WHEN SECONDHAND IS NOT RECOMMENDED (Re: The Stuff Exchange, Issue 26) I was touched to see your giveaway list. How beautiful it is that others are so willing to share the items they no longer need. I wanted to point out, though, that using a secondhand car seat may compromise its safety. The first reason not to use a car seat that has been used before is that you can never be sure of its history — the interior components of a car seat that has been involved in a crash may have been damaged, even though the seat looks perfect from the outside. Another reason to be careful is that each car seat has an expiration date, after which it may not be as effective in protection, and the owner’s manual would be needed to know when it expires. Concerned About Safety

BIT BY BIT IS DOABLE (Re: Bite-Size Pesach Cleaning) Your bite-size Pesach cleaning program is awesome! I had two simchos this past week, but I still managed to take a half-hour every day to do my task. Thank you for getting me so motivated to do a mitzvah b’simcha and b’shleimos. I can’t wait to see your future ideas. I can just imagine how incredibly creative they’ll be! FAMILIAR-LOOKING PACKAGES Looking through my mishloach manos pile, it was easy to see how popular The Boro Park View is! I received delicious muffin babkes, cookie sticks, carrot muffins and homemade liqueur! And they all looked rather familiar... A Proud Reader

TAKES THE CAKE (Re: Cupcakes!, Issue 22) First, I have to compliment you on a magazine that’s superb! The entire family gets to enjoy it every week. The thought and work put into each and every article is evident. Also, I must compliment you on the recipe section. We celebrated my nine-year-old’s birthday with the delicious glazed cupcakes recently featured. They were fluffy, moist and delicious, just like the recipe mentioned! We still hope to try the fudge cupcakes, too. Thank you so much. Mrs. Esty Friedman

(Re: And Everyone Was Gawking, Issue 08) This letter is quite late in coming, and I apologize. Being that it took time and thought to write, it kept being relegated to the procrastination pile. Ruchy Reese wrote an article about someone being taken to the hospital by Hatzolah and how everyone was watching. This touched a raw nerve in me. It’s been 38 years, and I can still feel the humiliation and embarrassment I felt when I had a sudden life-threatening emergency and had to be rushed to a hospital in Manhattan to have an emergency procedure done. As we emerged from my house, I was lying on a stretcher, and I thought I would die from embarrassment. There were so many people outside the house, standing and watching us in our time of fear and distress. Worst of all, the crowd of spectators was not only limited to children! I vividly recall covering my face, thinking that perhaps if I couldn’t see the people, then maybe they couldn’t see me either. Where is the feeling of v’ahavta l’re’acha kamocha? Klal Yisroel is so great in so many middos. What about thinking how you would feel in such a case, with a whole block of neighbors stretching out their necks to see exactly what’s going on? Please, I beg of you. Next time you witness a Hatzolah call on your block, r”l, keep walking — and do something constructive: Say a kapitel of Tehillim for the person. It will be much more helpful for both of you! S.T.

PA RS H A S VAYA K H E L- P E K U D E I This week’s parsha begins, “Vayakhel Moshe es kal adas bnei Yisroel vayomer aleihem eileh hadevarim asher tzivah Hashem la’asos osam. Sheishes yamim tei’aseh melacha u’vayom hashvi’i yih’yeh lachem kodesh‌ lo s’va’aru aish b’chol moshvoseichem b’yom haShabbos — And Moshe called all the community of Bnei Yisroel to assemble, and said to them, ‘These are the words that Hashem has commanded that you should do them. Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day shall be holy for you‌ You shall not kindle a fire in any of your dwelling places on the Shabbos dayâ€? (Shemos 35:2-3). At a time when we are being told that we must practice “social distancing,â€? our parsha opens with Moshe Rabbeinu calling upon Klal Yisroel to assemble together, and Moshe begins to teach Klal Yisroel the halachos of Shabbos. Shabbos is the source of all blessing. The mahn that fell in the desert was wrapped in a layer of tal (dew). The gematria of tal is 39, an allusion to the 39 melachos of labor. The mahn did not fall on Shabbos, which hints that the 39 melachos are forbidden on Shabbos. This is also a hint to the fact that our sustenance comes in the merit of our keeping Shabbos. While we do not work for parnassah on Shabbos, Shabbos is the source of our sustenance all week, as the Zohar Hakadosh states, “The six days of the week receive their blessings from Shabbos.â€? R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlitâ€?a, cites the Chasam Sofer, ztâ€?l, that Hashem wishes to bestow upon us great blessings, but we need a ves-

sel in order to receive the blessings. Chazal say, “Hakadosh Baruch Hu found no vessel that could contain blessing for Yisroel other than peace (Mishnah Uktzim 3:12). The vessel of peace is hinted at in the parsha as well, as we noted above: “You shall not kindle a fire in any of your dwelling places on the Shabbos day. The greatest peace in Klal Yisroel is when we achieve total unity. When Klal Yisroel assembled together at the base of Har Sinai to receive the Torah, we achieved such a great level of achdus that we were k’ish echad b’lev echad (Rashi on Shemos 19:2). At the time that Klal Yisroel received the Torah, we were not only brought together physically, but we were united in our hearts. We are presently facing a difficult and painful situation whereby we are increasingly being forced apart physically. Therefore, we must work to be unified in our hearts. We can still be k’ish echad b’lev echad. The Zohar Hakadosh notes that there are 600,000 osiyos in the Torah. The Megaleh Amukos explains that this number corresponds to the 600,000 Yiddishe neshamos. Likewise, the letters of the name Yisroel stand for “yesh shishim ribbui osiyos la’Torah. Just as if even one letter is missing from a sefer Torah, the entire sefer Torah is pasul, so, too, is every person essential to Klal Yisroel. R’ Paysach Krohn explains that there are no words in the Torah containing fewer than two letters, indicating that none of us can stand alone. We need each other. How can we come together if we are kept physically apart? We should always have in mind all of Klal Yisroel when we daven. Learning Torah is essential, as not only is it our protection, but it is our common cause, as it says, “Torah tzivah lanu Moshe morasha kehillas Yaakov – The Torah that Moshe commanded us is the heritage of the congregation of Yaakov (Devarim 33:4). Also, we should work to achieve peace, as this is not only the source of unity but is also the vessel through which we can receive Hashem’s mercy. We should work to forgive people and not harbor grudges against anyone. We should also keep in mind anyone who might feel disconnected from Klal Yisroel in any way, chas v’shalom. If we know of anyone who may be lonely or isolated, now would be a great time to pick up the phone and make that connection. May we all strive to achieve true achdus, and in that zechus may Hashem remove this harsh decree from upon us.

State of Emergency Declared to Combat Coronavirus Pandemic Closed shuls, shuttered schools, social distancing and tefillos for those who are ill have become the new norm as the coronavirus continues to wreak havoc worldwide. New York State has been particularly hard hit, its 950 confirmed cases as of Monday night earning it the dubious distinction as the COVID-19 capital of the United States. As of Monday, 462 people had tested positive for coronavirus in New York City, including Brooklyn Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein, two patients at Maimonides Hospital, the longtime Jewish community liaison at NYU Langone Medical Center, and a Boro Park woman who heard the megillah on Purim at the Koruv Shul at 19th Avenue and 59th Street. Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Sunday that all city schools would remain closed through at least April 20, and several local yeshivos closed their doors as well for an unspecified amount of time, including Bais Yaakov of Boro Park, Bobov, Bais Yaakov D’Rav Meir and Yeshiva and Mesivta Toras Emes. By Monday afternoon, Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered all private schools statewide to shut

down by Wednesday until April 1 and advised all businesses to close by 8 p.m. nightly with the exception of grocery stores, gas stations, pharmacies and medical facilities. Corona concerns also affected local shuls, with Khal Shaarei Zion Bobov sending out a letter on Sunday morning advising those over 60 and anyone with underlying health issues to daven at home and not to come into the beis midrash, while cautioning all others to daven

in smaller minyanim and practice social distancing. The Bikur Cholim room at NYU Hospital is closed for an unspecified amount of time, and with a new law enacted on Monday banning all gatherings of more than 50 people, Boro Park 24 posted a list of nine weddings taking place that same day, which were moved up several hours in order to avoid the new restrictions. De Blasio has been holding multiple media availabilities per day, noting on Monday that the continuously evolving situation is unprecedented, adding, “This is going to be going on for quite a while, so this is really unchartered territory.” Preparing for a large number of coronavirus patients who will need medical care, the mayor said that the city will be converting multiple facilities into temporary hospitals, including a recently built and unoccupied Brooklyn nursing home, with parking lots and cafeterias also being eyed as potential makeshift medical centers. De Blasio said that the city will continue to add more coronavirus testing sites in the coming days, with Chai Urgent Care on 14th Avenue and 38th Street performing the tests in an outdoor tent just outside their facility as well as at their Williamsburg, Staten Island, Lakewood and Jackson locations. According to Hamodia, testing is also available at Asisa Urgent Care’s two Boro Park locations on 43rd Street and 15th Avenue, and 18th Avenue and 59th Street, from 4 p.m. until midnight, as well as at its Williamsburg branch from 9 a.m. to midnight. Asisa’s medical director Dr. Giuseppina Feingold said that three patients tested positive for the coronavirus and warned that only those experiencing symptoms or who have been exposed to a confirmed case of COVID-19 should come in for testing, noting that all others risk possible infection. In a rare move, the governors of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut issued a joint directive on the virus, taking a regional approach to more effectively slow the virus in the entire tri-state area, following the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control. The three governors handed down uniform standards intended to limit crowds for social and recreational purposes, which went into effect on Monday night, prohibiting gatherings of 50 or more people, transitioning restaurants from dine-in service to takeout only, and temporarily closing theaters, gyms and casinos. “This is not a war that can be won alone, which is why New York is partnering with our neighboring states to implement a uniform standard that not only keeps our people safe but also prevents ‘state shopping,’ where residents of one state travel to another, and vice versa,”

