HAIR HELP (Re: To Happy Hair Days, Issue 42) I read your hair article with amusement, as my adorable little curlyhead is the proud owner of a mane of rebellious flyaway locks. The Curly Girl Method is not for me, though. I am not yet ready to give up on proper shampooing and hygiene! However, I’d love to hear if anyone has a recommendation for a specific product that can be used each morning when brushing my daughter’s hair, which will tame it, detangle it and do away with the frizzes that end up appearing way too soon. PRIVATE CONVERSATIONS IN PUBLIC (Re: Your Voice, Issue 41) In her letter about proper conduct while shopping, T.B. mentioned not speaking on one’s cellphone in public. I would like to bring up another related point. I recently traveled via bus from Monsey to Brooklyn. I was looking forward to a ride of davening, daydreaming and dozing. Unfortunately, not everyone shared my aspirations. In particular, a tutoring session began on the men’s side via phone. It seems the recipient of the lesson was not grasping the material, and so the tutor repeated himself so many times until every passenger could have repeated the lesson. Yes, it was a “klang” of Torah, but this is a public vehicle; not everyone on board is of the same religion, and the driver

I’d like to point out an area where I feel that our conduct in stores and our sensitivity to other shoppers are often compromised. Too often I’ve been in line at the “ten items or less” register, only to see an individual waiting in line with as many as thirty items! People very often use the express line when they are in a rush; in fact, they would probably like to grab a couple more items, but don’t in order to be able to check out express. I don’t want to come across as nitpicking and nosing in other people’s business. No, I don’t actually count the items in other people’s carts. However, it’s sometimes obvious that the amount of items in a cart does not qualify for the express lane. I am aware that you, too, may be in a rush, but think about the people who cannot afford to wait those extra five minutes while you check out more items than you should. A woman once got into line behind me at the express register with what must have been over twenty items in her cart. I pointed this out to her, and she thanked me; she hadn’t even noticed! Since it’s only human nature to choose the path that seems to be moving quickest, I want to bring to everyone’s attention something they may have been doing unintentionally. Pinchos Goldblatter
BRING BACK THE PURE JOY As weddings are starting to once again reflect the style of previous standards, I’d like to point out some things. 1. We saw and appreciated weddings differently during the past few months. They were filled with happiness without costing us our entire savings. 2. The wedding schedule worked out beautifully: Kabbalas panim took place earlier than usual, the meal attendance was limited to close relatives, and the mitzvah tanz followed. Then it was finally time to dance. This enabled the guests to get home at an earlier hour and get a better night of sleep. 3. We were actually excited to get out of the house and celebrate simchos together! These are just a few things to take note of and reflect upon as we continue to celebrate Yiddishe weddings. Yehoshua ben Perachiya says, “Asei lecha rav, u’knei lecha chaver, v’hevei dan es kal ha’adam l’kaf zechus — Appoint for yourself a rav, buy for yourself a friend, and judge every person favorably.”
Appoint for Yourself a Rav
The Rishonim explain that a person needs a rebbe so that he has someone who will give him mussar and set him straight if he ever does something wrong. This is similar to what the Gemara says: that a person should always live in the same town as his rebbe, so he remains under his rebbe’s watchful eye and can promptly be given mussar if necessary. The Baal Shem Tov’s talmid, Reb Mendel of Premishlan, had a good friend who was a tailor. They had an arrangement between them whereby the humble tailor would come to him each day and give him a rundown of mussar. This continued even when Reb Mendel was so great he already had a large following of talmidim. One day, the Baal Shem Tov was due to visit the town of Premishlan, so Reb Mendel asked the tailor not to visit on that particular day; he wanted to avoid the shame of being rebuked in front of his rebbe. The next day, during the Baal Shem Tov’s visit, Reb Mendel’s face grew dark; through the window he spotted the tailor’s familiar figure hobbling toward the shul. He quickly locked the doors, but the tailor climbed through the window and launched into his usual mussar tirade. Observing the scene, the Baal Shem Tov said to his talmid Reb Mendel, “This is called being mekayem ‘asei lecha rav.’ You took one of your friends to do the job of giving you mussar — someone who is so determined, he even climbed through the window to do his job. This is the secret to your success and the suc-
cess of your future. Halevai I would have such an arrangement; I would be much greater in my avodas Hashem! The mishnah in Yoma says that two families from the days of the Beis Hamikdash will always be remembered in shame: Garmi and Avtonus. Why? Because the Garmi family knew how to make the lechem hapanim in the Beis Hamikdash, and the Avtonus family knew how to make the ketores, and they did not obey the chachamim when they were directed to reveal the recipes and instructions. Thus, the dark stain remains on their names. Generations later, after the Churban, Reb Yochanan ben Nuri met an Avtonus descendant, who gave Reb Yochanan a scroll on which was written all the instructions for making ketores. The descendant from the Avtonus family said that as long as their family had been ehrlich, they’d kept the secret to themselves, afraid that others would chalilah use ketores for unholy purposes, such as avodei zara. But now that his family was veering a little from the righteous path, he was bestowing the scroll to Reb Yochanan so he could preserve and guard it so the information shouldn’t leak to anyone who might have improper motives. Reb Yochanan ben Nuri took the scroll to Reb Akiva and told him how, in truth, the Avtonus family had held their recipe for ketores to themselves with such sacred intentions, so much so that no family member of theirs ever walked out with perfume because they were worried people would assume they were using the ketores. Similarly, the Garmi family never ate white bread, so no one should suspect them of using the lechem hapanim — which were made with white flour. Hearing about their righteous intentions, Reb Akiva cried, but he still didn’t change the mesorah that these families are to be remembered in a bad light. This begs the question: If Reb Akiva knew that the two families guarded their secret lishmah, and he even cried over it, why didn’t he change the mesorah and declare that from then on these families no longer needed to be viewed with bad associations? The answer is that although they meant well, it was wrong of them to flout the chachamim’s directives to share the recipes, and thus their bad reputation remained.
Buy for Yourself a Friend
People might be concerned that if they take a rav for themselves, it will be too heavy on them. Thus, the mishnah simultaneously advises to “buy a friend, because a good rebbe will actually look after you and serve as a friend. He will know how much he can demand from you and how much he can push you. But why the strange expression of “buying a friend? The Bartenura explains that a rebbe provides his services
We try to impress our friends, we copy them and we adopt their mindset, so we must spend more in the search until we find a friend who will have a positive INFLUENCE ON US.
Bring in your Shabbos with
for free, but no one owes you their friendship for free, so you have to spend money to get the right one. The Sfas Emes says that a friend has an even greater influence on a person than a rebbe: We try to impress our friends, we copy them and we adopt their mindset, so we must spend more (whether in time, money or effort) in the search until we find a friend who will have a positive influence on us. Now, one might think that a friend one buys is artificial, and that only a friend one connects with naturally is real. That’s not the case. A friend with whom one naturally connects is a selfish thing; you feel comfortable with them, thus you’ve chosen them as your friend. But this mishnah doesn’t instruct us to befriend someone for the sake of our comfort and pleasure, but to find someone who will be a good influence, someone whom we will benefit from in ruchnius. Judge Every Person Favorably
The Tiferes Shlomo says that this refers to our thoughts about others, which should only be favorable. He asks: “Doesn’t Hashem know the truth? What difference does it make what our mortal thoughts are? And he answers that this proves the koach of a Yid: A person might have had mixed kavanos when doing a mitzvah or aveirah, and when his day of judgment comes, it’s not so straightforward. However, when a Yid is dan a person l’kaf zechus below, it brings about that in the Heavenly Courts, the
MEANING.

