IT’S CALLED TRESPASSING

Ready to go somewhere?

718.600.6666 Driving you happy!

(Re: Inbox, Why We Go Into Your House, Issue 216) Although I thought this would be self-understood, last week’s letter compels me to state the obvious: It is absolutely inappropriate to ever enter another person’s property or home without permission. This is true whether the home is currently occupied or not, whether it is under construction or not, and whether you may or may not ever get a chance to see the inside of the home. Homes that are owned by developers and have not yet been sold to an occupant are still not owned by you, and therefore, you may not enter those either. The only time it is okay to enter someone’s home without permission is if there is a life-threatening emergency. If there is a tornado and you need shelter, or if you are being chased by a criminal, or if you have a medical emergency and need help, then of course you may run into the nearest home without knocking. Otherwise, there is no justification for it. Just as you would not enter your neighbor’s house when they are on vacation, you may not enter it before they move in. Consult your rav or posek for halachic clarity in this matter. R.Z.

CURIOSITY AND THE CAT

(Re: Inbox, Why We Go Into Your House, Issue 216) Please tell me last week’s letter was a joke. How can a person condone trespassing? I live in Boro Park, have had houses built on my block, and I’ve never heard of neighbors going in to “take a look,” The workers mentioned in the letter are there to service the owners of the W E A T H E R

(Re: The Boro Park View) In my house, Wednesday is The Boro Park View day! It’s the only day of the week that I sit down at night to read a publication. The first thing I read is Week in Review to bring myself up to date on any important news (I don’t listen to any news hotlines, and I don’t read other magazines or newspapers, so I often wonder if I’m not aware of some important news). Then I check out the pictures in the back (which is news as well). Afterward, I leaf through the entire magazine and read the articles and features. I find that your content is easy reading: light, enlightening and informative though I don’t read the serials as I don’t have the headspace to keep up with stories. I especially appreciate that the content is not morbid or sad, and doesn’t focus on tzaros or things that drain our emotional equilibrium. Our day-to-day life is full of it, and we don’t need to read about it as well. When I sit down to The Boro Park View, I know that I’m not in for an emotional roller coaster, and that is exactly why I sit down to read it. I even enjoy the ads and the graphics! I especially appreciate the interviews. The interview with Mr. Kasowitz, the interviews with the mothers of twins, the piece about women who build sukkahs, and the interview with the Shabbos goy were all memorable and keep me coming back for more. Keep up your great work! S.B. THE BORO PARK VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS. EMAIL: comments@thebpview.

Being able to sit with support is a critical step in your infant’s physical progress. Addressing a physical delay early on, can prevent future struggles like late walking and imbalance.

“Wait and see” isn’t always the right approach for your child. Often, early intervention plays a pivotal role in preventing further delays. Concerned about your child’s development? Give us a call to help you clarify if your worries are justified, and if we can help you get the services you need. Evaluations and sessions are scheduled at your convenience and at your location. We’re here to help master those early skills for later milestones!

“I knew exactly which plants could be eaten and which were dangerous, and was able to sustain myself” * * * * * Rav Yisrael Zev Gustman, zt”l, Rosh Yeshivah of Netzach Yisrael, had an interesting practice. He used to water the plants around the yeshivah himself. One of his talmidim was very curious about this, and gathered the courage to ask the Rosh Yeshivah why he never assigned this task to anyone else. “I feel sincere hakaras hatov to plants and flowers,” Rav Gustman said, as he began sharing his amazing personal experience. “When I was a dayan on the beis din of Hagaon Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzensky, zt”l, in Vilna, I sometimes took a stroll with him in the public park near the beis din building. “We used to walk and talk in learning. On one of these strolls, we walked deeper into the park than usual. To my surprise, Rav Chaim Ozer began to point out to me the different kinds of plants, and explained the benefits of each kind of grass and the properties of each kind of flower. I could not understand why we were having this unusual conversation… but out of deference to his kavod, I listened intently and didn’t ask why he was going into such detail about plant life. “A short while later, Europe was on fire with the onset of the Holocaust. I was forced to escape and I spent a long period hiding in the forest. Only then did I understand that conversation with Rav Chaim Ozer. It was only in that zechus that I remained alive! I knew exactly which plants could be eaten and which were dangerous, and was able to sustain myself on the plants that are edible and nutritious. “And that is why I feel a real debt of gratitude to plant life,” Rav Gustman concluded. * * * * * A person who receives good from another must display his appreciation — for his own self-development. It makes no difference if the “giver” was a domem, tzomei’ach, chai or medaber – inanimate object, vegetation, animal or human, or whether the gratitude will be appreciated. The point is the character workout for the recipient: If you benefitted, you must demonstrate your hakaras hatov. Moshe Rabbeinu could not be the one to hit the river because of his personal onus of hakaras hatov. It’s irrelevant that the river would be hit in either case; it was simply not in place for Moshe to engage in an act that was the opposite of gratitude.

Reb Moshe Yosef Friedlander led a resurgence of Kerestir’s former glory. In a personal interview, he shares his story, and the eyeopening yeshuos he has witnessed We are often surprised by how quickly change takes effect in our world today. “Just 15 years ago, this thing didn’t exist,” is a common comment in everyday conversations. Among those transformations that are hard to believe is the fact that less than 15 years ago, it was hard to find a meal, or much to eat at all, in the holy village of Kerestir! Yes, the place where the great Reb Shayeleh, zy”a once fed Yidden day and night, the ground where yeshuos were in abundance and food was equally plentiful, was barren until recently, with little chesed to speak of and none of the activities with which is bustles today. But today, Kerestir roars once again. Who is to credit for this remarkable revival? The answer, as readers may know, is Reb Moshe Yosef Friedlander, who many refer to as “Ish Kerestir.” Starting from the bottom, Moshe Yosef fought uphill to build the necessary infrastructure and champion a mission to return Kerestir to its former glory. Today, Reb Shayeleh’s Guesthouse is one of the biggest chesed centers on the globe. The complex is open 24 hours with round-the-clock amenities that include a beis medrash, mikvah, kitchen, dining room and more. On a recent evening, we sat down with Reb Moshe Yosef to hear more about his mission. He was naturally interrupted a couple of times by phone calls, all related to his chesed work and all of them answered with patience and dedication. But in between, we learned a lot about the man, his work, his continued motivation and his vision for the future.

WHAT IS YOUR CONNECTION WHAT WAS IT LIKE WHEN TOMyKERESTIR? YOU FIRST STARTED OUT? family has been bleeding Kerestir for generI was shocked by the demand that had been neations. My grandfather was a “shteeb mentch” by Reb Shayeleh and was later close to his children after his passing. In fact, my father was actually born in Kerestir. So this place is a part of my DNA.

WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO GET INVOLVED IN THIS UNDERTAKING? I would visit the tziyon of Reb Shayeleh frequently and always found it frustrating that there was no mikvah available to me before approaching that holy place. There was no food either at the time, and I would go and cook food in Reb Shayeleh’s house for myself and whoever else was around. Eventually, I realized that I have to do something about this, so I went and bought a property with the generous help of Reb Shayeleh’s grandchildren, the Landau family. That place would soon become the first structure of the now-acclaimed Reb Shayeleh’s Guest House complex.

glected for so long. That first night after we closed on the purchase, we opened our doors to serve dinner. It was Tuesday, Parshas Beshalach and I remember it vividly. I was expecting a handful of people to hopefully show up and we ended up having 60 Yidden. That’s when I first truly realized what had truly been lacking.

