But Power Tools is already at week forty-something, and I know what that means. And I see the signs. Riva quit her job, finally. And her daughter is finding her footing. Lani’s house is almost done. Help! You know what that means? This serial is also almost done! What am I going to do? Lani and Riva have been my best friends for close to a year. What will I do without them? I don’t want the story to end! T.L. W E A T H E R

THE HOUSING CRISIS
(Re: Power Tools, Issue 221) As Power Tools comes to an end, I’m happy for Lani that she’s getting out of her cramped basement and moving into a house that is comfortable for her family. I can relate to the problem, although I’m still waiting for the solution. The housing crisis in Boro Park is terrible. We need all of Klal Yisrael to put their heads together to come up with solutions. There are no apartments or furnished apartments to be found for chasanim and kallahs. They often have no choice but to move into hotels or tiny, temporary hachnasas orchim apartments. Soon there will be a shortage of those, too… Baruch Hashem, I have a large family, and we live in a two-bedroom apartment. We have been looking to move for years, but there is nothing available. I have a cousin with eight kids who lives in a one-bedroom apartment! When you do find an apartment, the price is crazy high, and often the landlord doesn’t want to rent it out to a family with kids. And for every apartment that becomes available, there are hundreds of families that want it. I feel like the landlords are taking advantage of the situation and charging outrageous prices for rent — and then you still have to pay the equivalent of one month’s rent to the broker! Rental fees and broker fees should be regulated. Rabbanim, askanim and laymen should work together to find solutions. Otherwise, this problem will spawn worse problems. A Local Resident

(Re: The Question of Therapy, Issue 220) Thank you so much for your article on therapy for kids. It was such a clear presentation about something that so many people are confused about. I was particularly gratified to read Dr. Posy’s description regarding the role of parents. All the terrible stories that circulate really discourage people from seeking therapy for their children. How wonderful to hear that there are ehrlich practitioners who value parents as partners who want to help their children. Thank you to The Boro Park View for introducing us to these professionals and their valuable insights. I learned a lot from this article. A Reader

(Re: Mindful Healing, Issue 220) I truly enjoyed the detailed article on various types of therapy modalities. It was educational, interesting and informative. The only thing it was missing was a directory of therapists and practitioners who offer the therapies described in the article. I am particularly interested in biofeedback, sand therapy and music therapy. If any readers have leads for providers, I can be contacted through The Boro Park View. Thank you! P.R.
YOUR SAY KEEP YOUR BABY SAFE
I would like to make mothers aware of a dangerous habit I often see: women pushing their strollers ahead of them into the street as they wait for the chance to cross. Perhaps because they don’t drive, or perhaps because they’re standing a foot or two farther back from the road behind the stroller, these mothers don’t realize how dangerous it is to have the stroller protruding so far into the roadway. As a driver, I can see clearly how dangerous this is, and there are many close calls, unfortunately. I realize that women who don’t drive might not realize this; you think you’re just inching out to see if it’s safe to cross. But your baby is in danger. Please stay on the sidewalk! A Local Driver

tive? If the presenting problem disappears and the therapist and child are all in agreement that therapy is no longer needed, then great. But usually it’s more complex than that. Therapy hopefully uncovers the underlying reasons for the presenting problem, which takes time to untangle and may spawn new concerns until everything is sorted out. If the child needs confidentiality, how can the parent assess if therapy is “working”? Even more, how can the parent assess if the therapist is competent? Thank you for addressing these topics. If you could address these questions in a future issue, I’m sure it would help many people. T.P.

LASER DANGER
I want to make the community aware about the danger of “laser pointers” — even small ones that are given to kids as toys. I took my son for a routine eye and vision checkup, and the doctor was surprised to see a macular hole in one eye. This kind of hole affects the person’s vision and cannot be resolved with glasses; surgery is usually needed. Dr. Ferrone, a specialist in this area, said that the only thing that could have caused it was a laser pointer shined into the eye. Please don’t let your kids play with this dangerous toy. A Mother

I MUST BE THE ONLY ONE WHOSE KIDS ARE LIKE THIS R I K I
G O L D S T E I N
Do you ever find yourself wondering if you are the only one struggling with your children? Are everyone else’s kids treading the path steadily, or streaking ahead giving tons of nachas, while yours seem to stumble, to challenge you, to experience anxiety and fear, anger and sadness?
Actually, while we can’t see what happens behind the neighbors’ doors, it’s common knowledge that every parent goes through highs and lows. Sometimes, following our common sense and the way our parents raised us works perfectly to raise the new generation. But other times, we wonder if the kids of 2024 were even born on the same planet that we were. While there are hundreds of excellent sefarim, books, and lectures available for anyone to read and learn about chinuch, most of them focus on “regular chinuch.” Rabbi Shlomo Usher Tauber saw firsthand that there was a lack of resources to learn about “crisis chinuch” — raising children who struggle. Parents were contacting his coaching practice with problems and no idea how to handle them: a child with social issues, a child with panicky feelings, a preteen who doesn’t want to go to school. A child who is suddenly withdrawing into a shell of silence. How does a parent deal with such issues? And if they are not dealt with, small issues balloon into large problems, with ripple effects on the siblings and the home as well as the suffering of the child. The hardest part for Rabbi Tauber was watching children suffer damage that could have been prevented with better skills and a deeper understanding of childrens’ psyche. Their parents loved them, but simply mishandled their issues. Raised by his father, Rav Ezriel Tauber a”h, with a passion to be active and help Yidden, Rav Shlomo Usher knew that if he had kochos and information available

which could help, he had to use it. Reasonably priced and accessible by teleconference, the Behirus course is his answer. Imagine a parenting course with clear answers that work to solve dilemmas, based on the wisdom of our gedolim and the timeless Yiddishe way of understanding a child. Imagine it was given by a twenty-year veteran parent coach who has helped and supported thousands of families. And imagine you could listen to the classes in the comfort of your own home and your own language. That is Behirus, and last year, 5000 parents took advantage of the opportunity it offers. This year, the course will be a series of four one-hour sessions. The classes will start with the foundations of chinuch and move on to complex issues like the child with a challenging personality, or the child who suddenly changes or withdraws. Monday evenings, the course will run in Yiddish, and Tuesday evenings in English. The classes are automatically recorded and available afterward, so you can listen again and again, using the material as a source of strength.
An Ounce of Prevention “The single most important message? That a child should always feel understood by his parents. No matter what he does, and even if they say ‘no’ to him, he should feel understood.” Rabbi Tauber is passionate about the “Four S” framework. He calls it “preventative chinuch.” A child has to feel Safe, Secure, Seen, and Soothed in his home, and it’s his parents who create that safety framework, b’siyata dishmaya preventing problems from developing and festering. Rabbi Tauber gives an example of how regular chinuch can be dangerous in a crisis situation, and how awareness of your child’s emotional world will guide you away from inflicting hurt. “We’re all aware that a Holocaust survivor can be triggered by certain colors or clothes or dogs, which remind them of February 14, 2024

