PARCHMENT POINTERS
Catskills
(Re: A Slice of Sweetness, Issue 44) One of the reasons I look forward to Wednesdays is the new edition of The Boro Park View. The first thing I look out for is the recipe section. I also enjoy reading the Week in Review to get the scoop of what’s going on! The cakes featured in last week’s issue look so delicious! I can’t wait to try them; the Lemon Chiffon Cake and the Cappuccino Loaf in particular. Do they freeze well? (Editors’ note: They freeze beautifully.) Also, I would like to build on the tip you gave in regard to lining a pan with parchment paper: I measure a piece of parchment to the size of the pan, scrunch it up into a ball, and under running water I make it wet enough so that it becomes very soft. I then squeeze out the water and open up the paper, which is now really easy to press into the pan. This method also makes lining a round pan that much easier. Another simple tip that makes the job so easy and quick: After squeezing the excess water from the parchment paper, open it up and lay it over the pan. Take another pan of the same size and simply place it on top of the parchment paper and press it into the pan that’s underneath. The top pan will do all the work of smoothing out the parchment paper into the right place! This is a real timesaver, especially when you need to line several pans at once. C.H.

WHY THE CAMPS ARE CLOSED
Listen
Happy mothers speak

If your nights wouldn’t have to look this way... Sounds like a dream?
Let’s make it happen!
(Re: Week in Review, Issue 40) I was very disappointed to read in your paper that the reason our camps can’t open is that we do not register as Democrats and don’t go out to vote. When the nations asked Bilaam Harasha if they will succeed in hurting Klal Yisroel, he answered, “Pass their shuls and listen. If you hear a kol Torah coming out, you won’t win.” As long as the kol kol Yaakov is strong, the yadayim yedei Esav will not be successful. Why are our camps closed? Maybe because we need to daven more and learn more. Maybe because we need to have more respect for our rabbanim and talmidei chachamim. Why are the camps closed? We don’t know for sure. But definitely not because we refuse to join a party that is against Torah values. The only way we will see bracha is by doing ratzon Hashem and sticking up for kavod Shamayim. Should we go out to vote? When possible, and not against our principles, we definitely should. But let’s remember that we don’t control anything. We are only fulfilling our duty of hishtadlus. Let’s all daven and do Hashem’s will, and hopefully we will soon have our camps and schools open without any restrictions. H.S.
PREPARED IN ADVANCE (Re: Milchigs Made at Home, Issue 26) When I clipped your shortcut cheese recipes back in March, I didn’t think that I would actually be using the recipes so soon. But with the milchig Nine Days menu and all of the milk accumulating in my house from the food programs, the incentive was there. The cheese tasted very similar to cottage cheese. I used it to make the cheese latkes featured a few pages over, with great success. I’m looking forward to attempting the yogurt recipe next. Hashem definitely prepared us for this in advance! To all of us poor Yidden, who are deprived from fleishig meals this week, no worries. We can now choose from an exciting array of delectable menus and mouthwatering recipes with amazing Nine Day specials. So much to look forward to. Or — maybe to be distracted with, lest we feel some tzaar haShechinah? How sad. And inappropriate. What have we come to? This trend goes against our basic Yiddishe values. We are desensitizing Yidden all around us. Glimpsing through the offerings, one might wonder which yom tov is coming up. If your friend were sitting shivah, r”l, would you offer her a brochure with a gourmet menu? Consumed by her grief, would she dream of such a concept at all? Unfortunately, after thousands of years, we’re not grieving over the Churban the way we should. But let us not actively look for ways to distract
ourselves and the people around us. As we know, “Kol hamisabel al Yerushalayim zoche v’roeh b’simchasah.” Surely, we all want to merit this great, ultimate simcha. Let us becry this outrageous trend, and may we be zoche to experience the ultimate joy of the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash b’vias goel tzedek b’karov, amen. L.F. Boro Park

Every year I think to myself how stressful school shopping is and how it can so easily be avoided, at least in part. Uniform shopping, of course, has to be done with our children, and school bags, too, are important for kids to choose. However, simple school supplies such as paper, folders, glue, etc., can easily be supplied by the school, with the parents getting charged for it. Why are most schools not taking advantage of the simple buy-in-bulkand-bill strategy? It would help parents tremendously in those pre-school days, and probably save them money, as well. I know of one cheder that does this. Maybe the other schools can get with the program? Here’s to hoping they will! A parent who really doesn’t like the push and shove of supplies-shopping

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN I had a very frightening incident that I want to share with the community. Being a busy mother, I hire cleaning help once a week to help me maintain my home. There was a period of time in which I hired new help, and though I felt uncomfortable with her, there was no specific reason for me to fire her. She’d been coming for several weeks when the following story happened. I was in my bedroom while the cleaning lady was washing my bathroom. My baby was in his crib, right next to me. I never leave my child alone when there’s a stranger in my home, and this time was no exception. I did, however, think it was safe to cross the hallway to the laundry room, which is within eyesight of my baby. My back was turned for only a few seconds when I heard my baby gasping for breath. I ran over to him and noticed him struggling to breathe. His face was wet, and there were droplets all over the linen. I picked him up and realized that he smelled of bleach. I was shocked, and looked over at the cleaning help. She was standing, watching the drama, still holding a bottle of Clorox in her hand. She was shaking, as if she knew I’d caught her in the act. I panicked, and ran to the sink to wash the chemicals off my baby and out of his eyes. Baruch Hashem, my baby is okay, but I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn’t been in the room — or worse, at home. I’m hoping my story will serve to encourage parents to be extremely vigilant when there is help in the home together with one’s children. N.W.

Rabi Nechunya ben Hakanah says, “Kol hamekabel alav ol Torah, maavirin mimeni ol malchus v’ol derech eretz… — He who takes upon himself the yoke of Torah, Hashem removes from him the burden of government issues and the burden of parnassah. And if someone throws off from himself the yoke of Torah, Hashem loads him with the burden of government and the burden of parnassah.” History has proven this mishnah to be true. There are countless stories in our long history where Yidden were distraught about government decrees, such as their sons being drafted into the army, and after tzaddikim advised them to learn Torah, they were miraculously spared from this burden. The Sochatchover, the Avnei Nezer, was regularly turned to for help in this area. He would always quote this mishnah: “If you are mekabel to learn Torah with hasmadah, it can’t be that you, a ben Torah, will end up in the army.” It can’t be. These were his words. Someone once showed him his son’s kunteres of chiddushim, crying, “Look, this is what my masmid son wrote, yet he has been drafted to the army!” The Avnei Nezer browsed through it and said, “A bachur who can write such a shtickel Torah will not end up in the army. It can’t be.” True to his word, there was some mixup at the enrollment, and when the officers couldn’t locate the bachur’s details,

he was given an exemption. As a yungerman, Reb Eizikel Ziditchover was drafted into the army. He was skinny, weak and totally unfit to serve — while he was clearly destined to greatness in Torah. His family tried to dissuade the authorities from enlisting him based on his fragile stature, but much as their claim made sense, the authorities still insisted they wanted him, as though they had an agenda. Indeed, at that time, the maskilim, the Reform movement, was making problems for the religious Yidden. They understood that the chassidic courts were infusing their young men with a deep passion for Yiddishkeit and wanted to stop it in its tracks, so they bribed the authorities not to give exemptions to any young boys with the surname of Eichenstein, Hager and Rokeach, which were then the leading chassidic families in the Galicia, so that the main rebbishe courts would be lost to Yiddishkeit. The particular army base where Reb Eizikel Eichenstein ended up was greatly in debt, so the commander announced that whoever raised the given astronomical sum would be granted an exemption. Of course, Ziditchover chassidim scrambled determinedly to put the amount together, and their future Rebbe was released. Incidentally, years later, when Reb Eizikel was Rebbe, chassidim used to bring him a pinch of snuff to enjoy. Often the snuff was a product from Hungary, having been smuggled in without taxes being paid. The Rebbe was very particular when it came to dina d’malchusa (the laws of the land) and was known not to benefit from anything acquired underhandedly. But the “shmek tabik” he would indulge in. A chassid who knew of the Rebbe’s meticulousness with law respectfully questioned his use of the taxevaded snuff. “As a yungerman, I paid enough tax in advance to last a lifetime,” answered the Rebbe, referring to the money he had to raise for his army exemption. In another story that illustrates this point, Rav Sholom Schwadron was once in Vienna, where he met Rav Yaakov Teitelbaum, a talmid of Rav Meir Arik. Rav Schwadron told him that when a bachur would come to his Rebbe, the Chofetz Chaim, to receive a bracha that he not be drafted into the army, the Chofetz Chaim would ask around thoroughly about the bochur. If he’d get good information, he would repeat this mishnah, “Kol hamekabel alav ol Torah, maavirin mimeni ol malchus,” and they wouldn’t end up in the army. But if he would hear that the boy was studying in college or not immersed in learning, he would give the boy his sefer Nidchei Yisroel, a sefer he wrote specially for soldiers, which would sadly convey what the boy’s fate would be. Rav Teitelbaum told Rav Schwadron that his own Rebbe, Rav Arik, used to do the same thing. When a bachur came to him for a bracha to escape being drafted, Rav Arik would say, “If you learn full-time, you will not be drafted.” And Rav Teitelbaum shared a story he personally encountered. It was a few months after the annexation of Austria and Germany, and a woman came crying to him desperately that the Gestapo had arrested her son.
Rav Teitelbaum didn’t feel worthy of giving his own advice, but he asked what his Rebbe used to ask. “Does your son sit and learn?” She answered negatively, saying he was studying. Rav Teitelbaum said, “Can you promise me that if your son returns you will send him to a different country to learn?” It was a great demand, but she promised without hesitating. After all, it was her son’s life at stake. “In that case, according to what my Rebbe used to say, your son will be freed.”
“A bachur who can write such a shtickel Torah will not end up in the army. It can’t be.” She was infused with such a sense of bitachon that she marched off to the Gestapo headquarters, knocked on the door, and boldly demanded to speak to the commander. “Give me back my son!” she yelled at him, confident at the results her tirade would bring. “What’s your son’s name?” he asked. Ten minutes later he brought her son to the door and said, “Take him.” Without delay, she had him shipped off to Eretz Yisroel to learn. In the merit of his mother’s brave commitment to send him away for Torah — and she had only made a kabbalah! — he was spared from the Nazis. As the mishnah guarantees, being mekabel alone is enough. In the end, not only was he spared, but he was also the only family member to survive the war. The aforementioned examples depict scenarios of how hasmadah in Torah granted Yidden exemption from ol malchus. However, we see in history that many Amoraim and Tannaim who learned Torah were not particularly relieved from the burden of parnassah; Rav Yochanan Hasandlar was a shoemaker, Rav Shmuel was a doctor, Rav Karna was a winemaker, Rav Chisda and Rav Papa had a brewery, and there were many more of the same. This begs the question, which the mefarshim indeed ask: Why did these unparalleled talmidei chachamim have to work for parnassah when the mishnah promises otherwise? If we look at the mishnah carefully, however, we will note that it doesn’t say that one who learns will not have to work at all; rather, it says that the hardship, the burden of work, will be removed from him. To quote the Rabbeinu Yonah, a person won’t have to do “a lot of work” for parnassah; with only a little effort he will see hatzlacha and earn enough money. Rav Sholom Schwadron would share the following story on this mishnah, which fascinatingly consolidates the fulfillment of both parts of the mishnah: the removal of both ol malchus and ol derech eretz — government and parnassah. He once met a ger tzedek in Monsey who was a great talmid chacham. Before he became frum, he served in