person will be judged with the same kaf zechus as his fellow mortals judged him. The Baal Shem Tov says on the pasuk “Hashem Tzilcha — He is our Shadow,” that like a shadow, Hashem will mirror our views. Our positive thoughts can reverse what is contemplated in Beis Din Shel Maaleh! There’s a famous story told of a mohel in Yerushalayim in 1918 who had saved up enough money to acquire a rare, expensive golden Napoleon coin, which he kept hidden on top of his cupboard. When World War I broke out, the financial support the Yidden of Eretz Yisroel had been receiving from the European kasse of Reb Meir Baal Haness came to a halt, and poverty was rampant. The mohel decided this was the rainy day he had been saving the Napoleon for, and he took it out. His little son noticed it, and later that day, oblivious to its value, he took the coin to the nearby market to buy a candy. Meanwhile, his father wanted to change the coin for smaller money, but it was nowhere to be found. Then the child walked in, candy in hand, and the father immediately realized what had happened. He ran back to the store and demanded the coin back from the owner, Rachamim. The owner promised that the child had handed him a copper coin, noting that the candy wasn’t even worth the penny he handed him, but he felt bad and gave him the candy anyway. The mohel refused to believe him, especially since his son had admitted that he indeed took the coin from the hiding place and used it to pay for the candy. The case was unarguable. They went to beis din where the dayanim paskened that Rachamim had to swear the truth. Ehrlich that he was, Rachamim broke down crying; he was so devastated that he had to swear. As he lifted the Sefer Torah to swear, the mohel changed his mind, not wanting to be the cause of making a Yid swear to a blatant lie, so convinced was he of the truth of his story. The parties were dismissed, but understandably, the mohel always held a grudge against Rachamim. And of course, the whole town heard about Rachamim’s craftiness in cheating the young boy, and his reputation — and livelihood — was ruined.
A year after World War I, the mohel got a letter in the mail. Inside was a golden Napoleon! The letter accompanying it said: Dear Mohel, Two years ago I saw your son walking out of your home with a golden Napoleon. I wondered how a kid could be handling such a dear coin so casually, and I realized you must have a lot of money. I was going through a hard time, and I decided to “borrow” the money from you. I fooled your son and switched coins with him, and I sent him on his way. Now I am more financially stable so I’m returning the coin to you.
The mohel remembered Rachamim and the downfall his unfavorable judgment caused him. He couldn’t forgive himself for it and, though embarrassing, he personally repeated this story wherever he went to teach people that no matter how obvious the truth seems, be dan l’kaf zechus, for you can never know what really transpired. Taking this middah even further, there was a bachur in a yeshivah who often caused trouble, but the mashgiach was never able to catch him redhanded. The mashgichim were waiting to catch him in the act so they would finally be able to justifiably expel him. Sure enough, one night the mashgiach saw him setting fire to the wheels of a maggid shiur’s car, causing great damage. The hanhalah convened with the clear intentions of sending him packing. When confronted with the accusation, the bachur denied it, seemingly lying through his teeth. The hanhalah expected the mashgiach to challenge him since he himself had witnessed the incident, but instead he banged his fist on the table and declared, “If he says he didn’t do it, we have to believe him.” And the boy evaded being expelled yet again. Miraculously, the next few weeks saw a massive transformation in the boy’s behavior and hasmadah, and he eventually grew up to be a chashuve maggid shiur. He often repeated this story, saying, “I knew quite well that I had burned the car, but the trust that my mashgiach placed in me was so empowering and demanding that I wanted to live up to his trust. And so here I am!”

A New Reality for Schools Likely for September After three months of at-home learning and a summer that was anything but par for the course, it seems clear that education will look very different in the upcoming 2020-2021 school year. In a Monday announcement, Cuomo said that school reopenings will employ the same formula the state used for its economic return, following the data to ensure that virus rates remain low. Schools will only be permitted to reopen in regions that have reached phase 4 and also have a daily infection rate that is 5% or lower over a 14-day average. All of New York’s school districts will be required to submit detailed reopening plans by July 31 that follow newly released state guidelines. The governor will release final education guidelines
42 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / July 15, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
during the first week of August, and even schools that are scheduled to open could be shut down before the academic year gets underway should virus rates top 9% over a seven-day average after August 1. Cuomo was emphatic that all decisions regarding schools would be driven by actual facts and statistics. “You reopen if it is safe to reopen,” said Cuomo. “How do you know it’s safe? You look at the data. We will not use our children as guinea pigs.” In a statement also released on Monday, the New York State Board of Regents said that students would be required to wear masks at school and on school buses. Health screenings, disinfecting procedures and social distancing would all be mandatory at schools in the upcoming year. Cuomo made it clear that he disagreed strongly with President Trump, who has called repeatedly for schools to welcome students back to brick-andmortar classrooms in the fall, categorizing virtual learning as a “terrible”
option. It also came just days after New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a plan that blended remote schooling with several in-person scenarios based on building size, with students rotating in and out of class on different days of the week according to set schedules that would be finalized and released in August. The governor wasted no time shooting down de Blasio’s plan last week saying, “If anybody sat here today and told you that they could reopen schools in September, that would be reckless and negligent of that person.”
Disappointment Reigns as Judge Refuses to Overturn State’s Sleepaway Camp Ban An eleventh-hour bid to allow New York’s sleepaway camps to open with coronavirus-related restrictions in place ended in defeat last week, with a federal judge refusing to issue a temporary restraining order that would have given tens of thousands of children a much-needed summer vacation. The suit was filed on June 18 by the Association of Jewish Camp Operators, which represents more than sixty summer camps, and four parents who are health care professionals, and it charged New York Governor Andrew Cuomo with violating two constitutional amendments by refusing to allow camps to open this summer. The 35-page court filing argued that Cuomo’s decision restricted the free exercise of religion and denied
parents their right to choose their children’s education and upbringing. The suit further noted that religious camps should be exempted from COVID-19 restrictions much as the George Floyd protests had been allowed, and it also insisted that strong safety protocols would be in place at overnight camps. But Judge Glenn T. Suddaby, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of New York, refused to grant a preliminary injunction that would have allowed camps to operate legally even while the case was being heard in court, reported The Jewish Press. Suddaby rejected all but one of the arguments presented by the plaintiffs and noted that while day camps and child care facilities have been allowed to reopen, they pose a much smaller risk to children than overnight camps, where children congregate for three meals daily and spend eight hours together nightly in their bunks. The judge also stated that despite the lengthy safety protocols proposed by camps, having approximately 42,000 children in 50 to 60 upstate New York camps could potentially overburden local hospitals and that, in the event of an outbreak, hundreds of children could potentially be forced to quarantine hundreds of miles away from their families. While there are camps that have chosen not to reopen this summer, others have relocated to states with less restrictive policies for the season. Several upstate camps, on the other hand, have elected to operate as full-day programs serving children summering in the Catskills. A letter issued by the New York State Department of Health on July 10 warned that any facilities that had taken advantage of a loophole and opened as temporary residences instead of as overnight camps would be subject to numerous restrictions regulating sleeping and dining, with masks required in all common areas. Violators could face fines of $1,000 per violation per day and be denied operating permits in future summers. Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, whose thirteen-year-old daughter was supposed to attend
sleepaway camp this summer, said that he felt that camp operators had taken adequate precautions to ensure both health and safety. “When I advocated for this and led the fight for this, bringing everyone together and making the case to the governor’s office and the Department of Health, I didn’t just do it on behalf of the tens of thousands of parents who send their children to sleepaway camp,” said Eichenstein. “I actually did it as a father as well.” Eichenstein expressed his disappointment over the decision, saying that it is unfortunate that children who have already had their education compromised for months by the pandemic will be losing out on the learning opportunities provided by summer camps. “My frustration is with the policy makers we have been engaging with over the past three months,” said Eichenstein. “We were clear from day one that there are serious safety guidelines that need to be implemented. I would never advocate to endanger anyone’s life.”
At Long Last, Malls Reopen Three and a half months after they were ordered closed by a statewide executive order, New York’s shopping malls have begun reopening once again. At a press conference last week, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that malls in any region that has reached phase 4 of the state’s reopening guidelines would be permitted to reopen provided they have special filters in place to remove coronavirus particles from the air. Rockland County reached phase 4 last Tuesday, followed one day later by Nassau County, with New York City on schedule to enter phase 4 on July 20. The openings have had both shoppers and retailers heaving collective sighs of relief. The Palisades Center in West Nyack was one of several malls in the area to welcome shoppers back
on Friday, the first day of permitted operations, though some stores have delayed their openings. Friday was also the opening day at Galleria at Crystal Run in Middletown, Poughkeepsie Galleria, Galleria in White Plains, Broadway Commons in Hicksville and Green Acres Mall in Valley Stream. In Long Island, Roosevelt Field, Smith Haven Mall and Walt Whitman Shops are also all back in business once again. As expected, malls are requiring all visitors to wear face coverings and are limiting their capacity to ensure social distancing.
Nursing Home Visitation Allowed to Resume in Limited Capacity In yet another sign that New York is inching ahead in the battle against the coronavirus, Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker announced that visitors will once again be allowed in nursing homes that have had no new cases of the coronavirus for at least four weeks. In a statement released on July 10, Zucker said that no more than two individuals, one of whom must be at least eighteen years of age, will be allowed to visit a resident at one time. Face masks, temperature checks and social distancing will all be mandatory, and the number of visitors per day would be limited to 10% of the facility’s total capacity, which would mean that in an 80-bed home, just eight visitors would be allowed each day. Zucker noted that the new protocols, which are subject to change as needed, were formulated based on the knowledge that the coronavirus spread through nursing facilities mostly through asymptomatic staff and visitors. “I know how painful it has been for residents of these facilities to endure such a long period of time without seeing family and loved ones, and my hope is that this adjustment to the visitation policy will provide some comfort to everyone,” said Zucker.

