Customer Picks The stuff you love for Pesach! Pesach cakes contain very little starch and rely on the right pan for perfect results. A traditional tube pan with little feet allows you to cool the cake upside down so you get beautiful, tall cakes every time. Lots of vegetables need slicing throughout Pesach. For a faster way to do it, go with a Zyliss Mandoline Slicer. It gives you options for different thicknesses and comes with a safety holder to help avoid mishaps.
Plastic counters can be annoying on Pesach. Hot Spot Silicone Trivets to the rescue! Keep a few on your counter to stop all the pots coming off the stove from melting your disposable countertops.
Eiyer kichel has become a popular addition to Pesach snacks. It’s tasty and contains much less sugar than other baked goods. Using a Silicone Baking Mat and Offset Metal Spatula helps make this baking project quick and easy.
Many have the tradition to peel all fruits and vegetables used over Pesach. Having the right peelers make this job easy. Oxo to the rescue with a set of 3 peelers—regular, serrated for soft skin and julienne for shredding and stir fries—great for Pesach side dishes.
No more schlepping roasts back to the butcher shop for slicing! The Wusthof Super Slicer has become our best-selling knife. Scalloped blade slices meat neatly and easily—even when hot.

THE GOLD STANDARD (Re: The Hand-Washing Hero, Issue 27) I read with interest your informative article on Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis and his discovery that washing hands saves lives. There are two additional points that I would like to add: 1. There is a debate as to whether Dr. Semmelweis was Jewish. Being both Jewish and Hungarian may have contributed to the rejection of his ideas by the Austrian medical establishment of the time. 2. The picture that accompanies the article is of a physician using hand sanitizer — a popular current version of hand-washing. I want to inform all The Boro Park View readers that hand-washing, with warm soap and water, still remains the gold standard for effectively disinfecting your hands. Hand-washing is more effective than sanitizers, as it actually disables viruses by dissolving the core that holds the coronavirus together. Hand sanitizers are a good substitute if hand-washing is unavailable, and claims to “kill 99% of germs” are most effective against bacteria. Wishing all The Boro Park View readers a safe and healthy Pesach. Harry G. Baldinger, D.P.M.

INBOX fill. As we grapple with the newfound reality, we seek solace in the tales of extraordinary greatness. Of his gentle and kind approach. Of his love and concern for all. And above all, of our grandfather’s extreme meticulousness in halacha and Torah. We were gratified to read a brief synopsis of his life, and I feel compelled to respond to one anecdote in the article, in which the details of the story were inaccurate. You wrote that when our uncle Berish was engaged, the Tosher Rebbe, zt”l, asked Rav Eichler, the rosh yeshiva, to refrain from traveling to Eretz Yisroel so as not to disrupt the flow of the new zman in yeshivah. And our zeide didn’t go to his own child’s simcha. A simcha that was being celebrated abroad, in Eretz Yisroel, his birthplace. That itself is remarkable. However, the story’s start is different. When his son was engaged, our grandfather went into the Rebbe on his own, without being prompted, and suggested that perhaps he shouldn’t attend the tenoyim, as it was shortly after Pesach and he didn’t want to disrupt the flow of the new zman. The Rebbe didn’t request of him to miss his child’s simcha — our zeide himself chose to skip the affair so that the bachurim’s learning would continue uninterrupted. Please print the correct version of the story. May his noble deeds and his fatherly concern for all be a meilitz yosher for all of us. C. Unsdorfer, in the name of the Eichler Family

YOUR VOICE A LETTER TO THE PUBLIC In these days of anxiety and anticipation, as Klal Yisroel prepares to greet Moshiach, I had some thoughts I wanted to share with you. At first I hesitated. Who am I to speak hashkafah and give suggestions to the olam? But then I thought: If I have an idea of value that even one person may benefit from, why should I deprive him of it? In these challenging times of the coronavirus crisis,
24 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 25, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
apart from working on thanking Hashem b’simcha for the difficulty itself, as Chazal require us to do, there are two other things I felt it would be worthwhile to give our attention to. The first thing is to try to find the silver lining in the challenge. One silver lining I’ve seen is its effect in revitalizing our bitachon. At Mesila, bitachon is the first on the list of efforts for parnassah and is the only one that guarantees success. When everything is going well, it’s hard to discern if one is a real botei’ach. In times of plenty, it is difficult — though not impossible — to genuinely realize that everything is from the Ribbono Shel Olam and that we are totally in His hands. But when things aren’t running so smoothly — when we are faced with health issues, financial issues and all the other challenges that the current crisis presents, that is when our bitachon is put to the test and emerges in its true colors. Do I feel menuchas hanefesh? Am I totally reliant on Hakadosh Baruch Hu? The crisis enables us to draw on everything we’ve been learning and preaching all along. Also, when things get tough, we automatically feel closer to Hashem. In a way, it is easier now than ever before to remember that, even if we’ve been laid off, our true Boss remains the same and He will always provide for us. The second thought I had was a proposal to turn the challenge into an opportunity. It occurred to me that the situation affords us, together with our wives and children, the golden opportunity to take a fresh look at our lives and at the comforts we’ve gotten used to. In the last half-century, the culture that we live in has accustomed us to a growing dependency on ever-growing comforts and technological conveniences. During this time that we’re home together with our families, let’s take the step of dropping one comfort, and then an additional comfort each week — b’simcha. Obviously, someone who’s had a drastic cut in his income doesn’t need to be told to do this; he has no choice. But for those who don’t have to, I’m suggesting to grasp the opportunity, get the entire family on board, and make a conscious decision to cut out one comfort of your own accord, happily and creatively. It can be done with very little pain, and once it becomes a habit, it will be barely felt at all, yet the benefits will be inestimable. We’ll learn to identify with all the people who are in financial straits, to focus on what’s really important in life, and to redefine our priorities. And the greatest benefit of all will be for the long term, because lowering material standards is good for all of us. Now, as we are about to begin reading Vayikra and the parshiyos hakorbanos, consider this conscious “sacrifice” as a korban you’re bringing to the Beis Hamikdash, and it will be a zechus for protection for
you and for Klal Yisroel, in the hope that it will bring us that much closer to offering korbanos in the rebuilt Beis Hamikdash, bimheira b’yameinu, amen. R’ Shmuli Margulies Mesila Chairman, Yerushalayim
THE SHULS AND THE SCHOOLS I’ve heard a lot of people wondering what’s going on; the current situation just doesn’t make sense, especially the fact that our shuls and schools are closed. I want to throw out two thoughts. The first is from a song with words from Nach, which I’ve always enjoyed and tried to understand: “Hinei yamim ba’im… Behold, the days are coming... when I will send a famine in the land. Not a famine of bread or a thirst of water, but of learning the words of Hashem.” This is what we are experiencing. We have food and water, but not schools and shuls. The second thought I’d like to share is that perhaps we are deprived of schools and shuls because we don’t treat them with the respect they deserve. We invest money in so many things, but often the schools aren’t our first priority because we already pay tuition. Then there is also the issue that schools and/or their parent bodies are very selective as to whom they accept and don’t care enough about whether families have schools for their children. As for the shuls, there’s talking, mispallelim showing up late, and other disturbing things going on. I’ll never forget the shock I had one year as I entered a big shul on Simchas Torah night to see janitors setting it up for dancing. I felt it should have been the Yidden happily moving the chairs and benches. Then I, too, got used to the sight... Touched by the Crisis

By: Malka Schneps
PA RS H A S VAY I K R A Our parsha begins, “Vayikra el Moshe‌ — And He called to Moshe, and Hashem spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying, ‘Speak to the Bnei Yisroel and say to them, “When a man of you brings a korban to Hashem‌â€?’â€? (Vayikra 1:1–2). Rashi notes that kriah, calling, is an expression of affection. The Torah then speaks of bringing a korban, right after this expression of affection. The Piaseczna Rebbe explains that every korban was brought in place of a person, just as on fast days we daven, “May the fat and blood that I lose as a result of this fast be accepted as a korban on the altar before You.â€? The Piaseczna Rebbe explains that the suffering of our people is like a korban, which is why Rashi spoke of Hashem’s affection regarding a pasuk involving korbanos. An actual korban, which is brought in place of a person, or yissurim that we suffer in place of a korban, are both Hashem calling to us. And Hashem calls us
because He loves us. The Ramban, commenting on the pasuk above, notes that a korban cleanses our neshamos so that we can come close to Hashem. The Ramban adds that in our days, when there is no Beis Hamikdash, Hashem sends yissurim instead. The illness that is spreading throughout the world and our community is no doubt in the category of yissurim. People are falling ill, even fatally ill, rachmana litzlan. Yeshivos have closed. Shuls have closed. Men are davening without a minyan, often for the first time in their lives. At the same time, we know this is an expression of Hashem’s love. A father does not punish a child unless he loves the child and hopes to enable the child to improve. Rav Kanievsky, shlita, has called upon Klal Yisroel to strengthen the limud haTorah. This is a great challenge, considering the closure of the yeshivos and kollelim. Another lesson from this week’s parsha might help reconcile this. In the Torah, “vayikra is written with a small aleph, an allusion to Moshe Rabbeinu’s humility. The letter aleph is written in an unusual size in another place in the Torah: The very first word of Divrei Hayamim is the word Adam, and it is written with a large aleph. Adam Harishon knew his greatness, and it made him arrogant. We can channel the two alephs, the large aleph and the small aleph, to meet today’s challenge. Perhaps a lesson we can learn from the closure of shuls is that our own personal davening does matter. For various reasons, many people do not see the greatness within themselves. In shul, we might think little of our own davening and rely on the davening of the tzibbur to carry us. Davening alone at home, we are forced to recognize the importance of our own tefillos and to make our davening count. Likewise with learning, a man might think that with hundreds of men learning Torah around him, his own learning is not need-

ed. With Rav Kanievsky directing limud haTorah to be strengthened even as yeshivos close, each man must realize that his own learning is critically important. By learning and davening at home, each person is forced to realize how much the avodah of each of us matters. At the same time, we should recognize the large aleph in those around us. A person who is in a low-risk category for this disease is being asked to stay home to protect the health of the more vulnerable among us. By realizing that all people descend from Adam Haris-
hon and are made b’tzelem Elokim, the low-risk people who stay home to protect others are not only seeing the greatness in others, but are bringing out the greatness in themselves. This, too, is a sacrifice, and may it be accepted as such on high. Finally, knowing that yissurim come in place of korbanos, we can take a lesson from the word yissurim. The word mussar, which refers to self-improvement, literally means to turn oneself. It stems from the shoresh “sur,” which means to turn, as it is written, “Sur meirah va’asei
tov — turn from evil and do good” (Tehillim 34:15). What happens if a person is not heading in the right direction and needs to turn, but he does not “turn” himself by applying mussar? The word yissur means “he turns.” Hashem will have to turn him; yissurim come upon him, and he is forced to change. Hashem is calling upon us with love to change, to grow and to improve. May we all answer the call, and may our yissurim be turned to simcha b’karov. “Yeshuas Hashem k’heref ayin — Hashem’s salvation comes in the blink of an eye.”

