Letter to the Community Update on Maimonides Medical Center Visiting Policies Dear Friends, Greetings. Over the last two months, the need to physically isolate ourselves from one another has been one of many significant burdens inflicted by this pandemic on our community. In the context of healthcare, all hospitals in New York State have been operating under Department of Health guidelines that prohibit visiting of patients, with few exceptions. These measures have been necessary to protect patients and the public, but the inability to visit loved ones who are hospitalized has been a source of tremendous anguish for so many. The loss of family and friends at the bedside has removed something important to the process of healing. As we now work to adapt to the ongoing presence of COVID-19 in our society, I am pleased to let you know that Maimonides is among the first group of hospitals in the State selected by Governor Cuomo to participate in a pilot program through which an expanded visitation protocol will be evaluated. From May 26 through June 8, general visitation of patients in the Maimonides emergency room or inpatient areas will be allowed as follows, irrespective of whether the patient is being treated for COVID-19: • One visitor will be permitted at bedside, with up to two visitors per day per patient • Visitors will be provided with, and must wear, appropriate PPE • All visitors must consent to symptom and temperature checks • Visits are limited to four hours per day per patient • For patients on inpatient units, visitation hours are limited to the following times: o Sunday-Friday, 12pm-2pm and 6pm-8pm o Saturday, 12pm-2pm and 7pm-11pm These visiting policies for general patients are subject to change during the pilot period.

Please note that special visiting policies for the following units and situations remain in effect: • The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) • Labor & delivery / mother-baby units • Pediatric units • Imminent end of life circumstances • Patients for whom a support person is medically necessary. For the most of up to date version of all visiting policies, please visit www.mmcCovid.com. In concert with the new visiting policy, you will also notice a new electronic visitor management system at our main campus. Upon arrival, visitors will be asked to present photo identification and will be issued a printed pass with their photo on it that permits access for the duration of the visit. An alternate process for issuing visitor passes will be available for visitors requiring special accommodations. We hope that these measures to facilitate visitation in a safe manner will be among many such steps in the coming weeks that help our patients, families, and healthcare workers cope more effectively with COVID-19. Thank you for your support and partnership as we work together to heal and move our community forward during this challenging period.

Sincerely,

Kenneth D. Gibbs President & CEO

REB YAAKOV’S VORT (Re: Inspiration on the Parsha, Issue 35) Shalom u’bracha. I’d like to compliment the writer of the dvar Torah on Parshas Bamidbar. It was well written and given over very nicely. I just wanted to point out an incorrect attribution. It was Reb Yaakov Kamenetzky, zt”l, who said that vort 45 years ago, and not, lbcl”c, Reb Chaim Kanievksy, shlit”a. The names must have been confused. I would love to hear where the writer sourced this attribution. Thank you, and keep up the good work. Aryeh Schechter MALKA SCHNEPS RESPONDS: The source for its being Rav Kanievsky’s vort is the sefer Talelei Oros on Parshas Bamidbar, written by R’ Yissachar Dov Rubin.

Your article about edible flowers, which mentioned the author “popping some petals” into his mouth, left me horrified and sickened. After reading two more pages on how wonderful eating flowers is, I found a couple of sentences about checking for bugs and consulting a posek. Talk about burying the lead! The advice to consult a posek should have been in the opening paragraph, not hidden at the end. Statistics show that most people only read the first third or so of an article, and then skip to the next article. Those beautiful pictures entice people to emulate dangerous behavior and can cause thousands of innocent Yidden to violate halacha all in the name of a pretty plate. What would have been a wonderful and inspiring article is a kashrus nightmare waiting to happen. And how sad that when a mageifah gives us the time to stop and smell the flowers, some forget that those pretty flowers are also jam-packed with bugs. Please note that on occasion there are small containers of edible orchids found in one or two local supermarkets. These seem to be the only ones ever available locally. And if one looks closely at the packaging, they will note that the flowers are very rarely marked “checked,” and most often marked “unchecked.” Like raspberries and artichokes, in this writer’s opinion, flower-checking should be left to the experts. Chavie K.

A ONE-SIDED ISSUE (Re: Political Pulse, Issue 35) I really enjoy your politics column. You are often the only one to objectively analyze both sides of an issue. But sometimes an issue only has one side. The case of General Flynn is a matter of right and wrong. You write that Michael Flynn “lied to the FBI.” I am unsure of how you know this as a fact; an FBI agent actually wrote after interviewing Flynn

26 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / May 27, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

that it was apparent from Flynn’s body language that he was not lying. He later changed his views in order to prosecute Flynn. You also write that Flynn admitted to his crimes and pleaded guilty. The truth is that he didn’t; not at first. But then they threatened to put his kid in jail, so Flynn pleaded guilty to protect his son. Your article also makes no mention of the fact that he is now retracting his plea, since new documents have come to light. I can write pages about the injustice done to Flynn, a war hero who gave 30 years of his life to this country. But my point is simple: Honest reporting means reporting all facts. Framing this as a two-sided issue, as if both parties are equally wrong here, is a great disservice — and not just to truth, but to justice. Riki AVROHOM LEVI RESPONDS: Thank you for your feedback; it is most appreciated. I write that General Flynn lied to the FBI, because he seemingly does not contest that allegation. In the motion to withdraw the plea filed by Flynn’s lawyers, they argue that the government breached the plea agreement by recommending that Flynn receive jail time. The motion also claims that omissions regarding Turkey on Flynn’s FARA form were the fault of the lawyers who prepared the form, and not of Mr. Flynn. The argument in Mr. Flynn’s favor is not that he was truthful with the FBI, but rather that his lies were immaterial, as the FBI already had wiretapped evidence of his conversations with Kislyak. Writing for The Hill, Alan Dershowitz makes the point succinctly: “They are asking whether Flynn lied or the FBI acted improperly as if the answers to those two questions are mutually exclusive. The possibility that both are true, in that Flynn did not tell the truth and that the FBI acted improperly, is not considered in our hyperpartisan world, where everyone, including the media,

INBOX chooses a side and refuses to consider the chance that their side is not perfectly right and the other side not perfectly evil.” As for the point that you make regarding Flynn’s attempt to retract his plea: In the first paragraph of the in-depth analysis of the Flynn saga that appeared in the May 20th edition, it clearly states that “Flynn has attempted to withdraw his guilty plea on the basis that he was deliberately set up by the FBI.” I imagine that your criticism is in reference to the brief summary that appeared on May 13, which did not mention Flynn’s attempt to withdraw his plea. I apologize for that omission.

RE: SIMCHOS OF THE FUTURE (Inbox, Issue 35) R.K.’s letter last week about changing our chasunah standards was true to its point and surely voiced the opinion of many others. However, calling upon the masses to “start lowering the standards” and implement the drastic changes that many people are now suggesting, like celebrating chasunos in homes, giving fake jewelry, etc., are is highly unrealistic and will b’derech hateva not materialize. (I wouldn’t mind if it does, but turning a blind eye and being unrealistic doesn’t do any good.) Instead, each individual should make their own subtle changes and minor spending reductions, little by little, without being worried about how it will be perceived by others. Each person and family has their unique priorities and feelings about what is doable for them and what is not. We cannot make rigid rules across the board, and we definitely cannot jump from level thousand to level ten in one day — “Tafastah merubah lo tafastah.” Small changes here and there can go a long way in eventually transforming our mindsets and encouraging each family to do what works for them and their budget. So many years have gone by with people hoping and wishing for that big reform that never came; instead they watch as standards keep climbing higher and higher. I call upon my fellow Brooklynites and fellow Yidden all over to start making bite-size changes on their own, with their own good intentions, and watch the trickle-down effect play itself in action. It’s inevitable. A Community Member

RE: AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE TELEPHONE (Inbox, Issue 34) Dear Teacher, You are right. I stand corrected. While my intention

