MINDONEER ’ S INNOVATIVE NUERO - NINE ™ THEORY THAT IS REVOLUTIONIZING LIVES
Shaya just couldn’t get it together. Starting in the morning with single shoes and missing homework, culminating in the frantic scramble to catch the bus, Shaya’s challenges continued throughout the school day. Crumpled papers, wandering attention during lessons, and an awkwardness during recess were all part of his routine. Shaya's mother invested in Mishnayos tutors, social skills mentors, coaches for executive function – the list went on. It was overwhelming, not to mention the financial strain. But watching her child struggle hurt even more.

It was a year of intense effort, but guided expertly by Mrs. Chayala Taub every step of the way, they saw clear progress. The change was incredibly motivating. Fast forward two years, and Shaya is a transformed child. Not only is he put together, focused, and learning well, he's even made a few friends.
the same students who were leaving the classroom in 7th and 8th grade. They seemed so stuck, and my heart went out to them. I discovered Neurolinks and opened a branch to serve the Lakewood community where I was privileged to help so many children overcome their struggles. Recently I created Mindoneers, a unique program for children and adults, developed through my years of experience and the successes that I’ve seen.
Please provide a glimpse into the Mindoneers program?
Imagine all the skills required for a child to navigate a typical day successfully – the ability to block out distractions, follow along with the lesson, respond appropriately to social cues and more. Rather than addressing each issue in isolation, our team of professionals explore the underlying causes of the struggles and focus on the “NeuroNine” fundamental skills. As the child masters each core skill, they will learn to build upon it to achieve progress across all areas.
What is your innovative “NeuroNine”
At Mindoneers we believe that every external issue has an underlying internal source. We target nine core elements, termed the “NeuroNine”, that are necessary for every individual to be fully functioning and successful. I assess every child’s proficiency in each area and then address each one. My goal is to ensure that every skill is mastered to 100%, as even a minor deficiency can significantly impact a struggling child.
MINDONEER’ S INNOVATIVE NUERO- NINE™ THEORY THAT IS REVOLUTIONIZING LIVES
Our approach is inherently motivational. Children experience a surge in self-confidence as they witness their own progress. This, combined with a nurturing environment where they feel understood, further bolsters their motivation.

Who is Mindoneers geared for?
The fact is that approximately one-fifth of all children face functional challenges - whether on an academic, social, or behavioral level. Each of these children can be taught to not just survive but actually thrive in our everyday world via the Mindoneers core-based approach. Our program spans 25-35 weeks, with an in-person 45 minute session once a week. The rest of the time is dedicated to a structured homework program.

Sure, I have hundreds! One small incident that comes to mind: Recently a high school teacher reached out regarding servicing her own child. When I asked her how she had heard of Mindoneers she shared that she had taught a student who was simply a star in every area. When she gave an effusive nachas report to the girl’s mother, the mother was touched by how far her daughter had come. She disclosed that her daughter had actually been very challenged when she was younger, but with Mrs. Taub’s help she had completely transformed. Now, this teacher who saw firsthand the results of the program wanted to access its unique capacities for her own child.

I REMEMBER
(Re: As Far as Fur Goes, Issue 225)
It was nice to be taken back to the sixties in this article. I still remember when a young teenager joined our Yeshiva Bais Moshe of Scranton high school class, coming from faraway Italy. Yaakov Zippel (I’m not sure which of the brothers was his father) brought a certain flavor and character to the chevra to which he was welcomed.
He was a model of mentchlichkeit, middos and mesiras nefesh, traveling so far from family to learn and grow. I recall him telling fascinating stories of his father’s dedication to Yiddishkeit, including placing himself in very real danger, and his relationship with and devotion to the Lubavitcher Rebbe.
If I’m not mistaken, he once told me his father had a hakpadah to try to buy something new every Erev Shabbos, l’kavod Shabbos. This mesorah was clearly transmitted to his children, and we were zoche to see it during our time together in yeshiva.

MAGAZINE READER SYNDROME
(Re: Tough to Swallow, Issue 224)
I’m the type of person who reads about a disease or condition and is immediately convinced that I have it. (It’s a real thing — there’s actually something called Medical Student Syndrome where med students think they have whatever disease they happen to be studying. I guess I have Magazine Reader Syndrome.) It happens to be that I had been having trouble swallowing lately. When I would swallow, I sometimes felt like the food was not going down and getting stuck in my throat. I was basically ignoring it, but when I read the story about the woman with achalasia, I was sure that was exactly what was wrong with me, and I made an appointment at the doctor. The doctor told me that

achalasia was very rare and it was probably just reflux. But that didn’t make me feel any better, because that was what the doctor in the article had said too! And, like the person in the story, I know what reflux feels like, and this was not it.
Baruch Hashem, my doctor was patient and explained to me that a person can have “silent reflux,” meaning they don’t feel the burning acid in their throat. But reflux over an extended period of time can cause the throat to swell, which was why I was having trouble swallowing. He gave me a prescription, which I combined with some natural remedies. Baruch Hashem, the problem has since resolved.

CHAIN REACTION
(Re: The Allergic Reaction, Issue 206)
A few months ago, you had an entire issue dedicated to allergies. One article featured an interview with two mothers of highly allergic children, and seeing the world through their eyes was very enlightening.
What I read actually left an impression. Just last week, I was hurrying out to a doctor’s appointment, and with no time to eat breakfast, I grabbed some rice cakes, slapped some peanut butter on top, put it all into a sandwich bag, and ran out the door. At the doctor’s office, I threw the bag smeared with peanut butter into the trash can — but then I remembered those who can go into anaphylactic shock just by inhal-
ing the allergen, and I put the bag into my pocket instead.
(In all honesty, I shouldn’t have taken peanut butter to the doctor’s office in the first place, but that only occurred to me later).
Thank you so much for your enlightening content, and may we all stay healthy and well!

STAYING ORGANIZED
(Re: Home Base, Issue 204)
I know your organizing series ran a while ago, but I had to write now to let you know what a difference it made in my home — and especially in my Pesach cleaning! I live in a small house with a large family, baruch Hashem, and Pesach cleaning has always been a challenge. Some years, I couldn’t even clean the toy closet properly because it was just so jammed full and (I understand now) disorganized. I used to tape it shut and sell it over Pesach. But I followed your organizing serial and got my house under control, and Pesach cleaning is going so smoothly this year. Part of the reason is because I threw out everything we didn’t really need, as the organizer advised, and also because everything is now in bins and containers. I just take out the container, check it for chametz, wipe it out, wipe the shelf, and put it back.
Thank you so much to The Boro Park View and Sara Meyer for transforming this enormous job for me. I’m much less overwhelmed than I used to be.

ETIQUETTE ON WHEELS
I was almost knocked off my feet this week by a speeding bicyclist on a busy sidewalk. Let’s guide our children in the ways of derech eretz and darkei no’am. Please, please teach your children to respect pedestrians by following these guidelines:
• Ride on the edges of the sidewalk if you must, not in the center where pedestrians walk.
• When approaching a pedestrian from behind, honk or beep to alert the pedestrian.
• Call out “to your right” or “to your left” (tzum rechts or tzum links) as many adult bikers do on bike paths to let pedestrians know on which side they will be passed.

PURIM
To Give and To Get
Y. Levenstein
Purim is a day of giving. Both matanos l’evyonim and mishloach manos, two of the four mitzvos hayom, are specifically designed around giving to one another. Why is this theme so prominent on Purim, more than any other time?
AHARON* IS A YOUNG FATHER of five. One day in Adar four years ago, he suffered sudden heart failure and was rushed to the hospital. Comprehensive testing determined that immediate surgery was necessary, and Aharon was wheeled to the operating room and prepped for surgery.
After several hours, the doctors reported to the family that the operation had been completed successfully. The anesthesia was due to wear off after several hours, but things didn’t go as planned. One tense hour followed the next, and the patient remained deeply asleep. The doctors said he would definitely wake up within 48 hours, but that time came and went, and Aharon did not regain consciousness.
The family sat in the waiting area, davening and waiting for news with mounting desperation. Soon Aharon’s name was spread within the community. Hundreds of tefillos were recited on his behalf, and many took on kabbalos in the zechus of his speedy recovery.
One family member gave Aharon’s name to one of the gedolei hador for a bracha. “Give tzedakah in his zechus,” the gadol advised. “Give it to a life-saving organization that provides basic necessities for families in need.”
The man didn’t waste a moment and reached out to a local organization that feeds needy families. He committed to a sizable donation that was a stretch for him as it was beyond his means. Then he took out his Tehillim and continued to daven. By then the doctors were already talking about creating a long-term care plan for the comatose Aharon.
Suddenly, Aharon opened his eyes and tried to sit up. The hospital staff came running to his side. It became the talk
of the ward: Aharon, the patient who only moments before seemed to be in a slumber from which he would never awaken, had unexpectedly come back to life!
Only several days later, Aharon walked out of the hospital on his own two feet. He was filled with gratitude to Hakadosh Baruch Hu and to all those who davened for his recovery. He also heard about the kabbalos and acts of chesed and tzedakah done on his behalf, especially the generous contribution this relative had made.
A short while later, Aharon celebrated the bar mitzvah of his son. Overcome with emotion and appreciation, he invited his surgeon to attend.
At the seudah, the surgeon stood up to speak. With tears streaming down his face, the surgeon said, “In truth, I never dreamed that Aharon would survive. The surgery was very complicated and risky, and when he didn’t awaken from the anesthesia, I knew that he might either die or remain alive, but he certainly wouldn’t recover and go back to what he was before. And here, before my eyes, I see a miracle. He’s alive! He can walk and he can talk! It’s hard to believe.”
A few weeks after Shimon* and his family moved into their new home, a fundraiser from an organization that Shimon contributed to regularly came for a personal visit.
“Now that your dining room has doubled in size, how about you double your monthly donation?” the fundraiser suggested.
The family sat in the waiting area, davening and waiting for news with mounting desperation

The attache case in his hand went flying across the road, and his suit was destroyed from the impact. Yet Shimon himself was unharmed
Shimon appreciated the work of this organization, which supported needy families with basic necessities, and he decided to go for it. He would give twice as much as he had in the past.
The next morning, as Shimon was crossing the street, he was struck by a garbage truck. The attache case in his hand went flying across the road, and his suit was destroyed from the impact. Yet Shimon himself was unharmed. He picked himself up from the ground, dusted himself off, and went home.
The only signs of his brush with death was his torn suit and a broken toe.

