WHAT A HISTORY! (Re: Down the Country Roads) It is fascinating to read about the history of the colonies that until recently I viewed simply as part and parcel of the Catskills summer scene. We took it for granted that they are where they are and have been there forever, and it is eye-opening to read how the early heimishe settlers really hustled and planned and laid the groundwork for the bustling Yiddish scene of today. Thank you for your beautiful work. A Reader

NOT SOMETHING TO RAVE ABOUT (Re: Cover/The Wilds We Love, Issue 46) The article detailing one family’s cross-country trips was an interesting read. Since we (parents and children ages eight and over) have taken a couple of interstate trips — even some in an RV — I feel it is in place to comment on the inappropriateness of the caption on the cover that described this article. One important aspect of these trips is not to “rave about” it! These trips are about family quality time, teamwork, meeting other Yiddishe kehillos (when attending minyanim), and seeing the wonders of Hashem. It’s not about impressing the neighbors! A Traveler

Eretz Yisroel, I visited the museum of the blind in Holon. It was an amazing and enjoyable experience, and most of all, I learned a lot. The tour taught me to truly appreciate our precious eyesight more than ever before. Thank you for the rich content always! S.H.

FASCINATING — FROM THE COUCH (Re: Exploring the Epic, Issue 45) I was really fascinated to read about the group of frum travelers who visit the most far-flung and exotic places. The pictures were breathtaking as were the experiences Mr. Hersko shared. While I can’t fathom what would possess someone to willingly sleep near polar bears in minus 40 degrees, joining them on this trip virtually was a delight! Happy at Home

(Inbox, Issue 45) As a teacher, I try to avoid the school supplies–shopping stress by providing my students with everything they need for the year. I send home a letter clearly stating what I will be providing and asking for a set amount of money that is to be placed in a marked envelope. I try to purchase quality items at low cost, and this often necessitates my visiting several stores. Although most reactions are positive, I have also experienced two interesting phenomena: • Some parents want their child to “stand out” and not have cookie-cutter supplies, so the child then brings totally inappropriate articles to school. A student does not need an unasked-for item; I can guarantee he will play with it in the middle of class, lose it or break it. • Some parents reason that since the teacher has already purchased the supplies

before the school year, they surely wouldn’t exclude their child when distributing the supplies, so they never send the money (no, I would not leave a child out due to their parents’ negligence), even after repeated requests. Then there are children who throw coins and bills onto my desk, and somehow the total never adds up to the right amount (maybe some quarters rolled away?). If you’re lucky enough to have a teacher who offers this service, please know that this is not a money-making venture on the teacher’s part — on the contrary. And also keep in mind that if a teacher asks for a book bag, please do not make do with a shopping bag. A School Supplies–Shopping Teacher

A FOOD COMPILATION? Thank you for publishing an amazing magazine! It’s enjoyed weekly by our entire family. Although we’re now in August, I’m already thinking about yomim tovim and planning the baking for Sukkos and Simchas Torah. However, while I try to clip most of your recipes and keep them in one place in the kitchen, they keep getting lost and scattered. Perhaps The Boro Park View readers should be invited to share opinions on the matter of a cookbook with all of your recipes divided in categories: meat, dairy, pareve, challos, etc.? I think a majority of your readers would absolutely love the idea of a pamphlet with all the recipes featured up until today. I really hope you consider something like this very soon for us to enjoy! YOUR VOICE BUYER BEWARE I recently purchased a “kosher” phone for our fifteenyear-old son from a company who advertised locally. However, when the phone arrived, I saw that it had unfiltered access to the internet! When we were not able to block the internet satisfactorily, I tried to cancel the account with the company, but they wouldn’t take the phone back. At first they did cancel my account, but they then reopened it on their own and kept billing my card. Besides the fact that they sent us a non-kosher phone, endangering my family, I was horrified by their dishonesty. Customers, please take this very seriously and check your phone before finalizing the deal to make sure you are not being fooled. M.W.

EDITORS’ BULLETIN

CORRECTION (Re: A Cautionary Tale, Inbox, Issue 47) We’d like to issue a correction to the letter that appeared in our Inbox last week detailing a customer’s negative experience at Chase Bank. After speaking with the personnel at Chase and clarifying the issue, it came to light that the experience had been misinterpreted by the customer, and what had occurred is as follows: The customer requested a cash advance, and as the teller processed it, the machine that dispenses cash ran out of bills. The teller handed the customer her cash and then collected the remaining funds from a different cash box. We regret that this publication was the platform for wrongful reporting and are confident that customers will continue to have only positive experiences at Chase Bank.

K

'‫פרק ה‬ ‫משנה כ"א‬

“Kol hamezakeh es harabim ein chet ba al yado, v’chol hamachati es harabim ein maspikin b’yado laasos teshuvah. Moshe zacha v’zikah es harabim… — All who inspire others to do good will not come to sin, while those who cause others to sin will not merit the opportunity to do teshuvah. Moshe Rabbeinu was mezakeh es harabim…” Indeed, by teaching Klal Yisroel the Torah and making himself available for his people at all hours, Moshe Rabbeinu was a mezakeh es harabim. The Gemara says that he didn’t merely teach and inspire; he did so out of his ayin tov. He did not begrudge Klal Yisroel to have more mitzvos and sought ways to achieve that, even though it was at the expense of his own growth and personal avodas Hashem. Rav Avrohom Kalmanowitz, Mirrer Rosh Yeshivah in America, related that he initially didn’t want the position of rosh yeshivah. He preferred to spend his days learning and shteiging rather than being hindered by looking after bachurim. But he changed his mind after receiving the advice of one gadol who told him the following: A cobbler produces shoes of high quality, but the handmade process is time-consuming, and he only produces a few pieces each week. A factory, on the other hand, churns out shoes of lower quality, but produces a much greater quantity. Thus, although a factory’s profit margin is smaller, in the greater scheme of things, they generate a much larger profit than the skilled cobbler. Similarly, the many times the Rosh Yeshivah might have finished Shas on his high level could not compare to the many thousands of times his talmidim — and their talmidim — would finish Shas. True, the learning may be on a lower level than his own, but it would come with far higher accumulative profits. The importance of being mezakeh es harabim, of sharing one’s zechusim with others, is demonstrated in the following story told

by Rav Yonasan Eibeshitz himself. Rav Yonasan told of how he received a dowry of 3,000 golden coins from his father-in-law so he could sit and learn without worry. During that time, a monastery was built in the densely populated village of Yidden, infuriating the kehillah. One night, a Yid climbed the spire and broke off the tzelem, but he was caught and not heard from again. A guard at the monastery revealed that the Yid was languishing in the dungeons awaiting a death sentence, and he offered the townsfolk to ransom him for 3,000 golden coins. The townsfolk wasted no time, going from house to house to raise the gargantuan sum. But when Rav Yonasan heard about the man’s plight, he didn’t even want to risk those extra hours or days of collecting. Without even enlisting the kehillah’s support, he promptly dug into his entire dowry, which was the exact amount demanded, and ran to the guard to deliver it. When the townsfolk later came to tell Rav Yonasan that they’d raised the funds and were ready to redeem the Yid, he told them there was no need; the ransom had already been arranged. They wanted him to take the money back from them, because they had all wanted to have a part in the gevaldige mitzvah of pidyon shevuyim, but Rav Yonasan declined, saying he had already paid and acquired the mitzvah for himself. A few days later, Rav Yonasan’s wife commented that she wanted to dip into their savings to cover a few expenses. Nervous about her finding their safe empty, he told her he had to go away for a few days, hoping she’d be appeased about her findings — or lack thereof — by the time he returned. Meanwhile, the priests entered the dungeon and found it empty, and they immediately suspected the guard. He realized his life was at stake, so he gathered his wealth and belongings, hid it inside a barrel of oranges, and lugged it to Rav Yonasan’s house where, in his absence, he was met by the rav’s wife. “The priests want my life for releasing the Jew,” he said. “I have to run away immediately. I am leaving my wealth with you because I have never before met a person like your husband

