A WEEKLY HIGHLIGHT (Re: Coloring Pages) I would like to extend a thank you to Faigy Jacobowitz. The weekly coloring pages are drawn so sweetly and with such a Yiddish taam, and my kids love to find it in each week’s magazine. I don’t have a copy machine, so they take turns, with a different child coloring the page each week. Keep up the beautiful work. Thank you! Coloring Clan
NO LONGER OBLIVIOUS (Re: Familiar Faces, Issue 57) I enjoyed your informative interview with Mr. Felsen. Although I’m not a Kol Mevaser listener, I’m beginning to understand why some of my family members find it so intriguing! However, I strongly disagree with his closing statement: “...One can live his entire life without knowing that the parties have shifted.” As our yeshivos and businesses are being targeted in a very brutal way, with city cops turning a blind eye to crime out of fear (I witnessed this personally), we are all feeling the effects of a city being run by a very liberal government that’s totally antithetical to our religious lifestyles. Of course, as believing Yidden we know that “lev malachim b’Yad Hashem.” But I dare to say that if our city would’ve been in Republican hands, things would have been a lot better for our community. One year ago, perhaps, we wouldn’t have thought that which party NYC’s mayor belongs to would make a difference in our day-to-day lives, but in these unprecedented times, it apparently does. To believe that politics doesn’t affect us is naive. I’m wishing Mr. Felsen much success in all of his endeavours, and as a recipient of RCCS’s amazing work, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you! G. Gottesman The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. Please email comments@thebpview.com.

INBOX NOT AS DIRE A DIAGNOSIS (Re: A Guiding Hand, Issue 57) I read the story about the boy who was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis and was cured by the Sarno method, and I feel that I have to share my story to clarify the misinformation. I, too, was diagnosed with juvenile arthritis as a teenager, though it was a mild case. When I received
of the problem, which is the key to actually eliminating it (unlike other methods such as medication, vitamins, therapy, etc., which usually only relieve pain, but do not necessarily get rid of it.) A common misconception is that the pain is not real pain, and that’s it’s all in the mind. (Your cover caption It’s All in Your Mind might have given this misleading message.) In truth, the pain that people experience is very real and can even be excruciating! It is the result of the brain’s depriving certain areas in the body of oxygen. In fact, Dr. Schubiner and Dr. Schecter, doctors trained under Dr. Sarno himself, clearly explain in our course that the pain is very real and is not imaginary. Some people find it hard to accept that stress and emotions can be the actual cause of their symptoms, and they prefer to first try different interventions before going ahead with the Sarno method. Most of us have stress, and we have to realize that stress causing pain is not a stigma. The Rambam, the biggest doctor in Jewish history, once wrote a letter to the Sultan where he said that before he examines a patient in search of physical symptoms, he first checks to see whether there is underlying emotional pain or stress since this is usually the cause for most physical pain. There is hope for those suffering from chronic conditions. You don’t have to resign yourself to a life of pain. Chanie Zimmer 929-600-9900
My heart began to thrum with worry. Three of his knuckles were swollen to double their size. The dirty dishes and Magna-Tiles strewn all over the floor faded into the background. What was wrong with my child?
It was during the mayhem of supper-bath-bedtime when my elevenyear-old son Shimmy approached me, a glimmer of worry in his blue eyes. “Ma, my knuckles are stiff,” he complained. I was stirring the soup absentmindedly when I took a look and stopped. The sight of his swollen knuckles got me nervous. They just didn’t look right. Our pediatrician checked it out and advised us to wait a bit before doing anything drastic. “Maybe they’re just bruised; give his fingers a chance to heal.” But the next few days found the swelling spreading to Shimmy’s other hand, and our feeling of unease intensified. It was uncomfortable and strange and really getting in the way. We had to get to the root of the issue. Shimmy was tested for strep and Lyme disease, but all the bloodwork came back negative. Confusion and anxiety hung over us like a heavy storm cloud. Our next step was a top rheumatologist in Columbia Hospital. As we entered, I hoped this visit would provide the answer we so desperately sought for my child in pain, but I couldn’t have imagined the dreary diagnosis.
the diagnosis, my doctor said that in the case of juvenile arthritis, which is different from adult-onset arthritis, the right treatment plan can lead to remission. I was on anti-inflammatory medication for a year or two, and I began eating a more healthy diet. I also went for physical therapy and carefully did the exercises I was taught. After about two years, the doctor said that I was in remission. More than thirteen years have passed since then, and other than some knee pain on cold or rainy days and stiff fingers the first two minutes after waking up, I, baruch Hashem, haven’t had any symptoms since. It seems that the doctor in the story provided inaccurate information to the mother when she predicted that it wouldn’t get better. I’m worried people will believe that juvenile arthritis is usually a lifelong condition, and I’d like to clear up that misinformation. Thank you, Healed

IT’S ALL HASHEM (Re: The Chassidish Weather Guru, Issue 56) I read the interview with Mr. Yisroel Yaakov Bigeleisen. It was a very nice read, but at the end of the article was a line that just didn’t sound right. It read: “Whatever nature has in store, Yaker Bigeleisen will be right on top of it…” There’s no such a thing as “whatever nature has in store.” It’s all the Ribbono Shel Olam. WEEK 7:
RADIANT Hakadosh Baruch Hu tells us, “Neiri b’yadcha v’nercha b’yadi; im hei’arta neiri, hareini me’ir nercha.” Loosely translated: “You hold in your hands the ability to bring light to My home, and I hold in My hands the ability to bring light to yours. If you light up My home, I will light up your home with radiance.”[1] Arranging ample lighting for a beis knesses is not merely an obligation — it’s something that brings immense bracha. The benefit of a bright atmosphere is twofold: First, ensuring a well-illuminated beis knesses means making it that much easier for all those who enter to learn and daven properly. Furthermore, lighting plays a key role in enhancing the image of a room, turning a dark and uninviting space into one most welcoming, radiant and regal. Coming into a room that sparkles and glows inevitably gives one the feeling of a special aura, along with the emotion of being in a special place. As such, one who invests in ensuring that a beis knesses is well illuminated is a most significant investor, both in facilitating each and every tefillah offered, as well as in directly raising up the prestige and kavod of the home of Hakadosh Baruch Hu in people’s eyes. It is no wonder that one who does so merits extraordinary bracha from Above. Indeed, many incidents in Chazal bear testimony to this bracha. Devorah Haneviah was known as Eishes Lapidos, woman of the flames, for her care and diligence in preparing special wicks for the Menorah, wicks that would cultivate a large and steady flame. It was the merit of this mitzvah that brought her greatness. Oveid Edom HaGiti hosted the Aron and Luchos in his home. During this time, he would light one candle each morning
Coming into a room that sparkles and glows inevitably gives one the feeling of a special aura. and one each evening in front of the Aron. For this act, he received tremendous bracha, being blessed in short order with multiple children and grandchildren. In times gone by, those who wished to partake in this mitzvah would purchase oil for lamps in a shul, or be involved personally by coming each morning to light the lamps. Today, with electricity and automation, there is far less opportunity for direct involvement, but many opportunities remain. One example is contributing toward the electric bill, which is a significant cost for any shul. Another would be paying to help upgrade the lighting systems in place, or turning on whatever lighting is not automated, such as the Ner Tamid. See a burntout light bulb? How about getting on a chair and changing it yourself, instead of just leaving it for the elusive “some-
one” to eventually come and replace it? While the single burnt-out bulb may or may not impair anyone’s reading, replacing it certainly enhances the Beis Hashem, and shows that care to make His home glow. A FEW POINTS WORTH MENTIONING: • Which form of lighting carries the mitzvah and special bracha? Aside from the basic lighting in the room, a typical feature of a beis knesses is the Ner Tamid — a small light, usually electric, left to burn constantly throughout the day. It seems that the introduction of the Ner Tamid was meant, on some level, to replicate the concept of a constant flame of the Menorah in the Beis Hamikdash.[2] Another feature typically in
a beis knesses is a menorah or other lighting placed next to the chazzan, to be lit during tefillos. Interestingly, this is typically found in shuls with Ashkenazi customs, but not in most Sefardi shuls. Fascinatingly, both the Ner Tamid and neiros of the chazzan find almost no mention at all in the words of the poskim.[3] The lack of mention strongly indicates that these were not widely accepted customs until relatively recently. • As such, though having these neiros are a beautiful characteristic of our shuls, the mitzvah of providing light for the beis knesses does not refer specifically to these neiros, but rather to the general overall lighting of the room. To the degree that these neiros enhance the overall aura of the room, they would be included in the mitzvah as well, but there is no inherent halachic insistence on or preference for these neiros. • There is no specific emphasis as to
IN SUMMATION: 1. It is necessary to ensure that shuls are well illuminated. The reason for the obligation is both to facilitate tefillos as well as to provide kavod by creating a radiant atmosphere. 2. The lighting should be turned on prior to the arrival of the crowds for tefillah.

the type of lighting to use. Many of the newer forms of lighting, such as LED, halogen or other, lend a beautiful glow and truly dignify the aura of the room.[4] Oil lamps, electric lights or other are all fine as far as the mitzvah is concerned.[5] The poskim do say that any lighting that will create a mess in the shul, or cause a hazardous situation if left around after people are gone, should be avoided.