the U.S. army, until he became wounded in action. He was granted the relevant generous disability benefits, and every six months he had to appear before the veterans’ office to see if he was still eligible. Sitting at home, unable to do much, he took to studying to fill his time. He stumbled upon Yiddishkeit, immersed himself in it, and eventually he was megayer. He spent his days delving deeper into learning, relishing the experience. Because he was deriving so much emotional and academic fulfillment from his learning, it impacted his physical well-being, and he became healthier. At his next veteran review, they saw him looking much better and decided he was no longer eligible for the army stipends; he was fit for work. Since he loved his newfound calling, the news came as a disappointment, and he appealed his case unsuccessfully a few times until it reached the highest court of the U.S. army. The judge took one look at him and asked him why he was challenging the medical expert; he indeed looked fit for work. “Your Honor,” he told the judge. “I don’t work because I am busy studying.” “What are you studying?” the judge asked. “I’m studying to be a talmid chacham.” ‘Ooooh! A talmid chacham?’ exclaimed the non-Jewish judge, clearly impressed. “During World War I,” the judge proceeded to share, “I commanded a submarine, which is the most arduous duty. It’s miserable. You are cut off the world, deep under the
ocean, for months on end. At one point we didn’t surface for an entire year. Most of my soldiers were depressed, and I had to think long and hard for ways to keep them upbeat. But there were three soldiers in my unit who were religious Jews, and they were always in a good mood. One day I passed their cabin, and I heard them singing. I couldn’t fathom how they could be so buoyant, so I walked in. They were sitting around their bedside table and studying. I asked them what they were studying. They tried to explain what the Torah was, and I had a hard time grasping it, but they said they were studying to become a talmid chacham. “You were in the army, but you were wounded in action. Now you want to become a talmid chacham. That’s a great

Cell Phone Coverage Finally Coming to Palisades Dead Zones? Driving on the Palisades Parkway and Route 6 heading to or from the Catskills, you may or may not hit traffic along the way, but one thing is for sure: Your cell phone coverage will drop near Harriman State Park. But that issue may soon become ancient history as in a joint press release issued last week, Senator David Carlucci and Senator James Skoufis announced that cell phone towers are currently under construction in Tomkins Cove and in Bear Mountain, welcome news to both motorists and to hikers. The new cell towers were long overdue, said Carlucci, who has heard from first responders that the dead zones can delay an accident report by as long as fifteen to twenty minutes, a time delay that can prove deadly. “We need this project expedited by Verizon to ensure public safety,” said Carlucci. The problem was further exacerbated this spring and summer as thousands flocked to the Anthony Wayne Recreation Area at Exit 17 on the Palisades, home to Rockland’s official coronavirus testing site. Woodbury EMS volunteer Deborah Vobroucek told Fox 5 NY that the dead zones have been problematic not only for motorists and hikers, but also for first responders. Seeing work beginning on the two towers has come as a huge relief, said Vobroucek. “We know that if somebody is in trouble, they can call us, they can tell us where they are, and we can get to them,” said Vobroucek. But Carlucci has remained skeptical even as work has begun, and he urged area residents to call Verizon to make sure that the job proceeds on schedule. Verizon told Fox 5 NY in a statement that if all goes well, the towers are expected to be completed by the end of the calendar year.
Changing Change Policies at Some Retailers Because of National Coin Shortage The coronavirus outbreak has brought incredible change all across the globe, but for many retailers, it is a different kind of change that is proving to be a problem.

With people staying home and businesses remaining closed, coin shortages have arisen in numerous places, prompting some stores to take unusual action, reported CNBC. The Kroger supermarket chain made headlines when it announced that it would no longer be giving change to cash-paying customers, instead offering them the choice of rounding up their purchase to the nearest dollar and donating the difference to a local food bank, or loading the amount owed onto a customer loyalty card, which could be applied to future purchases. The problem isn’t only affecting Kroger stores. Walmart, CVS, 7-Eleven, Wawa and Starbucks have all been encouraging customers to use credit cards, debit cards or exact change to pay for their purchases, and some 7-Eleven stores are reportedly offering free Slurpees to customers who exchange $5 in coins for paper money in the same amount. The Federal Reserve created a U.S. Coin Task Force this month to address the coin shortage, explaining that coins are typically circulated at stores, banks, laundromats and when used for train and bus fares. With so many of those operations closed for weeks because of the pandemic, less coins are being put into use, creating the problem. “It’s not that there aren’t enough coins in the country anymore; it’s just that they’re not in the right place,” said CreditCards.com analyst Ted Rossman. “It’s a supply chain
thing — so many of them are lying around either in our homes or in businesses that are closed, and they’re just not really where we need them right now.” Rossman recommended bringing accumulated change to the bank, or to use it for in-store purchases in order to alleviate the problem, which may manifest itself differently in areas of the country where COVID-19 infection rates and closures vary. “Kind of like the path of the virus itself, there’s some human behavior that could help or hurt this,” said Rossman.
FDA Recalls Toxic Hand Sanitizers Hand sanitizers were one of the hottest items this spring when the coronavirus outbreak exploded, but in recent weeks, alarming warnings have emerged regarding products that, far from keeping users safe, can actually prove deadly. The list of hand sanitizers that have been recalled by the Food and Drug Administration had grown to nearly seven dozen different products by last weekend, reported CBS New York. While the products claim to contain ethanol, tests have revealed that they contain methanol, or wood alcohol, which can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested. “When COVID-19 came along, you know, trusted brands went out the window for products in demand like hand sanitizer, and we took what we could get, and what you get is a lot of foreign-made hand sanitizers that do not have quality ingredients,” said CBS News medical contributor David Agus. Eleven people have reportedly died, and more than two dozen were hospitalized, after drinking the affected hand sanitizers, some of which were sold at major stores, including Costco, BJs Wholesale Club, Sam’s Club, Walmart, Target and CVS. Miami Herald reported that among the contaminated products were Scent Theory hand sanitizers sold at Walmart’s Suffern, Monroe and Monticello stores, and Born Basic Anti-Bac Hand Sanitizer sold at Target. In a bulletin released earlier this month, the FDA warned consumers not to drink hand sanitizers of any kind and to be wary of misleading claims that any product could provide hourslong protection against viruses. The FDA also noted that any product labeled “FDA-approved” should be avoided, since it does not approve any hand sanitizing products, and further advised anyone in possession of recalled products to dispose of them in hazardous waste containers instead of pouring or flushing them down the drain.

