WARMED MY HEART

(Re: Where There’s Hope, Issue 220) The story by Fayge Holtzberg warmed my heart. Yes, it was raw, real and heart-wrenching, but it was also so inspiring and brought tears to my eyes. Both Chaya’s mother and Fayge herself seem to be such unbelievable people. Thank you so much for a lovely read. A Reader

BUILDING CHARACTER

718.600.6666 Driving you happy!

(Re: Power Tools, Issue 220) We are two sisters who would like to share how delighted we are with the Power Tools serial by Esty Heller. It’s so refreshing to read about characters who seek to improve. Unfortunately, the trend in fiction today is to use serials to “spread awareness” about extremely unhealthy behavior and terrible middos. Thank you for publishing a serial where the characters actually overcome their nisyonos. Thank you for a beautiful publication. Hadassah G. and Penina K.

STANDING OVATION

(Re: Power Tools, Issue 220) Do you hear that loud noise? It’s the entire Boro Park, applauding Riva for finally having the courage to do what’s right! It was also the perfect week to show Fraidy’s progress with therapy (although I do wonder if the rapid results are realistic). Thank you to Esty Heller and the entire team at The Boro Park View for an amazing job on this serial. I can’t wait to see what happens next week! B. Persky W E A T H E R

MOUNDS OF APPRECIATION

(Re: Close to Home, Issue 219) As a parent of a kitah alef child, I found the piece about the parent-son duo who are both rebbe’im so beautiful to read. Teaching kitah alef takes enormous skill and bucketloads of warmth and patient teaching, and hearing about it from the perspective of the rebbe’im was very eye-opening. Kudos to kitah alef rebbe’im everywhere! A Grateful Parent

A SECOND LOOK

(Re: Why We Go Into Your House, Inbox, Issue 216) To add to the discussion about people entering others’ homes under construction without permission: I think the root of this phenomenon is a general sense of entitlement. Some of the letter writers even went so far as to say they do it because otherwise they’ll “never get to see the house,” indicating that they believe it’s their right to see it. The “entitlement attitude” is so pervasive that we don’t even see what’s wrong with it. As for the fact that construction workers and others who are in the house with permission get to see it and may even share pictures — we can’t control the world, but we should try to control ourselves. C.K.

YOUR SAY SAFETY FIRST

I would like to make readers aware of an easy and critical safety pointer. Years ago, our baby fell down a flight of stairs indoors, and we called Hatzolah. Baruch Hashem, the baby was fine, but the Hatzolah volunteers recommended that we put carpeting on our stairs. As renters, we had never thought of doing this. We reached out to our landlord, and though we did need to pay a substantial percentage of the fee, we got the carpeting job done. When the carpeting was installed, I watched the installers put down a thick layer of foam and then the carpet on top. Years later, a different kid fell down the same flight of stairs. We took him to the doctor to make sure he was okay, and baruch Hashem, he was. The pediatrician said, “Wow, it’s a good thing your stairs were carpeted.” Yes, we have a baby gate and are vigilant. Still, things happen, and carpeting can make a difference in the outcome. May Hashem keep us all safe. Anonymous THE BORO PARK VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS. PARSHAS MISHPATIM Our Source of Life

The pasuk says, “ V’eileh hamishpatim asher tasim lifneihem — And these are the ordinances you should set before them” (Shemos 21:1). Why does the Torah use a language of “ tasim lifneihem,” setting forth? It should say “ telamed lahem,” you should teach them.

“Torah refines us to the point where even a young boy of fourteen will go to such lengths to avoid stealing” She told Rebbetzin Kanievsky about the young boy who had told them to get off at the wrong stop, and how he had gone out of his way to fix his mistake. “Look at the power of Torah!” Rebbetzin Kanievsky exclaimed. “Torah refines us to the point where even a young boy of fourteen will go to such lengths to avoid stealing.” The meeting made an impact on Tamar. If this was the way Torah Yidden behaved, if this was what Torah could do to someone, she wanted a part in it. Thus began her journey to Yiddishkeit. Tamar quenched her thirsting neshamah until she became a genuine Bas Yisrael. Today, Tamar lives a true Torah life, as mother and wife of a growing family. * * * * *

The Torah is not a collection of laws or a manual of advanced studies for us to learn; Torah is life. The mitzvos and halachos are life itself! Unlike psychology, science or medicine, Torah actually changes a person, refining and building him with middos tovos and yiras Shamayim. Living a Torah life has the capacity to take a base person and elevate him to nobility — the trademark of a Yid. The halachos of the Torah were not given to us just to be “taught” as knowledge; rather, they were intended to be “set forth” as a guiding light, providing direction for life. Ki heim chayeinu, v’orech yameinu! 58

CROWNS FABRICATED IN-HOUSE, SAME DAY

WHAT IS A DAY? A day is a period of 24 hours — the span from one midnight to the next. But for some, a day is more than that. For some, a day is a block of time that neither begins nor ends. It’s a cycle of endless doing, unlimited giving — and immeasurable impact. That is how lifesavers operate. When a Yid, anywhere in the world, is thrown into a medical crisis, no call is left unmade, no treatment is left unexplored, and no action is left undone in the quest for a cure. That is Chaim Medical. Against all odds.

CHAIM MEDICAL RESOURCE IS AN ORGANIZATION DEVOTED TO SAVING LIVES, 24 HOURS A DAY, 365 DAYS A YEAR.

ALL IN A DAY’S WORK Most of Chaim Medical’s services fly under the radar. Their work, however, is limitless, and the impact is far-reaching. They have provided support to countless patients and their families, and saved thousands of lives. Every case is approached with meticulous research, personalized care, and a fighting spirit — to see it through until the best possible outcome. With multiple offices and over 90 employees, Chaim Medical Resource encompasses 21 medical divisions, each member an expert in their field. Divisions include, but aren’t limited to, oncology, genetics, complex pediatrics, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics, and many more. Cases run the gamut from “ordinary” emergencies to the one-in-a-million medical mysteries that require a vast amount of knowledge and resources. All cases, however, receive the golden standard of care that Chaim Medical is known for. Aside from medical guidance, Chaim Medical has ancillary divisions to help patients navigate the technical and practical obstacles of the medical world. They also work tirelessly to ensure that no detail is overlooked in getting patients the best possible treatment and care.

THOUSANDS OF CALLS. THREE PILLARS OF CARE. With specialists in every area of care, Chaim Medical provides services and assistance to patients and their families facing a medical crisis.

REFERRALS

RESEARCH

Matching a patient to the right doctor is critical and can spell the difference between life and death. That’s why our advisors thoroughly analyze each case and consider all relevant factors when referring a patient to a doctor.

Standard medical care is sometimes limited to common procedures. That’s why our experts delve into the complexities of each case, studying its possible causes, symptoms, and repercussions, to determine the best course of treatment. They leave no stone unturned in the quest for a cure.

LIMITLESS EFFORT REQUIRES FUNDS TO MATCH. To hire the most skilled and dedicated team, procure the most advanced equipment, coordinate the most complex operations, and foster the most critical relationships — all of which translate into saving the most lives — Chaim Medical’s annual budget exceeds $8,000,000. This year’s campaign, Against All Odds, highlights the lengths to which Chaim Medical goes for every one of their patients, leaving no stone unturned, at every hour of the day or night, and never giving up. That is Chaim Medical’s mission. Chaim Medical Resource is always there for anyone in need. And now, they need your help. Chaim Medical Resource needs crucial funds to continue helping Cholei Yisroel recover and lead healthy lives. Twenty-four hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Because life savers never take a break.

ADVOCACY AND CASE MANAGEMENT Overwhelmed patients are in no position to advocate for themselves. That’s why case managers work directly with hospitals and medical professionals to advocate on behalf of their patients and ensure they get the best possible care.

“My father needed to be transferred to another hospital, but the hospital he was at was giving us a very difficult time. We needed their cooperation because my father was attached to lots of equipment. Chaim Medical got involved, and within hours, the transfer was underway, with both hospitals working for a smooth transit.” “I was stuck on Shabbos with an eye emergency and didn’t know if anyone would pick up the phone. Totally lost, I dialed Chaim Medical. They spoke to my doctor and reassured me that he was extremely skilled and I should go ahead with the emergency procedure he recommended. They saved my vision!”