28 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / May 27, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

was merely to introduce the week’s installment with some humor, considering the tremendous efforts our teachers invest in teaching our children, I admit it may have been hurtful, and I apologize. Regarding your protest about my comment that “teachers do not need to teach right now while simultaneously rocking a stroller… and stuffing egg salad…” allow me to point out that the words “right now” were not in the original column. I was comparing between a teacher in a classroom, and a mother trying to entertain kids of multiple ages at home (in our case — from age two to seventeen). I still maintain that that is a gap that is not found in the standard classroom, though making that point should not have made it sound like the teachers have it “easy.” We all know how far from the truth that is! As I said, I do apologize for using humor that may have seemed disrespectful to our wonderful teachers’ work, and at the same time I will fervently agree with your description of the hard work that teachers have to put in now, in addition to going through what the rest of us are going through. I know, because my own husband is a teacher. In his school, there are no conference calls. The teachers leave a recorded lesson, then a recorded test, the children then leave recorded answers, then recorded comments and questions… It goes on and on and on, and can get overwhelming to the point of being impossible. I am fully with you on the huge applause that our special teachers all deserve. And I will add that it’s a good thing that the teachers’ main s’char comes from Shamayim, because no amount of human gratitude can truly repay them for their devotion. Riki Schreiber

at various parks and lakes, children were seen running up and down the playground equipment, though they was clearly roped off with caution tape and large posters were displayed in Yiddish and English forbidding their use due to COVID-19. Because we are bnei melachim, we have a huge responsibility to behave in that manner wherever we go. When a non-Jew is seen using the playground illegally, it generally doesn’t make waves. However, when a Yid is seen using the playground illegally, a person may stop, take a picture, and post it, and it can then go viral and cause an endless chillul Hashem. We do not, chas v’shalom, want to be the cause of that. So, go ahead, and take your bikes, scooters, rollerblades, hoverboards, or just take a stroll around the park. But all in the right manner and frame of mind, and while following all guidelines. Hatzlacha and enjoy the outdoors! A Mother

I’d like to share a thought about the current situation. Hakadosh Baruch Hu has sent us a very strong wake-up call, and it’s time to reevaluate our position in this world and to remember that we are here as in a vestibule to prepare for the great banquet hall of Olam Haba. Every person knows in which area he needs to improve, and hopefully these issues are being addressed individually. There is one communal area, though, where we can all do better and that has, baruch Hashem, finally become more relevant. By this I mean the halachos of kedushas beis haknesses u’beis midrash, which is an extension of the mitzvah of morah mikdash. There are specific halachos in Shulchan Aruch, Orech Chaim (siman 151), which we have to learn and be mekayim l’maaseh. But to make it meaningful, lasting and to master it fully, we can try this easy yet quite effective hachanah: As we head to shul, or to beis midrash to learn, we should think for a moment, “I am going into a makom kadosh.” And when entering we should think, “I am entering the House of Hashem!” This small conscious hachanah will instill a subconscious awareness and a subliminal feeling of the chashuvas and kedushas hamakom. The more that one is ragil to make this hachanah, the more the awareness becomes an integral part of him, and as time goes by, he will find that the halachos of kavod beis haknesses are ingrained within him and easy to be mekayim. Haba l’taheir mesayin oso. Y.M. PA RS H A S N A SS O The girls in the first grade class at Torah Academy were completing a worksheet when there was a knock on the classroom door. The girls looked up to see their principal in the doorway, and they stood up in respect. “Mrs. Levine, would it be okay if I spoke with the class privately for a moment? the principal asked the teacher. “Absolutely, Mrs. Levine answered. “I’ll wait in the hallway. After Mrs. Levine left the classroom, the principal addressed the girls. “You have had a wonderful year of growth and learning, and you have much to be thankful for. Soon the year will end and you will leave for summer vacation, and next year you will have a new teacher. I am sure that you would all like to thank Mrs. Levine for all she has taught you this year. The girls nodded their heads

and waited to hear more. “I have printed out a coloring sheet with a pre-printed thank-you note and a cheerful picture. Each of you is to take the coloring sheet home and color it in nicely. I will collect them from you tomorrow at this time, and at the end-of-year assembly, we will present them to your teacher.â€? The principal handed out the thank-you notes, and each girl packed it away in her briefcase, colored it at home, and returned it to the principal as directed. At the end-of-year assembly, Mrs. Levine was surprised and delighted to receive the stack of thank-you notes from her class. When she returned home that evening, she read through each one. The notes all featured the exact same pictures and the exact same words, but each one was colored differently. Some girls underlined certain words that had more meaning for them, while other girls highlighted different words. Some girls spent more time coloring certain parts of the picture, while others emphasized other parts of the picture. One girl in particular, who was very close to the teacher, spent a very long time working on hers, highlighting each letter in the note with a different color crayon, and really turning her picture into a masterpiece. The girls all gave what appeared to be the same exact thank-you note, but in reality, each note was as unique as the girl who colored it. Parshas Nasso describes the opening of the newly erected Mishkan. The nasi of each shevet brought the first korbanos to the Mishkan, one nasi per day. On the first day, Nachshon ben Aminadav from Shevet Yehudah came: “V’korbano ka’aras kesef achas shloshim umei’ah mishkalah‌ — And his offering was one silver bowl weighing 130 shekels, one silver basin of 70 shekels‌â€? the Torah uses 53 words to describe the korbanos that Nachshon ben Aminadav brought to the Mishkan. On each of the next eleven days, each nasi brings the exact same korbanos as Nachshon ben Aminadav, and the Torah repeats the list in the same detail. The Torah, which never wastes a single word, uses the same 53 words to describe the identical korbanos of each nasi, for a total of twelve times. Why would the Torah write out the same exact list twelve times, rather than simply writing the list once, saying that each of the nesiyim brought these korbanos on each of the first twelve days? The Midrash explains that although it might appear as though the nesiyim all brought the same korbanos since the list of korbanos was the same, in reality, each nasi had a different kavanah (Bamidbar Rabbah 13:14). Because each nasi had a unique kavanah when bringing his korbanos, his korbanos were unique. Similarly, we all daven the same exact tefillos every day. We all say Shema, and we all daven Shemoneh Esrei. In reality, each one of us has unique kavanos, so our tefillos are unique. The girls in the story above all colored the same picture for their teacher, but each girl emphasized a different aspect, according to her feelings and her relationship with the teacher. Likewise, each of us brings a unique dimension to the tefillos we daven. Our tefillos are all unique and are all needed. Whether we are davening with the tzibbur or alone at home, our tefillos and those of other people truly count, and each is precious in Hashem’s eyes.

Numerous Restrictions in Place as Cuomo Allows Limited Minyanim After weeks of being officially shuttered by New York State, shuls are allowed to open their doors once again under a plan announced by Governor Andrew Cuomo that includes a lengthy list of limitations. “At this time of stress and when people are so anxious and so confused, I think those religious ceremonies can be very comforting,” said Cuomo. “But we need to find out how to do it, and do it safely, and do it smartly. The last thing we want to do is have a religious ceremony that winds up having more people infected.” Under the new guidelines, people are permitted to daven indoors, with minyanim restricted to a maximum of ten people in each building. A shul that has multiple buildings could have ten people in each one, as long as each building has its own entrance and exit. Anyone touching a shared object in shul, such as a sefer Torah, is required to wear gloves, and congregants who do not live in the same household must remain six feet apart from each other at all times. That distance would be doubled to twelve feet during any singing, a provision that is likely linked to a Centers for Disease Control report on a Washington choir practice attended by 61 individuals that resulted in 52 cases of coronavirus, two of which proved to be fatal. According to The New York Times, because people project their voices at a loud volume when they sing, they are more likely to emit virus-carrying droplets into the air. “When you project your voice, you can project more virus,” said the local county health officer, Dr. Howard Leibrand, commenting on the incident in the beginning of May. “So, it seems like this would be a pretty good indicator we shouldn’t be going back to large groups singing in an enclosed space … because that would be the same sort of situation as this.”

38 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / May 27, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

The guidelines also recommend leaving doors and windows open to ensure adequate ventilation. People are also encouraged to bring their own siddurim and chumashim to shul to avoid touching communal seforim as another way to prevent the spread of the virus.

