(Re: Excursions Without Allergies, Issue 206) Thank you so much for such a wonderful, family-friendly and entertaining weekly publication! I find that The Boro Park View caters to all demographics and has something for all ages to enjoy. The magazine is just amazing! I’d like to add a destination that wasn’t mentioned in your feature about Arizona. We visited Arizona this past summer. Our goal was to see the Grand Canyon, but we flew into Phoenix because tickets were cheaper that way. The next day we took a shuttle to Flagstaff, which is a drive of about two hours. The shuttle drive was very scenic and enjoyable. There are tour companies there that take you directly from some hotels to the Grand Canyon. It’s a beautiful place with a gorgeous Chabad house and easy access to the Grand Canyon, which we made sure to visit! If anyone is interested in more information regarding where to stay and what to do there, you can contact me through The Boro Park View. A Reader

(Re: Allergic Reaction, Issue 206) I just want to let all mothers of children with allergies know that almost all children eventually outgrow their allergies. My son, who is now 24, had terrible eczema as a baby and toddler. He outgrew most of his food allergies by the time he went to cheder (he was in a peanut-free school, baruch Hashem). As an adult, he does have seasonal allergies, but food allergies are almost a non-issue. Hatzlacha to all! A Caring Friend

CLOSER TO HOME

(Re: Home Base, Issue 207) I used to love The Boro Park View, but lately, I’m uncomfortable with the standards portrayed in your magazine. In the recipe section, one of the Meat Your Supper ideas was pulled brisket. Yom Tov is over, and Chanukah is in a while. Is this what people are serving for supper in Boro Park? I don’t think so — firstly due to the expense, and also, if we serve that for supper, what would we serve for Shabbos and Yom Tov? I have the same issue with the Home Base column; I don’t feel like it portrays a typical lifestyle. Can you please feature a regular family in Boro Park? Newlyweds here are taking one-bedroom apartments that have small kitchens and not enough closets. Growing families are typically living with four kids in two bedrooms. It would be nice to read about things your readership can relate to. An Unhappy Reader

YOUR SAY WALK IN MY SHOES

As the wife of a man with chronic disease, I am deeply troubled by the attitude that people have toward handicapped-reserved parking spaces. We live in a condo with several handicapped parking spots. Almost always, the handicapped spaces are used by able-bodied men who have no handicapped parking permits. When I spoke to the manager about this, his response was, “You don’t need to abuse the system. I saw your husband walking. He can walk faster than I can.” I guess people are clueless about what it’s like to live with chronic illness. Being in pain 24 hours a day takes a toll on your body. Sometimes when my husband gets back from another hospital visit and can hardly move, let alone walk, the handicapped-reserved spots are occupied by young healthy people simply because it’s more convenient for them than parking in their designated spot. Be aware that every time you park in a spot reserved for handicapped people, you are causing additional, unnecessary pain to a human being who is sick. I beg of you to please bring awareness to others when you see them use handicapped parking without a permit. May you know of no pain, and may all cholei Yisroel have a refuah Sheleimah. PARSHAS TOLDOS All’s Well That Ends Well

Yitzchak settled in Gerar and searched for water. Like his father Avraham, Yitzchak dug a well, but local shepherds demanded rights to the water supply. Yitzchak dug a second well, but the same thing happened. On the third try, no quarrels broke out, and the well remained in Yitzchak’s possession. Why does the Torah go into such detail, describing the wells and the quarrels? What can we learn from this? THE MITZVAH OF PIDYON SHEVUYIM was very dear to Reb Moshe Leib of Sassov, zy”a. Whenever he heard of a Yid in prison, he would do all he could to facilitate his release. Once, Reb Moshe Leib learned of a Jew in a faraway village who was thrown into prison along with his entire family when he failed to come up with money to pay his rent. Reb Moshe Leib was distraught to hear the details and immediately began to work on the case. He began collecting funds so he could pay the Yid’s debt and secure his release from prison. To the tzaddik’s dismay, his efforts were not met with success. It was an especially harsh and stubborn winter, and most of humanity huddled inside their homes for warmth and comfort. Most businesses had come to a halt, hibernating until the world would thaw somewhat. It was in these freezing temperatures that Reb Moshe Leib trekked from door to door. But since business was on hold, even the wealthier Yidden he visited could hardly help out. Days turned into weeks, and the tzaddik did not manage to raise even one-third of the necessary amount. Still, he would not give up and decided to try his luck with the poritz. He went to visit the poritz and spoke from his heart. “I will pay you one-third of this man’s debt now — in cash,” he said. “And I promise to bring you the rest within the next six months.” He tried to convince the poritz that his deal was certainly preferable to feeding an entire family in prison for an extended period of time during which the imprisoned father had no means to even try to earn money to cover the debt, but

the conceited poritz refused to give the offer any consideration. He seemed to be in an especially angry mood and threw Reb Moshe Leib out of his mansion, yelling after him intimidatingly. He even sent his menacing dogs to chase the tzaddik away as quickly as possible. Reb Moshe Leib’s last vestige of hope flickered into darkness. With tears streaming down his face, the tzaddik made his way to the road leaving the village. His efforts of the last few months had gone down the drain. For the first time in his life, it seemed the tzaddik had to admit defeat. He could not secure the release of the poor fellow and his family. It seems, Reb Moshe Leib thought to himself, that Hakadosh Baruch Hu doesn’t want this avodah from me. After all this toil and sweat, shame and disgrace, I did not even accomplish anything! I will stop pursuing the mitzvah of pidyon shevuyim and sit into the beis midrash and learn peacefully instead. Just then, the sounds of a horse and wagon interrupted Reb Moshe Leib’s internal struggle. It was a prison wagon, used by the local law enforcement to transport detained individuals. Inside sat a Yid who was being beaten mercilessly. Reb Moshe Leib motioned for the wagon to stop and asked for details. Apparently, the detainee was a Yid who had committed theft. His first thought was that it was a great chillul Hashem, but then the tzaddik reconsidered. He offered to pay for the man’s release, handing over the entire sum he had amassed on behalf of the poor tenant and his family. The deal was executed on the spot. Reb Moshe Leib was overjoyed at having saved a Yid from a dangerous sentence, but soon it became clear that the man

“Rebbe,” he said boldly, “I’m not giving up so fast” was not all that worthy of such kindness. He bluntly told Reb Moshe Leib that his primary income came from robbery, and he had no intention of changing course. His close call did not scare him off. “Rebbe,” he said boldly, “I’m not giving up so fast! This time I was caught… but I’ll make sure to be more careful next time.” For a moment, Reb Moshe Leib blanched. Then he recalled that the Baal Shem Tov used to say that sometimes Hashem sends us a message — even through a gentile in the marketplace. This is a message for me, the tzaddik decided. Failure is no reason to despair. My resolve must not weaken, even If I did not yet succeed at raising the necessary sum to help release that Yid and his family! To the contrary — I must continue trying until I succeed! Reb Moshe Leib resolved to try and raise the funds again, and this time, he met with success. In a short time, he raised enough money to bring the entire imprisoned family home. * * * * * The Chofetz Chaim explains why the Torah offers a detailed description of the wells that Yitzchak dug and the quarrels that ensued. After Yitzchak and his shepherds completed one well only to have it seized by the shepherds of Gerar, he picked himself up and tried again. When the same thing repeated itself a second time, Yitzchak and his men dug a third well. This underscores a message to us: One must never allow himself to despair. When faced with a challenge — either physical or spiritual — a Yid never gives up hope, but continues to try again and again and again. If he does not give up, he will ultimately merit the siyata d’Shmaya to succeed! Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

