Cutting the Ribbon with Class “We make no apologies for setting high standards.” The bar has officially been raised. The Waterfront, an adult day healthcare center, celebrated a white glove ribbon cutting amidst much pomp and ceremony. Amongst the attendees were councilman Kalman Yeger and other influential celebrities and entertainers. The occasion was an introduction to the new era of senior daycare that was not to be missed. The crowds were entranced by the quality of the entertainment and the high-class standards of the event. Shulem Lemmer’s sweet voice rang out, Marc Garfinkel’s illusionary tactics enraptured, and the offerings of Soho Platters were a feast for the eye and an explosion for the palate. The Waterfront did not disappoint in any aspect. If the ribbon cutting event is any indication to the facility’s standards, the clients in their care are in superior hands. It was a mere introduction to the caliber of the amenities, programs and medical services that The Waterfront is offering to their clients.

The Waterfront Stands Out It is unlike any senior program that New York has ever encountered. It’s a facility where only one thing matters: Standards.

Program Standards

• Educational lectures • Nutrition classes • Zumba classes • Horticultural therapy • Scenic outings • Art classes • World renowned entertainers There’s more. A lot more. Come See.

Amenity Standards At a time of life when wellbeing is crucial, the comfort of the seniors should take high priority. The Waterfront anticipates their clients’ needs even before they can articulate them. • Exercise room • Spa Treatment • Spacious outdoor grounds • Gourmet breakfast and lunch

Care Standards We know seniors. We understand seniors. We cater to seniors. Ultimately, it’s the standard of care that matters most. The Waterfront delivers on what matters most. • On site medical staff • On site dietician • Physical, occupational and speech therapy • Medication management • Chronic disease management • Health monitoring and education • Mental health services • Nutritional assessments • Caregiver support and education • Outstanding recreation programs

The itinerary prepared for the seniors should be a reflection of the respect we have for them. It should acknowledge their intelligence and inspire their creativity.

At The Waterfront, the senior in your life will be the priority of ours.

Bingo and crafts wouldn’t cut it for The Waterfront. Instead, our seniors enjoy:

Schedule your private tour today.

Come see for yourself.

MONEY MATTERS (Re: Climbing the Money Mountain) First of all, thank you for your practical articles. Your current column on budgeting is super-informative. I hope the couple manages to figure out their financial issues fast! I’d like to use this space to address an uncomfortable reality that is happening to many mosdos here in Monsey. They’re struggling financially. But who isn’t nowadays, you ask? The problem is, though, that when it comes to campaigns and solicitors who call you on behalf of a mosed that hasn’t paid its rebbeim or teachers in a while (and that’s for a separate discussion!), many people don’t respond as warmly as they can. Let’s be honest. It feels so much better to donate to an organization that helps kids with cancer, r”l, or to some place in Russia that’s rebuilding their beis hachaim (and those are very important causes). However, when we hear that our sons’ chedarim can’t pay their bills, we tend to think, “Let the administrators take care of it! They’ll figure it out like they usually do.” This is precisely what Chazal meant when they told us to donate tzedakah to people in our own city first. The importance of realizing this cannot be stressed enough. Let’s hope that our schools and chedarim stay debt-free and have the ease to function without worrying about how to pay the next month’s payroll! And in that zechus, may we be zoche to raise our children easily, while seeing lots of nachas! Just Another Parent

THE HUNT FOR HEALTH CONTINUES (Re: The Winter Hunt for Health, Issue 16) I found the article on humidifiers to be a real eye-opener. Suddenly, all of our minor winter discomforts make sense. However, my doctor discouraged me from using a humidifier because, from his experiThe Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. Please email comments@thebpview.com.

ence, they can cause more problems in the long term due to the bacteria that can breed in a humidifier and can then be blown into the air. Any advice? E.S.

RAV CHAIM SHMUELEVITZ

RUCHY REESE RESPONDS: Thank you so much for your letter! Your doctor is absolutely correct in his concern over bacteria being spread through use of humidifiers. In fact, in 2012, seven children were hospitalized in Eretz Yisroel from humidifier-associated Legionnaires’ disease, a particularly aggressive form of pneumonia that is caused by bacteria that can sometimes be found in standing water. Some of the cases were fatal, lo aleinu. As a rule, bacteria love standing water and moist environments, which means humidifiers have the potential to turn into bacteria-colonized danger zones. There’s good news, though: With proper maintenance, a humidifier is a powerful tool and not a danger. As I wrote in the article, humidifiers must be properly cleaned according to the instructions provided in the manual. This usually means that a humidifier owner must be good friends with bleach! Additionally, different types of humidifiers present varying levels of risk. Consumer Reports once did a test on different types of humidifiers to see how much bacteria each contained. Evaporative humidifiers (like the large one I have) were shown to present the least risk. Cool-mist ultrasonic humidifiers were the most likely to contain and spread bacteria. And don’t forget that there are also humidifiers that filter the germs out, such as the Honeywell that was featured. In my experience, the benefit that humidifiers offer justifies the efforts involved in frequently sanitizing them.

A REASON TO WORRY? I’d like to bring up an issue that causes much unease to parents in our community — and can be easily avoided. Often, kids come home from school, and when their parents ask, “What did you do today?” the answer is something like “It’s a secret,” or “I can’t tell you; my teacher said not to!” And that’s the end of the conversation. Later, the parents might learn that the innocent secret was about a surprise performance, arts and crafts, etc. But in the terrifying world of today, the first sign that a child might be in danger is when they’re told, “Don’t tell your parents.” So why are students hearing this from their educators so often? I truly hope that teachers out there are reading this letter and will begin looking for other ways to up the excitement in their classrooms — without causing needless worrying. A Mother

PA RS H A S BO In Parshas Bo, Hashem brings Makkas Choshech to Mitzrayim. During this plague of darkness, four out of every five of the Bnei Yisroel perished, while only one out of every five survived to ultimately leave Mitzrayim, according to Rashi (on Shemos 13:18). Every Yid in the world today, aside from geirim, descends from that small minority that was zoche to leave Mitzrayim. What was the deciding factor Hashem used in determining which of the Bnei Yisroel would live and which would not? Were the few who survived tzaddikim? We know that the Bnei Yisroel who survived had zechuyos, such as keeping their Yiddishe names and manner of dress. But we also know that they were on the 49th level of tumah, and had they remained in Mitzrayim a moment longer, they would have dropped to the 50th level of tumah and would have been unredeemable. So what was the criterion that determined survival during Makkas Choshech and, subsequently, redemption from Mitzrayim? How was it decided which of the Bnei Yisroel would be zoche to live?