who so easily parted with his entire savings just to save another person. In case they do get me and I don’t return alive, I want my money to end up in your husband’s righteous hands.” Rav Yonasan’s wife now understood why the safe was empty. Shortly thereafter, she heard that during the manhunt for the guard, he fell into a lake and drowned. The fortune in the barrel was theirs to keep. When Rav Yonasan returned home, she greeted him elatedly. “I know what

ished speaking, he thanked the Chofetz Chaim and told him that the rav was profoundly mechazek him in his emunah. The Chofetz Chaim expressed his delight, saying he had hesitated about coming to town, but hearing that he’d inspired another Yid in emunah was worth all of the physical difficulty he’d endured, because there was nothing greater than being mezakeh es harabim. In fact, by the Chofetz Chaim’s keynote speech at the great Knessia Gedolah in Vienna — an encounter many of us are familiar with from the historic footage made public a few years ago — he addressed the rabbanim about their duty to be mezakeh es harabim when they returned to their respective towns. Later in the afternoon, he announced that he wanted to add a point to his earlier drasha. “You might think,” he said, “that being mezakeh es harabim applies only to great tzaddikim, because how can a layperson inspire others if he himself has room for improvement? But it’s not so. The mishnah says, ‘kol’ hamezakeh es harabim, which means that every little bit with which we can be mezakeh others is precious.” The Chofetz Chaim then shared a phenomenal parable to drive the message home. A governor visited a small village and noticed that the water seemed to be of inferior quality. He challenged the mayor, who said that the pipes were old, causing the contamination. The governor chided him, saying he should be filtering the water to purify it. Heeding the advice, the mayor immediately launched an initiative to fix the problem. Soon after, the governor heard that the town burned down. He called the mayor and inquired why he hadn’t succeeded in extinguishing the fire before it destroyed the entire town, and the mayor replied, “We didn’t have enough filtered water to put the fire out.” “You fool!” cried the mayor. “When a fire burns, you use any water available, even filthy water.” Thus, the Chofetz Chaim wrapped up his message: “A fire is burning; the threats from outside are seeping in and impacting Yiddishkeit. Every person, great or not, has to try to be mezakeh others to put the fire out.”

“Why did Hashem reject my mitzvah?” Rav Yonasan asked. “Why is He throwing it back in my face?” you did with our dowry, but in His great love for you, and wanting to prevent your suffering from this great sacrifice, Hashem already sent us back the money with profits!” She was sure he would mirror her excitement, but to her surprise, he broke down and cried inconsolably. “Why did Hashem reject my mitzvah?” he asked. “Why is He throwing it back in my face? I did pidyon shevuyim with such a sacrifice, but it looks like in Shamayim they don’t want it from me.” He fasted for three days and nights and made a shaalos chalom, al pi Kabbalah, to get an answer. The answer he got was, “You’re right. In Shamayim they did not want your mitzvah because you were not mezakeh es harabim with it.” This shows us that even with the best of intentions and with such sacrifice, in Shamayim it would still be preferable had Rav Yonasan included the townsfolk in his zechus of pidyon shevuyim. A story is told about the time the Chofetz Chaim was already old and frail, and Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski asked him to come speak in Vilna. His family was reluctant to let him take the trip due to his ill health, but the Chofetz Chaim said, “If Chaim Ozer says I should come, I’m going.” During the visit to Vilna, an elderly Yid dropped in to speak with the Chofetz Chaim, and they discussed topics of emunah. When the Yid fin-

Schools Finally Cleared to Open in New York Parents are heaving a sigh of relief after Governor Andrew Cuomo made his long-awaited announcement last Friday clearing schools statewide to reopen this fall, citing low infection rates across the state. All of the state’s 749 school districts have been required to submit reopening plans to the Department of Health and the State Education Department describing how they plan to deal with contract tracing, remote learning and possible infections. School districts will be required to facilitate three parent discussion sessions before August 21 to explain their plans and address possible concerns, with five sessions required in the New York’s biggest school districts to accommodate their larger parent bodies. Also mandatory is a separate session with teachers to ensure that their questions can be heard as well. “We are probably in the best situation in the country right now, as incredible as that is,” said Cuomo. “If anyone can open schools, we can open schools. That’s true for every region in the state. Period.”

Contact Tracing and Potential Fines for High-Risk Travelers as NY Sets Up Checkpoints to Halt Coronavirus First there was Governor Andrew Cuomo’s ban requiring visitors from more than 30 states to quarantine for two weeks upon their arrival in New York. Now, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has

32 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / August 12, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

taken things a step further, instituting multiple coronavirus checkpoints at local bridges and tunnels to trace travelers from high-risk areas, with potential fines of up to $10,000 for those who violate the mandatory quarantine period. With coronavirus cases surging in many parts of the country, both Cuomo and de Blasio have been vocal about the need to protect New Yorkers from potential outside infections. Cuomo began banning travelers from states struggling with COVID-19 in July, the list growing to encompass nearly the entire country, leaving only Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming as “safe states” as of last weekend. Hoping to further beef up enforcement, de Blasio instituted several checkpoints in the city, with personnel from the New York City’s Sheriff’s office and local law enforcement agencies pulling over random out-of-state motorists at the Goethals, Bayonne and George Washington bridges, the Outerbridge Crossing, and the Holland and Lincoln tunnels, as well as travelers at Penn Station and at area airports. Those stopped are being asked to complete travel health forms to facilitate contact tracing, and reminded that they are required to quarantine at home for fourteen days. Anyone refusing to com-

plete the form will be subject to a $2,000 fine, and those who fail to comply with the order can face penalties as high as $10,000. “New York City is holding the line against COVID-19, and New Yorkers have shown tremendous discipline,” said de Blasio. “We’re not going to let our hard work slip away and will continue to do everything we can to keep New Yorkers safe and healthy.”

Absentee Ballot Fiasco Troubling as November Elections Approaches Mayor Bill de Blasio called on the Board of Elections to step up its game before the presidential elections after more than 80,000 ballots cast in June’s Democratic primary, nearly half of which came from Brooklynites, were disqualified due to technicalities. A total of 403,103 mail-in ballots were received in the June 23rd primary, but certified election results released last week showed that only 318,995 ballots were counted, leaving 84,108 ballots out of the final tally. Approximately 30,000 of those ballots were cast by Brooklyn voters, reported the New York Post. Officials said that delayed postal service, missing postmarks and unsigned ballots were to blame for the problems, with a Manhattan federal judge ruling last week that the Board of Elections was required to include late-arriving ballots in its final counts. While that decision is not expected to change the results in any of the June primary races, the entire issue casts a long shadow of doubt over the upcoming November elections, where mail-in voting

is likely to be widely implemented again because of the pandemic. “Americans should not have to risk their lives to participate in the most fundamental right of democracy,” said Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte, head of the Brooklyn Democratic Party. De Blasio called on the Board of Elections to ramp up its efforts over the next three months to prevent similar issues from occuring. “There are whole states in this country that do everything with mail-in, and it works perfectly well,” said the mayor. “It can be done. So, I think what the Board of Elections needs to do is look at exactly where the challenges were and come up with a very systematic plan to address them and be ready for the general election.”

