachos. The makri calls out the blasts, and the shofar is blown. Mussaf begins immediately following.

Although only men are actually obligated to hear shofar, women have accepted upon themselves to do this mitzvah, too. Women, and even young children, should come to shul to hear the shofar. The shofar penetrates every Yid’s neshamah

Q: Is it preferable to hear the tekios with a minyan?

Even for men, there is no obligation to hear the shofar with a minyan, but it is preferable due to the principle of b’rov am hadras melech

For women, it depends a lot on the situation. Some shuls can accommodate a crowd of women and children, and others cannot. Bringing children who may make noise and disturb others is certainly not a good setup, as it is of essence for every single blast to be heard without distraction. Some communities have special blowing times for women and children.

Unesaneh Tokef

This is one of the most deeply emotional tefillos of the Yamim Noraim, recited during Mussaf on both days of Rosh Hashanah and on Yom Kippur. It was composed by Rav Amnon of Magentza about one thousand years ago. In it, we describe the kedushah and awesomeness of the day.

Rosh Hashanah is the Yom Hadin. As the malachim place every one of our actions on the scale in Shamayim, Hashem judges us and determines our future. With the malachim trembling in fear, we should certainly feel the gravity of this day, too.

In most shuls, this tefillah is recited slowly, with lots of fervor. On the other hand, some tzaddikim have the minhag to rush through it, as they want to retain a completely positive approach on this day, optimistic that all of us are being judged for the good.

Malchiyos, Zichronos, Shofros

The highlight of Mussaf of Rosh Hashanah are the brachos of Malchiyos, Zichronos, and Shofros, corresponding to three themes of the day. Each of these brachos cites ten pesukim on the topic, including three pesukim from Torah, three from Nevi’im, and three from Kesuvim, followed by one more pasuk from the Torah.

After saying each bracha, we stop to hear the shofar. (Your machzor should say “tekiah, shevarim, teruah, etc... indicating where you should stop and wait to hear the baal tokei’a blow.)

This happens both during the quiet Shemoneh Esrei and chazaras hashatz. When davening alone, one does not have the opportunity to hear these blasts, as the shofar during Mussaf is only blown with a minyan.

During chazaras hashatz, after each time the shofar is blown, we say Hayom Haras Olam and Areshes Sefaseinu. On Shabbos, when we don’t blow the shofar, the tefillos are the same, except that we omit Areshes Sefaseinu.

Q: I’m in the middle of davening Shemoneh Esrei, and I already finished the pesukim of Malchiyos. Am I allowed to sit down as I wait for the baal tokei’a to blow the shofar?

Yes, it is okay to sit down as you wait, but it is proper to stand up again when the shofar is blown.

If someone davens slowly and has not yet completed the pesukim and bracha when the shofar is blown, he should stop and listen silently. Then, he should continue where he left off.

Rosh Hashanah is Hakadosh Baruch

Hu’s coronation day, because on this day, Adam Harishon was created. With a person in this world to recognize the Creator, Hashem was crowned as King.

We speak of our gratitude for the special relationship we have with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and end off with a fervent tefillah for the day when all nations of the world will recognize that Hashem created and continues to rule the entire universe.

ZICHRONOS

On this day, Hashem remembers every action we have done — both good and bad. But as the ultimate baal harachamim, Hashem also recalls everything that has happened over the course of history, including the deeds of our ancestors. We hope that this zechus avos will assist in bringing us to positive judgment.

SHOFROS

The blasts of the shofar evoke the coronation of a king and announce the king’s arrival. Thus, through the shofar we accomplish the first two fundamentals — Malchiyos and Zichronos.

The shofar also reminds us of the two greatest events in Klal Yisroel’s history — Matan Torah and the coming of Mashiach.

Q: I made sure to come to shul early so I could find a seat. Baruch Hashem, I found a seat near the aisle that wasn’t right under the air conditioner. Just as davening began, a woman walked in. I watched her look around for a seat, but there was none. Was I mechuyav to stand up so she could sit?

While it may be the right thing to do, one cannot be expected to give up a seat after devoting much effort to come to shul early. Standing for several hours is quite a big deal!

Very often, the shul is crowded at the beginning of a tefillah and thins out as the davening goes on. Use your judgment; if there is a good chance you’ll be able to find another seat soon, or if you know the woman looking for a seat is only here for a short while, you may feel more able to give her your seat.

It’s worthwhile for any girl or woman who plans to be in shul to remember to purchase a seat before Yom Tov. This can avoid much aggravation and discomfort.

Many sticky situations arise from shul-seating issues. Keep in mind that one never knows whether it will be these tests in bein adam l’chaveiro that will ultimately bring about the sweetest judgment for the new year!

Avinu Malkeinu

Hakadosh Baruch Hu is our loving Father, and at the same time, our awe-inspiring King. We express this unique dual relationship through the tefillah of Avinu Malkeinu — Our Father, Our King.

As a son, we expect a loving, kind, forgiving relationship. Yet as a servant, we remind ourselves to be in awe of Hashem’s majesty and remember that He can do anything. Certainly, our Father wants the best for His child — and it is all in His royal ability.

2. Where in Mussaf of Rosh Hashanah is there a hint to the Aseres Hadibros?

Although it may be more natural to focus on the second part of each line as it changes to new requests, it is worthwhile to invest an extra bit of concentration on the words “Avinu Malkeinu,” and feel the Fatherly love and Kingly capabilities.

This tefillah can be traced back to the days of Rabbi Akiva. There was a terrible drought and Rabbi Akiva implored, “Avinu Malkeinu, we have no King but You. Avinu Malkeinu, for Your sake, have rachmanus on us!” Immediately, rain began to fall. This tefillah was expanded into the full-length tefillah that we recite today.

Adams Warns of “Financial Tsunami” for New York City

Hoping that the federal government and New York State will throw him a lifeline, Mayor Eric Adams spoke grimly of a new reality ahead – 15% budget cuts that will impact every city agency in the coming months.

Speaking on September 10 on a PIX11 political program, Adams warned that the ongoing migrant crisis could potentially destroy New York City, which is facing $12 billion in expenses related to the newcomers.

“I have to be honest with New Yorkers with what we’re about to experience, a financial tsunami that I don’t think this city has ever experienced,” said Adams.

The mayor warned that the city cannot bear the responsibility of taking in 10,000 new migrants each month, with the flood of newcomers showing no signs of abating. Currently, there isn’t a single service in the city that will be spared drastic financial cuts, said Adams.

Asked if allocations to emergency personnel would be affected, Adams responded, “Everything is on the table now,” pointing to sanitation, police, education and libraries as examples of other vital city-funded services that are facing severe cuts.

The mayor took both the federal and state governments to task, saying that much more could be done to help New York City shoulder the responsibility of taking in migrants. The federal government has the power to control the nation’s borders more responsibly, said Adams, who criticized Governor Kathy Hochul for not allowing New York City to send migrants to other counties within the state. Adams also observed that even the promise of $1 billion in additional state funding would do little to stave off a $12 billion deficit, a difficult reality that will be shouldered by residents of the five boroughs.