Make Your Own Hand Sanitizer Empty store shelves have become a common sight over the past week, and shortages have been reported on items ranging from bottled water to paper towels and just about everything in between. Hand sanitizer, a convenient way of eradicating 99.99% of germs when soap and water are not available or practical, has become increasingly difficult to find, but is surprisingly easy to make on your own. Hand sanitizer consists of nothing more than two commonly found ingredients: isopropyl alcohol, a basic first-aid supply, and aloe vera gel, used for relieving burns. The recipe takes just minutes to make, according to Business Insider.

said Governor Andrew Cuomo. The effects of the coronavirus are being felt in Jewish communities throughout the Northeast. New Jersey’s closure of all public and private schools statewide had Bais Medrash Govoha taking the unprecedented step of shutting down as of Wednesday, though efforts were underway to find alternate locations where learning could continue in state-sanctioned groups of 50 people or less. In the Five Towns, over a dozen shuls have closed, while the Vaad HaRabbanim in Baltimore and the Rabbinical Council of Bergen County both announced the closure of all local shuls, cautioning residents to daven alone and not to arrange home minyanim. Hoarding regulations went into effect for a five-day period in the Monsey area after panicked consumers ravaged store shelves, with residents limited to buying just two units of each item on a long list of restricted products, including cleaning supplies, toiletries, medicines, bottled water, frozen foods, dry goods and gallons of milk, and a limit of four pounds per day was also imposed on items including fresh meat, produce, fish and deli. Shortages were reported in stores throughout Brooklyn, with many shelves completely bare on Thursday night, sending customers into a state of panic. In a letter to his constituents, Senator Simcha Felder issued a reminder about the best practices to put into effect to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, such as frequent hand-washing and avoiding handshaking and crowded gatherings. Other precautionary measures include telecommuting whenever possible, covering any coughs or sneezes with a tissue to be discarded immediately, and avoiding touching the eyes, mouth and

nose with unwashed hands. Felder advised anyone experiencing potential coronavirus symptoms such as a cough, sore throat or fever to call their doctor and not to go in for an appointment without prior approval in order to avoid infecting others. He also suggested contacting the state’s 24-hour coronavirus hotline at 1-888-3643065 with any questions. “The fear and worry generated by coronavirus appear to be spreading more quickly than the virus itself,” observed Felder. “It is easier to stay calm when we have a direct line to the information we need.”

Recap: Ulush gives birth to a baby girl. While she is in the hospital, Edo receives a certificate from the Jewish orphanage and leaves to Eretz Yisroel, without Ulush having a chance to say goodbye to him. Janek tells Ulush that Gustav has been found lying in the street, ill with pneumonia, and is in the same hospital as Ulush. Ulush sneaks up to the pediatric ward to try to see him. “That’s right,” the nurse agreed with Ulush. “I wanted to check if you knew what you were talking about, or if you were just disoriented. The child that you are looking for is here, near the window.” Ulush’s eyes turned to the bed the nurse was pointing to. She gazed at Gustav’s white face and his half-closed eyes. “Yes,” she said, a lump in her throat. “Yes, that’s him.” “What’s his name?” the nurse asked. “Gustav,” Ulush said. She bent over the child. “Gustav? Gustav, it’s Ulush. Do you hear me?” The boy’s eyelids flickered a bit, but didn’t rise. She studied the tiny part of his pupils that she could see. It was hard to figure out what he was looking at, but it certainly wasn’t her. “Gustav?” she whispered a third time. He coughed in response. She turned to the nurse who was standing behind her. “Can he speak?” “Until now he hasn’t said a word.” “And… what is his condition?” The nurse shrugged. “Not good,” she said, and lowered her voice. “If he comes out of this, it will be a big miracle.” Ulush turned back to the bed, fearfully looking at Gustav’s pale face. “Do you know how worried I was about you, Gustav?” she whispered. “Where did you go?

Why didn’t you come home that day? Janek went to look for you, and other people did too… Edo was so sad that you disappeared. Do you know how much he loves you?” She blinked. “Then Edo also left. Do you know where he is? He’s sailing on a ship now to Eretz Yisroel. You will also get well and go to Eretz Yisroel, right? Maybe you will come with us, with me and Janek. And there we will meet Edo and lots of other good Jews. You want to go, don’t you?” The boy coughed again, deeper this time than before. “In Eretz Yisroel there are beautiful houses that glitter, as if they are made of gold. And they have shiny red roofs, like ruby stones. They have big fields with wheat and barley and all of the shivas haminim, and children can run in the shining sun and pick lots and lots of golden apples. Do you know what a golden apple is? “And the sky is so blue… and the wind sings beautiful songs of holiness... Anyone who lives in the Holy Land has to be a tzaddik, because it’s impossible to be in the land of Hakadosh Baruch Hu, near Yerushalayim and Kever Rochel, otherwise.” The boy’s face grew red, as if he was trying to cough again, but couldn’t. The nurse

brought over a cup of water, and Ulush fed the water to him, spoonful by spoonful. His eyes remained closed, even tighter perhaps than they’d been before, but he slurped the water thirstily. “And the water there has such a wonderful taste, because it is a blessed land. The bread and the fruit and everything that is there are the most special in the world. You want to get better and come with us to Eretz Yisroel, don’t you, Gustav? To drink the water there, to eat the holy fruits, and to play with our new baby? In the end, little Edo didn’t come to sail boats on the water with him in the rubble of the destroyed house. Too bad. He had to give him the paper. It said that Edo’s name was really Yosef Ludmir, and that he had uncles in Eretz Yisroel. But now Edo was already on a big ship — a real one, not a paper one — on his way to Eretz Yisroel. How would he find his uncles without that paper? The paper may have gotten terribly wet in the water, because it was in his pocket. He was not sure that anyone could still read what it said. Maybe Edo would be angry at him. But Edo couldn’t be angry at him. If he wouldn’t have asked Theodore to take Edo in, then Theodore would have left little Edo in his mother’s arms, and the Nazis would have killed him.

Anyway, he thought the paper might still be all right, because the water didn’t reach all the way to his pants pocket. His feet had gotten dreadfully wet when he had sat on the floor in the rubble, but perhaps the inside of his pocket had stayed a little dryer. He would continue to take very good care of the paper, and would bring it to Edo. Yes, he would also travel there, to Eretz Yisroel, together with Janek and Ulush. He would go with them on a ship, and he would be able to see the beautiful skies of Eretz Yisroel and the houses that glittered like gold. And together with Edo, he would pick all the different fruits and species that Ulush was talking about, and the golden apples. Now he just had to get well. THE WEEK after the incident with Tzippy, Miri invited Binyamin for Shabbos. Tzippy had actually answered the phone for her — finally! — and they had chatted briefly, without either of them mentioning the visit to Zeidy. The conversation was decent, but Miri still couldn’t bring herself to invite Tzippy for Shabbos. After all, Yaakov was right. How could she invite her sister and brother-in-law for a standard Shabbos seudah in a kollel home, knowing that they ate gourmet meals on a much higher standard on a daily basis? She just couldn’t.

Ima hadn’t been feeling well, and she’d apologized that she wasn’t inviting anyone for this Shabbos. But Miri had decided that she wanted to invite someone. She didn’t even know why it was so important to her, but Yaakov was pleased with the idea of having guests. And so Binyamin was chosen. He also liked the idea, and showed up half an hour before Shabbos with a small bag, smiling sheepishly. “Come inside,” Miri invited him in warmly. “You’ll sleep in the dining room, okay? Usually the light stays on there all night, but now Yaakov set a Shabbos clock to go off after the seudah so you’ll be able to sleep.” He put down his bag and helped himself to some of the cake that Miri had prepared for him. There wasn’t much time left to Shabbos. Miri bentched licht, and the men waited for her to finish. “Good Shabbos,” she wished them as they got ready to leave for shul. She didn’t get much done after that: She set the small table, stopping twice in the middle to take care of Shmuely, and then davened Maariv. By then the men were back, smiling widely; they seemed to really be enjoying each other’s company. They made Kiddush, ate the first course, and sang zemiros together. Listening to the divrei Torah, Miri found herself thoroughly enjoying the harmony between her husband and her brother. But while she was in the kitchen ladling out soup, that harmony seemed to hit a rut. “That’s too much!” she heard Yaakov say, half-laughing, halfchiding. “Totally overboard.” Binyamin sounded defensive. “Why is it overboard? You’ve never heard of anyone who does it?” “Not people your age. And if they do…” Yaakov groped for the right words. “If they do, then

they’re not the... standard bachurim.” “What’s wrong with being a non-standard bachur? As long as I learn well, and I’m on time to my sedarim, and I stick to the rules of the yeshivah — then what’s wrong with it? Yes, I admit that I do want to make a little money. Until Tzippy’s wedding I had one hat for both Shabbos and weekday, and it looks that way. Now I got a new hat, and I want it to stay in good