Shuls Shuttered and Schools Closed as Coronavirus Cases Continue to Soar It has been a week for the history books as the coronavirus continues its seemingly unstoppable march across the globe, hitting the New York area’s close-knit Jewish communities particularly hard. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases rose dramatically as private testing centers were authorized to swab those exhibiting COVID-19 symptoms. Sunday morning’s numbers of 10,356 coronavirus cases statewide, with 6,211 confirmed in New York City and 262 in Rockland, had nearly doubled by Monday afternoon, with 20,875 cases in all of New York, including 12,305 in the five boroughs and 529 in Rockland. Orange County saw similar counts, with 163 coronavirus cases confirmed by Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office on Sunday morning, a number that had jumped to 389 by Monday. People who might have been contemplating heading upstate to their Sullivan County summer homes were respectfully asked by Public Health Director Nancy McGraw and County Manager Joshua Potosek to remain at their primary residences to avoid bringing the virus into the area. The number of coronavirus cases upstate was 23 as of Monday afternoon. The Times-Herald Record reported that an emergency order issued by Fallsburg Town Supervisor Steven Vegliante suspended all certificates of occupancy for camps and bungalow colonies within the town’s borders, an effort to avoid overburdening health care systems within the area with additional coronavirus patients. Similar sentiments were echoed by Hatzolah of South Florida, which released a letter signed by 30 rabbanim and 22 doctors asking the public to avoid traveling to South Florida during the coronavirus pandemic to avoid potentially exposing its already vulnerable senior population to COVID-19. Those who were planning to go to Florida for Pesach were not the only ones to find themselves rapidly scrambling to arrange yom tov at home. A joint statement released by a coalition of organizations including the Agudah and the Lakewood Vaad called on the Jewish community to cancel their travel plans and to save lives by staying home for Pesach, despite the difficulties. The letter also called for all non-essential activities, such as shopping for non-food items and taking haircuts, be suspended because of the lifethreatening risks associated with the coronavirus. Striking during a time when many hold simchos — during the last few weeks before Pesach and sefirah — the coronavirus had many scrambling to scale down their weddings after authorities converged on halls to break up simchos in Williamsburg, Monsey and Lakewood on March 16 because of the large number of people in attendance. Footage has

emerged in recent days of numerous smaller-sized chasunahs, some held in tents in Monsey backyards and others taking place in Brooklyn driveways. Crown Heights and Boro Park each saw a chasunah that included a simple chuppah, with the chassan and kallah driven through the streets as area residents came out to cheer them on, playing music, dancing and shouting their mazel tov wishes as the new couple passed. In Lakewood, two homeowners found themselves facing fines and criminal charges after police broke up weddings taking place on their property that authorities said violated local orders limiting the size of public gatherings. While orders that prohibited hoarding in Rockland County — by limiting purchases to only two each of highly sought-after items — were lifted after a few days, for the most part, New Yorkers have found themselves facing greater restrictions. By 8 p.m. Sunday night, all gatherings of any size were prohibited, and all non-essential businesses were closed by the state, leaving just a short list of retailers in operation, including groceries, pharmacies, convenience stores, farmers’ markets, gas stations, and hardware and building stores, with restaurants allowed to open only for takeout and delivery orders. With authorities cautioning that the coronavirus could linger for months and that schools could remain closed through the end of the academic year, word of a possible remedy for the coronavirus being identified offered a ray of hope. But Dr. Jonah Rubin of Massachusetts General Hospital advised the public not to believe news circulating social media and local websites, suggesting that the Centers for Disease Control, the Food and Drug Administration, and the National Institute of Health were far more reliable sources of information. Reports touting the combination of an anti-malaria drug and an antibiotic as a miracle cure for coronavirus are, at least for now, unproven, said Dr. Rubin. According to Forbes, Dr. Anthony Fauci, head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, described the protocol’s success combatting the coronavirus as “anecdotal,” observing that testing was not done in a controlled clinical trial. New York State began its official trials on the drug regimen on Tuesday in the hopes of getting the pandemic under control. As of press time, the best way to combat the coronavirus is still social distancing, staying home, and frequent handwashing, said Dr. Rubin, who noted that while davening at home is difficult, it is a necessary precaution. A report on Israeli news site Kikar HaShabat quoted recently released statistics by the Ministry of Health, which found that approximately 29% of those who came down with the coronavirus in Eretz Yisroel were infected in shuls and yeshivos. “There is no medically safe way right now to have a minyan,” warned Dr. Rubin. “People have to stop being so machmir on tefillah b’tzibbur and so maikil on sakanas nefashos.”

Recap: Upon finding an unresponsive Gustav in the hospital, Ulush talks to him, describing Eretz Yisroel and telling Gustav that they will take him there, to Edo. In his semi-conscious state, Gustav realizes that he must get well and give Edo his identity paper so that he’d know who is uncles are in Eretz Yisroel. Miri invites Binyamin for Shabbos. He tells Yaakov about his secret night job, but asks his brotherin-law not to tell his parents about it.
Bratislava — 5774/2014 The man in M.R. Stefanik Airport in Bratislava shifted his small valise to his right hand. Even its relatively low weight was heavy for him. Either his age was catching up with him, or this trip was just not doing him much good. But he was the one responsible for the fact that he had come here, so he had no one else to blame. “Mr. Joe Ludmir?” A taxi driver leaning on his car stood up when he approached. “That’s you, right?” “Right.” The man nodded at him. “I see that you recognized me, despite the years that have passed.” “Of course,” the driver, a local, replied. “You’ve hardly changed.” Sure, only fifteen years had been added to his age since his last visit here, but giving compliments to a tourist who hired one as a driver for his entire trip could surely be very profitable. Joe’s lips curved into a half-smile, and he let the driver put his valise into the trunk. “Is that all?” the driver asked in surprise. “Like then?” “You remember well; I don’t like travel-
ing with too many things.” He ran his fingers through his gray-white hair and straightened his small yarmulke. “If I lack for something, I’m sure you’ll be very happy to buy it for me.” The streets hadn’t changed much in the last fifteen years, and Joe couldn’t decide if he remembered them so well from his wandering around during that visit, or from the many photos he had taken to capture every single corner of the city of his birth. He leaned back and looked out the window in silence. Every so often, between the buildings, he could see the glistening waterline of the Danube, with the Bratislava Castle rising up behind it. “Did you visit the castle last time you were here?” the driver asked when he saw his guest gazing at the castle’s famous turrets. Joe nodded. He didn’t know what it was, but something about this city enveloped him in a cloak of depression. “We’re going to Mamaison, right?” the driver confirmed. “You reserved a room in that hotel, yes?” “Yes, I have a confirmed reservation,” the tourist answered heavily. “How do you like it there?” “It’s excellent. Great personal service and high standards.”

“Because if you are disappointed, sir, my mother rents rooms out to tourists. Everything in her house is clean and pleasant and new. She renovated last year.” “I hope I won’t be disappointed with the hotel.” Joe Ludmir smiled. “I’m sure the service at your mother is excellent too, but if you remember everything about me so well, you certainly remember that I have special requirements regarding food, and Mamaison is able to accommodate me with that.” “Oh, yes.” The driver nodded in understanding. “You’re a religious Jew. You eat only kosher, right?” “Right.” Joe fell silent again. The taxi drove up into the parking lot of the former Jewish Hospital, which had been converted to a hotel in recent years. The driver took the valise out of the trunk and followed his passenger. He put the suitcase down in front of the reception desk, and Joe turned to him. “Thank you,” he said as he pulled out his wallet. “Where to tomorrow and when?” the driver asked. “Do you want to go where all the tourists like to go? The Bratislava Castle, the Museum of Clocks, the National Gallery, or the —” “No, not at all.” Ludmir looked at the sky, which was turning pink, through the open door. “In the morning I’ll have some research to do. I’ll let you know around lunchtime when we’ll be going and where.” “No problem,” the driver said, and Joe turned back to the desk clerk. “First time here?” the desk clerk asked, swiping the credit card. “Oh, no, I see that it’s your second time. Allow us to accept
that as a compliment.” Joe smiled. “Last time wasn’t my first visit in this city, either,” he said. “I was born here. Like most Jewish children in Bratislava of those years.” ***** The second time was not as hard as the first; the third time was even easier, and by the fourth time, he entered the

room without even pausing at the threshold. He put down his hat and jacket and sat down on the chair next to the bed. Shabsi crossed the room to bring over the other chair, and Binyamin stared for a moment at the ceiling fan. Another once or twice on this job, and he’d be able to buy himself a new hat. The grayish hat he had seen the first time still remained etched in his memory, but he could not pinpoint what exactly had frightened him so much then. Obviously, everyone passes away eventually, and it’s very sad, and it’s clear that no one can take anything with them to the grave. But that didn’t mean he had to ruin the new hat that he had gotten for Tzippy’s wedding. For a fraction of a second, his gaze flitted to the tallis resting on the ground, near the opposite wall. He even felt a flash of heat run through him. Hastily, he opened his pocket Mishnayos.
“Rich people,” Shabsi whispered to him as he took a seat beside Binyamin. “Mmm…?” Binyamin queried. “It’s not the time or the place to talk about it, but you can tell that they won’t need to fight over the yerushah here. There’s plenty to go around.” “Nu, uh,” Binyamin concluded the discussion. “You’re right, tzaddik. Let’s learn.” Shabsi wanted to add that he had the feeling they’d get a good tip here, but then it certainly wouldn’t be nice on their part to waste time chatting idly. Instead he took out his own Mishnayos. A quarter of an hour passed, then half an hour, then forty minutes. “Listen a minute, Binyamin.” Shabsi closed his sefer. “I’m really exhausted. I didn’t sleep much last night, and it’s hard for me to make up lost sleep during the day. I’m going out for some fresh air, okay?” Binyamin shrugged and nodded. If it would have been his first night on the “job,” he would have probably been unnerved at the idea of staying alone with a niftar. But now it no longer fazed him. Shabsi left, and Binyamin continued learning. The smell of the paraffin wax slowly dripping from the pair of candles on the floor no longer disturbed him. His brother-in-law Yaakov could say whatever he wanted; he actually felt perfectly fine about the whole thing. The part that he found hard was interacting with the grieving families, but he really tried to avoid that as best he could. Shabsi was the one who took care of all the practical details before and after; he just showed up, said Tehillim or learned Mishnayos, and that was it. He heard footsteps approach-