NYC Health Commissioner Resigns, Citing Disappointment in Pandemic Handling A year and a half after taking on the lead role at the New York City Board of Health, Dr. Oxiris Barbot stepped down unexpectedly last week, expressing disappointment that her agency’s experts had not been better utilized to battle the coronavirus outbreak. The Wall Street Journal reported that Barbot’s decision was prompted by Mayor Bill de Blasio’s appointment of the city’s public hospital system, Health + Hospitals, to lead the contract tracing and tracking efforts. The mayor explained his decision in May, saying that as an independent agency, Health + Hospitals would be better able to take on the necessary expansions to implement the tracing protocols that are critical to limiting the spread of the coronavirus. But in her resignation letter, Barbot said that the city failed to take advantage of her department’s disease control expertise, which she described as “incomparable.” “Our experts are world-renowned for their epidemiology, surveillance and response work,” said Barbot. According to Gothamist, Barbot and de Blasio had reportedly disagreed numerous times on the ongoing outbreak, with the mayor suggesting that Barbot be asked to leave. Less than an hour after Barbot announced her official resignation, de Blasio named Dr. Dave A. Chokshi as the city’s new health commissioner. City Councilman and Council Health Committee Chair Mark Levine expressed his regrets in regard to Barbot’s resignation, saying, “It’s a blow to our city’s fight against this pandemic.” Those thoughts were echoed by Ayman El-Mohandes, dean of the CUNY Graduate School of Public Health and Health Policy, who emphasized the need for continuity during the outbreak. “It’s not a moment to create a crisis,” said El-Mohandes.

Recap: A man comes to check out the cuckoo clock, says that the clock is worth much more than 250 shekels, and pays $2,500 for it. The Potolskys are dumbfounded, and Elisheva is nervous about the strange story, especially as it comes on the heels of so many other strange events. The Potolskys move into their new home the next day and prepare to host Elisheva’s father for the first days of Pesach.

Australia “Yes, yes, thank you. Low alcohol, please.” He looked at the clear, red liquid that slowly filled his crystal goblet to the lip. “Right you’re going to let me steal your afikoman?” seven-year-old Benjy asked him cheekily. “Because yesterday my father didn’t let.” “Tell me when exactly you want to take it, and I’ll decide then,” the guest replied with a smile. “Kadesh!” Benjy’s father announced, and placed three square matzos into his tall tiered Seder plate as they all stood up. The guest preferred not to pick up the full glass in his hand, and instead encircled the narrow stem of the goblet with his fingers. His hands were not what they used to be, and he had no desire — even after being a Pesach guest here for fifteen years — to stain the family’s pristine silk tablecloth and make it awkward for everyone. He insisted on staying young, and when those parts of him that refused to remain young emerged, he did his best to conceal them. He drank most of the wine in the glass and leafed through the leather-bound Haggadah on the table in front of him. It was the night of Pesach, the Festival of Freedom, so why did he feel like his brain was in prison? It was roiling with thoughts that kept turning over in his

mind, preventing him from enjoying the company of his devoted relatives. His fingers played with the lace napkin that had been arranged into a fan next to his gleaming plate. He didn’t like the design on the napkin, nor did he like the plate. He also hadn’t enjoyed the Seder the previous night and feared he would not enjoy tonight any more. What was going on? He must be tired. He hadn’t been sleeping well, and he would have to come to terms with the fact that tonight would also end earlier than he would have liked. You get old, that’s how it is. And as long as you stubbornly refuse to take sleeping pills, take into account that your days start at 3 a.m. He set his empty goblet down with the weariness of an old man. He liked Pesach vacation at Daniel’s home in Perth, but although the visit was as pleasant as ever, these things seemed to drain him at this point. He wasn’t twenty anymore, and he needed his bed, his house, his quiet and his privacy… His back stiffened in pain, and he leaned against the back of the chair, unable to move for a moment. He closed his eyes and reflected on the fact that he hadn’t been at the orthopedist for quite some time. He’d never tolerated doctors. “Are you afraid they are going to tell you to write a will?” Alexander Korman would tease

him in those halcyon days when they were both young, busy and successful, and the thought of wills only flashed rarely through their minds, if at all. “And if so?” he used to answer. “Let’s say I am afraid of that. Why can’t I be? Isn’t it my right?” “It’s your right, of course,” Alex — he should rest in peace — would always reply. Your right. Indeed, it is your right to ponder wills very rarely, he told himself bitterly, because you know that if you think about them too often, you’ll get into trouble. As it is, you spend most of your days trying not to think. Not about the past, not about the future, and not too much about the present either. The problem is that when you age — and there’s no denying you are aging — your head automatically fills with thoughts. Unwanted, wanted — they don’t ask permission to barge in. Okay, enough already! It’s Pesach tonight! Be happy! The family in Bnei Brak is also celebrating Pesach happily tonight. Maybe he should send someone to Bratislava to try to dig into the past again. Why not? He had been most pleased with Leonid’s recent work. True, investigations into the present were simpler, but Leonid was very good at what he did. He hoped that Leonid would do a good job of

As it is, you spend most of your days trying not to think. Not about the past, not about the future, and not too much about the present either. meandering through the pathways of the past, which had gone up in smoke, seemingly silenced forever. Again these thoughts?! On Seder night? “I wish you lived closer to us,” Benjy whispered to him as he wiped his lips after emptying his smaller, childsized becher. “I like it when you come to our house. My mother and father like it also.” Really? He was somewhat doubtful about that, but to their credit, he had to admit, they had never tried to get out of hosting him each year. He preferred not to think too much about why they were so devoted to him. Each year, Daniel called a week or two before Pesach and reminded him that they were expecting him for all of yom tov, of course. Getting to Daniel required a domestic flight of just a few hours, and he would spend the whole week of Pesach in Perth. And this year, here he was again. “Urchatz!” Daniel announced. “Uncle and I will wash our hands now.” “I’ll bring the cup and bowl!” Benjy volunteered. He seemed to have adopted their guest this year, and was determined to wait on him hand and foot. As he stood with the towel on his shoulder, polite and patient, he asked, somewhat randomly, “How are you related to us, anyway?” He smiled at Benjy, took the towel off the boy’s little

shoulder, and wiped his hands. Benjy’s mother answered patiently, instead of him. “Stop badgering him with questions, Benjy. It’s a bit complicated to explain. He’s a cousin of Zeidy and Bubby who lived in Eretz Yisroel; you didn’t know the family. And when Arik was in eighth grade, he went on a summer trip to Eretz Yisroel and met him.” “Uh-huh,” twenty-yearold Arik said, from the other side of the table. He yawned. “Can we continue? I’m hungry already.” “A cousin of Zeidy or Bubby?” the boy pressed. “Zeidy. Now go back to your seat. And don’t get the drapes wet when you pass! How many times do I have to tell you that?” The guest sat, paging through the Haggadah in front of him. Drapes. He couldn’t imagine that the family in Bnei Brak had drapes, even for the Seder night. They probably did not have crystal glasses or pure silver napkin holders, either. But he hoped that they had managed to use a bit of the generous yom tov grant that they had received to buy some new things for themselves.

over at the plaster shelves. “It’s a built-in bookcase. What difference does it make what a seforim shrank is made out of? It’s easier to use than the wooden bookcase.” “What’s easier about it?” Yocheved turned to look at her younger brother.

looked up as Elisheva set a mug of hot tea in front of her. “Oy, Elisheva, I told you not to!” “It’s fine; let us host you with the honor you deserve. When do we ever have a chance to have you?” “That’s right. In your old apartment, it was nearly impossible to get into the dining room. So what’s with the furniture? I see your antique table is still here. And the chairs.” “We were supposed to get a table with eight chairs, and another coffee table with a couch and two armchairs,” Eliyahu said. “A coffee table,” she repeated. “Menachem, why aren’t you sitting down? Yehudah, you too. Take a drink or something to eat while I take another look around the apartment.” “The children are showing me the large porch,” her husband, Menachem, said. “I never would have believed there could be such open air in Bnei Brak at this time of year.” “Well, the sixth floor on the outskirts of the city — what did you expect?” she said. “Wait until some more buildings go up here, and you’ll want to run back to your little porch in our house in Yerushalayim.” She turned back to Eliyahu. “So, a coffee table, you said, Eliyahu? Really now. A set of matching chairs sounds good — better than this whole hodgepodge you have here. But armchairs? Why do you need them? And a couch?” “We always had a couch, but it’s old already. And I like this table and don’t really want to replace it. So we asked for only the chairs and the couch, and they let us exchange the rest of the stuff for bedroom furniture — dressers and beds. But they’ll only be coming in after Pesach.” Yocheved conducted another walk-through of the house, which passed without any comments, and then they all sat down in the spacious dining room. “I understand that your father isn’t here anymore,” she said to Elisheva. “No, he left back to the nursing

