YHS HEALTHSMARTS SERIES
WEEK 01 // SPOTLIGHT: LYMPHATIC + DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
Lymphatic System As your first line of defense against disease, your lymphatic system plays a key role transporting and removing your body’s toxins, waste, and debris in a healthy, balanced way. A healthy lymphatic system is also responsible for reducing inflammation and fluid retention, increasing circulation, and boosting the immune system with the White Blood Cells that defend you against germs and viruses. Feeling unbalanced? If your lymphatic system isn’t working right, we recommend Balancer-Pro Lymphatic Drainage treatment. This relaxing treatment will stimulate your Lymph and help you regain your health today while also slimming you down and contouring your figure.
Digestive System / Colon A healthy, strong colon eliminates waste and toxins every day to help your body foster healthy bacteria and absorb vitamins and minerals. A balanced colon has no blockages or build-up , and ensures toxins, viruses, and bacteria are quickly removed from circulation. Feeling blocked up? If your colon is congested, you may experience vitamin deficiency or a buildup of toxins throughout the body. We recommend a high-quality colonic irrigation treatment to naturally cleanse and fortify your colon - and improve your overall immunity.
WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR BODY’S NATURAL IMMUNITY AND WELLNESS?
Call our InfoLine 718.808.9696 for short, informative lectures by Mrs. Teitelbum, Certified Naturopathatic Practitioner

NOT A NEW NORMAL Dear Klal Yisroel, We are neither in the medical field nor first responders, yet we feel that we, too, have been on the front lines during COVID-19, serving Klal Yisroel with their technological needs. People needed more devices, more phones, more home internet access, yet they made sure to maintain their standards in technology. We’ve been privy to the most heartwarming scenes, where people have made the effort to participate in drive-thrus, drop-offs, or wait on long (socially distanced) lines. We’ve seen how people refused to take home devices that weren’t properly filtered. All of that was so heartwarming, and we did our best to meet the demand. But now that some time has gone by, we’re hearing about the fallouts. Countless parents and mechanchim have shared their pain with us about what the new reality has done to their children — and to themselves. There is so much pain. So, so much pain. We’ve heard from parents who thought their devices were well protected — and found out too late that it wasn’t filtered on the level that they thought. Some parents are, in retrospect, wondering if their child did, in fact, need access to a specific site, app or device. We’ve heard from mechanchim whose students had confided in them about how they have used technology. We’ve heard from teenagers who can never unsee what they’ve seen. The fallouts are real. And tragic. Very, very tragic. It’ll take an enormous amount of time, money and effort to help our affected children get back onto the derech hakodesh, to the level that they were on before the pandemic. Our hope, with this letter, is to bring awareness and prevent additional suffering. The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. Please email comments@thebpview.com.

INBOX We are begging all of you: If you have made concessions during COVID-19 due to necessity, don’t hold on to it as a “new normal.” If you cannot let go of your “new normal” yet, make an ironclad kabbalah to go back to your careful standards and values as soon as you can. As the pandemic continues to slow down, keep reevaluating your family’s needs. Let us not wait until the repercussions are too difficult to deal with. Let us make all the effort to protect ourselves and our children. May all cholei Yisroel be zoche to a refuah sheleimah, and may we all have a safe and healthy summer. Respectfully, TAG Staff and Volunteers
KEEPING PESTS OUT (Re: Inbox, Issue 39) As an avid gardener of both plants and vegetables, I can assure you that only one thing will keep those squirrels and deer away, and that’s a galvanized chicken wire fence completely enclosing your planting area. Squirrels love to root into plants and dig them up, while deer will eat just about any growing thing. My rosebush was blooming one day and bloomless the next. I had a beautiful border of hosta, which was totally devoured overnight. I tried deer-repellent spray, deer-repellent stations, capsules, sheitel hair, garlic and whatnot. Don’t waste your money. I finally gave up planting impatiens around my trees and poked plastic flowers into the ground. They bloom year-round. As for my vegetable garden, it is now fully enclosed in a six-foot-tall wire fence and thriving. I also put wiring around my porch plant pots, and though I’ve seen squirrels try to reach the plant, it seems not to be worth their effort. R.S.
I saw the letter in the Inbox asking about squirrels, and I’d love to share a solution that works. I have tomato plants and pepper plants, and squirrels used to check them out all the time. Finally, my neighbor suggested that I sprinkle cayenne pepper all around the plants, and that got the squirrels to run away fast. Now my plants are thriving, and squirrels don’t come close anymore. GOT MILK? (Re: Inbox, Issue 39) A letter-writer requested tips and ideas that use milk. I’d like to share how I get a week’s worth of homemade Greek yogurt out of one small container of yogurt and a bottle of milk: Boil almost a whole (half-gallon) bottle of milk until it reaches 180°. Close the flame, and allow it to cool to 110°. Pour one plain Greek yogurt into a bowl. Add the cooled
44 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / June 24, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
milk to cover the yogurt, and blend until smooth. Then pour in the rest of the cooled milk and stir well until a smooth mixture is formed. Cover the bowl with a lid, wrap it in a blanket, and place the bowl in a cool, closed oven for between 20 and 24 hours. Then refrigerate the yogurt for eight hours — and enjoy! Serve with blueberries, granola, or any desired topping, and a sprinkle of sugar or Splenda for added goodness. S.C.
I’m responding to the reader who asked for ideas of what to do with so much milk. I have two ideas for her. First, my mother started cooking macaroni in milk instead of water, and she can do the same! The macaroni absorbs the milk, making it extra smooth and delicious! My classmate shared another fun idea: She puts milk and sugar into a Ziploc bag. She then puts the sealed bag into a larger Ziploc bag with ice. Shaking the bag well turns it into delicious ice cream! Alternatively, you can buy an ice cream or yogurt machine that does the mixing for you. Hatzlacha, and enjoy your milchige delights! FROM THE BORO PARK VIEW TO MY COUNTER (Re: Basic Family-Sized Cakes, Issue 32) I would like to express my thanks for your great recipe section. When you presented four delicious cake recipes, I couldn’t resist and got straight to work. The recipes required simple ingredients, which we mostly had at home, and before long there were four yummy-tasting cakes on my counter, ready to eat! Dear readers, take out your Bosch machine and start baking! Each of these cakes is easy to make and delicious, one by one! Voted best in our house was the grated chocolate cake. Thank you so much. PEPPER CAUTION Since many local residents are receiving lots of mini peppers from food programs these days, I wanted to make people aware that peppers — even those that look nice and fresh from the outside — are often loaded with insects. I myself have soaked a whole bunch of them in soap and water for 24 hours after cutting them open, and there were still lots of tiny black insects inside and around the tops of the peppers. Each one needed to be rubbed by hand even after being soaked. The black dots that are part of the pepper’s skin are usually not a problem; only those black specks that are stuck on the pepper, either inside or outside, are often tola’im that are forbidden to eat. “Kol hamekayem es haTorah mei’oni sofo l’kaymah mei’osher, v’chal hamevatel es haTorah mei’oisher sofo l’vatlah mei’oni — All who fulfill the Torah when they are poor will merit to fulfill it out of a state of wealth, and all who disregard the Torah even when they are rich will end up doing so in poverty.” If someone serves Hashem when he is poor, which is extra hard, Hashem will send him riches, while if someone fails to appreciate his blessing of riches and squanders the opportunity it gives him to acquire Torah, he is not deserving of this bounty, so Hashem removes it from him. The following story perfectly demonstrates the words of this mishnah. There was a wealthy Yid by the name of Reb Zalman. He was a big baal tzedakah and an ehrliche Yid who used his riches for righteous things. In the same shtetl lived a pauper, Reb Moshe, a very pious Yid who lived in poverty. One Erev Yom Kippur, Reb Moshe came home to his wife and children who were starving and were expecting him to bring some food. Seeing him walk in empty-handed, his wife flew into a rage and threw him out of the house. Dejected and hungry, he walked to shul for Kol Nidrei and arrived in his shabby weekday clothes. Reb Zalman the gvir sat there looking ready to greet the King with a full stomach and a sack full of mitzvos. He had spent the day distributing tzedakah; he’d had guests at his seudah — what better way to prepare for this holy day? Broken, Reb Moshe went over to Reb Zalman and asked him for a bit of snuff with which to
refresh himself. “A shmek tabik? Reb Zalman exclaimed. “You haven’t got anything better to ask of me before Yom Kippur than a shmek tabik? Humiliated, Reb Moshe turned away and cried silently to Hashem. “I have no house; my wife threw me out. And I have no money, no food and no Shabbos clothes. Now even a shmek tabik You couldn’t give me? He cried hard throughout Yom Kippur, and when it came to Motzei Yom Tov, he began heading home, shoulders hunched, unsure of what to expect. Suddenly he bumped into his relative, who noticed how sad Reb Moshe looked and inquired whether everything was all right. After Reb Moshe shared his plight, the relative pulled out 300 rubles, which was a large sum of money, and urged him to try his hand at a parnassah one more time. “Go to the market, buy some merchandise, sell it and see how it goes. And this time, to his utter surprise, Reb Moshe succeeded in business. Over the next few months, he brought in a sizeable income, and before long he became well-to-do and was soon the go-to baal tzedakah in town. Meanwhile, business for Reb Zalman was failing. First he thought that it was just a hitch and that he’d get over it, but things only deteriorated. In no time, he was a virtual schnorrer. Suddenly it hit him that it was uncanny that the pauper of the town struck gold, while he now filled those tattered shoes. He went to the heilige Berditchever and unburdened the strange story of how his fortune appeared to have been granted to the pauper of town. “Is there anything between you and the poor man? the Rebbe asked. “There must be some connection if your mazel seems to have been swapped with his. Suddenly, the story of the tabik came to mind. And Reb Zalman told the Rebbe about the incident. “There’s nothing I can do to help you, the Rebbe declared. “In this shtetl, Hashem needed a gvir and a pauper, and by using your power of riches in an unkind way and hurting the poor Yid, Hashem swapped your mazel with his. Vechol hamevatel es haTorah mei’osher sofo levatloh mei’oni.
Reb Moshe seemed a better candidate. “Please help me, Rebbe, Reb Zalman begged. “What can I do? “Listen, said the Rebbe. “If you can find an opportunity for Reb Moshe to do to you what you did to him — that you ask him for tabik and he refuses the request — you will get your riches back. Reb Zalman traveled home, and he soon lost the roof over his head; his family was now on the streets. A few years passed, and Reb Moshe’s children, who were grown and entering shidduchim, were now desirable prospects, given their father’s combined wealth and piety. His son became engaged to the daughter of the rav of the shtetl. Right before the chuppah, which the whole town came
Suddenly it hit him that it was uncanny that the pauper of the town struck gold, while he NOW FILLED those tattered shoes. out to attend, the rav asked his mechutan Reb Moshe for the kesubah. Reb Moshe put his hand into his pocket to remove it, when suddenly, from among the audience, a hunched Reb Zalman leaped forward toward them. “Reb Moshe, he cried, “can you give me a shmek tabik, please? Reb Zalman didn’t doubt that this would be payback time and his fortune would be reversed. But the gentle, ehrliche Reb Moshe didn’t hesitate. “Sure, he said, slipping the kesubah back into his pocket and sneaking some wads of cash into his palm to hand over along with the tin of tabik. Reb Zalman fainted. He had waited years for such an opportunity, and now it disappeared in a puff of smoke. They rushed him to a nearby room to revive him, and Reb Moshe the mechutan went along and asked Reb Zalman why he fainted. Reb Zalman told him his story and how he had now lost his last chance to reclaim his riches. “Reb Zalman, he said, “now is a time of joy. Come join in my simcha for this week, and as soon as the sheva brachos are over, I will come with you to the Berditchever to ask him to poel for you to get your money back. I do not want riches on your cheshbon.

