(Re: Mother for a Season, Issue 47) I was made to feel like a camper once again when I read about our beloved camp mother Mama Rottenstein (as we campers lovingly called her). Her lemon tea recipe is one I still use! Here’s a public thank you for Mrs. Rottenstein’s devotion and dedication to each of her campers. She is the camp experience we all longingly remember! May Hashem grant her the koach and siyata d’Shmaya to continue her sacred work. A Summer (Step-) Daughter

STOPPED IN TIME (Re: A Stitch in Time, Issue 47) As a patient of Dr. Korngold, who’s treated both my son and myself, I especially enjoyed the article profiling this truly exceptional and dedicated doctor. So dedicated, in fact, that Dr. Korngold saw my son eighteen years ago on an Erev Pesach when he slit his lip, and he ensured that my son was treated immediately. I only recently learned the trick of using a knife to smoothly remove avocado pits and have begun using it. I’m sure glad that Dr. Korngold stopped me in time before any injuries occurred. RE: A PERFECT MEAL (Inbox, Issue 46) I’m another fan of cooking in the pizza maker. I love it especially in the summer when I don’t want to heat up the kitchen by using the oven. I bake and saute a variety of things in it, and the results are always delicious. I wanted to share two tips: First, for those cooks who have the type of pizza maker whose temperature can’t be adjusted, you can lower the heat by lining the bottom plate with a sheet or two of The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. A MATTER OF SAFETY Dear Readers, Please take this letter seriously. It is a matter of safety. Don’t ever get into a cab without confirming that it’s the cab Sun. - 12 - 7 ordered. BY APP Mon.you Tue. - 12 - 7 was at the ODA Park facility this past Sunday, and the Wed. - 7 -I9 PM Thur. - 12 - 7 receptionist graciously booked me a cab home and informed me that a white car would be waiting at the corner. I arrived at the corner with my little child to see a white car. I asked the driver if he was Yoni from Uber who was booked by ODA to take me home, and he said yes and ordered me into the car. I got suspicious when he asked me for my address, and when his manner turned aggressive, I had the good sense to ask him to drop me off at the corner of my block. When we finally arrived at the corner, he demanded payment, even though Uber works automatically by credit card. Then he got out of his driver’s seat, slammed the door on my foot, and refused to let me go before I paid up. In a panic, I gave him the money, but he still didn’t let me leave. Luckily, a passing woman walked over to the car to see what was going on, and the driver got scared and let me out. However, he still hung around and waited at the corner to see which apartment I would enter. I called the police, but they said they couldn’t do anything about it. I went to Brooklyn Car Service to report the incident, and they suspended the driver from TLC and told me to file a claim. They explained to me that what the driver did was illegal. He falsified that he was my driver and then demanded payment. Additionally, he was not on call at the time and wasn’t supposed to take any rides then. Of course, his physical aggression was also not appropriate. At this point, a claim has been filed with 311 to revoke his license as a cab driver. I also called Shomrim and have given over the details of the story. This was a traumatizing experience, one which I don’t wish on anyone. (And how I appreciated the gesture when ODA later called to follow up and make sure that my child and I were safe!) Stay careful, and ride safely! A BP Passenger

The mishnah says, “Kach hi darkah shel Torah, pas bamelach tochel u’mayim bimesurah tishteh v’al ha’aretz tishan v’chayei tzaar tichyeh, u’vaTorah atah amel. Im atah oseh kein ashrecha v’tov lach, ashrecha ba’olam hazeh v’tov lach la’olam haba — The following is the way of the Torah: to eat only bread with salt, to drink small sips of water, to sleep on the ground and live a life of tzaar. If he learns Torah despite these limited circumstances, praised is he… in this world and in the next.” This mishnah invites the following question: If a person has parnassah, does it mean that he isn’t following the ways of the Torah? Does he only fulfill the ways of the Torah if he is poverty-stricken and has a life filled with troubles? Furthermore, why does it say, “Im atah oseh kein… — If he does as such, praised is he…” After all, a person does not make his life troubled or poor; these are factors Hashem determines. Many meforshim agree that the mishnah means something else entirely: The mishnah isn’t saying that you are living a life of Torah if you follow this path of poverty; rather, v’chayei tzaar tichyeh — if you live the life that Hashem has mapped out for you, even if it is a difficult one, with chayei, which means with chiyus and acceptance, then ashrecha. And that is something that “atah oseh kein” — it is in our power to do so.

24 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

A person has to be able to rise above the situation he is in. Legend has it that before the war, there were two families in America who were moser nefesh for Shabbos, often losing their jobs on Friday to avoid desecrating Shabbos. One of them had children who grew up to be talmidei chachamim while the other’s children drifted away from the ways of the Torah. The difference was said to be that the father of the first family would come home on Friday, rub his hands with glee, and dance with his children around the table, singing, “Baruch Hashem, I lost my job for Shabbos!” He clearly accepted his situation with chiyus. The other looked as though he was in deep despair and broken over his sacrifice, a feeling that rubbed off on his children and wired them to think that there was a better way. This shows what a difference one’s chiyus makes when sacrificing for Hashem. A paradigm of a gadol who lived by the words “v’chayei tzaar tichyeh” was the holy Shaagas Aryeh. He decided to set out on a self-imposed galus to acquire a higher level of closeness to Hashem. He had major chumros; he ate only yashan and was makpid to eat only from his own keilim, so he took along his own pot and a sack of porridge oats wherever he went. Whenever he arrived at a town, he’d ask his baal achsanyeh to cook up his food in his own pot. At one point he arrived in Hamburg, home to the esteemed Rav Refoel Hamburger. Oblivious to whose home he’d arrived, the Shaagas Aryeh knocked on the door and asked Rav Refoel’s rebbetzin if he could stay over and if she could cook his food using his own pot. The rebbetzin was taken aback by the boldness of the request; after all, her husband was a famed posek. Did this stranger not trust the rebbetzin’s cooking? Later, when the Shaagas Aryeh went to shul, she asked her husband if she was supposed to give in to the beggar’s demands. Rav Hamburger told her that he’ll check upon the guest’s return if he was indeed a talmid chacham and sincere about his demands. If he’d find

that their guest wasn’t truly a talmid chacham, then the man could choose to either eat the rebbetzin’s food or to leave. When Rav Refoel sat down to learn with his revered guest, a lion in Torah, he was quickly humbled by the brilliance emerging from his lips and he recognized who he was. He asked the Shaagas Aryeh to stay on and remain his chavrusa, renting him a room nearby where the landlady would cook