Hochul Contemplates Bail Law Changes To Counter Uptick in Anti-Semitic Crime, While Cuomo Offers Criticism Perpetrators of hate crimes may soon be facing tougher punishment, with Governor Kathy Hochul suggesting that the recent rise in anti-Semitic incidents could have her tightening up New York State’s bail laws. Answering questions from reporters after meeting with law enforcement officials in Albany on November 9, Hochul said she would be willing to look into toughening up laws that had criminals arrested and then turned back out onto the streets just hours later, thanks to bail reform instituted in 2019. Currently, New York classifies “making terroristic threats” as a felony, leaving prosecutors with no ability to keep offenders in prison. “We literally have no recourse,” said Erie County district attorney John Flynn, who also serves as the president of the District Attorneys Association of the State of New York. “We have no options unless they go out and do something again.” Although anti-Semitic incidents rose nearly 400% in the United States since the October 7 terror attack in Israel, Flynn said that he hasn’t had to prosecute any terroristic threat charges. Hochul had previously announced that she was allocating $50 million in funding to help law enforcement prevent and solve hate crimes and other offenses, and another $25 million in security funding for at-risk community groups and cultural centers. “My top priority is to protect the safety and wellbeing of all New Yorkers,” said the governor. “Let me be clear — we cannot allow hate and intimidation to become normalized.” Meanwhile, disgraced former governor Andrew Cuomo took advantage of the recent unrest to criticize Hochul, saying that she should be calling in the National Guard to keep New York’s Jewish communities safe in light of the unprecedented displays of anti-Semitism, which he described as “the worst that I have seen in my lifetime.” A statement released by Cuomo read, “It’s time to deploy the National Guard to Jewish centers and places of worship

and send a clear message: Hate has no place in New York, and anyone who trafficks in it will be held responsible to the fullest extent of the law.” Though Cuomo’s message was hailed by some, it rang hollow for others. “Cuomo is grandstanding,” former assemblyman Dov Hikind told the New York Post. “He’s trying to be relevant.” Responding to Cuomo’s statement on social media, City Councilman Kalman Yeger noted that Cuomo refused a request by elected officials to call in the National Guard to protect Jewish communities as anti-Semitic crimes escalated in the final days of 2019. “Hi Governor. Remember this?” wrote Yeger, atop a screenshot of the letter bearing his signature, along with those of State Senator Simcha Felder, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein and former City Council member Chaim Deutsch. In addition to asking for the National Guard to be deployed, the letter asked Cuomo to appoint a special prosecutor to deal with anti-Semitic violence. “Simply stated, it is no longer safe to be identifiably Orthodox in the State of New York,” read the letter. “We cannot shop, walk down a street, send our children to school, or even worship in peace. We implore you to take the immediate action as you are empowered to do, and send a clear message that the State of New York will protect its people.”

Adams’ Phones and Other Electronic Devices Seized and Returned in FBI Corruption Probe It was an unusual moment in New York City last week, with FBI agents approaching Mayor Eric Adams and asking him to turn over his electronic devices as part of a federal investigation into his 2021 mayoral campaign. The New York Post reported that the mayor handed over his cellphones and an iPad on November 6 after being presented with a court-authorized warrant. After returning home to Gracie Mansion, Adams discovered other electronic devices, and he contacted the FBI to make arrangements for those to be turned over as well. Sources said that the mayor

was aware that the FBI would be requesting his cell phones and other devices, and that he handed over a total of three cell phones and two tablets. The investigation appears to be focusing on September 2021 text messages between Adams (who was the Brooklyn borough president and in the midst of his successful mayoral campaign), the Turkish consul general, and Daniel Nigro, who was serving as the commissioner of the FDNY during that time. The messages in question addressed the opening of Turkey’s new diplomatic headquarters in Manhattan, with sources saying that the FBI is exploring the possibility that the Turkish government or another entity may have illegally contributed to the Adams campaign, receiving expedited approvals for their new headquarters in return. The FBI sent back the devices several days later. A statement issued by the mayor said that he had complied fully with the FBI and its probe. “As a former member of law enforcement, I expect all members of my staff to follow the law and fully cooperate with any source of investigation, and I will continue to do exactly that,” said Adams. “I have nothing to hide.”

Felder Applauds Early Release of $45M in School Safety Funding and Calls on State for More In the wake of the October 7 terror attack, a collaborative effort in the State Senate has resulted in the immediate release of $45 million in security funding for nonpublic schools. The New York State Education Department funding was originally scheduled to be available to nonpublic schools in April 2024. But with security concerns increasing in recent weeks, Felder worked closely with Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, Senator Shelly Mayer and several others to open up the applications process for the security funding without delay. “We stand united in our commitment to ensuring the safety of all students in New York State,” said Stewart-Cousins. “I am glad my conference was able to play a crucial role in the early release of $45 million in funds for non-public schools.” New York State had tripled its previous year’s allocation for private school safety equipment in its 2023–2024 budget because of the sharp rise in anti-Semitic incidents, but Felder has been collaborating with Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Giannaris to increase this year’s security funding from $45 to $90 million. Felder noted that when it comes to protecting schoolchildren, no price is too high. “Every yeshiva and Jewish school must have the funds necessary to ensure that to the best of their human ability, every student, rebbi and teacher is safe at school and returns home to their family at the end of the day,” said Felder. 80

JetBlue Pulls Thirteen Routes From NY Area JetBlue flyers may soon find themselves with fewer travel options, with the airline announcing that it would be discontinuing thirteen routes that fly out of New York’s three major airports in the coming months. The Points Guy reported that the cuts are due to two issues: the ongoing shortage of air traffic controllers, as well as the dissolution of a JetBlue-American Airlines alliance that had given both airlines the ability to trade take-off and landing slots. JetBlue will be eliminating its routes from JFK Airport to Ronald Regan Washington National Airport and to Burlington International Airport in Vermont, with the airline completely discontinuing all of its routes in and out of Vermont. Also discontinued are two JetBlue Newark routes: to Miami International Airport and to Boston Logan International Airport. Eight other routes that will be making their way into the history books as well are JetBlue flights from La Guardia to Bermuda’s L.F. Wade International Airport, Nashville International Airport, Charleston International Airport, Denver International Airport, Cape Cod Gateway Airport, Jacksonville International Airport, Portland International Jetport and Sarasota Bradenton International Airport. The first round of JetBlue cuts will begin in January, with the second taking place at the end of March.

Migrants Reject Floyd Bennet Field Shelter Accommodations New York City may have seen Floyd Bennet Field as the perfect place to house its overflow of migrants, but asylum seekers bussed to the former airfield last weekend clearly didn’t share their enthusiasm. Dozens of migrants arriving at the tent city set up at Floyd Bennett Field on November 12 took a brief look at the city-sponsored accommodations and promptly reboarded their buses in the hopes of returning to their previous shelters. plans to house 2,000 migrants at the site, whose remote location and lack of reliable fire hydrants has had many questioning its suitability as a shelter. One bus driver said that workers were shocked by the reaction of many of the migrants. “We were shocked when they turned around and left — shocked,” said the bus driver. “Only a few people stayed. We didn’t see that coming.” One asylum seeker said that no one told him where he was being taken. “I work in the Bronx,” said the man. “My kids go to school in the Bronx. For us to live out here is ridiculous.” “I cannot stay here,” said another. “This is crazy.” State Assemblywoman Jaime Williams, whose district includes Floyd Bennett Field, said that she would be contacting the Legal Aid Society, as well as Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul, asking them to revoke the lease on the site. She described the makeshift tent city as “a disaster waiting to happen,” saying that it would be inadequate in the cold weather, and that the site lacked crucial infrastructure, including a supermarket. A statement released by the mayor’s office said, “We have used every possible corner of New York City and are, quite simply, out of good options to shelter migrants.”

