(Re: The Perfect Gift, Issue 212) I really enjoyed the stories about funny and meaningful gifts, especially Risa Rotman’s story. Risa, although you don’t know us, we all know you — as a courageous woman who is standing strong despite the devastating loss you suffered in such a traumatic way. Your story was very touching, and it was heartwarming to “hear” from you again. Thank you! And I’m so glad you found your earring! A Reader

(Re: The Chocolate Empire, Issue 210) A postscript to your enlightening feature on the origins of the Schmerling chocolate company: It was fascinating to learn the meaningful history behind our favorite chocolate. I was particularly intrigued to learn that all Schmerling products are kosher l’Pesach all year round — because I associate Schmerling with Pesach. Back when there were just a few Schmerling flavors (and they had the luxurious price tag of close to $2 a piece), after not “mishing” all Pesach, my father would reveal a beautiful
YOUR SAY NOT PUBLIC PROPERTY
I’m watching a new construction going up next door, and while my boys are hugely entertained by the constant lineup of trucks and workers coming and going, our family also keeps noticing random passersby heading inside the house to see what’s happening. While I’m sure some of these “visitors” have the owner’s permission to enter, I’m finding it hard to believe that any and all people passing on Shabbos afternoon asked the owner for permission to enter. It’s kind of like Gittel Indig in your Power Tools serial who seems to be comfortable going on a tour in Lani’s new house without the latter’s permission. I asked a friend of mine who’s recently done construction if she experienced this while building, and she told me that they definitely heard from neighbors that people kept coming and going, and that her husband was once stopped by a man who told him that he’d been to the house and has some questions! Not only was this man lacking the proper shame at having visited without permission, but he even had the audacity to ask insignificant questions. Fellow neighbors: That house standing empty is not public property! Please ask permission before entering, just as you would knock on any other door you’d like to access. A Dismayed Neighbor

PARSHAS VAYIGASH Many Years To Come
When Pharaoh meets Yaakov the first time, his opening question is, “How old are you?” Yaakov replies, “One hundred thirty years; they have been few and miserable, and they have not yet reached the days of the years of my forefathers” (Bereishis 47:8–9). This exchange is puzzling. First of all, the question seems inappropriate. Is this the first thing one should ask when meeting an elderly person? Also, why did Yaakov add that his years have been few and miserable? Why grumble to Pharaoh? Third, Yaakov’s comment that he hasn’t yet reached the age of his forebears is strange. How did he know he wouldn’t grow to be as old as they did?
FOR MANY YEARS, the famed Gaon Reb Aryeh Leib, zt”l, better known as the Sha’agas Aryeh, wandered from town to town in exile. With a pack on his back containing just his tallis and tefillin and basic necessities, he looked very much the part of a poor beggar. He always took with him a pot, spoon and some grains of barley, for he wouldn’t eat from others’ food. During his wanderings, he arrived at the city of Konigsberg, where Rav Aryeh Leib Epstein, zt”l, author of Hapardes, served as rav. Without revealing his identity, the Sha’agas Aryeh went to the rav’s home to speak in learning. With brilliant chiddushim to offer, the Torah giants each expounded on their points vocally, becoming engaged in a heated debate. In an attempt to rationalize his stance, Rav Epstein offered a proof from the sefer Sha’agas Aryeh. (Printed in Frankfurt in 1756 during the Sha’agas Aryeh’s years in exile, the sefer had circulated quickly and gained the approval of the gedolei hador.) “The rav doesn’t understand the words of the Sha’agas Aryeh!” the guest countered emphatically. “This is not what he meant!” The rav was speechless. How could his poor fellow be so impudent as to make such a statement to the rav of the town?

The rav looked his guest squarely in the face for several moments, and trembled. He had heard that the Sha’agas Aryeh had an awe-inspiring countenance, and now, as he beheld his guest, whose eyes flashed fire, he suddenly realized that the man standing before him was none other than the Sha’agas Aryeh himself! The rav stood up in honor of his distinguished guest and begged forgiveness for not having welcomed him appropriately. Then he showed the Sha’agas Aryeh to a room in his home. Over the next few days, the two enjoyed learning together. Not long after, Rav Epstein received a letter from the city of Metz, offering him a contract to become their rav. He immediately declined the offer and recommended the Sha’agas Aryeh instead. “Who is more worthy to be rav of the city of Metz than you? With your koach haTorah, yiras Shamayim, and strength of character, it is befitting for you to take on the post that gedolei olam have held in the past!” The Sha’agas Aryeh accepted, and the people of Metz were delighted. When the Sha’agas Aryeh arrived in Metz, he received a suitable kabbalas panim, after which he delivered the customary opening speech in the beis midrash before the entire

town. The townspeople were impressed by their new rav’s sharpness and breadth of knowledge. Soon, the community leaders went to their new rav’s home to welcome him personally and express their joy that their city was meriting such a great gaon in their midst. During their conversation, they gently wished the new rav that he merit retaining his new position for many years to come. The Sha’agas Aryeh perceived that they were concerned he wouldn’t be able to serve the kehillah for long, as he was getting on in years, and he replied by citing the pasuk in Vayigash describing Yaakov Avinu’s first meeting with Pharaoh. “Why did Pharaoh want to know how old Yaakov was?” he posed. “And why did Yaakov give such a long response, mentioning that his days were short and miserable, and that he hadn’t reached the age of his forefathers?” The Sha’agas Aryeh explained this according to the Midrash. “Pharaoh noticed that when Yaakov arrived, he brought along tremendous bracha. The hunger ended, and the Nile rose. He had to admit that hosting the tzaddik in their land had a markedly positive effect. “But when Pharaoh got to meet Yaakov in person, he grew worried. Yaakov looked very old. Pharaoh was afraid that once Yaakov would pass on, the blessings would disappear, too. He wanted to know Yaakov’s age so he could try and estimate how long the bracha would remain. “This explains Yaakov’s response. He understood Pharaoh’s intent and thus replied that while he was already one hundred thirty years old, he had not yet reached the age of his forefathers. Only because his years were difficult did he look as old as he did. Pharaoh needn’t worry! He still had plenty time to live. “I can say the same,” the Sha’agas Aryeh concluded. “My life was difficult. I was persecuted and subjected to exile, and that’s why I look so old. But I assure you, that with siyata d’Shmaya, I will serve the city of Metz faithfully for twenty years, at least.” His pledge came true, and he passed away in Metz at the age of 90.