Here’s a timely story that demonstrates how maintaining this chiyus even in suffering can bring about a yeshuah. The Pe’as HaShulchan, a talmid of the Vilna Gaon, was on a boat emigrating to Eretz Yisroel with other fellow talmidim of the Gra, when midjourney, a great storm broke out. Since it was the first day of Selichos, the Pe’as HaShulchan announced that all the talmidim on board should confess their aveiros, and hopefully, they would poel their yeshuah that way. When it was his turn, the youngest talmid there, a yungerman, spoke up meekly. “When I was little,” he shared, “my father moved to Vilna. When he saw the gadlus of the Vilna Gaon, he decided that he also wanted to learn, and he stopped working. A major poverty enveloped our household at that point, so my father considered going back to work, if only to feed the family. So I told a lie. For two entire years, I pretended that I was receiving food in yeshivah so that my parents should have one less mouth to feed, which enabled my father to continue learning with a lesser burden. And every night, after everyone went to bed, I’d go around and eat the crumbs off the floor. And I’d like to do teshuvah for the lies I said over those two years.” When he heard this, the Pe’as HaShulchan cried out with tears in his eyes: “V’chayei tzaar tichyeh — he wanted his father to go learn, so he chose to be m’tzaar himself! On the first day of Selichos we say, ‘Pnei na litelo’os v’al l’chatuos — Look at our pain, not at our sins.’ But Ribbono Shel Olam, today I beseech You, do look at our sins! Look at the aveiros of this yungerman and send us a deserving yeshuah.” As the summer zman draws to a close, we look back at the past few months, which were filled with such epic tzaar and loss. But despite the tzaar, Yiddishe families everywhere weathered the storm and continued learning and davening with chiyus from home! Now we ask Hashem to bentch all of Klal Yisroel with the blessings of ashrecha v’tov lach and a kesivah v’chasimah tovah.

“Ribbono Shel Olam, today I beseech You, do look at our sins! Look at the aveiros of this yungerman and send us a deserving yeshuah.” his food using his keilim. Thus, the two great Torah minds sat every day and dissected the Gemara together. One day, the Shaagas Aryeh announced to Rav Hamburger, “In the next few days, people will find out who I am, and I’m going to get a position as a rav. My galus has come to an end.” “How do you know?”’ asked Rav Hamburger. “Today,” the Shaagas Aryeh replied, “the landlady brought me the food she had cooked for me. I was so engrossed in learning that I didn’t notice her coming, and I moved my elbow, hitting the pot and sending its contents everywhere. The landlady yelled at me, extremely upset about the baal tashchis I’d caused, and I was so shaken by her tirade that for the next few minutes, I was disturbed from learning. Then I realized that my selfimposed galus was only worthwhile so long as I could juggle it with Torah. I know that the moment it causes bittul Torah and takes away my chiyus for learning, it cannot continue. And that’s how I know that Hashem will put an end to it.” Indeed, a few days later, a group of roshei kehillah from Metz came searching for him and invited him to become rav in their town, which he did.

Maimonides Institutes Updated Visitation Policies With New York City continuing to see COVID-19 cases tracking downward, Maimonides Hospital has extended its visiting hours, a positive development benefiting both patients and their families. As of August 7, visiting is permitted between 12 noon and

8 p.m. on weekdays and from 2 to 10 p.m. on Shabbos, with a maximum of four hours of visitation per patient during those hours. Patients will be allowed one visitor at a time, with a maximum of two visitors per day, both of whom must wear appropriate personal protective equipment, which will be provided by the hospital. Visitors will also undergo symptom and temperature checks upon entry to the facility. Some areas of the hospital are subject to slightly different rules, with emergency room visitation available throughout the day and night, albeit with a four-hour maximum. NICU and maternity visitation hours run from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., with slightly different policies in place for pediatric and end-of-life patients. For more information on visitation policies, contact Maimonides at 718-283-1200.

Concerns Mount as Early Census Deadline Looms A decision by the Census Bureau to end its count a full month ahead of schedule has sparked concern that New York’s

28 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / August 19, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

population will be undercounted, resulting in tremendous losses in crucial federal funding. Conducted once every ten years, the census collects data about every resident of the United States and is used to determine the number of representatives per state in the House of Representatives and to allocate billions in federal funding to local communities. The census count officially began on January 21 in the remote Western Alaskan village of Toksook Bay and was scheduled to conclude by July 31, but that deadline was later extended through October 31 because of the coronavirus outbreak. In a surprise decision, the Trump administration announced earlier this month that the census would conclude on September 30, just two days before Sukkos, leaving those promoting census participation scrambling. New York’s Jewish communities have often been undercounted in the census, and while New York City made an effort to reach Yiddishspeaking residents through a $3 million advertising blitz, much of it was used on platforms that typically would not be seen by its intended audience. Conflicts between elected officials and the Jewish community during the pandemic have also eroded the Jewish community’s trust in the government, making people further reluctant to complete the census, reported VIN News. But not filling out the census can be extremely costly, explained Rabbi Avi Greenstein, executive director of the Jewish Community Council of Boro Park, who noted that in the 2010 count, only 49.2% of Boro Parkers filled out their census forms, compared with a 61.9% completion rate in the rest of New York City. According to a George Washington University researcher, states lost $1,091 in federal funding for every person who did not fill out the census in 2015 for certain federally funded programs that rely on census data. “It’s something that’s very concerning to us as a community,” said Rabbi Greenstein. “When we have something that’s so simple to do and there’s so much on the line for it, it’s quite frustrating when the numbers are low.” The JCC of Boro Park has run multiple drives to encourage people to complete the census, and it recently launched a $2,500 cash raffle in conjunction with Agudath Israel of America to boost participation, with $500 Keter gift cards awarded to two second-place winners, and $100 Toys4U gift cards given to fourteen third-place winners. With many people away for the summer, local organizations had been hoping to enlist schools and shuls to emphasize the importance of filling out the short census forms during September and October, an effort that will be further compromised by the latest deadline shift.