On the Verge of Financial Ruin, Small Businesses Call on Cuomo to Ease Restrictions Frustrated by weeks of closures, small business owners have banded together to protest the inequities that have prevented them from earning a living while large stores have been allowed to remain open under state guidelines. The coalition, titled Reopen NY, held a press conference in Lower Manhattan last week, calling on Governor Andrew Cuomo to allow them to open shop and save their businesses from collapse. The group pledged to operate their businesses safely by limiting foot traffic, following social distancing protocols for employees and patrons, and providing hand sanitizer and gloves for customers if necessary. A statement released by Reopen NY on May 20, signed by 289 businesses owners, said that while they understood the need to temporarily close down to help New York flatten the coronavirus curve, the extended shutdown has had devastating financial repercussions for them, their employees and others. “We are talking about a basic, fundamental human right,” said attorney Ron Coleman, who represents Reopen New York. “Everyone is entitled to make a living.” Numerous small businesses opened their doors on May 24, in defiance of the standing orders, to demonstrate the need for their services, reported Hamodia. Many displayed Reopen New York signs in their windows, but things

turned ugly as police responded to reports throughout the city of illegally opened stores and proceeded to shut them down. “The large corporate department stores like Target and Walmart, while being allowed to open to sell food, sanitizing supplies and the like, are also permitted to sell toys, clothing and a whole host of other items,” said one customer waiting on line to enter a store. “As a resident of the community, we want to show our solidarity with our local shops.” One particularly small business was slapped with a summons on Friday, with Yeshiva World News reporting that a group of children selling lemonade and popcorn on a Williamsburg sidewalk were shut down by the NYPD. The father of one of the children was charged with running a social gathering and ordered to appear in court in September. With the Hudson Valley approved to enter phase 1 of New York’s reopening plan last week, New York City and Long Island remain the last two of the state’s ten regions to remain completely closed down. Cuomo has made reopening a gradual process in each region, with Albany monitoring the outcome of each phase for two weeks before allowing any area to proceed to the second phase, which will open up professional services, retail stores, barbershops, hair and nail salons, administrative support and real estate. Restaurants, food service businesses and hotels are part of the third stage of the governor’s plan, with entertainment, recreation and schools included in the fourth and final phase. Doubt continues to swirl on whether camps will open this summer or schools will start on time in September. Hoping to impress upon the governor the need to get schools up and running again as quickly as possible, Senator Simcha Felder sent a letter to Cuomo asking him to bump schools up to the first phase of his plan, explaining that remote learning is ineffective for the many private school families who do not use online learning platforms. Felder also noted that while students are struggling, the special education population is facing “catastrophic, life-altering repercussions,” because remote learning does not meet their educational needs. “New York’s students are our future and if we continue to delay their education, it will be at great financial and societal expense,” wrote Felder. “With the recently released guidance from the CDC on the procedures for [the safe] reopening of schools, it is time to move education into phase 1. When the experts determine we can enter phase 1 with proper health protocols in place, education must be at the forefront, not at the end.” Cuomo continued to emphasize the importance of masks and social distancing as the state’s regions continue reopening, noting that safety measures are important to prevent the further transmission of the virus. “Don’t underestimate this virus,” said Cuomo. “We know that it can rear its ugly head at any moment. But

what do we need to do? It’s not rocket science. Wear a mask. Wash your hands. Social distance. Use hand sanitizer. But most of all, wear a mask.”

Hospital Visitors Allowed Under New Pilot Program A concerted effort to lobby Albany to lift its restrictions on hospital visitation has paid off, with Governor Andrew Cuomo announcing a two-week pilot program that will run through June 9. Hamodia reported that elected officials at the city, state and local levels lobbied Albany to reverse the ban that had

kept nearly all visitors out of hospitals — and to allow volunteers who tested positive for coronavirus antibodies to stay with patients. Volunteers would serve as patient advocates and communicate with their family members, easing the burden on overworked hospital staff and providing relief to patients and their loved ones. The pilot program would have screened visitors clad in personal protective equipment staying with patients for a predetermined amount of time. It is being implemented in Maimonides Medical Center, Coney Island Hospital, Westchester Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Lenox Hill Hospital, New York Presbyterian, NYU Langone Orthopedic, Hospital for Special Surgery, Jacobi Medical Center, Montefiore, Interfaith Medical Center, Richmond University Medical Center, Mt. Sinai Hospital in both Manhattan and Queens, two Long Island hospitals and four upstate hospitals. Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein said that he is hopeful that the program can be further expanded. “These last two months have been heartbreaking,” said Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein. “I have heard far too many tragic stories of patients who were forced to spend their last days alone at the hospital without a family member or caregiver to advocate for their basic needs.”

Recap: Blumi decides to wait for the mystery bachur, to whom she’d given the yad, to contact her about it, rather than embarrass herself by asking her brothers who he was. Binyamin is filled with anxiety over the missing envelope, since he had been trusted to hold on to it. It was Motzei Shabbos. Tzippy packed up their things while Peretz’s mother busied herself in the kitchen filling containers for them. “I don’t have you over every Shabbos,” she’d said after Havdalah, “so when you do come, I like to give you the leftover food.” Out of the corner of her eye, Tzippy saw her placing chicken, meat, soup and fish into containers. She didn’t especially like any one of these foods. She wasn’t used to the sharp taste of the Hungarian type of soup, and certainly not to the fish that was generously spiced with black and white pepper. The chicken and meat were decent, though nothing more than that. But who cared? They had enough food here for a whole week! Peretz came to help her pack up. After all, he was an expert at packing, what with all of his years away at yeshivah. “My mother just gave me 100 shekels,” he reported. “So tell her thank you when we leave, okay?” “Sure,” she replied. Interestingly, her mother had given them 200 shekels two weeks ago, and told them that they couldn’t always help out, but when they could, they were so happy to, especially because she was still in school and couldn’t look for a serious job yet.

Tzippy wasn’t going to start comparing, and they certainly had no right to complain, but when she looked at the two families and saw the differences in their means, and the standards of their daily fare, she did feel some resentment. Couldn’t Peretz’s mother spare them a bit more than 100 shekels? She hadn’t spent anything on the wedding. And they knew how to spend; that had been evident throughout the wedding preparations. What had happened? Peretz’s mother was generous only when it was on Korman’s account, but not when it came to her personal wallet? Tzippy blushed. She bent down to fiddle with the zipper on the suitcase so Peretz wouldn’t notice the flush on her cheeks. Shame, shame, shame. Her parents would be mortified if they knew the nature of her thoughts. You’d think that she had been raised in a home where there was always an abundance of what they needed. Mommy always tried, and there was good food. But when tomatoes and peppers were too expensive, they didn’t buy them, and sufficed with cucumbers or radishes or whatever was cheap. She didn’t remember that bothering her as a girl. Now, though, it suddenly did. She

wanted more! Sometimes she felt like ambling down the grocery aisles and just buying whatever she wanted. Had the wedding preparations habituated her to a higher standard, by which she expected to live for the rest of her life? Or had she become used to receiving, and that’s why such demanding thoughts dared creep into her mind? If Mommy would know that she had called the lawyer to ask for help from Mr. Korman… She hadn’t even told Peretz. She couldn’t bring herself to do it. What had happened to her? Had she developed this tendency to beg in just three short months? Where was her self-respect? The feeling of shame quickly overpowered the resentment she’d felt just a few minutes earlier; the latter now bowed its head like an obedient child and didn’t raise it at all again when she parted from Peretz’s parents. She made sure to thank her in-laws warmly for the money they’d given them. After all, she could take that 100-shekel bill to the grocery and choose plenty of fruits and vegetables and a few other items that she would normally never allow herself to even look at. How much did yellow cheese cost? She could prepare little pizza wheels for Peretz for supper, the ones that Avigail Auerbach — what was her name now? — had been telling her about when they’d met last week at the grocery. It had been a strange encounter, indeed. It was almost her turn to pay, and she had put down bread, milk, four lebens, three onions, six potatoes and a package of wafers at the register. Avigail, right behind her, had been pushing a cart piled to the top, and Tzippy had been embarrassed to even look at it. But a quick glance let her know that there was a box of cereal, a package of chocolate puddings, a bottle of chocolate milk and a triple pack of frozen pizza in there, among other things. And Avigail had envied her! “These pizzas are really great,” she’d said, “but I always add yellow cheese to them. When I have time to prepare little pizza wheels myself, from flaky dough, it’s even better, though flaky dough probably isn’t the best choice either.... A different dough would probably be best, but I don’t have a mixer, and I have no patience to start kneading dough by hand. You probably have a great mixer.” “Right,” Tzippy affirmed. A mixer that swung up with a whoosh on its special shelf and didn’t even have to be plugged in because it remained permanently plugged into the outlet designated for it in the cabinet. “My mother-in-law bought me a Magimix food processor for the engagement instead of a flower arrangement, which is such a waste. That’s also very useful, but I’d prefer a mixer…” Avigail had sighed. “I would try and save up for something good, but with our mortgage, it’s not possible right now. I thought of buying some tickets in a Chinese auction; who knows? Maybe I’ll win a mixer there, and even if I