NO MORE DRILLING, FILLING AND BILLING Can you fix a broken vase, salvage burnt food, or rescue a waterlogged wool coat? Of course not. Is it possible to heal a tooth that’s gotten a cavity? Most people would say no. But with Nature’s Miracle Clay toothpaste from Nature’s Cue, the answer is yes — you can heal cavities! As the name suggests, Nature’s Cue Miracle Clay toothpaste is truly wondrous. Using this new mint-flavored toothpaste made from Miracle Clay can remineralize your teeth, stop tooth pain, help you avoid root canals and heal infections. Many report that it also whitens teeth as well as strengthening and rebuilding gums. How does all this happen? Through the miracle of Hashem’s nature.
FRINGE BENEFITS, NOT SIDE EFFECTS Ever studied the leaflet insert of a prescription healthcare product? You might find a long list of possible side effects in fine print, ranging from mild to severe. You close your eyes and swallow the bitter pill, hoping none of those side effects are actually real. Imagine if, instead of negative side effects, you would instead experience side benefits from the product you use to heal a condition. Sounds like a miracle, doesn’t it? That’s what nature is all about, says Mrs. Rosenbaum, the founder and healing expert behind Nature’s Cue. Natural remedies harmonize with the body, so that each product is helpful in many ways. And that is Hashem’s miracle. Some of Nature’s Cue’s most popular products, including the new Nature’s Cue toothpaste, are made with Miracle Clay. This is a naturally-occurring, unique, highly effective 58

clay that consistently produces results. Miracle clay is an ancient remedy that is used to remove chemicals, radiation and toxins from the body. It provides the body with minerals we so often lack today, and brings circulation and balances the body, which are necessary for healing. Underground clays come in thousands of variations. Each one differs from the other in its mineral compounds and how it effects the body; the mineral makeup of the clay depends on where it originates. Nature’s Cue Miracle Clay is taken from deep underground, where it isn’t exposed to chemicals. The clay Nature’s Cue sells is never heated, treated or washed, because such processing can destroy its benefits. For top-quality Miracle Clay, make sure to buy from Nature’s Cue.
PURE, PHENOMENAL, POWERFUL Miracle Clay can heal and offer relief for a wide range of conditions. It’s truly a phenomenon of nature. One satisfied customer said, “Your clay is like the joker in a deck of cards!” No part of the body is unaffected by its positive effects. For the following conditions, taking Nature’s Cue Miracle Clay internally or applying externally can provide powerful healing: IBS

The latest, and most popular Miracle Clay product is the mint-flavored Miracle Clay toothpaste that kids and adults enjoy using, healing their teeth in a completely natural way. It would be advisable to review the leaflet found in the box for important information. Teeth Trays are available for easy application for dental issues. Nature’s Cue is also producing a new product: An easy to use healing and restoring skin cream for eczema, psoriasis, hemorrhoids, dry skin, chapped skin, and much more, containing high quality healing oils and plants with Miracle Clay.
REAL-LIFE REPORTS Customers who have used this toothpaste report that they’ve been able to avoid dental procedures like root canals, even when the dentist predicted it would be necessary. Feedback like this keeps streaming in, with numerous cavities regrowing through the remineralization of Nature’s Cue Miracle Clay toothpaste. Imagine if your experience could be similar to the following testimonials.
“At my first exam, the dentist informed me that I have 17 cavities. After using Miracle Clay toothpaste according to the instructions for a couple of weeks, I went back to the dentist, who found just 7 cavities left. I didn’t do any dental procedures, just kept on brushing with Miracle Clay, and all the rest of the cavities were soon also gone.”
“I went for my yearly gum treatment after using Miracle Clay on my gums. Surprisingly, my dentist said that my gums look healthy and I don’t need any treatment. ‘Just keep doing whatever you did,’ he exclaimed.”
My husband had a toothache and the dentist said he needed a root canal. Baruch Hashem, I had just heard about the amazing power Miracle Clay has for healing teeth. His tooth was slightly infected and the dentist sent him to a root canal specialist as he said it’s a complicated root canal and he cannot do it himself. My husband started applying the Clay Cream. After a few days, his tooth stopped hurting him.
“My dentist recommended surgery when I got for an infection under my crown. Instead, I brushed with Miracle Clay, following the directions on the toothpaste instruction card, and it healed without doing any surgery.”
He did this for about a week and a half, and then another three days after Pesach until his appointment with the specialist. At the appointment, the dentist took new x-rays and said there is nothing wrong with the tooth, he can go home, no work needed at all! My husband started telling him that he put on a special clay, so the dentist laughed and said “clay, shmay, you never had a root canal with this tooth!” What amazed me was that he only did this for about two weeks and with this avoided the root canal, the cost of it, and all the negative repercussions it has on the person. It’s hard to believe, but this is the true story!
“When I got a nasty infection on three of my front teeth, I panicked. After my dentist confirmed that I needed to extract them all, I went to a top dentist in Manhattan for a second opinion. His approach was to extract the center tooth, giving him access to the other two infected teeth so he could clean them. At my appointment for extraction, I told him I used Nature’s Miracle Clay Cream, and I’ve heard from people who shared amazing experiences. I asked if he could do another x-ray before extraction to confirm that it was necessary. He agreed, and was speechless when he saw a 60% improvement. The entire dental staff was in shock. ‘Keep doing what you did and come back in a few months to recheck,’ he said in surprise.”

THE MAKINGS OF A MIRACLE Nature’s Cue Miracle Clay toothpaste has quickly become a bestselling product, selling out faster than it can be produced. In the few months that it’s been on the market, thousands of tubes have been sold. Miracle Clay toothpaste provides everything needed for healing teeth. It remineralizes teeth, absorbs bacteria and viruses, and promotes circulation to the area which supports healing. The toothpaste includes Miracle Clay, of course, but there’s also Nature’s Cue Colloidal Silver and essential oils. Each ingredient is beneficial for the teeth. Mrs. Rosenbaum, the founder of Nature’s Cue, says she created this toothpaste to help the many people who turned to her for help in naturally healing their dental problems. She had already been recommending Miracle Clay cream for dental health, but she wanted to make it easier to use. Creating the toothpaste took it to the next level. The toothpaste has a fresh mint flavor that tastes good unlike using the Miracle Clay cream which doesn’t have a pleasant taste. It also comes in an easy-to-use toothpaste tube, so that using Miracle Clay for your teeth is easier and more pleasant than ever. She also created a tube squeezer to squeeze out the tooth paste at the end of the tube. Purpose of ingredients in the Miracle Clay toothpaste: MIRACLE CLAY Remineralizes teeth | Absorbs toxins | Brings healing circulation to the area

