Q&A
Q What is the difference between a lab grown diamond and a regular diamond mined from the ground? A Diamond is composed of 3 natural gases that were heated up by brias haolom to 3 thousand degree celsius and when cooled down resulted in a diamond. The Lab diamond ingredients consist of the very same heated gases but are created in a lab. Q Can you detect a difference in a lab diamond versus a mined diamond? A The difference can only be identified in a high end laboratory using very expensive microscopes. To a professional jeweler using his loups and electronic testers it cannot be identified since the basic ingredients are the same in a Lab diamond as is in a mined diamond. Q Are the lab diamonds classified as diamonds? A Yes. the Federal Trade Commission has ruled that since the ingredients are the same in lab grown and mined diamonds, therefore it is classified as a diamond created in a lab. It has the same hardness and durability of a mined diamond. Q What is the acceptance of the consumers for the lab grown diamonds? A 70% of all millennials already use Lab Grown diamonds for their engagement rings and is sold by every major Jewelry chain across the US such as Zales, Macys, Berkshire, Hathaway & Helzbergs. Q Do they last the same as a mined diamond? A Lab grown diamonds have been around for over 60 years and used as a replacement for industrial diamonds where hardness of diamond is needed. The updated science has allowed the production of gem quality lab diamonds.

APPROVED BY ALL (Re: Easy Does It, Issue 58) I tried the veggie burgers for supper as soon as I saw the recipe in your paper, and I’ve got to hand it to you: Every member of my family of picky eaters approved of these fried goodies. For myself, wanting to cut back on oil, I baked the burgers in the oven, using oil spray at the bottom as well as spraying the tops. They were also delicious! G.H.

We try harder...
(Re: A Guiding Hand, Issue 57) I was taken aback by the contents of this article. First I would like to make the readers aware what rheumatoid arthritis is. It’s an autoimmune condition where the body makes a “mistake” and attacks healthy joints. This inflammatory disease causes pain and swelling and also fatigue, but it’s not a death sentence. The medications to treat it are really very effective and are also safe for long-term use. The consequence of neglecting to treat the disease, however, can be damaging to the limbs and internal organs, chas v’shalom. Rheumatoid arthritis can be triggered by several factors, not only stress. Dr. Sarno’s program was designed for people who have unexplained chronic pain and it becomes obvious that their stress is

the cause of their pain and not an obvious medical condition. Of course, stress doesn’t ever enhance anyone’s health, but if you review Dr. Sarno’s article again, you will see that he gives an important reminder: “It is important to see a medical professional before starting this treatment approach to rule out any serious medical condition.” It is pretty dangerous to drop treatment and follow a program against the advice of a licensed doctor. I am writing this response because I know that many people face this challenge now, or may grapple with it one day, and I don’t want them to be afraid to treat their children properly. Of course, along with medication, it’s perfectly fine to adopt healthy eating habits, reduce use of chemicals in the house, and reduce stress. Some autoimmune disorders can go into remission, and with a doctor’s guidance, the medications can be reduced or even terminated. I wish to remain, Anonymous THE BORO PARK VIEW RESPONDS: The protagonist in the story was suspected to have juvenile idiopathic arthritis, which is a condition different from rheumatoid arthritis. With both disorders, and all other medical issues, we encourage readers to consult qualified medical professionals before attempting any method of treatment.
DELIVERANCE THROUGH DR. SARNO (Re: A Guiding Hand, Issue 57) After reading the story about Dr. Sarno’s method, I would like to take this opportunity to publicize my own story. Five years ago, after I began suffering from terrible headaches, I was diagnosed with Lyme disease. The headaches were so debilitating that I couldn’t func-

A HIGH-CALIBER ADDITION (Re: Entering With Awe) My husband and I just wanted to mention how much we are enjoying the series on kedushas beis haknesses. It is unusual to find writing of this caliber. Additionally, since most of the articles in family magazines are geared toward recipes and parenting, it is refreshing to find relevant halachic information presented in an easy-to-read format. Keep on raising the bar for 1080P magazine publishing! Inspired Webcam

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE As avid readers of The Boro Park View, we would like to let you know that your weekly publication is a Samvix masterpiece each week. The ads iCamera are so attractive, and the articles and serial stories are enjoyed by all. Even the Inbox and the photos in the back are interesting, and we clip and save many of your recipes. There’s really something for each member of our family to appreciate! The kids turn to the comic section and the coloring pages. The teenagers enjoy the games and love searching for the nine-letter Boggle words. The sudoku and Boggle games are enjoyed by the adults, too, but we find the search for the nine-letter words not challenging enough. We’d love to see longer words that are hidden a bit better for a more stimulating game. Wishing you much success and lots of blessings, The Odess Family

WEEK 8:
ENTRY If there’s one halacha that really brings home what a beis knesses is all about, this has got to be it. You are not allowed to walk into a beis knesses unless you have an acceptable reason for doing so. Forget talking about your business or throwing a party in a shul. We’re talking about merely setting foot inside. Don’t have an acceptable reason for entering? Please stay outside. This halacha, written by the Rambam and codified by the Mishnah Berurah,[1] Chayei Adam and others, sounds rather extreme. What’s the big deal if I want to just walk in? I’m not doing anything wrong or disrespectful. Yet, putting our perspectives into focus, we can understand this quite logically. Focus for a moment on the Beis Hamikdash. We know that the nerve center of the Mikdash, the Kodesh Kedashim, was pretty much entirely off-limits. Only one man could enter, only one time a year, and only for a very specific purpose. The next level was the Kodesh, home to the Shulchan, Menorah and Mizbei’ach Hazahav. Who entered this area? True, entry was not limited to the Kohen Gadol, but only the kohanim who were entering to perform specific tasks could enter, and only at the time they were performing those tasks. Entry just to “check it out”? Absolutely not — and quite understandably. This isn’t your living room. It’s the CEO’s private office. It’s Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s home. Don’t come barging in unless you’re here for a very good reason. The Beis Hamikdash, scaled-down, is our mikdash — and the way we view and act with the two is very much the same. When
walking into your local shul, picture yourself walking into the Kodesh. That’s what you’re actually doing, and doing so requires a valid reason.[2] What constitutes an acceptable reason for entry? Obviously, the first answer is the performance of our avodah within, both via tefillah as well as by learning Torah. Additionally, one may enter for the purpose of performing a mitzvah, provided that the mitzvah must be performed in the beis knesses. For example: Peering through the doorway of your shul, you see a needy individual collecting tzedakah, and you would like to contribute something to the cause. You are heading out to your car, and you’d need to wait until the individual emerges. In this case, it is entirely justifiable to enter. If, however, the individual is already heading out of the shul, and it’s just a matter of your walking in versus his walking out, there would be no justification to enter. Suppose you want to walk in for any simple, run-of-themill reason. Not learning, not davening and not for any other mitzvah purpose, just for a personal matter. For instance, you forgot your pen at your seat and want to go retrieve it. Or perhaps you want to tell a friend sitting inside that you’re interested in meeting up with him later. Or you want to check the zmanim chart to see the time for Mincha next Shabbos. These types of reasons are not a form of avodah and do not justify entering. Now what?
The solution for these scenarios is to repurpose your reason for entering. This can be accomplished by simply learning a little bit or by saying a pasuk while inside. True, you’re going to get your pen, but you’re also going to learn. You do have an adequate reason to enter. That which you’d like to accomplish while you are inside does not negate the learning you are doing. THE GUIDELINES FOR DOING THIS ARE AS FOLLOWS: • If entering a beis knesses for a personal purpose, one should learn something small yet significant. Acceptable possibilities include reciting a pasuk, a mishnah or a halacha. This should be done verbally. If, for whatever reason, one cannot do so, the next best solution would be to ask another person to tell him a pasuk or a Torah thought. If this, too, is not possible, one could, as a last resort, simply pause in a standstill, or sit down, for a few moments. The logic for this is that merely being in a shul is something laudatory and a mitzvah, a concept we express daily with the words “Ashrei yoshvei veisecha — Praiseworthy are those who rest in Your home.” While ranking below actual Torah or tefillah in a shul, a deliberate pause in shul qualifies as a mitzvah and justifies entry.[3]
IN SUMMATION: 1. One may not set foot inside a shul unless entering for the purpose of davening or learning inside. One may enter for a different mitzvah purpose, provided the mitzvah needs to be performed in the beis knesses. 2. One who wants to enter for any other reason or personal matter, and has no viable way to accomplish what he needs without entering, can do so by learning something upon entering. This should be done verbally and immediately upon entry, before tending to other matters. One unable to verbalize a Torah thought can suffice with deliberately pausing in place or sitting for a few seconds.