don’t win, the money will be from ma’aser, which we give anyway.” Then Tzippy asked if she worked; Avigail answered that she did, in the afternoons, as a substitute for a secretary in a cheder. With a shy smile, Tzippy had asked if they needed a graphic designer, and Avigail had responded that if she’d hear about something, she’d try to recommend her. They’d chatted for a bit longer about model lessons that were coming up, and then they’d parted. Tzippy felt a sour taste in her mouth. She envied Avigail for her job and for the kollel her husband was in, which paid every month, on time. She, Tzippy, was left without work, and Peretz’s kollel had not paid them even once yet, even though he’d been there for almost two months so far. And Avigail envied her. For her apartment, its size, furniture and location. And Miri was also jealous. B’ezras Hashem, they would manage. They had money from wedding gifts, which was what they were living off for now. Hopefully she would find work, and Peretz’s kollel would eventually pay. But in the meantime… Maybe she should put fifty shekels of this money from her in-laws aside, and start saving a bit? Tzippy stared out of the bus window. It was hard to believe how heavy life could feel, and she’d only just started out.

of hopes on it. If the U’shemartem Chinese auction organizers hadn’t called last night, then she probably hadn’t won anything — not a mixer, not kitchen cabinets, and not the electric screwdriver for her husband. But maybe they had tried her late, after they’d already turned off the phone for the night? She tossed the spoon she’d used to stir the rice into the sink, wiped her hands, and studied the kitchen. Yes, it looked neat and clean. It wasn’t easy to be a homemaker when you were busy in school, taking tests, preparing model lessons, and working, but she tried very hard not to neglect any of her obligations. Her husband would be home soon, and he’d find a clean kitchen smelling of good food for lunch. Avigail sat down at the table

apartment as one of its prizes, then it surely had enough money for repeated advertisements. She scanned the ads quickly, seeking out prize number sixtyone. A mixer. Ugh. But it was to be expected. In fact, had she seen the name “Avigail Lev, Bnei Brak” on the page, she probably would have been stunned. She didn’t know anyone who had ever won a prize in one of these huge Chinese auctions. Actually, their neighbors had once won an expensive doll carriage, but that was a much smaller campaign than this. It had been a high school auction, or something like that. Avigail wondered if she knew any of the winners this time. She went back to the beginning of the spread — and suddenly stopped, gaping at the blue letters announcing the winner of the grand prize. And after two whole minutes of her sitting in this exact position, her husband came home and found her there — along with the odor of burned rice. “Hello, Avigail!” he called out, as he put his hat down on the plastic chair near the kitchen door. “Hello!” he repeated. “I don’t believe it…” was her response. “What, that it’s lunchtime already?” he joked, and turned toward the oven to figure out where the scorched smell was coming from. “I don’t believe this.” Avigail was still staring, dumbfounded, at the paper. “You don’t believe what it says? I’m happy to check whether I see the same thing!” He turned the gas off under the rice and came over to the table. “Here, I’ll read it: Furnished penthouse apartment, eight rooms: Eliyahu and Elisheva Potolsky, Bnei Brak.”

She wanted more! Sometimes she felt like ambling down the grocery aisles and just buying whatever she wanted.

***** Avigail Lev, nee Auerbach, returned from seminary to her cozy little apartment and her kitchenware. The morning’s paper was resting on a chair, but she didn’t touch it. First she had to set the table and warm up the food. When all that would be ready, she would finally be able to look at the page that interested her so much. Not that she was pinning lots

and opened the newspaper, leafing through the pages. So, had she won a mixer or not? How did everyone say it? “I’m not the winning type.” But someone had to win that mixer and the set of pots that came along with it. So maybe it was her? Where was that page? U’shemartem was supposed to publish the names of the winners today, weren’t they? Yes. Here it was, on the last two pages: a huge spread with the familiar logo, and photos of all the prizes that had been advertised so heavily over the past few weeks. The American organization had distributed an unbelievable amount of picket signs, newspaper ads, booklets and other publicity materials to get people to buy tickets for this Chinese auction. If U’shemartem had enough money to include a furnished penthouse

Vote-by-Mail Sets Off a Partisan Divide THE PULSE: Michigan, Nevada and California recently

announced that all voters in their states would receive applications to request a vote-by-mail ballot. Numerous states currently allow mail-in voting, but many require that the voter provide a reason for not voting in person. The logic behind the relaxation of the vote-by-mail requirements is that it will help stop the spread of COVID-19 by alleviating crowds at polling places. It will also allow voters who are fearful of contracting COVID-19 to vote from the safety of their homes. However, President Trump is vehemently opposed to expanded vote-bymail procedures. He fears that voting by mail is subject to fraud and has threatened to cut federal funding to

50 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / May 27, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

Michigan and Nevada over their plans to mail ballots to voters who request them. The California GOP has sued California Governor Gavin Newsom over his vote-bymail directive and is seeking to get a court to overturn it. Elections fall under the jurisdiction of each state, and the federal government has limited leverage on the matter. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak angrily hit back over the threatened cut to funding and said, “For the president to threaten federal funding in the midst of a pandemic over a state exercising its authority to run elections in a safe and legal manner is inappropriate and outrageous. THE IMPACT: There have been some limited cases of voter fraud associated with mail-in ballots. The most notable example was a 2018 congressional election in North Carolina’s 9th district. A court overturned a Republican

congressional victory due to illegal ballot harvesting. However, extensive studies have shown that mail-in ballot fraud is not widespread and that it does not tend to favor one party over the other. Proponents of mail-in voting believe that they can overcome any shortcomings in the system. One of the main concerns is ballot harvesting. Political operatives are allowed to collect multiple ballots and return them to a polling station on behalf of voters. A simple remedy to this flaw can be to outlaw the ballot’s return to the polling station or post office mailbox by a person other than the voter himself. There are concerns regarding ballots that are returned late and do not get counted. Problems also arise when ballots are submitted unsigned or when signatures on the ballot do not match the signature on file with the board of elections. Disqualification of such ballots can lead to prolonged political wrangling and questionable election outcomes. The supporters of voting by mail argue that the benefits outweigh the risks and point out that Trump himself voted by mail in the recent Florida Republican primary.

Republicans Notch Two Congressional Election Victories THE PULSE: Republicans won two special elections

held for open congressional seats. Republican Tom Tiffany scored a comfortable victory in the reliably red 7th district of Wisconsin. The newsworthy event was that Republican Mike Garcia won a congressional seat in California’s 25th district that had previously been held by a Democrat. It is the first time in over 20 years that Republicans have flipped a congressional seat in California. THE IMPACT: Mike Garcia is a former Navy pilot who received strong support and backing from President Trump. Republicans are hailing his election victory as a sign of strength and are hoping that it portends to future congressional victories in November. Historically, special elections are a less-than-accurate indicator of future voting results, as turnout in these elections is usually significantly below average. The vote in California was also based almost entirely on mail-in ballots (see above). In any case, these victories are good news for Republicans and will serve to boost the morale of Republican candidates in tight races across the country.

Biden Lambasted for Remarks on Black Voters THE PULSE: During an interview with the popular “Breakfast Club” radio program, Joe Biden responded to a question from the host of the show by saying that “If

you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.” Biden received backlash for his comments, which were racially insensitive and appeared to take the black vote for granted. Biden apologized and said that his comments were “much too cavalier” and acknowledged that “the comments have come off like I was taking the African American vote for granted” but that “nothing could be further [from] the truth.” THE IMPACT: African American voters powered

Biden’s historic primary comeback against Bernie Sanders. Many of them view Biden as an ally who has historically supported the needs of the African American community. The fact that he served as the vice president to the first African American president is seen as a plus among black voters. It is essential that Biden retains the support of this constituency and not alienate them with comments that are perceived as demeaning and unappreciative. Biden’s quick apology will help to assuage his supporters’ concerns, but he will need to be more sensitive and aware going forward.

