The article about people who’ve had unpleasant surprises while they were doing construction was enlightening and thought-provoking. I wanted to share my own experience.

Around a year before I renovated my own house, my husband shared with me an incident that happened to his friend who is in the construction field. The friend’s employee made a very minute mistake in the design of a certain job, which was only noticed upon completion.

He had to dismantle and redo the work from scratch, losing the entire profits of the work in the process.

When I heard this story, my initial response was a comment about how insensitive that client was to allow a Yid to lose all the money from the job when it was something so minor that could have totally been forgiven and lived with. But I quickly retracted my words, realizing that I really could not judge that family since I’ve never been in that situation and can’t understand just how much heart and soul went into that element of the design and how much it meant to them. I remember adding that I hope that if I’m ever given that test, I would have the strength to overlook it and not cause a huge financial damage to a fellow Yid (even if it was within my rights to insist on a redo).

About a year later, I was checking in on my newly installed kitchen, which was finally complete with the beautiful quartz countertops and backsplash that I had painstakingly chosen. My heart fell when I realized that the wrong stone had been installed. I had shopped around for weeks to find the perfect piece, and it was the whole focal point in my kitchen. All the colors and design elements of the kitchen were chosen based on that quartz.

We called the (Jewish) installer who looked into the matter and confirmed that it was the mistake of the (non-Jewish) vendor. He was more than willing to rip out the stone and replace it with the right one, but when we inquired whether he would be reimbursed by the supplier, he answered in the negative. I instantly knew that, although the mistake really bothered me and would continue to bother me every time I looked at my kitchen, I would not be able to live with countertops and walls that were built with another Yid’s blood. We assured him that we would keep whatever had been installed.

I’m grateful that Hashem had granted me the opportunity to preview a similar scenario from an objective perspective so that when I was given the challenge, I had the insight and strength to pass the test.

Of course, every situation is different, and it definitely depends on how much the mistake will affect the client

and how big of a loss the other party will incur, but it’s definitely something to think about.

In response to your informative article about tzava’as Rav Yehuda Hachassid, I felt compelled to share the following.

Although it is controversial as to how stringent one must be with the parameters stated in the tzava’ah, it’s imperative to realize that those communities that have accepted certain standards must uphold those standards. This isn’t something to be taken lightly. Many rabbanim would go to great lengths to follow the dictates of Rav Yehuda Hachassid by not allowing a room or structure to be occupied before ensuring that any relevant concerns were addressed.

The experience of a close relative of mine bears this out. For several years they were not blessed with children. After some time, an acquaintance mentioned that she recalled that the couple’s apartment had been renovated before they moved in. She wondered if perhaps a wall was closed off, or another violation of the tzava’ah had occurred.

After checking with the landlord, they discovered that there had, in fact, been a wall closed off prior to their moving in. Shortly afterward, they suffered yet another loss and decided to look at the original plans of the house. To their shock, they realized that there was another door that had been closed off, even before the landlord bought the house from its original owner. They immediately made a small opening at that location, and shortly thereafter, the yeshuah came.

Perhaps every young couple who moves into an apartment should ask if there was any prior construction or changes done in the apartment. This can prevent much heartbreak.

before I quit my job. Even though I was really burned out from working, I was also a little nervous about the enormous change in my schedule — and, of course, about money. But I don’t have more time than I used to, and we don’t have less money. Money comes from Hashem, and you can keep yourself busy with other things. If you have kids at home, you won’t ever feel bored. You’ll be less stressed out, perhaps, but not bored. My suggestion is to write a list each night detailing what you’d like to accomplish the following day, and you’ll be just fine. And don’t forget about self-care!

I wanted to respond to T.M. and anyone else who is still working for their prestige, satisfaction or out of fear of change: Leaving your job is one of the best gifts you can give yourself and your family. You can’t imagine how much it will positively impact your life. Your kids deserve a mother whose career is just that: being a mother. Instead of being harried, anxious and constantly chasing your tail, you’ll have time to drink a coffee in silence (ahhh…) and trust me, between cooking, cleaning, shopping, laundry, and appointments, you won’t even have time to miss your job. Don’t wait anymore; just do it!

Disclaimer: For those who are working to support their families, either because their husbands are learning or for any other reason, keep going. Hashem should give you lots of ko’ach!

What Money Can’t Buy

Moshe Rabbeinu gathered Klal Yisroel to give them Hashem’s instructions regarding building the Mishkan. First, he reminded them of the mitzvah to observe Shabbos.

“Six days, work may be done, but on the seventh day, you shall have sanctity — a day of complete rest for Hashem” ( Shemos 35:2).

The main point is that the seventh day be kept kadosh. Why does the pasuk need to say that work may be done during the six-day work week?

A MEMBER OF the legendary Rothschild family was an advisor to the British prime minister. The two were also business partners, working together on various ventures.

One Friday night, when Mr. Rothschild was sitting with his family for the Shabbos seudah, there was a knock at the door.

“The prime minister needs you very urgently,” a messenger said.

“If it is a matter of life and death, I will come,” Rothschild replied, “but if it’s related to business, I cannot come. It is our Shabbos today.”

A short while later, the messenger returned. “It’s in regard to business matters, but the prime minister emphasized that he must see you now.”

Rothschild was unfazed.

“We have an agreement,” he said. “On Shabbos I do not work. I cannot come.”

The third time, the messenger returned with a threat. “The prime minister instructed that I inform you that if you don’t appear immediately in his office, he will rescind every business deal between the two of you, and you’ll be discharged from all responsibilities in the parliamentary body.”

I received the pink slip, Rothschild thought to himself as he closed the door and returned to his Shabbos table. This was not a simple secretarial position; it was a partnership involving millions, and it was in danger of being lost… And besides, forfeiting the position would mean relinquishing a position of honor and power.

But Mr. Rothschild passed the test. He remained strong in his conviction, and pleased he had overcome the nisayon, whatever the repercussions may be.

On Motzei Shabbos, he received a message. The prime minister wanted him to appear in his office immediately. When Rothschild entered, the prime minister embraced him warmly. “I owe you lots of money,” he said, and explained what had taken place.

“Last night, I had a meeting with an international millionaire. During our discussion, I told him that I know a Jew who would not sell his Sabbath at any price. He didn’t believe me, but I was stubborn. We made a bet.

“After putting down a huge sum of money, I sent my messenger to call you. Because you did not waver or betray your principles, I earned a huge amount of money. And it’s in your merit — and in the merit of your Sabbath,” the prime minister concluded, and then made an astounding announcement. “You deserve half the reward…”

It isn’t typical, to say the least: an award-winning speaker and bestselling business author in the greater corporate world — who is also a frum Yid. But Kivi Bernhard, originally from South Africa, wears those hats, and more.

Following the incredible success of his book, Leopardology, which promotes his creative business approach, Kivi was invited to speak for Fortune 500 companies such as Amex, Bank of America and Coca Cola. His presentation keeps audiences spellbound.

One day, several years ago, Kivi was invited to deliver the keynote address at a Microsoft convention. After accepting

the prestigious offer, Kivi learned that the convention was scheduled to take place on a Shabbos.

There was simply no way he could keep his commitment. He immediately called his contact and explained, “I apologize for backing out, but I don’t work on Saturdays. I won’t be able to make it.”

A few days later, he received a call from the senior vice president of Microsoft, begging him to reconsider. He offered double the pay, and then triple, but Bernhard kept to his principle, “I do not work on Shabbos, regardless of how much you’ll offer to pay.”

The executive then made an astounding offer that he assumed would be too good to refuse. “I’ll send you a blank check. You can determine the appropriate compensation.”

To his surprise, Kivi declined. On the other end of the line, Kivi found himself holding a dead receiver; the executive had slammed down the phone in frustration.

Microsoft was determined to have Bernhard speak, and they ultimately changed the date of the convention to a Sunday to accommodate their Jewish guest speaker.

Several months after the convention, Bernhard received a phone call from the very same Microsoft executive who had slammed down the phone on him.

“I’ll send you a blank check. You can determine the appropriate compensation”

“I want to share a follow-up to our last conversation,” he said. He repeated that several days earlier, he had been sitting with Bill Gates, cofounder of Microsoft, and several other Microsoft executives in Gates’ private jet.

“We were discussing the convention, and Gates turned to me and asked why the event had been postponed. When I told him that the keynote speaker was Sabbath-observant and refused to attend on the initial date, which was a Saturday, Gates was impressed.

“I told him that we offered that you name your price, but you still refused. Gates then exclaimed, ‘That’s what happens when you have something money cannot buy!’

