(Re: Why We Go Into Your House, Inbox, Issue 216) Entering another person’s domain without permission, whether it is still a hole in the ground, partially constructed, or fully furnished, is called trespassing. If not for the seriousness of the issue, I would have laughed at the writer who’s afraid she won’t ever get invited in once the owners move in and so enters the house without permission to satisfy her curiosity. To the writer who justifies trespassing because she “needs to know” if her new neighbors will be able to look into her house, I say to keep your shades drawn when in doubt. Privacy went out the window (pun intended) when multi-family housing came on the scene. Assume your new neighbors can see everything. The key to an excellent neighborly relationship is keeping what you know to yourself, which includes keeping yourself on your side of the fence unless invited to visit (unless you’re bringing a plate of cookies once the movers leave). My first thought was that it was a spoof, but based on the follow-up responses, I understand that it was a real letter. I would like to ask the letter writer, and all those who think similarly, these questions: 1. Why do you think “es kimt zich dir” to see others’ homes? 2. If you do believe with such confidence that it’s your right, why would you hesitate to ask the owner for permission? If he agrees with your perspective, great; if not, it’s assur for you to go in, regardless. 3. Do you really think that getting (or taking) a tour of someone else’s home will eliminate what you call “petty competitiveness”? 4. If the homeowner walked in while you were in his home, how would you feel? What would you do? And what does that mean about what you were doing? Thank you, S.R.

As a person who helps families in the community who are facing financial crises, I have witnessed the devastating effects of the current housing market on many of our community members, and I feel compelled to share my concerns and advice with your readers. The last couple of months have been very hard for many families in our community. They are struggling to pay their mortgages, bills and other expenses. They are facing foreclosure, bankruptcy and debt. They are losing their homes, their savings and their dignity. Many of these families bought their houses in this market with high interest rates and high prices, hoping that they would be able to refinance later. But unfortunately, the market has not yet improved, and they are stuck with loans they cannot afford. They are trapped in a vicious cycle of debt and despair. I urge my fellow community members to be very careful before buying a house. I know it’s exciting to buy a house, and I know you don’t want to keep renting. But buying a house is not worth the pain and humiliation of facing fellow community members when you owe them money. It’s not worth risking your financial stability and security for a house that you may not be able to keep. Please, before you buy a house, consult a financial advisor, and weigh your options carefully. Don’t let the pressure of the market or the expectations of others influence your decision. Moshe Rabbeinu told Aharon to preserve one jug of mann. “This is what Hashem commanded,” said Moshe, “Let one omerful be preserved for generations, in order that they see the bread that I fed you in the midbar when I took you out of the land of Mitzrayim” (Shemos 16:32). The last few words of the pasuk seem superfluous. The pasuk could have simply stopped after explaining that this is the food that nourished Bnei Yisroel during their time in the midbar. Why is it necessary for the Torah to add, “When I took you out of Mitzrayim”?

NATI WAS BORN in the Soviet Union in 1968 to a life devoid of Yiddishkeit. After serving in the Russian army, he advanced his natural artistic skills, and took a job designing billboards. Nati enjoyed a high social standing along with a hefty paycheck. Materially, he lacked for nothing. After the Iron Curtain fell, he was exposed to Yiddishkeit and slowly drew closer to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. In time, he decided to leave his comfortable lifestyle and move to Eretz Yisroel. There, he learned more about his heritage and began to look and behave more and more like an ehrliche Yid. Nati’s new life wasn’t all smooth sailing; he struggled to earn a living. He watched as many of his peers who had also emigrated to Eretz Yisroel from the Soviet Union took on menial jobs such as mopping floors and cleaning buildings in order to survive. But Nati hesitated to go there. He wanted to advance a career that used his talents and retained his higher standards. Hashem heard his pleas, and he soon noticed a job opening with a tech company in Ramat Gan. They were looking for a de-

signer to join their graphics team, and Nati proved to be well suited to the position. Before long, Nati learned all the secrets of the trade and was enjoying his new job. His salary was not that great, despite the number of hours he invested, yet Nati was satisfied. I have everything I need, and I’m doing something I enjoy in a respectable environment, he reasoned. One evening, Nati received a phone call from a relative, Rabbi Miller. Rabbi Miller took true interest in his growing cousin and wanted to hear how he was faring. After speaking for a while, Rabbi Miller asked a question that took Nati by surprise. “Why don’t you learn?” he asked. “You should really make sure to learn some Torah every day.” “How can I learn?” Nati protested. “I work from early morning to late evening just to cover my expenses. I have no time or headspace left after that.” Rabbi Miller didn’t accept the argument. “I’m sure you can take off one hour of work a day to learn Torah. Don’t worry about your paycheck. Hakadosh Baruch Hu carries the burden of feeding every single being. Surely, you won’t lose anything if you decrease your hours a bit.” “How can I?” Nati insisted. “My company just took on a big contract, and everyone on staff is expected to fill in overtime. If I cut my hours now, I might lose my job!” Rabbi Miller began to explain the concepts of bitachon and hishtadlus to Nati. He shared chizuk and stories. “Not only do people not lose out when they rely on Hashem; they see much more bracha in their work when they do!” His words made an impression on Nati, but there was one question still bothering him. “How do I know that “If I cut my someone like me, who didn’t grow up frum and hardly knows much, will achours now, tually merit to see Hashem take care of my parnassah? Who says I will, too?” “There’s a pasuk in Tehillim that we say every day,” Rabbi Miller replied. “‘Posei’ach es yadecha u’masbia l’chol chai ratzon’ (Tehillim 145:16). It means that Hashem opens His hands wide and provides every living creature with the nourishment it wants. Hakadosh Baruch Hu concerns Himself with food for everyone, even animals. Do you think He cannot give you what you need?” Nati was convinced. The very next morning, he left work an hour early. He went to the beis midrash and joined a shiur, even though he barely understood a word. After two weeks of participating, he began to pick up on the style and understand what the maggid shiur was saying. Then, one morning, his boss called him for a meeting. Nati was anxious. He was surely in for a reprimand for cutting his hours, especially at peak season. What could he say to defend himself? He sat down at his boss’s desk. “I noticed recently,” the boss began. Just then, his phone rang and he picked up the call. In his mind, Nati finished the sentence: I noticed recently that you’re leaving work early. This cannot go on. But then his boss put down the phone and continued, “I noticed recently that you’re doing beautiful work. Your design is impeccable and really increases the value of our company. I’ll be giving you a raise…” Nati was shocked. This was not what he’d expected. Rabbi Miller’s words echoed in his mind, “Not only does one not lose out… they see much more bracha…” He thanked his boss and rushed back to his own desk. The first person he shared his miracle with was Rabbi Miller. He wouldn’t be losing out on pay for cutting his hours so he could carve out time for Hakadosh Baruch Hu — and he was even gaining! His paycheck was bigger even though he was working less! With Rabbi Miller’s encouragement, Nati soon cut back even more hours in order to learn, and he still retained his salary. He saw clearly how Hashem feeds every one of His creations — even those who are not yet on a lofty level of ruchnius. * * * * *