“Now that a month has been taken away, we have to go back to the drawing board and figure out what to do with this new reality,” said Rabbi Greenstein.

Matzeivos Unearthed During Lizensk Construction Project A construction project at a Lizensk market gave way to a disturbing discovery, with dozens of matzeivos that had been repurposed as construction material found buried under the roadway. Lizensk Mayor Ireneusz Stefanski posted over 100 pictures of the matzeivos that were unearthed underneath a nearly 33-yardlong stretch of roadway in the southeast market area over the last few weeks. The Notes From Poland website reported that the tombstones were unusually well-preserved after being buried for decades under a layer of brick, sand and asphalt, many still bearing vibrant colors and well-defined ornamentation. Archeologists were called in to supervise the preservation of the over 150 matzeivos. Nearly 100 of the tombstones were largely intact, their rounded tops trimmed down to better fit in the roadway. The street was built in 1940 and 1941 using the remains of the local shul and two buildings that had been bombed for the project, taking matzeivos from the local cemetery when they needed additional paving materials. According to Stefanski, a similar discovery was made nineteen years ago when road work took place at a nearby roundabout. Archeologist Ewa Kedzierska said an elderly man approached the team that was removing the matzeivos, telling them that he remembered the tombstones being carted into the market area when the roadway was being paved. Kedzierska noted that both Poles and Germans were involved in constructing the roadway during the war. The matzeivos are being held by the authorities in Lizensk, who will be consulting with local rabbis to decide what to do with the unexpected historical find. “It is best if they return to the Jewish cemetery they come from,” observed Filip Szczepanski from the Rabbinical Commission for Cemeteries, which operates under the authority of the chief rabbi of Poland, Rabbi Michael Schudrich.

The armchair was reserved for Daddy on the weekends and Zeidy on the Holidays, the very definition of royalty. The smells of shabbos food and the singing of old melodies will give my armchair a meaning of its own. Yet, the mohair and leather will set the tone for the next generation of memories and milestones. Every chair is a 4 legged vision that hosts more than just a crowd, but a future.

Recap: Joe Ludmir spends Pesach with his relatives in Perth, Australia, but his thoughts about the past and future keep him from enjoying himself. His one bit of solace is thinking of the family in Bnei Brak enjoying his “yom tov grant.” Yocheved, Eliyahu’s older sister, is aghast at how beautiful her brother’s new home is. “A sefer Torah that costs one hundred and forty thousand? That sounds like top of the line,” Menachem said to his son Yehuda. “Of course,” Yehuda agreed. “That’s the standard of those in charge of us… But you can for sure get a good, mehudar sefer Torah for less money than that.” “How much less?” his mother, Yocheved, wanted to know. “Maybe a hundred thousand, a hundred and ten,” her husband replied. “One minute, Eliyahu. Don’t tell me you are now going to spend one hundred thousand shekels!” Yocheved’s expression was reproachful. “How many months of renting your apartment will you need in order to have such a sum of ma’aser money?” “Could be some sifrei Torah are even less than that,” Yehuda tried to interject. “There are, for sure.” Eliyahu raised his eyes from the nutcracker and looked at those around him. “Could be,” his brother-in-law concurred. “Have you looked into it?” “Yes.” “Oh, so you’ve already done the fieldwork…” Menachem smiled. “How much do they want?” “About eighty. I’m not a hundred percent sure yet.” “What?” Menachem’s hand left his glass and rose to his forehead. “Eighty?” “Uh-huh.”

“Where are you going to find such a sofer?” “I found one already. The sefer Torah is written. It’s a very mehudar sefer Torah, top of the line. A Sefardic one.” There was a momentary silence in the room. “I have never heard of an Ashkenazi family donating a Sefardic sefer Torah to a shul, or the opposite.” Yocheved sounded peeved. “So you’re hearing about it now.” Her younger brother smiled. “And we are going to do it, b’ezras Hashem.” “Did you know about his idea, Elisheva?” Her sister-in-law turned to her. “And were you okay with it?” Elisheva smiled. “Looks to me like Eliyahu found a very original and practical solution. We want to donate a sefer Torah, and we want it to be mehudar. So why not do it like this? Because people will say that they’ve never heard of such a thing in their lives?” “What’s the difference between Ashkenazi and Sefardic sifrei Torah?” Binyamin asked. “Ashkenazi writing is considered much harder to do. Technically, the writing is more complicated and takes more time, and that’s why people pay more for it.” “So the sefer Torah is already written?” “Yes. Because of the time it takes, it’s rare that Ashkenazi sifrei Torah are written without preorders. But Sefardic sifrei Torah are written even without being ordered in advance, and I already went to see a few of them. I found them all to be

very beautiful.” “And do you know the sofrim who wrote them?” Yocheved asked. “Yes, the one who wrote the one I’m thinking about is in my kollel. You remember Gueta, Elisheva? The one who wrote Binyamin’s tefillin? So he writes tefillin for Ashkenazim as well as for Sefardim, but he only writes Sefardic sifrei Torah. He has a beautiful handwriting, and he’s a real yarei Shamayim…” He smiled. Something dreamy and unfamiliar was glistening at the corner of his eye. “Maybe we’ll be able to make a hachnasas sefer Torah before Shavuos.” “To which shul?” Yocheved asked. “I’ll find out about a Sefardic shul that needs a sefer Torah.” Eliyahu nodded to himself. “There are lots of new minyanim of bnei yeshivah that haven’t yet fully established themselves. I’m sure they’ll be happy to receive their own sefer Torah.”

