DRINK WITH CARE Fact #1
Fact #2
Drinking on Purim is a mitzvah. So is ונשמרתם מאד לנפשותיכם
Medications and alcohol don’t mix. That includes vitamins too.
Fact #3
Fact #4
Alcohol tolerance differs from person to person. Watch how the alcohol affects you, not others.
Drinking impairs your bodily functions, including your ability to breathe normally. This can be fatal.
Tip #1
Tip #2
Tip #3
Parents: Do not let your underage child drink. His body simply can’t handle it and the danger is worse.
Should someone become intoxicated, make sure they drink lots of water.
Drink at least 8 cups of water a day for the days leading up to purim to help your body tolerate alcohol.
Tip #4
Tip #5
Tip #6
Do not drink and drive. When someone start drinking, take away their car keys immediately.
If someone is unresponsive and/or can’t breathe, call Hatzolah immediately.
Keep tabs on your overall alcoholic intake. Remember that shnapps has more alcohol, even in smaller amounts.

MAZEL ADAR DAGIM (Re: Issue 24) Was I the only reader who noticed that the Boggle and survey winners announced in last week’s paper were families by the name of Fisch, Fischman and Fischman? Seems the mazel of the month really stood them in good stead! Y.R. THE BORO PARK VIEW RESPONDS: We actually noticed this very interesting occurrence, and it surely was mazel! Our winners are randomly generated with an automatic system. We hope you also note that one of our Boggle winners this week is Family Fischer!
MYSTERIES AND WONDER IN ERETZ YISROEL (Re: Mysteries That Span Earth, Issue 24) It is said that Eretz Yisroel is a microcosm of the world; everything can be found in it. And, in fact, there is a magnetic road near Tzfas (it is a quiet side road where you can experiment.) Also, the waters of the The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. HOW MUCH IN THE GLASS? (Re: A Glass of Homemade Schnapps, Issue 23) After reading the most recent issue of your excellent magazine, I have a question about the chocolate liqueur recipe you featured. The instructions were very clear, but it didn’t say how much the recipe yields. It’s important for me to know because I’d make it for mishloach manos. M.S. NESANEL YOEL SAFRAN RESPONDS: Each recipe makes about 1.5 pints (22 to 24 ounces).
ON BREAKING THE CYCLE (Re: Your Voice, Issue 23) I recently read the letter written by a concerned mother who was wondering how to rectify the fact that we buy, give, collect, and then throw out, an enormous amount of junk food each year at this time. I would like to share that in my house we also buy, give and and then buy off from the kids all the Purim junk food, but we do not throw it out. We collect it in a big bin, and on Shabbos afternoons, for as long as the bin lasts, each child picks a nosh from the bin. In this way, the nosh serves as a Shabbos party, which I assume most families treat their kids with each week. In my mind, it’s a win-win! Happy collecting! M.D.
WHITENING SOLUTION TIPS (Re: Bite-Size Pesach Cleaning, Issue 21) First, thank you so much for all of the amazing extras you include in The Boro Park View before each yom tov and in response to each point of interest that comes up. I’m following your Pesach cleaning series, and when I wanted to try the whitening recipe, I had a hard time

finding the Super Washing Soda. After searching all local stores, and even Target, I finally found a box in Walmart. (To make the search even easier, I’d like to point out that the box looks a little like a baking soda box, but bigger, and it contains 3 pounds and 7 ounces. See photo.) I also want to make readers aware that the whitening recipe is pretty strong, and I bleached an outfit by mistake when preparing the solution. So be careful not to spill when following the recipe! M.H.
WEEKLY INSIGHT (Re: Inspiration on the Parsha) I want to let you know how much I enjoy the parsha column by Malka Schneps. Each article is really insightful, inspiring and well written, with practical ways to enhance our avodas Hashem. Thank you! S. Weinstock
STEP BY SMALL STEP (Re: Climbing the Money Mountain) In today’s day and age, when so many people are struggling with making ends meet — and even more, with getting out debt — I find your series on debt management so validating, encouraging and helpful! The ideas you share are so simple to implement and really make such a difference. What an eye-opener it was to read that so much of the mismanagement of our money is not about earning too little, but about spending too much. D.E.
YOUR VOICE NOT A RACE AT ALL
Every year at this time so many feel that people are running a race based on peer pressure, where they stress out themselves and their families — and indeed, their entire communities — by creating themes for costumes and mishloach manos. I see it differently. Whether or not we think themed costumes or fancy mishloach manos or expensive seudos are in line with our view of how Purim (or any yom tov, simcha or occasion) should be, our nisayon is to view them with a smile. Mi k’amcha Yisroel! Look how happy you are, trying to find matching ribbons, or the right wording, or the perfect napkins. Unless... you aren’t. If you look forward to exercising your creativity or

PA RS H A S T E T Z AV E H Pessy cradled her newborn son in her arms as her husband looked on with joy. Pessy’s heart was swelling with love and happiness, but there was pain mixed in as well, and this pain did not allow her joy to be complete. “Yitzchok, I am so happy, but my happiness is tinged with sorrow, Pessy confessed. “You feel pain for Rivka, Yitzchok surmised. “Your older sister has not yet had a baby. Before Pessy even had a chance to respond, there was a knock on the door. It was Rivka herself, bearing flowers, chocolates, and a hot meal for Yitzchok and Pessy. “Mazel tov, mazel tov! Rivka cried. “As soon as I heard the news, I almost fell over with excitement. I couldn’t get here fast enough. My dear sister Pessy is a mother! Chasdei Hashem! The joy and love on Rivka’s face pushed all of Pessy’s concerns away, and her heart swelled with happiness. There was no
doubt that Rivka’s heart was full of genuine joy, without even a trace of pain or jealousy. The Rosh Yeshivah R’ Aharon Walkin, shlita, brings beautiful insight into the concept of lev tov based on this week’s parsha, which describes the choshen mishpat that Aharon Hakohen was zoche to wear. It is written: “V’nasa Aharon es shemos bnei Yisroel b’choshen hamishpat al libo... — And Aharon shall carry the names of the bnei Yisroel over his heart when he enters the sanctuary, as a remembrance before Hashem for all times (Shemos 28:29). It says in Gemara Shabbos (139a) that when Moshe Rabbeinu was chosen to be the leader of Klal Yisroel, Aharon came out to greet Moshe, and Aharon rejoiced in his heart. As a reward, Aharon was chosen to be Kohen Gadol and wear the choshen mishpat. Even though Moshe was chosen as leader over his older brother Aharon, Aharon still rejoiced. It says in Midrash (Shemos 3:17) that Aharon was zoche to wear the choshen misphat in the zechus of the joy that he felt in his

It says in Pirkei Avos, “Rabban Yochanan told his students to go out and see what is the best trait for a person to acquire. Rabbi Eliezer said an ayin tovah; Rabbi Yehoshua, a good friend; Rabbi Yosi, a good neighbor; Rabbi Shimon, foresight; Rabbi Elazar, a good heart. Rabban Yochanan said, ‘I prefer Rabbi Elazar’s answer, because it includes all the others’â€? (Pirkei Avos 2:9). what the difference is between an ayin tovah and a lev tov. At first glance, it would appear that both are similar: Both bring a person to see good in other people. The Tiferes Yisroel answers that a person with an ayin tovah sees good in other people, but only when it makes sense for him to do so. A person with a lev tov sees good in other people even when it does not make sense. A person with an ayin tovah sees good in others in accordance with seichel, whereas a person with a lev tov sees good in others even if seichel dictates otherwise. The Chazon Ish, in his work Emunah U’Bitachon, explains that when a person’s heart is filled with ahavah for another person, he will see only good in that person, just as a father sees only good in his child. A person with a lev tov has so much love for other people that he only sees good in others, leading him to always
be dan l’kaf zechus. The Maharal explains that one of the criteria of a lev tov is that a person is dan l’kaf zechus to everyone, because the dan l’kaf zechus is rooted in having a lev tov. A person with a lev tov wants good for other people, and he rejoices when other people receive good, even if, as in Aharon’s case, the other person receive good that “ought” to have been his. R’ Walkin explains that Aharon Hakohen had a true lev tov, and this is why he was zoche to carryBthe oy s names of the shevatim over his lev. & G In the fictional story above, Rivka had a lev tov, andir ls her lev tov not only enabled her to feel joy in her heart at her sister’s good fortune, but it enabled her sister to more fully experience her own simcha. May we all work on acquiring a lev tov, continually opening our heart to see the good in othersAand experiencing trueProgram joy. fun Packed