“My goodness, who died?” She came back to the table. “You couldn’t find anything else to talk about now? Things more suitable for Shabbos?” “I purposely waited until you went to the kitchen,” Binyamin said, “because I wanted to share it with Yaakov without you overhearing. But now I see that I shouldn’t have said anything to him either.” He smiled at his brother-in-law. “And listen, Yaakov: For now, don’t say anything to my parents about this, okay? If I decide to continue with it, I’ll tell them myself.” “Continue with what?” Miri demanded. “It makes no difference. Yaakov, let’s sing something.” “Oh, no, you don’t! Don’t go evading me like that.” Miri stood firm. “And it’s really a shame that the soup is getting cold in the kitchen.” “Miri, you’d be better off hearing about it after you eat,” Yaakov said, with a humorous twinkle in his eye. “You don’t want to ruin your appetite. And I think it would be even better if you heard about it tomorrow morning and not two hours before going to sleep.” She was about to say something, but then she smiled in resignation and went back to the kitchen. She returned a few moments later with the soup bowls arranged on a tray. They didn’t talk about Binyamin’s secret for the rest of the course, and it looked like he was making every effort to have them forget the whole story. “You know something?” he remarked as Miri served some fruit for dessert. “This afternoon, before I came here, I visited Zeidy. He asked me to get him another blanket because he was cold, and one of the staff members sent me to the storage room at the end of the hall. I went into the room,

shape, so I want to buy another one for weekday. Is that such a bad thing to want?” “Not at all.” “So then what’s the problem?” “The fact that you go out so late and stay up full nights — that’s a big problem. Second of all, this ‘work,’ as much as it’s chesed shel emes and all that, just doesn’t sound like a good thing for a bachur your age. It might even be harmful. Third of all, the fact that you are looking for ways to earn money is… I don’t know… not the best thing…” Miri abandoned the bowls in favor of the kitchen doorway. “So it’s a good thing you’re not the one who has to know about what I do.” Binyamin was a bit sharp, but his tone was laced with humor. “Because when all is said and done, my dear brother-inlaw, you’re just my oldest brotherin-law and that’s all. Besides, I do think that this little encounter with the realities of life is good for my ruchnius. Death is something that we should all remember all the time.” Realities of life? Death? What had Binyamin found to do with his nights? What on earth were they talking about?

and someone was standing there arranging blankets on shelves. Suddenly, on a table on the side I saw these two furry stuffed animals that looked like dogs. I asked the man if I could have a blanket, and as I spoke, I thought I saw one of the toy dogs moving! “The man answered me, and the animal stopped moving. And as we are talking about which kind of blanket Zeidy wanted, and who my grandfather is, and which room he’s in — I kept looking at this toy dog. Was it moving, or was I just imagining it? Suddenly, as the man found me the right blanket and handed it to me, this ‘stuffed animal’ gave a little bark and jumped onto him! It really was a dog! I never saw such a tiny dog in my whole life! And then the second dog woke up…” “I also saw those dogs when I visited Zeidy last week!” Miri exclaimed as she cut an orange segment into three pieces. “It’s so strange that they let those animals into the nursing home, isn’t it?” “I don’t know… And the guy explained to me that they are actually quite aggressive creatures, since they feel like they have to constantly be on the defensive because of their size.” “Or lack thereof,” Yaakov said with a chuckle. “Right. And they only act normally if they’re given the right training from early on. But I think Zeidy likes the guy. I heard them talking when the man came to give him the blanket. He’s a good person, I think.” “That’s the main thing,” Miri concluded. “Or is the main thing that you managed to change the subject from your mysterious new job? Although based on what I heard from before, I think I don’t mind dropping that conversation for now…” To be continued...

Biden and Sanders Debate Amid Coronavirus Outbreak THE PULSE: Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders faced off

against each other in their first one-on-one debate. The debate, initially scheduled to take place in Phoenix, Arizona, was moved to Washington, D.C., due to coronavirus concerns. There was no audience present, and one of the moderators, Jorge Ramos, had to pull out due to exposure to the virus.

64 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 18, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

THE DEBATE: Both candidates used the platform of

the debate to blast the Trump administration’s handling of the COVID-19 outbreak. They also focused on health care and environmental concerns. Biden, taking on the role of the de facto nominee, directed much of his criticism toward President Trump and, at times, even struck a conciliatory tone with Sanders. THE IMPACT: The debate was likely Sanders’ last

chance to strike a blow at Biden’s candidacy. Biden currently leads Sanders 860 to 706 in the delegate count. A Biden implosion would essentially be Bernie’s best chance to regain his political momentum. However, Biden held his own and fended off many of Sanders’ attacks. It is unlikely that the results of this debate will fundamentally change the trajectory of the campaign.

Administration Under Pressure for COVID-19 Response THE PULSE: The Trump administration has

been on the receiving end of much criticism for its response to the coronavirus. Much of the criticism has been directed against the president for his initial reaction of downplaying the threat of the virus and for his administration’s failure to procure adequate testing kits. Many have also criticized the president for spreading inaccurate information regarding the illness and for muddling the administration’s policies to contain it. In early comments, the president repeatedly insisted that the virus was under control and that it posed a threat similar to that of the seasonal flu. He intimated that the hype around the virus was the work of Democrats and the media with the intent to take him down. In a recent speech, intended to calm a jittery nation, the president appeared to announce that all travel from Europe would be shut down, and that cargo shipments of goods would be halted. He also said that copays and deductibles would be waived for coronavirus treatment. In the hours after the speech, the administration was forced to clarify that the travel policy does not apply to U.S. citizens arriving from Europe, that the ban does not apply to goods and cargo, and that copays and deductibles are being waived for coronavirus testing but not treatment. THE IMPACT: Americans understand that the situation regarding COVID-19 is unprecedented and fluid. Many will understandably not hold the president accountable for what appears to be the inevitable spread of the disease in the United States. However, the president will need to account for how he deals with the impending crisis. It is imperative that his messaging is accurate and correct and not hyperbolic or merely wishful thinking. Trump did act decisively in shutting down travel from China when the virus first broke, but evidently, that was not enough. Friday’s bipartisan Emer-

gency Relief Bill that the administration helped draft and support is likely the kind of political leadership that Americans are looking for at this time of national need.

Bipartisan Emergency Bill Passes the House THE PULSE: An emergency bill to help address the

coronavirus crisis passed the House with strong bipartisan support. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin hammered out the details of the bill. The bill includes mandated paid sick leave for many workers. It increases funding for food assistance programs and provides funding for free coronavirus testing. The legislation is expected to pass the Senate and be signed into law by the president. THE IMPACT: The bill is a rare act of bipartisanship

in a bitterly divided Washington. The bill passed 363-40 with one abstention by Independent Representative Justin Amash. Those who opposed the bill argued that it was passed in haste and that there was no accurate estimate of the real costs involved. Those who supported the bill stressed that it provides crucial aid for the health of the country and that it provides vital economic assistance to many Americans. Equally important is the message it sends that Congress is capable of addressing the pressing issues of the day and is not paralyzed by partisan gridlock. The administration signaled that this was not necessarily the last relief bill and that another bill with aid for airlines and cruise companies suffering from the economic downturn may also be in the offing.

Iran-Proxy Strikes U.S. Base on Soleimani’s Birthday THE PULSE: On Wednesday, the birthday of Qasem

Soleimani, Iranian proxy forces attacked Camp Taji, a U.S. base to the north of Baghdad, and killed two American soldiers and a British serviceman. The

66 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 18, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

attack also wounded fourteen others. The U.S. retaliated with attacks against Kata’ib Hezbollah, the Iraqi-based Iranian proxy that the U.S. accused of carrying out the attacks. On Saturday, Kata’ib Hezbollah once again fired rockets at Camp Taji and wounded three American military personnel. The American response to Kata’ib Hezbollah received a sharp rebuke from the Iraqi government, which called it a “violation of Iraqi national sovereignty.” THE IMPACT: President Trump portrayed the killing of Qasem Soleimani as an act of deterrence that would dissuade Iran from future attacks against U.S. troops, bases and embassies. Trump has staked his foreign policy on the limited but effective use of U.S. power. If Trump’s strategy proves effective, it could serve to bolster his foreign policy credentials ahead of the upcoming election. However, should the policy prove ineffective in halting Iran’s aggression and should tension with the Iraqi government continue to rise, it will be harder for Trump to argue that his policies have had the desired effect.

Louisiana and Georgia Postpone Primaries THE PULSE: Louisiana announced that it was postponing its primary scheduled for early April to June. Georgia also announced that it would be postponing its primary. The postponement of these elections is due to coronavirus fears. The March 17 primaries in Arizona, Florida, Ohio and Illinois are all scheduled to proceed as planned. Many voters have chosen to vote by mail to avoid social gatherings at polling places. Illinois broke a World War II-era record for mail-in ballots. THE IMPACT: Biden leads in polling in all these

states. Sanders is struggling in Florida, as many voters there are highly critical of his past comments regarding the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. If Biden can win convincingly in these primary contests, the primary race may effectively come to an end as campaigning in the age of the coronavirus has become exceedingly difficult, and Sanders will have no realistic path to the nomination. Ultimately, the primaries in Georgia and Louisiana may not be necessary at all.

Chewy Meringue Pops With Praline Filling 78 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 18, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

Making your own praline is an exciting process and so rewarding. Sandwich it between these meringue cookies, and get ready for a treat that’s chewy, yummy and festive! Thank you, Leah Stern, for being the inspiration behind this recipe. Meringue Cookies Ingredients 4 egg whites

Praline Ingredients 1½ cups chopped filberts

1 cup sugar 1 cup finely chopped walnuts

¾ cup sugar 1 T. water

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 250°. 2. Line baking sheets. Beat egg whites until stiff. Slowly add sugar. Turn off the mixer and gently fold in the nuts. Drop spoonfuls into round mounds on the cookie sheet. Bake for 50 minutes.