“Right now, New York City is carrying the weight of a national problem with little or no help,” said Adams.

History Made as Lab-Grown Chicken Receives Kashrus Certification

Lab-grown poultry made out of cultivated cells from chicken eggs have been officially certified by the Orthodox Union, the first time that a cultivated chicken product has ever been approved as fully meeting kashrus standards.

Developed by Israeli startup SuperMeat, the cultivated chicken cell line was closely inspected by two teams of highly regarded rabbanim that included Rav Hershel Schachter, Rav Asher Weiss and Rav Yosef Zvi Rimon. The product is created by growing stem cells harvested from eggs, which are placed

in fermentation tanks and fed a growth serum. The cells grow quickly into meat tissue just as they would as part of a chicken’s body.

According to The Times of Israel, the trickiest part of making the product kosher was finding a way to acquire cells that did not come from a living animal, since according to halacha, all meat products must come from a properly shechted animal.

“Aligning our technology with kosher dietary laws is pivotal,” said Savir.

“This collaboration aims to bridge the gap between scientific understanding and halachic adjudication, setting unprecedented standards in the cultivated meat industry,” added Rabbi Genack.

Merchandise Kept in Locked Cases at Local Target Store to Prevent Shoplifting

Allow some extra time for your shopping if you plan on visiting the 18th Avenue Target store, with significant amounts of merchandise being kept under lock and key as a theft prevention measure.

BoroPark24 reported that the store, located on 64th Street on the outskirts of both Boro Park and Bensonhurst, has been protecting entire aisles of merchandise, with even low cost basics like shampoo and moisturizer placed in secured glass cabinets. Customers who want to purchase those items are required to call an employee for assistance, a process that can often take time. One store shopper said that they had been waiting ten minutes for a Target associate to arrive. “It’s a truly frustrating experience,” they said.

A store employee said that an increase in shoplifting left Target resorting to drastic measures to safeguard its inventory. And while currently only some aisles have been put behind glass, the writing is on the wall for the rest of the store.

“Eventually, everything will be locked up,” said the employee.

Ongoing War on Rats Continues, With New Commercial Trash Laws Taking Effect

If you own a business with five or more locations, say goodbye to trash bags and hello to lidded garbage cans.

A new rule by the New York City Department of Sanitation requires all trash set out by chain stores to be placed in rigid containers with secure covers. The requirement went into effect on September 5, and while warnings are being issued to violators at this time, fines will go into effect when the grace period ends on October 1. The new policy applies not only to businesses with the same name, but also to those under common ownership, and to certain franchises.

The new requirement comes just days after the city began fining food-related businesses that put their trash out in lidless receptacles. The sanitation department has been asking city residents to report violations.

Riva gets the principal involved in the conflict between Chevi and Fraidy.

The meeting, as Lani had predicted, was accomplishing nothing except putting Chevi in a bad mood.

Mrs. Becker had started off friendly enough. She’d smiled and asked Chevi, “How are things in fourth grade?” then asked her if she enjoyed school and if she had friends and if there was anything she wanted to say or ask. Chevi responded with curt, one-word answers. Lani noticed that the principal provided several opportunities for Chevi to bring up the issue they were there to discuss on her own, but when Chevi sidestepped each one, she grew more direct.

“Tell me what’s happening between you and Fraidy.”

“Nothing’s happening.”

They continued along that vein until Mrs. Becker gave up on open-ended questions and proceeded to accusations.

“Chevi, we know you’ve been acting mean to Fraidy. We know exactly what’s going on. There’s no point trying to deny it. We’re here today because we’re

putting an end to this behavior. Do you understand?”

It took all of Lani’s self-control to refrain from erupting. She couldn’t stand the way the principal used the word we, grouping her in, as though Lani herself was part of this suffocating prosecution. “Um…” she tried interrupting.

Mrs. Becker silenced her with a stern glance.

Lani sat back rigidly. The principal’s office — neat and spacious, with its cheerful pictures on the wall — felt like a courtroom. It was like they’d sat Chevi into the defendant’s seat, and Lani urgently needed Chevi to realize that she, her mother, would serve as her counsel. Even if Chevi had started up with Fraidy, was this the way to deal with the issue? To crush her like this?

Besides, how could the principal be so sure? What was her proof?

“Hmm?” Mrs. Becker prodded.

Chevi’s face was inscrutable. “I’m not acting mean,” she said drily.

Chevi didn’t make a sound.

“I take that as a yes,” Mrs. Becker said crisply. Then she softened her voice. “And Chevi, if anything ever bothers you, just tell one of us. Me, Mrs. Shiffer, Miss Katz, your mother… We’re here to help you. You can always talk to us, even if you think it’s something small and stupid. Okay?”

She dismissed Chevi, sending her off to join her classmates for lunch. Then she turned to Lani and Mrs. Shiffer. “I believe she got the message, and hopefully, that’ll be enough. It was important for all of us to sit here together, it made her realize how seriously we’re all taking this. I’ll keep an eye on the girls over the next few days, and Mrs. Shiffer, Mrs. Eisdorf, if you sense anything concerning going on, please let me know right away. We don’t want anyone going around in pain, not Fraidy and not Chevi, either.”

She turned to Lani. “She’s a great girl, your daughter. None of us thinks any less of her because of this story. These kinds of things happen, it could be triggered by a hundred different reasons. The main thing is to keep our eyes and ears open, pick up the cues, investigate behavior that’s out of the ordinary.” She paused. “Is there anything you want to add?”

“Yes,” Lani said.

“Okay, let’s hear.”

“Nobody witnessed any of the… fighting… happen. I’m not saying that it did or didn’t, there’s no way to verify that. All I’m saying is, we’re dealing with nine-year-olds. Let’s not forget that. And also…” She settled her gaze on the row of eighth grade graduation pictures hanging behind the principal’s desk. “Chevi’s putting up with some stress at home now. I hope… I mean, we need to be gentle with her. She’s a fragile kid.”

Nobody had witnessed any of the “fighting” happen.

Until a few hours later.

Really, the whole thing had been a terrible idea from the first minute. Lani and Riva had spoken about doing an anniversary skit several times, but the plan had been vague and nobody ever sat down to actually write a script. Both of them kind of forgot about it, and Lani assumed they’d just dropped the idea.

The whole anniversary party gave Lani a migraine. She’d nearly fainted when Riva had told her the cost of renting SpecTac — after she’d gone ahead and given a deposit. They were only two siblings, and she didn’t know about Riva, but her family wasn’t exactly rolling in the dough. To think how many hours of Maddie’s help this money could’ve covered. Never mind how many tiles.

But now that the venue had been booked, they could have a nice party without any skits, and that would be that.

But when Malky and Shana heard about the plan for a skit, they’d gotten all excited and decided to make it happen. They grilled Lani for stories of her childhood and sat down to write the script on their own. Then they’d gone ahead and scheduled a practice session with all the cousins who would be part of it, which was basically the two of them, Chevi, and Fraidy Stroh.