Month-Long Grace Period Announced for Violators as State Bag Ban Takes Effect Recognizing that the new bag-less reality is a major adjustment for many, state officials have announced that no penalties will be issued to those who distribute single-use plastic bags to their customers until after April 1. The bag ban, which went into effect this past Sunday, would have stores facing warnings for their first offense, $250 fines for a second violation, and $500 penalties for each subsequent infraction in the same calendar year. But state officials agreed to hold off on penalizing retailers for the next four weeks, saying it prefers to focus on education rather than enforcement at this time, as reported by The New York Post. A last-minute legal challenge to the ban brought by a coalition of minority bodega owners failed to convince an Albany judge to issue a temporary restraining order, which would have stalled the ban, at least in the short term. The group alleged that the state had not considered the ban’s effect on minority-owned small businesses in low-income neighborhoods, which would be disproportionately harmed by the new law.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has been extremely vocal in his support of the ban, calling it our “one chance to save our planet.” But local stores have been less than enthusiastic about the measure, according to BoroPark 24. “The ban is a problem. It confuses people,” said Yanky Goldstein, manager at KRM Supermarket. Gold-
52 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 4, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
stein said that customers weren’t prepared to think about how they would be getting their purchases home once the ban went into effect. Some stores are selling sealed containers of plastic shopping bags on their shelves, giving customers the ability to open them up at the register and use them as they had in the past. Super 13 Supermarket manager Simcha Friedman said that while he understands the environmental need to minimize plastic waste, the bag ban was poorly planned. “This is not how you do it,” said Friedman. “Learn from the Europeans and Israelis who let you have bags, but they charge you for it. People automatically cut down on bags because they don’t want to be charged, not like over here where they ban it completely.”
Officials Call for Calm as Coronavirus Hits New York Calling a Monday afternoon press conference to discuss coronavirus, Governor Andrew Cuomo worked hard to reassure residents about the outbreak that has sickened nearly 90,000 people and taken more than 3,000 lives, mostly in mainland China. A 39-year-old woman who had been traveling in Iran was confirmed last weekend as New York’s first case of coronavirus, also known as COVID-19. With the virus already rearing its ugly head in other states, Cuomo noted that its arrival in New York was inevitable. “From the beginning, we have believed it was not a question of if New York would have a coronavirus case, but when,” said Cuomo. “That’s why New York State has been preparing for weeks, and we are diligently managing the situation.” The state is already working with hospitals to reach a goal of creating 1,000 coronavirus tests per day, with new cleaning protocols instituted in schools and on public transportation. The governor has also asked the state legislature to approve $40 million in emergency funding to deal with the outbreak. Mayor Bill de Blasio warned that coronavirus could linger for months and urged residents to follow standard procedure during flu season, including frequent hand-washing and to cover their mouths when they cough or sneeze. The city’s public health lab has already geared up to begin testing for COVID-19, a step that will provide diagnoses in just hours, instead of having to
wait for days for results. Speaking with members of the media on Monday, de Blasio said that the city remains in a state of high vigilance. He called on anyone experiencing symptoms, which include mild to severe respiratory symptoms, coughing, fever, difficulty breathing and pneumonia, to contact their health care provider immediately, particularly those who have traveled to areas where the virus is prevalent. “We’d rather have people find out quickly that they do not have coronavirus, than people holding back who might have it and not getting the health care they need, and maximizing the chance of a dangerous spread,” said de Blasio. Cuomo warned state residents to get ready for the smell of bleach, which will be used to disinfect surfaces to limit the spread of the virus, while also calling for calm in the face of what will surely be more confirmed cases in New York. “This isn’t our first rodeo,” said Cuomo. “We have dealt with the swine flu, Ebola, SARS and the seasonal flu. We are fully coordinated. We are fully mobilized and we are fully prepared to deal with this situation as it develops.” By Tuesday morning, the governor was giving his second press conference in as many days after a 50-yearold lawyer from New Rochelle, NY, was confirmed as the state’s second case of coronavirus, a diagnosis that had three yeshivos closing for the day, as reported on VIN News. Cuomo said that the man was an attorney who worked in Manhattan and has a child enrolled at SAR Academy, a Modern Orthodox yeshivah in Riverdale. SAR sent an early-morning email to parents, telling them that both the high school and the elementary school were closed for the day as a precautionary measure. Two other local yeshivos followed suit and also gave students an unscheduled day off. Officials said that they are working with the man, who works in Manhattan, and his family to determine who else might have been exposed to the virus. New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said that the man had traveled to Miami, but would not have been able to spread the virus at that time. The man had been hospitalized with a respiratory condition in Westchester and was later transferred to a Manhattan hospital. The public is asked to daven for a refuah sheleimah for Yitzchak Eliezer ben Shifra. Cuomo noted that New York’s latest coronavirus victim had not traveled to any locations where an outbreak had occurred. According to the governor, officials have been expecting similar cases to arise locally and were amending the state’s paid leave sick bill to include those who are quarantined in case of a possible exposure to the virus.
New Law Could Have City Seizing Repeat Offenders’ Cars Reckless drivers, beware. A newly passed law could have New York City impounding your car, part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative meant to improve
safety on city streets. The Dangerous Vehicle Abatement law was introduced by City Councilmember Brad Lander, whose district includes portions of Boro Park. Under the law, drivers who have fifteen or more school-zone speed camera violations, or five or more red-light camera violations over a twelvemonth period could have their vehicles seized. Registered owners or vehicle operators could avoid having their vehicles impounded by completing a drivers’ safety course. The law will be in effect for three years, after which it will be subject to evaluation for possible renewal or modification. Lander said that the measure was the first of its kind in the country and would hold dangerous drivers accountable for their neighbors’ safety. “We are breaking ground with a new data-driven, restorative justice approach to end dangerous driving,” said Lander. De Blasio praised the legislation as being a major step toward improving safety on city streets. “We are putting all drivers on notice that if you behave recklessly behind the wheel, there will be real consequences,” said de Blasio. The new law will go into effect on February 26, 2021, and will apply to all violations issued after October 26, 2020.
Flu Hits Record Breaking Levels in NY Coronavirus may be making worldwide headlines, but here in New York, it is actually the flu that is the far bigger cause for concern, with a historic number of cases reported for the current season. According to the New York State Department of Health, 131,604 confirmed cases of the flu had been reported to officials as of the week ending February 22, a number that was 2,712 higher than the previous record set in the 20172018 flu season. New York has been tracking the number of confirmed flu cases since the 1998-1999 season. Governor Andrew Cuomo delivered some good news in the fight against the flu, announcing on February 27 that the number of recorded cases had declined for the second week in a row. Despite this positive development, three child flu deaths were reported last week, prompting both Cuomo and New York State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker to urge state residents to take precautionary steps to ward off the flu. “If you haven’t already been vaccinated, it’s not too late,” said Cuomo. “I urge you to get a vaccine and to please stay home if you are sick to avoid spreading the illness.” Other preventive measures recommended by state officials include frequent hand-washing with soap and water for at least twenty seconds, avoiding contact with those who are sick, and cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched objects and surfaces. Flu season typically lasts through the middle of the spring, which means that this year’s record-breaking totals will likely continue to rise.

Recap: Tzippy reacts to Miri’s nastiness by bursting into tears. Miri feels awful and tells Yaakov about it. In doing so, she realizes that perhaps she is creating a rift between Yaakov and Peretz. “Binyamin?” Shabsi stuck his head into the room just as Binyamin’s balled-up socks landed in the laundry bag. “What?” Binyamin yawned in response as he fluffed up his pillow. “Oh, you’re on the way to bed already? Okay, I’ll find someone else. I came to you because you once asked to join me for these types of jobs, remember?” “Sure!” Binyamin jumped up. “Did they call you?” “You’re not supposed to be so excited,” Shabsi chastised Binyamin, whose hands were now deep in the laundry bag. “I know, after tonight you’ll be able to buy two good shirts, and start saving for a new hat, and maybe you’ll even have enough money left over for a bottle of Coke, but it would be nice to remember where we’re going…” He concluded the sentence with a singsong intonation. “We have to remember that all our lives,” Binyamin agreed, ignoring the tingling at the back of his neck. It was a quarter to twelve at night. True, he was the one who had asked Shabsi if he could join him the next time such an opportunity arose, but that didn’t mean that the first time would be easy. “Oh, well, looks like I’ll need to take fresh socks from my drawer.” They walked together down the street, the streetlights casting macabre shadows of their figures every which way. But Binyamin just stared straight ahead. “What do I have to know?” he asked. His muscles were tense, and his shoulders felt
pinched. “Nothing special. With Tehillim and Mishnayos it’s one rate, and without them it’s another rate. But I always say Tehillim or learn. When it’s two of us we can take shifts, with one of us going out to doze and the other staying in the room.” “Where is it?” Binyamin remembered to ask. “Rashi Street. The levayah is supposed to be tomorrow morning.” “And they leave him in the house like that for all these hours?” “What does ‘like that’ mean? Can you think of something better for him now than having two yeshivah bachurim saying Tehillim at his side all night? So yes, that’s how they leave him.” Shabsi was emphatic as he turned right. Binyamin didn’t know what he expected to see when they arrived, but the building was silent. There was no wailing from inside, and the wall was bare; there were no signs. “We have to tell them to put up a warning sign for Kohanim,” Shabsi said, scanning the gate. “Who is it?” Binyamin asked as they climbed the stairs in the ancient building. “A very old man, a Holocaust survivor. His grandson taught me in yeshivah ketanah, and he was one of the youngest of his grandsons. There are already great-grandchildren in the family who are married. Do you know a Greenzweig here?” “No,” Binyamin said. The door on the second floor was open.