• The learning should be done immediately upon entry, prior to calling the friend, retrieving the item or doing whatever other mundane task one wishes to take care of. By doing this, the entry is legitimized immediately, giving the correct appearance of entering for a valid purpose. Learning only afterward would give the impression that the primary motivation was for one’s personal purpose and the learning only secondary, which is something to be avoided. If, for whatever reason, one did not learn before taking care of one’s personal matter, one should still do so afterward, prior to exiting the shul. Although lacking from the angle of perception, this would still be beneficial in defining the entry as one that included a good cause. • It should be noted that since in reality one is not coming in to settle down and engage in full-fledged learning or davening, and is only employing this solution for the purpose of and to the degree necessary for an entry for a personal reason to be allowed, this solution may be used only when no alternative option is available. For example: You walked out of shul, and then remembered that you need to give an envelope to your chavrusa, who’s still learning inside. If there’s no one around, step inside, learn something, and then go give him the envelope. If, however, there are others around who are going into the shul to daven, you should give the envelope to one of them to deliver. Suppose a person with difficulty bending needs a chair to sit down to tie his shoelace. If there are chairs in the lobby, one should sit there. If there are none, one could enter the shul using the above-mentioned methods.[4] Similarly, one generally cannot enter a shul to escape a torrential downpour, nor can one enter a shul to enjoy the air conditioning on a searing summer day. Insofar as these benefits can be realized in the lobby or side rooms (or at any other nearby location), one cannot enter the shul for primarily personal reasons, even when employing the methods above.[5] Rabbi Elias is a maggid shiur at the Yeshiva Gedola of Hampstead in Montreal, Canada. Rabbi Elias’ daily halacha/parsha shiur, given at the Agudah of Montreal, is available at www.TorahDownloads.com. For questions or comments, you can write to collectedaudio@gmail.com.

This halacha pertains to the actual rooms used for tefillah. Hallways, lobbies and rooms used for other functions generally do not possess kedushas beis haknesses and are not subject to this halacha. [2]
The wording of the Shulchan Aruch strongly indicates that one should not rely on these final two options unless he is incapable of learning or saying a pasuk. In contemporary society, where most people possess at least a basic literacy, one should be employing the first option of verbally expressing a pasuk, halacha or Torah thought. [3]
[4] This matter will be discussed further next week, iy”H, in regard to the laws of kapandarya — using a shul as a shortcut. ]5[

No Easy Answers as Absentee Ballots Prove Crucial in 2020 Nearly a week after voters headed to the polls on Election Day, several local races remain undecided, with approximately 500,000 absentee ballots that have yet to be counted playing an unprecedented pivotal role in determining their outcomes. Boro Park 24 reported that Republican Nicole Malliotakis appears to hold a commanding lead over incumbent Max Rose in the race to represent Staten Islanders and some residents of South Brooklyn in Congress. According to the Associated Press, Malliotakis holds 57.9% of the vote, well ahead of Rose’s 42.1% share, but Rose, who is serving his first term in the House of Representatives, has refused to concede the election. Also still undecided are two Assembly contests, with Republican Mark Szuszkiewicz appearing to be leading Assemblywoman Mathylde Frontus in the race to represent Coney Island in the 46th District, and Republican Anthony DeGuerre running ahead of Assemblyman Michael Cusick. Absentee ballots mailed domestically and postmarked by November 3 have until November 10 to reach the Board of Elections in order to be counted. An extra six-day grace period is extended for ballots mailed by American citizens living overseas or by members of the military.
A Sigh of Relief as Cuomo Downgrades Brooklyn COVID-19 Zones It was good news for residents of Brooklyn’s microclusters for the first time in weeks, when Governor Andrew Cuomo extended his congratulations to Kings County dwellers during an Erev Shabbos press conference held on November 6. With Brooklyn seeing its early October 5.9% positive rate declining to 3.1%, the governor used case prevalence data
52 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / November 11, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
and declining infection rates to reframe the microcluster. Nearly all of Boro Park transitioned from a red zone to a yellow warning area, a move that allowed businesses to reopen, permitted shuls to reopen at 50% capacity, allowed both indoor and outdoor dining with a maximum of four patrons per table, and upped the limits on indoor and outdoor mass gatherings to 25 people. Senator Simcha Felder responded quickly to the news with a pre-Shabbos statement he released, saying, “Following weeks of work with the governor’s office to ease restrictions in the red zone, we are finally turning a corner. There
is some comfort in knowing that many people who live and work in the downgraded area will enjoy some peace of mind this weekend.” Monday morning brought good news for those who remained in the red zone, with the area downgraded to orange status. The shift from red to orange means that businesses, except higher-risk enterprises such as gyms and nail salons, can open once again and attendance in shuls has been boosted to 33% of capacity with a 25-person maximum. Outdoor dining is permitted at restaurants, with no more than four people allowed at each table, but the limit remains at 10 people for both indoor and outdoor mass gatherings. Red-zone restrictions on yeshivos were lifted by the governor last week, allowing them to operate as if they were in orange zones. Other COVID-19 clusters that saw positive changes were those in Orange and Rockland counties, which were both stepped down to yellow, and Far Rockaway, which is no longer considered an area of concern. Citing rising infection
rates, the governor created a new precautionary yellow cluster in Westchester’s Port Chester located on the Connecticut border. Discussing the various changes in COVID-19 rates both domestically and abroad, Cuomo continued hammering home the point that the pandemic’s spread is driven by people’s actions. “How you behave today determines whether or not you get sick tomorrow,” said the governor. “Individual action, it’s all about individual action. If you take it seriously and you act that way, you will be safer. If you are reckless you will be less safe. If you don’t believe there’s a risk, you will be less safe, and we’re seeing that vividly.”
24-Hour Service, 5 Days a Week, as Masbia Switches to Appointment System Responding to an increasing communal need that has had people waiting for hours on food lines, Masbia Soup Kitchens has transitioned to an appointment-only model, serving food pantry clients at all hours of day and night. Masbia’s executive director, Alexander Rappaport, told PIX 11 that Masbia has seen a 500% increase in demand for its services since the pandemic hit, with some people who had previously been soup kitchen donors now availing themselves of its services. Hundreds of appointments are staggered throughout the day so that there is little or no delay for those coming to pick up pantry items and minimal intrusion on local businesses and homeowners. Masbia has also been providing prepared meals to go, with more than 250,000 distributed since the onset of the pandemic, according to Boro Park 24. “So many people are out of work, and all the government benefits ended quite a while ago,” said Rapaport. “This is crunch time.” Masbia’s dining room has been turned into a warehouse, and pantry items are distributed outdoors, with tents set up in case of inclement weather. Rappaport said that Masbia currently needs twelve trailer-loads of food per week to keep up with demand. “Every day the challenge grows, and we try to do that with dignity and respect for everybody.” Assemblyman Simcha Eichstenstein praised Masbia for its ongoing communal support efforts. “This expansion to twenty-four hour operations is going to greatly expand the number of people who can utilize services,” said Eichenstein. “As I have seen for the last many years, Masbia is truly irreplaceable in their service in feeding people who are in need.” To sign up for an appointment, text “FOOD” to 726879.

