BREATHTAKING (Re: A Tree in the Field, Issue 21) Your entire Tu B’Shvat issue was gorgeous, but your article about nuts was especially breathtaking! The writing was so elegant, and I learned a lot about nuts that I previously did not know. Thank you for a great read. I.R.

These fruits, in addition to some others, were clearly displayed in the pictures and in the list of ingredients. (The strawberries shown were completely whole with the leaves still attached. Even hechsherim that are more lenient than the NSK do not allow strawberries to be eaten in such a form!) Not only was it disappointing to find contradictory information printed in your magazine, there is also the risk of causing a less knowledgeable Jew to mistakenly eat bugs as a result of innocently following a recipe printed in a kosher magazine. Printing a magazine that will reach a large population is a great responsibility, and care must be taken that ideas and information displayed are in strict accordance with Torah values and halachic rulings of today’s rabbanim. QUESTIONS ABOUT CLEANING (Re: Bite-Size Pesach Cleaning, Issue 21) Thank you so much for your guide to Pesach cleaning — I look forward to participating! I have a question about the solution that you suggested to use for cleaning pillows and comforters. It seems appropriate for top loader machines. Would it work in a front loader, too? And if yes, where would I pour in the mixture — directly into the machine or in the detergent compartment? Three cups of water seems a bit much for the detergent compartment. Thank you so much for helping us get to Pesach in an easy, calm (and even exciting!) manner. B. Klein TZIRI HERSHKOVITZ RESPONDS: When using the recipe in a front loader, make sure to dissolve the ingredients fully in very hot water before adding it to the washing machine. Try “deflating” the pillows as you put them into the machine, and then pour the ingredients directly onto the innermost pillow. It is also a good idea to put the cycle on a SOAK setting before proceeding with the regular wash. Hatzlacha!
TZIRI HERSHKOVITZ RESPONDS: Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda is sold in most large superstores like Walmart. Essentially, it is pure sodium carbonate and works amazingly well as a laundry booster. If it is difficult to locate, “super washing soda” can be created at home from baking soda. The instructions are relatively simple: In an oven preheated to 400°, pour a ½-inch-thick layer of baking soda on the bottom of a baking dish. Bake for approximately 1 hour, stirring once halfway through. Once the texture thins, allow it to cool and pour into an air-tight jar.
A JUXTAPOSITION (Re: Bite-Size Pesach Cleaning, Issue 21) While I usually enjoy your magazine, reading it this week left me upset. The fact that “Pesach is inching closer” is “not quite bad news, but an awareness you might have been hoping to avoid”? Pardon me for disagreeing, but a yom tov given to us by Hashem is reason for rejoicing, and many of us do genuinely look forward to it properly — without stress. The article was terrific and very well written; it gave the readers hope and energy, and the optimism that yes, we can clean our houses and make every corner spotless. However, it should have been printed in one of your June or July issues, when so many people are off from work and have the extra time to focus on house-cleaning. It is misconceptions like this one that are the cause of the needless pre-Pesach anxiety many women feel. We are only obligated to search for actual pieces of chometz. My rav once told me a bedroom should take between ten and fifteen minutes to clean, twenty if it has a lot of things in it. In his words, “open the drawers, pick up the clothes, and look for pieces of chometz the size of Cheerios or larger. Unidentifiable crumbs remain in the drawer. Put clothes back.” In areas that you don’t eat, you are only searching for, and removing, actual pieces of chometz, not crumbs. It is an inspection that is relatively easy to perform. Don’t just believe me; ask your rav. I loved the article. But the juxtaposition between its content and “Pesach” bothered me; the two have nothing to do with each other. A Balabusta Who Doesn’t Stress Pesach
A FAMILY FAVORITE I’m confused about an ingredient in the whitening recipe mentioned in the Pesach program. Where can I get Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda? I’ve tried asking for it at my local grocery, and all I managed to get my hands on is Arm & Hammer baking soda, but I’m quite sure that’s not it. A Reader

PA RS H A S Y I S RO Little Chaim and little Yanky were running around as their mothers chatted nearby. All of a sudden, the two boys ran into the street where a delivery truck was approaching, heading straight for the two boys. Thankfully, the driver spotted the children and slammed on the brakes, stopping just in time to avoid a disaster. The two mothers screamed and ran to retrieve their sons, pulling them to safety on the sidewalk. Chaim’s mother grabbed him by the arms and turned him to face her. “Don’t you ever run into the street! EVER! You could have been hurt or even killed, chas v’shalom! she screamed at him. Then she burst into tears of relief and pulled Chaim into a tight hug. As Chaim listened to his mother’s sobs, and as he felt her tears drip onto him, Chaim knew he would never frighten his mother like that again. He would stay out of the street. Meanwhile, Yanky’s mother took a softer approach. She took Yanky by the hand and gently led him to the sidewalk.

Yanky’s mother looked down at Yanky and smiled. “Yanky, zeeskeit, you gave Mommy a big scare. Please don’t run into the street again, okay?â€? The two mothers delivered the same message, but in vastly different ways. Which child is more likely to have not only heard but also listened to and internalized the message? Which child is less likely to run into the street again? Only one child is likely to be ready to answer along the lines of naaseh v’nishmah, and say, “Yes, Mommy — I have heard you and I understand. I will listen.â€? That child is the one whose mother gave over the vital message with a fiery passion. When the Torah describes Matan Torah, the lashon greatly emphasizes the dramatic fire and loud noise with which the Torah was given, as it says in this week’s parsha, “Vay’hi vayom hashlishi bih’yos haboker vay’hi kolos uv’rakim v’anan kaveid al hahar v’kol shofar chazak m’od‌ — It came to pass on the third day at morning that there was thunder and lightning‌ and the blast of the shofar was powerful, and the entire nation that was in the camp trembled‌ And Har Sinai was all in smoke because Hashem had descended upon it in fire, and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the entire mountain quaked violently. The sound of the shofar was becoming stronger and stronger‌â€? (Shemos 19:16,18–19) Hashem gave us the Torah with great fire and loud noise. Likewise, when we teach Torah to our children, we must do so with fire — with hislahavus. That does not mean that we should give the Torah with anger, chas v’shalom, but with a passion. The more passionate we are about Torah, the more likely it is that
When we teach Torah to our children, we must do so with fire — with hislahavus.
Â
             € ‚ ƒ „  …   †
the Torah be emblazoned into the hearts, minds and souls of our children. We need hislahavus in the way that we ourselves perform our avodas Hashem, and we need hislahavus in the way in which we teach Torah to our children. A child cannot grasp the great importance of our mesorah. But a child does look up to the adults in his or her life and values what he or she perceives to be important to the adults. The word mashpia comes from the word shapua, which means an incline. An incline, such as a roof, allows water to flow down. Our values flow down to our children, so in order to properly impart the Torah to our children, we must keep the Torah ourselves, and we must do so with passion. Now we see all the more why the actions of Amalek were so evil. Rashi cites the Midrash Tanchuma regarding the pasuk, “Remember what Amalek did to you… how he encountered (karcha) you along the way…” (Devarim 25:17). The word karcha has the shoresh kar, which refers to heat and cold, so the pasuk can also be rendered, “Remember what Amalek did to you… how he cooled you off (karcha) along the way…” Amalek cooled the fire in our hearts for avodas Hashem. We can see this using gematria. If we remove the fire from Yisroel — removing the letters aleph and shin — then the gematria of the remaining letters yud, reish, and lamed is the same as the gematria of Amalek. Cooling our hislahavus not only endangers our own avodas Hashem, but it also threatens our ability to pass down our mesorah. May we all stoke the fires of passion for Torah in our hearts, and in doing so, pass on our mesorah to future generations.