Recap: During the cleaning and packing frenzy, Elisheva and Eliyahu decide to try selling the old, broken cuckoo clock. In postwar Bratislava, Janek tells Ulush that Gustav will be traveling to Eretz Yisroel illegally with the rest of the orphanage; their family, however, will be going to America instead. Edo’s ship arrives in Eretz Yisroel. “I’m calling about the cuckoo clock you advertised that you’re selling?” “Okay?” Elisheva was getting tired of these phone calls. The day after tomorrow, the day before Bedikas Chometz, was moving day, with Hashem’s help, and she didn’t know where she would get the energy for this final stretch. Perhaps it had been foolish to try to sell the clock; it was a shame they hadn’t just dumped it. Her father, remarkably, had not displayed any particular sentiment for it. “You can throw it out,” he’d replied when she asked him, on the day he was released from the hospital. Of course, he had returned to the nursing home. He was weaker than he’d been when he left from there, but he was healthy, baruch Hashem. “I understand that it needs some repairs, right?” “Yes.” “So, what’s the problem?” “Something with the balance of the gears.” “It doesn’t work at all?” “No. Sometimes the cuckoo bird pops out and chimes, but it’s rare, and we have no idea what causes it to happen.” Meir entered the empty kitchen, mouthed something to her in a whisper, and then suddenly blushed and fled outside.
“How much do you want for it?” “Two hundred and fifty shekels.” If someone would come and show interest in the old clock, they could always knock down the price a bit — that’s what Eliyahu had told her. But so far, no one had expressed serious interest in it at all. “And how much should a repair cost?” “A few hundred shekels, we believe.” “What’s a few hundred? Like, two hundred or more like eight hundred?” All right. Enough. The next time someone called about the clock, she would say it was the wrong number and they were not selling anything. What was it about a cuckoo clock that triggered the imagination of people reading the advertisements? “Probably something in between,” she replied, with commendable patience. “Hmm… Okay, maybe we’ll come by this evening to see it. Where do you live?” Where do you live, and when are you home, and would it be okay if we came after midnight, and we’ll pay for delivery… Finally, the conversation came to an end. She boiled up some water in the kettle — one of the few items that remained out of the boxes — and that’s when she remembered that she’d planned to go over to the new house tonight to cook for yom tov. But she just couldn’t now. No. Not after

she spent the morning with her father to make sure there were no side effects from the new medication he was taking, and then sent half of the house over to the new apartment, and then spent three hours there directing the movers to put the furniture into the right rooms, and then discovered that two of the fluorescent lights had been shattered because a piece of furniture had been manhandled without care. And then, after all of that, she’d found half a cookie on the clean, kosher-for-Pesach kitchen floor. But, of course, none of the children who were there with her knew whose cookie it was. Obviously. So she’d carefully swept it up, and checked to make sure there were no crumbs on the counter or in the cupboards, and then she’d forbidden anyone from going in there. She’d go tomorrow morning to cook in the new house, b’ezras Hashem. That meant she’d need to leave clear instructions and perfect order here, in this apartment, so that the kids could work without her. She took the milk out of the fridge and made herself a coffee. Someone peeked into the kitchen. “Meir?” She smiled. “Are you bored? Do you want to come help me prepare pajamas for the little kids?” “Okay,” he replied, still quite red-cheeked. “What were you telling me before, when I was on the phone?” she asked. “Oh.” His cheeks reddened even more. “You said on the phone that you don’t know why the cuckoo bird pops out suddenly, every so often. But I do know.” “You know?” Elisheva looked at Meir. The eight-year-old nodded abashedly. “You know what makes the clock suddenly start working?” “Yes.” “What is it?” “Me.” “You?” He tittered. “My ball.” She stirred the light-colored

liquid in her paper cup. “What does that mean?” Meir spread out his hands. “Every time I play with my ball and it bounces over the door of the clock, the cuckoo bird comes out and crows.” “I’m not sure we say that it crows; it’s a bird, not a rooster.” Elisheva didn’t know why, of all the possible answers, she’d chosen this one. Maybe it was because she didn’t know what to say to the delusional story in the first place. How could a ball get a cuckoo bird to pop out and crow, or tweet, or whatever it was? What, the bird got annoyed at being woken up from its deep sleep? It just didn’t make any sense. “I’ll show you,” the boy offered. “I’m just going to get my ball from downstairs.” He was back a few minutes later. “I’m not totally, totally sure that this is what does it, because sometimes it happened a few hours after I threw the ball, but whenever I heard the bird cuckooing, it was after the ball had hit there, right under the red thing.” They went into the dining room. Meir stood opposite the clock, closed his left eye, and then tossed the ball. Boom. Direct hit. But nothing happened. “Remember that first time I heard it cuckooing one night? Was that also because of the ball?” Elisheva stared at the small, closed door, and then at her son. “I came in here to check what it was, and I don’t think you were up.” “I was up.” Again he reddened, from his forehead to his chin. “I also remember that time, because it was the first time I hit the mark. And then I pretended to be sleeping.” “And there was another time when the older kids were eating supper, but it was very, very late at night.” “Yes, that was when the noise in the kitchen woke me up, and I
was bored, so I took out my ball.” Elisheva looked at the silent clock doubtfully. “I think it once cuckooed in the morning, when you weren’t home.” “Because I was probably playing with the ball before I left.” Just as he finished his sen-
we going to humiliate ourselves for two hundred and something shekels, for this piece of junk? Maybe we should just give it as a gift to the next person who shows up.” Elisheva shook her head, unsure, but no one else came to look at the clock that evening anyway.

tence, the little door opened and out popped the cuckoo bird. “It’s always like that,” he said, with a trace of pride. “It’s like I call it, and it always answers me.” “That’s very interesting.” Elisheva was duly impressed. “I wonder what exactly the ball does to it. We’ll ask Tatty. Maybe he’ll be able to explain it.” “And… you’re not angry at me that I threw a ball at the furniture in the house?” Meir asked hastily. She didn’t have a chance to answer, because just then Devoiry stuck her head into the dining room. “Mommy, someone’s at the door about the clock.” “Let them in,” Elisheva said. “Should I throw my ball again?” Meir asked hopefully. “So they should see that it does work?” “For now, no.” She smiled at him. “Because that’s not really called ‘working.’” The couple who entered actually liked the piece a lot, but they decided that it was too wide for the corner in their home where they wanted to put it. Right after they left, a few more people showed up to see the clock. They all asked lots of questions about it, but the clock was no closer to being sold by the time they all left. “All right, I’ve had enough,” Riki said loudly. “How much are

“So, what did you discover?” “The daughter was here this morning. Sounds like they really want him to come and live with them.” “And what about him?” “Look.” Emmanuel hesitated. “At his age, moving is no simple thing. He loves his family, but is probably afraid of change. He’ll be with them on Seder night, though.” “I see. So, is there anything else you can tell me about him and his family? Something you heard, conversations between them…?” “Could be, let me think for a minute. Actually, there was something interesting…” “I’m waiting patiently…” said the man on the other end of the phone. “Wait… give me a minute to remember. What was it? His daughter asked him about something, and the old man —” “Wait. Before you continue trying to remember...” His voice was authoritative. “Yes?” Emmanuel asked obediently. “Don’t call him ‘the old man,’ at least not to me. He’s about my age, so it’s not very polite of you to do that.” “You are forgetting, sir, that I have never seen you, and you also haven’t told me how old you are.” “That’s right. I am not complaining or accusing you; I am just making a request.” To be continued...

Trump Announces Cancellation of Jacksonville RNC Convention THE PULSE: President Trump announced that the
RNC would be canceling its Jacksonville, Florida, Convention. The RNC had planned to move much of the convention from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Jacksonville. However, due to rising COVID-19 cases in Florida, the decision was made to stick with a limited and toneddown convention in Charlotte. President Trump will accept the Republican nomination in person at the convention. The DNC also announced that its convention scheduled to be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, would be a mostly virtual event. Joe Biden is also expected to
44 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / July 29, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
accept the nomination in person. THE IMPACT: In early June, the RNC announced its in-
tention to move the convention to Florida. At the time, it was perceived as a political win for first-term Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. DeSantis had received high marks for his handling of the coronavirus in his state. However, as the summer progressed, Florida became a leading viral hotspot. Many became critical of DeSantis and his handling of the pandemic. The most recent data from Florida has indicated a plateau in new cases and a decline in hospitalizations. However, Trump and the RNC decided that they must set an example. Holding a convention under such circumstances could expose many people to unnecessary risk and would likely send the wrong message to the American people.
Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) Face Tough Primary Battles THE PULSE: Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Ilhan Omar (D-MN) are two progressive members of the so-called four-person “squad” that includes them, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Ayanna Pressley (D-MA). The squad members have received much criticism for their controversial positions regarding Israel. Both Tlaib and Omar are facing intense primary challenges. Tlaib’s primary is scheduled for August 4. She is facing stiff competition from Detroit City Council President and leading black activist Brenda Jones. In the 2018 primary election, Tlaib defeated Jones in a six-way race. However, this year, it is only a two-person race, and Jones has received the endorsement of the other four 2016 candidates. Omar’s primary is scheduled for August 11. She is being challenged by Antone Melton-Meaux. Melton-Meaux is running as a candidate who is opposed to the hyperpartisan environment of Washington, D.C. In the second quarter, he outraised Omar at $3.2 million to $472,000. He currently has $2 million cash on hand. The race is also a two-person race, which is seen as potentially detrimental for Omar. THE IMPACT: Many conservative Republicans have sought to portray “the squad” as the new face of the Democratic Party. Recent wins by progressives Jamaal Bowman and Mondaire Jones in New York have served to bolster that argument. However, some progressive candidates, such as Arati Kreibich, have gone down to stinging defeat. A primary loss by a member of the squad could serve to blunt the argument that the Democratic base has become radicalized and challenge the narrative that radical elements are the future of the Democratic Party.
THE IMPACT: Top law enforcement officers such as Attorney General William Barr have sought to differentiate Operation Legend from the federal law enforcement activity that took place in Portland. The Justice Department announced that it would coordinate with the Department of Homeland Security and investigate the “use of force” allegations against Justice Department personnel in Portland during Operation Diligent Valor. Barr has insisted that agents dispatched as part of Operation Legend will work in tandem with local officials and will be there to aid and assist local officials battling violent crime.
Trump Says He Regrets Some of His Messaging THE PULSE: In a recent interview, President Trump expressed regret over some of his messaging. “It used to be in the old days before this, you’d write a letter, and you’d say this letter is very big. You put it on your desk and then you go back tomorrow, and you say, ‘Oh, I’m glad I didn’t send it,’ right?” the president said. “But we don’t do that, right? We put it out instantaneously, we feel great, and then you start getting phone calls: ‘Did you really say this?’ I say, ‘What’s wrong with that?’ and you find out a lot of things.” THE IMPACT: It is unusual for Trump to express regret
over his actions, so his feelings on this matter are most telling. Recently, Trump has received harsh criticism over some of his messaging, and some platform companies have labeled his comments as misleading and manipulated media.
Trump Announces Operation Legend THE PULSE: President Trump announced that he would be sending federal troops to American cities to battle violent crime. The operation is named “Operation Legend” after LeGend Taliferro, a four-year-old child who was killed in his sleep on June 29 in Kansas City, Missouri. Trump announced that he plans to send the FBI, U.S. Marshals, DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) and ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) to American cities to help local law enforcement fight the “sudden surge in violent crime.” Trump announced that he intends to send federal agents to Kansas City, Albuquerque and Chicago. The operation comes on the heels of Operation Diligent Valor, a controversial decision to deploy federal agents to Portland, Oregon, which was met by much local resistance.