Rashi explains as follows: “Shehayu v’Yisroel b’oso hador resha’im v’lo hayu rotzim l’tzeis u’meisu vishloshes yemei afeilah‌ — Because there were wicked people among Yisroel of that generation who had no desire to leave, and they died during the three days of darkness‌â€? (Rashi on Shemos 10:22). The deciding factor in who would survive and merit to leave Mitzrayim was whether that person desired to be redeemed. R’ Sorotzkin, ztâ€?l, cites the Siach Yitzchok that it was only after Makkas Choshech, and before the tenth makkah, that Hashem gave us our first mitzvah, because it was after Makkas Choshech that Hashem officially chose us as His people. Those who desired Hashem’s redemption survived Makkas Choshech and were solidified as Hashem’s Chosen Nation, and they were officially given their first mitzvah as a nation, that of Rosh Chodesh. The pivotal point was the desire in their hearts. Chazal explain that “b’derech she’adam rotzeh leilach, molichin oso.â€? Hashem leads a person on the path they wish to follow, and those who desired redemption received it. It all comes down to our bechirah, which is our power of choice. In Bamidbar it states that while Bnei Yisroel left Mitzrayim, Hashem destroyed the avodah zarah in Mitzrayim. R’ Yitzchok Radviller, ztâ€?l, explains that the avodah zarah in Mitzrayim only stood as long as they were necessary to give us bechirah. Once we made our choice to follow Hashem, the avodah zarah no longer served a purpose, and they crumbled. We see this principle at play throughout the Torah. When Yaakov Avinu set out from Be’er Sheva for Charan, it says, “He arrived at the place, and he slept there, for the sun had setâ€? (Bereishis 28:11). Chazal explain that Yaakov had passed by Har Hamoriah and only realized it when he reached Charan. He

thought, “Is it possible that I passed by the place in which my ancestors davened, and I did not daven there?” As soon as Yaakov had thoughts of returning, the land contracted (kefitzas haderech), and Yaakov found himself at Har Hamoriah (Sanhedrin 85b). The kefitzas haderech took place upon his having thoughts of return, even before he took any action on those thoughts, such as by beginning to walk back. This shows the power of our desires. Similarly, we see in the Gemara that if a man marries a woman on the condition that he is a tzaddik, the marriage is valid even if he is rasha gamur, chas v’shalom. The Gemara explains, “Perhaps thoughts of teshuvah entered his mind” (Kiddushin 49b). Thoughts of teshuvah alone are enough to validate the marriage without any further action having been taken on those thoughts. And so it was that our desire to be redeemed from Mitzrayim was what led to our redemption. We have a mitzvah of zechiras yetzias Mitzrayim each day and night. The beginning of yetzias Mitzrayim was the desire in our heart to leave Mitzrayim and follow Hashem’s ways. Each and every day, we must desire to leave behind any hindrance to our avodas Hashem, and we must desire to cleave to Hashem. The Rosh explains that even the resha’im Dasan and Aviram were redeemed from Mitzrayim because “they did not despair of hope for redemption.” As long as we keep the fire of yearning in our hearts kindled, Hashem will surely help us. No matter what difficulties we may encounter, and no matter what mistakes we may have made, as long as in our hearts we continue to desire Hashem’s salvation, we will be zoche to it. We must always have hope.

Bais Yaakov of Boro Park Issues Security Reminder After Attempted Luring A luring incident prompted Bais Yaakov of Boro Park to advise the parents of its 2,000 students to review general safety rules with their daughters. According to Boro Park 24, the incident took place on January 24. A twelve-year-old girl was leaving the school building at the corner of 14th Avenue and 46th Street when she was approached by a middle-aged woman who, after ascertaining that she was a Bais Yaakov student, promised to give her candy if she’d come to her car. The girl ignored the woman and continued home. A letter sent to parents by school principal Rabbi Menachem Frank alerted them to the incident and asked parents to use this as a springboard for a discussion with their children. “They are not to talk to strangers, accept anything from them, and certainly never get into or even approach their car,” wrote Rabbi Frank, adding, “Even if they look Jewish and even if they say that they are friends of the family.”

Scammer Who Conned BP Drivers Out of Thousands Arrested by NYPD A Bensonhurst man was arrested by the NYPD on January 21 after scamming more than a dozen victims, collecting hundreds of dollars from each one. Boro Park 24 reported that the man would double-park his car on streets in the area and would stick his hand out to adjust his side view mirror as a car approached, smacking his own mirror loudly with his hand as the car passed and then claiming that he had been injured by the passing car. The man would demand cash from the driver in exchange for not filing a police report and, in some instances, suggest that his victim might have been drinking before the incident occurred. Numerous victims reached out to the NYPD and Boro Park Shomrim, who used the information to identify and arrest the suspect. He is believed to have collected thousands of dollars from his victims. According to Yeshiva World News, scammers have been known to continue targeting victims even after being released on bail so the public is warned to be on the alert. Anyone who may have been scammed or has any

footage of the man is asked to call 911 and Boro Park Shomrim’s 24-hour emergency hotline at 718-871-6666.

Study to Analyze Feasibility of New Subway Line Serving BP and Flatbush A $1.3 million contract has been awarded to an engineering firm to determine whether an existing freight train line that runs through Boro Park and Midwood might one day be converted for passenger use. According to Brooklyn Reporter, on January 22, the MTA announced the launch of the study to analyze the sixteenmile-long Bay Ridge Branch that runs from Bay Ridge to Astoria, Queens. Repurposing the Bay Ridge line for passenger use is an idea that has been discussed for over 20 years, and City Councilman Justin Brannan said that he was happy to see the MTA seriously considering the idea. The Bay Ridge line crosses or travels near nineteen subway lines and the Long Island Railroad and could provide tremendous benefits to thousands of Brooklyn and Queens residents. “Investing in the livability of our city, especially in the other boroughs, where people of diverse incomes live and raise their families, is and should be our most urgent priority,” said Brannan. “Together, we can build a better city, and we can start by reimagining relics like the Bay Ridge Branch.” In addition to eyeing the Bay Ridge Branch as a possible subway line, the study will also consider the line’s potential as a commuter rail, light rail or bus service that could be linked to existing freight rail service.

Alternate Side Violation Fines to Rise to $65 Hoping to keep city streets cleaner, the New York City Department of Sanitation has announced its plan to hike fines for those who violate alternate side of the street parking rules. Starting February 20, fees will increase from $45 to $65 throughout the city. A video issued by the Department of Sanitation showed a sweeping truck traveling down a city street and advised, “Residents are our partners in keeping the city healthy, safe and clean. Do your part and move your car for the broom.”

CHAPTER TWENTY Recap: Bayla Stockhammer begins to doubt the authenticity of the Korman story, and that there really was a couple named Peretz and Tziporah Genendel Korman, but she realizes that there’s too much money at stake to do anything about it now. In Bratislava, Rabbi Walkin, the head of the Jewish orphanage, offers Theodore Heinke his help in finding the missing Jewish boys. Gustav disappears from Janek Cohen’s home. Bratislava 5708/1948