educational issues were always present. But since Hashem has created our more comfortable, coddled modern lives, tolerance and resilience have weakened, so if people fall, they stay down, instead of climbing. Listeners are welcome to leave messages, comments, and send their own questions to Rabbi Tauber’s confidential email behiruscoaching@gmail.com. Last year, he says, he replied to close to 3000 emails after the course. Among the thank yous and the requests for mekoros for the ideas on the course, many listeners commented on their new understanding of their children. Far more surprising was that dozens of listeners said that they now understood themselves better. The course had offered understanding and comfort of their own inner child’s pain. Whatever stage your family is at, whether you want more confidence in handling your little ones or teens, Behirus offers clarity and strength to parents. Let your children benefit from the wisdom and expertise of our Torah sources, relevant and tailored to a new generation. Acrobatic Suspect in Custody in Miami Beach Hotel Robberies Members of several families who were robbed while vacationing in Florida are breathing a little easier now that a local man is in police custody. According to reports, a thief scaled the back wall of the Alexander Hotel on Collins Avenue and 55th Street on the morning of January 17, leaping from balcony to balcony in search of unlocked doors. Five units were broken into, with victims including at least one family from Boro Park. The Miami Beach Police Department got their first break in the case when a gold watch that had been reported stolen during the break-ins was sold. Police used high-tech equipment, including license plate cameras and surveillance videos to track the seller, who was identified as Anthony Butler, to his northwest M i a m i-Dade home, where he was arrested and placed in custody. The 34-yearold Butler waived his rights and confessed to the robberies. Shoes recovered from his home matched prints that were found on the balcony of one the apartments that had been hit in the eighteen-story hotel. Butler is facing charges of
burglary of an unoccupied dwelling and grand theft. His bail was set at $27,500 for the Alexander robbery, as well as two others that also took place in January.
Glass-Smashing Thief Hits Health Food Store Again Lightning struck for the second time at Health Emporium, with a thief making off with $2,000 in cash after a February 8 break-in. Police believe that the person responsible for last week’s break-in also targeted the store in June. In both incidents, the thief broke through the store’s plate glass window in the predawn hours and headed straight for the cash register, grabbing whatever bills he could before fleeing through the broken glass and heading in an unknown direction. Security footage of last week’s incident shows the man, dressed in a black hoodie, brown pants and white sneakers, rifling through the cash register as the store’s alarm blared. According to Shmira founder and director Levi Leifer, Health Emporium is one of the few stores in the area that doesn’t have metal bars or gates over its windows, making it a tempting target for thieves.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s plan to slap drivers with a $15 toll for driving south of 60th Street could go into effect in mid-June. That information surfaced last week during the start of a court case filed by the State of New Jersey, which sued the MTA in an effort to halt congestion pricing. The MTA planned to start collecting the tolls as early as May, hoping to use an estimated $1 billion in collected funds to upgrade its train, bus and commuter railway networks. The agency said it would announce its final fee structure by late March, setting the stage for the last steps of the approvals process. Oral arguments in the New Jersey lawsuit, one of several filed against the MTA, are set to begin on April 3. While New Jersey has called congestion pricing “a brazen money grab,” with its residents already paying a toll to cross the Hudson River, residents of Staten Island and the Bronx have expressed concern that it will bring more vehicles to their roads, creating both traffic and air quality issues. The delays in the congestion pricing rollout have already proved problematic for the MTA, which was relying on the additional toll monies to fund infrastructure initiatives. Queens City Councilman Bob Holden expressed his frustration last week, criticizing the agency, as well as those who rammed congestion pricing through the approval process. “NYers are clear: they reject the congestion scam tax,” wrote Holden. “Sad when taxpayers resort to legal action because those in office ignore their voices. Hey @MTA, how about tackling the waste in your agency first? Then, you can make ‘critical improvements’ you’ve neglected for years.”

CHAPTER 44 Riva flounders in the aftermath of her sudden resignation. Lani dissuades her from dismissing Maddie — who turns out to have another job.
T
he reward for enduring life in the basement all those months was that now, when moving day approached, there was no packing to do. They would simply take everything upstairs and organize it in their brand-new closets. Still, Lani did want to pack some things into boxes, so they wouldn’t have to climb the stairs a thousand times. So after finishing her morning’s work in her mother’s kitchen, she pulled out some grocery boxes and started emptying the basement’s kitchen cabinets. She paused when she heard voices coming from upstairs. Poking her head out the door, she saw Chaim Tzvi standing with Mikhail, the closet guy. “My wife says you did a great job,” Chaim Tzvi said. “You gotta trust the women with these things, huh? To me, a shelf is a shelf. But 90

what do I know? We men just write out the checks, charasho?” Mikhail, a person Lani had never witnessed smiling, emitted a throaty chuckle. Lani slithered back inside and closed the door softly. Leave it to Chaim Tzvi; he could get a tree to be his friend. And with his magnetic personality, he always got things moving. He was just… great. Back in the basement kitchen, Lani noticed the time and panicked. She’d planned on running over to the hardware store to buy temporary shades for their new windows, but she had to put together some sort of meal for her kids first; they’d expect supper when they came home, move or not. As she slit open a package of chicken, her cell phone beeped. She washed her hands quickly and answered. “Mrs. Lani, it’s Louis, the car-

penter. Can you come upstairs for a minute? I want you to show me how high you want the medicine chest mounted.” “Oh, okay. I’m coming.” She abandoned the chicken and ran upstairs. Louis was in the kids’ bathroom, marking measurements on the tiles over the sink. They stood around, debating quarters of inches, and then repeated the process in the master bathroom. Good thing the other bathrooms weren’t getting medicine chests. (“They’re out of style,” Batsheva had argued. She hadn’t wanted Lani to do them in any bathroom, but Lani had campaigned for practicality, and prevailed.) The countertop installer stopped her as she headed back down. He’d come to install the quartz on the island that had been delayed and had a question for the electrician about the oven’s wiring. So Lani called the electrician, then the kitchen installer, and the electrician again. By the time she made it back to the basement kitchen, she set the oven temperature to 450 — the food would never be ready on time otherwise — and raced to clean and season the chicken. She’d barely finished cleaning the first drumstick when her phone rang again. Breathe, Lani. You can do this. But she really couldn’t do this. It was Devorah Nieder, and she was calling to ask Lani if she’d be able to swing a really large number of orders for the next morning — 22 breakfast packages. “A lot of new babies in Klal Yisroel!” she chirped. Lani absently squirted oil into a pan, while Devorah waited for her answer. Over the racing calculations in her head — if she got her girls to babysit and ran over to her mother’s house right after supper, but no, she really had to go buy those paper shades, and she also had to shop ingredients for her breakfasts, a lot of ingredients, if she accepted this job — it hazily dawned on her that she was going on one cup of coffee and no food at all, all day. I can’t. I can’t do this, there’s no way. But… 22 breakfasts… She couldn’t bring herself to say no. “Can I get back to you in a few minutes?” she asked Devorah instead.