The fourteenth of Adar was the date Haman chose for the annihilation of the Yidden. This decree came as retribution for the Yidden attending the seudah of Achashverosh. In a miraculous twist of events, Klal Yisroel was saved and Haman had his downfall.
Chazal established this day as a day of miracles, beyond nature, for generations. These mitzvos of mishloach manos and matanos l’evyonim were instituted as a means to continue to bring yeshuos, above and beyond the laws of nature. By giving to the needy, we can be zoche to nissim and yeshuos — l’maaleh m’derech hateva, as Chazal say, “Tzedakah tatzil m’maves.”

From Worst to First, Newly Renovated LaGuardia Shines
Like a caterpillar breaking out of its cocoon as a shimmering butterfly, LaGuardia Airport has emerged from extensive renovations with a completely new identity, one that has it tying for first place as North America’s best midsize airport.
The Airports Council International gave LaGuardia top marks in its annual Airport Service Quality survey as the best airport serving 25 to 40 million passengers per year, a rank it shares with Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport. Aside from Maine’s small Portland International Jetport, LaGuardia was the only airport in the northeast to be recognized in the survey’s six categories, which are based on passenger usage.
LaGuardia had long been plagued by flight delays, lost luggage and substandard customer service. The New York Post reported that LaGuardia had been lampooned in many jokes, with President Joe Biden using it to illustrate the dire need for
infrastructure improvements in the United States.
“If I blindfolded someone and took him at 2 o’clock in the morning into the airport in Hong Kong and said, ‘Where do you think you are?’ he’d say, ‘This must be America. It’s a modern airport,’” said Biden in a 2014 speech. “If I took you and blindfolded you and took you to LaGuardia Airport in New York, you’d think, ‘I must be in some third-world country.”
But things have changed since the airport underwent a massive $8 billion multi-year renovation. While LaGuardia still has limited access to mass transit and some complaints have arisen, the airport’s changes go far beyond the cosmetic, with former governor Andrew Cuomo describing its rebuilding as a daring and ambitious government project. Port Authority executive director Rick Cotton noted that LaGuardia had been universally regarded as the worst airport in the nation.
“It was the airport everyone loved to hate, but no longer,” said Cotton. “LaGuardia’s days as a punchline for late night jokes is finally over.”
Fire Breaks Out at Williamsburg Matzah Bakery
Things were even hotter than usual at the Satmar Matzah Bakery in Williamsburg on March 17 when a fire broke out shortly after noon, just five weeks before Pesach.
The New York City Fire Department was called to the Congregation Yetav Lev Satmar Matzah Bakery, located at 427 Broadway, near Hooper Street. Firefighters had to rip up walls and ceilings in their search for pockets of fire, and while the fire was contained, the bakery sustained damages that will affect its operations during this peak season.
The cause of the fire remained

unknown as of this writing. It remains unclear what effect the fire will have on matzah supply and prices, with the bakery typically producing matzah for thousands of families. Unfortunately, one firefighter was injured in the blaze.
Lawmakers Ask State To Double Security Funding for Religious Schools
With New York’s already high rate of hate crimes climbing even higher in the wake of the October 7 attack, state lawmakers are pushing for double security funding for religious schools.
Currently, New York allocates $45 million to protect students against hate crimes, but rising threats have made clear the need for additional funding. Senate Deputy Majority Leader Michael Gianaris said that Albany needs to do more to keep students safe in school, reported the New York Post. Legislation calling for $90 million in funding is expected to be included in the state’s latest spending plan, which would still have to win Governor Kathy Hochul’s approval.
Teach NYS, part of the larger Teach Coalition that advocates for fair government funding for Jewish schools, has been lobbying for the legislation together with other members of the private community, which includes religious schools of multiple faiths. Teach NYS sent 17,000 letters, many of which were written by students, to Hochul and lawmakers, explaining the urgent need for additional safety measures, which could include installing surveillance cameras and hiring security guards.
“Parents of all faiths have come together,” said Maury Litwack, executive director of the Teach Coalition. “It is something that New Yorkers should be proud of.”
With anti-Jewish incidents in New York rising 214% in October, one Manhattan Upper East Side yeshiva has insisted that its boys wear baseball caps over their yarmulkes when they go to Central Park for recess. Numerous incidents of people being attacked on their way to or from shul have been reported to the NYPD, as have anti-Semitic property attacks.
Members of other religious groups have been targeted as well, with one Islamic school reporting that a female student had her hijab ripped off her head.
Early Voting for Presidential Primary Starts in NYC
Both President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump have already clinched their spots on the presidential ballot for their respective parties, but early voting starts this weekend for New Yorkers who want to cast their ballots in the April 2 primary election.
Early voting runs from March 23 to March 30 in New York City.
Polling places are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on March 23, 24, 25 and 30; from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on March 26 and 29; and from 10
a.m. to 8 p.m. on March 27 and 28. Early voting in Boro Park is being held at FDR High School, 5800 20th Avenue, and at Boro Park Center Rehab, 4915 10th Avenue.
Proposed NY Law Allows Absentee Balloting for Religious Reasons
A Brooklyn lawmaker has introduced legislation in Albany that would allow New Yorkers to vote by absentee ballot when religious observance precludes them from casting their votes in person.
State Senator Iwen Chu was contacted last year by a Jewish resident of Bensonhurst who explained that she and her neighbors had been unable to vote because their polling place was a non-Jewish house of worship, which they are forbidden to enter under Jewish law. Current election law does not allow objections to polling places for religious reasons, and while absentee ballots are permitted by law in New York, they can only be submitted until the last day of early voting, which is typically several days before the general election.
Chu introduced a bill in the Senate on March 12 that would allow absentee voting where religious conflicts exist. With the district that she represents, New York’s 17th, having one of the lowest voter turnouts in the state, Chu hopes to remove at least some of the impediments that keep people from voting.
“One of our most important civic responsibilities is voting in every election and having our voices heard. I truly believe it is our strongest tool as U.S citizens, and I take this seriously,” said Chu in a statement. “New Yorkers with the ability to partake in democracy should be able to exercise their right to vote without any obstacles.”
Rabbi Yeruchim Silber, director of New York government relations at Agudath Israel of America, praised Chu for her efforts, noting that being able to vote is one of the most fundamental rights of United States citizenry.
“It would be unconscionable to have that right curtailed due to a person’s religious observance or practice,” said Rabbi Silber, adding, “Religious observance or practice should never be an obstacle for exercising one’s right to vote.”

CHAPTER 3
Recap: Yoel is arrested. Russy is a basket case.
He counted a stainless steel toilet bowl and a bench.
And himself.
Which brought the total number of items in the holding cell up to three.
It was almost a relief to finally be in this locked cubicle — though he didn’t feel much of anything at all. A strange stupor took hold of Yoel as he looked around. In this strange state of not feeling, he idly noted that jail and fail rhymed.
For a man who’d barely slept the night before and stood for hours on a cold stone floor in his slippers, it was an impressive idea.
There was a low wall chiseled out of concrete. The guard had called it a bed.
Yoel had looked at it defiantly and not dared sit down until the door had clicked shut — like, well, a prison cell.
Now, he finally — almost luxuriously — sat down on the hard bench, leaned against the wall, removed his slippers and wriggled his wrists — still sore from the handcuffs.
The handcuffs had been awful. His nose had started itching the moment the officer brushed past him in his house, and it had consumed his thoughts all the way to the courthouse.
But the fingerprinting and endless questions were way worse. They had treated him like a common criminal, like a drunk, like a junkie — all while he had a squeaky clean record.
He thought he’d been through with the worst, but then they’d taken his mugshot.
He’d smiled automatically to the camera, only to have the officer sardonically remark, “You seem to be happy here.” That had wiped his smile
off and gotten him to scowl. The officer smirked and said, “That’s better.”
Yoel shifted on the hard concrete. He would stand up if his feet would only hold him.
Where was the lawyer already? He couldn’t wait for Barry to show up. On the other hand, he dreaded Barry’s appearance. The district courthouse was not large enough to hide from Barry’s “I told you so.”
As hard as it was for him to admit it, he knew he’d been warned. By Barry, no less.
He’d been a rookie once.
That was the only reason the first building he bought back in the 80s was under his own name. He’d been so enamored with the thought of having an entire building under the name of Joel Brandwein that he disregarded all advice on LLCs, trust funds and cor-