Shabsi knocked lightly, gently, and without waiting, walked inside. Binyamin followed, trying to keep his breathing even. He couldn’t look at the faces of the people who came forward to greet them. Shabsi spoke to them, looking every bit like someone who knew his job well. Then he nudged Binyamin slightly with his arm toward the narrow doorway on the right. They stepped into a room with a high ceiling whose walls were covered in old-fashioned floral wallpaper. For the first minute it was terrifying. The flickering candles on the floor near the tallis, the dim room, the medical devices standing, abandoned and silent, on the side… Then Binyamin’s eyes caught sight of something: a small, black faded hat, hanging on a hook opposite the door. It was a narrow-brimmed hat, clearly purchased 30 or 40 years ago. All those years ago, a hat manufacturer had sat and designed that hat, and then all the bachurim, and perhaps even the married young men, had bought that style hat, because that was “in” at the time. And almost without realizing it, Binyamin raised his hand and touched his own hat. Shabsi was already sitting on the chair near the wall, swaying over a small Tehillim, but Binyamin was still standing at the door and staring at the hat that had remained hanging on the wall.

“What do you say about this doctor, Totty?” Elisheva Potolsky asked her father as the two of them walked out of the outpatient clinic at Beilinson Hospital. “He’s good,” he replied. “Yes, baruch Hashem. He gives a professional impression,” Elisheva agreed. “I’m happy we found him. If walking will become easier for you, then coming all the way here will have been worth it.” She stepped up to the curb and flagged a taxi. “To Bnei Brak, Chazon Ish Street,” she said as her father struggled into the front seat. “You need to go to work,” he protested feebly. “You should get off there; I’ll continue to my place by myself.” “I want to talk to the management at the nursing home about the physical therapy that you need,” Elisheva said. “And it’s fine; I’m not losing a day of work. I switched my day off this week.” He murmured something, and she closed the door behind him. Her cell phone rang just as she settled into the back seat. She ignored it at first; she didn’t like speaking on the phone when she was with her father. But it continued ringing over and over again, and she saw the driver glancing at her quizzically through the mirror. She hastily pulled the phone out of her pocketbook, making sure as she did so that her father’s insurance card was there. Rosenblit’s number was on her phone’s screen. What did the lawyer’s office want now? Hadn’t Eliyahu tied up all the loose ends with them? “Hello?”
“Hello, this is Rosenblit. Am I speaking with Mrs. Potolsky?” “Yes. Is there something I can help you with, Mr. Rosenblit?” “Well, your husband isn’t available right now, and I wanted to find out what was going on.” “What do you mean?” she asked warily. Of course Eliyahu wasn’t available now; he was in kollel. But what did Rosenblit want? As far as she knew, they’d had a bit more than 15,000 shekels left in the account after all the wedding expenses, and Eliyahu had wired the money back to the lawyer. “You made a bank transfer to us yesterday for 15,350 shekels.” “That’s right.” “So, what is that money?” “What do you mean? It’s what was left over from what we got from you.” “But the receipts that you sent in show that there was a smaller amount remaining.” “Oh,” she said. “Yes, there were a few small things that my husband felt were not covered by the agreement with Mr. Korman, but they were on the same receipts so the sum was higher. But we returned that money.” “What kind of things did your husband feel were not covered by the agreement?” Elisheva tried to remember. “Like three new shirts for my son, when he only needed one for the wedding. And there was something else there… Oh, right, he had a voucher for a discount on a hat, which he got from yeshivah, so the amount we paid for the hat was less than what the receipt showed. There were a few other clothing items for the family with the same story.” She didn’t tell him about the shoes she’d bought for Miri when they’d gone to buy Tzippy’s wedding shoes after Miri had remarked several times that she liked
a certain pair of weekday shoes. She also didn’t tell him about the new towels she had chosen for herself, as per Eliyahu’s request. When he’d seen the tower of new towels and linens growing in the closet in the girls’ room and on the shelf in their room, he’d asked her to buy something new for herself, for their house. At first, he’d wanted her to buy a good set of linen. “You’re always replacing one shmattah piece with
“What? Which change?” “The change you wired back. If even a small amount like this is transferred back to his account, he could have trouble from the tax authorities. So he doesn’t want it.” Elisheva recoiled. “What… what does that mean?” she asked, eyes fixed on the red light ahead of them. “I’m sure that you can transfer the money to him somehow.” “This is what he wants,” the lawyer declared resolutely. “And as I told you already when we met, you don’t quibble with millionaires’ idiosyncrasies.” Elisheva wasn’t sure she remembered that statement, and she was even less sure that she agreed with it. “What about the Stockhammers?” she asked. “How did they react to the fact that they didn’t have to return the change?” “They didn’t have any change,” Rosenblit said. “And based on their receipts, they even exceeded the amount that they received by a bit.” Well, Elisheva certainly had no intention of discussing Peretz’s family’s finances with the lawyer. “I’ll speak to my husband,” she said hesitantly. They didn’t need tzedakah money! “I don’t know if we would want to receive money that isn’t included in the agreement. We’ve finished with the wedding expenses.” “So just give it to the young couple as a gift,” the lawyer said, sounding rather disinterested. “And that’s not Korman’s demand; he just said you should keep the money. It’s just my suggestion. Your daughter doesn’t work yet, right? And the kollelim don’t give much. What do they live off?” Whatever all the other young couples in their situation live off, Elisheva wanted to say, but didn’t. Because Tzippy really wasn’t having an easy time right now.
Elisheva recoiled. “What... what does that mean?” she asked, eyes fixed on the red light ahead of them. “I’m sure that you can transfer the money to him somehow.”
62 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 4, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
another,” he’d said. “By now the sets aren’t even sets. The pillowcases don’t have matching sheets anymore, and the sheets don’t have matching pillowcases. I want you to also have something nice and new out of all this shopping. We’ll manage with the expense, b’ezras Hashem.” But when she saw the skyhigh prices in the high-end linen store that Tzippy had buoyantly marched into, choosing three sets for herself — well, Elisheva’s heart just didn’t let her follow suit. She sufficed with four good-quality, soft towels, the type she hadn’t allowed herself to buy for more than twenty years, and they had paid for it with a check that included everything. Eliyahu had carefully kept a list of all these additional expenses and had deducted them from the final tally. She wouldn’t be detailing those things to the lawyer. “Those little purchases don’t make a difference to Korman,” Rosenblit said, sounding somewhat impatient. “Actually, he sent me a message this morning that he doesn’t want any of the change.”

Steyer, Buttigieg and Klobuchar Exit 2020 Presidential Race THE PULSE: After finishing third in South Caro-
lina’s primary, California businessman Tom Steyer announced that he was withdrawing from the 2020 presidential race. Steyer rose to fame by spending millions on an “Impeach Trump” campaign. However, he was never considered a top-tier presidential candidate. He invested heavily in South Carolina, and after his disappointing third-place finish, it was clear that he had no path forward. Buttigieg’s
68 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 4, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
withdrawal on Sunday was a political surprise, as he was considered a leading candidate. He had indicated that he planned to compete in the Super Tuesday contests. On Monday afternoon, Amy Klobuchar announced that she was withdrawing from the race. THE IMPACT: Buttigieg’s withdrawal was strategic. He exited the campaign on a political high. His rise from small-town mayor to Iowa caucus victor and leading Democratic presidential candidate was meteoric. He has positioned himself as a power broker in the Democratic party. He will be a serious contender for the vice presidential slot on any Democratic ticket or a cabinet position in a future Democratic administration. Amy Klobuchar’s highwater
\]]]]]]]
mark was her third-place finish in the New Hampshire primaries. Her sales pitch of Midwestern values and affability did not garner enough support to keep her candidacy viable.
Biden Scores Convincing Victory in South Carolina Primary THE PULSE: Joe Biden won 48% of the vote and netted 35 delegates in
the South Carolina primary. Bernie Sanders finished second, with 19% and 13 delegates. Tom Steyer finished third, with 11%, and Pete Buttigieg finished fourth at 8.2%. Both Steyer and Buttigieg failed to receive any delegates, as they were unable to reach the minimum required threshold.
In honor of Purim, send a personal professional Poem to that special someone…
THE IMPACT: The results of the South Carolina primary are a game-
changer for the Democratic primary race. After disappointing finishes in Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada, the South Carolina primary was a must-win contest for Biden. Biden is now back in the race and has repositioned himself as the leading centrist alternative to Sanders. His margin of victory was impressive and more extensive than predicted. Biden’s convincing win will likely serve to blunt the momentum of Bernie Sanders.
The “Stop Bernie” Movement Gathers Steam
Deadline for Purim orders: Sunday, March 8
THE PULSE: On Monday, both Pete Buttigieg and Amy Klobuchar an-
nounced that they were endorsing Joe Biden for the 2020 nomination. These endorsements come on the heels of Biden’s strong performance in South Carolina. Many Democrats who questioned Biden’s strength as a candidate have come around to rally for his cause. They now see him as the best-positioned centrist to win the nomination and the only centrist capable of stopping the Sanders juggernaut. THE IMPACT: The withdrawal of Buttigieg and Klobuchar and their
subsequent endorsements will have a significant impact on the race. These developments will add to Biden’s momentum. Additionally, Sanders has a substantial lead in polling in California. Most observers expect him to win the state. If no other candidate wins 15% of the vote, all of the state’s delegates will be awarded to the victor. Such a massive haul of delegates would essentially make Sanders’ lead insurmountable. However, with the withdrawal of Buttigieg and Klobuchar, it is now highly likely that Biden will surpass the 15% threshold. Therefore, even if Sanders wins the state, he will have to divvy up the delegates with Biden and any other candidate who crosses the threshold. Furthermore, a narrower field of centrists to choose from will undoubtedly help Biden in his other Super Tuesday contests.