The session was scheduled to take place that Monday afternoon, in the bare dining room of the Eisdorfs’ semi-built house.

“Maybe push it off for next week,” Lani tried lamely, when her girls arrived home from school. “It’s so, um, wet outside. It rained all day, everyone’s tired. I really want you girls to have an early night.”

“We can’t push it off,” Malky argued. “We’re running out of time.”

Lani was surprised that Fraidy showed up at all. She’d been sure her niece simply wouldn’t come. She hadn’t spoken to Riva since that horrible phone call on Friday, so whatever arrangements the girls had made, neither Lani nor Riva had been involved. Now, holding the basement door open, she watched apprehensively as the girls tiptoed up the raw, dusty stairs.

“Let me know if you need any help,” she offered before closing the door.

For a few minutes, she idled away her time, hanging up jackets and briefcases in the tiny entrance closet and walking around restlessly. She couldn’t help it, she was nervous about what was happening upstairs. How would Chevi act in Fraidy’s presence after the mussar shmuess she’d gotten from Mrs. Becker that morning?

She didn’t have to wait long.

Barely ten minutes had passed when she heard footsteps coming down the stairs. Briskly, she walked over to the door and opened it a crack. Chevi’s voice echoed in the empty space. “And you and Tzippy can make your own skit. I’m sure it’s going to be ad-d-d-dooooorable. B-b-b-bubby M-m-m-m-miller will l-l-l-l-love it.”

Lani shut the door and leaned back faintly.

Nobody witnessed any of the fighting happen.

She stumbled over to the table and sank into a chair, planting her forehead in her palm.

Chevi… Why?

She heard the door open and close. Chevi walked right past her, and Lani heard her lock herself in the bathroom.

She hesitated. She could confront her, but what would she say? She needed a clear head to deal with this, and right now, her head was filled with a foggy heaviness, little explosions going off and bringing on shooting pain.

And yet, over the tumult, one clear thought rang boldly.

This is all Riva’s fault.

It was strange to meet the Kleenup staff in a different setting, outside of the office walls, all elegantly dressed and made up.

“I BELIEVE SHE GOT THE MESSAGE, AND HOPEFULLY, THAT’LL BE ENOUGH”

It was also strange to come to a Bar Mitzvah where the only person you knew was the boy’s father, on the other side of the mechitza. More so when that boy’s father was the big boss, Mr. Gabioff.

It was a sefirah Bar Mitzvah, so there was no music. The only sounds were a mix of conversation and clinking flatware.

“I’m afraid we’re too early,” Miriam said as they clustered near the doors. “They didn’t serve the main course yet.”

“I think we could say our mazel tovs now, stick around a bit, and then leave, no?” Riva asked. “Do we have to sit down for dessert?”

“That’s his wife over there,” Shoshi said, motioning with her head to a group of women clustered next to one of the tables.

They stood around, debating if they should go over to her then or wait for the dessert reception to start. Riva noted that Shuli didn’t contribute her opinion. She wasn’t wearing a snobby expression. To Riva’s amazement, Shuli looked downright shy.

“Let’s just do it,” Chaya urged. She didn’t look shy; she was just anxious to return home and dismiss her babysitter. Like the rest of them.

But before they could make up their minds, they heard someone banging on the table on the men’s side, quieting down the guests as the Bar Mitzvah boy took the mic to say his pshetl. They’d have to wait now.

Riva clasped her evening bag, quietly observing the women and girls scrambling for places near the mechitzah. She recognized some of Mr. Gabioff’s daughters. They looked so happy, their faces flushed with excitement, and Riva couldn’t help being struck by how normal they appeared.

What kind of relationship did they have with their father? Did they know how his staff felt about him? Did they also suffer from his personality? Or was he a different person outside of his business? Over the years, Riva had observed many instances in which Mr. Gabioff had displayed sincere kindness. She’d witnessed him making generous donations to various causes. She’d followed along when he’d cared for a sick friend once, constantly visiting him and inquiring how he could help. He’d been heartbroken when that friend passed away, and Riva recognized that in order to be heartbroken, you had to have a heart.

He had a heart. A good one, probably. He knew how to care, he knew how to rejoice—he was celebrating his son’s Bar Mitzvah tonight, surely his heart was swelling with joy. But at work, it was as though his heart was drowned in smog, so that his staff couldn’t detect that it existed at all.

Loud singing cut the Bar Mitzvah boy’s speech short.

“I think we can try to catch her now,” Adina said. They inched closer to the crowd near the mechitza until they reached Mrs. Gabioff.

“So nice of all of you to come!” she exclaimed. “Thank you, thank you!”

The singing was a blessing; it excused the need for small talk. Riva and her coworkers smiled and murmured appropriate well-wishes, and as soon as another guest approached, they stepped back and let out a breath of relief.

“Okay, that wasn’t so bad,” Miriam voted as they exited to the lobby.

“Yeah, we survived,” Shoshi said dolefully. “I can totally handle the boss when he makes a simcha.”

They left the hall together, and after a few blocks, Shoshi and Adina said good night and turned into a side street. At the next corner, Miriam parted from them, and two blocks later, Chaya. Riva found herself walking alone with Shuli Nieder.

Shuli hadn’t spoken much all night. Now, when it was just the two of them, she seemed to ease out of a certain stiffness that had surrounded her until then. Weeks ago, Riva would’ve viewed that stiffness as a desire to keep an aloof distance from all of them. But that aloofness, she realized, didn’t stem from arrogance. It stemmed from insecurity, from intimidation. And her weapon to deal with those uncomfortable feelings was to draw into herself, and, in a more pressuring environment such as in the office, to overcompensate, to play Miss Smart and Confident.

What a pain that must be.

Shuli started talking. “I discussed your idea with my mother, about the breakfasts,” she said. “She absolutely loved it.”

“Oh, so nice!”

“Did you talk to your sister about it? Does she want to do it?”

“Uh, I didn’t… I mean, not yet.”

“Okay. So can you talk to her and let me know if she’s interested? If she is, I’ll tell my mother to call her and they can figure out how to work it.”

This time it was Riva who was overcome by stiffness. She pictured herself calling Lani and offering her this great opportunity, a way to boost her income in a really big way.

Then she pictured Fraidy’s face when she’d returned from the “practice” session at the Eisdorfs. White, tear-streaked, shuttered.

“I think,” she told Shuli, “it’s better if your mother calls her directly.”

Arancini are Italian rice balls that are breaded and deep fried. The addition of pastrami in this recipe results in a dish that is elegant, festive and just divine.