Recap: Elisheva’s father is hospitalized due to an infection, but he insists that when he recovers, he wishes to return to the nursing home rather than move into his daughter’s new, beautiful home. Someone is angered about this, and tells Emmanuel from the nursing home to find out what is behind the elderly man’s decision. “It’s hard,” Elisheva’s father said suddenly. “What is hard, Tatty?” She bent over him. “Does something hurt you?” He shook his head from side to side. “So what is hard?” “It’s hard,” was his answer. He sighed. “The weakness?” Again, a shake of the head. “Being in the hospital?” “No.” “So what is it?” “Being alone.” “But Eliyahu was here all night, Tatty,” she said, almost pleadingly. “He just went down to shul for Shacharis. I know it’s not easy to be alone, but I really tried hard to come early…” He waved his hand weakly. “Not that?” she asked. “When I was a boy,” he said, “and I was alone…” All at once, the few photos she knew from that time flashed through her mind. Photos from her father’s childhood. Two were from Europe; the rest were already taken here in Eretz Yisroel. He gave the impression of being a calm, worry-free child, and in some of the pictures, he was also surrounded by friends. “Did your friends have families?” She slid her finger along the metal railing of the wide bed. “Most of them probably didn’t.” “They had names…” he whispered, and
closed his eyes. “They knew who they were.” “And you didn’t…” She lowered her tone automatically — either taking his cue, or because her father’s roommate was suddenly wheeled in, surrounded by relatives who were making quite a racket. She and Eliyahu had gotten to know some of the roommate’s children over the past three days, and the size of that family was evidence that even in the postwar generation, the differences continued. Her parents had only one daughter — her — and they remained a small, somewhat solitary family, with hardly any relatives except for two of her mother’s cousins. Like Elisheva’s father, none of her mother’s close relatives had survived the war, but she at least had a name, an identity and a past. She had been ten when she was sent to hide with gentile neighbors, and she took her memories with her. But Elisheva’s father had nothing. Today, though, Hashem had compensated them with a large family, and her father was living to see the nachas. Perhaps he would reconsider and agree to come live with them, just so he could bask in that nachas all the time? Maybe that was the reason he had suddenly raised the topic of his past? She peeled back the foil cover of a yogurt, wondering if she should say anything more on the subject. Behind the curtain she could hear
July 15, 2020 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 47 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
the voices of the roommate’s three children. Their tones were a bit elevated; they seemed to be disagreeing about something. Elisheva wondered what it was about this thin curtain that made people think that it was made of soundproof cement. Her phone rang. “Mommy?” two voices chorused together. They must have been arguing about who would speak, and then decided to use two handsets at the same time. For a second, she felt like putting her phone on speaker, just so there would be some noise on her side of the curtain, too. “What’s up?” she asked. “No, I can’t hear anything like this. Only one person at a time, please.” “Mommy.” It was seventeen-year-old Riki. “Don’t ask what we found under the refrigerator!” “Maybe I’d better ask what you didn’t find…” Elisheva chuckled. The bottom of her fridge was very low, and a miscellany of odd items always accumulated in the space between the floor tiles and the fridge. It was only possible to retrieve those items by moving the fridge, which happened only rarely, when she was giving the fridge a good cleaning. “Hmmm… your silver ring?” “No,” Riki said, sounding dejected for a moment. “I hope we’ll still find that.” “B’ezras Hashem. So what did you find?” “Besides for lots of dirt and torn pieces of paper and some old kindergarten arts and crafts, there’s this silver yad, with a pointing finger. You know, the type used during krias haTorah.” “What? That sounds to me like another project someone brought home from preschool.” “Project? It’s not made of cardboard, Mommy.” “I think I once saw such a thing made out of plastic. Maybe the teacher spray-painted it silver when they were learning about a Sefer Torah?” “But it looks like real metal, Mommy,” Shuki interjected on his extension. “And it also sounds metallic when you bang it. It’s a little smaller than what we have in our shul, but I think it’s real silver. There are even black stones on it.” “Really? Strange… Who found it?” The facts here seemed fuzzier, because she got two conflicting answers at the same time. Riki said “Shloimy” at the same second that Shuki said “Bentzy.” Then an argument broke out, and a few of the other children joined in the background. “We moved the fridge together,” Riki finally said. “But we didn’t get behind it right away. First we went to get shmattes and cleaners and all the things we’d need. In the meantime, the little ones climbed in behind it to
find the usual treasures, and that’s when they found it.” “What does Tatty have to say about this?” Elisheva asked as she stood up to close the crack between the curtain and the wall. Not that it would lower the arguing voices coming from the other side, but perhaps she’d get more of a sense of privacy — and she could only hope that those on the other side would feel the same way. “He just went out to buy some bulbs; he hasn’t seen it yet.” “Okay, sounds interesting,” Elisheva said. “Put it on a high shelf for now, and show it to Tatty when he gets back. No one at home knows what it is? Or how it got to us?” “No.” “Did you ask everyone?” “Except for Tatty and Esty, who is at the neighbor downstairs.” “Okay. Maybe they will know something.” Elisheva leaned back, studying her father. He had finished eating his yogurt and was now in the middle of bentching. No, she would not raise the subject again of where he should go home to. It would probably just irritate him. Maybe he would agree to come for the first days of yom tov. In the meantime, though, she would not badger him. After all, to be honest, he would probably get more rest in the nursing home than in her house, big as it might be. But a week or two after Pesach, she would ask him again to move in with them. Permanently.
Again, the two Jewish men came, and he just hugged his thick pillow with dry eyes, gazing out the long, high, rectangular window in the corner of the room.

Bratislava – 5708/1948 The nurse who entered the room found the boy standing next to the bed, holding on to it and swaying unsteadily. “You got out of bed?” she cried angrily. “Without permission?” He gazed at her, and she wondered how much he was actually seeing. “Come,” she said, in a gentler tone. “Come lie down again.” She lowered the metal bar so that he could sit, and then she turned around and looked at him. “Wait a minute. How did you get down?” He was silent. “You climbed out!” she declared. “Do you know how dangerous that is? Now get back into bed, quickly.” He didn’t move. “Quickly!” she repeated, raising her voice. “Come on!” He arched his knees and climbed onto the bed, but