The Meshech Chochmah explains that there are those who mistakenly believe that hashgachah pratis in parnassah is reserved for those who are on a high level — people who are able to live their daily lives beyond the realms of nature. Because of their elevated level of trust in Hashem, they are able to allow themselves to believe that Hashem will support them in miraculous ways. But the rest of us, who aren’t yet there, must behave realistically and not rely on nissim. The Torah refutes this misconception. When did Klal Yisroel receive the mann? When they were in the midbar, right after they left Mitzrayim. It was still before Matan Torah, yet they were zoche to receive spiritual nourishment by means of the mann. Any person, regardless of his level of avodas Hashem, is guaranteed to receive the parnassah he needs, if he trusts and relies on Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Health Awareness We start by discussing how the general public’s relationship with health has shifted over the past year, due to Makdim’s work in health education and awareness. What have the doctors noticed in their practices? Dr. Inslicht: Makdim has made people aware of the importance of prevention, rather than just waiting until they get sick. We see people being more proactive about scheduling their physical exams. NP Hayum: We are seeing an increase in requests for well-visits. People are asking which screenings are important, especially colonoscopies and mammograms, which were heavily stressed in Makdim’s earlier campaign. Chaim Fleischer, Makdim: B”H there’s been a lot of progress, but we haven’t touched the tip of the iceberg yet. Before our initiative, we were under 10% of the national average for preventative colonoscopy screenings. While we’ve made progress, we’re still far behind. Duvid Fleischman, Hatzolah: It’s not just in the doctors’ offices. Hatzolah members and medical professionals are approached with medical questions daily by friends and family, in shul and at simchas. It’s become the talk of the town. Chaskie Rosenberg, Makdim: Makdim’s campaign has increased awareness about making preventative health a priority. Human beings are not invincible.

Annual Well-Visits Next, we discuss the importance of annual physical exams and what patients should be aware of when it comes to their annual well-visit.

PA Sultan: The annual visit is less about the physical exam and more about the doctor-patient relationship and discussion that ensues. During the visit, the patient can bring up concerns that are on their mind that they may be embarrassed about or wouldn’t have scheduled an appointment for. Once there is a solid relationship between the doctor and the patient, the patient will be more likely to follow the doctor’s recommendations for screenings, tests, and vaccines. People are questioning if there are enough doctors for the entire community. They’re asking where they can go for their well-visits. Chaim Fleischer, Makdim: These doctors are ready to welcome patients into their care. Makdim has a list of primary care doctors who are extending hours to accommodate more patients.

Continuity Of Care In recent years, we’ve shifted from lifelong doctor-patient relationships, where a family doctor guided a patient through every life stage. Now, we visit busy practices with multiple providers. How does this impact our medical care? PA Sultan: Continuity of care is one of the most essential aspects of healthcare. With an established relationship, the doctor is familiar with the general health of a patient, their family history, and their lifestyle. That makes it easier to detect any abnormalities or concerns early on. Chaim Fleischer, Makdim: Our community is not yet aware that the doctors at these medical practices — ParCare, Ezra, Premium, Perfect, and others — are here to build these crucial relationships. They’re here to reinstate the personal doctor-patient relationship.

NP Hayum: There’s continuity of care as long as you stay in the same practice. Seeing other providers won’t make a difference to your care because the practice has systems in place to keep track of the information to ensure recommendations are followed. Dr. Leifer: We also have to mention that a lot of it is up to the patient. At Ezra, we often see that people’s time is limited. They aren’t particular about which doctor they see, so long as they are seen as quickly as possible for the reason they came. Patients with a condition that requires closer medical care, or those who prioritize a connection with their doctor, should request a specific provider, to ensure they see the same one at every visit.

Preventative Care Chaskie Rosenberg, Makdim: Our community still lacks awareness of what constitutes a preventative care visit. Ask most people about the last time they went to a doctor, and they’ll tell you, ‘Oh, I went last week. I slipped, I fell, I had a sore throat.’ That’s not called primary care. When a person goes to their primary care doctor for a well-visit, they get a full physical check for preventative reasons. Dr. Kheradnam: Especially now, during flu season, we’ll ask patients who come in with symptoms about their annual check-ups. They’ll say ‘No, I’m fine.’ Even though you’re fine, you still need an annual checkup. The fact that you don’t feel any symptoms doesn’t mean you don’t have a problem. Early detection is key to effective treatment. Chaskie Rosenberg, Makdim: I’ll take it a step further and say this: Even a patient with a medical condition who goes to his specialist for regular

checkups, is still not getting primary care. That specialist isn’t going to ask him about getting a colonoscopy or check for issues that aren’t directly related to his specialty. The same applies to women who go to their OB for yearly check-ups. The OB is focused solely on women’s health. Both men and women need a primary care physician whom they visit every year. Dr. Leifer: People in our community understand that they need to take their kids for yearly well-visits. They need forms for school and camp and they need to stay up-to-date with their vaccinations. However, as soon as they grow into teenagers they’re gone. Before you know it, ten years have passed and they haven’t been to the doctor unless they had strep and went to an urgent care for some antibiotics.