Nature’s Cue is more than just a business. It’s the story of one woman’s passion to bring natural healing to as many people as possible.
A BUSINESS IS BORN Mrs. Rosenbaum’s interest in natural remedies was sparked when she was still a young girl. She loved learning about natural plants and their powerful healing effects, doing research to find out how to make natural cures. Then she began experimenting, creating her own combinations for family and friends. She never meant to turn her hobby into a business. It was just a way of helping those around her. The products definitely helped! Family and friends reported amazing results after using them. They were the ones to encourage her to offer them to the public. Still, the business didn’t start right away, until one day, while placing an order, she discovered that the vendor required a wholesale account. They asked her, “What’s your company name?” On the spur of the moment, Mrs. Rosenbaum replied, “Nature’s Cure.” And in that moment, a business was born. Despite Nature’s Cure’s spontaneous creation, the name encapsulated exactly what Mrs, Rosenbaum’s new business offered: Remedies and cures taken exclusively from nature, in their purest form. Recently, Mrs. Rosenbaum updated the name to Nature’s Cue. Each of her products takes its cue from nature, making it a perfect name change. And the change is slight, so you’ll still easily recognize your favorite brand of health products.
THERE’S NOTHING LIKE NATURE The natural remedies that Nature’s Cue produces have many unique benefits. “Nature, the way Hashem created it, is perfectly calibrated. It’s not missing anything,” Mrs. Rosenbaum explains. “It helps the body heal itself, instead of covering up a single issue with a stopgap band-aid.” That’s why Mrs. Rosenbaum is so careful to use only natural and pure plant ingredients that harmonize with your body, allowing it to heal naturally. The body absorbs and utilizes plants effectively, so she’s careful not to allow any added preservatives or binders in her formulas. Every ingredient in Nature’s Cue products is pure, real and totally natural. High standards of quality is one of the reasons Nature’s Cue products are so popular and effective. All of Nature’s Cue products are produced with a careful attention to detail. Below is a sampling of some Nature’s Cue products and remedies.
PRODUCTS FOR CARE, POINTERS TO SHARE Mrs. Rosenbaum loves helping people with her knowledge. Nature’s Cue has become a forum for sharing natural healing, not just a business that sells products. In fact, she’s so passionate about sharing what she knows that the “business” part of her business often takes a backseat! She runs a monthly conference call, where she discusses a health topic and individuals have the opportunity for live Q&A or to share feedback. Even more, you can

Substation Fire Causes Rare NYC Power Outage A fault in a Con Edison transmission line had lights flickering for a brief moment throughout the city and even on Long Island and in New Jersey. The outage took place just before midnight on December 14. According to ABC News, it occurred when a piece of high-voltage electrical equipment failed as Con Edison employees were restoring a transmission line near the Brooklyn waterfront. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion and seeing smoke emanating from the Farragut Substation on John Street. While the power flickered for just an instant, it left people trapped in elevators and caused brief outages for trains running between Grand Central Terminal and Wall Street. Con Edison president Matt Ketschke said that the outage was brief, with voltage recovering or returning to normal quickly. Still, Metropolitan Transportation Authority Janno Lieber said that 178 of his agency’s elevators and escalators were affected, with two people having to be rescued from elevators.
Self-Drive Safety Issue Prompts Massive Tesla Recall Tesla has recalled more than 2 million vehicles over safety concerns related to its autopilot system, a move that affects nearly all of its cars that are currently on the road in the United States. tiple lawsuits over crashes linked to its Autosteer technology, some of which involve fatal accidents. As many as 393 people have died in Tesla-related accidents, with at least 95 of those occurring in Teslas whose self-driving feature was engaged. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration began formally investigating Tesla’s driver-assistance technology in 2021. The recall, Tesla’s largest ever, has many suggesting that the electric automaker is liable for those accidents. “We believe that Tesla knew there was a problem and that this recall validates that,” said lawyer Adam Boumel, who is involved in a case related to a fatal Tesla crash that took place in 2019 in Florida. The recall affects 2012–2013 Model S, 2017–2023 Model 3, 2016–2023 Model X and 2020–2023 Model Y Teslas that are equipped with Autopilot. Tesla will begin sending an “overthe-air” software fix to affected vehicles on December 12, with no dealer visit required to correct the issue. Owners can expect to receive a letter outlining the problem, as well as its solution, in February 2024.
Dozens of Toll Evaders Owing $900K+ Caught in Verrazano Bridge Crackdown A four-day operation at the Verrazano Bridge will have the Metropolitan Transportation Authority recouping $922,500 in unpaid tolls from drivers who were nabbed in the sting. The New York Post reported that 44 vehicles were impounded and had their registrations suspended. Owners will have to pay up if they want their vehicles back. “This is about fundamental fairness,” explained MTA chairman Janno Lieber. “It’s not right when drivers, some rolling around in Mercedes and Porches, come onto our bridges and through tunnels, and skip out on paying thousands and thousands of dollars in tolls.” Among the vehicles seized in the crackdown were a garbage truck owned by a private trash hauler and a Range Rover whose driver owes $50,000 in unpaid tolls. All of the vehicles that were impounded had either plastic license plate covers designed to thwart toll cameras or fake out-of-state license plates. Several of the motorists caught in the operation also had suspended licenses or were driving uninsured vehicles. While the owed toll monies will be helpful to the struggling MTA, they represent just a tiny portion of funds actually due to the agency. The MTA said that it lost $46 million to toll evaders in 2022.

For the second time in two years, New York’s congressional district maps are being redrawn, giving Democrats a shot at taking control of the House of Representatives in next year’s elections. A New York State Court of Appeals ordered the state’s redistricting commission to draw a new map by February 28, 2024, with the Democratcontrolled state legislature having final say over the map. Republicans are already bracing themselves for a district map favoring Democrats and contemplating ways to create what they consider to be a more balanced alternative. New York went through the redistricting process last year, and when the state’s Independent Redistricting Commission failed to approve a map, Democrats submitted one of their own. That district map so heavily favored Democrats that a state court rejected it and drew up an updated version, with Republicans ultimately taking control of four new congressional seats in the 2023 elections. Smarting from that loss, state Democrats sued for a new districting map to be drawn up. That request resonated with the court, who ruled 4-3 in favor of the move. Writing the majority decision, Chief Judge Rowan D. Wilson explained that the New York State Constitution was amended in 2014 to specify that legislative districts be drawn by an Independent Redistricting Commission composed of an equal number of Democrats and Republicans. With the commission deadlocking last year, it was a state court, not the redistricting committee, that actually drew up the new congressional districts. “The Constitution demands that process, not districts drawn by courts,” wrote Wilson. Congresswoman Suzan DelBene, chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, called the decision a win for New Yorkers and for democracy. “We are eager for the Independent Redistricting Commission to get back