GOP Rep Calls on Trump to Stop Creating Paranoia THE PULSE: Donald Trump has lashed out at political

opponents and accused them of all types of unsubstantiated crimes. He insisted that former President Barack Obama and former VP Joe Biden are guilty of criminal acts. Last week Attorney General William Barr publicly stated that he does not expect “a criminal investigation of either man,” but that has not stopped Trump from accusing them of “the biggest political crime and scandal in the history of the USA.” Trump has also claimed that Obama administration officials are deserving of prison terms of “at least 50 years.” Trump has also lashed out at reporters such as CNN’s Jake Tapper and accused them of illegal activities. One of the most egregious attacks that Trump has leveled is against MSNBC host and former Republican Representative Joe Scarborough. Trump has insinuated that Scarborough is responsible for the death of an office intern who was found dead in Scarborough’s Florida office in 2001. The death of the intern has been investigated and determined to be accidental, but Trump has continued to propagate the theory that Scarborough committed murder. THE IMPACT: On Sunday, Representative Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) called on Trump to stop with his accusations. In response to the Scarborough accusation, he said it is a “completely unfounded conspiracy. Just stop. Stop spreading it, stop creating paranoia. It will destroy us.” Kinzinger is attempting to make a point. Democracy depends on voters having a precise grasp of reality, and distortions of truth will destroy the country’s foundation.

The soprano song of a single swallow tickled Chananel’s ear, gently pulling him back from soaring on High. As he opened his eyes, other birds joined the choir, greeting the dawn with praise for their Creator. Straightening up, Chananel noticed gentle rays streaming in through the open door. Avigael. Why had she left the house so early? Quietly washing, Chananel tiptoed past where Noam was sleeping, afraid to waken the slumbering babe. “I see that you have woken the sun this morning, rather than the sun waking you.” He spoke to Avigael’s back, her not having noticed his approach. She quickly stood and turned, a treasure cradled in her arms. “Chananel, look! I’ve attached dried pomegranates to our basket. Isn’t it beautiful?” Examining the tiny red ornaments, Chananel praised the work of her hands. The willow reed basket had kept Avigael busy over the course of many days as she’d dried and stripped the branches he’d 72 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / May 27, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

harvested and lovingly weaved them together. It was a simple basket, full of heart. And now it was ready — and so was he. From the time he’d found the first budding olive, wrapped a thin reed around it to signify its sanctity as a first fruit, and whispered “harei elu bikkurim,” Chananel had been dreaming of this day. Today he would clip his ripened fruit and begin his journey toward the Beis Hamikdash.

The trip from Gush Chalav to Meron passed quickly, as Chananel allowed himself to relive the memories of the previous year. The sights, the sounds — the utter sanctity; mere words failed to capture the essence of the bringing of bikkurim. With mounting anticipation, Chananel eagerly looked forward to the moment he’d once again hand over the best of his land. Not that he had much. Being orphaned of both parents

from a young age had given him a difficult start in life. But in the blessed way of Am Yisroel, the community had stepped in and cared for him until maturity, when they’d married him to a yesomah of fine character. Wealthy neighbors who’d watched him grow up had gifted him a small plot of land with scarcely a minyan of olive trees. It wasn’t much, but it was enough — nay, it was more than enough! It was his. And for that he was thankful. With Avigael and Noam staying in her cousin’s home while he was away, Chananel was able to be fully in the moment, savoring each step he took in the colorful sandals he’d crafted especially for this journey. As he walked, he spoke to Hashem in his own words, thanking him for such a blessed life. Soon Meron was in sight, and clearly there was action in the center of town. Throngs of people from surrounding hamlets and Meron proper had gathered together, some with donkeys carrying bulging bags of goods and others with simple packs on their backs, like Chananel, who’d be making the trip by foot. Coming closer, the sounds of chatter drifted through the air as friends old and new greeted one another and prepared to travel together. The sweetness of the mitzvah permeated the streets, so tangible he could almost taste it on his

tongue. Nodding at his fellow travelers by way of greeting, Chananel spread out blankets and prepared to settle down for the night. A young boy stuck his head out of a nearby doorway and asked him his name, revealing his own for good measure. “We’d invite you to sleep in our home,” he said, the gap between his teeth playing up his boyish charm, “but Father says it isn’t allowed.” “Your father is a learned man,” Chananel said with a smile. “Those who bring bikkurim sleep only in the city streets for fear of becoming tamei should there be a mes found within a house.” Chananel tousled the lad’s hair. “But your desire to be machnas orach is surely appreciated both here and There,” he said, pointing toward the Heavens. The young boy grinned and scampered off, leaving Chananel to rest up for the days of walking ahead. When morning dawned, those who’d slumbered in the streets roused themselves with vigor, as the waking call of “Kumu v’naaleh Tzion el Hashem Elokeinu!” rang out. Soon they were on their way, a flute-player gaily leading the procession with heart-lifting, feet-lifting music. As one, the pilgrims sang in jubilation, “Samachti b’omrim li beis Hashem nelech!” Throughout the day they journeyed, Chananel conversing and singing with people he knew from back home and those he’d only just met. It was a conglomeration of Yidden; young and old, rich and poor, unlearned and wise. Together they created a beautiful tapestry of Hash-

em’s nation, a living work of singing, fragrant, colorful art. Even the ox that walked in front of the moving mass of people was pleasant to behold, its horns gilded in gold, an olive branch crown upon its head. For two-thirds of the day they traveled, stopping early to allow others who’d just learned of the passing caravan time to gather their bikkurim and join them. Despite the hours on his feet, Chananel remained energetic; he could easily walk through the night! But he didn’t begrudge the newcomers the wait, knowing that every person would add to the glory of the King by coming as one of a multitude. The rest of the day was spent in camaraderie, with food, learning and conversation shared amongst the crowd. “How long will it take us to arrive?” a first-year bearer of bikkurim asked that evening to a group of men who’d gathered in a circle. “Should be about five days, b’ezras Hashem,” an older, welltraveled man answered, “if we make haste... We’ll have to extend our route, bypassing the Kutim. They’re acting up again, harassing pilgrims. Best to avoid the Shomron and risk running into them.” Many of the men nodded knowingly as the speaker described the path they’d take to avoid the area around Har Gerizim where the trouble-making Kutim were settled. They’d all grown up hearing how the Kutim, pseudo-Jews, had tried to thwart the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash, claiming that Har Gerizim was the true Har HaBayis. Due to the Kutim’s meddlesome efforts, the construction of Beis Sheini had been delayed eighteen years. Even now they remained a thorn in the side of the Yidden. “We’ll have to follow the Yam Ginosar down, and then head through Yericho before we turn inward to Yerushalayim, even though it will add an additional two days to our journey.” As Chananel drifted off to sleep that night, the faces of Avigael and

Noam flitted through his mind. For them, every extra step was worth it. Better to be safe than to expose oneself to danger. * * * At the end of the final full day of travel, the very air resonated with an unseen energy. A thread of excitement weaved its way through the camp. Soon, soon they would be there. The olim had come so far, and now, just outside of Yerushalayim, they’d stopped to prepare their bikkurim. A runner had gone ahead to announce their arrival early the next morn to prepare the inhabitants of the Holy City to greet them with great fanfare. All around Chananel, the people he’d traveled with were pulling bags off of donkeys or slipping them from their own shoulders, lovingly emptying the contents for which they’d traveled so far. Figs, dates, pomegranates, grapes, sheaves of wheat and barley… Some had only one species, others had two or more. Those who hailed from the Galil, like Chananel, had sacks of olives, considered the most valuable of the sheva minim. The oil they produced fetched greater prices than wine, and for this reason, many of his neighbors were wealthy. Their baskets were quite unlike his simple reed one; theirs were overlain with silver and gold, some of their baskets large enough to hold vast quantities of bikkurim. Even though Chananel was bringing one-sixtieth of his crop, as per the sages’ ordinance, his bringings fit well enough into a mediumsized basket. For a while he fussed over the presentation, moving the justripe olives this way and that, until he was finally satisfied with the display. Contentedly, Chananel settled back to watch those who weren’t yet finished. Those who’d come with multiple minim were either dividing them into separate baskets or layering them, one species at a time, inside a single basket. The grains were on the bottom, the fruits on the top, and