True to his word, once the sheva brachos were over, they went to the Rebbe. “I’m prepared to live like a pauper again,” Reb Moshe told the Rebbe. “Please can you daven that Reb Zalman should get his former mazel back?” But the Rebbe reminded them of the aforementioned mishnah. “Hashem saw that you were the same righteous Reb Moshe now when you are rich as you were when you were poor. He will not take your money away. The only suggestion I can give is that you take Reb Zalman into your business as a partner so you can share your mazel with him.” The humble gvir did that gladly, and Reb Zalman was matzliach once again. The same concept is true spiritually. One who toils in Torah in poverty or hardship will merit to reap the well-deserved nachas from their efforts. The Ketzos, one of the famous Acharonim, wrote a few seforim, the two most popular works being Ketzos HaChoshen and Avnei Meli’im. The first was the more popular of the two. A talmid once asked him why his first sefer turned out much more popular than the second, and the Ketzos explained that he wrote the first one when he was young and lived in a state of dire poverty. It is known that he was so poor he had to keep his inkwell under his cushion at night so it wouldn’t freeze from the cold in his house. Because that sefer was written in such poverty, it came along with much more hatzlacha. Let us not be fazed by challenges, because “l’fum tzaarah agra,” according to the hardship is the value of the reward. Furthermore, Chazal say, “Tov echod b’tzaar mi’meah shelo b’tzaar — One good deed done with a struggle is more valuable than a hundred such deeds carried out without a struggle.”

Playground Wars End on Happy Note as NYC Enters Phase 2 Fed up with the uneven enforcement of regulations, local elected officials took matters into their own hands last week, using bolt cutters to reopen parks in Jewish neighborhoods that had been closed by the city because of the coronavirus outbreak. Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, Senator Simcha Felder and City Councilman Kalman Yeger were joined by community activist Heshy Tischler as chains were broken at multiple playgrounds where police officers had repeatedly chased mothers and children away from their beloved slides and swings. The chain cuttings came on the heels of the state’s decision to ban sleepaway camp because of their inability to safely maintain social distancing, while simultaneously allowing mass demonstrations to protest George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis at the hands of police officers. A joint statement released by Eichenstein, Felder and Yeger on June 16 slammed Mayor Bill de Blasio for turning a deaf ear to the pleas of elected officials, parents and children who have been shut out of playgrounds for weeks. The statement acknowledged a peaceful demonstration that took place last week in Midwood, charging the city with leaving residents “suffering under an inequitable, nonsensical policy.” “The people have spoken, and they are sick and tired of being ignored,” read the statement. “With everything going on in the world, why is our mayor intent on making criminals of mothers and children in need of a safe space to play? If they lock these gates, we will cut them open again tomorrow, because we serve the people. Who do you serve, Mr. Mayor?” Addressing the playground wars during a press conference, de Blasio refused to back down, saying, “We’re not going to allow people to take the law into their own hands. It just doesn’t work. So people are not allowed to open up a playground that is not yet available to the public. It’s for a reason.” But there was good news for parents by Friday, when the mayor announced that the city was headed to phase 2 on Monday, which opened up all city playgrounds, retail stores, barbershops, hair salons, outdoor dining, offices, car dealerships, commercial building management and real estate services, all of which will be subject to limited occupancy and social distancing