didn’t lie down. “Where are they?” “Who, Janek and Ulush Cohen?” “My pants.” “Your pants? Here they are. You’re wearing them.” He lowered his eyes. “No. My pants.” “A big boy acting as stubborn as a baby! You mean the clothes that you came to the hospital with?” “Yes.” “Oh, they took everything to the laundry.” “I had things there,” Gustav whispered. “In the pocket.” “I’ll find out which doctor had admitted you here, and we’ll ask them what they did with those pants. Now you are going to lie down here like a good boy, right? And don’t get off the bed without permission. It’s dangerous. Your legs are still weak.” She was about to leave the room when she heard him whisper again: “And where are they?” “The pants again?” “No, Janek and Ulush.” “I don’t know. Ulush was here with you at night.” “Janek didn’t come by today.” “Right. Maybe he’ll come tomorrow.” “But the police came instead.” “And you were sleeping. How do you know?” “I know,” Gustav mumbled. Of course he knew. Janek had told him that whenever people like that came in, he should make sure to be asleep. There was no need to explain what people “like that” meant; he understood perfectly. So this morning, he had “slept,” and the police had marked down that he was there, but he didn’t know what exactly they had written. He knew that Janek’s friends had come up with a new name for him, and had handed all kinds of documents to the hospital, but he didn’t remember which name they had given him. “So today the police were here when you were sleeping, and Janek might come tomorrow when you won’t be sleeping,” the nurse repeated. “And maybe Ulush will come by at night,” he whispered hopefully. But Ulush didn’t come that night.
And Janek did not come by in the morning, either. Instead, two Jewish men came, but they hardly spoke to him. They just conversed between themselves, patted him a bit, and then left. The next day again, Janek and Ulush did not come. Again, the two Jewish men came, and he just hugged his thick pillow with dry eyes, gazing out the long, high, rectangular window in the corner of the room. What had happened to Ulush? Had she gone to Edo? But he was in Eretz Yisroel. Had she also traveled to Eretz Yisroel? Together with her new baby? And left him here alone? The next morning, the same nurse came in. She had a scary face, but Gustav knew that deep down she really had a good heart. “I found it,” she said secretively as she slipped a hand into the pocket of her white coat. “It wasn’t so easy, because they almost threw it out; they are afraid of infection. But in the end, it stayed here in a box. But —” She took out a rusty pocket knife. “This knife really has to go straight to the garbage now. It’s dangerous, especially since it’s rusty. If you cut yourself with it, you can get very sick. “Oh, and you also had a paper in your pocket. The people here on staff and the man who found you in the street tried to read what it said. They wanted to know who you are, but the water washed out the words and turned the paper into mush. So they had no choice but to throw that out.” “So the paper was thrown out?” the boy asked. “What am I standing here and telling you for the last five minutes?” the nurse snapped. “There’s no paper. Finished. It was torn. Destroyed. Thrown out.” “But maybe I remember what it said,” he whispered hoarsely. She was already gone. “Yosef Ludmir, from Petrozhelka 10…” He gazed out the window. He could not remember the names and addresses of Edo’s uncles in Eretz Yisroel. He had never been able to pronounce the strange words. He hoped that Edo would find them anyway. Or that they would find him. To be continued...

VP Speculation Focuses on Tammy Duckworth THE PULSE: Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth has seen her stock rise as a potential running mate for Joe Biden. She is of Asian and American descent and is an Iraq War Veteran and Purple Heart recipient. Duckworth was among the first handful of Army women to fly combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. She is a double amputee, as she lost both her legs when the Black Hawk helicopter she was co-piloting was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by Iraqi insurgents.
asked, “Should statues, for example of George Washington, come down?” She appeared to equivocate when she responded, “Well, let me just say we should start by having a national dialogue on it at some point.” Bash repeated the question and asked, “That may be true, but George Washington, I don’t think anybody would call him a traitor, and there are moves by some to remove statues of him. Is that a good idea?” Duckworth again responded, “I think we should listen to everybody. I think we should listen to the argument there.” FOX’s Tucker Carlson lashed out at Duckworth and called her a “coward” who “hates America.” RESPONSE: Duckworth responded to Carlson in
CONTROVERSY: Duckworth courted controversy
in a recent interview with CNN’s Dana Bash. She was

an op-ed in The New York Times. “Let me be clear,” she wrote. “I don’t want George Washington’s statue to be
pulled down any more than I want the Purple Heart that he established to be ripped off my chest,” but “remember that part of what has always made America not just great but good is that every American has the right to question those in charge.” She quoted from Washington’s farewell address where he warned Americans to “guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.” Duckworth also let Carlson know that she was up to fight. “These titanium legs do not buckle,” she declared. IMPACT: Carlosn’s tussle with Duckworth has upped her profile and likely boosted her chances for being selected for the VP slot. According to Politico, she has caught the attention of high-profile Democratic donors and veterans groups.
Tucker Carlson 2024?
Trump Pardons Roger Stone THE PULSE: President Donald Trump commuted the prison sentence of his longtime friend and adviser Roger Stone. In doing so he has shown once again that he is unafraid of making bold and controversial decisions that he considers just and correct. In November, Stone was convicted of seven charges, including lying to Congress, tampering with a witness, and obstructing a congressional committee proceeding. President Trump portrayed Stone as a victim of overzealous prosecutors investigating potential collusion with Russia. White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that “Roger Stone is a victim of the Russia hoax that the left and its allies in the media perpetuated for years in an attempt to undermine the Trump presidency.” However, in an interview with ABC news, Attorney General Willian Barr said, “I think the prosecution was righteous, and I think the sentence the judge ultimately gave was fair.” THE IMPACT: In an unprecedented op-ed in The Wash-
THE PULSE: The political rumor mill is awash with ru-
mors of a potential 2024 presidential bid by FOX News host Tucker Carlson. Carlson is a rising star on the news network, and his ratings have soared. Carlson’s viewpoints are generally in sync with President Trump, and he is viewed as a possible heir to the populist Trump brand of politics. Carlson recently took some high-profile jabs at Nikki Haley, who is also seen as a potential 2024 contender. He also set off a firestorm by attacking the patriotism of Democratic Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth. THE IMPACT: A successful Carlson candidacy would demonstrate that the Trumpian MAGA brand of Republican politics is not an aberration, but is here to stay. It would counter the assumption that a post-Trump Republican party would resemble the GOP of old. Carlson would be a formidable opponent to more mainstream candidates such as Marco Rubio and Nikki Haley. Carlson is an enthusiastic supporter of Trump’s “America First” foreign policy. However, he has been critical of Trump’s approach to Iran. He slammed the targeted killing of Qasem Soleimani and called it a “neocon objective.” He had previously boasted that he convinced the president not to retaliate militarily for the downing of an American drone by Iran.
ington Post, Robert Mueller defended the Stone conviction. “Congress investigated and sought information from Stone. A jury later determined he lied repeatedly to members of Congress. He lied about the identity of his intermediary to WikiLeaks. He lied about the existence of written communications with his intermediary. He lied by denying he had communicated with the Trump campaign about the timing of WikiLeaks’ releases. He updated senior campaign officials repeatedly about WikiLeaks. And he tampered with a witness, imploring him to stonewall Congress.” Trump received backing for his decision from Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and representatives Matt Gaetz (R-FL) and Jim Jordan (R-OH). However, he received sharp criticism from Republican senators Pat Toomey (RPA) and Mitt Romney (R-UT). Chris Christie, former New Jersey governor and Trump supporter, acknowledged that the president had “a right” to do it but said he wouldn’t have commuted Stone’s sentence. Democrats condemned the move as a “mockery of our democracy.” Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) announced that she would introduce legislation that would limit a president from commuting, pardoning or offering clemency to anyone convicted of a crime that affects the president’s behavior and culpability.

BETTY CROCKER DINNERS By: Chana Rivky Spitzer Photo credit: EPIC Portraits 845-213-8865
I generally prefer standard pots and pans that can be scrubbed clean over unsuccessfully degreasing electronic gadgets that can’t be washed under running water, but the Betty Crocker is an exception. It’s a trend I’m sure glad I was introduced to when I received one as a Purim gift from my boss.

Wandering. It’s the fate of the Galus Yid. Ever since Churban Bayis Sheini, Klal Yisroel has been wandering about, settling in one locale until the time came to find a home in another. The Torah, too, has been tossed along with us on our travels. At each stop, throughout the generations, we’ve been gifted with the presence of gedolim and talmidei chachamim who ensure that the chain of Torah mi’Sinai continues, unbroken. One illustration of the hashgacha involved in transplanting Torah to foreign soils is the case of the Arba’ah Shevuyim, the Four Captives.
66 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
IT WAS THE TWILIGHT OF THE PERIOD OF THE GEONIM. Sura and Pumbedisa, the yeshivah communities of Bavel, were the undisputed headquarters of Torah worldwide. From every corner of the world, Yidden looked toward their leaders for guidance and psakei Torah. From all over — Europe, Africa, Asia and even Eretz Yisroel — talmidim flocked to learn in the Bavli hotspot. But, alas, it seemed the era of central leadership would soon give way to nightfall. During this era, the flourishing center of Yiddishkeit faced an economic crisis, and the community’s population dwindled. In an attempt to improve the situation, Rav Hai Gaon, the very last of the Geonim, sent four