In Big Win for Yeshivah Parents, State Postpones Implementation of NYS Private School Education Guidelines An exceptionally large number of public comments had the New York State Department of Education postponing any decisions regarding potential guidelines that could regulate private school education. Under state law, the DOE is required to review all public comments before approving any new guidelines. In a statement released this past Monday, Board of Regents Chancellor Betty Rosa said that public feedback plays a crucial role in any policy changes that could affect private schools statewide. During a state-mandated comment period that ran from July 3 to September 3 this past summer, the DOE received more than 140,000 responses regarding its proposed regulations that could potentially mandate an expanded curriculum in all of New York’s private schools. DOE personnel are continuing the review process, which is proving to be far more time-consuming than originally anticipated, prompting the announcement that no decisions would be forthcoming at this time. In its statement, the DOE acknowledged that many of the comments expressed concern that the suggested guidelines would infringe on personal rights and run counter to parents’ religious beliefs, in addition to limiting the unique education offered at private schools. Interim DOE Commissioner Shannon Tahoe said that the agency would re-engage with the private school community to further discuss any possible educational guidelines. According to Hamodia, Tahoe said that the number of comments received was unprecedented, a factor that influenced the DOE’s decisions to postpone any changes at this time.
An Epic Display of Kavod HaTorah at Dirshu Siyum in Newark The wave of Daf Yomi siyumim that has been sweeping North America since late December came to a final, triumphant climax this past Sunday as Dirshu celebrated the culmination of the 13th cycle of Shas at three venues in Newark, New Jersey. Dirshu had originally planned to hold its siyum at the Prudential Center arena, whose capacity varies from 17,500 to 19,500 seats, de-
46 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / February 12, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
pending on the event. But as ticket sales progressed at a dizzying pace, Dirshu added two more venues for its siyum, expanding the program to New Jersey Performing Arts Center and the New Jersey Symphony Hall, with an exclusive women-only event. Well over 45,000 people turned out for the Dirshu siyum, which was graced by the presence of rabbanim, roshei yeshiva and dayanim who came from near and far, including the Sanzer Rebbe, shlit”a, Rabbi Dovid Cohen, shlit”a, Rabbi Shimon Galei, shlit”a, and Rabbi Aharon Taussig, shlit”a. Thousands more listened on live streams that were broadcast over phone lines and other media outlets. Hamodia reported that the first speaker of the evening was Rabbi Zev Smith, who said that the intense learning and chazarah of the Dirshu program creates a magnificent, bejeweled crown for Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Rabbi Smith called on Dirshu participants to spend even more time in the beis midrash, while simultaneously crediting the wives for their dedication. “Teyereh Yidden,” said Rabbi Smith. “If there is so much limud haTorah going on, it is because there are n’shei chayil who realize that their greatest pleasure is to shpatzir zich (take a stroll) with their husband’s kol Torah.” In his address to participants, Rabbi Taussig noted that the siyum was being held on Tu B’Shvat, a day that is well known for its ability to bring greatness into the world, adding that the first Siyum HaShas had been held exactly 89 years ago. Rabbi Taussig related that Rav Meir Shapiro told his student, Rabbi Shmuel Wosner, that he had merited two children — Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin and Daf Yomi. “The pasuk in Vayigash says ‘shnayim yaldah li ishti,’” said Rabbi Taussig. “Shnayim is roshei teivos of Nishmas Meir Yehuda Shapiro and yaldah is roshei teivos of Daf Hayomi and Yeshiva Lublin.”
The siyum also featured an unprecedented musical production that included both the Shira Choir and the Malchus Choir from Eretz Yisroel, with approximately 50 musicians from both Hamenagnim and the Freilach Band performing together, according to Yeshiva World News. An emotional and riveting thirty-minute presentation titled Hinei Yomim Ba’im told the story of a father and son who were at the 1923 Knessiah Gedolah in Vienna where Rabbi Meir Shapiro first proposed the idea of Daf Yomi, and it also chronicled both world wars, demonstrating how limud haTorah sustained Klal Yisroel even during its darkest moments. Dirshu has already held siyumim in England, France, South Africa and Yerushalayim, with the final siyumim to be held in Pinsk and Radin in March.
Reporter Finds Students LetterPerfect at Yeshivah Spelling Bee The editor-in-chief of a local media outlet found himself impressed by a group of third through sixth graders after being asked to serve as a judge at the school’s annual spelling bee. Stephen Witt, founder of the Kings County Politics news site, was invited by Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein to come to the unnamed yeshivah, one of the 28 targeted by the New York City Department of Education for providing students with substandard secular education. In his report of the spelling bee, Witt termed the attacks on yeshivos a “false narrative” and noted that students in the school enjoy a STEM curriculum of science, technology, engineering and math, with gifted students receiving accelerated coursework. Students in the spelling bee spelled the words cantaloupe, millisecond, deficiency and hemisphere correctly, with Witt noting he likely would not have been able to do the same himself. “To learn these words, perhaps I need to go back to grammar school, or maybe even sign up for a course at a local yeshivah,” quipped Witt.
Citing Security Concerns, New Yorkers Banned From Federal Trusted Traveler Programs Get ready to spend more time at the airport on the return trip home from Eretz Yisroel and other international locations after a move by the Department of Homeland Security that will keep New Yorkers out of nationwide trusted traveler programs intended to speed up border crossings. ABC News reported that the state was informed by DHS last week that it would be accepting no new applications or renewals from New Yorkers for programs such as Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST that expedite the process of re-entering the country. The surprise announcement came a day after President Donald Trump spoke about il-
legal immigration in his State of the Union address, with DHS pointing the finger of blame at the state’s recently enacted Green Light Law. This law cleared the way for illegal immigrants to apply for driver’s licenses while simultaneously blocking both Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Customs and Border Protection from accessing Department of Motor Vehicles records. In a three-page letter to state officials, DHS said that it was barring New Yorkers from enrolling in the programs, because federal agencies would be unable to protect citizens from “menacing threats to national security” because of its inability to access the DMV’s database under the Green Light Law. Effective immediately, state residents will no longer be able to enroll or re-register in federal trusted traveler programs, a move that will affect 80,000 pending applications and another 150,000 New Yorkers whose memberships will be up for renewal by the end of the year. The move also affects nearly 30,000 commercial truck drivers enrolled in a program that gives them faster access at border crossings between the United States and Canada. It will also create delays and higher costs for anyone selling used cars titled in New York to out-of-state buyers. The DHS action does not currently affect the popular TSA PreCheck program, although it did not rule our further limitations in the future. “These are all unfortunate consequences of New York’s Green Light Law,” said DHS Acting Deputy of Security Ken Cuccinelli. “Obviously, we would urge New York to undo that law and restore some sanity to its own attempts to help preserve public safety.” Governor Andrew Cuomo was quick to lash out at the president for the ban, saying it was politically motivated and an abuse of power, noting that thirteen other states and Washington, D.C., have Green Light laws of their own but have yet to see similar restrictions. New York State Attorney General Letitia James said that she planned to file suit against the Trump administration for unfairly targeting Empire State residents. “This new policy will negatively impact travelers, workers, commerce and our economy, so we will fight the president’s shortsighted crusade against his former home,” said James.

Recap: Janek and Ulush escape to Senica, leaving Edo in Bratislava with someone from the Vaad. Janek contemplates sending Edo to Eretz Yisroel with a group who will be traveling by boat, but Ulush is adamantly against it. In Yerushalayim, Miri can’t contain her jealousy over her younger sister’s good fortune: her plum apartment, the elegant wedding, and now perhaps even being supported by Korman for the whole first year... Yerushalayim
“Good morning, Zeidy.” Miri pushed the carriage into the small room and entered. The carpet swallowed her footsteps, but her grandfather raised his head at the sound of her voice and smiled. “Oh, Miri, hi, good morning!” Tzippy chirped. “You haven’t seen my album yet. We just got it last night. What do you say to the design?” “Design?” Miri took a step closer, parking the carriage in the corner. Oh, it was a digitally enhanced album, not an album with clear pockets that you slide the pictures into, like hers. The tome was elegantly bound, made of glossy, gold-edged pages, and each photo was cleverly designed. “Here, look, there you are.” Tzippy hastily turned back a few pages. “Here are all the family photos from the beginning. And look how cutely Shmuely is posing. It’s a good thing you brought him for the pictures!” “Right.” Miri couldn’t help but smile, seeing her son’s large eyes sparkle at her from the pages of the album.
“What do you say, Zeidy? The photographer did a great job, didn’t he? Look, he took the curtain that was in the hall and turned it into a background on all these pages. Then, for the pictures at the seudah, he played the same game with the centerpieces. See how it looks like they’re actually behind the photos? And he also used this feature to make a shadow effect.” Zeidy nodded solemnly. “Do you think he’s really interested?” Miri muttered as she bent over from behind them to look at the album. “No less than the stories about the kids in your kindergartens. Mommy suggested that I bring the album to show Zeidy, if you really want to know,” Tzippy whispered back. Her expression was pleasant; she didn’t look angry or confrontational, and her tone was also neutral. But that did not soften her words. Tzippy continued leafing through the album, and their grandfather studied it quietly, nodding every so often. “Oh, here’s Winograd, my old neighbor,” he said suddenly. Miri tried to catch a glimpse from her seat on the side, but the album

was centered between Tzippy and her grandfather, and no matter how hard she craned her neck, she couldn’t see the mostly black pictures too clearly. Tzippy must have been showing Zeidy the spirited dancing on the men’s side. As if that interested him either. No, she was right; these pictures were really not captivating their grandfather’s interest. Probably besides for that one with Winograd, his former neighbor, there was nothing to hold his concentration for more than five minutes. Really, what was Tzippy thinking? That he had the patience to go through five hundred photos, one by one? Didn’t she notice that his eyes were closing every few seconds? That certainly didn’t happen when Miri shared her stories about her preschool students. And Tzippy kept gushing on and on — she wouldn’t stop! Finally, after sitting in bored silence for a few minutes, Miri couldn’t restrain herself. “Okay, now let me see. Zeidy’s seen enough, right, Zeidy?” “Right.” Their grandfather smiled and nodded his head, just like he had done in response to Tzippy’s commentary. “Fine,” her younger sister relented. “You can look, but start from the beginning.” And she sat and smiled calmly as she listened to her sister’s admiring comments. Because when all was said and done, Miri couldn’t help but be complimentary. The wedding had been gorgeous, the “hall” and decor had been more than perfect, and in this album, it all looked three times as glamorous as it had been in real life. “Oh, I want to frame this picture to hang up on the wall here.” Tzippy pointed to a picture of their grandfather leaning on his cane under the chuppah, holding the cup of wine in his right hand. “We asked the photographer to develop a few more pictures for our parents. I also asked him for this picture of Shmuely…” She turned back a few pages. “He made two copies of this one, one for Mommy and one for you.” She looked at her nephew. “He’s such a cutie,” she said adoringly. “And I’m happy you were able to buy him that outfit. I mean, at least you got something out of this whole thing, too, right?” “Uh-huh.” Miri turned a page. “But those reprints — you know, besides for the album — I’m not sure Korman is paying for those. It’s not really part of the wedding expenses, you know? And over the last few days, I’ve been wondering how
I’m supposed to start figuring out money and these kinds of things… you understand?” She smiled, but there was a frisson of tension in her voice. “Yes,” Miri said. She stood up. She walked over to the carriage she had borrowed from her sister-inlaw, and rummaged in the old matching diaper bag. There was her wallet. “How much does it cost to develop a picture?” she asked, uber-politely. “You need money?” Zaidy asked, having just opened his eyes to see her taking out her wallet. “There’s some small change in the drawer here. Take as much as you need.” “I’m not the one who needs it,” Miri said, as she tugged the zipper open harshly. “It’s Tzippy who doesn’t have the one and a half shekels a copy of a photo of my Shmuely costs. But it’s alright, Saba; I can deal with this hole in my wallet. I have lots of money, baruch Hashem. I even had a few hundred shekels to buy a wedding present for my dear sister; I’m so generous, in case you hadn’t heard.” She wouldn’t mention the new carriage she had dreamed about, which was now on hold, among other things, because she’d spent so much out of her own pocket — in addition to her ma’aser money — on Tzippy’s linen. She wouldn’t stoop that low. “So very generous,” she repeated as she nearly threw the two coins onto the table in the room.