To him, that first purchase felt like owning a high-rise on Fifth Avenue. It hardly mattered to him that it was located on St. Nicholas Avenue in the slums of Central Harlem. He, Yoel, the son of the milk delivery guy, had real estate in Manhattan. Practically an investment mogul.
And whenever Barry Gold Esq., his lawyer at Brandwein Holdings, LLC, pestered him about the need to transfer it to the company name, Yoel always assured him that he was just a step away from selling and that Barry shouldn’t bother with the paperwork.
And he really had
been warned not to; there was no guarantee that he’d make it out alive. He’d hired the best property management firm in the area, without even allowing his own employees to enter. So how could he be to blame?
After his state of apathy, this feeling of anger was an improvement. The room was too small to let the anger out. He rested his head in his hands and leaned on his legs.
He thought of Russy in a detached sort of way. He’d told Barry on the phone to be in contact with her regarding any documents he needed. He’d also warned Barry to repeat his warning to Russy not to tell a soul.
Yoel had no way of telling time without his phone or watch. The minutes and hours morphed into one. Or was it days and months and years?
planned on selling the dump.
It was always at the last minute that the rush of excitement came back. The memories of that first set of keys always made him hold on to that building in New York’s most crime-ridden neighborhood.
So the building still bore his name. The illegal activities happening in the moldinfested apartments and rat-infested basement was somehow linked to the early morning FBI visit. According to the agents, the building served as the headquarters for one of the infamous street gangs of Harlem.
But he’d never even set foot into that building! He’d
He had no way of telling time without his phone or watch. The minutes and hours morphed into one. Or was it days and months and years?
Finally, after the span of several lifetimes, the sound of a door opening jolted him awake.
His neck ached, and he winced as his back protested against every move. He looked up at Barry and the guard standing in the room doorway.
Yoel didn’t say a word as Barry took in the scene.
His lawyer was an expert at concealing his emotions, so when his eyes widened, Yoel knew he didn’t look his best.

This turned out to be to Yoel’s benefit. One look at his client’s robe and slippers, and Barry clamped his mouth shut and did what he had to do to get him home.
But his I told you so screamed with every movement.

The unmistakable blend of cheap scent and smoke were so distinct, Russy didn’t need Kristina to announce her presence.
“Hi, Mrs. Russy,” Kristina sang in her Italian lilt. She entered the living room where Russy lay huddled in a morning robe, completely immobile.
“How are you?” Kristina continued. She shifted the pile of garment bags to her other hand.
Not today. Just not.
the mess to Kristina.
“I forgot you’re coming today,” Russy said. “We had a big party last night, and I must’ve messed up my stomach.”
“Oh! My fault. I was actually supposed to come tomorrow, but I did something so beautiful on that bar mitzvah dress, I couldn’t wait.” She leaned forward and modulated her voice. “Even for the Grosses I didn’t do
Kristina put her arm around Russy, her red nails digging into Russy’s arm.
After a moment, Russy bit into the banana.
“Okay, let’s look at the dress.”
“Are you sure?” Kristina asked. She was. For the next two hours, the plaques littering the couch faded away, and the living room mess disappeared. The only thing that existed was beadings and fabrics, midriffs and buttons.
Kristina quietly walked into the kitchen again and brought Russy a banana from the fruit bowl. Russy took it quickly, tears filling her eyes
Russy wrapped the belt tighter around her waist. “Kristina, maybe you can come back tomorrow?” Usually, she loved the motherly seamstress enough to put up with her awful smoking habits and lack of timeliness. But not today.
Kristina stopped rotating her aching shoulder and finally looked at Russy. “Mrs. Russy, are you feeling well?”
Russy shook her head.
Kristina dropped her armload of garment bags onto a chair and came closer. Russy gagged as the smell of smoke made her empty stomach grumble.
“Can I get you a cup of water?” Kristina asked.
Russy nodded gratefully. Barry had been there for an hour without realizing how awful she was feeling, but a woman picked up on her thirst in 30 seconds. Kristina made her way to the kitchen and fished for a cup and some tap water.
Tap water was awful.
“Can you bring me another cup, please?” Russy asked. After that second cup, her head finally cleared a bit.
Damage control, Russy. Think. Explain
such exquisite beading.”
Russy relaxed. Kristina had that magic spell over her. She longed to feel the silk and beading of the bar mitzvah dress.
Kristina moved some documents and papers to the side and started unzipping the first garment bag.
“So what kind of party did you have last night?” She had that Kristina glint that she always got when she chanced upon juicy gossip.
“It was the last night of Hanukkah, and all the kids came.”
“Aha. Wow, they really left a mess here,” she said mildly.
“Kristina, before we look at the dress, I have to eat something.” She stood up shakily. A wave of dizziness washed over her. She sat down again.
Kristina quietly walked into the kitchen again and brought Russy a banana from the fruit bowl. Russy took it quickly, tears filling her eyes.
Kristina abandoned the zipper and sat down next to Russy.
“Mrs. Russy, what happened?”
“Nothing. Nothing. Really, nothing happened. Just…”
“Just, what?”
“Nothing. Some misunderstanding.”
TO BE CONTINUED…
While they were at it, Russy realized she needed something new for Pesach, too. So they chose a style and color.
“Make something pretty for Chavi, too,” Russy said. “She should also have something new for Pesach. She’ll use it for the bar mitzvah, too.”
Kristina nodded. “Yup. She’s my next stop.”
Chaim’s bar mitzvah, Yosef Yehuda’s eldest, wasn’t until after Pesach, but it was never too early to start on the dresses.
Kristina was busy measuring her neckline, when once again, the door opened. It could only be Yoel; who else would let themselves in without ringing the doorbell?
Russy froze, then adrenaline and fear kicked in.
“Kristina, leave!” she said urgently. She started throwing pins and beads into their cases and almost pushed her out the door. “Take the basement exit. I’ll buzz you out.”
“I have to take this with me,” Kristina said, picking up all the garment bags. She looked at Russy as one looked at a crazed woman.
Russy didn’t care. That woman had to leave now.
“Leave everything here. You’ll pick it up after you’re done with Chavi.”
She practically pushed her down the stairs, but it was a moment too late. She watched Kristina look backward in time to see Yoel coming down the hallway, still clad in his slippers, with Barry at his side.
“Kristina?” she whispered. “Don’t tell Chavi a thing about… Well, don’t tell Chavi a thing.”

BUILDING A FISH BOARD
BOARD
I try not to use wooden boards for fish or meat since the bacteria can never be fully washed out. If you do want to use a wooden board, I suggest placing a piece of parchment paper underneath the fish to keep the board clean.
GARNISHES
Garnishes of choice are truly a matter of opinion, but here are some ideas to spark your imagination.
FRUITS
Pomegranate
Mango one of my favorites
Gooseberries for that elegant touch
Citrus fruits work great with fish since they absorb the smell, leaving you with just the good parts
ADDITIONS
Egg kichel traditional and delicious
Tam-Tam crackers
Snackers
Spicy mayo
Sweet sauce
Wasabi mayo
Soy sauce
Sweet chili sauce
Dijon dill sauce (recipe following)
VEGGIES
Capers
Jalapeño
Red chili pepper
Tricolor peppers
Tricolor olives
Radishes for a great pop of color
Purple onion sprinkled with salt if you prepare these in advance
Avocado with some lemon so it doesn’t brown
Beets
julienned, spiraled
Carrots julienned, spiraled
Herbs to complete the board!
When it comes to preparing fish, freshness is key. That’s why I always turn to Fish to Dish for their freshest, cleanest and most beautiful selection.
I recently had a chat with Mr. Langsam, the owner of Fish to Dish, and he provided me with some tips on keeping fish as fresh as it could be.
Cured salmon can stay fresh for up to four to five days, and sweet-and-sour salmon can last for about one and a half weeks if stored in the coldest part of the fridge (with the temperature at or below 40°). The back of the fridge is its coldest spot, making it the perfect place to keep your salmon nice and fresh.
When storing fish, divide it in individual containers based on the amount you will be using per meal so that the ones you plan to use later are protected from exposure to warmer air. This simple step helps maintain the quality and taste of your fish.

BASIC CURED SALMON
This dish offers the perfect balance of rich flavor and delicate texture. Though it may seem time-consuming to prepare, the instructions are surprisingly simple!
INGREDIENTS
3.5 lb. side of salmon
1¼ cup salt
1¼ cup sugar
1 T. black pepper
1 tsp. lemon zest
DIRECTIONS
1. Combine and mix the salt, sugar, black pepper and lemon zest.
2. Line a baking pan with Saran wrap, and spread half of the mixture onto it. Place the salmon on top of it, and pour the remaining mixture over the salmon.
3. Cover tightly with Saran wrap, ensuring everything is covered.
4. Refrigerate with weights on top of the salmon (I like to use cans).
5. After 12 hours, clean the pan (a lot of liquid will have been released at that point) and turn over the salmon.
6. Refrigerate again, placing weights on top of the fish. Refrigerate for another 12 to 24 hours so it cures for a total of 24 to 36 hours.
7. After that, cut open the Saran wrap, and under cold running water, wash off the entire mixture.
8. Pat salmon dry, and freeze for 45 minutes. (This will make it easier to slice.)
9. Slice thinly on an angle so it comes off easily from the skin.
Optional: After the salmon has been cured and cleaned, heat a pan with a tablespoon of oil, and sear the salmon for 30 seconds on each side.
DILL DIJON SAUCE
The sauce that brings it all together.
INGREDIENTS
3 T. Dijon mustard
1 T. maple syrup
1 T. red wine vinegar
3 T. extra-virgin olive oil
2 T. chopped fresh dill
DIRECTIONS
1. Combine mustard, maple syrup and vinegar in a small bowl. Whisk in oil and stir in dill.
2. Refrigerate until ready to use.