After that, she quickly and mechanically finished cooking, and as she set the timer on the oven, an idea that had been germinating in her head crystallized. She called Chaim Tzvi to run it by him. He loved the idea and immediately agreed. Sticking Shifra into her high chair with corn snacks, Lani dialed her sister. “Riva? Where am I catching you?” Riva’s voice was grim. “Not at work, rest assured.” “Okay, listen. I just thought of an amazing idea.” She explained how crazy her schedule had become, how she literally did not have time to eat. “You’re not working now, so I was thinking, maybe you want to work for me, in my breakfast business? We’ll figure out payment, obviously.” “So sweet,” Riva said bitterly. “Rescuing the damsel in distress.” “Riva!” Lani snapped. “I’m not doing this to rescue you. I’m drowning in Mother Hen orders, and I can’t juggle them because I’m so busy with the house. I’m asking you as a favor, for me. I need your help.” “I know, I know,” Riva said apologetically. “And if it would be a favor to me, that wouldn’t make you a bad person. I lost it there, sorry.” Lani didn’t respond, just absorbed the irony of the Mother Hen plot. Riva had sent her the lead, and that lead was now paying itself back. She heard Eli whining in the background, and then Riva said, “I’ll do it. Thanks, Lan.” * * * * *
“This,” Mrs. Miller declared, stabbing a finger at the mess on her kitchen counters, “is the cutest déjà vu.” Riva peeled the lid off a family-size container of yogurt. “But we always cleaned up after ourselves when we were kids, right, Lani?” Mrs. Miller gave an exaggerated cough. “Uh, almost always, sure.” Lani puckered her face like a little kid and whined, “Maaaaaaa.” 94

“RIVA!” LANI SNAPPED. “I’M NOT DOING THIS TO RESCUE YOU. I’M ASKING YOU AS A FAVOR, FOR ME. I NEED YOUR HELP”’’ “Well, my rules didn’t change,” their mother said. “Do whatever you want in my kitchen, as long as I get it back the way I gave it to you.” She swung her bag over her shoulder. “Okay, I have to hurry here, I need to be in class in fifteen minutes. Have fun!” She left the house. She was subbing for the last two weeks of school, which was déjà vu in its own right. “I used to hate those subbing days,” Riva told Lani. “Mommy would arrive home from school a little later than me, and I hated getting home to an empty house.” “True. But she was a real stay-athome-mom anyway, even on days that she worked. It’s a mentality, I think.” “Yes. I mean, I wonder.” Riva dropped a spoonful of yogurt into a yogurt cup. “Grr, Lani, this is getting me nervous. Do I have that mentality? Why do I feel so… I don’t know — antsy, maybe — all week?” “Because you’re not used to it. Let it grow on you, I’m pretty sure you’re going to love it.” Lani folded open her notebook and slapped it down on an empty spot on the counter. “Anyway, you’re not a stay-at-home mom today, ha-ha. So let me tell you what has to happen here. I really have to fly, I promised Andy that I’d be in the house when the low-voltage guy comes.” Riva added granola over the yogurt and snapped on a lid. Then she bent over the folder and concentrated on Lani’s instructions. “That’s basically it,” Lani said when she finished her list. “Call me if you have any questions. I’ll try to be back

here by ten-thirty, eleven to help you pack everything up and send out the deliveries. And then I’ll show you what has to get done for tomorrow’s orders. Think you’ll manage?” “I’ll try. Do I have a choice? I can’t have my boss firing me…” “Very, very funny.” “No, seriously,” Riva said. “I was a real brat on the phone. You’re being so helpful, and I really appreciate it.” “Sweetie, all this Mother Hen work is actually coming from you, remember?” “Yeah, I know.” Riva tittered. “Be nice to people on your way up because you’ll meet them on the way down, huh?” “Ha.” When she left, Riva stared at her sister’s notebook, trying to orient herself. Salads, spreads, rolls, pastries, drinks. It was mindless work — and yet her mind whirled. How many yogurt cups would it take to pay their rent? How about tuition? Swimming gear for all of her kids for the summer? Glasses for Fraidy? An oven igniter? She got to work somewhat listlessly. Maybe if Lani got a large number of orders every day, they’d somehow manage to stay afloat. Maybe she should take it a step further and try to market her sister’s business, to generate more orders. Way up, way down, ha. She was nearly done with all the salads when Yaakov called. “Guess what?” he said. “We won the lottery?” “Not quite, but close.” He paused. “Nothing exciting, really. I just got a small job through Eric Moore.” “Oooh, that’s wonderful, Yaakov! I’m so happy to hear this! Baruch Hashem!” “Yeah, it’s nice. I mean, the money isn’t anything major, but I feel like, how’sh’m’sayit, it’s like a message from Hashem. Like, He’s taking care of us, He didn’t forget about or neglect us. Things will turn out okay. And also…” Another pause. “Look, we shouldn’t forget that all this is temporary. Im yirtzeh Hashem, I’ll get my license eventually, and I’ll 96

be able to operate on my own. And you know something? Reuven Bleich isn’t the only architect out there. It was a great opportunity, and it gave me great experience. We’re not in the same place we were a year ago.” “You’re so right, Yaakov…” He really was. Their family wouldn’t go hungry. They would pick themselves up from their fall, brush off the dirt and move on. Day by day. Rendering by rendering. Bagel by bagel… She went back to work with a certain lightness in her heart. When Lani showed up, a few minutes before eleven o’clock, all the packages were done and neatly lined up on the Millers’ kitchen table. “Oh, my,” Lani said. “Next thing I know you’re going to ask for a raise!” Riva grinned. “Totally.” She helped herself to a corn muffin. “Call it my coffee break,” she said. As she sat down to eat, she heard her phone ringing on the counter. “Can you see who that is?” she asked Lani. Lani glanced at her phone screen, and Riva watched as her sister dug her teeth into her lip. Riva shot to her feet. “Who is it?” she asked sharply. “Uh…” Lani stammered. She gripped the phone, as though debating if she should surrender it to Riva. Slowly, she extended her hand, and in a low voice she said, “It’s your boss.” TO BE CONTINUED…