* * * * * Gustav didn’t move. He squinted as he pushed away the branches that were poking his face, and waited. Maybe it had been foolish to leave the Cohens’ house so quickly, but on the other hand, it was his only opportunity. If he would have waited for Ulush to return, she never would have let him go. Later, when Janek would have come home, it would have been even more complicated. It was very cold, and the moisture from the ground seeped into his clothes, but still he did not move. He’d change his clothes later; now it would not be wise to stand up, especially after he’d waited so long. Soon the boys in the orphanage would all go to sleep, and the path to the cellar would be clear. Even if they had appointed a new night counselor instead of Emil, he was supposed to patrol upstairs, near the beds, not near the cellar. After another fifteen minutes, Gustav finally saw the lights going out in the boys’ rooms, one af-

ter another. Only one small window at the end of the hallway remained dimly illuminated, though the entire ground floor was lit up. Gustav slowly stood up, stretching his back and his shoulders. He’d been sitting in this field for more than five hours, facing the back entrance and waiting for the right moment. With tiny steps, he moved closer to the wall, and then pressed himself against it. After a few more seconds, he reached the locked gate. He knew the pattern of the wrought iron bars very well, and it took him less than a minute to get to the other side. He hesitated for a moment. It was absolutely silent. Even the wind that had filled his ears throughout the hours he had been sitting in the field, waiting for night, was now still. He stood motionless, arms folded, not knowing what he was waiting for. After a few long moments, he began walking toward the familiar door, which was open wide. No one seemed to be around, so Gustav took a deep breath — and entered. Running silently and swiftly, he leaped down the stone stairs into the cellar, inhaling the smell of plum jam and pickled cucumbers that the cook stored down there. This was not the first time he was doing this in the dark. Once, when he was little, he’d even sneaked down here in the middle of the night to nibble at the toast he had saved from breakfast. Theodore had nearly caught him then. He’d seen Gustav from afar, but hadn’t been able to identify which of the children he was. After a few minutes, he’d gone to make his rounds of the children’s beds to see who was awake. Theodore hadn’t found anyone up, or so he had thought. Gustav had always been able to convincingly pretend he was sleeping. Last night, as well, when Janek and Ulush had been talking in their living room, he had heard every word of their conversation. Janek had said it was sad to start life again from zero, and Ulush had said it was impossible to know what kind of wonderful families the children had come from. It was clear that “the children” referred to him and Edo; which other children could she be thinking about? Janek had said that this war had caused so much destruction, for years and generations to come, and who knew if it would ever be possible to repair the destruction that had been wrought. And then he had said that they all had to get out of the war, because in a lot of ways, they were really still in it. And when Ulush heard that, she had burst out crying and said that it was better for her to think about the children, and not about herself. At that point, Gustav must have fallen asleep, because he didn’t remember what happened after that. “Is somebody here?”
Gustav didn’t move. He stood frozen in a corner, hoping with all his heart that the thin beam of light dancing on the floor and walls of the cellar would not shine on him. “Whoever is here, come out right away! I don’t allow children to enter the cellar without permission!” It was Theodore. Gustav suddenly felt a rush of longing for the man. But he didn’t move. He willed Theodore to move on, so he could get to the next corner. Under the tile that he had been able to remove — with the help of the pocketknife Theodore had once given him — were the treasures that he had forgotten to take when he’d run away from this place. The pocketknife itself was also supposed to be there, and it was a shame to leave it. It was a good one. Theodore had given it to him as a gift the first time he’d gone to their church. “When I find you, there will be big trouble. I suggest that you come out right away and admit that you decided to come down here and help yourself to pickled cucumbers!” Theodore paused, and then raised his voice. “Do you hear me? Whoever you are, come out right now, or you’re going to get a lashing like you haven’t gotten in a long time!” Gustav still did not move. Theodore finally fell silent. The beam of his flashlight danced around for a few more minutes near the entrance. For a moment it seemed to be drawing closer to Gustav, and then it flashed around in broad circles over and over before fading into the darkness. The wooden steps squeaked with each footstep. Gustav remained there, in the corner, waiting. He had no idea how much time had passed, but it felt like at least ten minutes. Maybe twenty. Only then did he emerge from the corner he was in, holding his shoes in his hands. His eyes flitted in every direction as he approached the tile and removed it. Everything was waiting for him as he had left it — three colorful candies from Emil, the pocketknife, and the folded paper that Edo’s mother had given him so many years ago. He stuck all the things into his pocket, returned the tile to its place, and began walking back to the entrance of the cellar. The wooden stairs squeaked slightly as he climbed them, but the noise of the rain that had begun to fall outside swallowed any sounds that he made. Now he just had five more stairs to go — “I’ve been waiting for you,” said Theodore, leaning on the wall of the landing, languidly peeling an apple. “For some reason, I had a feeling it might be you.” To be continued...
No one seemed to be around, so Gustav took a deep breath — and entered.

Buttigieg Wins Iowa THE PULSE: South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg emerged the victor in the Iowa caucuses. Buttigieg garnered 26.2% of the vote and 564 delegates, while Bernie Sanders got 26.1% of the vote and 562 delegates. Former Vice President Joe Biden finished a disappointing fourth behind Elizabeth Warren, with only 15.8% of the vote and 341 delegates. THE IMPACT: Buttigieg’s strong showing has thrust him into the limelight. Recent polling out of New Hampshire has him locked in a tight race with Bernie Sanders for the lead in the Granite State. Buttigieg is seeking to portray himself as a moderate candidate to the right of more radical candidates, such as Bernie
58 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / February 12, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. His strong showing is likely costing Joe Biden votes. Should Buttigieg’s surge result in a poor outcome for Biden in New Hampshire, it will likely erode Biden’s argument that he is the most electable candidate. The next primary state of South Carolina, with its large African-American population, is considered a must-win for Biden. Biden will need to make a strong stand in South Carolina to stay viable. The primary beneficiary of Biden’s poor performance is likely Michael Bloomberg. Bloomberg has stayed out of the early primary contests and is betting on big wins in the Super Tuesday primaries of March. If centrist Democrats begin to panic over Biden’s inability to win over voters, they may view Bloomberg as the most viable centrist candidate in the race, thereby creating a narrow pathway for Bloomberg to win the nomination.
THE STATE OF PLAY: Buttigieg will now begin to see a stronger focus on his policies and ideas. Buttigieg is a Harvard graduate and Rhodes Scholar. He served in the Navy and did a seven-month tour of duty in Afghanistan. Buttigieg portrays himself as a moderate, but most of his ideas are in line with his party’s liberal orthodoxy. He supports background checks on gun purchases, a carbon tax, and wants to increase taxes on the wealthiest Americans. However, he is opposed to the use of tariffs and supports boosting the defense budget. Buttigieg’s appeal to moderates is due mainly to his temperament and his military service. Buttigieg’s position on Israel is mixed. He has been critical of Israel’s plans to annex areas of the West Bank and has said that he would leverage aid to Israel to stop it from taking unilateral actions that would negatively affect the realization of a two-state solution. However, Buttigieg has vocally defended Israel’s right to defend itself and has placed the blame for the Palestinians’ predicament in Gaza on Hamas. Buttigieg also forcefully criticized Congresswoman’s Ilan Omar’s comments comparing Israel’s human rights record to Iran. Buttigieg is a strong supporter of the equality act, which is opposed by many religious groups who fear that it will erode religious liberties.
Senate Acquits President Trump THE PULSE: The Senate voted mostly along party lines
to acquit President Trump on both articles of impeachment. The lone senator to cross party lines was Mitt Romney (R-UT), who voted to convict the president on the charge of abuse of power. Romney is the first senator in American history to vote to convict a sitting president of his own party.
House by security officers. Former Ambassador Gordon Sondland was fired from his position as Ambassador to the European Union. Many have expressed concern over these actions. Lt. Col. Vindman is a recipient of the Purple Heart and served the United States of America valiantly. He was subpoenaed to testify and testified under oath to the truth as he saw it. The vindictive actions of President Trump will serve to instill fear in those who are employed by this administration. It will likely cause people who observe wrongdoing in this or any future administration to decline to report their concerns and to refuse to testify truthfully at potential hearings. According to reports, Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, and Martha McSally of Arizona tried to convince Trump to leave Sondland at his post, but to no avail. It is not the first time that Trump has used the powers of government to attempt to silence his critics. In August 2018, Trump revoked the security clearance of former CIA Director James Brennan because of Brennan’s vocal criticism of the Trump administration. It should be noted that the action against Brennan was unprecedented at the time. Previous administrations did not revoke the clearance of their critics. General Michael Flynn led chants of “lock her up” at Trump rallies, and yet did not have his clearance withdrawn.
Trump Approval Ratings Soar to His All-Time Best THE PULSE: The most recent Gallup poll has Trump’s approval rating at 49%, which is his all-time personal best. The poll results show the great divisions that are present in the country. Trump’s approval among Republicans is at 94%, but only 7% of Democrats approve of his performance. Among independents, his approval rating is at 42%.
THE IMPACT: President Trump was triumphant in
his post-acquittal comments. He publicly thanked the members of Congress who helped him and openly criticized those who crossed him. The fallout from the impeachment trial may be far-reaching. The trial served to energize the Republican base, and the Republican National Committee has raised substantial funds off of it. However, the acquittal has also put Republican senators, such as Susan Collins of Maine and Cory Gardner of Colorado, in unenviable positions. They are both locked in fierce reelection battles, and their opponents are seeking to use their acquittal votes against them. On the other end of the spectrum, Democratic Alabama Senator Doug Jones likely ceded any chance of reelection when he voted to convict President Trump. THE FALLOUT: Allies of President Trump fiercely attacked Senator Romney and his motives. The President reassigned Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman and his twin brother Yevgeny Vindman from their jobs at the National Security Council. Both were escorted out of the White
THE IMPACT: Trump’s improved numbers are likely
due in large part to the success of the economy. Additionally, Trump has achieved some notable successes with the passage of the USMCA and the signing of a stage-one trade deal with China. Trump has also shown that many of his decisions to buck conventional wisdom did not trigger the adverse effects that many predicted would ensue. Moving the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem did not result in widespread outrage in the Arab street. Killing Qasem Soleimani did not result in World War III, and placing tariffs on China did not sink America into recession. However, even at these record polling highs, approximately half the country does not approve of his job performance. This is likely due to his combative style and to the disapproval of some of his more controversial approaches to issues of national concern. Trump won the election in 2016 by narrowly winning key states. He must retain these voters to win reelection. These numbers are positive news for President Trump and will be a cause of anxiety for Democrats looking to replace him in 2020.