between each species was a layer of leaves or grass. Those who had traveled from far away or had waited for their various crops to ripen in order to bring everything at once had dried figs and raisins instead of fresh figs and grapes. No matter what each basket carried or how it was presented, the basket owners all felt the same warm feelings of gratitude to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for blessing them with such bounty. On the morrow, they’d be able to express those feelings through the offering of their first fruits in the Beis Hamikdash. * * * Throngs of people gathered in the streets leading to Yerushalayim, the dwellers of the city eager to greet the bearers of bikkurim. Artisans and officials alike stood together in reverence for those coming to perform the great mitzvah of the bringing of first fruits. Seeing the heartwarming reception before him, Chananel’s spirits ran high. Though a simple man, a farmer of but a few trees, he felt that he was someone worthy of great respect by virtue of this mitzvah. One by one the olim poured into the city, and when all of the travelers had entered the gates of Yerushalayim, the flute-player began a new melody. As one, they opened their mouths to sing: “Omdos hayu ragleinu bisharayich Yerushalayim!” As they wound their way through

76 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / May 27, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

the streets of Yerushalayim toward Har HaBayis, Chananel saw little children clapping their pudgy little hands in delight, their mothers peeking through the doorways at the festivities. All along the streets, workers and shopsmen stopped what they were doing and greeted them: “Acheinu, our brothers, you have come in peace!” When the group came near to Har HaBayis, they paused to finish their preparations. Though many pilgrims had brought everything they needed, others had last-minute purchases to make. Chananel was of the latter group; he’d had no desire to tend to pigeons along the trail! He inched his way along, sliding in and out of the crowd to examine the stalls that dotted the streets. Some vendors were selling animals for korbanos and others sold ornamental fruits to be used in decorating the bikkurim baskets. With great care, Chananel inspected grapes for freshness and perfection, and purchased a few bunches to place around his olives, which were now at peak ripeness, having reached full maturity during the course of the journey. He then worked his way through the

crowds to where pigeons, both the young and the mature, were being sold. He selected several and paid for them. Two of the birds he tethered to his baskets to be offered as olah offerings; the others he’d carry in his hand and gift to a Kohen. When fully prepared, Chananel removed his san-

All around Chananel, the people he’d traveled with were pulling bags off of donkeys or slipping them from their own shoulders, lovingly emptying the contents for which they’d traveled so far. Figs, dates, pomegranates, grapes, sheaves of wheat and barley… dals, washed the dust from his feet, and waited near the entrance to Har HaBayis for others to join him. Nearby, the ox with gilded horns stood ready to be offered as a shlamim on behalf of the community of travelers. After a short while, everyone was ready to begin the ascent. One by one, each person hoisted his own basket upon his shoulder. Even the very wealthy who’d had servants and donkeys transport their supplies until this point were obligated to personally carry their fruits from the moment they stepped upon the mountain. As the sweet notes of the flute rang out, signaling the commencement of their aliyah, they surged forth, singing the verses from Tehillim: “Hallelukah hallelu Kel b’kadsho… Kol haneshamah tahallel Kah hallelukah!” Up, up, up they went, heading toward the Beis HaBechirah, the House of His Choosing. With each step, the basket balanced on Chananel’s shoulder felt lighter despite the physical exertion. It was as if his soul was carrying

him, the lightness he felt inside overpowering the force of gravity. Stepping into the Azarah, the pilgrims were greeted with the heavenly song of the Levi’im: “Aromimcha Hashem ki dilisani…” Only the singing of Levi’im could be heard; from everyone else there was silence. The tremendous awe of the moment washed over the travelers. They’d come so far, and finally they were here, in Hashem’s own House. It was the most holy, beautiful place in Creation. Chananel quietly watched as the first bearer of bikkurim stepped forward, his basket perched upon his shoulder. Memories of yesteryear played through Chananel’s mind, reminding him of the first time he’d brought bikkurim, only one year prior. Suddenly, the world swam before Chananel, everything rapidly shifting out of focus. It was only due to siyata d’Shmaya that he was able to prevent his basket from toppling. Vidui Bikkurim! How could he have forgotten?! Was it only a year ago that he’d suffered overwhelming disgrace? That his face had burned like the flames of the mizbe’ach, heated by the fire of shame? Last year, when he’d brought bikkurim for the first time, he’d been expected to read passages from the holy Torah. It was only through the redness of his face and the silence in place of his speech that the Kohen had surmised his secret: The young man before him had never learned to read. Tall and proud, young and strong… but an orphan, the son of returnees from Bavel who hadn’t known Lashon Kodesh. Was it his fault he’d never been lovingly taught the alef-beis on the knees of his father or crouched in front of a Torah scroll with a melamed? For what reason should he bear the indignity of being less than everyone once again? Chananel was overwhelmed with feelings of inferiority. He frantically imagined himself running out of the Azarah and down Har HaBayis, leaving his pain far behind. But wait. What was that? Slowly, he refocused, the images in front of his eyes taking shape. The pilgrims were going forward to wave their baskets in the prescribed manner, and instead of reading the passages that one must, they were repeating, word by word, after a designated reader. Each and every one of them. The man next to him leaned in and whispered, “They’ve changed the system this year. Too many people were ashamed of their inability to read that their embarrassment stopped them from bringing bikkurim. So the Chachamim appointed an official reader to ensure that no Jew suffers humiliation. Here in the Beis Hamikdash,

we are all treated with dignity.” The cooling waves of relief instantly washed over him. I can do this! I can do this! Chananel silently cried, the gift of dignity having been restored to him. When it was his turn, Chananel stepped forward and made a confession — not that he was illiterate, but that he had “come to that Land that Hashem swore to our forefathers to give us.” He was helped, without shame, by the reader who had “helped” all the others before him. When he finished the vidui, he lowered the basket from his shoulders and held it by the rim. The Kohen stretched forth his hands and placed them beneath the basket, and together they waved it up and down and in all four directions. Upon completion, the official reader and Chananel read aloud the passages from the Torah recounting Lavan’s attempt at

From the time he’d left the comfort of his little stone home in Gush Chalav, he’d undergone a reenactment of exile, wandering about with no roof over his head and no place to put down his packages. He’d walked on and on, until finally, he’d reached the true home of every Yid. He’d reached the House of Hashem. “Abba!” He cried, “We’ve wandered in this world for so many years, for so many generations, and we’ve been so far from You. But You bring us back, Abba, time and again, through your mitzvos… These bikkurim that we bring, I see now that they are so much more than fruit. They are a reminder of where we’ve

But, oh! We cried out! And Hashem heard us, and took us out of Egypt, “to this land, a land flowing with milk and honey.” “And now,” Chananel declared, his voice bold and unwavering, “I have brought the first fruit of the ground, which you, Hashem, have given me.” The Kohen then directed Chananel to place his basket at the southwest corner of the mizbe’ach, and prostrate himself. Falling forward, Chananel found himself caught in sobs the likes of which he’d never experienced. For in this journey, his understanding, like his olives, had matured.

been and where we need to be. They are a connection, a way to rouse our hearts. A way to remember the compassion and love that You have for Your Am Hanivchar. Abba, thank You for the fruit, for the land, for making me a Yid.” Chananel picked himself up, and wiping the tears from his eyes, slowly backed away from the mizbe’ach. Tomorrow he would return to Gush Chalav, but tonight he would sleep within the walls of the Holy City, as commanded. As he walked away, he fervently prayed that he would be able to fulfill the proclamation of the bas kol that rang out as he’d completed the bringing of the bikkurim: the promise that he would merit to bring them again the coming year. May we too merit to bring bikkurim.