Chocolate Drizzle Ingredients 3 T. confectioners’ sugar 2 T. cocoa 1 T. water

Directions Mix until smooth. If chocolate hardens after a while and is too thick to drizzle, place it into a bag, pierce the bag with a toothpick and drizzle, rather than adding water to the chocolate. This will achieve a stiffer icing that doesn’t melt off the cookie.

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 375°. 2. Spread filberts onto a cookie sheet. Roast for 15 to 20 minutes, mixing occasionally to prevent burning. Remove from the oven and set aside. 3. Place sugar and water into a pot set over medium heat. Allow to cook without mixing until sugar turns amber in color, approximately 5 to 10 minutes. 4. Add nuts and whirl the pan so the nuts get evenly coated. Working quickly, spread nuts onto a parchment-lined baking sheet. Allow to cool. Break into pieces, and blend in a food processor for a few minutes until a smooth paste is formed.

Four-Layered Coffee Ice Cream Cake By: Miriam Paskes Photo credit: Imageination by Frimet Chana 845.558.6770

This dessert is a winner in taste, elegance and presentation. It’s fascinating to see what one can make when using even the most basic of ingredients. You will need to make each recipe twice, for a total of four layers. Read assembly instructions before starting.

80 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 18, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

Coffee Cake Prepare this cake twice and freeze.

Ingredients ¼ cup freshly squeezed orange juice

6 eggs, separated 1½ cups sugar

½ cup ground filberts

½ cup oil 1 T. coffee dissolved in 1 T. boiling water

¾ cup potato starch

Directions 1. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, and preheat your oven to 350°. 2. In the bowl of a mixer, on high speed, beat the egg whites and sugar until stiff. Gently fold in the yolks, oil, dissolved coffee, juice and filberts. Lastly, fold in the potato starch. 3. Pour into prepared cookie sheet. Bake for 38 minutes. Allow to cool, and then place in the freezer.

Coffee Ice Cream Note: This is delicious as an ice cream on its own, too. Make a double batch and freeze in a 9x13” pan.

Ingredients 6 eggs, separated

⅓ cup oil

⅔ cup sugar

1½ T. coffee dissolved in a bit of boiling water

Directions 1. In the bowl of a mixer, beat the egg whites and sugar on high speed until a very stiff snow forms. 2. Very gently fold in the yolks, oil and dissolved coffee.

Assembly 1. Prepare two cakes and freeze. 2. Make one ice cream recipe. 3. Remove one cake from the freezer, and pour one recipe of the coffee ice cream over it. Immediately place back into the freezer. 4. When the ice cream is completely firm, remove from the freezer. Take the second cake — along with the parchment paper — and holding on to the edges of the cake, flip it on top of the ice cream. Remove the parchment paper and place the assembled layers back into the freezer. 5. Make another recipe of the ice cream, and pour it over the first three layers. (If your ice cream isn’t stiff, create a border around the cake with two layers of silver foil so that it doesn’t run down the sides.) Freeze again. I like to store the assembled ice cream cake in a large Rubbermaid storage bin. Optional: When serving, top each slice with a few sliced almonds. Roast the almonds at 400° for about 7 minutes, stirring once in the middle.

It is a scene reminiscent of Cold War dystopian fears. Once-bustling American cities are on lockdown. Schools and shuls are closed indefinitely. Supermarket shelves have been emptied of bare essentials. Doctors and nurses are working overtime to save the ill. The world as we know it is on pause, and nobody can even venture a guess as to when it’ll all be over. As we go to print, these scenes are incrementally becoming more of a 2020 reality. The enemy? A microscopic piece of genetic material; a virus called SARS-CoV-2, causing a disease named COVID-19. The symptoms? Fever, coughing, sore throat, runny nose, body aches, and in more severe cases, difficulty breathing. The impact? We can’t even begin to fathom. It all began quietly — too quietly, perhaps — in the Wuhan region of China, when in the months of November and December a number of people exhibited flu-like symptoms, which were soon determined to be caused by a novel strain of coronavirus. Experts suggest that it might have stemmed from an unhygienic seafood and bird market, where the virus first made the jump from animals to humans. The virus turned out to be extremely contagious, and by the time Chinese officials publicly admitted to the existence of this new virus, countless individuals were infected, the city was placed on lockdown, and a ball of hurt was stealthily unleashed throughout the world. Chinese health officials quickly found themselves overwhelmed, unable to handle the huge number of patients requiring hospitalization. In an impressive ten-day span, they built

a 645,000-square-foot makeshift hospital that could service up to 1,000 patients! Some 7,500 laborers worked around the clock to put together an entire hospital made of prefabricated pieces,

which could be snapped together like pieces of a Lego set. The building of the hospital garnered so much attention that a livestream was set up so viewers around the world could follow the progress.

Wuhan is an economic hub, which sees millions of travelers from around the globe. With the virus yet to make headlines, individuals who contracted the disease ended up being personal couriers for this deadly virus. Iran was particularly hard hit when a merchant traveling from Wuhan to Qom (a city that sees many Muslim pilgrims to a local shrine) ended up turning the coun-

try into another global coronavirus epicenter. The virus infected many leading Iranian officials, including the vice president, members of parliament, and the deputy health minister who defiantly announced — while visibly weak, sweating and pale — that the country has “almost stabilized” the outbreak, before himself testing positive the very next day. As of this week Monday Iran has officially seen over 850 deaths, but some analysts suggest this number could be underreported. Satellite imagery has shown a massive number of graves being prepared at a cemetery in Qom, which suggests that Iran expects the death toll to rise significantly. Another country particularly hard hit is Italy. Many reasons have been suggested: an older population, more smokers, limited hospital resources and more. Early this week, the death toll reached nearly 2,000 out of 25,000 reported cases. After first ordering a lockdown of just one region, the Italian government has since put the entire country under a national lockdown, restricting citizens' movement and activities until April 3. The only retailers still open are pharmacies and supermarkets.

Corona Comes to the USA We live in times of hyperconnectivity, and it was a matter of when, not if, the COVID-19 would make its first appearance in the USA. In late January, a number of individuals who had traveled abroad returned home after having contracted the disease. The first large outbreak we were aware of was in a nursing home facility in the state of Washington. After dealing with what appeared to be a flu outbreak, dozens of staff and patients tested positive for coronavirus, and since mid-February, at least 20 deaths have been tied to this outbreak, with a large number of the facility's patients among the dead. With a virus this contagious, it wasn’t long before community-spread positive tests began popping up around the country. Community spread refers to virus transmission where the source is unknown and the patient hasn’t traveled or had any known contact with an infected individual. The first such case in the tri-state region was a Jewish attorney in New Rochelle, who tested positive and was hospitalized with respiratory complications. A couple of days later his son also tested positive, as did his wife, daughter, neighbor, friend, friend’s wife, and friend’s two sons and daughter, before positive tests came back for members of his congregation and a couple of other friends. This case was a perfect illustration of how this highly contagious disease spreads exponentially, and helps explain the drastic measures NYS officials took after this outbreak.

Jewish Life Affected In the busy days before Purim, Yidden in Eretz Yisroel and around the world began feeling the brunt of the virus spread. In addition to the troubles of those who tested positive and their families, increasingly restrictive measures were announced by the authorities, and life as we know it came screeching to a halt. At first, it was only the shuls and schools that housed anyone infected with the coronavirus that were closed down. But soon enough, governments announced measures to slow the spread of the virus, many of which will have a

Answering Coronavirus-Related Questions on the Minds of Many Is it possible that the media is exaggerating matters for sensationalism or political reasons? The media is always an easy target, but nearly all epidemiologists, health experts and government officials around the globe seem to agree on the gravity of the situation. Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, who is not one to easily succumb to media pressure, has been among the most forceful in his response.

Why can’t a vaccine be developed to immunize society? Even with an accelerated timeline, experts estimate that it will take over a year for a vaccine to be made widely available. Vaccines for one virus cannot immunize against another virus. The new vaccines will need to be rigorously tested to ensure that they are effective and don’t cause more harm than good.

Are all patients infected with the same type of coronavirus? Some studies have demonstrated that there are currently two types of coronaviruses spreading around the globe, with the more aggressive variety being more popular. More research still needs to be done as this can have an effect on vaccine development.

How long after contracting the coronavirus do symptoms appear? This can vary from two days on the short end to two weeks in other cases. On average, patients will start seeing symptoms at around day five and can expect the symptoms to get worse over a period of a few days.

Can you transmit the coronavirus before or after experiencing symptoms? It is possible to transmit the virus before symptoms appear; it appears that COVID-19 is different from other viruses where asymptomatic individuals rarely transmit the disease. While patients are experiencing symptoms, they are generally infectious, and

88 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

once recovery begins, they most likely cease to be contagious.

When will things return to normal? White House point man Dr. Anthony Fauci from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said Sunday that the outbreak will only get worse before it gets better. Because the USA has lagged far beyond other countries in its testing capabilities, it is fair to assume that the number of positive cases and casualties will spike significantly in the near future. Once the situation gets better, it will take a week or two until the improvement shows up in the data.

Is this virus more dangerous than the flu? At this point the exact death rate is hard to pin down, but it appears to be much more deadly than the flu, especially for the elderly. Additionally, because it is far more contagious and the symptoms take longer to appear, we risk overwhelming our health care system, which can lead to devastating consequences.