Best Chocolate Cupcakes
64 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / February 12, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Achieve the richest fudge-frosted cupcakes ever — and do so in just an hour! And the best part yet? No mixer required; both the batter and the frosting are one-bowl recipes. Top them with a colorful sprinkling of fun or with mini chocolate chips for a triple chocolate whopper! Yields 15 cupcakes
INGREDIENTS 1¼ cups flour
½ cup light brown sugar
⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa
1 egg plus 1 egg yolk, lightly beaten
1½ tsp. baking powder
⅓ cup liquid whip
½ tsp. baking soda
½ cup oil
½ tsp. salt
2 tsp. coffee granules
¾ cup sugar
¾ cup boiling water
FROSTING ½ stick margarine, melted
½ cup unsweetened cocoa
⅛ tsp. salt
¼ cup hot water
1½ cups confectioners’ sugar
1 T. corn syrup
DIRECTIONS 1.
Preheat oven to 350° and line muffin pans with baking cups.
2.
Whisk together flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl, and make a well in the center of the mixture. Add sugars, egg, egg yolk, whip and oil to flour mixture, and whisk in until just incorporated. Dissolve the coffee in the boiling water, add to batter, and whisk in until smooth. Fill each baking cup just over half full with batter.
3.
Bake cupcakes for 22 to 23 minutes. Remove from oven. Cool cupcakes for 10 minutes, then pop into the freezer for about 20 minutes to finish cooling.
4.
For the frosting, combine all ingredients in a medium bowl (I used a disposable 32-ounce container) and whisk until well combined. Whisk frosting one more minute, until smooth and glossy. Spread a spoonful of frosting over each cupcake. Decorate with your topping of choice.
5.
Store cupcakes in an airtight container in the refrigerator or freezer; bring to room temperature before serving.

Cream-Filled Cupcakes
Topped With a Chocolate Rose
68 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
These cupcakes are stunners! A fluffy vanilla cake, pastry cream filling, and beautiful chocolate ganache topping make this one spectacular cupcake that’s as delicious as it is beautiful!
CUPCAKES Use one recipe of the Fluffy Vanilla Cupcakes
CREAM FILLING 12 oz. whip 1 container ready-made vanilla custard
CHOCOLATE GANACHE TOPPING 13 oz. real chocolate chips 2 T. corn syrup (this gives the ganache a sheen) 1 cup liquid whip
DIRECTIONS 1.
Prepare one batch of Fluffy Vanilla Cupcakes.
2.
Cut out a half-inch circle from the center of each cupcake. (I used the back of a piping tip, but a corer or knife also works great.)
3.
Prepare the cream filling: Beat the whip until stiff, and gently fold in the custard. Pour it into a piping bag or large Ziploc bag with the corner snipped off. Fill the centers of the cupcakes with cream. (You will have leftovers that you can use on any other cake or with fruit.)
4.
Prepare the ganache: Place the chocolate chips, whip and corn syrup into a large bowl (I used a disposable 32-ounce container). Heat in the microwave, stirring frequently, until completely melted and combined. Place the chocolate ganache into the fridge, stir after a half-hour and then place back into the fridge for approximately another hour, or even a bit longer, until it feels firm enough to be piped. Pipe the ganache onto the filled cupcakes. I used the Ateco 844 tip (which is a large star tip) and started at the center, slowly moving outward around the circumference of the cupcake.
5.
Refrigerate until ready to use. You can also freeze these cupcakes and defrost overnight in the fridge.
*If the chocolate ganache becomes too firm, continue to microwave it in 5-second increments until it appears ready to be piped. If it’s too soft, refrigerate for a bit longer. *To simplify the decorating, allow the ganache to cool on your counter for just 10 to 15 minutes, and then blob a spoonful of the ganache on top of each cupcake.

Join us for a visit to Bohemia, current-day Czech Republic, as we go back in time to this hotspot for Jewish healing in years gone by. Resort towns in the area, such as Carlsbad, Marienbad, Franzensbad and Piestany were privileged to host a fair share of Yidden and gedolim during their heyday in the mid-1800s until World War II.

kind of Yid — for every kind of Yid can be sighted in the neighborhood these months. There is also a minyan for every sect, some imposing shuls built to serve the open Jewish community, and improvised rooms set up temporarily as batei midrash for the followers of various chassidic courts. You can find a mikvah, a beis hachaim and even Jewish hospitals — and Yiddish-language newspapers are sold at the stands. Elegant parks and comfortable lodgings make this an idyllic resort destination. But the core selling point are the bathhouses and hot mineral springs. They come here for healing and cures and to rest and relax without the day-to-day worries of life back home. From as far as Galicia and Russia, Austro-Hungary and Ger-

GEDOLIM WHO VISITED Resorts like Marienbad and Carlsbad were graced with the presence of the Gerrer Rebbe, zt”l, the Rebbe of Sadigur, zt”l, the Belzer Rav, zt”l, and the Satmar Rebbe, zt”l. These personalities often arrived with an entourage of followers. They walked through town in traditional attire: long suits, peyos and black hats. They certainly captured the attention of other guests, and interestingly, were rarely targeted negatively as a result.

During a visit to Marienbad in 1891, Mark Twain commented on the chassidish presence in town. “Almost the only striking figure is the Polish Jew. He is very frequent. He is tall and of grave countenance and wears a coat that reaches his ankle bones, and he has a little wee curl or two in front of each ear. He has a prosperous look, and seems to be as much respected as anybody.” Many close and unlikely relationships were formed in these resort spots between gedolim from various parts of Europe who might never have come together otherwise. The connection between Reb Aharon of Belz, zt”l, and the Imrei Emes of Gur, zt”l, had roots in Marienbad. Reb Elchonon Wasserman, zt”l, looked to spend as much time as possible in the Belzer Rav’s presence when they’d meet in Marienbad, recalling the esteem in which the Chofetz Chaim held the Belzer Rav at a convention in Warsaw. Reb Yehoshua of Belz once visited Piestany, and some local misnagdim mocked him. His son, Reb Yissachar Dov, was disturbed. He asked his father how it could be that people still did not see the advantage of chassidus and were so callous as to ridicule them. Reb Yehoshua replied that his son needn’t worry. “That was before I davened ‘Atah chonen l’adam da’as’ in Shemoneh Esrei. They’ve already done teshuvah.” They were still speaking when the Yidden came to ask forgiveness. Reb Yehoshua told them to travel to Belz. Years later, when repeating the story, the Reb Yehoshua of Belz pointed out some “yoshvim” in Belz. “They are descendants of those Yidden…” he said.