Federal Disaster Aid for Erev Sukkos Storm Headed to Brooklyn Brooklyn could be seeing as much as $12.5 million in aid from the federal government, now that President Joe Biden has approved Governor Kathy Hochul’s request for a major disaster declaration in connection with the torrential downpours and flooding that took place on Erev Sukkos. Brooklyn, Nassau and Westchester counties will all be receiving funding that will be earmarked for recovery and reconstruction efforts, which can include repairs to public buildings and infrastructure, emergency protective measures and debris removal. The United States Small Business Administration began offering low-interest loans to those impacted by the rains and flooding back in December. “I’m committed to securing every possible dollar of federal aid to help the people of New York,” said Hochul. “The major storm in September caused significant damage, and we’ll continue our efforts to help communities recover and rebuild.” The storm left some homeowners with more than a foot of water in their basements, and impacted over a dozen subway lines. More than eight inches of rain fell in Brooklyn during the storm, the tail end of Tropical Storm Ophelia, which wrought havoc throughout the east coast.

stations, including the 18th Avenue stop, with an equal number scheduled for this year. The Fort Hamilton station is one of thirteen on the schedule for the first quarter of 2024, and the MTA has promised to use the 55-hour weekend closure to “clean, scrub, scrape, paint, brighten, retile, refurbish, renovate and renew” the station “from top to bottom.” More than just a deep clean, the MTA has on its agenda items such as changing lightbulbs, repairing HVAC systems, unclogging drains, securing platforms and stairs, and swapping out outdated and damaged signs. The MTA has already replaced 91,960 square feet of wall tile, installed 17,030 new LED lighting fixtures, and repainted 1.6 million square feet of station surfaces in its renovation efforts. MTA officials said the goal of the project is to give commuters better station environments. “Improving customer satisfaction is a top priority, and the new Re-NEW-vation program has been proven as a great way to bring tangible enhancements to customers where they are,” said MTA Chief Customer Officer Shanifah Rieara. “With this new list of Re-NEW-vations, customers can look forward to cleaner and brighter stations in their neighborhoods.”

Renovations Coming to Fort Hamilton Subway Station Subway riders who use the Fort Hamilton Parkway F train station will find their commutes more comfortable, with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority promising a weekend overhaul that will take place in the coming weeks. The MTA’s Re-NEW-vation program has already freshened up more than 50

Also on the MTA’s list of upgrades are replacing aging trains with new R211T subway cars. Governor Kathy Hochul rode the new European-style gangway subway cars when they debuted on the C line last week. In addition to having wider doors that boost accessibility, the cars have security cameras, and lead directly into each other instead of the closed door, individual train car design that subway riders have grown accustomed to over the years. Mayor Eric Adams praised the cars as a major upgrade for the subway, which he described as the city’s backbone. “More New Yorkers are riding our subways, and we’re back to pre-pandemic ridership peaks,” said Adams. “Make no mistake: We have more work to do. But these new trains — and the 1,000 subway cars we’ve already installed cameras in — are a great next step toward creating a safer, smoother subway experience for all New Yorkers.” ABC News reported that only two of the R211T cars are running on the C line at this time, with MTA officials counting on congestion pricing to bring in the funds needed to acquire more trains. Speaking at a press conference as the new cars were rolled out, Hochul dismissed the notion that lawsuits filed against congestion pricing could derail the plans to buy more of the new trains. “It will happen,” said a confident Hochul. “We get sued every day. I say get in line. “We have done everything possible to bring this to a reality,” added the governor. “Again, change is hard for people.”

Scam Alert: Fake QR Codes Popping Up on Parking Tickets and Meters Con artists have found a new way to hack victims’ financial data, using bogus QR codes on parking tickets and meters. Unsuspecting motorists who pay the violations unknowingly give scammers access to their financial and personal information. In some instances, the tickets have QR codes that are scanned by victims, while in other cases, motorists are directed to a fake payment site. Drivers should be leery of any site that directs them to Venmo, Zelle or PayPal to pay for a parking violation, as well as payment sites that don’t begin with “https,” or official government websites that don’t end with “.gov.” Scammers have reportedly been targeting vehicles with out-of-state license plates, working on the assumption that visitors may be less familiar with local laws. They have also set their sights on parking meters and voucher machines, according to the Better Business Bureau, using similar tactics. In order to avoid being conned, motorists are advised to pay for parking by using the actual meter or machine, instead of scanning a code, particularly those that open to shortened links without identifying the actual website being accessed. Downloading a QR scanner with extra protection mechanisms can also catch scams, suspicious links and other potential traps set by con artists.

Statewide Campaign Promotes Lithium-Ion Battery Safety With lithium-ion battery fires causing major damage and even death, Governor Kathy Hochul announced a new campaign to raise awareness about the batteries, which are being used in an ever-growing list of electrical items. Electric bikes, electric scooters, hoverboards, smartphones, laptops, toys and power tools are just some of the items that are powered by lithium-ion batteries. Uncertified or improperlycertified batteries have become a major hazard, with more than 250 fires reported in New York City alone in 2023, resulting in over 130 injuries and at least 18 fatalities. The state’s Buy Safe, Charge Safe campaign, which began on February 1, aims to educate consumers on the safe use, storage and disposal of lithium-ion batteries. “As our technology develops, sometimes at a blistering pace, it can make our lives easier and more enjoyable,” said Hochul. “It can also bring risks we’re not accustomed to, and our first line of defense is awareness.” The campaign will highlight things to know when buying an item that uses a lithium-ion battery. The state’s new consumer safety guide contains additional information, including fire warning signs and knowing how to respond to a possible fire. Consumers are advised to only buy products with lithiumion batteries from reputable manufacturers, to look for a safety seal from a recognized entity such as the Underwriters Laboratory (UL), and to check for recalls before purchasing any item. Other safety tips include never leaving a charging battery unattended, unplugging a battery once fully charged, and not using a battery that feels overly hot, has a bad odor, is making noises or smoking. Because lithium-ion battery fires spread extremely quickly and cannot be controlled by fire extinguishers or water, in the event of a fire, leave the area immediately, and call 911. Hochul has also proposed a ban on uncertified or improperly certified lithium-ion batteries in e-bikes and e-scooters.

CHAPTER 43 Lani shares her feelings of overwhelm with Chaim Tzvi and revels in her own vulnerability. Fraidy stands up to Chevi’s taunting. Riva quits her job.

he fear crept up on Riva in the sneaky, unwitting form of a Shabbos sweater. She stood in front of the washing machine, staring at the remains of a huge smiley sticker that someone — who?! — had pasted on the back of Eli’s sweet little pointelle top. She peeled. She scrubbed. She scratched and rubbed and sprayed and peeled some more. She washed it again. And then ran another cycle, going for broke with a hot load. After two hours of subjecting the garment to every laundry hack in her arsenal, Riva acknowledged that it was no use. The sticky, flaky residue clung to the fabric stubbornly, and the yellow stains remained etched in the light blue weave. And as she stood over the bathroom sink, processing the fact that the sweater was irrevocably damaged, terror seized her heart. I need to buy him a new Shabbos top. 82

Overnight, the thought of buying an outfit for the baby had turned into a calamity. This top had cost her $55. Buying a new one meant dipping into their hard-earned savings, setting them back by $55. Today it was Eli’s sweater. Tomorrow it would be pants for Shaya, new glasses for Fraidy, and an umbrella for Yaakov, because his had gotten lost, and what could he do, there was a week of steady rain on the forecast. She abandoned the baby’s sweater in the sink. There was laundry to fold and supper to cook. And yet, she couldn’t bring herself to address any of those menial tasks. What am I doing home? She was supposed to be at work! She was supposed to be sitting in a professional environment, surrounded by her colleagues of so many years, faithfully earning her salary. What crazy, idiotic, impulsive thing had she done?