Chance of Brokered Convention Rises THE PULSE: The Democratic Delegate count remains tight. To date, 155 delegates have been awarded. Bernie Sanders leads with 58 pledged delegates, and Joe Biden is second with 50. At press time the allocation of the 1,357 delegates up for grabs on Super Tuesday has not yet been announced. To win the nomination, a candidate must secure 1,991 delegates. Based on recent polling, it is becoming less likely that a candidate will secure 1,991 delegates, which will lead to a brokered convention. According to Nate Silver and the number crunchers at FiveThirtyEight, there is a 64% chance of a brokered convention occurring. THE IMPACT: If no candidate can secure a majority of pledged del-
egates on the first vote, the convention will move to the second round of voting. This second round of voting will trigger the "Brokered Convention" scenario. During this round, all pledged delegates are free to vote for whomever they choose. Additionally, unelected party superdelegates will be able to cast their votes for their preferred candidate. Superdelegates are composed of elected Democratic party officials, party stalwarts and leaders. It is doubtful that Democratic party grandees will support Bernie Sanders even if he has a plurality of pledged delegates. This will likely result in a bitter and acrimonious fight with potentially unforeseen consequences. The last brokered Democratic convention was in 1952 when Adlai Stevenson was the Democratic nominee.
The Politics of Coronavirus
spRIng
2020
THE PULSE: The bitter partisan divide that currently grips the United States has turned a national health emergency into a political football. Democratic senators and presidential candidates criticized the Trump administration's previous attempts to cut the budgets of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and the NIH (National Institute of Health). The Trump administration indeed sought funding cuts for these organizations, but due to congressional opposition, the budget cuts never materialized. Democrats also criticized the administration for the 2018 firing of the NSC team responsible for a global pandemic response. President Trump appointed Vice President Mike Pence as the point man on coronavirus but later referred to the virus as "a hoax." Trump also promised a vaccine in a fairly quick manner. However, this claim runs counter to the opinions of leading public health experts, who believe that a vaccine for COVID-19 is a year or more away from production. Donald Trump Jr. accused Democrats of wanting millions of people to die from coronavirus to stop the president's streak of "winning." Mike Pence called on all Americans to come together to fight the virus but refused to condemn the remarks of Trump Jr. and called them "understandable." The administration requested $2.5 billion in emergency funding to deal with the illness. Still, several Republican, and many Democratic, senators claimed that much higher levels of funding were required to address the issue adequately. THE IMPACT: The real impact of the coronavirus is the human toll

that it is extracting upon thousands of people across the globe. It is a sad testament to the current state of our political affairs — that this dangerous virus has become a mere means of attempting to score political points and wins by each side over the other.

Tongue as It’s Meant To Be INGREDIENTS 1 tongue
5 cloves garlic
1 onion
Salt
DIRECTIONS 1. Fill an 8-quart pot three-quarters full with water. Slice the onion into eight, and place it into the pot together with the garlic cloves and salt. 2. Place tongue inside the pot. Bring water to a boil on high flame, and then reduce to medium flame once it bubbles. 3. Cook for 5 hours, checking every 1½ hours to make sure there’s enough water, and adding water as necessary. 4. Tongue meat has to be peeled immediately, when it is still very hot. The hotter the meat, the better chance for it to peel smoothly. Thick kitchen gloves work very well for this. Don the gloves, and with your hands, remove the tongue from the pot. Using a knife, peel off the entire outer layer. 5. Put a small amount of the drippings from the pot into a pan (too much will make the meat soggy), place the tongue into the pan, and refrigerate until very cold, or overnight. 6. Once the meat is very cold, it’s simple to cut it into perfect, thin slices. You can use a butcher knife or even a serrated Victorinox, which also works very well. 7. This tongue freezes beautifully. Just lay the slices in a pan with a very small amount of the drippings. Reheat without any dressings.
Most of the tongues that people buy and cook are pickled, but nothing compares to the buttery texture of fresh tongue cooked right. The novelty of tongue, that melt-in-themouth texture it’s legendary for, only results from a fresh tongue, since pickling toughens the meat. I cook the tongue simply and serve it alongside a dressing that can be either poured over the slices of meat or plated separately as a dipping sauce. Dill Dressing Plain mayonnaise is delicious as a condiment to tongue, but if you want something upgraded, this dressing always wins in my house.
INGREDIENTS 6 heaping T. mayonnaise 2 frozen garlic cubes 2 frozen dill cubes 2 tsp. sugar ½ tsp. lemon juice ½ tsp. salt ¼ tsp. ground black pepper
DIRECTIONS Using a hand blender, mix well.

Deli Roll
This deli roll takes minutes to prepare and is a great addition to your Purim seudah — or to serve anytime. I serve it each Friday afternoon for to’ameha, and my family never gets bored of this delicious treat! If you want to use it as a main for supper, you can add a layer of ground meat before you roll it up, or upgrade the flavor by adding sauteed onions. But trust me — it’s delicious as is! Yields 1 deli roll 1
INGREDIENTS 1 (10x15”) Mechel’s puffed pastry dough (comes in a 2-pack) 1 (6 oz.) pkg. pastrami 1 (6 oz.) pkg. smoked turkey Honey 2
Deli mustard 1 egg Sesame seeds
DIRECTIONS 1. Remove one dough from the freezer, and defrost overnight in the fridge, or on the counter for a half-hour.
3
2. Preheat oven to 350°. If you’re using the above dough, there’s no need to even roll it out. Unfold the dough onto a pan 1 lined with a large piece of parchment paper (this will prevent the need to transfer it, ensuring the roll stays in shape). 3. Squirt honey deli mustard.
2
over it. Then top with a layer of
4. Add two layers 3 of cold cuts, one package at a time. Feel free to use any cold cuts you like. Add another layer of honey over the cold cuts.
4
5. Roll it up tightly, 4 jellyroll-style. Lightly beat an egg and smear egg wash over loaf. Top with sesame seeds. 6. Bake for 40–50 minutes. I bake it for 42 minutes exactly, but each oven works a bit differently.

Stuffed Cabbage
82 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
If you are a fan of your grandmother’s Hungarian huluptzes, only dare to try this recipe if you want something different! With its tangy flavor, this Americanized version of the age-old variety is not only delicious but also very simple to make. Yields 20 large pieces
1
2
INGREDIENTS 20 cabbage leaves (I use pre-checked frozen)
FILLING 2 lb. ground beef
1 tsp. paprika
2 T. ketchup
½ tsp. salt
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 eggs
1 tsp. onion powder
⅓ cup bread crumbs
3
SAUCE ⅓ (or a drop less) cup lemon juice
1 (46 oz.) can tomato juice 2 (15 oz.) cans tomato sauce
4
1½ cups brown sugar (not too tightly packed)
1 (6 oz.) can tomato paste
DIRECTIONS 1. If you are working with frozen cabbage, allow it to defrost in the fridge overnight. 2. Cut off the bottom 1 2 of each cabbage leaf, so that it should be straight and easy to work with.
5
3. Take a handful of filling 3 (I work very systemically and first roughly divide filling into 20) and place it into the center of the cabbage leaf. 4. Roll the leaf up tightly 5. Trim the ends

on either side of the roll.
6. Using your two pointer fingers, push the two sides in 6 until they are firmly in place. This ensures that the stuffed cabbage will not open 7 and will keep its shape while cooking, melding together with the meat.

7. Place all sauce ingredients into a large roaster pan and allow to cook until incorporated. 8. Add the stuffed cabbage. 8 After the sauce comes to a boil, reduce the flame to medium-low and cover. Cook for 2½–3 hours, checking every half-hour until the cabbage is very soft. When using a roaster pan, I turn on both the front and rear flames.