IKEA Expands Mirror Recall Eight months after it recalled nearly 40,000 frameless wallmounted mirrors sold in the United States and Canada, IKEA is advising another 25,000 customers in both countries to discontinue their usage, citing several instances of fallen mirrors caused by faulty mounting hardware. IKEA recalled LETTAN mirrors of all sizes last March, with 55 reports received globally of falling mirrors as of March, including one in the United States. Since that time, ten more reports of falling mirrors have been received. No injuries were reported in any of the incidents. All of IKEA’s LETTAN mirrors are marked with a manufacturing stamp listing the year and week in a YYWW format. The affected items have manufacture dates before and including 2105 (meaning early February 2021), as well as those with a supplier number of 21944 and a manufacturing stamp with a date before and including 2325 (mid-June 2023). Consumers are advised to stop using the recalled mirrors immediately and to contact IKEA for a free set of replacement wall fittings. Alternatively, consumers can return their mirrors at any IKEA store for a full refund, with no receipt required.

hoever came up with the idea that girls shouldn’t have school on Sunday clearly nev-

er raised girls. Given that the older girls did have school, and OZ and Simcha were in cheder, Chevi was left with no company, except a nagging Shifra who kept messing up the puzzle she was working on. Lani was lining a cookie sheet with parchment paper when Chevi stomped over and dumped a howling Shifra into her arms. “She’s annoying me!” she whined. “It wasn’t such a good idea to work on this puzzle on the floor. Can you transfer it to the table?” “No! It’s going to break!” Okay, that was probably true, but did she really have to shout like that? “And I’m not in the mood of doing this puzzle anymore. I’m bored.” Lani took a steadying breath. “Shifra’s also bored,” she stated. “Maybe take her to the park!” 92

“I can’t watch her in the park. She always runs away.” “Do you want to play something? Do an activity?” Lani most definitely was not bored. She planned on getting all of her Shavuos baking done that day, as well as all the laundry — which was hanging around the entire apartment — out of the way. A large volume of orders every day meant that she never had time for her own baking. “I want to bake with you,” Chevi said. No, please no. Maybe she was a bad mother, but she could not bake with kids’ “help.” She could play games with them, do crafts, read books. When it came to baking, she couldn’t handle amateur bakers standing in her way, begging to pour and mix. She stuck the parchment paper back into the drawer and closed it slowly. Sundays hadn’t always been this way. A few short months ago, Chevi had spent all Sunday, every Sunday with

Fraidy Stroh. It was just their routine; Lani and Riva hadn’t even given it any thought. A wild impulse came over her now. Who said they couldn’t recreate those pleasant Sundays? Maybe she and Riva were feeding into their girls’ politics. She turned to Chevi with a trying-to-look-impassive face. “How about going over to Fraidy’s house to play?” Chevi looked at her as though she’d suggested a trip to the moon. “No way,” she said. “I hate her. She’s such a baby.” Her face was puckered in contempt. The derision that flared in her eyes frightened Lani. She pushed the lined cookie sheet aside. Why? Why? What was making Chevi so embittered, so tightly wound, so moody? What was going on in her life? What was this monster that had gotten into her daughter? And most important, what could she do to make it stop? “Just go do something,” Lani begged. “Please. I’m busy here.” She turned her attention to her recipe card. Chocolate macadamia biscotti, here goes — Nothing. Shifra was crying. She’d gotten stuck between the wall and the table. Lani abandoned the recipe and went to rescue her. “I think you’re ready for a nap,” Lani declared. The rest of the day was spent putting Shifra to sleep. Lani tried the crib, the stroller, Simcha’s toddler bed, the crib again. Every time Shifra’s eyes closed, someone would talk, sneeze, cough or breathe, and the nap would be over. By the end of the day, Shifra had slept a total of 30 inconsecutive minutes, none of the laundry was folded, and the biscotti, the only thing Lani had managed to bake, was slowly disappearing from the counter, where she’d left it to cool. After serving the kids supper, Lani escaped to the construction zone upstairs, just to be with her own self for a few minutes. She made her way up to the second floor and stood at the entrance to the would-be baby room. This was the room where Shifra should have napped that day. The rest of the family would have been able to make all the noise they wanted in the playroom, and the baby would have slept soundly. The laundry would’ve been consigned to an actual laundry room, instead of the tension rod in the single tiny bathroom and draped over every chair in the apartment. They would have lived in a normal house, with space for all of its members to live and breathe. The sound of footsteps broke through her brooding thoughts. Her husband appeared in the hallway, thumbs hitched in his pockets. Lani squinted. His face was flushed, his lips stretched in a small, mysterious grin, and there was an unmistaken gleam in his eyes. 94

“Chaim Tzvi?” “We’re approved,” he said simply. “Approved?” The gleam was there, but at the same time, there was a weird sense of dejection on his face. That same… pinch that she’d been picking up in his voice lately. He took his hands out of his pockets and planted them on the makeshift banister. “I just hung up with Leo Grossman, the underwriter,” he said. “We got approved for a construction loan.” *****

“Miss Neider?” There was something in Mr. Gabioff’s voice that made Riva look up from her screen sharply. Shuli bent her head out of her own screen. “Yes?” “You assigned Camilla’s crew for 411 Figg Lane?” “I did. Yes.” “You assigned Camilla’s crew for 411 Figg Lane?” “I did. What’s your question?” Once again, Riva marveled over the girl’s cool veneer. Had she not gotten to know the real Shuli, she would have easily still assumed that her confidence was authentic, that she wasn’t the slightest bit intimidated by their boss. But all the confidence in the world couldn’t rescue her from Mr. G.’s wrath. He didn’t yell. He would never yell. A yelling would be too straightforward; it would be getting off easy. Instead, Mr. G. gazed at Shuli with absolute amusement, then he turned around and called out to Adina. “Mrs. Gartenhaus, would you ever assign Camilla’s crew to a threefloor new construction?” Camilla was a cleaning lady who chased Kleenup for business. Her crew consisted of herself, her sister, her friend and her daughter. None of them spoke English. None of them knew how to clean. The only time the staff gave this “crew” work was when they needed a sub-crew on short notice, extra hands on deck when a schedule was looking off. The question, Adina learned, was not rhetorical. “Would you?” their boss pressed. “I guess there was no other crew available,” Adina mumbled. Mr. G. performed his slow-motion nod. Then he turned to Chaya. “Would you ever send Camilla’s crew to clean a new construction, three floors plus a basement?” Chaya shrugged and turned back to her screen. “Mrs. Brinner?” he said, looking pointedly at Miriam. Miriam looked right back at him but didn’t say a word. Only Miriam was capable of doing that. Shoshi mumbled something incoherent when her turn

came, and then Mr. Gabioff addressed Riva. “And Mrs. Stroh, how about you?” Riva couldn’t face him. Instead, she looked past him and took in Shuli’s appearance. Her face was white and so stiff, it looked like she hadn’t been breathing for the past two minutes. If only she had the courage to stand up and say, “No, I wouldn’t, Mr. Gabioff, but that’s only because I work here long enough to understand the dynamics. Shuli is new here; she simply doesn’t know.” Or even a resounding, “Yes, I would!” just to spite him. But the most she could manage was a graceless shrug and a quick mutter, “Whatever.” Mr. Gabioff turned back to Shuli. “We only send capable crews to job sites,” he said with an incongruent softness. “It’s the ABCs of this business. The ABCs.” Then he shook his head from side to side, slowly, to allow the full impact of his exasperation to sink in. Nobody spoke after that. Everyone sat primly, keeping their eyes on their screens, until it felt like all the bleach from that morning’s delivery had leaked into the air. Riva tried focusing on the numbers on her screen, but a pattern of furious thoughts raced through her mind, and she couldn’t block it out. When Shuli left for her lunch break, Riva hurried after her and caught up with her in front of the building. “Psst, Shuli. Hi. I want to talk to you for a minute.” Shuli fingered the strap of her crossbody bag. “Okay.” Riva flushed. “Uh, maybe we should move over a bit, we’re in the camera’s range here.” They walked down the block and paused at the corner. Riva stared at her coworker. “I want to tell you something.” “What?” “Okay, so first, I know you know this, but you should hear it again, it’s important. This isn’t about you. The way he treated you today — it’s not about Camilla’s crew, it’s not about your business sense. It’s about him, his twisted pleasure in hurting people. He does it with everyone at every opportunity.” “I know.” She swallowed, and

Riva could feel the tears that filled her throat. “I know, and still, it’s so horrible. I’ve never felt so worthless in my life.” “Exactly. But you can’t allow him to have any power over you. This whole tyranny, intimidating — it’s his tool. It’s an illusion of strength. Believe me, this is the greatest sign of weakness. Strong people don’t have to feed off others to feel in control.” “It doesn’t help me in the moment. I can’t stand up to him.” “I know. None of us can.” Shuli kicked a leaf away. “Listen to me, Shuli,” Riva said. “You need to leave this place.”

“Huh?” “Look who’s talking, right? But that’s just the point. I’m here for so many years, my whole life revolves around this business, and I feel like I can’t untangle myself from it anymore. But you — you’re new here. You’re young, you don’t have a family to worry about yet. The decision is so much harder when you need the money and life is too stressful to deal with major changes.” Riva exhaled. “There’s so much opportunity ahead of you. Don’t do this to yourself. The longer you stay on, the harder it will be to leave.”