Is the coronavirus dangerous for young, healthy people? For the most part, the virus isn’t overly dangerous for those who are young and healthy, but there are exceptions. However, the greatest risk of healthy people contracting the virus is that it can easily be transmitted to the elderly or those with underlying health conditions. That is why everyone needs to take this very seriously.

What can individuals do to help stop the spread of the virus? We’ve all heard by now the importance of washing our hands and staying home if we feel ill. However, every one of us needs to practice social distancing to whatever extent possible. The more we go near others, the more likely we are to contract the disease and then further transmit it. If done right, social distancing will significantly slow or break the chain of transmission, and with Hashem’s help, turn the tide against this terrible affliction.

direct impact on our way of life. In Eretz Yisroel, where nearly 350 cases have been confirmed, but no deaths reported, baruch Hashem, Prime Minister Netanyahu first announced that all new arrivals will be required to self-quarantine for fourteen days. Within days, new far-reaching measures were announced, including the closing of all government-run schools, bans on gatherings of more than ten individuals, suspension of all leisure activities and more. Early this week, as the ten-person gathering maximum went into effect, footage circulated of weddings that took place outdoors where neighbors and friends sang along and participated from nearby porches. In Chareidi circles, communities have been following the directives of Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, who suggested that yeshivos and schools remain open. In order to comply with the government ruling, the classes and minyanim are kept strictly to only ten in size. In Antwerp, Belgium, the government has been forceful in its suspension of public community gatherings, and police even ordered a stop to the Shabbos morning davening at a number of shuls, including those of Pshevorsk and Satmar. Locally, the serious measures announced by the authorities are still trickling in as this article is being written. What was first a ban on gatherings of 500 people, has since been lowered to just 50 people and on Monday, the State of New Jersey announced a general curfew every night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. In addition, all schools have been ordered shut for a couple of weeks and it’s already becoming clear that life will not return to normal until at least after Pesach. While some children are surely enjoying this extended school break, it remains to be seen how this will affect preparations for what promises to be a Pesach season we will never forget.

Flattening the Curve At this point, experts agree that the virus can no longer be fully contained here, especially since the United States was way behind other countries when it came to mass testing. Since asymptomatic people can transmit the disease, even speeding up testing capacities significantly would not be enough to halt the spread. What is left to do then is what many are referring to as flattening the curve. The goal is to slow the spread of the virus so that we don’t have millions of people ill at once and overwhelm our hospital system, like what happened in Italy. The best way to understand this is by calculating the effects of exponential growth. Let’s assume that we go about our lives as normal and every sick individual makes just two new people sick over three days (a fair assumption). Now take a

calculator and start doubling the 4,000+ confirmed U.S. cases to 8,000, then 16,000, 32,000 and so on. It will only take a month or two until 100,000,000 Americans contract the virus! There is no way society can possibly manage such a catastrophe. The only thing left for experts to do is to try and flatten the curve, and see to it that we practice social distancing so that the virus doesn’t transmit so quickly and our health care system can handle the elderly and weak who need care. While we turn our eyes Heavenward and daven for the best, we can all help flatten the curve by listening to the advice of medical experts, stay home as much as possible and practice proper hygiene.

With COVID-19 causing us all to be on high alert, handwashing is being touted as one of the best defenses against the virus. But surprisingly, hand-washing wasn’t always encouraged‌ Step back in time and meet Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, the hero of hand-washing.

Vienna, 1846 Beyond the walls of the First Clinic, panic-laced whispers were being carried on the wind. Women are dying there, they said. New mothers are leaving behind their infants. It was as if the angel of death was silently roaming the maternity ward, searching for victims. And no one knew how to stop it. When Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis was appointed as an assistant to a professor in the maternity ward of the Vienna General Hospital, commonly referred to as the First Clinic, he was astounded by the monumental problem facing him: namely, the death of nearly 10% of new mothers under the clinic’s care, due to what was termed “childbed fever.” To further confound matters, the mortality rate was significantly lower but a short walk away, over in the Second Clinic, where patients were attended to by midwives instead of physicians-in-

training. Every time he thought of the difference in mortality rate, it drove him mad, making him wonder what caused women to succumb at such vastly disparate rates in the two wings of the same hospital. With determination, Dr. Semmelweis set out to discover the answer to this terrible mystery and put an end to needless death. He began by comparing everything in both wards: the temperature, the medical techniques in use, the issue of overcrowding… But one by one,

each potential cause became disqualified — until, finally, Dr. Semmelweis was able to hit upon the one apparent difference: the staff themselves. In the Second Clinic, midwives and midwifetrainees attended to women and infants as their sole occupation. But in the First Clinic, the physicians-in-training only showed up to tend to the new mothers after a daily shift in the “dead house” — what we would now refer to as the morgue — where they’d examine cadavers and discuss possible causes of death. Could it be, Dr. Semmelweis wondered, that some sort of cadaverous particles are being transferred to the maternal patients, and in some way, causing childbed fever? To test his theory, he instituted a policy that would require hand-washing with chlorinated lime between a stint in the morgue and the examination of patients. Astoundingly, the ma-

ternal death rate of 18.3% in April of 1847 was followed a month and a half later — after the hand-washing policies were put in motion in mid-May — with a mortality rate of but 2.2%. By July, the rate dropped even lower to a mere 1.2%. In the year that followed, two months achieved an absolute zero percent death rate — something completely unheard of at the time. To further encourage positive improvements in mortality rates, Semmelweis eventually required medical

instruments to be washed, as well, and despite the grumblings of the nurses, insisted that bed linens be changed between patients. While all of these requirements sound absurdly obvious to us living in the generation of Purell and disposable examination gloves, cleanliness at a microscopic level was not a consideration in those days. In fact, instead of the pomp and circumstance that should have heralded Semmelweis’ discovery, physicians of the day considered it an insult to be told that their hands were unclean, considering it an assault on their gentlemanliness. Sadly, Dr. Semmelweis was discredited and ridiculed, spending a tumultuous two decades fighting for the medical establishment to recognize his breakthrough. Ultimately, however, he spent the last days of his life in a straitjacket in an insane asylum, having been admitted by other physicians on the claim that he’d lost his mind. Because really now, who could imagine that something invisible to the naked eye could be the cause of death for so many people?* It would take a couple more decades before Louis Pasteur and the germ theory of disease would prove to the world that, yes, there truly are microscopic pathogens that swarm even on apparently clean surfaces, able to infect and bring death and destruction to the unsuspecting. Posthumuously, Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis has earned his place in history as the hero of hand-washing. As for us, let us be heroes in our own generation, exercising care and caution to prevent spread of the coronavirus and other harmful pathogens. Armed with a bar of soap and a kapitel Tehillim on our tongues, let us go forth and wage war on harmful microbes. *Note: To be fully truthful to history, it is said that Dr. Semmelweis did exhibit odd behavior toward the end of his years, which may have been psychological in nature. However, it is speculated that his admittance to an asylum was not solely based upon his behavior, which may not have been severe enough to warrant admittance.

The Department of Sanitation of New York is considered the largest sanitation department in the world, employing close to 10,000 workers and cleaning up an average of 11,000 tons of trash every day.

THE BORO PARK VIEW / 99

And yet, most New Yorkers are pretty much oblivious to the guys in their drab green uniforms who drive those massive white trucks all over the city. We just want them to toss our smelly, leaky, messy garbage into the backs of their cavernous trucks and take it far away. We really only pay attention to sanitation workers when they are blocking the street ahead of us, when they miss a pick-up because of a blizzard, or when we get ticketed for failing to properly fold our cardboard boxes. That’s when we’re quick to call our local city councilmember to complain. But the truth is that the DSNY does a remarkable job collecting our waste and cleaning up our city. They are so efficient, in fact, that we barely notice them. Most of us have no clue how they operate, where they put our garbage, and whether our efforts at recycling and composting are actually making a difference.

White Wings In the years before sanitation became a thing, the city of New York was not a pretty sight. Back in the 1800s, the police department was officially responsible for cleaning the streets, but it wasn’t really happening. Frankly, the streets of the city smelled awful. According to Robin Nagle, who wrote a book about the DSNY called Picking Up, trash was pretty much everywhere. “Put yourself back in the late nineteenth century,” says Nagle, “and think about the material world that would have surrounded your home. When you threw something out, it wouldn’t go anywhere. It would be thrown in the street.” As a result, the city streets were strewn with “street gunk,” food waste, old furniture, and even dead animals. Yes, dead animals. Don’t forget that this was back in the days of horses and buggies. Piles of debris were all over the place. It wasn’t so bad in the city’s upscale neighborhoods, where residents would occasionally hire private companies to clean up the streets, but in the poorer neighborhoods, it was a disaster — not to mention a health hazard. Finally, in 1881, the city created the Department of Street Cleaning (which was renamed the Department of Sanitation in 1929). Things began to improve significantly after then-Mayor William Strong hired a fellow named George Waring to head the Department in 1895. Waring handled the job as if he headed a major corporation, delegating responsibility to his workers in clearly defined areas. He went about his

The DSNY by the Numbers

business aggressively, determined to clean out even the poorest, filthiest sections of the city. In historic photos, Waring’s sanitation crews can be seen wearing helmets and white suits, a “uniform” that gave them an aura of authority, cleanliness and professionalism. They were fondly nicknamed the “White Wings” by grateful New Yorkers of that era. “These men became heroes,” said Nagle, “because for the first time in anyone’s memory they actually cleaned the city.”