Tehillim plays a huge role in our lives. Many pesukim in davening are selected from sefer Tehillim. Kapitlach are said daily as a zechus for a refuah sheleimah for a loved one. In fact, whoever wants a yeshuah in any area recites a few chapters of Tehillim. 1

2

What is Tehillim, and why is it so popular among Klal Yisroel? May one recite Tehillim before davening? May it be recited by heart, or at night? All these and other issues will be addressed in this article. 86 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

Tehillim 3 There are 150 chapters in sefer Tehillim. There is a discussion as to how many chapters were written by Dovid Hamelech.4 Many of the chapters were composed while he was in danger — wandering in the deserts while escaping his enemies — and also during times of joy and light. In sefer Tehillim, Dovid joined the tribulations of his people with his own. When he petitioned for himself, he petitioned for the entire nation, for he identified well with their suffering and with their joy. Through these psalms, Dovid drew closer to Hashem. It has become customary for Yidden to grab a sefer Tehillim when they need to reach out to Hashem for salvation or for praise.5 Dovid Hamelech was born and was niftar on Shavuos;6 therefore, many say that this is an opportune time to recite Tehillim.7 Many have the custom to visit his grave as well.8

Benefits of Tehillim The Maharsha9 says that reciting Tehillim brings one to fear of Hashem. The Pele Yoetz10 says that saying Tehillim has many benefits. He concludes that “One who routinely says Tehillim is protected from all harm befalling his house, his family, etc., and that one who wishes to attach himself to Hashem and His praises should be connected to a sefer Tehillim.”11 Dovid Hamelech asked of Hashem that saying Tehillim should be considered like learning Negaim and Ohalos. Some explain the connection as follows: Tehillim is not necessarily meant to be said by everyone, since Dovid Hamelech wrote it at different times in his life, and the same episodes may not arise for every individual. Negaim and Ohalos are not applicable to everyone either, but we still learn them and get rewarded. Therefore,

Dovid Hamelech requested the saying of Tehillim should be rewarded as if we learned Negaim and Ohalos.12 Saying Tehillim protects you in this world and in the next.13 The Pele Yoetz writes, “We have a tradition that one who has a problem, or pain, or is traveling on the road, should read the entire Tehillim all day without stopping, with kavanah and humbleness; he will see wonders. This tradition has been tried and tested (and works).”14

First, since one is davening for a refuas hanefesh, it will bring about a refuah of the body.18 In addition, one

The Point of Saying Tehillim

is saying the Tehillim so it should be a zechus — and the zechus should help the sick person.19 According to some poskim, one should only spell out the name of the sick person with the 119th chapter of Tehillim if the patient is in grave danger.20 Some poskim are of the opinion that one should not say in the yehi ratzon after Tehillim, “in the merit of sefer Tehillim.”21 Others are not concerned about this since it can be considered a tefillah, and this is the accepted custom.22

Saying Tehillim (besides the benefits based on Kabbalah)15 brings one to d’veikus to Hashem, just as Dovid Hamelech was when he was compiling Tehillim. When one reaches this level, it is a zechus for himself or for the person for whom he is saying Tehillim. Therefore, instead of learning, we say Tehillim for a sick person since this brings closeness to Hashem. Based on this, one should understand the meaning of the words he is saying.16

Why Is It Permitted to Recite Tehillim? There is a halacha stating that words of the Torah may not be used to heal someone.17 Nevertheless, it is permitted to recite Tehillim with the intention of bringing about healing. Many poskim say that the purpose of reciting Tehillim is to improve spiritually, and based on that, there are two explanations.

Saying It Slowly One should recite Tehillim slowly and with the proper pronunciation. One should not fly through it quickly.23

When to Recite the Name of a Person When reciting Tehillim in public (like in shul) and mentioning the name of a person who is not well, the name of the person should be mentioned before the Tehillim is

said.24 When davening for a sick person, one should mention the person’s name, and then the mother’s

name.25 For example, ploni ben plonis. Some explain that there is less kitrug on a woman since she is obligated in fewer mitzvos. Therefore, it is a zechus to mention the mother’s name.26

Reciting Tehillim Before Davening There is a discussion in the poskim if one may recite Tehillim before davening.27 The accepted custom is to permit it only with a minyan.28

Reciting Tehillim by Heart Tehillim is routinely recited by heart. This practice is questionable, as we will see. The written Torah (Torah Shebichsav) may not29 be recited by heart,30 even one word.31 One reason is that one might not pronounce the words correctly.32 Verses that are well known by everyone may

88 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

be recited by heart,33 such as pesukei d’zimra,34 Birchas Kohanim,35 Krias Shema,36 Shiras Hayam37 and others.38 The opinion of many poskim is that the restriction only applies when being motzei someone else in his obligation,39 but saying a pasuk to praise Hashem or for tefillah is allowed.40 Others say that the whole concern applies only to pesukim from the Torah.41 Some are even more lenient and maintain that the whole concern is in regard to reciting it with the trup, but without the trup it is permitted.42 Some poskim hold that if an individual is fluent with a particular verse, then he may recite it by heart, even if most people are not fluent with that verse.43 Most poskim do not allow it unless it is fluent by all.44 Others say that if one does not say a complete pasuk by heart then it is permitted (such as those mentioned in the Gemara).45 Many have the custom of reciting pesukim by heart, such as vayehi binso’a ha’aron, kedusha, etc. Some explain that we can rely on the opinion that holds that the issur only applies if one is being motzei others.46 If a public speaker does not have a chumash readily available, he can recite a pasuk by heart.47

Teachers48 often ask students to memorize Shiras Hayam, Shiras Devorah or Tefillas Chana. This is permitted for a number of reasons.49 Some permit reciting Tehillim by heart, since it is considered a tefillah.50 Moreover, we can rely on those poskim who maintain that the whole concern is being motzei someone in his obligation.51 The Chayai Adam52 frowns upon this practice. Nonetheless, the custom is to recite those chapters that are fluent to all, such as Shir Hama’alos Mimama’akim, and Shir Hama’alos Esa Einay.

Reciting Tehillim Before Chazaras Hashatz Neither the tzibbur53 nor the shatz54 may talk while waiting for chazaras hashatz. Glancing into a sefer is permitted.55 Some say that one may catch up on certain parts of davening that he might have missed,56 or may even recite Tehillim.57

Learning Mikra — Reciting Tehillim at Night The Midrash says that Moshe Rabbeinu knew it was day when Hashem taught him mikra and that

When Dovid Hamelech petitioned for himself, he petitioned for the entire nation, for he identified well with their suffering and with their joy. it was night when Hashem taught him the Mishnah and Gemara.58 Based on this, some say that one should not read mikra at night.59 Kabbalah also frowns upon this.60

Some explain that learning mikra at night arouses the middah of din.61 Nonetheless, there is no actual issur.62 If one reads the pesukim with a targum, this inyan does not apply.63 One may say mikra on leil Shabbos, Motzei Shabbos,64 leil yom tov,65 leil chol hamoed, and leil Yom Kippur.66 The pesukim that are customarily recited at Krias Shema al Hamittah are permitted, since they refer to night.67 One who has a seder halimud every day in Tanach and did not finish learning before night may finish the seder at night.68 Some permit saying mikra during bein hashmashos.69 Many poskim say that Tehillim is not included in this inyan at all.70 Others only permit Tehillim after chatzos.71 Some say it is permitted to read a pasuk for rachamim (and not limud).72 The minhag is to recite pesukim of Tehillim on Yom Kippur night.73

Tehillim on Shabbos Since Dovid Hamelech was niftar on Shabbos, many have the minhag to recite Tehillim on Shabbos.74 Tehillim should not be said in public on Shabbos for a sick person who is not in danger.75 When reciting Tehillim for such a person, it should not be obvious that the Tehillim is being said for him.76

Reciting Tehillim at Different Times 77 It is stated that one should recite Tehillim during the days of Elul, selichos, and during the Yomim Noraim.78 In addition, one should recite Tehillim on Shabbos Shuvah.79

Saying Tehillim for 40 Days Straight There is a well-known segulah that one who says Tehillim for 40 days is saved from harmful events.80

Splitting the Recital of Tehillim It is customary to split the recital of Tehillim among many people in order to finish it every day.81 If one is saying a chapter of Tehillim b’tzibbur, each pasuk should be said separately.82