“I hear you.” Her eyes watered, but she blinked quickly and pulled a small smile over her face. “Thanks, Riva. I wouldn’t manage a day here without you.” Riva returned to her desk with a strange sense of tranquility. But later, when a downcast Fraidy walked through the door after school, Riva replayed the words she’d said to Shuli, and an uncomfortable question nagged at her. Am I making a mistake by not pulling her out of school right now? TO BE CONTINUED…

1

8

oz. sugar snap peas

3

scallions, sliced

3

F R E S H G AR NIS HE S (O P T I O NAL ) Soft-boiled egg Sesame seeds Jalapenos Chopped peanuts Scallions D IR EC T I O N S 1. Place all of the ramen bowl components in your slow cooker, except the ramen noodles. 2. Add one packet of the spice mix from the noodles to the CrockPot. Discard the spice mix from the second package of noodles. 3. Stir to mix everything together. Cover and cook on high for 3 hours. 4. If serving all of the ramen at once, add the noodles 3 minutes before serving. If you won’t serve it all immediately, it’s best to cook the ramen noodles separately by placing them in boiling water for 3 minutes. Drain the water, and store the noodles separately until serving, as they tend to get soggy quickly. 5. Place noodles into each individual bowl before serving, then top with remaining components. Garnish as desired. To make soft-boiled (jammy) eggs, drop the eggs with a ladle gently into water that has already been bought to a rolling boil. While the eggs are cooking, prepare an ice bath by placing cold water and ice in a large bowl. Cook the eggs for 7½ minutes, then drop them into the ice bath. Allow the eggs to cool. Then boil the ramen noodles.

While most of us go about our lives as ordinary human beings, some of us have been blessed with an accompanying human being — from birth. What’s it like to be a twin?

TWO ARE BETTER THAN ONE “Twinsies!” Chava squeals when she answers my call, and it’s immediately obvious that Chava considers her twin status an exciting part of her life. Turns out, this is a blessing she’s surrounded with in every direction. “We have four generations of twins in the family,” she tells me. Chava and Nichy are twins, their mother is a twin, and Chava has twin daughters and twin grandchildren. “At simchos, my son always tells me that he’ll give me mazel tov from a distance,” Chava notes with a twinkle. “He’s afraid that if he comes too close, he’ll be next.” Her twin, Nichy, doesn’t see what there is to be afraid of. “Being a twin is like having a built-in friend. There’s always someone to talk to, always someone to help sort through whatever’s on your mind, and listen while you get strong feelings out of your system.” The Zimmerman twins agree. “It’s like having a best friend who’s also your sister,” Frumet says. “What could be better?” Batsheva, her twin, says that Frumet is the only person, outside of her husband and kids, who’s involved in every little detail of her life. “We help each other with everything — from carpool to clothing to a hundred random favors. We turn to each for things large and small.” Her kids know the drill. “You’re going to call Tante Frumet now to tell her this story/ask her this question, right?” They are right. Because twins are used to having each other around, for as long as they’ve been around. They rely on each other for help, they enjoy each other’s company, and they trust each other with important things.

SEEING DOUBLE “There are two things in life for which we are never truly prepared: twins.” –Josh Billings

BATSHEVA

Interestingly, both sets of twins recognize that the bond was not diminished, and in fact grew stronger, after they got married. “Chava and I married into very different types of families,” Nichy shares. “My husband’s family is born-and-bred Hungarian, with the full definition, while Chava’s husband is yeshivish.” Their families’ lifestyles consequently diverged. “But it never mattered,” Chava hurries to clarify. “Although we set up very different homes, we’ve only grown closer over the years. The differences never stood in our way.” Because at the core, they remained connected with a bond that nobody but twins can comprehend. And each of them respects the other’s lifestyle.

YOU OR YOUR LOOKALIKE? Since they’re identical, the Halpert twins are used to people mixing them up. “When a person I don’t recognize waves to me, I simply wave back, assuming they think I’m Nichy,” Chava says. It’s when people stop to stare that she grows uncomfortable. “I recently had someone look me up and down, and I felt so self-conscious, I went into a store to check my reflection in a mirror, to see if there was anything wrong with how I was dressed.” If she’s feeling courageous, she approaches the person and asks if they happen to live in Montreal. When that happened recently, the woman looked at her like she’d lost my mind. “What do you mean?” she asked. “I live right across the street from you!” Regards from your neighbor, Nichy! Nichy says that it happens less often to her in Montreal, since people in her community don’t know Chava. “But now I’ve been spending some time in Monsey, and people wonder why I don’t greet them. It can get really uncomfortable.” Although the Zimmerman twins are not identical and hardly resemble each other at all, people still mix them up. “It happened all the time when we were younger,” Batsheva says. “People would 120

Frumet and I had a private language we liked to use, which we called Gibberish. We were once standing together on line at the kitchen window in camp, and we carried on a whole conversation in this language while waiting for our food. Suddenly, a different girl piped up and joined our conversation with our special code language. So much for our “privacy,” but we all laughed about it.

CHAVA Nichy and I were always classmates, and in eighth grade, Nichy was given the job of planning the menu for our graduation party. Even back then, she had an extremely generous personality, and if she was planning a menu, it was going to be mit di gantze hartz. When our teacher asked her to read the menu to the class, she read this whole elaborate list she had created. When she finished, our teacher commented, “Wow, Nichy. You must have been really hungry when you worked on this menu.” Immediately, I burst into tears. I couldn’t handle the shame of my sister! Embarrassed, I ran out of the room. My teacher came to talk to me, and I confronted her. “How could you do this to her? Do you know how many hours she invested in that menu?” I have to say, it took me a long time to forgive her, and when it came to my own twins, I made sure to put them into separate classes.

“THEY JUST COULDN’T BE BOTHERED TO LEARN WHO WAS WHO.”

tell us that they couldn’t tell us apart, but it wasn’t really true. The truth was that they just couldn’t be bothered to learn who was who.” She never understood this, until she got engaged and met her husband’s twin nephews. “Like Frumet and myself, they’re not identical, but I still found it hard to remember which one was Yossi and which one was Meir.” Not because they looked alike, but just because they were the same age, so it was hard to remember which one was which. “I realized that people mixed me and Frumet up in that sense. We were the Zimmerman twins, and if they didn’t make a point to learn which name went with which face, they didn’t know.” Frumet adds that it still happens to her all the time. “I find it a little insulting,” she says, laughing. “Like, can’t you be bothered to get to know who I am?”

PAST THE AGE OF MATCHING SWEATERS For better or for worse, people do call twins cute, especially when they’re dressed in adorable matching clothing. But as the twins grow into adults and start wearing clothing that reflects their individual tastes, the bond doesn’t evaporate. In fact, most twins will tell you that it only grows stronger. “It only makes sense for that to happen,” Batsheva explains. “This sibling is exactly your age and therefore usually in the same stage of life at any given point. Frumet and I have grown so much closer over the years, as we’ve gone through different life experiences together.” Frumet attributes some of this closeness to a technical reality. “My twin is the only one of my siblings who lives in the same city as me, and she happens to live around the corner from me. A few of our kids are very close in age, and we end up sending them to the same babysitters and playgroups, so we carpool. It’s super convenient because when our sched122

ules change (which is always), we can simply take the nephew home with us. Their aunt’s house is like their second home.” Chava and Nichy, who live hundreds of miles apart, do feel that it’s their twinhood that draws them close. “We have extra strong feelings for each other,” Chava shares. “When one of us goes through a particularly happy or sad time, the other instinctively feels it.” One may find herself in a bad mood without explanation, for instance, and only later discover what a hard day her twin had been having.

TWO PEOPLE, TWO ENTITIES As much as these sisters enjoy the perks of twinhood, most of them do not appreciate being lumped together as one unit. “The people who know us well don’t do it, but random acquaintances will treat us like one person,” Frumet remarks. “It’s annoying and ridiculous.” Nichy, on the other hand, never minded. “Our aunts and cousins always referred to us as ‘the twins,’ never by our individual names,” she says. “But I didn’t care because I loved Chava so much. I think twins today mind it more. For me, it was always the best thing in my life, and I never resented being a twin.” One plus one does not equal one. But in the case of twins, whether identical or not, two is its own special number. And their resemblances don’t end with their appearances. “People tell us that our hand motions are the same,” Chava says. “Also the expressions we use, and even our voices. And I absolutely can’t deny that. Sometimes when I listen to a message in my own voice, I think it’s Nichy.” She adds that their interests aren’t as similar, though, and they changed even more after they each got married. “I

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BEING A TWIN CHAVA Twins want to be treated like everyone else. They don’t appreciate remarks about how cute they are. (I have to admit, though, that I am guilty of doing the same!) As much as I love Nichy, I advise people to treat twins as individual people with individual lives and ideas.