to work to create a new, fair congressional map — through the process New York voters intended,” said DelBene. Congressman Mike Lawler, whose district includes all of Rockland County, blasted the decision, calling it “corrupt Albany politics at its worst.” Lawler’s surprise win over incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, made headlines in the 2022 elections and also helped give Republicans control of the House of Representatives. “Kathy Hochul, Hakeem Jeffries, and Albany and Washington Democrats stacked the court with a handpicked judge to deliver the decision they need to rig New York’s Congressional maps,” said Lawler, who is up for re-election in 2024. “Let me be clear — stacking the court to influence its decision is a direct threat to democratic norms in New York.”
Water beads may be a big hit with kids, but with the superabsorbent polymer spheres capable of growing to 100 times their original size or more when exposed to water, Amazon, Target and Walmart will stop selling products that are aimed at children and contain the tiny orbs. The beads, which are sold under the name Orbeez as well as in unbranded versions, look harmless and are often marketed as sensory toys. Kids of all ages reportedly enjoy their slippery feel and gel-like texture, and in addition to being sold on their own, they can be included in toys and craft kits designed for children. But according to the Consumer Products Safety Commission, water beads can grow inside the body after being swallowed, causing vomiting, dehydration, intestinal blockages, life-threatening injuries and even death. In many instances, water beads have had children suffering severe consequences and requiring surgery, with at least one death reported as well. An estimated 7,800 children were treated in hospital emergency rooms from 2016 through 2022 for injuries caused by swallowing the beads, while others have sustained hearing loss after inserting the beads in their ears. Efforts to ban the beads have been underway for months, reported CNN Business. New Jersey Congressman Frank Pallone Jr. noted that water beads are sold in packages that contain as many as 75,000 orbs, with no way to guarantee that some might not fall on the floor where they can be ingested by a small child. “It takes just one to harm a child,” said Pallone. “They are not labeled as dangerous to small children. There’s no warning, and they’re not hard to get.” Amazon has given its sellers until December 22 to stop selling water beads that are being marketed to children, which includes those being used as ammunition for kids’ “gel blaster” guns. Walmart and Target will both discontinue online

and in-store sales of water beads, with Walmart pulling products aimed at kids nine and under, while Target is also ending sales of similar items for children 12 and under. Parents, caregivers, schools and camps who have water beads are urged not to allow their children to play with them without supervision and to store them in a secure container and location, although given their ability to roll and scatter easily, the CPSC is recommending that parents discard the items. Anyone who suspects that a child might have ingested a water bead should call their doctor or the National Poison Help Line at 800-222-1222 at any time of day or night.
New York Prisons Now Required To Offer Kosher Food Options Inmates at New York State correctional facilities whose religions include special dietary restrictions will have greater options at mealtimes thanks to new legislation signed into law by Governor Kathy Hochul last week. Prisons in New York will now have both kosher and halal choices available in their commissaries and vending machines. Prices for those foods will be comparable to similar items under the legislation, which was sponsored by Senator Jessica Ramos and Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein. Ramos noted that not having access to kosher food was a targeted punishment on top of any sentence that was already being served. She credited local rabbis and faith leaders for supporting her efforts, which she hopes to extend to public schools throughout New York. Eichenstein expressed his gratitude to both Hochul and Ramos for their efforts, noting that New York is required by law to respect the religious dietary rights of all state residents, even those who are jailed. “These individuals will now be able to benefit from food purchased at visiting area vending machines or at the prison commissary,” said Eichenstein, adding, “Now the religious rights of incarcerated individuals in our state’s prison system will be properly recognized.” 72

he empty desk next to Riva spewed awkwardness. Everyone in the office sat so stiffly in their seats, you’d think it was their first day at work. Or last. Mr. Gabioff, however, showed no signs of discomfiture. He went about his day as though nothing had happened. “Girls,” he announced suddenly. “Stick around for lunch today. I ordered food for everyone.” Okaaaaay. Around the room, the women exchanged looks. It was nearly impossible not to snicker. Mr. Gabioff ordered lunch for the staff sometimes. On Rosh Chodesh, if he remembered, or when an employee returned after an extended leave. There was no occasion to celebrate that day. This gesture proved that he did feel uncomfortable about Shuli, after all, and this was 78

his unique way of dealing with the awkwardness. The food arrived an hour later. He’d ordered a sushi platter, mini sandwiches, a Greek salad, penne a la vodka, and some drinks and pastries. The staff brought their chairs around — of all ironic spaces — Shuli’s empty desk. Shoshi leaned over to Riva and muttered, “Could he, like, disappear, so we can actually eat?” “Exactly,” Riva whispered. She took a plate and politely filled it with some food. Their boss didn’t sit down with them, obviously, but he was so there, it was impossible to eat. When he finally got distracted by a phone call, they relaxed a bit and chatted in low tones over the lunch. “Mrs. Stroh?” Riva swallowed a whole piece of lettuce and nearly choked as she said, “Yes?” “A minute, please?”

SHE WAS SUDDENLY VERY ANXIOUS TO GET THE PROJECT OFF THE GROUND. HER VERY OWN LEAD — THAT WOULD BE SO INCREDIBLE
W h a t ? What’s going on? What did I do wrong? She quickly swiped her lips with a napkin and followed her boss out to the hallway. “So, Mrs. Stroh,” Mr. Gabioff said. “Don’t get scared, I’m not firing you or anything.” He laughed the kind of laugh that made his shoulders bob up and down. Riva couldn’t even bring herself to smile. Mr. Gabioff grew serious. “I just wanted to follow up with you. You know I care for my staff, and although everyone mainly keeps their personal lives out of the office, I’m aware that everyone has a personal life.” He looked at her with what could only be defined as concern. It didn’t look fake; he really meant it. This was the softness her boss was known for outside of his business. This was how many people knew him. Riva had no idea what to say, or if she was expected to say anything at all. She gave a little play-it-safe cough. After a moment, Mr. Gabioff continued talking. “We spoke a few weeks ago, and I’ve been a little worried about you. I hope things are getting better?” “Uh…” The lettuce had somehow clogged up her throat. “Um, yeah. A little.” “Okay, okay, good. I just wanted to tell you again, if you need some leeway — if you want me to reassign some of your accounts or anything — I totally understand. And if you ever need to take a day off, come late, leave early… don’t hesitate. I’m okay with that.” Riva’s face burned. She mumbled, “Thanks, I appreciate that,” and shakily followed him back into the office.