regulations. The positive developments continued as the day wore on, with Governor Andrew Cuomo giving his final daily coronavirus briefing, citing record-low infection and
death rates and high testing numbers. Cuomo observed that New York, which initially had the most cases per capita in the world, had done the impossible, turning the tide on COVID-19. “We have done a full 180, from worst to first,” said Cuomo. “We are controlling the virus better than any state in the country and any nation on the globe. Even more, by reducing the infection rate, we saved over 100,000 people from being hospitalized and possibly dying; just think about that. It is an unimaginable achievement. I'm so incredibly proud of what we all did together, and as a community. We reopened the economy and we saved lives. Because it was never a choice between one or the other — it was always right to do both.” The governor warned that the battle against COVID-19 is far from over, noting that infections coming from out of state and a second wave make it crucial for everyone to remain vigilant against a potential resurgence, emphasizing yet again the importance of wearing masks to keep the virus at bay. Cuomo said he would continue to provide coronavirus updates, albeit on a less frequent basis than the daily format of the last few months, which had drawn 59 million viewers. Describing the past 111 days as a whirlwind of emotion, the governor said that the unity and positivity that helped New York emerge victorious from the outbreak are the messages that will be inspiring him for the days and weeks ahead. “If we could accomplish together what we did here, this impossible task of beating back this deadly virus, then there is nothing we can't do,” said Cuomo. “We will be better and we will be stronger for what we have gone through. It shows us how capable we are when we are at our best. It shows us that we have great potential to do even more, and we will.” While progress has been continuing, things are still inching their way forward very slowly. The state’s guidelines limiting the size of gatherings remain at ten people in New York City, only rising to twenty-five in phase 3, which could begin on July 6. Also scheduled for phase 3 are indoor restaurant dining, albeit at 50% capacity and with tables spaced six feet apart, and the opening of nail salons, with similar social distancing requirements in place. Cuomo made it clear that he expected local governments to enforce the rules of every phase, warning that businesses that aren’t in compliance could face immediate shutdown orders. “The numbers are good because we’re doing what we are supposed to do, and we have to keep doing what we’re supposed to do,” said Cuomo, adding, “When people follow the rules, the infection rate stays down. That’s called good news. But local governments have to do their part.” While the only mall stores that have opened so far in New York are those that open directly to the outdoors, across the Hudson in New Jersey, shopping malls have finally reopened. Communal seating areas, valet parking, vending machines, stroller rentals, fitness centers, amusement parks and play areas remain off limits for now, but all retail stores will be allowed to open, with customers ages two and up required to wear face masks, and the number of shoppers limited to just half of the regular allowed capacity. “Malls are an undeniable part of New Jersey culture, and we want these businesses to get back up and running in a safe, responsible manner,” said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. “To keep our restart moving in the right direction, we ask New Jerseyans who wish to head out to the mall or any public setting to do so safely.”
OP-ED:
Why Government Ignores the Jewish Community With members of the Jewish community feeling marginalized by recent developments, including the extended playground closures and the recent shuttering of sleepaway camps, Boro Park resident Ezra Friedlander said that we have only ourselves to blame for the ongoing apathy shown by elected officials. Friedlander, CEO of The Friedlander Group, explained that elected officials respond best to demographic groups that vote in large numbers, empowering those communities and responding to their needs. With the Jewish community responding in relatively small numbers during elections, and with few being registered as Democrats because of the party’s progressive platform, Jewish voters have even less of a voice in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans by a margin of eight to one. “By registering as Republicans, we have essentially opted out of the system,” explained Friedlander. “We may be making a statement of standing on principle, but in the end, we have abdicated our voice in the conversation. Elected officials are essentially politicians. Their goal is to get elected, and when they win, they pay attention to who voted for them.” Boro Park’s population of 25,000 Jewish families translates roughly into 50,000 votes, giving the local community the potential to swing an election — and that position could be leveraged to further Jewish causes, said Friedlander. Instead, by not voting, or refusing to register for the party that currently dominates the city, the community is throwing away a priceless opportunity that could yield tremendous benefits. “Other communities are voting, you can be sure of that,” observed Friedlander. “Our absence in the voting booth essentially empowers them further. We are relinquishing our constitutional rights and handing them over on a silver platter, thereby greatly diminishing our clout. All because we stubbornly insist on clinging to principles that hold no practical purpose.”

CHA P T ER FORT Y Recap: Miri visits Tzippy at home, where she is confronted with Tzippy’s empty fridge and the shocking truth that Tzippy has never received a stipend from Korman and that she and her husband are living on practically nothing. The sisters have a heart-to-heart talk in which they discuss how their parents, who never had money either, managed to raise a happy family. Miri, suddenly feeling rich, offers to help Tzippy find a job. When Binyamin walked into the house with his bag of laundry on Motzei Shabbos, he was greeted with upbeat music. “Sorry,” he said with a tired smile. “I thought this was my house.” “It’s always happy here!” his sister Chani said, waiting ready with her camera. “But there isn’t usually so much noise here. Can you lower the music a little?” “Mishenichnas Adar marbin b’simcha!” five-anda-half-year-old Shloimy said knowingly. “And besides, don’t you know we’re moving? Right after Purim!” “He knows,” Esty said. “I know,” Binyamin said at the exact same time. He sat down on a chair. “Of course I know!” “Oh, so Tatty and Mommy told you?” Fouryear-old Bentzy nodded understandingly. Binyamin laughed. “And if they wouldn’t have told me, my friends would have updated me. Almost all of Bnei Brak knows about it!” “Yes, and it’s a little… uncomfortable to be the subject of people’s stories…” Devorah spoke up. “Do you feel that way, too?” “There certainly is something to what you’re saying.” Binyamin rested a hand on his forehead and raised his eyes to his sister. “Can’t you lower that music? My head is really aching.” Chani and Esty studied him.
“Your head’s been hurting too much lately,” Chani said. “Last Shabbos you had a bad headache, too. What’s the matter? Are you starting to get migraines like Tatty?” “Chas v’shalom,” Devorah said as she lowered the volume. “Give me the camera a minute, Chani. I have to take a picture of Nati — look what he’s doing with Binyamin’s hat!” Binyamin observed his siblings having a field day with his hat, the one he had saved up for during two years of yeshivah bein hazmanim. It had served him loyally for Shabbos for half a year before he got a new one for Tzippy’s wedding, at which point he had turned it into his weekday one. Actually, this one was of a better quality than the new one. His parents hadn’t wanted to take advantage of the Australian philanthropist, so they’d told him to forgo a more expensive hat and buy a standard-quality one instead. But when he’d bought a hat for himself with his own money, he had chosen the best one available. Once upon a time he wouldn’t have allowed his little brothers and sisters to play with that hat, but something inside him had shifted. Maybe it had begun that first night, when he’d gone with Shabsi to learn Mishnayos and had seen the niftar’s worn hat. He had realized then that any hat, no matter how much you invest in it, is a very transient thing.

In that sense, he felt like those nights with Shabsi had been beneficial for him. There was something very educational — more than that, inspirational — about the whole thing, and it had definitely been a learning experience. On the other hand, the damage had quickly exceeded the benefit. His all-nighters had pretty much destroyed his sedarim the next day and had gotten him into a major mess. Maybe the time had come to resolve the issue? Perhaps he could muster up the courage to tell his parents that he had lost something — though he had no idea what exactly the lost item was — and that he had to pay for it. He had a little bit of money saved up from his work with Shabsi. During the upcoming Pesach bein hazmanim he would be able to earn some more, although he knew that his father didn’t really like him running from one shul to the next and learning for the money. But he had this vague feeling that whatever was in the envelope was worth much more than the few hundred shekels that he’d be able to earn on his own. “You know, I think you just haven’t gotten back to yourself since you had the flu,” Devorah suddenly realized. “You’ve been very quiet and serious lately, and whenever you come home… oh, wait, are you just annoyed that Nati is playing with your hat? Okay, enough, we’ll take it from him.” “It’s fine,” Binyamin mumbled. “He’s not smashing it, so let him have a few more minutes of fun. Where are Tatty and Mommy?” “They left right after Havdalah to some lawyer for the new apartment,” Esty said. “Mommy asked that you should put the little kids to bed, Devorah.” “Thank you, my dear secretary,” Devorah replied. She looked around. “So let’s see who’s going to be the fastest one today… I think it’s going to be Yitzy. No, maybe Bentzy? I can’t guess. What do you say, Binyamin?” “Maybe everyone together?” Binyamin joined the game and hurried to volunteer his services. “I’ll make the beds in the dining room.” Working together, it took them less than a halfhour to get all the kids into bed. Something about the cheerful atmosphere helped Binyamin recover from his headache, at least somewhat. And then his parents came home. “Binyamin, how are you?” Elisheva was happy to see her son. “Did you bring home your laundry? Great. Come, let me get you something warm to drink.” The adults crowded into the kitchen. “So are we really moving in a week and a half, right after Purim?” Binyamin graciously accepted the cup of coffee his mother had prepared for him. “A little later, after rosh chodesh. In the meantime, we’ll try,” his father glanced around, “to find a renter for this apartment.” “Oh, you’re going to rent it out?” Binyamin asked. “Yes. It’s in a good location, and it could be a good

income every month. It’s an asset that’s not worth selling.” “Then maybe Mommy won’t need to work?” Chani asked excitedly. “And is it true that Zeidy is going to sell his tiny apartment instead of renting it out, because he won’t need to pay for the old-age home anymore? My friend told me she heard that.” Elisheva’s lips curved into a mirthless smile. She had a strong aversion to involving the children in financial matters, but there were situations in life when it needed to be done, cautiously. “Don’t you think this can cause an ayin hara on us?” Devorah suddenly asked. “Especially after the story with Tzippy… So many people are talking, my friends are asking so many questions, and people are jealous… It’s kind of scary, isn’t it?” * * * * *