• Although the primary mitzvah is at the time the beis knesses is actually being used for Torah and tefillah, care should be taken to turn on the light prior to the arrival of people. The reason for this is twofold: First, we are told that in any location where ten people gather to daven on a regular basis, Hakadosh Baruch Hu Himself “arrives” early, coming to this location to await the minyan. In respect of His arrival, the added dignity of the lighting should be early as well. A second factor is that, in line with our awareness that our shuls are miniature versions of the Beis Hamikdash, we seek to replicate many facets of the avodah. Just as the Menorah was lit prior to the beginning of the daily avodah, we illuminate our mikdash me’at prior to the beginning of our daily avodah.

The imperative to make a beis knesses sparkle emanates from it being the home of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. This is not, however, something He requires. It’s something we need to do for ourselves. Human nature is that we hold things only in as high regard as we treat them. If we deal with them with a casual disregard, our internal respect for these things will disintegrate. If, however, we treat them in a most special way, taking even small steps to enhance the beauty and sparkle, we will develop true internal reverence and respect for these places of kedusha.

In fact, the Mishnah Berurah (Biur Halacha, siman 514) expresses great difficulty with there being any benefit to having neiros or lights on when the shul is not in use. Although the lighting is a matter of beautification, beauty requires a beholder, and with no one using the shul, the prestige receives no enhancement.

It is important to point out that in many batei midrash there have been complaints that these lights, based on the specifics of how they were positioned, cause significant stress on the eye when reading. It is important to take care that the kavod not be enhanced in a way that will damage the ability to learn and daven.

Although a number of seforim mention some degree of preference for oil for at least the Ner Tamid or other dedicated lights, this opinion is not accepted as a matter of halacha. Although in regard to lighting a flame in memory of one who passed away there is a benefit to using an actual flame, this is because of the allusion of the flame to the neshamah, whereas when dealing with lighting for a shul the concern is one of how to achieve the greatest radiance; whichever method achieves this best is the most preferred.

At Long Last, Back to School for Kids in Red and Orange COVID-19 Zones After weeks of frustration, threats of $15,000 fines, and multiple daily inspections at yeshivos in the state’s red and orange micro-clusters, Governor Andrew Cuomo has finally allowed schools to reopen, albeit with strict testing protocols in place. The governor’s long-awaited announcement came last Friday afternoon, much to the relief of parents, students, teachers and school administrators statewide. “In the micro-cluster zones, we’ve been working with schools in the red and the orange zones,” said Cuomo. “The schools, private schools, Catholic schools, yeshivos, want to be open in the red and orange zones, and we’ve been working with them to try to find ways to keep people safe but allow children to go to school. We have agreed with them on a protocol that keeps people safe and allows children to be educated.” Schools are permitted to reopen four days after a zone is designated a COVID-19 hotspot, with only students and staff members who test negative permitted to return. Schools must test 25% of their students and staff each week, with that requirement lowered to 20% for yellow-zone schools. Schools with an enrollment of 300 or more would be forced to close if their positivity rates exceed 2% in New York City, and 3% in the remainder of the state, while in smaller schools, closures would be mandated if nine COVID-19 cases are confirmed. Those who test positive would be subject to isolation, with the state initiating contact tracing for their families. Rapid tests will be provided to schools by request, and all results must be submitted to the state. Schools that reopen without complying to the new guidelines could face fines and penalties. Elected officials responded positively to the news.

“Very pleased that together with @NYGovCuomo we were able to find a way to get kids in red zones back to school,” said Senator Simcha Felder on social media. “This is great news for kids and working parents!” “After weeks of pleading and advocating that our kids must go back to school, I am glad that Governor Cuomo has heard our call,” said Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein. “Countless studies and data samples have shown that it is possible to ensure a healthy and safe school environment for our children and school staff. There is no question that this is a step forward in guaranteeing our children the education that they need and deserve.” City Councilman Chaim Deutsch called Cuomo’s announcement a step in the right direction, but noted in a social media post that other restrictions continue to create undue hardship for many. “Waiting to hear about businesses and houses of worship…” observed Deutsch. A Monday morning press conference had Senator Simcha Felder, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein and City Councilman Kalman Yeger joining with small business owners to announce the launch of the Save Our Stores Act, which would waive payments of fines incurred by red-zone businesses during the latest lockdown period. The legislation was proposed jointly in both the state Legislature and the City Council to protest excessive penalties levied by government agencies, further imperiling small businesses that faced tremendous hardships during the initial lockdown last spring. ”We have a responsibility to do everything in our power to save New York’s small business owners from any additional burdens during these exceptional times, and forgive these senseless COVID-related fines immediately,” said Felder. “The legislation my colleagues and I are proposing is an SOS to save our stores.” Eichenstein took the city government to task for harassing small businesses and unfairly issuing summonses while big box stores were permitted to conduct business as usual.
“This legislation is a step forward in doing right by our small business owners and perhaps can help them get back on their feet and focus on reopening their businesses as they just try to make an honest living,” said Eichenstein. Slamming officials for singling out the Jewish community for punishment, Yeger praised the legislation as a step toward justice. “Dozens of quota agents from the alphabet soup of agencies have descended on our neighborhood, not to educate businesses how to better comply with ever-changing rules, but rather to issue onerous — and many times, false — violations,” said Yeger. “The only way to address these summonses is through legislation that will zero out the penalties.”
be seriously injured than those who are properly restrained. Violators could be fined $50, with drivers facing $25 to $100 penalties as well as three points on their license for each violation. Goodbye, Out-of-State Quarantine List — Hello, Testing!
More than a year after yeshivah parents flooded Albany with nearly 150,000 letters opposing new guidelines mandating significantly increased secular instruction in all private schools, the New York State Education Department has announced that six virtual meetings will be held with private school stakeholders and their public school counterparts as they reformulate substantial equivalence regulations. The meetings will be held in November and December in various parts of the state, with a meeting for Hudson Valley schools to be held from 10 a.m to 1 p.m. on December 7, and another for Brooklyn schools scheduled for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on December 9. A special meeting for parents, students and alumni is slated for 2 to 5 p.m. on December 8. The meeting are limited in size because of technical constraints. Anyone interested in joining the meetings should complete an application to participate at www.bit. ly/2TFDoqG. Vice Chancellor T. Andrew Brown noted that the large number of comments received in July 2019 made it apparent that additional discussions on substantial equivalence were necessary. “The board and I are committed to leading an educational system where all learning environments, whether public or private, respect and affirm students’ racial, linguistic, cultural and religious identities, and we look forward to hearing the thoughtful input from educational leaders across the state throughout this endeavor,” said Brown. Interim Commissioner Betty A. Rosa said that she looks forward to working with the private school community to ensure that all students in the state receive an education that will allow them to maximize their potential. “As we begin the process of engaging our partners in the field, we anticipate constructive and thoughtful discussions to develop an inclusive framework for determining substantial equivalence for the students of New York State,” said Rosa. State Senator Simcha Felder expressed optimism that the meeting could yield positive results. “Interim Commissioner Rosa displays exceptional sensitivity in her vision and approach to this process,” said Felder. “I am very pleased to be working with her and look forward to open and respectful dialogue together with the people who are most invested in the outcome. I am hopeful that together, we will re-envision and recreate substantial equivalency guidelines that positively impact the future.”
With visitors from nearly the entire United States officially subjected to fourteen-day quarantines as New York’s own COVID-19 rates continue rising, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced new protocols last weekend for those traveling to the Empire State from any state other than New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. “There will be no quarantine list,” said the governor, who noted that the change in policy was based on expert advice. “There will be one rule that applies across the country. We bent the curve of this virus by following the data and the science, and we are continuing that approach with these new guidelines.” Under the new policy, anyone coming to New York from an affected state would be required to complete an official travel information form upon their arrival and take a COVID-19 test on their fourth day back in the state. Those who were in an affected state for more than 24 hours would also have to submit proof of a negative result from a COVID-19 test taken three days before their arrival in New York, with the quarantine requirement waived once they have received negative results on their second test. Contact tracing and isolation orders will be issued to those who test positive. Cuomo acknowledged that quarantining those coming in from New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania would be overly disruptive and has continued asking state residents to avoid all nonessential travel to neighboring states.
New Seat Belt Laws Now in Effect for Backseat Passengers A bill signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo in August went into effect on Sunday, with all backseat passengers now required to wear seat belts. Previously, only backseat passengers under the age of sixteen were required to wear seat belts. The law was intended as a safety measure, and according to AAA New York State, unbelted backseat passengers are twice as likely to die in a collision and eight times as likely to