WHAT WAS THE IMPACT OFWell, THIS MOVE? I don’t need to tell you what the Village of Bodrogkeresztúr looks like today. The seeds we planted have grown beyond our wildest imaginations. But our impact has extended far beyond that. Today, there are many organizations performing all types of chesed in the name of the great Reb Shayeleh, but it wasn’t like this before. If you travel to kivrei tzaddikim anywhere these days, you find a warm Hachnasas Orchim and an open door to all. January 10, 2024

That too wasn’t around before this paradigm shift we were able to help bring about.

HOW HAS YOUR OWN MISSION EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS? It has grown beyond anyone’s wildest imaginations. There’s nothing a Yid can need in Kerestir that we don’t provide them — 24/7 and free of charge. Today, we have a large commercial kitchen cooking food that we serve in our dining room at all hours. We have a beis medrash hosting minyanim and learning without interruption. We provide necessary items for travelers and those coming to daven at the tziyon. But perhaps most importantly, we have built a fullfledged mikvah taharah that not only serves our community but draws Hungarian Jews from dozens of towns within driving distance. It’s a nonstop operation.

There was another Yid from Brooklyn who was here and took upon himself to be a Parnas Hayom so that his son, an older bachur, could find a shidduch. Three weeks later, I see him walking in with his wife. ‘What happened?’ I asked. And he tells me, “The Sunday after I got home, a shidduch was redt to my son and he just got engaged. We came to thank the tzaddik!” Just now, before I got here, an individual messaged me asking for my wire information. He had recently promised $1,000 to our guesthouse if he finds for his family an affordable, suitable house despite the difficult housing market. He called to follow through on this promise. Every day, I see another story. It’s mind boggling what we see even in this dark day and age.

HAVE YOU PERSONALLY EXPERIENCED ANY MOFSIM? I always tell people that the biggest miracle of Reb Shayeleh

is that we remain open and never have to turn a Yid away. How IT CAN’T BE EASY MANAGING SUCH we do it, I don’t know. But the tzaddik refuses to let us down. A LARGE CHESED NETWORK. I would be lying if I pretended otherwise. This is hard work. But every time I doubt whether I can continue, Reb Shayeleh HOW INDEED DO YOU sends me a sign from shamayim, mostly through a phone call from a Yid wanting to partner with our efforts as a way to con- COVER THE COSTS? nect to the tzaddik and merit a yeshua. It’s all through the generosity of our brothers around the world. Everything costs—the buildings, food, complete staff that includes mashgichim, overhead, services and the like. But the tzaddik never said no, and neither can we!

SPEAKING OF YESHUOS, THE STORIES ABOUT REB SHAYELEH ARE LEGENDARY TO THIS DAY. ARE THERE ANY STORIES I UNDERSTAND THAT YOU AGREED TO THIS INTERVIEW AHEAD OF A YOU CAN SHARE THAT YOU HAVE CAMPAIGN YOU ARE HOSTING? PERSONALLY WITNESSED? (Smiles.) Listen, I can fill your entire magazine with stories if you want. I’ll give you a few episodes I have been part of in just the recent weeks. I can even share the names with you, if you want. There was a Yid who came to visit a few weeks ago at a complete loss. He owed hundreds of thousands of dollars to a major entity and they were coming after him with everything they have. When he was here, he left a donation that will help serve other Yidden. On the way home he did his hishtadlus and sent off an email asking them whether they would be open to settling for a few hundred dollars—a fraction of a percent of the outstanding balance! The next thing he knows, he receives an email response that the settlement has been accepted!

Correct. We are about to launch a global campaign to support these massive efforts—Klal Yisroel’s efforts! Every donor will have an opportunity to send a kvitel to the tziyon and I have no doubt that they will see yeshuos in ways they could never imagine. Tainted Baby Formula Shipped to Israel Prompts Massive Recall

Rash of Moped Purse Snatchings Hits Brooklyn’s Jewish Communities

More than half a million cans of Nutramigen Hypoallergenic Infant Formula are being recalled after the discovery of a potentially deadly bacteria in a batch exported from the United States to Israel. Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition voluntarily recalled 675,030 cans of formula after some of the product was found to contain cronobacter sakazakii bacteria in mid-December during routine product sampling. While no cases of illness were

A pair of moped-riding thieves have been terrorizing Brooklyn residents, snatching purses and cruising off with their ill-gotten gains. Hamodia reported that the first incident took place on January 1, when two men attempted to steal a woman’s purse at the corner of Elmwood and McDonald Avenues. The woman was able to hold onto her bag, but a short time later, another woman had her purse stolen on 45th Street and 15th Avenue by two men on a moped whose descriptions matched that given by the first victim. A third also had her bag taken on McDonald and Webster Avenue by what appeared to be the same men. Moped thieves struck again on January 4, in the late afternoon, this time targeting one woman near Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights and another a short time later in Williamsburg. Local Shomrim patrols have been working closely with police to locate the perpetrators. Moped purse snatchings are, unfortunately, nothing new, with 22 taking place in Manhattan back in October, and multiple others staged in December. Women are being urged to remain vigilant whenever they are on the street, which includes maintaining a tight hold on their purses and keeping their jewelry hidden from view. But pocketbooks aren’t the only target of moped-riding thieves. A group of six individuals on mopeds converged on a man on a moped at the corner of 45th Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway on the afternoon of January 3, forcing him off his bike. The suspects chased their victim down with their mopeds as he fled the scene, beating him repeatedly when they caught up with him. A police officer who saw the incident attempted to chase down the suspects but was unable to catch them. The NYPD asked Shomrim to help them collect surveillance footage showing the incident and reportedly believe that the suspects may be related to another robbery that took place a week earlier on 60th Street.

reported, cronobacter can cause life-threatening infections, meningitis and bowel damage, with symptoms including poor feeding, irritability, jaundice, temperature changes, grunting breaths and abnormal movements. The Food and Drug Administration said that it has been testing batches of the product in the United States since December and has yet to find any traces of the bacteria. Because Nutramigen Hypoallergenic is a specialty formula for babies who cannot tolerate cow’s milk, it is believed that only limited stock of the product is still available for purchase, and that most, if not all of it, has already been consumed, with no adverse reactions reported.

Maimonides Expands Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Maimonides Medical Center has nearly doubled the size of its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, allowing the hospital to up the ante in providing world-class medical care to the tiniest patients. Expanding its NICU by more than 7,000 square feet and upping its total number of beds to 48, Maimonides will be better able to provide round-the-clock care to premature newborns as well as those who are born with compromised health. Maimonides held a ribbon cutting-ceremony for its new NICU on January 4, with top hospital officials joining in the festivities. In addition to being able to offer advanced procedures and provide round-the-clock coverage in high-risk cases, the new unit will have Angel Eye cameras at every bed, giving families the ability to see their infants remotely. “The expansion of our NICU at Maimonides is one step of many in our efforts to deliver top-notch care to our community,” said Ken Gibbs, President and CEO, Maimonides Health. “Families can rest assured their children will receive the best in health care technology and caring experts right near home.”