Next, potatoes. Peel, slice, season, cover — into the oven. An hour and a half later, she opened the oven to remove the lid from the potatoes to allow them to crisp — and gaped. The food was raw. The oven was stone cold. * * * * *

“I’M THE ONE WHO’S TAKING OVER THE RESPONSIBILITY NOW, SO IT’S PROBABLY ENOUGH FOR ONLY ONE OF US TO WORRY”

“I’m afraid it’s the igniter,” Yaakov concluded, after restarting the oven multiple times. “The igniter,” Riva echoed, like it was a bad word. She’d hastily transferred the food to the Betty Crocker, in shifts, so supper was a little delayed, but nobody went hungry. Now Yaakov was back home and had issued his non-professional but probably accurate verdict. “Forget a down payment,” Riva said tersely. “When our savings run out, how will we afford to buy shoes for the kids?” Yaakov stood up from the floor and brushed off his pants. “Riva,” he said firmly. “Listen to me. You’re having phantom pain, but you know you did the right thing.” “I’m so…” “So what? Worried? Okay, I get that. But look, I’m the one who’s taking over the responsibility now, so it’s probably enough for only one of us to worry. And I’m not all that worried, by the way. It’s going to be tough in the beginning, but I hope to land some work soon, and we’ll make it, we’ll be okay.” Riva kept her eyes on the oven display. “You worked hard for so many years,” Yaakov said. “It’s my turn now. Please, just leave it to me and try not to be stressed about it.” She gave a robotic nod and said, “I’ll go get the kids and start baths.” * * * * * Day Two as a SAHM

Today I was productive. I cleaned the bathroom. I also cooked supper. I made eggplant broccoli rollups and a mushroom pepper letcho, which took a lot of time to make, but hey, I’m a SAHM now, time is on my side. So the rollups are done, and also rice and sesame chicken, the real way, following an actual recipe, and I even cleaned and chopped scallions for garnish, like in all those magazines. After that I washed the kitchen floor and tackled a large pile of ironing. It’s a real pleasure to maintain a clean house. The kids will be home shortly, and I will greet them in a clean house with hearty food. I used a lot of pots and pans. I did not use my oven. I will not look at my oven. Who needs an oven anyway? Riva put away her imaginary log at the sound of the doorbell ringing. “Who is it?” 86

Static crackled over the intercom, and through it, a voice. “Maddie.” Maddie? Oh, right! Maddie had texted her last week to tell her that she was ready to come back to work, but asked if she could come Tuesday afternoon instead of Thursday. That had been in a previous era, when Riva had still been employed at Kleenup and coming home with a paycheck every week, and she’d said yes. Now she blinked as the cleaning lady hobbled into her house. My house is spotless. Am I really going to spend money to have someone clean my clean house? No, really not. The cash in her purse had suddenly become sacred, a thing to ration. “Linen?” Maddie asked, in total innocence. “Um, no. I mean, maybe. Okay, fine. Not the master, I did that on Sunday. You can strip the linen in the kids’ room, I guess.” She’d have to keep her for at least an hour, and then, maybe… Lani? The phone rang as she was about to dial. Call from, La-ni… Eisdorf. “Hey, I should’ve thought about Moshiach. I was just dialing you.” “K, but I called first, so let me ask you…” “No, wait, this is important. Quick question.” “Hello, I called you, so I go first!” Riva had to smile at this good old sisterly banter. She couldn’t even pinpoint what exactly had changed, or when, but it was one big relief to have her sister back in her life, almost like in the past. She’d missed this so terribly. Lani accepted her own ruling and trilled, “Gueeeeess what?” “Nu?” “We’re moving! Like, in two weeks! Isn’t it crazy? We’re moving by hook or by crook, because that’s when Andy flies off, and I can only pray it shouldn’t be by crook. But anyway, if we’re moving, that means we need to book a… cue trumpets…” She waited a beat, to allow Riva to finish her sentence, but Riva’s mouth had gone dry, her eyes glued to her dead oven. “Are you there?” Lani asked. “I’m here. I guess you want to book a cleaning crew.” “You got it!” “Right.” “So?” “Look, Lani, I know you’re thinking about Kleenup. But the truth is, if you want to book a crew from them, you’ll need to call the office. I don’t work there anymore.” It was Lani’s turn to go silent. Then, in a breathy voice, she said, “Wow.” Riva told her the story. She choked up as she finished. “And that leaves me officially unemployed. I made eggplant rollups today.” Lani absorbed the news, and then said, “Hey, I want to ask

you something.” “Wait, I want to ask you something.” Okay, not again. “I’ll let you go first this time,” Lani acquiesced. “Right. So actually, the thing I want to ask you is the reason I was about to call you. Maddie came back, and honestly, I don’t feel up to having her right now.” “Oh my. Riva. Stop.” “What?” “Look. I’m the last person to tell you what to do, but… don’t, Riva. I know exactly how you feel. All I can say is, it doesn’t help. And you’ll regret it.” Riva sniffled in response. Lani pressed her case until Riva agreed to at least wait another week before telling Maddie anything. “But on the days you don’t need her, I would like to take her,” Lani said. “I desperately need her, actually. Now, for the next two weeks until we move, just to keep this basement in livable condition, and on a regular basis after we move. A big house means more to clean. Marbeh nechasim marbeh daageh, huh?” “Yeah, yeah.” Riva went to the kids’ room, and Maddie turned off the vacuum cleaner to hear her. “Lani wants to know if you can go back to work at her house. Twice a week, if possible. What days are you still available?” Maddie wrapped her hands around the vacuum cleaner wand. “Oh, no, no, no, Missus. I’m so sorry, no. I’m not available.” “Oh. Uh, maybe once a week then?” “No. Sorry, no. Maybe sometimes, one day, one day, but I can’t… um, not always, not every week. And also by you, I’m so sorry, Missus. I have… more job. I can only come sometimes.” Goodness! Hadn’t she taken off from work all these weeks because of her broken ankle? Why did she go and find herself a new job without telling her? Riva relayed the message to Lani. Then she hung up quickly and ran downstairs to get Tzippy off the bus. It was sometime during the noisy battle to get anyone to try her eggplant broccoli rollups that she realized: Lani had never told her why she called in the first place.

2. Add the salt, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, and flour. Mix together all ingredients until a soft ball forms. 3. Coat a bowl with the remaining tablespoon of oil, then place the dough in the bowl. Turn the dough a couple times in the bowl to coat it with the oil. Cover the bowl. Let the dough rise for 1 hour or until it doubles in size. 4. Punch down the dough and place it on a clean work surface. Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces and shape them into balls, each weighing approximately 2.5 ounces..

5. Cover the balls with a towel, and let them rest for about 10 minutes. 6. Using a floured rolling pin, roll each ball into a circle that’s about a ¼ inch thick and 4 to 5 inches in diameter. 7. Preheat the oven to 500°. 8. Working in batches, place the rolled-out pitas onto a lined baking sheet (I was able to fit only three or four on each sheet). 9. Bake each pita for 5 minutes on one side, turn over gently and bake another 2 to 3 minutes on the other side. The pita will puff nicely and should be ready. 10. Remove the baked pitas from the oven, and cover them with a clean towel while you work on the rest of the dough.

We all know what it’s like. Whether it’s due to buyer’s remorse, a damaged product, or a wrong size, we’ve all found ourselves heading back to a local store, bag in hand, tail between our legs. But what’s it like for the salespeople and store owners at the other side of the counter? Whether the customer looks sheepish, matter-of-fact or perfectly indignant, what have they come to expect from their customers, and how can they strike that perfect balance between customer satisfaction and fair business?

H A D A S S A H

S T E I N M A N

LET’S HEAR FROM…

THE LINGERIE SHOP OUR RETURN POLICY USED TO BE… Very lenient. Customers would take home a few items and come back the next day to pay. We wouldn’t even charge the customer’s card or keep track of what was coming or going; the system was built on trust.

THINGS CHANGED BECAUSE… We’d have customers coming back a few months later with merchandise they’d forgotten at home. If we have a customer take home a robe before Sukkos, for instance, and bring it back only after Chanukah, then we’ve lost 30% of the sale. And then there were customers who forgot to pay entirely, or who’d only pay up after the season.

OUR RETURN POLICY TODAY IS… Money back the same day only. Otherwise, customers would take home a bunch of styles to try, and we’d lose out on making sales for all that time that the merchandise wasn’t in the store. If you need to keep our stock for longer, you can bring back returns for up to a week in exchange for store credit. (Before Yom Tov, we sometimes ask for the stock to be back within three days just because there are so many takers for every piece.)

A STORY THAT MADE US CHANGE OUR POLICY WAS… Like most heimish apparel stores, we accept no returns after Yom Tov on any merchandise purchased before Yom Tov. We once had a woman come back to return a robe after Yom Tov, and

106

The Boro Park View

February 7, 2024

www.thebpview.com · 718.408.8770

we gave her store credit and hung it back on the rack. A little later, we noticed that the robe had been hemmed and worn. When we contacted the customer, she told us that she’d asked her rav, and he said it was okay to return the robe. Obviously, we couldn’t sell it. In general, merchandise loses its value over Yom Tov. In a heimish store like this one, a tremendous portion of the season’s stock sells before Sukkos or Pesach, when we keep rushing to restock. Afterward, there isn’t half as much interest. (As an aside, people often ask us why we can’t match the policies of department stores. The main reason is that merchandise sold in department stores has no seasonal cut-off date, which is why they can afford more generous return policies.)