ing the room. Shabsi must be coming back, he thought. But the footsteps stopped at the door, and no one entered the room. Instead, he heard quiet, hoarse sobbing. Someone close to the niftar. Probably a family member. Binyanim trained his eyes at his sefer and kept learning quietly. “Excuse me,” the voice, a woman’s, choked out from the door. “I… I just got here from the airport, from London. I want… to take leave of my father, privately. Do you mind stepping out of the room? It will just be a few minutes.” Binyamin got up with a lowered gaze and slipped out the door. Yes, Mr. Katz’s apartment was opulent, and he was hardly familiar with such living standards. But what did he know about fancy apartments? He wanted to move away from the room; he couldn’t bring himself to hear what the daughter would tell her deceased father as she parted from him. Still, his sense of responsibility for the job didn’t let him go too far. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the profiles of two silent men in the dining room. One stood near the open window, and the other was resting his head on a nearby wall. He didn’t want to be too close to them either. He stood like a potted plant in the middle of the small hallway and murmured the first perek of Tehillim, then the second and third… and then perek dalet… Just as he finished perek hey, he heard someone clearing her throat from the doorway of the room. He understood that he was supposed to go back and take up his position again. But sitting on the chair where he had been a few moments earlier was a thick envelope. He looked at the chair, wondering what this was about. Mr. Katz’s daughter spoke up from where she stood. “We’ll be

leaving here in about two hours, and I don’t want to take that envelope with me. But I don’t want to leave it here unguarded either…” She was crying again, and Binyamin fixed his gaze on the tips of his shoes. They were pretty rubbed out, though hopefully a good polish would help… “I… I want to ask if you can guard the envelope for now, without talking about it… because it’s very precious… And after the le-
He couldn’t bring himself to hear what the daughter would tell her deceased father as she parted from him. vayah…” She sniffed. “After the levayah, I’ll send someone to pick it up from you.” At the end of her sentence, she choked up again; a few seconds later, she was gone. The envelope was a bit heavy and full of lumps. Binyamin bit his lip but went over to the bed and stuck the envelope into the inside pocket of his jacket. Then he went back to his place and opened his Mishnayos again. A minute later Shabsi walked in. “It’s almost neitz,” he said, somewhat cheerfully, and sat back down. “That means that we should be finished here soon. I think that the rest of the family is starting to arrive. I think I saw the son-in-law from London outside. Within an hour, or even less, we won’t be needed here anymore. I wonder when the levayah is.” They soon became superfluous; the niftar had at least eight sons and sons-in-law, and countless married grandchildren who filled the house and entered the room. Shabsi and Binyamin left; Binyamin walked straight to the door, down the stairs, and outside
the building. Shabsi lingered for a few more minutes inside. Binyamin did not know how his friend was going to find someone to speak to in the subdued hubbub that filled the house. But Shabsi succeeded; he always did. And with a grim expression that matched the atmosphere in the house, he emerged to the stairwell. Once downstairs, his expression became focused as he counted the bills. “Great, they gave very nicely,” he said, and handed Binyamin his share. “It’s a big family, and most of the children are also wealthy. I don’t know if they’re as wealthy as their father, but they’re for sure comfortable. One of the daughters lives in London. If I’m not mistaken her husband is Hartstein, the gvir who supports Ohel Torah. Heard of him?” “No.” “I think I saw him in the dining room, but I’m not sure. Because I would actually like to personally meet this person; people say that whatever he gives Ohel Torah — and trust me, it’s a fancy place — is not even a hundredth of what he has. I wonder if it was him, or if they haven’t arrived yet.” “I’m trying to decide if I should go to sleep for a little bit now,” Binyamin said, not sure why he wasn’t telling Shabsi that the couple from London had indeed arrived. “Something like forty minutes, and then I’ll get up for minyan in yeshivah. Or maybe I should go find an in-between minyan, after neitz but before the regular ones, and take a nap afterward…” “I’m going to sleep now,” Shabsi said. “Not for a little bit, but for a lot! Then I’ll find a minyan somewhere. If I start to daven the way I feel now, I’ll fall asleep in a second.” To be continued...

Biden Sweeps March 17 Primaries THE PULSE: Joe Biden swept to victory in the three
states holding presidential nominating contests on March 17. Biden routed Sanders in Florida and Illinois, and scored a decisive win in Arizona. Ohio was scheduled to hold its primary on March 17, but chose to postpone the vote due to fears of the coronavirus. Biden extended his delegate lead over Bernie Sanders. Biden currently has 1,201 delegates to Sanders’ 896. Despite the crushing blow dealt to his campaign by the scope of Biden’s victories, Sanders has refused to concede the race and has vowed to carry on with his campaign. THE IMPACT: The extent of Biden’s victories makes it
42 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 25, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
virtually impossible for Bernie Sanders to have a realistic shot at securing the nomination. The Democratic primaries follow a process of proportional allocation of delegates based on vote totals of each candidate. Proportional allocation makes it exceedingly difficult for candidates who fall behind to make up significant ground. Sanders’ mighty campaign that once appeared as an unstoppable juggernaut has mostly crumbled. Biden has essentially secured the position of presumptive nominee.
Tulsi Gabbard Withdraws From Race THE PULSE: Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard an-
nounced that she was quitting her quest for the Democratic presidential nomination. She announced that she
was throwing her support behind Joe Biden and endorsing him for president. THE IMPACT: Gabbard is the first female combat veteran to run for president. She won two delegates in the American Samoa caucuses. However, Gabbard was unable to qualify for recent debates and was no longer a serious contender for the nomination. Gabbard’s withdrawal leaves Bernie Sanders and Joe Biden as the only two candidates left standing in a field of candidates that once numbered 29.
DNC Urges Mail-In Voting While Seven States Postpone Primaries THE PULSE: Connecticut, Georgia,
Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland and Ohio have all announced that they will postpone their presidential nominating primaries due to the coronavirus. THE IMPACT: DNC Chairman Tom
Perez said that postponing primaries is not the correct answer. He encouraged states to hold their primaries as scheduled but enable voters to vote remotely. He said that all states should begin mailing ballots to registered voters and adopt “no-excuse absentee voting,” which would allow all voters to vote by mail or to drop off their completed ballot at designated sites.
Trump Wins Enough Delegates to Secure Republican Nomination; Bill Weld Withdraws From Race THE PULSE: President Trump won
the March 17 Republican primaries in Florida and Illinois. The victory
in Florida put him past the 1,276 delegate number required to secure the nomination. Trump currently has 1,339 delegates. Trump’s victory was never in doubt. He trounced those who challenged him. His closest competitor Governor Bill Weld secured one delegate and withdrew from the race. THE IMPACT: Bill Weld won one delegate in Iowa but was unable to mount a challenge to the president due to the immense popularity and strong support that the president receives from Republican voters. Weld pledged to continue fighting. In a letter to supporters, he wrote that while “I am suspending my campaign, I am not suspending my commitment to the nation and to the democratic institutions that set us apart.”
Senator Burr Under Fire for Early Coronavirus Stock Sell-Off THE PULSE: Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee sold off over $1 million in stocks in the weeks before the coronavirus surged in the United States. He sold stocks in industries hard hit by the epidemic, such as hotels, restaurants, shipping and health care. At the time of the sale, Senator Burr was receiving intelligence briefings regarding the coronavirus. Also under scrutiny are stock sales by Senators Kelly Loeffler (R-GA), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and James M. Inhofe (R-OK). THE IMPACT:
These sales raise suspicion that while politicians were outwardly assuring U.S. citizens that the coronavirus posed a small threat to the United States, they had access to classified briefings that made them privy to information that it could be otherwise. For his part, Burr defended his actions. He claimed that his trades were based solely upon following news stories that were readily available to all. In an effort to clear his name, Burr called upon the Sen-
ate to open an ethics investigation into his actions. However, some political analysts called on Burr to fully and publicly explain his actions or resign.
Big Government in the Age of Coronavirus THE PULSE: The Trump administration and Congress are working hand in hand to pass massive coronavirus relief and stimulus bills. These bills include large amounts of government spending for industries at risk and individuals negatively impacted by the worsening economic crisis. Part of the proposed bill consists of sending checks to American households to help them cover their expenses in this time of financial hardship. While these bills have generally received widespread bipartisan support, there have been some vocal critics. Colorado Democratic Governor Jared Polis labeled Trump a “socialist” for bailing out large corporations, thereby allowing the government to control the means of production. THE IMPACT: Republicans and Conservatives have generally been wary of big government stimulus and industry bailouts. Conservative pundits widely criticized President Obama’s 2008 bailout of the auto industry. Conservative media panned Andrew Yang’s proposal for the government to send checks to Americans to guarantee a basic universal income. Traditionally, many Americans have viewed the proper role of government as small and limited. Yet, in this time of national emergency, many are looking for the government to save industries, livelihoods and jobs. They are looking to the government to marshall its power to stop the spread of the disease. There is almost universal support for big government answers to address the growing crisis. It remains to be seen if this crisis will impact the attitude of Americans toward the proper role of government and whether it will have lasting impacts for the future.