“Gates explained that he could buy anything he wants — any building, airplane or yacht — but all of his money isn’t enough to buy one Sabbath of the Jews.”

The Chofetz Chaim explains:

The parnassah of the entire week — how much a person will earn and how much success he will have — is dependent on his shemiras Shabbos. If one does not observe Shabbos properly, he won’t have success in his work all week long, but if he does keep Shabbos, he will receive bracha for the entire week.

The Zohar Hakadosh writes that all brachos and hashpaos of the entire week are dependent on the seventh day.

This is what Moshe Rabbeinu taught us. How much parnassah should we expect to earn during all six days of the week? It all depends on how we keep Shabbos!

Trash Bins Mandate Goes Into Effect at All City Businesses

March 1 didn’t just mark the start of a new month in New York City; it also heralded the latest stage of Mayor Eric Adams’ war on trash, with all businesses in the five boroughs now required to use lidded containers in lieu of piling garbage bags up on the sidewalk.

The law affects 200,000 businesses in the five boroughs, reported ABC News, including mom-and-pop shops. Warnings will be issued during March to those who fail to comply with the new mandate. That grace period will end on April 1, with fines starting at $50 and going as high as $200.

City sanitation spokesperson Joshua Goodman said that businesses are now required to use a solid bin with a secure lid. Because their trash is collected by private haulers and not New York City, businesses are advised to contact their garbage companies directly to find out what kind of bins to use.

Speaking at a February 29 press conference, Mayor Eric Adams said that commercial trash makes up approximately half of the one million pounds of trash collected in New York City each year. He noted that come fall, all one- to nine-unit residential buildings will be required to containerize their trash as well, with similar plans taking effect later for larger buildings.

The mayor has made slashing the city’s rat population a priority, and eliminating garbage is a significant part of that plan.

“This is going to really bolster our fight against rodents and the unsightliness of trash bags throughout our city,” said Adams.

With Nearly All Toll Readers Installed, MTA Remains Confident in Congestion Pricing’s Approval

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority held four public hearings on its controversial congestion pricing plan over the past week, and the agency is so sure that the plan will be-

come reality this spring that it has already installed 95% of the system’s toll readers.

NBC News reported that the MTA had installed 104 of its 110 toll readers as of last week. Agency chairman Janno Lieberman said that he believes that it is “highly probable” that the MTA will win lawsuits that have been filed on both sides of the Hudson River to prevent the new tolls from taking effect south of 60th Street in what is being referred to as Manhattan’s “central business district.”

The MTA approved congestion pricing in December, gleefully anticipating that the hefty tolls will provide funding that it plans to use to improve mass transit, while also alleviating traffic. Tolls in the CBD will be $15 for cars, $24 for small trucks and $36 for large trucks, from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends, with discounts in effect during off hours. Tolls would be charged just once per day per vehicle, while taxis would pay $1.25 per ride and rideshare apps would pay $2.50 per ride. Those coming into Manhattan through the Lincoln, Holland, Queens-Midtown and Brooklyn-Battery tunnels would receive a $5 credit per car, a discount not being made available to those entering the city from the George Washington Bridge.

Hydrant-Fountains May Be the Wave of the Future in NYC

They are a valuable tool when it comes to battling flames, and are a major nuisance for those hunting for a parking spot, but some New York City fire hydrants might also become drinking fountains in another year or two.

Hoping to steer people away from single use water bottles and sugary drinks, the City Council is considering a bill that would modify certain fire hydrants, turning them into drinking fountains. If the Council approves the idea, five hydrants in each borough would be included in the program.

The plan is the brainchild of Councilman Erik Bottcher, who has seen similar concepts implemented in Montreal, Calgary and Budapest. Bottcher noted that single-use plastics are hazardous to the environment and could also negatively impact people’s health.

Bottcher’s bill proposed a two-year pilot program, which would be created by the heads of the FDNY and the Department of Environmental Protection. The hydrants would be retrofitted so they could be used for drinking, refilling water bottles or as water sources for dogs. The fountains would be operational from at least April through September for the duration of the program.

“We picture neighbors gathering around a fire hydrant, filling up their water bottles, chatting and building connections,” said Bottcher, adding, “There’re so many possibilities.”

Construction Snarls 18th Avenue

Repairs to the 18th Avenue Long Island Railroad bridge are creating headaches for area residents, with ongoing road closures from 52nd to 54th Street expected to last into mid to late March.

The area is subject to alternate lane closures between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday. Approximately 40 parking spots have been temporarily eliminated to allow twoway traffic to continue in the parking lane. Another 18 spots on 53rd Street between 17th and 19th avenues are also being taken up by the construction, creating additional problems for drivers.

Traffic will revert to regular patterns after work hours and on weekends.

The project was originally scheduled to run from February 19 through March 15. With the work beginning a week later than expected, its completion is likely to be delayed as well.

Countdown Continues Toward Rare Solar Eclipse

A rare solar eclipse is just one month away, with viewers along its 100-mile wide path of totality, stretching from Mexico

through Canada, eagerly anticipating an opportunity to see the moon completely blocking the sun for just over four minutes, darkening the daytime sky, weather permitting.

The eclipse will take place on Monday, April 8, when the moon will pass between the sun and the earth. Those in locations where the moon’s shadow completely covers the sun, known as the path of totality, will experience a total solar eclipse, while people in other locations may see just a partial eclipse, where parts of the sun will still be visible.

This year’s eclipse, the first in seven years, is known as the Great Northern Eclipse, and will travel through thirteen states. While the only major cities in New York that will experience a total eclipse are Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, according to the National Eclipse website, the sun will be 89.9% obscured by the moon when the eclipse passes through New York City at 3:25 p.m.

NASA scientists warn the more than 181 million people living within the path of the eclipse not to look directly at the sun during the eclipse without using proper eye protection, such as special eclipse glasses, in order to avoid serious eye injuries. Gazing at the sun even through camera lenses, binoculars or telescopes can also damage the eye, unless they are equipped with a special solar filter.

After entering the United States through Mexico, the eclipse’s path will take it through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine, with some visibility in Michigan and Tennessee if the skies remain clear.

AT&T Offers $5 Credit to Customers Impacted by Service Outage

Five dollars may not buy much these days, but AT&T is estimating that that is the cost of a single day’s cell service, as the phone company offers a credit to customers who were affected by a February 22 outage.

The widespread outage left tens of thousands of AT&T customers without service for nearly a day. A letter sent to employees by company CEO John Stankey explained that the outage was caused by an error that occurred as part of the company’s ongoing network expansion, and detailed how the company prioritized its repairs, starting with first responders.

“One thing is clear — we let down many of our customers, including many of you and your families,” wrote Stankey. “For that, we apologize.”

Individuals and small businesses determined by the company to have been most impacted by the outage will receive a $5 credit to compensate them for the inconvenience of being without service.

“I believe that crediting those customers for essentially a full day of service is the right thing to do,” explained Stankey.

AT&T Business, AT&T Prepaid and Cricket customers are ineligible for the credit, but will have other options made available to them.

CHAPTER 1

The raised podium gave Yoel an almost aerial view of the crowd. It was a bonus he didn’t take lightly, considering his five-foot-three height. He opened the Gemara to the last page of Maseches Kesubos, inserted his speech notes as a bookmark, and gently closed the cover.

To his left, the band was beginning to work its way through the playlist he’d sent them. The conductor waved his baton to the beat of Chad Yasvin Yisroel, the same tune Reb Meir Shapiro sang with his bachurim in Chachmei Lublin. The stage lights magically bathed the violinist’s ponytail in green and the gleaming baby grand in blue, and Yoel could practically see the sound vibrations extending to the corners of the tent.

It had been worth flying in that yeled hapelah from Eretz Yisroel, he decided. The heartfelt pitch and rolling rrr’s as he sang “...chazi, chazi, banei, banei, banei chavivei…” had the desired effect on the crowd. Definitely next level, his mezhinikel, Menachem, would say.

But what Yoel loved most of all were the hand-painted acrylic murals lining the entire length of the tent. It hadn’t been easy to hang them on tent walls, but it had been worth the effort. They were magnificent images of fathers and sons learning throughout the generations. His family was part of this sacred chain, and that’s why these siyumim were so special. In fact, Yoel thought, he’d commission a custom mural of his own family for next year’s siyum.

He watched Shia Furst from Furst Class Events direct the waiters at the meat station and issue instructions to the lighting guy. It had been Yoel’s idea to do a tent in their own backyard. He’d liked the idea of everyone under

his roof — or at least on his property. Russy, although worried about keeping the tent warm enough for a December evening, had been thrilled at the idea of being so close to home. She always was.