“What does that mean, he disappeared?” Rabbi Walkin stopped abruptly. “When my wife returned from a shopping trip, she found only Edo at home. He told her that Gustav told him that he had to go, and he just went. And he hasn’t come back.” “How many hours have passed since then?” “It’s almost two o’clock, so it must be over four hours by now. We looked for him in every possible place. I even asked Rothstein to sniff around in the municipal hospital, but we’ve turned up nothing.” “Did he leave you a note? A message? Did he say something yesterday or this morning?” “Nothing.” “Do you think he was kidnapped?” The orphanage director pressed a hand to his forehead. “No. I’m afraid that he went back there of his own accord.” “Back? To that other place?” “Yes.” “I was there just now, meeting with

the assistant director, the one who came to look for them here.” “And you think that if I’m right, and Gustav is there, he would have told you about it?” Walkin didn’t answer right away. “I’m trying to replay the conversation with Heinke in my mind. Even though he didn’t make the effort to be particularly nice, I also got the impression that they are groping around in the dark as much as we are. I can’t imagine that the boy returned to them just a short time before…” he said slowly. “It just didn’t seem that way. On the other hand, I can’t be sure. Maybe he’s a good actor or an experienced liar. But why do you think that the boy would run back there?” “He’s been acting very… lost these past few days.” Janek sat down opposite Rabbi Walkin, pushing aside the half-filled ashtray. “We felt that he wasn’t finding himself.” “Like lots of children in his situation.” “Yes,” Janek agreed. “But he once tossed the idea out at us in such a matterof-fact way that it made me bristle. He didn’t understand what we can possibly

offer him if we aren’t his parents and we have no idea how to bring him to them.” “And he was happy in that place?” “Based on his stories, they seem to have treated him nicely.” “My question is,” Walkin thought aloud, “that let’s say you’re right and he went back there. How much time will it take for them to extract from him the identity of the person who smuggled him and Edo out, and where Edo is right now?” “Well, he won’t mention you at all because he’s never met you. Or anyone else from the committee. He knows only Emil, and he’s long gone.” “Right, but if Heinke connects the dots between my visit and the abduction and the child’s return, he won’t need much to prove that our orphanage, along with all the members of the Va’ad Hatzolah, are involved in this story.” Janek nodded. “Indeed, my wife is very afraid. We want to leave.” “Leave?” “Yes.” Janek’s gaze was direct, steady and very open. “I can’t put myself at risk, and I certainly can’t do it to my wife. She’s the only one left from her family, and I am the only one from mine.” “Very understandable,” Walkin said. “And what will we do with Edo?” “If we can’t find a better place for him, we will take him with us.” Janek’s voice did not sound confident at all. “No, there’s no reason for you to take the risk now, if indeed Gustav might be, at this very moment, giving over the relevant information to the management there. The last thing we need is for you to be caught while traveling with Edo. You won’t be able to deny anything.” He was thoughtful for a moment. “Go,” he finally said. “Go with your wife. I suggest that you travel to Senico; Aryeh Lieber lives there, and he’ll be happy to host you. A few Jewish families like us have settled in the city, and you’ll be comfortable there. I’ll speak with Benny, and we’ll continue cautiously searching by ourselves. We’ll update you about any developments. If necessary, we’ll send Edo to you there. He acclimated well with you, didn’t he?” “Baruch Hashem, yes. He really did.”

she owned the building or anything. She also didn’t think they would suspect that she was there to make sure they were taking care of the place properly. It was just natural for her to come by to wish mazel tov to the baalei simcha at a wedding being held there. She left the house and headed for the bus stop, her thoughts on the wedding the entire time. She hoped that the tablecloths being used were long enough and nice enough to conceal the fact that the “tables” were just students’ desks. It was a good thing the school had lots of plastic chairs and that most of them were new; what hashgacha that they had just replaced their stock of chairs at the end of last year! She just hoped that someone had arranged a better chair for the kallah. While it was true that with a beautiful chair cover even a plastic chair could look quite elegant, it still wasn’t regal enough for a kallah. Too bad she hadn’t asked the Stockhammers more details about what they were planning. Perhaps she could have helped out more… “Shaina?” Nechama Kagan tapped her cousin, who was still a few minutes away from the hall, on the shoulder. “So good to see you! Are you on the way to the wedding?” “Yes. I guess you are, too?” “Yup. I’m so glad I met you. I wanted to apologize for having worried you for no reason, apparently. If I understood correctly, that story about the chasan being sick is not at all true. Not that I’m sure what the real story is, but—” “They said they got a special grant, contingent upon the fact that they would get married today.” Shaina stuck to the story that Mrs. Stockhammer had told her on the phone. If that’s what she had been told, as far as she was concerned, that was the truth. She wasn’t going to nose around to try to find other versions of the story, juicy as they might be. “It’s possible that it’s really true. From what I understand, they bought the couple a huge apartment in the center of Bnei Brak.” “Could be.” Shaina remained unmoved. “I didn’t ask a lot of questions. I just apologized that the walls of the gym haven’t been painted for more than two years, and that it’s quite old. I hope it’s not bothering them too much now.” “Anyone who gets a hall for free says thank you and doesn’t look at the peeling walls,” Nechama said. “Though it’s hard for me to imagine Bayla, the mechuteniste, marrying off her son in a hall with peeling walls… But I guess sometimes you have no choice in matters like these...” “Oh, look. I see they posted signs indicating the

Shaina Rosen, the principal of the Zichron Elchanan school, vacillated about whether to go to the wedding or not. In the end she decided to go. She didn’t think that her presence there would embarrass the mechutenistas; after all, although she’d given them permission to use the school gym, it wasn’t like

46 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / January 29, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

men’s and women’s entrances.” Shaina Rosen knew her school yard quite well. It had an odor that changed from time to time. During the stormy winter days, it smelled of water, mud and wet leaves. At the peak of the hot weather, there was the smell of dryness and heat, almost a scorching smell. At the beginning of the year, there was a scent — and Shaina was positive that it was something real, not imagined — of crisp new clothes and briefcases and shoes. But this smell of spicy fried chicken and steamed vegetables was not something that she ever remembered smelling there. These mouthwatering smells, together with the band’s music and the tinkle of silverware emerging from the windows, as well as the crowd of women standing in the courtyard, really generated the happy image of a regular wedding hall. “Doesn’t look like your familiar school, does it?” How was it that Nechama was always able to put her thoughts into words? That was something that had always drawn them to one another in the past. And it was this same something that also caused their relationship to constantly hit ruts. “It really looks like a simcha hall,” Shaina agreed. “I’m happy for them. I was afraid it would look more like a school function. I’m glad that the guests’ first impression is that of a regular simcha.” Nechama strode toward the right side of the school building, with Shaina behind her. Shaina didn’t glance at her own locked office or at the darkened classrooms. She didn’t recognize any of the women who passed her on the stairs, but some of them apparently recognized her and nodded in greeting. The drumbeats of the band grew stronger, and to her unprofessional ear, the music sounded very professional. She hoped that at least the band would be able to compensate for the less-than-pretty décor of the old gym. And that the photographer would skillfully choose elegant backdrops for the pictures. One of the windows in the room had a pretty decent curtain, but it was also rather old… Shaina was suddenly very embarrassed to enter the “hall,” like a mother who is ashamed to walk into the classroom on PTA night to speak to her rambunctious daughter’s teacher. “Hello, Mrs. Rosen,” a woman greeted her. “And mazel tov!” “Simchos by all!” Shaina replied. “Did I arrive in the middle of the meal?” “No, they finished the main course a few minutes ago.”