In my brain, the time of an appointment is the time I’m meant to leave the house. It doesn’t matter if the appointment is on my block or an hour’s drive away. I’ve never learned — not even the hard way — to account for the time it takes to get to the appointment. If my appointment is scheduled for 10:00, I’ll dash out of my house at or about 10:03. ahead of time. “Getting things done in advance also helps spread wedding expenses out over a greater span of time,” Chaya posits. “The weeks leading up to a wedding cost so much money, it’s counterintuitive to allow dozens of random miscellaneous expenses to overlap.” The same applies to gifts. “I bought a bracelet for my son’s kallah before my son even entered shidduchim,” she recalls. Again, it was an expense she didn’t have to swing at the same time that she was suddenly absorbing so many other expenses. And it also provided peace of mind. “My son ended up getting engaged before the time we had set to officially start listening to shidduchim. It definitely helped to have a bracelet ready to give the kallah at the l’chaim.” This obviously can’t be done with all gifts. Chaya wanted the kallah to choose her watch and her earrings on her own, so that had to happen at the relevant time. But everything else? “I have a closet full of gifts ready for every occasion,” she shares. “I hate shopping under stress.” How does she remember all the things she has at home? “I probably wouldn’t remember what I have, but I’m constantly going through that closet. I put
together gifts and wrap them up on my own. I enjoy it, and it’s also an economical system. You buy things when you find them, not when you need them.” It’s easier to shop when you’re not under any pressure. After each wedding, Chaya looks forward to reacquiring the space that all those racks take up. “But not right away,” she’s quick to add. “Before returning all the clothing to their closets, I hang everything back up on those racks and run an inventory report. I check if anything needs to be fixed or replaced, so that I don’t discover problems next time I want to use the clothes.” She notes with satisfaction that every single thing on the racks got used the way she had intended. The week of the simcha was smooth and easy, without any unnecessary clothing crises. When her second wedding rolled around, Chaya was fully prepared. “After sorting and organizing all the clothing, I realized that I only needed two more outfits for the simcha.” It was a great relief. I’m not up to marrying off children yet, but I do have a whole lot of appointments on my calendar. What would it be like to live without my typical last-minute rushing? It wouldn’t require a racking system, but setting out clothing for children at night should be a great first step. Who knows? I may yet show up at a doctor’s office with a stable pulse and five minutes to spare.
With Hashem’s help, Chaya made it out of that dark period of illness. Now she reflects on the blessing of her foresight — foresight that she couldn’t have known would prove so critical. But it doesn’t have to take a crisis to test one’s efficiency. “My friend recently married off a child,” Chaya relates, “and when I saw her at the wedding, I just felt so bad. Don’t get me wrong; she looked beautiful. But she seemed half drunk from fatigue. She’d made it to the wedding, yes, but with so much stress and aggravation.” Chaya believes that mechuteinistes could avoid getting harried by wedding prep if they follow her system. “It works with everything,” she asserts. “Gifts, shopping, aufruf and sheva brachos planning.” If you’re going to the seamstress to fix a dress, why not take along anything that needs alterations and check that off your list? Baalei simcha inevitably spend hours at the seamstress before weddings, “I bought a bracelet for my son’s kallah before but so many of those hours could be spared if you make my son even entered shidduchim” the most out of each trip —

If you’re planning a wedding, another item you may want to add to your master list of lists is advice from Mrs. Shoshy Slomiuc, gown designer and dresser extraordinaire. the wedding. Sisters, close friends — they’re all busy getting ready just when you could use another pair of hands.” This is where a wedding dresser comes in. “When I greet the mechuteiniste, I can visibly see the tension melting off her. There are always so many things happening at once, and when the mother of the chasan or kallah knows that someone who isn’t from the wedding party is here for the express purpose of making sure everything runs smoothly, it makes a world of a difference.” When does the job begin, and
when does it end? “It begins with coordinating the big day,” says Shoshy, “starting with a detailed schedule. This includes everything from the kallah’s wake time and davening, all the way to arranging for transportation to the hall. All of the wedding gowns go in a separate car, by the way, so they arrive there in one piece.” Shoshy makes sure to arrive before the mechutanim do, and she’s
generally joined by her seamstress. She makes sure to bring along a bunch of just-in-case items, including a portable steamer.” For a mechuteiniste, there’s nothing like arriving at the hall and being told to “sit down, because everything is taken care of.” While she sits and relaxes, Shoshy makes sure the gowns get steamed first thing. Then the kids get fed so they’re not hungry, and then she gets them dressed, all the way down to the last detail. Then the bubbies arrive, and it’s their turn to feel like royalty. Shoshy
TIPS FROM THE TRENCHES For families who aren’t planning to hire a dresser, here are a bunch of pointers to add to that list that keeps growing. But Shoshy’s tips are additions you won’t regret! Really think through how you’re getting to the hall. And do not put on those gowns at home! All you need is one car door slamming on the fabric, and you’re in trouble. Rather take the gowns separately in another car, and get dressed at the hall. Always account for unexpected delays. If you need to be at the hall at three o’clock, aim to be there at two-thirty. Chances are you’ll only be there at three anyway, and in the event you’re early, no one will throw you out. If you actually have extra time, you’ll find a Tehillim and have some quiet time to daven.

Little kids are not fun when they’re hungry. Make sure they’re fed and have them use the bathroom before dressing them. Also bring along extra food (that doesn’t get them dirty or make a mess) so the kids don’t get hungry later. Make sure your gowns aren’t too long. This is something I often struggle with, when my clients show up in too-long gowns that need to be hemmed — or even cut! — at the very last minute. Gowns should never drag on or even touch the floor. The proper length is a half-inch to an inch off the floor, and even shorter when it comes to little kids. Back when your gowns are being fitted, pay attention to details. Was there delicate fabric that could get caught in the zipper? Which side should

will adjust their wigs, make sure their dress is sitting just right, and otherwise take care of whatever still needs to be done. Once the actual wedding begins, Shoshy either leaves, or she stays until after the chuppah, after the first dance, or all the way until mitzvah tantz, depending on the job. “If I’m there for the kallah’s side, staying until after the chuppah will allow me to help the kallah get ready
for pictures.” Shoshy’s greatest challenge is when the mechutanim don’t show up on time. “Obviously,” she says, “we improvise as needed, but then the photographer gets nervous, and the ca-
the seam allowances face for the gown to lie flat? Which pleats need to sit in which direction? This way, when you actually get dressed, you’ll know exactly what to do. Men, try on your suits! I had a client whose husband sent his suit to the cleaners and only put it on for the first time at the hall. Well, he was going to put it on, but couldn’t, and my seamstress had to let it out on all sides so he should be able to get into it. Not a good idea! I always steam my customers’ gowns at the hall to get that finished, crisp look. It may be worthwhile to invest in a portable steamer — which isn’t pricey in the least — if you’ll be dealing with a bunch of gowns. Think of everything you might need at the wedding. Take a needle and thread to match every dress, as well as black thread for the men. Things happen at weddings, and you need to be prepared. Also take along scissors, safety pins, bobby pins, a comb, Static Guard (especially in the winter), pain relievers (both for kids and adults), mouthwash, toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant.

