(Re: DIY Moss Bowls, Issue 219) I loved the moss bowls in your Tu B’Shvat issue! A little while ago I got one as a gift from a very expensive gift store. I returned it and put the funds toward a new set of beautiful linen instead. It was definitely the more practical choice — but I’d liked that beautiful home accent so much. Now, when I saw this DIY feature, I was so excited to learn that I can make a beautiful moss bowl myself! (I’ve tried real plants in the past, but I’m not good at keeping them alive.)

As an aside, I also really appreciated the article about not cutting down fruit trees. That’s what I love about The Boro Park View. It’s not just sanitized secular reading material; it’s actually unapologetically, proudly Yiddish. Thank you!

MIND-BOGGLING MANHATTAN

(Re: Boggle, Issue 218) One of my favorite features of The Boro Park View is the Boggle game. Even though there are many such games in various publications, yours is the one I turn to every week. Why? Because you challenge me to find a nine-letter word, or longer. Usually the word is associated with an article in that week’s issue, which makes the search even more fun.

They are never very difficult words, just a challenge to find.

But this week there was an error – the nine-letter word was “Manhattan,” a proper noun. Boggle does not allow proper nouns.

Listen, everyone makes mistakes.

But please don’t make this one again.

It’s my favorite part of the magazine!

Thank you for all of your great articles and stories. The hashkafah is just right for a Jewish home.

MEMORIES OF THE MINYAN BUS

(Re: Minyan on the Move, Issue 218) The article “Minyan on the Move” was a wonderful review of a very special service provided by MONSEYTRAIL. I rode their buses for nearly 25 years, and I am so grateful for their service to the Jewish community. Reading the article brought back so many good memories.

I davened Shacharis for many years on the bus and learned much Torah on the way home. I was also zoche to take part in many l’chaims, as riders had various simchas, yahrzeits and siyumim over the years.

MONSEYTRAIL has always maintained a lost-and-found. I remember a wonderful tour that I once received from Mr. Chaim Lunger on one of my lost-and-found retrievals, and it greatly enhanced my appreciation of the bus industry and the complexity of factors

involved in the comprehensive services MONSEYTRAIL was providing.

I first rode a MONSEYTRAIL bus in 1978, when I was still a bachur. It was a minyan bus, and I was told they would stop for Shemonah Esrei, which they did. However, with the engine still running, they pulled out after Kedushah, and I went flying while still in Shema Koleinu (someone picked me up, and I grabbed hold of the luggage bars). In those days, the Sefer Torah was in an aron at the front of the bus.

In my working days in Manhattan, I’d sometimes arrive late 5th Avenue (the route has changed since) and would have to run from 5th to Broadway to catch the bus. When this happened, the driver would pull over and open the door as soon as it was safe to do so.

I was in Manhattan on September 11, 2001, and MONSEYTRAIL managed to get a few buses into the West Side to take us home (it was a four-hour trip, but it was way better than walking all the way). Another memorable trip I took was a late Friday return trip during a big snowstorm, which delayed us so much that some people were ready to get off and check into hotels in order not to be traveling on Shabbos. However, with the one cell phone on board, we were able to get update from MONSEYTRAIL, contact poskim on what we could or should do, and after a switch of drivers (Jimmy took over in Paramus), we pulled into Monsey just before shkiah.

The driver drove all over the Monsey area, opening the doors near our homes to drop us off. Many left their luggage (and muktzah) on the bus.

I was zoche to be riding the 6:35 and 6:45 routes when we raised enough money for that first hachnasas Sefer Torah mentioned in the article. (Reb Dovid Lehmann helped lead that effort with the help of MONSEYTRAIL), and I had the opportunity to fill in some letters, as did my oldest sons. Afterward, we joined the beautiful seudah at Yeshiva Spring Valley.

There is so much more to say; however, we’ll end with a heartfelt thank you! MONSEYTRAIL has given us a truly wonderful way to travel.

When offering the Torah to Klal Yisroel, Hakadosh Baruch Hu made a unique proposition: By being

Mayor Hosts Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony at Jewish Heritage Museum “Evil is evil,” said Mayor Eric Adams as he marked International Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park on January 25.

Adams was joined by Holocaust survivors, community leaders and representatives of local support organizations at the museum. There, the crowd took in the exhibitions on the power of hate and the Danish rescue efforts during World War II, as well as a collection of survivor portraits taken to mark the 75th anniversary of Auschwitz’s liberation.

Museum chairman Bruce Ratner credited Adams for combating hatred and bringing people together during his lengthy career as an elected official. In his remarks, Adams spoke about the importance of eradicating the DNA of hate, reiterating that there is no place for hate in New York City or anywhere in the United States.

Toby Levy was one of two survivors who addressed the audience. She shared that the Simchas Torah terror attacks brought back horrifying memories of the Holocaust, throwing her into a lengthy depression, but hearing the mayor speaking out strongly against anti-Semitism gave her the confidence to be-

lieve that history wasn’t repeating itself.

“It’s not the same,” said Levy. “We have someone who hears us. Last time the whole world closed the doors from every country and they threw the keys away. There was no place to run. But now I hear an American guy standing in New York City, where I live, telling me, ‘I understand you and I won’t allow it.’”

Boro Park Challah a Potential Record Breaker, Topping 35 Feet A Boro Park–made challah is on track to earn a spot in the Guinness Book of Worlds Records, surpassing a 33-foot loaf made in Australia in 2019.

Strauss Bakery made the 35-foot, two-inch challah for Congregation Rodeph Shalom on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in honor of a special kiruv event held two weeks ago. It took a team of dozens to transport the challah to New Jersey, where it was baked in a kosher commercial bakery’s massive tunnel oven before being driven to its final destination. Guinness Book of World Records will review video footage of the challah in order to determine if it will be certified as the new record holder.

It took 200 pounds of dough to create the megachallah, and while it was unique, it wasn’t one of a kind. Strauss also created a second 35-footer as a backup. The extra challah was ultimately delivered to Moishe’s House, which provides Shabbos meals and programming for adults in their twenties in more than 27 countries.