INGREDIENTS

1 cup arborio rice

1 T. oil

1 small onion, chopped

4 cloves garlic, crushed

6 oz. pastrami

2 cups chicken stock (soup)

1 egg

1 cup of seasoned breadcrumbs

DIRECTIONS

1. Saute the onion on medium heat for five minutes, along with a pinch of salt.

2. Add the crushed garlic and saute an additional minute.

3. Add the pastrami and cook, mixing occasionally for another couple of minutes.

4. Add the rice and toast for one minute.

5. Reduce the heat to medium-low. Add 1 cup of the chicken stock and cook, stirring occasionally until the liquid is absorbed.

6. Gradually add the rest of the stock until rice is cooked through but still has a bit of a bite. Allow the rice to cool.

7. Whisk the egg and mix it into the rice.

8. Cover and refrigerate for one hour.

9. Place the breadcrumbs in a shallow bowl. (I like to make my own seasoned breadcrumbs by adding some salt, garlic powder and oregano to plain corn flake crumbs.)

10. Form the rice into balls and roll in the crumbs to coat.

11. Heat oil in a pot and deep fry the rice balls until golden.

12. Transfer to a cooling rack or pan lined with paper towels.

13. Serve with marinara or maple sriracha (mayo, maple syrup and sriracha) if desired.

ROASTED TOMATO GALETTES

These mini gems boast a flaky crust that comes together in mere seconds. Paired with garlic roasted cherry tomatoes, the final combination is fabulous.

GALETTE DOUGH

1 ¼ cups Wondermills high gluten flour

½ tsp sea salt

1 tsp. sugar

1 stick margarine, cold and cubed

¼ cup ice cold water (refrigerated is also fine)

CHERRY TOMATO FILLING

12 oz. cherry tomatoes, on the vine

6 cloves garlic, crushed Salt and pepper, to taste

½ tsp dried basil

Drizzle of olive oil

GARLIC MAYO

4 cloves garlic, crushed

¼ cup mayonnaise

EGG WASH

1 egg

1 T. almond milk (optional)

DIRECTIONS

1. Place the flour, salt and sugar in a food processor fitted with an S blade. Pulse to combine.

2. Add the cubed margarine and cold water and process until the dough is crumbly but begins to stick together. This will take just a few seconds.

3. Remove the dough from the food processor and form into a flat disc. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour.

4. Meanwhile, prepare the cherry tomato filling. Preheat the oven to 425°.

5. Rinse and halve the cherry tomatoes and place on a cookie sheet along with the crushed garlic.

6. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and dried basil to taste. Drizzle with olive oil. Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside.

7. Prepare your egg wash by mixing the egg and almond milk in a bowl.

8. In a separate bowl combine the mayonnaise and crushed garlic.

9. Preheat the oven to 400°.

10. Once the dough has chilled, remove from the refrigerator. Cut the dough into 8-12 pieces, depending on whether you want them small or medium.

11. On a floured surface, roll each piece into a roughly round shape. Place on a parchment lined baking sheet.

12. Smear a thin layer of garlic mayonnaise onto the entire surface.

13. Top with one tablespoon of roasted tomatoes in the center of each dough.

14. Fold the edges over the filling and pinch closed.

15. Gently brush the egg wash over the top of the dough.

16. Bake for 30-35 minutes until the crust is golden.

ACORN SQUASH SALAD STACKS

These attractive and tasty salad stacks work equally well as starters or sides. They are impressive and sure to please either way.

INGREDIENTS

1 acorn squash

Salt and pepper to taste

3 cups cubed butternut squash

8 oz. pearl onions, halved

½ tsp. dried rosemary

4 oz. salad greens

Handful honey glazed pecans

3 T. tahini

1 T. sesame oil

Black and white sesame seeds, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 400°.

2. Line two 9x13 pans with parchment paper.

3. Rinse the acorn squash and cut into ¼” slices.

4. With a knife, scrape off the seeds from the inner ring of each slice. Place into one of the pans and sprinkle with salt, pepper and a generous drizzle of olive oil.

5. In a separate pan, toss the cubed butternut squash with the halved pearl onions, salt, pepper and rosemary. Drizzle with olive oil.

6. Bake for approximately one hour until soft on the inside and caramelized on the outside. Check the acorn squash after 40 minutes.

7. In a bowl, combine the tahini and sesame oil.

8. To assemble, place an acorn squash ring in the center of an appetizer plate. Toss the lettuce with the butternut squash, onions and candied pecans. Pile those into the center of the acorn squash.

9. Drizzle with tahini and sprinkle with sesame seeds.

A centerpiece of the Rosh Hashana davening is the tefillah of Unesaneh Tokef –literally, “Let us relate.”

In the immortal words of Rabbi Amnon of Mainz, composed about a thousand years ago, the tefillah relates the “power and holiness” of the day: Hashem’s exalted Kingship, His exact accounting, and the awesomeness of His judgment.

The prayer climaxes with the prescription for salvation: Teshuvah, tefillah and tzedaka annul the evil of the decree!

Aroused by the wrenching prayer, we are swept forward toward repentance.

Let us relate the power and the holiness of this day.

WE MEET AGAIN

months ago, someone gave me a gift. It was a book — The Grandeur of the Maggid, by Rabbi Paysach J. Krohn. As with all the other volumes in the series, it was full of great stories.

I was particularly wowed by one story about someone who was vacationing with his family far from home and wronged a stranger whose name he didn’t know. For years, he thought about the encounter every time the Yamim Noraim approached. He wanted to ask mechilah, but had no way to discover the person’s identity.

Years later, following a series of incredible events, he met that stranger again and grabbed the opportunity to ask him for mechilah. The story quoted the Chovos Halevavos, Shaar Hateshuvah, stating that if a person really wants to do teshuvah, “yazmin haBorei hiskabtzam” — Hashem will cause the two people to meet in order that he can ask forgiveness.

I was amazed by the story and deeply moved by the idea that Hashem will help us achieve teshuvah — and that it still happens to regular people today.

It reminded me of an incident that happened when I was in high school.

When I was in tenth grade, I did something that embarrassed one of my teachers. To be fair, I didn’t do it to embarrass her. I just behaved thoughtlessly, and she was embarrassed in front of the whole class. Even at the time, I felt terrible about it. Over the years, the memory of that incident would pop into my head from time to time, and every time I remembered it, I cringed and blushed.

I really wanted to ask for forgiveness, and as an adult, I even tried reaching this teacher several times, but I never succeeded. Her number wasn’t listed, I didn’t know her first name, and other excuses. But now, reading the story in Rabbi Krohn’s book, I said a short tefillah that Hashem should help me meet that teacher again, so I could ask her mechilah, just as it happened in the story.

A few days later I was putting my kids to bed. The landline rang, and I ignored it — no one im-

portant ever calls me on the landline, and anyway, I was in middle of doing bedtime. But my son answered it.

“Maaaaa! There’s someone on the phone for yoooooou!”

“I can’t talk to them now,” I called back. A moment later he appeared upstairs, holding out the phone. “But it’s for you!”

“Who is it?”

“The caller ID doesn’t say the name, only the number.” He read it to me. I didn’t recognize it.

I took the phone from him. “Hello?”