What started as a new initiative back in the 1890s is today the largest sanitation department in the world, a massive and powerful city agency that collects more than 10,500 tons of residential and institutional garbage and 1,760 tons of recyclables every day. Aside from collecting, moving and discarding all that trash, the DSNY is also responsible for street cleaning and snow removal on the 6,300 miles of city streets. There are currently 7,201 uniformed sanitation workers and 2,041 civilian workers employed by the DSNY. Their fleet of vehicles includes 2,230 general trucks and 275 specialized trucks, 450 street sweepers, 365 snowplows, and 2,360 support vehicles. It’s a sanitation army. Just as police officers are called “New York’s Finest” and firefighters “New York’s Bravest,” the men and women of the DSNY are dubbed “New York’s Strongest.” While many cities use automated systems to collect their trash, in New York it’s the sanitation guys who do the heavy lifting. Sanitation department rules stipulate that no bag of garbage should exceed fifty pounds in weight. But when was the last time you saw your local sanitation guys pull out a scale? City residents who grumble about missed garbage pickups and other random inconveniences should be aware that New York is one of the few large cities where trash collection is paid for entirely out of our taxes. This means there’s no extra charge to the customers. In contrast, cities like San Antonio and Los Angeles charge a monthly or annual fee of its residents. Other cities, including San Francisco and Seattle, charge fees based on how much garbage you put out, apparently to create a financial incentive to generate less trash. In those areas, you choose the size of your garbage bin and pay accordingly. So, all in all, New Yorkers are getting a good deal.

Where Does Our Garbage Go? Sanitation services consist of two stages — collection and disposal. We are all very well aware of the collection part; we’ve watched it plenty of times. But does anybody know what happens to our trash after it’s been collected? Does anybody even care?

Of the 3.8 million tons of garbage that the DSNY collects annually, about 14% is recycled, 76% is sent to landfills, and 10% is burned at waste-to-energy facilities, which use garbage as fuel to generate electricity. So a huge portion of our garbage is transported to landfills, but it’s not as simple as you think. Those landfills are nowhere near the city. In fact, most of our garbage travels quite far, to landfills that are located in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and South Carolina. It wasn’t always so. Does anybody remember the infamous Fresh Kills landfill? For almost 50 years, most of New York City’s garbage — 10 million tons annually — was delivered to Fresh Kills in Staten Island and unceremoniously dumped there. Eventually, it created huge mountains of trash that towered over the neighboring communities and attracted hundreds of hungry birds. This was fine with most New Yorkers, but it didn’t quite sit well with Staten Islanders who complained bitterly about the awful smell. Finally, the neighbors put up such a fuss that the Fresh Kills landfill, which had opened in 1948, was officially closed down by Mayor Rudy Guiliani and Governor George Pataki in 1996. By the year 2000, all five New York boroughs were forced to find landfill sites in other states. In 2001, Fresh Kills was temporarily reopened as the dumping ground for debris generated at the World Trade

What’s It Like To Be a Sanitation Worker? If you’re considering working for the DSNY, there are a few things you need to consider first. Yes, the pay is pretty good and the benefits are generous. But you need to show up at the crack of dawn, do some serious heavy lifting, and dodge traffic that dangerously weaves around you. Studies show that working for the DSNY is actually more dangerous than working for the NYPD or the FDNY. Still interested? Then you’ll need to be at least 21 years old, have a high school diploma, a commercial driver’s license, and knowledge of proper lifting techniques. You’ll also need to pass a written and physical exam. What’s a typical day like for a sanitation worker? It actually starts in the middle of the night. Many sanitation workers wake up at 3:30 a.m. so they can be on site before 6:00 a.m. They generally meet at a DSNY garage, where roll call is taken and routes are assigned for the day. The agency divides the city into 59 districts or zones for garbage collection and runs 7,400 truck routes throughout the boroughs every week. The workday ends when the route is successfully finished, usually at about 2:00 p.m. Most sanitation workers wear green uniforms and heavy boots. They usually begin their routes before sunrise and literally watch as the city wakes up. The job is physically taxing, so they need to be in good physical shape. Many of them exercise regularly and work as bodybuilders. Entry-level salary for sanitation employees is $37,600, but that increases regularly so that sanitation workers are paid an average of $77,300 after five years. Sanitation workers get generous health insurance benefits and are eligible for pension after 20 to 22 years of service. There are significant hazards to the job, however. Rats are common in NYC trash, especially in neighborhoods with lots of eateries. Dodging impatient drivers and racing bikers is a serious safety issue. Sanitation workers also need to stand clear of the hopper, the massive metal piece on the back of the truck that gobbles up the garbage. When the hopper crushes the trash, it can cause dangerous chemicals or broken glass to spray outward. No wonder sanitation is considered the fifth most dangerous job in America.

The Treasures in the Trash Museum Your great aunt’s ceramic vase collection? The neighbor’s old light fixtures? That Mickey Mouse souvenir you threw away years ago? All of these actually may have been resurrected and may be living a new life in the Treasures in the Trash Museum. Is there really a Trash Museum in New York City? Well, yes and no. Yes, because a sanitation worker named Nelson Molina has gathered an astonishing collection of stuff that people threw away, and he displays it proudly on the second floor of a sanitation garage in Manhattan. No, because the “museum” is not open to the public. For 34 years, Molina has been stashing away a huge collection of memorabilia, household items, books, toys and countless treasures of trash. There are currently over 45,000 items in his collection, stored according to size, theme and color. Molina says he actually has been hoarding garbage since very early on. “I would pick things out of the garbage when I was a kid,” he says. He began his “treasures” collection as a sanitation worker in 1981 and started displaying his collection on shelves in the M11 garage. Over time, the collection grew as Molina added more and more display shelves. Coworkers say he has an uncanny ability to recognize salvageable items in big black garbage bags full of junk. Molina retired from the DSNY in 2015, but he still visits the collection three times a week. Because the “museum” is housed in an active garage, it isn’t currently open to the general public, but sanitation workers can visit anytime. Molina dreams of one day having the collection transported to a different location, where it can be viewed by anyone. The collection offers a fascinating commentary on our culture and way of life. Old-timers will recognize dated record albums, seltzer bottles and rotary phones. Younger people will be interested in an array of computer games, familiar figures and electric guitars. There’s something in the collection to interest anybody. Molina says that being a sanitation worker “is one of the greatest jobs in the world,” and in fact, his son followed in his footsteps and works for the DSNY as well. He is super proud of his collection, which he says is living proof that “before you throw something out, think about it. Everything can have a home.”

Center on 9/11. But all that is history. Nowadays, a huge volume of NYC trash is transported to out-of-state landfills, usually by truck. Yet despite the considerable distance all that garbage is transported, the DSNY’s cost of disposal is less than half what it pays for collection. In dollars and cents, the agency spends about $307 per ton for collection and $126 for disposal. This is attributed to the fact that the city actually gets paid a small fee for its recyclable materials. And what happened to Fresh Kills? It’s being recycled as well, into a 2,200-acre public park three times the size of Central Park. Plans are underway to create picturesque walking trails, picnic grounds, many acres of hilly grasslands, a bird sanctuary, and a thriving ecosystem that will house hundreds of species of plants and animals. The park is slated to fully open in 2036.

The Future of Sanitation As the world worries about climate change and massive efforts are made to “go green,” the DSNY is joining the revolution. Its recycling program, which began on a voluntary basis back in 1986, officially went into effect in 1989. New Yorkers currently recycle about 17% of

Fun Facts About Sanitation • Americans throw out 15% to 25% of the food they purchase. • There are currently 268 females working in the DSNY, including its current Commissioner Kathryn Garcia. • May is the busiest month for sanitation, probably because that’s when people do their spring cleaning. • The Spring Street Salt Shed is a 70-foot-high modern building off the West Side Highway that houses 5,000 tons of salt, ready for the next snowstorm. • While the DSNY picks up garbage for private residences, schools and nonprofits, businesses and restaurants need to hire private sanitation companies to collect their trash.

their waste. That’s nice, but we could be doing better. With no actual enforcement of recycling laws, many of us don’t take it as seriously as we should. The recently instituted composting program also isn’t making much of a difference. In 2017, the program only picked up 43,000 tons of food scrap, which is estimated to be about 5% of what should have been composted. Most New Yorkers are reluctant to deal with the program because, as one Brooklyn resident put it, “Honestly, it’s somewhat gross.” Mayor Bill de Blasio introduced a Zero Waste initiative in 2015, hoping to drastically cut the city’s garbage production by the year 2030. But the current Commissioner of Sanitation, Kathryn Garcia, admits that it’s probably not going to happen. New Yorkers are creatures of habit, and most of us are set in our ways. So it will take an aggressive advertising and education campaign to force us to become more careful about what we throw out on a regular basis. In the meantime, says Robin Nagle, let’s at least appreciate the men and women of the DSNY for their services. Nagle strongly believes that the DSNY is “the most important uniformed force on the street, because New York City couldn’t be what we are if sanitation wasn’t out there every day doing the job pretty well.” In a recent interview, Nagle urged New Yorkers to just say thank you. “When I started doing that on my own several years ago,” said Nagle, “I was amazed at the reaction. The guys were astonished that anybody was bothering to say thank you. It’s one small gesture that an individual can make that honors them in a small but real way.”

Just as police officers are called “New York’s Finest” and firefighters “New York’s Bravest,” the men and women of the DSNY are dubbed “New York’s Strongest.”