Drivers have found ways to circumvent New York City’s Department of Transportation speed camera program, obscuring their license plates to avoid being issued a $50 fine. Some 22% of all drivers caught on speed cameras between January and June 2023 were found to have ghost plates or covered license plates, totaling $54 million in uncollectible fines. According to Lander’s audit, the use of ghost plates has increased more than 5,000% since 2019.

While larger penalties have been instituted against drivers using fraudulent, distorted or concealed license plates, Lander has been lobbying the city to seize ghost cars at its tunnels and bridges. He has also been urging the City Council to further increase fines for those found with ghost plates and has been asking the State Legislature to shut down car dealerships that issue fake temporary plates and to suspend the license of those who use ghost plates to evade fines and tolls.

The idea of chasing down drivers who deliberately obscure their license plates in an effort to save money isn’t a new one.

A statement issued by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on January 22 announced that the agency had recovered more than $25 million from toll evaders in 2023 using targeted patrols, enhanced internal data collection and various types of license plate readers.

Landers’ audit did show positive outcomes from the city’s speed camera program, with fewer tickets issued in places where they are located.

“Speed cameras reduce speeding, prevent crashes and save lives,” said Lander. “Unfortunately, a small but rapidly growing number of drivers are illegally obscuring their license plates in order to speed without getting caught. These scofflaws are putting their neighbors’ lives and safety at risk — and cheating the city out of $100 million a year.”

According to the lawsuit, Verizon didn’t disclose the fee in its advertised monthly prices, rendering the charge deceptive and unfair. Verizon denied the accusations but has agreed to pay those who may have been potentially affected. Those who qualify for the settlement will be notified by mail or email and will be required to submit their claims online by April 15.

The exact amount paid out to affected customers will be determined by the number of claims submitted. According to the settlement administrator, the minimum payout will likely be $15, with higher amounts awarded to subscribers based on the number of years they have been with Verizon.

Ring Drops Feature Giving Police Access to Home Security Footage Video doorbell maker Ring will be making changes to its Neighbors app in the coming weeks, discontinuing a feature that allowed law enforcement agencies to request footage from home security cameras.

While the Amazon-owned Ring gave no reason for the change in its announcement last week, The Hill reported that privacy advocates have long been concerned about the feature.

Neighbors creates forums for users who live close to each other to discuss security issues, and police departments have used its Request For Assistance tool to obtain footage from Ring devices. Police will still have the ability to share safety tips, community events and other updates through the app, but will need search warrants to access video footage recorded by Ring in most cases.

Amazon has reportedly paid out millions to settle alleged privacy violations since purchasing Ring in 2018.

he last few weeks before moving, money became an irrelevant detail in the Eisdorfs’ lives.

“I used to think of spending money in terms of twenty, fifty, a hundred dollars,” Lani commented to Chaim Tzvi as they headed toward the locksmith. “Now, I think in terms of hundreds and thousands. Isn’t it nuts?”

Andy had sent them to shop for the hardware for their new front door, which was being installed that day, and they’d decided to walk. The store wasn’t far, the weather was a dream, and both of them could use some fresh air.

“It feels nuts,” Chaim Tzvi said, “but it’s probably normal.”

“I wonder,” Lani mused. “Is it?

Let’s say this door. We don’t have to do it before we move. It’s soooo much money, whoa.”

“True, we don’t have to, but let’s be honest, a day after we move, we’re automatically going to go back

“Hmm. Good point.” She zipped open the stroller’s canopy as the sun streamed over them. “I think we spend an average of a thousand dollars an hour these days,” she concluded.

“A thousand dollars an hour sounds about right,” Chaim Tzvi agreed. “I mean, I paid a few hundred dollars this morning just to get the dishwasher and convection oven installed. And that’s besides paying the bill for the actual appliances. But baruch Hashem, I sure am glad to be up to here.”

“Yes, I guess.” A crushing heaviness settled over Lani’s chest, and she took a long drag of air to relax her lungs.

“What’s the matter, Lan?” “Oh, nothing. Really nothing. I’m just…” She was just what?

“Stressed?” she supplied at last.

“About the money?”

“No. I mean, maybe. I mean, it is a little discombobulating… You’re so cool about it, I’m jealous.”

“Not cool, just practical.” He tilted the stroller to pass over a bump in the concrete and eyed her questioningly. “But you didn’t mean the money. So what is it?”

Lani flushed. “I’m embarrassed to say. I’m going to sound like such an ingrate.”

“Go on.”

“Nothing! I’m so excited about the house, and I’m so grateful. Really, I mean it, so don’t take this the wrong way. It’s just that with this crazy short deadline, and working late at night and again every morning on my breakfasts, I’m overwhelmed, that’s all.”

“Oh, there’s nothing embarrassing about that,” Chaim Tzvi said. “It’s called human.”

Lani gave him a weak smile.

They reached the locksmith. Chaim Tzvi opened the door, and Lani immediately realized that they wouldn’t be able to bring the stroller inside. It was a tiny, messy store, with products from random hooks and shelves jutting out in every direction. Lani frowned at a sleeping Shifra.

“Ugh, she’s barely sleeping for twenty minutes. I really don’t want to wake her up…”

Chaim Tzvi offered to check out their doorknob and lock options while Lani waited outside. “I’ll bring stuff to the door for you to approve.”

That made her laugh. He didn’t offer to babysit so she could go inside to choose. He wanted to go in and pick out a doorknob for their front door. If that wasn’t perfectly funny!

But as her lips curved up, a question formed in her mind: Why not?

Why couldn’t Chaim Tzvi choose a doorknob? Who said she had a better understanding of doorknob fashion than he did? And he would show her the options; it wasn’t like she wouldn’t have a say.

Chaim Tzvi was holding the door of the store open, waiting for her to say something.

“Uh, perfect,” Lani said. “Go ahead, I’ll wait right here.” * * * * *

In the end, Shifra woke up before

Chaim Tzvi had a chance to come show Lani anything. Lani left the stroller outside and joined her husband in the store, holding the baby.