“Blumi, what is this money that came in from you to my account?” Beri’s voice was a mixture of surprise, criticism and a frisson of interest. He clearly remembered each of the times he had been stuck and his little sister had bailed him out with a generous transfer from her account to his. But this time there wasn’t any special reason. True, Blumi and Gideon were probably worth thirty times as much as he was, but as long as he didn’t have a specific problem for which he needed a loan, he had no interest in receiving money for no reason. “Is it a mistake?” “No.” Blumi sighed. “It’s not a mistake.” “So what is it? A birthday present?” “Oh, I completely forgot the date!” Blumi was pacing up and down the house with her phone. “I’m really sorry, Beri. How could I have forgotten, especially this year?” “I can’t get gifts this year anyway, in case you forgot. But what is this money all about?” “It doesn’t matter.” Blumi shook her head. “I sent money to the others also, not only to you, if that makes you feel better.” “Maybe it makes me feel better, but it also makes me more curious.” “So overcome your curiosity,” his little sister retorted, a bit sharply. “Isn’t that what you always tell me?” Beri laughed shortly. “Nu, come on!” “Shmuel is beeping in. Ugh, can’t I deposit a few dollars into my brothers’ accounts without you going nuts? It’s another thing if I would be withdrawing money!” “What is this money, Blumi?” Beri was insistent. “It’s for the silver yad.” “The one that disappeared?” “Yes.” “I don’t understand. What’s the story with it?” “It disappeared, and it’s my fault, so I’m paying for it. If we find it, then it will be mine.”

ON THE LIST?
Beri was silent for a long moment; in the silence they could both clearly hear Shmuel beeping in again and again. And Shmuel will ask how I was able to estimate the value of the yad, Blumi mused to herself. Each one with his questions. I know my brothers well. Now Beri is going to want to know— “What do you mean it’s your fault that it disappeared?” “It doesn’t matter,” Blumi replied. “What does that mean? It does matter. Maybe you’re blaming yourself for no reason!” “I’m not blaming myself for no reason, and I don’t want to say how it’s my fault.” She was being stubborn, like a little girl. And I already did everything, Beri, before I decided to pay you a sum that I think is at least one and a half times as much as the yad is worth. She had worked to find out who had arranged for the bachurim to come that night, and learned that it was her brother Shmuel. When she’d asked him who

they were, he’d replied vaguely that he had asked a friend to get hold of some bachurim who do this kind of service. But when she asked her next question, who that friend was, Shmuel started to become suspicious, but he’d given her the friend’s name. Blumi had mustered up the courage to call Shmuel’s friend, and after a long, convoluted story about bachurim who had learned Mishnayos for her family, and whom she now needed to contact about something, the friend had answered that he didn’t know exactly who they had been. Apparently, he’d called a few numbers that night until he found someone who could come. She’d asked for those numbers, and had received two of them. But neither turned out to be the one she’d been looking for. And she had no more nerve to call Shmuel’s friend again, to ask him to try to get her another one of the numbers that he had called that night. Maybe she should put an ad in the paper: “Seeking bachurim who learned Mishnayos on Monday, 26 Teves, at the Katz home on Ibn Gavriel Street. One of them received a valuable envelope for safekeeping, and disappeared with it.” How would that be for an idea, Beri?

The Pulse: This past week, I sat down for a discussion with Representative Tom Reed (R-NY). Congressman Reed represents New York’s 23rd Congressional District, which includes popular tourist spots such as Watkins Glen, Elmira-Corning and Seneca Lake. Rep. Reed is a founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus. The caucus is composed of 50 members split evenly between Democrats and Republicans. It is a group comprised of members of the House of Representatives who are committed to working across the aisle in a bipartisan fashion to help solve problems that the country is facing. It is “united in the idea that there are common sense solutions to many of the country’s toughest challenges and that only when we work together as Americans can we successfully break through the gridlock of today’s politics.” I am thankful to Rep. Reed for taking time from his busy schedule to discuss his vision and ideas with Political Pulse readers for how America can work together to solve the problems that it faces.

AL: Did your time as Mayor of Corning impact your work in promoting problem-solving bipartisanship in Congress? TR: Sure. When working with the city council, I always found that the best policy was to get away from 30-second soundbites and have a dialogue that you can agree on, because if both sides have common ownership, that is when you are united. If you look at the history of America, it is the time when we are united that we are strongest. It doesn’t mean that I shy away from my philosophy. It doesn’t mean that I am not proud of what I believe in, but I am willing to have a conversation and get through the yelling.

TR: I don’t see it that way. I am a proud Republican. I am a proud fiscal conservative, but I am willing to stay in the room and have a conversation. I know what I believe in, and I know what my positions are, but I am willing to listen. That comes from my mom. My dad died at 48, and my mom raised all twelve of us by herself. She taught me early on that when we treat people with respect, good things will happen. That’s how I try to conduct myself. The Problem Solvers Caucus is an offshoot of that. It is full of members who want to get to “yes” and want to find common ground. We can yell at each other all day long, but if you’re not getting something done, why are you in Congress? We are there to fight the fight and see what we can do to move the needle in a positive way.

one of the first members of Congress to endorse Donald Trump for the presidency. You are an honorary chairman of the president’s reelection committee. Yet, you are also a recipient of the Chamber of Commerce’s JeffersonHamilton Award for bipartisanship. Does working across the aisle make you less of a conservative Republican? Does it compromise your ideological purity?

AL: The Problem Solvers Caucus was founded in 2017. Looking back over the years since its founding, which legislative achievement would you be most proud of? TR: The biggest thing from an institutional perspective is that we reformed the House rules in the last congressional session. At the beginning of Speaker Pelosi’s tenure, we came together as 50 members, Republican and Democrat, to demand that if you have 290 co-sponsors, you are now guaranteed a vote on the floor of the house. That was our rule reform, and it allowed members to be rewarded for working together. We used this new reform to implement things like criminal justice reforms, which was signed into law by President Trump. We fixed a tax penalty that applied to benefits paid to Gold Star widows. We did things like humanitarian aid at the border. We worked together on Israeli issues to make sure that aid continues going to Israel. That

was an Obama commitment, and we worked to carry that through on a bipartisan basis. Many of us, myself included, share a commitment to Israel, and our bond with Israel is strong. We in the Problem Solvers Caucus are proud to come together and stand for the relationship between the U.S. and Israel. AL: Considering the acrimonious nature of our current political climate, are you optimistic that there is a future for bipartisanship and that it will appeal to voters?

TR: Yes, I am. The biggest problem is extremism on both the right and the left. There is an extreme movement in both parties trying to push the parties to the hard right and left. They make ideological purity the test. We can’t have that. We need to have our philosophies on display, be honest with the American people, and try to lead. When you have conversations between left and right and have good-faith people who want to listen to each other, we (tend to) agree on a lot more than we disagree in America. Once we understand each other, it is amazing, as Americans, what unites us. It just takes the hard work of doing it. I am optimistic that that is where the silent majority of America wants us to go. AL: Do you believe that gerrymandering is a leading factor in the election of members that advocate more extreme positions as they need to appeal to primary voters instead of the general electorate? TR: It may contribute to some of this, and it is a problem, but I find that most members of Congress go to Congress to do something. They really want to be there, because they have a passion for serving the country and their constituents. I still have Tea Party support, because I am honest with my voters. Genuineness is the solution to gerrymandering. If a member is only concerned about reelection, then gerrymandering is an issue. Gerrymandering can produce members that are not intellectually committed and are only there for someone to open the door for them and call them “sir” or “ma’am.” We need to get rid of such people in Washington. The more that we can get genuine, good-faith people in D.C., the better the country will respond. AL: The varied responses to the COVID-19 pandemic appear to have deepened the partisan divide. How can elected officials bring the country together to deal with this challenge? TR: Look at what we have done. The three bills that responded to the virus had strong bipartisan support. The vice president asked the Problem Solvers Caucus to come to the situation room when Debbie

Birx had just landed on American soil ten hours earlier. We were the ones asked to go down to the situation room because the vice president and task force knew that when it comes to dealing with an emergency, the country needs to be united on the issues. Partisanship is alive and well in the country. The polarization of the country is real. We have to seize these opportunities to lead, and that is why I am so proud of what we have achieved. We are also inspiring other members. We have a waiting list to join the caucus. You can’t just join the caucus; you have to commit to how we govern and treat each other. Our room in D.C. is the only room where I see members having a level of trust and honesty with each other. It used to be that way, but now our leadership does not know each other. They don’t know each other’s families. They don’t know the type of bond that we in the caucus have. We are trying to change the culture, not just the policy. As we go forward and continue to deal with the virus, we’d better be working together, because when the country is divided, as we see with the social unrest, it is those who can unite the country that can inspire the country to reach a higher level of greatness.