“Has anyone heard from Mommy? They aren’t letting us into the hospital.” “When can I expect this cough to subside? It’s so painful.” “Where can I get a test? I think I might have corona.” “Will my boss fire me soon? He says he can’t make payroll anymore.” “When will they let me open my doors again? Will the customers even return?” It seems like the only thing rising quicker than the death toll and positive-case count is the number of questions asked by everyone around us. Uncertainty can be tough to bear, yet the only thing certain these days is that no clear answers will be forthcoming before a lot more damage is done. The past week has turned New York into one of the world’s largest coronavirus epicenters. As of Monday morning, over 20,000 people have tested positive in our state, a number that puts us behind just five countries in the world! The Jewish community has been particularly hard hit, with Hatzolah and local doctors reporting a staggering number of positive test results and patients calling in with what are almost certainly symptoms of the coronavirus. Area hospitals are also beginning to struggle. For now, the biggest immediate concern is the availability of protective gear for doctors and nurses, but the lessons from other countries indicate that we are only days away from hospitals running low on beds, ventilators and
Center in Manhattan, which has already been formally approved, and as Governor Cuomo said on Sunday, “From my perspective, construction can start tomorrow.” Other locations that have been approved locally are two State University of New York campuses in Long Island, as well as the Westchester Convention Center. The governor also said that the state is looking to add a total of over 50,000 hospital beds by reconfiguring hospital space, ending elective procedures, and adding medical staff.
For now, each state is mostly flying solo in their response to the coronavirus, but governors are increasingly pressing the federal government to do more and help turn the tide. the ability to provide critical care. Governor Andrew Cuomo, working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is in the planning stages of turning a number of large centers into makeshift hospitals, which will be able to accommodate thousands of additional patients. One such location is the landmark Jacob Javits
Governors Take Control America is a very large country, and a national strategy of containment would probably be inefficient in some areas while being too stiff in others. For now, each state is mostly flying solo in their response to the coronavirus, but governors

Old Medications Offer New Hope Chloroquine — and a slightly less toxic similar drug hydroxychloroquine — are cheap anti-malaria medications, which have been around since WWII and are known to be safe to humans and effective in slowing the malaria parasites in bodies. While the coronavirus is a virus and not a parasite, a number of preclinical trials have shown that it is effective in slowing certain viral infections similar to the coronavirus. Lab testing and some anecdotal reports suggest that

are increasingly pressing the federal government to do more and help turn the tide. President Trump’s unique style has made it harder to develop a coherent national strategy. After first downplaying the threat for weeks — he continuously said that it’s very much under control — the president has since acknowledged the gravity of the situation, but he has been pushing governors to take more control of matters in their own states, committing to backing them on the federal level. Some governors have pushed back and expressed frustration that the federal government isn’t doing more to help mass-produce the critical items needed by hospitals. Trump announced last week that he is “putting into gear” the Defense Production Act, which gives him the ability to force companies to mass-produce ventilators, protective gear and more; however, FEMA Administrator Peter T. Gaynor said Sunday that it hasn’t been invoked yet, and Trump indicated on Sunday that he is uneasy about “telling companies what to do.” The criticism hasn’t come only from Democratic governors like Cuomo, who called it “a matter of life and death,” and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, who said that states are unable to order the products they need and are overpaying as they bid against each other. Even Republican Governor Larry Hogan of Maryland said that the administration needs to take the lead in securing medical items, saying, “It’s not nearly enough; we’re way behind the curve.”

chloroquine helps inhibit the COVID-19 virus from entering cells. These medications are also used to treat lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, and they are widely available around the globe. Last week President Trump triggered great excitement when he announced that chloroquine has been approved by the FDA to be used in the fight against COVID-19. However, the FDA soon announced: “There are no FDA-approved therapeutics or drugs to treat, cure or prevent COVID-19.” What is happening is that a number of trials are underway, and the president authorized the FDA to set up a large clinical trial to test its efficacy. At a later briefing, Trump said that the drugs have been approved for compassionate use, which is when doctors prescribe a medication to patients in dire condition. As these are registered drugs, doctors are given wide latitude to prescribe them even for diseases they aren’t approved for. Standing near the president, Dr. Anthony Fauci from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, poured cold water on the growing excitement around the drug’s usage when he responded to a reporter’s question about whether the drug is a promising cure: “The answer is no, and the evidence
a drug combination, saying: “HYDROXYCHLOROQUINE & A Z I T H ROM YC I N, taken together, have a real chance to be one of the biggest game changers in the history of medicine.” And he added, “Hopefully, they will BOTH be put in use IMMEDIATELY. PEOPLE ARE DYING, MOVE FAST.” Some doctors have expressed concern that patients who have been on these medications for approved usage are now having a hard time obtaining them. For now, it is very hard to know with certainty how effective these drugs are, and without large-scale trials, all the rumors in which we hear about their effectiveness are not much more than anecdotal evidence.
Local Restrictions Tightened — Community Significantly Affected Whatever we can write about how life has been affected wouldn’t do justice to what people are experiencing in our area. Obviously, there are many people critically ill, and a number have already passed away, r”l. Even some of the patients who don’t require hospitalization are in a vulnerable position where they would probably have been admitted under different circumstances. Our community’s doctors, nurses and Hatzolah members are quite literally putting themselves in harm’s way on a daily basis to help the sick. Many families have lost their source of income, and there’s no guessing if their jobs or businesses will still be there when things return to relatively normal. coronavirus, the social distancing rules are beginning to significantly affect everyone in the state. It seems clear that the brunt of this disease is yet to come, but late Sunday night, President Trump tweeted that “we cannot let the cure be worse than the problem itself.” Governor Cuomo on Monday morning admitted that he’s starting to think about how to eventually wind down the restrictions currently in place, with young people perhaps being allowed out sooner. But first, the public health crisis will need to be managed. More hospital beds will need to be set up, more medical equipment delivered to hospitals, and many more tests rolled out nationally so that those who are sick can be quickly isolated. This is an unprecedented crisis, and there is no way to predict where we go from here. As we enter the month of Nissan, let’s hope that this month of miracles should bring a complete refuah to all cholei Yisroel, and that we soon find ourselves once again enjoying the day-to-day life we, until so recently, took for granted.
Answering More Coronavirus-Related Questions on the Minds of Many Should I get tested if I have symptoms of the coronavirus? The primary symptoms of COVID-19 are fever, coughing and fatigue. The most important thing to do if you experience these symptoms is to stay home so that others aren’t infected. Therefore, unless you are having trouble breathing or have other underlying health issues, there is little benefit to going out for a test. Just stay home together with other members of your household as they are most likely to have contracted it through you.
Will the virus go away once the weather warms up? Most respiratory viruses thrive in cold and dry conditions, which is why we see the flu spread in the winter season. That, and the fact that we spend more time indoors in confined spaces with other people. Some experts have suggested that we can expect the virus to slow down in the summer months, and this is backed by the fact that many of the worst outbreaks have taken place in regions with similar climates. However, since this virus has only been around since November, all of this is speculative, and experts are uncertain as to how it will react to the coming seasonal changes.
Is loss of smell or taste indeed a sign of the coronavirus infection? In recent days, doctors around the world have begun sharing anecdotal findings that loss of smell and taste are often an indication of a positive result, even if individuals have no other symptoms. While it still requires further studying, these findings suggest that those exposed to the virus who show these symptoms should be extra cautious not to spread it further.
If I was exposed to someone who tested positive and didn’t contract it, am I still at risk to get infected from someone else? Yes. Not every person who is in close proximity to
a patient will become infected. The transmission requires droplets of bodily fluids that contain viral particles to enter your body and infect you. If you don’t somehow come into contact with droplets from a patient’s sneeze, cough, laugh, etc., that does not mean you are immune, and you can certainly still catch it from another patient later on.
Can kids get the coronavirus? We aren’t entirely sure why, but little children seem to generally not get sick from COVID-19. However, despite not showing any symptoms, they can still carry the virus around in their bodies and be a source of infection to others. This is why the social distancing rules apply to children just the same as to more vulnerable adults.
Do surgical masks really work to protect from the coronavirus? There clearly is a benefit to patients wearing face masks, as they prevent viral droplets from getting out into the air around them. As far as the general public using masks to protect themselves, the answer isn’t so clear. Health officials have asked people to stop hoarding N95s and surgical masks, as they are more urgently required for doctors and nurses who treat the ill. Some have gone so far as to say that it serves no purpose for regular people and might even be counterproductive. However, if one wears a regular mask right, it stands to reason that less viral droplets will end up in his or her mouth, with the added bonus that it is an easy reminder for the wearer not to touch his or her face.
Can COVID-19 be spread through food? It’s never a good idea to share food, and this is especially true during these times. However, (unshared) food cannot be contaminated with the coronavirus as the disease only spreads from person to person. Ironically, food packaging is a higher source of concern as it is touched by others before the eater touches it and puts their hand to their face. Exercise caution and wash hands thoroughly.

COVID-19 has hit our shores, and each of us has been affected in our own way. The Boro Park View reached out to people of all ages and stages to peek into their homes and perhaps glean some strategies and skills from others coping with this crisis. May Hashem help that nobody should suffer seriously from this aggressive virus and that we be zoche to Moshiach’s speedy arrival. 54 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
M.B. of Boro Park, as the mother of four young ones and the gracious hostess of an extra toddler, was fully qualified to answer the first question. When I asked her what her biggest challenge related to the coronavirus is, I was duly impressed with her clarity on the subject. “In order to put this whole thing in perspective and not get carried away with negativity,” she said, “I had to focus that this is the reality, and that my reaction today will create tomorrow’s memories. I want them to be good ones.” I spoke to Nechy, a local car service dispatcher, and inquired if the business had been affected by the coronavirus. “Are you kidding?” She was surprised at my naivete. “This is usually our busiest season, with phones ringing off the hook. Now the calls are trickling in one at a time; we literally have only a few
calls an hour. I’ve never been so bored on the job before.” Yitty E., a high school freshie, was asked what she
Purell from a third-party vendor, which she hopes will still arrive, and each time she’s at the grocery, she finds herself subconsciously purchasing an extra package of wipes... I asked P.T. of Monsey, a mother of three little children, how she’s dealing with the kids home, and whether she’s on a more relaxed schedule or if she’s trying to keep the structure. Morning routine at home has not changed, she shared. The kids wake up on time, get dressed, and eat a wholesome breakfast. She then prepares a snack in each briefcase and lines up the kitchen chairs to serve as a makeshift bus. They start each day with davening and activities, then eat the snack she prepared. Next the kids listen to a Pesach CD, and she teaches them the Kadesh Urchatz. Then they have a proper lunch and play time, and the same cute bus brings them home in the afternoon. I called Mrs. Braun, a veteran first grade teacher, and asked her how her job was affected by this crisis. Her commitment and connection to her students really came through when she repeatedly expressed what a big loss it is for them to miss this crucial school time. She said the first two days were chaotic and demanded hours of preparation — she needed to have two weeks’ worth of worksheets ready. Although she keeps a hotline running each day, it’s