When they had finalized their choices, Lani took her construction notebook out of the stroller’s basket and ran her pen over the list. “Okay. Doorknob and locks, check. What are we doing next?”

“Next, I think we should go get something to eat,” Chaim Tzvi said. “Slow down, Lani. Aren’t you hungry?”

Lani stuck her pen into her notebook.

“I probably am,” she admitted sheepishly.

They walked over to a bagel store on the next block. As they stood in line to order their sandwiches, she watched Chaim Tzvi pull an envelope out of one of his pockets and rifle through its contents. And suddenly, her mind winded back to another sandwich — that she’d never ended up eating — months and months earlier. She could hear the printer on Orit’s desk in A&A Kitchens spew out an invoice, taste the fear that Chaim Tzvi’s edgy presence aroused.

They got their food and found a table.

Lani eyed the tuna sandwich on her plate, and then looked up to Chaim Tzvi.

“Wow,” she said. “I really didn’t realize how hungry I was.” * * * * *

It couldn’t be shopping season again — hadn’t they just finished shopping, before Pesach, and again before Shavuos?

— but incredibly, it was. And, Riva was well aware, this was camp shopping, not to be taken lightly.

It was Sunday, and Riva and her kids were waiting for their turn in the shoe store to buy sneakers along with the rest of Klal Yisroel, when the idea popped into her head. Lani was so busy with the house, when would she take care of things like sneakers?

In fact, when did Lani take care of anything? Riva was her only sister.

She should really be helping her out as much as possible — sending suppers or babysitting kids or whatever. Shopping would definitely be a help.

Lani was so grateful when Riva called, Riva regretted that she hadn’t thought of this earlier. She was spending the day out anyway, why not?

“I’ll go buy everyone something to eat,” Riva said when the Eisdorf girls showed up. “Fraidy, keep an eye on Eli, okay?”

She dashed over to the grocery across the street and picked up a package of cookies, some pretzels, and a bunch of bananas. She threw in a few water bottles, paid, and rushed back to the shoe store.

It seemed like the crowd had swelled in the few minutes she’d been out. The store was hot and noisy. Riva edged between strollers and restless kids toward her family. She paused as a salesman came toward her balancing a tower of shoe boxes.

As she waited, standing at an ungainly slant, she heard Chevi’s voice over the tumult in the room. “Ugh, Fraidy. White sneakers with gold laces?

That was in style, like, two years ago. Oh well, makes sense for you. You have such nerdy taste.”

The heat in the store closed in on Riva, and her knees felt weak.

But a moment later, she heard Fraidy’s voice, smooth and confident.

“Hmm. Wasn’t it you who told the whole class that you’re going to get white sneakers with gold laces?”

There wasn’t a single stutter in her sentence, and she went right on. “Anyway, Chevi, I like them. If you don’t, nobody’s forcing you to get them.”

With a burst of adrenaline, Riva squeezed past people and shoe boxes toward Fraidy. She caught the confused expression on Chevi’s face.

“I have food for all of you,” she told the kids, keeping her tone neutral.

She put the bag down on an empty chair. Then she slid her hand over Fraidy’s and squeezed. * * * * *

Riva’s finger halted over the keypad at the entrance to the office. Loud voices filtered out: thick accents, nervous laughs. She waited another moment, and then she heard her boss’s voice cut through the chatter. “You need to know three words. Schmatte. Clorox.

Mr. Clean.” He broke into peals of fake laughter.

Okay, interviews. Amazing. This should give her a little space to breathe in her own daled amos and settle down for the new work week. She punched in the code and pushed open the door.

nothing had happened on Friday, because probably in his brain, nothing had happened. She started walking toward her desk, but he summoned her back. “Come say hello to these nice ladies,” he said.

So much for space. She clutched her bag and turned to face the new cleaning crew. “Hi, nice to meet you,” she said sweetly.

Her boss wasn’t done. He was in some exceptionally cheerful mood, but she wasn’t going to fall for it. The Mr. Hyde of the Friday punctuality “meeting” had disappeared, and the Dr. Jekyll who stood in his place now filled her with disgust.

She kept quiet as her boss engaged the group of women in conversation, only answering questions that were directed at her. But while she waited for the first opportunity to escape to her desk, her boss suddenly jabbed his finger in her direction. “See Mrs. Stroh?” he asked the women. “She’s working for me for the past seventeen years.”

Seventeen?! From where had her boss conjured that number? Seventeen years ago Riva had still been sitting behind her desk in school.

“Seventeen years,” he repeated. “I treat my staff well. If you’re a loyal worker, show up on time and do a good job, I make it worth it for you. Right, Mrs. Stroh?”

There was so much noise and static filling her mind that although Riva was subconsciously aware that her boss was waiting for her to validate his words, she sat frozen. A volcano roared inside of her, and she remained in her seat for the rest of the interview, not moving, not making a sound. When the group of women finally filed out, she waited for her boss to sit down at his desk and shakily got to her feet.

“Mr. Gabioff,” she said.

She didn’t recognize her own voice. It was dry and scratchy, like it was passing through a metal grate. At the same time, her eyes watered, her whole face flushing with heat.

“I’m going to leave now,” she said.

“And I won’t be returning to work here anymore.”

The silence that followed was the silence of death. It lasted several long, agonizing minutes. And then Mr. Gabioff looked straight into her eyes and said, “Okay. Okay. Okay.” A long pause, and one more time. “Okay.”

STEAK AND RICE Elevate your dinner with this savory steak and rice duo. This recipe promises a symphony of delicious flavors in every bite — a meal sure to please everyone!

lb. skirt steak

D IR EC T I O N S 1. Pat dry the skirt steak. Spread it with oil, garlic powder and freshly ground black pepper.

2. Heat a medium-sized skillet until it smokes. Place the skirt steak in the skillet, and sear it on each side for 3 minutes — no more than 6 minutes altogether.