“Nice, no?” Yoel called to Russy, who was standing off to the side.

Russy nodded. She was about to say something else when she spotted Yosef Yehuda’s in-laws.

Her face instantly grew anxious, and she gripped the back of an acrylic chair tightly as her mechutanim approached.

“Mazel tov!” Yosef Yehuda’s motherin-law said.

“Thank you,” Russy said. She swallowed.

Yosef Yehuda miraculously materialized to help the conversation move along. “This tent is so inviting, no?” he offered.

“Lovely idea. It’s special,” her mechuteniste said warmly.

soon as she was able to, she moved to a corner next to the kids.

Yoel clutched the podium ledge. Why? Why did Russy have to act like that? She was the hostess. Couldn’t she stand in the center and greet the guests like a, well, hostess, instead of acting like a scared child? He watched her in the corner, her diamond earrings glistening in the dim light, and sighed.

Chavi, of course, was the first to notice him at the podium. He watched her gather her kids, a gaggle of black curls, and herd them in his direction. She grabbed one of the mousse cups out of eight-year-old Zevi’s hand, wiped his mouth with a napkin, and dragged him along. That one son of hers was often more trouble than all of her girls combined.

“Mazel tov, Tatty, and lots of nachas,” Chavi vintched him, with a still grimy Zevi at her side.

Her husband, Shloimy, echoed the mazel tov, and Yoel smiled at his bas yechidah. He’d done it. Given her the dream husband — the dream life.

“MazeI tov to you!” He pumped Shloimy’s hand. “You’re just as much a mechutan at this simcha as I am. Without your chiddushim, the learning wouldn’t have been the same!”

Shloimy arched his shoulders forward. “Shver, it’s a kavod to be part of the learning program and the family.”

Chavi’s little girls, Ruchele, Malky and Sori, each shook Yoel’s hand and wiped away his kiss. He handed each of them a $50 bill and whispered, “Buy yourself something nice.”

Chavi gently pushed Zevi to the front. “Tell Zeidy mazel tov for the siyum,” she cued him.

Zevi leaned on the shtender, his foot catching the mic wires. The shtender shook dangerously, and the large Gemara slipped off it, landing with a thud.

“I want fifty dollars, too!” he yelled as Chavi, tight-faced, dragged him off the stage.

Shloimy hurried to pick it up. He kissed the Gemara, picked up the scattered notes and placed them in the inside cover. So much for the bookmark, Yoel thought.

The commotion caused the rest of the family to look up. One by one, they came forward to greet Yoel.

First, Yosef Yehuda and his wife Miri came up. Yoel kvelled — the rav had recently asked his son to serve as the rosh kollel at Zichron Baruch’s Choshen Mishpat chaburah. Then Chuni and Chumi followed, walking up the steps with their sweet baby Baruch.

Yoel repeated the same lines to each of his children. The siyum was a combined effort of the nightly Brandwein family Gemara chavrusashaft.

Daniel and Rechy, the newlyweds living in Eretz Yisroel, walked up, smiling. The same Daniel who’d hiccupped his way through the conversation last month, something about being in the middle of the zman, about Rechy missing her best friend’s wedding.

“It was worth coming, wasn’t it?” Yoel winked at his son.

“Of course,” Daniel said. “I wouldn’t miss it for the world.” But he didn’t look at his wife as he said it.

Yoel bristled. Who, exactly, paid for their apartment at Schneller’s and vacation at the Waldorf and their nights out at Rav Shefa? Couldn’t they graciously fly in for the family siyum? They’d all worked so hard to arrange the learning to work with the Israeli time difference. And it was Chanukah. A time for family. He still couldn’t believe they were flying back right after the siyum to make it to Rechy’s friend’s Shabbos sheva brachos

The guests started arriving, and the event morphed from a family meal into a grand-scale event. Shia put up the floral mechitzas, and the annual Brandwein Zos Chanukah Siyum was in full swing.

Soon Barry, the lawyer at Brandwein Holdings, also showed up, a satin white yarmulke pinned to his hair.

He clasped Yoel’s hands, “Nice. Nice. You’ll introduce me to your kids soon, yeah?”

Yoel nodded slowly. Something niggled at him. He had something to tell Barry, but he couldn’t remember what it was. He had planned on calling his lawyer today, but it had been so busy, he forgot.

“Barry, thanks for coming!” Then it came to him. The letter from a lawyer. “Barry! I can’t believe I forgot to call you today. I got an interesting letter today from a law firm. Something about the St. Nicholas house.”

“No! Joel, not that house! You know I don’t like it.”

Yoel looked at his lawyer. He knew good and well that Barry didn’t like it, but what could he do?

“So we’ll tackle it tomorrow?” he asked.

Barry nodded.

Before he had time to dwell on the letter, Menachem’s Rosh Yeshivah walked in.

“Reb Yoel,” the Rosh Yeshivah said, “Menachem is really shteiging. With such chinuch, it’s no wonder!”

Yoel accepted the nachas with aplomb. It had been a good idea to donate that new paroches for the yeshivah.

Gradually, the rest of the mechutanim arrived; it was a shared simcha, after all, and he accorded them the honor they deserved.

After the main course was served, Rav Viener walked in. He wasn’t much taller than Yoel, but the crowd instantly quieted as he made his way up to the stage.

He was fortunate to have Rav Viener lead Zichron Baruch, the shul he had built and named after his father. It had been tremendous siyata d’Shmaya that the Rav had moved to the neighborhood precisely when the shul was being built.

Furst fiddled with some wires and brought the cordless mic to the stage. He placed it on the shtender, and Yoel moved to the side to let the Rav take his place. Even the ladies section became completely quiet. To Yoel, it seemed as though even the meat had stopped sizzling.

The Rav smiled softly and raised the mic. His gaze swept over the crowd and took in the murals.

“On such a night,” he began, “when the Torah’s ohr is so strong, it is an honor for me to be here.”

He paused meaningfully, drawing the gaze of each guest.

Suddenly, the quiet was shattered by a loud crash and the sound of something breaking. On the floor, sliced in half, lay the custom-designed handpainted mural, with a very disheveled looking Zevi Schon looking on with a mixture of bewilderment and guilt.

French pastries! Visions of buttery croissants float through the mind’s eye. I was always enchanted by the concept of French food, but French baking is known to be difficult to master. After trial and error and lots of research, however, I’ve found that this isnt always the case.

In this recipe set, I broke it all down into doable, manageable steps so that you, too, can create mishloach manos goodies like a true French pastry chef. It’s important to pay close attention to detail for flawless results. Follow the instructions precisely, and the results will be all the more satisfying.

BRIOCHE BUNS

Pronounced bri-yosh, these buns are a delight. With citrusy undertones, a tender interior and crispy crust, they are irresistible and worth the extra effort.

The recipe may seem like it yields a small dough, but it doubles as it rises. Mine yielded 35 small rolls, which are perfect to package up for mishloach manos along with a container of jam or chocolate spread. These freeze very well and are best when rewarmed in the oven.

INGREDIENTS

3 cups all-purpose Wondermills flour

¼ cup granulated sugar

2 tsp. instant yeast

2 tsp. kosher salt

4 eggs

½ cup warm oat milk

¾ cup margarine, softened

1 lemon, zested

1 egg white

1 T. water Pearl sugar, for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS

1. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, combine flour, sugar, yeast and salt.

2. Stir in the eggs. With the mixer on low speed, gradually add warm oat milk, beating until dough comes together.

3. Increase mixer speed to medium-high, and beat for 6 to 8 minutes. Test dough using the windowpane test. (Take a small ball of dough, and stretch it into a square. Keep on stretching until it becomes a thin film in the middle without breaking.) If dough is not ready, beat 1 minute more, and test again.

4. Switch to the dough hook attachment. With mixer on medium-high speed, add margarine in three additions, letting each incorporate before adding the next.

5. Beat until a smooth and elastic dough forms and pulls away from sides of the bowl. If the dough is too sticky, add up to 2 tablespoons (16 grams) flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.

6. Add zest, and beat until combined.

7. Spray a large bowl with cooking spray. Place dough into the bowl, turning to grease the top. Cover the surface of the dough with plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately 1½ to 2 hours.

8. Refrigerate the dough for 30 minutes.(Alternatively, dough can be made one day in advance, and the entire rise may take place in the refrigerator overnight. Remove dough from the refrigerator, and let it come to room temperature before proceeding.)