Vanilla Crunch Explosion
Blood Orange Champagne Sparklers
Quick and easy, yet so delicious. This is a dessert that looks and tastes like something you worked on for a while, even when you didn’t — and best of all, the flavors go really well together.
So simple to create, and the results are so delightful to the palate. The unique tang of the blood orange comes through wonderfully in this refreshing dessert!
Ingredients
2 cups blood orange juice (juice of about 6–8 blood oranges)
1 box pareve sandwich ice cream 1 pareve spray whip
Ingredients ½ cup sugar 1 T. lemon juice
2 cups crushed cookie crumbs
1 T. orange liqueur (optional, but adds great texture and flavor)
Caramel syrup
1 bottle white sparkling grape juice (or champagne)
Chocolate syrup Viennese nut crunch
Directions
1 package baking chocolate
1. Juice the blood oranges, and add sugar and lemon juice. Place mixture into a small saucepan and warm over medium heat. Stir frequently, until the sugar dissolves. (You don’t want this mixture hot, only warm enough to dissolve the sugar.) Add orange liqueur, if using.
Directions 1. Melt two to three pieces of baking chocolate, and coat the bottom of a 10-inch round pan. Allow to set. 2. Meanwhile, cut the sandwich ice creams into small, uneven pieces. Distribute over the set chocolate, making sure to tightly cover the entire layer. 3. Sprinkle the crushed cookie crumbs over the ice cream, and top with caramel syrup and chocolate syrup. Finally, spray an even layer of the whip over the entire top layer.
2. Pour mixture into a container and freeze. Once solid (after a minimum of 6 hours), remove it from the freezer. Let it defrost slightly before adding the contents to a blender, and then blend until smooth and creamy. Return it to the container and freeze again. 3. When you’re ready to serve, take a champagne (or any other) glass, and pour in chilled white sparkling grape juice (or champagne, if serving adults) until the glass is half full. Scoop in some sorbet, and serve immediately.
4. Freeze for a few hours until solid, and then cut into wedges. Then freeze again until the wedges are ready to be dipped into chocolate. 5. IT’S 3 A.M., AND I’M AWAKENED BY A KNOCK ON THE WALL OF MY TENT.
I groggily pull on layer after layer, finishing with a one-piece parka jumpsuit, before stepping out of the tent. I’m standing on a glacier, the Arctic Ocean visible around a mile away. Overhead, the sky is twinkling with a million stars, and curtains of green and purple light are shimmering across it — the aurora borealis, or the northern lights. It is my turn to patrol the campsite for polar bears. The temperature is minus 40 degrees. My name is Moishie Hersko, and I’m a landscape and wildlife photographer and extreme adventure organizer. I’d spent a few years running photography workshops all over the world when I noticed that more and more non-pho-
tographers wanted to join these trips. Eventually I started Kosher Horizons, which arranges exotic kosher trips to the world’s wild places — whether for photographers or anyone wanting an epic adventure.
That’s how I found myself leading a group of some of the most incredibly adventurous frum men to explore the island of Svalbard, which is as close to the North Pole as it is possible to get. Earlier in the week the group had flown to Longyearbyen in Svalbard, the northernmost town (and airport) on Earth. Most of Svalbard’s population of 2,000 live here, where they are outnumbered by around 3,000 polar bears. It is illegal to leave the settlement without a gun, and doors are kept unlocked so you can run into the nearest building should you come across a polar bear on the street. That morning we met our guides, loaded up our snowmobiles, and headed into the wilderness. Within minutes we had left the last vestiges of civilization behind; there were no more roads, cell phone service or even people

around. We snowmobiled over frozen rivers, between mountain passes, and on glaciers and the sea ice. Polar bears are the only animals that will actively hunt a human for food, and so we needed to be prepared should a bear get too close. That’s why our guides carried high-powered rifles designed to bring a bear down with one shot. See-

ing a polar bear in the wild is an absolutely amazing experience, but we needed to find the balance between watching them and not getting close enough to become dinner. Setting up camp was an adventure unto itself. We needed to find a spot on the glacier that was free of crevasses, or giant snow-covered cracks. We set up the sleeping tents and the heated main tent where we would eat, relax and daven. Our sleeping bags were specially rated for the Arctic and would keep us warm even while the temperature dropped to minus 40 degrees that night. As we were warming up dinner on the fire, the northern lights suddenly appeared above us. The sky shimmered with curtains of greens, pinks and purples, moving slowly and constantly changing shape. This was a sight that will stay with me forever. And all throughout the night, there were the polar bear patrols. In ones and twos, we marched in circles all around the camp, keeping an eye and ear out for any approaching bears. Our guides were asleep but prepared to come running, rifles drawn and ready,

The Falklands! A place I’d wanted to go to forever, but I knew it would likely never happen. The ownership of these islands, only a few hundred miles off the coast of southern Argentina, is hotly disputed between Argentina and the United Kingdom. The Falkland War of 1982 ended in a decisive (yet bloody) British victory, so there are no flights from Argentina to the Falklands.
Therefore, the only commercial flights to the islands take off from Santiago, Chile — and wouldn’t you know it, they only fly on Shabbos. But man plans and Hashem laughs, and so I found myself one fine Wednesday morning standing on a street corner in the Falklands teaching Yiddish to a former Canadian Prime Minister. It had all started a few days earlier. I was taking a group of over 50 Yidden on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Antarctica. Our ship was scheduled to depart Ushuaia, the southernmost city in Argentina, for Antarctica on Monday morning. But when word came of a fuel shortage at the port, we had to scramble for alternatives. We found out that Stanley, the capital of the Falklands, had a large

supply of fuel, and so we decided to detour. Sure, it would take at least an extra day to get to Antarctica, but not only would we solve our fuel issue, we’d also get to explore a bit of the Falklands! Since the Falklands are so isolated, there are a great number of rare birds present on the islands that are not found anywhere else. There’s also a very interesting aftereffect of the 1982 war that involves the local birds. To this day, there are still countless mines just offshore, and the waves are constantly spitting them out onto the beaches. This makes the beaches around Stanley extremely dangerous, so for nearly 40 years, not a single human being has stepped foot there. The local wildlife, however, is too small to set off the

Traveling to remote areas near the poles poses a unique set of halachic challenges, primarily in regard to dealing with zmanim. Before setting out, it is important to consult with a rav well versed in these halachos to make sure that everything is upheld to the highest standards. The closer you get to the north and south poles, the stranger the zmanim become. For example, in Iceland in June, the sun doesn’t set until a few minutes before midnight. When does Shabbos begin? More intriguingly, considering that it never gets completely dark, when does Shabbos end?
Sign warning about the mines
Once you hit the Arctic or Antarctic Circle, things get even more complicated. The circles are the point where, for at least one 24-hour period each year, the sun does not rise at all in the winter or set in the summer. Farther north, like in Barrow or Svalbard, it is dark for months on end in the winter and light all summer.
There are many shittos about what to do in this situation. Some hold that every 24-hour period is a new day, some hold that you base the zmanim off your city of departure, and the Minchas Elazar famously holds that each sunrise is a new day, which means that at the north and south poles you’d have six years of weekday and one year of Shabbos. These shailos generally began having practical implications when Jews were sent to the Siberian gulags, far above the Arctic Circle. But when it comes to leisure trips, pretty much all poskim agree that the shailos of zmanim beyond the circles should simply be avoided. Based on this psak, I only travel to the Arctic in the few short weeks a year when there is a proper day and night. On the other hand, in places like Iceland and most of the Antarctic Peninsula, the sun sets but it doesn’t get fully dark. Here the situation is far simpler. While there are still many different shittos about the exact details, one can easily be machmir and keep even the most stringent zmanim. For instance, the time Shabbos began when we were in Antarctica varied by about 45 minutes between the shittos — but it’s easy enough to just bring in Shabbos early. This led to a very unique Shabbos in Antarctica: We began the seudah at around 10:30 p.m., finished it at around 1 a.m., and then… davened Shacharis, since chatzos was also the netz! On Motzei Shabbos, we had shalosh seudas, Maariv, Havdalah, Shacharis, and finally melaveh malkah — all before 1:30 a.m.