prominent talmidei chachamim overseas to raise funds for the yeshivah. It was the year 4720 (960), dangerous times at sea. Besides the fear of wild storms that sometimes tore ships apart, there was the nightmare of violent pirates who freely roamed the waters. These bandits would seize a ship, and among the valuables they looted were the unfortunate passengers who would be taken captive and sold at slave markets. Two or three days after the talmidei chachamim set sail on the Mediterranean from Bari, Italy, Ibn Rumahis captured their ship, taking control after a brief struggle. Ibn Rumahis, a Muslim admiral, soon discovered that there was prize “booty” aboard — the four scholars from Bavel. A Jew — especially a respected one — was ultravaluable, as Yidden were known to pay any price to ransom a fellow brother. He rerouted the ship and set sail for Alexandria, Egypt. There, he put the first of the group, Reb Shmarya ben Elchanan, up for sale. The price was high, but that didn’t deter the local Yidden from redeeming the captive who was to become their rav. (Others say the pirate attempted to sell all four of the gedolim, but was not satisfied with the price for his combined “prize.” He thus decided
Besides the fear of wild storms that sometimes tore ships apart, there was the nightmare of violent pirates who freely roamed the waters. to sell just one and continue on to another place to sell the remaining captives.) Reb Shmarya settled in Old Cairo, also known as Fostat. The Yidden discovered that a gadol was in their midst and begged him to become their rav. Reb Shmarya couldn’t refuse. After all, he felt a debt of gratitude to the community for saving his life. He also saw it as a unique opportunity to set up a yeshivah and thus spread Torah to this growing Yiddishe stronghold. Besides, Reb Shmarya didn’t want to risk taking to the seas once again to return home! Soon, Reb Shmarya’s influence was felt throughout the area as he became the beloved and respected master of its Yidden. Rumahis’ vessel continued its voyage, anchoring next in Kairwan, Tunisia. There, the brutal pirate offered Reb Chushiel and his son Reb Chananel for top ransom. Kairwan was a place to where Reb Chushiel had always wanted to travel. He saw potential in the growing community and harbored dreams of setting up a yeshivah along with Reb Shmarya, who originated from Kairwan. Interestingly, hashgacha dropped him right at its port! At first, Reb Chushiel declined the offer to take on the

position of rav. He hoped that Reb Shmarya, as a native, would come over and take on the post. Reb Chushiel wrote several letters to Alexandria, begging Reb Shmarya to make the move, but when he realized that that this was not to be, Reb Chushiel submitted to the pleas of the community and agreed to take on the mantle of leadership. Reb Chushiel founded the legendary yeshivah that produced many special talmidim — including his son, Reb Chananel, and Rabbeinu Nissim — and it served as an important link between the East and West. Meanwhile, the ship resumed its journey in the direction of Spain. The third captive, Reb Moshe ben Chanoch, was still aboard, along with his wife and son Chanoch. Ibn Rumahis, the savage pirate, noticed Reb Moshe’s wife, a woman whose external beauty was surpassed only by her inner modesty, and wanted to take her away. He promised her riches and offered to endow her with the title “Queen of the Seas.” As the pirate spoke, she asked her husband in Lashon Kodesh if she would have her place in Olam Haba if she took her life. Without hesitation, Reb Moshe quoted the pasuk in Tehillim (68:23), “I will bring back from the depths of the sea…” His wife immediately jumped overboard and drowned. It was a tragic blow, further compounding the tragedy of captivity, but Reb Moshe and his son remained strong. At the slave market in Cordova, where the ship docked next, Reb Moshe and his son were redeemed by local Yidden. Reb Moshe, who became known simply as “the captive,” maintained a low profile and assumed the position of shamash in the local yeshivah. One day, as the rosh yeshivah, Rav Nosson, was delivering a shiur, it was evident that he had overlooked a topic in Maseches Yoma. Reb Moshe couldn’t restrain himself and spoke up, clarifying

The shamash was actually an accomplished scholar, and certainly not the am ha’aretz he appeared to be! Displaying his extraordinarily refined middos, Reb Nosson proclaimed, “I cannot be rosh yeshivah anymore! This captive is a genuine talmid chacham,

and I view it as a privilege to be his talmid. Let’s beg him to become our rav and rosh yeshivah.” With Reb Moshe at its helm, the yeshivah in Cordova quickly gathered acclaim, becoming famous not only in Cordova, but in all of Spain and beyond. Young students flocked to learn under Reb Moshe’s tutelage, and the greatest talmidei chachamim

Now those who wished to bask in the glory of Torah that only Bavel had previously offered no longer needed to make the arduous journey; Cordova itself boasted a rosh yeshivah of the caliber of the chachamim in Sura and Pumbedisa! Indeed, some of the next generation’s greatest leaders were educated in this flourishing Torah center, including Reb Moshe ibn Ezra, Reb Yosef ibn Migash (the Ri Migash), Rabbi Yehudah HaLevi (author of the Kuzari) and the Rambam. The identity of the fourth captive is unclear. Some say the unknown talmid chacham was sold in Sicily. Other sources say it was Reb Nosson ben Yitzchok, and he was ransomed in Narbonne, France, where he also set up a successful yeshivah.

The Arba’ah Shevuyim made a great difference to Yiddishe life as the centers of Yiddishkeit shifted westward. Just a few people, but what a significant impact they made! The yeshivos they cultivated and the talmidim they fostered helped the Torah of Bavel take hold in the newest settings of the Galus Yid. It began as a mammoth tragedy and resulted in a colossal benefit for Klal Yisroel. Throughout the ages, even though we don’t get to see it clearly in the moment, Hashem’s loving Hand continues to lead us and our leaders, allowing for the transmission of Torah and Yiddishkeit from one generation to the next.

DURING THE THREE WEEKS, we mourn the Churban of the Beis Hamikdash as well as the countless atrocities that Klal Yisroel has endured over the centuries at the hands of those who hate us and want to annihilate us. We know on an intellectual level that life without the Beis Hamikdash is not as it should be. We also understand that there was much pain and suffering during the Spanish Inquisition, the pogroms, blood libels, Gezeiros Tach v’Tat, and the Crusades. But many of us more readily relate to more recent events that have hit closer to home. There is an abundance of museums, books, videos, testimonies and programs designed to ensure that the Holocaust will never be forgotten. Despite the fact that the number of Holocaust survivors is dwindling, our generation continues to be impacted by their experiences and inspired by their spirit and mesiras nefesh. It is especially poignant when a personal story from within one’s own family is known and retold. In the 1930s, my father, Joseph, lived with his parents, Rabbi Yaakov and Rose (Reizel) Schapiro, and his three siblings, Genie, Asher and Rachel, in the town of Kittsee, Austria. It was one of the “sheva kehillos” in the region of Burgenland, on the outskirts of Vienna. Jews lived there peacefully for many years, side by side with their non-Jewish neighbors. As my grandfather, Rabbi Schapiro, was the assistant rabbi of the shul, as well as the town chazan and shochet, the family lived in an annex of the shul and shared a very close relationship with the German caretaker and his family. My grandfather would often play chess with the caretaker, and the children played with each other. Shabbosos and yomim tovim were filled with excitement. Even the non-Jewish neighbors would come to the shul to watch the celebrations, especially on Simchas Torah. Rabbi Yaakov Schapiro, z”l