No more excuses, she told herself. Just go in and see your gym in all its shabby shame. Against the backdrop of the simcha inside, the peeling walls and plastic chairs probably stand out even more, but at least you can console yourself with the fact that because of this hall — and to your credit! — the chasan and kallah are receiving some financial support… She entered, automatically turning her head to the right of the door, where the inside knob constantly slammed into the wall, creating a large and ugly hole. From there, she knew, there was a long strip of peeling paint that reached all the way to where the old Chanukah chagigah signs from the past few years still hung. But the hole wasn’t there, and beyond it, the colorful signs had also disappeared. In their place was fabric in hues of blue and silver, draped from the ceiling along the length of all the walls. It was topped with a regal-looking blue valance that was at least ten feet high. Shaina raised her gaze — yes, someone had managed to go all the way to the ceiling in order to cover the entire wall in this fabric! She lowered her eyes again. The hall was divided with a latticed wooden mechitzah, but she imagined that the other side of the hall was a mirror image of this one: Dark carpets covered the scratched parquet floors, and “her” plastic chairs were encased in glittery blue and silver chair covers. The oval tables — which were certainly not hers — were covered in silver linen tablecloths, and rising from the center of each one was a massive candelabra, covered with blue flower balls with dozens of little candles twinkling inside elegant glass cups. Now that the meal was over, the tables were full of dirty place settings, but even now, Shaina could see that all the tableware was top quality. Along the wall that faced the door was a threetiered bar, but she could not see it well from where she was standing because a mass of women stood between them. Suddenly, out of nowhere, her cousin Nechama Kagan appeared at her side. “It’s amazing what they did here!” she said. “It’s like a real banquet hall! I’m telling you, this place is no less gorgeous than the fanciest halls that I know of! Come, Shaina, let me introduce you to Bayla Stockhammer, so you can see firsthand the person you did this chesed for.” “Chesed…” Shaina murmured, but her sotto voce remark was drowned out by the thudding drums.

Against the backdrop of the simcha inside, the peeling walls and plastic chairs probably stand out even more...

Bloomberg Makes a Play for Jewish Votes in Florida THE PULSE: Former New York City mayor and current candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination Michael Bloomberg addressed a Jewish audience in Aventura, Florida, on Sunday afternoon. Noting that it was the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, Bloomberg addressed concerns of growing anti-Semitism. He mentioned that his father’s family was wiped out by the Nazis. Bloomberg also quoted from Sefer Vayikra and referred to it by its Hebrew name. He appealed to the crowd to do their

50 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / January 29, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

civic duty and not be guilty of “lo tamod al dam rei’echa,” sitting idly by while one’s brother’s blood is spilled. Bloomberg emphasized his strong support for Israel. He pointed out that he opposed the Obama administration’s nuclear deal but was also critical of how President Trump exited the agreement, which he believes will only increase the chances that Iran will continue on a path toward a nuclear bomb. Bloomberg also took a swipe at Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders when he said that “I know I’m not the only Jewish candidate running for president. But I am the only one who doesn’t want to turn America into a kibbutz.” He used the event to kick off “Unity for Mike,” which is aimed at attracting Jewish voters to his campaign. THE IMPACT: Bloomberg is charting an unconven-

tional course for his campaign. He is skipping the ear-

ly state primaries and caucuses. He is hoping to make a play for the nomination by winning Super Tuesday contests and other battleground states. Winning Florida is critical for his chances of success. Bloomberg is polling at 8% nationally, which places him fourth behind Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

Reports: Bolton Alleges Firsthand Knowledge That the President Used Ukraine Aid as Pressure for Investigating Biden and Democrats THE PULSE: The New York Times obtained advance

excerpts of former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s upcoming book. According to reports, Bolton wrote that President Trump told him directly that “he wanted to continue freezing $391 million in security assistance to Ukraine until officials there helped with investigations into Democrats including the Bidens.” THE IMPACT: Bolton’s account undercuts a key Re-

publican talking point that there is no direct evidence that links the president to the quid pro quo of withholding Ukrainian military aid. The public release of his account will likely increase pressure on Republican senators to call witnesses to testify at the Senate trial. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer upped the ante by saying that “John Bolton has the evidence. It’s up to four Senate Republicans to ensure that John Bolton, Mick Mulvaney and the others with direct knowledge of President Trump’s actions testify in the Senate trial.”

Republican Senator Says Impeachment Has Taught President Trump a Lesson THE PULSE: Republican Senator Mike Braun (R-IN)

said that President Trump was “taken to the carpet”

by the impeachment process and will be “instructed by what has occurred.” Braun made it clear that he did not think that the president committed an impeachable offense. However, he stated that he believed that the impeachment process will still be instructive because “if you’re pushing the envelope or doing things that may not feel right, let alone be right, you’d better be careful.” THE IMPACT: The sentiment of Senator Braun may not accurately reflect the feelings of the president. The president will probably feel emboldened by an acquittal in the Senate and will not necessarily feel bound by any sense of caution. Senator Braun is likely expressing his sentiment and those of like-minded senators who are planning to vote to acquit the president but are nevertheless conflicted by what type of message they will be sending the president and future administrations.

Dershowitz Argues That Abuse of Power Is Not an Impeachable Offense THE PULSE: During the first three days of the Senate impeachment trial, House managers laid out a detailed account of the president’s actions regarding Ukraine. They laid out their case based on their belief that the president abused his power and that he obstructed Congress by refusing to turn over documents requested by Congress and by refusing to allow administration officials to testify at the Congressional impeachment hearings. The president’s defense team chose not to engage in countering the factual basis of the House manager’s claims; rather, they decided to argue that the alleged infractions did not reach the level of impeachable offenses and did not warrant the removal of a president from office. Alan Dershowitz, one of the lead lawyers defending the president, claimed that even if the president abused his power, it is not an impeachable offense as it is not a criminal act. THE IMPACT: President Trump’s defense team is

making the most straightforward argument for Republican senators to acquit the president. Their strategy appears to be working as Republican senatorial support for Trump has held steadfast despite the constant drip of additional negative information. However, failure to directly refute the concerns that have been raised regarding the president’s actions may not resonate well with the electorate. A winning strategy for the impeachment trial may not necessarily result in a political win for the president.

COOKIE STICKS

By: Leah Stern Photo credit: C. Tarkieltaub

I enjoy baking cookie sticks. They are simple to make, yield a large quantity, and can be decorated for special occasions. Did I mention that they are irresistibly delicious and freeze well? They also make great fillers for hostess packages, as they can be kept at room temperature for a couple of days. All these cookie sticks were baked in disposable cookie sheets, which I doubled to create a sturdier pan. For easier everyday snacking, these can be cut into small bars.

I was young, idealistic and eagerto-please when my husband expressed his intense desire to build a Torah-true home, one with its doors open to guests.