mines, so there are giant penguin and other bird colonies living in peace on those beaches. Most of us spent our time exploring the area of the beaches and enjoying the wildlife, and after a while, I headed into town for a bit — and ran into Stephen Harper. Stephen is the former Canadian Prime Minister and famous for being a tremendous friend of the Jews. He worked tirelessly for Jewish causes while in office and currently heads an organization comprised of former world leaders who all strive to make the world a better place for us. Mr. Harper and his wife had been on board our ship to Antarctica (not as part as our kosher group, of course), but so far I hadn’t had much of a chance to interact with him personally. Now he was standing on the street in front of the Stanley general store, and we struck up a conversation. We spoke about his work, and he mentioned how people often assume that he’s Jewish. He was proud to know a bit of Yiddish, and asked me how to say certain phrases. His cheses weren’t very good, but we were able to achieve a passable “vos machstu” all the same... I never dreamed that a frum Yid could have the chance to visit the Falklands. I certainly couldn’t have imagined that I would end up there one day with a large group — and even teach Yiddish to a former world leader. BA R ROW, A L A S K A

Climbing a pressure ridge at Point Barrow

What better time to visit the northernmost spot in the U.S. than in the dead of the winter? Barrow, Alaska (also known by its Inuit name Utqiagvik), is the farthest north you can get in the United States. No roads lead here, and the Arctic Ocean surrounds the town on three sides. The sun doesn’t rise for
months in the winter, and the midnight sun is up all summer. I visited in February, when the sun slowly returns, casting its weak glow for a few short hours during the day. Most of the 4,000 residents are Inuit and have lived here for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. This is one of the only places where hunting whales is still legal, as the Inuit have been doing so for generations. We wanted to visit Point Barrow, a thin spit of land that juts out a couple of miles into the Arctic Ocean, north of town. The tip of this point is the actual northernmost spot in the United States. The whole area, however, is off-limits to those who are not Native Alaskan or their guests. So we went hunting around town and found an old Inuit whaler with a snowmobile and a sled. One of us got on the back of the snowmobile, the others piled into the sled, and with a length of frayed rope, our arctic transport was all set. We covered the five miles or so to the point at top speed, the sled skidding crazily behind the snowmobile as we watched arctic foxes run into their dens in the ice. The point itself is a barren, windswept place, with nothing in sight but towering pressure ridges and gigantic whale bones. We climbed one of the pressure ridges — miles-long piles of jumbled ice around 20 feet high, which get piled up when the wind shifts the frozen ocean — and saw only ice and more ice. It was an aweinspiring spot to daven mincha — literally in the middle of nowhere. It was nice and warm as well, only minus 39 degrees,
Arctic fox in the Point Barrow ice
which was a whole degree warmer than Svalbard! The airport in Barrow — a tiny, one-room affair — is a busy place. There are no other ways of getting people, goods and equipment into town. Our group was getting a fair bit of attention, though, as we were the first tourists to visit in months. As we were waiting in line for security, a TSA agent suddenly called out, “Hey, are you guys from Boro Park?” I first thought I was hallucinating, but it turned out that this agent working security in Barrow had grown up — of all places — on 48th Street and New Utrecht. Talk about coming full circle.

IF
you’re old enough to remember the massive Skulener seudas hoda’ah that took place every year, you’ll surely recall the bumper-to-bumper traffic heading upstate on Motzei Shabbos Nachamu. Slowly the cars would inch forward, everyone headed in the same direction. As each group would near the place where the seudah was being held, they’d be greeted with the throb of soul-lifting music. It was impossible not to feel connected with Hashem that night. Despite the beauty of the event each year, not everyone knows the circumstances behind the establishment of the seudas hoda’ah... Harav Eliezer Zusia Portugal, the alter Skulener Rebbe, zt”l, was a wanted man, guilty of the crime of feeding the bodies and souls of Jewish children, of giving broken hearts a home. And there were many broken hearts. After the Malach Hamaves had made his way through Europe, reducing flourishing communities of leibedige Yidden to ash, the remnants sought to build again. Out of the shadows they emerged, emaciated Yidden who were living proof that Am Yisroel chai. Many of the survivors heard of the Skulener family, whose doors and hearts were open wide, and made their way there. One by one, they were lovingly welcomed in as new members of the family.
A COLLECTION OF CHILDREN Though there are thousands of fullfledged members of the Portugal family who walk the earth today, only a small percentage of them are biologically related to the Skulener mishpacha. Yankele, an integral part of Skulen, was one such child. When he was only five years old, little Yankele was witness to one of the many horrors of the Holocaust: Yiddishe kinder being brutally rounded up to be taken away, most certainly
to their deaths. A teenage neighbor who was fleeing with her younger siblings noticed the frightened little boy and hurriedly told him to come along with them as they attempted to escape. Dashing toward a passing train, they all jumped on board, not knowing where they were headed. Eventually, the group of terrified children heard the announcement for the town of Chernowitz, and the girl suddenly remembered that she had an aunt there. As soon as the train stopped, she grabbed her young siblings and jumped off, without realizing that Yankele was being left behind. The little boy scrambled down from the train and tried chasing after them, but his small feet could only carry him so far. He found himself standing alone in a field, the tears coming thick and fast. “Yingele, why are you crying?” a passerby asked. “Where are you going?” “I don’t know,” he answered between sobs. “If you don’t know, then I know,” she answered, and promptly shuffled him off to the Skulener household. As soon as the door was opened, the little boy was surrounded with warmth. Everyone rushed to welcome him, hugging the little boy as if he were a long-lost brother — because he was, wasn’t he? The alter Rebbe’s wife, Rebbetzin Sheina

Rochel, fed the starving child and then asked him what his name was. When she heard that his name was the same as her father’s, she exclaimed that she would put him to sleep in the alter Rebbe’s bed that night, which wasn’t being used. (During the day, the alter Rebbe tended to the community’s needs and the needs of the children in his care. It was only in the wee night hours that he was able to learn.) Yankele was filthy from weeks of not being bathed, and he was full of lice, but he was so exhausted that the Rebbetzin wasn’t going to bother him with a bath before he went to sleep. As she tucked him into her husband’s bed, she asked this little yasom if he would like her to be his mother. He answered yes. And so it was with nearly a thousand yesomim who arrived at the Portugal home. Young Yankele wasn’t even the youngest of the bunch; the orphaned and adopted children ranged from the pitiful age of two and up. In the town of Chernowitz, where the Portugals spent the war, 60 to 70 children lived in their personal home. Taking care of the orphaned children was only a part of the alter Rebbe’s responsibilities; the entire spiritual welfare of the large community of Chernowitz was under his guidance. Having assumed rabbanus at the young age of seventeen in the small town of Skulen, the alter Rebbe had been encouraged by the Sadigura Rebbe, who recognized his
greatness, to move to Chernowitz — a much larger community — and take over there. A special bracha had been uttered by the Be’er Mayim Chaim that Chernowitz, which had alternated hands between the Romanians and Russians, would see less suffering during the war. And
around the corner because they hadn’t celebrated Purim. Despite her many responsibilities of running an enormous postwar household and playing a prominent role in the reestablishment of the community — aside from the simple fact that Pesach was on the horizon! — Rebbetzin Sheina Rochel rolled up her sleeves and began baking mishloach manos for the children to gift one another. She also fashioned costumes for each child to wear. Only once the children were emotionally settled, having celebrated “Purim,” did she finish her yom tov preparations. Eventually, as more and more children arrived, it became impossible to house everyone in one house, so the Rebbe secured buildings to serve as a boys’ home and a girls’ home. He also established a cheder as a foil to the only other Jewish school in town, one that rejected the tenements of Yiddishkeit in favor of secular Zionism. Through sheer brilliance and simchas hachaim, the Rebbe was able to draw the children from the secular school to his cheder by infusing the children’s education with happiness and song. As the children from the secular school saw how much fun the children in the cheder were having, they began to migrate there until, eventually, the other school had no students and was forced to shut its doors. Anyone who knew the alter Rebbe would describe him as a malach Elokim, for what he accomplished could be said of few, if any, other people.
He knew that those who entered the Romanian prisons were hardly ever seen again.

so it was: The Portugals and much of the community survived intact. In 1946, the Portugals and their adopted children moved to Bucharest, where many more orphans of the postwar era found their way to the Skulener family. One group of children arrived extremely close to Pesach, but refused to believe that yom tov was right
Despite his lofty soul, he humbly brought himself down to the children’s level in order to make them feel special, to make them feel like they had a father. He was so active in the children’s lives that he would even write scripts for them to perform as plays. One of these plays was actually attended by communist officials who came to observe how the cheder was being run. They were surprised by how professional it was. But the life- and soul-saving activities of the Portugal family didn’t fit well with the communist agenda that sought to make hardened non-believers of the Yiddishe kinder. For that reason, the alter Rebbe was viewed as an enemy of the regime.
CRIMINAL ACTIVIT Y Postwar Romania was a complicated place for Yidden, for although the Romanians professed allegiance to the Soviets, they did so in a hidden manner. On the world stage, Romania played the role of non-communist country, but in truth, communism was forced upon the populace with an iron fist. To play the role to perfection, shuls and batei midrashim were allowed to be open — but religious people frequently disappeared, never to return again. Families that had survived the nightmare of the Nazis were ripped apart, the parents murdered and the children sent to Trousnitzer lager, reeducation camps, where they underwent psychological and physical abuse in order to be brainwashed to ensure loyalty to the communist regime. The Portugals, of course, could not stand idly by as Yiddishe children were forced to give up their Yiddishkeit. The alter Rebbe, brilliant as he was, somehow managed to learn the laws of the land, enabling him to save many Yiddishe kinder from falling into the communists’ hands. One of the laws was that if a person was somehow related to a child, he was able to claim custody of him or her. So he would constantly be at the station to meet the trains, even on Shabbos, where he would wait together with a