back. Everyone was quiet, looking at him. Even the boys from the orphanage were staring in his direction. The boys liked their director very much, and even Gustav liked him, seeing what a good man he was. But all of the children knew each other very well by now; they

“So neither do I.” Gustav took a deep breath. “Is Moshe your real name?” “Yes. My Jewish name.” “How do you know that?” “Because I always knew that. At home they called me Mosh’ke, but my father called me Moshe.” “How do you know?” “Why are you called Gustav?” “Because that’s what the man at the orphanage decided to call me.” “I have always been called by my name, even in the ghetto.” Gustav was quiet. He wasn’t quite sure what the boy was talking about. “Where are you from?” Moshe asked him. “Bratislava.” “And I’m from Budapest. Hungary.” He sat with his legs folded for another moment, and then stretched them out in front of himself, rubbing his knees. “When we went to the ghetto, I was almost seven. They even made me a little birthday party in the ghetto. But I don’t remember the date. At the end of the war I was about eight, or maybe just seven and a half.” “And do you have a family name?” “Sure. Horenstein.” “Do you remember that, too, or did you make it up?” “I didn’t make it up,” the older boy answered, his eyes narrowing. “Why do you think I made it up?” “Because why don’t I remember anything?” Moshe Horenstein frowned. “When did you arrive at that orphanage?” “When I was little. Maybe three. No one really knows.” “Nu, so how do you expect to remember?” The eleven-year-old fell silent. “I don’t know the details of what exactly happened during the war, but I think that the Nazis, yemach shemam, occupied Bratislava quite a few years before they occupied Hungary. So I was able to grow up a little bit, and know my name,

5708/1948 The coughs tore at Gustav’s throat, and they annoyed the other passengers in the crowded sleeping hold of the ship. “Take the boy out!” one woman grumbled, hugging a baby close to herself. A five-year-old boy trailed behind her. “He can infect all of us!” “He has nothing contagious,” Rabbi Walkin explained patiently, yet again. “He was sick, but now he’s completely recovered. The doctors made this very clear before they released him from the hospital.” “You can’t believe them.” The woman was angry. “I don’t want him near us!” “Come, Gustav.” Rabbi Walkin grasped the boy’s hand. “I’ll arrange the best place for you: at the entrance near the stairs. If you feel like you need some clear air at night, you can go out quickly without having to find your way through this big room. Does that sound good to you?” Gustav nodded and glanced

had been together for so long, more than a year already. Only he was new. Only he didn’t belong. But soon he would be in Eretz Yisroel, and he would be together with Edo again. He had been with Edo for so many years that they definitely could be considered brothers, if not more. He would go and tell him what he had done: that he had run away from Janek and Ulush’s house in order to retrieve the paper, so that he could remember what Edo’s real name was. All of the children here had names, and they told all kinds of stories about themselves from the past. Maybe they were making things up; Gustav didn’t know. What he did know was that he had no stories to tell about himself, because he didn’t remember anything from his past. And there was no one to remember for him. “Rabbi Walkin.” A short, slight boy suddenly appeared at the director’s side. “I also want to sleep near the door. Can I share a mattress with him?” “Sure, Moshe.” Rabbi Walkin smiled at the boy. “Here, sit down here together.” Both boys sat down quietly. “How old are you?” Gustav asked. “About eleven.” “About?” “Do you know exactly how old you are?” “No.”

before they took my mother and father away.” “And I didn’t get to,” Gustav concluded tonelessly. Moshe Horenstein lay down on the mattress, trying to keep to just one half of it, so he could leave space for Gustav. But Gustav did not want to lie down. He sat at the far end of the mattress and stared at the steps, which were very close to his legs. Then he suddenly stood up and went upstairs. “Hey, where are you going?” someone hissed, grabbing his shoulder. It was not Rabbi Walkin. “Leave me alone!” the boy replied. “Let me go!” “Where are you going?” the adult growled again into his ear. “To the deck.” “To the deck? It’s nighttime now. And we warned everyone over and over that there must be silence outside. Remember? The closer we get to the coast of Eretz Yisroel, the more dangerous it becomes, because there’s a greater chance that the British will discover us. Go back downstairs.”

“I don’t want to!” Gustav said. He shrugged off the man’s grip. The man’s long arm reached for Gustav a second time. “Young man, you don’t want me to lock you up in a room for you to understand what I’m saying, do you? No. Going. Upstairs. Period.” Gustav went back down to the sleeping hall, defeated. Without saying another word, he curled up on the edge of his mattress. It was too quiet. Some of the adults sat and spoke in hushed voices, discussing the chances of getting to shore without being caught. He stifled a cough and turned over to the other side. Fine, so this boy, Mosh’ke, came from Hungary, and that’s why he knew things about himself. But there were other boys in Rabbi Walkin’s orphanage from Czechoslovakia, and even from Poland, and they had been very little when the Nazis took their parents away. How come almost all of them knew something about themselves? He rubbed his eyes. Bondy, the tall one, had been hidden with neighbors, and they’d told him everything. Meir

and Pinya had been hiding out in a convent, similar to where he had been, but their parents had brought with them the documents that contained all of their personal details. Like Edo, sort of. Yanku and Srul’che and Chaim’ke were hidden by The Underground, by all kinds of gentiles, and The Underground kept records of all their details, even their exact birthdays. He turned to the other side and heard Moshe moving, as well. It was too bad that before they’d left, his father and mother had not thought to give him a paper with the names of his uncles, or his own name, and where he had lived before the war, and the names of those who might know him. Then Theodore would have found him with the paper, and he would have known everything about him. Gustav would have also known everything about himself. Now he was just plain Gustav: poor, little Gustav, with no one in the world, without even a family name, who didn’t know anything about himself. To be continued...