“Hello,” said a woman with a distinct accent. “This is Mrs. Jacobman calling.”

Instantly, I knew who she was. My tenth grade teacher!

“Are you Malky King?” she asked.

“No,” I said, “I’m Esther King — you must mean my mother-in-law.”

“Oh dear, that’s who I’m trying to reach.”

“No problem,” I said. “I’ll give you her number. But first, let me tell you why you called me.”

That confused her — how would I know why she had called me?

“Do you remember me? I was in your class in tenth grade…”

I told her the story. She didn’t remember it, but she graciously granted me mechilah. I told her the story I read in the Maggid book and how I had davened that Hashem should send me the opportunity to ask her forgiveness. Yazmin haBorei hiskabtzam. The words of the Chovos Halevavos had come true for me, too.

After all those years, I finally made things right. Thank you, Hashem, for the gift of teshuvah

OVER THE YEARS, THE MEMORY OF THAT INCIDENT WOULD POP INTO MY HEAD FROM TIME TO TIME, AND EVERY TIME I REMEMBERED IT, I CRINGED AND BLUSHED

A PRAYER AND A PROMISE

“ZELDY!”

My voice rose to a feverish octave and the noise finally, blessedly stopped.

The clatter of banging toys and harsh voices abated to let a furious silence fill the cluttered room. I grabbed onto the quiet…

But it didn’t last. In a few seconds, Zeldy was at it again.

I lost it. “Enough! Can’t you just behave for once?”

The angry lava exploded, leaving behind a confused girl slinking to her room in the wake of hundreds of arguments before.

I saw blackness, despair.

The hiss of burning onions from the kitchen mocked me. So did the mighty slam of her bedroom door. Even the heavens were crying with me, rain pounding mercilessly on the window panes.

She had been a notoriously difficult toddler, my Zeldy; I remember her, red-cheeked and thrashing on the blue slide in the park, refusing to give another child a turn. I remember how she talked and talked, nonstop, her loud voice grating and shrill.

A siren wailed as an ambulance rushed past.

As she matured, so did her anxiety, pushing away any potential friends. She was a loner, on the sidelines, broody and irritable. Scholastically smart but not socially savvy, she never had friends in the country, classroom or our cul-de-

sac. We tried everything — pizza trips, sensory toys, showering her with love and acceptance. Recently we’d even started therapy, burning a growing hole in our time and energy as we gave and gave… but she didn’t seem to be filling up.

My newborn’s cries pierced my reverie. My back hurt. I felt myself being split into fragmented parts; pulled in all directions with the needs of my husband and our children, with Zeldy swallowing the lion’s share of my time. I felt the pain burn inside me, cloaked in worry. Where to go from here, Eibershter? Would my daughter be shunned forever?

Iridescent stars winked at me as I stepped into the crisp country air. The world was a black canvas, anticipating its paint by the glorious brush of sunrise. I looked out into the dark expanse, shadows and flickers playing with the force of night. The squeal of a cat in the distance, the drum of my loyal heart; it was the music of life itself.

I sat gingerly on the damp grass. It needs a cut, a renewal, I thought.

“Eibershter!” I suddenly cried, my broken voice resonating as my soul came forth. “I can’t shoulder this on my own anymore.” The tears were fast and furious now, years of struggle, pain and crushed hopes whispered into His waiting ear. “Help me, Tatte, with my Zeldy!”

The silence was deafening; it was only me and Him on the planet. I could feel myself being enveloped in the security of a Father’s love. In that flash, He unsheathed myriads of stars, glittering shards of hope on my desolate wilderness.

I finally stood up, straightened my tichel and lifted my hands, releasing the strain embedded deep in them. Lifting my hands up to the sparkling sky, I threw up all my angst and fear, baring my heart until I was floating, light as a feather, unshackled from the chains that had threatened to choke me. Freedom beckoned with dawn’s birth.

It was then I made a newfound resolution. I had always prided myself on managing to daven Birchas Hashachar every morning, despite my many responsibilities. Yet now I wanted to push myself past my comfort zone

“I’m going to daven a feste Shacharis tomorrow,” I said aloud.

Punching different numbers into my alarm clock felt strange. I fell into a dreamless sleep.

In the morning, I rubbed my eyes blearily. I had an overpowering urge to just go back to sleep, to allow the marvelous slumber to lull me back into its warm, thick hug.

Then a surge of energy charged through me. I couldn’t lose this drive, not now, not when I needed it most. Ravens squawked vociferously as the fast disappearing moon whisked the gloom away. The house felt strangely still, hums and whirrs vibrating through the empty space.

“

Hodu laShem…” I began to daven, really daven, in a lengthy melody of fraught supplication, boundless praise and heartfelt gratitude. My focus heightened and dropped, but I worked valiantly to remain deep in our conversation. As the sun warmed the nape of my neck, I felt liberated, at peace.

The next morning, I joined the birds for our daily singing as the wind whistled through our pine trees. The following day followed suit, and the next. It became part of me as I felt my connection deepen, become more natural and flowing. My siddur became my best friend, my shield from the harsh world.

In addition, we continued therapy with Zeldy, coaxing, schlepping and paying. Life carried on its hectic dance. Yet throughout it all, my davening continued. And as the seasons changed,

we noticed that Zeldy had transformed. She was glowing, in and out, finding herself with a new, eidel confidence that attracted the friends she had always dreamed of. Her posture was calm and relaxed; a sunny smile rested on her face in place of the previous perpetual frown.

When the therapist told us that Zeldy had progressed beautifully and no longer needed her services, I was

not even surprised. I felt the Eibershter’s love, and whispered Mizmor L’sodah with deep emotion. Zeldy was at the top of her class; her teacher had even asked her to reach out and befriend some weaker girls. Our family was so much more peaceful and cohesive. It was nothing short of miraculous, an impossible fairy-tale.

Of course, my morning davening continued.

Summer came, sun drenched, vivid and joyful. I loved seeing the blinding sun rays that would peek at us between the dense branches of our evergreen. It reminded me of the blessing of life, rebirth and answered prayers.

When we arrived to the country that summer, my friends were astounded at the change in Zeldy. “What did you do?” they asked, as they watched her dash to help and then run off to the pool with a circle of friends.

I looked at her, the glitter in her blue eyes, sapphire blue like the sea. The gray storms had shifted and the gold sand glistened in welcome as the tide uncovered a striking future.

“Come on,” my neighbor cajoled me, her snood askew. “Tell me what you did.” There was a hint of despondency in her voice.

And so, there, under a bright blue sky, puffy white clouds hovering, I told her my secret.

When my baby was born, we were shocked to find out that he had serious medical issues. He looked so perfect. How could this beautiful baby have major defects lurking in his tiny body?

When he was a year old, he needed a delicate, invasive surgery that would have long-term ramifications on his overall health. Despite the fear and anxiety that overshadowed my life, I had to juggle the care of my other children at home while my baby was hospitalized for long periods. Strengthening our emunah and spending time davening was what gave us the ability to carry on.