9. You can serve the stuffed cabbage over a bed of rice; this recipe has plenty of sauce for that purpose.

D U L C E A O F WO R M S (d. 1196)
Respected activist who taught community women and assisted them financially against the backdrop of the Crusades A beloved picture of greatness, Dulcea of Worms stood out for her righteousness and fine qualities, all channeled for public benefit. As the wife of Reb Elazar of Vermeiza (Worms), otherwise known as the Rokeach after the sefer he authored, Dulcea took a communal stand. She was a leading figure in the elite nobility of chassidei Ashkenaz in Medieval Germany. Much of what is known about Dulcea was written by her husband in poetic form after her untimely passing. He praised her as a “chassidah and tzaddikah,” a saintly and righteous woman. Dulcea was unusually learned. She shared her extensive knowledge with the women of the community, teaching them Torah and tefil-

lah. Her strong roots in ruchnius were what drew women to seek her guidance. Remarkably, she was also the head of the chevrah kaddisha of the Worms kehillah. In addition to her activism in Yiddishkeit, Dulcea displayed astute business acumen, which she used to help those around her. She became a money lender, a prime “Jewish occupation” of the day. Her earnings were used to support her extensive household, including rebbeim and their talmidim, in addition to her immediate family. Many neighbors and locals entrusted their funds with her and she invested them wisely, with high returns. The community resources were in her hands. Dulcea also served as community shadchan, but her role included more than the initial arranging of shidduchim. After a shidduch was finalized, she’d help the kallah prepare for her wedding, and she would also negotiate the financial obligations involved. In November 1196, tragedy struck when two armed Germans entered her home. The entire family was inside at the time, as well as some melamdim and their talmidim. The attackers wounded everyone present and killed Dulcea’s two daughters, Bellette and Chana. Despite her injury, Dulcea jumped up and ran out of the house to call for help. The assailants ran after her and killed Dulcea on the street outside her home. This distraction gave Reb Elazar the opportunity to lock the door to prevent the attackers from reentering. Whether the attackers were Crusaders or bandits out for Dulcea’s money is debatable. Regardless, the untimely passing of this respected communal figure plunged the women of Worms into deep mourning, and her loss left a void not easily filled.
D O N A G R AC I A N A S I - M E N D E S (1510–1569)
A Hidden Jewess who helped thousands escape the Spanish Inquisition via her “underground railroad” How did an influential businesswoman come to save generations of Spanish Jews? Dona Gracia Nasi’s business life began shortly after marriage. Together with her husband, Francisco Mendes, she launched a large trading company based in Portugal. Business boomed, and soon they had amassed considerable wealth. During all this time, they hid their Jewishness and masqueraded as Christians — the typical Marrano life. Francisco tragically passed away young, in 1536. That very same year, Portugal began to clamp down on the Marrano community, and Gracia and her only daughter Brianda fled to Antwerp. There, Gracia partnered with her brotherin-law, and her wealth continued to prosper in their joint trading firm. Even though Yidden in Antwerp were able to display their Jewishness openly, Dona Gracia chose to keep hers a secret — it would not have been possible to maintain her high-profile businesswoman figure otherwise. And she was using this status for pivotal things. Through her trading routes, Gracia secretly smuggled thousands of Spanish Jews, ferrying them to freedom from under the Inquisition’s nose. On ships carrying spices and gems, her business agents concealed many secret Jews. She had agents throughout Europe helping her maintain this network of escape routes. They also offered guidance to the fugitives and helped recover property and wealth left behind in Spain. Dona Gracia also assisted the escapees financially through providing them with jobs in her many establishments and warehouses until they could reach safe lands.
After a period of joint success, Dona Gracia’s brother-in-law passed away suddenly, leaving the entire business to her. Her wealth attracted unwanted attention, and when her daughter was desired by the royal family, Gracia made a hasty escape from Antwerp, managing to take along most of her wealth. Gracia and Brianda soon arrived in Venice, Italy, where Jews were able to live openly — in the ghetto. But Gracia still needed to remain a secret Jewess, unless she wanted to give up her business and trading, which meant putting a stop to the clandestine Marrano escape route... Soon the Jews of Venice were persecuted as well, and Dona Gracia moved on to Ferrara, Italy. There, she finally proclaimed her Jewishness openly for the first time. However, it wasn’t long before the Jews of Ferrara were made to feel unwanted after being blamed for a vicious pandemic that plagued the city. Gracia fled to Constantinople. In the Ottoman Empire, a place where Jews were warmly welcomed at the time, she was able to maintain her trading empire and live openly as a Yid. In her personal villa, she hosted about 80 poor people at her table every day, and she supported the poor by funding their heat and clothing during the harsh winter. And, finally, she was able to overtly support Jewish organizations. She sponsored hospitals, shuls and schools. Famous among them were the “Synagogue of the Senora” in Constantinople and the “Gracia Shul” in Salonika, Greece. Her philanthropy extended far and wide, and she also single-handedly supported communities in Turkey, Italy and Eretz Yisroel. During this chapter of her life, she also secured permission to fund a settlement in Tiveria, where many Spanish fugitives were able to settle peacefully. She actually built a palace for herself in Tiveria, but sadly did not manage to make the move. Dona Gracia Nasi-Mendes was lovingly praised as the “heart of her people,” and generations of Jews can attribute their existence to her courageous heroism.

T EMER L BERGSON (1765–1830)
Chassidic woman who funded and advocated for Polish Jewry She was known as a “chassidah” and was perhaps one of the most influential chassidishe woman in Polish history. Temerl ran the family business, used her contacts in broader circles to benefit Yiddishkeit, and dispensed inexhaustible amounts of tzedakah. Temerl Bergson was an extraordinary phenomenon in the social structure of her day. The early 1800s were trying times for the ehrliche Yidden of Poland. The Haskalah movement was gaining power, and their bond with the Polish government was bringing more
90 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 4, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
trouble for the frum community. Temerl jumped into action. With her connections with government officials, she helped revoke some of the laws the Haskalah promoted. In one famous incident, when there was a ban against chassidim visiting their rebbes, she leveraged the governor of Warsaw and managed to have the ruling overturned. Reb Simcha Bunim of Peshischa wittily commented that Temerl failed to understand that tzaddikim actually favored the ban, for they preferred the undisturbed time for Torah and avodah… She and her husband Berek (Dov) were fabulously wealthy — and she channeled much of their philanthropy to support the burgeoning courts of rebbes in Poland. The Bergsons were branded as the “Rothschilds of Polish Jewry.” Despite his wealth and prominent connections, Berek kept his beard, peyos and full Yiddishe levush. Likewise, Temerl was a learned woman who is said to have worn tzitzis. Temerl was a businesswoman with a discriminate eye. She hired hundreds of chassidim and outstanding talmidei chachamim to work in her businesses, thus supporting them in an honorable fashion. Among her employees was the Rebbe
Reb Simcha Bunim of Peshischa, who was hired in her timber company before he became Rebbe. She allowed her staff to work for some time and then spend the rest of their day learning onsite. She believed that her wealth prospered largely because of this “beis midrash” under her company’s roof that she encouraged. Many poor families in Warsaw, and even beyond, lived off the alms she distributed, and she was known to “spend money like ashes” to support rebbes and the chassidishe community. The Bergsons were Koznitzer chassidim, but Temerl sought to support a vast array of chassidishe sects. While Reb Simcha Bunim of Peshischa, Reb Yitzchak of Vorka, and others accepted her financial aid, the Chiddushei Harim and Reb Menachem Mendel of Kotzk reportedly refused her money. Temerl had true appreciation for the gedolim of her time and longed to serve them. Once, she visited Reb Simcha Bunim of Peshischa when he was in Carlsbad. After giving a large donation, she personally took the Rebbe’s clothes and handwashed them. It was an act that belied her social status and demonstrated that she recognized herself simply as a proxy of Hashem’s abundance. Today she is remembered as a mother to the poor and as a guardian who helped the community during times of distress.

Young wife and mother devoted to the rescue of Yidden trapped in Nazioccupied Europe Yidden were in danger! And there had to be a way to help them. This was Recha’s mantra, her mission. If there is anyone who could be credited for doing everything in her power to ameliorate and stop the suffering of her fellow Yidden, it is Mrs. Recha Sternbuch. From her humble home in the oasis of neutral Switzerland, she single-handedly spearheaded one of the greatest rescue opera-
tions in Jewish history. From assisting a single Yid in need, to strategizing for Yiddishkeit at large, Recha spared no effort. She and her husband used bribes, ransoms and put themselves in danger to deal directly with the enemy to achieve these goals. In those war-torn years, the Sternbuch home opened its doors to refugees looking for a safe haven. To the surprise of her neighbors, their previously calm single-family abode became an address that dozens soon called their own — sometimes for months at a time. It was always crowded, always busy. Guests were served food and drink and provided with mattresses on which to sleep. Recha herself barely slept during that panicstricken period. How could she rest while so many were suffering? She spent many a night in the forests, helping countless Yidden from Nazi-occupied Europe cross the Austrian border to safety. She helped smuggle them over with forged passports and waiting drivers. Sometimes she herself, clothed in black, would be the one to drive them to her home. Recha’s husband, Yitzchak, had factory and business contacts in Zurich. With untiring dedication, Recha worked to find temporary homes for the refugees in safe houses in Zurich. Recha also had extensive contacts of her own, including connections with the Agudah overseas. For the most part, the world of Torah Jewry abroad had little information about the atrocities that their European brethren were enduring. In a famous cable, Recha informed the Vaad Hatzalah in New York that the Nazis planned to exterminate

Europe’s remaining Jews with poison gas by the end of the year. This knowledge spurred Recha to reach out to her political contacts, too. Her secret negotiations with former fascist Swiss president JeanMarie Musy were said to have saved as many as 300,000 Jewish lives! She got Musy to convince his friend, Nazi SS Chief Heinrich Himmler, to stop killing the Jews. As a result, on November 24, 1944, Himmler countermanded Hitler’s orders and called for the destruction of the gas chambers of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Five days before this unanticipated end to the Final Solution, the Sternbuchs had cabled a message to the Vaad Hatzalah that read, “Secured a promise to cease extermination in concentration camps.” By stopping the murder of Jews throughout the Reich, the remainder of Hungarian Jewry and more were saved. At one point, Recha was arrested and placed in prison, where she remained for a couple of weeks. She was charged with illegally smuggling Jews into Switzerland and acquiring forged passports. Recha admitted to the accusations, but refused to reveal the names of others involved in her work. The charges were later dismissed for “lack of evidence,” and Recha was even given 100 francs toward her rescue efforts as a touching gesture! In time, the name Recha Sternbuch became synonymous with bravery, hospitality, resourcefulness and an unwavering desire to help Klal Yisroel.