Miriam looked like she was going to burst from curiosity. Riva ignored her. She looked at the food in front of her as though it was some decorat ion. W hatever appetite she may have had before, it was completely gone now. He was being except ion a l l y kind to her. She should be grateful. But instead, the awkwardness of the whole day was making her increasingly sick. Back at her desk after lunch, Riva tried to get back into work mode. She went through the list she’d written in the morning, checking off the things she’d taken care of and figuring out what to do next. With her leaving early twice a week for Fraidy’s therapy sessions, she’d been falling behind with her work, and she was determined to catch up. Maybe she’d even pursue that Roth lead. She’d done some of her own networking recently and bumped into this opportunity. Now, she was suddenly very anxious to get the project off the ground. Her very own lead — that would be so incredible. “Mrs. Stroh?” Again? What’s in the lettuce today? “Yes?” “Did you schedule 228 Eagle with Acker?” “Yes, I did. It’s all taken care of.” Which was almost true. She was still waiting for Acker’s confirmation, but she couldn’t bring herself to tell him that. After the lunch and his magnanimous words, the only right thing to do was make the boss happy. Mr. Gabioff hung around for the rest of the day, and in a way Riva was glad about that. She wasn’t in the mood

of repeating the minutes of her meeting with the entire staff. When she passed her boss’s desk on the way out of the office, she paused. Even if the Roth lead wouldn’t pan out, she could earn points just for trying. “I got a new lead, Mr. Gabioff.” The words sounded good to her own ears, and that buoyed her to continue. “ S omeone’s completing a development of twelve two-bedroom rentals, and he’ll probably want to hire a cleaning crew before conducting an open house. I’m working on it, and I’ll let you know if it materializes.” Mr. Gabioff nodded. She searched his face for acknowledgment — excitement, appreciation, anything — but he accepted her words impassively. What did she think? That he’d had a personality transplant? Her limbs felt weak as she walked out of the building. Ugh. So ugh. What was she trying to accomplish? Earn his kindness, retroactively? And what was he trying to accomplish? Why the sudden kindness? Was he worried that she would quit on him one day, the way Shuli had? Well, he had every reason to worry. Lunches were very nice, but if the office environment didn’t change soon, he might just lose his entire staff. *****
Maddie was waiting for Riva at the door when she arrived home with Eli. “I’m so sorry, Maddie, I ran a little late. Are you waiting for long?” “No, no, it’s okay,” Maddie said. “Don’t worry.” Riva asked her to start with the ironing, simply because she needed

her out of the way so she could get her act together. She went to her room to change into com for t able clothing, but was startled by a sudden crash, followed by a yelp. “Maddie?” She ran to the kids’ room. The cleaning lady was on the floor, clutching her ankle and moaning. “Oh my goodness. Maddie! What happened?” “I’m so sorry, the steamer… I hope I didn’t break it!” “Don’t worry about the steamer. Are you okay?” She winced. “I’m okay, just my foot…” “Do you think it’s broken? Should I call for help?” Maddie turned pink. “Uh, maybe, my sister… I’ll call her.” She really did need help — and as horrible as it was to think it, there went Riva’s help. When her sister arrived, they escorted a hopping Maddie down the stairs. An hour later, Maddie texted Riva. My ankle is broken. I won’t be able to work for the next few weeks. I’m so sorry. Panic clogged Riva’s throat. No cleaning help. She was doomed. Grimly, she picked up the phone to update Gittel Indig, who would be expecting Maddie the next morning. “Oh, woooow,” Gittel said. “Look at that, we don’t even realize how important a person is until they’re absent.” “That’s so thoughtful of you, Gittel. I have to admit that my own thoughts were a lot more selfish than that.” Gittel didn’t seem to recognize the compliment. “Let me ask you a question,” she said instead. “My Shaindy’s moving into her new house in two weeks. Three nights of sleep, lost. For nothing. The kitchen was duly replaced — the wrong order picked up, the correct one dropped off — to Lani’s disbelieving signature. But then Andy came by and shared his “small update.” “I’m going away in July, for six weeks,” he told Lani, stretching his tape measure and pressing down to retract it again. “Some of my crew will be around, but a lot of them will take vacation during that time. I was sure we’d long be done with this house, but you know…” She knew, alright. There went that night’s sleep. “Maybe we can try to finish everything before I leave?” Andy suggested. “Before he left” gave them a grand total of five weeks. Was this contractor being optimistic or delusional? “I’d surely like to try,” Lani agreed. A six-week delay in the summer, then before you blink, they’d be at the Yomim Noraim. There was no way in the world she was making Yom Tov in the basement. Absolutely no way. From the minute the goal was set, it was like a timer started ticking, and Lani’s heart rate promptly accelerated. Paint colors. Floor color. Foyer tiles. Wallpaper. Faucets. Appliances. What am I forgetting? Chaim Tzvi actually grew tense when Lani told him what was happening. “Ouch,” he said. “That’s… tight.” But then he got right on the phone with the scraper and booked him. Mr. Pragmatic. After two hours in the house, talking to Batsheva, to Andy, to the plumber, to The Tilery, to Chaim Tzvi, and to Batsheva six more times, Lani’s head felt like a sack of thinset mortar. “I’m going downstairs to get a coffee,” she mouthed to Chaim Tzvi, who was engrossed in a conversation on the phone. “Want one?” He shook his head. At the basement entrance, Lani stopped short. Grr… The place was a

mess. She had run over to her mother that morning to make that day’s breakfasts, then got caught up in the house with the kitchen delivery and Andy’s bombshell. What had she expected? That elves would wash the laundry, dishes, bathroom, and floor while she was out? Okay, not elves. But maybe… Maddie? That was it. It was going to be a crazy five weeks now, and if she wanted to preserve her sanity, she needed Maddie to keep her apartment in shape. Riva didn’t answer the phone. Oh, right, she was at work. How interesting — other people’s lives moved along while yours felt like it was spinning out of control. Lani dialed her cell. “So sorry for calling you at work.” “I’m not at work.” Why did it sound like her sister had snapped at her? “Oh. Uh…” “Fraidy’s in session with her therapist. I’m waiting for them to finish.” That’s why. Ah. Lani set her electric kettle to boil. “Uh, I don’t want to keep you… I just wanted to check if Maddie isn’t working at anyone’s house tomorrow, because I urgently need her.” “She isn’t,” Riva said. “Not tomorrow and not for the foreseeable future. She broke her ankle, and she won’t be able to work for the next few weeks.” “You’re joking.” “I’m sorry… I wish I was… I need her just as urgently.” “Yikes. What are we going to doooo? Hey, wait! Maybe we can get some hours from one of your cleaning crew ladies! When they aren’t booked…?” “No. That won’t work.” “Why not? If they have extra time?” “I don’t want to mix anything workrelated with my personal life. It’s just… a bad idea.” “If you say so…” “Trust me.” Riva let out a tired breath. “Anyway, what time do you think you can be at SpecTac tonight, to set up?” “Spec—?” Oh goodness. The anniversary. Tonight. And also… pulled beef gnocchi. She’d completely forgotten. TO BE CONTINUED…

