YOM TOV ENRICHMENT (Re: Tehillim Contest, Issue 36) Your Shavuos issue was magnificent and enriched our yom tov. The content was intelligent and inspirational. My children, ranging from age seven to thirteen, all participated in the Tehillim contest. It was so gratifying to see them poring over their Tehillims at every opportunity throughout yom tov! My davening, too, was uplifted after reading the beautiful article about the meaning of Tehillim. I clipped the sidebar with the list of kapitlach that are mesugal for specific occasions. I plan to refer to it in the years to come. Thank you, from my entire family. S. Jacobi

(Re: The Yard Sign Initiative, Issue 35) Your “Thank you, Hatzolah” initiative is brilliant! For my family, creating the posters was especially meaningful. Our hearts are overflowing with hakaras hatov for this awesome organization. My elderly grandmother was stricken with the virus and became severely sick. We were extremely fearful of sending her to the hospital unaccompanied. Her situation deteriorated each day, and we were in a terrible bind. Baruch Hashem, Hatzolah stepped in, and began to care for my grandmother. They set up specialized equipment in her room, which they monitored carefully. Hatzolah volunteers also dropped in often to check on my grandmother’s condition, and this was no easy feat, The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. considering her apartment is up three long flights of stairs! Throughout the entire ordeal, we marveled at the utter selflessness, the menschlichkeit, and the professionalism of these devoted Hatzolah members. My grandmother is, b’chasdei Hashem, recovering in the comfort of her own home, surrounded by caring family. My children crafted these posters with a lot of heart. It is their way of expressing appreciation to Hatzolah for their overwhelming kindness. (It also filled their time nicely in these long, schoolfree days — an added bonus. For this, you have this mother’s thanks!) Sincerely, C.E.

(Re: Celebrating Uniqueness, Issue 34) The article you featured about picky eaters helped me tremendously. Some time back, my son started resisting more and more foods. It got so bad that he developed anxiety just at the thought of tasting foods, and he even started resisting familiar foods. And since I didn’t have an appropriate method for managing his pickiness, he started being controlling around food. After reading the article in The Boro Park View, I decided to take a two-week break in which I’d allow my son to eat whatever he likes. Once the two weeks were up, I introduced him to the method mentioned: first touching the food, then smelling, then licking, and then eating a very small piece of the food. Only if he was still okay with it would he choose to go ahead and eat the food in question. I owe the writer a big thank you. It had been so bad that my son, who’s asthmatic, would panic and ask for his inhaler at mealtime because he got so anxious around food. With this technique, my son started liking a lot of foods, and he’s eating much better now. He now knows that he does not have to like everything and that he’s not being forced to eat. Thank you very much. S.S.

Thank you for your fantastic magazine week after week. It is so balanced, containing humor, information, letters from community members and recipes. Can you please publish an article including an infographic on helmet safety? I see many children riding bikes (and scooters) all over — most often wearing their helmets incorrectly. I even saw one little boy wearing a helmet that was not fastened. I think it would be of great benefit to us all if you can publish the correct way to size and wear a helmet. Thank you! R.I.

In these mishnos, we read about Reb Yochanan ben Zakai’s five top talmidim: Reb Eliezer ben Horkenus, Reb Yehoshua ben Chananya, Reb Yoisi Hakohen, Reb Shimon ben Nesanel and Reb Elazar ben Aroch. Reb Yochanan ben Zakai had to give his shiurim in the courtyard of the Beis Hamikdash, because he had so many thousands of talmidim, and no hall was big enough to accommodate them at once. Of those thousands, these five were his most prized talmidim, so one can imagine how exceptional they were. Of these five, Reb Eliezer ben Horkenus was the greatest. Reb Yochanan said that if you were to put all chachmei Yisroel, including the other four, on one side of a scale and Reb Eliezer on the other, Reb Eliezer would tip the scale. The next mishnah continues to share similes of praise, which Reb Yochanan ben Zakai used to convey the extent of the maalos of these five talmidim. When it came to Reb Eliezer, he described him as bor sud sh’eino me’abed tipah (a well that is sealed tightly with cement so not a drop of water can escape it), meaning that the Torah he absorbed never left his photographic mind. Now, a good memory is very nice, but what’s the big deal? It’s something a person is born with. Of all Reb Eliezer’s rare maalos, Reb Yochanan thought this was his biggest chiddush? This is the Reb Eliezer to whose shiurim the entire pa’amalya shel maaleh came down to listen, and his only significant quality was his natural memory? But when we look deeper into Reb Eliezer’s phenomenal life story, we realize what Reb Yochanan is trying to teach us — and what a profound lesson for life this simile of the impenetrable well turns out to be. We don’t have to delve too deep to
learn Reb Eliezer’s life story. Reb Eliezer himself shares it in the opening of the volume Pirkei d’Reb Eliezer, which he wrote. He talks about a bachur Eliezer and his wealthy father Horkenus. Horkenus owned vast fields of land, and Eliezer was part of the team who plowed them. One day, Horkenus found his son crying. He asked him why he was crying, but Eliezer didn’t answer. Horkenus figured it was because the workload was too hard, so he gave him a less menial job — to sit on the oxen while they plowed beneath him. Still, the next day Horkenus found Eliezer crying, and again, Eliezer would not explain his tears. So Horkenus gave him yet an easier job. The scene repeated itself the next day, and finally Eliezer admitted to his father, “I am crying because I want to go and learn Torah. “You are 28 years old, Eliezer, Horkenus explained to his son. “You don’t even know how to read. You will never know how to read. Let me tell you what we’ll do. We’ll find you a shidduch. You will marry and have children, and those children will be able to learn Torah. Horkenus was one of the talmidei chachamim of the generation of Tannaim who also happened to be wealthy. We don’t for a second doubt that Horkenus hadn’t tried to teach Eliezer Torah from when he’d been three years old. All of his other sons were great gaonim. Why couldn’t Eliezer read or write at this advanced age of almost 30? Obviously, he was learning-disabled, and much as his father invested, the efforts it took to teach him to read seemed futile. So when Horkenus declared to his beloved son that he could not learn, it was with fatherly love, because he knew, after a lifetime of sparing no effort, that Eliezer really could not learn and that it would only hurt him to keep failing. He took him into the farm to work so that he should at least be productive on the field. Eliezer ran away, sat onto a stone, and cried and fasted for three days. Eliyahu Hanavi saw this scene, and he came down and asked Reb Eliezer, “Why are you crying? Eliezer said, “Because I want to learn Torah. Eliyahu Hanavi advised him, “Go to the yeshivah of Reb Yochanan ben Zakai in Yerushalayim, and there you can learn Torah. The tears of this alte bachur, a learning-disabled farm worker, were so genuine, so pure, that they instigated Eliyahu Hanavi to come talk to him, something the biggest
tzaddikim can only achieve after years and years of fasting — which alone is a great chizuk for us — but the story doesn’t end there. Eliezer trekked to Yerushalayim. He entered the yeshivah of Reb Yochanan ben Zakai, and he sat down and cried. Reb Yochanan asked this new bachur why he was crying, and Reb Eliezer answered, “Because I want to learn Torah. “Okay, answered Reb Yochanan ben Zakai, certain before him was another shteiging talmid chacham who had come from afar to join the high caliber of talmidim his yeshivah attracted. “Tell me some of the masechtas you know by heart. “I don’t know any, he answered. “Some Mishnayos? Reb Eliezer shook his head. Reb Yochanan ben Zakai was shocked. Was this newcomer a major anav or something? “Maybe some pesukim? he prodded further. Still, Reb Eliezer shook his head. “So tell me the Krias Shema. Reb Eliezer could not say Krias Shema on his own. And neither brachos, when Reb