The shul in Kittsee, as seen from a distance
All this changed on March 12, 1938, the day of the Anschluss, when the annexation of Austria to Germany sealed the fate of the Jews of the country. Kittsee was among the very first communities to fall victim to Hitler’s murderous plan to eradicate every last vestige of Jewish life from Europe, and its Jews were among the first to be expelled from their homes and community. Some have suggested that the Nazis, ym”sh, used Kittsee as a test case of

sorts, waiting to see what the world’s reaction would be before they continued to do the same to other communities. When there was no reaction at all, they felt free to continue their expulsion of Jews from other towns and cities. When Kittsee was taken over by the Nazis, the change was felt immediately. German flags with swastikas appeared over the town’s official buildings. Not long after that, in the middle of the night, the Nazis forced the Jews to take cans of paint and smear the word “Juden” on the sides of their homes. Then the Nazis led all the Jewish men down the street and forced them to cry out, “I am a Jewish swine.” To make them shout even more loudly, the Nazis poured buckets of water onto the men. My grandfather, a leader of the community, was at the front of the line, leading this group of humiliated Jews. He was forced to shout louder than everyone else. The women and children stood in the doorway of their homes and cried as they watched this pathetic scene. My uncle, six years old at the time, saw this procession from the window of their home. In his innocence, he thought his father’s standing at the head of the line was a sign of respect; he couldn’t understand why my grandmother was crying. Little did he know that this was all part of a malevolent plan to strip the Jews of their dignity. Many of the non-Jewish
friends of my father’s family had tears in their eyes as they witnessed this event. Only a few thugs were happy and made fun of the suffering Jews. A growing sense of fear and unease began to creep into the kehillah. Then another edict followed hard on the heels of this one. The mayor of the town announced that nonJews did not have to pay back anything they owed to the Jews, nor were they allowed to purchase any merchandise from them. The Nazis were systematically eliminating any sense of stability the Jews had. All this took place just before Pesach. The preparations for yom tov were done under a cloud of fear. While sitting at the Seder, my father’s family could hear the Nazis goose-stepping up and down the streets, and on April 15, the morning after the Seder, the Nazis finally expelled the town Jews from their homes. My father was always reluctant to speak about his traumatic

experience in pre-war Europe, but on occasion he would share some of his memories during the Seder. He told us that the Nazis came to tell them that they had to get out of their homes within ten minutes and gather at the square. Everyone was forced to leave: the young, the old, and even the bedridden. There were no exceptions. My grandmother, fear etched on her face, rushed the children out. They did not even get a chance to take along any of their belongings. At the station, the Jews were forced to sign over all they owned to the Gestapo. They were told that they would never see their homes again, and indeed, they never did. The Gestapo herded them all into a cold cellar without food and kept them there for an entire day. My grandfather was given a paper that he was told to read out loud to the group of about 50 people. The gist of it was: Moshe led the Jews across the sea And the waves hardened And the water divided in two; The Jews successfully crossed. And I, like Moshe, will lead you across the water But the waves won’t recede The current won’t calm down And you will all drown.
When reading this, my grandfather’s voice cracked, and the entire kehillah broke down and cried. At night the group was split into a few small groups and loaded onto wagons normally used to transport horses and cattle. As if the experience itself wasn’t traumatic enough, all this took place on a very stormy night. They were very cold, very hungry and very scared. They rode in the wagons for an hour or two and suddenly felt a change in the air. They could feel the cold, moist winds blowing, and they could smell a river nearby. The wagons crunched over the sand until they were ordered to stop. The Nazi guards shone small lamps into the cars and ordered everyone to get off. The younger people got off first and then helped the elderly, the women and the children alight. In the darkness, they made out the sounds of a river flowing somewhere below, slapping the banks, a baby squirming in its mother’s arms, and an old man sighing deeply. “March!” the guards demanded. The group was guarded both at the front and at the back by young men in uniforms carrying guns and small swords. They led the Jews over ridges and through bushes with the light of their lamps,

and then through a wide area in complete darkness. When they reached the river at the border, the guards commanded the group to stop and transfer to motorboats. At the opposite shoreline, the Nazis instructed them to get out. Once the large group was standing on the shore, the Nazis took off in the boats while shooting into the air and left the Jews stranded. The group included the rav of the town, my grandfather, a community activist and many children. Nobody knew where they were. When they saw signal lights from the left and heard the bells echoing from Kittsee, they realized they were on an island known as No Man’s Land, a disputed piece of territory in the shape of a triangle between the borders of Austria, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. The area contained a forest and some open fields. Some members of the group thought they should wait until the morning before looking for a way out of their dismal situation. Others thought it would be best to search for shallow water where they
might be able to sneak across the border into Hungary or Czechoslovakia. Finally, the group decided to look for a breach in the border. They searched all night while carrying the children. When day broke, they still hadn’t had anything to eat or drink. After crossing a low stream, they found themselves in the woods. There they came across a frost-covered pool from which they drew water with their fists to drink. They then decided to wait there until dark, when they would resume their search for help. While they waited, they davened and cried out to Hashem, their tears overflowing. They said Tehillim out loud together, and when they said the perek of “Mimamakim,” they truly felt like they were crying out from the depths. They huddled together to try to keep warm, but the cold was bitter. Their hands and feet were numb. The children were crying; their small limbs had become blue and stiff. Older people were fainting. The younger people talked of suicide while the elders davened that Hashem should have rachmanus and send them all a merciful death so that they wouldn’t have to go against the Torah and commit such an aveirah. During the day the group of Jews covered themselves with branches. At night they walked many miles from one border to another looking for refuge, but they were repeatedly turned away. Besides being homeless and unwelcome in any country, they were also starving. Due to the cold, there were no fruits on the trees nor vegetables in the ground. Years later my grandfather told us about a piece of candy that he found in his pocket. My father and his siblings all wanted the candy, and my grandfather decided to have them all share it. Every couple of hours each child would take a couple of licks and then pass it to the next child. This was all they ate for four days. On the fourth night, they were standing outside the Hungarian border. A guard came toward them, and my seven-year-old aunt fell at his feet and begged him to have pity on them and take them to a room or stall where they could warm up and sleep. The guard actually had tears in his eyes and answered that he also had children and surely would not want this to happen to them. If it were up to him, he would take them to a house. Soon the Hungarian and Czech guards decided to send the Jews back to Austria. The group begged the guards not to send them back, but their pleas fell on deaf ears. The crowd was rounded up at night, like a herd of cattle, and then led back to the border of Austria. They were taken over the border to a wide, open field, and soon the Austrian storm troopers came running toward them, shocked to find that the group had returned despite explicitly being told not to. The Jews tried to explain that it wasn’t their fault, but to no avail. Then they were accused of not even being citizens of Kittsee, and of course, proving their citizenship was impossible since the Nazis had confiscated their papers. Some of the women stepped out of the crowd, fell on their knees, held up their babies,
and begged the storm troopers to let them in anywhere. Anywhere! Even Dachau or another concentration camp. Finally the Nazis pushed the Jews into the cold, dark cellar of a Jewish inn, which had become the headquarters of the storm troopers. The Nazis then proceeded to give the group members brooms, brushes, hot water and soap and told them to scrub
The aroma was so pleasant and tempting, but the food wasn’t kosher. The religious Jews closed their eyes and moved away from the food. the stone floor. Anything to humiliate the Jews. They forced ten-year-old children and seventyyear-old men to crawl on all fours, and guards stood over them with small whips. Mothers were not allowed near their babies, who lay crying on a pile of rags. This brutality went on for an entire day. My family’s former Christian neighbors came by when they heard the Jews had returned to town. These were people with whom the Jews of the town had shared very good relationships over the years. Many cried when they saw them, and they wanted to help in any way they could. They brought them packages of food. The aroma was so pleasant and tempting, but the food wasn’t kosher. The religious Jews closed their eyes and moved away from the food. The irreligious members started to cut the meat into pieces and served it to the children. My uncle asked my grandfather if he could eat the meat, and my grandfather said he could. But when my uncle noticed that my grandfather wasn’t eating and asked him why, my grandfather explained that he himself was not eating because the meat was treif, but that the children — my uncle and his siblings — were allowed to eat because it was a matter of pikuach nefesh. After hearing this, as hungry as he was, my uncle refused to eat, not wanting to commit the double aveirah of eating treif and eating chometz on Pesach. Among the Christians surrounding the inn was a teacher from the school in Kittsee. Some of the children in the cellar were her students and she wanted to speak with them and comfort them, but the guards would not permit it. Soon it started to rain and the crowd dispersed, but the teacher remained in the heavy rain, insisting that she be given the opportunity to see her students, including my aunt. Finally the storm troopers took her away, and the Jews never saw or heard from her again. To be continued…

In several places in Tanach and the Midrash, there is reference to the Jewish people being subjected to four exiles. Most midrashim and commentaries understand that the four empires (or exiles) that ruled over the Jewish people described by Zecharyah (Chapter 6) and Daniel (Chapters 2 and 7) refer to Babylonia, Persia, Greece and Rome (see, for example, Ramban, Bereishis 36:23 and Bamidbar 24:20). However, the ibn Ezra (Daniel 2:40) and others disagree, noting that the Roman Empire has long disintegrated, and a new “empire, that of the Muslim Arabs, swept across a huge tract of the world. The ibn Ezra concludes that since Greek and Roman cultures were very similar, the third galus was Greece and Rome together, and the Arabs are the fourth.