9. Divide the dough into small balls. Keep in mind that they will double in size, so you can keep them small. Place the balls on a lined baking sheet. Cover with a towel or saran wrap, and allow to rise for 1 hour.

10. Brush gently with egg wash, and sprinkle with pearl sugar.

11. Bake at 350° for approximately 20 minutes, until golden.

VARIATION

Brioche buns are often taken up a notch by hiding a square of good-quality chocolate in the center of each bun.

HAZELNUT MACARONS

There’s something elegantly adorable about perfectly formed, ruffled macarons, and the good news is that they taste as good as they look!

Before you begin, read through the recipe carefully. Technique and precision are important for flawless results. Resist the urge to add liquid food coloring as this can destabilize the meringue and cause the macarons to crack.

INGREDIENTS

2 egg whites, room temperature

Pinch of Baker’s Choice cream of tartar

¼ cup extra-fine sugar

¾ cup Grain Brain superfine almond flour

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

1 cup Baker’s Choice classic hazelnut cream

DIRECTIONS

1. Make your own extra-fine sugar by mixing regular sugar in a food processor for a couple of minutes. Set aside.

2. Make sure the mixer and beaters are clean and dry before whipping the egg whites. With the mixer on medium speed, whisk whites until foamy. Add cream of tartar, and whisk until soft peaks form.

3. Reduce speed to low, then very slowly add sugar. Increase speed to high, and whisk until stiff peaks form.

4. Sift the almond flour and confectioners’ sugar twice with a medium mesh strainer.

5. Add flour mixture to the egg whites, and fold with a spatula repeatedly by lifting the batter and then pressing against the sides of the bowl until mixture is smooth and shiny, and the batter falls in unbroken ribbons when lifted with the spatula

6. Transfer batter to a pastry bag fitted with a ½-inch plain round tip, and pipe ¾-inch rounds 1 inch apart on parchment-lined baking pans (metal pans work best) or on silicon mats, dragging pastry tip to the side of the rounds rather than forming peaks.

7. Tap the bottom of each sheet on your work surface to release trapped air. (If there are still large air bubbles remaining, you can gently pop them with a toothpick.)

8. Preheat the oven to 375°. Let macarons stand at room temperature for 15 minutes.

9. Reduce oven temperature to 325°. Bake 1 sheet at a time, rotating halfway through, until macarons are crisp and firm, about 13 minutes.

10. After each batch, increase oven temperature to 375°, heat for 5 minutes, then reduce to 325°.

11. Let macarons cool on sheets for 2 to 3 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

12. Sandwich two same-size macarons with 1 teaspoon filling.

CHOCOLATE ORANGE SABLÉS

CHOCOLATE ORANGE SABLÉS

Named sablés for the french term that means “melt in your mouth,” these cookies are bursting with complexity and flavor.

ORANGE DOUGH

1½ sticks margarine, softened

1 orange, zested

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

1 large egg

1 T. fresh orange juice

1½ cups all-purpose Wondermills flour

1¼ cups Grain Brain superfine almond flour

½ tsp. kosher salt

1 cup pistachios

CHOCOLATE DOUGH

2 sticks margarine, softened

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

1 T. fresh orange juice

1 tsp. vanilla extract

1½ cups all-purpose Wondermills flour

½ tsp. kosher salt

½ cup cocoa

1 cup chopped pistachios

1 cup turbinado sugar

DIRECTIONS

1. For orange dough: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat margarine, zest and confectioners’ sugar until fluffy.

2. Add egg and orange juice, beating to combine.

3. In a medium bowl, whisk together flours, salt and pistachios. Gradually add flour mixture to margarine mixture, beating just until combined.

4. Line a 9x13” baking pan with plastic wrap. Press dough into the prepared pan, and refrigerate until firm, 30 minutes to 1 hour.

5. For chocolate dough: Toast the pistachios in a 375° oven for 10 minutes, mixing once after 5 minutes. Allow to cool.

6. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, beat margarine, confectioners’ sugar, orange juice and vanilla until fluffy.

7. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, cocoa, and pistachios.

8. Gradually add flour mixture to margarine mixture, beating just until combined.

9. Spread chocolate dough on top of orange dough, smoothing as much as possible. Cover layered dough, and refrigerate until firm, at least 2 hours.

10. Preheat the oven to 350°. Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

11. Remove the pan from the refrigerator. Using excess plastic wrap as handles, remove dough from pan. Cut into 2 x ¼” slices using a wet knife.

12. Place turbinado sugar into a shallow dish. Roll edges of dough in sugar to coat. Place on prepared pans at least ½-inch apart.

13. Bake until firm and just beginning to brown at the edges, approximately 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool completely on a wire rack.

It’s not uncommon to find a chasan at the shtreimel store within days of announcing his engagement. Meilich Lerner, son of Lerner’s founder, oversees production and retail at Lerner’s Monroe location. He joins us from the showroom, where he’s been helping chasanim choose their shtreimels. Mr. Lerner leads us into a production area, where we’ll learn about the labor of love that defines each shtreimel in the showroom.

“All of our shtreimels are made of fur from the sable family,” Mr. Lerner says, pulling out a sable pelt. “However, only the tails, which have the longest fur, are used in the shtreimel.”

He then shows us a large, 30-gallon-sized bag of sable tails, and passes around a handful for us to feel. Each tail is just a bit larger than a fist, and although Mr. Lerner shares that approxi-

mately 135 tails are used in an average shtreimel, it’s hard to imagine how they come together to form the tall, regal shtreimel we know. By the time this tour is done, I’ll have my answer, but there’s quite a bit of background we need to fill in first.

With various sources for fur in North America and Europe, there is generally reasonable access to the quality and quantities Lerner Shtreimel needs for production. There are many breeds within the

sable family, though, and different seasons may bring more of one than the other.

“The shtreimel industry is one of the few industries in which sourcing, production and sales are all done by the same team,” Mr. Lerner says. This drives home the point of how shtreimel production is a serious form of art, and the team is invested in each part of the effort to ensure consistent quality.

When the pelts are delivered to Lerner Shtreimel, they undergo a gentle yet thorough cleaning process, with a mix of water and chemical baths before they are deemed fit for use.

“Longer fur makes a nicer shtreimel,” Mr. Lerner explains. “A shtreimel has a life of its own.” To demonstrate, he lifts a splendid, teninch shtreimel that has been created for a new chasan. “This shtreimel has extra long hair and is considered a real beauty.” Indeed, the fur tips create a soft ripple as he slowly turns the shtreimel around.

Because longer furs are harder to come by, such shtreimels demand a higher price point, but for those who understand the soul-speak of a shtreimel, the cost is well justified. Customers generally select their desired height at the first visit, where they are able to inspect and try on sample shtreimels to see what they are comfortable with.

“A rain shtreimel is very similar to a regular shtreimel,” Mr. Lerner says. “The hair is generally shorter, though, and some of them have a band that holds it together internally for a stronger hold. This allows the fur to remain in place, pre-

venting damage.”

ELEVATING FUR TO SHTREIMEL

How are elongated tail-shaped balls of fur, which arrive at Lerner Shtreimel’s production floor in shipments weighing hundreds of pounds, actually turned into a shtreimel?

Mr. Lerner pulls out a large, leaf-shaped piece of parchment.

“This is what holds the fur together,” he says. “Each tail is drawn apart to maximize surface space, and then glued onto a parchment.”

We look at a shelf full of leaf-shaped parchments, with the fur already sewn on at the edges. Each parchment will eventually be sewn onto the circumference of the shtreimel’s hand-made, velvet kappel, with each parchment overlapping the previous one.

This method allows shtreimels to be lighter on the fur, which translates into a leaner price on the pocket, and a more

lightweight shtreimel on the head.

However, the assembly of these pieces is a task requiring patience and precision, as each strip is sewn together with attention to the direction of the fur, ensuring a seamless flow and aesthetic appeal.

“Here’s a collector’s item.” Mr. Lerner picks up a shtreimel all of two and a half inches in height.

“It’s what people above the age of 60 may have worn when they got married.”

While that shtreimel, created decades ago, is a third of the size of the average shtreimel being purchased today, its weight is almost equivalent. The reason for that is because the parchment method wasn’t used back then; full tails were used instead, creating lots of dead weight.

CARING FOR YOUR SHTREIMEL

Owning a shtreimel comes with the responsibility of preserving its beauty. Proper care, including protection from sunlight, humidity and rain; appropriate storage; and regular maintenance will ensure that your shtreimel will last for a long time.

USE A SHTREIMEL BOX Always store your shtreimel in a specially designed shtreimel box when not in use. These boxes are crafted to protect the fur and shape of the shtreimel, keeping it safe from dust, moisture and accidental damage. Avoid placing heavy items on top of the box.