Yochanan prompted him. Which means that until that point, every time Reb Eliezer had to make a bracha, he had to be yotzei from someone else! That’s how badly learningdisabled he was. Reb Yochanan leaned closer to Reb Eliezer and asked him gently, “So what do you want from my yeshivah? I can’t help you here. And Reb Eliezer broke down again until the tears flowed and entered Reb Yochanan’s heart, and Reb Yochanan asked two of his prominent talmidim to take this newcomer and teach him something. Every week, the two talmidim taught the newcomer two basic halachos of the Torah, but Reb Eliezer could not remember these two simple halachos. The entire week he would study and review them, over and over, hundreds of times, until they were able to teach him another two halachos the next week. Reb Eliezer did not eat for days on end;

he subsisted on mounds of earth for sustenance, so engrossed and determined was he to master the Torah. And with time, through his incredible hasmadah and unstoppable determination, he was able to sit through and participate in Reb Yochanan’s shiurim. After a few years, Reb Eliezer’s brothers incited their father against him. They argued that he had run off, but that one day he would come back and expect the grand inheritance. They urged their father to go to the beis din in Yerushalayim to write that Reb Eliezer would not be part of the yerushah. Horkenus agreed; after all, Eliezer couldn’t learn, and he wasn’t helping on the field, either. He didn’t deserve a part. Horkenus came to Yerushalayim and went to the yeshivah of Reb Yochanan ben Zakai. As a great Tannai, he was given an honorable welcome. Reb Yochanan turned to the alte bachur, Reb Eliezer, and invited him to say a dvar Torah to the assembled. Reb Eliezer had never spoken before, but his Rebbi insisted. Sparks of fire erupted between Reb Eliezer and Reb Yochanan’s mouth as the words of Torah burst forth between them. Suddenly, Horkenus recognized his son, and he immediately wrote over his entire fortune to him. Now we can understand why Reb Yochanan considered Reb Eliezer’s greatest accomplishment his brilliant memory. Because how did he accomplish it? Only through hot tears and toil. Even though he was learning-disabled and did not even know Krias Shema at age 28, and even though his father encouraged him that he should marry and his children would give him the nachas of Torah that he couldn’t give himself, Reb Eliezer refused to take no for an answer. Surely you have all heard about Hagaon Harav Pesach Eliyahu Falk, zt”l, of Gateshead, one of the leading poskim of our generation who was niftar a few months ago. It is widely known that, as a child, Rav Falk struggled with his learning, and it struck me that his story bore astonishing similarity to that of Reb Eliezer ben Horkonus. But I was hesi-

tant to publish this as fact before verifying it for certain with his chashuve wife, which I did this week in preparation for this article. Rebetzin Falk told me that indeed the story is true. Her late husband did not do well in his childhood years, to the degree that his primary school principal told his father, “You’ll never see nachas from this boy.” The first yeshivah he went to wasn’t a good fit, and it looked like he was just not cut out for learning, so his father encouraged him to come work in his seforim store. But in the back of the determined bachur’s mind, his mother’s words stuck: “Your name is Eliyahu,” she would encourage him. “You can become the Vilna Gaon!” And he asked his father to give him another year. He went to Sunderland Yeshivah, where Rav Shammai Zahn, zt”l, paired him up with an older bachur, Reb Akiva Greenberg. After three months, the bachur met Rav Falk’s father, and he surprised him by saying, “I can see gadlus in this boy.” Indeed, it was there that Rav Falk’s ability first “took off.” “When we were newly married,” shares Rebetzin Falk, “he told me that I probably knew hilchos Shabbos better than he did. After all, I had completed three years of seminary. He told me that he felt the only way he’d pick up halacha thoroughly was by teaching it, as he would have to prepare. When he found out that the halacha maggid shiur in Gateshead Yeshivah Gedolah was moving, he asked if he could take over the small shiur. And that’s when the halacha side of him sprouted.” And the Torah world merited to reap the results of Rav Falk’s humility, sweat and toil, for he grew up to become a world posek in halacha and hashkafah, who was sought-after for his clarity by gedolim from every circle. Yehi zichro baruch. Let us take chizuk from these great tzaddikim whose early years looked bleak and hopeless, but whose extraordinary contributions, borne of hard work and effort, continue to spread light in our world. Tears and determination can change nature. Never give up!

More Questions Than Answers as Restrictions Ease Promising numbers have had elected officials slowly dialing back restrictions, although ambiguities in those announcements have left many New York State residents scratching their heads in confusion. Governor Andrew Cuomo’s June 2nd announcement that day camps can reopen on June 29 was met with a collective, statewide sigh of relief. But the lack of clarity on what restrictions and regulations would be in effect have had many wondering whether or not camps can realistically operate under those guidelines. As of June 7, there has still been no official word from Albany on whether overnight camps would be permitted to open for the season, and multiple organizations and institutions called on community members to petition the governor for their approval, offering assurances that camps would stay entirely on lockdown and would develop stringent protocols with infectious disease specialists to prevent further spread of the virus. New York City finally took its first baby steps toward its new normal on Monday as it began phase 1 of the state’s reopening plan, which precludes most businesses from opening and only allows curbside pickup at retail stores. On a more positive note, a beleaguered Mayor Bill de Blasio gave city dwellers something to smile about, cancelling alternate side of the street parking from Monday through June 21 and lifting the 8 p.m. curfew he enacted last week. The Monsey area entered phase 2 on Tuesday, and Long Island followed suit one day later, with residents finally allowed to shop in stores and permitted to get professional haircuts. In a special announcement, Cuomo stated that he is allowing shuls to operate ahead of schedule at 25% of their official capacity in all regions that have begun phase 2. Also getting an early go-ahead from Albany under phase 2 is outdoor dining, which will be permitted with tables spaced a minimum of six feet apart and masks to be worn by staff at all times and by customers who aren’t seated at tables. As of June 26, graduations will be permitted all across New York, with a maximum of 150 guests per event, which would require bigger schools to run multiple events in order to accommodate graduates and their families. Frustration continued to mount this week over apparent inequities in coronavirus policies and their enforcement. Large groups of demonstrators who took to the streets to protest the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police were allowed to march
38 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / June 10, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
freely, and police did little to restrain anarchists that looted stores with abandon. At the same time, authorities in Brooklyn cracked down on Jewish communities, looking for shuls with more than 10 people present and illegally opened businesses, particularly after the city’s protective curfew was enacted by New York City. Asked by Hamodia reporter Reuvain Borchardt to explain what appeared to be radically different policing policies, the mayor justified his actions by saying that “400 years of American racism” constituted “an extraordinary crisis” that superseded pandemic restrictions and the right for people to hold religious services. Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein called the mayor out, tweeting to him that he was “100 percent wrong.” Eichenstein wrote: “Sure, protestors have the right under the First Amendment to march against racism, which needs to be confronted head on in this country, but the same First Amendment guarantees religious people the right to practice their faith.”
NYC Sheriff: Patrols in Jewish Shopping Districts Are Informative, Not Punitive The rolling caravans of vehicles bearing New York City Sheriff’s Office logos have been the topic of much conversation, with many wondering why officials are cracking down on desperate business owners who have opened their stores out of extreme financial stress, while ignoring so many others who are also defying official orders. New York City Sheriff Joseph Fucito told Boro Park 24 that his officers have been tasked with reminding businesses about social distancing requirements as they began preparing for retail pickups under phase 1 of Governor Andrew Cuomo’s reopening plan. Fucito said that the many cars sent to the area are there to ensure his officers’ safety during this time of unrest and that no summonses would be issued until at least June 8. “Our intentions are not to go there and do heavyhanded enforcement,” said Sheriff Fucito. “In fact, quite the opposite; the complaints have been coming in, and what I’ve suggested is we go there and hand out masks and educational material.” Fucito conceded that his patrols with their daily broadcasted social distancing messages have been difficult for the community and that he knows that businesses have been hurting.
“We have to go because that’s the role we’ve been given,” said Fucito.
Thruway Authority Resumes Cash Tolls Sixty-three days after enacting emergency measures to switch exclusively to contactless tolling to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the New York State Thruway Authority is once again accepting cash at all staffed booths on the 496-mile-long highway. The Thruway suspended cash transactions on March 22 because of the coronavirus outbreak and will mail a single bill to all those who do not have E-ZPass for all tolls incurred during the shutdown, which lasted through 11:59 p.m. on June 3. In the interim, the Thruway Authority has installed plexiglass dividers to separate motorists and its collectors, who will be required to wear face masks and to sanitize their workstations multiple times during their workday.
“During these unprecedented times, we thank all of our toll collection staff and customers who have seamlessly adjusted to the ever-changing conditions that COVID-19 has presented,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Matthew J. Driscoll. “As we move forward, we will be taking every step possible to protect our workforce and drivers while continuing a high level of service our customers have come to expect.”