Recap: Blumi tries to contact U’shemartem for more information about Elisheva’s win, but she finds them evasive. At the hachnasas sefer Torah seudah, she tells Elisheva how much she admires her. In Australia, Joe has employed Leonid of O.S.U. Information Services Ltd. to find out more information about Edo and Gustav, the two Jewish boys who spent the war years in the Lucius Jan Catholic Children’s Home, explaining that he couldn’t do it himself when he visited Bratislava. Yisroel followed two-and-a-half-yearold Nati with his eyes as the child ran. Nati laughed in the direction of his grandfather and then went back to chasing a butterfly. “The sun here on the roof is divine,” Elisheva said, closing her eyes for a moment. “But on my porch, it’s even better.” Her father looked at her tenderly and smiled. “It was nice the other day, wasn’t it?” “Very nice,” he agreed. “Did you get pictures?” “The shul promised to send us some as soon as they get them. I’m most interested in seeing a photo of the dedication, of course.” Her father’s eyes were fixed on a far-off point in the sky, and she pictured the words floating on the clouds there, in the same font and size as they appeared on the wooden sefer Torah case, filling the entire frame: In eternal commemoration of the family members of Reb Yisroel Bentzion, who were killed during the Holocaust, and whose names, dates of death, and place of burial are not known to anyone. “We all enjoyed it, and now the children will play ‘hachnssas sefer Torah’ for the next two months. Right, Yitzy?” “Right,” her son answered eagerly. “Mommy, will you let us use the orange blanket for
the chuppah tomorrow?” The orange blanket was a velvety, shiny blanket that the children especially liked. It had been an integral part of their game the day before, until Elisheva noticed how they stuck the broom and mop sticks into it as poles for the “chuppah,” and she’d told them they couldn’t use it anymore. “We’ll see,” she said. “We love chuppahs, Zeidy,” Yitzy explained. Elisheva got up to catch Nati, who had disappeared from her view. “When Tzippy got married, we played ‘chasunah‘ and ‘chuppah’ a lot afterward.” “And you always made sure to be the chasan,” Shloimy said accusingly. “With Binyamin’s suit jacket.” “Only on the day he was sick,” Yitzy shot back defensively. “And he was sleeping.” Elisheva returned to her chair, gripping Nati’s hand tightly. “What happened when Binyamin was sick?” she asked. “I wore his jacket, and I was the chasan at the wedding,” Yitzy explained. “But it wasn’t such a good game, because you told us to go out of the dining room because he was sleeping there, so we could only play in the hallway and kitchen.” “And I was the photographer!” Four-year-

old Bentzy jumped up. “Right, I was the photographer?” “That’s right,” Yitzy said generously. “And you took pictures of me standing on the chair. But then Chani saw me wearing Binyamin’s jacket, and she yelled at me to take it off because I was ruining it.” “Because she was sweeping the floor,” Bentzy explained sagely. “So I hung it on the towel hook, near the fridge, because I didn’t want to go into the dining room to wake up Binyamin. Wow, do you remember the old kitchen? It was soooo pitzy!” Elisheva looked at her younger children and saw her father’s eyes resting on them as well. Their animated chatter gave him so much nachas; every day that he spent in the nursing home was such a shame. He had to move in with them as quickly as possible. She had his agreement, in theory, baruch Hashem, but they needed to renovate that last room and turn it into a separate unit. His grandchildren’s chatter was sweet — but in moderation, not when it was part of the routine tumult in the house. “Pitzy?” their grandfather asked, amused. “What is pitzy?” “You know, really tiny,” Shloimy said. “Our old kitchen was so tiny that it only had two hooks for the towels, and the towels were always falling down. Binyamin’s jacket also fell down, Yitzy, remember?” “So what?” Yitzy shrugged it off. “I picked it up right away and hung it back on the hook.” “When was that?” Something about this conversation was niggling in Elisheva’s mind. “When did Binyamin’s jacket fall onto the floor near the fridge?” “Before Purim, when Binyamin was sick for almost a week.” “Not next to the fridge,” Shloimy corrected his brother. “Half of it was stuck under the fridge.” “Not true!” His brother — older by a year and a half — was indignant now. “Yes, it is! I saw you cleaning the sleeve because it got really

dirty. You used a baby wipe, and then you hung the jacket up again so we could only see the other sleeve, the clean one!” Well, the question of how the silver yad had gotten under the fridge was now solved. Elisheva now knew exactly how it had happened. ***** They went down in the elevator to her father’s room. “A contractor is supposed to come by this evening,” Elisheva told him as the elevator doors slid open. “He’ll give us an estimate for the renovation. It shouldn’t be too much, but even so, the difference in price between different con-
“We’re making my father a separate unit, so he should be comfortable,” Elisheva explained. “The entrance will be from our house, but it will be equipped with everything he needs, and it will be separate and quiet…” “Oh, contractors. I know a few. Do you want some phone numbers?” Elisheva, who was confused enough by the information her friends from work had bombarded her with, and by all the recommendations that Eliyahu’s chavrusos had given him, preferred not to complicate things even more. “We have a few leads,” she said politely. “If we’ll need some more names, I’ll let you know. Thanks. Tzippy?! What are you doing here?”

He renovated Eliyahu’s chavrusa’s house, and they were very satisfied. There’s another contractor we heard about…” Ugh, those annoying barks. On the other hand, it was a good thing that Emmanuel’s dogs gave her warning about their presence. “Ah, Reb Yisroel!” the tall man exclaimed as he approached them. “Your grandchildren are so cute.” He smiled at the children, who gaped at the two little heads peeping from the man’s pocket. “Don’t try to pet them! They bite anyone whom they don’t know — and hard! So what do I hear, Reb Yisoel? Are you really moving?” Elisheva’s father nodded. “And why do you need a contractor?”
“We came to see Zeidy.” Tzippy’s smiling face emerged from her grandfather’s room, where she had been waiting for him. “I came with Miri.” “So nice to see you girls!” Elisheva said warmly. Now she felt that it was time for her to leave with the little ones. Besides the fact that they were tired, there were too many Potolsky faces in the hallway at the moment, and she didn’t like that. Neither did her father, she knew. He had always been afraid of ayin hara. “I popped in to visit Tzippy,” her older daughter explained. “And she lives so close to Zeidy that I felt it would be a shame to be in the area and not go and visit him.” “So we came together!” “And here is Shmuely!” The children darted into the room, cavorting around their nephew. Elisheva and her father remained behind, as she kept pace