AL: What is your opinion regarding how Governor Cuomo has handled the COVID-19 crisis? Do you agree with his decision to close summer camps in the state? TR: My biggest critique of the governor is that he
is driven by ego. It needs to be “his way or the highway.” When you are in an emergency situation, you really need to listen to people. I believe in the three C’s: communicate, collaborate and coordinate. This is what we did when we responded to the crisis for the district and region, and in my opinion, we did a pretty good job. The governor is more of a show horse than a workhorse. Governors like Larry Hogan (R), Mike DeWine (R), and former Problem Solvers Caucus member Jared Polis (D) rolled up their sleeves and got to work. They didn’t hold press conferences every day. These guys get it, and they know how to lead through a crisis. I am sorry that people in your community feel frustrated by how the governor treated them, and I wish your situation were unique, but it is kind of a pattern of how the governor treats people who disagree with him or challenge him and don’t accept everything that he says. I am of the mindset that you need to be challenged, and as elected officials, you need to have that input — because if you have the input, you may find a solution that can work for both sides. I understand the virus, and that it is a threat, but there is a way to work through this. The governor made a critical mistake in ordering grandparents who tested positive for COVID-19 back to nursing homes, and then tried to blame it on President Trump. est of the people you represent, and you do that by listening and setting the tone. You lead by uniting people through the crisis. AL: I understand that you are critical of the House legislation drafted to deal with the current social unrest. What would you like to see done to address the turmoil and the concerns of the protestors? TR: I was disappointed to see the speaker go down the one-party type of bill approach. I get that she has to deal with the extreme hard-left elements in her party. We went through this with our hard-right division in 2010. I understand the politics of what she did, but I am disappointed that she didn’t seize the opportunity. However, I think that there is still an opportunity here. We in the Problem Solvers Caucus are working with our Senate partners. I believe that the Senate is where the heart of a bipartisan deal will materialize. We will see real reforms that go after the bad actors. There is a moment here. I walked in Black Lives Matter protests. What I saw in Minneapolis was horrific. That officer who had his knee on George Floyd’s neck committed murder and brought his other officers along with him. That is unacceptable. We need to bring about reforms so that these bad actors cannot bounce around from department to department. We need to use the tools of the federal government to reward good actors. What Tim Scott (R-SC) is doing in the Senate is smart, as he is reaching out to the folks on the other
side of the aisle to build a bipartisan consensus. We in the Problem Solvers Caucus had a great conversation with members of the Congressional Black Caucus. There are many good members there like Karen Bass (D-CA) and Jim Clyburn (D-SC). I’ve been to Selma with John Lewis (D-GA), walked on the bridge with him, and spent days reflecting on these issues. I think these individuals are sincere about getting a bill done, but right now, the extremist politics of the Democratic party are forcing them to go down a one-party bill path. However, I think they will still be in the room, and I will be in the room, when we get together on a deal that perhaps the Senate can put together. AL: What can the average citizen do to help create an environment that is conducive to bipartisanship? What can teachers and educators do to help foster such an environment? TR: That is a great question. You have to challenge your-
self, and challenge your students, to see both sides of the equation. We all have our political ideology, but stand in front of a student and say, “I will take an opposite position today even though I don’t agree with it, just so that maybe we can learn from each other in a way that challenges us and puts us in our uncomfortable zone.” Inspire folks to be substantively educated on the issues. If you do that, you will produce Problem Solvers Caucus leaders and people who are committed to respecting each other.
The Impact: No Labels is a groundbreaking organization that partners with the Problem Solvers Caucus. Its mission is to “combat partisan dysfunction in politics and to usher in a new era of focused problem-solving in American politics.” For more information, contact info@nolabels.org. Going forward, Political Pulse plans to run interviews with caucus co-chair Josh Gottheimer (D-NY) and caucus member Max Rose (D-NY). The author of Political Pulse is a member of the No Labels steering committee.

When our daughter Sarala announced she wanted to move into her own apartment with her friends, I wasn’t completely shocked. Already 24, her siblings had married and moved out. And she was bored at night, living with only her parents. The request seemed reasonable. Except that Sarala has special needs. We wanted to be fair to her request, but also realistic. Sarala needs a lot of support. Help with cooking. Help with cleaning. Helpful reminders to brush her hair. What were we to do? SHARE TO THE RESCUE SHARE has created a dorm program where groups of either women or men live together under the staff members’ supervision, and have a rich and independent life. They attend either their day program or have a job with supports. When they come home to their beautiful apartment, they prepare dinner and have activities to do together at night. SUPPORT 24/7 Staff is onsite at all times, so we never have to worry about her safety. Best of all — although they have frequent Shabbatons, she still comes home for most Shabbosim and Yomim Tovim, so we still get to enjoy time together with her. It is the perfect transition. ROOM TO GROW As we age, it had been harder to keep Sarala entertained. Placing her into SHARE’s dorm program was the best decision for both Sarala and our family. Once she and her friends moved in together, they truly matured and thrived. A DREAM COME TRUE Now when she comes home for Shabbos or to visit, she excitedly tells us stories about her friends and her apartment. Sarala now has her own life, completely independent from ours. Isn’t that every parent’s dream for their child?

TO OUR BORO PARK CENTER FAMILY ur father, like every father, was always the strongest person in the world. Until he wasn’t. He was getting older, and we, his children, were watching it happen. This year, he had open-heart surgery. Post-operation, he was barely able to walk more than a few steps. He couldn’t hold a fork. It hurt to see Totty so weak and helpless. After his situation was assessed, we moved him from the hospital to the caring, compassionate staff of Boro Park Center. For those months, you helped him
When the pandemic hit, we were nervous, but you were unflappable. You said, “It’s our job to take care of your father, so we will.” We drove you nuts. (Sorry about that!) We called every day. You picked up every day. We video-called Totty. You held the phone for him. We worried. You reassured us. And you, mothers and fathers and grandparents yourselves–you still came in every day to take care of our father and the other residents in your care. This wasn’t a battle you signed up for, but you stayed on anyway. Your selflessness blows us away every time we think about it.

Centuries before Coney Island became a landmark lovingly rolled off Brooklyners’ tongues, when the Lenape Native Americans were still living the land, they called this little sun-filled island Narrioch — a word that has been attributed the meaning “a land without shadows” for its south-facing beaches that were always in full view of the sun. Verrazzano, who came sweeping by the area in his exploration of the Atlantic coast, was the first European to encounter presentday New York. But his role in its discovery soon faded into the annals of history, and Henry Hudson’s 1609 voyage — with the influence he left all over the area’s waterways — was established as the

de facto start of the exploration of New York. Hudson’s first landing in trying to find his way back to the East? Coney Island, where he found the Canarsie people (the local band of Lenape Native Americans) for whom the island was a spot for fishing and rabbit-hunting. These charming critters were called konijn by the Dutchmen who settled the region, a word that was soon adapted to create the name Coney Island — the island of rabbits. It didn’t take long for the Dutch to establish their presence all over the area, and for the Native American