minyan and greet the children coming off the trains. Every child had someone to claim him; even if they never had met each other before, they would become relatives in that instant. There were also times when they simply pulled children out through the windows and brought them home. The communists, of course, were not oblivious to the activities taking place under their noses. The everbustling household was under close scrutiny. One day, Soviet officials knocked on the Portugals’ door, interrupting the davening that was taking place in their in-house shul. When the alter Rebbe came to speak with them, they asked him if he was housing any Russian children. “A b s o l u t e l y not,” he insisted. “These children are all Romanian citizens, and relatives of mine. And,” he promised, “if we ever come across any Russian children or children who don’t find any family, we will certainly bring them to you.” Seeing his solemn face and seeming compliance, the officials decided that he was to be taken seriously and left him alone that day. In that era, it was impossible to know who was friend and who was foe. Anyone who entered the Portugal house — and there were many who entered — may have been an undercover Soviet agent, even if he were ostensibly a frum Yid. Thus, every soul saved led to an increased risk of denouncement.
It didn’t help the alter Rebbe’s record that he’d spent the war years establishing secret connections to save Yidden from systematic murder. Having received a special dispensation that granted him the permission to earmark Yidden as being “important” to the community and worthy of preservation, he was thereby able to earn many a reprieve from death. Of course, every Yid was important and he marked them
last time, they came after the alter Rebbe’s only biological child — who would eventually be his successor, as well — the heiliger Rebbe, Harav Yisroel Avraham Portugal, zt”l.
CAPTURE When the communist authorities first set out to arrest the rebbes, their eyes were blinded, preventing them from seeing that which was directly in front of them. On one occasion, they came looking for the Rebbe, and though he passed them in the stairwell, they didn’t notice him. Despite several miracles such as this one, the decreed moment finally arrived, and both the alter Rebbe and Rebbe were arrested, though in two different locations. The Soviet thugs came for the younger Rebbe in the darkness, as thieves in the night — stealers of living beings. While his young children lay quaking under their covers, they took him away, ruthless in the face of the family’s angst. Before he left, the Rebbe approached his children, who were still quite small, and let his tears flow over them. “Daven, children! Ask, ask, ask that the Ribbono Shel Olam will let us see one another again,” he enjoined them. He knew that those who entered the Romanian prisons were rarely heard from again. And then, all too soon, he was gone. It wasn’t the first time he’d been arrested; the Rebbe was, in fact, no stranger to the brutal ways of the

But every chazan would also need a teacher to bring out the best of his talents, and an assistant, as well... In this way, the alter Rebbe was able to save countless Yidden, for whom he would also secure passports before shipping them out of the inferno. Secret connections, a constantly growing household, and outright promotion of Yiddishkeit was too much for the communists to swallow. To that end, the alter Rebbe was arrested multiple times. The

communists. In shanah rishonah he’d already gotten a bitter taste of the prisons in Soviet-satellite Romania. His young wife, Rebbetzin Raizel, had also been arrested, and though she’d emerged alive and had borne him a child shortly after her arrest, she’d become crippled from the harsh treatment she’d had at the hands of the Soviets. Unlike the many laws that govern civil arrest in democratic countries, brute strength and torture were the rule of policing in communistcontrolled Romania. When the Rebbe was taken, they had plans to use him as a tool to break his father, the alter Rebbe, to force him to admit that he was a spy for America. Upon arrest, the Rebbe was thrown into the back of a car where three people sat on him to hold him down: one on his head, one on his feet and one on his body. They drove that way for hours, the Rebbe struggling to breathe. Little did he know that the hours he spent in transit were actually hours spent going in circles. He and his father were imprisoned in a location only a few blocks from their home, but they never saw each other, and all contact with the outside world was impossible. The resha’im kept them in small, underground cells without any windows or artificial light. The rebbes were only able to determine how many hours had passed by the rotation of the guards. They both kept two days of Shabbos to make sure they hadn’t
made a mistake in their calculations. Though they were kept separated, there was one time the Rebbe heard a cough that sounded like his father’s, so he coughed in return. Another cough answered. Eventually, the guards realized that they were coughing too much, using it to communicate, and they moved them farther away from each other. Every few days the guards took the rebbes out of their cells to be tortured, attempting to force them to
ing double the beatings because his father was too weak to tolerate as much abuse. Common forms of torture included banging the Rebbe’s head repeatedly against the cement wall and clamping his fingers in the door; anything to cause him suffering, anything to cause his mouth to open. Between rounds of beatings, the brutes would show the Rebbe photos, insisting he name the other Yidden in the pictures. But the Rebbe never named a single person. “What, you don’t know who that person is?” they’d insist. And he would reply, “Am I supposed to know every person who is photographed near me?” After many times of not getting the answers they wanted, they showed the Rebbe a picture of his family to test him, believing his brain to have been affected. “That’s my wife. Those are my children,” he said. At that point, they saw he was lucid, and simply unwilling to implicate other Yidden. The torture continued with a vengeance. There was one time that the Rebbe was beaten so severely and for so long that he felt his neshamah about to depart. They’d been jumping on him and whipping him with wide leather straps, giving him one blow after another. When he felt he couldn’t handle more, he raised his hand — which they took as a sign that he was ready to speak, to tell them what they wanted to hear. But he raised it only to allow himself a chance to

The Skulener Rebbetzins There’s a famous saying that goes, “Behind every great man stands a great woman,” but in Skulen, the word “beside” would make more sense. The Rebbetzins of Skulen are powerful women in their own right, bastions of emunah, simcha, tefillah and Torah hashkafah. Featured here is but a snippet of their righteousness.
Rebbetzin Sheina Rochel, a”h The alter Rebbe’s wife, Rebbetzin Sheina Rochel, was the source of bracha that enabled the Portugals to feed and care for so many orphans and Holocaust survivors. By foregoing the opportunity to splurge on furniture and clothing as a newly married woman, choosing instead to save the windfall she’d been gifted for greater things, she was able to purchase wagonfuls of food after the war, which she dispersed freely to other Yidden. They would line up by the hundreds, coming to collect raw foodstuffs and cooked meals alike, and her door was always open for those who needed a place to stay. Because of the heiliger Rebbetzin, thousands of yesomim were blessed with a doting mother, and because of her, they’ve gone on to raise beautiful doros of frum Yidden. take a breath; his mouth remained firmly shut, other than to tell his torturers to send his body home, so sure was he that his time was over. “Not even your ashes will be sent home!” they replied. At that moment of intense tza’ar, instead of the Rebbe’s neshamah going up, a niggun was sent down. The Skulener Rebbe is known for having composed thousands of niggunim in his lifetime, all of which are so spiritually moving that even the most removed-fromYiddishkeit Yid can appreciate the depth of them. Bitchu Bashem, the niggun that came to him during the interrogation, is such a leibedige niggun that it is hard to believe it came at a moment of such intense pain. Baruch Hashem, this niggun and many more niggunim were taught to the Skulener kehillah in the following years of freedom. Though they underwent nearly six months of bodybreaking beatings, neither the Rebbe nor the alter Rebbe ever said something that would incriminate another Yid. Being moser nefesh has long been the hallmark of Skulen; doing it with niggun and simcha even more so.
ON THE HOMEFRONT While the rebbes were imprisoned, the Soviets kept a close eye on the rest of the Portugals and their contacts. Yidden were afraid to even walk in their vicinity, worried that they, too, would be arrested. Neighbors would circle the entire block to reach their homes just down the street, because if they had any connection to the Portugals, they would surely vanish as well. The one exception was when it came to davening; Yidden would enter the shul, daven, and then scurry home. One Erev Shabbos, a chashuve rav from America who’d been on his way to Russia to perform brissim showed up in Bucharest, having heard of the heiliger Skulener Rebbe and desiring to meet him. He’d made travel plans that he assumed would allow him to spend Shabbos with the Rebbe. The heiliger Skulener Rebbes, however, were in jail. When Rabbi Harry Bronstein showed up at the door announcing he was an American rabbi who wanted to be their guest, Rebbetzin Raizel asked him if he had permission from the city. Not aware that his American citizenship played perfectly into the accusations against the rebbes, Rabbi Bronstein didn’t realize that he was ostensibly putting the Portugals — and himself — into greater danger. The Soviet tails that had followed him imprisoned Rabbi Bronstein overnight, but released him when they realized that he’d never had contact with the Skulener family in the past. They also allowed him to daven in the Portugals’ shul that Shabbos as planned. When he entered the shul, Rebbetzin Raizel fol-
Rebbetzin Raizel, a”h The heiliger Rebbetzin Raizel, wife of the Rebbe, zt”l, was the cornerstone of the Portugal home, supporting the family with her internal strength while the rebbes were imprisoned. When her husband and father-in-law were taken away, she went to the Chief Rabbi of Romania and gave him the code of law that the officers had said they were being arrested under. The rabbi sent her to consult with a certain lawyer who knew the ins and outs of the Soviet legal system. When the Rebbetzin paid a visit to the lawyer, he leafed through a book, leaving it open to a page detailing the type of crime and the punishment for it, and promptly left the room. He couldn’t bear to be there when the young wife read the statement about her husband and shver. Execution upon capture was the punishment for the crime of which the rebbes were accused. Rebbetzin Raizel was overcome with shock — as could be expected upon learning such tragic news — but after the initial reaction wore off, she firmly resolved to not share what she had read. She refused to accept that this was their fate. Exiting the building, Rebbetzin Raizel was approached by one of the adopted Skulener children who had accompanied her, and he asked her what she’d learned. “They’re coming home, maybe still today!” she exclaimed. And then… she promptly fainted. Once she was back on her feet, she headed home to encourage the rest of the family, telling them that the rebbes would be home soon. For the many weeks of imprisonment, Rebbetzin Raizel stoically put on a smile, convincing the family — especially her mother-in-law, who’d already suffered from several heart attacks and was at risk of another in the face of difficult news — that the rebbes were on their way home. She continued to prepare for Shabbos as she always did, as if the rebbes would be joining them for the seudos. She even made Yud-Beis challos every week for both of the rebbes while they were imprisoned. She told Hashem, “Bashefer, I’m not taking anything away from You, from Your Shabbos. Please don’t take anything away from me!” From time to time, Soviet thugs — six or seven huge men at a time — would stop in to the house and threaten the Rebbetzin, saying they would beat her, too. B’chasdei Hashem, the rebbes returned home and were even blessed with a new member of the family, the newborn Rebbezin Nechamah Klughaupt — another Skulener bastion of strength — who was one week old when they were released.