3. Remove the steak from the skillet, and allow it to rest for 10 minutes.

4. After 10 minutes, cut the steak into strips against the grain.

5. While the steak is resting, cook the rice. Rinse the rice, and add it to a pot with the water. Bring the water to a boil.

6. Lower the flame, and cook the rice for approximately 15 minutes, until the water has absorbed and it looks like there are tiny holes in the surface of the rice.

7. Remove the rice from the heat, and leave the pot cover in place. Allow the rice to steam, covered, for 10 minutes.

SAUCE

8. Meanwhile, crack the eggs, and beat them well in a cup.

9. After 10 minutes, open the pot and push the rice to one side.

oz. shiitake mushrooms, sliced

oz. bella mushrooms, sliced

cup soy sauce

T. tomato paste

tsp. cayenne (optional)

T. cornstarch diluted in 4 T. water

10. Replace the pot on the heat. Place the soy sauce and oil in the space you made in the pot.

11. Add the eggs, and allow them to scramble slightly, but leave them runny.

12. Slowly mix the rice into the egg mixture until the eggs are fully incorporated. Add the salt, and top with the green onions.

13. To prepare the sauce: Heat the oil in a medium-sized skillet. Sauté the onions, garlic, ginger, peppers and mushrooms, until the mushrooms start to soften. Add the soy sauce, water, tomato paste and cayenne pepper, and mix.

Create a slurry by fully dissolving the cornstarch in water.

Add this to the skillet, and mix until the sauce thickens.

14. Add the skirt steak to the skillet. To serve, arrange the steak and sauce on a bed of rice.

T. soy sauce

tsp. fresh grated ginger

cloves garlic, crushed

tsp. lime juice Salt and pepper, to taste

D IR EC T I O N S 1. Rub the chicken with the lemon pepper. Heat a skillet with the oil, and fry the chicken for 3 to 4 minutes on each side.

2. Cut the wontons into strips. In a separate skillet pan, heat some oil and deep-fry the wontons until they are crispy and golden.

3. Combine all dressing ingredients in a small bowl, and mix well.

4. To assemble, layer the salad ingredients in this order: Place the greens on the bottom, then top that with the carrots, jalapeño, mandarins, cashews and cilantro. Place the chicken on top. Top with fried wontons, and drizzle dressing over the salad.

POT STICKERS These steamed dumplings may seem complicated to prepare, but the extra effort is worth your while! Indulge in these perfect pot stickers, which are super crispy on the outside and full of flavor on the inside.

INGREDIENTS 1

(12 oz.) pkg. round wontons

cup black and white sesame seeds

(16 oz.) bag shredded cabbage

(16 oz.) bag shredded carrots

large zucchini

green onions, diced

lb. ground beef

jalapeno pepper

T. tomato paste

cloves garlic

cup sweet chili sauce

¼

cup red wine

tsp. salt Pinch of pepper

D IR EC T I O N S 1. To prepare the filling, heat the sesame oil in a large pot.

Add the cabbage and carrots, and sauté until the cabbage is translucent. Remove the vegetables from the pot and set aside.

2. Grate the zucchini with the peel. Drain the excess liquid from the zucchini.

3. Heat the oil in the pot. Add the diced green onions and ground beef and stir.

4. Continue to stir, crumbling the beef as it cooks. Add the grated zucchini and jalapeno. Continue to crumble and mix until the zucchini is fully mixed into the beef.

5. Add the tomato paste, garlic, sweet chili sauce and red wine. Mix well. Add the salt and pepper, and mix again.

6. Add the cabbage mixture. Cook for two minutes and remove from heat.

7. Allow this mixture to cool for 2 hours, then assemble the wontons.

A S S E M B LY 1. Lay out the wonton wrappers on a clean work surface.

Working with one at a time, spoon 1 tablespoon of filling onto the center.

2. Brush water around the edges, then fold the wrapper over the filling to create a half-moon, pinching the edges together to seal.

3. Repeat the above steps with the remaining filling and wrappers.

4. Place the sesame seeds in a shallow bowl. Brush the bottoms of the filled wontons with water and then push it into sesame seeds, pressing hard so they adhere.

5. Wipe the skillet used to make the filling. Heat the sesame oil over medium heat.

6. Add the pot stickers to the pot in batches. Cook until the bottoms are light golden-brown, 2 to 3 minutes each.

7. Carefully pour in ¼ cup of water, then immediately cover the skillet with a tight-fitting lid. Caution: Stand back, as the water will splatter!

8. Reduce the heat to medium-low, and steam the pot stickers for 3 to 4 minutes, until the wrappers are softened all over.

Does my child need therapy?

This is the question that parents are increasingly asking themselves.

Something feels off with one of your kids. Maybe you know what it is... or maybe you’re not sure quite what. It’s been going on for a while… or you’re not sure how long, but you’re pretty sure it’s getting worse. You tried talking to them, and talking to their teacher, and taking them out for ice cream, and giving them TLC and vitamins and space… but nothing seems to be helping.

So you start asking yourself, does my child need therapy?

Here, Dr. Yosef Posy breaks down the question, and gives guidance and clarity for parents as they navigate a new frontier in parenting.

he question of whether or not to send a child to therapy requires several areas of consideration. First, is the issue serious enough to warrant seeing a therapist? If yes, how do I choose a therapist? Once my child is in therapy, what role do I, as the parent, play in the process?

And last, how do I know if the therapy is working?

When To See a Therapist When people consult with me about therapy, the first question I generally ask is, how often does the problem occur?

It is normal and developmentally appropriate for children to act out or be anxious on occasion. (In fact, when a child is “perfect,” never acts out, or never exhibits emotional distress, that is often a sign that things are not okay.) But when issues occur frequently and interfere with a child’s functioning or happiness, that could indicate that therapy would be helpful. If ten-year-old Avrumi got angry and threw something, that doesn’t necessarily mean that therapy is needed. But if eleven-year-old Yaakov has been very anxious for the last couple months, has been avoiding school a few times a week, and on some days refuses to leave the house at all, the frequency of the problem would indicate that intervention is needed.