The tziyun of the Ribnitzer Rebbe, zy”a, in Monsey is known as a place where yeshuos come to fruition. My husband Elazar davened there often. The hours he spent there gave him a boost of chizuk. The day before the pivotal surgery found Elazar once again at the Rebbe’s kever, davening for our precious baby to merit a complete recovery.

Usually, Elazar is too wrapped up in his own tefillos to notice those around him. Many people come with serious requests, and cry-

ing mispallelim are the norm. Yet that day, one yungerman caught his eye. He stood to the side, swaying and sobbing, clearly in turmoil. Elazar hesitated, wondering if he should approach him and ask if he was okay. Would the man appreciate his concern, or be upset at the invasion of his privacy?

He didn’t have to think too long, because the man came over to him.

“Maybe you can help me,” he said, his eyes filled with anguish. “My wife and I have no children. We recently came here from Eretz Yisroel. We left everything — our families, a job, everything — to come here for help. We’re living in Lakewood now, but we’re struggling. We have no family to support us through this time, no jobs, no money. It’s an effort to get through each day.”

He related how they were already mired in debt, and that they’d had to borrow money for their plane tickets. Yet they were willing to go through all this upheaval if only they would merit to one day hold a baby in their arms.

Elazar was overcome. Here he was, with a baby facing a medical crisis, on the eve of a surgery that would determine our child’s future health. As he stood face to face with a man who had given up everything in the

hope that he would one day become a father, he knew that a zechus to help his son had just fallen right into his lap.

Perhaps this mitzvah would protect our baby as he lay under the surgeon’s knife.

Elazar reached into his pocket, pulled out his wallet, and handed the man his debit card.

“Use this card to withdraw money for yourself,” he said. The man took a picture of the card so he would have the information he needed, then handed the card back to Elazar. He took down the man’s phone number and showered him with brachos for success.

When both men parted, it was with a newfound sense of hope and optimism for the future.

The surgery was the next day.

I don’t wish on anyone the sheer agony of parting with our precious baby as he was wheeled into the cold, sterile operating room. We knew that the tefillos of family members and friends would accompany him throughout the long hours of surgery, and that encouraged us. Still, the empty hours until we would learn the surgery’s outcome stretched before us endlessly.

We sat in the waiting room, davening and pleading that our baby be restored to us in perfect health. At some point during the surgery, my husband recalled the yungerman he had met the day before at the Ribnitzer’s tziyun. He decided to call him and find out how he was doing.

The conversation that followed was completely unexpected.

“Mizmor l’sodah!” the man cried. He went on to relate that the picture he had snapped of the debit card was missing the bottom row of numbers, and that he couldn’t withdraw the money without that information. “I can’t believe you’re calling now! I need the money so badly; I traveled from Lakewood to Monsey again, so I could daven at the Ribnitzer Rebbe’s kever for a yeshuah. And then — you called!”

Baruch Hashem, my baby’s surgery was a success. Today, he is a happy, well-adjusted child who is thriving and blossoming in all ways. His smile melts our hearts countless times a day, especially when we think of what could have been.

Elazar still keeps tabs on the yungerman he met that fateful day. We may have helped him by giving him tzedakah, but we firmly believe that the opportunity he gave us to help him was what tipped the scales in our baby’s favor.

Chazal say that more than the baal habayis does for the poor person, the poor person does for the baal habayis. If you take a peek into my home and see an adorable toddler at play, you’ll see that it’s true.

It had my name on it. So who would believe me?

Writing is different from other jobs or careers. The entire process happens in your mind, and there’s no clear-cut protocol. There’s no process to follow, no computer system to learn. It’s only you and your thoughts. It’s also kind of frightening to know that thousands of people read what you wrote in some makeshift office in a corner of your apartment. But after endless rounds of edits and revisions, when a piece is finally published, it’s extremely satisfying.

The only time it’s not satisfying or exciting is if it’s unexpected.

The first inkling I had that something was wrong was when I was unpacking some beets from my Pesach grocery order. The phone rang — it was an old coworker who hardly kept in touch, calling to congratulate me on being published in one of the Pesach story supplements of a popular nationwide magazine.

I had no idea what she was talking about. She promised me that she had just finished reading a story written by me. As far as I knew, I had nothing published in that magazine, and certainly not in the story supplement. I asked her to read me the first paragraph, and yes, I recognized the story as mine.

publishing date, they’ll ask questions, request edits and basically keep you involved in the process. But I had submitted the story months before and had never gotten any response from the editor. I had understood that it wasn’t accepted, and moved on. It was a little unusual that I hadn’t received any response at all, but that sometimes happens when you don’t follow up often enough or don’t have a strong relationship with the editor.

Even though the article has my name on it, I wish you knew that I didn’t write those words.

I imagined having a conversation with all the readers: “This was a mistake! I had never meant for it to be published under my name, and maybe not published at all. This doesn’t represent who I am, and magazine editors have done something terrible to me!”

There was actually a reason I hadn’t followed up. I myself wasn’t sure how I felt about the story. It was about a delicate topic, and although in recent years there have been many articles in the mainstream publications about it, at the time it felt like a pioneering piece. It was certainly more gutsy than anything I had published before. I had decided that if it was accepted for publication, I would make a decision then whether to go ahead, and if I did, I would publish it under a pseudonym. Although I stood by what I had written, I didn’t trust the public readership to have a thoughtful, nuanced reaction. (I still have grandchildren to marry off, after all.) A pen name felt safer.

And now, it was published for all the world to see.

With my name.

It took time for the news to sink in. My story had been published and edited without my knowledge or agreement. My name was emblazoned on the title page — without a single email exchange from the magazine. To make the nightmare even uglier, the editors had drastically altered some details, which didn’t reflect my ideals or my values. In fact, I didn’t even know what some of the details meant.

It felt like the Chafetz Chaim’s famous parable with the feathers. Each word was another feather fluttering in the air, unable to be gathered and stuffed into the spam folder. The story was out. The magazine had a readership numbering in the tens of thousands. No amount of frantic emails to the editor could take that away. And no amount of apologies could make this better.

And it didn’t get better.

I had been hoping that not too many of my family, friends and neighbors would read it, but since it was a mega yom tov issue, many did buy it and pass it along. I got phone calls, comments in the grocery, and a mother of a student even called to make sure I was hashkafically sound enough to safely teach her daughter.

I hid. I cried. I considered moving to Hawaii.

What was I supposed to do? Explain to everyone how the acceptance and publishing process is supposed to work? Tell people that it was the magazine who had inserted all those details? How I was even more horrified than they were

I tried. After thirty seconds on the phone with a co-teacher, I knew it was futile. She had never written a sentence in her life. (After all, I was her friend, and that’s what writer friends are for, to write all your cards and poems.) She certainly didn’t know the first thing about publishing.

My explanation sounded lame even to my own ears.

So I did the next best thing. I accepted the shame quietly, as a zechus for a friend. And I anxiously waited for the next bit of gossip to make headlines so everyone would forget about me.