terer gets nervous… That’s not fun.” But no matter the stresses involved in preparing a family for a wedding, there’s no other job in the world for Shoshy. “There’s nothing like getting people ready for a simcha. There’s just something so beautiful about what I do. And my favorite part of all? That’s seeing a calm mother, who takes my advice when I tell her to sit and relax because everything is taken care of.”
For mothers who will be wearing something on their wigs under the chuppah, remember to bring that along too. Before the wedding begins, make sure to prepare the dek tichel, along with some pins, behind the kallah’s chair so it’s ready when it’s needed. Designate one person (a sister of the mechuteiniste is a good idea) to be in charge of tissues. The mother of the chasan or kallah will need tissues during kabbalah panim, but she shouldn’t be holding them the whole time. Rather, have someone stand by to bring them to her and take away the used ones. Most important of all, if you’re marrying off a child, remember to be present at the wedding. A simcha like this is meant to be enjoyed, so try to minimize the stress wherever you can and revel in the nachas!

ten all dressed up after a long day to attend our simcha. Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to do our utmost to try to show our hakaras hatov to our guests. For how can we make a simcha without guests with whom to share it? When I married off my first child, Overwhelmed was my middle name. Ever since I played the role of mechuteiniste, I’ve been noticing things at simchas and comparing it to my big night. For example, I spotted a mechuteiniste’s warmth and collected presence, and reflected on how I dealt with challenges at my child’s wedding. I also observed that guests do not always feel welcomed properly by the simcha’s hostess. Our close friends and family in attendance are usually not the ones affected by our performance — they know the real version of ourselves. Rather, it’s the people from the neighborhood, shul, work or more distant relatives who don’t know us that well who may leave the hall thinking that perhaps they should not have gone through the whole bother of attending our simcha… I am positive all hostesses would be utterly horrified if they were informed that their guests didn’t feel welcomed and comfortable at their simcha. Therefore, here are some tips for simcha hostesses so they can be their very best selves on the big day. Just like we troubled ourselves to find the right hall, the perfect dress and the accurate list of addresses for invitations, so too must we do our best to make each guest feel appreciated. Focusing on the guests’ needs will shove our own shyness and awkwardness to the back burner. Here are a few examples of how to make your guests feel welcome.

Tell them how much it means to you that they were able to enhance your simcha with their presence. Treat them for what they are: the most chashuve guests. A note to other guests: When wishing mazel tov to older guests, remember to introduce yourself! As a family grows, it may be more difficult for all great-aunts and great-great-aunts to remember who you are, but they may feel bad to ask.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION At a drop-in-and-say-mazel-tov vort or aufruf kiddush where people are milling about rather than sitting down for a meal, make a conscious effort to place yourself close to the entrance in a visible spot. At your child’s kabbalas panim, try to stay put right near the kallah. Make it easy for the guests to find you. There is nothing quite as frustrating as guests circling the hall a few times to locate the baalas simcha. The guests will appreciate the convenience of finding you immediately more than the exquisite fruit platter on display that you paid so much money for.

This suggestion might sound silly to some, totally irrelevant to others. But many guests have testified that it makes them feel warmly received when the hostess takes a step toward them. Literally. That means that as the guest is wending her way to you,

ished with the first one, they turn in the direction of the second. It may sound like a good idea, but guests usually see right through this and know quite well that the hostess was aware of their presence all along. I once approached a baalas simcha who was deep in conversation with a guest. I placed myself on the side, patiently waiting my turn. I was so touched when — although she continued speaking to the first person — she reached out to me to take my hand in hers in a warm, friendly clutch. She sent a powerful message of, “I am so happy you came,” even though she couldn’t actually say those words to me yet. If a particular guest gets into a lengthy conversation, try to explain to her that you will likely have to interrupt her to accept quick mazel tov wishes from others. It’s not fair to keep people waiting.
What should you do when you are accepting mazel tov wishes from one guest, and another guest approaches you? NAVIGATING THE DANCE FLOOR The act of inviting people at the wedding to dance with you in the center of the circle could use a skilled military strategist to ensure perfect maneuvers. But don’t worry too much. Guests do not expect perfection. However, having the intention — even before the wedding — to dance with as many guests as possible, and making a concerted effort to do so, will very likely lead to better outcomes. A note to the guests: When you are dancing in the center of the circle, you be the one to leave the dance. It’s very uncomfortable for the baalas simcha to “terminate” the dance. Give a few round-and-rounds, then wish her mazel tov and say, “You have so many people to dance with — go ahead.” If the guest feels uncomfortable putting an end to the dance, think of how much harder it is for the baalas simcha. A note to kallahs: You can do the tremendous mitzvah of hachnasas orchim by including the chasan’s side as much as possible. After all, it is their simcha too. Many kallahs and mechuteinistes take dance lessons before the wedding. Since they lack dancing know-how, they know that unless they prepare themselves, they will not make the best impression. This article highlights the need to prepare ourselves in a different way, one far more important than looking good on the dance floor. Let’s do our best so that our guests walk out of our simcha with a spring in their step.

In the world of family, mechutanim play a special role, adding warmth and color to the fabric of our lives. Here we celebrate the mechutanim whose acts of kindness made shared journeys even more special.

Music to My Ears Eight weeks before their daughter Kaila’s wedding, crisis struck the Friedman family — a devastating fire destroyed their home and everything in it. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but with just two months to the chuppah and weeks’ worth of kallah shopping reduced to ashes, their lives were upended. The Freidmans found a temporary new home and tried to create a semblance of normalcy. One morning, there was an unexpected knock on the door. To their surprise, it was their mechutanim, the Steins, who had made a special trip to show their support for the kallah and their future mechutanim during this trying time. With candid charm, Mrs. Stein, Kaila’s future mother-in-law, remarked, “I can’t even imagine sticking my pinky toe into your shoe right now!” Her unique form of expression left an enduring imprint. But it wasn’t just words; they walked in bearing three massive boxes filled with thoughtful gifts. Among the surprises were a stereo, a collection of sefarim for the kallah’s brother, and adorable little toys for the youngest member of the family. The gift of music brought unexpected comfort to the
Freidmans in the aftermath of the fire. The stereo, now a symbol of resilience and recovery, played melodies that became the soundtrack to their journey as they rebuilt their lives. In the midst of chaos, the mechutanim provided not only material gifts but a sense of support, a reminder that even in the face of adversity, shared kindness could create a melody. In those trying times, the mechutanim played an unexpected but crucial role, turning a symphony of challenges into a chorus of compassion and solidarity.
Talent Ticket One day during Chaya Blau’s engagement, her excitement overflowed, and she started dancing where she stood — which was, unfortunately, on a staircase. With uncertain grace, she slipped and slid down the stairs, earning herself a trip to the ER with a dislocated shoulder. In the emergency room, a doctor and some nurses put the shoulder back into place. “Help! I’m getting married in two weeks,” Chaya told the attending doctor, nurse and

even the hospital janitor. And each time, she added, “And the mechutanim better not find out what happened!” Chaya’s shoulder was guided back to its socket, and she left the hospital with strict instructions to take it easy for two weeks. Secrets are hard to keep, and an unidentified source promptly briefed the mechutanim on the situation. The next day, a box arrived, adorned with the cautionary label, “Handle with Care.” The box contained a handful of hand-themed delights: hand creams, gloves, baking mittens and an umbrella with a handle. Accompanying this treasure trove was a fun poem about how it’s all in Hashem’s hands, a reminder that even in instances of injury, there’s Someone running the show. The box was an injection of joy amid the gloom of recovery, a reminder that even when life hands you an unexpected twist, good humor helps. Give a hand to these exceptional mechutanim who truly handled this well!