with his slow steps. The sounds of laughter wafted out of the small room. Elisheva looked at her father, wanting to tell him not to worry; the noise would ease in a moment when she would be leaving with the boys. But he said something to her instead. Something surprising. “I hope that Miri will also get a big apartment.” He put his hand on the mezuzah. “You bought more raffle tickets, Tatty?” She chuckled. “No.” “So how are you hoping for this?” “It’s necessary to buy her one. So she shouldn’t be jealous.” Elisheva stopped. “I didn’t buy a big apartment for anyone, Tatty,” she said quietly, hoping that the cheerful chatter from inside the room would muffle her words. “Not for myself, and not for Tzippy. If I bought an apartment, then it was for Miri herself. True, hers is not large, and it’s not in Bnei Brak, but I’m giving her what I can afford.” He looked at her with his deep-set eyes, but she wasn’t finished. “Since they were born, I’ve been trying to instill in them — in all of my kids — that each one has what is coming to him or her, and that no one can take that away from them, and that they cannot take it away from anyone else.” She didn’t realize how much pain enveloped her words. “If Miri is envious of her sister, then maybe I’ve failed in her chinuch… But to pay a penalty equal to the cost of an apartment is something I cannot do…” “You didn’t fail,” her father said, his hand still on the mezuzah. “So what are you saying?” “Something very unusual happened here.” “What, with my apartment and Tzippy’s?” “Yes.” “It really is very strange. I’ve told you that myself before. But what am I supposed to do? Ask U’shemartem to give Miri a beautiful apartment as well? Or ask the millionaire to check if he perhaps has another couple in the family who needs to be commemorated, and whose names were Yaakov and Miriam?” “Don’t be angry,” her father said. “I’m not an—” But at that second, Elisheva was stunned by the intensity of the fury that bubbled up inside her. “Not at you, Tatty,” she hurried to say, though she could hardly get the sentence out. “At Miri. Maybe it’s not nice to be angry at her, because she really did fall between the cracks here, but—” The door was suddenly flung open. “Zeidy! Mommy! Why aren’t you coming? Shmuely is standing, Mommy! You have to see this! Miri said that he turned exactly ten months old yesterday!” Elisheva suddenly realized that her eyes were glistening. The timing was actually good, because Miri was sure that they were tears of emotion in her mother’s eyes, evoked at the sight of her first grandson learning to stand. Seeing little Shmuely standing on the floor in his socks, gripping the arm of the chair and sending happy
smiles in every direction, really was the sweetest sight. He reminded Elisheva so much of Miri at that moment, and Elisheva felt herself flashing back to her early days of motherhood. How much she had wanted to do for little Miri, to give her — and the ones who came after her — whatever possible… and how quickly she’d discovered how small, limited and painful her “whatever possible” really was. She would never be able to give her children everything. No. She wasn’t angry at her father, nor was she angry at Miri. It was an old frustration of hers. A frustration over what she lacked, and the things she could not give, and the fear that her children were growing up disadvantaged. The frustration that she never allowed herself to express, even to her own self. She’d always just bite her lips quietly, in the dark, and make sure that they were constantly turned up into a smile. It wasn’t that these smiles were totally false. She was happy. She also tried to raise her children in a happy atmosphere. But during the moments when she felt sad, confused and uncertain, even in front of the mirror, she would stifle that sadness and force herself to continue smiling. Why was it so hard for her to admit, even to herself, that she was finding things hard? ***** Elisheva walked through the empty house. The children were in school, and she wandered aimlessly from room to room, looking at the morning mess but not seeing it. Blumi had called, but Elisheva hadn’t even answered the phone. No, it hadn’t been bad all these years. Of course not. It had been a bit hard; that was true. It wasn’t easy to create something from nothing and to raise the children happily when every-

one else had so many things that they did not. But she had been strong, a little too strong. Maybe it was ingrained in her from an early age, the feeling of “We have to block it out.” It was because of this feeling that she’d never told her parents that her friend had insulted her, or that she had fallen, or that her teacher had scolded her. The coping method she had found was to persuade herself that there was nothing wrong. Her friend had insulted her, she had fallen, she had been scolded — so what? And even as she’d grown older, things had continued in this vein: She’d tell herself, We have no fridge for five days, until the next paycheck — nu, nu. Or, Despite my efforts, the
the refrigerator was adorned with a blue scribble, did it enter her mind that she could merely toss the poor scrap into the trash, because they had already made the payment to Bentzy’s preschool. And they did have the means to pay, baruch Hashem. Today, she could no longer say they were poor. And there was no way to figure out whom that was due to. That, perhaps, was an embarrassment. She shook her head and arranged the chairs around the small table. She had no energy to answer Blumi’s call and listen to what she had discovered or planned to discover. She preferred to stick to the thought that nothing was orchestrated, and nothing
The coping method she had found was to persuade herself that there was nothing wrong. Her friend had insulted her, she had fallen, she had been scolded — so what? mending on the kids’ clothes is evident — so what? Or, I bought clothes at a gemach, and a friend saw me coming out of there with bags — so what? Is it an embarrassment to be poor? No, it was not an embarrassment. But it was difficult, and there was no reason to suppress that. Elisheva stood in front of the fridge and found herself scratching a word onto a reminder notice on the fridge. Difficulty. Then she quickly scribbled it up. There were a few curious little ones who would, no doubt, try to figure out what the difficulty was, who it was relating to, and whose handwriting it was written in. Another scribble, and then another, but the letters from the word that she’d written seemed to jump out at her from between the blue lines, mocking her. She gripped the pen even more tightly, and only when the paper tore, and
had been given to them out of pity. Because she was embarrassed. At least today she could admit it. Elisheva looked around her, at the big house, through a new lens. Would her little ones grow up happier than her big ones, who had spent their childhood years in a tiny, simple-to-the-point-of-shabbiness apartment? She hoped they would grow up happy. And she also hoped that, when all was said and done, the older children had also been happy enough growing up, even though some of their mother’s smiles and remarks — as she knew today — were purely an act. She really tried to be strong. Perhaps even for herself a bit. But mostly for her family, for her children. And for that, she would surely not be judged negatively. To be continued...

Leading Networks Call Election for Joe Biden THE PULSE: Leading U.S. networks called the election for
Joe Biden. The race was called after Biden built an insurmountable lead in the battleground state of Pennsylvania, putting him beyond the threshold of 270 electoral votes required to win the electoral college. Biden also led by small margins in the traditionally Republican states of Arizona and Georgia. Biden powered himself to victory by rebuilding the so-called Democratic Blue Wall by winning the states of Wisconsin and Michigan, which were won by Trump in 2016. Biden also held a commanding lead in the nationwide popular vote total, where he led by close to five million votes. The race was closer than most pollsters predicted as many state-level polls were considerably off on their projec-

tions. President Trump outperformed the polls in states such as Florida and Ohio. He had an incredibly impressive showing in Miami Dade County, where he won significant support from the Latin American community. To the surprise of most political pundits, Trump made substantial inroads among minority communities throughout America. Trump exceeded his 2016 totals by close to eight million votes, but it was not enough to beat the Biden campaign due to increased voter turnout across the board. President Trump’s campaign has challenged some of the vote totals and is requesting a recount in Wisconsin. Trump, and his personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, allege that widespread fraud took place as well. However, it is highly unlikely that any irregularities that may have taken place would be enough to impact the election outcome. Furthermore, the campaign has not presented evidence of widespread fraud, and courts have rejected many of the campaign’s lawsuits.
Some observers believe that Trump’s case with the best chance of success is his lawsuit to invalidate votes cast before Election Day that arrived after Election Day in Pennsylvania. Trump’s legal team is arguing to overturn a State Supreme Court ruling that allowed counting such ballots. However, as vote totals now stand, winning that case will not be enough to turn the state red. Republican Senator Pat Toomey said, “There is simply no evidence that anybody has shown me or anyone else I’m aware of, of any kind of widespread corruption or fraud.” Many world leaders have congratulated Biden on his win, among them Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu. Agudas Yisrael of America also sent a congratulatory letter addressed to president-elect Joe Biden. THE IMPACT: Biden’s victory will usher in a seismic change
in Washington, D.C. Biden will seek to do away with the unilateralism of Trump’s America First Policies. He will endeavor to work together with U.S. allies on a variety of issues. Biden is committed to rejoining the Paris Climate Accord and reestablishing the DACA program for illegal immigrants who arrived in the United States as children. Biden has committed to a robust science-based federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden has pledged to keep the U.S. embassy in Jerusalem and praised the Abraham Accords. However, he is also committed to engaging with the Palestinian leadership to foster a two-state solution. He will resume funding to the Palestinian authority provided that the funds are not used in violation of the Taylor Force Act, which prohibits American funds from being given to families of terrorists. He will also allow the Palestinian Authority to reopen its Washington office and likely reopen the U.S. consulate in East Jerusalem to service the Palestinians’ consular needs. Biden has also expressed his intent to rejoin the Iran Nuclear Deal, although he has expressed the need for improvements to the deal before finalizing reentry into the agreement. Biden sees the agreement as the best way to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions, especially now that Iran has significantly cut its nuclear breakout time over the past few months. Biden has also pledged to change the hyperpartisan tone that currently permeates the American political discourse. In his victory speech on Sunday night, Biden stated emphatically, “Let this grim era of demonization in America begin to end — here and now.”
Republicans Make Gains in the House of Representatives THE PULSE: Republicans unexpectedly made gains in the
U.S. House of Representatives. As of the time of writing, Republicans have flipped eight seats held by Democrats, and many races have yet to be called. Democrats are projected to retain control of the House, but with much slimmer margins than expected. Republicans also performed better than expected in many Senate races. Democrats managed to pick up seats in Arizona and Colorado, but Republicans picked up one in Alabama and held seats in South Carolina, Iowa and Montana. It also appears that Republicans have kept their Senate seat in North Carolina though it has not formally been called yet. Control of the Senate will hinge upon who wins Geor-
gia’s two Senate seats, which look to be heading to a January runoff. Georgia law requires a runoff election if no candidate earns 50% of the vote. Republicans lead in both races, but it appears that they will fall short of the 50% threshold, thereby setting up a major political showdown in Georgia over the next few months. THE IMPACT: Many mainstream Democrats cast blame on
the more progressive elements of the party for the dismal performance of congressional Democrats. House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-VA) said that if “we are going to run on Medicare-for-all, defund the police, socialized medicine, we’re not going to win.” Representative Abigail Spanberger (D-SC) said, “We need to not ever use the word ‘socialist’ or ‘socialism’ ever again. We lost good members because of that.” Henry Cuellar (D-TX) told Fox News that every Democratic district is different and that it is essential for his constituents to know that while he believes in climate change, he is not in favor of shutting down fossil fuels. According to multiple media reports, centrist Democrats are contemplating a challenge to Nancy Pelosi’s reelection as Speaker of the House. Many would prefer to see James Clyburn elected in her stead.
The Road Forward ANALYSIS: Biden framed himself as a candidate who could
heal America and as the one who could bridge the partisan divide. He sought to highlight Republican support of his candidacy and sidelined his party’s more extreme elements at the Democratic National Convention. Biden is a proud Democrat, and as such, many of his policies are left of center. Many fear that the progressive and liberal elements of the Democratic party will pull Biden to the extreme left. However, an analysis of the election results provides a basis for optimism that this will not be the case. Biden is most probably a one-term president, and he knows that his legacy is dependent on these four years. Should Republicans retain control of the Senate, Biden will need to compromise with them to pass legislation. Should Democrats win control of the Senate, their Senate majority will be razor-thin. In the House, Republican gains have diminished the size of the Democratic majority. The diversity of the Democratic caucus will make it virtually impossible to pass big-ticket progressive items. Biden will have to govern from the center and appeal to the broadest possible coalition to be effective. The alternative is to be left bickering and fighting for at least the first two years of his presidency. Another reason to be hopeful is that Biden spent many years in the Senate, where he collaborated with his Republican counterparts. Biden has an established and proven successful track record of working together with Mitch McConnell. Biden’s personal style is more subdued and not particularly brash, and this may also be conducive to bipartisanship. There are some areas where a president can choose to act unilaterally, primarily in areas of foreign policy and in issuing or overturning executive orders. Biden will also undoubtedly need to assuage his party’s progressive elements and, in all likelihood, appoint progressives to cabinet positions. However, there is strong reason to be optimistic that he will lead from the center and stick with his commitment to bring the country together.