NYC Migrant Crisis Continues An executive order issued by New York City Mayor Eric Adams last week to limit the number of migrants arriving in his already overburdened city has taken on a new life, with creative attempts being made to settle more newcomers in and around the five boroughs. Adams attempted to gain control of the situation that has left New York City crumbling under financial and other burdens in its role as a sanctuary city. An executive order issued by the mayor on December 27 said that 32 hours’ notice would be required for the arrival of any busloads of migrants, with unloading allowed only between 8:30 a.m. and noon in one specific location. Intent on circumventing Adams’ carefully laid plans, bus companies began dropping off asylum-seekers at New Jersey train stations, and then putting them on trains heading into the Big Apple. The New York Post reported that New Jersey officials have responded to this latest tactic by having New Jersey Transit officers on hand to get migrants across the Hudson River quickly, 68

by putting them on trains to New York City. Over 1,000 asylumseekers made their way to New York by train over a period of just a few days last week. Desperately searching for ways to cover the cost of taking in more than 33,000 migrants who have been bused from Texas to New York, Adams sued seventeen charter bus companies last week. The mayor noted that bus companies were being paid millions of dollars by Texas over the past two years to transport the migrants, accusing them of acting in bad faith to transport migrants to Democrat-run cities and saying that they should be responsible to cover the $700 million cost of caring for the asylumseekers. According to the lawsuit, the bus companies were paid $1,650 for every person they transported, a figure that is five times the price of a regular ticket from Texas to New York City.

NYC Hospitals Reissue Mask Mandate The annual uptick in winter illnesses has had New York City Health and Hospitals rolling out mask mandates once again at 11 hospitals in the five boroughs. The New York Post reported that the return of the dreaded masks is in response to an increase in COVID, flu and RSV cases and applies in city-run hospitals as well as community health centers and nursing homes. NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan said that the mandate was intended to prevent staffing shortages. “My message to New Yorkers is that it’s not inevitable that you’re just gonna fall victim to this,” said Vasan. “There are tools and strategies that we can take to keep ourselves and our families safe.” An editorial that ran in the Post on January 5 described the mandate as “idiotic,” noting that research has shown that masks make little to no difference in preventing the spread of COVID, flu and similar illnesses. “True, hospitals are filled with patients who may be at greater risk, and masking might well be appropriate in certain cases,” wrote the Post. “But it’s folly to think a broad masking mandate will make much of [a] difference, given the findings that show essentially the opposite. Doctors should be given wide discretion and remember – above all else – to keep their bottom line oath: do no harm.”

ome days, Fraidy’s hair fell with a stubborn limpness, and the whole day somehow felt sleepier. But the morning after the anniversary party, she nudged her ponytail a bit higher up, giving her hair a satisfying bounce. It wasn’t only her hair. As her bus pulled up, she felt that bounce in her gait as well, and she strode toward the bus as though there was nothing in life to bring her spirit down. And in a way, there wasn’t, mainly because whatever could have brought her spirit down already had. By the time she’d finished crying her eyes out the night before, her mind had cleared out from any thought, and she’d collapsed into bed, completely spent. She’d woken with a start sometime during the night, and it had

all come flooding back. The heaviness of the scrapbook in her hand, the clamminess of her palm as she gripped the mic, Chevi’s low murmur, W-w-w-w-we’re, you mean? She hadn’t cried again — there were no tears left to cry — she just sat hunched over in bed for a long time, trembling with fear. But when morning rolled around, the fear had dissipated and one thought dominated her mind. I shouldn’t have run away. As she pulled on her uniform and made her bed, she was overcome by a bizarre desire to go back to SpecTac and redo those moments. She pictured herself standing in front of her grandparents, feeling Chevi’s breath in her ear as her cousin mimicked her stutter, and smiling sweetly in her face, completely unbothered. No hammering in her chest, no short

Chevi completely ignored her all morning. Well, she had every reason to. But that didn’t mean that Fraidy had to squirm in her presence. At recess, when Shevy Schwartz asked her how the party had been, when they were standing only three feet away from Chevi, Fraidy merely threw a fleeting glance at her cousin before answering, “It was soooo much fun. My grandparents were totally shocked.” And she went on to describe the food and the “insaaaane” VRs. By lunchtime, Chevi appeared to be a little less uptight. She still made sure not to look in her direction, but Fraidy really didn’t care. If Chevi wanted to ignore her, that was her problem, not Fraidy’s. Fraidy was the lunch monitor that week, so she was kept busy throughout lunch, running to the kitchen when the class needed more plates or when a girl asked for ketchup. She was bringing Brachi Fried a container of butter when she heard Sari Bauer talking to Chevi. “I haven’t heard anything about your house in ages. You still didn’t move in?” “Yeah,” Dassi Guttman chimed in. “Weren’t you supposed to move for Pesach?” “We were,” Chevi said. “It just… got delayed.” “Delayed, sure,” Sari said. “You keep saying that. I bet you’re not even moving at all. You just made up a whole story about your big, fancy house. It’s not even true.” Fraidy stood still, clutching the container of butter. “I didn’t make up any stories,” Chevi said hotly. “We are moving. It’s just taking longer than it was supposed to.” “Months and months longer?” Dassi asked. “Yeah, sure, maybe you’ll move in a hundred years from now. Maybe your grandchildren will enjoy your hutrongous” — she drew air quotes — “playroom.” By that time, all the girls around them had stopped talking and were following every word. Fraidy saw Chevi’s face turn pink. She muttered something, but nobody heard her.

Tziporah Meyer, who was supposedly Chevi’s best friend, pushed a bottle of milk aside and made a face at Chevi. “Hello, we’re tired of all your lies,” she said. “Seeing is believing, and as long as there’s no house to see, there’s nothing to believe.” Sari snickered, and a bunch of girls giggled. Something erupted in Fraidy’s chest. Without thinking, she pounded the butter down on the table. “There is a house, and you can very well believe her,” she said assertively. “Construction always gets delayed, that’s just how it goes. It’s sooooo normal.” She could feel Chevi’s astounded eyes, and she quickly locked her gaze on Tziporah to avoid looking at her cousin. “Yeah, sure, how would you know?” Tziporah asked. “Did you ever renovate a house? Big talker.” “I know very well,” Fraidy said smugly. And finally, she allowed herself to hesitantly turn to look at her cousin, and a small smile rose on her face. “I know, because my father is an architect.” *****

“I want to talk to you today before you leave.” Riva’s blood chilled. She’d just spent twenty minutes at her boss’s desk, reviewing a bunch of client accounts, and she’d been about to return to her desk to address everything they’d discussed when he threw the words at her. There went her concentration. There was no greater torture in her work life than the suspense surrounding what was on her boss’s mind. Can’t you just talk now and get it over with? No, he couldn’t. Prolonging a worker’s suffering was one of Mr. Gabioff’s greatest pleasures. He wouldn’t drop a hint about what he wanted to discuss, instead allowing her imagination to spin horrific scenes, all of which ended with her curt dismissal. She tried to put the looming meeting out of her mind, but if she managed to divert her attention from that, memories of the previous night filled her mind instead. The noise of the party. The people and the chatter. Lani’s surprise about the food.