H

e’d just returned to the States after spending the few years before our marriage learning in Eretz Yisroel, and there, he’d been an appreciative recipient of gracious hospitality. He was in awe of his hosts, who despite being challenged with dire financial situations and cramped living quarters, opened their homes to him and other bachurim and nourished them, often with limited food, but always with an abundance of genuine ahavas Yisroel. Inspired, his appetite was whet, and he, too, strived for a life of increased kedusha and chesed. I nodded with sincerity. Little did I know what I was committing myself to with those few innocent head movements. Little did I know how it would impact the structure of our home and how it would change the landscape of the cozy abode that I aspired to build. My home would nurture more than just family; it would be a place where privacy is not a given. This project brought along its challenges, but the tradeoff is priceless. Hachnasas orchim was no stranger to my past. My father would sometimes walk in on Shabbos or yom tov accompanied by eccentric and downtrodden individuals, and he’d serve them much more than a hearty meal. He tended to them with respect and attentiveness and

would honor them to sing a niggun or share a dvar Torah — and woe to those of us who dared snicker in their presence. Both my maternal and paternal grandparents welcomed strangers into their homes frequently, and on yom tov we would often take shifts to help my grandmother, who lived upstairs, serve the myriads of people crowded around their modest dining room table. Even then, as youngsters, we were awed by the divine brachos that flowed in my grandmother’s pots, always accommodating the assembled with more food that their size would portray. Apartments were scarce in Brooklyn at the time of my marriage, and we were delighted to find a charming, newly renovated

flat that was both affordable and located in a great neighborhood. But my husband could not come to terms with the fact that he would not have an extra bedroom in his home in which to put up guests. So we found ourselves, a starryeyed couple during sheva brachos, in a furniture store, where we ordered a simple high-riser to adorn our meticulously furnished dining room. My husband then graciously treated me to an expensive set of custom bedspreads “to make it look like a couch.” (A few years ago we finally disposed of those beds. It was a pretty emotional parting. Who knows how many zechusim lay in those battered mattresses?) It didn’t take long for me to learn to increase the amount of food in

my husband’s lunch box, despite his being a small eater. The regards I got confirmed my suspicions that there was always someone hungrier than he was with whom he would share his repast. It was when I was newly married and preparing supper for two that my husband came home from Maariv late one evening with energized excitement, accompanied by three Israeli men who had just arrived from the airport —

It was then that I was served my first hands-on lesson in hachnasas orchim: Hungry people aren’t very particular, and this mitzvah isn’t about portraying an image of living up to my balabatishe standards. for supper. I opened my eyes wide and tried to keep my mouth tightly shut. What was he planning to serve those guests, anyway? But my husband wasn’t fazed at

The owner of a restaurant asked Rabbeinu Yoel of Satmar if he was obligated to keep his store open to feed customers walking in at closing time. The Rebbe told him that when the scenario arises, he should offer the person two readily available foods, and if the customer is happy with the menu offered, then the shop owner would be obligated to feed him, because that proves that the customer must truly be in need of a meal. But if the customer wants only specific foods, then the owner would be under no obligation to serve him. This was my first hachnasas orchim lesson.

all. He pulled out a pitiful assortment of single-portion tuna salad, vegetables and yogurts, toasted a few slices of bread, and proceeded to fry some eggs. It was then that I was served my first hands-on lesson in hachnasas orchim: Hungry people aren’t very particular, and this mitzvah isn’t about portraying an image of living up to my balabatishe standards. It is exclusively about filling the needs of others: to satiate them and make them feel comfortable and wanted. Our in-house guest appearance started out slowly and infrequently, but was on a steady incline. By now we can sometimes have as many as 30 additional participants around our Shabbos table, and we have to shuffle tables and chairs during Shabbos to seat them all.

Both strangers and acquaintances often stop me to inquire how we manage to pull off this guest business. “How can you bring people into your home at all hours without prior notice?” they ask. I would love to be able to boast about my housekeeping skills and pride myself with the fact that mine is a home that’s always in tip-top shape. But in reality, our family has, baruch Hashem, been blessed with an active brood of delicious, lebedige kinderlach who spill toys and juice and manage to turn my entire house into one big play zone, leaving much clutter and mess in their wake. They, like all children, need clean clothes, nourishing food and an attentive mommy. More often than not, even with hired cleaning help, there is little time left to shine and polish. There are times when even to collect the day’s clutter isn’t within my capacity. I admit that it is often difficult to prepare a meal and a clean bed for a total stranger when the basics in my home have not yet been tended to. I try to muster the strength despite my emotional and phys-

But being that I am human as anyone else, my attitude often fails and I get stuck in negative thoughts: I’ll complain and fervently wish that I had not been put to test at such a vulnerable moment. But, baruch Hashem, although these challenges do come up, I don’t let them incapacitate me to the point of hindering our chesed activities. There is a definite line in hosting obligations. There’s a wide gap between the gracious hosting of family and friends, people who have been blessed with the security of a warm home, food and the wherewithal to hold their own fort, who are just in the mood for a reprieve — and those who are unfortunately dependent on others, even if temporarily, for a meal or a bed. There is surely a special beauty in accommodating close ones in one’s home. I, for one, enjoy this kind of hosting immensely. It treats me to social satisfaction and is way more pleasurable than serving and putting up random men whom my husband and boys entertain. But unless it’s your parents or in-laws who wish to be hosted, there is no obligation for you to open your home to provide a getaway for family and friends. When one is not in a position to handle the extra stress, declining to invite may just be the right thing. On the contrary, when a hungry person is in need

of a meal, it is a Torah obligation to help, and one should even overextend oneself to do so. That said, if one is not up to catering to guests at the time, it’s okay to find them different accommodations. Do it respectfully, and if applicable, offer an explanation. When our business faltered and our financial situation was really tough, we relied on Hashem to sponsor our activities. Through His infinite chesed and dedicated messengers, we always managed to swing our hefty food bills, baruch Hashem. The nature of our type of guesting is that although we have regulars — as well as random strangers — almost weekly, the heavy traffic when we expect dozens of orchim is usually seasonal. During those hectic times, my house resembles a mismanaged hotel. I happily let go of the extra flair. We skip fancy chargers, and even forgo china and crystals, to focus on the most important stuff: the people, food and mood. Although we do encourage people to call us in advance, we often have many unaccounted-for individuals popping in. Preparing meals without even an estimated participant list can be puzzling, but over the years, experience has taught me that the Shabbos menu is stretchable. When an influx of unexpected guests arrive and food is tight, we will start the meal with

I’ll let the men sing a few lebedige zemiros and only then serve the fish, after everyone’s hunger has been tamed. Fish portions in our home get prepared at times with rachamim and at times with “din,” the latter which my kids jokingly refer to as “salami slices.” My large pot of soup

usually feeds all, and the main dish gets served French-style with a variety of kugels so that no one gets hungry even with smaller meat portions. Many of our guests are chashuve bnei Torah from Eretz Yisoreol who are facing unbearable difficulties. They are forced to leave the comfort of their homes and forgo their tight learning schedule to figure out a way to support their families. It’s painful to watch how difficult and terribly degrading it is for them to be dependent on the mercy of their kindhearted brethren while they endure their personal galus. We are happy to give them a place to call home and an opportunity to enjoy Shabbos in a heimishe atmosphere with homemade food and lots of singing. We offer a haven where they can forget about their woes and truly rest. Their heartfelt brachos accompany our family, and we’ve merited lots of siyata d’Shmaya that we attribute to this mitzvah. Once, a family member was

faced with a medical crisis, and we were anxiously waiting for the diagnosis. We were expecting a lot of company at the time and were contemplating whether to take a reprieve and cancel all guests until the situation would settle. Finally, we decided to put up the guests despite the difficulties it entailed as a zechus for a yeshuah. From the hospital, we made phone calls and accepted all offers for help with the cooking, and a family member moved in to coordinate Shabbos. Ultimately, we merited a yeshuah way beyond our expectations — the zechus definitely stood us in good stead. Another time, I found myself in a fearful situation that caused us a lot of anxiety. When I went to take care of the issue, I encountered a poor suffering

• Don’t strive to be a perfect hostess. It’s difficult for guests to relax in an environment where perfection is expected.