Kamala Harris Chosen as Biden’s VP Running Mate THE PULSE: Joe Biden announced the choice of California Senator Kamala Harris as his running mate. The selection of Harris is historic, as she is the first black woman to be featured on a presidential ticket. Harris is of Indian and Jamaican descent. She has previously served as District Attorney of San Francisco and Attorney General of California. Harris has a unique appeal during this time of racial tension. Her ethnic background is a plus for those who seek a greater voice for the concerns of African Americans. Her experience in law enforcement will help assuage those who fear a soft-on-crime response to the violent protests transpiring in some cities in America. Harris has championed many

40 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / August 19, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

liberal causes, but she is considered to be more of a centrist than other VP candidates who were in the running, such as Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. Her selection is a testament to Joe Biden’s attempt to appeal to centrist American voters. Harris’s husband, Douglas Emhoff, is Jewish. The right-leaning Jerusalem Post editorial board called the BidenHarris ticket “probably as good [of a Democratic ticket] as Jerusalem could have hoped for.” It pointed out that “Harris stood up to pressure during her short-lived presidential run to take a more critical position toward Israel. She came out against aid cuts to Israel and refused to join those candidates slinging insults at Israel’s government and leaders.” THE IMPACT: Historically, the choice of a vice presidential candidate has had a minimal impact on election results. However, the choice of Harris will likely have a more pro-

found effect on the race. Joe Biden is 77 years old, and should he win the November election, he would be the oldest person to assume the presidency. Furthermore, Biden has not committed to seeking a second term. Should he win the election and decline to seek another term, Kamala Harris would be in the strongest position to carry the Democratic Party banner in 2024. This choice will therefore have a profound impact on the Democratic Party’s future. It may serve to prevent the more radical Bernie Sanders and AOC-backed elements of the party from wresting control from the party establishment.

Democratic National Convention Kicks Off THE PULSE: This week’s DNC convention will feature a range of speakers spanning the political spectrum. Keynote addresses will be delivered by former presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama as well as former first ladies Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama. Biden’s main primary challenger, Senator Bernie Sanders, and Governor John Kasich, a Republican from Ohio who ran for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination, will also address the convention in prime time. The convention will highlight prominent up-and-coming Democratic voices. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) will be given a 60-second slot as a leading representative of the progressive wing of the party. Young moderates such as Rep. Conor Lamb of Pennsylvania and Nikki Fried of Florida will be speaking as well.

states, including Georgia, Oregon and Colorado. THE IMPACT: The victories of extremist elements por-

tends a significant problem for the proper functioning of American democracy. Furthermore, Democratic members of the Squad have been openly hostile to Israel. Many of them have backed the BDS movement and advocated for restrictions on aid to Israel. In a series of recent interviews for this column, Reps. Tom Reed (R-NY), Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Max Rose (D-NY) all expressed their belief that political extremism is the real threat to proper governance.

President Trump Achieves Historic Middle East Breakthrough THE PULSE: President Donald Trump helped negotiate a historic peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. In exchange for the normalization of ties between the two countries, Israel agreed to hold off on its planned annexation of the areas of Judea and Samaria. Many are hopeful that this agreement will pave the way to future negotiations between Israel and other Arabic countries such as Bahrain, Oman and perhaps Morocco. The deal will also help boost two of the strongest economies in the Middle East and allow for direct flights between Tel Aviv and Dubai.

THE IMPACT: Biden is attempting to portray his candidacy as a voice for a unified America. He is trying to highlight his appeal to left-wing voices by featuring Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and AOC while also highlighting moderate voices such as Alabama Senator Doug Jones, Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth, and Republican Gov. John Kasich. It remains to be seen if this juggling act can be pulled off successfully. Today’s Democratic Party has many competing centers of power, each vying for the party’s future control. Many progressives have openly complained about the minimal time slot allotted for AOC and believe that the Biden campaign is taking them for granted.

THE IMPACT: The agreement is a significant boost for President Trump and his Mideast team that includes Jared Kushner and Avi Berkowitz. Trump has billed himself as “the master of the art of the deal,” and pulling off such an agreement will serve to bolster his claims. The deal is a plus for Trump, as it takes annexation, which would likely inject instability into a volatile world stage, off the table for now. It provides PM Netanyahu with a respectable down ramp from his pledge to his supporters to annex areas of the West Bank. It is a win for the Netanyahu-Kushner strategy of building relationships with Arabic countries irrespective of progress on the Palestinian front. The agreement is a blow to Iran and the Palestinians and was heavily condemned by both.

Disappointing Primary Results for Centrist Candidates

Trump Promises New Iran Nuclear Deal if Reelected

THE PULSE: Ilhan Omar easily won the primary elec-

THE PULSE: President Trump promised to finalize a new nuclear deal with Iran within four weeks of his reelection. The State Department later clarified that it is not aware of any ongoing talks or initiatives toward the creation of a new nuclear deal. When Trump initially withdrew from the Iran Nuclear Deal, he predicted that Iran would come back to the table requesting a new one. So far this has not materialized. The president is apparently under the impression that Iran’s failure to return to the table is based upon the fact that they are anticipating a Biden victory and a restoration

tion in her Minnesota district. She is the third member of the Squad to fend off well-funded primary challengers to win primary elections. Both Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Rashida Tlaib easily won their party’s nominations. Additionally, several Squad-backed progressive candidates defeated mainstream establishment candidates in urban areas of New York and Missouri. On the Republican side, insurgent candidates, some of whom are open supporters of QAnon conspiracy theories, were victorious in many

of the original deal. Therefore, he believes that should he secure victory, Iran will begrudgingly come to the table to obtain a new agreement on his terms. THE IMPACT: Recently, The Wall Street Journal highlighted that despite numerous attempts to sabotage the Iranian nuclear program, Iran has succeeded in tripling its production of enriched uranium. According to Olli Heinonen, a former senior official at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran’s nuclear breakout time, which stood at one year when American withdrew from the deal, has now been reduced to four months. Furthermore, in a rebuke to American unilateralism on the Iran issue, the UN Security Council voted down an American proposal to extend the UN arms embargo on Iran. Despite extensive attempts to win over support, only the Dominican Republic voted in favor of the American resolution. In response to this diplomatic defeat, Secretary of State Pompeo has threatened to trigger “snapback” sanctions on Iran. With the promise of a new post-election deal with Iran, the president is pledging to resolve the Iran crisis under terms more amicable to himself and his allies.

ing in the era of the coronavirus. Democrats see Trump’s comments and his opposition to funding the postal service as a cynical attempt to circumvent the state’s handling of elections. Due to the ensuing outcry, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi announced that she is considering calling the House back into session to address the issue and that she is prepared to call the postmaster general to testify. President Trump later clarified that while he is opposed to the additional USPS funding, the inclusion of the funding in a future stimulus bill is not necessarily a deal-breaker for him.