C is for Care As if navigating the trials of a daughter in shidduchim weren’t difficult enough, Sury Morgenstern found herself grappling with another daunting challenge: cancer. It felt as though the sun had set prematurely. Amid the tornado of diagnostics and treatment, a flicker of light emerged: her daughter Fraidy got engaged! But within the context of a health crisis, the engagement promised to be an emotional roller coaster. From the start, the mechutanim, the Goldbergs, were angels in human guise. At the l’chaim, the mechuteiniste, Leah Malky, said, “We’re all here for you. This is a journey we’ll navigate together. And when you’re ready, im yirtzeh Hashem, we’ll celebrate the wedding gezunterheit.” It was such a relief that the mechutanim maintained the perfect balance of respect and compassion, and that they managed to break the ice so graciously. Sury, a courageous warrior, danced between joy and fear, celebrating a simcha while waging her personal battle against an invisible foe. However, setting a date for the wedding proved complicated amid the interplay of wedding preparations and hospitalizations. Remarkably, the mechutanim never pressured her. “Give yourself all the time you need,” they said. When things were finally looking up, a wedding date was set. Sury was scheduled for surgery a month before the wedding, a procedure that would hopefully reclaim her health. Despite her deep desire to support Fraidy in the final weeks leading to the big day, she was a shadow of herself, with little energy. It was during this time that a thoughtful text from Leah Malky arrived. Are you up for a visitor? Sury welcomed the prospect of spending time with someone she had grown to love over the past few months — a bond forged through shared trials. Although this special woman had entered her life less than half a year before, Sury felt a genuine connection and looked forward to their time together. Recognizing the unwavering support of the mechutanim throughout their darkest hours, Sury was confident that her daughter Fraidy was joining a wonderful family.

A Celebration of Flu
Warmed Through
Once upon a time, there was a brandnew chasan and kallah. Balloons were still flying, the chasan was still practicing his new in-laws’ name and the kallah was just getting to know her new grandmothers. And then the chasan came down with the flu. Chassanim are certainly experts at many things, but nursing a fever is not one of them. And Yanky was no different. He didn’t just adopt the usual sickbed demeanor; he transformed into the king of the common cold. Ensconced in layers of blankets with tissue boxes strategically arranged within arm’s reach, Yanky emitted pitiful sighs so loud that they reached his new mechutanim’s ears. The mechuteiniste, a hint of mischief in her voice, declared, “Why should the kallah hog the spotlight? Let’s give the chasan a taste of the royal treatment, too!” Enter the ever-prepared mechutanim, swooping in with a care package that would make any sick day feel like a cozy retreat. They unveiled a shawl fit for a flu-stricken king, a siddur to request Divine intervention, and an assortment of teas and herbal concoctions that claimed to be the elixir of life. And so Yanky found himself basking in the glory of a flu-induced celebration. The shawl became his royal cape, the siddur his trusty sidekick, and the teas and herbs his adult lollipops. As Yanky sipped his chamomile tea, he marveled at how swiftly he had bounced back from the flu. For even in the face of fever and chills, mechutanim with a healthy sense of humor have a way of expediting the refuah. We won’t say if Yanky was at all enticed to feign illness again. However, duty called, and with a commitment to his reputation as a serious learner, he traded his temptations for the glow of his Gemara once more.
“You’ll still see us enough,” Chaim Minkowitz promised his siblings in New York when he married Ruti and moved with her to her native Bnei Brak. As the oldest in the family, his absence was keenly felt. But true to his word, Chaim and Ruti came to Boro Park twice a year, for Sukkos and Pesach. By the second Pesach after their wedding, the Minkowitz household echoed with the happy laughter of Yiddy, Chaim and Ruti’s beloved baby. Chaim’s siblings playfully doted on the little one, engaging in friendly squabbles over who should bathe or dress him in his adorable outfits and tiny shoes. Yiddy, the adorable bundle of love, undoubtedly stole the show with his irresistible cuteness. Amid all the delight that little Yiddy brought into the family, there was an additional cause for celebration: 21-year-old Zissy got engaged. The simcha was truly complete, enhanced even more by the fact that Chaim and Ruti were still in New York to share in the joyous occasion. The vort was on a Monday, and the junior Minkowitz family departed to Eretz Yisroel the next day, on Tuesday. No one could have predicted that the joyous occasion would be followed by devastating news just days later, on Wednesday, when Yiddy passed away from crib death.

As soon as the Minkowitz parents received the heartbreaking news, they booked tickets and boarded the next flight to Eretz Yisroel to be with Chaim and Ruti at this painful time. Zissy and her siblings were left to grapple with their profound loss all on their own. The abrupt shift from celebration to tragedy was like a sudden storm cloud eclipsing the joyous occasion. Erev Shabbos arrived, and Zissy’s future in-laws, in an act both thoughtful and comforting, delivered a tray of enormous, freshly baked warm challos. The simplicity of the gesture struck the perfect chord: neither excessive nor understated, but profoundly touching. The accompanying note, bearing words of sympathy and love, held the family close during their darkest hours.
Unmasked Kindness When the Weisfelds made a shidduch, joy filled the air, and a wedding date was set with excitement and blessings. It was a given that Kalman and Goldy Weisfeld, their married couple spending their shanah rishonah in Eretz Yisroel, would come in for the wedding. But there were post-Covid complications — closed borders, expired passports — and it seemed that Kalman and Goldy would have to celebrate from afar. The realization that they might miss the wedding hit them hard. “You’ll represent us, right?” Goldy made her parents promise. Enter the Feketes, Goldy’s septuagenarian parents. Determined to represent Kalman and Goldy, they concocted a plan that was as amusing as it was heartwarming. In their fun-loving manner, they hatched the ultimate plot to crash the aufruf — Covid style. Armed with a printer, scissors and a dash of creativity, they printed larger-than-life pictures of Goldy’s and Kalman’s faces, which they transformed into the most fashionable and Covidfriendly accessories: face masks! Not only did each mask obscure the nose and mouth, it covered the eyes, ears and chins, too. On the morning of the aufruf, Goldy’s parents burst into Kalman’s parents’ home, faces beaming from ear to ear, quite literally. Laughter rebounded through the room as everyone tried to contain their surprise. The Feketes proudly declared themselves the official representatives of the absent couple, proving that even closed borders couldn’t keep the spirit of celebration away.
These stories are snapshots of real-life moments, filled with warmth, laughter, and the kind of gestures that turn in-laws into family. Sometimes, family isn’t just about shared bloodlines but about the bonds we build, one act of love at a time. 148

WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU GOT BEFORE MARRYING OFF A CHILD?
INCLUDE THINGS AT THE SIMCHA THAT AMPLIFY YOUR OWN PERSONAL JOY, THINGS THAT YOU ENJOY AND MAKE YOU HAPPY, EVEN IF IT’S SOMETHING OTHERS DON’T DO. – Dini Fleischer
TWO WORDS: BE MEVATER. – Sara Schwartz
Someone told me to expect at least five things to go wrong on the day of the wedding. When the first thing goes wrong, say, “That’s one...” When the next thing goes wrong, say, “That’s two…” This type of thinking helps you stay calm when something doesn’t work out — like when the florist delivers the wrong flowers, which is what happened to us…
– Malky T. During the meal, go around to all of the tables to greet your guests. It will give you the chance to make personal contact with them, which will make everyone, especially you, feel good.
– Michal H.
You know how it is when you’re planning a wedding — everything feels very important, and you want everything to be as perfect as
her advice and didn’t regret it.
AT SOME POINT IN THE SIMCHA, STOP MOVING, SIT DOWN, LOOK AROUND, AND TAKE IT ALL IN. I DID THAT FOR JUST A FEW MOMENTS AND MADE EVERLASTING MEMORIES.

possible. But most people have to choose which corners to cut so they can spend in other areas. My mother advised me not to skimp on two things: the kallah’s gown, and her sheitels. The gown is what makes the kallah feel beautiful and confident as she begins her new life, and her sheitel will affect how she will look every single day. We followed
For the mothers of the chasan and kallah: Don’t buy a new sheitel for the wedding. It takes time to “figure out” and break in a new sheitel; usually, it has to be worn for a while and taken back to the sheitelmacher multiple times before it’s just right. Better wear your current sheitel, which you already know how to wear, styled in honor of the wedding.
– Shevy
WHEN I MARRIED OFF MY SON, SOMEONE TOLD ME THAT IN ORDER TO BE A GOOD MOTHER-IN-LAW, ALL I HAD TO DO WAS LOVE MY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW UP AND DOWN AND SEE ONLY HER GOOD QUALITIES. I LOVED THAT ADVICE. – Yiity Kirsch The Boro Park View

DON’T FEEL PRESSURED TO BUY EVERY SINGLE THING BEFORE THE WEDDING. YOU DON’T LIVE ON MARS, AND THE STORES WILL BE OPEN AFTER THE WEDDING. ENJOY THE PREPARATIONS.
THINGS TEND TO GO WRONG ON THE DAY OF A CHASUNAH. JUST KEEP REPEATING, “ZOL OISGEIN OIF DEM” — LET IT BE THESE SMALL THINGS THAT GO WRONG, AND NOT MORE IMPORTANT ONES. AND ENJOY THE WEDDING! – Esti Klein
– Chumie Posen
At the simcha, stay in the moment. Don’t get stuck on what’s not working out or going wrong.

Encore sock store, you’d never guess at the sinking feeling I have when it’s time to pay. You’d never imagine the endless indecision about whether or not I can buy another set of pajamas for the baby, or maybe it’s better just to stick with what I have and wash everything more frequently. Are pajamas a luxury? Does everyone else stress over pajamas? How did we get here? But even stronger than the torment and despair was a burning sense of determination. We were now on the same team. We were determined to solve this problem. Together. Because that was the only way it could be solved. We agreed that the first step would be tracking. We would write down every single expense. Every time we spent any money, no matter how small a sum, we would write it down. Mortgage, food, tuition, car insurance, gas. Whether it was $15 for a haircut, $10 to chip in for a teacher’s gift, $24.89 for a takeout lunch. Everything. We decided to meet on the first Sunday of every month, back in the park, to review our spending. I needed support, but I didn’t want to talk to anyone. It was just too big and too embarrassing. But a few weeks later, neurotically tracking every cent, I ran across a magazine article about people who had been in enormous debt and managed to get out of it. They climbed the mountain, paid it all off, and started their lives over. Reading their stories gave me hope: Other Other people people had been here and done it; we could do it had been too. By charting our expenses for three months, here and we got a very clear picture of where we were spending our money. Now we could decide what done it; we to cut (eating in the pizza shop once a week), and how we could maximize our money (shopping could do it too in discount warehouse stores). We also learned to prioritize what we had to buy now and what could wait. Amazingly, we stopped accruing debt. Not even one more dollar. The next front we attacked was our debt. My husband worked with credit card companies to get the interest rates lowered on our cards with balances, and on settling the outstanding balances. He also asked his boss for a raise. I left my eight-hour-a-week, low-paying job, and found a job that brought in significantly more money (and was much more satisfying). What happened in those first three months surprised me. I felt enormously empowered. I stopped spending money out of boredom and instead got creative about spending time without spending money. I stopped obsessing anxiously over how many pairs of socks I could buy and began walking into stores with confidence in my choices. I noticed that I was slowly changing. Money had more value, in a good way. I now made sure to pay the cleaning lady on time, and no longer argued with a taxi driver over the price. Everyone works for a living, and every penny counts. For myself, and for others. A month later, we met again in the park. And we met again the next month. A year later, we still meet on the first Sunday of every month to talk about money. Instead of dread and despair, now we look forward to these money meetings, as we like to call them. But back then, the meetings were fraught with tension and stress. I made a conscious decision not to get caught up in despair. Progress was measured in baby steps, and we celebrated the tiniest improvements. At the end of each meeting, we’d pump each other with words of encouragement and emunah, reminding each other, and ourselves, that Hashem is with us on this journey.

THE TOSFOS SHABBOS CONTEST CONTINUES
Adding in Order to Subtract With Tosfos Shabbos, the dividends are enormous. After all, it’s a proven method of protection in turbulent times. Says the Zohar Hakadosh on the fact that Moslems observe their day of rest on Friday and the Christians on Sunday, the fact that we, Klal Yisroel with our Shabbos, is surrounded on either side is so that the two should have no connection. And when we extend Shabbos on both sides, we’re taking away their power. The Rema Mipano says in the same vein that in order to guarantee protection from Hashem from the Moslems, we need Tosfos Shabbos on Fridays, and to be protected from the Christians, we must add to Shabbos on Motzei Shabbos. By taking away from their “day of rest” on Friday and Sunday, we are mevatel their klipos. * * * * *
“After Hashem gave me my life back post-Covid, I wanted to do something for Him in return. I realized what a gift He’d given me, not only my life but my mind, the fact that I can learn and share with others.” So attributes R’ Shaul Katz the drive for his Tosfos Shabbos initiative for kids: a way to open the gates of bracha, hashpa’a and protection in this world. Fitting indeed for a Yid whose essence bespeaks constant gratitude. He encapsulates this in a gem of an original vort: “We say this every Friday night in Ribbon Ha’olamim: “Modeh ani lefanecha…al kol hachesed asher asisa imadi,