DILL AND PEPPER CURED SALMON
The combo of dill and pepper brings the standard cured salmon up a notch. If you’re a true dill or pepper fan, feel free to add some more of either one. As long as the salt and sugar ratio is correct, feel free to play around with the other spices.
INGREDIENTS
3.5 lb. side of salmon
2 T. dried dill
2 T. coarsely chopped black pepper
½ cup sugar
⅔ cup salt
1 tsp. lemon zest
DIRECTIONS
1. Rub the dill and black pepper onto the top side of the fish.
2. Combine the sugar, salt and lemon zest in a small bowl. Mix well.
3. Line a baking pan with Saran wrap, and spread half of the mixture onto it. Place the dill salmon on top of it, and pour the remaining mixture over the salmon.
4. Cover tightly with Saran wrap, ensuring everything is covered.
5. Refrigerate with weights on top of the salmon (I like to use cans).
6. After 12 hours, clean the pan (a lot of liquid will have been released at that point) and turn over the salmon.
7. Refrigerate again, placing weights on top of the fish. Refrigerate for another 12 to 24 hours so it cures for a total of 24 to 36 hours.
8. After that, cut open the Saran wrap, and under cold running water, wash off most of the mixture, leaving some dill on the fish.
9. Pat salmon dry, and freeze for 45 minutes. (This will make it easier to slice.)
10. Slice thinly on an angle so it comes off easily from the skin.
CITRUS CURED SALMON
This recipe uses very few ingredients, but the results are impressive. The beets provide the salmon with both a gorgeous color and a very subtle flavor.
INGREDIENTS
3.5 lb. side of salmon
1¼ cup kosher salt
¾ cup sugar
1 tsp. coriander powder
2 tsp. crushed black pepper
2 tsp. orange zest
1 tsp. lemon zest
3 medium beets (cooked, peeled and grated)
DIRECTIONS
1. Combine the salt, sugar, coriander, black pepper, orange zest, lemon zest and grated beets. Mix well.

8. Pat salmon dry, and freeze for 45 minutes. (This will make it easier to slice.)

MAPLE BOURBON SALMON
A sweet twist on your classic cured salmon, yet with that tingle that true cured salmon will provide.
INGREDIENTS
3.5 lb. side of salmon
1¼ cup salt
1 cup maple syrup
2 T. bourbon
DIRECTIONS
1. In a small bowl, combine salt, maple syrup and bourbon. Mix well.

9. Slice thinly on an angle so it comes off easily from the skin.
SALT-BAKED BRANZINO
Preparing branzino with this method is an old-school way of preventing the fish from getting dry. The salt traps all the air, creating a little steam room for the fish, which then results in the most amazingly moist branzino! Though the recipe uses a lot of salt, the result isn’t too salty.
INGREDIENTS
2 whole branzino (approximately 1¼ lb. each)
1 (3 lb.) container kosher salt
8 egg whites
1 lemon, cut into slices
1 bunch fresh dill
1 bunch fresh parsley
DIRECTIONS
1. Preheat the oven to 400°.
2. Combine the kosher salt with the egg whites to form a sandy mixture.
3. Take a quarter of the mixture, and spread it on a lined cookie sheet. Form it into a bed for your fish.
4. Place the fish on top, and into each fish cavity, place a couple of slices of lemon, half a bunch of dill, and half a bunch of parsley.
5. Cover the entire fish with the remaining sand-like mixture, leaving only the tail exposed.
6. Bake for 30 minutes.
7. Using a sharp knife or meat tenderizer, bang open the salt and serve.

PEPPERCRUSTED TUNA
Tuna is by far my favorite fish. When it comes to tuna steak, I recommend using only fresh, as opposed to frozen, fish. Raw tuna is absolutely delicious, but for those afraid of eating raw fish, this recipe creates that perfect, slightly seared exterior, while still leaving the inside beautifully rare.
INGREDIENTS
1 lb. sushi-grade ahi tuna
¼ cup soy sauce, for dipping
PEPPER CRUST
3 T. black and white sesame seeds
2 tsp. freshly crushed black pepper
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. garlic powder
1 tsp. Italian seasoning
DIRECTIONS
1. Mix the sesame crust ingredients together in a small bowl.
2. Pat the tuna dry, and dip all sides in soy sauce. This will help the crust stick better.
3. Generously coat with sesame mixture on all sides.
4. Heat a medium-sized skillet until super hot. Add the oil, and allow it to heat for an additional minute.
5. Carefully add the tuna to the skillet. Sear each side for no longer than 30 to 45 seconds.
6. Remove from heat. Allow the tuna to cool. Slice against the grain.

YAAKOV ASTOR
HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR REUVEN JAMNIK READING THE MEGILLAH IN THE LANDSBERG DP CAMP, PURIM 1946
On May 22, 1945, about three weeks after Germany’s surrender, Henry Blitt, a Jewish major in the American army, makes an unplanned stop at a farmhouse on his way to Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s favorite retreat, which is now in Allied hands. He meets the farmhouse’s occupant, a short, white-haired, bearded man.
“What do you think of the Nazis?” Blitt asks.
“I’m an artist,” comes the reply, “and have never bothered myself with politics.”
“But you look like Julius Streicher!” Blitt says jokingly in broken German, trying to make conversation.
A startled silence.
“You recognized me?” the man blurts out.
After a moment’s pause, Blitt com-
poses himself and arrests the man who, both inside and outside of Germany, was considered Nazidom’s number one Jew-baiter.
A Band of Thugs
Since the 1920s, Streicher, a Nazi ideologue and originator of some of the most vicious slurs against Jews, had been editor of the newspaper Der Sturmer. Containing everything from
grotesque caricatures of Jews as long-nosed vampires extracting blood from German youths for ritual slaughter, to calling for the outright expulsion and then extermination of Jews, Streicher printed as many as two million copies a year of his paper during its peak in 1938.
Streicher was one of 24 major Nazi war criminals brought to the historic German city of Nuremberg to stand trial for crimes against humanity. Even Hans Frank, the “Jew Butcher of Krakow,” and one of those hanged for his part in Nazi atrocities, admitted, “Here [in the prison at Nuremberg] are the would-be rulers of Germany, each in a cell like this, with four walls and a toi-

let, awaiting trial as ordinary criminals. Is that not a proof of G-d’s amusement with men’s sacrilegious quest for power? …This trial has been willed by G-d.”
Little did he or his captors realize how true it was, for an incredible string of “coincidences” tied the events in Nuremberg 1946 to events in Persia some 2,500 years prior.
Haman’s Ten Sons
As everyone knows, Megillas Esther tells the story of how the archetypal Jew-hater, Haman — the second most powerful man in the Persian Empire — persuaded the king, Achashverosh, to issue a decree to annihilate all the Jews. In an extremely improbable sequence of events, Esther became the wife of Achashverosh and was able to turn the tables on Haman and his diabolical plan. As a consequence, Haman and his sons were hanged on the gallows.
In perek tes of Megillas Esther, the names of Haman’s ten sons are mentioned explicitly: “Also Parshandasa, Dal-
phon, Aspasa, Porasa, Adalia, Aridasa, Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai and Vayezasa, the ten sons of Haman, the son of Hammedasa, the enemy of the Jews, they killed” (9:7–10).
Oddly, the pesukim go on to say that
Esther made another request the hang these ten sons: “Then Esther said, ‘If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Shushan to do again tomorrow according to today’s decree, and let Haman’s ten sons be hanged on the gallows.’ So the king commanded this to be done; the decree was issued in Shushan, and they hanged Haman’s ten sons” (9:13–14).
Chazal comment that Esther was asking Hashem, the King of kings (according to tradition, every time the words “King Achashverosh” appear, it refers to that king, but when the word hamelech, the king, appears on its own, it refers to Hashem) to repeat the incident in the future.
About 2,500 years after Haman tried to kill all the Jews, the Nazis tried to wipe the Jewish people off the face of the earth. After the war, the surviving Nazi leaders were tried at Nuremberg for this and other war crimes. These trials began on November 20, 1945.

On October 1, 1946, twelve of the defendants were sentenced to death by hanging for their part in the atrocities committed against the Jews and others. One of those convicted was Martin Bormann, who had never been captured and therefore was sentenced in absentia. The second was Hermann Goering, who committed suicide in his cell just hours before the executions. The remaining ten Nazis were hanged on October 16, 1946.
Although a sentence handed down by a military tribunal should have resulted in death by firing squad (or by electric chair, as practiced in the U.S.), the court specifically prescribed hanging, exactly as in Esther’s original request: “Let Haman’s ten sons be hanged.”
RabbahHoshana5707
There are a couple of other chilling details to consider. The Nazi hangings took place on October 16, 1946. On the Jewish calendar, October 16, 1946, corresponds to 21 Tishrei, 5707. This date was the seventh day of Sukkos, specifically Hoshana Rabbah, which according
to Jewish tradition is the day the judgment of non-Jewish nations is finalized. Even more inexplicable, however, is a strange tradition in the text itself. We know that every variation of the surface text, whether it be the size of the letters themselves or a variant spelling of a word, has specific meaning. In some cases, that meaning remains a mystery. In the list of the ten sons of Haman (Esther 9:7–9), there is an ancient tradition to change the size of four letters. The first three are the tav in the name of the first of Haman’s sons, the shin in the seventh name, and the zayin in the tenth name. These letters are all written smaller than the other letters. In Hebrew, tav has a numerical value of 400,
shin a numerical value of 300, and zayin a numerical value of 7. The tav, shin and zayin equal the number 707.
In addition, there is a fourth letter, a vav, which is also part of the tenth name, and which tradition dictates be written larger than all the letters around it. Vav, numerically, equals six.
Putting this all together, the different size letters point to a specific year in Jewish history. The large vav represents the sixth millennium (the thousand years between 5001 and 5999). The small letters represent the specific year within the sixth millennium. All told, the numbers yield the year 5707 — the exact year that the ten Nazi war criminals were hanged!