* * * * * “I don’t believe it, Eliyahu!” Yocheved stood gaping at the built-in bookshelves that were packed with seforim. Then she spun around to her brother. “Where is that very dignified, traditional bookcase of yours?” “In the storage room downstairs,” her brother answered patiently. Elisheva was bustling from the kitchen to the dining room, serving dates and nuts, Pesach cookies, cake, and homemade lemonade. “Don’t bring in so much food,” Yocheved scolded her. “Sit down for a minute. What is this? You’ve already let Eliyahu put his seforim into the wall?” “It’s not a wall.” Eliyahu looked

“The shelves don’t sag.” “Oh, you think plaster is stronger than pressed wood?” she asked, hardly concealing her scornful tone. It wasn’t directed at Eliyahu, of course, but at the offending, modern new bookcase that she decidedly did not approve of. “Plaster is not stronger than wood, but metal is. And there are enough metal bars in those shelves.” “And the silver display,” she said. “Why is it on the side? Why didn’t you put your silver items in the middle, to make the whole thing more symmetrical?” Elisheva retreated to the kitchen. “I don’t think the silver has to be in the center,” Eliyahu answered, in the same patient, respectful tone that he used when speaking to his oldest sister. “I think the seforim belong in the center, and it’s more appropriate for the silver to be placed on the side.” “So why wasn’t it like that in your old bookcase?” “Because I didn’t have the choice. The silver display was built into the middle of our old bookcase, and that was it. We bought a floor sample from the store twenty years ago. Here, the person who installed this asked me exactly how I wanted to plan the layout of the shelves.” “Nu, very nice. And what other furniture did they give you?” She

home on the first day of Chol Hamoed. But he enjoyed being here very much, baruch Hashem.” “I’m sure.” Yocheved’s eyes, which were usually narrowed with suspicion or criticism, also knew how to smile. “Plenty of space, well-raised grandchildren, a devoted daughter and son-in-law… So, children, what do you say about the new house?” “It’s nice,” Chani and Esti said in unison. “And big,” Devoiry added. “But Mommy doesn’t let us ride our cars here,” Shloimy complained. Bentzy quickly soothed him. “But there’s lots of room in the lobby downstairs, so it’s okay.” “I miss my friends who live near the old house,” Meir said, “but it’s not so far. On Isru Chag I’ll go help my friend collect wood for the Lag Ba’omer fire. It’s only a fifteenminute walk.” “Oh, that’s not too bad. All the kids stayed in the same schools, right?” “Yes,” Elisheva and Eliyahu said together. “So what’s with your apartment? When are your tenants moving in?” “They’ll get the key a week after Pesach. I don’t know when they are actually planning to move in.” Elisheva passed Yocheved a platter with slices of cake. “But you’ll get paid from the minute they get the key, right?” Menachem inquired. “Yes. They’ll pay a few months’ rent up front.” Menachem nodded approvingly. “That’s good.” “Yes, it sounds very good,” his wife added. “So, you’ll have some more ma’aser to give for Aunt Minna’s operation, right? Yankel told me that you gave him a nice amount, but you know how it is; there’s never enough money.” “We’ll see,” Eliyahu said. “What does that mean, ‘we’ll see’?” “It means that I have a few ideas about what to do with my ma’aser money, and I have to look into it.” “What’s there to look into? What other things were you thinking of doing with it?” “Buying a sefer Torah for a shul,” he replied. “A sefer Torah!” Yocheved stared at him as though he’d swallowed five whole dates with the pits. “How much are you renting that apartment out for, Eliyahu, that you can deduct ma’aser of one hundred and thirty thousand shekels?!” At the doorway of the porch, Binyamin was chatting with his cousin Yehudah, Aunt Yocheved’s youngest child. They both turned around when they heard her voice rise. “What costs one hundred and thirty thousand shekels, Mommy?” Yehudah asked. “A sefer Torah.” “A sefer Torah? Our yeshivah got a new sefer Torah before Purim that cost more than a hundred and forty thousand.” “Nu.” Yocheved looked triumphantly at Eliyahu. “After all, Eliyahu, you didn’t become a millionaire. Although…” She looked around. “Maybe this apartment might delude you into thinking otherwise.”

Counter Intelligence Chief: Foreign Actors Attempting to Influence the 2020 Presidential Election THE PULSE: National Counterintelligence and Security Center Director William Evanina warned that Russia was attempting to denigrate Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden ahead of the 2020 election. He said that Russia was using a range of measures in its attempt to achieve its goals, including spreading false information about corruption. As an example, he stated that “pro-Russia Ukrainian parliamentarian Andriy Derkach is spreading claims about corruption, including publicizing leaked phone calls

44 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / August 12, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

— to undermine former Vice President Biden’s candidacy and the Democratic Party.” Evanina also noted that according to current intelligence assessments, China would prefer that Trump lose the election and has therefore been harshly critical of the administration’s actions on “Hong Kong, the legal status of the South China Sea, and China’s efforts to dominate the 5G market.” Last, Evanina said that Iran “seeks to undermine U.S. democratic institutions, President Trump, and to divide the country in advance of the 2020 elections.” He said that Tehran’s motivation is “in part, driven by a perception that President Trump’s reelection would result in a continuation of U.S. pressure on Iran in an effort to foment regime change.” THE IMPACT: The consensus of the U.S. intelligence

community is that Russia interfered in the 2016 election.

The Republican-controlled Senate Intelligence Committee chaired by Richard Burr (R-NC) found that Russian agents “sought to influence the 2016 U.S. presidential election by harming Hillary Clinton’s chances of success and supporting Donald Trump at the direction of the Kremlin.” The Russian government’s current actions indicate that they have not changed course and that they intend to interfere again. Many American media companies have enacted safeguards since 2016 designed to stymie Russian propaganda. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a statement warning Ukrainian citizens to stay out of other countries’ sovereign elections. He said that he wanted to “assure our partners that Ukraine did not allow and will not allow itself to intervene in the future in the elections and thereby harm our trustworthy and sincere partnerships with the United States.”

Biden Criticized for Recent Comments THE PULSE: Joe Biden courted controversy with com-

ments that he made in two recent interviews. Many criticized his remarks as being insensitive and demeaning to black Americans. During an interview with black CBS correspondent Errol Barnett at the virtual convention of the National Association of Black Journalists and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, Biden was asked about his mental fitness and if he has ever taken a cognitive test. Biden responded angrily by saying, “No, I haven’t taken a test. Why would I take a test? Come on, man. That’s like saying you, before you got on this program, you take a test where you’re taking [drugs] or not. What do you think, huh? Are you a [drug addict]?” It should be noted that in July a reporter asked Biden about his cognitive ability, and he responded that “I’ve been tested and I’m constantly tested,” and that “I can hardly wait to compare my cognitive capability to the cognitive capability of the man I’m running against.” In a later interview with NPR’s Lulu Garcia-Navarro, Biden was asked if he would engage with Cuba if he is elected president. Biden responded that he would and then said, “By the way, what you all know but most people don’t know, unlike the African American community with notable exceptions, the Latino community is an incredibly diverse community with incredibly different attitudes about different things. You go to Florida, you find a very different attitude about immigration in certain places than you do

when you’re in Arizona. So it’s a very different, a very diverse community.” THE IMPACT: Biden sought to clear up and explain his comments, but some Democrats fear that his lack of discipline will cost him support from the African American community, especially among younger black voters. It is not the first time Biden has made comments that are offputting to the black community. In May, he told the host of the Breakfast Club radio program that “If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.” Biden needs a strong turnout and support from the black community in the upcoming election.