population to dwindle; in 1645, the southwest section of New Amsterdam, which encompassed present-day Kings County, exchanged hands when a Native American elder sold it to the Dutch for a gun, a blanket and a kettle. Coney Island, with its sunny shores, soon became a remote little place in Gravesend, one of the six townships under the Dutch patent in the Breuckelen settlement. After enjoying a brief emergence from obscurity in 1776, when British troops made their beachhead there, the island was back in its peaceful little corner, a private haven to locals only. But its beach sands glistening in the sunlight and the ebb and flow of the waves of the Atlantic Ocean eventually captured the attention of the public.
tel sprang up on its shores. The Coney Island House, constructed near present-day Sea Gate, beckoned to the upper crust of society, who’d climb into their coaches and travel to the new resort spot. The rich and famous were soon joined at sea by some common folk who’d reach the island first by ferry, and then by railroad. The first railway to reach Coney Island opened in 1864. As access was optimized with additional railways and roads leading to this paradise of sea and land, hoteliers were quick to catch on that Coney Island was fertile ground for their services. From when Peter Tilyou’s Surf House opened in the 1870s — the first establishment to offer lodging, food and beachfront amenities — luxury hotels kept popping up on the shore, and Coney Island’s entertainment business began to burgeon.
AND THE FUN BEGINS! The ease of access quickly turned the seaside resort area into a day-trip hotspot, and restaurants soon dotted
A RIDE TO RESPITE In 1824, the call of the sea reached the ears of Gravesend residents when a bridge connecting the island to the mainland was built across the Jamaica Ditch (the Coney Island Creek of yesteryear), and shell roads leading to its beaches were laid out. coming a hop and skip away in Sheepshead Bay and Brighton Beach. In 1878, George Tilyou, of Surf House fame, had the Iron Tower moved to Coney Island following the Philadelphia Centennial in 1877 for which it was built. At 300 feet tall, it was the tallest structure in the state of New York and offered patrons a ride to the top in one of its two steam-powered elevators, where they could enjoy splendid views of up to 30 miles out. The year 1884 saw the debut of the first American roller coaster when, right in Coney Island, Switchback Railway opened. Riders would climb a tower, board a back-facing vehicle, and were pushed off to coast 600 feet down the track. This five-cent thrill ride, if you’d deign to call it that, traveled at just above six miles per Switchback Railway, the first U.S. roller coaster, debuted on Coney Island.
the area. Coney Island now stepped down from being an upper-class paradise to the middle-class man’s joy. Entrepreneurs kept busy thinking of lucrative entertainment venues that would satisfy the average American’s thrill-seeking without bending them out of shape financially, and the beachfront soon went from being simply a serene natural attraction to the most sought-after U.S. amusement district of its time. Coney Island’s first amusement attraction was the steam-operated Balmer’s Carousel with its hand-carved horses. It opened at the foot of Ocean Parkway in 1875 to keep people coming to Coney Island attractions instead of the competition rumors predicted were Flip-Flap Railway in Sea Lion Park

hour. The ride was such a hit, raking in a whopping amount each day, that it paid for itself in just three weeks — and by the turn of the century, there were hundreds of similar roller coasters across the U.S. In 1894, Tilyou commissioned the construction of a Ferris wheel with twelve cars, each one holding eighteen passengers, which was quick to become Coney Island’s most popular attraction. As the entertainment options grew, Coney Island became known as the Nickel Empire, where for just five cents anyone could treat themselves to a snack or a thrilling escape from the realities of life.
SEA LION PARK In 1895, vivid lighting, spectacular archways and splashes of color adorned the island with the opening of Sea Lion Park, Coney Island’s first — and the world’s first enclosed — amusement park, which was sprawled over sixteen acres. According to Charles Desens (Coney Island Lost and Found), “Customers paid admission to enter the enclosure and ride the Shoot-the-Chutes and the Flip-Flap roller coaster, watch performers, and view trained sea lions in

an artificial lagoon,” a novelty at a time when amusement parks operated as pay-as-you-go concessions. With competition coming fast, its owner opted out of the amusement business, and after just seven years, Sea Lion Park closed down. But its influenced lived on.
STEEPLECHASE — THE FUNNY PLACE In 1897, inspired by Sea Lion, George Tilyou decided to consolidate his standalone rides spread across Coney Island — among them the Ferris wheel and Iron Tower — into one amusement park, which he named Steeplechase Park. The park’s over 50 attractions included jawdropping novelties and simulations from around the world, among them the Human Niagara, Double Dip-Chutes, a steam railroad and scale models of world landmarks. Before long, competition reared its head, and attractions kept being added and upgraded, with in-

sufficient regard for the risks involved. The entrance to Steeplechase soon had a barrel-like ride in which riders would enter a revolving drum to be thrown at each other, and a number of other attractions also tossed riders around, causing them to fall together in a heap. In 1907, a fire destroyed much of Steeplechase. Tilyou, who’d lost his empire, was said to have remained calm, posting a sign outside the park that read:
To enquiring friends: I have troubles today that I had not yesterday. I had troubles yesterday which I have not today. On this site will be built a bigger, better Steeplechase Park. Admission to the burning ruins — Ten cents.
And the park, indeed, was rebuilt, and as Tilyou had promised, it was “grander than ever,” with crowds flocking to it even before it was completed. Steeplechase, until today, remains the icon of the Coney Island of once upon.
THE POPULAR AND THE PECULIAR THE ELEPHANTINE COLOSSUS This seven-story, 200-foot tall, 31room tourist attraction stood for eleven years before burning down in a fire in 1896. Each of its rooms — some for lodging and others serving amusement purposes — made up the internal anatomy of an elephant, so guests could choose if they wanted to spend time in the intestines, shoulders, or just about any other body part. The front legs served as a cigar store, and the hind legs were home to a circular stairway. A museum took up the elephant’s left lung, and its eyes
were telescopes that served as an observatory for guests.
THE PARACHUTE JUMP Evoking the nostalgia of Coney Island during the postwar era, this iconic ride was never demolished even after standing defunct since the closing of Steeplechase in 1964. Nicknamed the “Eiffel Tower of Brooklyn” due to its shape, the tower is now registered as a landmark. Originally built for the 1939
World’s Fair, the ride had eleven parachutes that gave riders a “free fall” experience. It was modeled after parachuting towers with which parachutists were trained by the military. Attracting half a million visitors annually, the Parachute Jump was very popular among military personnel, who would bring their family members for a taste of the free-fall army training they underwent.

BABIES ON EXHIBIT Far from amusing, one Coney Island exhibit was a display of premature infants in incubators. While this may seem like an act of cruelty, Dr. Martin Couney, the mysterious medical figure who ran these exhibits for 40 years, actually did it so that visitor admission prices would fund the treatment of these premature infants and give them a chance at life. In the early 1900s, when incubators were a rejected phenomenon in the medical world, these displays funded their usage, and eventually standardized the practice, saving the lives of thousands of premature babies.
THE CYCLONE Another NYC-designated landmark, this wooden roller coaster will be reaching its hundredth birthday in just about seven years. For decades, it was a separate enterprise, initially with a 25-cent ride cost. It has been refurbished on several occasions, and over time has operated both independently, and more recently, as part of Astroland, Dreamland, and then Luna Park. Presently, it costs $10 to ride the Cyclone. The popularity of the Cyclone has inspired seven replica coasters with similar layouts in various Six Flags parks, as well as additional coasters internationally.
GIVE ME THE MOON! Tilyou unintentionally attracted his own competition when he invited Frederic Thompson and Elmer Dundy to move their wildly successful ride, A Trip to the Moon, to Steeplechase in 1902. When their contract with Tilyou was up, the enterprising pair rejected the new agreement, and instead set their sights on Sea Lion Park at the verge of closing, leasing the site as well as neighboring acreage. By 1903 they had established Luna Park, inspired by the name of the ride that brought them to Coney Island in the first place. Spending hundreds of thousands of dollars, Thompson and Dundy created an amusement utopia in an electric light wonderland, with over 250,000 electric lights adorning the park’s Ori-

ental-style buildings. The crowning glory of this park was a 200-foot tall Electric Tower decorated with thousands of lamps at the center of the park. But that was only part of the thrilling experience they offered.
A DAY IN DREAMLAND The crowds kept flocking to Coney Island, and another competition opened just the next year, in 1904. In contrast to the hoopla and chaos of Luna Park, Dreamland was painted a pristine white and designed in refined neoclassical architecture. Aiming to be
“bigger and better” than Luna Park in every way, Dreamland’s central tower was larger, and four times the amount of lights illuminated its buildings. Despite its understated design, nothing was typical about Dreamland — its

demise of this iconic park, as well. At the time of Steeplechase’s closing in 1964, it was Coney Island’s only remaining theme park. Much to the grief of all who held Coney Island dear, Steeplechase was sold for its land to be developed into luxury apartments. The developer, none other than our president’s father, Fred J. Trump, organized a “funeral” (or, according to some, a “demolition party”) in 1966 to “celebrate” the death of Coney Island’s amusement park history. Trump invited the press and handed out hot dogs (a novelty invented on the island), and the death was marked by the throwing of bricks at the stained glass windows of the park’s historic pavilion and its subsequent bulldozing, making Trump the target of much hostility. Following years of court battles, Trump was unsuccessful at rezoning the park for the development he’d planned.