BAVEL
PERSIA
We are, unfortunately, very familiar with the destruction of the first Beis Hamikdash by Nevuchadnetzar the King of Bavel, much of which is described in various places in Tanach. The city and country of Bavel was in Mesopotamia — literally, the area “between the rivers” (the Tigris and the Euphrates) — which forms most of the contemporary country of Iraq. To this day, descendants of the Jewish communities who lived in Iraq, where Jews lived for 2,500 years, are referred to as Jews of Bavel.
Not many years after the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash, the powerful empire of Bavel was overrun by the Persian Empire. The Jews were now under the authority of a new nation, and many spread across all 127 provinces of the new empire. They were certainly known in the capital city of Shushan, in modern Iran. In the cases of Persia and Greece, the Jews were not exiled from their location. Rather, Persia overtook Bavel, and thereby changed the culture — and indeed, the geography — of where the Jews lived, but it is not accurate to say that we were “exiled” to new places. Instead, it is quite accurate to say that under the new management, Jews now moved from Bavel to the entire ancient world.
GREECE
(or more accurately, Hellenism) Alexander the Great swept away all before him. His father, Philip, conquered all of Greece — no small feat, when you realize that the Greeks were frequently at war with one another, and each city was in its own country. Alexander then established the largest empire the western world had ever known at the time — from the Balkans to India. He then made his worst mistake as a 33-year old conqueror: He got sick and died, and his empire was divided among his generals. From a Jewish perspective, the two generals that were most important were Ptolemy, who ruled from Alexandria, Egypt, which soon became the location of the largest Jewish community in the world; and Seleucis, who set up his capital in Antioch, Syria. One of the Seleucid emperors, Antiyoches Epiphanes, went on a rampage to destroy Judaism, including bris milah, Shabbos and study of the Torah, as we know from the Chanukah story. Galus Yavon, the Chanukah story, was a spiritual galus, not a geographic one. It was a war between religion and assimilation. This was probably the first instance of Jewish history in which the main fighters against the Torah were Jews — self-hating Jews, whom we call the Misyavnim, who were intent on assimilating completely into Greek religion

ROME According to most opinions, the fourth galus is that of Rome. After establishing control of the ancient world from Britain to India, Rome eventually destroyed the Beis Hamikdash and the city of Yerushalayim; exiled the Jews from our homeland; and also ruthlessly put down the post-Churban state of Bar Kochba with incredible cruelty and bloodshed. At the time of the Mishnah and Gemara, Jews had already dispersed as far west as Spain. Another result of the Roman conquests was that Jews spread first to Rome, then northward to northern Italy, and eventually to Germany and France, thereby creating Ashkenazic Jewry. Over the course of many centuries, descendants of these Jews moved eastward, forming the vast Jewish communities in Poland, Russia and other parts of Eastern Europe. In answer to the ibn Ezra’s question that there was subsequently an Arab empire, many understand that the Christian world, and then its sequel, the modern galus, are all continuations of Rome
THE ARABS As mentioned above, according to the ibn Ezra, the fourth malchus is that of the Arabs. This malchus is a bit different from the others in the sense that it was never ruled by one individual king or one dynasty. Mohammed himself succeeded only in conquering a few cities in the middle of the Arabian desert. But his spiritual descendants eventually conquered from the Pyrenees Mountains (which border between France and Spain) through the northern third of Africa (including also all the countries immediately south of the Sahara desert — Mauritania, Mali, Chad, Sudan, Nigeria; the entire Middle East; almost all of Western Asia; and South Asia as far east as the Spice Islands, now called Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei). This “empire” ruled a wide band from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific.
A LESSON! In the two destructions of Yerushalayim, there is absolutely nothing miraculous. Both catastrophes took place according to the normal course of events. How could tiny Eretz Yisroel, located at a very strategic crossroads of three continents, have avoided falling prey to the rising Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman and Arab powers? Indeed, the location of Eretz Yisroel was the most unfortunate one possible for a small state that wished to protect its independence. It was not Yerushalayim’s downfall that was miraculous. Rather, the miracle was the existence of Yerushalayim of old when it did exist, when every natural prerequisite was absent. It could exist because of Divine intervention, and to this day this is true — when we look to Hashem for His Leadership, we are safe (see Collected Writings of Rav Hirsch, Volume I, p. 299).

Summer in the Catskills. The history of this phenomenon is the history of New York’s Jewish community over the past century. Before the days of air conditioning, the mostly secular Jewish families of the city would make the trek up to one of the many bungalow colonies, hotels and resorts that dotted the rural countryside in Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties. This area was playfully referred to as the Borscht Belt, and was at its peak of cultural relevance in the middle of the last century. Eventually, middle-class families moved out to the suburbs, Jews were no longer discriminated against in popular resorts and country clubs, and flights to faraway destinations became more affordable. These and other demographic shifts led to a steep decline in business for resort operators. One by one, colonies and hotels were bought off on the cheap by frum families, camps and hoteliers. Thus, the Catskills of today are at once nothing and everything like the Catskills of that bygone era. Each week, in this new column, we will focus on one of the many prominent summer destinations frequented by members of our community. We would love to hear your thoughts, feedback and stories. If you have anything to share or wish to see your colony featured in the coming weeks, please drop us a line at comments@thebpview.com. We hope that the community will enjoy and benefit from this interactive column.

HAR NOF: A COLONY THAT HAS KEPT ITS CHARM “What type of families spend their summers there?” This is the first question people ask when considering to buy or rent a unit in a bungalow colony. Few places elicit the overwhelmingly positive reactions that one hears about Har Nof, a prominent chassidishe bungalow colony overlooking the Kiamesha Lake. The name Har Nof roughly translates to “the hill with scenic views,” and these beautiful views are rivaled only by the beauty of the community that calls this place home for two months every year. The colony hosts about 75 heimishe families from chassidishe affiliations: a large Gur contingency as well as members of a host of other chassidishe communities. There are two shuls that hold minyanim every Shabbos, but the community unequivocally considers themselves as one. Unlike some of the newer or younger colonies, the general atmosphere is more modest and reserved, a relic of the bungalow colonies frequented by the previous generation of frum families. Large games do not take place, men are more likely to walk around with a rekel on, and there is no smell of barbecuing meat permeating the grounds.
HISTORY Krauss Colony was founded about 90 years ago as a colony for Jewish seniors. A majestic pathway lined with tall pine trees led to the main building, which served as the gather-

ing hall for all major activities. On the grassy hill surrounding this building, a row of small bungalows arranged in a semi-circle hosted the summer visitors. Over the decades, the Krauss’ business saw significant decline, and in the 1980s a group of chassidishe families, many of whom had previously gone to Censors’ in Monroe, joined together to purchase the colony and its adjacent grounds. Legend has it that when the families came to visit the property before purchasing it, they arrived in the dead of the winter to a colony buried in knee-deep snow. The warm and green days of summer were far from their minds, but they went ahead and finalized the deal. They then designed the colony layout that is still found today. There’s Uptown, the original section up on the hill, with the main building still standing and home to three units. Then the Downtown section was added, a large circle boasting a beautiful children’s playground. When the colony changed ownership, the renamed Har Nof saw the addition of a section called The 12 — twelve units built around a large grassy hill with shady trees — and The 18 — a rotunda surrounded by eighteen fresh bungalows.

could be seen hunched over open Gemaras and seforim at all hours of the day. With their three daily minyanim, a number of prominent rabbanim often choose this colony as their preferred vacation destination. The minyanim and fully stocked beis midrash have turned Har Nof into a central hub for others in the surrounding area. The colony also has an on-site grocery managed by the popular Super 13 supermarket in Boro Park, which has become a very popular attraction. These amenities have led to many frum families purchasing homes and properties on the roads near Har Nof. The colony itself is perfectly designed for larger families with children — and often einiklach — who enjoy the many child-friendly attractions, beautiful grounds and waterfront scenery. In 1990, when the LA Times ran a feature on the transformation of the Borscht Belt, it discussed Krauss’ transition to Har Nof, with the writer providing this opening description: “Under tall, spreading trees, a swarm of children ride tricycles and chase each other between rows of refurbished white bungalows. Their mothers sit in a cluster of lawn chairs, kibitzing away the hours and watching them play…” Thirty years later and every word still rings as true as it did then. In conversations with Har Nof vacationers, a sense of pride in its authentic old-time charm shines through. Avrum Shlome Berkowitz, the president of the board says, “Baruch Hashem, Har Nof continues to be an ehrliche, heimishe colony where we can enjoy our summer without compromising on the values we maintain the other ten months of the year.” Despite many of the original buyers having already handed over the summer cottages to the next generation, it is still common for some of these trailblazers to come visit for a week or a Shabbos. It appears that you can leave Har Nof, but Har Nof never leaves you.