NICHY If you mix us up, don’t feel bad. We can’t blame you because, hey, we really do look alike. For me, being a twin is a wholly positive experience. We probably faced more struggles growing up, because there were no parallel classes in the school we attended. But those struggles brought us closer. Even though we were sometimes blamed for the other’s sins, it never affected our relationship.

FRUMET I sometimes hear people talk about twins like it’s a curse. When they hear about a twin birth, they shudder and say, “Oif yenem gevinchen.” They don’t realize that every child is a blessing, and the twins themselves consider it a wonderful thing. I always had a partner. You know how when you’re married, you’re never alone, it’s no longer you against the world? I always had that. Also, people get stuck on the twins’ newborn stage, which is definitely challenging. But when they get older, these children always have each other and keep each other busy. It’s such a great thing!

BATSHEVA Twins are two different people and shouldn’t be lumped together. Never refer to them as “the twins” but rather by their names. It’s really special to have a twin, but that reality shouldn’t replace their individual identities.

124

wouldn’t even call it changed, but rather that our different interests were revealed. We grew up in a Hungarian home, but Nichy’s family is even more Hungarian, so she grew to appreciate aesthetics more, while I usually opt for practicality over beauty. If we’re both buying couches, I’ll opt for a dark, washable fabric, while Nichy will choose something beautiful and delicate.” Nichy notes some similarities. “We’re very much the same type of mother. Warm, giving, nurturing… None of our sisters are this way.” They were also both extremely homesick in camp, even though they had each other, and both cried their eyes out the first few days. With Batsheva and Frumet, you can’t mistake how alike they sound, the way they speak and the way they laugh. “Someone once heard Frumet’s voice through the phone when I was talking to her,” Batsheva recalls, “and without knowing who was on the line she was like, oh my goodness, you’re talking to your sister, right?” In terms of personality, Frumet maintains that she and Batsheva have nothing in common. “My strengths are her weaknesses, and vice versa.”

DOUBLE TAKE Twins often feel responsible for one another, as though by being born together they’d pledged to support, protect and stand up for each other at every opportunity. “Especially today, with Nichy living so far away from me and the rest of our family, I feel a certain obligation to her,” Chava admits. “Even with small things. If I find a good metziah, I’ll always think of her. We have a strong influence on each other.” She sees the same pattern with her mother and her aunt, who are also twins. “They go shopping together and throw stuff into each other’s carts. My aunt will tell my mother that she has to buy whatever it is. ‘I’m telling you, you’ll love it.’” It’s a forever-and-ever connection. “People compared us so much, I felt like I couldn’t be ‘better’ than her in any way, because they would notice and comment,” Frumet remembers. “Also, I got married three years before her. The truth is, you have that dynamic in other instances also, like if a younger sibling gets married first, or if your best friend gets married a long time before you. When you’re really close with someone, you feel their feelings.”

DOES SHARING ALWAYS MEAN CARING? While the perks of being a twin make it worth it, the reality does come along with its share of sacrifices. “Starting from a bed,” Chava relates. The Halpert twins had a high riser in their bedroom, and there was only one “wall” available for a bed to lean against. “Both of us preferred sleeping near the wall, so we took turns,” she says. “Sometimes by the day, sometimes by the week.” Their school did not have a uniform, so clothing turned into a whole big deal. “My mother insisted on dressing us the same until the age of eighteen. And even then, she would make sure we always wore something similar, either the style or the color.” The twins didn’t object, but they did argue a lot over which clothing to wear, and often had to compromise and wear what the other twin liked, just because they had to match. “At one point, we figured out a system of what we’d be wearing when. Until then, it would take us half an hour every morning to agree on what to wear. It was a little nuts.” There’s also always the running joke about who’s “older,” but sometimes the joke became perplexing. “Chava’s just three minutes older than I am, but in honor of that, she was always given the best babysitting opportunities and other privileges.” Outsiders often fail to realize that although they are twins, they appreciate owning their individual stuff. With the Halp-

ert twins, people would buy their other siblings individual gifts, and one gift for “the twins” to share. They didn’t quite appreciate that. “Also, let’s say we had the same Shabbos robe,” Chava says. “I wanted one of them to be mine. If Nichy’s robe got a hole and my mother fixed it, I didn’t want to wear that one. I wanted to wear my perfect one, even if it was technically the same.” The Halpert twins were engaged at the same time. Nichy describes how when they went shopping, they simply bought two of everything. “Our mother didn’t have the time to run around separately with each of us, so yes, there was some lost individuality there. But I didn’t mind it so much. We were so happy to be in the same stage, going through the whole excitement together.” The Zimmerman twins had less of an individuality issue. “Our parents were great about treating us as two separate people,” Batsheva says. “Still, we had to share everything, and we did everything together.” “All of our siblings had their own rooms,” Frumet adds, “but Batsheva and I had to share. It wasn’t really fair.” Batsheva brings up another point. “Twins were more of a rarity when we were younger, not as common as they are today. Wherever we went, people bombarded us with questions, and I found it annoying. The questions were silly, the kind of things they’d never think of asking anyone else. And for us, being asked the same question by everyone, it got boring and repetitive.” But despite the sacrifices, both sets of twins wouldn’t trade the blessing of twinship for anything in the world.

THE ZIMMERMAN TWINS HAD LESS OF AN INDIVIDUALITY ISSUE. “OUR PARENTS WERE GREAT ABOUT TREATING US AS TWO SEPARATE PEOPLE” 126

My mother was an avid bookworm, and my gregarious European grandmother simply could not relate to her shy and bookish daughter. “You need to have twins so you’ll be too busy to read,” she frequently declared. While my mother never was blessed with twins, I daresay we kept her busy enough. Nevertheless, all the mothers of multiples I spoke with agreed to this: Twins are a unique challenge, but also bring the family an extra measure of incredible nachas, bracha and joy. I spoke with five experienced mothers of multiples, whose twins are now adults, and walked away with some wisdom for my own singleton brood, which I’m sure would be doubly valuable if I were parenting twins. I probably kept the twins in strollers for as long as I could, but we didn’t have fancy double strollers like people have now. I had another baby soon after, and my twins had to learn how to hold on when they were outside. They were really very easy babies — probably easier as babies and toddlers than most, and even more so because they kept each other occupied.

2 and 3

4 and 5

TZILA

1 and 2

I got loads of comments and strange looks — even dirty looks — but having my babies in toddler harnesses was literally the only way I could get out without worrying about losing one of them, or worse. I got lots of flak (I guess their harnesses were reminiscent of pets on a leash), but it was either that or choosing which one to save when they would run across the street in opposite directions.

Two for the price of one? Think again!

When my twins were babies, we lived on a busier street. The house wasn’t big enough for our growing family, and although the location and neighborhood were ideal for us, I chose to move rather than do construction since I couldn’t fathom raising twins on anything but an exceptionally quiet street, without constant traffic, so they would be safe.

It’s hard for people with only singletons to understand that raising twins, especially when they are younger, is not a case of one plus one. You are outnumbered in a big way, totally consumed with the care of these little people. It’s not just one baby twice; it’s a lot more consuming than that. But they do get older eventually, and the nachas is immeasurable.

When I had my first set of twins, I felt so incredibly blessed and wanted to share my joy with the universe. I remember going out with them in a stroller for the first time and wondering why nobody was out on that beautiful day to share my utter rapture. When I had my second set of twins (after a singleton in between) I remember sitting at my window on a similarly beautiful day, watching everybody outside. This time I was stuck inside with all five kids, feeling forlorn and wondering why nobody was knocking on the door to help me. Once there were other kids in the picture, getting out was practically an impossibility.