It boasted scenic railways through artificial Alps, gondola rides through Venetian canals, a simulated submarine ride, and an attraction called Fighting the Flames, in which spectators would watch 2,000 people pretending to extinguish a blazing building. Eerily, Dreamland was destroyed in a real fire in 1911, the day before it was set to reopen after receiving a colorful makeover and many new attractions. With the newness of electricity and the attractions that used them indis-

criminately, Coney Island saw eight devastating fires between 1893 and 1911, each one of which destroyed at least three buildings.
THE DEATH OF AN ERA Dreamland never reopened after its fire, and then the economic crash and ensuing Great Depression dealt Coney Island’s entertainment industry a huge blow; things never picked up after that. Then a fire in 1944 that destroyed much of Luna Park meant the
Despite the closings of its iconic parks, Coney Island’s entertainment industry never fully died down. Family-owned Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park, formerly known as Ward’s Kiddie Park, has been in operation since 1950. (The Wonder Wheel dates back to 1920.) Astroland, the stuff many of our childhood dreams are made of, was named so for its space age theme. It opened in 1962, offering rides like Tower of Stars, Astrotower, the Cape Canaveral Satellite Jet, which simulated a trip to the moon, and other spacethemed attractions. After years of struggle, Astroland closed in 2008, and a year later, a new park, Dreamland, offered entertainment for the 2009 season only. Then, in 2010, Luna Park opened on the former site of Astroland, where it still is today. Both Dreamland and Luna Park were named for the historical parks that were once the pride and joy of this island.

If you’ve ever been to an amusement park safety, there are certain lessons and observed people on a roller coaster, that super-high sensation seekers can teach us about overyou might have noticed that there are coming challenges through the power of an iron will. various reactions to the sudden flips and turns. While some riders can be spotted NO MOUNTAIN with their faces twisted into grimaces of TOO HIGH fear and anxiety, others not far from them When Alex Honnold was a boy, he never imagined might have their faces alight with glee. This little that his love of climbing would is because humans are complex creatures, one day lead him to become one of the world’s most famous and two people in the same situation climbers. In fact, he claims that he was never notably gifted in can have vastly different experiences. There are plenty of people who are low on the sensationseeking scale and who actually undergo a stress response when placed in situations that feel even slight risky. Their bodies tense up and release stress hormones, ensuring the experience is one they’ll likely not want to repeat anytime soon. Others in the moderate range of the sensation-seeking spectrum revel in the rush of adrenaline and take pleasure in the unexpected, though they prefer the thrill of safetyensured experiences. For very high sensation seekers, the controlled danger of amusement parks and the like just don’t cut it. These are the people who jump out of airplanes or off the side of cliffs wearing only a parachute or wingsuit — people we often dub as crazy. But the truth is that every human and every trait comes with benefits. High sensation seekers can channel their desire for risk into productive actions. Because they are people who are blessed with the ability to remain calm and collected in the face of danger, they are precisely the type of people we want tending to patients in
a Hatzolah ambulance or flying our airplanes. Highly excitable people just wouldn’t fit the bill... And though we certainly cannot condone thrill-seeking that pushes the boundaries of
the sport as a child. But dedication led him to progress from artificial walls to tall mountains, from climbing with ropes to free-soloing — that is, scaling the side of a mountain with no protective gear whatsoever.
NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART Most people climbing large mountains such as El Capitan do it in sections, completing a portion of the wall every day. In order to rest up and catch a snooze, climbers will rig a portaledge — which is basically a tent or mattress — from the side of the mountain, and then tuck themselves in for the night. Sweet dreams! (And don’t roll over!)

ter eight years of mental and physical preparations, Honnold climbed El Capitan without protective gear in a total of 3 hours and 56 minutes, setting a new record that’s been acclaimed as one of the greatest athletic feats of all time. The climb was extraordinarily difficult, with areas where Honnold had to hang on to protruding bits of stone by the tips of his fingers and monkey-bar across to other fingerholds. There were also places where he had to wedge his hands into a thin crack running up the stone to lift his body upward. At one specific spot, Honnold side-shuffled across a ledge that ranged “To honnold” has become a common phrase in this generation, based upon this picture — from five to twelve inches taking on the meaning of facing fear, head-on. wide. But it was the vertical stretch of smooth granite 600 feet up the route that he found to be most challenging, for it was “like walking across glass.” If not for the special sticky-soled shoes he wore, the section would surely have been impassable. And yet, despite all odds, Alex Honnold's physical and mental strength held out, getting him safely to the top of the wall. Those steps conquer that fear, refusing to let it cripple him. were taken slowly and methodically, with Alex Honnold climbing El Capitan in a harness numerous times before the free-solo attempt. Part of his preparations involved memorizing every single move he would make on his way up, planning with utmost precision the sequence for exactly which toehold and fingerhold he’d use along the way. His method of preparation seems to be so successful at banishing fear that Jane Joseph, a cognitive neuroscientist, approached Honnold with the request to scan his brain. Using a functional MRI, Joseph was able to monitor how Alex Honnold’s brain responded to stimuli in the form of pictures. The pictures used were extreme in their ability to either disturb or excite most viewers — and yet, Honnold’s brain registered zero activity upon seeing them. Joseph LeDoux, a neuroscientist, commented that Honnold’s brain is “probably predisposed to be less reactive to threats that other people would be naturally responsive to, simply be- seeking, he nurtured himself into becoming a person cause of the choices he’s made.” In other words, through uniquely able to pursue thrills at the outer edges of danmany years of training, that “comfort zone” Honnold ger while simultaneously maintaining an abnormal level mentioned has been largely expanded, making his of control over his own mental and emotional responses. threshold of fear and excitement much higher than the As Alex says, “When free-soloing, obviously I know that I’m in danger, but feeling fearful while I’m up there is average person’s. While we certainly cannot glorify placing one’s life in danger, we can look at Honnold’s legacy and tell ourselves that if a man of flesh and blood is able to look an impossible mountain in the face and overcome it through perseverance and efforts to control his emotions, we, too, can overcome the many mountains in our lives. It takes grit, determination and logical planning for each step of the way — as well as much tefillah and siyata d’Shmaya. May we each be able to say that we’ve climbed our way to the top of our personal mountain and are truly the best that we can be.

“Bye, zeeskeit, enjoy the trip!” Remember those days when we’d wave our kids off with smiles, brachos and bags full of nosh, sending them out for a day full of fun? Nowadays, roller coasters and water parks are but mere wisps of memory. Who knows if a school-scheduled trip will even be a possibility in the coming season or two? But should that dream become reality, there will be hardworking people busy behind the scenes, pulling all the puzzle pieces together to give your kids a fabulously fun time. I spoke with Mr. Mendy Fisher, manager of the Rachmistrivka cheder of Monsey (who’s also been a sleepaway camp head counselor), to get a better idea of what sort of mental and physical calisthenics are involved in setting up a safe and memorable outing. “Amusement parks make great end-of-year trips,” Mr. Fisher tells me. “Water-themed trips are usually reserved for summertime.” But no matter when the trip will take place, he says, the booking should be done in advance. He usually starts thinking of which destination to book for the summer season between Chanukah and Purim. “If someone misses the boat, though, he might still be able to pull off a great trip. Chadarim and camps often work together to help each other out and book parks together. “In general, though,” he says, “even if more than one group is organizing a trip together, I try to put the
126 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / June 24, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
minimum number of kids possible into the park to ensure that there is little to no wait when it comes to lines. Standing in line just makes everything so much less fun! Of course, that can make it more expensive per child, as we sometimes have to rent out a place for more than one day and divide the children up into shifts. But when it comes to trips, it’s less about money and more about maximizing fun.” Larger parks, of course, mean larger crowds. “The second time I ever arranged a trip, I went big: We booked Luna Park on Coney Island. Baruch Hashem, it worked out well, with seven or eight chadarim all together. I would only recommend booking a large place when it comes to amusement parks, though; water parks work better when you can see everything in one glance. That’s because in water parks, you need to have control over the whole place at once to make it
“In general, the parks love having our kids. We constantly hear how well behaved our students are and that it is a pleasure doing business with our community.”
more exciting by turning everything into a matzav. I also feel it’s safer.” Safety, he tells me, is a huge burden carried by those who do the planning. “I always take along at least one EMT on trips, sometimes more, depending on the group size. Many times we reach out to the nearest Hatzolah chapter and book an ambulance to be stationed in the park — hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst. And of course, when a camp goes on a trip, the infirmary staff is also responsible for bringing along campers’ medications and administering them as needed. I also make sure that there will be an additional two vehicles available in case the group needs to be split up for some reason. And buses — though they are a huge expense — are something I won’t scrimp on. I never load buses to capacity because what happens if a bus breaks down or is in an accident, chas v’shalom? The kids deserve to get to their trip and to get home on time. If there is extra room preplanned in, then we can transfer kids from one bus to another in the event of mishap, and the driver can stay behind with the bus while the kids keep to the schedule.” Physical safety is only one aspect to planning trips for Yiddishe kinderlach; the safety of the soul is of great concern as well. Exclusive use of the park by a heimishe