Starting our infant on the Thrive Biotica restored serenity in our house. He is so much calmer and happier.

• Most guests will arrive hungry. Try to have drinks and a light snack handy. • Guests feel uncomfortable to bother their hosts with requests. Make sure their room temperature is comfortable, prepare extra pillows, negel vasser gear, toothbrushes, shoe polish, etc., for their convenience. • Be welcoming. Don’t make your guests feel like they’re a burden on you. • Provide a listening ear, but never probe for information. Respect your guests’ privacy. • Don’t expect your kids to act like angels. While it’s uncomfortable to settle a fight or deal with a full-blown tantrum with strangers around, remember that these occurrences portray your family as regular and healthy and may just make your guests feel at home. • If a guest offers to help with serving or cleanup, allow them to assist you. It will make them feel useful and involved.

The Biotica Infant worked magic on my daughter’s colic and reflux symptoms and regulated her bowel movements as well.

When my baby started Biotica Infant her thrush disappeared after a week.

soul we knew well right there in the office. It was someone we tended to regularly, not as a guest, but with other help he needed. He always managed to call at the most hectic times when we had to stretch in all directions to take care of his needs. As soon as I saw him, my fears dissipated. I took it as a sign that this zechus was accompanying me through this challenge, and that everything would turn out okay. It did. People always want to know how all this hosting affects our children, the dearest people in our lives. I try not to throw the brunt of the work onto them, but despite my efforts, in a project of such magnitude, there will usually be spillover. Baruch Hashem, they usually pick up on the need responsibly. My offspring may be missing out on the coziness of only-family Shabbosos (it does happen sometimes!) and of being the sole object of their parents’ attention. They do gain other benefits, though. Over the years

they have adopted loving uncles, been captivated by amazing stories, and entertained by many an interesting fellow. When my boys attend beis midrash in Eretz Yisroel, they get treated like VIPs. They are warmly welcomed and often invited by guests of ours who are thrilled to reciprocate. Additionally, our open-door policy has turned our children into perceptive, selfless and caring individuals. These positive traits take them far as they move on in life. Sometimes we do hit tough situations, or host difficult and bitter individuals whose behavior can be especially hard for my children. At those times, I gently remind them that the zechus and the everlasting benefits are theirs to keep. And I daven that in the merit of sharing the love and warmth of our home with total strangers, may they always be zoche to have their own cozy nest and never be in a position to rely upon the mercy of others.

A Note to Family and Friends Not everyone is in a position to host regularly. If you are acquainted with someone who is, keep the following in mind: • Don’t assume that you can send guests without asking if they are available to host. • Don’t give an unstable person their number or address without permission. • Don’t dump your leftover challah or food on their stoop. • Never make the mitzvah more difficult with comments such as: • “I hope you screen you guests very carefully, because such and such has happened…” • “Shabbos is meant for family time and to focus on the kids.” • “Who says it’s even a mitzvah?” • If you have the means to help with something, offer to send cake, kugels or cut-up fruits. • If the host is struggling financially, offer to help with money and have a zechus in this great mitzvah.

Your game plan for prepping under panic

“My mother hinted that I should take some lessons from you about how to be a balabusta… She said everything is so very neat in your house, that everything has its place…” At that, I burst out laughing. My cousin had called me after I hosted her parents for one night, enabling them to attend the bris she was making in the morning without their having to travel from out of town in the early a.m. hours. “Don’t worry,” I assured her. “I had a few hours to clean up. My home is not usually so perfect. In fact, let’s count the things on my kitchen island at this very moment…” By the time we got to 15 items, I stopped, point proven. It’s a fact: Homes that are lived in have things about. Many, many things. And while advance notice of arriving guests gives us a chance to pretend we’re great balabustas, there’s nothing quite like unannounced or last-minute guests to send a shiver up the spine of the average housewife, whipping her into a cleaning frenzy. I mean, really, how do you preserve dignity on short notice? Here are some tips culled from homemakers like you and I, who also panic when guests haven’t booked a week or so in advance... Gather and Hide

Unless they’ll be sleeping over, guests usually visit three areas of the house: the dining and/or living room, the kitchen and the main bathroom. Those are your areas of focus.

Go through the main hosting areas, scoop up anything that’s out of place, and dump it into the basket. Then hide the basket in one of the no-go zones. You’ll deal with the mess later. (I hope!)

Run around the house and close doors to any areas that are not presentable. A closed door not only signals to guests that a room is a no-go zone, it also blocks any mess from view.

There are three ways to do this, short of actually pulling out the mixer: • Keep in your freezer those instant cookies that you only have to throw in your oven and then plate when ready. Best option. • When that option fails, search your pantry or freezer for anything baked that you can reheat. Even throwing a bread roll into the microwave for 30 seconds can add a homey element to the area. • Put a pan of cinnamon and water into the oven at 350°. The smell will freshen up the place. Adding a drop of vanilla sugar will add an additional element of fresh. But sorry, no quick foods to offer your guests.

Spray and Sprint Run around the rooms and spray whatever cleaning solution you use on any dirty or dusty surfaces, mirrors included. Don’t wipe right away, letting the product soften up any spills or sticky substances. When you reach the end of your spray route, go back to the beginning and wipe up; you’ll expend much less effort this way.

Freshen the Bathroom Don’t have time to scrub the toilet? Put in a drop of bleach and/or good-smelling cleaner to fake a freshly scrubbed john. Wipe off any noticeable gunk with a disinfecting wipe — or even a tissue, in a pinch. Flush and move on. Two minutes, tops.

As told to: Rachel Mosbacher

80 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

I hate the kitchen. Elaborate cookbooks with their eye-candy recipes notwithstanding, the easiest, quickest and laziest route is the one I tend to take. Every now and then, after being forced to endure a prolonged spell in the kitchen, I go on strike. These strikes sometimes coincide with Shabbos. My story begins on a Shabbos morning of one such strike. My husband was at shul, and I was trying to decide whether to go meet him or clean up the artfully dispersed toy clutter that was decorating my apartment. Cleaning up the apartment might have seemed like the

We’ve got challah, I mused, and the overnight chicken soup and egg salad will just have to be minuscule in portion. Hopefully I’ll have enough vegetables to concoct some sort of salad, and for dessert, I can always cut up some fruit. When we got to our apartment, I casually shoved the toys blocking our paths to one side and graciously showed our guests into the living room. With no nerves to make any more polite conversation, I made a beeline for the kitchen and proceeded to tackle my “yesh me’ayin” assignment. Thankfully, my children did not so much as hint to the lack of food. Perhaps they were even more accustomed to such seudos than I’d thought. I made nothing of the tiny quantities served, though during the course of the meal, I did mention my aversion to cooking and inability to produce anything remotely gourmet. The meal took much longer than expected. Our guests (whose names turned out to be Harry and Linda) really seemed to enjoy our company and were very engaging. Despite not being frum, they had an unbelievable scope of knowledge about Yiddishkeit and were extremely proud of their heritage. I found their unapologetic attitude so inspiring, it made me wonder if we would be able to hold our heads as high as theirs in an unwelcoming society. Either way, I was relieved when they stayed on long after the meal, clearly enjoying themselves. I just hoped they had some kind of satisfying snacks awaiting them in their hotel room; they were surely starving. After making a firm resolve not to have a repeat performance of this embarrassing event, I put the matter out of my mind. Until a few days later, when a package turned up unexpectedly in our mailbox. As I opened the box, a note flew out.