Fraidy’s nerve-wracking disappearance. And finally, Yaakov’s bleak news. She was also consumed with worry about Fraidy. She’d looked pretty okay in the morning, to Riva’s surprise, and hadn’t insisted on staying home or anything. But how would she fare in Chevi’s presence for so many hours? How was Chevi going to treat her after the previous night’s drama? She found herself whispering tefillos throughout the day. Hashem, give her courage, help her be strong, help these girls make shalom and emerge from this ordeal without any scars. As she prayed, she thought about herself as well. The incident with Fraidy had cemented her conviction that the time had come to leave Kleenup. But now, with Yaakov’s income from Bleich abruptly cut off, the way out seemed farther out of reach than ever. Mr. Gabioff didn’t leave the office for even a minute that day, and by early afternoon, Riva was sure her head was going to explode from the heavy, strained silence that permeated the office. Not complete silence, though, because on top of Mr. Gabioff being so claustrophobically around, he was also in one of his moods. “I’m sick and tired of hagglers!” he shouted at Adina when she asked him if she could offer one of her clients a better rate. “If someone doesn’t like our pricing, let them hire a different cleaning company. Scrooges. They’ll go get quotes from ten different companies, and when they discover that our proposal was lower than all the others, they’ll come back and beg me for a crew.” He pounded his fist on his desk, and the vegetable salad he’d been eating jumped into the air and rained down over his papers. He muttered a few choice words and groped around for napkins. “I won’t put up with it,” he barked. “Tell them to have a nice day, and if they call again, tell them to lose our number.” And then, while he shoveled bits of peppers and tomatoes off his desk, he hissed in his habitual echo, “Tell them to lose our number. To lose our number.” Riva eyed Adina furtively. She knew exactly what was going through her colleague’s mind. Do you really want me to say

all that? Can you, like, maybe, tell it to the client yourself? Because he didn’t actually want to lose the business. If Adina turned them away, she would never hear the end of it. Which left her in a position of being bound to say the wrong thing, no matter what she’d say. This is absurd. It was a crime to work for such a person, an inexcusable martyrdom. Riva was overcome with envy of Shuli, who’d had the courage to escape. It was only some unexplained weakness — and the desperate reliance on Mr. Gabioff’s generous paychecks — that kept each of them showing up at work day in and day out. By the time Riva approached Mr. Gabioff to hear what he wanted to talk about, her nerves were a complete mess. “Ah, so yes, Mrs. Stroh.” He didn’t ask her to come out to the hallway to talk, but instead lowered his voice to a near-whisper as she sat fidgeting in the chair on the other side of his desk. “So I really don’t want you talking to anybody in the office about this,” he started. Riva’s heart jerked. Instinctively, she hated whatever it was that her boss was about to tell her. From his execrable mood, he’d switched into kind mode, and he was going to offer her some benevolent lenience yet again. She didn’t want to hear it. She couldn’t handle the obligation of being grateful to him. Any favor he offered would land her in psychological debt. He scanned the room to see if anyone was listening before lowering his voice another notch. “I got the impression that you weren’t satisfied with your last raise,” he told her. “And I want you to know that I value your work and appreciate your loyalty to the company. I already discussed this with my accountant, and Mr. Lauriel will apply the change to this week’s payroll.” He gave a little tap on his desk and stretched his lips into a peculiar grin. “It’ll be a fifteen percent increase,” he said. “How does that sound?” TO BE CONTINUED…

RICE BOWLS These bowls have become popular recently, and for good reason. There are so many flavors to play around with and so many toppings to choose from. You can use the following as a guide to create your own. Prepare your family’s favorite chicken, toppings and dressings, and set up the food buffetstyle. Your family can choose exactly what they want, and the little ones will feel as if they made their own dinner.

PERFECT WHITE RICE This is my favorite way to cook white rice. It’s the most basic recipe, and it comes out perfect every time. I like to use my rice as a blank canvas so I don’t add seasoning. Feel free to add seasoning according to your family’s preferences.

TOPPING IDEAS

INGREDIENTS 2

cups extra long grain white rice

4

cups water

2

tsp. table salt

2

tsp. oil

D IR EC T I O N S 1. Combine all ingredients in a small pot. 2. Stir once, and bring to a boil. 3. Cover the pot, and let the rice simmer for 15 minutes.

Avocado

Sautéed mushrooms

Sautéed onions

Crispy fried onions

Roasted sweet potato

Broccoli

Scallions

Chickpeas

Roasted corn (Either use corn on the cob, or drain a can of corn, spread it on a baking tray and broil for a few minutes until charred.)

4. Once cooked, fluff the rice with a fork.

DRESSING IDEAS My favorite dressing combination for a rice bowl is pesto mayonnaise and jalapeño mayonnaise. I buy them ready-made at the store, which means one less thing to prepare. Here are some great flavored sauces to add to your next rice bowl dinner: •

Pesto mayonnaise

Garlic mayonnaise

Honey mustard

Jalapeño mayonnaise

here is wonder and awe, along with curiosity, magic and discovery, at every zoo, all over the world. Visiting a zoo doesn’t require much preparation. Just pack some snacks, grab appropriate gear for the weather, and get ready to explore Hashem’s most magnificent creations. Things weren’t always like this, though. The option of seeing so much fauna in one location didn’t always exist. Mankind’s knowledge and view of wildlife used to be limited to whichever furry, fuzzy or feathered creatures roamed your particular region. Anything else was exotic and largely unknown. When, and how, did that change? The answer to that question is complicated and goes back thousands of years. “Zoo” is a shortened word for the term “zoological garden,” but way before those came into being, great rulers and emperors had the forerunner of the modern zoo: the menagerie. Human beings have always been fascinated and amazed by the power, beauty and wonder of the animal kingdom. Remains of multiple animals in various regions suggest that the first menageries (defined as places where animals were maintained and kept for the purpose of exhibition) had many varied species, including those not typically found in those lands.

Signs of the First Zoo in the World It wasn’t that long ago that archeologists and scientists discovered the site of the world’s oldest zoo. The lucky winner, whose claim to fame is recorded in the Guiness Book of World Records, was in Hierakonpolis, Egypt. This city was one of the largest and busiest cities of its time, possibly even before the Yidden went down to Mitzrayim. Thousands of animal bones of an estimated 112 creatures were buried under the sands of this ancient city. The unearthed remains were of many animals: bones of a baboon, an elephant, a leopard, gazelles, antelopes, multiple cats and dogs, crocodiles, hyenas, foxes, hartebeest, ibexes, hippos, wild cows, and even aurochs — an extinct species of wild ox. According to the researchers, the number of remains, as well as the variety of species, clearly proves that Hierakonpolis was home to a unique gathering of wildlife unlike any other discovered in the region. As one group of American researchers, headed by Dr. Renee Friedman, wrote about the area: “The large, 100

dangerous, and rare animals acquired, apparently at great effort, make explanations of the place as simply a butchery site or feasting area untenable.” Animals in early menageries were not well-treated, and the bones bear signs of various kinds of injuries and abuse. Partially healed fractures in multiple places and wounds related to being tied up were in abundance. We’ve come a long way since the days that animals’ well-being was ignored for the benefit of their human masters (though one does sometimes wonder if mankind has gone a little too far). Today, zoos are masters at conservation and take exceptionally good care of their inhabitants, with specialized diets, medical care, tailored habitats, loving attention, treats, and even surgery offered to the animals under their care. But there was a long road to travel before the world reached that point.