AMERICAN SOLDIERS HOLD PURIM AT THE FORMER CASTLE OF JOSEPH GOEBBELS, 1945 THE
DEFENDANTS IN THE
Purim Fest 1946
Although the striking parallels may have been lost on most observers at the time, they did not pass the notice of Nazidom’s most virulent anti-Semite, Julius Streicher.
Just a couple of days before his execution, Streicher chatted, as he often did, with court-appointed psychologist Gustav Gilbert, a Jew. “You must know about your people’s celebration of Purim,” the Nazi said to the Jew. “Imagine the irony of that event. Haman, the cruel minister of the Persian monarch, and his ten sons, marched to the same gallows he had built with intention to hang the Jews.”
The idea fascinated Streicher and stuck in his mind till the very end.
A couple of days later, as the noose was put around his neck before he was hanged, he shouted, “Purim Fest 1946!”
Echoes of Justice
The Nuremberg Trial did not, and could not, restore the lives of six million Jews. However, it restored, no matter how
small in comparison, a relative measure of justice to the world. And that was good, as Chazal teach: “The death of the wicked benefits themselves and the world” (Sanhedrin 71b).
Beyond the death of the wicked individuals, the Nuremberg Trial exposed Naziism for what it was. Judges and journalists — and soon millions of others — viewed images of concentration camp victims for the first time. Words like “Final Solution,” “Auschwitz” and “gas chamber” were first heard and became part of the public consciousness.
As a result, the world after the Nuremberg trial was at least somewhat more cognizant of its potential for evil. The trial established that the world still had somewhat of a moral backbone, that it could pull itself back from the precipice and judge fellow evildoers for what they were.
Purim in the Shadow of Modern Anti-Semitism
The story of the Nuremberg Trials in 1946 resonates deeply with the narrative of Purim, reminding us of the eternal cycle of Jewish survival and triumph over adversity. Just as in the days of Esther and Mordechai, when Klal Yisrael faced annihilation only to emerge victorious, the so-called Thousand Year Reich is dead, and “Am Yisrael chai.”
As we approach Purim 5784, amidst rising tides of hatred and uncertainty, these historical events fortify our emunah. They serve as a powerful reminder that Hashem’s hashgacha is always at work, even when hidden. Even if a thick darkness descends upon the world, “La’Yehudim haysa orah v’simchah” — to the Jews there is light and joy.
The story of Purim, both ancient and modern, teaches us that in every generation, when faced with seemingly insurmountable challenges, our salvation lies in the light of our unwavering bitachon in Hashem and our commitment to Yiddishkeit and its eternal values.

Writers like to be mysterious. Was it me who wrote about our chaotic Shabbos meals, or was it you? Sometimes we’d rather not tell… Of course, there’s a time and place for privacy, but in honor of Purim, some writers drop their disguise and reveal their true selves.
My real name is
Tali Chaya Edelstein
My pen name is Chaya Rosen (used for all five of my published books, some articles, and all of my writing for kids)
I chose this pen name because Rosen is my maiden name, and I began publishing before I was married. My father didn’t feel comfortable with me using my first name. I was still young and living in his home, and I respected his wishes and used my second name.
I’ve been writing since I learned to read and write, but I’ve been writing for publication for about seventeen years.
My first piece of published writing was my book, The Chaverim Boys Choir Live! It was published by Targum Press, back when they were one of the leading frum publishers. Having my manuscript accepted by a major publishing house was one of the most thrilling moments of my life at that stage.
What people don’t know about me is that I write. I live in Eretz Yisroel, and I write only in English. So only my closest friends and English-speaking friends know that I’m a published writer.
My real name is
Esty Heller
My pen name is Hadassah Eagle
I chose this pen name because Esther = Hadassah. (You never put that together, did you? Okay, insider secret: Most Hadassah bylines you see in print are really Esthers. My sincerest apologies to all the real Hadassahs out there, but your name checks off all the boxes.)
Eagle is a whole shakla v’tarya. My father is an author. His English pen name is Eli Shekhter (swoon, all you teens of 2001.) His Hebrew pen name is Tziporah Adler. (Tziporah, because my mother’s name is Faigy — same vort as Esther = Hadassah — and Adler, because that had been his father’s name before the war. So I took Adler, which in Yiddish would be an oodler, and translated that to… Eagle.
I dropped that pen name pretty quickly. Years later, when I wanted to use it for a piece that ran in Mishpacha, my editor asked me to use a different name, because she didn’t think Eagle was a real name…
I’ve been writing for fourteen years.
My first piece of published writing was my very first fiction story, which took me a few months to write. It took almost as long to settle on the perfect pen name. (I won’t tell you how long it took before I mustered the courage to submit that story. You don’t have to know everything.)
The story ran in Binah Magazine. It was a story about two very close friends, both older singles. (Look, I was entering the writing world; I had to do it in the most unique and creative way, right?) The story was packed with incredible imagery, littered with a thesaurus-load of adjectives, and drenched in really hot tears. With every sentence I crafted, using my vast arsenal of brilliant literary techniques, I pictured thousands of readers sympathetically sobbing their way through the story, and then, after rereading the story ten times and finally collecting their wits from the emotionally draining and eyeopening experience, penning heartfelt letters to the editor to share their awe over this unforgettable story. It only made sense for an author of such distinction to use a pen name. (A nom de plume, that is. You wouldn’t catch me using such an ordinary, layman’s term as pen name. Shudder.)
I didn’t tell anyone about this story. I thought I wouldn’t even tell my parents, until I realized I’d need their help in order to receive payment (ten cents a word, the baseline since the establishment of frum magazines). I was a teenager and didn’t have my own bank account yet.
So my mother got to kvell, but only privately, because I warned her not to tell anyone about it. On Shabbos, a neighbor came over to visit, and suddenly, she proceeded to recount this unbelievableincredible-inspiring-phenomenal story she’d just read in Binah Magazine.
My mother and I “exchanged proverbial glances.” It was all just too much. And there went the protection of my pen name.
What people don’t know about me is that I use a lot of pen names. You obviously don’t know that. That’s what pen names are for.
My real name is
Chaya Beer
My pen name is Shoshana Chaimsohn
I chose this pen name because I was in fourth grade, and becoming a writer was my biggest dream at that point. I chose Shoshana because I liked it and because my last name started with Blum, which I translated to the Hebrew Shoshana. Chaimsohn was a reference to my first name, Chaya.
I’ve been writing for four years now.
My first piece of published writing was an essay that was printed in The Boro Park View. Believe it or not, it was actually based on an idea I had when I was a young teenager. It was later recrafted, and then eventually published. However, the first piece of writing that was published under the name Shoshana Chaimsohn was an article about Hello Kitty that was published in The Circle.
What people don’t know about me is that my writing sometimes happens in the weirdest places, like in doctors’ waiting rooms. Yep, I schlep along my laptop and sit there typing.

My real name is
Chana Miriam Sima Spira
Yes. I was obviously too young to protest this long name at my kiddush. It took me quite a while to get through my name in Perek Kuf Yid Tes on the day of my wedding. But everyone knows me as Chany Spira.
My pen name is Chanie Spira. Hey, didn’t that come out of left field?
I chose this pen name because it wasn’t my fault that when I started writing my name, I didn’t know it’s way cooler to use an ie or at least an i instead of a y at the end. But baruch Hashem, as a writer, I can rectify all evils and spell my name with as much sophistication as I want, and… v’karo shmo b’Yisroel: pen name.
So, all Estys and Surys and Rivkys, the easy way to ditch the y is to become a writer.
Another pen name I used to go by was Bassie Schweid. Just because. But I haven’t used that pen name in years. I do have an email address in that name, though, so I have a junk account for Ali Express emails and to sign up at Old Navy.
I’ve been writing for fourteen years.
My first piece of published writing was a piece that won a Binah writing contest. I was in Yerushalayim for the summer and during the Three Weeks, and I came back from Yad Vashem in a somber mood. I had visited a special memorial building for the 1.5 million children who died al kiddush Hashem. The building was dark, with thousands of candles strategically placed next to mirrors to give the illusion of millions of neshamah licht. The loudspeaker announced names, ages and cities of origin for all the kedoshim. I came home and quickly wrote about the impact it made on me.
Binah was running a summer contest with the title Impact, and I tried my luck. I’d started dabbling in copywriting the year before, and magazine writing seemed like a pipe dream. Little me? Writing for the world at large?
A few weeks later, I received this email:
Congratulations!
The article you submitted for our contest has been chosen as grand prize winner. Enclosed is the final version of your article.
That was the beginning of it all.
The prize was a $400 gift card at Hostess International, and I bought my first set of china tableware with the money. That summer, I wrote and published two more stories. And, as they say, the rest is history.
What people don’t know about me It still takes me a few weeks to write a fiction story and only a few hours to write a true story.
It get easier. But not easy!
My real name is
My pen name is Malka Katzman, author of Teens Talk
I chose this pen name because my husband is a kohen, so we are “kohen tzedek men.” But my pseudonym history actually goes way back way earlier, to about fifteen years ago, when I briefly went with Malky Hollander. Why? Because Holland is the land of the Dutch. After I shared that lovely pen name with family and friends, I realized that I couldn’t publish private things under that name anymore. So I switched to Malka Katzman. But when my stories made their way into a book, I couldn’t keep it secret, either. Finally, I chose one pen name that I keep totally secret, and use Malka Katzman for everything else.
I’ve been writing for about 15 years.
My first piece of published writing was published in a then-new parenting magazine, which I think was called Parents’ Place and ran for maybe two issues before closing down. I remember getting the check for $82 and the thrill I felt getting dollars and cents for my work of creativity. I also got a poem accepted to Horizons, but that magazine sadly closed shop before my piece was published. Another piece was published in Nachas magazine, which was also discontinued not long afterward. Finally, many years and rejections later, my pieces are published in reputable magazines (but rejection is still a big part of the game).
What people don’t know about me is that alongside my love of writing, I have another unrelated hobby: the kitchen. I combined the two and often publish my simple, no-fuss recipes in the Inyan section of Hamodia, under my real name (nothing private there).