Durham Probe Secures First Guilty Plea THE PULSE: Kevin Clinesmith, a former FBI lawyer, plans

to plead guilty to altering an email in an attempt to get FISA court to reauthorize approval for surveillance of Trump campaign aide Carter Page. This is the first criminal case brought by Durham, whose investigation is tasked with looking into FBI misdoing in regard to surveillance of the Trump campaign over alleged Russian collusion. THE IMPACT: The guilty plea by Clinesmith is important,

Pelosi Considers Recalling Congress Over USPS Controversy THE PULSE: The U.S. Postal Service is buckling under the

strain of the financial impacts of COVID-19. Many cities throughout the U.S. have experienced slowdowns with their regular mail delivery. The USPS requested $25 billion in aid to help it continue to function smoothly. President Trump is opposed to the additional assistance. In an interview with FOX News, President Trump stated that his opposition to the additional funding for the postal system is because without the funding, “you can’t have universal mail-in voting because they’re not equipped to have it.” Democrats immediately cried foul and accused the president of attempting to undermine the 2020 election by slowing the delivery of mail-in ballots. They also accused the president’s newly installed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy — a Trump campaign mega-donor — of intentionally removing mail-sorting machines from key locations to hamper the processing of votes. Supporters of DeJoy responded that the machines had been removed in an attempt to cut costs and streamline the postal service. Democrats retorted that streamlining the post office in the middle of a pandemic and immediately prior to a presidential election is suspect and out of place. THE IMPACT: President Trump has been a vocal critic of expanded mail-in voting. However, state governments that are tasked with holding elections vouch that the method is safe and secure. In fact, this method has been in place since the Civil War with minimal instances of fraud. Recently, the Supreme Court upheld the right of states to issue mail-in ballots to all citizens due to the concern of in-person vot-

as it addressed abuses by the intelligence community. Overreach by the intelligence community should be of concern to every American. The guilty plea is also being cheered by supporters of the president. They see it as vindication of the narrative that the president’s campaign was unfairly targeted by certain actors in the intelligence community. President Trump has gone so far as to accuse President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden of criminal activity. However Attorney General Bill Barr, who is overseeing the Durham investigation, stated publicly that he does not foresee the Durham probe resulting in a criminal investigation of either Obama or Biden.

Robert Trump, Brother of President Trump, Passes Away THE PULSE: Robert Trump, the younger brother of Presi-

dent Trump, passed away in a Manhattan hospital at the age of 71. President Trump said that “He was not just my brother, he was my best friend. He will be greatly missed.” Trump is expected to attend the funeral, but his brother’s death is not likely to significantly impact his campaign schedule. Joe Biden, whose first wife and daughter died in a 1972 car accident and whose son Beau died from a brain tumor at age 46, offered his condolences: “Mr. President, Jill and I are sad to learn of your younger brother Robert’s passing. I know the tremendous pain of losing a loved one — and I know how important family is in moments like these. I hope you know that our prayers are with you all.” Kamala Harris added her solaces. “Doug and I join the Biden family in sending our deepest condolences and prayers to the entire Trump family during this difficult time. Losing a loved one is never easy, but know that we are thinking of you,” she said in a posted message to the president.

B AT T E R E D C H IC K E N FINGERS WITH CHINESE DIPPING SAUCE

ONION ’N GARLIC CHICKEN FINGERS

Crispy and delicious! Don’t expect leftovers.

This is literally a non-recipe; it’s almost too easy. But somehow, it has picky children asking for more.

Ingredients

Ingredients

1 lb. chicken fingers

1 lb. chicken fingers

1 cup flour

½ tsp. onion powder

1 tsp. baking soda

½ tsp. garlic powder

½ tsp. salt

¼ tsp. salt

¼ tsp. pepper

⅛ tsp. pepper

1 tsp. garlic powder

Minced onion, optional

¼ tsp. cayenne pepper, optional

Directions

1 cup water

1. Place an oven rack four inches away from the broiler.

2 T. apple cider vinegar

2. Season chicken fingers with onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper.

Oil for frying

Chinese Dipping Sauce 1 cup orange juice

3. Place seasoned chicken fingers in a greased baking sheet. Set broiler to high, and broil for 4 to 5 minutes per side. Optional: Coat chicken fingers with minced onion spice.

½ cup brown sugar ¼ cup rice vinegar ¼ cup ketchup 2 T. soy sauce Dash of crushed red pepper flakes, optional 1½ T. cornstarch 2 T. water

Directions 1. Combine flour, baking soda, salt, pepper, garlic powder and cayenne pepper (if using) in a bowl. 2. Stir in water and vinegar. Mix until just combined. It’s okay if the batter is lumpy; overmixing can cause the batter to be tough and doughy.

RICE KRISPIES CHICKEN FINGERS These are irresistible for kids and adults alike.

Ingredients 1 lb. chicken fingers 2 T. honey 2 T. mustard 2 T. mayonnaise 2 cups rice krispies, lightly crushed

3. Heat oil in a frying pan.

Oil for frying

4. Dip chicken fingers in batter, then fry until golden on both sides, taking care not to allow the oil to get too hot and brown the batter too quickly.

Directions

5. Place all dipping sauce ingredients besides the cornstarch and water into a small pot, and bring to a boil. Dissolve cornstarch in the water, and add to the pot. Simmer for another minute, stirring constantly. Refrigerate to cool.

1. Mix honey, mustard and mayonnaise in a bowl. 2. Heat oil in a large frying pan on medium heat. Dip chicken fingers in honey-mustard mixture, and then into rice krispies. 3. Fry until golden on both sides. Make sure the oil doesn’t get too hot or the honey in the mixture will burn.