Monarchs, Rulers and Royals Jumping forward in history, let’s move on to the early zoos of Europe. These private menageries were owned by kings and emperors as symbols of wealth, strength and power. What better way to feel important than owning and controlling fearsome lions, dangerous snakes and terrifying tigers? Exotic animals were often gifted by diplomatic envoys. Emperor Charlemagne, who ruled the Roman empire in the 8th century, received gifts such as elephants from monarchs in distant lands, including Asia and Africa. In England, William the Conqueror owned a menagerie at his manor in Woodstock. His son, Henry I, maintained and even grew the collection of animals in the 1100s. Reportedly, the menagerie included owls, a porcupine, lions, lynxes and camels. The royal menagerie grew during the 13th century, with the gifts of leopards from EmperWhat better way or Frederick II, an elephant from France (one can only to feel important assume it was a regifted elephant), and even a white bear than owning from Norway. Czech monarchs owned and controlling lions as early as 1125, as well as some had other exotic creatures, such as giant snakes. In fearsome lions, the mid-16th century, these menageries grew exponendangerous tially and hosted an incredible variety of animals, given snakes and their time and place in history. There were antelopes, terrifying tigers? gazelles, camels, many kinds of exotic birds, cheetahs, and even a great ape. For generations, these prized collections were private and were not usually shared with the wider public, with few exceptions. British royal menageries finally opened their doors to the public during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I in the 16th century. At first, there was no admission fee, though in later years, visitors were asked to bring small animals to feed the lions to offset the cost of maintaining the menagerie. For hundreds of years, royal menageries were the only places one could see wildlife from other parts of the world. The animals were generally kept in tight confines, with cages and small, enclosed yards 102

for exercise. In 1663, the menagerie at Versailles opened. It featured several unique designs, which made it stand out from other menageries. The shape enabled people to view the wildlife from a central pavilion, with exotic animals kept in enclosures in a ring around it. The idea caught on, and other European rulers copied the concept.

Zoological Gardens Galore As the world moved into the 18th century, it became more common for rulers to share views of their animal collections with a wider audience. Toward the end of the century, the first zoos were established, as the term “zoological garden” and the scientific study of animals began in earnest. With the Age of Enlightenment beginning in 1815 came a new perspective on menageries. Researchers began studying animals methodically, and it made sense to collect the creatures into specific locations for this purpose. Animals were sorted into categories, and their enclosures were no longer completely random. The first zoo created solely for the purpose of science was the London Zoo in 1828. For over 20 years, the only people allowed inside were members of the London Zoological Society. When funding the zoo became difficult, its doors were finally opened to the public in 1847. The First Zoo in the US In the United States, the first zoo was the Central Park Zoo, built in 1860. It was still called a menagerie, however, and it wasn’t until December 1934 that its name was changed to “Central Park Zoo.” The zoo has an interesting beginning: An abandoned baby bear cub was found tied to a tree in the park in 1859. People flocked to see it, and the following year, a monkey was also left at the park. Soon people began bringing other animals as donations, and cranes, a peacock, and goldfish were among the first animals to join the bear and monkey. Bald eagles joined as well, and by 1864, the park had over 400 animals. The menagerie at Central Park was immensely popular, and by 1873, it boasted an annual 2.5 million visitors. The Central Park Zoo was followed by the Philadelphia Zoo in 1874. This zoo actually claims to be the oldest zoo in America, based on the fact that its charter and zoological society were set up in 1859, before the one in Central Park. Practically, however, Central Park Zoo already had animals for over ten years before the Philadelphia Zoo opened its doors. It took until 1907 for animal enclosures to shift away from the menagerie-style cages and

small yards. In zoos across the world, efforts were made to create areas for each animal based on their natural habitats, and moats began replacing the bars being used to keep the animals contained. In 1929, when the Great Depression began, things looked bad for zoos. With barely enough food to feed people, animals’ futures seemed bleak. But during the 1930s, President Franklin D. Roosevelt put the New Deal programs into effect. One of those programs was the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The WPA provided jobs to millions of Americans without any particular skills. They did a lot of work for the public, like building roads and other public spaces — such as zoos. Many zoos were built, renovated and maintained by the WPA during those years. In fact, resources were poured into zoos, which ended up flourishing during the years of the Great Depression. The federal programs enabled local governments to build new zoological parks, complete unfinished ones, and fix up those that were outdated. The Central Park Zoo, San Francisco Zoo and Prospect Park Zoo were just some of the many zoos saved by FDR’s New Deal. Zoos continued to improve in many ways. One notable and brilliant concept was that of the “nocturnal house.” People wanted to view the creatures of the night — but would prefer to do so during the day, please. The Bristol Zoo was the first to find a solution. Built in 1954, their nocturnal house is the oldest in the world. In these dark houses, only dim white or red lights are on during the day, so the snakes, lizards, and other nocturnal animals and reptiles are active during visiting hours. At night, bright lights go on to simulate daylight, and the nighttime creatures rest. Special enclosures for various kinds of small animals also developed, including aquariums for aquatic life forms. Certain animals found in extreme climates, such as penguins, live in specially designed enclosures where the climate can be artificially controlled. Some zoos allow visitors to walk through exhibits of gentle animals, giving people the opportunity to see animals close up in a relatively natural setting. And, of course, there are safari parks, where from the safety of a vehicle, people flock to see incredible creatures — strong, wondrous and nearly free. All throughout history, people have been fascinated by animals. In zoos the world over, the next generation of children ogle at the beasts within, and discover the wonder of creation. 106

Going to the zoo is a fun activity that most people enjoy, but when the zoo comes to you it’s not as fun. Living in suburban areas can sometimes feel like you’re basically living in the wild. It’s not rare to see many different animals strolling around like they own the place, making cars and people stop to give them the right of way. But when they get really close to home is when the fascination goes down a few notches, especially if the animal or rodent in question is one that is notorious for causing damage to property. Here, residents of the suburbs share their wildest animal stories.

UNWELCOME

VISITORS

The last thing you want to find when you come home after a long, fun summer in the mountains are some uninvited guests hanging out under the shed. Earlier this year, as the Kohns were unpacking from a fun summer in their bungalow colony, they were greeted by a large raccoon sitting on the cover of their trash can. Once they got over the shock, they grabbed sticks and brooms and tried shooing the raccoon away. To their surprise, the raccoon stayed put and stared them placidly in the face.