Senator Simcha Felder Urges BP Residents to Shop Local As New York City enters phase 1 of reopening, Senator Simcha Felder is fighting to save small local businesses and rallying for grassroots support for the campaign launched by The Boro Park View in conjunction with Admark. Bold red posters displayed in storefronts across the district alert customers that they are open for business and urge residents to shop local, so that small businesses should not be counted among those lost to the coronavirus. Senator Felder came down to several shops on Friday to spread the message, and in a press release issued on Monday, he urged residents to patronize local stores.
40 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / June 10, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
“Small businesses are essential to our economy and to every thriving neighborhood,” Felder said. “Shop owners are your friends, neighbors and relatives. For months, they have been choking, and now they are at the breaking point. By shopping local, we can all do our part to sustain and protect them. “Look for the bright red sign,” urged Senator Felder, “and when you need to shop, remember to shop local.” Rallying for the cause, Yossi Itzkowitz, CEO of Toys4U, delivered a passionate personal message, saying, “Local small businesses are really struggling now. I know it firsthand. Now is the time, before buying anything, to make an effort to shop local and ensure local businesses will be there for you in the future.” “Communities depend on having local stores available for essential needs. Shop local so we can survive together,” said Mr. Chaim Klein, owner of PlugIns Electronics and Appliances. Pointing to the operation of big-box businesses, Felder continues to work on effecting policy changes to accelerate the complete reopening of
local businesses so that he can enable them to cut their losses, insisting, “We must allow small businesses to operate safely, legally and effectively, now.” To request a poster, contact Senator Felder’s office at 718-253-2015 or email Felder@nysenate.gov

Recap: Elisheva and her family are in shock about the huge, brand-new apartment they’ve won. Blumi returns to England. Still very upset about the yad, she wonders about the anonymous bachur. Binyamin is gripped with anxiety over the misplaced envelope. He has lost his desire to earn money, and realizes that the whole “job” was never really a good thing for him. “You look very cheerful today, Reb Yisroel! What happened? Did your granddaughter visit with her baby again?” Elisheva’s father smiled and shook his head. No. “So, what is it?” Reb Zundel Kravin hung his cane on the back of his chair and sat down at the table. “They’ve given us these heavy pitchers again. I’m telling you, it’s like a hotel here, but if I can’t serve myself and lift this heavy glass pitcher, why do I need all this elegance?” “I’ll pour for you, Reb Zundel.” Emmanuel suddenly appeared behind them. “Juice or seltzer?” “Seltzer with just a bit of juice. Thank you, Emmanuel.” The employee filled the cup while Reb Zundel turned to his tablemate again. “Nu, Reb Yisroel,” he prodded fondly. “Won’t you tell me what is making you so happy? Did you finish a masechta?” “He’s about to finish one,” Emmanuel said as he set down the cup. “Right, Mr. Yisroel? He has only three daf to go.” “Four,” Elisheva’s father corrected him, and tasted a bit of mashed potatoes with the edge of his fork. “Oh, baruch Hashem, baruch Hashem, you are so fortunate to be doing that! May you merit to begin and finish many more
masechtos!” the elderly man wished his friend warmly. “So is that why you’ve been smiling since the minute you came into the dining room?” “Maybe because of that, too,” Emmanuel replied, instead of the person being asked. “But he has another reason for his happiness. May I tell him, Mr. Yisroel?” Elisheva’s father made a noncommittal motion with his head, and Emmanuel decided that it was a sign of acquiescence. “His daughter just won a big, new apartment for her family.” He pulled over a chair, sat down next to the two older men, and proceeded to fill a plate for himself. “And it’s all thanks to her devoted father. Yes, yes, the man sitting here; he’s the one who bought the raffle tickets for his daughter. It’s a huge apartment, and she already told him on the phone yesterday that they are going to make a comfortable, quiet little suite for him there, so that he can come and live with them!” “Really! How could you not tell us such a thing, Reb Yisroel?” Reb Zundel asked. “We have to start organizing a goodbye party!” “It’s also to his credit,” Reb Yisroel said, smiling at Emmanuel. “Why is that?” “He showed me the catalog.”

“Which catalog?” Reb Zundel asked. “The catalog of the raffle prizes,” Emmanuel clarified, chomping on his lettuce. “I bought a raffle ticket for the car, but I didn’t win.” “Too bad you didn’t show that catalog to me,” Reb Zundel said regretfully. “I would have also tried for the big apartment. But on second thought, I don’t know which of my children I would have given it to. They would have just fought over it. So it’s good that I didn’t see it, just like it’s good that they won’t have anything to fight about when I leave this world.” He guffawed. “Actually, maybe my shirts; I have a few good ones.” Emmanuel turned back to Reb Yisroel. “So, when are they moving in there?” he asked. “It depends,” Reb Yisroel said. “What does it depend on? When they get the place?” “Yes.” “And when will they make you your suite? Before they move in or afterward?” Reb Yisroel shook his head, indicating that he did not know. Emmanuel pulled one of the little dogs out of his pocket and put it on a nearby chair along with a piece of bread. The puppy gobbled it down in a few bites and raised its head expectantly for more. “You won’t have such a cutie in the new house, Reb Yisroel,” Emmanuel said. “You’ll miss my pets, won’t you?” “If he misses something, it will be you, Emmanuel,” Reb Zundel chided. “Not the dogs. He’ll have other sweet things there — his grandchildren, great-grandchildren.” “He has just one great-grandson,” Emmanuel corrected him, eager to show off his knowledge. “Hey, there’s a catalog right there.” He jumped up to get it. “Didn’t you see these catalogs all over the place, Rabbi Kravin? This organization does a ton of advertising.”
46 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / June 10, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Reb Zundel didn’t even deign the glossy pages a look. “At my age, these raffles don’t interest me anymore,” he said. “But it’s a different story with Reb Yisroel. He’s still young — at least three years younger than me.” Emmanuel leafed through the booklet. “Here, do you want to see what a gorgeous apartment your friend is soon going to be living in? Look at these pictures! Look at the view from the porch! Look at the china closet and the kitchen!” “It’s not a real picture,” Rabbi Kravin scoffed. “Where’s the apartment? Here in Bnei Brak? Don’t you see that the picture of the porch has the views of the Jerusalem Hills?” “Well, of course the pictures are not exactly like the real thing,” Emmanuel said. “The real apart-
“Nu, Reb Yisroel,” he prodded fondly. “Won’t you tell me what is making you so happy?” ment probably doesn’t have this exact table on the porch, along with the umbrella and bowl of fruit, and if it has a china closet, I’m sure it won’t come filled with all these silver items.” “My granddaughter is studying to do that,” Rabbi Kravin said. “She once showed me how she makes gorgeous pictures, even when there’s really nothing there.” “Nothing there?” Elisheva’s father, whose participation in the conversation had been minimal up until now, suddenly recoiled. “What, it’s all a lie?!” “Of course not; it’s absolutely true that your daughter won a magnificent apartment,” Emmanuel soothed him. “What Reb Zundel means to say is that, as of now, the apartment has just walls and a nice floor, without all the beautiful things inside.”
“And without the view from the porch.” Some of the elderly people around them suddenly noticed that the catalog was the center of attention. They asked what was going on, Emmanuel explained, and the booklet was passed around from hand to hand. Everyone wanted to congratulate Reb Yisroel on his win, but he had already bentched and gone back to his room. Eliyahu and Elisheva were waiting for him there, along with the cake that Elisheva always brought for her father. “We are going to see the apartment now, Tatty,” she told him. “I want you to come with us, okay?” Her father rejected the idea. “I’ll come when it’s ready,” he said hoarsely. And after a moment, he added, “Maybe.” ***** Of all their children, Eliyahu and Elisheva chose to take just Miri with them to see the new apartment. Elisheva didn’t know if Miri realized that it was an effort to compensate her, so to speak, for the late stage at which they’d told her about the millionaire bankrolling Tzippy’s wedding. Miri didn’t say a thing. She was pleased with the offer, and happily joined her parents. They walked around the apartment, examining it in silence. Elisheva stood in the middle of the large dining room, gazing at the huge floor tiles that were covered with a thin layer of construction dust. Obviously, the building had been completed only very recently. “Did you see the kitchen, Mommy?” Miri called out. “Yes.” It was also huge. And she’d noticed that the small light bulbs glittering in the ceiling were the only lights on in the whole house. Even the lights in the large crystal chandelier, which spilled down from the dining room ceil-