AN EXCEPTION TO THE RULE WOULD BE… Gifts have longer return policies, and we’re also more flexible when it comes to kimpeturins and the elderly.

A NICE ENCOUNTER WITH A CUSTOMER… Happens at least once every day, when a customer calls the store after checking their receipt. Whenever they call and say that “there’s a problem with the bill,” it’s usually because they think they weren’t charged properly. “I was undercharged by five dollars,” they’d say. Sometimes they’re wrong and sometimes they’re right, but the community is unbelievably honest. We can be proud of that.

WHEN WE GET QUALITY CONTROL OMPLAINTS… We look into the matter. If we get multiple complaints about the same item, and we see that there’s really a problem, then we issue a refund to the customer, and that’s that. But sometimes we get complaints that aren’t really fair, like the woman who came in to ask for a refund because her daughter, a newly married young lady, got a stain on a piece of clothing due to its “inferior fabric.” Well, after taking one look at the stain, we knew it was a bleach stain, and after the mother made a fuss, we even had it tested at the lab to prove that it was bleach. The mother didn’t say another word once the results were back, but it’s a pity that we all had to go through that bother to get the story straight. This also comes up in the summer, when mothers bring in their daughters’ robes and show us the holes. Thing is, robes aren’t really meant to be worn when riding a scooter, and you can’t really blame the quality of the robe in such a case.

DURING SALE SEASON… When the price of merchandise is reduced, it’s generally final sale only, though exchanging sizes is usually not a problem.

OUR MESSAGE FOR CUSTOMERS IS… To read the label before washing. Don’t wash colored or black clothing with Tide with bleach, nor with hot water. Also, please respect store hours. Being a saleslady is not an easy job; we’re on our feet all day. Also, since many people shop during their lunch hour, we can’t really take a lunch break. So after an exhausting day, we really want to get home as soon as store hours are over.

TO HEAR WHAT IT’S LIKE FOR A JUDAICA STORE, HERE’S…

JUDAICA CORNER OUR RETURN POLICY IS… Very basic and very well thought out. In short, as long as the merchandise in question looks brand new and can easily be resold, we’ll accept the return, even if some time has passed, and even if there’s no receipt. However, we’ll only accept returns for store credit, since we want the funds to stay in the store.

THIS MAKES SENSE FOR US BECAUSE… Time is money. Our salespeople are always available to help customers with whatever it is they need — finding the right gift, a book for a specific age, or a toy in a certain price range — and when we get a return, we need to ensure that the time we spent with the customer remains time that was well spent. Most people understand this policy, and we can’t really help the 5% who don’t. There’s no way to please everyone. Some people make it clear that they’re upset, but if you start making exceptions, other customers get even more upset.

WHEN IT COMES TO SEASONAL ITEMS… We’d take it back during the season in question, but once the season is over, we may ask you to bring back your return the following year, when we unpack the same merchandise again.

MERCHANDISE PURCHASED ON SALE… Is final sale only.

SINCE GIFTS ACCOUNTS FOR A LOT OF BUSINESS IN A SEFORIM STORE… We easily accept returns for store credit — even if the merchandise wasn’t purchased in our store. For example, if a bar mitzvah bachur got a set of seforim from his uncle in Monsey, and it’s simpler for him to return it locally and buy something else here instead, we’ll gladly take the original gift off his hands if it’s in perfect condition and we stock the same item. (There are stores in Monsey with the same policy.) However, we’ll keep 10%. Our customers love this policy; it makes it so much easier for them to take care of their gift returns. I’ll also take this opportunity to point out that there’s no way we can accept returns that aren’t in their original packaging, because there’s no way we can resell something like that. That’s why we only wrap a gift in paper, and don’t set it up and wrap it in cellophane. Some people buy gifts and pay to have it wrapped professionally, but it’s important to keep in mind that returning a gift that was removed from its box — like a Kosher Lamp, a washing cup and so on — won’t be a simple matter for the recipient.

BUMPS ALONG THE WAY… Would be when we find names in seforim that were returned. This usually happens when the next customer wants to buy it and finds a name inside when he opens up the sefer. Most of the time, we can track down the customer (after all, we have his name!), but we often have to simply swallow the loss.

AN EXPERIENCE THAT MADE US MORE CAREFUL WITH RETURNS… Was the case of a customer who kept coming in with returns, or sending in his wife and daughter to do the returns for him, even though I had no record of him purchasing the items he was returning. It started with returns that looked normal, but then he kept returning the same item over and over again. These returns were obviously coming from our store, but how could he return multiple yarmulkes in size 9 when he never bought any? (In fact, that’s an item that hardly sells to begin with.) Another time, this customer returned over ten pieces of an item when, according to our records, we’d only ever sold six. When there was no way to ignore what was going on any longer, we contacted Shomrim, who warned this man to stay away from our store. These stories are very sad, but they do keep us on our toes. We have eyes all over, and we keep our more expensive prod-

We do our best to help them. This often happens with electronics, like when a device’s sound isn’t clear, it skips tracks, and so on. Some companies prefer that the customer reach out to them directly, but in general, the companies whose products we stock are pretty easy to deal with. Of course, sometimes it’s more about the customer than the product, and we can never be sure that the customer isn’t taking advantage of our easy policy, but we do our best to be fair.

AN INTERESTING ENCOUNTER WITH A CUSTOMER… Happened just last week. We have a customer who always purchases glass challah boards for bar mitzvah gifts. One day last week he came in again for a challah board and we handed him one. He opened the box to inspect the board and immediately said, “Hey, this is the board I just gave a different bar mitzvah boy! See? His name is engraved right here!” The name was hiding inside the frame of the box, and when the bar mitzvah boy received it, he didn’t notice the engraving. Of course, I called up the recipient and told him he needed to come collect his challah board — whose engraving made it even more special than he’d realized!

Not to stress when purchasing bar mitzvah gifts. Some people always stick to the same item, and others try to be unique so the bar mitzvah boy doesn’t end up with doubles of their gift. But the fact is, you can never know what a boy will receive or not, so it isn’t worth it to overthink the decision.

FINALLY, LET’S HEAR FROM…

LILY AND TODD EVEN BEFORE WE DISCUSS OUR POLICIES… We’d like to mention how happy we are to have this opportunity to share some behind-the-scenes information with our customers. The reason for this is twofold: both so our customers learn how far we stretch for them — and how pleased we are to do so — and also so they can be more understanding in the event we can’t make exceptions or change our policies.

OUR RETURN POLICY TODAY IS… Same- or next-day money back, and three days for store credit and exchanges. When we opened the store, nobody had any moneyback policy when it came to fashion clothing; it was a chiddush to give money back at all. The reason? Since fashion has a lifespan of about three weeks, which is when 70% of the merchandise gets sold, if people go home with outfits in two sizes for each child, this could mean an average of six to eight pieces that are out of the store during their peak season. (The loss is far greater, in fact, because besides the fact that merchandise that isn’t in the store can’t be sold, if a mother is looking for a dress in five sizes, and one size is missing, she won’t buy the other four either.) This means a substantial loss for the business and was the reason fashion stores didn’t offer money back. However, from the beginning, we wanted to please our customers and take care of their needs, which is why we decided to offer next-day money

114

The Boro Park View

back. People often don’t understand that when we offer money back, we’re risking not making a sale at all (even for store credit) while allowing our hottest merchandise to be out of the store during peak season.

DURING SALE SEASON… When the price of merchandise is reduced, it’s generally final sale only. But if it’s a matter of exchanging one size for another of the same item, then we’re usually okay with that.

THIS MAKES SENSE FOR US BECAUSE… To have a store running, we pay employees to help customers on the floor, and we pay staff to handle the stocking room. The workers in the stocking room make sure that there are one or two pieces per size per style out in the store, and this involves a lot of physical labor. When customers make returns, this process is repeated in the reverse, and during busy seasons, we hire double the usual number of workers to handle this job. During sale time, when we hardly turn a profit to begin with, there’s no way we can afford the additional stocking staff. We’re really here to please you, which is why we’ll deal with the restocking if you need to exchange sizes, but we can’t provide the service of having you take home four items and bring back two (or all four!).

when it’s cheaper to buy?