Over 4500 have already donated, demonstrating a tremendous Kiddush Hashem. Recent scientific breakthroughs have shown that plasma therapy is as of now the most effective way to treat the novel Coronavirus. Plasma donations are also being used to develop and create a vaccine against Covid-19, so it is imperative that every willing potential donor should join the plasma drive. If you are over 18 years old and have tested for antibodies, you have the opportunity to save hundreds of lives and ease the suffering of countless others. It is up to you to answer the call to save Cholai Yisroel in their time of need. Now during the rise of coronavirus and the fear of a second wave, plasma donations are even more critical than ever. Besides plasma therapy, which is used to treat and heal suffering patients, there is the potential of it being used as a passive vaccine. Hadassah hospital has already started to use the plasma-derived hyperimmune IgG serum for COVID-19 patients with early positive results. Plasma donations have long been needed for patients with immune deficiencies. Plasma-derived antibodies are used to treat a host of ailments where the body is missing antibodies of its own. Its lifesaving properties can be used to help your father, mother, grandparent, neighbor, or friend. The more current plasma drive is extremely crucial, since the more donations we have now; the more lives can be saved in the event of a second wave chv. The researchers developing the vaccine have made it very easy for you to donate, with free transportation, nutritious meals for breakfast and dinner, and other incentives. The renowned medical referral organization, Refuah Helpline has verified the positive preliminary results on the effectiveness of the plasma treatment. The community is strongly urged to go donate plasma due to the urgency of the situation. Potential donors can give plasma donations up to once a week, which means that every week you have the ability to increase the likelihood of preventing the pain and suffering of another. Join the over 4500 passionate individuals who have already donated and take part in this life-saving plasma drive. All it takes is some of your time, and you too can be part of this Kiddush Hashem and help save countless lives. To schedule your appointment to donate plasma please call, 347-296-2999

COVID-19 ADVISORY Be advised that many parks have reduced parking by 50%, and local roads may have closures in effect. Many popular parks will fill to capacity by noon and close early to incoming visitors and traffic. Lake Minnewaska and Sam’s Point are experiencing extensive congestion on good-weather days, and both sites are subject to intermittent closures as parking lots reach capacity. Please respect neighbors and surrounding communities: Do not park on adjacent roadway shoulders. Minnewaska’s parking capacity is also reduced due to construction. The Stony Kill Area and Foordmore Area are closed until further notice; access and parking are not permitted in these areas.
A K S A W E N N I M STATE PARK PRESERVE 5281 Route 44-55, Kerhonkson, NY 12446 30 to 40 minutes from most heimishe areas in the Catskills
Sprawled over 22,275 acres on the Shawangunk Ridge in Ulster County, history and nature come together in the most breathtaking way at one of New York’s largest preserves, Minnewaska State Park. There’s so much beauty to behold within the miles of this nature wonderland that you can keep coming back and still won’t cover it all.
845-255-0752
Its peaks rise some 2,000 feet above sea level, and its valleys are cut by clear streams. Stunning falls thunder down its cliffs, and three sky lakes hide in its folds, their waters crystal clear since they’re fed by rain alone (hence their name). Miles of carriage roads and footpaths provide hiking and walking areas (a trail map is available in the park office), and the jaw-dropping views from its forests and open ledges capture niflaos ha’Borei in its purest form.
9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
There are many trails to hike, of different difficulty levels and durations. Here are three notable features of Minnewaska State Park and its surrounding area:

AWOSTING FALLS
Lower Awosting Lot Old Minnewaska Trail Kerhonkson, NY 12446 You’ll need to purchase a $10 parking ticket at the main entrance of Minnewaska State Park, to where the Lower Awosting Lot is quite close.
For an easy hike to watch the 60-foot plunge into Peters Kill Creek in Minnewaska State Park (whether it’s a trickle over the edge or a dramatic raging surge will depend on the weather), you’ll need to take the large gravel trail back toward the main gatehouse from the Lower Awosting Lot. After 5 to 10 minutes you’ll get to a small bridge, from where you’ll make a left to Awosting Falls Carriage Road, which will lead you to the falls. The total hike to the falls should take between 15 and 20 minutes, and you’ll be able to get right up next to both the top and bottom of the falls.

THE ANCESTOR OF COVERED WAGONS: THE CONESTOGA WAGON These wagons were named for the Conestoga River, located in Pennsylvania’s Lancaster County, the region where these wagons were first built and put into use. German immigrants first began building these super-sized wagons in the eighteenth century as a means of hauling crops to the market — or to transport any other material over short distances. The Conestoga wagon was as strong as it was heavy. Its floor curved upward on either end, keeping the wagon’s contents from tipping out of the wagon, and its oiled or painted canvas cover protected the load from bad weather. Remarkably, a Conestoga wagon was capable of hauling a load that weighed up to six tons! It was pulled by four or six horses or oxen, and the driver would either walk alongside the wagon or ride one of the horses.
THE NEXT GENERATION: PRAIRIE SCHOONERS Inspired by the Conestoga wagon, but tweaked to fill a different need, prairie schooners were the classic covered wagons that were mostly used during the pioneering era of the 1800s. They were called so because their white canvas tops resembled the sails of ships, all heading west over the prairies of the United States. Since these schooners were expected to cover large distances, they were designed with the needs of the pioneer in mind. That’s why they were lightweight in construction, with a smaller wagon box and lower sides than the Conestoga wagon, and built primarily of hardwood for durability. The end result was a wagon that would hopefully manage to cross over 2,000 miles of wilderness and survive at least five months of heavy wear.

DID YOU KNOW? The wheels were constructed of wood to keep the wagon lightweight, but they were rimmed with iron (as were the axles) to prevent wear. And in drier air, when the wheels were prone to shrinkage, they’d be at risk of losing their rims. Uh oh! Due to their lack of springs or shocks, these prairie schooners rattled with every small bump they encountered on the trail. That’s why riding in these wagons was so very uncomfortable and most pioneers chose to walk alongside their possessions instead. If you’re thinking pioneers cozied up in their wagons for the night, think again. These prairie schooners were pretty compact — the boxes measured only about four feet wide and nine feet long — and were loaded with supplies and possessions, leaving no room for even makeshift beds. Instead, families moving west would either spend each night in the open air, or at most, hunker down underneath their wagons. Prairie schooners were pulled by either horses, oxen or mules, and once the wagons were loaded, these animals would be expected to pull about 2,500 to 3,000 pounds of weight! This made the lightweight structure of the wagons all the more important. The iconic white canvas cover, oiled to make it waterproof, was called a bonnet, and it doesn’t take much of an imagination to guess why. It even boasted a drawstring at either end that could be pulled tight in the event of bad weather. A pioneers’ wagon box, or bed, would have some storage chests built in along its inner or outer walls, a barrel ready and waiting to collect rainwater for drinking somewhere along its side, and a box of tools attached to its front. From the rear axle would hang a mixture of tar and tallow, which would be used to lubricate the wheels as needed. Many pioneers had these wagons built for the express purpose of moving west, and they’d comfortably fit a family of four. Those who couldn’t afford a new single-purpose wagon often modified their farm wagons to serve as a means of long-distance transport. Then there were those on the other end of the spectrum who were able to afford more than one wagon so they could comfortably transport all of their supplies and possessions across the country.
A TRANSPORTABLE KITCHEN: THE CHUCKWAGON Built to accompany later wagon trains of settlers or workers heading west, a chuckwagon would serve as the kitchen for large groups of travelers. A chuckwagon would typically be even smaller than a prairie schooner, and it would boast built-in shelves and drawers for storage with a hinged lid that doubled as a working surface for the cook in charge. The wagon box would be used to store additional supplies, and a canvas storage area underneath the bed of the wagon held firewood. Food items that were easy to preserve were stored in the wagon, as well as food the travelers collected along the way. And, of course, the ubiquitous water barrel was in charge of collecting rainwater for drinking.