I just hoped they had some kind of satisfying snacks awaiting them in their hotel room; they were surely starving. more sensible option, but I opted for getting out for some fresh air that would allow me to feel like a mentch. In my opinion, that was way more productive than a tidy house that would shortly erupt back into its previous state. Approaching the shul yard, I saw my husband coming toward me, grinning broadly. “Guess what?” he said. “We’ve got guests!” Standing a polite distance away were a keen-looking, seemingly unaffiliated middle-aged couple. They were foreign, here for business. Somehow, it had not entered their minds to make arrangements for the Shabbos meals, though they did take enough pride in their heritage to make it a point to attend shul. They seemed so relieved to have received a spontaneous invitation. Little did they know what was (or to be more precise, wasn’t) lying in store for them. “How wonderful!” I said cheerfully, hoping my face was belying my churning insides. As we walked home from shul, I desperately tried to make small talk while simultaneously performing the mental gymnastics: How was I going to stretch my humble nothing to feed another two mouths?

With thanks for your gracious hospitality. – Harry and Linda

2. Instructions:

Water is the most important item in your package. Some hosts even consider putting two bottles into each package. With so many shapes and sizes of water bottles available, you have options aplenty. If you’re using a bag for your hostess packages, any size water should generally fit. If you’re using a box, take the measurements and buy accordingly. HERE’ S A L IS T OF SOME P OPUL A R WATER OPTIONS AND THEIR SIZES.

SOLE (330 ml): 9 by 2.25 inches VOSS (330 ml): 7 by 2 inches

1.

Before starting your project, prepare a list of foods and essentials you want to include in each package. This will help you gauge what size bag or box to buy. Put yourself into your guests’ shoes, and think about what you’d appreciate if you were away from home. Tantalizing chocolates and sweets? Or maybe some baked goods to accompany your morning coffee? Handy essentials go a long way. Rain bonnets, mini Advil packets and small bottles of mouthwash can make a world of a difference to those who left them back home.

AQUA CARPATICA (500 ml): 8.5 by 2 inches

3.

Putting chocolates and nuts into little boxes fills your package neatly and appetizingly. You can use tuck-top boxes, which come in many colors and sizes. The most popular ones measure 2x2x2” or 3x3x2”. (They are available at Papermart, Nashville Wraps and on Amazon.) Baked goods can be placed either in a clear PVC box or in a clear cellophane bag. Mezonos treats are so appreciated, as is always relayed to mechutanim! Fill up the empty space by putting essentials into little velvet or satin pouches.

Personalize water bottles with a message, your logo, or a water wrap. A wrap for this bottle would measure3.95 by 9 inches.

Artisanal popcorn is trending now and enhances any package.

One container of after-dinner mints fills approximately four MiniWare cubes.

A ribbon in a coordinating color brings it all together. Close it up with glue dots for the neatest job.

88 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / January 29, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

Here we used an 8x8x4 lucite box.

Lucite Luxury

Add a special message or your monogram on a label, and affix it to the matchbox

Customize your package to your guests’ needs. Think out of the box! You can substitute tea lights with a pouch of mouthwash or Advil. You also might like to put candles into one of the lucite cubes instead of food.

MiniWare 2x2x2” lucite cubes can be found in most supermarkets and party good stores.

Use glue spray to glue labels onto the MiniWare cubes.

January 29, 2020 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 89 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

Make it your own! A bow brings any bag up a level! You can use a satin grosgrain or velvet ribbon for a beautiful effect.

Personalize a label with a monogram or the names of the chasan and kallah, and affix it to the back of the bag.

The sky’s the limit. No measurements when you’re using a bag, just fill it neatly for a polished look.

This package is simple, neat, affordable and will be so appreciated!

Add a magazine to make your package truly unforgettable! Some papers offer personalizing the cover of their magazine.

See these biscotti recipes in this week’s food section.

Use any color 2x2x2” cubes. Here we used MiniWare cubes.

Beauty in a Bag

ITINERARY For guests, there’s nothing as helpful as knowing when and where the functions will be taking place. Having an itinerary clearly printed is extremely valuable. Align the timing of events to make it easy to read. This is a great place to add some words of thanks and appreciation to your guests for making the effort to join in your simcha! Out-of-town guests find it especially helpful to have a map of the area they’re staying, marked with the locations of where the events will be taking place.

Wrap the tea lights, tray and matches in a cellophane bag.

Life at a Glance MENACHEM, age 24: juggles three jobs LEAH, age 23: runs her own business sewing custom gowns and dresses ARON, age 3.5 MIRIAM, 18 months Both kids are in daycare. In the past year, Leah has had to cut down on work because Miriam has been sick a lot. Real numbers and real facts. Identifying details have been changed to protect privacy.

Recap: Menachem and Leah create a monthly budget and feel vastly relieved. Menachem resolves to look for a better-paying job.

Menachem: I feel that my vision so far wasn’t even to get out of debt, but rather to feel like we’re not drowning anymore. I’m finally starting to feel like we’re swimming, instead of desperately splashing around treading water. We have a plan and we’re working hard; Hashem will help things fall into place. And now I feel ready to dream bigger, to set goals of how we’ll get out of debt and when we’ll finally be completely in the clear and out of the water. I want to create a calendar with goals and a schedule. But first, Leah and I have a discussion about why we want to get out of debt and what money means to us. We have a lot of dreams: We want to get out of debt so we can have financial freedom, save up to buy a house, and have enough for fun stuff — like vacations and trips with the kids to visit my parents in Europe. We want to be able to have enough put away so that we can retire early and enjoy our family. My wife says her dreams are establishing a business she can work from anywhere, and traveling four times a year. How’s that for fun? She also wants to have flexible hours so that we can have family time together on Sundays. But for now she just wants enough to go to the grocery every week... I’m starting to think it’s very doable! Our coach says the next step is a $1,000 emergency fund. We’re aiming to fill it up within the first two months. He also reads through our wish list and smiles. He says dreaming is good because it keeps us motivated. It’s an uphill climb, but you get the strength to keep going when you think of the view from the top.

Coach’s Take

might as well dream big! I love what Menachem and Leah are doing!

• Emergencies happen, and money usually helps. Think about this: Around 66% of Americans — that’s two-thirds! — cannot cover a $1,000 emergency without going into debt. When you have the money to replace a flat tire or to cover your son’s stitches, emergencies become mere inconveniences, as opposed to catastrophes. Having an emergency fund will prevent you from making rash decisions that turn a bad situation worse.

• Another reason to have a wish list: Your budget should always balance out to zero — this way you know exactly where every dollar is going. What happens if you have a business like Leah’s, where your take-home pay varies from month to month? Put the amount that you can definitely count on each month into your regular budget. Then plan a wish list for the extras, listed in order of your priorities.