Was the time a customer came from Baltimore last summer and bought a complete wardrobe for four girls. After paying, she took a local taxi to wherever she was going, and unfortunately, she left the bags in the trunk of the car. When she tried to call the taxi company to get their help tracking the car, they weren’t helpful in the least. With no other recourse, she returned to our store and purchased the entire order again. The total was some $2,000. The next day, a heimishe woman used the same taxi service, and when she opened the trunk to put her stroller inside, she found a couple of stuffed Lily and Todd bags filled with brand-new clothes. The driver of the car had no idea what the bags were all about, but the woman soon found the receipt in one of the bags and contacted the customer. Baruch Hashem, the customer got her purchases back, and everyone, including us, was thrilled with that return!

A STORY I’LL NEVER FORGET…

MY FAVORITE RETURN TO DATE…

Exclusive selection

116

We offer 30 days for returns and exchanges. Best of all, your store credit never expires. This means that if you got way more layette gifts than you could possibly use the first year, we’ll be more than glad if you use your gift money to dress your child when he or she is a toddler as well. They’re your funds to use as you see fit!

Happened when we were reviewing accounts. We noticed that one customer spent $3,000 in transactions over a period of three seasons, but each time she made purchases, she returned everything. The only sale that stuck was $17 for a shell. We had the guts to call her and ask for an explanation. She admitted that she took a bunch of things home to try, and when she had the styles and sizes figured out, she returned everything and scoured the internet to see if she could source the same merchandise from somewhere else for a few dollars cheaper. Shopping for clothes online usually means a huge hassle when it comes to exchanging sizes, so she found a way to avoid that and still pocket the difference. This customer managed to stay within rules. She never missed the return window. She always came back on time. But she didn’t possess the mentchlichkeit to understand that she was using the services of a business — which actually pays workers to provide that service! — all without allowing the store to benefit from the sales.

WHEN IT COMES TO BABY GIFTS…

A MESSAGE FOR CUSTOMERS WOULD BE… To avoid arriving at our store a minute or two before closing. Our salespeople really want to get home, and it isn’t fair to keep them even a moment longer than they have to. Sometimes customers say, “But I’m only making a return!” If you stop to think about it, what this basically means is asking that we stay longer — without even making a sale. Please don’t put us in this position. We appreciate your understanding!

If you’re met by brown cardboard boxes every time you open your front door, you’re in good company. Gone are the days when we eagerly anticipated (for seven to ten days!) the arrival of a Lands’ End, Pottery Barn or Brooks Brothers order. The convenience of hassle-free returns has ushered us into a new shopping paradigm — the “buy now, decide later” mentality. And in a world where returning items has become a simple process, the need to deliberate before purchasing has diminished. After all, why secondguess when you can effortlessly return what doesn’t quite suit your needs? While consumers enthusiastically click add

to cart and check out with their credit card info already saved to the system, the question arises: What percentage of these purchases become permanent possessions? Astonishingly, a substantial 30% of all online acquisitions are returned. In 2023 alone, over $200 billion worth of online purchases in the United States were returned. How does that compare to returns that physical stores face? Those are significantly lower — between 10 and 20%. That should come as no surprise, given that almost half of U.S. retailers offer a complimentary returns shipping policy. As undeniably convenient as this approach is for consumers, it’s tough on the retailers.

The Boro Park View asked 200 frum women what prompts them to return products. We gave them five options.

REASONS FOR REVERSALS The growing trend of “bracket buying,” where individuals purchase multiple sizes with the intention of returning those that don’t fit, poses a significant challenge for retailers. “This is the greatest perk of online shopping for me,” admits Sara G., a Brooklyn mother of seven. “As soon as I’m notified of new arrivals, I order one of each size, keep what works, and return what doesn’t.” Much more convenient than dealing with the hassle of taking the kids to the store and coordinating everyone’s schedules! This practice particularly impacts the fashion industry, given that determining the right fit is not an exact science. According to Bruce Winder, an independent retail expert based in Toronto, “You’re not buying a ballpoint pen, so you need to try it on, and you need to touch and feel the garment and see if it looks good on you.”

27 9

My indecision makes it difficult for me to determine whether or not I want the item in question

101 The product looks different from the advertising image

19 44

I ordered one of each size and will return the ones that don’t fit/look good

Of course, some women said they ended up keeping stuff because they didn’t feel like going through the hassle of returning it, or they waited so long that they missed the returns window. (You can stop nodding your head.) Now I know why so many items are sold out on the day new arrivals are announced!

FEES, FASHION AND THE FUTURE OF RETURNS It comes as no surprise that many big names out there have raised their minimum for free shipping and have instituted charges for returns. Retailers believe that charging for returns is the way to curb negative consumer behavior. In today’s world of high inflation and post-pandemic markups, these costs may seem like a straightforward way to discourage customers from returning orders. Notably, major players such as H&M and Zara are now charging return fees, 124

and customers accept them as a reality of modern shopping. Will other retailers follow suit? Retail experts think returns fees are a balancing act between retailers’ thirst for profits and the skyhigh returns problem plaguing the e-commerce industry. After all, retailers must balance their books.

RETAIL RIDDLES — CRACKED! However, while retailers aim to recover some of their losses, they are also strategically working toward reshaping consumer habits and potentially increasing revenue. In addition to the immediate financial impact of charging a return fee, if returns fees prompt consumers to think twice — such as carefully checking their measurements instead of bracket buying — companies may ultimately reduce their overall return costs by managing a lower volume of goods being returned to warehouses. This is the primary reason more retailers are introducing these fees. Not all business are managing to recoup their losses entirely, but they’re definitely managing to offset some of it.

Out of interest, I asked the same women how the newly instated shipping and return fees have affected or will affect their shopping. In response,

There are some retailers who allow customers to return items for free if they bring them back to a brick-and-mortar location. While allowing customers to dodge shipping costs, it also puts them in the clutches of the physical store — and I don’t need to tell you that when a customer is already in the store, they’re very likely to buy, spending their refund and then some. Regardless of the number of businesses implementing these fees and the reasons behind their decision, the current retail model is unsustainable.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW

45% said they’d check the size charts. “If I’ll need to pay for returns, let me guess my size more accurately,” Bruchy D. said.

126

35% said they’d order extra, or all sizes, even though there’s a return fee. “Time is money,” Gitty R., a busy working mom, said.

The Boro Park View

20% said they would share the order with a sister/ friend so they can split the shipping and return costs. (Again, there were those who noted that they would stop shopping at the store entirely, but that wasn’t one of the choices.)

Amazon stands out with one of the most consumer-friendly return policies in the market. Avoiding “return anxiety” has emerged as a crucial factor in consumers’ buying choices, particularly since the early 2000s when Zappos and Amazon started their free return policies. With the surge in e-commerce and the expedited delivery of products, return rates have risen significantly, and retailers seem to have limited options to address this trend. “Amazon initially implemented this strategy to delight its customers,” says the CEO of a popular retail store who asked to remain anonymous, “and now, how are we, a clothing store, supposed to keep up with Amazon’s expansive growth? Some days, we feel like we get more returns than the boxes we actually shipped.” Where do your returns end up? While retailers and Amazon sellers could reintroduce them to virtual shelves, from a financial and time-saving standpoint, the costs associated with inspecting, repacking, and relisting merchandise make this option unappealing. Instead, companies find it more advantageous to… liquidate.

LIQUIDATION LABYRINTH The land where returned treasures find new homes, small businesses thrive, and pallets hold the promise of discounted marvels, is known as a liquidation sale. Warehouse liquidation, a strategic practice aimed at creating space for new inventory, revolves around the clearance of overstock and customer returns. If you visit Liquidity Services, the 130,000-square-foot warehouse in Garland, Texas, the aisles aren’t lined with typical merchandise. Instead, they’re stacked with returns from Am-

The pallets, a mishmash of readyto-resell gems and potential repair projects are offered at a substantial discount. This implies that the potential for making a profit (or getting closer to the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price, MSRP) lies in the resale of these items. “I feel like I hit the jackpot,” said Shia R., the owner of a local electronics store who bought a pallet of electronics at a liquidation sale. “I got a pallet filled with high-value electronics from renowned brands, all in perfect condition. Some may have packaging defects, but I can easily repackage them in small ziplocks and offer them at a discounted price.”

azon, Target, Home Depot and more, all in the process of being liquidated. Liquidation companies or single liquidators eagerly undertake the task of relieving warehouses of these surplus items. They come in and buy a bunch of products in bulk. After that, they package and put them on pallets before selling them again at liquidation sales or on sites like eBay or Poshmark. What’s on the liquidation sale menu? Anything and everything! Leggings, shampoo, cordless phones, and even a truckload of computer screens for $2,000. The liquidation pallets, accessible and affordable, are treasure troves for small businesses seeking gems at a steal.