ing, were off. But the sun that beamed through the glass doors that separated the dining room from the porch provided more than enough light during this mid-afternoon hour. “This house is not for us, Eliyahu,” Elisheva said, after walking around for a few more minutes. She sat down on a folding chair she’d found in one of the bedrooms. “Not for us?” Eliyahu, who was checking the hinges on a door, turned to her. “Why not?” “It’s not… us, such a fancy place.” He looked around, as though seeing the house for the first time. “Fancy? What’s so fancy about it?” She smiled. “The tiles. The paint job. The kitchen cabinetry. All the lighting in the bedrooms.” “Oh, yes, there are lots of cabinets in the kitchen. I didn’t look at them too closely. But it’s good to have a lot of kitchen cabinets, right? That’s what you said when we came to see Tzippy’s apartment.” “Yes, it really is a wonderful thing.” At this point, she almost laughed. “But as beautiful as Tzippy’s kitchen is, this one is almost twice the size, and much more luxurious.” She stood up and went back to the kitchen. Eliyahu followed. “Look at these drawers… the countertops… the glass doors with those etched designs… the recessed lighting… the moldings…” “You don’t like these things? I thought you’d be happy. You never had any of these extras before.” “I do like them,” she admitted. “A bit.” Now she really began to laugh at her husband’s completely practical approach. “But on the other hand, it’s not my style. The children won’t understand…” She trailed off, not sure if he understood her.
“I think what’s most important is what we think about this whole thing,” he said, running a finger over the granite countertop. “We didn’t choose to buy or renovate an apartment; we didn’t plan to invest any energy, money, time or patience in it. And we didn’t — the whole thing was given to us, as is! This grandeur won’t become the center of our lives. We got this place, so we thank Hashem for giving us some more space for our family. That’s it! What’s so complicated?” Miri was nowhere to be seen. She must have gone out to the large balcony. Elisheva looked around but didn’t answer her husband’s question. What’s so complicated? Her thought process was so not cerebral; it was nothing like her
in this huge space? It will look like a wilting flower that some kids stick into a pile of dirt! “And in the dining room, we’ll put our table with our hodgepodge of chairs, and in the girls’ room, we’ll put their cheap, plastic chest of drawers…” She played with the wide, nickel handle of the cabinet on which she was leaning. “You’re forgetting that we’re supposed to be getting furniture for the rooms. But still, what difference does it make?” He rubbed his palm on the edge of the counter. “What bothered you all the years was the tiny space, not the plastic chest of drawers or our collection of chairs in the dining room.” “That’s what I thought,” she whispered. “Now I see that I’m so happy with this house, and not only because of its size. Deep inside, I love the beauty, and I adore this kitchen, and everything else the house comes with… and I feel strange about that. More than strange. I feel… bad.” “I’m happy that you are happy,” Eliyahu said simply. “I think every woman wants a nice house. The question is to what extent the house serves her, or whether she serves it. We won’t buy a big fridge, for example, but what about a freezer, which we never bought because we never had room for it?” And no money for, Elisheva thought to herself. “Now we can buy one and put it next to the refrigerator. This will be a perfect spot for them both.” “Right.” She smiled at her husband’s practical solution. “And this way, it won’t look to you like a flower stuck into a dusty mound, right?” Her smile widened. “Right. B’ezras Hashem, it won’t.” To be continued...
“Deep inside, I love the beauty, and I adore this kitchen, and everything else the house comes with… and I feel strange about that. More than strange. I feel… bad.”

husband’s logical and straight way of thinking. “Look at that huge space for a fridge,” she finally said. “This is all for one fridge?” “Yes, like Tzippy’s.” “But we’re not going to buy a fridge like hers,” he said dismissively. “As far as I know, we didn’t get a grant to buy new appliances, only a lot of space in which to put the old ones.” “I know…” She took a deep breath. “When I say that this house is not for us, I mean that Tzippy’s mother-in-law bought that fridge for her, not me, and she fit it to the size of the space in Tzippy’s kitchen. But what will we do here? We’ll put our old fridge

Trump Buoyed by Strong Economic Numbers THE PULSE: On Friday, the Bureau of Labor Statistics re-
leased its jobs numbers for May. The numbers caught economists by surprise. Most economists had expected record job losses; many had forecasted losses numbering an additional 7.5 million. However, according to the Labor Department’s jobs report, the economy added 2.5 million jobs, bringing down the unemployment numbers from an April high of 14.7% to 13.3%. Stock markets rallied on the news, with the DOW Jones surging 829 points, and the Nasdaq reaching an intraday all-time high of 9,845. President Trump hailed the numbers as “an affirmation of all the work we’ve been doing.” He derided the faulty projections as “the greatest miscalculation in the history of business shows” and compared the economy to a “rocketship” that was beginning to take off.

THE IMPACT: The economic news is a boon for Trump.
He has staked much of his presidency upon the success of his economic policies. The surprising job numbers also add credence to his optimistic claim that the economy will have a quick V-shaped recovery. It is also an affirmation of his push to reopen the economy to prevent economic stagnation. It is yet another example of Trump’s projections besting the experts in the field. The job numbers are also a victory for bipartisanship. The rapid rehiring is due in part to the success of the Payroll Protection Program, which was the product of bipartisan legislation and presidential leadership. The PPP program ensured that employees remained connected with their employers and were not indefinitely laid off. However, despite the excellent jobs report, unemployment is still at 13.3%. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor and Statistics noted that misclassification of data might have resulted in a numbers error. The real unemployment numbers may
Mattis Turns on Trump
THE IMPACT: President Trump is a
firm believer that a strict law-and-order approach is the best way to bring the current chaotic situation under control. He has been vocally critical of governors who refuse to deploy the National Guard and mayors who fail to use the full range of law enforcement tools at their disposal. He, therefore, threatened to deploy the military to American cities to help quell the unrest. However, many military leaders believe that civil unrest should be dealt with by civilian law enforcement and that it is incorrect to use the military against U.S. citizens except in extreme and dire situations. Trump’s threat of mili-
Grassley Demands Answers on IG Firing THE PULSE: Republican Senator
Chuck Grassley has moved to halt approval of Trump administration nominees until he receives an adequate explanation for the firing of two inspector generals, Steve Linick and Michael Atkinson. To date, he has held up the nomination of Christopher Miller as National Counterterrorism Center director and Marshall Billingslea as undersecretary of state for Arms Control and International Security. The administration sent Grassley a letter from White House Counsel Pat Cipollone attempting to explain the reasons for the dismissals, but Grassley blasted the explanation as inadequate and said it failed to justify the firings. Grassley also pointed out that Linick was very helpful in getting to the bottom of the Clinton email scandal.