It should come as little surprise that the Torah, the blueprint to the universe, possesses all of the secrets of this world. Hidden in plain sight, encoded through the cleverest and simplest of clues, is all of mankind’s history — and even the latest current events. One simply needs to know where to look. The Vilna Gaon, zt”l, said, “All that was, is, and will be unto the end of time, is included in the Torah, in the Shisha Sidrei Mishnah... and not merely in a general sense, but including the detail of every person individually, and the most minute details of everything that happened to him from the day of his birth until his death; likewise of every kind of animal ... and of all that grows or is inert.” The Torah is the original treasure map, laden with both clear directions and hidden meaning. the same amount of letters spacing each of its letters apart. The relevance of the ELS number as well as the location of the letters are usually very telling. As a simple example, Reb Michoel Ber found the word Torah (taf, vuv, reish, hei) at 50 ELS — a deeply consequential number. It begins with the very first taf in
Sefer Bereishis, then continues with a vav 50 letters later, and there are another 50 letters to the reish and then to the hei. With the advent of computers, this astounding program has made wide inroads into the kiruv movement, surprising searchers of truth with the brilliant hidden messages. What is perhaps more amazing to note is that many of the findings had already been located by the Vilna Gaon and Reb Michoel Ber Weissmandl, zt”l — without electronic assistance!
THE MEGILLAH IN THE TORAH Now the 12,111 letters of the Megillah become relevant. At statistically improbable odds, the words Mordechai and Megillas Esther appear in the Torah at 12,111 ELS spacing! That means that the letters of the name Mordechai ( )מרדכיcan be found 12,111 letters apart. Even more surprising is that the appearance of the name Mordechai starts with the mem in the word mor d’ror, in a pasuk that Chazal say alludes to Mordechai Hatzaddik, and in most years, is the Torah portion read on the week of Purim! The find of the name Mordechai amazed Reb Michoel Ber, as the location so aptly reiterates this esoteric Chazal. Similarly, the word Esther ()אסתר starts in a pasuk that mentions the word Esther (the only place in the Torah that does!).
PURIMFEST 1946! Another astounding allusion Reb Michoel Ber discovered was in the Megillah itself. Preceding the names of the sons of Haman, it says that the “Yidden killed 500 men, among them…” and then the ten names are listed. The Megillah goes on to relate that Achashverosh asked Esther, “What is it you want now?” And Esther cryptically replied, “If it pleases the king, allow the Yidden of Shushan to do tomorrow as they have today, and let Haman’s sons be hanged at the gallows.” It seems rather odd that she would request the hanging of ten men who had already been slaughtered. And why “tomorrow”? The meforshim say that though Hashem is not mentioned in the Megillah, every time there is reference to “the king,” it alludes to our King, the King of all kings. Esther seemed to plead for something unusual. When the Megillah was written by Mordechai Hatzaddik and Esther, they embedded a secret in the names of Haman’s children that seems to elucidate the odd request
— although it did take over two millennia for the meaning to come to light. Transcribed over 2,000 years ago, there are three letters in this section that have always been written in a smaller size than the rest (see image). Among the names of Haman’s children, the taf, shin and zayin appear unusually small. There never was an explanation offered for this anomaly – until this century. The letters תש"זis how we would write the year 5707. And so it happened, at the very start of year 5707, תש"ז, on October 16, 1946 (21 Tishrei, 5707), ten sons of Haman — ten convicted Nazi war criminals — were hanged in
March 4, 2020 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 99 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Nuremberg at the gallows. “If it pleases the King … do tomorrow as they have done today.” Lest that doesn’t boggle your mind, or if you cynically noted that תש"זmerely connotes 707 and not the current millenium, take note of the oversized vav at the start of the name of the tenth son. Yes, the millennium, too, has always been clearly noted. The history of the Nuremberg Trials had some other fascinating elements play out, and relevant here are the war criminals’ appeals for amnesty. Though originally found guilty in June 1946, analysts were stumped to hear that appeals for amnesty were permitted — thus delaying sentencing and subsequent hanging until October. What the stymied spectators had not grasped was that October was Tishrei, when we entered year 5707. This date was scheduled over 2,000 years ago; antsy historical observers were just going to have to wait. To further highlight this “coincidence,” it is interesting to note that there were actually 11 Nazis on trial at the time, but Goering, ym”sh, was found dead in his cell the morning prior, ensuring that the final count of those hanged was in fact ten. If the parallel were not obvious enough without further corroboration, in Nazi Julius Streicher’s well-documented final diatribe were the unlikely words, "Purimfest 1946." Even secular media outlets wrote about the randomness of those final words. (We note that Streicher, ym”sh, was well-versed in the Talmud, having spent hours poring over the holy texts in search of mentions of Yidden that would put them in a poor light.)
MORE SECRETS On Purim we hide our true faces — and on Purim secrets are revealed. And there’s so much more! The Megillah is replete with all sorts of hidden messages. Incidentally, the only thing “interchangeable” between aror Haman and baruch Mordechai is their gematria. According to the Magen Avraham, the mitzvah of drinking to the point of confusing the two is merely a matter of being incapable of calculating their numeric value. One needn’t be too intoxicated to find that difficult. Another allusion is found in the pasuk in the Megillah that is read aloud: “Ish Yehudi hayah b’Shushan habirah…” (2:5). The words Yehudi hayah ( )יהודי היהhave both the roshei teivos and sofei teivos of Hashem’s name. There are legions of remazim embedded throughout this heilige text, and in countless ways, our Heavenly Father is clearly there within, hidden in plain sight.

Tov V’Chesed prepares for $250,000 Purim initiative that will bring joy to orphaned homes and struggling families
Jerusalem, Israel - With the Purim spirit in the air and the month of simcha upon us, Tov V’Chesed offices are seeing a whirlwind of activity as staff and volunteers ready for another Purim to remember. As the premier Chesed organization in Israel, Tov V’Chesed is no stranger to Matanos L’evyonim and Mishloach Manos. After all, this is a mitzvah that they are involved in 365 days a year. On Purim however, when all of Klal Yisroel joins in these tremendous mitzvohs, the organization takes it up a notch by arranging for various initiatives that bring joy to the saddened homes of widows and orphans. In addition to the mitzvah of spreading Simcha on Purim, Tov V’Chesed has another reason for these massive undertakings. While most families associate Purim with fun, laughter and happiness, families who lost a parent or live in extreme poverty, suffer even more when their void is magnified as everyone around them is having the time of their lives. Over the years, Tov V’Chesed has heard many stories of families who kept their windows and doors shut on Purim because they were embarrassed that there was no food on the table or children who were ashamed to go out because they didn’t have the ability to exchange Mishloach Manos with friends. On the most joyful day of the year, these struggling families were in a pit of despair and sadness. That is why Tov V’Chesed, under the leadership of R’ Yakkov Eliezer Shisha, runs an annual Purim drive that spreads the cheer and Simcha of this auspicious time. This year, the organization plans to add to its already extensive list of services: Matanos L’evyonim: The heartbeat of the campaign, this distribution provides meaningful support to destitute families. Many Jews around the world send Matanos L’evyonim donations to Tov V’Chesed and the funds are distributed on the day of Purim, as the Halacha requires. This year, Tov V’Chesed hopes to raise and hand out nearly $150,000 for orphaned and struggling families! Seudas Purim: For families who lost a parent or can’t put food on the table, Tov V’Chesed delivers a large, nourishing meal so that they too can experience a true Purim seudah. This year, around 350 families will receive fish, meat, wine and more, and have the ability to celebrate Purim in style. Mishloach Manos: Every Mishloach Manos that someone receives has two facets that are appreciated; the content of the gift and the thoughtfulness of the sender. Tov V’Chesed volunteers prepare Thousands of Mishloach Manos so that widows and orphans in Israel can receive a meaningful package to enjoy and know that they matter to Acheinu Bnei Yisroel around the world. Simchas Purim: One of the joys of Purim is watching boys and bucherim come to a home where they dance and sing as they raise money for Tzedakah. For these families that aren’t a destination for charity or fun, Tov V’Chesed arranges for groups of energetic bucherim who travel around and with their lively spirit, bring happiness and smiles into these homes. Even though Tov V’Chesed has a growing annual budget, the organization knows that these Purim services are vital to the recipients and need to be strengthened and improved. Now, Tov V’Chesed is turning to Jews around the world with a plea to help with this great cause and assist them in bringing Simcha to those who need it most. “Purim,” my friend Shiffy told me over the din of her blow dryer, “is my least favorite day of the year.” “Well, well,” I said, less than sympathetically. “Wrapping up fifteen shrink-wrapped mishloach manos with a dozen frosted apple cupcakes in each would also shift my attitude toward the day.”