healing centers are subsidized and sponsored by large Jewish communities, like Vienna, Prague and Berlin, and by private benefactors as well, making treatments at the springs available to simple workers and tradesmen, too. The influx of Yidden — men, women and children — during the summer season transforms Carlsbad into an authentic “Jewish space,” with Yidden outnumbering gentile guests. During high season, Yidden are afforded friendly, cordial treatment by native and visiting gentiles. During the off-season winters, hostility is certainly more noticeable.
A Day at the Spa Many of the gedolim and guests have come to the resort towns dotting Bohemia on doctors’ orders. The mineral spa waters are renowned for their curative properties, both for those who drink and immerse in them. But it isn’t just the water itself… The experience begins with the journey to the “bader.” The change of scenery and distance from everyday concerns are the first part of this health-promoting experience. Without the distraction of domestic affairs or business worries, guests have an opportunity to really rest. Some even consider it inappropriate to read newspapers while regaining their health! Life in the city is rigorous, and many city Yidden seek to calm their nerves with the relaxing effects of the water. Doctors recommend a ritualized, synchronized daily routine that includes scheduled meals and no strenuous activities. Between treatments, visitors are encouraged to take short excursions and stroll the promenade and woods. For the rabbanim and rebbes who come, the relaxed HOT SPRING FOUNTAIN IN CARLSBAD

pace affords them more time to learn freely, undisturbed, between treatments. It also offers them the opportunity to meet with other gedolim, who are here for remedies too. Chassidim and talmidim who join their rebbe’s retreat strain to catch a glimpse of every interaction and bend low to listen in to the conversations of these great men. Even the “simple talk” and stories they share are interesting — not to mention watching the milchamta shel Torah they engage in. Many grab the opportunity to serve visiting gedolim while sipping from

THE CHASAM SOFER IN PIESTANY In the summertime, the Chasam Sofer visited Piestany for healing purposes. He wrote many teshuvos from there. Still, the Chasam Sofer viewed his visit as yissurim and a galus from his kehillah and yeshivah, all done simply for the sake of refuah. The Chasam Sofer would use the bathhouse privately, with no one else permitted entry while he was inside. The well was enclosed by heavy iron doors that were kept open all day, while the public came and went. Once, as the Chasam Sofer went in, the heavy doors closed on their own. It was humanly impossible to open the doors alone from inside. And no one outside knew that he was stuck inside. The Chasam Sofer realized he was in great danger. He immediately began to review his maasim and suddenly remembered that about one month before, Rav David Deutsch, a distinguished rav and the author of Ohel David, had passed away, and he hadn’t eulogized him. Chazal say that one who neglects to be maspid a talmid chacham is deserving of being buried alive. The Chasam Sofer pledged that if a miracle would happen and he would survive, he would deliver a hesped on the niftar. Suddenly, the doors opened on their own and the Chasam Sofer kept his promise.

The mineral springs found in these Bohemian resort towns are natural miracles, and the healing powers that Hashem conferred upon these fountains of blessings were already recognized as far back as the Middle Ages. The valuable waters contain a variety of minerals, sulphur and hydrogen sulphide, among other properties that heal and prevent many ailments. Drinking the water, bathing in it, and applying the mud treatments cures, soothes, remedies and restores vibrancy to many who come searching for it. The healing waters can get as hot as 70 degrees Celsius (158 degrees Fahrenheit). With as many as 60 different treatments, including balneotherapy, physiotherapy, mechanotherapy and kinesiotherapy available, visitors follow individual therapy plans upon the recommendations of local doctors. Mud baths characteristically relieve pain and improve mobility. Some come for beauty treatments, too. Common conditions that benefit from the spa waters include musculoskeletal diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, arthrosis, osteoporosis and back pain. People come for rehab following accidents and surgeries and after suffering injury to the central nervous system. Issues with nervous components and diabetes have been treated here, too. Carlsbad became known as the leading spa for “sugar,” with the composition of its springs favorable for diabetes, long since labeled a “Jewish disease,” and Piestany is famously known for healing rheumatism.

The healing springs in Bohemia are formally mentioned in writing as early as 1549, but people already took advantage of their curative powers even earlier, during the Middle Ages. The first bathhouses in Piestany were constructed in 1778. In 1813, they suffered from flooding and were eventually rebuilt in 1820. Tucson, Arizona: a land of warm desert sand, towering cacti and panoramic views. For some busy New Yorkers, the promise of sunsoaked days whispers in their ears as they rush through the blustery streets, telling them it’s time to get away, to defrost a bit. For others, it’s the hope of healing that beckons. Like many others before them, they’ll board a plane, often with children in tow, to try out the Arizona air, praying for relief for whatever ails them.

hese wintertime visitors are nicknamed “snowbirds” by the locals, referencing the bird-like tendency of out-of-state visitors to flee the cold weather back home and temporarily settle down where it’s warm. Luckily for heimishe snowbirds, there’s a cozy nest waiting for them in Tucson, replete with other “birds of the feather.” Welcome to Brauner’s Resort.
“It started nearly 50 years go, when the Satmar Rebbe, zt”l, came out here with a bunch of chassidim. After being here for about two weeks, the Rebbe said that it was time for him to go home, but that

everyone else should remain. Aside from the Rebbe and his gabbai, the group stayed.” Mrs. Brauner, proprietor of Brauner’s Resort, is pleasant and forthcoming, happy to share with
me the history of the place she loves. “As the Rebbe advised, my fatherin-law stayed here, at first in a rented two-bedroom apartment, where he hosted the davening, and then in a house he bought. It was about 41 years ago that he bought our first property in Tucson, which came with two accessory houses. Since then, we’ve been building and updating. We now have six apartment buildings with about 30 apartments in total.” As for the guests who come, they hail from all over, and from all walks of frum life. “It started out with mostly elderly visitors who came for the warmer weather, but as people realized that the air quality here is so amazing, and the environment has such an impact on health, people started to come for all sorts of conditions, ranging from asthma to psoriasis to arthritis. It’s mostly a younger crowd now, with children.” Many people who have come for therapeutic purposes leave feeling so much better, causing them to spread the news far and wide. “Recently I’ve even received calls from people in Toronto and Golders Green!” Mrs. Brauner tells me. Fortunately for people who travel from afar, everything is available at the resort aside from personal effects. “We have people who come and bring nothing more than the clothes on their backs,” Mrs. Brauner says, telling me that all apartments are equipped with kosher kitchens and that the on-site grocery rivals any corner store in New York, fully stocked with all the basics, including meat and even ready, refrigerated meals. For families who come with hopes of healing, this is a tremendous boon, allowing them to focus their energies on spending time in the great outdoors, imbibing the fresh air and catching those
rays of sunshine. Even yearround local residents frequent the store during the open season for a taste of heimishe food. Nearby, there are many lovely outdoor activities for those on the go, including the possibility of hiking in the mountains or exploring the breathtaking Sabino Canyon. Another popular attraction is a beautiful zoo, and there’s plenty of shopping as well, for those in need of retail therapy. Though Tucson is technically a city, the air quality is classified as good, with low pollution and humidity. Many asthmatics find that breathing is less laborious there. As one visitor told me, “For the first time in years, I feel that I can breathe without thinking about every breath I take. It’s as if an elephant has been removed from my chest; I can get out and enjoy life!” Another visitor, a mother of a young child with asthma, told me that her pediatrician recommended a permanent move because her child can go for extended periods of time in Tucson without flaring up,unlike at home. The truth is, attempts have
KNOW BEFORE YOU GO “I can’t guarantee that everyone who comes out to Tucson will experience healing for their condition. Very many do, but some don’t,” Mrs. Brauner says. This puzzle of who is helped by what, and when, confounds so many people around the world. To that end, it’s important to recognize that though geographical and weather features of various locales can impact our bodies in significant ways, we may not always achieve the result we’re hoping for when visiting a place that is touted to be blessed with properties of healing. Sometimes we won’t know why others achieve healing while we don’t, but there are instances in which the answer to that question is hidden in the diagnosis. Getting the correct diagnosis before attempting any treatment can be paramount. For example, while Seasonal Affective Disorder (winter depression) can be alleviated by a vacation in a sunny spot or even light therapy, other mental health conditions may dangerously worsen if conventional treatments are neglected in favor of trying nature first. Likewise, certain skin conditions run the risk of actually worsening upon sun exposure, rather than being helped by it. Though true eczema and psoriasis have historically responded favorably to the sun, the current generation is full of photosensitive misdiagnosed “eczema” and “psoriasis” patients who’ve actually developed steroid damage through using these powerful medications in a wrongful manner. These patients frequently flare when exposed to the sun due to vascular sensitivities, and often feel that they are “allergic” to the sun or heat. Such patients would find themselves very uncomfortable under the Arizona sun. Any time there is a question about what type of treatment a person should undergo, it is important to have an accurate understanding of what their body is afflicted with. Once they have a correct diagnosis, appropriate treatments are easier to come by. And for many, a vacation in Tucson is exactly what the doctor ordered!

been made at establishing a yearround community, but so far, all have fallen through. As Mrs. Brauner says, “It’s not so simple. You can’t just start a community with ten families; you need much more than that. You need a school and a cheder and other things, as well.” When it comes to off-season need, however, the resort has been opened from time to time for individual families. Though the season officially begins Zos Chanukah and ends a week before Purim, there have been requests for groups to stay over Pesach or even in the middle of the summer. People who come just to vacation typically stay for shorter stints during the main season, while those who come for symptom relief for various conditions are encouraged to stay for three weeks or more, as it can take time to see change taking place. Some skin conditions, such as cases of true eczema and psoriasis, have historically been known to typically respond well to sun exposure, though it takes time for clearing to happen. But if and when that clearing comes, it can last for extended periods of time, allowing visitors to take the relief they gain back home with them. “Last year there was a baby with

bad eczema who came out and ended up spending seven weeks here, his family staying over Purim, even after everyone else had left. By the time he went home he was clear, and he still is clear, even now.” Some forms of mild mental health conditions, too, can respond well to the sunny nature of Tucson. Winter blues and cabin fever can
relaxed,” Mrs. Brauner explains to me. “Everyone greets each other and is very polite. Even the city bus driver always has a cheery greeting for the passengers.” In a tongue-incheek manner, Mrs. Brauner tells me that it is easy to pick out who the New York drivers are on the street… In general, those who come to the resort are treated to a country-like atmosphere in the middle of winter. There is a private playground for the children, and the women often gather around for a good shmooze. Over in the beis midrash, the men have the chance to take part in a full day of learning, complete with shiurim. Brauner’s is especially honored to host the chashuveh dayan from Monroe every winter. “People who used to go to Palm Springs started frequenting our resort,” Mrs. Brauner says, “because taking out a house in Palm Springs

Even for the average, healthy person who just needs a break from the same-old, same-old, a vacation in Tucson can do wonders. One woman who goes annually tells me that she waits for her trip all year, because it gives her that rest and mental lift she needs to get through the daily grind in the following months. “The world is slower here, more
is a hassle in regard to kashering and ensuring one has enough food. Here, guests have all their heimishe needs provided for, without the hassle.” Not everyone needs a refuah, baruch Hashem, and not everyone’s a snowbird. But should any of us need what Brauner’s provides, it’s great to know that there’s a home away from home for all of us, just a flight away.