THE PULSE: James Mattis, a retired Marine Corps four-star general who formerly served as secretary of defense in the Trump administration, issued a blistering critique of the president’s handling of the George Floyd protests and riots. He said that “Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people — does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort.” Trump hit back by accusing Mattis of being a disgruntled former member of his cabinet who was never in sync with the administration’s policy priorities. However, Mattis received support from Marine General John Kelly, who previously served as chief of staff in the Trump administration. In an interview with former Trump Communications Director Anthony Scarramuci, he said that “I agree” with Jim Mattis. Alaska Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski also expressed support for Mattis and said she was unsure how she would vote in the upcoming presidential election.
tary force and the clearing of protesters from Lafayette Square triggered Mattis’ condemnation. According to news reports, the current chairman of the Joint Chief of Staff, James Milley, engaged in a shouting match with the president over Trump’s plans to send the active military to America’s cities. Milley later released a letter calling upon all military members to adhere to their oath to uphold the Constitution. By the end of the week, President Trump had backed down on his plans, and Defense Secretary Esper ordered troops that had begun to amass outside Washington, D.C., back to their bases in North Carolina.

THE IMPACT: Grassley is an in-
fluential voice in the Senate. He has been a strong advocate for government oversight and was involved in crafting the bills to authorize inspector generals. His outspokenness on this matter may pose potential problems for Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. According to multiple reports, Linick was investigating misuse of government funds by Pompeo at the time of his firing.

The weather’s slowly warming up, and steaming hot mochachinos are giving way to freezing ice pops. But there are only so many freeze pops a mother cares to have her children consume. These chilly treats are perfect afternoon snacks that will keep kids cool and energized as they race around outdoors.

Fruity Pops Cool, colorful, filling, and healthy, too — need more adjectives to be convinced? Makes 8 pops
This is a quick snack to make, limited by your imagination only! It’s as fun to create as it is to eat.
Ingredients 2 cups vanilla or strawberry yogurt Sweetener, if desired
Ingredients
Thinly sliced or diced fruit; good choices are: Peaches
Kiwis
Strawberries
Mango
Yogurt Bark
Pineapple
2 cups yogurt, any flavor Toppings; anything goes, but here’s a list to get your imagination going:
Directions 1. Layer yogurt and fruit in ice pop molds or small disposable containers.
Crushed graham crackers
2. Stick a pop stick into the center (do not push the stick all the way down) and freeze.
Crushed or mini cookies
Variation: Blend desired fruit instead of slicing, and layer with yogurt.
Chocolate chips — any type or color Cereal Sliced or diced fruit
Cookie Pops Yogurt, cookies and freeze pop — all on one stick!
Mini marshmallows Mini chocolate lentils or balls
Makes 8 pops
Drizzled melted chocolate
Ingredients
Chocolate or caramel sauce
2 cups vanilla yogurt
Mini chocolate chip cookies
Chocolate syrup (see note)
Chocolate chips
Directions 1. Layer yogurt, chocolate syrup, cookies and chips in ice pop molds or small disposable containers. 2. Stick a pop stick into the center (do not push stick all the way down) and freeze. Variation: For chocolate pops, combine chocolate syrup with yogurt, and layer as above. Note: To make your own chocolate syrup for these pops, combine 1 tablespoon cocoa, 2 tablespoons sugar, 2 tablespoons hot water, and a pinch of vanilla.
Directions 1. Line a baking pan with plastic wrap. Spread yogurt over plastic in an even layer. 2. Sprinkle with desired toppings, pressing toppings down into yogurt slightly. Freeze. 3. Break into chunks when frozen solid.
Here’s a simple method to minimize the dripping of ice pops: Make a slit in the center of the cover of a small single-use container (item PL4N, available in most groceries). Slip the pop stick through the slit with the cover facing upward, and push cover up until it touches the bottom of the ice pop. You now have a mini plate to catch all those yummy drips.

Any chef will tell you that the fresher the food, the better the taste; think kugel straight out of the oven, or a cinnamon bun, just baked! Now close your eyes and take it one step further. What if you started the kugel, not with potatoes from the store, but with potatoes plucked straight from the ground? Nowadays, thanks to an uptick in urban farming, you can — without ever having to venture out of NYC. Urban farming refers to the practice of growing and producing food and plants in a heavily populated area. Unlike community farms, urban farms are formed with the express purpose of commerce and customer consumption in mind. This means that urban farms are not nearly a way of brightening up a city landscape — they’re actually a functional form of bringing food to your table! Urban agriculture allows consumers to get a full picture of where their food is coming from and how it’s grown. Typically, urban garden goods are sold to nearby restaurants and farmers markets. Additionally, many urban farms overlap with social causes by providing their surplus crop or profits to local community causes. Urban farms are frequently used as educational frameworks, and many were formed to bring fresh goods to low-income areas. While urban farms seem simple enough, in practice, farming (both big and small) requires precise conformity to dozens of laws. Citywide zoning

restrictions, food regulations, rules of commerce, and safety and liability issues often stand in the way of urban farming, and for good reason, too! Producing food that people will eat is a huge responsibility, and urban farming is no exception. Ready to dig? What follows is a sampling of urban farms in our neighborhood. Be sure to check out their visiting hours and enjoy some tasty treats!

Indisputably the largest urban farming network in New York, the Brooklyn Grange operates on select rooftops across NYC. All together, Brooklyn Grange grows over 80,000 pounds of organic produce each year. Since their founding, they’ve sold over 400,000 pounds of vegetables and hosted over 50,000 students for a range of summer workshops, school trips and after-school learning programs — using no more than three rooftops, total!

The Youth Farm As its name implies, the Youth Farm was created to provide New York’s youth with opportunities to explore the food system hands-on, and to help them acquire skills and knowledge relating to the production of organic goods. The farm grows both food and flowers, and offers numerous immersive experiences for kids and adults looking to engage in farming up close. Visitors to the farm can partake in composting, seed starting, irrigation, building projects, harvests, weeding and more.

Located at the southern tip of Manhattan is the Battery Urban Farm. Like the Youth Farm, the Battery Urban Farm was founded with education in mind. The farm features more than 100 varieties of veggies, fruits, flowers and edible medicinal plants. The farm is turkey-shaped in honor of Zelda, a wild turkey that keeps farm visitors company as they plant and harvest. While the farm primarily caters to schools and organized groups, it services private visitors, as well.

Oko Farms
Aside from growing herbs and vegetables, Oko Farms has the proud distinction of being NYC’s only outdoor aquaponic farm. Aquaponics refers to the joint ecosystem created when fish are raised in conjunction with growing plants. Fish excrete toxic chemicals into their surrounding water. The water is then fed to the farm’s plants, which serve to convert the wastes into nutrients. The cleaned water is then moved back into the Note: Oko Farms is fish tanks, and so the system continues. In this way, the farm is able to currently undergocultivate both freshwater fish and vegetables, conserving water all the ing construction and while. no tours are available at their present location. RIVERPARK FARMS 450 E. 29th Street New York, NY 10016 212-729-9790
Chef Tom Colicchio likes to serve his food fresh — and not just fresh, but super fresh! Together with his restaurant’s executive chef and dedicated farm manager, Colicchio oversees more than 15,000 square feet of growing produce… in milk crates! Yes, you read that right. Riverpark’s unique setup enables the farm to be easily transported, and this came in handy when the farm was forced to relocate in 2012. At the time, over 7,000 milk crates of planted goods were moved in the short span of 24 hours. Nowadays, Tom invites his restaurant guests to check out how their food grows before serving it up on a plate.
Note: Riverpark Farms is open to visitors, but is operated in conjunction with the nonkosher restaurants it services.