Biden Will Not Travel to Wisconsin to Accept the Democratic Nomination THE PULSE: Democratic party officials announced that due to COVID-19 concerns, Joe Biden would not travel to Milwaukee to accept the Democratic nomination later this month. Instead, Biden will deliver his acceptance speech from his home state of Delaware. President Trump also an-

nounced that he would most likely deliver his acceptance speech from the White House. THE IMPACT: The decisions of President Trump and Joe

Biden to avoid their respective nominating conventions has all but ensured that the media conventions that most Americans are accustomed to witnessing each election season would be unrecognizable this year. The normally pompous events with party leaders’ speeches to thousands of party-faithful attendees will be replaced by mostly virtual events.

MANY YEARS HAVE PASSED

since my summers in Bnos Yaakov Pupa Camp in the Catskills, but mention the name Mrs. Peri Rottenstein, and the days I spent sipping her trademark lemon teas seem like yesterday. In a role that combines camp mother duties with those of a camp nurse, Mrs. Rottenstein has been lovingly looking after the girls of Pupa camp for the last 25 years.

Admittedly, being a camp mother and nurse was not always on her horizon. Her initial brush with first aid began soon after her wedding, when her husband took an EMT (emergency medical technician) course. Since English was not her husband’s first language, Mrs. Rottenstein got involved in helping him study the material, but it wouldn’t be until a few years later that she would put it into practice. Meanwhile, neighbors began to stop by the house to receive first-aid care for minor injuries, such as cuts and sprains, and at times, when her husband wasn’t home, she would help by tending to the issues. So it happened that several years later, when Mrs. Rottenstein’s sister came across an ad in Der Yid newspaper that advertised that Pupa camp was looking for a nurse, she immediately called her sister and urged her to apply. As someone who loves working with girls and had been teaching ever since she graduated high school, Mrs. Rottenstein decided to give it a shot. “I didn’t believe that I would actually get the job,” Mrs. Rottenstein remembers. “I was not affiliated with Pupa in any way, and I didn’t know whether I was qualified. I did end up applying, though, and

was called in for an interview. The administration called me back a few days later and offered me the job.” While she was intrigued, there was still some skepticism about what the work actually entailed. She decided to reach out to the two women who had previously filled the position to hear what it was all about. “If I was looking for clarity, I only got more confused!” Mrs. Rottenstein laughs. “The first woman couldn’t stop extolling the virtues of the position, telling me how wonderful and easy the work was and how there was nothing to it. The second woman had a completely different take. She warned me that the job was very high-pressure, and described how the girls would knock at her door at all hours of the day.” Although she was confused, Mrs. Rottenstein took a chance and accepted the offer. “I’m happy to say that my experience turned out to be precisely how the first woman described it. I loved every single day, and until today, I love the job just as much as I did then.” Mrs. Rottenstein admits, however, that the work

is far from easy and that the job entails an enormous amount of responsibility. Most camps hire a nurse for medical purposes and another woman to serve as camp mother by taking care of the girls’ needs such as laundry, food and other technicalities. Mrs. Rottenstein serves as the nurse, while also taking care of some “motherly” duties. “It all began the first summer, when I realized that some technical needs were not being met,” Mrs. Rottenstein recalls. “Girls were having issues with their braces, glasses and shoes, and there wasn’t anyone in the camp whose job was to help them. So before returning to camp for a second summer, I went to the local orthodontist and told him that a lot of my campers, some of whom were his patients, had orthodontic wires becoming loose or breaking over the summer. He graciously gave me a box of wax strips and two orthodontic kits, both of which I have to this day. When a girl approaches me with an issue with her braces, I’m able to provide her with some relief until she can visit the orthodontist.” After the orthodontist, Mrs. Rottenstein made two more stops, one at an eyeglasses store and one at a shoemaker. Once she assured the owners that she wasn’t looking to compete with them but merely wanted to help her campers, they happily taught her how to repair a broken pair of glasses and what to do with a torn shoe. Now, if a camper breaks her glasses, tears her shoes, or even just needs a rubber band, she goes straight to Mrs. Rottenstein, who is more than happy to help. She even started selling earrings for a few dollars a pair as a service

to girls who lost theirs amid the flurry of camp activities.

MOST PEOPLE

would be bothered by the constant stream of girls coming to her door, but Mrs. Rottenstein isn’t fazed. “I know some nurses and camp mothers have set hours for non-emergencies,” she says, “but to me there is no such thing. In my welcoming speech on the first day of camp, I tell the girls, “Just like you can always reach your mother, you can always reach out to me. I am your substitute mother during your stay at camp.’” When she adds up the actual minutes that she works, it doesn’t seem like much. However, she is always available — and that’s what counts. She urges the girls to wake her in the middle of the night with any concerns. Does she mind when it turns out she was woken for something trivial? “I am so happy it’s nothing, that I don’t even mind that they woke me.” During her 25 years as camp mother, Mrs. Rottenstein says, she hasn’t stepped off the campgrounds when camp was in session, save for two times when she had family emergencies. “I never know at which moment a girl might need me, and I want to be there.” When asked if the demands of her job don’t drain her, Mrs. Rottenstein compares her role as camp mother to one of her hobbies: pruning trees. “Pruning, which in-

volves cutting away the dead branches of trees, is extremely taxing physically, and afterward my body is sore for days. But I love it so much that I don’t mind the pain. This job, as well, I love too much to feel drained from it.”

MRS. ROTTENSTEIN’S

constant concern to be there for the girls was what propelled her to begin serving her now-famous lemon teas. “I came up with this idea to create a tea room in my house. I developed an organized system, where I prepare individual cups with lemon juice, sugar and a teaspoon. When the girls stop by, all I need to add is a little hot water, and they can enjoy piping hot tea. The girls were so thrilled and grateful when they came by to get their teas that they nicknamed the path to my house ‘Lemon Tea Lane.’ I couldn’t believe how little it takes to make a kid happy, and it feels so wonderful to be able to provide that comfort.” As delicious as it is, lemon tea can’t solve everything, and sometimes girls do get hurt or sick. During her first year, her husband served as the official EMT, but then the camp administration requested that Mrs. Rottenstein herself get certified. She took the six-month course and became a certified EMT. What kind of medical scenarios does a camp nurse deal with? The most common ailments are strep throat and congestion, which are diagnosed by the doctor who visits weekly. Medications of any sort are kept in Mrs. Rottenstein’s bungalow, and she personally tracks down every girl and ensures that they have taken their dose. “Sometimes the girls want to keep their antibiotics in their room, because they don’t want to be bothered to come to me twice a day,” Mrs. Rottenstein says. “I never allow it, because once they feel better, they are prone to forgetting to finish their medication regimen.” Of course, with all the sports and action in camp, a number of physical injuries occur each summer. Usually it’s just a sprain or strain, but occasionally a girl can get a fracture, which is a more severe trauma to the bone. Mrs. Rottenstein is equipped to stabilize and wrap the wound, and can ensure that the camper rests the limb until a doctor can be seen. Fainting is also something a camp nurse deals with, and

although it can be very distressing for those watching, Mrs. Rottenstein notes that it usually isn’t cause for alarm. “After a fainting incident occurs, the girls are usually quite scared. I talk to them and explain what physically happens to the body, and that although the girl may not be responsive for a few minutes, it usually isn’t dangerous.”