“We called a professional who came and put down some walking by! “Our raccoon saga is mostly over,” Mrs. Kohn says with a traps,” Mrs. Kohn recalls. “Apparently, raccoons really like tuna, and, of all things, marshmallows. The animal control of- half-laugh, half-sigh, “but there’s still one raccoon that we can’t seem to get into a trap. We think it might be the original racficer laid that as bait in the traps, and we waited.” The next morning, they were greeted by the sight of one rac- coons that we trapped first; raccoons are extremely intelligent, coon in the trap, and animal control came to take it away. The and once they get caught in a trap, they won’t fall for it again. animal control guy released it about a 30-minute drive from Thankfully, it’s winter now and the raccoon is hibernating; I their house, with the illogical reasoning that raccoons can guess we’ll have to see what happens when summer comes!” find their way back anywhere within a range of 30 miles. But their saga didn’t end there. Two weeks later One Yom Tov morning they woke they were surprised by the same fat raccoon sitting on their garbage cans. That’s when they reup to the welcome sight of a alized that they might have multiple raccoons on their property. Sukkos was fast approaching, so they called animal control again, but were unable raccoon in the cage to arrange for someone to come and lay another trap. They continued trying, until one day they heard shouts from next door, where the raccoons had made himself cozy in their neighbor’s sukkah. That’s when Mr. Kohn decided to lay a trap next to the trash cans on his own instead of waiting for the experts. A few days before Sukkos, the Kohns were relieved to see that something was inside the trap. But it wasn’t the raccoon; it was a skunk. Luckily, an animal control officer arrived and covered the trap, hooked the cage onto a long stick, and released the skunk next to the woods. Mr. Kohn resignedly set the trap again, and they continued waiting. One Yom Tov morning they woke up to the welcome sight of a raccoon in the cage, but they soon realized that maybe it wasn’t such a welcome sight after all. Since it was Yom Tov, they weren’t able to do anything with the raccoon, so for the rest of Sukkos they had a trap with a raccoon inside sitting in their yard. Must’ve been quite a sight for people 114

SCARECROW:

SNAKE EDITION

Was it just me or did we all hear that bats will fly toward our hair and get stuck and tangled in it? I always covered my hair with my hands when I saw a bat outside. Even though I’ve learned that it’s a myth (and it is: Bats hang upside down, so they drop down in the air before they start flying, which is what might make it look like they’re heading for your head), I still don’t want to be in the vicinity of a bat. But one lucky family learned that they had bats in their attic when they noticed droppings. At first, they thought they were from mice, but they were later identified as bat droppings. I’m not sure which is worse. “We called down animal control, and they closed off our attic,” Bassy Greenberg tells me, “but then we did some more research and learned that bats are scared of snakes.” Snakes are one of bats’ predators, in addition to owls, hawks and racoons, which makes them one of the bat’s most feared animals. The Greenbergs purchased a plastic snake and wrapped it around their porch railing, and nary a bat has been seen since. So if you pass a house with a snake nonchalantly lounging around on the porch, now you know why.

They thought they were from mice, but they were later identified as bat droppings. I’m not sure which is worse

FEED THE WILDLIFE

Imagine being woken up in the morning by strange banging sounds, only to look outside and see wild male turkeys headbutting your black car because they think their reflection is a rival turkey. That’s what the Stein family experienced for a few long months. “The thing with turkeys is that they have huge egos,” Mrs. Stein says, “and they would refuse to budge. We would yell and chase after them, but they just continued strutting around like they owned the place. Eventually my husband tried pouring cups of water out of the window, and that made them reluctantly walk away from the car.” Their car was full of scratches in no time, but the Stein couldn’t figure out how to get the turkeys off their property for good. “We found out later that the turkeys were sticking around because our next-door neighbor was feeding them,” Mrs. Stein says ruefully. “Once he moved away, the turkeys pretty much disappeared, probably to find a new person who’d feed them.”

“We would yell and chase after them, but they just continued strutting around like they owned the place”

DRUNK

GROUNDHOGS Groundhogs are probably some one of the cuter rodents we see running around, but they are infamous for the damage they can do. Groundhogs dig under practically anything and create a myriad of tunnels underground, which makes it hard to keep them out of… everywhere. The Feders recently dealt with an extended family of groundhogs running around their property. “They were chewing up all the wiring for our sprinkler and camera systems, and we kept having to replace them,” Mrs. Feder tells me. The Feders were advised to break glass bottles and throw them into the entrance of the tunnels so the groundhogs would be deterred and leave, but groundhogs are extremely hardworking and clean animals. Somehow, they kept cleaning away the glass, and continued sticking around. A few days before Pesach, Mrs. Feder was washing a window upstairs when she noticed her youngest son carrying two bottles of beer outside. “I called out to my son, ‘Where are you going with that beer?’ He turned around and said, ‘Let them get drunk!’” Mrs. Feder laughs. “He knew we were supposed to be putting bottles into the tunnels, so he took the beer, which had been in the chometz box, and was going to put the bottles into

The joke on the block for the next few weeks was that if anyone sees groundhogs dancing, it’s because they’re drunk from the beer 120

the tunnel. The joke on the block for the next few weeks was that if anyone sees groundhogs dancing, it’s because they’re drunk from the beer,” she says, chuckling. The Feders also enlisted the help of an exterminator who gave them poison to set at the entrance of the tunnels, but that didn’t seem to do the trick either. Earlier this year, the family ended up removing their entire shed, under which most of the groundhogs and tunnels seemed to be, as the damage it was causing far outweighed the benefit of having a shed. “For now we don’t know if it helped since groundhogs hibernate in the winter,” Mrs. Feder says. “Once the weather warms up, we’ll know if we still have them around.”

HOW TO KEEP

THEM AWAY 1. Close off easy access points. If you have a gate around your property or garden, make sure there aren’t any holes or loose points in the gate that allow animals to sneak in. Raccoons love going under decks and porches where it’s dark and quiet, so put some kind of mesh wiring or gate around the underside of a deck to prevent access. Also, make sure not to leave anything they can climb on near gates, trash cans or the like. 2. Use light and sound. Raccoons especially are known to be attracted to warm, quiet, dark places. To keep them away, make your yard the opposite of that. Use bright lights in the dark corners, have as much foot traffic as possible, and make your yard very unwelcoming to discourage them from sticking around. 3. One man’s trash... is an animal’s dinner. Raccoons are known as “trash pandas,” as the trash bins will probably be the first place they try to get into in order to forage for food, but they’re far from the only ones. To keep animals out of your garbage cans, make sure to always close the bags tightly and close the cover on the bins. You can also invest in heavy-duty trash bins, so the covers are harder for animals to open. 4. Professional help. If you notice some unwelcome visitors that are refusing to leave, the best course of action would be to call in the professionals. They often have specialized traps and bait and know how far away from your property to release them so they don’t find their way back.

CHANA GLUCK

They’ve come! By the dozen or score or hundreds; they approach in droves, armed to the teeth with wings, tails and too many legs for comfort. And when they invade a country en masse, there are so many of them that no one can shame you with, Mammele, who’s bigger, you or that creature?