On matching clothing With a boy and a girl this obviously wasn’t such an issue, but I would say: Ask them! Let them decide if they like to wear matching or want to express their individuality through their clothing.

YITTY

Don’t dress identical twins in matching clothing. It might be cute, but it’s plain confusing. I remember my husband once explaining to somebody that although our boys are identical, you can tell them apart through certain mannerisms they each have, and he proceeded to give

an example, saying, “And that’s how I know that’s Shmuel”— except it was Nechemia! We never dressed our twins in matching clothing but would often do coordinating, or the same items in two different colors.

MIMI

With identical twins, assigning them each a color was super helpful for people who couldn’t correctly identify them otherwise.

On raising them as individuals

MIMI

As with all children, the goal is to help them actualize their unique potential while developing their talents and individuality. Twins are no different in that sense — except that there are two of them. All of the parents interviewed expressed their conscious decision to treat each twin as a distinct entity and not lump them together with their sibling — but they all also admitted that their twins had such different personalities (yes, even the identical ones) that retaining their individuality wasn’t much different than between regular siblings.

Those were joyful years… I remember those years as very joyful years.

Hashem has granted you a wonderful extra measure of bracha. It’s an unbelievable bonus that was bestowed upon you.

TZILA

ALL MOMS AGREED

Any friend, teacher or rebbi who tried to get to know our identical twins as individuals couldn’t even begin to understand how they could be confused with one another, despite their being completely identical. They are such unique people, and each of them does their own thing. But then, of course, you had other people who struggled to tell them apart.

MALKY

Having a built-in playmate was invaluable!

I remember when… I came into the kitchen to find that my toddler twins had each pushed a chair up to the sink, turned on the faucets, and managed to press the sprayer button. I don’t know how long they had been at it, but there was a veritable mabul on the floor! Double trouble? Undeniably so – but double bracha too!

MIMI

People used to ask my middle child, the only singleton in the family, what it feels like to not be a twin. To all of us, this was a ridiculous question. What does it feel like to be the tallest, oldest, youngest and so on? There was no feeling of our twins being special by virtue of being a twin. It was only people outside the family who made a fuss.

My twins were still babies, and I came into their room to feed them. They were both in their cribs, and I turned to my daughter. She looked stricken, and even though she was non-verbal at the time, she pointed at her brother who had banged himself in his crib and was crying. She was clearly telling me, “You can’t come to me first — he needs you more!” They took care of each other from such a young age.

Don’t try to raise them as one unit. They are distinct individuals with unique personalities. But don’t worry — they’ll let you know it!

I had just finished feeding one twin and moved on to the other — who kept refusing to eat, while his brother kept crying. Boy was I chagrined when I realized that I was trying to re-feed Baby A while Baby B was still hungry!

From a small thing like a piece of chocolate enjoyed in private to something bigger, I carved out some iota of time just to hold onto myself. Do call them by name! We never called them “the twins.” They were two separate people and didn’t deserve to be defined by their sibling status.

We always made sure to put our twins in separate classes. (We automatically nixed a school that didn’t offer parallel classes.) Although they were friendly with each other’s friends, they each always had their own group of friends, and they didn’t do everything together. If they got invited to a birthday party, we only sent the twin who was friends with the birthday girl, even though the hosts would invite both twins in order not to have the other feel left out.

MIMI

Let them actualize their unique selves. Help them spread their wings separately, follow their own interests, and develop their own talents.

SHAINA

WRAPPED N’SCENT

Don’t make assumptions and don’t have preconceived “shitahs.” This is true for every child, but with twins in particular, people tend to make assumptions: They should never be in the same class, or, It’s great for them to be together. When it came time for us to choose a school for our twins, we asked the yeshiva we were considering if they had a policy about twins being in the same class. They answered that since every situation is unique, they don’t have a set policy about twins. Rather, they take into account the kids themselves, the parents’ feelings and all relevant factors. When we heard that, we knew right away that this was the school for us. We appreciated the flexibility to make decisions as we watched our children develop, rather than according to a set policy. Over the years there were times when our twins were in the same class and times when we separated them, always based on what we felt was best for them at that time.

MALKY

Pay extra attention to the child immediately below the twins. A singleton right below twins (especially if the twins and the singleton below them are all the same gender) can have a hard time finding their place in the family and often ends up feeling like a lonely third wheel. When my twins were in first grade and the daughter below them was in Pre-1A, I actually kept the younger daughter home for English that year. This was logistically very hard for me as I had to get out of the house with younger ones in tow every single day that year, but I felt like the extra time she spent with me without being in the twins’ shadow literally saved her life. She blossomed from a slightly struggling student into a powerful and confident child and then adult. I believe that the extra attention was pivotal in her development.

TZILA

On the same note, make sure to spend individual time with every single child separately — even your twins. I first developed a set-in-stone routine for spending a few minutes of special time with every single child at their bedtime. Because this was based on a set bedtime schedule, I used to do the twins together. I realized soon that it wasn’t working and made sure to give them each a few minutes separately. As an aside, these few minutes are so grounding and comforting to every child, providing children with a sense of security and unconditional love. I know this is true because not only do my daughters do this with my grandchildren after having experienced it growing up, but even my daughters-in-law do it — and they didn’t hear about it from me!

“I’m so happy for you!” everyone will gush. “Good for you. You deserve it.” “It” is none other than Chandice, in my case, or another baby nurse, flown in from Jamaica or another faraway place to help care for your newborn twins because you’re trying to run a house, tend to two (or more) infants in addition to the rest of your family,

1. Your bedroom is going to become your refuge. As big as your house is, and as petite as your nurse may be, you’re going to feel invaded, pining for a secluded little haven to call your own. Because at any given time, a friendly face can pop into your line of vision, making use of the same living quarters. Goodbye, sacred coffee rituals with yourself. They may just become daily morning dates where you get to know your nurse’s family, culture and the various people popping onto her screen all day. Goodbye, private laundry room and the freedom to plan your laundry schedule at whim. Couches are shared spaces, and that porch you were going to escape to? You’re going to find your hired help there, sipping her coffee, just when you crave a moment of solitude. So your bedroom is going to become your safe spot. There you’ll carry on phone conversations that you’re not in the mood of broadcasting, there you’ll do your reading, and on desperate days, you’ll even drink your coffee there. Oh, and you’ll also want to have a place where you can eat your chocolate, because…

and, unlike some other people, you’ve never mastered this runningon-no-sleep thing. So what can you expect now that you’re a lady of leisure, as a lucky mother of delicious new babies, who has a baby nurse to do all the work while you get all the fun? Let me share a little glimpse of what it’s like.

The Boro Park View

149

2. You’re going to want to hide your chocolate. Unless you’re very generous about sharing your treasured stash of pick-me-ups, you’re going to have to be discreet. Because those things we learned back in kindergarten about not eating chocolate — or ice cream, piping omelets or smoothies, for that matter — in front of another person without sharing… well, it really still kind of holds true. And you can’t lock up your cupboards, either, unless you can equip your nurse with her very own dining area (a marvelous idea, if your home layout allows for it). And trust me, your nurse loves chocolate, and when she becomes friendly enough (it won’t take long), she’ll have you add several bars to your weekly grocery order. And she’ll sweetly ask for vegetable omelets, because you make awesome ones.

3. You’ll be worrying about balanced meals. Hopefully you’ll have figured out (because the lady who was the reference your nurse provided told you this amazing tip) that you should let your nurse prepare her own breakfast and lunch, supplying her with her own Betty Crocker or toaster oven and little corner to cook, so that only dinner is your responsibility. But dinner alone will have you scratching your head. Tuna sandwich Tuesday has to be abolished, for starters, because, hello, what you can pretend within the safe confines of family stays within the family. You will also find yourself reintroducing vegetables to the menu, because though your kids don’t touch them and you have already made your husband forget at this point that veggies are a mandatory part of a balanced meal, you need to make sure your nurse is well fed. Kiddush Hashem, among some other reasons. And also, you run a functional home, you know? And then you’ll even dig out the 16-quart pot because, remember soup? No, it’s not only a Shabbos or Yom Tov food. And the thing with pizza is that your nurse doesn’t like pizza, so there goes that. And then one day, as you’re perusing your cookbook for another vegetable idea (can’t have salad every night), your nurse will casually mention that back at home she used a gallon of milk every day, because turns out, cereal and milk was the meal of choice there.