However, there is a level of transparency lacking in these transactions. That’s why, over time, some liquidators have turned to online B2B marketplaces. These platforms offer buyers direct access to high-quality, brand-name goods at a significantly reduced cost. Given the wide range of product conditions, shipment size options, and budgets, there is liquidation inventory available for just about everybody. Unsurprisingly, the liquidation market keeps growing, doubling since 2008. So yes, as consumers, each decision we make plays a role in shaping the future of retail. Before you click “return,” will you reflect on the journey those items might undertake and the impact it could have?

All Shabbos the box remains in my line of vision, and every time I go in or out, I feel a pang when I think about the sodaless Horowitzes. But I really tried my best. There wasn’t much more I could have done, right? I can blame it on the fact that my husband is out of town, or on my general absentmindedness, but as the days go by, the only times I remember the soda sitting right by the door is when I rush in or out. And so the box remains. Who drinks Coca Cola during the week, anyhow? But there’s a nagging in my brain, and it sometimes gets expressed until the kids know it too. We need to take care

he week goes by. The welcome signs go up, because Tatty is coming home. He’s exhausted from the trip and doesn’t have headspace to listen to all that he missed, primarily the soda victory story the kids are so proud of. They disappointedly head to bed with all the unshared excitement wreaking havoc on their circadian rhythm. The next morning — it’s Erev Shabbos again — I find my husband with his head buried in a mound of winter gear on the coat closet floor. “What are you looking for?” I ask. “Where did the case of soda go? I put it right here behind the door.” “Oh! Were you the one who brought it in? We took care of it. The kids flagged down the grocery truck. They were actually dying to share the story with you yesterday.” “But why?” “Because it was delivered here by mistake and we —” “Oh, but I was the one who put it here. I took it out of the car before I left because I needed the trunk space. But I need to return the car now.” “Return the car? What car?” “The one I borrowed so I wouldn’t have to schlep the minivan all the way to Baltimore. Didn’t I tell you I borrowed a car from Sruli Horowitz?”

him regretfully. There’s something so exciting about boxes full of foodstuff arriving at the house. “No, no! The soda! We can give it to the delivery man to take to Horowitz!” And before I can follow his line of reasoning, he has roped in his younger brother, and they’re sharing the weight of the case of soda between their two undersized but very enthusiastic selves as they rush to the truck, quickly, before it leaves the street. The delivery guys eye them with a strange expression. Because why are these boys bringing a case of soda to the truck? This usually works the other way around. But nothing can slow the momentum now that Project Return the Soda is in full swing. I gesticulate to the driver to stop the truck. Undeterred by the language barrier, we point to the label and try to impress on him in some universal way the importance of having this box arrive at the doorstep of the family who ordered it. Neighbors have gathered round to check out the action by now, and the delivery guys are getting impatient. They still look puzzled as they shrug and let the two overeager boys heft the box into their truck. As they drive off, we breathe a sigh of relief. We can finally put the saga of the mistakenly delivered soda behind us! The kids are pumped, telling and retelling the tale of that victorious moment when they caught the truck and finally returned the box. And now the rightful owners will finally get their soda! I am still ruefully thinking of the sodaless simcha, but I am more than glad it was finally off my scattered brain.

How long does it take until you actually ship your returns back to where they came from? Is it a matter of hours, days or weeks, and what does that depend on?

Do you own something that you meant to return, but kept because the return window came and went by mistake?

Shaindy Elbaum answers first. She’s a self-proclaimed goody-two-shoes when it comes to returns.

Where do you keep your waiting returns?

Returns sit in a laundry basket in my closet. How long does it take for you to actually ship your returns back to where they came from?

They typically go back within a day or two. Do you drop off your returns, or pay a delivery company to pick them up?

I drop them off myself. And no, they never sit in the car until they get to their intended destination. Do you own something that you meant to return?

I don’t own anything because I missed the return window.

Baila Z. doesn’t do as good a job as Shaindy, but at least she has a system!

Where do you keep your waiting returns?

I have a walk-in Pesach kitchen off my kitchen. The door is usually closed, which makes it the perfect hiding place for my returns. Do you drop off your returns, or pay a delivery company to pick them up?

Every Friday my husband brings home the return labels from his office. I immediately seal and label the boxes, which I

retrieve from the Pesach kitchen. Then, sometime in the afternoon, my husband takes some of the younger kids for a ride to the UPS office. So l’kavod Shabbos, my “returns room” gets cleared. How long does it take for you to actually ship your returns back to where they came from?

On very short Fridays, my husband sometimes doesn’t have time to do the UPS drop-offs. So then the labeled boxes bounce around in the back of his SUV un-

til the following week, when the next batch of boxes join the first batch in the trunk. Do you own something that you meant to return?

Many pairs of gloves! I hadn’t realized when I bought them that since they were marked down, they weren’t eligible for returns. They sat in my Pesach kitchen for a long time while I was debating whether it’s worthwhile to call customer service and beg for an exception. But then the snow came, and my family used each and every pair! I wish I’d had more!

Goldy Loeb, finally, sounds more like the rest of us.

Aidel Koenig is another person whose return habits don’t make us feel two inches tall.

Where do you keep your waiting returns? Where do you keep your waiting returns?

Neatly stacked in a corner of the master bedroom. When they’re all neat like that, it totally looks like they belong there

Our returns are comfortably accommodated in our guest room. So if you’re ever told that our guest room is taken, try offering to package and ship our returns.

How long does it take for you to actually ship your returns back to where they came from?

How long does it take for you to actually ship your returns back to where they came from?

Officially I drop them off, but really they just sit neatly in the corner of my room.

I generally don’t shop at stores that have tight or difficult return policies, but in the rare event that I do, those packages are prioritized and shipped back pronto. Some others, such as Amazon returns, may wait much longer as my overthinking skills are put to good use. Do you drop off your returns, or pay a delivery company to pick them up?

I tend to pinch pennies, so I do the drop-offs. However, my return shipping service occasionally experiences extended delays that sometimes cost me the value of the item itself. So paying for pickup service is probably more economical. Do you own something that you meant to return?

Our guest room is well stocked with clothes of various sizes, tags intact, that missed their return window. Unfortunately, by the time we tend to notice the unreturned articles of clothing, the sizes no longer fit.

A very long time. I love Zappos because they have a 365day return policy. Do you drop off your returns, or pay a delivery company to pick them up?

Do you own something that you meant to return?

Oy, many things, each one more ridiculous than the next. Twenty-five feet of colored LED strip lights, an enormous wooden chess set (I didn’t realize how big and heavy it would be), a white baseball cap, and other things hidden in boxes that I try not to think about.

C. Schon gets points for effort!

Where do you keep your waiting returns?

In the overstuffed coat closet How long does it take for you to actually ship your returns back to where they came from?

I’m clutter-averse. And I take care of it within five minutes. Seriously. But then... I spend days looking for the UPS guy delivering my next box (to be returned), after which I miss him, and then I get one of my kids to schlep to a drop off box. Do you drop off your returns, or pay a delivery company to pick them up?

See above. Do you own something that you meant to return?

Yup. I do. I own quite a bit of clothing that was meant to be returned. I used one plaid skirt for a costume, so that got some use, at least.

Chana Gluck has snagged some worthwhile tips.

Where do you keep your waiting returns?

One of the perks of being a writer and interviewing experts is collecting tricks of many trades! According to Dee Interiors, designating a bin for returns is step one in staying on top of them. I put my returns bin in my hallway closet and since having taken to

that instead of stashing returns in various drawers, my turnaround time has sped up dramatically. How long does it take for you to actually ship your returns back to where they came from?

Days or weeks, depending on if there’s a Shabbos — or better yet, Yom Tov— in between, and how packed my to-do list is.

Chaya Gordon is nothing if not honest… but she seems to have good taste!

Where do you keep your waiting returns?

They land in random places around the house, usually in corners. The corner between my bookshelf and the wall. Between the couch and the wall. And my bedroom closet under the hanging clothes. How long does it take for you to actually ship your returns back to where they came from?

Returns and exchanges are a sore topic for me. This is also true about stuff I buy locally. I often just make do with something less than perfect because I don’t get back to the store to exchange or return something. On the rare occasion when I’m on top of the return, it will be done in a matter of days, but most of the time, the item in question is still cluttering my house way after the return window has closed. Do you drop off your returns, or pay a delivery company to pick them up?