When Shuey’s mother contacted The Boro Park View to share her story, we knew it was one that we had to publish. It is a precautionary tale that every person needs to hear to help them protect their loved ones. Here is her story: Have you ever seen a child, so typical in every way, become everything a mother dreads? That’s what happened to my Shuey. He’d been a joy-giving, activity-seeking, (sometimes trouble-making) inquisitive eleven-year-old who loved life. And then, over the course of time, the light disappeared from his eyes. “Mommy, I just don’t have koach,” he’d whisper as he shlepped himself across the kitchen floor, head hanging low, eyes half shut. “I can’t go to cheder today.” I’d try to encourage him, but he’d just dissolve into a puddle of tears, feeling guilty that he couldn’t push himself to get dressed and make it through the day. Of course, seeing him act so unlike himself, I’d let him head back to bed — wondering if I was just giving in to a behavioral issue. As the days stretched into weeks of weakness, we began to investigate and quickly became regulars at the doctor’s

office. Shuey was pricked and prodded multiple times, the doctor trying to find the source of his symptoms, which ranged from severe headaches to stomach pains to general malaise. But each time the tests came back
My neighbor leaned in and her voice dropped to a whisper. “And then, as time progressed, it started affecting her emotionally. Everything became very hard for her. She couldn’t handle the slightest stress. Worse yet,
definite possibility,” the physician told me as he examined Shuey. “Let’s run some testing and see what turns up.” A few days later the phone rang, the specialist’s number displayed on the ID. My heart lurched as I grabbed for the phone, scared, anxious — and hopeful. “So we have the results,” the physician said. “It’s not Lyme disease. But your child is very ill.” He paused and then pronounced the verdict. “Shuey has Rocky Mountain spotted fever.”

more or less normal. But Shuey was not “normal.” He wasn’t normal for himself, nor was he normal for a boy his age. I knew, deep down, that something was wrong. Very wrong. “I really think you should test him for Lyme disease,” my well-meaning neighbor told me one day when she noticed my very pale son lethargically sprawled on a lawn chair while his brothers and sisters played all around him. “We’ve tested for Lyme already,” I answered. “It came back negative.” “But this reminds me so much of my teenage cousin. She was also constantly exhausted, pale, in pain…”

she started behaving… odd. She began acting out of character; so badly that she was almost institutionalized.” I gulped, my body flooding with fear. “My aunt kept looking, searching for the cause of my cousin’s illness. She ended up going to someone who specializes in Lyme; he was able to catch it even when other doctors missed it.” “Go,” she said. “Just go.” So I went. “Are you here for Lyme disease testing?” the secretary asked me. When I replied in the affirmative, she handed me a questionnaire that I filled out. As I read down the list of 40 questions regarding symptoms, my eyes filled with tears. I was able to check off almost every box. “Over 20 symptoms suggest that a tick-borne illness is a
The name is a misnomer; Rocky Mountain spotted fever is found all over the United States — even here in our own state. And the sobering news is that recent years have seen a dramatic rise in tick-borne illnesses, and if the trends continue, things will only get worse from here. Here’s what you need to know about Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Rocky Mountain spotted fever wasn’t high on physicians’ radars in previous years due to its low prevalence in New York. With the current drastic rise in infections, however, medical personnel are being encouraged to keep the possibility of infection at the top of their list. To this end, the CDC has begun offering a Rocky Mountain spotted fever training program for medical personnel. The concern with Rocky Mountain spotted fever is that an acute presentation of the infection can quickly become fatal. Symptoms usually appear within two to nine days of a bite from an infected tick, and once the symptoms appear, they come hard and fast.
My heart lurched as I grabbed for the phone, scared, anxious — and hopeful.
Sudden fever is usually the first symptom, with severe headaches a common complaint. (Children report headaches less frequently than adults.) There can also be muscle pain, stomachaches, and lack of appetite — all of which can mimic flu-like illnesses. These non-specific symptoms can be confusing to diagnosticians, running the risk of their missing an early detection of the disease, which can prove fatal. Beginning antibiotic treatment within the first five days significantly increases the chances of survival; after that, the effectiveness of antibiotic treatment for acute infection diminishes. While many physicians are trained to look for the trademark “spotted rash” that gives the illness its name, that rash (if it even appears) usually only appears around the sixth day — well after the time when it is imperative for patients to have begun treatment. Even if a patient survives an acute infection despite late treatment, serious damage to the blood vessels, which are drastically affected by the bacteria, can occur, and may even result in limb amputation due to the onset of gangrene. An untreated acute infection can quickly lead to sepsis and septic shock — neither of which we want our loved ones to develop. Children are particularly at risk for Rocky Mountain spotted fever, with the five-to-nine age range being the most often affected. Unlike acute infections, chronic infections cause a slower breakdown of the body, causing a person to feel generally unwell for extended periods of time.
SO WHAT TO DO? There are a few things we can do to hopefully prevent this horrific disease from affecting our family members: • Wearing long sleeves and long pants helps to protect the skin when in grassy/brush-filled areas that may harbor ticks. • Individuals should be inspected head to toe, and bathed, after outside play in grassy areas. • Consider using insect repellent on clothing. • Lawns should be well maintained, with short grass and well-trimmed shrubbery.
• Don’t invite deer into your yard with salt licks or the like; they bring ticks! • Consider raising a few tickeating chickens… (You’ll also get the added bonus of keeping your kids entertained with their feathered friends!) • If a tick is found, grasp it as close to the skin as possible with a pair of tweezers, and pull it out using a firm, steady movement. Save the tick for testing!
COMMON SYMPTOMS OF ROCKY MOUNTAIN SPOTTED FEVER Early (1–4 Days) • High fever • Severe headache • Malaise (general ill feeling) • Myalgia (muscle aches) • Edema (swelling) around eyes and on the back of hands • Gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, lack of appetite)
Late (5 Days and Beyond) • Altered mental status, confusion, out-of-character behavior, loss of consciousness • Difficulty breathing • Severe skin discoloration • Scant urine output • Low blood pressure Note: Other unusual symptoms can also occur, indicating multisystem organ failure.
RASH • Early forms of the rash (that may or may not appear) can be seen as small, flat, pink, nonitchy spots that begin on the hands and feet and spread inward. • Later forms of the rash appear as red or purple spots and are seen as progression toward severe disease.