SHEVY HOLLANDER
GROCERY CASHIER CHANIE PECKER:
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LINE OF WORK?
When it comes to cooking, I’m pretty boring. I can’t think of much beyond chicken and potatoes. But we can’t have chicken and potatoes every night. When I made peace with the fact that supper must happen every night, and there must be some kind of variation, I started to, I confess, discreetly peek into other people’s shopping carts to see what they were buying in order to give me ideas on what I could make for supper.
But once I became a cashier, life got so much easier. All the stuff people are buying gets laid out for me to look at carefully, and some chatty customers even voluntarily share what they are cooking for supper that night. Let me tell you, my menu at home has become way more colorful since.

PAINTER YANKEL TRAUBE*:
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LINE OF WORK?
Baruch Hashem, I was blessed with great shalom bayis. My wife is wonderful, and so am I, if I may say so myself. The one area we sometimes don’t see eye to eye (but you can be sure we communicate very respectfully with each other when sharing constructive criticism) is cleanliness. I’m pretty laid back, and my wife is bordering on… okay, I don’t want to say anything disrespectful.
Take this example. She expects me to take my shoes off every time I enter the house. There are a lot of problems with that. First, I wear shoes with laces and always make a double knot, because I have a fear of tripping on my laces. It’s a job to get out of my shoes! Second, I really dislike making my quiet way around the house. I like to announce my presence with my footsteps.
For the sake of shalom bayis, I have been working on
taking off my shoes, but I’ve decided that out of the house, I will stomp around in boots and leave a trail behind me, and I’ll even get paid for leaving my mark all over the homes I work in.

EDITOR RIVKAH BLAU:
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LINE OF WORK?
I was an only girl, born smack in the middle of a minyan of brothers — literally. I was outnumbered from the day I was born. When family members’ opinions were solicited, whether they were about family plans, activities, Chol Hamoed trips or even food, I was always outvoted. It was as if I’d never spoken! I wanted to go to American Girl Place, but we went to climbing arenas instead. I wanted to eat Kani salad, but we ended up eating cholent and kishke. I wanted to play a board game, but the boys would just roughhouse.
When I would escape to my room to lick my
wounds, I would vow that when I would grew up, I would always have the last word.

DENTIST JOE BERLIN:
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LINE OF WORK?
At one point, I learned that when someone complains, it sort of turns into a competition of “who has it worse.” Too many people in my life whom I trusted to support me would give me a few minutes to talk, because they felt they were good listeners. But before I knew it, they would top off my issue with something they were dealing with that they considered much worse.
I was in a predicament. I needed to vent. I have a lot of things to vent about. Humanity, people in my life, youngsters with attitudes and dishonest dealers, but I couldn’t get a word out without having to listen to much more.
Being a dentist was a perfect solution. I get to talk and say whatever I want, and my listener cannot respond, challenge me or outbid me with their stories!

SHADCHAN PEREL FRIEDMAN:
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LINE OF WORK?
My job was a no-brainer; everyone’s always telling me that I have a photographic memory. People call me for phone numbers that I have stored in my mental Rolodex, and since I was a little kid, I have won every game of memory I’ve played. I’d compete with my friends, with my parents, with my grandmother. I even once competed with my teacher.
With my keen ability to remember faces and names, becoming a matchmaker was a natural choice.
A PET PEEVE:
People with names that are difficult to pronounce. I hesitate at my end of the line, having no idea how to address the person I’m calling without embarrassing myself or them.
A JOB CHALLENGE:
I can’t get away with cheaper telephone plans. I need to pay for unlimited plans, and it really makes a difference on my bottom line.
A REWARDING PART OF THE JOB:
Being invited to a vort at least once a week. I have a weakness for creamy miniatures.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS LINE OF WORK?
There were a lot of adults in my life growing up. My parents, uncles and grandfather were always talking about interesting stuff. “What? What?” I’d ask when I didn’t pick up on something. “Uh-oh, Pinny’s here!” They’d whisper to each other.
“Little boy, you should mind your own business,” they’d tell me. “This is not for your ears.”
With every passing conversation and every passing year, the curiosity for the business I was excluded from grew, and at one point I decided that when I’ll be all grown up like my uncles, I’ll make sure to mind everyone’s business.

Have you ever called the plumber when you meant Zeidy?
Ordered one dozen eggs and received a whole case?
Arrived at the wedding hall only to find the wrong crowd?
As part of our very human lives, we’ve all experienced mix-ups that left us laughing out loud (if the mortification wasn’t too intense), and has us laughing again each time we tell the story.
HERE ARE SEVEN ACCOUNTS
A Glorified Cleaning Lady
AS TOLD TO MALKA KATZMAN
I’m sitting in the park with my two little girls and enjoying every minute. It’s the little joys that make life happy, I tell myself. Although my oldest son became engaged two weeks ago and there is an abundance of joy at home, there’s something to say for these simple pleasures.
And I won’t deny the pleasure of having a good cleaning lady. As I sit and bask in the sunshine, Estelle, my cleaning lady, is scrubbing my kitchen counters and floors. I’m looking forward to the fresh scent of Mr. Clean when I come home.
As I walk toward the swings to the cries of “Push me!”, I suddenly lose my step and twist my foot. I stand there, helpless, until I limp my way painfully to the bench.
Now I’m no longer sure how I’ll be getting home to bask in the smell of Mr. Clean. I glance at my watch and realize that Estelle should be finishing up soon.
I scroll down my contacts to call Estelle.
“Hi, how are you?” I say. “Listen, please finish the bathrooms, and then meet me at the park so I can pay you. I just twisted my foot…”
“What?”
“Estelle, are you finishing the bathrooms? When you finish…”
Estelle, usually a chatterbox, is silent. I peer at the screen.
Esther B.
As in, my future daughter-in-law’s married sister Esther Baum. Whom I met for the first time two weeks ago at my son’s engagement.
I guess I must have mumbled some-
thing, because then the screen goes dark.
My foot hurts, and I wince. But something else hurts too, and I’m not sure what it is. Then a rumbling chuckle rises from my aching innards, and I cover my mouth so it doesn’t erupt, right there on the park bench.
It takes me a while to stop blushing every time I think about the gaffe. But when I do, my daughter-in-law and I enjoy gales of rocking laughter again.
With the Right Foot
HINDY KVIAT
The first day of school many years ago, the bell rang, and I headed to my tenth grade classroom. Although I was already an experienced teacher by then, I still had first-day jitters.
What made me even more nervous was that my students, who were milling about in the classroom doorway, did not budge when they saw me approaching. I got closer and closer, but they didn’t move an inch. Only when I was actually breathing on top of them did they begin to slowly — very slowly, even reluctantly — head to their seats.
“This class needs a strict talking-to about derech eretz and going into class when the bell rings,” I thought. My second thought was, “I don’t want to start the year on a negative note. I’ll address it at the end of the period, and really lay it on thick.”
The secretary came into the classroom about fifteen minutes into the lesson to collect registration cards from some students. When she showed me the names of the girls who were supposed to submit their cards, I told her there were no such students in my class.
Puzzled, she asked, “Is this the ninth grade?”
“No, it’s the tenth grade,” I corrected her, and then it clicked: I had gone into the wrong classroom
Back then, there were no parallel classes, and the classrooms were used for the same grades from year to year — except for that year! Additionally, the principal had been in an emergency meeting when class began, and the ninth-grade teacher was delayed, so no one noticed that I entered the wrong classroom.
Before I left the room, I told the girls, “See you next year, im yirtzeh Hashem.”
Was I ever glad that I had not given them a mussar schmooze! They knew I was not their teacher, and they simply hadn’t understood why I was coming into their classroom.
The next year, on the first day of school, I told them, “As I was saying, before I was interrupted…” And we continued right where we left off!