USE GENTLE TOUCH Always handle your shtreimel with clean hands, and handle it as little as possible to avoid transferring oils or dirt to the fur. When putting it on or taking it off, try to touch only the interior or the brim.

AVOID HARSH WEATHER Water and heat are the enemies of fur. Try to avoid wearing your shtreimel in humid weather, rain or snow. If it does get wet, never use direct heat to dry it. Instead, let it air-dry naturally, away from

“This is what the shtreimel looks like after all the parchments have been sewn onto the kappel,” Mr. Lerner explains. While securely sewn onto the kappel on one end, the rest of the furfilled parchments flap loosely as we walk by.

“This bone is at the core of a shtreimel’s stability.” Mr. Lerner waves a plastic stick similar to a cable tie. Each parchment has a thin “pocket” running along the center, where the bone is inserted. Once the bone is firmly encased in the pocket, it is gently rounded, pulling the parchment into the desired shape. After each one has been shaped to fit its designated spot, the results are a tightly-bound, furfilled circumference.

GET IT PROFESSIONALLY CLEANED Fur requires professional cleaning to maintain its quality and longevity. Take your shtreimel to your local shtreimel center, or a fur specialist familiar with shtreimel cleaning, annually or as needed.

DUST IT REGULARLY Use a soft, natural-bristle brush to gently remove dust from the fur. Brush in the direction of the fur to avoid damage.

USE MOTH PREVENTION Moths can cause significant damage to fur. Use natural moth repellents like cedar blocks or lavender sachets in your storage area, but never place them directly in the shtreimel box as they can transfer scents or oils.

ADJUST FOR SUMMER STORAGE During warmer months, consider placing your shtreimel in a cool, dry place when not in use. Some choose to store it in a breathable bag within its box to protect against dust and pests.

A VELVET KAPPEL

While the shtreimel’s fur is most prominent, and undoubtedly gets the most attention, its kappel (or cap) is what sits right on the wearer’s head, and a proper construction is vital for the

wearer’s comfort and the shtreimel’s longevity.

Each customer’s head size and precise measurements are taken during the customer’s first visit, and the kappel is then custom-created for each customer.

Constructed of approximately ten different materials, including leather, velvet fabric, pliable boards, and a host of protected, trade-secret components, the kappel is completely hand-made in a painstaking process. A metal contraption sits in a corner, and while it is not in use when we are visiting, Mr. Lerner tells us that this is a sewing machine. The sewing machine, though, is not run by electricity. A foot pedal beneath the contraption controls sewing needles on top, and expert tailors bring the kappel’s components together with the help of this manual machine.

You may have noticed in the past a shtreimel that looked different — in fact, you weren’t quite sure it was a shtreimel at all — but you weren’t sure exactly what was different, or what that difference was called. Here are some other, similar headwear in the shtreimel family.

SPODIK Boasting a taller, more cylindrical shape than the more common shtreimel, the spodik is primarily worn by chassidim from Polish backgrounds, such as Ger and Alexander.

KOLPIK Made of brown fur, the kolpik is worn on Shabbos and Yom Tov by many grandchildren of chassidishe rebbes. It is also used by many chassidishe rebbes for special weekday occasions such as Chanukah, Tu B’Shvat, and the simchas of their chassidim

SHTREIMELCHIK A shorter and often narrower version of the shtreimel, mostly worn by bachurim of Yerushalmi descent and other chassidish groups in Yerushalayim.

RUHZINER SHTREIMEL A cone-shaped kappel, which often peeks out past the surrounding fur, sets apart the Ruhziner shtreimel, worn by chassidishe rebbes of Ruhzin descent, such as the Boyan and Sadigura rebbes. The fur height in Ruhziner shtreimels is often lower than that of the standard shtreimel.

AN ERA OF SHTREIMEL CREATION

Next we pass a large storage area where there are close to a hundred shtreimels, each encased in a signature Lerner Shtreimel box. Most of these shtreimels

are brand-new and awaiting a final fitting. Others have been left at Lerner for repair, or for a simple refresh. There are shtreimels in varying heights, showcasing the evolution of shtreimel style.

While Lerner Shtreimel has several locations in the U.S., England, and Eretz Yisroel today, I ask Mr. Lerner to tell me more about the foundation of the company.

“My father, Reb Shimon, started Lerner Shtreimel from scratch,” Mr. Lerner says. “It all began in his dining room on Ross Street in Williamsburg almost 50 years ago.”

As a creative and artistic yungerman, he wanted to use his affinity for handwork as a means of parnassah He knew basically nothing about shtreimel creation, but he set out on a mission to bring high-quality shtreimels to the market. This was in the pre-Internet days, and every little bit of knowledge was earned by physical research and hands-on trial and error.

“He traveled a lot,” Mr. Lerner says of his father. “He wanted to find the best of everything out there.” From furriers and chemists to various craftsmen, Mr. Lerner pounded the pavement, pulling bits and pieces together into hardcore knowledge that has formed the base for thousands of Lerner shtreimels worn by chassidim the world over.

The creation of a shtreimel is a process steeped in tradition, precision and artistry, a craft that the artisans at Lerner Shtreimel have honed to perfection.

The Shtreimel Story

The most go-to description of a chassidishe Yid is by saying that he wears a shtreimel and bekishe.

Finding the Source

The origin of the shtreimel is quite unclear, and there are various theories suggesting the source of it. One version states that it was a result of an old decree dating back to Czarist Russia. Even the story about this decree has two versions. According to one version, the decree forbade the Yidden from wearing a yarmulke. To circumvent the decree while maintaining their religion, they surrounded their yarmulke with a piece of fur. Considering the frigid climate in Russia, this appeared to be normal headgear, and thus the Yidden managed to keep wearing their yarmulkes without fear. Another version explains that the decree aimed to insult the Jews by requiring them to wear the tail of an animal on their head. The Yidden never take humiliation sitting down, turned this shameful decree into a beautiful and honorable headcovering.

There are also historians who maintain that the shtreimel was worn by Polish aristocracy back in the day. In old paintings featuring wealthy landowners of yore, one can spot their head coverings — and they look uncannily like shtreimels. Therefore, the Yidden wore these “elegant hats” too, only on Shabbos and Yom Tov to honor the day with expensive clothing.

There are more reasons based on the studies of chassidus regarding the source of the shtreimel. Old Lubavitch sources say that by wearing a shtreimel, one symbolizes the Yid’s ability to uplift the lowliest parts to great heights by using the tail of an impure animal and transforming it into a crown of glory.

Reb Tzadok Hakohen of Lublin, zt”l, writes in Pri Tzaddik that when the Yidden said na’aseh v’nishmah, the angels adorned them with two crowns, one for na’aseh – which symbolizes keeping the mitzvos — and one for nishmah – which symbolizes learning Torah. After the Chet Ha’egel, the crown of na’aseh was taken away, but the crown of nishmah remained. Reb Tzadok adds that the custom of wearing a totally different hat on Shabbos, especially one that surrounds the head like a crown, serves as a reminder of the crown of Torah the Yidden received.

Reb Pinchas’l Koritzer, zt”l, compared the shtreimel to tefillin. Shabbos, he says, is the abbreviation of shtreimel b’makom tefillin, the shtreimel in place of tefillin, because on Shabbos, one does not don his tefillin. That’s why the shpitzen on a shtreimel run from left to right — despite the fact that men usually wear our clothing from right to left — because tefillin is generally worn on the left hand. Because of this, there are some places where the custom is to wear the shtreimel during the Torah reading on Shabbos morning, because krias haTorah takes place during davening, and a shtreimel takes the place of the tefillin

Taking Shape

The shtreimel of the past looked completely different from the shtreimel we are used to seeing today. Most shtreimels that are manufactured these days are relatively tall, and the shpitzen (points) are connected to one another without each individual shpitz being visible.

Once upon a time, but not all that long ago, the shtreimel was much flatter than today’s shtreimels. It was fashioned in a way that you could see where each individual shpitz was attached to the center section (the kappel), and you could see exactly how many shpitzen the shtreimel was made of. There were those who required a specific number of shpitzen in their shtreimel — thirteen, for instance, which symbolizes the numerical value of the word echad.

Who Wears a Shtreimel?

Outside of Eretz Yisroel, a shtreimel is a Shabbos’dig article of clothing worn by married chassidim. In Eretz Yisroel, many Yerushalmi Yidden wear a shtreimel even before marriage, starting after their bar mitzvah. There are also other groups of chassidim who wear the shtreimel, including the Perushim, a faction of Yidden who are descendants of students of the Gra.