Medical History Let’s discuss the importance of medical history. Doctors ask new patients for their complete medical history but patients are often unaware of their history because in many families, talking about medical issues is severely stigmatized. Why is that significant? PA Sultan: A person’s medical history is crucial to their health. If they have a family history of a certain issue, they are at higher risk and we recommend screenings for that condition sooner. Dr. Inslicht: Many families don’t talk about medical issues. I’ll see a patient and I’ll ask if there’s any diabetes in the family. They’ll answer in the negative, but then I’ll say, ‘What do you mean? Your grandfather was my patient, and he was diabetic.’ Motty Fleischer, Hatzolah: When I get a call about a 60-year-old patient who claims he has no medical history,

my next question is, ‘Who’s your primary doctor?’ The reason he doesn’t have any medical history is because he doesn’t have a primary doctor. Chaskie Rosenberg, Makdim: People view the words medical history as referring to a tragic event — heart attack, cancer, etc. They need to know that high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, sugar, and medication are also history.

Preventative Screenings We asked the doctors what screenings are recommended for men and women at each decade of life. The doctors didn’t want to go into detail about specific tests, because they’re individual to each patient and will be addressed at their annual well-visit. NP Hayum: Each person must have a relationship with a provider who can explore their risk factors and know what to be aware of and what to look out for. Chasky Rosenberg, Makdim: The providers will keep their patients informed based on their risk factors and family history. The recommendations for testing will be different for each individual based on many factors — Are they overweight? Is he a smoker? Is there a history of cancer?

Skin Cancer There has been a recent uptick in skin cancer diagnoses across the medical world. What should the public be aware of and what measures can we take to protect ourselves? Dr. Inslicht: Unfortunately, we see that people are unaware of the dangers of sun exposure. We now recommend a full-body scan by a dermatologist as a preventative measure. Dr. Leifer: I wish people would be more

aware of the importance of wearing sunscreen, even in the winter.

Next Steps In conclusion, what is the most important point you would like readers to take away from this discussion? Chaskie Rosenberg, Makdim: Primary care visits are of utmost importance — that is Makdim’s main message. Dr. Inslicht: We’d like for people to be more proactive and take preventative steps for better health. Duvid Fleischman, Hatzolah: When people don’t have primary care physicians they don’t get checked. Every day, we attend to emergencies that could have been prevented by regular check-ups. PA Sultan: I applaud Makdim’s efforts to raise awareness and bring about change. We now see many patients who want to take charge of their health.

More Federal Funding May Be Headed for NYC After Census Recount A request by New York City officials to have the Census Bureau double-check its numbers may pay off to the tune of millions of dollars, with the total number of residents jumping by 1,090 people. With the census numbers used to determine congressional seats and the allocation of trillions of dollars in federal funding, the Census Bureau has provisions to double-check its numbers. Almost 200 requests have been received for recounts in the wake of the 2020 census. While the changes to New York City’s numbers can’t be used to redraw political districts or to snag more congressional seats, it could yield as much as an extra $6.5 million in federal funding each year. The additional numbers are believed to have come from students at several colleges as well as prison inmates. Having had an extra 89 people counted in the census would have saved New York from losing a congressional seat after the 2020 count.

Frigid Weather Wreaks Havoc on Electric Vehicle Batteries

electric vehicles are known for doing poorly in cold weather, because a battery’s charge dissipates much faster when the temperatures tumble. One study done by battery research firm Recurrent showed that eighteen popular electric vehicles saw reduced driving ranges of up to 70% when the mercury dipped below freezing. The problem may not necessarily affect all drivers, because while an electric vehicle with a 200 to 215 mile range may last for only 150 to 175 miles in the cold, most motorists drive just 30 miles a day. Tesla’s website does advise drivers to keep their battery above 20% in extremely cold weather and notes that energy consumption increases in the winter because it takes more energy to heat the battery and the vehicle’s interior. Drivers are also encouraged to lower both their speed and their interior heat in order to minimize battery drain in the cold weather. Whether or not electric vehicles will stand the test of time remains to be seen, even as the federal government and states continue their push toward electric vehicles. One study found that electric vehicles have nearly 80% more problems than gaspowered cars and are typically less reliable. But those statistics are unlikely to sway consumers, said Scott Case, cofounder and CEO of Recurrent. “Everybody who wasn’t going to buy one feels great with their decision because they saw the pictures out of Chicago, and everyone who was going to buy an EV has already decided,” said Case.

Electric vehicles are more popular than ever, but the recent ice-cold temperatures have caused significant problems for owners of battery powered cars. In Chicago, where wind chill temperatures dipped to -25 degrees last week, Tesla owners had trouble starting their cars, reported CBS News. Battery charging has been equally problematic, with some charging stations failing completely, while others saw charging times doubling or worse. “A charge that should take 45 minutes is taking two hours,” Tesla driver Brandon Welbourne said last week as he waited more than five hours to be able to charge his car. The warm relationship between the NYPD and Chevrah Hatzalah was further deepened last week after a visit by Police Commissioner Edward Caban. Caban visited Central Hatzalah headquarters on January 16, enjoying a full tour of the state-of-the-art facility, as well as an opportunity to speak with coordinators from Hatzalah chapters in Boro Park, Catskills, Flatbush, Queens, Riverdale, Staten Island and Williamsburg. Caban affirmed the police department’s strong allegiance to Hatzalah and its dedicated volunteers and described NYPD Community Affairs Commanding Officer Inspector Richie Taylor as a beloved superhero, who always gives 110 percent for New York City’s diverse population, including the Jewish community. Hatzalah CEO Rabbi Yechiel Kalish thanked Caban for taking the time out of his busy schedule for an in-person visit. In his remarks, Taylor credited Caban for his quick response to the October 7 terror attacks in Israel, noting that he held a Zoom call with members of Hatzalah and Shomrim to ensure the safety of New York City’s Jewish communities. Caban also got a real-time lesson in Hatzalah’s activities, with emergency calls coming in and dispatched during his visit.