It’s almost Pesach! What comes to mind for most of us is getting the house cleaned, the cooking and baking done, and coming up with ideas on how to set our Seder table to be fit for a king! While the cleaning and cooking must get done — let’s be real, otherwise there is no Pesach — take a few minutes out of your busy schedule to think about the Seder decor. Because while good food makes an oneg yom tov, good food plus a beautiful table — now that’s a yom tov of royalty! Whether you’re making this beautiful pillowcase for the head of the Seder or for other participants, it’s sure to make a statement of honor. Stay tuned for more Pesach DIY ideas to match this look!

YOU WILL NEED: • A yard of fabric • Pillow (or stuffing) • Pencil • Scissors •  Alef-beis tracers or printouts • Puff paint or any fabric paint • Small paint brush • Beads • Needle and thread

BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

For the fabric Choose a fabric that will match the rest of the table setting. Think of the dishes you will be using, the coloring of the room, the tablecloth, etc. Make sure that the threads of the fabric aren’t too thick, so that the fabric won’t unravel when the fringes are cut. Also make sure the fabric is not too flimsy, because such fringes will fall flat and won’t look as pretty.

For the aleph-beis You can either buy a package of tracers, or print out the letters you need, cut them out, and trace. The font size used in the sample is 700.

For the paint and beads The puff paint and beads should match the fabric you chose. A good idea is to take the fabric along to the craft store so you can choose accordingly.

LET’S GET STARTED!

The base 1.

Fold the fabric in half, and spread it out on your work surface. If the fabric has an edging that you don’t want, cut it off.

2.

Place the pillow about 4 inches off the corner.

3.

Cut the fabric around the pillow, leaving 4 inches of extra fabric on all four sides.

4.

Iron the fabric if there are undesired creases.

5.

Mark the four corners of your pillow with a pencil.

6.

Using the pencil mark as your guide, cut out squares on all four corners. Make sure you are cutting both layers of fabric. This is for the front and the back of the pillow case.

7.

Cut fringes on all four sides. The fringes should be approximately the width of three-quarters of an inch each. Use the empty square ends as your guide to know how long the slits should be. Again, be sure that you’re cutting both layers of fabric.

8.

Get rid of unwanted threads by softy pulling on them, or by cutting them off.

Get painting!

4.

Working with one letter at a time, draw a thin outline with the puff paint.

1.

Cut out the letters (if you are using printouts).

5.

2.

Start by placing the ‫ ס‬first. Since it’s the middle letter, make sure it’s in the center of the fabric. Then place the ‫ ח‬and ‫ פ‬on the two sides.

Squirt some paint inside the letter. Using a paint brush, fill in the letter completely. Be careful when touching the outline.

6.

For the next two letters, you may want to turn the fabric sideways. This way the painted ‫ פ‬is not in the way, and you don’t need to worry about smudging it with your arm.

3.

Trace the outline with a pencil.

Glam time! 1.

Once the paint is dry, play around with your pearls or beads. Place them at random on your fabric, until you get your desired look.

2.

Thread a needle. Carefully sew the beads onto the fabric. Start from the bottom upward so the rest of the beads don’t roll off as you sew.

3.

Don’t forget to knot the thread on the back of the fabric after sewing each bead.

4.

For the clusters, thread all the beads together. Sew down the other end, forming a circle. To secure all beads in place, sew tight loops over the thread between the beads.

4.

Tie random fringes around the perimeter to make sure the pillowcase stays neatly centered on the pillow.

5.

Tie the remaining fringes with doubleknots. And your masterpiece is ready for the Seder!

Make it a case! 1.

Place the pillow in between the two pieces of fabric.

2.

Start by tying two end fringes in a double knot.

3.

Work along all four corners of the pillow, pulling the fabric tightly over it. Doubleknot the fringes.

Harav Eliezer Eichler, zt”l, Boyaner Rav of Boro Park By: Rafael Hoffman

Harav Eliezer Eichler, zt”l, who served as Rav of the Boyan kehillah in America and one of the elder rabbanim of Boro Park was niftar Sunday morning. He was 85 years old. The picture of a Chassidishe talmid chacham steeped in the ideals of generations of tzaddikim of years gone by, Rav Eichler was one of the klal’s most respected and beloved rabbanim. A marbitz Torah par excellence for over a half century, many of his talmidim have themselves gone on to become leaders of Klal Yisroel. In the more than 30 years that he served as Rav of the Boyaner kehillah, he won the hearts and deep respect of the community’s members with his refined middos, his deep dedication to limud haTorah, and his sincere caring for the many Yidden who sought his wise counsel. Rav Eliezer Ben Zion Eichler was born in Yerushalayim in 1935 to Harav Moshe Pinchas Ezriel, z”l, and Rebbetzin Sarah Michla, a”h. The family were descendants of Harav Meir Eichler, z”l, a chassid of

the Kedushas Yom Tov, Harav Yom Tov Lipa Teitelbaum of Sighet, zy”a, who had immigrated to Eretz Yisrael. Young Eliezer grew up amid the kedushah and purity of the old generation of Yerushalmi Jews. He spent his early years learning in the famed “Masmidim” yeshivah – a beis medrash formed to preserve the spirit of Torah and yiras Shamayim amidst the upheaval that assailed Yerushalayim in the years surrounding the establishment of the State of Israel. From a young age, Reb Eliezer’s great hasmadah, sharp mind, and tremendous ahavas haTorah were recognized by his rebbeim as he gradually emerged as a budding talmid chacham. He would go on to study in the yeshivah led by the Tchibiner Rav, Harav Dov Berish Weidenfeld, zt”l. Rav Eichler became one of the most

dedicated talmidim of the Tchebiner Rav, absorbing his deep, probing approach to limud haTorah. The respect was mutual, and when Rav Eichler was only 24 years old, his Rebbe asked him to serve as a baal tefillah in the yeshivah for the Yamim Nora’im. Uncomfortable with the offer, especially in light of his youth, Rav Eichler tried to demur, but his Rebbe insisted, saying that he would personally take responsibility for his performing the hallowed task at such a young age. For the rest of his life, Rav Eichler spoke with great reverence about the Tchibiner Rav remaining tightly bound to his Torah and tzidkus. Rav Eichler married Chaya Cheshin, the daughter of Harav Zev Cheshin, zt”l, a noted Yerushalmi mekubal. The couple built a home filled with Torah and kedushah. Throughout his life, Rebbetzin Eichler tended to her husband’s every physical need, allowing him to dedicate himself to his own aliyah in Torah as well as to the needs of his talmidim. While still in his 20s, Rav Eichler was chosen by Rav Yehoshua Brim, zt”l, to serve as a maggid shiur in Yeshivas Rizhin in Yerushalayim, the mosod of Boyaner chassidus. There he became a Rebbe to generations of talmidim, teaching them to plumb the depths of sugyos haShas with his probing lomdishe approach. His gadlus in Torah was matched by his tremendous dedication to his talmidim, making him an especially beloved Rebbe. Several years after the founding of Kiryas Tosh outside of Montreal in the 1960s, the Tosher Rebbe, Harav Meshulem Feish Lowy, zy”a, invited Rav Eichler to serve in the yeshivah he had founded in the town. There he continued his harbatzos

haTorah with his signature dedication. The power of his presence in the yeshivah was such that, on one occasion after completing a shidduch for one of his sons with a kallah in Eretz Yisrael, the Tosher Rebbe asked Rav Eichler not to travel overseas to attend the vort, fearing that his absence would disrupt the zman for his talmidim to too great a degree. In 1988, as the Boyaner kehillah in America began to grow, the Boyaner Rebbe, shlit”a, asked Rav Eichler to move to Boro Park to assume leadership of the community there. Despite having been the Rebbe’s own maggid shiur in his younger years, Rav Eichler always conducted himself with his signature humility and subservience toward him, consulting with the Rebbe for guidance on important matters relating to the community. Rav Eichler’s harbotzas haTorah expanded to the baalei batim of Boyan, to whom he regularly delivered many shiurim. At the same time, he continued serving as a maggid shiur in the kehillah’s mosod, Yeshivah Tiferes Mordechai Shlomo. In the decades during which he served as the kehillah’s Rav, he won the respect and love of Boyan’s chassidim, making himself easily available for shailos, advice, or a word of encouragement; exercising a unique ability to calm others in distress. In beis midrash he inspired mispallelim with his heartfelt tefillos, often serving as a baal tefillah on yomim tovim and special occasions. Those who were privileged to hear

his tefillos recalled that one could sense Rav Eichler’s sincere bittul to his Creator. His erudite drashos, often focused on strengthening limud haTorah and k’vod Shamayaim, were well liked and attended by members of the kehillah and beyond. In addition to his mastery of Shas and poskim, Rav Eichler was a treasure chest of sifrei drash and chassidus. When sitting together either at a Friday night “zitz” or at a kiddush, Yidden young and old would sit around him to hear his divrei Torah. Perhaps more than anything else, Rav Eichler’s own hasmadah and dedication to Torah served as a model of inspiration for the kehillah. Those who passed by or came to his home, even late at night, nearly always remember finding him perched over a sefer fully absorbed in limud haTorah. He once commented that “Chassidus is like butter, but the Torah is our bread.” Rav Eichler had been ill and hospitalized for over a month. He was niftar early Sunday morning. The levayah was held later that afternoon, first at the Boyaner Beis Midrash in Boro Park and later at Boyan’s yeshivah. The aron was then flown to Eretz Yisroel for burial on Har Hamenuchos. Rav Eichler is survived by, ybl”c, his wife, Rebbetzin Chaya; sons Harav Eliyahu, Harav Moshe Pinchas, Harav Berish and Harav Tzvi Aryeh; daughters Mrs. Golda Honig, Mrs. Rivka Sekula and Mrs. Miriam Brand; as well as by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Applying Ourselves to Our Appliances Here’s an uncomfortable truth: Some tasks are more exciting than others. It’s the nature of the beast. But there’s an upside to it: It gives us the opportunity to creatively find ways to make these less-than-delightful tasks more enjoyable. So, let’s! As we tackle our appliances, let’s take the opportunity to fill our hearts with gratitude for all these wonderful tools available to us. They say that happiness is the key to success — but it’s gratitude that is the key to happiness. Be grateful and your world (and work) will be more beautiful! I’ll also recommend some upbeat music while you work, comfortable shoes and a smile. They’ll put a bounce in your step and a song in your heart.