INTERVIEW WITH THE EXPERT
LEON KOHANBASH F amil y Prac t i t ioner
Specializing in Lyme and coinfection
Leon Kohandbash, FNP, has become the go-to person for the heimishe community for complicated and chronic tick-borne illnesses. Many of his patients even travel to Brooklyn from Rockland and Orange counties to avail themselves of his expertise. One of his patients was “Shuey” in our article, who is now, baruch Hashem, on the mend. This highly acclaimed family practitioner was kind enough to give of his time to share his knowledge with our readers. How prevalent is Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the New York area? Is it becoming more common? The numbers the CDC gave us showed that there were 495 diagnoses of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in America in the year 2000, a number that rose to over 7,000 cases last year. But this data isn’t very accurate. I believe that there are many more cases that have gone undiagnosed, either because the patient didn’t go to the doctor when confronted with symptoms, or because the examining physician didn’t do the correct testing. How many patients with Rocky Mountain spotted fever do you typically see per season? I see almost 20 patients per day who are diagnosed with any one of the many tick-borne illnesses, not just Rocky Mountain spotted fever.
82 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / June 10, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Lyme disease seems to be the most common, but there are quite a few tick-borne illnesses that are seen in New York State. It is possible for a single tick to transmit more than one type of infectious disease, so I test for all of the infections that are commonly found in our area. I don’t really see acutely affected patients, as they are typically from upstate and do testing there. These patients usually get correctly diagnosed because the severity of their symptoms leads to blood testing. However, even when the diagnosis is correct, many doctors often prescribe a very mild treatment that doesn’t fully cure the illness. Many of those patients end up coming to me for correct treatment. Then there are the patients whom physicians have difficulty diagnosing. Take, for instance, a young person who has been previously healthy and begins to have muscle pains, headaches and extreme fatigue. They become chronically ill, with no known cause. These patients will often
be sent to me, and many times testing will indicate that they have a tick-borne illness. Is there any specific symptom that seems to indicate Rocky Mountain spotted fever? Yes. People need to be aware that the most common symptoms are fever, vomiting, headache and muscle pain. Many people believe they’ve come down with the flu. If someone experiences flu-like symptoms during the summer, then that is a significant indication of a tick-borne infection; the flu isn’t typically contracted during the summer, but ticks are very active. The classic symptom of Rocky Mountain spotted fever is, of course, the spotted rash — but 20% to 50% of people don’t even develop the symptom. And when they do, it appears five or six days after the fever begins, at which point they are already very ill. Treatment should not be dependent upon appearance of the rash. In what way do your treatment methods differ from other doctors’ methods? The patients who come to me don’t have fever; they’re the chronic patients who’ve been suffering with head and body aches, fatigue, and other symptoms for a long time. These patients need longer-term treatments than are routinely prescribed. Some of the patients have even done the shorter forms of treatments — three or four weeks of antibiotics — but later relapsed, as the treatment wasn’t fully effective. It’s important to understand the nature of rickettsia rickettsii, the bacteria that causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever. When an infected tick bites someone, bacteria is injected directly into the bloodstream, where it invades and enters the host’s cells, hides out and multiplies. Not all bacteria do this; some can’t live inside of cells. The bacteria also create what’s called a biofilm, like a protective shell, to prevent the medication from doing its job. It’s very difficult to kill off r. rickettsii, and to do so, we have to be able to penetrate the biofilm to kill the bacteria within their hiding spots. My method is to treat the patient using two, sometimes three, antibiotics over the course of several months. The now-famous hydroxychloroquine, as well as grapefruit seed extract, have also proven helpful in killing the bacteria. We change medications periodically, because over the course of time, the effectiveness of the medications declines. Because such strong antibiotics are used for an extended period of time, I put my patients on several complementary vitamins and probiotics. Part of the treatment includes using “biofilm-
busting drugs” to break down the biofilm, giving us access to the bacteria. Stevia, the sugar alternative, as well as serrapeptase and monolaurin, helps break down the biofilm. After several months of treatments with the stronger drugs, the patient will be put on more natural, plant-based treatments. Can a patient who has gone undiagnosed for an extended period of time fully heal, or are lingering medical issues common even after treatment? The majority of patients don’t need to return after completing a full treatment, though there will be some relapses. Is there a message you wish to give over to medical professionals in terms of what to be vigilant about regarding tick-borne diseases? I check the patient’s Immunoglobulin G when ordering blood tests. The CDC only recommends paying attention to IgM, which indicates an active infection. The IgG indicates a past infection or a chronic infection. When a patient has IgG antibodies and they are presenting with chronic symptoms, this shows me that we need to treat the infection aggressively. When the treatment is shorter, at only three or four weeks long, around 50% of the patients relapse, and then future treatments have to be even more aggressive. Longer protocols together with supplements provide a more effective treatment. Is there a message you’d like to share with people who hopefully won’t need your expertise? There are many people who go upstate for the summer, and of course, many who live upstate year-round. They have to make sure to use preventative measures. These can be sprays that discourage ticks from attaching themselves to a person, such as DEET-based sprays, or permethrin, which actually kills ticks. These can be sprayed on clothes and shoes. Checking the skin is also very important. Every evening, after coming in from outside, the full body should be inspected, and the person should shower. Lawn care is also very important. Keep grass cut short and leaves raked. And make barriers to reduce the presence of deer around your home or bungalow. Deer are perfect hosts for ticks, so don’t leave anything around that will invite them in. There are also certain pesticides that can be sprayed once a season on the lawn that kill ticks and reduce the chance of infection by up to 75%.

If you’ve ever experienced picking fresh vegetables, you understand the thrill of plucking that perfect little cucumber or tomato off the plant! There’s something so satisfying about it — even if it’s a once-a-year summer trip to a farm. Now imagine having that in your own little backyard! No backyard? You can plant a mini vegetable garden of tomatoes on any outdoor porch, too! Planting vegetables can be very tedious, and what you’ll need most is a lot of love and patience. Here’s a guide to planting two almost-no-fail vegetables for your very own garden! You can choose to do both, or just one, based on the size of your yard or porch.

SHOPPING Vegetable seedlings, soil and fertilizer can be purchased at your local nursery; speak to a salesperson at the nursery to find out which soil and fertilizer to use for the specific vegetables you’d like to plant and the conditions you’ll be growing your garden in. Seedlings are small new plants. Make sure they are fresh, sturdy and healthy-looking. While you’re at the nursery, you can also do the rest of the shopping for when your seedlings grow into little plants and are ready for Stage 2.
Supplies for Stage 1 • Vegetable seedlings • Potting soil • Small planters with holes at the bottom; 1 per seedling • Plastic tray or plate for each planter
Supplies for Stage 2 • Tomato cages; 1 per seedling in the ground • Strong wooden sticks, about 6 feet tall; 1 per tomato seedling in planters • Trellis for cucumbers (a support for climbing plants) • 5-gallon planters (with holes at the bottom) for a porch garden; 1 per 2 seedlings of the same type • Potting soil • Garden trowel (hand shovel) • Fertilizer • Gardening wire

DRAINAGE It is very important for plants to have proper drainage, which means that each planter needs to have its own draining system so your seedlings and plants don’t get flooded with water. Each planter should have about two to four holes at the bottom through which excess water can drain. Make sure to place the planters on a plate or tray so you don’t have a watery mess dripping down your windowsill!
WATERING Watering your garden will become an important part of your daily routine. It needs to be done early morning, or in the evening (when the sun is no longer out). The amount of water needed is different in each situation and depends on the location and weather. Your goal is to keep the soil damp throughout the day. If the soil is still damp from the day before, it does not need to be watered again. In some cases, watering every second day is enough, and sometimes twice a day might be necessary.
S TA G E 1 :
NURTURING THE SEEDLINGS: 1. Repot the seedlings into small planters that have holes at the bottom by filling the planter halfway with soil. Dig a small hole in the center. 2. Gently remove the seedling from its original container, together with the soil it came in, and place it into the hole. Fill any remaining gaps with soil. 3. Place the planters indoors, on a tray or plate, in a spot that will allow it to get four to six hours of sunlight a day. 4. Seedlings need to be watered once every morning. The soil should remain damp throughout the day. 5. After about four weeks, the seedlings will be ready for replanting outdoors! S TA G E 2 :
TRANSFERRING AND SUPPORTING THE PLANTS: 1. Before transferring the plants, prepare a working space outdoors. You may want to spread a plastic tablecloth on the ground and have all your supplies on hand, as this will be some messy fun! 2. Find a spot in your yard or on your porch that will get four to six hours of sunlight a day. 3. Use tomato cages when planting your garden in the ground. It will help keep the tomato plant’s soft stems from falling when the vegetables start to grow.
4. If you’re planting your garden in a planter, use strong wooden sticks to support the tomato plants instead of the cages. 5. Cucumbers are climbing plants, which means that the stems need something to “hold on to” as they grow. Therefore, they need a gate or trellis to “climb” on.
PLANTING IN THE GROUND: 1. Make sure the ground you are planting in has healthy soil. If not, remove the “dirt” and cover the area with potting soil. 2. Dig holes large enough to hold the full amount of soil in each small planter. The holes should be at least four feet apart; remember to keep each vegetable in its own “section.” 3. Carefully remove each plant from the planter together with its soil, and place each one into one of the holes you dug. 4. Use potting soil to fill the gaps around the plant, and level the soil. 5. Mix some fertilizer into the soil. 6. Pat the soil gently, and check that the plant is sturdy and safe in the ground. 7. Place a tomato cage over each tomato plant, making sure it’s firmly set into the ground. 8. Place the trellis near the cucumber plants, or plant them alongside a gate.
CARING FOR YOUR NEW GARDEN AND TAKING YOUR PICK! For the first few days after replanting, it is normal not to see any growth. Your little plants are confused and trying to get used to their new environment. However, by week seven or eight (three to four weeks after replanting) the vegetables should start to appear! Picking the vegetables in a timely manner is very important. Make sure the veggies are ready before picking, but don’t leave them on the vines too long either.
PLANTING IN LARGE PLANTERS: 1. Fill the planter three-quarters of the way with potting soil 2. Mix in some fertilizer. 3. Dig two holes with a big enough space between them. 4. Carefully remove two tomato plants from their planters, along with the soil, and place one into each hole. 5. Add more potting soil and fertilizer to fill the planter. 6. Insert a wooden stick into the soil next to each stem, and secure the stem to the stick with gardening wire.
CHERRY TOMATOES: When you notice a growth between the main stem and offshoot stems on either side, pinch it off. The reason for this is because no fruit will grow on these stems; they will only steal the nutrients that we want to get to our tomatoes! The tomatoes will start out as tiny flowers. Then, little green tomatoes will appear and slowly turn red. When a tomato is fully red, it’s ready to be picked! Ripe cherry tomatoes will come off the vines very easily. Pick individual fruits on a daily basis for best results.
CUCUMBERS: As your cucumber plants continue growing, you will notice the vines hold on to the trellis. If a vine hangs down, use gardening wire to tie it to the trellis or gate, so when your cukes start growing, the vine won’t break off. First you will see little yellow flowers, and then, slowly, cucumbers will start to grow. As soon as the cucumbers are green, firm to the touch, and reach the size of the variety you intended to grow, go ahead and pick them. Use a scissors or knife to pick the cucumbers, so the vines don’t get damaged. The skin of the cucumbers are prickly, so you may want to wear gloves!
Happy picking! 90 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / June 10, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