In other courts, various interesting minhagim were observed in regard to the shtreimel. The Rebbes of the Sighet dynasty wore their tallis on top of their shtreimel when they were honored with an aliyah to the Torah. In Belz, the Rav wears his tallis on top of his shtreimel both when he is oleh to the Torah, as well as when he is leading the davening.

Recently, a shtreimel Reb Chaim Kanievsky, zt”l, wore on Chol Hamoed was sold at auction for a large amount of money. He had inherited this shtreimel from his father, the Steipler Gaon, zt”l, who used to wear it every Shabbos.

Shtreimel Vision

In the court of the holy Sanzer Rav, zt”l, the guests who came for Shabbos used to line up near the path that led from the Rebbe’s house to the beis midrash. As the Rav passed on his way to Mincha on Erev Shabbos, they were greeted with a warm shalom aleichem. He then looked at their shtreimels and thus recognized each chassid

The Kedushas Zion’s Advice

A student of the Kedushas Zion of Bobov lived in a modern city where chassidus was non-existent, but he himself was drawn to chassidus When he got married, he wanted to wear a shtreimel, but his family protested because they were very embarrassed; no one in their city wore a shtreimel.

When he heard of his talmid’s dilemma, the Kedushas Zion advised the chasan to wear a shtreimel even during the week. The boy’s family grew even angrier; not only was the chasan denying their request, but he was even going to wear the shtreimel every day of the week!

Finally, they compromised: He would only wear it on Shabbos. The family was satisfied, and this talmid was thrilled at the way the matter was settled. He’d wear his shtreimel on Shabbos, and only on Shabbos!

had a brother, Reb Avigdor, who was the rav in the city of Duklah. Reb Avigdor was a passionate chassid of his brother, but since he was a rav in a city, he couldn’t leave his community to come to Sanz for the month of Tishrei. Therefore, along with a few other respected people of his town, he would come for one of the Shabbosos following Tishrei. When the Sanzer Rav would see his brother, he would greet him with honor and joy.

Once, when Reb Avigdor came to town for Shabbos, he stood in line near the path to greet his brother. However, the Sanzer Rav greeted him just like he did the others, without showing his brother any special recognition. Brokenhearted, and worried that his brother was sensing some kind of wrongdoing on his part, Reb Avigdor davened in a corner of the shul and then returned to his quarters feeling physically ill. In fact, he was feeling so poorly that he did not attend the tish

did not want to answer him, wondering why the Sanzer Rav was asking about his brother when he’d seen him on Friday. When he insisted that they answer him, they told him that he came for Shabbos but he took ill, and he did not have the strength to come to the beis midrash

When the Sanzer Rav heard this, he requested that they bring his brother to him, and the chassidim complied. When Reb Avigdor finally approached, the Sanzer Rav greeted his brother joyfully, with the honor he usually accorded him.

“Why didn’t you come greet me as you usually do?” asked the Rav.

Reb Avigdor explained that he got sick from aggravation because he did, in fact, come greet his brother, only the Rav did not greet him as he usually did.

The Sanzer Rav lifted his eyes, looked at his shtreimel and asked, “Whose shtreimel are you wearing?”

The Duklah Rav answered that he had forgotten to bring along his own shtreimel, so he’d borrowed a shtreimel from the owner of the guest house where he was staying.

“No wonder I did not recognize you the first time you passed,” his brother replied. “I didn’t recognize your shtreimel.”

The following is another tale that demonstrates the impression shtreimels made upon tzaddikim:

Reb Eliezer’l Dzikover’s chassidim used to come to him for Shavuos. Once, a chassid became ill and did not go to Dzikov for Yom Tov. This sick chassid had a neighbor who was a Sanzer chassid. This neighbor knew that the sick chassid was not going to Dzikov for Shavuos, so he asked if he could borrow his shtreimel and take it to Sanz, where he planned to spend Shavuos. The first chassid agreed, and his neighbor took his shtreimel to Sanz.

A while later, when this Dzikove chassid recovered, he went to his Rebbe in Dzikov.

“Why did you go to Sanz for Shavuos, and not to Dzikov as usual?” the Rebbe asked the chassid.

“Rebbe,” the chassid replied. “I was not in Sanz. I was ill, and I did not leave my house.”

“Yes,” replied the Rebbe, “but your shtreimel was in Sanz.”

Exploring the world of fur

Fur-trimmed jackets and parkas are everywhere these days, but is the fox or coyote fur on our hoods just there for design purposes, or does it really keep us warm?

Alaskan natives have trimmed their jackets with fur for hundreds of years. Fashion statements are the last thing on their minds when they are out ice fishing and hunting in subzero weather.

Surprisingly, several scientific studies have shown the fur trim (or ruffs) on hoods actually provide significant protection from the cold and wind. We know when you stand in front of a building, you won’t feel the force of the wind as much as when you stand out in an open field. In the same way, fur trim acts like a barrier keeping the wind away from your face.

Here in New York, we like our hoods to have a drawstring so we can bring the hood tightly around the face when it’s freezing. In Alaska, however, if the fur is next to the face, each time a person exhales, the moisture in their

breath freezes on the fur, which makes their face even colder and can lead to frostbite. For Alaskans, having a very large hood with a generous fur trim cre-

ates that necessary barrier for the wind.

Now that we have a greater appreciation for fur, let’s learn more about this wonderful material.

BIBER HITTEN AND AMERICA

A short history

Those living in large heimishe communities are all familiar with the sight of the ubiquitous “biber hit.” What some of you might not know is that the biber hit translates to “beaver hat.” Surprisingly, this hat played a major role in the development of the United States and Canada.

When English explorer Henry Hudson sailed into the New York Bay in 1609, he was looking for a waterway to the Orient. Instead, he found French traders bartering with Native American Indians for fur.

He never found the mythical water passage he was seeking, but he found something precious that he didn’t expect: beaver furs.

Europe at that time had a great thirst for furs, especially beaver furs, which were used to make felted beaver hats — the ancestors of the biber hitten worn today.

It was the beginning of a centuries-long relationship New York City has had with fur. In fact, once the beavers in New York (or New Amsterdam, as it was then called) were depleted, traders kept going farther west, trading with the Indians for furs as they progressed. This led to people settling farther and farther inland in the new country of America.

The same series of events occurred in Canada, with French explorers and traders doing the same. Moving farther inland, settlers traded with natives from Canadian Indian country, seeking otters, buffalo and the valuable beaver.

Traditionally, there were always Yidden in the fur trade, both in New York and in Europe. (Reb Yaakov Yosef Herman, zt’’l, of All for the Boss, was a furrier in New York in the early part of the 1900s.)

Up until today, there are Yidden in Australia, Vienna, London, New York, Canada and other parts of the world who are all part of the fur business, either as fur brokers, dealers or retailers.

EVERY LIVING THING

Mr. Moshe Pinchas Friedman shares a story that occurred back in the 1990s.

Right before Yom Kippur, Mr. Friedman of Friedman Furs got a call from an irate customer who owned an elegant fur store in Virginia. The customer was fuming.

“My daughter came home from Hebrew school this week,” he said, “and told us that her teacher taught the class some nonsense about not wearing leather shoes on Yom Kipper. I won’t let my daughter have her head filled with some anti-fur nonsense. Who ever heard of such a thing? I am not going to allow my kid to go to Hebrew school to learn nonsense. I told my daughter I was going to call you to set the record straight.”

Mr. Friedman assured the man that, indeed, it was forbidden to wear leather on Yom Kippur, but not because of any restrictions in regard to using animal hides, but because it is considered a luxury to wear leather shoes, a luxury that we are not permitted on the holiest day of the year. The man calmed down and agreed to continue his daughter’s Hebrew school sessions.

Mr. Friedman continues: “My father, a”h, who was in Florida at the time, was acquainted with Rabbi Pinchas A. Weberman, zt’’l, the Rav of the Ohev Sholom Shul nearby. He asked him to write a teshuvah about this issue. Rabbi Weberman was kind enough to take the time to address the associated problem of how to respond to anti-fur activists, and he wrote this letter to address the concept of animal rights according to halacha: A new group has raised a voice, protesting the use of animal skins for fur coats. Now the claim is that it violates the Torah’s injunction against cruelty to animals. It is true that the Torah prohibits unnecessary acts of cruelty to animals and makes people responsible to take action to relieve animal suffering. But this protest is not justified. The rule does not apply to the use of animals for human benefit.

Hunting: Yes or No?