Spotted Lanternflies in the U.S. Rats and Mice in Bnei Brak Bedbugs in France

Also known as Chinese bugs — have you seen them? Or rather, have you not, and if so, can I move in under that rock with you? Educated mama that I am, I first called these invaders by a convoluted mix of their official name Spotted Lanternfly and a major characteristic of theirs: red. So red lanterns it was, until my son said his cheder yard was full of the creatures, but they’re called Chinese bugs. This past summer I ran around, alternatively getting spooked nearly witless by the flying pests and begging one and all for validation. “Do you also have red lanterns on your porch all the time? Yeah, Chinese bugs. They fly at you! They’re horrible!” Until the bugs resurface in the spring, the least we can do is get educated about these invaders. Then we can face them tremulously as we aim spray bottles of vinegar at them and say, “I know everything about you, and therefore you will drop dead at my command right now.” And proceed to spray as the creatures snootily lift their red wings and fly at you, not dead at all. 130

EMIGRATION EN MASSE From whence you come, you cunningly gliding creatures? From China, of course, believed to have come on a stone shipment back in 2012. Like many other invasive insects, they weren’t found immediately (why would they? It would have ruined the whole current story), and a scant collection of insects doesn’t really deserve a blaring headline. For

these creatures to come to infamy, the world had to be overtaken by storm. The first official discovery of the spotted immigrants from China took place in Berks County, Pennsylvania, in 2014. Not the best of flyers, these creatures then utilized their excellent hitchhiking skills by sneaking into travel machines like trains, cars, trucks and planes. That’s how they hitched and hopped their way across the Mid-Atlantic, creeping out at least a dozen states on the East Coast and in the Midwest including New Jersey,

UP CLOSE My family attempted an orchard pick this past Chol Hamoed, and I say attempted because our efforts at wholesome enjoyment were marred by the hordes of lanternflies spread all over the orchard. While my son begged to end the trip now, we got to see the invasion up close. The flies were all over the place, merrily gliding from tree to tree as us puny mortals ducked in fright. I asked an orchard employee about their plans for pesticides, and she shrugged with a halfsmile and said that they were trying their best and hoped they could get rid of the egg masses the bugs lay during the fall.

Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, Indiana and Ohio, strengthening their numbers mightily until they became the full-fledged citizens bloc they seem to have aimed to be.

FOES OF FRUITFUL Come 2023, the lanternflies’ grand entrance into areas of New York State became a hot news item. In the spring, citizens were urged to smash them on sight. By the time summer was in full swing, so were the sightings of these creeps in many a yard and definitely orchard, because in addition to their firm favorite, the tree of heaven weed native to Pennsylvania, the flies feed on the sap of 70 different trees with a marked preference for fruitgrowing numbers. If you want a silver lining, these pests are not harmful to humans or animals. The other side of the coin, though, is the harm they bring to the trees and vines they feed on. Their sap-sucking mouthparts create openings in the trees that are the perfect size for pathogens to roll right in, and a large group of lanternflies sucking on a tree will also significantly weaken it. 132

LOWER DIGITS IN HOT SPOTS While Pennsylvania’s been an early host of the invaders and New Jersey’s suffered a suffocating infestation, numbers in both states were down this year. Some experts say that the lower numbers in Pennsylvania are a result of the flies simply exhausting the local food supply — their favorite, the tree of heaven — and moving on to greener pastures. Since the tree of heaven is an invasive plant, the state is in the process of eradicating this weed, whose roots of higher sugar content attract lanternflies and give them their peppy energy. Experts are also in agreement that just because some places seem to be having an off-year doesn’t mean the flies have left for good. Plants can recover, and so can the lanternfly population. Bottom line is that stamping them out on site and scraping egg masses is still the best thing to do. Flies, flee for your lives!

These bugs also secrete what’s called honeydew, which a sticky, sugary substance that turns into a breeding ground for black, sooty mold. These black patches, in turn, prevent light from reaching the affected leaves, reducing photosynthesis and further weakening the plant.

EGG MASS, AWAY! Now that the bugs have largely died out in the cold, we can both breathe easy and take the opportunity to grab gloves and alcohol and do some hishtadlus to reduce the new batch come spring. Egg masses of lanternflies can be found on any hard outdoor surface including plastic, wood and metal. Look out for them on tree trunks and branches — especially the undersides of them — and on rocks, lawn furniture, and anything, really, outdoors. The masses look like grayish splotches of mud or putty and measure around an inch long. Find them and scrape them into resealable bags that contain rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer because you want to make sure these masses never hatch. (Anything the size and shape of a credit card is a great scraper, by the way.) The bad news is that since lanternflies lay a bunch of their darling masses high up in the trees, removing only what’s within reach may not eliminate them completely. On the flipside, because each egg mass boasts up to 50 eggs, exult in the amount of lanternflies you’ve eradicated in one fell scrape!

Personally, I didn’t believe I’d ever feel better about Chinese bugs, what with my Texas-sized phobia of them, but when I heard about rats in Bnei Brak, Ima’le! I counted my blessings loud and fervent. What attracts these pests to a city, you ask? Every live creature has instincts that help it locate its needs for survival. Some need open air and space along with their food. Rodents, being as small as they are, need shelter to protect them

from larger animals and from the elements. Fun fact: The only truly rat-free place in the world would be Antarctica. Go ahead and relocate if you don’t need people, either! Big cities, inhabited by people who use food and water, dispose of trash, and live close together, offer much in the way of what a rodent needs. They’ll feast on anything left out, but among their favorites are peanut butter and chocolate.

Why they always caricature mice with huge pieces of holey cheese is anyone’s guess. Rats and mice absolutely love trash — the perfect combo of food and shelter. They’ll party away on the trash itself and burrow cozily in its receptacles for warmth and safety. They’ll also run to water found in dripping pipes, pet bowls, leaking sprinklers and fountains. Rodents will go anywhere that’s easy for them to enter, which can be a crack or hole no larger than a quarter- or half-inch in circumference, and something the average home will have lots of: roof vents, crawl spaces, under garage doors, and areas around pipes and vents. Aiiiii!

ROAMING ITS STREETS Bnei Brak has summered in fear this year, with some toddlers, children and an elderly man suffering injuries from rat bites. In fact, Bnei Brak residents have said that this summer they feared rats more than potential terrorist attacks (although this com134

parison is rather off-color this side of October 7). Sifrei Torah and seforim, too, have suffered desecration as rats gnawed on them back in June. This rodent infestation was linked to excavation work done for Bnei Brak’s light rail. All that digging may have hustled the rats out from their underground burrows, leaving them to encounter a city with a plethora of food, water and shelter. The rats grew fat as they fearlessly roamed houses, streets and even kindergartens — scaring even city cats! The rat issue spun the local municipality into a rightful tizzy, and they outlined a plan that included increased cleaning, massive pest control and continuous waste removal from yards of houses. “There is no magic formula,” they say. There was also talk of replacing open garbage cans with hidden ones, scattering traps and contaminated food, increasing awareness of proper garbage disposal, as well as additional measures to eradicate the scourge. While news about the extent of Bnei Brak’s infestation now is sketchy, being overshadowed with the fearful state of affairs in the country, I dearly hope the rats are well on the way to being eradicated!

Rats love big cities, and The City That Never Sleeps is no exception. Lest you think rat struggles remain on the other side of the ocean, be aware of the latest estimated rat census in NYC: three million rats (though Chicago still remains the undisputed rat capital of the States). Recent aggressive treatment of the problem has been carbon-monoxide pumped into rat burrows, which put them to sleep before they suffocate. But without better trash disposal, says veteran exterminator Matt Deodato, the rats “ain’t going anywhere. We could wipe out every rat in New York City. Give it a year and they’ll be right back.” Here’s to hoping they won’t.