Not to disparage those who roll out yards of red fondant to cover their To Teach Is To Touch a Life Forever apple cookies with the flourish of a connoisseur — not at all. It’s just that I was a teacher myself, and there were two things I most appreciated. The first were the notes — the heartwarming, beautiful words penned from the depths of the mothers’ hearts. The second thing was rectangular and green, or rectangular and white with a signature. (Out of fear of being attacked by those who claim that hardworking teachers are money-hungry, I will leave the latter as a riddle.) “Not that!” Shiffy interrupted my thoughts. “It is not about the patchkening. You know I love that. And anyway, I don’t have an issue with the before. It’s the day that makes me so stressed!” “I was going to mussar you on this earlier, but I got passionate about your passion. You shouldn’t be talking negatively about a yom tov. Or mitzvos. Or Yiddishe kinder.” Shiffy chuckled. “Alright, so Purim is not my favorite day. And that is to put it very mildly. Oish. Why did this piece of plastic crumple up like that? It looks like a wrinkled nonagenarian.” “If you’d only shut that blow dryer, I’d be able to give you the therapy session you are practically begging for.” Shiffy shut the blow dryer and began to regale me with her Purim horror stories. I heard all about the hardships of her husband getting drunk and about the embarrassment he caused. She shared how she needed to dip into her hard-earned savings to pay one of their hosts for the chandelier he’d broken and described in detail the mortification of having to clean up after her husband in some great-aunt’s gorgeous home (I quickly shushed her, don’t worry). Finally, I clucked sympathetically when she related how hard it was. “Really! It’s like these husbands who are always away! And then I’m all alone. And after the agonizingly long day, I trudge home all alone, my cranky children in tow, with my husband absolutely nowhere in sight. And, of course, he doesn’t even
hear his phone ring when I try reaching him!” “Oy, Shiffy. That’s really, really tough.” Although I could not relate to her, I felt really bad. Being many years older than me, Shiffy had quite a number of Purims under her belt. And they had obviously taken their toll on her. I had fared better. During shanah rishonah, my husband solemnly adhered to the no-drinking rule. The second year of our marriage, we ate the

My husband chose to stay in Boro Park, where his parents live, and make the rounds with his brothers. They’re a fun bunch and have a list of addresses they visit each and every Purim. I was more than happy to agree to this arrangement and returned with my peacock-costumed baby to my parents’ home. My siblings kept asking me if Chaim was drunk. “We want to see him on a high,” they insisted. Of course, there was no way for me to find out, especially since whenever I called him, the loud background music made it impossible to know. He did walk into my parents’ home at the end of the day talking with more exuberance than usual. Being that he was shy by nature, this

was a real treat for my young siblings who admired (and still do) their reserved new brotherin-law. Who knows what had transpired in Boro Park, I thought. But I chose to be happy that he’d come home looking like a mentch. Fast forward to the next year, when we started out on Purim morning at the home of a cousin. The atmosphere there was pretty somber for a Purim day, and there was a handful of even more somber guests around the table, which sported three low-alcohol bottles of wine. “Grape juice,” one guest said as he waved it away dismissively. On the way out my husband complained, “I was not yotzei with ad d’lo yada. I really was not.” There was so much pain in his voice; it was obvious that he meant every word. But selfish me was thrilled to be able to continue the route together with my husband, his balance intact, his behavior impeccable. When we were met with several inebriated, staggering men a few blocks down, my joy only multiplied. The following Purim was on a Friday. Between preparing for Shabbos and cleaning the house (which was nearly impossible with all the human traffic), I dressed up my kids and schlepped around town to deliver my beautiful mishloach manos. The first two hours, I had my
My children asked for Tatty, and inwardly, I asked for him, too. Where was the man? husband at my side. From door to door we went, glowing from the compliments we received on our progeny and their costumes — and our adorable matching mishloach manos, of course. My husband helped me maneuver the carriage through the mobs on the street and tended to my toddler when she complained that her costume was itchy. And then, after another few visits, my husband started “confirming” every two minutes that he wasn’t drunk, and I knew that something was very off. His voice, usually a polite nearwhisper, was now boisterous and blaring. Grabbing random people on the street and breaking out in a dance became the new norm of the day.

“Did you drink?” I inspected him warily. “Not much. My rosh hakollel gave me a cup before. But I’m not drunk. No worries.” Before long he was off with a group of tipsy yungerleit with a quick “Don’t wait for me. You can go home to make Shabbos.” I watched his receding back, his walk imbalanced and wobbly. Making my way home with two kvetchy kids, I thought back to the conversation I’d had with Shiffy. I can relate now, I thought bitterly. I arrived home an hour to the zman, stashed away the mishloach manos, speed-bathed my kids, and quickly showered while my kids were banging the door down. Luckily, I’d set the table for Shabbos before we left the house in the morning, and the hot plate was prepared, too. I then bentched licht, probably the most emotional one to date, and welcomed the Shabbos. My children asked for Tatty, and inwardly, I asked for him, too. Where was the man? Finally, after my kids had fallen asleep, when I was about to surrender to eating a meal on my own, I heard loud footsteps on the stairs leading to my door. Not Chaim, I thought. Because before my husband enters our home, I always hear his signature soft knock on the door. But apparently, alcohol can cause some major transformations in mankind. “Gut Shabbos!” he bellowed, the colorful sequins on his fedora, a paradox to the splendidly set Shabbos table, glistening. There was a suspicious whiff that came in with him, but his clothes appeared to be clean. “Gut Shabbos, gut Shabbos!” In a stupor, I stared at this unrecognizable human being, who was hopping a kedatchka in front of me. He was loud. Very loud. And wobbly and disheveled. “Ah, makeyam geven ad d’lo yada. Nuch vi!” His eyes shone and his face was alight. “What a mitzvah!” And in that split second, my mindset shifted. Comparing his genuinely pained expression from a year earlier to his ecstasy and joy from today, I made my decision. Next to his glowing face, walking home alone — clueless to his whereabouts and unable to reach him — suddenly wasn’t so bad. Because simply being mekayam a mitzvah was what brought him such joy! Every Purim, I enjoyed fretting over the mishloach manos, seudos yom tov, and the kids’ costumes, but my dear husband truly sought to fulfill the ad d’lo yada! How then could I deprive him of that joy?

Rhyme and Reason There is an intricate and beautiful balance that accompanies all aspects of Yiddishe life. Our calendar gives us the opportunity to experience each season and each emotion, fully, in its own time. It’s the symmetry that always inspires me. Four weeks before we encounter the yom tov of ultimate structure, we celebrate Purim — with her unbridled joy and unrestrained expression. And although there’s freedom and fun on this day, it’s grounded by the rules — because along with the rhythmic timing, there’s a reason for everything we do.
Counting Down For the past four weeks, we focused on what would — let’s face it — universally be called spring cleaning. We freshened our homes, and because of our undoubtedly pure intentions, managed to accumulate mitzvos in the process. But ultimately, those areas weren’t where the chometz was hiding. This week we head to the living room and dining room. Because of these rooms’ proximity to food, it is rather likely that chometz got in somewhere it shouldn’t have, making the washing up of these areas a halachic requirement. And, after all, it’s where we plan to host the Sedarim. Let’s break it down.

Sunday
Because of the way the china closet keeps its contents behind closed doors, we are often fooled into thinking we have to hold on to all we own. Add the fact that many of these items are more expensive, and it somehow lends credence to this mistaken notion. March 9
Rediscover the abundant space hiding in plain sight by getting rid of stuff that are quite literally stuffing without providing much use. It could be as big as a full set of china you never use or as small as your least favorite placemats or napkin rings. Remember: By letting go, you’re choosing to provide space in your life for things you truly love or use. BOOKS: Seforim will have their own day, but when looking through your other books (if you haven’t yet done them when cleaning your closets), if space is limited, only keep the books that you know family members will enjoy. A blow dryer on cool, or a vacuum on reverse, do well to drive out any food crumbs hiding in between the pages. PHOTOS: A picture is worth a thousand words — but not if you can’t find it. With technology not all that trustworthy, print those pictures (but don’t do it now)! Remember those sweet childhood memories of browsing through family photos? Gift your kids that experience! Chronological order is the easiest way to organize your photos, but only hold on to those that are decent shots and contain worthwhile memories. For optimum organization, try shoe boxes or simple photo albums.
Monday March 10
Taanis Esther
If the seforim in your home are usually cleaned by the men, on Taanis Esther, they might be bored enough to actually complete the task. But if there is no time to do it all today, suggest fifteen minutes a day over the course of a few days. Fifteen minutes have a way of seeming reasonably conquerable, and in less than a week, the task can be completely done.
Wednesday March 12
Shushan Purim
This day will be focused on packing away and washing up, but some of the kids might be itching for something accomplishing to do. How about the dining room and living room walls? Walls, especially within children’s reach, are halachically required to be washed. But why stop there? Using the miracle mop, with a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth attached, is a great way to quickly and easily get fresh, clean walls. For the woodwork around the room, work with a microfiber cloth, magic eraser (for the scuff marks), and the occasional toothbrush. This area will be chometz-free in no time!