CUTLETS IN YOUR K ITCHEN A comprehensive cutlet guide — from freezer to table THE BORO PARK VIEW / 71
“STEAK IS THE UNDISPUTED KING OF THE MEAT FAMILY.”
My apologies to the many people who believe this myth; I’ll be debunking it right here, right now, and finally set the record straight. The poultry that reigns as king is none other than — drumroll, please! — the cutlet! You might be wondering why I’m so invested in the powers of this cut of poultry. You see, my husband is an avid cutlet fan, and I don’t go for the taste of chicken bottoms, so in my home, dinners are all about cutlets. And since my dinners usually (always!) consist
of chicken cutlets, my friends and family are constantly asking me to share some new cutlet recipes and ideas. “Do you have any cutlet recipes to share?” they ask. “I feel like I’ve tried everything already!” Well, surprise, surprise! I’m
sure they haven’t, because like I said, cutlets are king. The endless array of options are just, well, endless! You can slice ‘em, shred ‘em, cube ‘em, roll ‘em... And then you can marinate ‘em, baste ‘em, coat ‘em... And then grill ‘em, sear ‘em, fry ‘em, bake ‘em... And then they can be tucked into a sandwich, or a pita, or a taco — or tossed over a pizza dough… And on and on the list goes! One of the main reasons I adore cutlets is the minimal supper prep they require. It is ten times, if not twenty times, easier and faster to prepare than any other meat or poultry. However, in order for you to come around to my way of thinking, I need to bring some hard facts and evidence to the table, right? Well, I’ve got it all down pat for you: Useful tips and tricks, easy dinners, elegant recipes, and much more — all made with the humble cutlet. Try them! And before long you will agree that cutlets reign supreme.
THAWING CHICKEN CUTLETS Despite all of those amazing chicken cutlet recipes you have bookmarked, it’s inevitable that you’ll someday find yourself with the cutlets still in the freezer come dinnertime. Say it’s almost supper time and the menu card is still blank. You feel yourself spiraling into the “I give up zone” when you remember that you’ve got some chicken cutlets! But guess what? They’re HOT POPPERS

There’s a certain thrill to having a full supper prepped in less than 30 minutes — a supper that satisfies everyone’s palates, adults and kids alike. in the freezer. Don’t give up just yet because chicken cutlets can be defrosted in literally no time so supper can happen. Like I said, chicken cutlets are the undisputed king. There are several different ways to safely thaw your frozen chicken just in time for a delicious, no-fuss meal. One thing to be careful, though, is to never thaw chicken by leaving it out on the counter, as this allows bacteria to multiply rapidly. Here I’ve outlined three safe methods for defrosting chicken.
THE REFRIGERATOR METHOD This method takes the most amount of planning, as it takes at least a full day for chicken cutlets to thaw, but it’s easy: Simply place frozen cutlets in the refrigerator. Once thawed, cutlets can remain in the fridge for an additional day or two before cooking. They can also be refrozen without cooking, but there may be some loss of quality.
THE COLD WATER METHOD Before we get to the actual technique, here are a couple of things to keep in mind. Start with relatively thin chicken cutlets. For quick thawing, you don’t want to work with anything too thick. Before you start, seal chicken cutlets in a Ziploc bag (no waterlogged chicken allowed!). Okay, we’re ready. Let’s thaw! • Run cold tap water into a bowl. • Submerge the frozen chicken
74 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
cutlets. • Stir the water every once in a while (this keeps pockets of cold water from forming). • Cutlets should be thawed in about 30 minutes or less.
THE MICROWAVE METHOD If you’re short on time, using a microwave is the fastest method to defrost chicken cutlets. To safely thaw cutlets in the microwave, remove any packaging before placing it in a microwave-safe dish or container, and cover the dish loosely. Use the defrost setting on your microwave to defrost for two minutes at a time, checking the chicken and turning or flipping it periodically to ensure even thawing. (If you don’t have a defrost setting, set your microwave to cook at 20% to 30% of its full power.) (Chicken that’s been thawed
in a microwave should always be cooked immediately after defrosting, since microwaves may heat the chicken to temperatures in which bacteria thrive. Promptly cooking the chicken is the only way to ensure that the bacteria are destroyed. Only once the chicken has been cooked is it safe to refreeze.)
PREPARING BREADED CUTLETS The standard breading technique includes three steps: dredging in flour, moistening in egg wash, and coating. Because this is a three-step process, setting out the ingredients in an organized way will simplify preparation and create less mess. Fill three bowls — flour in the first, the egg wash in the second, and the crumbs in the third — and arrange them in order.