4. Your grocery 5. You’ll have more guilt bill will rise than you can digest. even more. “Why are we spending this much on groceries?” your husband will ask, baffled. “I know that prices have skyrocketed, but we’re spending almost $200 more a week!” Yes, breadwinner be warned, because on top of the expense of paying full-time help is the fact that you’re now feeding another adult. And it turns out that she likes nuts, and specific types of cereals, and a lot of fruit, and Greek yogurts. And listen, we don’t starve people around these parts, so we have to make sure there’s always a selection. So yes, factor this one in too. Or don’t, and just do what you must, and may Hashem rain His bounty upon you.

“Do they think the nurse is their mother?” you will agonize when you watch your babies coo to her. Because here’s the thing: You want her to talk to them, to interact and be loving, and yet, you want to be their mother. “Am I really normal to leave the house without them?” you will fret as you make your grocery order solo (and hyperventilate over the credit card bill when you go to fetch the second wagon). You’ll hear a little wail in the night and then turn over luxuriously, your heart jumping in guilt over the little cry answered by someone else, too many minutes after it started. You’ll do the things you must do, and some things you want, but throughout it all, your heart will be pulling to little people who really belong in mama’s hands right now.

6. You’ll have to put some boundaries in place. The difference in cultures will require you to do some explaining, both to your nurse and your other children. And I know you want to be nice, but you’re going to learn sooner and later that firmness at first will lend itself to niceness, because you can’t have your kitchen tampered with. You don’t want your kids to be privy to anything your nurse occupies herself with all those hours while you grit your teeth, fetch a crying baby, and wonder if the ordeal is even worth it. You want her to take care of the kids in a manner that matches your maternal instincts, and though you’ll obviously need to let go of some things, there are going to be certain things you want to make sure are getting done. And for that, you will have to speak up.

7. Your house will have new smells and sounds. So it’s 10:00 p.m. and you’re used to quiet? Guess what, you might have to get used to singing in the shower. The house might rock with it, and all you’ll be able to do to stave it off is hide in your refuge with earplugs. Or sit on the porch. And pray hard that the singing doesn’t wake anyone. Scents, whether foods (some people love tuna, be forewarned) or fragrances and sprays, are going to waft all over the place and… you’ll just get used to it. There isn’t much of a choice!

8. You’re going to become the “I need a Shabbos goy” solution for many. You will think a hundred times before hinting to your nurse when you need the help of a goy on Shabbos, weighing the need over the respect you want to give. And just as you decide to (try to) sleep all night with the light on, there will be a knock at the door, and a sweet, freckled-face girl will ask, “Can Chandice come help us with an issue we’re having with our A/C?”

9. One day you’re going to say: Forget about sleep; just give me my breathing space back. And hopefully you’ll find the new reality doable and not just go back to the drawing board to find a nurse who will be worth the sacrifice. Mazel tov!

Five Questions You Can Expect To Be Asked Is the help subsidized, or are you paying out of pocket? Would you like to have my tax return, too?

Take Two Two babies, one for each hand, makes it necessary to reduce certain tasks to simple one-handed actions. Here are some work- and spacesaving purchases that are tried and tested buys for moms of twins (or any baby).

Did you put a camera into her room? Please don’t make me worry more than I already do.

Did your nurse train your babies to sleep through the night? Do you really think someone with my family’s DNA would allow themselves to be trained?

Can’t you tell her not to use her phone in your house? Well, no.

Does she help you with your housework? Can you give me the number of a nurse who does that? Thanks in advance.

Warm water dispenser For those who use formula, having water ready at the perfect temperature all day (and at night, especially, when you’re waking up double as often) is a great convenience. Goodbye bottle warmers and temperature testing a combination of boiled and bottled water. And what’s more, the moderate temp of the water makes it safe to keep on your nightstand.

Cotton baby mats With twins, especially fussy and active ones, diapering and even feeding on the floor is often the most convenient and safest option. Soft mats are perfect for changing, playing and even little naps if no one else is around to wake them.

Rubber twisters It’s not a simple matter to maneuver two Doonas at once, but keeping 24-inch sturdy rubber or silicon ties handy converts two Doonas into a double Doona in just a minute. Use one gear tie toward the top of the handlebar and the other lower down, right near the base.

Babyletto Gelato cribs These cribs are neat and compact, making them a perfect side-by-side furniture option that doesn’t overwhelm the entire room.

Supportive bath slings These bath slings with 360-degree protection (which are great for bathing any baby) can be used on the double under a watchful eye and with quick hands, especially if you have another little someone on hand to hand you soap and towels.

Turtleneck bibs When two babies are clamoring for food at once and you race between the two, chances are there’s no extra time or hands for mess control. Prevent the dribbles of food from reaching the neck and clothes with absorbent mockneck bibs that keep the mess and drools at bay.

Primo high chairs These well-priced high chairs are supportive, compact, foldable and lightweight, perfect for any baby or tight space, especially when there are two of them in your kitchen. The top tray is removable, leaving you a second tray to use in a pinch if you don’t get to wash the tray in time for the next meal — something bound to happen when your hands are, baruch Hashem, this full.

Back-zippered jackets No need to use two hands to hook the bottom stoppers of the zipper to the backdrop of double protests. Jackets with top-down back zippers like these go on and off easily and all it takes is a one-handed zip to get the kids dressed and undressed. It’s also helpful for babies who tend to fall asleep in the stroller. The coats can be gently removed without repositioning the baby.

If the women in the bungalow colony marveled at the sight of two of their own each cradling a set of similarly aged twin boys, they weren’t marveling for naught. There was more to the story. The story began one year earlier, when I was brave enough to venture past my front door with a half-dozen little kids — including a set of five-week-old twin boys and a fifteen-month-old toddler — to spend the summer in upstate New York. It wasn’t all bravery, though. The country offered space, a breeze, some shade. Staying behind in the sweltering city would have meant remaining cooped up with a gaggle of little kids, with no hint of air to speak of. So we headed upstate, babies in tow, for a summer to remember. (This would turn out to be our last hurrah; we moved to Monsey that winter and stayed home after that.) I don’t remember much about our trip up, or what it was like to pack for the country and unpack in the bungalow when I was walking around with a baby glued to each shoulder. But I do remember the rest of the summer, and what took place when I appeared outdoors first thing in the morning. Every morning, I would step out of my bungalow, a baby in each arm, a bottle in each hand, and a toddler hanging onto my skirt. And every morning, two women — we’ll call them Chany and Perel — were at my side in an instant. They’d each grab a baby, and then a bottle, and sit down to feed my babies while I caught my breath. And so the summer wore on, with my babies growing

more alert and more curious with each passing day. July gave way to August, and they outgrew their newborn size clothing and filled out the next size. My heart swelled with pride. By the end of the summer, I was heading home with a pair of robust three-month-old little boys, and a toddler who was a whole seventeen months old. I had no words with which to thank Chany and Perel, only a heap of brachos for the help they gave me over the summer. What would I have done without them? Soon fall arrived, and winter followed. Then — mazel tov, mazel tov! Chany had given birth to twin boys! We’d hardly

had a chance to absorb the news when a double mazel tov came again. Now it was Perel’s family who was blessed with twin boys! What news! What bracha! Coincidence? I don’t think so. We didn’t return to the country the following summer, but Chany’s and Perel’s families did. And so the bungalow colony played host to some more twin boys — only this time, it wasn’t two babies, but two sets of babies, who grew strong and plump in the summer sunshine.

Sippurei tzaddikim is one of the hallmarks and foundations of mesorah and of implanting emunah into our hearts and the hearts of our children... When it comes to tales of emunah, bitachon, middos, and gadlus b'Torah, nobody told stories like RAV KALMAN KROHN ZT"L . Rav Kalman's stories weren't just ma'asalech. His sippurei tzaddikim, like his own essence, were saturated with yiras Shamayim, middos tovos, and Torah lessons. Many of the stories Rav Kalman related are not well-known, yet they are all sourced in mesorah and the sefarim hakedoshim. And they are all action-packed, full of heart-stopping twists and turns that may well cause readers to get the goosebumps! In this book, we present a sampling of some of Rav Kalman's best stories for readers of all ages, to learn from and enjoy. Sink yourself into these amazing true tales, and let their power - and that of Rav Kalman's own neshamah - capture and enrapture you.