The editor, feeling awful, sent flowers for Shabbos as a peace offering.

I dumped them, still wrapped, into the garbage can.

All these years later, I still remember the words, the explanations, the defense burning in my throat. The desire to explain to an audience unwilling to listen and quick to pass judgment.

And sometimes, when I see roses, I’m reminded of the shame, and the lessons I learned. How different things can be from how they seem. How much judgment can hurt.

How much I hope I’ll never do that to others.

Not after a full day’s work, followed by a super-intense conversation with the indefatigable shadchan, Mrs. Fried.

Honestly, I still had my shoes on.

But Gili kept going; a bulldozer. “Yes, Chava Rivka. Now. We are talking about this right now, or—”

“Or what?” I bark. “You’ll lock me up in an ancient dungeon? Dye my hair purple while I’m sleeping?”

Gili interrupts me just as I’m warming up. “Chava Rivka. If you would’ve just gotten off the phone with the lady I just spoke to, you would not be joking. Mother of a great boy. At least, she thinks so. I tried. I really tried to give the best information I could. Until she asks me, ‘And what kind of phone does she

have?’. And I had to tell her.”

My heart dropped.

I came out of seminary fresh, cute and idealistic.

My unique streak, which had stayed loyally with me throughout life, was growing up with me. I loved being true to myself and doing my own thing.

When I got back from seminary, unlike my friends, I didn’t get a phone right away. My parents hated their phones and I thought that attitude was great. My mother let me use her phone basically as if it was my own, so I wasn’t

really missing anything. I thought this was a brilliant setup and loved not always being accessible every single second.

This system was totally working for me, my friends, my colleagues and everyone else. But it wasn’t working so well for my shidduchim.

“People will think you’re extreme. Intense. Over the top,” warned shadchanim when they heard that a normal girl like me didn’t have a phone.

“You can’t do this to us, Chava Rivka. We love you, but this is too much,” grumbled my friends, each time they gave information about me and shocked the poor boy’s mother by telling her I didn’t have a smartphone — no, not a flip phone either – actually, no phone at all.

I didn’t care. This was me. This was who I wanted to be.

But the pressure built slowly. Shadchanim. Mentors. Friends.

Then came the day when my own mother told me in unequivocal terms that I had to get a phone. The sooner the better.

The next Sunday found me walking towards Phone Stop, dragging my feet like a two-year-old being taken to get shots.

It wasn’t even about the phone anymore. I was just really upset to be doing something I didn’t want to do simply because some anonymous public out there thought I wasn’t normal if I didn’t.

I understood how it “looked,” but I wished I could tell everyone, all those well-meaning people, who really did want what was best for me, that just because someone doesn’t follow the crowd doesn’t mean you should label them as different, strange or weird. Maybe they’re just thoughtful, special and unique.

I got the phone. Life moved on. No major fireworks; no major bolts of lightning.

Eventually, I got engaged to a fantastic boy… drumroll… whose sister didn’t own a phone.

I loved the irony of it. Loved it.

I just wish we could open our minds just a little wider, and all be true to ourselves.

Judging someone – in their place

Ihad a baby the week before my daughter’s school play.

The play is the highlight of the school year, and I reassured my daughter that I’d do my best to make it to her play. My mother was overseas, but I asked my mother-in-law, who lived in a different city, if she’d consider coming, as a grandmother’s presence would mean a lot to my daughter.

“Sure,” my mother-in-law agreed. “Just tell me how to get there, and I’ll come.”

My mother-inlaw doesn’t drive and would come via public transporta-

tion; I appreciated her gesture and reminded my daughter to save a seat for her… and for me. The big day loomed. I headed out to the auditorium, hours after my daughter left for dress rehearsal, after settling my baby with a babysitter at home first.

Seating in the auditorium was a disorganized mess. My daughter had saved me and my mother-in-law seats, but those seats were occupied by a woman and her daughter who refused to vacate them. “You know there’s no such things as saving seats in advance, it’s first come first serve,” the woman insisted

The lights dimmed. My daughter headed backstage. My mother-in-law called my phone for my exact location.

“Please, I made an effort to be here, and my mother-in-law’s coming too,” I said “Can you please just give us your seats?” For a moment, I wished my newborn baby was with me; that way the woman would have understood how important the seats were to me.

The play began. My mother-in-law arrived.

The woman refused to budge.

I lifted my voice. “My daughter saved these seats.”

The woman didn’t hear me. She was intently focused on the stage.

My tone rose again. All around me, women began to stare.

“We really need these seats,” I insisted.

My tone was high.

Way too high.

The woman huffed. She rose together with her daughter and squeezed into an empty spot which somehow materialized in the row behind us, right next to her sister.

My mother-in-law and I slipped into the vacated seats. If only I could talk to her honestly! If only I could acknowledge what tremendous effort we had all made to be at this show for our daughters today. If only I had the courage to explain about my newborn baby, my elderly mother in law, that things aren’t always as they seem.

But who knows what explanations that woman may have had? Who knows what I couldn’t see?

Ilook around me in this new, vast world. It’s empty. No one is there.

I am alone in this strange world. It’s a world where a toddler knocks me off my feet. Where day begins before dawn and keeps me occupied at every second. I feel as though I was whisked suddenly from teenage freedom to all-consuming motherhood.

I keep looking around me. No one is here. The world is empty.

No one shares my challenge. My friends coast enthusiastically into their mothering role and wax poetic about cuddly pink blankets. My neighbors handle their gaggle of kids with experience and aplomb.

I rub my eyes and peer at the clock. Five-thirty a.m., and

Even though my kids look typical, I wish you knew that they’re not, and how challenging life is for me

the day has started with a bang. Bamba, Clics, Floortime, we do it all. I deposit my two children at their playgroups with both thrill and fear. I did it today—but tomorrow I will have to do it again.

The thing about being a young mother of your first two children is that, well, you’re a young mother of two children. This is the world you recognize, and you don’t know that any other reality exists.

TODAY, I KNOW THAT THERE ARE MANY KINDS OF EARLY MOTHERHOOD EXPERIENCES. NOT EVERYONE HAS AN EXTREMELY HYPERACTIVE SECOND CHILD WHILE THEIR FIRST IS STILL A TODDLER

Today, I know that there are many kinds of early motherhood experiences. Not everyone has an extremely hyperactive second child while their first is still a toddler.

But then, I thought that this was it. This is what being a mother was all about.

That didn’t make it any easier. It was so, so hard. So I cried. I cried out. I cried for help.

No one heard me.

Instead, I heard cheery platitudes, like, “At least they’re happy challenges,” and, “Enjoy this stage while it lasts.” I didn’t understand what they meant, but if the whole world was quoting them, I figured they must be true, and that I—with my desperate, helpless attitude—had it all wrong.

I figured I was just spoiled. Or just plain unhappy.

So I tried positive thinking. I tried writing a gratitude lists. Nothing worked.