I’m Leaving — Are You?
AS TOLD TO KAYLA HABER
Raizy had been desperate to see her nephew Chaim engaged already, and when a girl Raizy knew was suggested, she played all of her cards, pushing the shidduch along until it finally, finally came to be. Mazel tov!
But the girl was from Montreal, and the chasunah was going to take place in her hometown. But Raizy and her husband Shimon wouldn’t dream of missing this wedding, despite the crazy logistics that attending would involve. Finally, they decided to leave their entire crew at home, turning this long road trip into a minivacation of sorts. No crying baby and fussy toddler in the backseat! They couldn’t wait.
They left New York the evening before the wedding so Shimon could still have a semi-normal night of sleep. The plan was to drive back as soon as the wedding was more or less over, drive through the night, and get back sometime in the morning so that Shimon wouldn’t have to miss more than one day of work.
As they approached Montreal, Shimon reminded Raizy that although he was planning on sleeping that night and maybe even napping during the day, they had to leave the wedding at a reasonable hour so that he could still get some shut-eye before going to work the next day. Raizy wasn’t too pleased at the thought of leaving early, but they agreed on playing it by ear and being in touch during the second dance.
Sometime during the second dance, Raizy checked her phone and discovered that Shimon
had texted her seven minutes earlier.
I’m tired and ready to leave. Do you still want to stay?
Raizy felt bad that she hadn’t responded immediately, and she knew it wasn’t fair to ask Shimon to stay longer.
No way leaving, she replied.
Across the mechitzah, Shimon wasn’t too happy with that answer, but he decided that he wouldn’t ruin his wife’s fun and would stay a little longer. He texted back okay and returned to the festivities.
In the meantime, Raizy threw quick goodbyes to everyone and dashed out of the hall to the coatroom. She changed into comfortable travel attire and ran out to the car — but Shimon wasn’t there yet.
Oy, Raizy thought. Maybe he went inside to look for her? She tried calling him, but it went straight to voicemail. Maybe he went to use the restroom? She waited and waited. Where was Shimon? She ran back to the hall, looking for someone she knew who could help her track her husband down. No success. She fired off a couple of text messages and tried calling him again.
Finally, finally, Shimon decided to take his phone out . Text after text popped up. WHERE ARE YOU?!
Where had they gone wrong? A single innocuous period was missing from Raizy’s text: No way. Leaving
Myrna and the Tisch
AS TOLD TO ROIZY BAUM
“All finished, missus.”
I turn around to see my cleaning lady, Myrna, wearing her coat and standing by the door.
I grab my wallet and extract a wad of bills. “How much this week?”
I hastily pack a bag of food for her — a bagel, a yogurt and a mini Klik chocolate — and search for what else I can give her. The apple that has been sitting on the counter since the morning winks to me. One of the boys probably left it behind, I think as I add it to her bag.
I wave her off. “See you next week!”
The phone rings a few minutes later. It’s my husband. He thanks me for the breakfast I’d prepared for him and regales me with details of last night’s tisch. Huge chassidiste that I am, I’m usually awake when he comes home from any tisch, eager to get the full scoop. But yesterday’s headache incapacitated me, and I had gone to bed early.
“You were fast asleep when I came home, but it was some tisch!” He then recounts with excitement that he’d received an apple from the Rebbe. “Not just a slice of an apple — an entire fruit! “
All of a sudden, the image of the apple he is referring to flashes vividly before me. As it happens, the prized apple, a coveted fruit of bracha every chassid vies to get his hands on and consume a part of, ended up in the possession of my cleaning lady — courtesy of none other than a fellow chassidiste!
My daughter, still a bas yechidah at 15 years of age, keeps rubbing it in. “Maybe, if you would have eaten it, Mommy, I’d be getting a sister!”
A year later, Myrna gives birth to a girl. Nobody is as devastated as my daughter.

Splitting Our Sides
ESTHER KING
My wedding was in the winter, when Shabbos starts early, so we planned to hold my Shabbos Kallah on Friday night.
I was the first kallah in my family, and everything was so new and exciting. All day on Friday, the doorbell rang with deliveries of gifts and platters of chocolate and candy. Each time, all of my sisters rushed to the door to see what was delivered and shriek and schmooze with whoever came. We also had some guests who were staying with us for Shabbos — a couple of cousins and close friends — and their arrival just added to the hullabaloo. My mother stayed gracious and tried not to get harried, but the whole day was a string of happy chaos.
Finally, we bentsched licht.
My mother removed her hands from her face and sat down for the first time all day. Everyone finally stopped moving and let out a collective breath.
Then the doorbell rang.
I looked at the clock. Shkiah was in about 15 minutes.
I looked at the door; Mr. Halpern was standing there.
The Halperns were old family friends of my parents, and now he was standing at the door, still wearing his work clothes, heavy boots and work pants, with some kind of offering in his hands. His tow truck was running impatiently in the driveway. He thrust what he was holding toward us and ran back to his car. As he turned, he called over his shoulder, “My wife says to split the pan!”
Gifts Gone Wrong
AS TOLD TO HADASSAH STEINMAN
A great girl had been redt for Chaim Schwartz, who was a great boy. Both wonderful homes, both wonderful kids — ehrlich and eidel and sweet. What could be more beautiful?
Although both families were chassidish, the mother of the girl didn’t have the minhag of wearing a white tichel on Friday night, as many chassidish women do. As the shidduch grew warmer, Chaim’s parents wondered whether the girl, Dina, would agree to wear a tichel. The question was duly forwarded by the shadchan, the answer was positive, and the matter was laid to rest. A few days later, Chaim and Dina were engaged. Mazel tov!
The rest of the week passed in frenzied excitement. There was a l’chaim, and soon there was a vort and a wedding scheduled.
The mechuteiniste, Mrs. Schwartz, ordered a beautiful bouquet of flowers to be delivered to Dina’s house for Shabbos. On Friday, the kallah dutifully called Mrs. Schwartz to chat a bit. But... Dina made no mention of the flowers! This left the new mechuteiniste just a tiny bit anxious. Had the kallah received her flowers?
Unbeknownst to Mrs. Schwartz, the florist, who also did gift wrapping and deliveries, had a bit of an overwhelming day, because Dina only received a package a few minutes into Shabbos. She couldn’t open it, of course, but what was this? A siddur... Tehillim... and a tichel?! Was this a mistake, or did her future mother-in-law really send her a tichel in honor of the first Shabbos after the engagement?
As soon as Shabbos was over, Dina opened the package to find a different kallah’s name embossed on the siddur and Tehillim. A few blocks away, there was probably another kallah who was getting married in a matter of days — and that girl had received a nice bouquet of flowers for Shabbos in place of her beautiful collection of gifts!
The mixup was quickly and belatedly corrected, and Dina, ever a sweetheart, called her mechuteiniste to thank her for the beautiful bouquet of flowers.
As soon as Mrs. Schwartz hung up with the kallah, she called her husband to share the mortification — and the laughter. Of all kallahs to receive a tichel in honor of her engagement!
In shock, we watched him jump into his truck and roar off, racing the rapidly setting sun.
We looked at each other. My mother was standing stock still, holding the foil-covered pan. She walked into the kitchen and put it down.
We gathered around as she uncovered the pan. Inside was a beautiful parve cheesecake, still warm and creamy. The top was decorated elegantly with a red glaze and some beautifully arranged fruit.
“He said to split the pan,” my mother said.
Maybe there was something inside the cake?
My mother picked up a knife, raised it high, and slashed deeply across the cake. The fruit and glaze began to sink in.
Nothing else happened.
My mother slashed it again, this time in the other direction.
“What are you doing?” my sister exclaimed.
“He said to split the pan,” my cousin explained.
My mother slashed the cake a few more times. The elegant fruit topping looked like the Titanic sinking in the middle of a churning cheesy sea. The knife was full of strawberry glaze.
“You murdered it!” my sister said.
We all stared at the ruined cake.
“I don’t really get it,” mother muttered. “He said to split the pan.”
“I don’t think we can serve this,” I said finally. “But I’m sure it’s delicious. We can taste it ourselves.”

Right Color, Wrong Wheels
AS TOLD TO ESTHER KING
I’ve been the principal of a large school for many years, and while my days are far from boring, there are certain routines that are pretty predictable. One of those is that I take the school transportation home at the end of the day, so I leave at the same time as the students.
One day I had an appointment scheduled for shortly after dismissal time. In order to get there in time, my husband and I arranged that he would pick me up from school and drive me there. He told me he’d be waiting in our blue minivan right in front of the building, and we’d leave straight away.
When the last bell rang, I rushed to pull my things together so I could get out quickly. There were some books I would need at home, so I grabbed the pile and threw my jacket and briefcase on top of it. I had to stick my head around the stack in order to see where I was going, and people were still talking to me as I rushed toward the door.
When I got outside, it was a glorious day. Hundreds of students were milling around, waiting for their buses, and the staff was there too, still drifting toward their rides. Frazzled, I spotted the blue minivan and dashed toward it. I managed to get there with my pile of belongings intact, yanked the door open, and maneuvered myself and my stuff into the front passenger seat. When everything was arranged, I let out a loud sigh of relief, pulled the door shut, and finally turned to look at my husband.
A strange man stared back at me. There was shock on his face.
It was a blue minivan, but it wasn’t my blue minivan.
Instinctively, I turned my head. Out the window I could see another blue minivan, with my husband waving despairingly toward me. With all the dignity I could muster, I gathered my things, got out of the car, and walked toward the other car.
Hundreds of high school girls roared with laughter and applauded as I got into the correct car.
I always tell my students it’s okay to make mistakes. I just hope I never make this one again!
“How are we going to get it out of the pan?” my sister asked. “It’s just a big mush.”
“We can cut the sides of the pan,” my cousin suggested. “That’s how I do it at home, I just rip the sides of the pan and split it open.”
“Split the pan!” my mother shouted.
The room erupted.
I don’t remember what we did with the cake. I assume we tasted it, and I’m sure it was delicious. It didn’t make it out onto the table, but it is the one single gift that we all still remember. I didn’t hear what my mother told Mrs. Halpern after Shabbos, but every time we recall her cheesecake, we laugh and laugh, and it still brings back that joy and happiness to this very day.