Recap: Gustav comes down with severe pneumonia after his secret trip to Bnei Brak. As he lies sick in the orphanage infirmary, afraid that this time he might die, he blurts out that someone must tell something to a Yosef Ludmir from Bratislava. Blumi comes to Eretz Yisroel and visits Elisheva in her home. She tells Elisheva that she is very familiar with the U’shemartem organization and that it doesn’t make sense that they would raffle off such a big and beautiful apartment. “Hello? Is this U’shemartem? This is Mrs. Hartstein from London calling again. May I speak to Rabbi Weil? He’s busy again? Honestly, young lady, I’m beginning to think you are being evasive.” Elisheva, who was holding Nati in her right hand, and keeping an eye on Bentzy as he looked for his father among the people dancing on the street, did not understand how Blumi could possibly conduct a conversation with the thundering drums of the band in the background. Indeed, she really did not seem to be able to. “I’ll call again tomorrow. And please let him know that I expect him to make some time to answer my phone call. Perhaps my husband will call instead of me. Have a good day.” She stuck the phone into her designer pocketbook and turned to Elisheva. “If my husband calls, you can be sure that Weil will answer him. Do you see how they’re being evasive when I call?” “Yes,” Elisheva said. “They are being a bit evasive, for sure.” “A bit? This is not a bit. I’m not used to having to call four times, and even like this, I’m still not getting answered. The first time was when I was at your house last week. The
second time was on Friday, the third was on Sunday, and now’s the fourth time. Something here is very strange.” “Yes,” Elisheva agreed. “It is a bit strange.” Where was Devorah? Perhaps she could see if Meir and Itzik were next to Eliyahu. From where she was standing, she could not see into the circles of dancers, and she couldn’t ask her new friend to move along a bit, just like she couldn’t ask her to stop investigating this matter of the U’shemartem raffle. Interestingly enough, as soon as Blumi began digging into the issue, Elisheva realized how much she did not want to discover that these events had been orchestrated by people. Talking about how it was interesting and strange and how perhaps someone had done it all on purpose — yes. But to discover that these musings were actually anchored in reality? To realize that someone had decided to take them on as his life’s project and support them in any way possible, some of them more delusional than others? No. Only now did she realize how much she didn’t want it. But she knew the way of the world: Mon-

ey talks, and things were quite out of her control right now. ***** “Where’s Zeidy?” It was after the dancing, during the seudah that was being held in the apartment right near the shul, and Elisheva was uneasy. Her father had been a bit weak since the morning, perhaps due to all of the excitement. He’d been fine on the trip to Yerushalayim, baruch Hashem, and he had even participated in the dancing a bit. But she was worried about him. “He’s sitting next to Tatty,” four-year-old Bentzy reported when he peeked into the women’s side. “And Tatty’s asking if Nati is with you.” “Yes, he’s right here,” Elisheva said. Nati was sleeping on her lap, and she was making every effort not to wake him. So on one side she had Blumi, telling her about her recent trip to France, and on her other side, Esti was trying to convince her to taste a salad whose ingredients she could not identify. Across from her were her new acquaintances, the women of the small Halabi community. Elisheva was doing her best to handle all of her current roles with aplomb. “I really admire you,” Blumi said suddenly, after a surprising moment of silence. “You what?” “I admire you. Bli ayin hara, you are raising such a beautiful family, and handling things that I would think are just unmanageable.” Elisheva smiled at her dinner roll. “What do you mean, ‘unmanageable’?” she asked. “Your financial situation, for example.” Blumi was speaking calmly, as if there was nothing offensive about what she was saying. Which was why Elisheva tried to take her words the way they were said, without offense. “Really?” she asked. “It looks unmanageable to you?” “A little bit. When you describe what you use to put together a meal… I feel so bad. On the one

hand, of course.” Then she hastily added, “Because on the other hand — and that’s the stronger side, clearly — it just makes me admire you more.” “Admire?” “Yes. Like I said when I started this conversation, in case you didn’t hear.” “Yes, I heard.” Elisheva smiled again. “And you look very much like
the medical front to be able to take care of him?” “No, he’s considered healthy, baruch Hashem. We’ll have to accompany him to his physical therapy sessions and make sure he takes his medications, but nothing much more than that. We will need to do some renovations to the house, though.” “Renovations?” “Yes. The quiet is very important
Blumi was fascinating. She was quite sharp, but at the same time, she sometimes came across as woefully unaware. your father, you know? Maybe that’s where you got this ability to cope in difficult situations.” She suddenly grew serious. “Not that I know such situations myself. Someone else came up with the phrase, ‘money solves everything,’ but I’m ready to sign on it with a few hands, if only I had them.” “Of course.” Elisheva chuckled. Blumi was fascinating. She was quite sharp, but at the same time, she sometimes came across as woefully unaware. She was refined, but suffered from a moderate to serious case of tactlessness. She had a mild egoistic streak, but at the same time was very friendly, and even more generous. “When your father walks, he looks very elderly, but his face gives a younger impression,” Blumi continued. Elisheva sighed. “He had a stroke less than three years ago, you know. After it happened, I really wanted him to come live with us, but he refused.” “And now?” “As soon as we won the apartment, I brought up the subject again, but he keeps putting us off. Lately he seems to have softened his stance a bit. We’ll see; maybe over the summer he’ll finally agree to move in.” “Will you have to do anything on
to him. I want to make his room into a totally separate unit. It’s a bit removed from the whole apartment as it is. So we’ll put another door at the beginning of the hallway, and add a little kitchenette and anything else he might need.” “Now he lives in an old-age home?” “That’s right. And he has a little kitchenette in his room. Not that he cooks anything, but he can make himself tea or coffee, or cut up a fruit… We want him to be as comfortable as possible in our house, as well.” ***** “Details about the Ludmir family?” “Yes, there are things that I already know, but if there is any additional information, I’d be happy to receive it.” Joe Ludmir paused. “But that’s not the main thing.” “Nu?” After many months of working together, Leonid of O.S.U. Information Services Ltd. was quite familiar with his cautious client. “I need information about children who were in the Lucius Jan Catholic Children’s Home during the war years. I don’t have an exact entry date, but they left in November of 1948. When they were there they were called —” he paused again

I prefer, for my own reasons, that you start a clean, new search.” “So you want me to look for any details about them, irrespective of when or what, right?” “Yes, you can say that. Actually, you don’t have to delve into what happened to them after the war. I’m up to date about them both on that matter. But other things are very important to me.” “All right.” “Look, I visited Bratislava a few months ago, and I discovered that the Catholic orphanage building has been demolished. I was in the old municipal archive, but I found that this work is really not for me. I didn’t even know where to start. Besides, I had to suddenly cut the trip short to return home.” “I see. All right, I’ll take care of it.” Leonid’s courteous, easygoing nature was one of his most prominent traits. “And if I have any questions?” “Call or send me a fax. Oh, and Leonid?” “Yes, Mr. Ludmir?” “Please immediately send me every detail that you find. Directly to me. Not to one of my secretaries or the office of the factory. Only to my personal number at the office, or to my home.” “No problem.” Joe went out for his evening walk. He chose the park at the end of the street as his destination, and he walked in that direction very slowly. Daniel Ludmir and his wife were