A conversation with Yitzy Kasowitz about his decades in the security industry
How does a nice Jewish boy end up as a firearms instructor and security consultant?
PHOTO: ISRAEL BRASS
Yitzy Kasowitz has 30 years of martial arts training under his belt and has been working in security for almost as long. In his previous job with a private security firm in Minnesota, where he grew up, he was nicknamed “Commandowitz.” His decades-long career has its roots in summer camp, of all places. At age seven, he stepped in to rescue his younger brother from a fight with a fellow camper, which inspired him to take martial arts classes. Unlike most kids, who eventually outgrow their childhood interests, Yitzy kept at it; in fact, he’s still going strong. According to him, “There’s no such thing as being done with training when it comes to martial arts.” It was his instructor, a former green beret, who recruited Yitzy to work for his private security company. There, Yitzy received intense training, more advanced than most police departments or even, in some aspects, the military. Yitzy and his colleagues were trained by experts in the FBI and the Minneapolis Police Department to use everything that law enforcement officers carry on their belts. Like pepper spray, for instance. The trainees were sprayed with pepper spray so they would know what it feels like, and also to learn how to continue fighting despite being compromised. They were also trained by specific units to learn how to deal with unruly citizens when necessary. The security company was often contracted by the local government, but the bulk of their assignments were at private establishments, like parks, zoos, storage units, malls and shelters.
Community Affairs These days, Yitzy lives with his family in North Miami Beach, where he works as head of security for the community’s largest shul. On the side, Yitzy runs his own company, YK Security, which provides site analysis, training and grant writing services to businesses, shuls, schools and community centers. Yitzy loves working for his community. There are a handful of other shuls in the vicinity of the shul where he 100

If someone’s going to enroll in self-defense or martial arts classes, Yitzy advises that they take it all the way. “Crash courses in self-defense are not effective,” he says. “All they do is provide you with a false sense of security.” Thinking that you’re prepared for an attack but not actually being prepared can be a liability. Proper training takes years, and even decades. If someone chooses to carry pepper spray or mace, it’s important for them to familiarize themselves with the relevant laws in their state. Yitzy also cautions that using pepper spray may be more difficult than people might think. In his training, he was taught to consider the direction of the wind before spraying an opponent. “If the wind is blowing the wrong way, your spray can come back in your own face. This is quite common, even with police officers.” The best thing to do is to attend a training class.
If you’re going to do one thing for your personal safety, it should be… Being aware. Also, take self-defense classes. Not only is it a great workout, it gives you more confidence.
Firearms Yitzy has mixed feelings about gun ownership. “Owning a gun is not for everyone,” he declares. “People

with alcohol problems and those with anger management issues should not own a gun. If someone’s spouse or other family members disagree with them about firearms, they shouldn’t have one either. And, of course, if there are children in the home who may get access to the gun, a person should seriously consider the dangers involved.” Safety must always come first. Ninety-nine percent of the time, the weapon will not be needed. As such, it should be locked into a safe that only adults can access. According to Yitzy, most people are under the misconception that a crash course in firearms training is enough. The truth is that even practicing at the range a hundred times a year won’t prepare you for a gunfight. As with martial arts, Yitzy stresses that there’s never enough training when it comes to firearms. He trained a former ranking officer who had done four tours in combat areas and was stunned to discover that the man had never been taught how to hold a fire-
arm properly. Yitzy was able to disarm him before he could fire the first bullet. Owning and operating a weapon comes with tremendous responsibility, which often goes far beyond what potential gun-carriers imagine. I never thought it would happen to me AS TOLD TO NECHAMA GOLDMAN
I’d been looking forward to the first week of the summer for a long time. My husband, Shimon, was transitioning between jobs, and he was off for an entire week at the beginning of July. As we eased into the routine of the next two months, we were looking forward to spending some time together. One afternoon, Shimon was scrolling through his emails when he paused. There was a bill from PayPal, followed by another email from PayPal with a $650 charge to a store we’d never heard of. “It must be a mistake,” he said. It wasn’t a big deal. Mistakes happen. We’d call, sort it out, and cancel the charge. Shimon picked up his phone and dialed the number at the end of the email. He put the phone on speaker, anticipating a long wait. The call was answered right away. “Hello?” said a man with a foreign accent. Apparently, PayPal hired foreign workers to man the phone lines just like many other major companies. Shimon told the man about the charge we hadn’t made. “Hmm,” the man said. “It must be a mistake. Let me check.” While speaking to Shimon, he tried to prove to him how anyone can access someone’s personal information via his cell phone. Surely, he said, that must be what happened here. He tried to get onto Shimon’s phone to prove his point, but my husband had installed software that blocked his attempts. The man told Shimon to go onto the computer so he could refund the money that had been taken out of our account. My husband complied. A page popped up. “I’m going to show you how I’m going to reimburse you,” the man said. “Type in $150.” My husband typed in that amount. Immediately, two additional zeros appeared so instead of 150, the number 15,000 appeared. “What did you do?” the man cried. “You put in too many zeros. It’s too late — I approved $15,000 to be deposited into your account.” “It’s not my fault,” Shimon said. “You’re the one who approved it.” “You pressed those extra zeros on purpose!” the man said. “This is money 114

laundering. You could be arrested!” “I didn’t press those zeros,” my husband said. “I’m going to lose my job for this,” the man said mournfully. “I don’t have a way to get the money out of your account. I’m going to be fired.” At that point, I had to leave the house to pick up my youngest daughter from swimming lessons. I hoped the story would be resolved by the time I came back. That day, it took me longer than usual to find a parking space near the pool. I had just buckled my daughter into the car when my husband called. He was in CVS, he said. He’d taken an Uber there because the PayPal worker had told him that he could refund the $15,000 through gift cards. If he started buying gift cards now, the man said, my husband would show that he could be trusted. Otherwise, he was obviously a thief who would suffer the consequences of his actions. I drove toward CVS to pick up my husband. On the way, I called my friend Naomi. “Hi, Kaila,” she said when she answered the phone. “What’s up?” “I’m running late,” I told her. “I’m not going to be home when Shuly gets off the day camp bus. Can you take her to your house?” “Sure,” Naomi said. “Um… is everything okay?” I knew why she was asking. I’m an extremely conscientious mother. It was totally out of character for me not to be waiting at that bus stop — especially on the first day of camp. “Yeah, everything’s fine,” I said. “Thanks a million.” I hung up. I was in a rush to get to CVS. Surely, in a few minutes, this whole saga would be behind us.
“I’M GOING TO LOSE MY JOB FOR THIS,” THE MAN SAID MOURNFULLY. “I DON’T HAVE A WAY TO GET THE MONEY OUT OF YOUR ACCOUNT. I’M GOING TO BE FIRED”