lowed, picking up a siddur and whispering along. Rabbi Bronstein looked around, but couldn’t find the rebbe he’d come so far to see. Confused, he began to daven. When the minyan reached the bracha of matir assurim, the mispallelim broke into bitter sobs, weeping for their Rebbe and his son. Rabbi Bronstein realized that something serious had happened. He walked over to the Rebbetzin, and they carried on a hushed conversation while acting as if they were in the midst of prayer. As soon as Motzei Shabbos arrived, Rabbi Bronstein flew to England and made an uproar that the world could not ignore. Because Rabbi Bronstein had brought the plight of the Skulener rebbes into the public eye, rabbanim the world over began engaging in activism on their behalf. Eventually, the tumult became so loud that Dag Hammarskjöld, Secretary General of the United Nations, issued an ultimatum to Romania: Release the Portugal family, or else…
RELEASE The rebbes had been arrested on Rosh Chodesh Nissan, and it was Shabbos Nachamu when they were approached by the Soviet guards, who told them they’d have to sign a paper because their release was imminent. Both rebbes, separately, answered that they would not sign on Shabbos. It was only on the following Monday that they were escorted from the prison. Even their release, however, was done in a manner that inflicted pain upon them. Because they’d spent months in darkness, their eyes weren’t accustomed to light, yet they were cruelly put out onto the street at high noon, causing them to be blinded by the sun. They stood there in the street, shielding their eyes, without even knowing where they were. Through hashgacha pratis, a Yid who’d broken his foot and was on his way to a nearby doctor to have it casted saw the rebbes at the side of the road. At first he didn’t recognize them, even though he — along with all of Romanian Jewry — had been thinking of the rebbes constantly, praying for their release. Both were skeletal from months of subsiding on only a daily cube of sugar, the only kosher

food they’d had, aside from a few matzahs that had miraculously made it into the prison. Moreover, the Rebbe’s beard had been savagely ripped from his face, and though the alter Rebbe did have a beard, he was so gaunt that his kappel fell down the front of his emaciated head, all the way to his nose. When the man with the broken foot finally realized who they were, he shuffled them into the car and drove them home, where they were blessedly reunited with their family.
OUT OF THE IRON CURTAIN It was Rosh Chodesh Nissan — exactly one year after the rebbes were arrested — that ten members of the Portugal family were allowed to leave Romania. As the family stood ready to depart, a large part of the Romanian Jewish community stood in the airport, crying bitterly over the fact that the alter Rebbe was leaving them. Before he entered the plane, he turned around and said, “I’m not going for me. I’m going for you.” When the plane carrying the Portugals touched down in Belgium, they were greeted with a magnificent scene, replete with live orchestra music. In his unassuming manner, the alter Rebbe asked who had just arrived that was deserving of such a kabbalos panim, not realizing that it was himself! As soon as the alter Rebbe could, he asked for a telephone to begin working on behalf of the Romanian Jews. He didn’t stop working until the entire community — even those who were not religious — were allowed to leave Romania. The impact the Skulener Rebbes have had on worldwide Jewry is vast, and no words can truly do it justice. THE SONG OF SKULEN CONTINUES Though we are now bereft of both rebbes, Harav Eliezer Zusia and Harav Yisroel Avraham Portugal — the heiliger tzadikim who did so much in their lifetimes — the song of thanksgiving lives on through the rebbes newly appointed in place of their heiliger father. Walk in to any Skulener beis midrash on Motzei Shabbos Nachamu, and you’ll hear niggunim that come straight from the Heichal HaNeginah — niggunim that were granted to the previous Skulener Rebbes.

What goes into planning a large Shabbos getaway at a local resort or hotel? In honor of Shabbos Nachamu, The Monsey View explores what goes on behind the scenes. It’s an observation every frum balabusta eventually stumbles upon: No matter how early or late the Shabbos zman falls, and regardless of how much effort is exerted in advance, every Friday afternoon will be similarly hectic at home, with the sun’s slow descent matched by an equally predictable rise in tensions. It’s a phenomenon as much a part of Shabbos as kugel and gefilte fish. If this is the case for small families in the comfort of their own home, imagine what things must be like for those charged with coordinating a large Shabbos retreat in one of the many beautiful resorts surrounding the New York metro area! Dozens of staff members, hundreds of guests, thousands of plated dishes, and an infinite amount of logistical matters need to be

seamlessly arranged in preparation of a Shabbos to remember. With Shabbos Nachamu upon us, we reached out to Moshe Wercberger from Class Catering to learn more about what goes on behind the scenes as a large Shabbaton comes together. Mr. Wercberger and his wife have been running such weekends for a number of years and have become one of the go-to destinations for those planning a Shabbos get-together for a corporation, kehillah or family simcha. “I have a unique job history,” Moshe says. “I worked my way up from being a chef in a yeshivah, went to culinary school while working another job, and now oversee the cooking, party planning and accommodations for all of our events. This distinctive edge gives me a bird’s-eye view of the entire operation and minimizes the potential for significant mishaps.” His words are not just empty boasts. A review of the industry shows that most event organizers leave the field after a couple of years, and there isn’t a rush of competitors eager to join in on the action. The difficulties of planning these Shabbatons are multifold. First, it’s hard work to logistically pull it all together. Taking pressure well is a must. Second, public events don’t always sell out, and even the leaders in this field often take a loss or barely break even after putting in endless hours of work. Third, the choice of hotel or resort can make or break the most meticulously planned retreat. To illustrate: Some venues tolerate rowdy children, making them the right fit for Shabbos Hagadol or Nachamu; others provide complete privacy, making them suitable for schools or yeshivos; and yet other venues make smaller rooms available, providing a perfect match for couple-only retreats. There are high-end resorts and affordable hotels; those with good mattresses and those that have motion sensor lighting; cooperative kitchen staff and those who don’t like outsiders and mashgichim with large fire torches invading their space. Pairing each client or public event with the right host is an art, and the biggest determiner of who succeeds in this field. Mr. Wercberger says that he will often turn down a job if he can’t find the perfect venue because it is imperative to make sure that the fit is right; many Shabbatons have turned unpleasant when hotel staff pushed back against the large number of children jumping around in the lobby. Mr. Wercberger makes sure to point out that this isn’t caused by hatred or bigotry; rather, hotel staff often isn’t used to seeing
this kind of activity and are overwhelmed by such scenes. Inconveniences like these can be avoided with proper foresight, though. Another common misconception: Organizers or customers often feel that since the hotel is receiving such a large piece of business, they should be more accommodating toward their guests. The truth is, however, that most of these

businesses butter their bread by hosting corporate conferences that are scheduled months in advance along with serious deposits. While they certainly appreciate a full weekend, they often look at it as a bonus, and not as part of their core business model. Being an experienced event planner teaches you that sometimes the little things are actually pretty big. Planning a Shabbos Nachamu event for a crowd of yungerleit clad in shtreimels, bekishes and talleisim, in an older hotel with a weaker A/C system, might really put a damper on the experience. Mr. Wercberger relates a story of a Shabbos Chanukah event where the hotel would not allow any Chanukah or Shabbos candles at all. With the local fire marshal being an unaffiliated Jew who was stumped as to why light bulbs wouldn’t suffice, it took many nerve-wracking hours until a solution was reached right before Shabbos. Each Shabbos sees a unique lineup of entertainers and baalei tefillah, but in conversations around the industry, I’ve

learned that this aspect of planning is generally outsourced to agents who help arrange such packages. Mr. Wercberger tells me that for his events he always requests heimishe, ehrliche singers and baalei tefillah. “I feel like I have an achrayus; after all, it is Shabbos, an inherently ruchnius time.” Mr. Wercberger, with his rich culinary background, insists on preparing all the food himself, circumventing the need of hiring an outside caterer. One of Class Catering’s strongest brand identities is the abundance of the most delectable meats served at all of their events. Those who count themselves as red meat connoisseurs consider Mr. Wercberger’s

It’s where those long nights spent in culinary school are put to good use on behalf of lucky attendees. When Mr. Wercberger is asked how far in advance events need to be booked, he sighs and says, “I’ve had people call me the very same week of their planned Shabbos, but it’s really hard to pull it all together on such short notice. I would generally recommend at least one and a half weeks’ time for 100 percent guaranteed satisfaction.” At the same time, event organizers can often launch a public event and sit around impatiently waiting for people to book at the last minute. The very first event that Class Catering hosted was one such occasion. It was the Monday before the event, and only 12 people had booked rooms. Since the venue in question hadn’t asked for a deposit, Moshe was seriously thinking of canceling the Shabbaton, but his wife encouraged him to stick it out. Tuesday saw another 12 registrations, and by the time Shabbos came around, 95 rooms had been booked. The next event a fortnight later saw 195 rooms reserved, and the rest is history. Class Catering has since built a reputation for Shabbosim that provide the best of both worlds. With no social media presence and a focus on heimishe events, Class Catering finds itself today truly in a class of its own!