Myth #1: Steroids are evil! Steroids, also known as cortisone, are powerful hormones that can be safe when used correctly. However, they are most commonly used in a dangerous manner. This can cause rashes to worsen and a new, terrible condition to develop, called Red Skin Syndrome (RSS). Children are especially at risk.
Myth #2: Natural skin care products are safer than doctorprescribed medications. Many products marketed as “natural” contain unlabeled and very potent steroids. Many people have been harmed, thinking a product is natural when it is actually tainted with unlabeled medications.
Myth #3: But I used so little! How can my rash be steroid-induced?!
Myth #4: I haven’t used steroids in months! My rash can’t be Red Skin Syndrome!
When used incorrectly, steroids can cause damage in an extremely short period of time, especially when used on areas of thin skin, such as the face, armpits or groin. Young children have especially thin skin and can suffer damage almost immediately.
In most cases, the symptoms do not become severe soon after stopping treatment, so many people don’t link their worsening symptoms with previous steroid usage. The symptoms significantly worsen as the drug washes out of the body over the course of months. At that point, spreading of the rash is common, causing redness to invade surrounding areas. Flaking, oozing, and burning are key symptoms. Real eczema is never as severe as RSS, but because it occurs in the place of the original rash, many people think their eczema is just getting worse.

When our pediatrician assured me that my baby's dry skin just needed a dab of Vaseline, I believed him. But when baby Simi's face grew coarser and coarser, I believed my motherly instincts more. Simi was born in the winter, and by the time Pesach rolled around, her skin was so rough I didn't need a doctor to diagnose it as eczema. Thus began our journey on the tumultuous roller coaster that is eczema. I first consulted with an allergist, having been told that facial eczema is generally food-related. After testing the baby for the five basic allergens, the allergist concluded that my baby was only mildly allergic to raw egg whites. He advised me to stay off egg whites for four weeks and check for improvement. This coincided with Pesach, and I remember being hysterical about that. Well, today I've come a long way. I didn't enjoy ice cream or scrambled eggs over Pesach, but Simi's

skin did not clear up. So the search went on. A cousin recommended a woman who was said to identify allergens more accurately. There I received my gift: a megillah of prohibited foods and the chirpy consultant's assurance that "you'll figure it out, it will get easier." No more wheat, dairy, potatoes, spices, eggs, onions, garlic and soy, to name very few. Sometimes I literally went hungry, and things did not get easier so fast. That summer, we were going to a new bungalow colony where my
husband would be a melamed. Our home for those two months was a little cabin literally in the middle of the woods, with foxes for company. The advantage at this bungalow colony was my disadvantage: We got food from the main kitchen every day. I didn't have a gas range or oven and couldn't cook on my own (though later I did get myself an electric grill). I also tried all kinds of formulas so I could bottle-feed Simi, but she absolutely refused bottles. So there I was, a hungry mother constantly holding a crying baby. able. It was summer, my children were kept busy in day camp, and I didn't have to cook for my family. I had to protect Simi from scratching herself, so my day was a carousel of holding the baby, keeping her arms down, and wiping the blood off her face. She woke up every morning in a pool of blood — and she often slept in my bed, because I had to hold her hands down at night so she wouldn’t scratch herself in her sleep. When she moved, I woke up and grabbed her hands, and then she woke up, and we'd often be up for hours. My sisters in Eretz Yisroel knew well how my nights looked; they kept me company throughout those long hours. Simi's face made a cute baby into anything but. All you saw were two huge blue eyes popping out of a hor-

ribly raw face. Her eyelids, behind her ears, in her ears — no area was spared. Desperate that I was, I then consulted with another alternative medicine practitioner (please check with your rav about the permissibility of any such practice), who declared that 60% to 70% of the problem was the laundry detergent I used. She recommended I change to Arm & Hammer’s Free & Clear, which is free of dyes and harsh substances. And the good news: On her plan, I was allowed white wheat, butter, cherry tomatoes, and many other foods previously barred from my diet. That very week, on Rosh Chodesh Av, I sat down to a lavish feast: fresh onion rolls with butter and a big salad with cherry tomatoes. Finally! I could actually enjoy some of the world’s bounty. Not for long. Four hours later, after feeding Simi, the nightmare
bloodcurdling howls. Oh, did that salad exact a heavy price. It was all too much, too fast. I realized I shouldn't have swallowed the hypothesis whole and gone on to enjoy myself. Maybe I could have tried only one of the foods and tracked the reaction. But my other lesson was comforting, at least. I had been doing something right until now. My impossible diet was keeping the condition from reaching its very worst. All of my trouble had not been for nothing. I did switch my laundry detergent, and that Erev Tisha B'Av found me washing all the linens and towels. Simi was always everywhere, in everyone's beds and arms, so I made sure to wash everything with the new detergent. With this change, Simi's skin was no longer totally raw; obviously, it was doing her some good. There is no such a thing as a quick fix. Nevertheless, everyone around me seemed to have the answers, and I got plenty of advice and comments from random people. I've been informed by a doctor in hospital corridors (where I was visiting to treat a different child) that my child has a bad case of eczema and that I should

I shudder remembering how Simi threw herself from pain, thrashing like crazy, desperate to just get out of her skin. I couldn't even hold her; she flew out of my arms. I spent the night bawling along with Simi. She slept for a few seconds, then jerked awake with

do A, B and C. Really, now — I was very aware of my child's condition and we were past all those “remedies.” A friend who has a child with eczema said she would tie a bib on her baby with the announcement: Don't offer advice, offer help. I've been told about "amazing" and "lifechanging" treatments, which when verified, turned out quite underwhelming. My greatest fear was infection. I've heard horror stories about eczema infections that have led to long hospital stays and heavy meds. I obsessively cared for any open wound with my own go-to remedy: MR cream and powder for burns (though this should not be taken as professional medical advice). Also, since my child was a baby and we could hold her hand and prevent her from opening wounds, we had a better chance of preventing them. Baruch Hashem, Simi was not on antibiotics even once. At that point, after the change in detergent, things were slightly better, but they were still not good. My home was totally dysfunctional; there was nothing going on except holding Simi's hands down. And when things got this desperate, I found myself in a whole new place. Things previously waved away as "out of the question" suddenly became an option. We'd heard over those chaotic months that Davos, Switzerland, was a well-known destination for

At night, I would bundle up Simi and have her sleep on the porch so she'd get all the healing air she could. At Etania, kosher bread and challah are available for ordering, but if the mashgiach would forget to turn on the oven at the bakery one night, there would be no bread the next day. There is no official kosher supermarket in Davos; when local Jews shop, they carry a list of the products approved by rabbanim.

One day, I discovered a supermarket with a kosher section. I eagerly went to check it out and saw four items: grape juice, wafers, chrein and ice pops. I grabbed two $4 ice pops off the shelves for myself and my daughter, and we sat outside in the rain contentedly sucking this kosher treat! Two weeks after I arrived in Davos, the rest of the family finally joined me. The sun cooperated as well, and stunning weather welcomed my husband and starry-eyed kids. My three-year-old proudly showed them around "our" place. For my children, this was beyond anything they could dream of. Each