When I pulled into the parking lot, my husband was waiting for me. He was holding two gift cards, each one worth $500. He came into the car, his phone pressed against his ear. “Remember,” the PayPal worker was saying, “don’t tell anyone about this. It’s very, very personal. It has to stay a secret between you and me.” I stared at my husband. Something didn’t seem right. Why all the secrecy? But my husband listened to the man, nodding as he spoke. He took pictures of the cards and sent the images to the man. “Now go to Costco,” the man said. “You should get two gift cards, each one worth one thousand dollars.” I bit my lip. Two thousand dollars? That was a lot of money. But as if on autopilot, I drove to Costco, my mind whirling with a thousand questions. Was this normal? Why were we extending ourselves for this guy? Could we really be guilty of committing a crime if he was the one who’d made the mistake? What was going on? I slid into a parking spot while my husband ran out. I waited in the car with my daughter, who kept asking, “Where is Tatty going?” I was so uptight I couldn’t answer her. I just kept my lips pressed together as I wiped the sweat from my forehead. The air conditioning was going full blast, but I felt like I was in a sauna. Twenty minutes later, my husband was back into the car. The store was out of gift cards for that amount. The man was still speaking into his ear. This time, he was sending us to Lowe’s. I was filled with a sense of foreboding. Something didn’t seem right. I was a mother; I had to pick up my daughter and cook supper. How did this man have the right to send me from store to store? “We have to go home,” I told my husband. “We have to get Shuly. This is ridiculous.” “Don’t listen to your wife,” the man said. “She doesn’t understand anything. Drop her off at home and then go straight to Lowe’s. But hurry!” I bristled in annoyance. How dare he listen in to our conversation? And how could he put me down like that? My cell phone rang. It was Naomi. 116

WAS THIS NORMAL? WHY WERE WE EXTENDING OURSELVES FOR THIS GUY? COULD WE REALLY BE GUILTY OF COMMITTING A CRIME IF HE WAS THE ONE WHO’D MADE THE MISTAKE?
“Hi, Kaila,” she said. “I just wanted to let you know that Shuly is fine. She’s playing nicely with my kids.” “Thank you,” I said. Baruch Hashem for friends like Naomi. “I just… I’m running a little late. I hope to be back soon.” “Is everything okay, Kaila? Do you need me to send you supper? Do you need anything else?” I hesitated. I wanted to confide in Naomi, but the man had insisted that we tell no one what was going on. “Well… I guess I can tell you,” I said. “It can’t cause any harm.” In a low voice, I filled her in while my husband kept talking to the man on the phone. There was silence for a moment. “Kaila, if I were you, I’d be very, very careful,” she said. “It sounds like a scam.” I froze. At that moment, all the pieces of the puzzle clicked together: the man’s strange insistence that we keep the matter private, his belligerent manner, the mad dash to buy gift card after gift card. I was in full panic mode now. “Shimon, hang up!” I cried. “It’s a scam! The guy is a thief!” In the background, I could hear the man’s strident voice. “Drop off that wife of yours already! Don’t listen to her! She doesn’t know anything!”

TWO PAYPAL EMAILS HAD COME IN, ONE AFTER THE OTHER. ONE WAS REAL, ONE WAS FAKE. WHO COULD HAVE KNOWN THAT BEHIND AN INNOCENT-LOOKING EMAIL LAY A DEVIOUS MIND? I was frantic and kept shouting. “It’s a scam! I’m calling the police!” I did call the police, but they never showed up. The man slammed down the phone. We went home and logged onto our computer. I called the number on the other PayPal email my husband had received. This time, there was a legitimate automated message. I also checked our bank account. There was no extra $15,000 in our account, as the man had claimed. We’d been scammed. As I looked over our bank account, I noticed that money was moving from my children’s accounts into my account. He had free access to our savings. I quickly turned off the computer. With shaking hands, I dialed our computer technician. He was able to access our computer remotely and figure out where the hacker was gaining entry to our computer. Problem solved. Except it wasn’t. Two days later we came home late at night from a wedding and saw that our computer screen was blue and the cursor was moving across it. Our “friend,” apparently, was hacking into our computer once again. Again, our technician got to work. After that, we froze all of our bank accounts and changed all of our passwords. We were safe. But were we really? Ten days later, we found that our screen was once again blue. This time, Mr. Hacker was trying to get into our Amazon account. We turned off the computer right away, as our technician had advised us. It’s been a few weeks, and it’s been quiet so far. In retrospect, I don’t know how we fell for this popular scam. There were so many red flags waving right in front of our faces. Baruch Hashem, we lost “only” five hundred dollars. I know it could have been much worse. One of the CVS gift cards was defective — an obvious miracle. It was also miraculous that Costco was out of the gift cards that the hacker had requested. I’ve learned that in today’s day and age, you can never be too careful. Two PayPal emails had come in, one after the other. One was real, one was fake. Who could have known that behind an innocent-looking email lay a devious mind? I’ve decided to put this story behind me. There’s no use in pointing fingers and lamenting the could-haves and shouldhaves. But going forward, I know one thing: If something seems fishy, slow down and check it out very, very carefully.

When I was asked to write an article about dealing with scammers, I accepted with a smirk. I’m literally part of the Scam the Scammers Association, and our league has a number of successful operations on record. Our mission? Pull the leg of someone who’s trying to scam you. See, I’m scam-savvy, sharp and suspicious. No one will ever get my credit card number, no matter who they allege they are. No promise will make me click a link; no threat will bully me into sending a wire. No intimidating phone call will make me divulge my date of birth. I know the tricks. Don’t we all? It’s 2023! But by the time the article deadline drew near, I had to reach out to the editors and sheepishly ask for an extension. The reason? My computer was at the technician. The reason? It was hacked and infected with spyware. The reason for that? I fell for a scam.