Because of my tendency to procrastinate returns, I will schedule pick-ups when I can, even at the cost of a few dollars. When that’s not an option, well... I have a bag that I ordered as a gift that didn’t quite look the way I expected it to. It’s sitting in the car, and the return window closes in two weeks. Am I up for the challenge? Do you own something that you meant to return?

Oh, lots of things! We have a fuzzy teal blanket that arrived instead of another item, and my five-year-old has claimed it as his own. I have a pair of green shoes that never fit right sitting in my closet. I have green velvet chair covers that arrived a few days too late to adorn our sukkah, sitting in a box awaiting a tafkid. I have a pile of green shirts (are you sensing a theme?) that didn’t fit, and are waiting to be donated. And all this is just a sampling.

P

arshas Mishpatim is the blueprint of so many of our daily halachos. Especially dinei mazik v’nizak –compensating a party for damage caused. What is considered damage? Is damage cause by Ayin Hara considered damaging property?

Ayin Hara is a firmly established concept in the Torah. Not only in the Zohar or kabbalistic texts..

Rav Shalom Schwadron a”h, the famous Maggid of Yerushalayim, recounted the following story.

Further along, we know Yaakov Avinu warned his sons to use separate entrances upon arrival in Mitzrayim to avoid Ayin Hara.

Hagaon Rav Isser Zalmen Meltzer, zy”a, would walk home each afternoon with his talmid, R’ Dovid Finkel. They would pass shuk Machne Yehuda to reach Rav Meltzer’s home within moments.

One day, Rav Isser Zalmen changed to a long-winded detour giving no reason for this change. One particularly hot afternoon, under the unrelenting Mid-Eastern son, R’ Dovid once again asked Rav Isser Zalmen to take their old route.

When he adamantly refused, R’ Dovid pressed him for a reason. Rav Isser Zalmen responded that there’s a gemara in Bava Basra which prohibits a man from walking past his friend’s wheat field while the stalks are tall and juicy, lest his ayin hara damage the property.

Now, during the summer months, with the watermelons a luscious red and displayed in all their juicy glory, Rav Isser Zalmen didn’t want to cause an ayin hara by looking at these melons! Rav Isser Zalmen was famous for his Ayin Tova. His tzeddaka and chesed for all were legendary. And he was worried over an ayin hara on melons?

When did the concept of Ayin Hara start?

In Parshas Vayeiru, Sarah was accused of having an ayin hara on Hagar, thus causing her to miscarry. Later on, Rashi says that Sarah cast an ayin hara on Yshmael causing him to lose his ability to walk.

Ayin Hara and the practical halachos of tashlimim

Ayin Hara has two guilty parties. The one who attracts the evil eye and the one casting the evil eye. Our

sefarim

have cautioned against calling undue attention to our successes. It is brought down that one should not mention a lottery win. Furthermore, there’s a halacha against calling a father and son to the Torah consecutively, to avoid an ayin hara. But more importantly, one has a tremendous responsibility not to cause an ayin hara to another yid. Even just marveling at successes without evil intent can cause an ayin hara.

- The Sefer Chassidim firmly labels a person who causes an ayin hara a gozel, a thief. Practically, in halacha, a thief has to repay the damage caused by his actions.

- The lashon from the Levush in Choshen Mishpat on the Bava Basra gemara is very

harsh. One who does go to his friend’s wheat field in its prime is considered like shooting with an arrow and physically damaging the field. The Aruch Hashilchan (ch’’m 378,1) rules that ‫ בדיני שמים‬you are liable!

So while there’s a strong case for a person being liable for damage caused by his ayin hara, the pesak is that he doesn’t have to repay. Why? The Kehillas Yaakov explains that there’s no way for beis din to execute the halacha because it’s impossible to prove whose ayin hara caused the damage. Furthermore, R’ Moshe Feinstein zt”l rules that while causing ayin hara is assur, since it’s done with the eyes and not with the hands one doesn’t have to repay. In addition, the gemara with the wheat field uses a lashon of assur, not chayav, therefore one doesn’t have to repay the physical damage.

However, all agree that while Beis Din cannot prosecute you for the physical damage you caused, one has to be extremely careful about causing an ayin hara. on the contrary, as we see the tangible power the eyes have, we should strive to have an ayin tova on each other and bring all good, brachos, yeshuos, and refuos to us and all of Klal Yisroel!

Einy Yeshua received the blessing of many gedolim, such as: the Skulener Rebbe zt”l, Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky zt”l Hgh”tz R’ Yakov Meir Shechter shlita, Harav HaMekubal Batzry shlita, and many more. Following time-honored traditions, Einy Yeshuah has helped many people overcome the effects of Ayin Hara. For more information please call: 718.705.5182

Gitty Roth doesn’t mind the hassle of returns — but she does have the perk of daily pick-ups.

Rochel Bauer seems to have the process down pat — and when all else fails, there’s always the donation pile.

Where do you keep your waiting returns?

I have a large walk-in closet right next to my front door. Besides serving as a mud room, it serves as a waiting room for returns, too. But I don’t mind because I love the convenience of being able to decide which purchases I want to keep and which I want to return from the comfort and quiet of my own home. How long does it take for you to actually ship your returns back to where they came from?

I really try to pack up returns quickly, and then I leave them in the front passenger seat of the car so I see them and get them done.

Most of my returns don’t wait around for too long because there are daily package pick-ups from my husband’s office. But when it comes to busy clothing seasons, it’s a whole ‘nother story. When the boxes no longer fit in the mudroom, I use one corner of my living room to organize everything.

How long does it take for you to actually ship your returns back to where they came from?

Do you drop off your returns, or pay a delivery company to pick them up?

Do you drop off your returns, or pay a delivery company to pick them up?

Once the boxes are labeled and taped well, they’re off to the office with my husband where they get picked up.

Where do you keep your waiting returns?

Either it gets returned the day I get the order, or it waits months.

I drop them off.

Do you own something that you meant to return?

Do you own something that you meant to return?

Since our return system is pretty streamlined, I don’t really end up keeping unwanted items by mistake.

Yes, a piece of clothing for myself. After a few months, it moved to my donation pile.

Our jersey A-2 A-2 cows are different than most dairy cows. They are smaller, give less milk and more cream. Our Certified 100% grass fed cows graze on pasture all year round. In addition, the milk has a ‘golden’ cream color reflecting the nutrients in the grass, and the jersey’s innate ability to produce this beautiful milk. At Meant to be, emphasis is on ‘cream’. We celebrate its taste, color, and full cream smoothness. Meant to be started producing yogurt using artisanal integrity and ‘authenticity of the milk’ as our ‘standard’. Our yogurt process follows a time honored ‘batch cultured’ tradition and ‘slow strained’ thickening without adding powdered milk or stabilizers. Our yogurt is not homogenized (Our cream separates in a natural way) thus retaining the original cream structure. We don’t make low – fat yogurt. Meant to be Yogurt is made with 100% organic real fruit, it has no flavors or food coloring. All made under the new square kosher supervision. Now we’ll enjoy wholesome yogurt with its powerful probiotics, along with its great health benefits. Our principle is to hold the authenticity of milk as an unaltered source of food and nutrition. We don’t wish to alter or degrade the milk if at all possible. Our process and statement shall shy from hype, additives, or twisting of ‘words’. We start with good grass and good care for our cows, and finish with the best creamy yogurt and milk products around.