The use of animals for pleasure is not a new concern. Hunting animals was considered the sport of aristocrats in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and the Noda B’Yehuda, zt”l, has a famous teshuvah about hunting animals for pleasure. His decision was that hunting was indeed permissible, in keeping with the allowance of using animals for any form of pleasure, but he felt that it was not a Jewish sport, and as such, one should refrain from hunting.

garments of rabbit skin (Bereishis 3:21). Rivka gives her son Yaakov goat skins to wear on his neck and hands (Bereishis 27:16 ). The Mishkan was covered with ram and tachash skins (Shemos 26:14).

The Torah allows the use of animals for food (Bereishis 9:3): Every moving thing that lives shall be food for you (Devorim 12:15). To your heart’s desire, you may slaughter and eat meat.

Included in our right of dominion over all living creatures is the human settling of wildernesses by clearing wooded areas and wetlands, even though such undertakings destroy the natural habitat of wildlife. When faced with an invasion of homes by rats, mice, roaches, termites and all sorts of vermin, people use traps, snares, deadly gases and poisonous substances to exterminate those living creatures. In our need for water, food, fuel and power, we divert these resources from the wildlife and deprive them of what was once available to them.

If these protesters would live in jungles, forests and wetlands side by side with rats, mice, roaches, spiders and snakes, if they would eat only vegetation not wanted by their neighboring wildlife, they may protest the wearing of fur coats.

But those who live in urban settings, who enjoy food, water, electric power and all of modern technology and who live in a vermin-free habitat, safe from wild predators, must realize that the great comfort they enjoy is theirs at the expense of the displacement and extermination of animals. Today’s fur industry does not use traps or any unnecessary painful procedures. They raise their animals in a farm setting and use humane, painless killing methods.

Those who partake of modern civilized life and demonstrate against the wearing of fur coats are hypocrites. Their protests should be ignored.

SABLE AND SECRETS

A true story of intrigue and mesiras nefesh by a family of furriers from Italy

This is a true story about the four Zippel brothers — Shlomo Yosef, Chaim, Avraham and Gershon (or Carlo, Henry, Fofo and Edi). They were Polish Jews who had lived in Italy, spent time before World War II in Germany, and then returned to Italy. They survived the war by escaping from Italy into Switzerland on foot before deportations started. After the war, they made their way back to Italy. They established a little shul in Milan called Ohel Yaakov and established their fur business in Milan as well.

The Zippel brothers’ fur business in Milan proved to be successful, and they applied for permission to attend the sable auctions in Leningrad (now called St. Petersburg) to buy sables for their store. Russian sables were a precious commodity, and the Russians guarded their sables with the highest level of security. No other country in the world had sables with the characteristics and colors of Russian sables.The secret of their breeding and

feeding was (and still is) kept under lock and key. Therefore, an invitation to a sable auction was only extended to a select group of furriers from around the world.

This was a process, as the Zippels had to fill out many forms and applications to prove that they had the necessary funds to pay for the furs purchased. Once they were approved, they began attending the auctions, and each time the brothers went, they made sure to take along kosher food and other items to give to Yiden in Leningrad.

When Reb Shlomo Yosef (Carlo, as he was called in Milan) took a trip to New York in the 1950s, he went to visit the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Reb Menachem Mendel Shneerson, zt”l. The Rebbe asked him to take home a suitcase filled with mezuzos, siddurim and tefillin that could then be delivered to the Russian Jews, who were deprived of every Jewish item, upon the Zippels next trip to Russia.

Thus began a long series of secret missions that Reb Avrohom (Fofo) Zippel undertook. He got a tutor to learn Russian, and he made an effort to attend every auction (which were held three times a year) in order to have as many opportuni-

ties as possible to smuggle in the precious mezuzos, siddurim, tefillin and other sorely needed items.

This was an undertaking that involved great danger. Smuggling in the various Jewish articles was the first step, and then came the job of delivering them to the right people. This was an enormous risk. In the days of Stalin and Kruschev, yimach shemom, there were spies everywhere. It was difficult to distinguish between spies and sincere Jews thirsting for a siddur

Reb Avrohom’s daughter, Mrs. Daniela Mevorach, was kind enough to speak to us from her house in Milan. She accompanied her father on one trip to the auction while she was still a teenager. She remembers how a Russian border patrol officer at the airport looked into her father’s suitcase, saw the many pairs of tefillin, and asked, “What is this? Why do you need so many?” He quickly answered, “These are for me; I use a different one every day.”

Mrs. Mevorach also describes how her father would book a large hotel suite so he could arrange for a bris to take place, providing the hotel suite as a “safe” location despite the security guards watching their every step.

Rabbi Levy Gorelick, son of Rabbi Gorelick, a”h, of Milan (who was the young rav sent to Milan in 1958), relates that in 1993, after the fall of the Iron Curtain, Rabbi Lazar, the Chief Rabbi of Moscow, was finally given permission to rebuild the Marina Roscha Shul in

Moscow. In the process, he found Tanya seforim hidden in the walls of the old shul. These were some of the seforim Reb Avrohom had bought along on his trips to Russia. The Russian Jews were afraid to take them home or to keep them lying around openly in the shul, so they would stash them in the walls for safekeeping.

These secret operations went on for years until Reb Avrohom once missed his connecting flight to Leningrad. His suitcases, however, were put on the

CARING FOR YOUR FUR

Fur is easy to wear and easy to take care of. You just have to remember one thing: Furs love cold and hate heat!

Any fur — whether it’s a full fur coat or just a collar — has to be protected from heat. This sounds so simple, but let’s take a look at the average home. When you put your shtreimel on the shelf or hang up your fur coat, keep in mind that the coat closet may very well have a steam or hot water pipe running right behind the wall. This heats up the closet and dries up your precious fur. Check your closet for warm walls in the winter, and if you feel any, find a cooler place to store your shtreimel or hang up your coat.

When attending a kiddush or another simcha, don’t throw your coat over your chair if you are sitting next to a radiator. You might not notice a difference immediately when you pick it up, but shortly after, you might notice that part of your coat

missed plane. When he finally arrived in Leningrad, he was immediately detained and put in jail. He was let out after a long day and night, but after that, the Lubavitcher Rebbe told him, “You can no longer go back.”

The Zippels, however, continued to support and encourage every facet of Jewish life in Milan, from schools to summer camps and more.

has shriveled up. (This can be repaired by replacing that part of the damaged fur, a great advantage to a fur coat as opposed to a cloth coat that cannot be repaired if it gets damaged.)

What about rain? We don’t suggest using your fur as a raincoat, but if it does get wet in a surprise shower, just let it dry naturally. Try to hang it over your shower rod, or somewhere else where it will not get crushed, until it is dry. Once it is dry, give it a vigorous shake to get the air back in and to get the hairs to fluff up.

Keep your fur or fur-trimmed coat cool in the summer. Don’t store it in the basement, as furs need to be kept in a cool, dry place with no moisture or humidity, which most basements tend to have (moisture can lead to moths, which is fatal to furs). Leaving your fur hanging in the closet in an air conditioned house is fine, but don’t leave it in your house if you are leaving for the summer and keeping the air conditioning turned off. Your brown coat won’t turn into a purple coat with yellow stripes if it is exposed to summer heat, but it will dry up faster, as the pelt has no oils with which to replenish itself. Once a coat dries up, the pelts cannot be repaired, and it will begin to get tears that cannot be repaired. You might want to look into storing your fur professionally. This means giving it in for the summer to a place that sends it to a temperaturecontrolled warehouse. There will be a fee, but it might be worth it if you want your coat to last for years.

And remember: All natural products need to breathe — they need air! This goes for silks and cottons as well. (Thank you, Mr. Weinstock of Stern’s Cleaners, for that tip.) If you want to cover your fur to prevent it from getting dirty or dusty, cover it with an old cotton bedsheet, leaving the bottom open to provide room for air to circulate.

With a little bit of the right kind of attention, your fur will give you years of warmth and comfort.

Mishloach Manos With a Fluff!

Everyone loves marshmallows. Soft, fluffy and sweet, they have long been a staple in campfire traditions and a great addition to hot cocoa. However, today we’ll redefine the way we experience marshmallows, transforming them with culinary creativity.

From s’mores chocolate domes and marshmallow caramel rings to marshmallow pops, the possibilities are endless, making for a great selection of sweets to prepare and package for mishloach manos this year.

Chocolate Domes

YOU WILL NEED:

A small 15-cavity semicircular silicone mold

Assorted chocolate (I used Supra dark chocolate — available at baking supply stores — as well as Ego dairy brown and white chocolate.)