• Write up a wish list. This is good because it keeps you focused on positive thoughts for the future. The Baal HaTanya says, “Tracht gut vet zein gut.” The thoughts you put out into the world become your reality. This is known all over the world as the Law of Attraction, and it has been proven in science with quantum mechanics. Dreaming brings a smile back to your face and puts the spark back into life. And if you’re dreaming, you

• See Menachem and Leah’s wish list as an example. The first $1,000 income more than their budget will finance their emergency fund. The next $359 will pay off their first credit card (the one that’s on top of their debt list). If they get more than that paid for this month, they want to put aside money to take the kids for a longoverdue visit to Menachem’s parents in Europe… and so on.

How Do You Host? 4. WHAT KIND OF FOOD AND AMENITIES DO YOU LEAVE OUT FOR GUESTS?

1. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT DROP-IN GUESTS? I have a pristine guest room all ready for whoever needs a place to stay. As long as the guest is happy to come, I’m happy to have them — but it might mean I’ll be changing linen while they’re standing in the hallway! Last-minute guests are a nightmare!

2. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE IN REGARD TO GUESTS HELPING OUT? I like to give my guests the royal treatment; they aren’t allowed to lift a finger! Isn’t it more comfortable when the guests feel at home? I let them help me serve meals and clean up.

Bottled water and cups Water and light snacks A whole welcome package including water, snacks, magazines, etc. A welcome package and various toiletries, in case they forgot something at home I tell my guests that “my house is your house” and give them full access to everything.

5. IF YOUR GUESTS WOULD LIKE TO GIFT YOU, WHAT DO YOU PREFER MOST? A fruit or chocolate platter or other nice dessert Flowers Wine A toy for the kids A serving dish or something else pretty for the home

3. WHAT DO YOU PREFER GUESTS DO WITH THEIR LINEN?

A handwritten note of appreciation

Make the beds nicely and go on their merry way. I’ll wash the linen before the next guests arrive.

6. WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WISH YOUR GUESTS WOULD KNOW?

Strip the linen and leave it on the beds; it makes my life so much easier!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

However they leave the room is fine, as long as they were comfortable being here!

On Being the Guest 1. DO YOU FIND BEING A GUEST STRESSFUL?

3. DO YOU ALWAYS BRING A GIFT WHEN YOU ARE HOSTED?

No. I make myself right at home and enjoy myself.

Of course! I really appreciate the work a host puts into preparing for our arrival.

It’s stressful to pack and repack, but while I’m a guest, I really enjoy myself.

If it’s family I’m staying with, and I stay there often, I’ll buy a bigger gift after coming a few times rather than a small gift each time.

Yes. Making sure my kids don’t act too wild and break something or bother anyone keeps me constantly on edge.

I’m deeply appreciative, but I can’t always bring a gift.

I’m only uncomfortable if I have to share a bathroom with the family.

Yikes! I didn’t realize gifts were expected! 2. DO YOU MIND HELPING OUT YOUR HOST? Not at all! After they worked so hard to prepare for me, I’m more than happy to lend a hand when possible!

4. WHICH TWO ITEMS DO YOU APPRECIATE THE MOST WHEN YOU’RE A GUEST? A well-stocked bathroom A Shabbos lamp

I wish I were able to help more, but I feel uncomfortable doing so in someone else’s house.

Seforim A clock

I’m always busy watching my kids! How can I possibly help out?

Spare hangers A full-length mirror

I don’t think it’s fair that I’m expected to help out after all the stress of packing and coming!

A sheitel head Negel vasser

Did you know? The staff size at any given hotel largely depends on the hotel’s rating. In a 3-star hotel, you can expect eight staff members for every ten rooms. A 4-star hotel would typically have a ratio of twelve staff members for every ten rooms. A 5-star hotel features the most robust staffing for the ultimate luxury experience, at an average of twenty staff members for every ten rooms. But be warned — next time you enjoy a 5-star retreat, don’t expect to find two housekeepers waiting on you! Hotel Ratings Around the World In many countries, including Belgium, Italy and Spain, hotel ratings are assigned by government agencies and may be dictated by law. However, while some countries, such as South Africa, have strict rating regulations in place, a worldwide hotel-ranking system has yet to be established. This means that rating systems are largely incohesive across the globe. So although a four- or five-star classification is used to rank hotels in most parts of the world, the exact differentiation between levels varies greatly from place to place. A four-star system generally classifies hotels as follows:

A five-star system generally classifies hotels as follows:

Deluxe/luxury

Luxury

First class/superior

First class

Tourist class/standard

Comfort

Budget class/economy

Standard Tourist

In Europe, the mark “Superior” is often added to the above classifications, indicating extras beyond the hotel tier’s minimum standard.

HOTEL STAFF CAN GENERALLY BE BROKEN DOWN INTO FOUR CATEGORIES:

MANAGEMENT

FOOD OPERATIONS

A successful hotel requires numerous management roles, including a HOTEL MANAGER who is responsible for the hotel’s overall operations, a DIRECTOR OF SALES who oversees group reservations and the like, and a SHIFT LEADER who manages on-duty staff. If the hotel includes a banquet hall, conference rooms, or other such amenities, then you can expect to find an EVENT PLANNER or WEDDING COORDINATOR on staff as well.

Since many hotels feature restaurants or an in-room meal service, a full kitchen staff can often be found on premises. This typically includes a/an: who is responsible for the menu and daily kitchen operations

EXECUTIVE CHEF,

WAITRESS,

who serves the food to the consumers

MAITRE D’, who greets and seats customers at the hotel restaurant

who is in charge of the wine beverages throughout the hotel

SOMMELIER,

BACK-END

FRONT-OF-THE-HOUSE

Like any largescale business, hotels often have accountants, plumbers, designers and marketers on staff. Depending on the size of the hotel and whether it’s a stand-alone or part of a bigger chain, these positions may be filled in-house or by outsourcing.

RECEPTIONISTS, also known as a clerks, are responsible for welcoming guests upon arrival, checking visitors in and out, distributing keys, and dealing with reservations and payments. They also handle any complaints or inquiries that may arise.

The hotel CONCIERGE is charged with providing guests with information about surrounding attractions, transportation options and local dining venues. The concierge may also book reservations on behalf of the guests and coordinate sightseeing tours and the like. BELLHOPS, also known as porters, assist guests with their luggage as they unload or load their belongings to and from the hotel. Bellhops may also escort the guests and help them gain familiarity with the hotel setup and location of accomodations. HOUSEKEEPING staff are usually tasked with making beds, replacing towels, vacuuming carpets, disinfecting bathrooms, and refreshing the rooms with new toiletries and knick-knacks as needed.

are responsible for parking the cars that guests leave at the hotel entrance. When the guests wish to exit the hotel premises, the valet is tasked with retrieving the car as well. Not every hotel has valet parking; it is typically available at larger hotels in busy areas. VALET ATTENDANTS

FALLEN PHRASE Find the hidden quote about hosting by dropping the proper letters into each square. The list of available letters is given at the top of each column. Some words begin on one line and continue on the next. Once a letter is used, it cannot be used again. Stumped? Try to fill in the short words first, and then look for patterns.