expecting him to travel with them to America in another month, to attend their son Arik’s wedding. But Joe wasn’t sure he would go, despite his excellent health. First of all, a flight to America was not like a domestic flight in Australia; it was a much bigger exertion. And besides… it would only intensify his heartache. And with that, his backache. “Psychological pains,” Dr. Benson called them. They would only get worse — that was as clear to him as the clearly marked paths in this park, which he used to meander along during those long-ago evening walks with Martha, of blessed memory. If Martha would be alive, what would she say? That there’s nothing like family? Probably. That you don’t treat cousins lightly, especially if you have no one closer? She had a gaggle of siblings and nieces and nephews, along with their spouses and children. But she always encouraged Joe to keep in close touch with his relatives, too — his Uncle Gershon and Aunt Batya, and their children, Gavriel, Miriam, Elisha and Reuven. He was closest to Elisha, Daniel’s father. He could attribute many of his business successes to Elisha, and also to Gavriel; the rule of not doing business with family did not really seem to apply to them. Joe wasn’t sure that he would be pleased with the whole atmosphere at this wedding, anyway. Daniel was Orthodox, sure, but his son Arik did not exactly adhere to everything his parents did. Not that Daniel had built a home that was exactly like his parents’, either; he had not. But the sharp differences of this new generation were much starker than the ongoing, subtle changes of decades past. His mind flashed back to his aunt and uncle’s home in Magdiel…. The brush alongside the pretty path in the Sydney park did not at all remind him of the huge field that spanned the area behind the one-story house of Uncle Gershon and Aunt Batya. Then why was he suddenly smelling the wildflowers that grew like ivy up the sides of the house, toward the orange-shingled roof? To be continued...

The Die Is Cast THE PULSE: As we go to press, the results of the election are not yet known. It is likely that when this article is being read, the winner of the presidential election will have already been announced. It is also possible that the presidential election’s outcome will be too close to call and will then be litigated in the courts in the weeks and months to come. While the presidential election is undoubtedly the most important card on the ticket, the Senate’s balance of power is also at stake, with many incumbents facing a tough reelection fight. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, 68% of American adults view the presidential election as a significant source of stress in their lives, and 77% of U.S. adults say that they are worried about the nation’s future. As frum Yidden we are required to do our hishtadlus and

vote; however, proper emunah dictates that once we complete our hishtadlus, we no longer fear what may result. The Chovos Halevavos in Sha’ar Habitachon makes the case that a true baal bitachon has nothing to fear. Mishlei (21:1) states, “Like streams of water, the heart of the king is in the hand of G-d. He directs it anywhere He wishes.” Ultimately, Hashem is the one Who controls the heart of a ruler or president. Recent American history bears out this fact. Presidents who espoused blatantly anti-Semitic rhetoric were often extremely helpful to Jews during their presidency. Both Donald Trump and Joe Biden have strong and positive relationships with the Jewish community, but below is a list of some who did not, yet ended up helping the Jewish community. ULYSSES S. GRANT: The eighteenth president was a hero of the American Civil War. However, on Decem-
ber 17, 1862, as Union General, he expelled the Jews as a class from the area under his control, referred to as the Department of the Tennessee. Jews were given 48 hours to evacuate their homes and leave the region. A group of Jewish merchants in Paducah, Kentucky, led by Ceser Kaskel, traveled to Washington, D.C., and met with President Abraham Lincoln, who promptly rescinded Grant’s edict. When Grant was elected president, many Jews feared that he would discriminate against them, but Grant proved to be a great friend of the Jewish community. When the Russian government expelled Jews living in their border region, Grant publicly protested. When the Romanian government persecuted Jews in Romania, Grant protested by sending a Jewish ambassador to Bucharest. Grant appointed Jews to governorships and positions of power. In 1876 he became the first American president to attend a synagogue dedication. At the event, he pledged $10 (approximately $200 today) to Washington’s Adas Israel congregation. HARRY S. TRUMAN:
The 33rd president kept a private diary. In an entry dated July 1947, Truman wrote, “The Jews, I find, are very, very selfish. They care not how many Latvians, Finns, Poles, Estonians, and Greeks get murdered or mistreated as DPs [displaced persons] as long as Jews get special treatment. Yet when they have power, physical, financial or political, neither Hitler or Stalin has anything on them for cruelty or mistreatment for the underdog.” In another entry, he wrote that “the Jews have no sense of proportion, nor do they have any judgment on world affairs.” Truman wrote this less than two years after the conclusion of World War II and the Holocaust. In May 1948, the British mandate in Palestine came to an end. Israel declared its independence, and Truman proved to be a true friend of the Jewish people. The U.S. State Department and Secretary of State George Marshall strongly opposed U.S. recognition of the nascent state and lobbied the president not to grant it U.S. recognition. President Truman chose to ignore their objections and gave de facto recognition to Israel eleven minutes after it declared independence. RICHARD NIXON: The 37th president was known for his
brash persona. He also taped many of his conversations. In the summer of 1971, Nixon lashed out repeatedly at Jews. He said that “the Jews are all over the government,”
and “most Jews are disloyal.” He also said that “generally speaking, you can’t trust the... [Jews]. They turn on you. Am I wrong or right?” He demanded that his Chief of Staff put someone in charge “who is not Jewish.” During the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Israel was pushed to the brink. President Nixon chose to airlift military supplies to a desperate Israeli army. Nixon sent tanks, artillery and ammunition to Israel despite the opposition of his Jewish Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, who feared that military support for Israel would anger America’s Arab allies. Nixon’s decision allowed Israel to change the war’s tide and enabled the IDF to successfully repel the Arab advance. It is also essential to recognize that many presidents who were perceived as biased against Israel provided help to the Jewish people when needed. President George H.W. Bush is remembered for holding up $10 billion in loan guarantees to Israel’s government due to his opposition to settlement construction. Often forgotten is his strong advocacy and strong support for Jews seeking to escape trouble spots in Russia, Syria and Ethiopia. Many find President Jimmy Carter’s record on the Palestinian issue to be biased and anti-Israel. Yet he is responsible for the Camp David accords, which resulted in the first peace treaty between Israel and an Arab nation. Peace with Egypt has proved durable and beneficial for Israel’s long-term security. Many rightfully critique President Barack Obama for his policy of putting daylight between Israel and America and his failure to veto UN resolutions against Israel. Yet President Obama provided funding for Israel’s Iron Dome and Arrow Missile System. He approved the most extensive foreign aid package to Israel. His memorandum of understanding prevents conditions from being attached to aid to Israel. Obama also helped rescue Israeli diplomats from the Egyptian embassy when an Islamist mob attacked it. THE IMPACT: The polls have closed, and the die is cast. It is incumbent upon us to remember that world events are in the hand of Hashem. Voting is a civic duty, an act of hakaras hatov to America, and an act of hishtadlus. Now that voting has concluded, let us dispel fear and anxiety from our hearts and rely on the Ribbono Shel Olam that all will be for the best.

VEGGIE BURGERS
So easy, and oh, so tasty!
This recipe reminds me of the country and all the Betty Crocker magic that happens there. Thank you, Perry Lefkowitz, for the recipe idea!
INGREDIENTS
INGREDIENTS
4 tsp. oil, divided
2 tsp. oil
1 lb. ground beef
2 onions, peeled and chopped
½ onion, chopped
1½ tsp. kosher salt, divided
½ green pepper, chopped
8 oz. fresh mushrooms, chopped
3 cloves minced garlic
1 tsp. honey
1 cup marinara sauce
1 tsp. soy sauce
½ tsp. salt
1 bag (24 oz.) California Blend frozen vegetables
¼ tsp. pepper
½ tsp. garlic powder
Pinch of red pepper flakes
¼ tsp. black pepper
8 6-inch wraps
2 eggs ¼ cup bread crumbs
DIRECTIONS
Vegetable oil spray
1. Heat approximately 2 teaspoons of oil in the pizza maker.
DIRECTIONS
2. Saute the meat for 3 minutes, until browned on both sides. Don’t overmix the meat as it will become tough.
1. Preheat the pizza maker with approximately 2 teaspoons oil.
4. Add onions and peppers to the pizza maker, and saute for five minutes.
2. Saute the onions with half a teaspoon salt for 15 minutes. Add the mushrooms and saute for an additional 10 minutes, mixing occasionally until crisp and caramelized.
5. Add garlic and saute until fragrant, another half a minute.
3. Add the honey and soy sauce, and saute for an additional minute.
6. Return the beef to the Courant, along with marinara sauce, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Saute another two minutes. Remove the meat mixture from the pan.
4. Remove the onion and mushroom mixture from the Courant.
7. Puncture the wraps with a fork to prevent them from puffing up.
6. Place the vegetables in a bowl. Mash them with a potato masher, leaving the mixture slightly chunky.
3. Transfer to a strainer and set aside.
8. Fill one side of each wrap with the beef mixture, then fold the wrap, crepe style. 9. Wipe out the Courant to clean it, and add approximately two teaspoons of oil. Fry filled wrap until crisp on both sides. Serve with extra marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
5. Add the frozen vegetables to the Courant, along with 1 teaspoon salt. Add garlic powder and black pepper, and saute for 15 minutes.
7. Add half the sautéed onions and mushrooms, along with the eggs and bread crumbs. Mix to combine. 8. Spray a baking pan with oil. 9. Form vegetable patties. Bake at 350° for 50 minutes to one hour. 10. Top with reserved onions and mushrooms.