I was excited about married nieces. One of them, Shiffy, kept bringing the getting back out there and looking forward to conversation back to my work. She wanted to see my using my tape measure again. And of course, I reorganized my whole laundry room before before-and-after pictures and had a million questions my maternity leave was up! about what I do. I wondered if she was interested in The week before I was scheduled to start, going into the field herself. my niece Dina called me. It was a little out of the blue, but I thought that maybe she wanted to come for Shabbos. We schmoozed about our babies, and then she paused and said, “I I didn’t hear anything more from Shiffy after Shabbos, was there when you were talking to Shiffy at the Shabbaton. and I forgot about the conversation. Life was busy, baruch Could you tell me more about working as an organizer?” Hashem. I had an eight-week-old newborn, and it was time I was surprised. Not only because I had been expecting to go back to work; I was getting pressure from clients who it to be Shiffy, if anyone, to show interest, but also because

ORGANIZE ME Q: What’s the single most significant change that I can implement to make my home function more smoothly? A: Keep everything in the house in the correct room, which is the room where it’s used. Having items where they belong keeps your home running smoothly. Keep the hairbrush and accessories in the room where the girls do their hair, keep the diapers and wipes where you change the baby (not where you think you should change the baby… but where you actually do it). Being able to grab what you need right where you need it without having to run around the house collecting supplies keeps your household flowing smoothly.

cepting small jobs on her own. She would call me with occasional questions, and shared fantastic before-and-after pictures. This wasn’t a dream anymore; she was in business. I still marvel when I think about her grit. Many women want to make their homes more functional, but feel overwhelmed at the task. (Sounds familiar?) Organizing your home might not be easy — in fact, many things in life aren’t. But whenever I hit a challenge, I have Dina to think about. I may have taught her a profession, but she will always be my inspiration. THE END

TAKE IT HOME Whenever I’m working with a client, I find myself marveling at how the smallest, least expected change is what makes the customer most happy. I come to these homes, completely transform the chaos in their pantries and playrooms, but they gush and rave the most about the new hook in the kitchen for their calendar. Look around your house, and think of that one thing that drives you crazy. The thing that’s always in use but kind of homeless; the thing that floats around from drawer to drawer and you’re always looking for it when you’re in a rush. A pen at homework time, the toddler’s shoes in the morning... Then pinpoint the problem: The calendar doesn’t fit in the junk drawer, so I can never find it when I need it. The kids do homework in the dining room and don’t go back into the kitchen to put the pens in the drawer, so they get lost. The toddler just kicks off his shoes wherever, and certainly doesn’t remember where they are.

Where Warmth Meets Fashion

Now brainstorm for solutions. Can the calendar live inside a cabinet, or hang on the wall? Consider placing a decorative cup to hold pens in the dining room so they don’t simply vanish. Create a defined parking spot for the toddler’s shoes, and train him (and yourself) to put them there each day. Now that you have a plan, purchase the supplies you need to implement it: a hook for the calendar, a pretty little vase for the pens, a cubby or container for the shoes. Look out for these small daily frustrations, and see how you can solve them. As you make small changes one at a time, you’ll find your whole life feeling more organized. Good luck!

BRING YOUR CHANUKAH PARTY TO THE NEXT LEVEL!

G

oing out with one child can be a challenge; two children makes you reconsider going out at all. Twins might be twice the fun, but they’re half the mobility. Enter the double stroller! And it’s not only mothers of multiples who appreciate them; mothers of children close in age are also exceedingly grateful for the double stroller.

The first double stroller made its appearance in the Victorian era, when specialty baby items were becoming more popular and paved city streets gave rise to the leisurely family stroll. Although these early contraptions were simply small wooden wagons with two benches for the children to sit on, generally only the upper classes were able to afford them. Double strollers became more popular during the post-war baby boom, with several new models being patented. These included a “doubledecker” model, which seated one child above the other, and the first version of a tandem. In 1966, British engineer Owen Maclaren developed the very first collapsible “umbrella stroller,” which was soon adapted for double occupancy. Nowadays, parents can choose between side-by-side, tandem, or convertible strollers in a plethora of designs and colors.

If I were to ask you which double stroller currently on the market is the most expensive, something tells me you’d guess the Bugaboo Donkey. Well, hee-haw! That distinction actually goes to the Peach Designer Collection Cerium Twin. Manufactured by the iCandy company, this sleek, black stroller comes with a whopping price tag of $2,288. Unlike the common side-by-side or tandem design, this pricey vehicle stacks your bundles of joy à la bunk beds. As New Yorkers know all too well, space is at a premium.

A Canadian mom, Tifanne Thayme, set a new Guiness World Record on December 17, 2022 for the fastest time finishing a marathon while pushing her two little ones in a double stroller. She crossed the finish line with her kiddies packed snugly into the family’s BOB Gear double jogging stroller after 3 hours, 20 minutes, and 58 seconds.

While the average width of a side-by-side is 30 to 32 inches, the award for the narrowest one available would go to the Mountain Buggy Duet. At only 24.5 inches wide, you definitely don’t have to worry about scraping the frame while walking through a doorway.

ACCORDING TO FORBES MAGAZINE, THE FOLLOWING ARE THE TOP FIVE DOUBLE STROLLERS FOR 2023 IN SEVERAL CATEGORIES: BEST DOUBLE STROLLER WITH A SMOOTH RIDE:

BEST DOUBLE STROLLER FOR INFANT AND TODDLER:

NUNA DEMI GROW DOUBLE STROLLER

BUGABOO DONKEY 5 DUO STROLLER

PRICE: $1,200

PRICE: $1,859

Nuna is a Dutch brand well known for its dual suspension, which has all of their strollers practically gliding down the street. The Demi Grow is a convertible stroller that can be used as a single or a double, with one child’s seat below the other. Insanely easy to maneuver, this double stroller is beautifully crafted, with leather details, a telescoping handlebar (very appreciated by tall parents), and a magnetic harness buckle that allows you to effortlessly strap your children in safely. Definitely worth checking out.

Nicknamed the Cadillac of double strollers (with a price tag to match), the Bugaboo Duo is a chic side-by-side that’s perfect for a toddler and a baby. With several seat configurations, a beautiful bassinet, and car seat adaptability, the Duo also features puncture-proof wheels so that flat tires are simply no longer a thing. Parents love the strong, sturdy frame, the ease of adjusting from double to single mode, and the ability to add a buggy board to accommodate a third child.

BEST DOUBLE JOGGING STROLLER:

BOB GEAR REVOLUTION FLEX 3.0 DUALLIE DOUBLE

BEST SINGLE TO DOUBLE STROLLER:

UPPABABY VISTA V2 AND RUMBLE SEAT PRICE: $1,250

The most common adjective used to describe this stroller is “easy.” Easy handlebar adjustments, easy snap-in seats, and easy overall operation. The storage basket is spacious, making it easy to store all your baby and toddler paraphernalia. Parents absolutely love it!

PRICE: $800

For parents who take their fitness and self-care seriously, the BOB Duallie Double is a fantastic option. With tough air-filled tires and an excellent suspension system, this stroller can coast over the toughest terrain without jolting the children inside. With ten storage pockets and a wide cargo basket, there’s plenty of space for both workout and baby gear, so grab your kids and run!

BEST BUDGET DOUBLE STROLLER:

GRACO READY2GROW LX 2.0 PRICE: $250

Since 1926, the Graco company has been universally trusted for its quality, durability and reliability. Significantly cheaper than previously mentioned models, the Ready2Grow offers many fine features. Offering two seats, a bench seat and a standing platform, this stroller has many adjustable travel options that grow along with your child. While it doesn’t roll as smoothly as luxury strollers, parents find it to be of surprisingly good quality for this super-affordable price. November 15, 2023

THE BLIND WATCHMAN Reb Yose's kindness extended to all, even those who wronged him. His former wife and her wealthy second husband fell on hard times following the latter's loss of sight, when he could no longer be a watchman. Hearing of their dire straits, and despite her abusing Reb Yose during their marriage, the merciful rabbi housed and fed the destitute couple for the rest of their lives. (‫ג‬/‫)בראשית רבה י"ז‬