another. I recommend that people take a well-rounded high potency multivitamin and we even doubled up at the beginning so the people get more zinc. Vitamins like selenium, Vitamin C and A, among many other nutrients, are vitally important for a healthy robust immune system.
Q: What are some of the ways to build up the immune system? A: That’s a great question! There are many ways to build up the immune system. The most fundamental is to start off with diet and lifestyle. Having a healthy, wellbalanced nourishing diet is fundamental. So is having good quality sleep and enough physical activity.
Q: You say these are the fundamentals, are there any other things you would add? A: Yes, there are many other nutritional supplements that are good for the immune system. It depends a lot on what we’re trying to achieve. Some things are good for prevention and others are important to take at the onset of symptoms. Andrographis, Astragalus, Echinacea, black elderberry, among many others, are potent immune stimulants, if taken early they could really prevent viral replication. For recovery it depends a lot on the symptoms we are treating. Whether it is for fatigue or to help break up mucus in order to help with breathing better and to help reduce inflammation. For some it is to replenish the nutritional deficiencies, so we added some supplements. So really each person who comes to me gets an individualized nutritional approach based on age, symptoms and on their health history and personal goals.
Q: Are there any supplements that you would say is important for the immune system. I’ve heard that many people were recommended to take zinc. What are your thoughts on this? A: Yes absolutely, I like to start up with the fundamentals like Vitamin D which is actually being shown now to be associated with Covid-19. In fact, one study found that of the people who died, 99% of them had deficient vitamin D status, while of the recovered group only 4% were deficient. Beyond that there are other many other nutrients that are great for the immune system. Yes, zinc has been touted for its benefits on immunity but I don’t like to take a narrow focus. That was just one nutrient as many of these nutrients interact with one

Why the red color? Before painting barns was common, early American farmers would treat the wood with a homemade weatherproof paint of lime, skim milk and linseed oil, which hardened and maintained the wood for up to a decade. As the linseed oil would dry, the wood took on a slightly red tinge.
Different barn types THE VERY FIRST BARNS WERE WOODEN. With a loft typically stocked
with hay, these barns were comprised of an awful lot of flammable material and were quick to burn down, causing great losses to farmers. In fact, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which killed over 300 people and scorched 3.3 square miles of city land, was said to have started in a wooden barn. Legend has it that this barn went up in flames after a cow kicked over the lantern; however, it turned out that the tale was fabricated by Michael Ahern, a Chicago Daily Tribune reporter, so he’d have a colorful story to tell in his newspaper.
Following tradition, barns, even those made of different materials, were later painted red. Actually, it’s one part tradition and one part practicality — barn red is the cheapest coat of paint around.
Wooden barns took a long time to build. The best moments on the farm was when the farm community would work together on the two-month-long project of building the barn. Farmers and their families would gather for a lively celebration to mark the beginning of each new barn, an excitement we cannot quite capture in the two-day shipping wait for a Home Depot barn you can order today.
Some insist that the red color was to help the cows out pasturing find their home again at the end of the day. However, cows go by herd instinct and habit, and are actually color blind!
Replacing the timber, notorious for their flammability, METAL BARNS took over the market at the end of the 18th century. As opposed to the wooden structures, steel barns were impermeable to harsh weathers, which would crack and warp the wood. Moreover, they were
98 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / June 10, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
more economically efficient, since color was applied during steel manufacturing, doing away with the worry of frequent repainting. Metal barns also have no need for internal structural support, which maximized storage space. Today we’ve gotten smart: When it comes to dairy farms, solar panels sit on the rooftops of what are today called SMART BARNS and power self-operated dairy productions. Robots bring fresh food throughout the day, and sensor-operated power washers make for a sanitized experience (a cow’s waste can amount to around 30 gallons per day!). There are chips clipped onto each cow to track its milking yield, which gives the farmers more information so they can better attend to each cow’s well-being. Cows especially love the self-activated bristle brush that gives them a full car wash–like experience!
By: Esti Greenfeld
Where have the barns gone? In 1965, 6.8 million farms operated across the U.S., most with at least one barn. Unfortunately, today just around 650,000 barns remain standing. Considering our cultural interest in barns, it is puzzling that no state law prevents them from being torn down or mandates their upkeep. One obvious reason is our government’s laissez-faire attitude in practice: So many barns, yet so few resources to maintain them.
The word barn stems from two old English words: bere for barley (or grain in general) and aern for storage place, as barns were originally used for storing barley and other grains. The British would house their livestock in a BYRE. Horses were kept in STABLES. And the cows would go in the SHIPPON. We Americans, though, went and put them all in the BARN, and then gave each barn a different name. The following are some of the barns that were built on our own soil:
A typical English barn
A bank barn
ENGLISH BARNS were the first to grace our landscapes. The first ones were brought to America along with the first British settlers, and the style continued to be built between the 1600s and 1800s. Also nicknamed “the grandfather of the American barn,” English barns were small, rectangular, and featured an A-frame roof. Most were typically used for storage of barley and other grains.
wheat or hay. When built on flat land, a “bank” — an earthen ramp — would be created to provide that access. Built on tobacco farms, TOBACCO BARNS do not include any specific architectural features other than a ventilation system for the tobacco leaves stored inside. (It is worthwhile to mention that most tobacco barns are
black, originally to aid in the curing of the tobacco, and later they were painted so just as a fashion statement: I don’t own a White House, but I can always have a black one!) After harvesting the tobacco crops, farmers would hang the leaves in the barn and open the vents to start the process of curing — a necessary step in preserving the leaves. PRAIRIE BARNS, synonymous to WESTERN BARNS, house very large
BANK BARNS, no cash involved. These
rectangular two-storied structures were common in the Midwest. The upper level provided storage and the lower housed livestock, and when built on a hill, both entrances were on ground level. This design permitted direct access to the storage area for farmers and their wagons loaded with

herds of cattle, which require great quantities of feed and hay. The roofs of these structures are quite high and traditionally hang down very low, almost reaching the ground, thus giving ample room to store the feed for the barn’s numerous livestock.