She said that she locks herself into a room and takes some quiet time off to read a book or shmooze on the phone with friends. Fraidy R. of Boro Park has elementary-aged boys and girls in a variety of ages. She’s amazed at how the chedarim and schools were able to pull off such amazing phone programs on such short notice. The lessons are appropriate for each age group, she said, and keep the kids entertained and motivated along with hartzige messages. Some of her boys’ rebbis even called in person to follow up and inquire whether the kids are able to follow along. She is so appreciative. On the technical side, she activated two new cell phones that were sitting around to accommodate the need. I spoke to Chaya S. of Brooklyn and asked her what she stocked up on in order not to get stuck without essentials. She said that, acting on other people’s panic, she bought gallons of hand soap and keeps a dispenser at each sink. She also ordered Clorox wipes and
not possible to teach new skills over the phone — it’s mainly focused on review — so she had to tweak the curriculum, and prepare motivating stories and exciting programs to keep the young kids interested enough to remain on the line. She hopes that once the crisis passes, school will be extended for another month to make up for the lost learning time. Efraim T., a young cheder boy, seemed pretty content with his schedule so far. His cheder has a five-hour program running from 10:00 to 3:00 daily with three breaks in between. He has a shiur with his father and brothers each evening, which he enjoys. He also learns the L’daas program and is enrolled in a craft program, Talant. He hopes that he will find the routine satisfying for as long as the new normal reigns. Toby M. of Monsey has a large family with a few bachurim home from yeshivah, as well as a kimpeturin convalescing in her home. Asked about her biggest corona-related ex-

the evening. I asked Etty K. how she’s getting on with Pesach cleaning with six little kids underfoot. She said that at this point she’s focusing solely on the areas in which she’ll cook and eat on Pesach, because those must be fully kosher l’Pesach and she has no option of taking shortcuts there. Layie T. works in a health food store, and I asked her if she has any interesting stories to share. She chuckled and shared that a woman called frantically, saying that she was showing symptoms of the virus and that her husband was so nervous — “Is there something you’d recommend that can calm him down?” I asked Mrs. Davis what she stocked up on. “Crafts,” was her one-word answer. Ours is a nation that has inherited a knack to find humor in the most serious of situations, and the current pandemic in no exception. “What was the best joke you’ve heard on the subject?” I asked a local school principal. She had one on the tip of her tongue: “When a mother who is homeschooling suddenly finds that she’s talking to herself, is she losing her mind? Or is it just PTA?” And while I was still chuckling, she added, “But I think it’s a staff meeting!” Rabbi Mayer, a veteran maggid shiur, said it’s important for people to know that it’s not a mitzvah to bring everyone into a state of panic. People are worried enough without the extra drama. Next I called a yeshivah bachur and asked how he was faring without the yeshivah struc-

ture. He complained that he’s finding it very hard, because his mother is keeping him and his brother under “house arrest” and he’s “plotzing!” They did set up a coffee room in the dining room, he shared, for them to enjoy while they learn with their chavrusos on the phone. And with a percolator,
His mother is keeping him and his brother under house arrest and he’s “plotzing!” hot cups, coffee, hot cocoa mixes, sugar, milk, and a variety of teas, this is the one thing he enjoys at home over yeshivah. He also shared that he set himself up a shiur tzimmer on the porch, away from all the noise and distractions. Shaina and Yitty M., at nine and seven years old, were very excited to be part of this interview. I asked them what the best activity they did was, and they told me about their family scrapbook project. “Every day we take two papers of the same color. On the first page we write three things we did that day.” They then skim through magazines and circulars to find a picture to illustrate it. Afterward, on the second page, each of the children writes one thing they thank Hashem for. I asked a senior from Brooklyn if she can think of any positivity that will result from this virus. She believes this will be the catalyst to ease the pressure of making extravagant affairs that have become out of hand,
and she thinks simchos will once again be celebrated on a smaller scale, within the baalei simcha’s means. A grateful great-grandmother, E.K., was asked about her opinion on the recommended isolation, especially for people in her age bracket, and which safety measures she’s taking to protect herself from the virus. She responded that she’s definitely taking the recommended isolation seriously and mentioned that it’s doable for her because of her wonderful children who shop for her, do outdoor window visits, and call in constantly to check up on her. She’s also taking the recommended vitamin C and immune boosters, but her main hishtadlus is increased tefillah, which includes the three kapitlach for shmirah recommended by the Skulener Rebbe, zt”l ( קמ"ב, ק"ל,)פ"ג, as well as kapitel ' עeach evening, as recommended by Rav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a. Mrs. K. also started to say Parshas Haketores, which is known to ward off a mageifah, and recites the bracha of asher yatzer inside with increased kavanah. She truly feels enveloped by Hashem’s protection. Throughout the day she takes advantage of the various phone lines that now serve the dual purpose of chizuk and entertainment. The hishtadlus of tefillah really pertains to all of us in this chaotic, confusing time, when every ehrliche Yid knows to turn only to the Ein Od Milvado, and put his sole trust in Hashem. May we all tap into its amazing kochos, be spared from today’s dangers, and merit the Geulah, bimheirah b’yameinu, amen.

I have a confession to make. Contrary to popular belief, I don’t have a freezer fully stocked with cakes weeks before Pesach. I try to bake one or two cakes before yom tov and a couple more on chol hamoed. Pesach is a time for mesorah. Each family’s chumros strengthen their connection to the past and enhance the unique beauty of this yom tov. Two of these recipes are cherished traditional fare, and one has become an Acharon Shel Pesach tradition, for when we use more ingredients. Notes: If using homemade potato starch, make sure it’s completely dry before using it in your baking. If you own a heavy-duty mixer, you can bake the following cakes in one bowl by adding yolks to the beaten snow and then proceeding with the rest of the ingredients.

Nostalgia. This light and fluffy cake served with chateau and fruit is a Hungarian delicacy that my dear grandmother would so lovingly prepare when we spent Pesach at her home. Note: Chateau is very delicate and must be prepared right before serving. Cake Ingredients 9 eggs, separated
1 cup plus 2 T. sugar, divided
1 cup plus 2 T. potato starch
1 T. lemon juice
Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Beat egg whites. Add half a cup of the sugar and continue beating until stiff. 2. In a separate bowl, beat yolks with the rest of the sugar until thick and light in color. On low speed, add potato starch and juice. Carefully combine with whites. 3. Pour into a two-piece tube pan or two medium-sized loaf pans. Bake 1 hour for tube pan, or 45 to 50 minutes for loaf pans. Allow to cool in oven.
Chateau Constant beating is the trick here to prevent eggs from curdling.
Ingredients 3 eggs, separated
½ cup sugar
½ cup sweet white wine (I use Cream White Concord)
Directions
Feeling Canned?
1. Place yolks and sugar in a 4-quart saucepan. Beat with whisk until thick and light in color. Add wine and continue beating. Add whites slowly while beating vigorously. 2. Turn on flame and bring to a boil while beating the entire time. Remove from flame and beat for a bit longer. Serve immediately.

Our favorite recipe from our favorite aunt — thank you, Mirel, for sharing it! The original recipe used walnuts, but I prefer filberts.
Ingredients 11 eggs, separated 1½ cups sugar, divided ¾ cup potato starch 6 oz. ground walnuts or filberts 1 T. coffee dissolved in 2 tsp. hot water
Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Beat whites with half of sugar. 2. In a separate bowl mix the remaining ingredients, and fold gently into the egg whites. 3. Pour batter into a non-disposable two-piece tube pan. Bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Allow to cool in oven. Please note that this cake must be carefully cut out of the pan.

Grape Jam
Sponge Cake
This recipe makes more jam than is needed for the cake. You can use the extra jam to sandwich cookies together, on your favorite nut cake, or to simply spread on matzah as a delicious treat for the kids! Keep the jam refrigerated.
Ingredients
Ingredients 1⅓ cups grape juice 1 cup sugar Juice of a half lemon
Directions 1. In a 3-quart pot, stir together the grape juice, lemon and sugar. Bring it to boil on a high flame, and allow it to boil vigorously for 2 minutes. 2. Lower the flame just a bit, maintaining a vigorous boil, and cook for 6 to 7 minutes (and not more), stirring frequently throughout. Toward the end, keep a close eye on the color and smell of the liquid; you don’t want it to burn. Your jam should be slightly heavier than a liquid at this point, thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. 3. Allow the jam to cool at room temperature for 2 hours, and then pour into a container and refrigerate overnight. It will thicken as it cools, reaching a consistency of a very thin jam.
6 eggs, separated 1 cup sugar Heaping ½ cup potato starch 2 T. oil 1 T. squeezed orange juice Chopped walnuts (or other nut) for garnish, optional
Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350°. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper and set aside. 2. Beat the egg whites and sugar until you have a very stiff snow. Gently add yolks, potato starch, oil and juice. 3. Pour batter into prepared cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool for a half-hour.
Assembly 1. With a sifter, lightly sprinkle the top of the cake with potato starch. (This prevents the jam from seeping into the cake too much.) Brush off the extra starch with your hands. 2. Flip the cake onto a clean piece of parchment paper. 3. Very gently remove the parchment paper attached to the bottom of the cake. 4. Again, use a sifter to lightly dust the cake with potato starch. 5. Using a sharp knife, spread the jam, a little bit at a time, onto the cake. Make sure to keep the jam layer very thin. 6. Roll up the cake jellyroll style, lifting the edge of the parchment paper to help you with the rolling. 7. Optional: Spread some more of the jam around the outside of the roll, and garnish with chopped walnuts or roasted sliced almonds. 8. Refrigerate or freeze, depending on how soon you’d like to use it.

The sun is beating down on his scarf-wrapped head, the wind whipping sand into his eyes. Despite this, Mamadou forges on, the 104-degree heat no longer a deterrent in the face of dire need. Water. He must get the herd to water, for should the cattle die, his family would not be long to follow. At sixteen years old, Mamadou knows the secret of the desert: In water, there is life. For three days he herds his cattle, urging them forward, toward water, toward life. Acacia trees scattered along the way provide the cows with just enough sustenance to continue carrying their tired bodies, while the scant amount of milk he is able to obtain prevents Mamadou from succumbing to dehydration. Here in the Sahara, the dry season always means a race against time‌ and against the largest mammals on earth, who are also eager to locate water. Mamadou hurries along, hoping to reach Lake Banzena before the elephants arrive and churn the river into a muddy mess. Finally, they arrive‌ and the elephants are already there. As the cattle head toward the river, an elephant charges, claiming it as her own, but Mamadou stands his ground in front of the cattle, yelling in a show of bravado. The elephant stops, and then retreats, herding her pack further down the river. Mamadou’s cows move forward and drink, drink, drink. For in water, there is life.