PESACH CLEANING
Thursday
For today’s task, here’s my favorite — and still easiest — silver-polishing approach. (A second pair of hands will make this task even easier!) March 13
1. Fill your largest pot with water, and allow it to come to a boil while you do step two. 2. Wearing disposable rubber gloves, proceed with the polish rub. (If you’re employing standard silver polish, open the windows for fresh air circulation. Those fumes are noxious!) 3. After the silver polish dries, dunk each piece in the stillboiling water. (Wear thick rubber gloves and use tongs for whichever pieces possible.) Smaller items should be dunked while in a mesh sieve. 4. As soon as the silver piece is removed from the water, wipe it with a clean, dry towel. You’ll love the results!
WEEK 4
OF THE EIGHT-WEEK COUNTDOWN
Friday
Our first long Friday of the season gives us the opportunity to accomplish a lot! Today we’ll do the windows and blinds, as well as the light fixtures in this area of the house. March 14
The “mitten approach” can make quick work of your blinds and light fixtures. White cotton socks, lightly dampened with a mild detergent and pulled over your hands, will give you a firmer and more nimble grip on all you clean. For crystal fixtures, wear a disposable rubber glove underneath the sock that’s dampened with the window cleaning detergent. A dry sock on your other hand will provide the polish and sparkle l’kavod yom tov.

Life at a Glance MENACHEM, age 24: works in sales LEAH, age 23: runs her own business sewing custom gowns and dresses ARON, age 3.5 MIRIAM, 18 months Both kids are in daycare. In the past year, Leah has had to cut down on work because Miriam has been sick a lot. Menachem’s job isn’t bringing in enough to cover, and their debts are catching up with them. Real numbers and real facts. Identifying details have been changed to protect privacy.
Recap: Menachem switches over to a full-time job. Leah brings in more money than planned. The coach gives them a self-reflection questionnaire so they can rate themselves as employees.
Leah: Taking charge of our finances has affected every area of our lives. Obviously, the tight budget in itself is a challenge, but it isn’t so different than being maxed out (can’t buy anything that way, either!) and is a lot less stressful, besides. What I’m really talking about is the spillover. I call it the doormat effect. You know the book about the lady who bought a new doormat — and then decided her door needs new paint, because it looked so shabby near the new mat? And then she painted the inside hallway, and got new mirrors, and so on, until before you know it, her entire house has been remodeled… So that’s what I feel has happened as a result of showing up and taking responsibility: Our whole lives are getting a makeover. Here’s how things are changing for the better: • Menachem wakes up earlier, davens and goes to work, instead of hanging around the house until noon, worrying that he’s no good at sales… He even got a new chavrusa
Coach’s Take Wow, Menachem and Leah, your hard work is really paying off! I see this with my clients all the time. When they step up to the plate and start focusing on solutions, they end up finding solutions for lots of other areas in their lives, instead of blaming everyone else for their issues.
March 4, 2020 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 117 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
in the morning • Menachem is taking responsibility for the budget and the money; I feel like such a huge load has been taken off my shoulders! • Menachem also stopped feeling like everyone owes us something and that the rich guys should share with us poor people, and instead he’s working toward not being poor anymore. • He feels less stressed, so he’s playing more with the kids. Even though he works longer hours, it feels like he’s actually home more, because he’s present when he is here. • We put a limit on sesame chicken (only twice a month) so Menachem eats my food lately. It feels so good to serve him again, and to actually eat together! • Working out our budget together makes Menachem and I feel like a team, and our communication has gotten a lot better across the board. • We are careful to keep blame out of our lives and to cheer each other on through the hard days. • Structure and responsibility are seeping into other areas of our lives: We both are focusing on eating more healthfully, and Menachem decided to cut beer out of the budget because it costs too much (we used to buy a large case more than once a month!). • Menachem is also talking about kicking his smoking habit. He’s tried a couple of times before, but now he feels like the financial aspect will give him that extra push he needs.
Coach’s Take Cutting out takeout food was a big help for Menachem and Leah’s budget — but it seems to be doing very well for them in terms of quality time and physical health, as well!
Coach’s Take If you have a bad habit or addiction that’s costing you money (smoking, alcohol, lotteries, etc.) make sure to write the actual numbers into the budget instead of saying, “I’m going to stop soon…” This way, at least you’ll know what to expect, moneywise. And, for many of our clients, just seeing how much they’re actually spending has been the wakeup call to help them quit.

Smile to me!
Spread the happiness! (But be careful) Would you believe that this innocent happy circle is actually copyrighted? That means you can’t just use its little sunny face commercially without its being licensed to your brand!
At first, State Mutual distributed 100 smiley pins among their employees, as well as big smiley posters, but the buttons became so popular that the company was soon getting orders for lots by the thousands! By 1971, just eight years after the icon had come to life, over 50 million smiley face buttons had been sold.
So who owns it?
First came the original... In 1963, U.S. graphic artist Harvey Ross Ball was working on a campaign for an insurance company in his hometown of Worcester, Massachusetts. The company who’d hired him, State Mutual, had recently undergone a merger, which had led to low company morale, and Ball was tasked with creating an image to boost their employees’ spirits. A few strokes and ten minutes later, the iconic smiley face was born. With its oval eyes, one bigger than the other, arced mouth, and yellow blast of sunshine, the design was so simple, yet it quickly made its happy mark on the world. Who can resist the simple joy? Definitely not kids, and even the insurance executives couldn’t — they smiled right back! Diving into a friendship campaign, the company used their new symbol to make employees smile while working and while helping customers over the phone.
An original Harvey Ball smiley face

The designer’s dollars Despite the happy impact his work had internationally, Ball never applied for a copyright or trademark for his design, and neither did State Mutual. Ball’s total gain was the $45 he was paid for his work (that’s $377.90 in 2020 purchasing power), and the knowledge that he made so many smile. Charles Ball, Harvey Ross Ball’s son, is reported to have said about his father that he never regretted his decision not to copyright his design. “He was not a money-driven guy,” were the words attributed to Charles Ball in Telegram & Gazette, who also said that his father would say, “Hey, I can only eat one steak at a time, drive one car at a time.” Ball did take his smiles further, though, founding the World Smile Foundation in 1999, a non-profit charitable trust that supports children’s causes.
By: Shevy Hollander
Smiles are contagious And how! By 1970, Bernard and Murray Spain enhanced the original smiley face by adding the words “Have A Happy Day.” More business savvy, apparently, they bought the legal rights to both their image and the words.
The happy face even made it onto a postage stamp!
From pleasure to business In 1971, journalist Franklin Loufrani created a smiley that very closely resembled Ball’s iconic face, for use in a French newspaper to indicate which articles contained good news. Even before he published it, Loufrani registered his smiley face with the French trademark office, and by the 1990s, Loufrani and his son, Nicholas Loufrani, already held trademarks for their smiley in 70 countries! They established the Smiley Company in London, and soon earned millions off the Smiley brand and by licensing their trademark to famous brands.

Two smileys — and lots of frowns
Know anyone Looking for her Bashert? Ready to approach this subject with an open mind? This might be the hidden treasure!
In 1997, their reach extended to the U.S., when Loufrani filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, not only for their design, but even for the term “smiley.” But they had one very adamant contender. Wal-Mart, which actively used a simple happy face to alert customers to deals, resisted the move by trying to block the Smile Company’s trademark application, alleging that Loufrani’s smiley face was not distinctive enough to qualify as a trademark, that their design would cause consumer confusion, and that they, WalMart, had prior rights to its own smiley design. Wal-Mart then attempted to trademark their smiley face. Loufrani didn’t take this meekly, and they sued to stop Wal-Mart’s trademark application, alleging that their logo was “readily distinguishable” from Wal-Mart’s. The case dragged on, and in 2011, when Wal-Mart and Loufrani’s Smiley Company finally settled their ten-year dispute, the terms remained confidential… But what is clear is that both parties continue to use their smileys.

Smile to the world, and the world smiles back!
This might be the answer for the girl that has been looking for her match.
It was Ball’s World Smile Foundation that established the first Friday in October as World Smile Day. Especially popular in the smiley’s birthplace of Worcester, Massachusetts, the day is devoted to smiles and the spreading of acts of kindness.

There are many ways to celebrate this day: handing out smiley face stickers, giving smiles to anyone you encounter, sharing a funny joke, playing happy songs, and doing random kind deeds and other happy acts. But why wait until October? Make every day a smile day!