As a mother of little children, it was a rare treat to sit in at most of the tefillos. The crowd was completely heimish, but varied: There were chassidim of all kinds, Litvish folks from Bnei Brak, and Sefardim. After Rosh Hashanah, we took some more family trips. When my sisters asked what activities we were planning for chol hamoed, I told them that we enjoyed these trips every day! Simi's skin didn't improve immediately. For the first three weeks of our stay in Davos, there was no change. After that, her skin was not yet good, but it was not at its worst. It was just before Sukkos — when another mother looked at Simi and asked me, "You came for this?" — that I took a look at my baby and realized she was looking better! While not smooth, her face didn't look re-
pulsive anymore. Change is never quick or straightforward. Some days she did better, some days worse. When I sat in the playroom one day, an English woman sitting near me looked at my baby and said, "She's not looking good today. Were you eating apples?" I looked at her in shock. How did she know that I'd been relying on lots of apples to supplement my meager diet? "Apples are no good for her," she claimed. When Simi broke out again, my new friend said it was a grain I'd
eaten. I argued that I didn't eat any grains — until I remembered the barley in my soup. This English native was very on top of me, helping me tweak my diet. Sukkos was an experience. This is probably what it was like in the shtetl: Families celebrating yom tov together. All of the sukkahs — graciously provided by Etania's management — stood on the large lawn. One family began to sing zemiros; the next joined. One father began to tell a story; the other families were silent and listened.
We were all in it together, facing similar circumstances. It was a bit like a support group, and I appreciated the power of being "in it" together. We shared stories, experiences and ideas. The atmosphere was beautiful and supportive. And then Sukkos — and our stay in Davos — ended. As we boarded the airplane on the morning of Isru Chag, Simi's face was clear and baby-smooth. I leaned back in my seat and exhaled in relief. An hour later, her cheeks sported two bright red patches. My pulse quickened. For
Etania and the Davos Solution The healing properties of the air in Davos were discovered in the 1800s by a doctor who looked into the curious phenomenon that the people in Davos were not afflicted by tuberculosis, which raged at the time. Many ill people, including Jews, came to Davos in the hope of being cured. However, some came so sick that they unfortunately passed away there, as testified by the Jewish cemetery in that area. Davos soon became popular — and expensive. A charity committee in Zurich decided to open a facility on the Davos mountains, named Etania, to host the ill for affordable prices. This establishment ended up serving as a haven for people escaping the horrors of the Holocaust, as well, and also facilitated the healing of the many wounded, broken souls after the war. People stayed there for as long as two years until they were strong enough to venture out into the world again. The Etania lobby showcases old pictures of people sleeping on the building porches to take full advantage of the heal-
ing air of Davos. In the late 1900s, once tuberculosis thankfully faded into history, Etania became virtually empty. By the 1990s, it was a forsaken, neglected property that cost more to maintain than its services could cover, and its owners wanted to sell it. Now, however, Etania is back on the map, and many families searching for relief from allergic conditions visit each spring and fall. The air in Davos has no dust mites, very low allergen levels, little pollution and beneficial sun rays, and these factors can sometimes enable the skin to heal.

this I spent six weeks in Davos? We disembarked with a redfaced baby, a child with fever, and two vomiting kids. I thought I would lose it right there. But as we headed home, I remembered hearing that things could get worse before they got better. The first week Simi's skin was very irritable, but by three weeks after arriving home, her skin began to clear up. It was unbelievable to watch the foods I ate show up on Simi's skin! If I kept to my regimen carefully, things were good. If I cheated, I paid the price, until things improved again after about ten days. But unlike before, when my diet only curbed total disaster, after our trip it really kept her complexion clear. When we spent Shabbos at my parents' one week, I realized I’d forgotten my spelt challah. I took the risk and tasted a small piece of my mother's wheat challah at the Shabbos day meal and seudah shelishis. I waited one day, two days, and nothing happened. So I learned
that when I'm desperate, very small cheats can sometimes wiggle their way through the system! Dairy, however, is a big no-no; there are almost immediate flare-ups with the smallest nibbles. Is it a pain to keep to this prohibitive diet? Yes, especially when I'm not home, and there's absolutely nothing for me to eat. But on the whole, I’ve discovered reservoirs of strength I never knew I had, and this did become the new normal. Today, I do spend time baking, because if I

crave good food, I'll do something crazy like bake some spelt kokosh cake — just for myself! People like to comfort me with claims that in this day and age you can find "everything" in spelt or egg-free varieties. I’d like to argue that point. There is very little out there that conforms to my complete diet, and whatever does — well, go splurge on a $7 spelt challah just for yourself every week. I'm grateful to Hashem that we’ve come this far and that my baby is comfortable and mostly eczema-free. I don't know what the future holds. Most Davos veterans report that relief usually lasts several months, and then it's back to the mountains again. It is encouraging to note that eczema and allergic conditions often disappear as the child matures. However, some eczema sufferers do find permanent relief after one visit to Davos — and by strictly keeping away from any triggers, if they’re lucky enough to know what they are — and I sorely hope Simi will be one of them. Please note: The protagonist of this story did not travel to Davos as a participant of any treatment program.

נפלה עטרת ראשינו
The Navi says, "נפלה עטרת ראשינו אוי לנו כי חטאנו- The crown of our head has fallen; woe unto us for we have sinned” (Eichah 5:16). Due to our sins and lack of kedusha, the crown on our heads – the beautiful mitzvah of kisuy sa’aros – has fallen. The crown is, however, not broken. It is up to us to pick it up and return it once again to its rightful place.

Let the Games Begin Are you ready? Let’s go! The tools required for this game are: a timer, a pen and a paper — and if possible, more than one player. Since we’ll be heading into the kids’ domain this week, we’re approaching it with the same excitement kids usually do at the outset of a game. Note that the duration of the “game” will vary, depending on the amount of rounds you need to go (i.e., the amount of rooms involved). So let’s keep our energy level up with fun and cooperative players. The cool thing about this game is that it can be played in a singleplayer version, as well. The rules will be slightly different, but the end results will be much the same — perhaps more rounds and more plays, but still a whole lot of fun! Pesach season is a great opportunity to introduce the kids to housework. Besides the extra pair of hands that’ll give you, it’s a prime opportunity to educate them on a subject that will serve them well in the future. It is up to us to show them that there is fun to be had here. If we turn it into drudgery, then

any kid with an ounce of sense will run for the hills. So instead, let’s teach them the easy, effective and enjoyable approach. Of all the education you ensure they receive, the ability to take to their tasks with gusto and ease is likely one of the most important. So let the games begin! The “game” can be played in a variety of ways. Each “player” can choose one area that they believe they can complete in the allotted amount of time, or the tasks can be picked from an actual deck of cards. The children can “earn points” by tallying the number of tasks they’ve completed, but even if no points are awarded, this setup is a fun way to get the kids involved in housework while teaching them that this can be a great opportunity to spend time with, and do something for, other family members. The varying game options are many, but the most important tool you can employ is a happy attitude. Kids are natural mimics, and if you approach this with joy, so will they. Besides, an upbeat attitude always makes our work easier.
Sunday
Today’s task will focus on all the kids’ dressers. (The closets are being done next week.) Start by writing a list, itemizing every drawer involved — so that you will get to enjoy that fulfilling feeling of crossing your accomplishments off the list. February 16
Many of us frequently complain about the lack of closet space. Now, I’m not going to have the gumption to entirely disagree with you, since chances are that I’ve never visited your home, but may I anyhow suggest that you take a closer look at the dresser in question and note how many items aren’t being used? Now’s the time to give yourself and the kids the gift of comfort and space. Side bonus: Putting away laundry will be so much easier when the closet isn’t stuffed with unnecessary and unused items.
Monday
The official focus will be the toy box and games. If you have a designated playroom, then that is what we are focusing on today. The actual toy closet, though, will be done alongside the other closets next week. February 17
Even cleaning the toys, when approached with the right attitude, can be part of funtime: •
Have your kids wash down the big toys with damp, soapy rags. Supply them with old toothbrushes and Q-tips and let them go to town!
•
Smaller toys like Clics, Lego, Playstix, etc. can be zipped into a mesh bag and washed in the dishwasher, or washing machine on a gentle cycle. To drown out the inevitable banging, and to protect your machine, add washable stuffed animals to this load.
•
Place dolls inside a pillowcase and add them to your next towel or linen load. Wash on a regular cycle. This can do wonders for most dolls, though I’d recommend skipping the delicate ones, as they don’t fare as well in the washing machine.
Remember: Once your toys and games are cleaned, they can still be played with in a chometz-free zone. Toy rotation is a wise approach year-round. It makes daily cleanup easier, minimizes the pre-Pesach workload, and adds an element of excitement during children’s playtime. Here’s how you go about it: Once you’ve cleaned all toys, decide on which will be put out of reach and which will be played with in the current rotation. With too many choices, nothing looks appealing. Toy rotation will give the kids the opportunity to enjoy what they have, without being overwhelmed by too many options. Set up the toy rotation by dividing your toy and game collections into two or more parts and rotating the “on duty” toys every few months, or even once yearly!

PESACH CLEANING
Tuesday
WEEK 7
OF THE EIGHT-WEEK COUNTDOWN
Wednesday
Today we’re going to thoroughly wash down the baby’s crib. To make quick work of this task, a super-efficient approach would be to “wear” two clean cotton socks on your hands. One can be dampened with a mild detergent and the other should be dry.
This task will require a second pair of hands. Thankfully, if there are kids’ rooms to deal with, I’m suspecting that those helpful hands, baruch Hashem, exist.
If you don’t have a crib, look around the rooms and see what other tasks you can perhaps finish up, or “borrow” from another day.
Like in the master bedroom last week, strip the bed linen and wash down the bed frames prior to vacuuming and flipping the mattress.
February 18
February 19
Thursday
Utilizing the miracle mop, let’s freshen the walls with a quick wash. The “sock gloves” mentioned by the crib are great for woodworks, too. For scuff marks, the magic eraser is your best bet. February 20
Friday
Let’s finalize our time in this zone with a thorough washup of windows, sills, shades, curtains, light fixtures and lamps. February 21
Sunday February 23

Junior Works of Art Our desire for a spacious and clean room might seem like we’re discouraging creativity. By forcing the kids to get rid of their artistic creations (whether Clics, Playmags, drawings, or other arts and crafts), we give them the message that these objects rank lower on our list of priorities than a clean home. The simplest and most powerful way to demonstrate that you value your budding artists’ work is by taking photos of their creations and storing them in photo album “portfolios.” This way you can institute the policy of dismantling toys every evening, conveying the message that the kids’ creativity is admired, yet their room still needs to be clean.

to try to stick to a food budget of $500 a month. My new method is this: Every Motzei Shabbos, I take inventory of what’s left in my freezer and pantry from the previous week, and I create a menu using those ingredients. This dramatically cuts down on waste for a couple of reasons: 1. I repurpose leftovers as different recipes. 2. Because I have a meal plan, I only buy what I need for those meals, instead of just getting whatever I see in the grocery. As a side bonus, I don’t find myself stuck without essential ingredients while I’m cooking, so that’s working out great! I also started to plan cheaper suppers in general. We rarely eat chicken during the week anymore, and when we do, it’s in creative recipes using the chicken I remove from the soup bones. (After I cook a big pot of chicken soup, I freeze the chicken from the bones in small containers.) There are so many things I’m learning to make from those! Shawarma, meat pizza, chicken salad, pasta with chicken and pesto, and my favorite: chicken gnocchi with sauce and scallions. It does take some time to pick the chicken off the bones, but I find it’s not all that bad, especially considering what yummy dishes they end up as!