Motzei Shabbos

Depending on your home layout and family dynamics, you might be ready for the dining room table, chairs, sofas and recliners, either tonight, or the coming Motzei Shabbos. Technology has been good to us, and there are a plethora of tools available, from the vacuum cleaner to the steam machine, to make this task easy and effective. March 21

Dining Exteriors

The dining room/living room exteriors are the official task of the day. This is also the time to focus on the room’s walls — if you haven’t yet. The halachic requirement is only for the areas within kids’ reach, but I suspect you’d like to give the room where your Seder will be led a fresh, clean feel l’kavod yom tov. Especially when the Miracle mop makes wall-washing so very easy!

Monday March 23

Small Appliances

From Bosch machines to toaster ovens, our smaller appliances tend to be employed for actual chometz use. As such, we naturally want to give it a proper cleaning. But prior to breaking the machine apart in an attempt to get to dirt you can’t reach (or possibly even see) you might want to ask a shailah about how far it is necessary to go. Keep in mind that you’ll probably be “selling” these appliances, making efforts to eradicate tiny crumbs not only futile but probably entirely unnecessary. For those areas easily reachable, you can use a steam machine or even a toothbrush, but don’t expect perfection, as that is entirely unrealistic. Your general responsibility here is to wipe over the entire appliance (the Magic Eraser is especially useful for hard-to-remove food stains), but don’t allow this to be more difficult than it needs to be.

Tuesday

Wednesday

March 24

March 25

Oven If your oven is self-cleaning, then today, when the kids are out of the house, is the time to open the windows and let the magic happen. If, however, your appliance has that annoying tendency not to clean up after itself, then tonight, when the little ones are in bed, open the kitchen windows, put on rubber gloves, and spray it up. Most oven cleaners are toxic, and I know you know that — but your kids might not. So while I recommend leaving it overnight to work its magic, do make certain to wipe all outside surfaces, and make sure the kids don’t have access to the area until it’s entirely cleaned. Also, remember to dispose of the chemical cleaners once the task is done. No amount of money is worth the potential risk.

Dishwasher, Second Freezer or Oven Some are luckier in the appliance department than others. Having more room for your appliances certainly makes your life easier year-round — but it also gives you a bit more work this time of year. (But when counting your blessings, remember to include these, too!)

Bite-Size

PESACH CLEANING

Thursday

We’re keeping the fridge for last, but do be wise and do this task before your weekly grocery order. It is always easier to work with less items around. To save energy, unplug your unit prior to cleaning. Remove all contents and dispose of anything not needed. Wipe down items you wish to keep. Remove shelves and wash thoroughly. Pay special attention to the underside of shelves and drawers, the refrigerator “ceiling,” back wall, and the gasket — which tends to accumulate crumbs. Avoid using bleach on the gasket, as it can dry out the vinyl, causing cracks. To clean the grate underneath or behind the refrigerator (as per fridge repairmen, this is an important aspect of refrigerator upkeep!), try a super-long scrub brush. And if space permits it (this is true of all of your free-standing appliances), it would be wise to move it aside to vacuum and wash underneath.

OF THE EIGHT-WEEK COUNTDOWN

Fridge and Freezer

March 26

Friday

WEEK 2

Bonus tips: • Maximize your refrigerator’s efficiency (and keep your food fresh!) by ensuring your fridge is well sealed. Place a lit flashlight inside the fridge and close all lights in the room (nighttime works best), and you will be able to see if and where light escapes. To tighten the insulation seam, blow direct heat from a blow dryer and reshape the rubber sealing. • Refrigerator liners, typically used for Pesach, weren’t invented only for this season. As long as the fridge shelves are solid (and not built for air circulation), the liners work well for year-round use. Use one now! You can still store this week’s non-Pesach Shabbos food on lined shelves. Do keep real chometz out of the fridge (unless it’s double-wrapped or well sealed), but doing your work early doesn’t preclude eating home on Shabbos Hagadol.

Kitchen Odds and Ends

Start smart: Write a list of all the odds and ends you still want to complete today. Assign an approximate time frame to each group of tasks, and you’ll be surprised to discover how few minutes are required for each one. Timers keep you focused, they get you working faster, and ultimately, make you feel like the winner you are! Some odds and ends you may want to clean today are the light fixtures, hot water urn, Keurig machine, microwave, etc. While the microwave is assigned for today, many still prefer to leave their unit available for some last-minute chometz. Considering this is the convenience the microwave was created for, plus the fact that cleaning it is a minimal task, it is not a bad idea. Which is why I will once again remind you that you’re all capable of judiciously reviewing your calendar and allocating your not-yet-done tasks for the right days. For quick and thorough microwave cleaning, try this: Fill a microwave-safe bowl with ½ cup water and ½ cup vinegar, and nuke for a full seven minutes. Keep the doors closed to allow the steam to loosen any stuck-on dirt. After the water has cooled down (5 to 10 minutes), you should be able to easily wipe the inside clean with a paper towel or microfiber cloth. On the exterior of the microwave, the Magic Eraser truly works like magic!

Motzei Shabbos March 28

If you’re not eating home on Shabbos Hagadol, now’s the time to get to the stovetop, table and chairs. Completing your work ahead of time allows you to kasher or open the Pesach kitchen and start your cooking earlier in the week.

The purpose of art is to express an idea that will make us think — and potentially see things in a different light. In recent years, a number of artists have diverged from traditional art forms to employ unusual items in their creations. Whether their intentions are to make us consider our excess, our careless waste, or the fragility of life, their art is often as inspiring and thought-provoking as they are creative.

ANN SMITH

HA SCHULT

This German artist created hundreds of human-sized trash figures — and they’ve all traversed the globe over the past 23 years. They’ve visited places like a park in Tel Aviv, the Great Wall in China, a city center in Rome, the waterfront in Brooklyn and the pyramids in Giza. Each sculpture is made of aluminum cans, plastic bottles, computer parts and more.

Using discarded computer parts, this artist forms delicate creations in whose construction each part seems to fit perfectly. The intended message is about adapting and seeing how useful — and beautiful — every item around us can be.

ROBERT BRADFORD

Utilizing discarded childhood toys and game pieces, this artist creates charming sculptures that are intended to evoke nostalgia and make the viewer smile.

By: Tziri Hershkovitz

PABLO PICASSO

Picasso was most famous for his painted art, though he did create sculptures, as well. In 1940, years ahead of the “trash art” movement, he created the whimsical Bull’s Head from a bicycle seat and handlebars. Although the piece wasn’t appreciated by critics at the time, it is now proudly displayed at the Musee National Picasso-Paris, where its simplicity and subtle humor is enjoyed.

NOAH DELEDDA

There is beauty in the most mundane and cheapest pieces of trash, or so claims the talented artist who scrubs away the outer layer of cans, brings it to a beautiful shine, and then proceeds to transform it with stunningly delicate designs.

ATELIER HAPAX

Got clutter lying around, which you want to hold on to for some inexplicable reason? This French artist will take your trash and transform it into something meaningful and beautiful — like a chess set created from cardboard pellets.

TYREE GUYTON

PALM SPRINGS MUSEUM

In Palm Springs Art Museum, art lovers were disappointed to find a pile of full Hefty trash bags as one of the showcased features. The message was supposed to make them think of all the waste we humans create on the planet, but most visitors felt that it was their time and money that was wasted.

When this retired-firefighter-turned-artist realized that dilapidated homes nearby were drawing the wrong element to his hometown of Detroit, Michigan, he went about transforming the houses with trash he found lying around — and some buckets of colored paint. Dubbing his project “the Heidelberg Project” (after Heidelberg Street, where he’d grown up), Guyton proceeded to enhance houses, vacant lots and even entire streets.

Upcycling is a step above recycling, where people transform, rather than reuse, material that would otherwise end up in the landfills. This artist employs highway flotsam (most notably hubcaps) to create his captivating sculptures.

In December 2019, a banana installation made the news. The artist used a simple banana and duct tape to make a point — though most were left scratching their heads, unsure of what that point precisely was. The art then made even greater news, because despite the $120K price tag (!), there was a daring art lover who… actually ate the banana! The artist insisted that his art wasn’t destroyed and that a new banana could be placed in its slot. After all, he reasoned, it wasn’t as if the banana was going to stay fresh forever. Some argue that the stunt upped the value. It certainly increased the piece’s popularity.

Ultimately, the value of art is determined by you, the consumer. If you find a piece thought-provoking, or even just entertaining, then it has served its purpose. If, on the other hand, you find the “art” foolish and a waste of space… well, then, it technically is still trash — albeit in another form.

Keep in mind that although one letter is different in each word, the positions of the letters do not change.