I still called out for help, even though my cries disappeared into the vastness of the universe. I tried my mother. My sisters. Neighbors. Friends.

I didn’t know how to express myself. I didn’t know enough to say, “I’m dealing with a very big challenge in my life, and please can you be there for me.”

I just cried, and yes, complained. I was judged as spoiled, as someone who couldn’t weather the regular challenges of a mother’s everyday life.

Today, I look back, and I can see what was wrong. I know my experience wasn’t normal. There was something more to my struggle than typical toddler behavior. Today, I believe my longago cry.

And so I believe others when they cry. And whether I understand it or not, I know that if someone cries out, they need help. And I try to be there for them.

One of the powers that a president has is the ability to pardon criminals for federal offenses, which means their crimes are erased and their civil rights restored. Pardons can actually be given preemptively, before someone is charged with a crime. For criminals who the president doesn’t want to pardon completely, there are lesser forms of pardoning as well, which fall under the umbrella of clemency. This includes commuting someone’s sentence, which completely or partially reduces their sentences, offering a remission, which is a reduction in financial penalties, or giving a temporary respite during a sentence, which is usually given for medical reasons.

Pardons are one of the few things that the president has the first and last word on, which sometimes ruffles a few feathers and causes controversy as presidents use it to pardon family, friends or criminals that the public don’t think deserve to be pardoned.

NIXON

There was one time in American history when a president himself was pardoned. In 1974, then President Gerald Ford pardoned disgraced former president Richard Nixon just before he was to be indicted for the Watergate scandal. This pardon was probably the most controversial pardon in history, and many believe that Ford, who was Nixon’s vice president, had made a deal with Nixon that he would resign his presidency in exchange for a pardon from Ford. The pardon was met by an onslaught of criticism, and many believe it’s the reason why Ford didn’t win a second term in 1976.

MOST PRESIDENTIAL PARDONS

President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the most pardons, coming in at 2,819 pardons, although this was because he served the most presidential terms.

SO MANY QUESTIONS…

There was just one case in which a pardon was denied. In 1833, George Wilson and two accomplices were convicted of robbing the US Mail and threatening a mailman at gunpoint, and were all sentenced to death. After he was convicted, a campaign was started to have Wilson pardoned since he was young and seemed to have been coerced into the crime. Some also say the campaign gained traction because of connections Wilson had in Washington. President Andrew Jackson issued a partial pardon for some of the charges, but Wilson shocked the country by rejecting the pardon. The lawyers and judges were dumbfounded, and the case was sent to the Supreme Court to decide on how to move forward. When asked why he rejected the pardon, Wilson said he didn’t have anything to say on the matter, and he never did explain his reasoning. In legal documents about the case there seems to be confusion about the charges brought against him, what the sentence for each charge was, and how the pardon would’ve applied to each one. But if he didn’t want it, he didn’t want it, and the Supreme Court ruled that a pardon can’t be forced on someone against their will. Somehow, despite rejecting the pardon, Wilson avoided being hanged, and in 1841, newspapers reported that President Martin van Buren successfully issued a complete pardon for Wilson.

BRAINWASHED OR BANK ROBBER?

FAMILY MATTERS

Family favors aren’t unheard of in Washington, and President Bill Clinton issued a pardon for his half-brother Roger Clinton. Roger had pleaded guilty to drug distribution charges and was serving time in prison when Clinton pardoned him on his last day in office. But as is the case with some criminals who get too many free passes, Roger was arrested just a month later for drunk driving.

In 1974 the nineteen-year-old granddaughter of a newspaper mogul was kidnapped for ransom by a domestic terrorist group called the Symbionese Liberation Army. Much to the shock of the public, soon after being kidnapped, she announced that she was voluntarily joining the group, only to be arrested a few days later for participating in a bank heist with them. Although her lawyers argued that she had been brainwashed, she was still sentenced to seven years in prison. there was a woman whose child had been diagnosed with cancer l”a, and when he finally recovered she went to ask a gadol what she could do as a zechus for her son to stay well, so that his illness shouldn’t return ch”v. the gadol suggested that she should go visit Yisrael in the hospitals so she could help them and lift their spirits. the woman agreed, and almost daily, she visited the oncology ward of the hospital supporting patients on both a physical and emotional level. and then, in 2004, during the time when there was a big awareness throughout Klal Yisrael about the fact that sheitels contain hair that was sacrificed to avoda zara, she noticed that the hospital’s oncology ward was basically empty. surprised, she asked the doctors what was going on. the doctors said they were astounded as well. they had never before encountered such a situation where there were no new patients and the ward completely emptied out.

the doctors asked her if she might know why or how this was happening. after giving it some thought, the woman realized that precisely during those weeks, there had been a big revolution about the sheitels because they were prohibited by gedolim and therefore, women stopped wearing them and burned them. the doctors said, “now we understand. Your g-d loves you. He’s happy with what you’re doing. You are doing this only for His honor – what an enormous pleasure you’ve given Him!”

What a gift it is to be able to recognize with complete clarity what ratzon Hashem requires...!

We All Want Our Tefillos to Reach the דובכה אסכ

The Seforim bring down from the שודקה רהז that if a person wears a garment that contains shatnez, it blocks a person’s tefillos from reaching Hashem. There is a similar halacha brought down in Shulchan Aruch

that if a person davens in a shul and one flight above him there is a restroom on top of his head, that creates a לידבמה ךסמ that in effect blocks a person’s tefillos from reaching Hashem. (Therefore, the plans of shuls are always designed to have the restrooms of the second floor above those of the first floor.)

Many Rabbonim have spoken publicly saying that shatnez is only one אתיירואד ואל whereas the האנה רוסיא of avoda zara is two אתיירואד ןיואל )’ב ’לה

ם”במר( and is a much more severe issur - תורומחבש תורומח – and according to many poskim,

So, if shatnez blocks a person’s tefillos from reaching Hashem, how much more can the severe issur of avoda zara ו”ח block a person’s tefillos from reaching Hashem. And if a clean restroom that has no waste in it now, can ו”ח block a person’s tefillos, how much more disgusting in the eyes of Hashem is a sheitel made of tikroves avoda zara that is called הבעות

ם”במר( as the pasuk says: ”ונבעתת בעתו

Who knows how many tefillos are being blocked ו”ח when davening while wearing Indian human hair sheitels.

at least when you say tehillim or when you daven םיארונ םימי and are asking hashem so many different תושקב for the entire year, make sure to wear a kosher headcovering so that your tefillos don’t get blocked and have the maximum power.

Most hair in the world and even what is so-called Brazilian or European is really Indian temple hair that is forbidden as Tikroves Avoda Zara. Many Rabbonim and הרות ינב in Lakewood and South Fallsburg are taking this issue very seriously. Many Rabbonim have come to the conclusion that even so-called hechsherim are not reliable unless they see the actual cutting - הזיזג תעשמ הרימש - like the hechsherim of Amshinov and Ateres Roshah which actually are reliable. But they are available in very small amounts.