The cost to mail a first-class letter weighing an ounce or less jumped from 66 to 68 cents on Sunday. After two years of funding cuts in Mandated Services Aid to non-public schools, Governor Kathy Hochul’s recently released executive budget for the 2025 fiscal year will include a substantial increase that will benefit yeshivas, if approved by state legislators. Mandated Services Aid, known as MSA, is a state-funded program that reimburses religious and independent schools for complying with certain state standards such as attendance, testing and immunization record-keeping. It is the largest source of state funding to nonpublic schools, providing more than $200 million in funding each year, but an $8 million shortfall for the 2021–2022 school year resulted in a 4% funding cut to all private schools. A similar, if not larger, cut in reimbursements is still expected for the 2022–2023 school year. But with $239 million allocated in the governor’s latest

Rabbi Silber recognized partner organizations that advocate for nonpublic schools, including the NYS Catholic Conference, Teach NYS and the Jewish Education Project for their efforts and noted that Hochul’s proposed budget still has to be passed by both the State Senate and Assembly before April 1.

DA’s Office Gives $15K Bonus to Aide Who Bullied Jewish Staffers A top aide to Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez who was put on leave after being accused of anti-Semitism in multiple incidents reportedly received a substantial end-of-year bonus, making her one of the top two earners in her office. As previously reported in The Boro Park View, Maritza Ming reportedly complained that certain city bureaus have “too many Jews in power.” The 51-year-old was also the subject of several discrimination complaints lodged by Jewish members of the District Attorney’s Office, with sources saying that others who wanted to file complaints against Ming didn’t out of fear of retribution. Gonzalez hired an outside consultant to investigate his office’s handling of the complaints, with a goal of increasing diversity among his staff. Despite being on paid leave for the past six months, Ming was one of approximately 20 executives in the District Attorney’s Office to receive a taxpayer bonus in the $5,000 to $15,000 range. Spokesperson Oren Yaniv defended the bonus, saying that salaries in the District Attorney’s office are typically lower than that offered in other city agencies, with bonuses used to make up the disparity. The bonus upped Ming’s salary for the year to $223,849, earning her $11,632 more than her boss, who declined to take a bonus for the year.

Hochul Loosens CDL Requirements To Attract More School Bus Drivers Working closely with the Department of Motor Vehicles, Governor Kathy Hochul has simplified the commercial driver licensing process in an effort to mitigate the ongoing school bus driver shortage. Hochul announced on January 17 that the DMV implemented a waiver at the federal level allowing school bus driver applicants to skip a component of the commercial driver license (CDL) road test that required them to do an “under the hood” engine inspection. Safety Administration exemption, the waiver would have applicants taking a streamlined road test in order to receive a School Bus Only CDL. School bus drivers with the limited licenses would have to reapply for a permit and take the full CDL road test once the exemption expires on November 27, 2024. With all other inspection and maintenance standards remaining in effect, Hochul said that the exemption will not negatively impact school bus safety. “The job of transporting and caring for our children is so important, and the need for more drivers throughout New York State is very real,” said the governor. “This simple change will encourage more New Yorkers to become school bus drivers — a chance for many to be a positive influence and help support our students, without sacrificing safety.”

Third Lane May Be Coming to Route 17 Traffic to and from the Catskills may be moving more swiftly in the future, with roadway agencies exploring the possibilities of widening Route 17 and adding an extra lane in each direction. The New York State Department of Transportation is putting together an environmental impact statement for the project, which would run for 30 miles between Woodbury and Monticello and could be completed by 2030. While those who have spent hours sitting in traffic on the roadway will likely support the plan, the environmental group Catskill Mountaineer is less than enthusiastic. According to the group, widening the roadway would lead to additional traffic, cause massive increases in carbon emissions and lead to urban sprawl. Instead, Catskill Mountaineer is proposing ride sharing and public transportation as more environmentally-friendly ways to lessen traffic, which peaks on Fridays and Sundays. A statement on the group’s webpage read, “As the watchdog for the Catskills and its communities, our goal is to prevent this expansion and its negative outcomes, advocating instead for a better vision.”

Hello,” Mr. G. said coldly. “Who am I speaking with?” Riva delicately rolled her chair away. Mr. Gabioff reached over to the phone’s base and put the call on speaker. Gittel’s high-pitched voice flooded the room. “And who are you? The boss?” “Yes. Yes, I am. I’m the boss.” “Oh, great, so I’m sure you can help me.” She proceeded to repeat the whole story about her daughter’s house and the two possible moving dates, including the whole deal with the scraper finishing before or after Shabbos and her ki tov vort. D IR EC T I O N S 1. Preheat the oven to 400°, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. Drizzle small amounts of honey onto the parchment-lined baking sheet, creating 12 separate honey drizzles. 3. Sprinkle fresh or dried thyme, salt, and pepper over each honey drizzle. 4. Press a thin slice of onion on top of each honey drizzle, followed by 1 to 2 thin slices of Muenster cheese. 5. Place a puff-pastry square on top of each onion and cheese stack. ROASTED CAULIFLOWER G R AT I N I don’t know about you, but any recipe that instructs the cook to “bake until the cheese is golden brown and bubbly” is a recipe I want to be making. This recipe converted the hard-core vegetable skeptics in my house. INGREDIENTS 24

oz. frozen cauliflower Salt and pepper, to taste

tsp. garlic powder

tsp. onion powder

tsp. parsley flakes

stick butter

cup Wondermills flour

cups milk, at room temperature Salt and pepper, to taste

cup pizza cheese, divided

cup parmesan cheese, divided

D IR EC T I O N S 1. Preheat the oven to 425°. 2. Place the cauliflower on a lined baking sheet. 3. Season with a light drizzle of olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and parsley. Bake for 30 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, melt butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. 5. Sprinkle in flour, and cook for 1 minute while whisking constantly. 6. Slowly pour in the milk while whisking, then turn heat up to medium-high and bring to a simmer while whisking constantly. 7. Turn heat back down to medium, then simmer for 1 minute or until milk has thickened, still stirring constantly. 8. Remove pan from heat, add half cup each of pizza and parmesan cheeses, and stir until smooth. 9. Season with salt and pepper. 10. Add enough of the cheese sauce to thinly coat the bottom of a 9x13-inch oven-to-table baking pan. 11. Add roasted cauliflower, then cover with remaining sauce. 12. Top with remaining cheeses, and bake for 30 to 35 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown and bubbly. Broil for a few minutes at the end if you want a darker top. Note: The halacha regarding the six-hour wait between eating aged cheese (such as parmesan) and meat applies when the cheese is six or more months old and remains uncooked.