The Harshest Places on the Planet
With their low water yield, deserts are known to be of the harshest places on Earth, where man and animal alike must fight to remain alive, to obtain the water their bodies so desperately need. For this reason, desert tribes have historically feuded over strategic access to sources of water. For he who owned a well, a spring or a river was wealthy — a man blessed with the ability to keep his kin alive. Water is everything in the desert. It is sought after, fought over, hoarded and even deified — the Mitzriim being the prime example of this. With their great reverence for water, they viewed the Nile as ultimately capable of both giving and taking life. Because of this, Makas Dam came as a particularly painful assault on them and their beliefs, the One Above clearly showing the world that it is not water itself that has power, but the One Who created it. This was a lesson for the Yidden, who had been steeped in idolatrous Egyptian culture, as well. Led into the midbar, far from the Nile, the Yidden were forced to distance themselves from reliance on the created, and instead, learned to rely solely on the Creator. For three days they traveled and did not find water, until finally… bitter water at Marah, made sweet only through Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s command. For 40 years, the Yidden received their water directly from the Hand of Hashem, training them — training us — that the source of life, bracha and bounty comes only from the One Above. Let us explore notable deserts of the world and remember the Yidden who were “b’eretz tziyah v’ayef bli mayim.” Let us also bear in mind that water is representative of Torah, and just as our bodies rely upon frequent and abundant water, so, too, our souls constantly thirst for Torah. May we always have “water” in abundance.

THE SINAI DESERT Full of rocks, dust and mountains, the Sinai Desert makes for difficult sojourns. Here is the view from a mountain called “Mount Moses. Despite having a name that testifies to the fact that even the umos haolam recount the history of Yetzias Mitzrayim, the specific location of Har Sinai is a subject of great dispute.
THE WHITE DESERT These fascinating rock formations are made of chalk. Sandstorms that blow through the area wear away at the edges, sculpting the chalk into eye-catching forms.
THE BLACK DESERT Not too far from the White Desert is the Black Desert, which has a darkened appearance due to the black basalt and dolerite (types of stones), as well as volcanic rocks, that dot the landscape.

Hot Deserts
SAHARA The Sahara is the world’s largest hot desert, and is the type most of us envision in our mind’s eye when we hear the word “desert.” Here you’ll find those iconic scenes of package-laden camels, black-clothed Bedouins, and ever-shifting dunes of sand. The desert is enormous, running through a total of eleven countries.
What is a Desert?
A desert isn’t defined by the amount of water it contains, but rather by the amount of annual precipitation it receives. According to the commonly accepted definition, deserts receive less than ten inches of rainfall per year and are known for sparse vegetation. For comparison’s sake, New York gets roughly 45 to 50 inches of annual rainfall.

POLAR DESERTS It may come as a surprise that the world’s two largest deserts are actually located in polar regions. The largest, the Antarctic Polar Desert, covers about 5.5. million square miles. These polar deserts are not the tundra, where animal and plant life are sustainable; they are gigantic swaths of frozen land that are nearly completely devoid of life, though some plant species have been discovered.
DEATH VALLEY, MOJAVE DESERT Death Valley in the Mojave Desert in California is worthy of mention, as it bears the world record as the hottest place on Earth, with a 1913 reading coming in at a whopping 134 degrees! Due to unique geological factors, the heat gets locked into the valley instead of rising, creating, in essence, a giant convection oven.

Designed for the Desert
THORNY DEVIL
SIDEWINDER
This prickly-looking Australian native has special skin that absorbs water. Any morning dew or puddles that it comes across enter the skin, and the water is then transported through the scales to the reptile’s mouth. Makes water collecting a whole lot easier!
Instead of slithering across the ground, the unique sidestepping action of the sidewinder snake helps to keep the snake a little bit cooler by lifting part of its body off the ground each time it moves. Additionally, this method of moving enables the snake to have traction on shifting sand.
BAT-EARED AND FENNEC FOXES These foxes have extra-large ears that help to regulate their body temperature. With lots of blood vessels in the ears, heat is diverted away from the core of the body so it can easily be dispersed, keeping the foxes cooler when temperatures soar.
Bat-Eared Fox
Surviving in the desert takes special skill, certain adaptations, and a whole lot of siyata d’Shmaya. Animals that live in desert habitats have been uniquely designed to help them thrive in the harsh, arid conditions.

DORCAS GAZELLE
SCORPIONS
This beautiful gazelle drinks when given the chance, but it doesn’t actually need to. It has the ability to obtain all the liquid it needs from the vegetation it feeds on.
The bane of all two-legged desert-dwellers, the scorpion is photophobic, always seeking to run away from the sun. This means that in the desert it’s always important to check inside shoes before putting them on… Scorpions typically hunt at night to keep cool, and many can survive for up to a year without eating, just in case the pickings are slim!
EMUS AND CAMELS Though significantly different in many ways, emus and dromedary camels both share a unique desert feature: nictitating membranes, which are third eyelids on each eye that are translucent. This eyelid can slide over the eye to protect it from dust and sand. The dromedary camel, of course, is the ultimate desert dweller. It has two rows of eyelashes and heavy eyebrows as additional eye protection. It can also seal its nostrils shut to keep sand out of its nose. The fat in its hump can be converted into energy to keep the camel going during periods of low food and water intake, enabling the camel to survive even when 30% of its body’s water has been lost. No other animal can do that!

ere’s a riddle for you: What has a base that’s the size of four football fields, is the height of a Manhattan skyscraper, and was built with copper chisels and granite hammers by 20,000 workers for over twenty years?
You probably guessed the answer. It’s the pyramids of Egypt. The Egyptian pyramids are an iconic landmark, a super popular tourist destination, and a source of mystery and wonder to scholars and laymen alike. Close to fifteen million people visit the pyramids at Giza every year, making it one of the world’s most famous landmarks and a bucketlist destination for people of every culture and nation.

So What Are the Pyramids of Egypt? About three miles southwest of Cairo lies Giza, the third largest city in Egypt with a population of 2.4 million people. Chances are that nobody would have paid much attention to Giza, were it not for the majestic pyramids that are located at its border. These iconic structures that defy logic and have withstood the test of time are why people beat a path to this city’s door and why it has benefited from a multi-milliondollar tourist industry. There are actually over 100 ancient pyramids in Egypt of varying sizes and different historical periods. All are located on the west side of the Nile River, because the west symbolized death and the afterlife for the Egyptians. And Egyptian pyramids are all about the Pharaohs and their “afterlife.” According to legend, ancient Egyptians believed that their Pharaohs never really died. They just moved on to a comfortable and satisfying afterlife. To enjoy that afterlife properly, it was best for them to be preserved, if you will, in huge, elaborate, indestructible structures that were filled with all kinds of treasures and artwork to keep Pharaoh happy. Here’s a disclaimer, though. In case you were wondering, none of those artifacts can be found in the pyramids today, as they have long been looted by grave robbers over the centuries. Nevertheless, it’s the massive pyramids themselves that are of tremendous interest to so many visitors. By far the most famous and majestic of all Egyptian pyramids are the three at Giza.
fu, Khafre and Menkaure, who were actually three generations of one Pharaoh family. The largest pyramid is the Pyramid of Khufu, also known as the Great Pyramid of Giza. It stands 449.5 feet tall and 755 feet long at the base on each side, spanning an area of 13 acres. Over 2.3 million huge stones blocks, each one weighing over 2,000 pounds, were used to build the pyramid. All of those stones were somehow chiseled to perfection, and every one of them fits perfectly in its place like a massive three-dimensional jigsaw puzzle. It is said that the stones fit together so well, you can’t even fit a razor blade between the cracks. Truly an engineering marvel. It took 20,000 workers about twenty years to build the Great Pyramid. And they built it back in the day, before cranes, bulldozers, forklifts and sophisticated tools and machinery were invented. Instead, they used primitive stone and copper tools to hammer away at the massive limestone rocks until they were carved out to perfection. But their clever engineering and architectural skills were certainly not primitive. And that’s why Egyptologists until today are scratching their heads trying to figure out how these massive stones were placed with such incredibly precise accuracy that they have survived several major earthquakes and still exist even today. Structurally, the pyramids looked the same in ancient times as they do today — with one significant difference. The pyramids were originally covered with a layer of highly polished white limestone that reflected the sun’s rays and shone brilliantly in the hot desert. It was no doubt an amazing sight. But the limestone layer was removed from the pyramids in the nineteenth century by Muhammed Ali Pasha, the
They Are Big. Really Big. According to Egyptologists (these are the guys who are so obsessed with ancient Egypt that they dedicate their lives to studying about it), the oldest pyramid in the Giza pyramid complex was built 4,500 years ago. The three main pyramids are said to have been the tombs of three Pharaohs named Khu-

A Lifetime of Digging What makes an Egyptologist dedicate his life to learning about a civilization that hasn’t been around for centuries? What is the attraction? Egyptologist Zahi Hawass was once asked in an interview which era he’d choose to live in, had he had the option of going back to live in ancient times. He immediately answered, “The time of the Great Pyramid.”
king. They were paid by the king. These are the technicians who cut the stones and there [were] workmen who move[d] the stones and they [came] and work[ed] in rotation.”
The Majesty and the Mystery
There’s plenty of mystery and intrigue surrounding the building of the pyramids to keep Egyptologists super busy for a long time. Clearly, we have more questions than answers. How did the builders carry such huge slabs of limestone, each weighing over a ton? This is even more perplexing when we consider that most historians believe the rocks were quarried from a site over 500 miles away. And how did they manage to bring them on-site, and then haul them so high? Equally mysterious is how these ancients were able to construct the pyramids with such astonishing precision. Not only are the structures perfectly aligned with each other, they are also aligned with the North Star at 0.067 degrees.
Clearly, it’s the thrill of the search and the ultimate discovery that keeps him motivated. “I believe,” said Hawass, “that we’ve only found about thirty percent of Egyptian monuments, and that seventy percent still lies underground.” He concludes, “You never know what the sand will hide in terms of secrets.”
Ottoman governor of Egypt, who decided to use the limestone as material to build a mosque.
Who Built Them? For centuries, people believed that the Giza pyramids were built by Egyptian slaves. That led to the theory, since debunked, that it may have been the Yiddishe slaves who built them during Galus Mitzrayim. After all, weren’t the Jewish people forced into backbreaking labor by building elaborate cities for their Egyptian masters? It’s an intriguing narrative, but largely dismissed as untrue. First of all, the pyramids are believed to have been built many years before the Jewish people were slaves in Mitzrayim. But there’s more. Recent excavations at the site have uncovered a cemetery with 600 skeletons of people who are believed to have been among the workers who built the pyramids. Evidence shows that these workers were actually skilled craftsmen, not slaves. They were paid for their work and well taken care of. We know they were well fed, because cattle bones were found in the immediate area (rib steaks, anyone?). We also know they were respected because it was a huge honor to be buried so close to the Pharaohs themselves. According to Egyptologist Zahi Hawass, “It was the Egyptians who built the pyramids. They are not the Jews as has been said. They are not from a lost civilization or from outer space. They are Egyptian, and their skeletons are here and were examined by scholars and doctors. I really believe they were permanent workmen who were working for the