WHILE THE OCCASIONAL

mishap is inevitable, Mrs. Rottenstein believes there are some things to which we should all pay more attention to ensure summer safety. “Sunscreen and hydration, I would say, are the two areas that are so often overlooked. I’m always reminding the girls to wear sunscreen and drink as much as they can. The consequences of sunburn and dehydration are sure to follow if they don’t.” Mrs. Rottenstein occasionally mentions to the girls to limit noodle soup and nosh, although she acknowledges that junk food was, and will probably continue to be, part and parcel of the camp experience. She notes that the camp also offers more nutritious foods now, such as an increase in fresh salads. If there was one change that she would love to implement to increase well-being, it would probably be to give the girls an extra hour of sleep by scheduling a later wake-up time. “Even though the camp does focus on campers going to sleep early, campers are often low on sleep. Lack of sleep takes a toll on both the immune system and the mood, so the girls can get sick faster and become more irritated, too. I think the same could be said for most adults...” “Some girls, away from their home environment, struggle more emotionally,” Mrs. Rottenstein observes. “And although I don’t get involved in their social altercations, I do see the girls who are homesick.” She says that the word “sick” is there for a reason, and that girls can present with different physical symptoms. “I deal with homesickness by trying to be encouraging and supportive,” Mrs. Rottenstein says. “I allow these campers to use my private phone to call home and ask their counselor to let them read in bed past lights-out if they can’t sleep.” Usually, homesickness lasts for short periods of time, and pretty soon the girls get swept up

in the exciting camp program. This brings to mind a particular incident. “Many years ago, a girl came over to me for help. I’d venture to say that she’s probably a grandmother by now. She was practically doubled over, crying and complaining of a terrible stomachache. I served her some tea, and when that didn’t seem to help, I gave her some over-the-counter medication. But still there was no change. I couldn’t figure out what was causing the pain. First I thought it may be food poisoning, but she had eaten the same camp food as everyone else. We kept trying different things: Motrin, a hot water bottle, fiber... But still, the pains persisted. It was a mystery, and I was stumped. Then the girl asked to be taken to the hospital, and I got really concerned! Finally, it dawned on me that perhaps these pains were rooted in something that wasn’t physical. “I nonchalantly struck up a conversation with her. I asked her how she was enjoying camp, and we talked for a while. It turned out that she’d gotten into a fight with her best friend that day, and she was very distraught about it. I immediately referred her to the staff member who addressed social issues, and that staff member was able to serve as the mediator and help her make peace with her friend. “Lo and behold, as soon as the issue with her friend was resolved, so were the mysterious stomach pains!”

THIS JOB IS ONE

of immense responsibility, and one would expect to feel relieved when that last girl gets onto the bus to go home. But Mrs. Rottenstein confesses, “While most of the staff members have worked really hard and are happy to complete the season, I dread that last week. In fact, my years seem to me like Oreo cookies, with the best part — the summer — sandwiched between every two winters. All year I look forward to getting the ‘cream.’” As Mrs. Rottenstein notes, when you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. And her parting words are simple: “Hashem should keep you all healthy and safe.”

For nearly five decades, the Korngold family has been mending wounds and spreading smiles in upstate New York. This week, The Boro Park View speaks with Dr. Jay Korngold to learn more about their story and the steps we can all take to help keep the doctor away. There are two types of children: The first group (consisting mostly of boys) considers stitches or staples to be a badge of honor, a rite of passage that indicates toughness and being one of the boys. Those in the other group, on the other hand, are overwhelmed by their ordeal: the trauma of heavy bleeding, the pain of the injury, and the doctor working on them as they sit or lie, utterly vulnerable. They would never even consider their injury as something to show off to friends and neighbors. The one thing children in both groups have in common is that there’s a good chance the doctor who treated them was

he term plastic surgery refers to a specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction or alteration of external body parts. Plastic here shares the same etymological origin as the everyday material we call plastic, and it essentially means to mold or reshape. This is what doctors in this field do: They reconstruct and remold body parts that have been damaged or altered by an injury. In recent years, after the senior Dr. Korngold retired from a long and illustrious career in the field, his son Jay took over his father’s position — along with the serious responsibilities that come along with it. In a community with thousands of children, ka”h, a dull moment is rare and the workload requires dedication, persistence and skill. In fact, one hour before I was scheduled to speak with Dr. Korngold on a Friday afternoon, I confirmed with his office that our call would go ahead as planned. By the time I called back, four patients had come in and needed emergency assistance. Our conversation had to wait. Dr. Korngold’s cheerful personality shines through when he discusses his work. “I’m a child at heart,” he

named Korngold. The father-son duo, Louis and Jay, have been the premier providers of plastic surgery procedures, minor and major, in upstate New York for nearly half a century. From stitches, staples and glue, to reconstructive surgeries involving severed fingers or nerve damage, a call to the Korngolds is generally the second one made after an injury; the first call is to Hatzolah, of course. The Korngold reputation goes beyond their medical skills, which are consistently lauded by experts and parents alike. In a field that treats emergencies — most of which involve young children — the menschlichkeit, character, bedside manner, and infectiously positive personalities of father and son have turned thousands of traumatic situations into stories with a happy ending.

says. “I get the greatest satisfaction when we’re able to help a child who came in crying and terrified — when we’re able to calm him down, treat him, and have him leave with a smile, feeling brave.” The doctor has been known to sing to children as he stitches them up, and his calm, friendly demeanor sometimes even lulls them to sleep as he hums and mends their injury. While parents might not show this range

People often use a knife to remove these slippery pits and end up with a significant gash on their hand. Avoid injury: Use a spoon or avocado pitter, or slice the avocado into quarters and remove the pit by hand. 2) SEPARATING FROZEN FOODS WITH A KNIFE This is often a recipe for disaster and might instead separate someone from their fingertip. Avoid injury: Defrost food completely before separating. 3) BLENDERS AND FOOD PROCESSORS Sharp blades spinning at incredible speeds don’t discriminate between veggies and mothers cooking for Shabbos or yom tov. Avoid injury: Always unplug the appliance, except during the moments of actual blending. 4) SLAMMING DOORS Doors are designed to close tightly, and generally leave no space for little fingers. Avoid injury: Children should not be allowed to play with doors. Car doors, in particular, should always be opened and closed by parents. 5) SWINGING BATS Foreheads don’t take kindly to a long piece of metal designed to hit a baseball to a few hundred feet. Avoid injury: Bats should be swung only in designated areas, with nobody allowed to stand within a few feet of the batter. 6) BIKE FALLS Children on bikes move at high speeds and can often lose control, injuring foreheads or chins. Avoid injury: Always wear a helmet, and drive safely at all times.

of emotions on the surface, those who have been through the Dr. Korngold “experience” are grateful for the doctor’s approachability and how he puts everyone at ease. It’s a testament to Dr. Korngold’s reputation in the community that parents from Monsey, Monroe, South Fallsburg and elsewhere continue to trust their most prized possessions in his healing hands.

“W

hat’s the difference between glue, stitches and staples?” This is a question the doctor hears often. As he explains it, these are some of the many methods a doctor needs in his toolbox, along with the good sense to understand when to use what. The goal is to facilitate healing, avoid infection and minimize scarring. While gluing an injury might seem easiest, using this method for a wound that has cut through to the bone and damaged muscles, nerves and tissue wouldn’t be prudent. Such an injury requires layered closure, which can be done only by a professional applying stitches. The entirety of the healing process can take many months, and obtaining the services of a specialist is the only responsible option.

For now, cover the wound and call for help. 4) DON’T USE A BANDAGE ON BROWS OR OTHER HAIRY AREAS. Removing a bandage can be very painful in such areas. In addition, brow hair doesn’t grow back well. Use a gauze and medical tape, if possible.

Dr. Korngold points out that despite incredible scientific advances, the oldfashioned needle and thread still work best to close things up nicely, whether it’s repairing a torn seam on a skirt or a deep cut on a hand. But as in the world of real estate, the doctor says that it’s all about location, location, location. An active area is different from a little-used body part; a horizontal cut on the face is easier to repair than a vertical one; and a scalp injury is more likely to be closed up with the strong and simple method of stapling. When repaired correctly, a terrifying gash can appear as little more than a scratch once fully healed. As the premier name in this field, Dr. Korngold often receives odd-hour texts on his personal cell phone from pediatricians, urgent-care doctors and members of Hatzolah. Emergency room or urgent care doctors might tend to more simple wounds, but when faced with a complex situation, they reach out to Dr. Korngold. They know he has the proper focus and decades of technical knowledge to delicately clean out a wound and close it up, with the precision required for long-term healing. Many times a photo is all the doctor needs to advise whether the injury requires emergency treatment at his office. In some cases, the doctor will even come in late at night or in the middle of yom tov to help a community member in need. Dr. Louis Korngold is known to have once flown to Eretz Yisroel to treat wounded Yidden during a particularly dangerous time. Decades later, the Korngold family is still on the front lines, healing patients stitch by stitch.