They say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree — and sometimes we see that play out in chosen lines of work. In honor of Tu B’Shvat, The Boro Park View spoke with three parent-child sets, where both members of each pair have elected to work in the same profession.

Kaff’s Bakery Parents: Reb Hillel and Mrs. Rachel Kaff of Kaff’s Bakery Son: Reb Elyukim Kaff of Kaff Bake Shoppe

When Reb Hillel’s father, Reb Hershel Kaff, a”h (known as Hashie), arrived in Bnei Brak after the war in 1950, he opened a tiny bakery that sold bread and rolls (who ate cake?) at a tiny kiosk on Rechov Rabbi Akiva. The first deliveries were actually made with a donkey! Reb Hershel’s father, Reb Pinchas Yehuda Kaff, had owned a bakery back in Erlau (Eger), Hungary, and so this was a line Reb Hershel was familiar with. In those poverty-stricken days, the bakery kept Reb Hershel’s family afloat. Then Reb Hershel came to Amer-

ica and, after years of toil, he bought Lee Ave Bakery in Williamsburg. His son Reb Hillel worked at the bakery after his marriage, until he moved and opened his own branch of Kaff’s Bakery in Boro Park. Father and son baked the bread, rolls and cakes that Kaff’s was famous for. Eventually, Reb Hillel’s son Elyukim opened his own Kaff bakeries in

Flatbush and took over the operation of Kaff’s in Boro Park as well. Reb Hillel’s other son now owns the famous Zomick’s bakery, and three other brothers are also involved in its operation. During the early years of Lee Ave Bakery in Williamsburg, Rabbi Hershel Weber worked there with Reb Hershel Kaff, and together they founded Hatzolah. In the 1960s, Kaff’s Bakery was one of the few businesses in Williamsburg to own a car. It was always parked on Lee Avenue, and they kept an oxygen tank — a rarity at the time — in the bakery, to be grabbed during the next emergency before piling into Kaff’s (station wagon) “ambulance.” Not only did the Kaff grandfather, son and grandson become bakers, but they also were and are Hatzolah members. This is a lasting legacy of a grandfather.

After seeing how hard my father worked, it was the last thing I wanted to do. However, one day, when I was still learning in kollel, my father called to say that he really needed my help because his assistant baker had cut his hand. I went in to help my father and afterward returned to kollel. After that, my father developed kidney stones and needed help again, and I once again went to help out.

Reb Shayele’s Shtar In the end, that led to my becoming a bakery owner myself. Reb Elyukim, did you want to be in the bakery business when you grew up?

Definitely. We lived in an apartment on top of Kaff’s Bakery in Boro Park, and as a little boy, I dreamed of the time when I could be part of the bakery business. I used to sit in the office behind the bakery and watch my mother. She took the orders and ran the wholesale and retail parts of the bakery, while my father baked the breads and cakes. Reb Elyukim, what changes have you seen in the bakery business throughout the years?

Larger bakeries today have more automated equipment that churn out items like black and white cookies and rugelach, as opposed to each one being formed by hand. My grandfather and father, yblch”t, had their hands in the flour every single day. I myself don’t do the actual baking. I established the recipes that were handed down to me, and I make sure the bakeries are running properly according to our standards, but I don’t actually stand behind the baking ovens. Also, packaged baked goods have cut down the time that the “bakery ladies” used to spend as they cut slices of seven-layer or heavy marble cake for each customer. Now bakeries have become little luncheonettes, with sandwiches and coffee being a standard offering.

Back in Erlau, Hungary, Reb Pinchas Yehuda Kaff was very disturbed one day when he saw mice in his bakery. As a very learned man, he knew that in Yerushalmi D’mai (7:2) the story is told of a town that complained to Reb Pinchas ben Yair that the mice were eating their grain harvest. He responded, “Give ma’aser and you will not have mice.”

Reb Shayele called together a beis din of dayanim in Kerestir and they wrote a shtar — a legal document — saying, “If this man is correct and indeed gives ma’aser, the mice should disappear.” Reb Pinchas Yehuda traveled back to Erlau and hung the shtar on the wall of his bakery — and the mice promptly disappeared, never to return! It seems that the story of the mice traveled around the globe, but the details got lost. Today, people hang the picture of Reb Shayele’s likeness to provide protection from mice — but somehow ma’aser was left out of the “picture.”

Reb Elyukim, do you see any changes in the types of cakes that are offered, as opposed to those that were offered in your grandfather’s bakery on Lee Ave?

There are bakeries that offer nut-free or gluten-free products — one of the other Kaff grandchildren specializes in Carbolicious carb-free bread. But a good cheesecake is always a best-seller and never goes out of style! 126

Rabbi Moshe Hersh Edelstein

Rabbi Moshe Hersh Edelstein is an eleventhgeneration shochet and has been involved in shechitah and kashrus for 47 years. He is the kashrus administrator for Khal Adas Jeshurun of Washington Heights and serves as a shochet for Monsey Glatt, which is also under the hashgacha of KAJ.

How did you get started in shechitah?

As I am the eleventh generation in a family of shochtim, my father, who was a shochet in Montreal, wanted me to learn the halachos of shechitah. I was a chasan at the time, still learning in Eretz Yisroel, and he told me before I came home for my wedding, “Just learn the halachos and get kabbalah [the shechitah equivalent of passing the bar], even if you don’t end up becoming a shochet.” I traveled to Tzefas where I began learning the relevant halachos with my father’s brother, who was also a shochet. I’d get up at 4 a.m. each morning to study and soon received kabbalah for “Just learn the the shechitah of poultry. halachos and get Back in the United kabbalah [the States, I got married and learned in kolshechitah equivalent lel very happily until one day my father-inof passing the bar], law (who was also a shochet for KAJ) called even if you don’t me at 3 a.m. one morning and said, end up becoming a “The mashgiach was shochet” taken into the hospital. Yes, very much so. I enjoyed teaching my son shechitah, and it was a great pleasure to work alongside him for fifteen years. It also gave me great satisfaction to see him successful in this field. What has changed in the world of shechitah over the years?