I find that people who go slower often get burned-out before they make any real progress, so speed is crucial.
When I want to make fish for supper, I buy frozen tilapia — $4 for a bag of six pieces, as opposed to $14.99 per pound of more expensive fish. (I know it’s not as healthy as Atlantic salmon, but it won’t kill us to eat it once every week or two). We also started eating more eggs instead of dairy (it’s cheaper than cheese), and more vegetarian proteins instead of meat or dairy. (The best thing is that my kids get so excited now when I serve them chicken! Who ever would have thought?) For breakfast and lunch, I started serving sandwiches on plain bread instead of bagels. It’s delicious toasted, and so much cheaper! The kids eat oatmeal or eggs, or cereal and milk (we try to get the cheaper brands). I buy the large yogurts instead of the single-serve, and I make granola myself instead of getting the readymade ones (you can make six times the amount for the same price!). Same goes for tuna, egg salad, sushi, blintzes, chickpeas and almost everything else. Yes, it takes time — there’s a reason they charge so much! But you can really stretch a dollar far doing that. Menachem and I also take leftovers for lunch, instead of just leaving it to rot in the fridge until it’s spoiled enough to throw out. Our Shabbos food has changed a lot too. We stopped buying salmon plus gefilte fish; we just choose one each week. No use wasting half of it. Our chicken is either just plain chicken on the bone, or one of the fancy recipes I make out of the repurposed soup bones. We stopped putting
flanken in our cholent and use chicken or turkey instead. We cut our food budget down to what we consider an extreme, but after all those changes, we’re still eating surprisingly well! Here’s what a typical menu in our home looks like now: SUNDAY: Shabbos leftovers, or French toast
and fruits or veggies MONDAY: lentil soup with chickpeas (great
affordable protein!), bread and roasted zucchini TUESDAY: shawarma (made out of the chicken from the soup bones), pita, hummus and Israeli salad WEDNESDAY: rakott krumpli (a Hungarian dish made with potatoes, eggs, and cheese — very filling and super cheap, especially if I top it with only a bit of cheese) and vegetable salad THURSDAY: potato kugel, farfel, chicken soup
and chickpeas Overall, It’s been working great! So far, I’ve been spending less than $100 a week (!), plus a little bit more for last-minute Shabbos shopping. Way to go!
To be continued...

How Do You Host? 4. WHAT KIND OF FOOD AND AMENITIES DO YOU LEAVE OUT FOR GUESTS?
1. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT DROP-IN GUESTS? I have a pristine guest room all ready for whoever needs a place to stay. As long as the guest is happy to come, I’m happy to have them — but it might mean I’ll be changing linen while they’re standing in the hallway! Last-minute guests are a nightmare!
2. WHAT IS YOUR PREFERENCE IN REGARD TO GUESTS HELPING OUT? I like to give my guests the royal treatment; they aren’t allowed to lift a finger! Isn’t it more comfortable when the guests feel at home? I let them help me serve meals and clean up.
Bottled water and cups Water and light snacks A whole welcome package including water, snacks, magazines, etc. A welcome package and various toiletries, in case they forgot something at home I tell my guests that “my house is your house” and give them full access to everything.
5. IF YOUR GUESTS WOULD LIKE TO GIFT YOU, WHAT DO YOU PREFER MOST? A fruit or chocolate platter or other nice dessert Flowers Wine A toy for the kids A serving dish or something else pretty for the home
3. WHAT DO YOU PREFER GUESTS DO WITH THEIR LINEN?
A handwritten note of appreciation
Make the beds nicely and go on their merry way. I’ll wash the linen before the next guests arrive.
6. WHAT’S ONE THING YOU WISH YOUR GUESTS WOULD KNOW?
Strip the linen and leave it on the beds; it makes my life so much easier!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
However they leave the room is fine, as long as they were comfortable being here!

On Being the Guest 1. DO YOU FIND BEING A GUEST STRESSFUL?
3. DO YOU ALWAYS BRING A GIFT WHEN YOU ARE HOSTED?
No. I make myself right at home and enjoy myself.
Of course! I really appreciate the work a host puts into preparing for our arrival.
It’s stressful to pack and repack, but while I’m a guest, I really enjoy myself.
If it’s family I’m staying with, and I stay there often, I’ll buy a bigger gift after coming a few times rather than a small gift each time.
Yes. Making sure my kids don’t act too wild and break something or bother anyone keeps me constantly on edge.
I’m deeply appreciative, but I can’t always bring a gift.
I’m only uncomfortable if I have to share a bathroom with the family.
Yikes! I didn’t realize gifts were expected! 2. DO YOU MIND HELPING OUT YOUR HOST? Not at all! After they worked so hard to prepare for me, I’m more than happy to lend a hand when possible!
4. WHICH TWO ITEMS DO YOU APPRECIATE THE MOST WHEN YOU’RE A GUEST? A well-stocked bathroom A Shabbos lamp
I wish I were able to help more, but I feel uncomfortable doing so in someone else’s house.
Seforim A clock
I’m always busy watching my kids! How can I possibly help out?
Spare hangers A full-length mirror
I don’t think it’s fair that I’m expected to help out after all the stress of packing and coming!
A sheitel head Negel vasser

Hot springs are heated by water that rises from deep within the Earth’s crust, where temperatures soar. Some hot springs are deliciously warm, but others are too hot to safely immerse in. Hot springs that are found in volcanic areas often reach boiling point. The water from hot springs is commonly viewed as being very therapeutic due to the high mineral content frequently found in them. This is because waters that rise from inside the earth pass through multiple layers of earth and pick up minerals along the way. Despite potential health benefits, hot spring immersion does come with an element of risk. Thermophiles are heatloving organisms that thrive in hot springs. Some of them can cause serious illness or fatality. For this reason, developed hot springs usually contain treated water, ensuring a safe dip. In untreated bodies of water, it is recommended to avoid immersing one’s face or to wear nose clips, as the nasal cavity is the prime route that certain dangerous organisms enter the body. There are 1,661 listed hot springs in America.

The hot springs at Yellowstone National Park are, for the most part, too hot to touch. In fact, warning signs have been posted and boardwalks have been built to keep tourists contained. Sometimes, though, the foolish are drawn to the unique coloring of the hot springs and get too close… In this case, it always pays to follow the rules!
Turkey has a collection of especially beautiful hot springs named Pamukkale, which translates to “Cotton Castle.” The gorgeous springs in their limestone basins feed one into another in this multitiered wonder.

Chaudes-Aigues, France, lays claim to having the hottest hot springs in Europe. The hottest hot spring in their town is called the Source du Par and reaches a whopping 179 degrees, just a bit under boiling point! Bear in mind that a temperature of 150 degrees can cause burns in most people in less than two seconds.
The Waimangu Cauldron in New Zealand is also known as Frying Pan Lake in reference to its near-boiling temperatures and the steam that rises from it.
There are more than 30 natural hot springs near Chaudes-Aigues, and locals have learned how to harness their power. Using the aid of gravity and simple wood pipes, spring water is delivered to their homes, providing them with heat and hot water.
It’s not just humans who love a good soak in warm water; the Japanese macaques who live at the Jigokudani Monkey Park in Japan have decided that a warm soak makes for a great day. As the story goes, the macaques had been raiding local farms and were in danger of being eliminated by farmers. To bait them away from the farms, owners of a Japanese inn who were fond of the monkeys began placing apples in a valley where there were hot springs. When winter came, the ruse began to work, and the monkeys came to eat the apples. Some of the apples had fallen into the hot springs, though, and one young monkey fell in while trying to retrieve one. He became scared and scrambled out. But then it happened again, and he realized he’d chanced upon a good thing! Soon there were monkeys lounging out in the hot springs, munching on apples‌ Ahh, the good life! These days, tourists from around the world visit the park to peek at the soaking monkeys.

Have you ever wondered about the following? Why don’t we call up two brothers to the Torah? Why do we leave shul by Yizkor? Why don’t we give the same name to two siblings?
OPPORTUNITY
Hint. Avoiding an Ayin Horah is much about not attracting undue attention to ourselves.
You guessed. These reason behind these practices, all of which are accepted by Halacha, is to avoid an Ayin Horah.
HCS is seeking a young, energetic male to work in our Boro Park Day Hab with developmentally disabled men.
So yes, we definitely do much to avoid Ayin Horah, but in a sense our caution has fallen prey to its popularity. The actions we take to avoid Ayin Horah are such an accepted part of our life that we fail realize why we do it.