“Your bill is $1,985.” My son’s tutor tossed this out casually as I arrived to pick him up. Then she launched into a long report on his progress, but I was no longer listening. Nineteen eighty-five! I kept repeating to myself as we drove home. It was like a punch in the gut. I didn’t have money to pay for basics; where was I going to get $1,985 to pay the tutor? And next week it would be… I did the math… $2,060. And the week after that $2,135… Help. I looked at Chaim in the rearview mirror. I knew he’d be thrilled to stop going to his tutor, but ending tutoring wouldn’t solve his reading difficulties. And ending tutoring wouldn’t solve our money problems, either. My thoughts churned the whole drive home. It wasn’t as if I was completely in the dark about our money situation, but I wasn’t completely in the know either. I knew we didn’t have “extra.” I tried to “be careful,” to only buy what we “needed” (or what I thought we needed). My husband worked, paid the bills, and spent as little money as

possible; I did the rest. I shopped for the house, bought the kids what they needed, bought myself what I needed. Just kept coasting along… until I crashed into the number nineteen eighty-five. There were red flags before this. Embarrassing moments in the grocery store when my credit card was declined. Pushing off the cleaning lady for a few days until my husband could get cash. And I knew, vaguely, that we had some debt from buying the house a couple of years ago — but who doesn’t? I’d always considered us careful with money. We’ve never been rich; my husband was in kollel for the first ten years of our marriage, and I worked to support our growing family. I was used to living on a normal, even low, standard, and baruch Hashem, over the years we’d even managed to put away money for a down payment. Our money problem had crept up on us quickly and silently — a failed business venture, costs associated with buying a house, our kids’ needs exploding as they became teenagers. Suddenly, we found ourselves avoiding the topic of money. Suddenly, we found ourselves hoping for the best. Suddenly, we found ourselves thinking, every month, that maybe next month will be better. With no savings to fall back on, whatever money came in was spent right away. We used credit cards, and then

borrowed some money. But we never faced the problem, and we never made changes. Even though I was feeling the pinch and could tell my husband was worried, we still continued living and spending as always. Nineteen eighty-five! It was a lot of money. But that wasn’t the point. She could have said $500 — I couldn’t pay that either. In fact, it could have been $10,000; it was just as out of reach. This just wasn’t working anymore. I walked around for the next few days in a fog. I couldn’t ask my husband for the money; I knew he wouldn’t have it. I canceled the cleaning lady. I didn’t join my friends when they met for coffee. I was numb. The number $1,985 was branded in front of my eyes. It followed me everywhere I went, and I couldn’t get it out of my head. And other numbers kept popping up too. The $25 I’d borrowed from my daughI knew, ter to pay the cleaning vaguely, that lady. The $18 I owed my friend Shevy for the we had some ticket to the Nshei Chinese Auction. The $450 debt — but my brother-in-law had lent us when we needed who doesn’t? to fix our car. We’d borrowed $700 from my single sister for (this one really made me cringe) a trip to Florida, and $40 from my downstairs neighbor to pay for the pharmacy delivery… I knew something needed to change. This wasn’t the kind of problem that would just iron itself out (though I deeply wished it would). This was a desperate call to action. So I pushed past the numbness and forced myself out of the fog, and sat down with a pen and paper. But I had no idea where to start. I had never made a budget before. I had never really thought about money. I tried to get started: I folded my paper into three columns and labeled them income, expenses and loans. I put the $1,985 right there at the top — no more hiding. I didn’t have all the information I needed to fill in all three columns, but whatever I did have looked pretty bad. Still, writing it out made me feel better. A sense of empowerment came over me: We were going to do this! I felt a surge of adrenalin and a sense of purpose. The next morning, when the last kid was finally out of the house, I took a deep breath, faced my husband, dug deep inside for the courage I would need and said, “We need to talk.” TO BE CONTINUED…

WHAT AN IDEA Annoyed by the solitary bump in the wallpaper? How about wallpaper full of bumps? In 1957, Al Fielding and Marc Chavannes, two Swiss inventors, introduced wallpaper with a raised texture. They stuck two shower curtains together, creating a seal so tight that air bubbles formed. However, this concept never took off; few consumers wanted to cocoon themselves in padded rooms.

GO GREEN After the setback in the wallpaper venture, Fielding and Chavannes redirected their glued-curtain concept toward insulation for greenhouses. Although effective, convincing buyers to enclose spaces in plastic remained challenging. For a while, Bubble Wrap was a clever idea without a clear purpose.

POPULAR A total of 52 countries produce Bubble Wrap. Enough is produced annually to wrap around the equator ten times — or make it to the moon and back.

TRY AND FAIL… In 1959, Fielding and Chavannes founded the company Sealed Air to market Bubble Wrap. Their marketing expert, Frederick W. Bowers, discovered that IBM was about to ship its delicate and costly 1401 decimal computer. Bowers proposed wrapping the computers in Sealed Air’s product, replacing traditional materials like newspaper. IBM, impressed by the innovation, adopted Bubble Wrap to safeguard delicate electronics during transit. By the mid-1960s, Bubble Wrap had become a staple in the shipping industry.

BUBBLE BRAND Pass me a Kleenex, please. Want more Coke? Like these brand names that became integrated in everyday language, Bubble Wrap is a trademarked product owned by Sealed Air. The term cannot be used by any competing air-cushioning company.

Roizy Baum

ALL FALL DOWN Don’t try this at home, but Bubble Wrap can cushion a fall. In 2011, WIRED contributor Rhett Allain performed calculations and estimated that one would potentially need 39 layers of Bubble Wrap to survive a fall from a sixth-story window.

POP, POP, POP In 2015, thousands of Boy Scouts came together in Elbert, Colorado, and made history by setting a Guinness World Record for the most people popping Bubble Wrap simultaneously, with a whopping 2,681 participants.

CUSTOM WRAPS Bubble Wrap to match your gift theme? Sealed Air also manufactures sheets with smiley faces, as well as letter-shaped and heart-shaped air cushions. There are even sheets that spell out messages!

THE ULTIMATE STRESS-BUSTER Believe it or not, that satisfying pop isn’t just in your head. According to the 2012 Bubble Wrap Brand “Pop” Poll, one minute of bubble-popping is like treating yourself to the stress relief of a 33-minute massage. So go ahead and pop your worries away!

BUBBLE WRAP THE BUBBLE WRAP In 2015, a peculiar image of a roll of Bubble Wrap order enveloped in shipping paper circulated widely on the internet, leaving many questioning why Amazon would safeguard protective packaging material. One potential explanation is that since the roll didn’t fill the entire box, shippers reinforced the vacant space with extra packing material to prevent the cardboard from collapsing and causing the stacked boxes above it to fall.

COOL COUNTDOWN Infuse some excitement into your daily countdowns with the Sealed Air day calendar. This unique calendar lets you mark each day by popping a humongous bubble.

PURIM SHTICK OF THE CENTURY In December 2015, security officials responded to reports of gunshots at the Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Highpowered weapons were quickly mobilized. But — false alarm! Turns out, the perceived threat was actually someone popping Bubble Wrap on the base. February 7, 2024

PESACH, VALIORCA, 1882 REMEMBER WHAT ZUSHA WOULD ALWAYS SAY? IT’S VERY EASY TO COMPLAIN AND GIVE UP. IT’S HARDER TO BE OPTIMISTIC AND TRY TO FIND A SOLUTION.

BURN THE JEWS! BURN THEIR HOUSES!

ZUSHA, WE’RE DOOMED! THE RIOTERS SET FIRE TO THE FRONT DOOR! THERE’S NO WAY FOR US TO ESCAPE... IT’S THE END...

MISHA, IT’S EASY TO GIVE UP AND SINK INTO DESPAIR, BUT WE MUST ALWAYS HAVE FAITH AND TRY TO FIND A SOLUTION.

ZUSHA...

ZUSHA! WHERE’S ZUSHA? HE DIDN’T GET OUT!

I MANAGED TO BREAK THE WINDOW. QUICK! JUMP OUT!

ZUSHA!!!

I WISH ZUSHA WERE HERE WITH US. HE ALWAYS KNEW HOW TO ENCOURAGE ME AND HELP ME SEE THE GOOD IN EVERY SITUATION.

BUT I DON’T SEE HOW ZUSHA WOULD FIND SOMETHING GOOD ABOUT THIS PLACE!

RECAP: WHILE THE RUBINOVS ARE INSPECTING THEIR CRUMBLING HOUSE, ASAI AND PEDRO MORENO MAKE IT CLEAR THAT THEY DON’T WANT JEWS IN MONIGOTE. THEY BLAME THE RUBINOVS FOR TAKING AWAY PEDRO’S HOUSE.

ARE YOU PERHAPS RELATED TO ASAI AND PEDRO MORENO?

BY THE WAY, SUCH A WOUND CAN EASILY BECOME INFECTED, NOT TO MENTION THE RISK OF BLOOD LOSS.

WHO ARE YOU? MY HOUSE IS CLOSE BY. I’LL DRESS YOUR WOUND, AND THEN YOU CAN GO HOME. MY NAME IS JOSE MORENO. I’M YOUR NEIGHBOR.

HE DIDN’T INVEST IN CULTIVATING THE LAND OR IN RAISING HIS FLOCKS. HE SPENT ALL OF HIS MONEY ON DRINKING AND GAMBLING AND DIDN’T PAY HIS TAXES.

THE ARGENTINE GOVERNMENT THEREFORE CONFISCATED SEÑOR MORENO’S FARM AND SOLD IT TO YOU, SEÑOR RUBINOV, WITH THE CONDITION THAT YOU WILL INCREASE THE FARM’S INCOME AND TAX PAYMENT.