The shochtim today have better equipment to prepare their chalef, which makes it easier for them to do a better job. As an aside, I remember that in the older and leaner days, one poultry shochet would use the narrow, half-inch-thick side of the stone to sharpen his chalef in order to preserve the stone. Nowadays there’s no such thing. On the flip side, when I started out, I was able to work locally for many years since slaughterhouses were located in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas, which were relatively close by. I did not have to be a Shabbos gast in my own house. Today, shechitah takes place mostly in Iowa, Mexico, South America and so on. This involves a lot of traveling, which takes the shochet away from home for days or weeks at a time. 128

Rabbi Yosef Edelstein While Reb Yosef Edelstein works primarily in another field, he has served as a shochet for Monsey Glatt for fifteen years and still fills in as a mashgiach or shochet whenever the need arises. While you were growing up, did you believe you would train as a shochet one day?

I certainly did not. During that time, most of the slaughterhouses on the East Coast were closing down and moving to the Midwest and other states, and I couldn’t see myself being away from family all week. That’s why, after learning in kollel, I began working in another field. However, my father was still working at a smaller shlachthaus located in New Jersey. One day, he called me up and said that the team needed some help. “Come work as a mashgiach here,” he said. “You’ll help out with the stamping as well as with the chalafim.” This meant getting up very early in the morning, but I was able to do that while continuing to put in my regular work hours. Over the years, my father kept encouraging me to get kabbalah. Since I had so much experience working in the shechitah field, I knew much of the required material, and so I went ahead and learned to be shochet. What was it like to have your very own father teach you hilchos shechitah?

I am extremely fortunate to have had the experience of learning from and working alongside my father, who is an expert in the field and has a very deep understanding of shechitah, bedikah and the chalef. Since he had the zechus to learn from chashuve shochtim of the previous generation, I was able to learn so much more than the average shochet. Additionally, while most shochtim nowadays learn shechitah halfway across the country, I had the opportunity to learn the relevant halachos in the shlachthaus where my father worked. It was closer to home and operated on a smaller scale, both of which simplified the entire experience.

Please tell us how you became an alef-beis rebbi.

I was first hired as a rebbi by a yeshivah in Monsey after my years in kollel. They needed an alef-beis rebbi and gave me the chance, even though I was a real beginner. However, as the year progressed, the higher-ups realized that the children were not advancing in reading. They called me in and told me, “You really should try something else.”

“I use twenty methods. I have twenty children in my class, and each one needs a different method” As painful as it was to hear that, I realized they were right. In those days, jewelry manufacturing was still being done on-site in Manhattan. I quickly picked up the craft, and soon I was able to use a torch to solder gold in order to create jewelry tubing and clasps. It paid per piece, and I was able to start earning dollar after dollar. Working in the diamond district, I was surrounded by

other frum young men, and it was very geshmak. We were able to converse with each other while sitting and working at our tables, but I still felt an emptiness. I realized that I wanted to once again teach precious Yiddishe kinderlech. This time, I was determined to succeed in teaching little boys. I soon learned that small children can’t always express themselves, and that it is up to us to figure out how they’re thinking, and to reach the child using his level of understanding. A melamed has indescribable pleasure when he takes a little yingele who cannot read a word and brings him up to the level of being able to daven from a siddur. You start with the osiyos and the sounds each letter makes, you progress to nekudos, and then to one syllable, and then to two. People in the kriah field often ask me, “So what method do you use?” I look at them and say, “I use twenty methods. I have twenty children in my class, and each one needs a different method.” Can you explain one method?

whose beard was turning gray. He called out to me “Rabbi Klein! Rabbi Klein, remember me? I used to be in your class.” This gentleman had a lisp when he was in my alef-beis class. When each boy had to say a letter or read a line out loud, he kept his mouth tightly shut. I called him over one day during recess and showed him a huge bag of jelly beans. “You see this bag of jelly beans? If you will read tomorrow when I call on you, you will get the entire bag.” The boy couldn’t believe it. He was so excited that he couldn’t sleep all night. On the bus in the morning, he boasted, “Rebbi is going to give me a big bag of jelly beans.” The other boys laughed; they didn’t believe his story. But sure enough, when the time came, his excitement overcame his

dread of reading out loud, and he read his line with focus and determination. For this child, a hill of jelly beans was the key to his opening up. Of course, this method had nothing to do with building reading skills, but rather with understanding the child and his fears. Nevertheless, after that, every day it became easier and easier for him to read aloud and join the class in learning to read. What advice do you have for parents who are struggling with their child’s alef-beis?

I tell parents, “You want your child to read — but does he want to read?” You have to find the key that will motivate him and get him ready and thirsting to read on his own. What is the hardest part of being an alef-beis rebbi?

Recess. I worry more about the children when they have recess than when they have to learn alef-beis. This is the age where boys learn to share. The din Torahs that I have to pasken… I klap Al Cheit on Yom Kippur for those I may not have properly judged. Did you want your son to become an alef-beis rebbi?

I know that years of listening to my stories definitely made an impact, but the truth is that a desire to teach really comes from the heart. My son is a talmid chacham, and when the time came for him to make a parnassah, he felt very strongly that he wanted to follow the words of the Ksav Sofer in Parshas Bereishis (1:15) on the idea of “es hakochavim,” that those who teach little children are compared to stars whose light always shines because they will be rewarded for the mitzvos the children do when they grow up.

Rabbi Y. Klein Rabbi Yoel Klein has been a rebbi for ten years and is beloved by both talmidim and parents. Why did you want to become an alef-beis rebbi? Was it your father’s influence?

It’s a good question. Why should a person become a melamed? There are certainly many better-paying ways of earning a living. I was named for my grandfather, Reb Yoel, who was a melamed of small children in Yerushalayim. He was the rebbi of children who grew to become important rebbes and rabbanim. His father-in-law, my great-grandfather, was a

melamed in Europe in the Carpathian Mountain area, and he, too, taught children who became household names. As a small child I would look at his matzeivah. Below his name it said, “Hirbitz Torah l’rabim — he spread Torah to many [people].” Those words made a great impression on me. Of course, my father certainly influenced me to become an alef-beis rebbi. At the Shabbos table, the discussion always included a story of how a child overcame a reading problem, or how the class reached a new level in reading. It was always about teaching the little children. My father probably didn’t tell you that he also teaches older men who still can’t read properly. He gives them lessons by telephone without asking their names or taking payment. Seeing how much he

In addition, the Gemara Eiruchin (16:2) teaches us that one should hold on to the trade of his father, and his father will daven for him to succeed. What skills and talents must an alef-beis rebbi have?