Have you ever been ensnared in city traffic as a VIP and his entourage blared sirens, ignored traffic lights and caused every ordinary vehicle to stop in its tracks? Transporting presidents safely is a critical mission, a display of capability, and a most amazing spectacle. How do the players in this patriotic parade plan the procession? How do they get every detail down pat and still make the move seem effortless? With so much happening at once, how do they ensure the safety of the most powerful and targeted man on the go?
THE PROCESSION

On average, the presidential motorcade today involves a fleet of some 40 to 50 vehicles — and each vehicle has a specific name and explicit purpose. Let’s hop onto the motorcade, virtually, and see who takes part and what their duties are. As this is a high-security Secret Service affair, get ready for some code language! Minutes ahead of the entourage, the ROUTE CAR scouts the area and reports relevant intelligence to the upcoming motorcade. The PILOT CAR does the same, but just one minute or mere seconds in advance of the procession. Then come the SWEEPERS — local police cars and motorcycles — who close the streets and clear the way. The focal vehicle, the one carrying the president, has been named STAGECOACH. It is followed closely by one or more identical limos, known as SPARES. These are meant to confuse the crowd as to which car contains the president. As the motorcade moves ahead, the Spares deftly crisscross with Stagecoach. These cars even have identical plates, making it super challenging for a potential attacker to discern which vehicle is the bona fide transport vehicle. If something were to go wrong with Stagecoach, a Spare could also be used as backup. The first line of defense follows immediately behind Stagecoach and the Spares. HALFBACK is typically a Chevrolet Suburban with police lights and Secret Service agents riding inside. A window is usually open, with at least one of the agents, conspicuously armed, looking out. Next comes WATCHTOWER, a countermeasures vehicle. It actively jams communications and remote detonating devices. SUPPORT vehicles carry VIPs, such as Cabinet members, and CONTROL vehicles transport top military aid. CAT, or Counter Assault Team vehicles, are also called Hawkeye Renegades. These are usually black Suburbans with police lights. More noticeably, officers often hang out of the back, holding rifles at the ready. They are meant to open direct fire in case of attack or, at the very least, give the president time to escape the scene. The Intelligence Division, or ID car, follows. Those inside are responsible for providing overall intelligence. They try to identify security issues before they crop up, communicating with surveillance
units both on the ground and overhead. The black work truck that tails is the HAZMAT, or Hazardous Materials Mitigation Unit. It has sensors and equipment to detect nuclear, biological or chemical weapons. It’s also used for storage and other confidential functions. You’ll easily identify the PRESS VANS. With large cameras and wires, they house the media team.
DID YOU KNOW? When the president visits multiple destinations in one day, separate motorcade detachments need to be deployed to each one!
ROADRUNNER is a mobile command and control vehicle. With a large array of satellite communications equipment prominently displayed along its roof, it’s one of the most noticeable vehicles in the entourage. The president and all motorcade participants are connected to the world through the voice, internet and video communications it provides. There is always an AMBULANCE somewhere at the back of the procession. It is primarily for the president’s safety, but is also ready to assist others in the event of an attack. The REAR GUARD is a host of police cars and motorcycles, intended to serve as a buffer from behind. And, of course, it’s impossible to ignore the OVERWATCH. Helicopters from the Coast Guard or U.S. Customs and Border Protection are provided by the Department of Homeland Security. They guard the entire procession with a bird’s-eye view. There you have it… a rolling White House on the roads, as safe and secure as human defense measures can get.

THE SECURITY DETAIL Each motorcade movement is unique, but they all share the need for precise planning and intense coordination. The Secret Service is responsible for the safety

of these risky convoys. Top-level, highly trained personnel are entrusted with the task. They go through months of rigorous instruction and maintain continuous drills and training even while in service. Much of these assignments remains confidential. The Secret Service won’t divulge exactly how many vehicles are involved or how many Stagecoach lookalikes are included in a motorcade detail. The Secret Service agents chart the routes in advance, in cooperation with local police forces. Factors such as sunshine potentially disturbing their vision are taken into consideration. They also plan escape routes in advance. Perhaps rule number one is “Do not stop!” Once the motorcade is in motion, it moves at top speed and won’t slow down even if danger is spotted. In locales where a passing presidential motorcade is not an everyday occurrence, the streets are usually closed down completely. In places like Washington, D.C., where such escorts are commonplace, traffic need not be stopped entirely; locals are aware that when the alarms are sounded, they must move aside to make way for a procession. On foreign soil, a third option is often implemented: a stealthy approach. Without bells and whistles, the VIPs simply zoom by silently. Sometimes mock motorcades hit the streets in advance. Tom Dorsch, a former diplomatic security special agent with the State Department, has trained protective services in places like Iraq, Liberia and Colombia. He explains that this way, “you keep the bad guys guessing about the exact location of a VIP in the event of a car bomb or ambush.” Then you have the last-minute, spontaneous trips. What if the president decides to venture out on a whim? How does the Secret Service pull it off without all the planning? It may be a security hassle, but there’s good news, Dorsch says. “If the VIP makes a sudden change, if you didn’t know that it was coming, chances are the bad guys didn’t know either.”

BACKING UP The first president to use an automobile in official capacity was Teddy Roosevelt, who paraded down the streets of Hartford, Connecticut, in 1902. William Howard Taft purchased four cars and converted the White House stables to an automobile garage.
DID YOU KNOW? The Beast isn’t used only for local trips. When the president travels, he takes his beloved car along with him! The Beast and other important vehicles in the convoy are loaded onto a gigantic Boeing Globemaster C-17 military aircraft and flown to the destination ahead of the president’s arrival.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first to use a Secret Service–specified armor-plated vehicle, thanks to security concerns after the devastating attack on Pearl Harbor. Security features were enhanced with each new state car. In a museum in Little Rock, Arkansas, you can see the exterior of Bill Clinton’s Cadillac. Curiously, it hasn’t been demolished, but even the museum staff are unable to open its doors without Secret Service assistance. President Obama made history with the debut of “Ground Force One,” a pair of heavily armored buses. These were drawn into service to enable the president to travel more efficiently in rural areas, especially when many stops were scheduled. Obama used them on his campaign tours across America during the 2012 election campaign.

some safety threats and breaches come into sight. Back in 1958, when Richard Nixon was vice president, he was on a goodwill tour in South America. While his motorcade drove through Caracas, Venezuela, it was attacked by a mob who threw stones and hurled fists at the car’s windows. Some Secret Service agents and aides were hurt in the attack, but Nixon himself remained unharmed. That was on foreign soil and consequences were minimal. Then the peril came closer… November 21, 1963, began like any other day. President John F. Kennedy was on a political fundraising tour of Texas, accompanied by his wife Jacqueline and other VIPs. As he sat in the backseat of his custom-built convertible, a bullet pierced his neck from behind. Another bullet hit his head. The motorcade rushed to the hospital, but the president was already dead. Kennedy’s motorcade did have security detail. In fact, as soon as the bullets were fired,

one Secret Service agent riding in the car directly behind the Kennedys jumped out to shield the first lady. In a separate car, another Secret Service agent threw himself above Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. One lesson learned from the affair led to the ban of open-topped vehicles. Presidents began driving in fully closed, heavily armored cars only. More recently, alleged attacks and unintentional accidents involving the presidential motorcade have been thwarted successfully by Secret Service agents. President Trump’s motorcade itself has been targeted on numerous occasions — in Springfield, Missouri; Palm Beach County, Florida; and Lee County, Alabama, to name a few. Some incidents were deliberate, others accidental. Indeed, the threat seems real.
The Beast with C-5 Galaxy transports in the background.
THE BEAST On September 24, 2018, a brand-new presidential state car hit the roads, taking President Trump on a trip to New York City. It looks like an ultra-luxurious Cadillac, but is simultaneously a heavily armored car. General Motors produced the limousine at a cost of more than $1.5 million. The Cadillac hybrid is tremendous and tall and weighs between 15,000 and 20,000 pounds! The exterior walls are eight inches thick, the multi-layered windows are five inches thick, and the doors weigh as much as those of a Boeing 757 aircraft. It is fitted with security features such as bullet-proof glass, state-of-the-art connectivity, an independent air supply to thwart a chemical attack, and even a supply of the president’s blood type. The car is oversized and extremely heavy, making it tricky to maneuver. For security purposes, the exact details of the safety features on the president’s car are not made known to the public. In fact, the Secret Service usually dismantles and destroys decommissioned state cars, lest their security secrets leak to the public. The last presidential car, which operated from 2009 until 2018, was nicknamed the Beast. This new version retains that name and also goes by “Cadillac One” and “Stagecoach,” as all executive models do.