IN PREVIOUS ERAS,

a cross-water voyage was a monumental undertaking in which safe arrival was never a given. Today, bridges and tunnels take us over increasingly longer distances, with those concerns of yesteryear being little more than water under the bridge. When discussing how a problem is going to be solved or an obstacle overcome, a native Yiddish speaker might be inclined to ask, “Vee kimt dee katz iberen vasser? — How will the cat get across the water?” Successfully traversing a body of water appears to have long been a relatable challenge requiring ingenuity and proven solutions. Throughout history, people have utilized various methods to cross from one landmass to another for economic, geopolitical or other reasons. In today’s connected world, where nearly everyone owns a car and travel is a regular occurrence, bridges and tunnels have become part of our everyday landscape. This is especially so for residents of the NYC metro area, for whom hopping over or under rivers is a practical necessity to get around town. Every day, millions of commutes take place on the countless bridges and tunnels in and around New York City, whether by car, train, bus or truck. Each of these crossings has

56 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

a history of its own, and many are mechanical marvels that broke records at the time they were built.

Bridge or Tunnel? Many aspects are factored into the decision of whether to build a bridge or a tunnel from one specific point to another. Generally speaking, when spanning a short distance, a bridge is far simpler and cheaper to build than a tunnel, but there are many times when a tunnel is preferred. Take, for example, the Hudson River, which hundreds of thousands of people cross every day to get from New Jersey to New York and back. With many piers dotting the West Side Highway, a bridge built in the lowlying areas of Lower Manhattan would take up lots of valuable space and make it difficult for large boats to get into and out of the area. Only farther north, where Fort Lee and Fort Washington sit elevated, was the geography right for the George Washington Bridge to be built high enough for boats to pass underneath. While bridges are often the default option, tunnels do offer many benefits. For one, they have a much smaller above-ground footprint as they don’t require space-consuming access ramps. Bridges also require strong foundations, and the geology of some places aren’t

58 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / August 19, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

well suited for that. On a practical level, tunnels also have the added benefit that they aren’t affected by snow, wind or inclement weather. When it comes to much longer distances, however, the considerations regarding what to build change. If the water is relatively shallow, a long beam bridge can be built on many pylons. However, some sections may have to be elevated or tunneled underwater to allow ships to pass. The famous 17.6-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel in Virginia is one such example, as it includes two mile-long tunnels as well as two elevated bridge sections. In places where the water runs deep, there’s a major shipping lane, or the environment is harsh, it becomes much more costly to build a bridge. Consider the 31-mile Channel Tunnel that links France to the United Kingdom. It cost about $12 billion dollars in today’s currency to build the tunnel, but experts estimate that to build a bridge in its place would cost over ten times that amount! To allow ships to pass, the spans would require strong, deep pylons reaching hundreds of feet into the air and hundreds of feet underwater. When taking into account the winds, the relatively soft seabed and the potential for seawater corrosion, it doesn’t seem like such a bridge will be built anytime soon, despite politicians publicly floating this idea periodically.

Tunnel Vision There are many ways to build a bridge; all you have to do is look up while en route, and you’ll quickly realize this. Tunnels, on the other hand, are inherently mysterious for children and adults alike. You enter into a tube and emerge on the other side of the water, not knowing much about how you passed through. Did you drive under the riverbed or on it? What was beyond the walls of the tunnel? How deep down were you? There are a number of methods for tunnel building, but underwater tunnels have generally been built using heavy tunnel boring machines (TBMs). These circular machines have massive cutters that dig through the rock and soil beneath the water. The excavated material is then removed through the opening of the tunnel, and the walls of the new hole are reinforced with concrete or steel tunnel liners, which form the walls of the tunnel. Another method that is used to create certain tunnels is called cut-and-cover. Sections of the tunnels are prefabricated — manufactured in advance — and a long trench is dug in the surface of the riverbed or ocean floor. The sections are then dropped into the trench, with divers connecting one section to the next. Any remaining water is then pumped out, and the space above the new tunnel is filled with rock and covered up. So whether you’re coming or going this end-of-summer, take a moment to appreciate the incredible mechanical feats that enable us to cross bodies of water at high speeds in complete safety and comfort.

NOTABLE RECORDS AND MILESTONES OF LOCAL BRIDGES AND TUNNELS Holland Tunnel OPENED FOR TRAFFIC IN 1927

This tunnel is named after its chief engineer, Clifford Milburn Holland, who was the first to provide proper ventilation for long underwater vehicular tunnels. Long ducts connect 84 fans to four large buildings, and they are capable of replacing all the air in the tunnel every 90 seconds. Holland died suddenly in 1924, before the tunnel was completed.

George Washington Bridge OPENED FOR TR AFFIC IN 1931

The George Washington Bridge is the busiest motor vehicle bridge in the world, carrying over 100 million vehicles every year! However, if we also count pedestrians and cows, the busiest bridge in the world is the Howrah Bridge in Kolkata, India.

Brooklyn Bridge (1883), Williamsburg Bridge (1903), George Washington Bridge (1931) and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (1964) Remarkably, each of these four bridges was the world’s longest suspension bridge at the time it was built. The Verrazzano Bridge kept the crown until it was surpassed in 1981 by the Humber Bridge in England. It has since fallen into the mid-teens in the length contest.

Previously used as a railroad bridge, this 6,768-footlong 1800’s bridge was reopened in 2009 as the world’s longest footbridge. It has since lost that title to a 7,974-foot walkway in Colorado.

The Brooklyn Bridge during construction

August 19, 2020 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 65 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

The Brooklyn Bridge was essentially engineered by a woman. Is this a true fact, or is it merely my attempt to “sell you the Brooklyn Bridge”? Read on for these and more interesting facts and tales surrounding the prince of the NYC skyline, a suspension bridge with a most fascinating history. OPENING DAY May 24, 1883, was celebrated amid much pomp and ceremony. President Chester A. Garfield led a group of dignitaries, including NYC Mayor Franklin Edson, across the Brooklyn Bridge to the sound of music, fireworks and cheers, plus salutes thundered by cannons in the nearby Brooklyn Navy Yard. Some 1,800 vehicles and 150,000

people crossed the bridge that day. Indeed, the completion of the bridge was a master achievement. As the world’s longest suspension bridge at the time, and the first to be built using steel cable wires, the Brooklyn Bridge was a technological triumph. For the first time, Manhattan and Brooklyn were linked, heralding great economic opportunity and solv-

ing Manhattan’s housing shortage. Yet, a deeper look into the makings of the bridge tells just how victorious this accomplishment was.