A lot of patience, which also means it’s important to always be well rested. A rebbi also has to find pleasure in teaching little children. When a melamed goes to sleep at night, he reviews the day in his mind. “What did I accomplish today? Did I teach the kinderlach well today?” Though we may struggle financially, the satisfaction of knowing that we are marbitz Torah l’rabim is a large part of the compensation. What is the greatest challenge for an alef-beis rebbi?

We do our best to make the day enjoyable so the boys associate learning with pleasure. What advice do you have for parents who are struggling with their child’s alef-beis?

Rabbi Aryeh Levin, zt”l, was once walking with another rav, deeply immersed in a Torah discussion. Without thinking, Rav Aryeh plucked a leaf from a tree as they strolled past, and his companion turned to him in wonder. “You know,” he said, “I have never uprooted anything that could grow. Every leaf and branch has meaning and sings its unique song.” The man was pointing out to Rav Aryeh the insensitivity of cutting short any kind of life — even if it may be permissible to do so. The Torah cautions us not to cut down a fruit tree since it is considered uncalled-for destruction. The practical application of this raises many questions. Why is it forbidden? Is it permissible to cut down a fruit tree in cases of necessity? If yes, how can it be done? And what about the dangers involved?

The whole neighborhood was up with the news. The house down the block, one of the few still owned by non-Jews, was being sold to a frum family! But before long, the rumors swirled again, this time whispering that the deal had been canceled. The new owners had learned that there were some fruit trees on the property, and they backed out. Time passed. The property remained empty, with no new owners in sight. The fruit trees were seriously impacting the resale value. One day, a landscaping truck pulled up in front of the house. The crew felled the trees, and in no time, the property was sold.

The Reasons

The Torah warns us that when at war, we may not destroy the enemy’s fruit trees (Devarim 20:19). Uprooting a fruit tree is a form of unwarranted destruction, which runs contrary to the intrinsic nature of the Yid. This prohibition obligates us to stay away from bal tashchis. By extension, it is a message for us to be careful not to waste our time, talents or other resources.

Pirkei D’Rabi Eliezer explains that when a fruit tree is cut down, its loud cries can be heard from one end of the world to the other, though the human ear cannot perceive the sound. The connection between trees and speech is fascinating. We know from modern research that speaking to plants helps them grow. In fact, trees have been linked with speech from the beginning of Creation, as the pasuk refers to trees as “siach hasadeh — conversation of the field” (Bereishis 2:5). Plant life has energy, which allows it to express itself and respond when cared for or harmed. Additionally, trees were created for human pleasure. Since trees give humans life, it is improper to cut them down. The Sefer Hachinuch notes that a tzaddik finds value in everything Hashem created, and will not waste even a mustard seed. The goodness he sees in this world brings him closer to Torah and closer to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Wanton waste causes him true pain. On a Kabbalistic note, we learn from the Arizal that trees contain gilgulim, and when a tree is cut down, the neshamah can have no tikkun. This brings about serious danger.

Cutting down trees isn’t simply a prohibition that we must stay away from; according to Reb Yehuda Hachassid, it can also be a dangerous course of action to take. The Gemara (Bava Basra 26a) tells of Rabi Chanina’s son who passed away prematurely because either he or his father cut down a fig tree. The Gemara (Sotah 11a) also notes that Avshalom’s children passed away in his lifetime, ostensibly because he had burned down Yoav’s wheat fields, which is a similar case to that of a fruit tree.

There was once a man who was careful to pick fruits only when they were ripe, and he allowed others to pick from his orchards only once the fruits were fully grown. He explained that he had a mesorah that this would ensure long life and prosperity, with enough to leave over for his descendants. The Sefer Chassidim quotes this when discussing the reward for those who pick fruits only when ripe. The basis is a pasuk in Tehillim (1:3), “He shall be like a tree planted beside streams of water, which brings forth its fruit in season… and whatever he does is successful.”

Our next-door neighbor had a large tree growing right under her kitchen window. We were once comparing notes on how strongly the sun shines into our homes, and I innocently asked why she doesn’t cut back that tree. “Doesn’t it block your sunlight?” “It does,” she replied. “But it’s a fruit tree.” I urged her to ask a sheilah. There are times when one is allowed to cut back the branches of a fruit tree, such as when it prevents light from entering a home or if it’s a nuisance; indeed, my neighbor was guided on how to do so. Thinning trees to allow other trees to grow is another occasion when fruit tree branches may be excised. Sometimes there is a pressing need to cut down a tree, and there are several factors to consider. There may be leniencies regarding a tree that is old and no longer produces fruit, or one that is harmful to other trees around it, or one grown for avodah zarah, such as the asheirah tree. Then, of course, comes the big question of space. Is it permissible to knock down a tree in order to build or use the space for something else? The Horowitzes bought a ground-floor apartment of a new development when the plans were still on paper. The reason they chose this one was because their broker claimed

they would be able to extend some years down the line. Unfortunately for them, soon after they moved in, they discovered that the patch of land that was their “garden” contained a fruit tree. Besides the sticky mess its fruit left on the ground, they realized they might have an issue if they wanted to extend their apartment. According to Mrs. Horowitz, “We discussed with our rav the ins and outs of cutting down the tree so we can extend. For the meantime, our house, as is, will just have to do!” There are times, though, when the Rishonim have permitted felling a fruit tree in order to build — usually for a house itself, but not the walkway or driveway leading to it. Even then, many poskim advise selling the tree to a nonJew who would then cut the tree, or at least to have a non-Jew do the job. The tree should be uprooted along with the soil surrounding it, and replanted elsewhere. “We learned hands-on what a fruit tree on your property means,” says Mrs. Fried*. The Frieds were preparing to tear down the house on their property and build a large new home in its place. “The first step was demolition, and since there were many trees on the property, we called a landscaper to check if any of them were fruit trees. “Surprisingly, one tree, which happened to be right at the center of the property, was a crab apple tree. Its fruits were small and barely edible — crab apples are extremely sour and spongy in texture — yet it was indeed considered a fruit-bearing tree!” The Frieds set out to discover their solution. Were they allowed to cut it down? After all, it was in the way of their new home. They tried to figure out how the new structure could be designed without removing the tree, but