These questions have been haunting Egyptologists for decades, leading many of them to come up with their own personal theories. For example, there’s evidence of a canal of sorts leading up to the pyramids from the Nile river. It led to a moat that surrounded the perimeter of the Giza pyramid complex. Assum-
ing that the canal and the moat were filled with water, historians believe that the workers “floated” the massive rocks to the site, and then elevated them to the upper levels via intricate water shafts. Other historians believe they simply used ramps to reach the higher levels. At the end of the day, we don’t really know. And that mystery is part of the allure of the ancient pyramids that have fascinated mankind for centuries.
What’s Inside the Pyramids? If visitors to Giza hope to see spectacular ancient tombs inside the pyramids, they will probably be disappointed. For most people, the inside experience is mediocre. The ventilation is poor and the passageways are narrow. One tourist described it as “hot, stuffy and cramped.” Another person wrote, “I felt like I was going to faint because of the elevated heat.” The Great Pyramid, massive as it may be, houses only three chambers. In order to access them, visitors have to maneuver staircases and tunnels. Once inside, there’s really nothing much to see, as anything worthwhile has already been looted or stolen. Yet apparently, it’s part of the experience, and tourists seem willing to venture inside even if they will probably not enjoy it.
The Pyramids Today If you are considering a visit to the pyramids of Giza, you might first want to discuss it with your rav. A pasuk in Devarim indicates that it could be halachically problematic to travel to Egypt. There are various opinions on what this means exactly, so best to check with your personal halachic authority. With all its majesty and mystery, the Giza pyramids are still a Middle Eastern
98 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 25, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
tourist trap, so visitors need to be prepared to be hounded by local salesmen who are eager to earn a buck. Tours leave from Giza proper by bus, which drives them up to the pyramid plateau area where tourists are then approached by peddlers who will offer them a ride on a horse or camel to the actual pyramids. Tickets to enter the general area cost about $20, but visitors should be prepared to spend more to enter the pyramids themselves. It may sound cool to climb up the side of the pyramids for an awesome photo op, but it can also get someone attempting the adventure arrested, as it is illegal (with the exception of the rare tourist being granted permission to do so). The Egyptian authorities take this seriously. Just recently, a Russian/American celebrity, Vitaly Zdorovetskiy, spent five days in an Egyptian jail because he decided to climb the Great Pyramid, photograph the experience, and publicize it. “I was locked up in Egypt because I climbed the pyramids of Giza,” he wrote. “I don’t wish this upon anybody.”

Cultivated and Harvested in Eretz Goshen By: Yisroel Bass
The preparations have begun. It’s 6:30 a.m. The sunshine is starting to spill over the tops of the trees and onto the field. I whisper, “L’shem matzos mitzvah,” and turn the key in the ignition. The tractor makes its way over to the field. No, we won’t be harvesting today. It’s August and the harvest is already more than a month behind us. The wheat and spelt are securely sitting in barrels in the barn, protected with double seals so that it remains “shmurah.” I press forward the hydraulic level and lower the plows into the ground. Last week, the hay cutter removed the long, luscious hay, leaving behind a beautiful, manicured field. Three long strips of freshly cut sod are lifted and flipped onto the field, exposing the roots

and dirt below. The sun bakes the roots, and the grass immediately begins to wither and decay. The buried grass will continue to slowly decompose, turning back into basic minerals and nutrients that will serve as a natural fertilizer for the wheat and spelt that will be sowed on this field in a month’s time. In most houseCombine arriving at the farm holds, Pesach preparations begin in earnest immediately following Purim. Others start with the bedrooms right after Tu B’Shvat. The fields require a lot more time. A field plowed in August will be sowed in September, and reaped in July. The grain will sit in storage until at least December, when it is milled, sifted and bagged. Matzos are then baked in Shevat or Adar. Nearly two years of preparation go into every matzah. It’s often said that farmers, by nature, must have a lot of faith. It takes a large leap of faith to undertake an action that will first bear “fruit” two years later. Not only can the field be destroyed by the weather, but the grain itself can be rendered chometz even if it does grow to full maturity. Nothing is guaranteed. The first year I grew wheat for matzos, I had no idea how we were going to harvest it. Yes, I had a tractor and a plow, but besides preparing the field for planting, I had no plan for the harvest. “M’gebt zich an eitzah,” I thought. Throughout the winter, I scoured farm classifieds and listings, until I was able to find an antique combine harvester in southern New Jersey. The combine was a gas-powered John Deere 45. Based on the serial number, we estimated that the machine was built
in the late ‘40s or early ‘50s. It was so old that many of the components were made out of wood, something unheard of in today’s plasticsaturated world. The machine was a real metziah. While a new combine can run in the $1 million range, we walked away with a functioning combine for a mere $2,000. Turning on that machine for its first shmurah wheat harvest was a real joy. Sheaves of wheat rolled into the header, where they were threshed inside its belly, winnowed by its internal fan, and then deposited via elevator to the grain bin behind my seat. That first harvest took place on Erev Shabbos. I had thought that with such a machine, everything would go smoothly and super easily. But there is no such thing as easy on a farm. While the harvest went relatively smoothly, when it came to unloading the grain, that was another story. Combines are equipped with an auger, or a pipe with a screw inside of it, that is used to unload the grain. The opening for the auger is a small hole at the bottom of the grain bin. When I approached the barn to unload our first harvest, I engaged the lever to unload the grain and… nothing. The auger wouldn’t spin. The weight of nearly 1,000 pounds pounds of fresh wheat on the auger’s screw was simply too much for it to handle. As I found out later, newer combines have a little metal roof over the auger hole to reduce the pressure of the grain weighing directly on the screw. A newly plowed field on Yiddishe Farm

Shabbos was creeping closer and closer, and now I had a problem. The 1,000 pounds of wheat would now need to be unloaded by hand. Fortunately, we had a minyan of Shabbos guests who had arrived early enough to roll up their sleeves and break into a sweat “l’shem matzos mitzvah.” With less than an hour to go before Shabbos, the grain was unloaded safe and sound with the help of our guests, a couple of shovels and an empty wine box. In the seven years since, we have learned to be better prepared. Since 2014, we have been baking our matzos at the Monsey Matzoh Bakery in Kiryas Joel, NY. As such, we are under the hashgacha of Rabbi Yechiel Steinmetz. While the Pesach prep begins with the plowing in August, the rav doesn’t get involved until we get closer to the harvest. First, the combine needs to be spotless. Even after it is cleaned, we are careful to discharge the first cut wheat onto the ground as an added precaution to ensure that no old grain remains mixed together with the newly cut wheat. A lot of knowledge goes into inspecting the wheat in the field. There is a lot to know to be able to determine whether a field’s grain is kosher for Pesach or not. The baseline litmus test, for both the field and the mashgiach, is the identification of problematic grain. Wheat can sprout on the stalk if it gets wet after it ripens. Knowing where to look for the splitting and sprouting is very important. Once the grain is ruled kosher for Pesach, the field itself must be checked for wild garlic and mustard, items that if
cut together with the wheat would render it unacceptable for use in matzos. By year three of our matzah production, we thought we had everything down pat. Every year we tried pushing the harvest to a couple of days earlier in order to procure even more mehudar grain for our matzos, and in 2015 we pushed it a little too early. I remember that year well. The matzah bakery owner himself came down to view the harvest. Walking through the field, he exclaimed,
the combine, taking in the grain as soon as it was cut. All the workers and volunteers were standing at the ready when I yelled out, “l’shem matzos mitzvah,” and turned the key. Plump, lightbrown wheat berries started making their way through the combine, and then… a terrible sound. The wheat wasn’t yet completely ripe, and as such, was both much heavier and much gummier than ripened wheat. The weight of the wheat snapped a lower auger that moves the winnowed grain from the bottom of the combine to the grain bin elevator, and wheat started pouring out from the side of the machine. If that wasn’t bad enough, the grain that did make it to the grain bin completely gummed up the unloading auger, and a substance that looked similar to oatmeal filled the entire tube of the auger. Out in the wheat field there is a lot of talk about numbers and percentages. What do numbers and percentages have to do with matzos, or wheat, for that matter? Every living thing has a certain percentage of moisture inside of it. Grain is no different. When we speak of the moisture inherent in grain, we are not referring to external wetness, like dew or rain, but rather the water that the plant pulled out of the field in order to grow and produce food. Stored wheat has moisture content of about 10%. The moisture level in green wheat, while it is still growing, can measure as much as 50% or more. In general, wheat should not be harvested when its moisture level is
In most households, Pesach preparations begin in earnest immediately following Purim. Others start with the bedrooms right after Tu B’Shvat. The fields require a lot more time. “This is the most beautiful field of wheat in America!” By then we had a new system for unloading the grain so as to reduce the weight on the auger to keep it spinning: As the combine would make its way through the field, a wagon with grain bags would ride parallel to