Place them very close together to limit the mess. You will also want a place to put the coated cutlets once you’ve breaded them. A lined baking sheet always works, or a simple cutting board will do. To begin, make sure the cutlet is dry so no extra moisture remains trapped under the coating, which causes it to become soggy and not cook properly. Then season the flour and eggs with some salt and pepper for optimal flavor. Dredge each cutlet in flour and shake off any excess. You want to be sure the cutlet is coated evenly and that there aren’t any bare spots or areas where the layer of flour is too thick. Use your left hand to dip each cutlet in the flour, and then switch to your right hand for dipping in the egg wash and bread crumbs so the bowl of flour remains dry. When you take the cutlet out of the egg wash, let excess liquid drip off, and then transfer it to the dish with the crumbs. Toss the cutlet in the crumbs until it is thoroughly coated. You may need to press the crumbs onto the cutlet for even coating. Repeat steps for the remaining cutlets. After the cutlets are breaded, you are ready to fry (or bake) them. If frying, fill a heavy-bottomed pan with enough oil for the cutlets to be half covered. Heat the oil until a few breadcrumbs sizzle when tossed in. Fry each cutlet for a minute or two, until the bottom is golden-brown, and then flip. (If your pan is small, fry in batches rather than overcrowding the pan.) Remove cutlets from pan, and drain the excess oil using paper towels or place on a cooling rack over a baking sheet. Keep your cutlets warm until ready to serve. If baking, place on a lined baking sheet, leaving a space between each cutlet, and pop the baking sheet into a preheated oven. I usually bake chicken cutlets at 400 degrees for about 20 minutes. (The timing and temperature may vary for certain recipes.)

“We were the recipe messengers,” Mrs. Zissy Mayer shares, reminiscing about the part the young girls in Nitra played in the ladies’ auxiliary project. “We’d cut through the woods of our little village in Mount Kisco, traipsing from house to house to collect assorted pieces of paper.” And from these handwritten scraps evolved a priceless kitchen essential for balabustas everywhere. “The finished product belied the fact that the book hadn’t been produced in the publishing

houses of Manhattan, but in a handful of dining rooms and kitchens in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn by a volunteer team of fourteen women,” writes Dovid Margolin on chabad.org about the beginnings of the famous “purple cookbook.” “We met again and again and again, usually in Braun’s dining room,” shares Mrs. Suri Spitzer, a dedicated member of the Pupa Ladies’ Auxiliary. “But even before those hours spent on the recipes, the collecting alone took several years.” Indeed, as we catch up with the initiators of the Yiddish world’s cookbook classics — The Heimishe Kitchen, Spice and Spirit, The Balabuste’s Choice — we hear not of entrepreneurs masterminding lucrative business opportunities, but of groups of dedicated volunteers sitting around tables in their homes, planning, revising, selecting and editing, driven by a desire to make a difference. And while each of them had a lofty purpose in mind — some to raise funds for tzedakah, others to teach the world about kashrus — their practical influence, too, is still felt in kitchens all over the world.

“The Nitra Cookbook” DEBUTED IN 1977 THE COOKBOOK WAS THE BRAINCHILD OF Mrs. Leah Lefkowitz, a”h, who was always seeking ways to help raise funds for the Nitra Talmud Torah to which she was so devoted. Secluded as the Nitra community was, a fundraising endeavor would have to somehow channel funds from the greater community to their little enclave. When the brainstorm came to her — to compile a cookbook as a guide for newlyweds and just about anyone who spends time in the kitchen — she lost no time in bringing it to fruition. The first step was amassing a collection of recipes. Taking to the phone, Mrs. Lefkowitz contacted friends, neighbors, relatives, acquaintances, and “just about everyone,” asking homemakers to share their best recipes for the dream she was determined to make a reality. (And at that time, phone calls were paid for per call, even locally!) As each handwritten paper came her way, she’d record the recipe in her notebook, the famous spiral that would evolve into “The Nitra Cookbook.” THE PROJECT GOT OFF THE GROUND through the efforts of Mrs. Zissy Appel and Mrs. Lana Kohn, who were presented with Mrs. Lefkowitz’s spiral. Twice a week, after they’d tuck their kinderlach in for the night, they’d meet in the Kohns’ dining room to structure what would become a revolution in heimish cooking. Until the wee hours of night, they sorted, categorized, selected, clarified, tweaked and edited, until they had a selection of the best of the best. THE HEADQUARTERS: Mount Kisco, New York.
As the project solidified, informal business meetings were held in various homes on an almost nightly basis, and the kitchens across the shtetl served as recipe labs, where the recipes were tested and finetuned. In these kitchens “a pinch of salt” was replaced with an exact measurement. “You’ll see how much water it absorbs and adjust accordingly” was changed to precise amounts. Pan sizes were tried and determined and carefully marked down (to avoid overflowing cake batters wreaking havoc in balabustas’ ovens). And “bake until ready” was modified with a temperature and cooking time.
THE SERIES:
COMPLICATIONS, COMPLICATIONS…
The vague directions typical of seasoned cooks with a natural knack for spicing and “sensing” amounts and states of readiness was a huge hurdle that involved hours of testing and fine-tuning for clarity. But even more challenging was clarifying information that was mistakenly omitted from recipes or left to the cook’s imagination, and then tracking down the contributors. It took a great deal of networking until they reached the correct party and clarified the recipe, and some recipes couldn’t be used because they didn’t have whom to consult. FIT FOR PRINT? The recipes were tried out and tweaked as many times as it took to obtain flawless results. Mrs. Mayer shares how the samples were then delivered to the mevinim all across the neighborhood so their approval could be obtained. Excitement rippled through the community as the project took shape...

About 30 years ago, when young housewives who moved to Eretz Yisroel did not have access to the kind of communication options there are today — no phone calls to Mommy more than once a week — one woman told Mrs. Appel, “The Nitra Cookbook was my guidebook.” With her mother so far away and her wisdom inaccessible, the young woman consulted the cookbook as she learned her way around in the kitchen. The message the organizers heard all the time, from young housewives from all over, was what a difference this cookbook made in their marriages. “Liba geit durech de magen,” after all, and The Heimishe Kitchen enabled them to feed their families in style.
Then came the second volume, the “green book,” organized by Mrs. Beck.
1992
2002: The “yellow book,” which features the best of volumes 1 and 2 (the original red and green books), was compiled by Mrs. Zissy Mayer, daughter of Mrs. Leah Lefkowitz, a”h. 2020: As health awareness increased, and many expressed interest in improving their cooking habits, Mrs. Perlmutter upgraded their first health food cookbook to Healthy Ever After, a contemporary edition with photos and recipes that reflect the latest information and health trends.

brilliant curation of hand-picked recipes, but also as a resource for baalei teshuvah, with practical information about Shabbos, yom tov and life cycle events, as well as a section on the laws of kashrus that was overseen by Rabbi Yehuda Kalman Marlow. The book was named for the two elements it presents, as explained in the preface in the 1990 edition: “We present the ‘spice’ — a treasure house of kosher dishes, against the backdrop of the ‘spirit’ — the rich tapestry of Jewish life. These two elements are inseparably intertwined.” NOT JUST ANY PRINT WOULD DO. After reviewing the manuscript, the Rebbe insisted that the cookbook team “make it beautiful” so that it would stand out from among the non-Jewish cookbooks and be noticed by individuals whom the book might draw closer to Yiddishkeit and kashrus. The text underwent revisions and enhancements, and a professional artist was commissioned for illustrations, along with a typesetter. The women went from publisher to publisher and soon learned that there was nothing on the market of the caliber they sought. So they selected a printer, bookbinder and other vendors needed for the process, who each gave the project their all and worked together to produce the masterpiece the book became. “The Pupa Cookbook” DEBUTED IN NOVEMBER 1999
THE COOKBOOK WAS THE BRAINCHILD OF
Mrs. Bruchy Singer, who decided to launch the project in order to obtain funding for a crucial project for the Pupa mosdos. THE PROJECT GOT OFF THE GROUND
through the efforts of Mrs. Suri Spitzer, who, while spending the summer at Pupa camp, was
summoned to the public phone. The caller was Mrs. Singer, and she had a request. She was working on a cookbook to benefit the mosdos and needed help with the project. She’d learned about Mrs. Spitzer’s involvement in the parties organized by the kollel’s N’shei, and she was hoping that she’d be willing to take the cookbook under her wing. Having much interest in the success of the mosdos and the kollel, Mrs. Spitzer agreed to get involved after ascertaining that the kollel would also benefit from the project. And once she was in, there was no going back… TO LAUNCH THE COLLECTION,
Mrs. Spitzer and Mrs. Singer made a visit to Pupa high school in Williamsburg with a stack of colorful index cards. They went from classroom to classroom and urged the high schoolers to bring in their best family recipes for a chance to win a valuable prize. Looking through the hundreds of submissions, they were dismayed to discover that they mostly had an oversized collection of brownie cakes and marble cakes! After that, they started to collect the recipes by phone. THE HEADQUARTERS:

Most of the food testing and photography took place in the kitchen of Mrs. Chany Rubinstein, and they were a far cry from the food photography of today. “They were quite amateur, compared to what we see today,” Mrs. Spitzer admits with a laugh. “We plated them on our own, in our kitchens.” Still, this innovation was an eye-appealing enhancement at the time. NU, WHAT’S COOKING?
THE MOST UNEXPECTED PLACE The Balabuste’s Choice was sighted: In a Chabad house in Greece. A nephew of Mrs. Spitzer was visiting the shul during a stopover in the country and called her up to share the regards. FOOD FEEDBACK:
From the start, the feedback kept coming. How many young housewives reported learning to braid challos with the guide included in the book. How many cooks kept going back to their favorites, time and again. Recently, a recipe circulated in the neighborhood where one of Mrs. Spitzer’s daughters lives. Everyone was trying it and recommending it to others. Then, after a few days, they realized that it’s actually a recipe from The Balabuste’s Choice!
SOME THINGS CHANGE, like the demand for more photos as well as upgraded recipes that incorporate new ingredients now available on the kosher food market. SOME THINGS STAY THE SAME. Collecting the heimish recipes they pride themselves with is still a great undertaking. Equally daunting is that the book gets edited and proofread again and again, to make sure the recipes are clear, easy-to-follow, and as perfect as humanly possible. The book organizers know that people will be trusting them blindly, and they don’t take the responsibility lightly. WHAT MAKES IT ALL WORTH IT, is the siyata d’Shmaya they constantly experience, the sure signs that Hashem is prodding them, “Go, go, go!” “I can write an entire book detailing the hashgacha evident in the creation of our new cookbook alone,” Mrs. Spitzer says.

Things were already cooking already back in the ’60s, even before the above historical contributions made their mark on the Jewish culinary scene. The Yeshiva of Spring Valley Women’s League put together the Nu, What’s Cooking? cookbook, but since it was published so many years ago, we could not get hold of anyone with concrete information on when and where this cookbook was born. Nevertheless, we can be pretty sure that the idea was conceived and the collection carefully put together around a dining room table somewhere in Monsey. Some Monsey homes are still proud to own a copy of this historical cookbook. It had an adorable handdrawn cover, and recipes are still being used by many. And if you want to get your own... Abe’s Books has one used copy for sale, priced at a whopping $148!

This Week:
Alexander Rappaport Director, Masbia
In the prewar era, Yiddish communities in Eastern Europe operated a charitable account called Hekdesh, whose funds, among other things, were used to feed the local poor. Until 2005, Boro Park did not have a centralized tzedakah group dedicated to feeding the hungry throughout the year with no questions asked. Masbia was founded to fill this glaring void, and in the years since its establishment has expanded its list of services to meet the demands of those struggling to feed themselves and their families. Alexander Rappaport, a proud Kosover chassid, has been leading the organization through its growing phases, and his face has become synonymous with the local chesed scene in the eyes of the community, philanthropists and government officials alike. Can you take us back to Masbia’s founding and share how the organization came into being?
In the mid-2000s, I learned with Mordechai Mandelbaum, a caring baal chesed well known in Boro Park, and we discussed that it would be wonderful if someone would provide such a service. Mordechai’s father had passed away a short while before our conversation, and he decided to jump in and found Masbia with seed money he had saved up. He named it Lev Leibeleh, after his endearing late father.

At first, we served dinner every evening in that restaurant-like setting, but as the community’s needs grew, we added a number of food-based services and opened two additional locations, one in Flatbush and the other in Forest Hill, Queens.
married off a child, and she called me one day on my cell phone, pleading, “Sender, we’re in a really difficult spot right now, and I can’t bring myself to stand in line for food. Can you please help me arrange pickup?” Sadly, this is much more prevalent than people realize.
Were you involved in askanus before your Masbia days?
Speaking of COVID-19, were you able to serve meals when the city was on lockdown?
I was always a doer. As a bachur in yeshivah in Eretz Yisroel, I was charged with memorizing and writing the previous Viznitz Rebbe’s Shabbos talks. Later on I would often get involved in drafting and gathering signatures for rabbinic kol korehs (proclamations) and tried to make myself useful whenever I could. But I never envisioned this as my life’s mission to such an extent.
It was a very difficult period at first. Not only weren’t we able to stay open normally, but many people who relied on regular meals elsewhere found themselves starving and stuck at home. We contracted with companies who provide food for airlines to give us ready packages, and we offered coupons for people to go order takeout at neighboring stores. On some nights, a couple thousand Boro Park residents ate dinner utilizing these coupons! Another initiative we undertook during this difficult time was committing to covering the grocery bills of widows who lost their husband to the virus. My friend Mordy Getz from Eichler’s joined with a group of donors to fund this project, and we’ve received incredibly moving feedback from those who’ve benefited from it.
How is Masbia different from other chesed organizations that assist the poor?
I would say that the biggest difference is that we don’t have an intake process and nobody needs to apply for services. Our door is open to everyone, and nobody looks or asks questions; if you’re hungry, come on in. If you’ve noticed, our logo has an illustration of Avraham Avinu’s tent that our children just learned about. It’s literally an open-door policy. I assume this includes people from outside the community?
What is Masbia’s annual budget?
It was around $5 million before COVID-19 hit. How do you cover such a large sum?
People sometimes ask me about this, and I tell them, “Would you be willing to risk that a Yid who might not be so heimish should go hungry because he’s not sure he’s invited? Chas v’shalom.” I know others will sometimes put up a Shabbos lock with a cryptic passcode, but there’s no doubt that this turns away some people from the lower rungs of society since they don’t know how to decipher the information.
Some people are under the misconception that the government throws obscene sums of money our way, but this isn’t the case. Most soup kitchens in New York are located in religious or community centers, so the government provides a little food aid that goes a long way. With our overhead, I’d approximate that maybe 10% of our expenses are covered by government funding. The rest is raised through grassroots fundraising. It’s a community effort for a community cause.
Masbia is best known as a soup kitchen, but the food distributions seemed to have become really popular. Why did you launch this initiative?
You mentioned earlier that Masbia serves visitors in a restaurant-like setting. What do you mean by that, and why is it necessary?
The food we distribute is a natural progression from our original mission. There are many struggling large families who cannot just show up every evening to eat dinner at our place. Therfore, there have different packages we offer that provide enough food to last a couple of days. We used to distribute about two to three truckloads of food every week, but the COVID-19 crisis has seen our efforts increase fivefold! There are many families who have suddenly found themselves without any source of income, and this assistance is a lifesaver in their most desperate times. There was a woman whose wealthy husband used to donate a night at Masbia every time he
Everyone who comes in is seated in our upscale dining room and served a full, hearty meal by a waiter. Our food is made fresh in our commercial kitchen, and we don’t serve leftovers. The reason we do this is so that people should feel dignified and want to return again. Other than not paying on the way out, we want visitors to feel like they’re no different from regular people eating out. What do you offer on Shabbos and yom tov?
We’ve been hosting meals for many years, and they’ve taken on a life of their own. Many participants have become like family and often stick around long after the meal is over. There was a woman who could barely walk

but dragged herself a full mile to join our Pesach Seder, since she lived all alone. For two years, my family ate on premises on a weekly basis until things were running smoothly. My children will forever cherish the people they met, the stories they heard, and the lessons they learned over this period of time. I want to add that Shabbos and yom tov are actually not as big of a problem for many people as those quiet nights like chol hamoed when nobody invites them for a meal or remembers they exist. We try to fill this gap by preparing a program, in addition to the food, for these nights. Your name often comes up in the media as a community representative. How did that come about?
Can you imagine a world that is vibrant, beautiful, and perfect? Dew Drops is a teleconference program, where you will learn to access the amazing gift Hashem gave you, a healthy body. Watch it respond in kind, while the pain melts away.