Eft L S Y A FEW D DID YOU KNOW? When it comes to categorizing trees as fruit-bearing or otherwise, consulting with an expert is very important and may reveal some surprises. Often, there are trees that share names with fruit but are not actually fruit-bearing trees. Other trees are fruit trees, but since they only produce poisonous fruit, there is no concern in terms of cutting it down. Finally, there are trees that don’t look like fruit-bearing trees in the least, yet they do produce some sort of fruit. So before doing anything with a tree, first ask an expert and then reach out to your rav.

that was clearly not an option. There would be no space left for the house! They discussed it with several rabbanim and were told that the only way to remove the tree would be to replant it elsewhere. “We started looking for a gardener who could help us. Most couldn’t. Then we got in touch with a company with years of experience, and they even had a property where they could place the tree. “It was fascinating to watch the landscapers uproot an entire tree, along with all of its roots! And it sure was interesting to find out about a new-to-us apple called the crab apple…” Some opinions are more stringent regarding felling trees to build a private property, but are more agreeable to clearing space for a shul or mikvah, since it is for the sake of a mitzvah. Another explanation is that fruit trees bear gilgulim that will not receive their tikkun if their life is cut short (see above for relevant halachos), but if the tree is uprooted to build a shul that will spread kedushah to the world, the kevod Shamayim it brings will be a zechus and tikkun. Ultimately, most poskim agree that the issur of felling a fruit tree applies only when it leads to waste. Practically speaking, one should always ask a she’eilah, as there are many pragmatic solutions. And when a rav or beis din rules it permissible, the Beis Din Shel Maalah concurs, and surely the danger is no longer present. Names have been changed. 148

Tucked away in a forsaken little corner of Thailand — eighteen miles from the closest civilized area, the town of Thong Pha Phum — lies a unique attraction that takes fruit to a whole new level. Spread out on an 80-acre property, Banphasawan is a resort that comprises a whole bunch of little dwellings in the shapes of fruit. For 2,200 baht a night (that’s $62!), one can choose to sleep in an oversized pineapple, a dragon fruit, a mangosteen, a rose apple, a durian, or another exotic dwelling. This enterprise didn’t start as a resort, but as an orchard. In 2002, the owner, obviously a lover of fruit, started collecting rare fruit varieties from all over Thailand, as well as exotic flowers. He then used this piece of land to plant and cultivate the area’s natural edible gems. A large focus of this venture was the durian. This exotic fruit is famous for its terrible smell, spiky appearance and the creamy, custard-like insides

that lovers of this fruit crave. The durian needs the right conditions to grow — and the smell (bad enough to have it banned in many airports) needs to be tolerated, making this faraway hiding place a great spot. But how can durian lovers, and others who are interested in this unique orchard, enjoy this fruity treasure trove? To the orchard owner’s mind, the only thing that made sense was to construct lodging accommodations that jibe with the place. And so the fruit-shaped dwellings went up, making this a very unusual tourist attraction. Visitors can sleep in a hut looking just like the fruit they most adore — and enjoy the fruit, too, since there are actual orchards of each variety surrounding the dwellings. As many of these exotic fruits are imported to grace our Tu B’Shvat tables, here we present a pictorial of this fruity paradise.

What’s soft and green and found all over? A humble member of the plant kingdom — moss. You’ve seen these carpet-like plants covering rocks, logs or the forest floor, but probably never paid much attention to this unassuming species. Here we’ll be giving moss its very own turn in the spotlight.

HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE Wherever you go on the planet, one of the things you’re almost certain to find is the moss plant. Moss grows on all seven continents, including Antarctica. It can be found in nearly all types of habitats, including ones where no other plant life is found: in boiling hot deserts, on snowy mountain peaks, under the rainforest canopy, in dark caves, and of course, jutting out of sidewalk cracks in cities. You’ve probably seen moss in many places yourself, such as on trees or rocks at the beach. When moss covers a huge area of land, it looks like a carpet was rolled out.

HOW MUCH MOSS? Moss grows over a huge area of the world, covering at least 3.7 million square miles of the globe’s surface! That’s an area as large as China or Canada, and researchers say that that number is probably a very low estimate of how much moss there really is in the world.

MOSS MECHANISMS AND MANNERISMS Plants that are part of the moss species share a few characteristics. Here are some of them: • Moss plants are non-vascular, meaning they don’t have roots and veins to transport water and nutrients. Instead, they absorb water through their leaves. • Mosses need sunlight for photosynthesis, which means that they turn sunlight into the nutrients they need to survive. Therefore, some scientists say that the north side of trees, which get more sunlight, will have more moss growing on it than the other side. • Mosses drink up water through osmosis, absorbing rainwater to stay moist. Mosses need to stay moist in order to stay alive. • Most mosses, even though they need sunlight to survive, prefer to stay in the shade so they don’t dry out. Areas that get direct sunlight are less likely to have moss grow.

DRAGON’S GOLD Did you know that moss can glow in the dark? There’s one species of moss that lives in dark places like caves or under trees. Because moss needs light to survive, this type of moss pulls in and concentrates even the tiniest amounts of light filtering into its dark growing space. This characteristic makes the moss glow with a greenish-yellow light, almost like gold particles. Imagine entering a cave full of gleaming, sparkling moss glowing on the walls and floors. If you try to scoop up some of the glittery stuff and take it with you outside the cave, however, the moss loses all its glow and looks like an ordinary plant. THE MENACE OF MOSS Because moss grows nearly anywhere, it can also grow on houses, especially on rooftops where it can get all the sunlight it needs. Problem is, if moss grows on your roof, it keeps in all the moisture that lands there, including rainwater. When a roof is exposed to moisture for a long time, it can be adversely affected. Even worse, if the roof is moist from the moss, then mold, which loves moisture, can start to grow as well — another threat to your house. So if you see moss growing on your roof, get rid of it as soon as you can!