crowd is number one on the list. “Some places will only rent out the park to us in the early morning hours or after regular closing time, because they want to be open to the public during regular business hours. Sometimes, though, we can get a park for the full day. Long before the kids come rolling in, though, staff members will already have been there, scouring the park for things we’d rather our kids not see. Pictures will be covered up, inappropriate electronic games unplugged; even
images on the sides of huge roller coasters will be taken care of. Over at Luna Park, for instance, we tarped off the view to the boardwalk. We’ll do whatever we have to do to protect the purity of our children. “Most places are understanding of the unique needs of our community. Some of them even have MP3s preprogrammed with Yiddishe music, ready and waiting for us. In general, the parks love having our kids. We constantly hear how well behaved our students are and that it is a pleasure doing business with our community.” Before continuing that thought, Mr. Fisher pauses to reflect. “We have a huge achrayus every time we rent out a park to make sure that kids behave properly and clean up after themselves. Staff members always have to make sure that they’re leaving the place in the best possible condition. “There have been times when a group has behaved especially well, and I was actually able to negotiate a lower rate per child than we’d initially agreed upon. We then put aside the money saved, and charged the parents less for the next trip. Being good pays, in more ways than one!” It’s more than just good behavior that makes parks happy to do business with the Orthodox community; it’s the sheer size of the customer base, as well. “Last year, after the horrific tragedy at Sahara Sam, I
128 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / June 24, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
called to cancel a group’s reservation, because how could we take the children to a water park after such a painful happening? The owner was pleading with me, saying that his business will shut down if the Yidden don’t visit the park, because 60 percent of his business comes from within the Orthodox community. He promised me that they would do whatever we requested; they’d add more staff, more lifeguards, lower the required minimum number of children… anything that we should come! But what could we do? We paid the park for their loss, but at the time, I couldn’t commit to anything for the future… Not that I can make any promises this year, either!” If there’s anything that recent events have taught us, it’s that plans for the future are never assured. “What do you do if things don’t go as planned?” I ask. “What if there is a rainstorm, for instance?” “When I was a camper,” Mr. Fisher replies, “our camp director sent us out on trips even when it was pouring. Whenever we arrived at the site, the rain would have already stopped. It was a miracle! He told me then his secret, and so far, it’s always worked for me, as well: The combination of putting money into the pushka of Reb Meir Baal Haness and the zechus of taking care of tinokos shel beis rabban never fails!” For Mr. Fisher, giving our youngsters a grand time is truly a passion of his. “But you should know,” he tells me, “children can surprise you and enjoy things you’d think they might not. Some of the best trips I’ve arranged were what I call ‘smart’ trips — those that involve Yiddishe history, as opposed to just fun attractions that are all about the thrill. If time permits it, we can even sometimes combine both types of trips into one.” He tells me, by way of example, what he means by “smart” trips: He’s taken groups to Jersey and Union cities, to Deal, Morristown and Lakewood. They’ve gone upstate to KJ, Bloomingburg and Blooming Grove. They’ve explored many different parts of the Yiddishe communities nearby, sought out brachos from esteemed roshei yeshivah, and spent time in communities that are different from what they’re used to back home. “These are trips that kids really walked away from feeling that they’ve had both a good time and learned more about the heimishe oilem. They’ve been welcomed in by other communities and have increased their understanding of the world and their ahavas Yisroel. Isn’t that the most thrilling type of trip of all?”

High-Flying Attractions KINGDA KA, the tallest and fastest roller coaster, is located at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. It peaks at 456 feet high and reaches 128 mph in only 3.5 seconds. CYCLONE, the iconic
roller coaster at Coney Island, debuted in 1927 and is one of the oldest rides still running today.
CONEY ISLAND was at its heyday between 1880 and 1900, when luxury hotels popped up alongside the beach. Amusement rides were built along with them, promulgating the early 20th century amusement culture in NYC. It was the largest amusement area in the country at the time.
LONDON EYE was the world’s tallest Ferris wheel when it was launched in 2000. On a clear day, you can see as far as 25 miles away and view most of London’s landmarks. LAS VEGAS’ HIGH ROLLER is currently the tallest Ferris wheel in the world
at 550 feet high. TOP OF THE WORLD is the highest transportable ride, at 312 feet tall. It is located in Geiselwind, Germany.

Wet and Wild Siam Park in Tenerife, Spain, holds the badge of honor as the number one water park in the world. Holding several world records, including the world’s largest man-made wave, the park boasts more than 30 breathtaking rides. Verruckt. It’s the German word for insane. And it’s also the name of the world’s tallest waterslide. Located in Kansas City, it topped the record at more than 168 feet high. The slide was permanently closed down in 2017 after a 10-yearold boy died during the ride. Dreaming of watching dolphins up close? Take a ride in one of the clear tubes at the Dolphin Plunge, where you’ll glide side-by-side with real dolphins! It is the signature attraction at Aquatica, Orlando.
Park Safety
Financial Figures
Are you afraid of those big, tall roller coasters? You are in good company. Many amusement park visitors avoid them because of emetophobia, the fear of vomiting, or acrophobia, the fear of heights.
A one-day ticket to the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World costs $105 per person, ages 10 and up. That makes for the most expensive entrance fee of amusement parks in the USA.
Here’s a fact most amusement park staff members won’t disclose: Roller coasters may cause subdural hematoma, a type of brain injury that causes headaches that just won’t go away. Designers test roller coasters with waterfilled dummies or sandbags before humans try the tracks. In addition, roller coasters are inspected daily by engineers before parks open to ensure prime rider safety.
As the theme park boasting the most visitors, it isn’t surprising that Magic Kingdom also holds the title of “Richest Theme Park,” valued at nearly $20.4 million in 2016. Entrance to Waldameer & Water World, Pennsylvania, is free. Sort of. You get to pay for all of the rides, instead. There’s no such thing as a free ride, after all. Six Flags operates 26 parks — with an average daily income of $432K, according to figures listed in 2018. Universal Studios Beijing is set to be the world’s most expensive theme park at an estimated construction cost of $6.5 billion.

FROM THE SEFER “HAKESER VEHAKAVOD”: Harav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt”l believed that it was more praiseworthy for a woman to cover her hair with a kerchief than a wig. In his words,
הואיל והנידון דפאה נכרית היא נידון אזי ברור שעדיף,בעיקר ההלכה מטפחת שהוא ענין על פי הלכה Since the wearing of a wig is questionable according to halacha, it is definitely preferable to wear a kerchief since this is a matter of halacha.” (8 )דעת רבותינו חלק א עמוד
A woman who learned that there may be a problem of halacha with wearing a sheitel, asked her husband, “Is it true that there are poskim who hold that it is assur for a woman to go out with a sheitel in public? Then maybe I should wear a tichel? Why should I do something that may be assur?” Her husband answered that he was not a posek and he had not analyzed this topic, but she could go to the gadol hador, Rav Elyashiv, and ask him how she should proceed. The woman went to Rav Elyashiv and asked him, in her purity and innocence, “Is it true that wearing a sheitel is questionable and it is better to wear a tichel in order to fulfill the will of Hashem according to all poskim? I want to do the will of Hashem, and I am ready to do whatever the Rav will tell me. If the Rav advises that I wear a tichel– I am ready. It’s just that this is all new to me. I never knew about this problem.” Rav Elyashiv answered clearly, “Surely it is better to wear a tichel. What is the question or doubt about it? Indeed, there are poskim who are of the opinion that a woman who wears a sheitel in public does not fulfill
the halacha of covering the head. Only one who wears a tichel fulfills the halacha according to all poskim. A tichel is glatt.” Upon hearing these words, the woman resolved to wear only a tichel, since through this she performs her special mitzvah according to the opinions of all poskim.