Another major factor is how intense the problem is. There are some issues that demand immediate attention, like if

the child is a danger to themselves or others. There are other situations that, while not dangerous, should be treated sooner rather than later; one example would be a child who is experiencing social difficulties, and the teacher reports that the child doesn’t have any friends. Such a problem, if not dealt with quickly, could affect a child in the future and require more serious intervention than if addressed while the child is young. In addition, issues that affect happiness and self-esteem should probably be addressed sooner rather than later.

How To Choose a Therapist

The first criterion for choosing a therapist is that they be a licensed professional. There are often people who are not licensed, and happen to know some therapeutic techniques and have had some stories of success. However, a licensed professional is held to a professional standard and has accountability. They are also required to continue training, which helps them to stay current in best practices.

When a child needs therapy, what role does the school play?

When a child is in therapy, should the child’s rebbi or teacher be included in the process?

One of the first things I ask parents when they come for an initial consult is if the issue is showing up at home, at school or both. This will tell me if the case will require school involvement or not.

In a perfect world, the therapist would always have the opportunity to get the perspective of the rebbi or teacher, but in real life, that’s not always possible. However, for issues that are presenting in school, it will be necessary.

When I reach out to teachers, principals or resource room staff, I’ll ask how the child is performing socially, academically and behaviorally.

(These three areas usually impact on one another.)

I’m not looking for labels or diagnoses. I want to hear facts. What do they see in school? What does the child do in the classroom? How often does it happen, and how extreme are the behaviors? I want to hear examples from the people who are “on the ground.” All this information is extremely valuable so the therapist can best understand and help the child.

Sometimes it works the other way around — the rebbi or menahel wants to consult with the therapist regarding the best way to help the student. The therapist can then give them strategies to address the issues that are showing up in school. Having the parents, school and therapist working together can be incredibly effective and helpful for the child. (Consent would be required.)

Do I have to tell the school that my child is in therapy?

It’s not necessarily the fact that he’s in therapy that’s important to share; it’s more the fact that he’s struggling. Just like you would inform the school of

any other major upheaval, like a new baby, a loss in the family or even a move, the issue that brought him to therapy would generally fall into that category.

Ask yourself what the collaborative level of your relationship with the school is. You deposit your child in school for eight hours every day; I would hope that you trust them enough to share this information. But if that’s not the case and you don’t have a collaborative relationship with the school, sharing this information could work against you.

So only share it if you can reasonably assume the result will be positive.

This part pains me, because the greatest assets we have are our precious children. They spend the majority of their waking hours at school; it’s a huge loss and very unfortunate if we don’t have a trusting relationship with the school.

Let’s say we tell the school that our child is in therapy. What does “collaboration” look like?

What is the role of the school? What should the therapist do?

The role of the school is to give information to the therapist about what takes place in school, which can be very valuable to the therapist as he continues treating the child.

The role of the therapist is to give the school practical solutions and ideas that will help the child. The therapist presents ideas that are reasonably implementable, and the school makes a reasonable effort to implement them. Not all ideas will be that creative or unique; sometimes the value is just having everyone in the child’s life come together and focus on what can be done to help him.

The therapist you choose should use evidence-based practices. This means that they should use treatments that work, based on the best available research. A good clinician should be able to explain why the suggested treatment works. This is very important, especially since some treatments seem counterintuitive. For example, there is a treatment for OCD called “exposure with response prevention.” This involves the client actually bringing on the anxiety/obsession and then purposefully not engaging in the compulsion that “makes it go away.”

In simple terms, the person is being anxious on purpose. This is an evidence-based treatment, and the clinician should be able to explain why this works so that the client both “buys in” and cooperates with the treatment.

The Parent’s Role When you have a child in therapy, you are not just a taxi driver who brings them to therapy and picks them up afterward. Parents should play a large role in their child’s therapy.

The therapist sees the child for 45 minutes to an hour each week; the rest of the time, they are in school or at home. If parents are involved, therapy techniques can be practiced during the week as well. This will produce quicker and better results. In addition, some evidence-based treatments (such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) involve “homework” between sessions, which the parent can facilitate.

On the other hand, children and adolescents need a safe place to talk. They might hesitate to talk freely to a therapist if they believe everything is going to be repeated to their parents.

Generally, the therapist should manage both of these considerations simultaneously. All parties — the child, therapist and parents — should be clear on what the therapist will and will not share with the parents about what takes place in therapy. A common model is that anything dangerous will be told to parents, while other issues will only be discussed with the parent after consulting with the child. This is case-specific.

What about teenagers? The parent’s role in therapy of older children and adolescents is more complex. On one hand, older children require more independence. They also may have issues that should not be shared with parents (this is casespecific and does not usually apply when there are safety issues). On the other hand, parents want to know what’s “going on” with their child, and may also need to be participants in treatment.

be taken toward those goals. At this session, they will all agree on what will and what won’t be shared with the parents. (Usually, treatment progress and goals will be shared, but private information that is not necessary for the parents to know will not be shared.) With older children, the therapist will usually review what they will be telling parents before they do so in order to maintain the child’s trust. Of course, there are no ironclad rules; these issues are all case-specific.

How You Can Tell If It’s Working A good model for success in therapy is a clear plan with both long-term goals and short-term goals. This allows both the parents and the clinician to assess if therapy is working. Therapy is a dynamic process, and often, goals will be changed or adjusted midway. I find it helpful to review progress every four to six sessions to make sure that everyone is on the right track. I’ve found that doing this helps guide the therapy. In addition, assessing what’s not working can often lead to a clearer picture of what needs to be done.

For example, if a behavioral problem is not responding to treatment, this may be a sign to reevaluate. Maybe the “behavior problem” is actually a learning disability, or anxiety.

Parenting is not for the faint of heart. Today’s parents are heroes. I hope this article removes some of the fear of the unknown regarding the therapy process and helps parents approach therapy with the clarity and sense of purpose that will enable therapy to be as effective as possible.

How can I convince my child or teenager to attend therapy and engage in the process?