It has produced presidents, generals, Medal of Honor recipients, and many notable American heroes. For over 200 years, West Point has symbolized U.S. Army excellence, as it develops the future leaders of the most powerful military in the world.
About 20 miles north of Monsey, on a beautiful site overlooking the Hudson River, sits one of the most prestigious military academies in the world, commonly known as West Point. Officially titled the United States Military Academy, the campus continues to produce some of the brightest military and civilian minds in our country.
While most readers instinctively associate West Point with the U.S. Army, it is in essence a college — and a really good one, at that. Every year, about 1,300 young students are admitted to this highly sought-after academy, approximately 1,000 of whom will eventually graduate. Among these students are 60 foreigners who will proudly take their acquired skills back to their home countries. West Point is also home to an active military post, making it the oldest continuously operated Army installation in the country.

Students, known as cadets, learn much more than just military skills at West Point. Training at the academy includes a broad list of academic studies, as well as a requirement to partake in collegiate sports. West Point’s rigid training instills in its graduates character, leadership skills and professional excellence. Upon graduating, cadets are commissioned as officers in the U.S Army for a minimum of five years, after which graduates can return to civilian life. Most, however, do dedicate their lives to military service.
General Washington referred to the site as “the most important post in America,” and indeed, it never fell into British hands.
MILITARY HISTORY West Point’s history dates back to the Revolutionary War, when the Continental Army realized the strategic necessity of controlling this plateau overlooking the Hudson River. George Washington’s army was determined to prevent the British from controlling the river and essentially dividing the newly formed republic in two. They fortified this site on the west side of the river (hence the name West Point) and extended a 100-ton iron chain across the water as a barrier to enemy passage. General Washington referred to the site as
88 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 4, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
“the most important post in America,” and indeed, it never fell into British hands. But there were a couple of close calls, most notably when infamous traitor Benedict Arnold conspired with the British to hand over the Hudson Highlands to America’s enemies. The West Point fort was actually named Fort Arnold for a time — until his treasonous plans were uncovered and it was renamed Fort Clinton. In 1802, President Jefferson signed the bill establishing the United States Military Academy at the site. The nation’s leaders agreed that the country needed its own military and civil engineers who could help build the fledgling country, and West Point was established to that end. In the early 1800s, West Point graduates were behind the construction of most bridges, railways and roads in America. Over the ensuing decades, West Point greatly improved its military training. By the time of the Civil War, nearly all leaders in both the Confederate and
Union armies were graduates of West Point. Amazingly, they commanded both sides in 55 of the Civil War’s 60 major battles, and one side in the other five. During World War I, the academy had to accelerate the graduation of its cadets to meet the need for leadership on the battlefield. World War II saw the army increase the number of cadets, and again, graduates were forced to wrap up their training early.
COVETED ADMISSIONS As mentioned, the United States Military Academy is a college, and it operates similarly to top mainstream colleges in some ways, and very differently in other ways. Its application process relies on traditional measures like SAT grades, with a unique wrinkle: Applicants from the general public must also receive a nomination recommendation by the president, vice president, a U.S. senator or a local congressman. Most applicants contact

their local representative first, and their office will look into the young student’s qualifications and often hold an in-person interview before providing a coveted Letter of Recommendation. The factors that determine whether to give such a nomination are similar to what the Academy looks for in its cadets. Factors such as academic achievements, extra-curricular activities, leadership skills, physical abilities, character and motivation are considered during this competitive
process. There are also spots available for service members, children of those who died in action, children of Medal of Honor recipients and more. Even those who are highly qualified face daunting odds. The acceptance rate is only about 10%! Why do people try so hard to get in? First, West Point is free — if you don’t count serving in the military for five years, that is. In a country where going to a top college for four years can cost north of $200,000, this is an attractive option for many. Second, and

leaving aside the military aspect for a moment, West Point is a great college, and its graduates generally go on to do very well in life. West Point has become a status symbol indicating ability, character and leadership.

West Point is one of five U.S. Service Academies — there’s one for each military branch — and has greatly influenced how military schools around the world operate. It might be exciting to read about, but being a West Point cadet is very demanding, and a number of lucky applicants actually end up dropping out. The schedule is rigid and packed with classes, training and activities. Everyone must join a number of its sports teams, which adds further commitments year-round. Another thing that sets West Point apart is its Honor Code, which states simply: “A Cadet will not lie, cheat or steal, nor tolerate those who do.” If someone
WHAT’S IT LIKE AT WEST POINT? BY: RUCHY REESE
Newcomers to West Point are referred to as “plebes*” — a term that constantly reminds them of their low position on the totem pole. Everything about the first six weeks, which is referred to as “Beast,” is designed to be difficult and/ or demoralizing. This is done specifically to test the stamina of the would-be soldiers. Not everyone can handle the stress, and every year, new cadets drop out of the program. The mornings begin at 5 a.m. with physical training, and then it’s on to a grueling day of learning how to become a soldier, with the day only wrapping up late at night. There are lessons in military marching, how to properly salute, how to dress and maintain one’s uniform, how to follow commands, how to handle firearms, and much more. There’s also a tremendous amount of physical training that continues throughout the day. To compound matters, the “plebes” have instructors and commanders over them who often raise their voices, screaming unpleasantries at the new cadets — oftentimes standing mere inches from a cadet’s face. And the cadet, despite the verbal beatings, must show no emotion and stand perfectly still. The new cadets who make it through Beast wrap up the six-week period with a twelve-mile march — all while dressed in full combat wear and packs full of gear. And this takes place in the heat of summer! The reward for putting up with the constant mental, emotional and physical stress comes in the form of a ceremonial march a few days later on a West Point field, welcoming them into the Corp of Cadets. It’s an emotionally charged event, and the cadets are allowed to see their families for the first time since Beast began. They’re then allowed one night away from base, but must be back bright and early the next morning to
begin their first year as an official West Point cadet.
RULES THE PLEBES MUST PLAY BY Hierarchy is a significant factor in the military. Firstyear cadets are given a plethora of rules to keep them humble. Here are a few: • Plebes may not speak when outside. • Plebes must set up tables at meals and serve the upperclassmen their food. • Before eating, plebes must ask permission of upperclassmen and tell them how many days their superiors have until graduation. • Plebes are responsible to take out the garbage around the campus. • Plebes must use any moment spent waiting to review the West Point manual. They must memorize even such trivial information as how many lights are in the dining hall!
TRAINING West Point is a military garrison in every sense, and the training that cadets receive is on par with training found anywhere else, if not better. Some of the training includes a physically challenging obstacle course that requires the cadets to scale great heights, balance on tiny ledges, and jump feet-first through dangling tires. These exercises help the cadets to become battle-ready and use their bodies to the fullest. It’s important for soldiers to be prepared for any event and any environment. Therefore, there’s also training for combat swimming that involves plunging into a swimming pool fully clothed, boots included. Some of the required jumps are from the high dive! There are also, of course, many courses on weapons training, military tactics, military law, combat and so much more. *The term “plebes” is etymologically rooted in ancient Rome. The Romans divided society into social classes, with the plebeians being of the lowest segment of society.

ing is generally done in a designated area where the cadets will spend hours marching back and forth, until they’ve paid their dues to society... West Point classes cover a variety of fields, including mechanical engineering, physics, chemistry, law, psychology, data science and about 40 other academic majors. Many of these classes are taught by civilian professors even though West Point is a military establishment. Then there’s the best in military training, of course — which also includes instilling leadership skills in future Army officers. West Point has long been a great source of pride for the U.S. Army. While some have wondered whether its existence is still necessary in the 21st century, there’s no denying the success it has had in producing disciplined U.S. Army officers with the physical, moral and ethical character that the U.S. Army has come to expect in its ranks.