I lock my bedroom door and lean against it, panting, relieved that I’d avoided a direct hit. He is on the other side of the door, wielding a broomstick, poised to attack. I am many times his age, many times his weight, and almost double his height, but my hands are trembling from helplessness and frustration — and my heart is pounding with fear. Fear. I am afraid of my son. I sit down and try to shut out the banging as wooden stick hits door. “Open the door! I’m gonna unlock it!” Just breathe, I tell myself, as something hard (PlayMags?) hits next, and then pieces continue to beat a relentless staccato on the door. The light on the cordless goes on, and I check it disinterestedly. I’m in no state to talk to anyone. Oh, but it’s Goldy. Good ol’ Goldy. The one person who can listen without judging. She couldn’t have chosen a better moment to call. I don’t know why she called or what she wants; I don’t even give her a chance. “I can’t take it!” My despair spills into the phone. “I don’t know what to do! I just locked myself into my bedroom. Ruvi was holding a broomstick, ready to hit me. I mean, he hit, but he missed.” Goldy doesn’t say anything yet. Good. “What else am I sup-

posed to do? Tell me what! I had him evaluated. I took him for therapy. I took parenting classes. Read books. I tried structuring the afternoons. I tried positive reinforcement. I brought him to an audiologist. To a neurologist. I tried a host of vitamins. We’ve paid thousands of dollars and spent hundreds of hours. And when he gets into this mode, he’s simply out of control. I don’t know what to think anymore!” I hear Shuey protesting. I tense up, listening out for trouble, but all seems okay outside my fortress. “I’m scared for myself — but even more for the other kids. You have no idea what he did to the baby this afternoon. And Ruchy’s homework is shredded on the kitchen floor. And Shuey’s face has so many scratches, he said his rebbi keeps asking how he got hurt.” I am crying. “I can’t believe I can’t handle my own son. That I need to protect my kids from their brother. When something sets him off, all I can do is bite my lips and tell Hashem, ‘Please. Please don’t let his siblings get harmed. Please make him grow up healthy. Please help me deal with him. Please give me koach so I shouldn’t explode...’ Because everything I try backfires. It’s come to a point where the best option is just not to do anything, so that I won’t do anything damaging when pushed to my limits like that.” I pace the floor miserably. What’s Goldy to say? I’m just so thankful she’s not sharing with me all the unsolicited gems I get from all over. Just be more firm. Give him two good petch. Did you try Rebbetzin X’s course? Did you try this therapeutic method? That one? “You are doing so much hishtadlus,” comes Goldy’s calm reply. “You’re doing everything you can... and more. Just keep davening, because that’s all you can do. “You know,” Goldy continues. “I recently heard — I wish I’d remember who this was — about an exceptional person and talmid chacham whose mother was asked to share her chinuch secret. She said that she can take no credit. When her son was a child, he was impossible. Unmanageable. He’d get into trouble at school. Do dangerous things. Fight. And she was at a loss. There was nothing she could do to tame him or make him behave. “She shared that every time her son would be in trouble or do something terrible, she took out a sefer Tehillim and said a kapitel, asking Hashem for help in raising

her complex child.” I listen. “Wow,” I say, and let the idea flow through me. I unlock my bedroom door and head downstairs to the kitchen to set the supper table. I have a plan. It takes less than fifteen minutes to put it to test. “Hey!” Ruchy yells. “Ruvi put his licked pasta in my plate. I’m not eating supper! Ewwy!” Of course it was Ruchy’s plate — with her specialty glutenfree pasta. A confetti shower of chicken nuggets accentuates the announcement, courtesy of Ruvi. He then takes the ketchup bottle and squirts a helping onto Aidy’s high chair tray, making sure it drips onto her sleeves as well and leaves a trail on the floor. He’s holding the bottle of juice, and I know just where that’s going to land... My emotions contort in dizzying overwhelm. I open my mouth to protest. To protect. To defend. To yell. To make every parenting mistake in the book. And instead, I head to the seforim closet to get my Tehillim. “Ashrei ha’ish,” I whisper in the relative quiet of the living room, swallowing a sob. I say pasuk by pasuk listlessly, still numb around the edges. I turn to kapitel beis. “Lamah ragshi goyim…” My pace is slower now, the timeless words soothing me. “She’al mimeni

v’etnah… Just request of Me and I will give…” The tears start to come. I ask — a wordless, senseless, pained request, but Hashem knows. Before I am even done, I already have company on the couch. “Ma,” Ruvi’s anxiety flares up as he takes in my tears. “What are you doing?” The others stand at the periphery of the room. I hug him close, if a little stiffly. I draw his siblings near. “I am davening,” I say. “I am asking Hashem that He should make my kinderlach grow up to be good. To do mitzvos. Not to fight. I’m davening for all of you.” In varying degrees of maturity, I see them taking it in. And so, with my sefer Tehillim in a handy spot — and many more difficult moments ahead — I know that there’s something I can do. I will sometimes fail. I will sometimes forget. I will sometimes lose it... I will also lose track and keep repeating the same kapitlach to make sure I don’t miss any. But over the next few months, I will always come back to draw strength and clarity from the hallowed words of Dovid Hamelech. I will finish the sefer, and I will start it again. I will eventually regroup to try new hishtadlus, learn new skills, but foremost, I will use this priceless tool I have, a therapeutic method that always helps.

Basketry is the art of weaving pliable materials into functional objects, such as mats or containers.

Baskets of the Past Basket weaving is a craft that goes back as far as history can remember. Back in the day when there were no plastic or cardboard containers and few other options existed for storing items, baskets were an indispensable choice.

Materials Baskets can be woven from various materials. The most common ones are wood splints, cane, metal wire and horsehair. Creative basket weavers can intertwine many other kinds of materials to form baskets. For example, nature lovers will challenge you to take a walk in the woods and collect loose stems or branches and demonstrate how nearly anything can be twisted into a basket. Others have used recycled plastic bags, dyed into various colors, to create plastic baskets.

Serving multiple purposes, baskets were used to hold clothing and food, and even carry water. To historians and ethnologists (those who study the characteristics of people and cultures), baskets tell a story. By studying a basket, they can determine a lot about the socioeconomic heritage of a place. To that end, fragments of baskets were discovered in ancient Egyptian pyramids. In other locations, parts of woven basket liners were found in old pottery shards. These finds proved to be very revealing.

Functions of Baskets Baskets were traditionally used, first and foremost, for storage and transport. Additionally, baskets were also used while harvesting, cooking, and processing seeds and grains. They were also used as laundry receptacles and as nets to catch fish. In the times of the Beis Hamikdash, Yidden decorated beautiful baskets and placed their first fruits inside to be brought to Yerushalayim. In 2020, baskets are commonly used for plants, storage and traditional picnics. And let’s not forget the classic mishloach manos baskets!

Weaving With Kids? Weaving is an exciting activity that kids can enjoy. Though you can experiment with various supplies, the simplest is probably to weave a paper basket. In a few short steps, your child can fashion a basket of his own! • First, cut strips of paper of the same width and length. • Using four horizontal strips and four vertical strips, weave the base of the basket, leaving loose ends on all four sides. • Fold up the loose ends and weave two strips around the now-standing sides to complete the basket.

Unique Baskets It took 56 women 40 days to weave the world’s largest recorded basket. Made of wicker and bamboo, it served as a fundraiser for an organization in Saudi Arabia. At 72 feet by 48 feet, and some 40 feet tall, the basket weighs 13.4 tons! Over in Ghent, Belgium, Jos de Troyer twisted a basket measuring 34.5 feet in diameter and weighing 99,000 pounds. In April 2000, he hung it over the town square in Ghent’s historic center, where it is still hanging now, twenty years later! In the United Arab Emirates, a landscaping company was tempted to create the largest display of hanging baskets. They succeeded at breaking the world record by suspending 2,968 baskets blooming with plants and floral arrangements.

The Longaberger Basket Building Imagine making millions from crafting wooden baskets! Dave Longaberger founded his basket-building company in a small workshop in Ohio in 1973. By 2000, the company was worth $1 billion and employed more than 8,000 workers. In 1998, the company moved into its iconic seven-story-high building, shaped like a Longaberger basket! A trademark “Longaberger” is known to be of superior quality. As popular collectors’ items, their handcrafted pieces have sold for as much as $1,700. How do you know if your solid maplewood basket is a bona fide Longaberger? Every Longaberger fashioned since 1982 has the date, weaver’s initials and the company logo stamped on its underside. Longaberger went out of business in 2018.