As in the world of real estate, Dr. Korngold says, repairing a wound is all about location, location, location.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SOMEONE SAD ON A BIKE?

It seems like the laws of physics don’t allow for individuals rolling on two narrow wheels at full speed to experience anything but excitement, adventure and exhilaration. We’ve grown so accustomed to riding our bikes that we forget the mechanical marvels of these little metal contraptions. A quick reminder comes when something unexpectedly goes wrong: a broken chain, a busted brake or a damaged derailleur. For children, the bike can suddenly turn into a source of sadness and tears. For parents, it means a call to a local bike repairman to see if they can pass their block, preferably ASAP. The world of bicycles is wide and varied. Most local children ride bikes that cost a couple hundred dollars at most, but there are bikes out there that sell for many thousands, or even tens of thousands, of dollars. These more expensive bicycles, generally used by avid adult bikers, are lighter, last longer, ride more smoothly and provide an upgraded riding experience. But even cheaper bicycles can provide many years of fun, if properly cared for and maintained. In conversations with leading bike experts and repairmen, we’ve learned a little bit about what you can do to save on repairs and avoid unnecessary — and often dangerous — damage to your bike.

The ABCs: Air, Brakes and Chain

Every few days, it is recommended to check these three items, which are the source of most common bike problems:

A

B

Air

Brakes

This includes brake pads (the part of the brake that presses against the wheel) and brake levers. The brake pads should align with the wheel rim when you hit the brake, and there should be at least ⅛-inch of pad thickness left. For the brake levers, squeeze and release a couple of times to make sure they snap back after being released. If a lever gets stuck, it might need some lubrication or adjustment. Also check if the brake lever gets too close to the handlebar when squeezing. If it does, it needs to be tightened so that the brakes can be fully engaged when necessary.

A tire that is underinflated is a flat tire waiting to happen, and this can lead to dangerous falls. While you’re at it, check if there is visible wear and tear on your tire or if the tread is all worn out. It might be time to have your tire replaced — before it gives out.

C

Chain

The chain should rotate smoothly and not have any rust or black goo. Turn the chain backward to see if it travels smoothly through the gears. Some say that the C also includes the crankset, which is the part of the bike with the pedals, the attached arms and the large chainrings. If any part is loose, it needs to be tightened. If you can’t do it on your own, ask a bike repairman for help.

When we asked the experts which preventable causes are behind most of the damage to children’s bikes, we got a number of answers. Let’s go through them one by one:

Leaving bikes out in the rain Moisture, humidity and outdoor conditions are among the leading causes of bike damage. The water causes corrosion and rust that can’t easily be removed after it enters the many little components that make up your bike. Even leaving bikes out for long in sunny conditions isn’t recommended, as the heat can melt some important plastic or rubber components.

Switching gears (or “speeds”) while going uphill

Purchasing a cheap bike Here’s a piece of handy advice: Whether you’re buying the first bike for a four-yearold or a mountain bike for a young adult, never buy from among the cheapest bikes in the store. Not only will you enjoy them less when you ride them, but you’ll end up with more necessary repairs. In the end, it might not even turn out to be cheap at all.

The gears on your bike can make pedaling easier when going uphill. However, you should shift gears before you reach the incline. Once you are already riding uphill, trying to shift gears will often stress and break your rear derailleur. The rear derailleur (pronounced dee-raylor by most) is the little piece hanging down near the rear chainrings that moves your chain from one ring to the next as you shift gears. It’s a complex mechanism with a weird spelling, but its job is seamlessly executed when on flat ground.

Riding over potholes Hitting a pothole while riding is among the leading causes of serious bike injuries, as the rider and the bicycle can be thrown off balance at high speeds. Even if one avoids injury, the damage to the bike itself can be severe: punctured tires, wheels rims bent out of shape, axles damaged and much more. Stay on flat surfaces and avoid flats, including falling flat on your face.

Loose bolts and screws Every bike has many parts that are held together by bolts and screws. When these become loose over time, the chances of something being damaged are increased. Loose bolts should be tightened and fastened — but make sure not to make them too tight, as the increased pressure could cause parts to crack.

Reinventing the Wheel When we think of a bicycle repairman, we might picture a guy with a greasy shirt, who isn’t afraid of getting dirty, in a dingy shop or old van with a bunch of tools. The truth is, however, that the job requires lots of mechanical skill and technical knowledge so the repairman can troubleshoot and fix countless potential problems with different kinds of bikes from various companies around the world. Perhaps the most famous pair of bicycle repairmen in history are none other than the two brothers who went on to invent the first airplane: Wilbur and Orville Wright. About a decade before they changed the world of aviation, the brothers opened the Wright Cycle Exchange, a store that rented and sold bikes, accessories and parts. The company later changed its name to Wright Cycle Company as they expanded into building their own bikes. Over the years, the bicycle industry became extremely competitive, and the brothers transitioned to working on gliders. The knowledge and experience they’d gained while working with bicycles was valuable in helping them control and balance unstable vehicles, including the primitive aircraft of their day. It was

76 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / August 12, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

in their bicycle workshop that they built their first gliders and conducted their historic aviation experiments. So while your thrill-seeking neighbor isn’t literally “flying down the street” with his bike, the worlds of aviation and bicycles actually have more in common than you may think.

THIS WEEK:

CAMP OHEL BARUCH KRASNA Old meets new in one of the Catskills’ premier boys camps

In working on recent installments of this column, we’ve had the opportunity to talk to the movers and shakers involved in notable acquisitions and establishments of new colonies. This week, however, we had no such luck. Those who were behind the founding of Machne Ohel Baruch Krasna have long since left this world, but fortunately, their children — who were literally children at the time — were able to assist us with some leads as we explored the fascinating history of the camp. Today, six decades after a group of Holocaust survivors opened one of the first chassidish camps in the world, the sounds of Klal Yisroel’s future still ring loudly throughout this tranquil summer space.

HISTORY The Rosemont Lodge and Country Club was one of most magnificent resorts in the region back in the middle of last century. Unlike other hotels and colonies that were eventually sold off to frum buyers, this place was decidedly not dilapidated or rundown when the Krasna community came calling back in 1960. As you can see in the old postcard published here (inset on the next spread), Rosemont Lodge and Country Club was among the most beautiful, high-end vacation spots around in that era. Krasna at the time was a fledgling community that had recently moved to Boro Park and was among the earliest chassidish mosdos in the neighborhood. The children and young bachurim were in

need of a summer camp, and the Krasna Rav, zt”l, enlisted the help of his most loyal askanim to purchase a suitable property in the Catskills. It quickly became clear that no location was more suitable than this spectacular resort. Those who remember the early days talk with great nostalgia about the facilities they were lucky enough to enjoy. In addition to the standalone bungalow units, which were rented by members of the community, the main building was a strikingly large facility housing the kitchen, dining room, student bunks, activity room and more. This five-story lodge was essentially where Krasna camp happened. There was another building nearby,