If found in violation, they can face punishment or even be expelled from the Academy entirely! For more minor infractions, one form of penalty is what’s called “punishment tours” or “hours.” Cadets literally have to walk, all dressed up and holding their rifle, for the number of hours determined by what they did wrong (think of it as a writing assignment penalty in school). Having an unclean room can result in a few hours of walking, while penalties can range up to 80 hours in more severe cases. The walk-

By: Y. Blooming One can’t write about Boro Park without mentioning “Kollel Grocery,” the supermarket that has for decades been the paradigm of grocery shopping for families in the community. Founded by the renowned man of chesed Mr. Moshe Binik, a”h, the name KRM is an abbreviation for Kollel, Rabbanim and Mishpachos, as the store was then exclusively geared to families with limited means. In the ‘90s, the store began serving the community at large while continuing to assist families with its affordable pricing. Yanky Goldstein is the popular manager at KRM Supermarket, and his efforts have helped the store cement its distinguished reputation as Boro Park’s premier family supermarket. How long have you been at KRM?
This Week:
Yanky Goldstein MANAGER, KRM (Kollel) Supermarket
98 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 4, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
I got this job as floor manager twenty years ago, and I haven’t had any boring days since... For a number of years I worked the afternoon and evening shifts, but I’ve since taken over the opening shift in the morning, which offers a different set of challenges. What are your responsibilities as manager?
My job covers everything related to the customers’ shopping experiences. I have to make sure the registers are staffed, the shelves stocked, the orders processed, and the deliveries sent out. Although I keep in touch with the vendors, my focus is on the end users and doing whatever it takes to make shopping here a pleasant experience. If it requires manning a register until more workers arrive, so be it. If I have to help a customer locate an item, that’s fine as well. As far as shoppers are concerned, I’m the face of the store, and it’s up to my team and myself to make sure they get what they need.
We are excited to present another installment of our new weekly column where we give readers a glimpse into the lives of notable members of the community. As Boro Park’s premier weekly, we hope that this feature will help unite local residents on a more personal level. You know about them; now get to know them.
What notable shifts have taken place throughout your two decades in the industry?
Our supermarket had already changed from being a niche store for bnei Torah and large families before I got started. However, I’ve noticed that throughout the years, customers developed an appreciation for attractive displays, better presentation and white-glove treatment. We have improved our selection since then, but our core business model has stayed the same: offering affordable shopping for local families. And not only don’t we compromise on service, but we go above and beyond to accommodate everyone’s needs with patience and a smile. What, if anything, has remained from the store’s earlier capacity as a destination for families with lower incomes?
Well, everyone knows about our low prices, but it goes beyond that. People might not know the reason our glass grape juice bottles are so cheap, but it goes back to when Mr. Binik, a”h, felt that this Shabbos staple should be available to everyone. When Kedem had to raise their prices on the glass bottles, he insisted on keeping the previous selling price, and to this day, the price has not been raised! Some of the store’s profits used to support a Kollel Hora’ah that was located across the street. The kollel has since moved to Flatbush, but we still support the respected talmidei chachamim dedicating their lives to Torah. We had a funny experience approximately five years ago, when a man from Manhattan walked in with his decades-old card, asking if it’s still valid. He was pleasantly surprised to learn that everyone is now a member! There have been a number of newcomers to this field since you got started. How do you maintain an edge in the line?
When I mention servicing shoppers, there are tangible things we do that make a difference. I’ll give an example everyone can relate to: KRM today has eighteen to twenty vans doing deliveries every day. The small fee we charge does not even cover half of the expenses, which means we’re running an entire separate business operation exclusively to service
people. The maintenance, insurance, software and employee expenses, as well as the complicated logistics that go into making this happen, are all worth it so we can provide a service we are happy to offer to local families. We recently added a state-of-the-art tracking system in part so that people know when to expect their order and can plan accordingly. There’s another thing I should mention: I am one of three floor managers who are constantly available around the store, because we want to hear from our customers and be present to assist them. We’re a large community, ka”h. What is your relationship with the shoppers?
I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I feel like I know people’s needs instinctively. One funny example: At this point I can often catch a simple mistake in an order and say, “The Friedmans only order diet soda, this is wrong.” We have well over a hundred employees and many thousands of customers, but our aim is to make each one feel valued and respected. How did the recent COVID-19 crisis affect your operations?
As an essential business, we were open throughout, and we were incredibly fortunate that our team never had to call in sick. We had a number of customers who had to be isolated and called in to have their orders done for them, and for a while we had to deal with some shortages, but baruch Hashem, we were able to continue providing for the community. Since we’re on this topic, I want to remind shoppers to please wear masks when in the store. Whatever your beliefs are, we have workers of all ages and backgrounds, and they need to feel safe. This is government mandated and a small sacrifice to make to ensure that we can stay open. As a public face, do people often contact you for assistance outside of the workplace?
We have other managers during the hours I’m not there, so for the most part, it isn’t necessary. I often have customers coming over in shul with comments or questions, but that’s to be expected.

How we marvel at the tech guy! The wonder when he maneuvers some wires, utilizes his trusty tools, and saves the day on many occasions. We can all probably join the discussion of: “My washing machine stopped working…” or, “My central air conditioning wouldn’t turn on,” and of course the story ends with, “and then the repairman arrived and saved the day.” Often a machine malfunctions, but is in great shape and a definitive candidate for repair. Perhaps it’s a fuse or a minor part that can be restored easily. Indeed, the same holds true for human function. When an adult or child finds himself in a seemingly untenable position, there is no cause for panic. Whether their day/ life/project/schedule is stagnating or even spiraling out of control, a simple fix might be the solution. In fact, he may possess brilliance or unusual capabilities, but just needs some rewiring in his executive functioning. Sometimes it’s coaching, sometimes it’s the careful administration of the right medication — but there is always a solution; there is always hope. 102 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 4, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
ELISHEVA’S STORY: Interestingly, I have always felt a kinship with before-and-after profiles. I don’t know if it’s because they deliver a message of hope or because they make my heart twinge with longing, but it is most definitely magical to see messy shelves turn into a Tupperware-worthy cabinet, or to witness a tiny, dilapidated home getting bulldozed to the ground and a new luxury apartment house duly appearing. Yet there is a before-and-after profile that by far surpasses the transformation of a simple cabinet or palatial home. It is a before-and-after that requires inner work; it is the shifting of a life lived by the motto of “I am surviving” to a purposeful life lived by the motto of “I am thriving.” The story I am relating is my life
profile, my “before” and my “after.” I hope it will give hope to others and encourage them to seek the help they deserve and live their life to its fullest.
BEFORE: Shmuli was finally diagnosed with ADHD. All the questions about why he doesn’t perform, and why he fidgets and hits and explodes with inappropriate outbursts when I’m trying to clarify a difficult point in the Mishnah, and why he can’t get his stuff together in time... all this can now be clarified with one answer: ADHD. I should probably be glad. When an explanation is attached to a complex situation it makes it more tangible. Suddenly you can feel it in the messy knapsack and blank test papers, you can visualize it in the red-hot incen-
diary temper, and you can definitely taste it in the acrid spoonfuls of bitter disappointment. The guidance counselor offered us some tidbits on Shmuli’s ADHD: “He definitely has potential, and I’m confident that you’ll get to the pot of gold at the end of his rainbow. I think you should team up with a professional to glean more insight and help him reach his goals. The rebbi also has to be on board. I am confident that Shmuli will yet make you very proud.” In our quest to set him up with the right help — only the best would do — we first visited a highly recommended psychiatrist, who prescribed a low dosage of Ritalin to clear Shmuli’s mind from all the fog. Medication is not always necessary, but after a backand-forth between his pediatrician, the rebbi, the guidance counselor and the psychiatrist, it was determined