above 16%. Higher than 16%, and the grain will begin to rot, and even sprout, in the storage bags. Depending on the climate and the weather, it may not be possible for the grain to be cut late enough in the summer to reach such a low moisture point. For matzos, it might mean that a rainstorm will render an entire field chometz before the “ideal” percentage is reached. Depending on your rav, there is even an opinion that grain should be harvested at a very high moisture point to ensure that it doesn’t sprout in the field. Harvest too early, and you will have seeds, which even after drying, may not be viable to sprout, meaning that you can have a kosher-for-Pesach cracker that is neither chometz nor matzah (matzah must be made from grain that has the possibility of becoming chometz). Drying is the make-it-or-break-it part of the harvest. Grain coming off the field at temperatures of over 80 degrees with moisture content of over 16% is a recipe for rot, and even chometz (if the grain begins to sprout). The grain must be quickly transported to a protected facility where it can be cooled and dried. While there are giant grain dryers that work like clothes dryers using propane or natural gas fires to dry the grain, these are very expensive to purchase and run, and they present a slew of halachic problems depending on how they are cleaned and how hot they operate. At the Yiddishe Farm, we employ a home-built system of
racks, fans and dehumidifiers to both cool down and dry the grain when it comes off the field. Depending on the moisture level in the grain when it is harvested, this process can take between a couple of days and a whole month. While the grain is spread on the drying racks, it must be under constant supervi-
sion or locked up to retain its shmurah status. In 2016 we were finally able to replace our wood and tin John Deere 45 with a much more modern 1982 Massey Fergusson 540. Not only does the “new” combine have a cab to protect me from the sun and dust, it also has much stronger parts, allowing it to harvest and pump out the grain without our having to resort to buckets and shovels. This machine, too, was a great deal. I found it in a tractor dealer’s private collection and was able to purchase it for just $4,500. In its first year out in the field, it cut nearly 10,000 pounds of wheat in just a few hours. Having the right equipment makes a huge difference in terms of labor and headaches. Whereas our first harvests required as many as twenty people to get the grain harvested, cleaned and dry, last year’s harvest required just two, plus the mashgiach. While we grow a lot of different things on the farm — from blueberries and horseradish to potatoes and hemp — it is the shmurah grain that I am the most proud of. The grains allow me to be busy with Pesach all year round and to witness and remember nissim year round as well. It just makes sense to me that a Yiddishe farmer would go out of his way to produce food that serves as one of the few edible mitzvos we have today. To date, thousands of pounds of our matzos have been consumed around the world. Come visit this summer to harvest some for yourself!

Liberated by Lists This yom tov of seder is so perfectly suited for lists, and it’s not that much of a coincidence. Lists have an element of freedom embedded in their makeup. They give us the liberty to put our minds at ease by letting go of all the information clamoring for our attention. Over the course of the coming week, as we will be finishing to prepare our homes for the long-anticipated yom tov, let’s embrace the spirit of the season with the joy it deserves. Sure, there will be some last-minute areas to finish up, but there is no need for the pressure to increase. We’ve been coasting along smoothly and will, b’ezras Hashem, get there without breaking a sweat. Before beginning this week’s tasks, let’s employ this wonderful tool and write a list of all that still needs to be done. Sunday March 29
We’ve got a full week ahead, but for the most part, our Pesach cleaning is done. Take a few minutes to revel in that awareness.
The official plan for Monday was to schedule it as “errands day.” I envisioned suggesting that on Sunday you lean back in your favorite chair and write your lists. But COVID-19 sure has given us a run for our money. With most of you wisely in quarantine and all “non-essential” brick-and-mortar stores shuttered for what will hopefully be a short while, we need to adapt. Thankfully, many stores are offering their ware by phone! So go ahead and grab that pen and notepad and let’s get to it. Review each family member’s complete wardrobes, and write your shopping list accordingly — but beyond the new shirts, socks, hosiery and cleaners pickup, remember to remember the most important member of the family: you. Also keep in mind Pesach kitchen necessities along with all of the accessories needed to complete your wardrobes. Complete your lists with the store names and phone numbers. Having info handy provides the impetus to get us moving. After your nutritious and energizing meal, we’ll do today’s task: Kitchen and dinette walls, as well as the woodworks around the room and light switches. Utilize the helpful tips and tools we’ve previously mentioned, like a Miracle mop for walls, the steam machine for woodworks, and Magic Erasers for just about any stubborn stain.
Monday
Let’s start the day by setting the timer and quickly polishing the front of the kitchen cabinets, the backsplash and the underside of the cabinets. Here, too, the Magic Eraser can be mighty magical on difficult kitchen stains. March 30
Now you’ll be heading back to your favorite chair (which is hopefully in a quiet spot) to complete your local “shopping” from the comfort of your home. You just might find the phone shopping a lot easier. There definitely are some benefits to the imposed isolation! Then designate twenty minutes to mending and ironing. And here’s the official reminder to iron your kittel.
Tuesday
As mentioned, we’ll recommend today for kashering and opening the Pesach kitchen. Prior to that, let’s finish up the kitchen area by polishing any windows, sills and blinds. If you haven’t yet, you might want to look at the baby’s high chair, too. March 31
Wednesday
Although it was mentioned six weeks ago, it is likely that coats, everyday suits and pants need to have their pockets and cuffs (re)checked. Employing a dry toothbrush and/or a vacuum cleaner, let’s tackle this task. April 1
And then we turn to our baggage. We’ve all got it: from carriage bags and diaper bags to purses and those too-long-unused, but not-yet-cleaned school bags… Some of you might also have work bags or frequently used trip bags. Involve any and all family members who are old enough to be responsible for their own, put some music on and let’s discover long-forgotten treasures.

WEEK 1
PESACH CLEANING
OF THE EIGHT-WEEK COUNTDOWN
Thursday
There are always certain things you’ll remember as you’re wrapping up, but some of them can definitely be done by now. (Of course, if you find the timing too soon, do put it on your little checklist and schedule another day for these tasks.) Some of these might be carriages, bikes and scooters, the stepladder, baby jumper, etc. April 2
Today’s also the day you’ll want to make the porch and patio furniture Pesach’dig. (The previous caveat still applies. If you’re going to use it for chometz into next week, just make sure to put it on a later list.)
Friday
Have helpful hands assist you with polishing all mirrors, doorknobs and shoes! Preparation is the key. Doing it today will alleviate some of the last-minute pressure. April 3
Let’s also look at the light switches and phones. These handsets involve your hands and face — I’m betting it’s been exposed to more chometz than you think. Let’s give it the proper cleaning it deserves!
Sunday April 5
Motzei Shabbos
With Pesach starting later in the week, many smart homemakers still spent Shabbos Hagadol in their own homes. If that’s the case for you, then Motzei Shabbos is the perfect time to wrap up with cleaning the table, chairs, stools, high chair and stovetop. April 4
Tip: While there’s still chometz around, prepare the ten “crumbs” for Bedikas Chometz in individual pieces of napkin — taped closed. Too often we first think about these ten crumbly bundles when our homes are already chometz-free. As always, my recommendation is to be prepared: Do it in advance. And don’t make the mistake of hiding the bundles out of sight or in a sealed cabinet lest they be forgotten over Pesach! Make sure to write down on your list where you’ll be storing them until Bedikas Chometz.

Marhaba (Welcome)! As far as the eye can see there is sand — tan-colored rockiness against the blue sky. Men dressed in long, white tunics and traditional Arab head coverings are out on their camels. Here, even the young children are experts at riding camels and other livestock. The women, in black clothes, tend to the agriculture, fetch water, and fashion the tents and clothes from the wool of the grazing sheep. Welcome to the world of the “badawi,” or desert-dweller! Scattered across Africa and the Middle East, Bedouin tribes maintain a unique existence. The Bedouin society has been called “a world without time.” Customarily, the Bedouin herds camels, goats and sheep. Their nomadic lifestyle stands in stark contrast to global The Bedouin’s cattle and camels are a prime source of livelihood, used progression. for meat, dairy products (the Bedouin diet consists primarily of dairy products) and wool. Culture, Customs, Characteristics
Herding
Raiding other tribes, caravans and settlements is so commonplace, it is officially known as ghazw in Arabic.
To celebrate their weddings and festive occasions, the Bedouins run camel races.
Hierarchy The Bedouin tribe is typically led by a Sheikh.
The nomadic Bedouin remains on the go, moving repeatedly when water gets scarce. It’s a harsh lifestyle that necessitates a high endurance level.
There are a number of clans in each tribe, and each clan is comprised of a few families. Most tribe members are descendants of a common ancestor.
Islam is the predominant Bedouin religion.
The resulting hierarchy of loyalties, based on proximity of male kinship, causes many power struggles between clans.

Legally Speaking Under the Ottoman Empire in the late 19th century, the Bedouins were perceived as a threat, and they were forced to join civilization. In most of the Middle East, Bedouin tribes have no land rights — just usage privileges. In Egypt, for example, the government sold much of the coastal area inhabited by the Bedouins to hoteliers to support the booming tourist industry. Egypt viewed the land as state property. Local governments in many Bedouin-populated countries wish to stabilize the Bedouin standard of living. They offer health care, schools and law enforcement to these nomadic tribes, but some refuse these services. Lobbying for Bedouin advancement is also sourced in ulterior motives: Governments want to seize the lands roamed and controlled by the tribes. In some places, entire developments were built, infrastructure and all, to encourage Bedouin settling. For example, Israel created the city of Rahat, which became the largest Bedouin settlement in the world.
The Bedouin Today
Burned by the Bisha’a
Are there still Bedouin nomads around?
Bedouin tribes honor a unique system of justice. Incarceration does not exist. Criminals are either fined for minor misconduct or condemned to capital punishment for serious offenses. One superstitious form of judgment is the Bisha’a ritual, which is used as a lie detector.
Over the years, many Bedouins transitioned to a more urban existence. Yet even as they dwell in cities, they adhere to the Bedouin culture and traditions. They often choose settlements near deserts or wilderness, and they visit the wild often. Camping in the desert continues — often during mild weather — and they still ride camels.
When there are no witnesses to corroborate a dispute, the accused is given a hot metal object — such as a ladle, spoon or rod — to lick. Then he rinses his tongue. If his tongue is scarred or burnt, it is considered proof that he lied!
The decision to settle more permanently usually stems from an urge to modernize and enjoy improved living standards and government policies, or to escape extreme climate conditions.
The Bisha’a is performed as a public ceremony, and tea is served. Women, who may not attend other judiciary trials, are allowed to be present.
For instance, a severe drought in Syria, which took place from 1958 to 1961, forced many Bedouins to look for employment in areas other than with cattle.
Officially, the suspect must agree to the test; however, social pressure will often force him to step up to the plate… er, spoon. A suspect who escapes before the ritual is considered guilty.
Today, there are roughly 4 million Bedouins all over the globe.
The Bisha’a is currently illegal in most countries.