You might find this answer surprising, but I’m actually pretty shy and never enjoyed the publicity. However, Masbia is a fascinating phenomenon, and a number of secular media outlets have chosen to feature us. Similarly, many political figures want to be associated with our noble work, and we often need their help in our efforts to feed the poor. I was once invited to an event where the governor was to be present, and I had mentioned to someone that I want to thank the governor for his part in expanding some program. They seated me at the head of the table and basically made me give an impromptu speech. The pictures that were shared far and wide, leading people to assume that I was one of the movers and shakers at that event, when the truth was actually far less exciting... How does your work and public personality impact your personal life?
I try to stay grounded and make sure to never act like a k’nacker. My children are part of my mission and admire what their father does. Because I’m often so busy, I make sure to spend quality time with them where we research stuff, work on projects, send letters to rabbanim, and other tasks that create real, lasting memories. I hope that when they grow up, they will appreciate how I was there for people in need — and there for them at the same time.

FROM REVOLTING TO REVOLUTION In the days before newspapers, people had little information about things happening outside of their fields and town — but sometimes they were just as oblivious to what was going on inside their food. At the turn of the century, the print revolution enabled publications to increase their subscriptions dramatically, thereby stimulating public opinion. Collectively called muckrakers, a group of avowed socialists dedicated their pen to exposing capitalism’s hidden evils by reporting injustices so grave that it made the blood of its readers run cold. One muckraker, Upton Sinclair, released a bone-chilling account titled The Jungle, where he vividly detailed the unsanitary conditions in the Chicago Meatpacking Factory, which he’d named “The Meatpacking Jungle.” Among many revolting incidents, it described packers working alongside field mice while packaging the meat. Annoyed, the workers would put out poisoned bread for them; they would die, and then rats, bread and meat would go into the hoppers together, before promptly being sent off to the grocers. Despite Sinclair’s intention to reveal the plight of the hapless workers, the public outcry was in response to the revolting meat being sold. Sinclair said that he aimed for America’s heart and instead hit it in the stomach. After sending undercover agents to Chicago to ascertain the veracity of the report, President Theodore Roosevelt was propelled to act. Within months, Congress passed the Meat Inspection Act, as well as the Pure Food and Drug Act (FDA) to curb these sickening abuses. A candy maker who used shredded bone in his coconut bars told the government investigators that he wasn’t hurting the kids; “They like it.”

FDA NUMBERS TODAY Nowadays, it can take anywhere between one week and several years for a drug to be FDA-approved. Between lab tests and studies on animal and human subjects, it can cost over a million bucks to bring one product to the market. And after all that, only 7% of the drugs submitted for approval are actually released.
OUT OF EVERY DOLLAR AN AMERICAN SPENDS, ABOUT 20 CENTS GOES TO FDAREGULATED PRODUCTS. With a budget of $9.63 per American per year, the FDA is tasked with protecting the public from dangerous medications and ensuring the safety and purity of food, cosmetics and medical devices. This comes to a total of $2.6 trillion spent on products per year! The agency also plays an important role in establishing standards for labeling. Today, about 75% of the food we eat is regulated by the FDA.
By: Esti Greenfeld
A significant amount of food and medical products used daily by Americans are brought in from abroad. In the year ‘08, the FDA turned into a global operation when they started posting employees internationally in each location from where the U.S. imports products.
TODAY, 136,400 FOREIGN FACILITIES DISTRIBUTED BETWEEN 150 COUNTRIES EXPORT FDA-REGULATED PRODUCTS TO THE U.S.
READING THE REGULATIONS “Transfat-free” can be listed on any product that has less than 0.5 grams of transfat per serving; it does not mean that the food is completely free of transfat. For a food to be considered “light,” it has to have one-third fewer calories, fat or sodium than the regular version of that same product. When the label states the food is reduced in fat, sugar or sodium, it means the product has at least 25% less of the component than the regular version of the company’s same product. The claim “organic” can be used quite loosely and makes a product appear as though it has more of the specific organic ingredient than it actually does.
The FDA is not to be confused with the USDA — the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which regulates meat, poultry and egg products. It does get confusing, however, when we talk about meat sandwiches. Believe it or not, under which agency it falls depends on whether a sandwich is open-faced or not. (If it’s open-faced, is it even a sandwich?) Either way, sandwiches that have two slices of bread have a lower ratio of meat to other ingredients, which makes them fall under the directive of the FDA.

פרשת חיי שרה
I’ve decided to travel to the capital and try my luck there.
Who is the owner of all these carriages? Let me go speak with him!
I need a comfortable carriage and a skilled coachman. I have to get to the capital fast!
This is my top wagon driver. Have a good trip!
114 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
Sure, I’ll get you a coachman. Oh, what a coachman!
And a carriage — the best of the best!
You’ll take me to the capital, yes? Do you know how to get there?
And the youngest and strongest horse I’ve got!
I didn’t hear, what did you say? Do you know how to get there?
He doesn’t understand me. He doesn’t understand!
What’s going on? Is he not talking? Or can’t he speak?
What did you bring me, a coachman who can’t speak? How will I make such a long journey with him?
And what’s the problem? I don’t understand the language of the cities we will pass. How will I know if I got to the right place?
Oh, he’s mute! Oy, what did that wagon master do to me?!
Is it not enough for you to speak to him?
No, not at all!
Oh, that’s no problem.
Whom will I ask? Who will understand me and answer me?
It’s simple — the coachman won’t stop on the way, and when he’ll stop, you’ll know you’ve arrived!
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US? “He said, ‘Blessed is the G-d of my master Avraham, Who did not forsake His kindness… I am one the way on which Hashem has led me’” (19:17). Eliezer went to seek a wife for Yitzchok in a place he’d never been before. If he’d have traveled the usual way, he wouldn’t have known if the city he’d arrived in is the place where he’d find the kallah. But since he had kefitzas haderech — he didn’t pass any cities but arrived straight to Charan — Eliezer realized that this was where he’d find what he was looking for: a kallah for Yitzchak! A minhag with a mesorah ...
THE NUMBER ONE STEP FOR A STRESS -FREE SIMCHAH Making a wedding is always an exciting and emotional time. The whole family, mechutanim, grandparents, children and not to mention the chassan and kallah, get pulled into the excitement as they count down to that special day, when they’ll finally be led under the chuppah. The to-do list is long and detailed. You need to clothe the entire family. Furnish the apartment. Buy the shtafir, plan the logistics of the chasunah, organize the sheva berachas and... the list never really finishes. You try to think of every detail. You take note of every advice shared by your family and friends. You daven and hope that everything goes well and your simchah will be a ‘simchah with simchah’. You flip through every sefer for segulos that ‘guarantee’ you more Siyata dishmaya. Is there something more you can do, you wonder?
The answer is yes. And fortunately, it takes only one phone call!
to do to make sure you can celebrate your simchah with peace of mind. So yes, just one phone call to Einey Yeshuah and, like the hundreds of mechutanim before you, the real stress and worry is over. One short phone call and you’re registered in the ‘’Sefer Hasimchah’’. That’s all it takes to ensure that Einey Yeshuos has you and your family in mind with the special segulos and practices, all based on solid tradition.
And, as you move forward, from the first exhilarating moments of anticipation as you bring in Shabbos Aufruf, until that satisfied sigh of nachas and sheer gratitude at the last sheva berachos, you’ll have the calmness and serenity of knowing that you’ve done your part in bringing this extra protection and siyata dishmaya to your special occasion
Already as far back as in the times of the Tashba’’tz (around 600 years ago) we find a minhag for mechutanim to practice certain segulos to ward off the Eyin Harah (Tashbatz, Katan, Ch 464). Still later, the Shevet Mussar cautions about protecting against Eyin Harah especially families of Chasan and Kallah! In fact, that’s one of the reasons why we break a glass under the chuppah - to protect against any Eyin Harah that may be present (Ohr Hachamah). We see that based on our mesorah, protecting against Eyin Harah is the correct and necessary hishtadlus for you