82 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / August 12, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

referred to as “The Annex,” which had room for guests, and the grounds also included the original hotel casino that was used as the camp’s beis midrash. What happened to those buildings, you ask? One winter day in the late ‘60s, the administration received word that the large hotel building was on fire. The blaze completely destroyed the structure, leaving only the wide concrete stairway behind. The fire went unexplained until a few years later when The Annex was found burning, and a local vagrant was seen leaning against a tree nearby watching the flames as a source of amusement. It quickly became apparent that this drunkard had been behind the arson that destroyed so much of the camp’s classical charm. But Krasna was always a kehillah of baalei chesed, and new facilities were built to provide for the campers and families. A new shul, kitchen and dining room amenities, bunkhouses, and classrooms were all built throughout the years, expanding the camp; the names of the donors read like a Who’s Who of prominent Krasna kehillah leaders. There is, of course, the renowned Fischman family whose patriarch R’ Moshe, a”h, was among the camp’s early sponsors and whose family has continued being a backbone for this home of Torah. Along with R’ Shimon Waldman, a”h, R’ Elizer Lieberman, a”h, was also from those original pioneers, and his family has been instrumental in helping build the place over the past half century. The second generation of Krasna continued in this manner, with R’ Shimon Sherhoffer being a notable benefactor, and more recently, Krasna student and parent R’ Volf Ber Hersko sponsored comfortable new bunkhouses that provide campers with the best of both worlds. In a camp this old, the deep-rooted nostalgia drips heavily from those who experienced those early years. A fascinating story that has been part of Krasna Camp lore is that R’ Yidel Korn, a”h (of Korn’s bakery fame), owned a colony up the road from the camp. When he heard about the plans for the purchase, he told the Krasna Rav, zt”l, to make sure that the water well is in good condition as they’d long been struggling with water over there. The Rebbe responded, “Zurg nisht, es veht zein vaas-

A postcard showing the magnificent Rosemont Lodge and Country Club

er — Don’t worry, there will be water.” Incredibly, the well still hasn’t dried up, and to this day, the camp relies on this well for its water supply!

WHERE CAMP STANDARDS ARE SET, MET AND SURPASSED There are many wonderful camps in our community, but few can compare to Krasna when it comes to boys from other yeshivos begging their parents to spend these two months in the environs of a camp from a different chassidus. Parents, campers, day campers and visitors speak with awe about this camp that manages to blend ruchnius with enjoyment in such a rarely seen, seamless manner. The camp stands apart from the pack in many ways. For starters, the learning and studying is at a level that makes even year-round schools envious. Last summer, the menahelim and rebbis created an entire program encouraging not talking during davening. The project was so successful that one of the counselors shared how a number of parents who

stopped by to visit during davening hours asked if they were witnessing some activity or perhaps they happened to come on “Davening Day.” The Shabbosos in camp have also been lauded as especially spiritual and meaningful, with children yearning all year for that true taste of Shabbos. The head counselors in camp, Reb Itzy Zieg and Reb Matis Biller, are among the most dedicated and talented members of their craft. We heard from parents who expressed amazement at how they can give the kids so much fun and enjoyment while keeping things eidel and ehrlich. One of the many ways in which they are able to navigate this is by structuring their activities — exciting and intense as they are — around Yiddish topics and themes. From the process of bringing bikkurim, to the four circumstances requiring a Todah offering and Birchas Hagomel, to the enacting of the Days of Moshiach, the entertaining parts of camp are also learning experiences full of positive messages. There are dozens of staff members who stay in bungalow units provided by the camp, and a number of them have expressed that the camp atmosphere is the biggest draw to their annual return. There are also a minimal number of bungalows available for rent, but they rarely see the open market as those who’ve tasted a summer in Krasna are not likely to give up their bungalow so easily. While being in a happening children’s camp is a major draw, the friendly, pressure-free chassidish vibe is greatly missed by those who’ve moved on to nicer or roomier bungalows elsewhere. The Shabbos singing is especially enjoyed by the families, and with the overnight camp being closed this summer, the experience has been notably missed. The administration deals with an influx of applications every spring with children from nearly 40 chadarim vying for a coveted spot in camp. Most summers see an average of around 300 campers and 750 day campers enjoying a summer experience unlike any other. Today, those seeds that were planted six decades ago continue to blossom, and the children of Krasna continue to benefit from that pioneering vision of a true Torah future.

Firsts in First Aid In 1888, Robert Wood Johnson, of Johnson & Johnson fame, was traveling out west on the railway, passing the time chatting with a gentleman. His fellow passenger, who turned out to be the chief surgeon of the Rio Grande Railway, was describing to Johnson horrific scenes of injured railroad workers lying in the middle of nowhere, helpless — with medical help too far away to be fetched to administer life-saving treatment.

Content list and description of one of the first commercial first-aid kits

Later that same year, Johnson & Johnson put together an Accident and Emergency Case, the first commercial first-aid kit that railroad workers could keep with them. The metal weatherproof container held sterile gauze, bandages, dressings, cottons and antiseptics to enable the treatment and stabilization of injured individuals until proper help was obtained.

Here, an ad depicts a gentleman in need of an Autokit.

By 1890, each railroad had Johnson manufacture custom first-aid kits with the supplies they requested — with their names emblazoned on the case, of course. What’s more, Johnson & Johnson offered a variety of eighteen different types of first-aid kits!

Custom first-aid kits for the Southern Pacific and Wabash railroads

By 1901, Johnson’s First Aid Manual, which provided physicians’ instructions on administering “first aid” for injuries until more comprehensive help arrived, was included in first-aid kits.

Aerokits debuted soon after airplanes did.

Two years before the Model-T hit the market, Johnson & Johnson was already selling Autokits containing emergency supplies designed for automobile use.

A manual was included in early first-aid kits.

When airplanes came into use, Johnson & Johnson marched to the beat, producing Aerokits. One first-aid kit sits in the Smithsonian Museum, displayed as part of the collection of items that joined Charles Lindbergh on his famous flight.

Charles Lindbergh’s first-aid kit

By: Shevy Hollander

First Aid in Combat Soldiers fighting in the Spanish-American War were outfitted with the first kits designed for combat.

Where Kits Are a Must The U.S. Department of Labor requires: All work sites must have first-aid kits. The type of kit required varies according to whether the site is indoors or outdoors, the employee count, risks for damage to the kit by environmental factors and rough handling, and — most importantly — occupational hazards. The NY Department of Transportation requires:

During World War II, these personal firstaid packets were worn by airborne troops, notably those invading France on D-Day. Each kit included a tourniquet, wound tablets, sterilized dressing and morphine tablets, as well as other solutions to be used for severe pain only.

“Every [school] bus shall be equipped with a first-aid kit properly identified and readily accessible. The case and cover of such [a] first-aid kit shall be substantially constructed of durable material. Due to the many different needs of student transportation, the appropriate contents of the first-aid kit shall be determined and supplied by the vehicle operator.” The NY Department of Education requires: The school district is responsible for providing first-aid supplies, placed in a location known to trained school health personnel. Each classroom should also be equipped with an emergency first-aid kit. Each school should also have a portable first-aid kit (aka emergency “go bag”), which should be taken on field trips, extracurricular activities and in the event of lockdowns or evacuations.

Here, paratroopers are getting ready to take off with first-aid kits attached to their hats.

The Jungle Kit, another World War II specialty item, was a first-aid kit the combatant would hook onto his rifle belt. Pouches like these were later used in Vietnam and Korea, and the design is still around today.

Innovative by Design Compact

The NY Department of Health recommends: The standard first-aid kit should include • A first-aid manual • Assortment of sterile adhesive bandages • Sterile gauze pads

Individually packaged

Tamper-evident

• Over-the-counter drugs (aspirin, anti-diarrheal medication, activated charcoal, syrup of ipecac) • Antiseptic ointment • Soap • Latex gloves

Clearly labeled

• Thermometer • Tongue depressors • Tweezers, needles

Color coded, if unitized.

Time to Take Out the First-Aid Kit? Not always! According to a study by Johnson & Johnson, conducted in honor of the 125th anniversary of their first first-aid kit, 76% of parents admitted their child has faked a boo-boo for the following: • To get a special treat • To get out of doing something they don’t want to do • To receive a kiss or personal affection from their parents • To get an adhesive Band-Aid!

Out-of-the-Box Boxes In 1964, these first-aid kits, specialized for snake injuries, hit the market.

96 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / August 12, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

This waterproof kit was designed for boats and included medications for seasickness and heat exhaustion, as well as a plastic tube meant to revive victims of drowning.

This compact version was perfect for the person hit with a case of wanderlust.