that in order for Shmuli to acquire new skills, his focus needed to be razorsharp. Now I had to find the right individual to help him acquire and incorporate new skills. After careful deliberation, I contacted an ADHD coach. My husband and I sat down with him for our initial meeting in which he clearly stated his modus operandi: “When a surgeon conducts open-heart surgery, he needs the right team at his side. They all need to be clued in on all medical details and lifesaving procedures to be able to work hand-in-hand for a successful outcome. So, too, we need teamwork. I will conduct a meeting with all the adults who work with Shmuli. They will be our team. ” The ADHD coach met with the rebbi, my son, my husband and myself and offered guidance and clarification. “You are Team Success,” he said. It was also at this particular roundtable meeting that a general system of immediate gratification (daily small presents), role-play, timers, being very specific, making checklists, and more were outlined. Additionally, the coach met with each set of team players individually to outline their role in the process. We were all on board to steer Shmuli to success. When my role in the scheme was delineated, I listened in fascination to the cognitive and emotional effects of ADHD. “ADHD and lack of executive function can manifest itself in lack of working memory, emotional control, self-
monitoring, shifting from one task to another, prioritization and task initiation. But with proper intervention, it is fixable.” When the coach offered his synopsis on ADHD, I felt my cheeks turning red. Suddenly I saw my reflection in the mirror. Aha, so that’s why my life resembles a chaotic schedule and I never get to appointments and obligations on time... I saw my ADHD in the daily tasks that are often left untouched. I saw it in my empty freezer and my lack of planning. I saw it in my running to stores on erev yom tov because I fail to take upcoming events into account. I saw it in my constant state of unpreparedness for routines such as supper, laundry and bedtime. Maybe my son’s diagnosis was a blessing in disguise. Maybe I could also be helped.
Maybe my son’s diagnosis was a blessing in disguise. Maybe I could also be helped.
AFTER: I noticed Shmuli’s test paper on the table, waiting for my husband’s signature. It was almost entirely filled out, and the grade was 89%. A year ago, I would not have believed that Shmuli was capable of such achievement, but with the right intervention, my precious son can succeed. Yes, in the past year he has scaled many mountains. So, who is Shmuli today? He is a lovable friend and brother. Although his temper occasionally flares up, he
Dr. Thomas Brown explains ADHD and executive function using the metaphor of an orchestra without a conductor. “Imagine a symphony orchestra in which each musician plays his or her instrument very well. If there is no conductor to organize the orchestra, to signal the introduction of the woodwinds or the fading out of the strings, or to convey an overall interpretation of the music to all players, the orchestra will not produce good music.” Thankfully, ADHD has been studied extensively, and there are numerous ways to help an individual with ADHD. Children can be guided to acquire the necessary skills through constant practice and role play. And adults, too, who have difficulty with executive function can always reach out or read up on some self-help tips to get their life on track. So now let us all play our unique instruments and join life’s symphony to create beautiful music!

has learned to apologize and acquired a toolbox with techniques on how to self-calm and stop before the “tiny flame” of emotional impulse turns into a major explosion. He is a remarkable student; Shmuli sits up front so that his rebbi can help him regain focus and offer explicit direction. His IQ borders on genius level, and he is finally grasping and relishing his learning. And finally, he is a model of what hard work and grit can accomplish; with his lists and timers, today Shmuli accomplishes more than his peers. And by extension, I can be proud of my “after” profile. On the home front, my life is way more organized. I can even take on hobbies and get together with friends more often, because I have my life under control and know how to initiate and complete tasks. It is important to know that ADHD can also wear adult clothing, and its prevalence among our adult population is unfortunately underestimated. By now I have sought some help for myself and can proudly relate that I’ve implemented some changes (such as lists, timers and preplanning) in my daily life, and I am amazed by its ripple effects. Now, on to my next task… As one of a select few coaches worldwide with the designation of PCAC (Professional Certified ADHD Coach) and an ACC-credentialed life Coach from the ICF (the International Coaching Federation), Aviva Nirenberg has guided her many motivated clients on the pathway to success. RULES, RULES, RULES! Being in the military comes with a multitude of rules. The Army — which is only one branch of the U.S. military — has a dress code book that’s a whopping 300+ pages long! There are also rules about behavior while in uniform that aren’t included in that edition. These rules cover everything from what to wear, and how and when to wear it, all the way to how to care for it. Some of the more interesting ones include: While in uniform, a service member may not eat, drink or talk on a cell phone while walking. Hands are not to be placed in one’s pockets, aside from quickly putting something in or taking something out. Sunglasses may not be worn indoors. Hydration systems, which allow the soldiers to drink hands-free, come with the rule that soldiers may not “let the drinking tube hang from their mouths when the device is not in use.” Hoods may be worn when needed; however, when not in use, they are to be zippered into the storage compartment and hidden from view. Though sleeves may be rolled up in certain circumstances, rules govern exactly how many rolls may be made and how many inches from the elbow one may roll up the sleeves. The combat uniform may not be starched or dry cleaned under any circumstances as it will affect its durability. It must be washed in cold water with mild detergent and dried on tumble dry at temperatures not to exceed 130 degrees. Any time a hat is worn, the hair must be tucked in neatly, with no hair sticking out in front. Caps must be worn with the bill front and center, and berets must feature the soldier’s insignia over the left eye.
110 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
The standard combat uniform is pretreated with permethrin, providing protection from disease-carrying insects.
IT IS ILLEGAL FOR A MEMBER OF THE MILITARY TO WEAR AWARDS THAT HE DID NOT EARN. IT IS ALSO ILLEGAL FOR A MEMBER OF ONE BRANCH OF THE MILITARY TO WEAR THE UNIFORM OF ANOTHER BRANCH. CIVILIANS, TOO, ARE PROHIBITED FROM WEARING MILITARY GEAR.

TYPES OF UNIFORMS There actually isn’t a single Army uniform. Different situations call for different modes of dress. SERVICE UNIFORM
This is the equivalent of the business suit in the army. It’s worn on typical work days by soldiers in professional environments.
COMBAT UNIFORM
This is what soldiers located in combat zones wear. There are differently colored camo patterns for different terrains.
MESS DRESS
For more formal and ceremonial occasions, soldiers get fancied up in their dress blues. (There is a white summer version, as well.)
PHYSICAL TRAINING UNIFORM
For sweaty exercises, you’ll find service members working out in these. SERVICE UNIFORM

COMBAT BOOTS
ORNAMENTS
Combat boots have come a long way! In the 1820s, American soldiers were issued boots that could be worn on either foot. They weren’t very comfortable. Over the years, however, the Army invested incredible energy researching and developing the most superior footwear in terms of safety and comfort.
Ribbons and medals are used in the Army to signify the achievements of a soldier or his unit, such as having participated in a specific battle, having engaged in an act of valor, for having been wounded in the line of duty, or for having accomplished something notable while on a mission.
Nowadays, different versions of combat boots are made for hot weather, temperate weather, cold weather and extremely cold weather. Each boot weighs between 2 and 2.5 pounds, depending on the make and size, and is at least 8 inches high to provide proper support and protection for the wearer.*
Aside from ribbons and medals, other insignia tell the story of who the officer is: his rank, in which unit he serves, if he’s been deployed overseas, what types of specialized training he has, and so on. There are very specific rules about insignia placement on uniforms.
Spit-shining army boots went the way of the dodo in the early 2000s when low-maintenance tancolored combat boots replaced the classic black versions. * This aspect of the uniform, as well as all wear and appearance of U.S. Army uniforms, is governed in accordance with regulation DA 670-1.
A tremendous thank-you to Major Mike Young for contributing to this article.

פרשת וירא
How long will we have to wait until we get into the master’s room? I have no more patience!
Don’t ask questions, man. If you want a generous donation, you’ll have to sit and wait patiently.
Sit, sit! Why are you getting up? Patience pays off. How much will I get here?
It depends on his mood.
Hey, you must see these dishes! Wow! I’ve never seen such magnificent pieces!
Wow! Never seen anything like it!
Look at that one there…
I’m coming, I’m coming...
Shall we open it?
Let’s open it! We’ll just give a peek and close it.
114 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
And we’ll feel it with our hand and hold it for just a second to see how heavy it is.
AHHH!
What’s this noise? Oh no, the most expensive dish shattered to pieces!
BOOM!
Who did that?
Servants! Go out and search for the offenders!
Have you seen someone running out of our master’s house?
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US? “…Run for your life, and don’t look back” (19:17). Lot was just like the other Sedomites, and he was saved only in Avraham Avinu’s zechus. Therefore, when the malachim rescued him from the city, they said, “Don’t look back,” because if he would, the destructive forces would realize he is also guilty like the rest of the Sedomites. (Source: Dubno Maggid) Of course, the story above is for illustration only. What does a Yid do if he accidentally breaks a dish? Of course, he apologizes and finds out how he can fix his mistake. The paupers in this story will also surely regret their escape and return to the master’s house to admit their mistake and pay for the damage.

Stop!
Just keep walking and don’t look back! If you turn around the servants will see you’re afraid someone’s after you, and that we’re the culprits!