Mini marshmallows, white and colorful

Chocolate and honey graham crackers cut into small pieces

Clear boxes measuring 45/8 x 15/8 x 1”

Twine Tags

DIRECTIONS:

Place 1 to 2 marshmallows and 1 to 2 pieces of graham crackers in each mold.

Fill the remaining space with melted chocolate.

HERE ARE THE COMBINATIONS THAT I DID, BUT YOU CAN CREATE YOUR OWN COMBINATIONS.

Dark chocolate | mini marshmallows | honey graham crackers

Brown milk chocolate | honey graham crackers | colorful marshmallows

White chocolate | chocolate graham crackers | mini marshmallows

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Do not microwave milk chocolate for more than 30 seconds at a time. As soon as the chocolate is mostly melted, remove from the microwave and mix well until the chocolate is completely melted. Putting milk chocolate in the microwave for too long will cause the chocolate to harden instead.

Make sure to melt and store all chocolate properly so that they do not change colors. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. If you plan on making a large batch of these for mishloach manos, I’d advise you to make and store a small batch for a few days to make sure the chocolate was melted and stored properly. Only once you’ve managed to do it right should you go ahead and make a large batch.

Marshmallow Pops

YOU WILL NEED:

Large marshmallows

2 lb. semi-sweet chocolate

Skewers

Colorful chocolate

Cellophane

Sprinkles

Ribbon

DIRECTIONS:

Melt the semi-sweet chocolate in a 2-pound container. (The container will make it easier to dip the entire skewer at once.)

Place three marshmallows on each skewer, and dip into the semi-sweet chocolate. Shake off excess chocolate. Place skewers on a parchment-lined tray.

For the sprinkle pops: Sprinkle on the sprinkles at this point, and allow to dry.

For the drizzled pops: Place each color chocolate in a freezer-size Ziploc bag, and melt. Drizzle chocolate over the pops, and allow to dry.

Place pops in cellophane and tie them with a bow.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Do not microwave colored chocolate for more than 30 seconds at a time. As soon as the chocolate is mostly melted, remove from the microwave and mix well until the chocolate is completely melted. Putting colored chocolate in the microwave too long will cause the chocolate to harden instead.

Marshmallow Caramel Rings

YOU WILL NEED:

Pretzels rings

Arcor caramels

Mini marshmallows

Melted chocolate

Small jars

Personalized labels (optional)

DIRECTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 350°.

Prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Spread pretzel rings on the baking sheet, and place a caramel inside each ring.

Place in the oven for 2 to 3 minutes until soft. If the caramel didn’t spread enough to fill the ring, flatten it slightly with a spoon.

Add a mini marshmallow on top of the caramel Rings

Drizzle with chocolate, and allow to dry before removing from the baking sheet.

It’s almost two years later now, and we’re not yet completely debt-free. But we’re getting closer, month by month. I know it feels like forever. But like everything in life, it’s a process, and real change doesn’t happen overnight.

There are days when living on a budget feels too hard, and I get discouraged. Some days, usually when there’s a lot going on, I just want to pull the blanket over my head and spend without thinking.

But the truth is that there is something even stronger than that “budgeting fatigue.” I don’t ever want to go back to those days where I turned a blind eye to our finances. Now I know that if I’m feeling constricted and overwhelmed around our expenses, it’s a sign we may need to make some changes in our budget. Life evolves, our needs change, and we often have to adjust our budget to make it work. The only way to avoid falling into the

spending trap is to achieve a balance where we’re content and comfortable, and can manage our payments toward the debt.

In those first eighteen months, we bought strictly basics and necessities, and getting through each month was another victory. At this point, baruch Hashem, our income has grown, and we are able to allow ourselves some extras here and there.

From the very beginning, this journey has been full of many unbelievable moments of chesed Hashem There were seemingly small stories, like the time the credit card company was willing to settle for a quarter of the amount we owed them, the unexpected Yom Tov bonus, and the freelance jobs that came our way. Whenever I’m feeling down about our finances, I can fall back on those experiences and remind myself of how everything always works out for our best.

I remember when my husband called me one Friday morning and told me we had gotten a $2,800 refund check from Honda. Huh? It was totally unexpected, but I wasn’t really so shocked. I had gotten used to seeing Hashem’s guiding hand.

The whole car lease saga had been weighing on us for a while. Our lease was set to expire six months into our budgeting journey, and a new lease just seemed unaffordable at that point. Cars were still very expensive postCovid, and a new lease would cost us more than double what we had been paying monthly until then. We simply didn’t have the money; adding a few hundred dollars a month to our car payment would throw us into the red again. We tried extending the lease, but the request was denied. Eventually, the day came that we needed to return the car. We didn’t have another one yet, and we couldn’t possibly manage without one. That morning my husband tried his luck again and called Honda to request an extension, and this time we got it. Thank you, Hashem!

It didn’t solve our problem, but it definitely bought us time. We ended up keeping the car for a bit longer than the requested extension, and in that time my husband continued to send in the car payments due. In those extra months, he found someone who wanted to buy the car directly from Honda and then sell it for a profit. That helped us finance a used car with manageable monthly payments. (We also used these extra few months to work on our credit so financing the car would be possible.) And that’s when we got the $2,800 refund check. It was so unexpected, we checked the envelope to see if it was legit. We were sure it was a scam. But it was totally real; there was a letter attached, explaining that they were sending us a refund for the extra payments my husband made, which they claimed were unnecessary since we bought off the car.

Another story comes to mind here. A year after my son’s bar mitzvah, we got a $3,000 check from a close relative. He insisted that he had been planning to pay for the tefillin as his bar mitzvah gift, and just hadn’t gotten around to sending us the check until then. We were speechless; $3,000 is a lot of money. By then, the bar mitzvah and all associated costs had been fully paid up, but when we got a tax bill of $3,100 that week, we knew Hashem had our back. And if we just keep our eyes open, we can see that He’s with us every step of the way.

Fur hats are no new fad. As early as 14th century Europe, men proudly sported hats made of beaver fur. Until new methods of fur processing invited cost-effective solutions using cheaper furs, local beavers were hunted to the point of near extinction. This was not due exclusively to secular fashions; original versions of the chassidish “biber hat” were made of short-haired beaver fur, too.

BEHOLD THE BEAVER

Beavers have a thick, hairy coat, which keeps them warm in the winter and helps them stay afloat in water. Beneath the outer layer is a waterproof undercoat — quite a necessity, given their proclivity for a water-based habitat. Short and stocky, beavers have webbed toes and flat, hairless tails.

They’ve got poor eyesight, an excellent sense of smell, and impeccable hearing.

Beavers are blessed with a third eyelid. It’s transparent, so they can see while swimming underwater, and have their eyes protected, too.

TEETH WHITENING, ANYONE?

With rust-colored teeth that never stop growing, beavers have quite unusual dental qualities.

Hashem designed their teeth to be strong, so they can chomp through the toughest of plant life without breaking. Beaver teeth get their orange color from an iron-rich enamel coating.

As beavers chew, their teeth wear down, getting chiseled into uneven shapes. That actually makes it easier for them to gnaw through hard things, like wood. No worries, they don’t grind down their teeth completely, as the teeth keep growing every single day.

And since their lips can close behind their front teeth, beavers can chew while underwater.

BUSY AS A BEAVER

Beavers are among the most industrious of animals, working incessantly to change their habitat. They build and maintain dams, lodges and canals.

DAMS: Nothing dams beavers’ determination. They move rocks and gnaw at trees and shrubs to create dams. This gives them deeper water to forage in and protect themselves from predators and the elements. They even set themselves up with a kitchen-style pantry where they can store their food.

LODGES: Beavers are sophisticated contractors, building complex homes for themselves. Using sticks and mud, they form islands in the middle of the water or along the banks, complete with separate living and eating chambers. There are often multiple entrances to these dome-like structures, which can be entered from the water only.

CANALS: Work, work, work. It’s constant! When one home is built, beavers get to work on the next one, establishing homes for entire communities. They even create transport canals so they can haul their building materials between sites and link multiple dam locations.

THE PLIGHT OF THE BEAVER

Can humans get along with beavers in their midst?

To tell the truth, people often dislike beavers. They impact our landscape and waterscape as they burrow their way through.

At times, their dam-building and tree-cutting cause flooding and safety problems. Interestingly, however, their work sometimes has the opposite effect, mitigating flooding as they help control water flow.

And while there were times when beavers were nearly extinct, thanks to the fur trade, today beavers are making a comeback. There are loads of them around, and they are not considered an endangered species.