As your question indicates, therapy won’t help if the child just shows up and sits there. They have to actually engage in the process by sharing their thoughts and trying new ideas.

It’s not just about showing up; it’s about giving it a shot. A skilled therapist will hopefully know how to draw the child in. Sometimes an incentive program can give the kid the motivation to give therapy a chance; with time, he may come to realize that therapy is making his life better. Also, I wouldn’t tell a child, “You’re going to therapy,” like it’s an indefinite, never-ending thing. I would tell them, “Let’s try it for three sessions and then decide what to do.” Often, by the end of the third session, the child acknowledges the value in the process and is willing to continue. But nothing works 100% of the time. Sometimes the child is simply not ready for therapy.

So what do I do if my child really won’t participate in therapy?

In general, I find it more effective to work with parents than with kids — if they’re open to guidance and committed to the process. They spend much more time with the child and can help the child implement new skills in real time.

Let’s say a child has anxiety or struggles with anger management. A therapist can guide the parent in how to respond to the child to build the necessary skill and resolve the issue.

But this works best with parents who are open to work and truly honest with themselves.

Parenting is both a skill and an art, and like everything in life, some of us are naturally better at it than others. There’s a lot we can do to be a better parent: attend classes or shiurim, read books (a couple of great ones are Parenting From the Inside Out by Daniel Siegel and Raising a Loving Family by Shimon Russell). If we want to be better parents, we need to be focused on our parenting. Where is our mental real estate? Is it mostly on our work, recipes getting through the day? I wish we as parents had a large percent of our mental real estate in parenting. When we’re engaged in growing as a parent, we’ll no doubt find ourselves growing together with our children.

Psychotherapy as we know it today was introduced to the world in the early 1900s, but it was only in the middle of the century, when Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) was developed, that it really took off. WHAT IT IS: Music is the language of the soul. Even outside of a clinical setting, music stirs emotions and lifts spirits, which is why singers and musicians are such a welcome sight at hospitals. Music therapy involves creating or listening to music. It’s appropriate for all ages, and no musical background or talent is needed. Music therapy can be done on a one-on-one basis or in a group setting.

It’s a popular form of group therapy in hospitals, nursing homes and rehab centers. The goal of music therapy is to explore the client’s inner world, including psychological, social and spiritual components, using music as a form of communication.

HOW IT WORKS: At the initial consultation, the therapist assesses the client’s musical interests and abilities. During sessions, the client engages in various music-related activities, such as humming or singing a favorite childhood song.

The client may also improvise with various musical instruments, or sing as part of a choir when in a group setting. The client and therapist then discuss the emotions or memories that the song or playing evoked.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: The benefits of music as a form of therapy were recognized in the aftermath of World War II, when hospital directors saw firsthand how injured and traumatized veterans improved both physically and emotionally after visits by local musicians. Many studies over the decades proved that music therapy is highly effective in lowering stress levels, and helps to build confidence and social skills. It’s also a powerful tool for reducing perceived pain levels, and often is used to help treat cancer patients.

WHAT IT IS: Gestalt therapy focuses on the here and now, rather than on past emotions. It helps clients explore how experiences that occurred in the past make them feel in the present.

Gestalt therapy works with the premise that it’s not enough to talk about past experiences. Instead, healing can only be achieved when past emotions are actively expressed in the present. “Gestalt” is derived from a German word that loosely translates into English as “whole” or “put together.” Gestalt therapy is based on the theory that a person is much more than just one character trait, episode or diagnosis, and that for a client to achieve complete healing, they must achieve complete self-awareness. As clients begin to understand themselves better, they are able to appreciate how their actions affect themselves and others.

HOW IT WORKS: Gestalt therapy, which can be done in individual or group settings, involves more than simply talking. Sessions often include engaging in physical experiences, such as role-playing, re-enactment and drawing. There are several main Gestalt techniques from which the therapist can choose based on the client’s needs. One of these techniques is called the empty chair technique. The client talks to an empty chair that represents a particular person they need to speak with, perhaps even themselves. By practicing what they would like to say, the client is able to resolve past conflicts in the present. Another exercise is exaggeration. As the client speaks, the therapist observes their body language, noting physical gestures like slouching, frowning or bouncing their leg. The therapist asks the client to exaggerate this particular movement and to explore the emotions attached to it. These exercises are meant to help clients identify emotions they would normally ignore so that they can reconnect to their whole selves.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: Critics of Gestalt therapy note that this therapy may take longer than other forms of psychotherapy to result in positive change. The reason for this is that Gestalt therapy sessions typically lack structure, making it difficult for clients to connect with it. All therapy relies on a certain amount of trust between client and therapist, but Gestalt therapy seems to demand that bit more trust than other therapies — for instance, clients may be uncomfortable that the therapist is paying such close attention to their body language.

Clients may also find it hard to connect with Gestalt techniques that feel unnatural.

Nonetheless, studies have shown that Gestalt therapy is successful at helping clients become better at resolving issues on their own, take responsibility for their actions, make peace with their past, and in general, gain greater self-awareness and self-confidence.

WHAT IT IS: Sandplay therapy is a form of play therapy that is used alongside traditional talk therapy to help clients understand their inner world. Since it relies on nonverbal cues, it’s most often used to treat young children who don’t have the ability to express themselves. Teenagers and even adults can also benefit from sandplay therapy, especially if they have difficulty expressing their emotions.

HOW IT WORKS: The client is presented with a tray of sand and a selection of figurines and other miniature toys. The client then builds a small “world” in the tray to mimic what is going on in their life. The therapist then leads a discussion about the setup in the tray. Together, the client and therapist analyze symbolic choices and arrangements that the client made. This discussion helps clients make a connection between the world they built in the sand and their own inner world. After the discussion, the client often chooses to make changes to their sand arrangement. Making changes in their sand world empowers clients to make changes in their real world.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: Studies show that children and adults who suffer from disabilities and language difficulties can especially benefit from sandplay therapy, as can other people who may be hard to treat through conventional therapy. Research also shows that children with chronic illnesses can use sandplay therapy to reduce anxiety and behavioral issues.