“Good night, sleep tight, don’t let the bedbugs bite!” Well, in Paris they do, and I wonder if her residents are following the next lines of the above ditty by “smacking them black and blue.” Paris is the lap of all things glitter and couture, which also means it is the proud owner of the title “world’s most-visited city.” And travel is the number-one source of bedbugs. With travelers often being none the wiser, bedbugs will hop along for the ride on people, clothing, luggage or other belongings. And with nary a thanks for the trip, they’ll settle into their new accommodations with a happy sigh. According to ANSES, the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety, “It’s mainly due to the movement of people… that people stay in short-term accommodations and bring back bedbugs in their suitcase or luggage.” But Paris has always been famous. What’s with the bedbugs now? ANSES reports further that the uptick in bedbug infestations are due to the rise in travel (which we’re 138

The Boro Park View

familiar with in an antsy, post-Covid world) and the increasing resistance of bedbugs to insecticides, which leaves many a hoity-toity traveler at the mercy of those superbugs.

SNUG AS A BUG IN A RUG Although ridding one’s home of bedbugs is best left to professionals, care can be taken to avoid being infested with the

apple-seed-sized creatures in the first place. Bedbugs will mostly visit places with a high in-and-out traffic of nighttime guests, so when traveling, be mindful of the following: • Hard-cased luggage is a plus, as the bugs find it harder to latch onto a smooth surface than fibrous fabrics. • Don’t place your suitcase directly onto your bed when unpacking; that’s where the bedbugs most

likely are if you’ve brought them along. Use a luggage rack or keep the case close to the door. • Research shows that bedbugs prefer dirty laundry to clean laundry, so it’s best to keep dirty laundry separate and knotting the bag each time something is added. • Comfy creatures that they are, bedbugs also prefer heat, so keep the room cool at night. • When you’re back home, you’d do well to unpack far away from the bedroom and check every corner of your suitcase for bugs. Then wash every article of clothing, even those that remained unworn, in the hottest cycle its label permits.

Wishing all bedbugs a bon voyage, far away from society!

HAVOC BY HEADLINE? What’s been going on in Paris sounds similar to my own reaction to pests sometimes: kid tells mom there’s a pest. Mom must validate kid and say that’s right, there’s a pest, how awful! Chances are that mom is really afraid as she tries on macho for size and steps delicately into the fray.

EXCITING NEWS! FOR RESIDENTS OF LINDEN, ROSELLE AND UNION

LINDEN FOOD BASKET every Wednesday

Enter the reaction of higher-ups in the French government. Deputy Mayor of Paris, Emmanuel Gregoire, has issued media statements like, “No one is safe. You can catch them anywhere and bring them home, and not detect them in time until they have multiplied and spread.” Well, thank you for that reassurance, mayor! According to the aforementioned Anses, 11% of French homes have been infested with bedbugs between 2017 and 2022, and the numbers haven’t proved to have risen lately. That’s why some believe this is a case of media-mania, with reports of bedbugs sightings inducing panic that the bedbugs issue is worse than its been in the past. Hmmm!

HANDY BANDITS Raccoons possess remarkably nimble hands, a fact well known to anyone who’s had a garden, cooler or garbage can raided by one. Native Americans were the first to note the raccoon’s distinctive paws. The English word “raccoon” is derived from the Powhatan word “aroughcun,” signifying “animal that scratches with its hands.” The Aztecs took a similar approach in naming the raccoon, referring to it as “mapachitli,” meaning “one who takes everything in its hands.” Today, mapache means “raccoon” in Spanish.

ON THE MOVE There are six raccoon species native to North and South America. The one most familiar (because it is most common) is Procyon lotor. Other variations of this species can be found in southern regions, often inhabiting tropical islands.

PRESIDENTIAL PAWSITION When Calvin Coolidge was president, raccoon meat was a rather common sight on dinner tables in America. But when Coolidge met the raccoon Rebecca, he decided he was more interested in adopting her than eating her for supper. In no time, Rebecca became part of the family, participating in parties and accompanying the president on walks around the White House grounds. She even had an engraved collar that read, “White House Raccoon.” By today’s standards, a wild animal in the White House sounds absurd, but considering Coolidge’s pet collection at the time also included a bobcat, a goose, a donkey, two lion cubs, an antelope and a wallaby, Rebecca blended in seamlessly.

FROM FUR FARMS TO FREE In the 1920s, the initial raccoon exports to Europe were intended to stock fur farms. However, due to an accidental bombing and the whims of farmers seeking to diversify local wildlife, many raccoons escaped and established a thriving population in the wild.

MASKED MARVELS Due to the distinctive black markings that sweep across their eyes, raccoons have been associated with the cunning thief or mischievous character in tales spanning centuries. However, beyond their appearance, these iconic black masks serve a practical purpose – they enhance the raccoon’s vision. The black fur works similarly to the black strips athletes apply under their eyes: The dark color absorbs incoming light, minimizing the glare that would otherwise obstruct their vision. At night, when raccoons are most active, reduced peripheral light makes it easier for them to perceive contrast in the objects of their focus — an essential skill for navigating in the dark.

Roizy Baum

PLEASANTLY PUZZLED CLEVER CONUNDRUMS Scientists regard raccoons as intelligent creatures, but city dwellers may notice that their local specimens reach special levels of cunning. This heightened intelligence may be because urban raccoons often need to outsmart human-made challenges. During an experiment, when city raccoons were outfitted with GPS collars, it was revealed that they managed to avoid major intersections. Another experiment proved that raccoons accustomed to urban environments are adept at solving unconventional problems. Garbage cans containing food were planted in urban and rural areas. When it came to opening the tricky lid, most city raccoons managed the feat while their country counterparts found it more of a struggle.

FINGER-LIKE With five toes on their front and back paws, raccoons’ forepaws look and work like human hands. Using their dexterous finger-like toes to hold objects, including latches, lids, jars, boxes and doorknobs, they can make their way into pretty much anything.

Love puzzles? Raccoons love them too. And as long as there’s food involved, the raccoons usually will find a way to solve them. In the early 1900s, ethologist (a zoologist who studies the behavior of animals in their natural habitats) H.B. Davis gave twelve raccoons a series of thirteen boxes to open. The boxes featured multiple locks, hooks, bolts, buttons, latches and levers that needed to be opened in order to access the treats inside. Unbelievably, the raccoons managed to get past eleven of the thirteen mechanisms.

EXEMPLARY ETIQUETTE Raccoons have a very sensitive sense of touch and identify many items through touch before using their other senses. Their front paws contain about four times the number of sensory receptors as their back paws. This allows these masked creatures to feel out objects without seeing them — a crucial factor when feeding at night.

YESHUOS GUARANTEED

What is Pidyon Rashash? A Pidyon Nefesh (redemption of the soul), revealed by the Arizal, taught by the holy Rashash. Holy Mekubalim set aside 160 pure silver coins and evoke Rachamei Shamayim with special Kabalistic Tefilos individually for each name, and donate these coins to Talmidei Chachamim, through this Segulah, the judgment is transferred from the person to the coins. Rav Chaim Vital, who performed it for himself yearly, states 'It has been tried and proven thousands of times! And one is guaranteed to live the entire year in peace!' (‫)הגהות שער הכוונות‬