Oh, how the mighty had fallen. It started with a compromised firewall and a download. Much to my horror, my computer was soon blinking, and a screen popped up informing me that my computer was disabled due to a virus, with a recording endlessly blaring from the speakers about the danger of not resolving the issue immediately. The way to fix it, the screen read, was to call Microsoft immediately to resolve the issue before further damage is done. Scam or threat? The gears in my brain started to turn as my heartbeat quickened. The Microsoft pop-
up looked legit, and the entire screen was blinking, and all my accounts were now vulnerable. Everything I had ever saved was prey to scammers as I sat there panicking! And even though I knew — of course I knew — never to call a number without verifying that it’s indeed the intended company, it was like my logical brain went offline and I forgot everything I knew about scams. By the time I desperately started closing my tabs and trying to get the con tech off the computer I had made the mistake of letting him log on to, much of the damage was done. There was spyware installed on my computer for the scammer to keep track of my every move henceforth, and my accounts had been infiltrated. Thankfully, my brain kicked back into gear, and at that point I realized I needed to disable everything, sign out, turn off my computer and let a technician take over to clean up the mess I’d created. We changed all of our passwords, rebooted the computer to revert it to the manufacturer’s settings (I was lucky it was fairly new), and put in a request to Experian to block all electronic access on our Social Security numbers. And that day, I ate a big slice of humble pie. Turns out, I am not that savvy and not that smart, and I had now learned another thing about scams: They are designed to make you panic and convince you that time is of essence — and panic easily overrides suspicion and logic, as you scramble to just make the blinking stop. This experience made me redouble my efforts and further my mission of never letting a scammer get away free. Because even though keeping them on the line doesn’t cost them much, it does prevent them from scamming one more person in the time they are tied up, thinking they’re striking it rich with you. For proper training, I turn my focus to the male segment of the population, because, rather unsurprisingly, studies have shown that women fall for scams at a way greater rate than men. Which women? Those between the ages of 25 and 34 are most susceptible. Am I in that age group? I’m not telling. And this is what they taught me.
“Hi,
Jacob,” my husband heard on the phone.
“Speaking.” “I’m calling from the IRS about an outstanding tax balance that must be paid up immediately to avoid arrest.” “Oh, how much is my bill?” he asked. “One thousand three hundred thirtytwo dollars and seventy-six cents.” “Wow, that’s a lot of money. I don’t have the funds for it now.” “This is the IRS! If you don’t pay your balance right now, we will have no choice but to come to arrest you.” “Yes, sure. I understand. No problem. Where should I come to meet you for my arrest?” Slam!
There
was also the time I was sitting in the car, and over Bluetooth, I heard another guy warning my husband that he was calling from the FBI.
Without missing a beat, he responded, “Hello, FBI! This is the CIA! How can I help you?” And I don’t always stay tongue-tied either. Recently I received a phone call, and the somewhat unsophisticated caller, with an alleged power of prophecy, asked me about my back pain. “Back pain?” “You have back pain, right?” “No,” I said. “Knee pain?” “Nope, just a pain in the brain.” “Where is your pain?” “I have a pain in the brain!” “Did you say migraine?” “No, I said that you are a pain in the brain.” “Oh, we don’t have anything for that.” And with that, the pain in my brain was gone. Did he call again the next day? Yes, he did. What did I do? I told him about the pain in the neck he was being.

dates of birth and credit card numbers to keep them on the line and waste their time. The acute disappointment when they realize they were being played with is just a tiny taste of what they deserve… and it leaves them with less time to scam others. Unlike the time I erred terribly on the side of panic, I often err on the side of caution. Recently, I got a call from an unknown caller who provided my name and that of my husband, but requested my date of birth for verification purposes. “What is this about?” I inquired. “I’m so sorry, but I can’t tell you what it’s about until you verify your identity.” “And I can’t tell you my date of birth unless I know what this is about.” “Like I said, I can’t give out any information until you give me your date of birth.” ”Great, and I can’t give you my date of birth, so I guess we’re even. Have a great day.” Curious if this was a scam attempt, I called back the number on the caller ID to check where it would take me. I reached a legitimate collection agency who had obviously called me in regard to a bill that had been transferred to them. Well, I can’t say that I was that sad about the fact that the information did not get divulged to me. But I also feel the need to hide my identity when I’m in the public eye here. You know, in case anyone reading this plans to steal my identity.

WHO INVENTED SSNS?
S
ocial Security numbers were invented by the government in 1936 in order to keep track of the earnings of U.S. workers so the government could calculate the Social Security benefits each person is entitled to. The system worked so well that others decided to use it too, and today Social Security numbers have become a universal identifier.
PICK A NUMBER, ANY NUMBER
THE NUMIDENT The federal government keeps a master list of all Social Security numbers. It has a name: the Numident.
Social Security numbers are nine digits long. The first three digits were the “area number,” the next two digits the “group number,” and the final four digits the “serial number.” The number 666 is never used as an area number. Group numbers are between 01 and 99. And serial numbers are assigned consecutively, fall between 0001 and 9999, but exclude 0666. Nowadays, SSNs contain none of the old markers in order to better protect your identity.
WHY NINE NUMBERS? Originally, the plan was to use a combination of 5 numbers and 3 letters, with the letters assigned based on geographic location. The problem was that many federal agencies used statistical machines with numbers only, no letters. They would have had to buy new machines. This was, of course, way before personal computers were invented. Why didn’t the Social Security Board just identify people by their names and addresses? Mostly because there were too many people who had the same name. In fact, in 1937, all the Fred Smiths in New York City joined together to create “Fred Smiths, Incorporated.” It was a kind of company, or club, that served to clear up all kinds of problems caused by identity mixups! Another option was to identify people by their unique fingerprints. But since people associate fingerprinting with criminal investigations, that idea was nixed. In the end, the nine-digit system was adopted as most practical.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO The lowest social security number is 001-01-0001, which was issued to Grace D. Owen of New Hampshire in 1936. The Social Security Administration actually published that fact. Apparently, identity theft was not such a thing back then.
PAPER OR METAL The Social Security Board first considered printing Social Security cards on metal — it lasts long, stays accurate (engraving lasts longer than ink), and was economical to produce. Regardless, they ultimately decided on the paper cards we use today.
SPEAKING OF IDENTITY THEFT The most stolen SSN is 078-05-1120, which was stolen over 40,000 times. It belongs to Hilda Schrader Whichter, a secretary at a wallet company in New York. In 1938, a VP at the company decided to sell their wallets with a fake social security card in it. Problem was, they used Hilda’s real name and number on the card. The mess that was created was so enormous that the Social Security Administration was still straightening out mistakes as late as 1977, ten years before Hilda’s death in 1987.
FREE REPLACEMENT You can lose your card ten times during your lifetime – but only three times in one year – and still get a replacement card for free. After that you have to pay.
CHANGE MY NUMBER You can change your number if it’s “bad,” as long as you can prove that there are religious or cultural problems associated with it. You’ll have to provide documentation to support your claim, though. Other reasons you may get a new number are: being the victim of identity theft; too many people knowing your number to the point where it endangers your life; or someone somehow putting your number in some system instead of someone else’s, resulting in a big mess. But you can’t really escape; your new number will be cross-referenced to the old number so your earnings under both will be credited to you.
CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU When you die, it’s over. Your number will never be reassigned to someone else. December 20, 2023