Purim can be a confusing day for preteen girls. On the one hand, they are too old to get dressed up, and they are too old for getting on a sugar high. On the other hand, they’re not yet adults who appreciate the greatness of the day, or even enjoy hosting festive meals. Nor are they like boys their age, who are either dressing up or collecting for their yeshivos in groups. I was there — someplace in that in-between stage — that Purim.
As the festivities got underway, my father summoned me to the living room.
“Yocheved, please bring a regular family mishloach manos from the kitchen.” I brought him a paper bag containing a homemade challah, an orange and a bar of chocolate. He slipped a white envelope into it. “Please go to the Brody family as my shaliach,” he said in a low voice.
I took the bag and hesitated. Of course, delivering mishloach manos was a mitzvah, and here it was my father requesting me to do so. But Mr. Brody had recently died, and I felt so… weird! Who would open the door? It would feel really awkward if one of the girls did. We knew each other only vaguely and it didn’t really “make sense” for me to be giving them mishloach manos out of the blue. They had never been on our mishloach manos list. They would probably guess the reason we were suddenly giving them mishloach manos and perhaps feel ashamed about it. But if the mother answered the door, what would I say?
Carrying the bag with the envelope tucked inside, I left the house. Soon I approached the Brody house, and I slowly walked up their front steps. There was no turning back now. I felt my face turning red even before Mrs. Brody opened the door.
“Ah freilichen Purim! ” she exclaimed.
Her warm greeting and broad smile dissolved my discomfort, and relief and joy enveloped me as I happily rushed back home with a bag of treats courtesy of
the Brody family.
Crossing over the bridge of preteen self-consciousness, I eventually acquired an appreciation for both my ability to do the right, though uncomfortable, deed, as well as marvel at the ingenuity of my father who managed to pair mishloach manos, matanos l’evyonim and chinuch into one neat package!
Purim ran a predictably unpredictable course each year. We delivered mishloach manos and visited the same people each year. Certain neighbors and relatives came to us each Purim. The thrill and fluid nature of the day revolved around when and how they would show up. Would they come in the morn-
YOCHEVED KATZ 164 www.thebpview.com 718.408.8770 The Boro Park View March 20, 2024
ing or later in the day? Calm or on a high? Would there be matching costumes for their crews or different get-ups for each child?
One year, we were in for a surprise. The Purim meal was in full swing when the doorbell rang, and my two younger brothers raced to the door to check out the newest arrivals.
We stared at our guests curiously. The Weiss and Melamud families never came to our home on Purim. They sent one or two children to deliver mishloach manos as neighbors do, and that was it. The relationship between the families was nice but cordial as we belonged to very different social circles. Both Rabbi Melamud and Rabbi Weiss learned in kollel, and typically could be seen walking down the street while looking into a sefer. Although we played with their children on occasion, we didn’t cross paths frequently.
Rabbi Weiss boomed, “We’ve been neighbors for twelve years. That’s why we came!”
But now the newcomers sprang into action, singing and dancing around the table with their little children and my siblings. Tatty joined for a couple of minutes before returning to his seat. Then I watched my father reach into his pocket, extract two envelopes and place some money inside. A relative sitting at the table discreetly slipped a bill into the envelope too. With all the goings-on, most of the assembled didn’t notice my father pressing the envelopes into Rabbi Weiss’s and then Rabbi Melamud’s palms as they drew closer while dancing around the table.
Rabbi Weiss boomed, “We’ve been neighbors for twelve years. That’s why we came!” My father nodded and waved away his protest. Rabbi Weiss passed two small containers of home-cooked food to his son, who placed it on the table. The spirited dancing resumed, and as I observed the scene. And then I grasped what was happening.
The men were both learning Torah full-time in kollel with large families to support, and my father, though not a man of great means, wanted to contribute to those special families. When I related this childhood memory to my father years later, he didn’t recall the incident. Apparently, it was all in a Purim day’s work for him.
The Rambam writes about Purim, “It is preferable for a person to spend on the needy than on his seudah and mishloach manos for his friends.” The words of the Rambam were real in my parents’ home.
Preparing for Purim now as an adult is fraught with frequently stressful decisions. How many mishloach manos should I prepare? Should the children buy new costumes or does the local gemach serve the purpose? Should I take each child to his teacher, or send the mishloach manos to school and cheder ? What will I serve for the Purim meal? Whom should I invite for the meal?
Recalling these two Purims of my childhood and my father’s discreetly passed envelopes is a powerful check-in for me to remember what is truly important on this great day. May we all merit the clarity amid the clamor and chaos of the great day.

All Over Your Face
In numerous cultures worldwide, the use of face paint holds much significance. It indicates status within the tribe, commemorates rituals or special events, and marks the completion of a rite of passage, especially the transition from childhood to adulthood.
Not a Joke
Introducing the 24K Gold Facial Mask, a luxurious treatment that endows your face with instant radiance. This precious gold mask is incredibly user-friendly. Its lightweight and delicate texture ensures effortless application. This is not a Purim joke. Steal of a deal — get two gold facial masks for $120!
Bloody Buffoon
The exact origin of the clown nose is uncertain, but as legend has it, a German circus performer in the 1860s named Tom Belling was accidentally pushed into the show ring. Belling fell, injured his nose, and the crowd erupted in chants of “Auguste! ” — German slang for fool. This incident gave birth to the stereotype of the Auguste clown, along with the iconic red nose.
AniMasks
The concept of masks extends beyond humans; it is observed in animals as well. Birds and mammals, for instance, employ masks in different ways. Certain species showcase facial markings resembling masks, which function either as a form of camouflage or a means of communication.

Mask Museum
Nestled in the United Kingdom, the British Museum proudly boasts the world’s most extensive collection of disguises. With over 9,000 masks from every corner of the planet, it offers a journey through the quirky and diverse world of cultural masks. It’s the ultimate hangout for mask nerds and researchers who want to unravel the mysteries behind humanity’s obsession with disguises.
Legal Loopholes
During the days of the Venetian Republic, maskwearing was turned into a year-round fashion statement. And it was not just about looking fabulous. These masks played roles in some seriously sketchy business, like high-stakes gambling and smuggling. Those clever Venetians also used masks as a sort of stress ball for societal tensions. A person in a mask was allowed to misbehave without the fear of handcuffs, all thanks to a ridiculous law that said as long as one sticks to their mask’s character, they’re untouchable.
Emotional Masquerade Party
Therapy can get pretty cool — especially when masks are involved! In some therapy styles, masks aren’t just for Purim; they’re tools for expressing yourself and diving deep into your feelings.
Roar!
Your toddler is not the only one waking up from nightmares after encountering masked figures. Throughout wars and conflicts, masks served not only to shield faces but also as tools for instilling fear in the enemy.
Mastering the Hunt
Early Stone Age hunters, as depicted in petroglyphs, employed masks for camouflage and psychological purposes. Some masks were crafted from prey hide or fur to disguise scents, while others resembled the hunted animal, aiding hunters in getting their prey.
An Authentic Piece of Venice
Venetian masks, those exquisite and often creepy pieces of art, were largely fashioned by skilled artisans known as “maschereri,” or mask-makers. They operated in dedicated craft workshops, crafting masks of various shapes and sizes. Throughout the years, numerous Venetian masks have emerged, inspired by the customs and traditions of Venetian inhabitants, and some have gained global popularity. One such example is the plague doctor mask, inspired by the masks worn by Venetian doctors during the black plague. These masks served as protective gear when visiting patients, helping to prevent infection.

INSIDE THE TUNNEL…
WHAT IS CIUDAD PROHIBIDA?
WHAT’S THIS TUNNEL
THIS IS THE TUNNEL THAT LEADS TO CIUDAD PROHIBIDA.
WELCOME TO THE FORBIDDEN CITY.
THEY ORDERED THEIR DESCENDANTS TO CONTINUE HIDING THE CITY AND AVOID APPROACHING IT, EVEN THOUGH THERE AREN’T TREASURES THERE ANY LONGER. IT HAS BECOME A WILL FOR ALL GENERATIONS, A KIND OF FAMILY SECRET.
WE WOULDN’T HAVE LET YOU COME HERE, BUT WHAT CAN WE DO? NOW THAT THE DOORWAY IS BLOCKED...
THE SECOND REASON... ON THE GROUND! QUICKLY!
OH RIGHT, YOU AREN’T FAMILIAR WITH OUR LANGUAGE... IT’S…

WHY… WHY IS IT FORBIDDEN?
THE FIRST REASON IS THAT, ACCORDING TO THE STORY, OUR ANCESTORS FOUGHT AGAINST THOSE WHO LIVED IN THE CITY, KILLED THEM, AND THEN CONCEALED THE CITY AND ITS TREASURES FROM OTHER PEOPLE.

ISN’T IT AMAZING?
EVERYTHING HERE HAS BEEN AROUND FOR… LEIB?
HE DISAPPEARED!
OKAY, I GET IT. AN ABANDONED, FORBIDDEN CITY FULL OF TRAPS. A VERY NICE TOURIST SITE... WHAT’S THE FASTEST WAY TO GET OUT OF HERE AND BACK HOME?
THIS WAY.

Heed the call of our Gedolim
Rabbi Elya Brudny shlit”a
Rabbi Uri Deutsch shlit”a
Rabbi Moshe Hillel Hirsch shlit”a
“We’re giving a commitment that the money is to be dispensed only with the haskama of a committee represented by the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah. The need is for food, board, chinuch... and we hope that the Keren Yeshua will help in the immediate and with the long term, be’ezras Hashem.”
“Agudas Yisroel, under the guidance of the Moetzes, has always risen to the task to provide Acheinu Bnei Yisrael with the aid that they need. A fund has been set up to address the needs of Yoshvei Eretz Yisrael, and all of us are called upon by the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah to support this.”
“Eis tzarah hi l’Yaakov umimeni nivashea. We’re in an eis tzarah, we’re in a milchama with many problems, and we need the help of Yidden all over the world. There are many expenses for the people of the South, and tzedaka for them is a very important thing.”
Rabbi Yeruchim Olshin shlit”a
“Rav Aharon Kotler says that when the tzibbur is b’tzaar there’s a chiyuv to be mishtatef in the tzarah, for the tzibbur to feel with them. Everybody should give b’yad rechava, to give generously to help these mishpachos.”