Well, here’s a loaded noun. Defined as either a “person who makes plans” or a “list or chart with information that is an aid to planning,” it seems that planners use planners well. And hey, please don’t prepare any other plans before you get the finer deets of planners down pat!
PLANNED BY WHOM? Personal diaries and almanacs preceded the planner. The former were blank books, the latter annual calendars that included helpful information pertaining to the schedules and industries of their users — for example, weather forecasts, farmers’ planting dates and tide tables. It isn’t clear if it was the American Revolution that got in the way, or perhaps Philadelphia publisher
Robert Aitken was simply too far ahead of his time, but his 1773 brainwave of the first published daily planner didn’t gain much traction. Clever department store exec John Wanamaker picked up the thread in 1900 with his Wanamaker Diary, a daily planner peppered with advertisements from his catalogs — sure to keep the Wanamaker products in customers’ minds every day.

Another version and winner — still in use today — is the Lawyer’s Day planner of the Day-Timer brand by lawyer Morris Perkin, introduced in the 1960s and marketed as an organizational tool for the busy attorney. The trajectory of schedule planners was upward from here on, with more and more brands jumping on the bandwagon to create different versions of this extremely helpful tool.

PAPER PREVAILS In an age of everything digital, much of daily planning has been relegated to apps and such. Nevertheless, they say, paper and pen will never die. How reassuring, because physical writing anchors information in the brain a lot better than typing does.

PLANNER TYPES From the personal to academic and much in between, there exists a planner for every schedule. There are health and fitness planners, family organization planners, work planners and wedding planners (both books and people with that last one!). Bullet journals allow for more freestyling and control over your planner page layouts, and daily, weekly and monthly planners let you choose the extent of your foresight.
BALABUSTA’S BOON No one needs to plan ahead more than the Yiddishe mother, housewife and breadwinner, to name a few of the roles she plays. Enter the Balabusta’s Daily Organizer. This gem is a sixteen-month calendar including Jewish and secular dates, menu planning, grocery and to-do lists, with health and organizational tips thrown in, too.
BULLET JOURNAL
PLANNERS AND ADHD There are plenty of adults with an ADHD-style brain (myself included!) who struggle with time management — and planners scare us silly. That’s not to say that scheduling goes out the window, though. I find it helpful to jot daily tasks and grocery lists on a large magnetic whiteboard on my freezer, and important dates on a large wall calendar. That’s about how much planning I can handle, although sharing this info on planners may just change that.
ARE PLANNERS PRODUCTIVE? Short answer: Yes! The benefits of this modest scheduling aid include the following empowering list: • It helps declutter the mind as you jot things down. • It reduces stress as you plan ahead, because proactive planning rather than passive living is a proven stress-buster.
• Using a planner can improve memory and learning. • Being well-planned boosts happiness. • It makes for more mindfulness as you go about planning and executing tasks in a deliberate way. • Best of all, it improves your overall chances of success.

OF COURSE. THAT’S WHAT IT SAYS IN THE CONTRACT YOU SIGNED, SEÑOR RUBINOV.
I READ THE CONTRACT SEVERAL TIMES. I DID NOT COME ACROSS THAT CONDITION.
YOU ARE OBLIGATED TO INCREASE THE FARM’S INCOME AND TAXES WITHIN A FEW MONTHS…
…OR THE CONTRACT IS VOID AND THE ARGENTINE GOVERNMENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO TAKE BACK THE FARM AND RESELL IT.
I STILL CAN’T SEE IT, EVEN WITH YOUR GLASSES.
HERE.
WITHIN HALF A YEAR? THAT’S IMPOSSIBLE!
WHAT DO YOU MEAN? HERE, TAKE A LOOK.
SO ALL MY BROTHER HAS TO DO IS WAIT SIX MONTHS AND THEN BUY THE FARM BACK FROM YOU!
“ACCORDING TO THE CONTRACT...” HEY! THE MONEY WILL NOT BE RETURNED!
I’M AFRAID YOU’LL HAVE TO WAIT A LITTLE LONGER, SEÑOR PEDRO. THE MASTER OF THE WORLD IS THE ONE WHO BROUGHT ME HERE, AND IT IS HE WHO MAKES THE EARTH FLOURISH.
WRITTEN & ILLUSTRATED BY: BATSHEVA HAVLIN
HALF A YEAR IS A LONG TIME!
WITH HIS HELP, I WILL BE ABLE TO RESTORE THE FARM WITHIN SIX MONTHS.
RECAP: AN OFFICIAL EXPLAINS TO MR. RUBINOV AND THE MORENO BROTHERS THAT THE FARM ORIGINALLY DID BELONG TO PEDRO MORENO. SINCE THE FARM WAS NEGLECTED, IT WAS SOLD TO MR. RUBINOV ON CONDITION THAT HE REHABILITATE IT. IN THE MEANTIME, THE ELDER MORENO OFFERS TO HELP MISHA CARE FOR A SMALL WOUND.
IF, WITHIN SIX MONTHS, YOU WANT TO BUY BACK YOUR PROPERTY FROM ME FOR A FAIR PRICE, I’LL BE HAPPY TO SELL IT TO YOU AND PURCHASE ANOTHER FARM IN THE AREA.
INSOLENT JEW! YOU THINK I’LL WAIT? I’LL BURN YOUR FIELDS! I’LL LET YOUR CATTLE LOOSE! I’LL...
YOU WON’T DO ANY OF THAT, SEÑOR MORENO.
POLICÍA (POLICEMAN) ALVAREZ WILL REPORT TO ME ANY ACTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST THE RUBINOV FAMILY. AND EVEN IF THERE IS NO CLEAR EVIDENCE OF YOUR INVOLVEMENT, YOU WILL BE HELD GUILTY AND RESPONSIBLE. IS THAT CLEAR? GOOD DAY TO YOU.
OKAY, AT LEAST THAT. I HOPE THE THREAT HELPS.
RIBONO SHEL OLAM! THIS IS A GREAT TEST OF FAITH. TO REHABILITATE SUCH A WRECKED FARM WITHIN A FEW MONTHS! BUT YOU ARE THE ONE WHO DETERMINES THE HARVEST.
PLEASE HELP ME AND PROTECT MY FAMILY.
DESPITE DON SILVA’S PROMISES, I FEEL UNEASY...
YEHUDA RUBINOV’S HUNCH PROVES CORRECT, FOR INDEED...
POOR THING. RAISING HIS CHILDREN ALONE AND DEALING WITH ALL OF THIS...
TO BE CONTINUED...
ACTS OF VIOLENCE? WHAT ACTS OF VIOLENCE? THERE WON’T BE ANYTHING TO REPORT, RIGHT, SEÑOR POLICÍA?