Sandplay therapy shouldn’t be confused with sand tray therapy. The two are similar in setup, but in sandplay therapy, the therapist is not at all involved while the client is arranging their sand world.

WHAT IT IS: Neurofeedback is a type of biofeedback (similar to taking one’s body temperature and blood pressure). It’s also known as EEG biofeedback. It uses a computer-based program to assess the client’s brain activity, producing feedback in real time. This feedback is called electroencephalography, or EEG, and it looks like waves on a chart, like on a heart monitor. Just as a thermometer provides feedback on body temperature, neurofeedback provides information on brain activity.

During the session, the client wears a cap or band on their head that is attached to electrodes, which measure their brain waves. Neurofeedback is non-invasive, pain-free and safe, and is suitable for clients as young as three years of age. A session lasts between 30 to 60 minutes, during which the client watches a video, listens to music or plays a video game. Treatment normally takes 30 to 40 sessions, with two or three sessions a week.

HOW IT WORKS: The human brain has neuroplasticity — the extraordinary ability to change itself biologically. Neurofeedback helps encourage and speed up the process of change. When the brain adapts successfully, the results are typically long-term.

At the initial consultation, the clinician assesses the client’s needs. Brain cells communicate via brain waves, which have two properties: frequency and amplitude. Frequency is how fast the brain waves travel, and amplitude measures the energy transferred by the waves. The results of this EEG show which areas of the brain are functioning at the correct speed and amplitude, and which can do with improvement. The EEG helps the clinician diagnose the client’s condition scientifically. People suffering from anxiety, for instance, have a lot of fast brain wave activity, while those with ADHD have a lot of slow brain wave activity, especially in certain areas of the brain. Once the EEG has been analyzed, the clinician can set treatment goals to target specific weaknesses.

During each session, the EEG reads the client’s brain waves while the client is busy with the chosen activity. When the EEG picks up that the client’s brain is meeting the goals for the session, it rewards the brain with positive feedback. For instance, if a client with ADHD is focusing on the video properly, the screen will become larger. If the brain is not meeting the goals, the EEG will provide negative feedback. So if the client loses focus, the screen may become distorted until the client refocuses. During a session, there are thousands of opportunities for the brain to self-correct and be rewarded. When neurofeedback is done over a long period of time, the brain is gradually trained to achieve the brain waves that have been set as goals.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY: Neurofeedback was first developed in the 1960s but gained traction as a form of mental health therapy only in the last decade or so. Although there has been some research, neurofeedback is still considered a new therapy.

Research is ongoing and currently deemed inconclusive, and many experts are doubtful that it achieves anything more than a placebo effect.

However, proponents of neurofeedback say that the EEG results speak for themselves. Clinicians perform an extensive EEG every few weeks to check the brain’s progress, and clients themselves often begin to report improvement after just a few sessions. Some research shows that for certain conditions, neurofeedback therapy can achieve success rates as high as 75 to 80%. Children and teenagers seem to especially benefit from neurofeedback since neuroplasticity is at its peak during these years.

It was a rainy, chilly fall day. I was walking to my next client’s house when my phone rang. It was a service coordinator calling from one of the agencies I work for.

I listened for a minute. “No,” I said firmly. I could not accept the case of a two-year-old girl with Trisomy 18. I hardly had any experience with this condition. My schedule was full, and I already had multiple children on my caseload with serious diagnoses. There was no way I could take on another.

But the service coordinator brusquely informed me that she already added this child to my caseload and was confident that I would be able to help her. The client, Chaya, was to receive four sessions of therapy a week. I told the service coordinator that I would take the case on a trial basis. In my mind, this was just a formality; I was sure that I would give the case up at the earliest possibility.

Before my first session with Chaya, I tried to learn everything I could about Trisomy 18, a rare condition which occurs in 1 in 2,500 individuals in the United States. Unlike Down syndrome, which also is caused by an extra chromo130

some, the developmental issues that are caused by Trisomy 18 are associated with a number of medical complications that are life-threatening in the early years of life.

Armed with information, I packed my bag with a number of sensory toys, board books and puppets. I felt ready to take on the challenge.

But nothing could have prepared me for the sight that met my eyes when I walked into Chaya’s house.

Chaya was lying helplessly on a blanket on the dining room table, attached to a feeding tube. She appeared much younger than her chronological age. When I came in, her mother lovingly repositioned her so that Chaya could look in my direction. I was shocked at the extent of Chaya’s disability, but mechanically turned on my favorite playlist of calming children’s music and began to work with Chaya. Using hand-over-hand assistance, I gently encouraged Chaya to feel the colorful sensory blocks. Though the rubber blocks were bumpy, Chaya’s eyes reflected enjoyment as she fingered them. She also gazed at the pictures of the large Brown Bear Brown Bear board book as I sang the text rhythmically.

It wasn’t about the session beginning or ending; time did not matter. We were united together on a divine mission.

Chaya appeared to study the bright and colorful animals, but due to poor muscle and neck control, she seemed to be straining to look at the book.

With some positioning and handling, I was able to keep Chaya comfortable and at eye using a soft cushion that was on the table. Puppet shows were a hit with Chaya as well, and I assisted her in feeling the different textures of the soft puppets. I tried to engage Chaya using as many senses as possible to give her the full experience of sensory play. Though Chaya was limited due to her condition, she was still a child, with a desire to engage in realtime play.

After the first session, I knew there was no way I could ever give up this case. Chaya, little fragile Chaya, had captured my heart. I silently vowed to do everything within my power to help her. I was lucky to be working alongside both an OT and PT who guided me in helping Chaya develop core strength and basic hand manipulation skills. A few months after beginning to work with Chaya, we had a reason to celebrate: With minimal assistance, Chaya was able to knock down a tower of blocks. Chaya’s face radiated joy, and I was ecstatic with the progress. Chaya’s mother mumbled something shyly that I couldn’t quite understand. There was hope.