RALEIGH HOTEL A LEGENDARY CATSKILLS ESTABLISHMENT IS REVIVED AS A FRUM VACATION DESTINATION Whether you pronounce it RAW-lee, rally or rah-LAY, there’s no telling the story of Yidden in the Catskills without discussing the history of the iconic Raleigh Hotel. Built in 1937, this sprawling resort is a living monument to the transformation of the mostly secular Borscht Belt into a center of 21st century frum Yiddishe life. Kosher-style has been replaced by kosher, the hotel casinos have made way for hotel shuls, and the nightly sounds of secular entertainment are but a distant memory where Yiddish simchos and modesty now proudly reign.
HISTORY The Ratner Hotel was established in 1937 on a farmhouse called the Evergreen House. The relatively small boarding house was one of the countless resorts that were built in the first half of the 20th century to provide summertime refuge to Jewish families living in crowded neighborhoods in sweltering New York City. Before the availability of air conditioning, before airfare to other climates were just a click away, and before Jews were allowed to frequent upscale resorts without facing discrimination, tens of thousands of families would travel upstate every summer for vacation. Children would play outside while adults were plied with food and entertainment that are the stuff of legend to this day. In 1947, the hotel was bought off by the Cherkoff family together with their son-in-law Mannie Halpert, and it was promptly renamed the Raleigh Hotel. They slowly expanded the resort, situat-

ed on a 200-acre property, until it became a premier 320-room destination with limitless food, recreation and entertainment options. In its heyday, some of the most prominent music bands and comedians of that era performed at the thriving Raleigh Hotel, and in the 1960s, the resort went from being a seasonal, summer operation to a full-fledged year-round resort. The Raleigh Hotel (then pronounced RAWlee, like the city in North Carolina) was smaller than some of the massive resorts of that era like the Concord in Monticello or Grossinger’s

in Liberty. This meant that Mr. Halpert was perpetually tight in money, forcing him to do much of the construction and maintenance by himself. This turned him into a handson owner whom visitors adored. The resort’s smaller size was a blessing in disguise, though. When the Borscht Belt began to decline later in the century, the largest resorts were forced to shut their doors while this modest operation was able to continue along. But when Mr. Halpert passed away in 2004, it was only a matter of time before the hotel met the fate of so many similar establishments.
RALEIGH HOTEL RALLIES BACK The Raleigh Hotel closed its doors in 2005. The next year, under the leadership of a prominent member of the Bobov community, it was bought off for $5.1 million dollars, according to publicly available information. As we will see, this was not so much a business investment as it was an opportunity to provide a quality service to members of the general community. Under new management, the hotel reopened the following year as a small operation. Guests were able to rent a room for a quiet Shabbos upstate near Camp Shalva and close to a number of other heimishe colonies and camps. Slowly and incrementally, the process of rebuilding the resort commenced. Piece by piece, the wings of the hotel were renovated into rooms that offer comfortable, more modern amenities. The lobby and main areas were beautifully rebuilt, and the process of expanding the structure into a hotel suitable for heimishe families was underway. Fourteen years later, the hotel boasts a $2 million shul investment; one of the largest sukkahs in the world with a full awning; simcha halls; a rav of its own; Shabbos and yom tov programs year-round; a high-end restaurant; day camps; a kollel, and much more. Most impressively, its management isn’t close to done yet. In addition to the main hotel building, a number of cottages were built on-site, which offer vacationers more privacy and space.
With the property covering around 200 acres, its management has in recent years launched a massive development project, with 230 winterized homes being built and sold to individuals who wish to own a vacation home close to all the action. The detached and semi-detached apartments of Venetian Villas will make up a little village of their own, but while offering the benefits of being near this popular resort.
THE HEIMISHE VACATION DESTINATION The Raleigh Hotel today is unique in its operations and success. It’s not a hotel that’s rented out and kashered for a Shabbos, and it’s not an amateurish camp operation. This is a bona fide resort owned, operated and managed by heimishe individuals catering to the needs of heimishe families. The hotel rabbi, R’ Mordechai Schiff, resides there throughout the summer and heads the popular on-site kollel while also leading the yamim tovim davening and seudos throughout the year. Over the years, a number of nostalgic visitors whose families used to vacation at Raleigh Hotel have come by to reminisce about that bygone era. Their testimonies have made their way into the outside world as they shared their positive impressions of a Jewish world surviving and thriving. A member of the hotel staff shared the story of a secular Jewish visitor who was unaware that the hotel was under new management and had come up to book a stay. When he arrived and realized his error, he thought he would be unwelcome and prepared to return home. The management, however, urged him to stay for a Shabbos where he donned a yarmulka as he joined the tefillos and his wife lit the Shabbos licht. He has since returned for multiple visits with his family, and his Jewish spark has been rekindled. The Shabbosos, yamim tovim and summer stays at Raleigh have received universal praise from par-

ticipants for their authentic heimishe flavor — culinarily, and more importantly, spiritually. The summer months in particular see a number of prominent community members who choose this warm place for their vacation. Among the annual visitors is a well-known chassidishe talmid chacham suffering from ALS who is hosted by the Raleigh management for a few weeks every summer. During his stay, rabbanim, roshei yeshivos and yeshivah bachurim flock to the hotel to visit with him and hear the uplifting messages of chizuk he delivers through a specialized machine. His presence alone has led the owner to confide more than once that “this is why I own and operate this place.” On a more materialistic level, the remodeled resort offers everything family members of any age might want during their stay. This commitment to excellence is especially evident to those who remember the hotel in its previous, rundown form. But all generations have come to appreciate Raleigh as not only a premier vacation spot, but also a community center that hosts Shabbatons, dozens of weddings annually, conventions and individuals who enjoy the many available amenities. With the hotel entering its busiest stretch of the season, the manager tells me, “You know customers are happy when they keep on coming back. Our proudest testimonial is that families keep on returning year after year!” And with thousands of families nodding in agreement, the best is yet to come for the Raleigh Hotel and a grateful Jewish community.

Here are some destinations between Brooklyn and the Catskills to break up the travel time and give passengers a well-needed break on the way up.

Tourism today is one of the largest and most profitable industries across the globe. While most tours generally boast natural or man-made sensations, some involve strange and unusual experiences. So when planning your dream vacation, you may want to (or not!) consider the following before planning your itinerary. MEXICO
NORTH KOREA
BORDER CROSSING TOUR
LABOR TOUR
This seven-and-a-half-mile trek over desert hills takes its passengers through a mock border crossing between Mexico and the U.S. Rather than a fun attraction, this trail is designed to deter would-be immigrants from attempting to cross the border. It includes various border crossing obstacles like crawling through barbed wire, run-ins with violent drug smugglers, and dodging the many border patrols.
You could be missing out: Kim Jong Un has invited tourists to help support his famine-stricken country! His official tourism industry is limited to this attraction only and includes rice planting, weeding and fruit picking alongside forced laborers! Bad news for Americans: You’ll have to find another way to enjoy some grueling labor during your vacation, as the State Department recently banned Americans from visiting North Korea.
LONDON, ENGLAND
RUBBISH TRIPS This one has yet to get onto my bucket list. During this tour, willing, paying participants get to experience the “sounds and the smells of the city’s waste” as they’re taken on a two-mile walk past historic dumps and landfills. Personally, I think you can get that same experience by walking down the sidewalk a night before trash pickup.

CALIFORNIA
CRAWLEY, ENGLAND
CREEPY TOURS
SPACE TOUR
Specializing in showing off sites of true crime, vanloads of tourists get to see firsthand murder locations and follow the route each killer actually took while approaching and leaving the crime scene. A joyous and peaceful retreat!
Join the astronauts hovering midair! Although NASA is not yet a space travel agency, you can now enter a space plane for a two-and-a-half hour journey that will give you the opportunity to experience the realms of outer space. It goes up to an altitude of about 62 miles, which is just about at the edge of our atmosphere. At the right moment, the pilots will shut off the rocket motor, allowing those on board to leave their seats for several minutes of true, unencumbered weightlessness. The pilots will also maneuver the spaceship to provide their guests with the best possible views of Earth and the blackness of space. You might want to swell your pockets before booking a flight, though, as the price for a single ticket is $250,000.
HOLON, ISRAEL
NEW YORK
A BLIND EXPERIENCE
THE THING TOUR
Book tickets three months in advance, and make sure to arrive on time for your appointment. Now you must remove your glasses and drop your phones in a box, because for the next hour or so, you will grope through life blindly while your sightless tour guide leads the way in the dark! Gingerly feel your way along a remarkably disorienting tour through staged environments — including a boat, a fruit stand, a snack bar and a kitchen — all in pitch black and experienced by touch and sound only. You’ll spend time enough in the dark to get a tiny inkling of what it must be like to be blind. All in all, a fascinating experience.
Visit Mmuseumm — simply pronounced museum or myoo·zi·uhm, to be exact — located in an abandoned elevator shaft in NYC! It boasts a collection of random objects, each of which may or may not have an unexpected narrative behind it. The first rule, it seems, is that no art is featured; the museum displays only “overlooked, dismissed or ignored” items. The framed exhibitions include either random things, like personal possessions found in the Pacific or a plastic glove from Paradise Valley in Montana, and some other more interesting artifacts, like the shoe thrown at George W. Bush at the Minister’s Palace in Baghdad.