All the members of the therapy team were very supportive of Chaya. There was an outpouring of love that came along with dedication and hard work. We used to meet each other in Chaya’s home and linger to discuss Chaya’s preferences, strengths, accomplishments and new goals. It wasn’t about the session beginning or ending; time did not matter.

We were united together on a divine mission.

Chaya was the youngest of a large brood, and I connected strongly to her and her mother as well as her siblings. Every Wednesday, the same scene would repeat itself: Chaya’s mother would invite me into her warm kitchen to do the mitzvah of hafrashas challah (she always took challah earlier in the day while preparing the dough for previous batches).

Chaya’s mother would hand me a wrinkled piece of paper and ask me to daven for her friend’s child who was not well.

Never once did she mention her own plight. I would say the bracha with feeling and tears in my eyes. I davened in that small kitchen in a way that I had never davened before. Before I left each time, I told Chaya’s mother that she and Chaya were teaching me much more than I was teaching Chaya.

One of the many benefits of working with Chaya was that her mother was always ready and waiting to begin each therapy session. Most nights, Chaya didn’t sleep well, if at all, but when it came time for her to do her work, her mother would ask me to turn on Chaya’s favorite song and insist that Chaya was capable of joining in. They never missed a therapy session; even when Chaya’s mother attended the Siyum Hashas, she made sure Chaya wouldn’t miss her slot.

thargic during the sessions. On one occasion, she cried a lot.

I walked around with her in my arms, singing to her and rocking her rhythmically, in order to try and calm her. Her mother told me that she felt something wasn’t right with Chaya. Sure enough, later that afternoon, Chaya was admitted to the hospital for a short stay.

The weeks turned into months. Time has a way of rushing by like that. I can’t say that Chaya progressed at a steady pace. It was a slow process. When Chaya smiled at a song she liked listening to, that was progress. When Chaya was able to grasp a small toy for a short time, independently, it was a cause for celebration. When Chaya was alert enough to be able to track objects with her eyes, that was progress, too.

As the year drew to a close, Chaya’s mother needed to explore options in order to put Chaya in a school-based program. Chaya was aging out of the home-based early intervention program that she and her family had come to know and love. Once again, Chaya’s mother was put to the test, and she valiantly argued Chaya’s case and advocated for placement in a top special needs center. The center they chose was renowned for their excellent program and dedicated therapists and teachers.

At our last session, I couldn’t bear to say goodbye. I handed Chaya a new soft pink plush elephant that had become one of Chaya’s favorite toys. I softly whispered, “I’ll be by soon to visit.” I left quickly, my eyes misted with tears. Chaya had touched me deeply, and I knew my outlook on life and appreciation for life itself would never be the same again.

From time to time I send Chaya’s mother a message to check in and see how they’re doing. When I drive down Chaya’s block, waves of nostalgia wash over me. I play the “what if” game and wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t taken the case.

As for Chaya... Little Chaya, despite all of her limitations, is soaring high. Way above what could be expected of an angel without wings to fly.

IN HISTORY THE COUCH For starters, the couch was invented in 1895.

THE SOFA

Run that by me again? 1895 is relatively recent history.

What on earth did they do before that? Well, the “couch” may have been invented by one Jay Wellingdon Couch in the abovementioned year, but the “sofa” was conceived many moons before that. Phew, and here I was imagining being called a couch potato by generations of couch-less people circa the nineteenth century!

Sofas have actually been around since the times of the Pharaohs, but they were far from today’s tufted numbers. They were more like sturdy wooden benches. The Romans, with their focus on the comforts of life, did use feathers and wool to stuff cushions on steel frames. Then came the Dark Ages and its miseries, and sofas slipped off the world stage for a great many years, until well into the 16th century.

Even then, sofas were only something to perch on. Until sofas as we we know them were invented, furniture was purely utilitarian, and all seating options kept one’s body posture rigid and mostly upright.

The late 1700s brought the sofa here to the US of A, with the emergence of the colonial upper class and their opportunity for leisure. It was a new way of life; until then, “comfortable” was defined as “able to be consoled” rather than “sinking into something plush”!

A COUCH BY ANY OTHER NAME… …would be just as comfy!

That long, upholstered piece of furniture for several people to sit on has a great many monikers, among them settee, sofa, divan, chaise lounge, chesterfield, loveseat, settle, ottoman, put-you-up, daybed, davenport, studio couch, sectional and canape.

To generalize, they say “couch” in North America, Australia, South Africa and Ireland, and “sofa” and “settee” in the United Kingdom and India.

COUCH MEANS WHAT? A couch is a comfy furniture piece. It also means the den of an animal, namely the otter. And being that couches are much associated with mental health these days, on the couch would mean receiving psychoanalytic treatment.

In the verb department, to couch would mean to lie down to rest or sleep, or to wait in ambush. Also, it means to phrase your words in a certain manner, like, couch it in strong terms, or couch it gently. In less common verbiage, couch would also be to embroider by laying down a thread and fastening it with small stitches at regular intervals, or to place or hold [something] level and pointed forward, ready for use.

I challenge you to spin a tale with all of the above!

COUCHES GONE WEIRD

What, you thought Harrod’s was only for buying small items in order to parade around town with a Harrod’s bag forevermore? You can also buy this cuddly thing there, sure to soften any room and bring conversation to life!

COUCH VS. SOFA The word sofa comes from the Arabic suffah, meaning bench.

Know your comfy places! Although now used almost interchangeably, couches officially refer to armless, cushioned seats while sofas tend to have arms and are usually larger than couches.

But don’t be off-putting by correcting peoples’ usage because we Americans just use “couch” for everything!

Over in Britain and in India, however, they’re referred to as sofas or settees.

COUCH FACTS The loveseat was made to accommodate the broad skirts of 17th century women.

The comfortable-but-still-formal Chesterfield sofa is named for Lord Philip Stanhope, the fourth Earl of Chesterfield.

The idiom couch potato is owed to one 1970s comic artist who drew sedentary characters who idled their time on couches so they resembled more veggie than human.