PROPOSALS AND PLANS The idea to build a bridge over the East River was already percolating as early as 1800, when the first serious proposal was made. Carpenter and landscaper Thomas Pope suggested a bridge carved completely out of wood. It was nixed because the concept did not seem structurally sound. The proposals kept pouring in. Architects and engineers projected a chain bridge, a wire bridge and even a 100-foot-wide bridge. (The Brooklyn Bridge today is 85 feet wide.) To span the East River, a turbulent waterway crammed with boats, the bridge needed to be elevated enough to accommodate the ships’ masts beneath it, without a drawbridge. It also needed to be nearly twice as long as the longest bridge at the time — the Menai Suspen-

sion Bridge in Wales — for the river is relatively wide. Finally, a feasible offer came from a German immigrant who had studied industrial engineering in Berlin and was the brain behind bridges in both Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. John Augustus Roebling’s vision of a steelwire bridge that “will not only be the greatest bridge in existence, but will be the greatest engineering work of the continent and of the age” won approval. Its design combined two styles — suspension and cable-stayed bridge construction — and was to employ steel, a relatively new building material dubbed the “metal of the future.” It was also slated to be the first construction project to use explosives in pneumatic caissons — a type of watertight, enclosed structure used for building in wet areas. Roebling was chosen as chief engineer.

FOURTEEN YEARS AND TWO GENERATIONS Alas, bringing the concept to completion was far from simple. Just as the project was launching, John Roebling died in a work accident. He was in the middle of surveying the

His scam worked — and Parker managed to “sell” the bridge multiple times, once for the astounding sum of $50,000! Legend has it that he sold the bridge twice a week over a span of nearly two years. The new owners would find out they’d been duped when they tried to install toll booths on the bridge and were stopped by police officers. Parker was arrested several times, and ultimately found himself shipped off to Sing Sing prison in 1928 to serve a life sentence. The sensation triggered the coining of this phrase; thus, Parker’s memory lives on…

It all began when con artist George C. Parker came up with the idea of “selling” the new bridge, despite its public municipal ownership. He targeted gullible tourists and immigrants and was incredibly successful.

area with a compass when his foot was crushed between a ferry and the dock. Though his toes were amputated, Roebling fell into a coma and died of tetanus shortly after. The year was 1869. His son, 32-year-old Washington Roebling, gripped the reins his father had unwillingly forsaken. But tragedy struck again when the younger Roebling, too, suffered a serious accident on the job in 1872. On that fateful day, Roebling was overseeing the caisson work. Caissons, wooden boxes with no bottoms, were sunk into the sea and pumped with compressed air. These were then used as the foundations of the bridge. Caisson workers were nicknamed “sandhogs for the difficult and risky labor they performed, dig-

WINE UNDER THE BRIDGE The bridge was masterfully designed with compartments in its bottom. The large vaults in its anchorage were used to help New York City fund the bridge. Some of the space was used for wine and champagne storage, with the alcohol maintained at a stable temperature throughout the year. Another interesting use for the vaults was discovered in 2006. During a routine structural inspection, city workers chanced upon a hidden nuclear bunker inside one of the massive stone arches of the main entrance on the Manhattan side. Cardboard boxes ink-stamped 1957 and 1962 indicate they were stored there during the Cold War era. They contained many supplies, including medication, water drums and paper blankets. There was also a massive supply of 352,000 calorie-packed crackers!

ging at sand and rock while inside these enormous structures. Washington Roebling was crippled by an attack of caisson disease, otherwise known as decompression sickness caused by the too-rapid decrease in air pressure he was exposed to. It left him paralyzed, deaf and partially blind. Still, Roebling persisted with the project, conducting operations from the window of his apartment in Brooklyn Heights. His wife, Emily Warren Roebling, became a knowledgeable engineer in the process, serving as the messenger between her husband and the worksite. The project continued to meet with one obstacle after another. A compressed air blast in one of the caissons infected many workers with pneumatic caisson, slowing progress. In another caisson, a serious fire blazed for weeks. One cable separated from its anchorage on the Manhattan side of the bridge, crashing into the river. Morale ran low, with skeptics questioning whether the design was safe. Political corruption abounded as well; in one case, a fraudulent steel-wire contractor supplied the project with faulty materials, necessitating the replacement of tons of cable. At least twenty workers were killed during construction.

The sign on the walkway reads, “Safe for only 25 men at one time. Do not walk close together, nor run, jump or trot. Break step!” and it’s signed by W.A. Roebling as the Engineer in Chief.

A BRIDGE CROSSED Emily Warren Roebling was lauded by many as the functioning engineer behind the project. When the bridge was finally complete, Emily was the first to cross it. One week before inauguration day, she hitched a team of horses to her carriage in a proclamation of victory. The imposing beauty of its structure, coupled with its mark of persistence in the face of untold hardship, endeared the new bridge to the masses. Poets, photographers and painters were inspired by its strength and grace. In the days following the grand inauguration display, thousands of New Yorkers walked and rode across the “great avenue” connecting Brooklyn and Manhattan. Just six days later, however, tragedy struck again. A woman tripped down the wooden stairs on the Manhattan side, and spectators began to scream,

rushing toward the scene. Suddenly, the entire promenade was in chaos. People imagined that the bridge was unstable and would certainly collapse. They bolted toward the stairs. Twelve people were trampled to death in the tumultuous mob scene that followed. After the stampede, people were left with lingering doubts. Was the bridge stable enough to carry the crowds? P.T. Barnum grabbed the opportunity to promote his famous circus while restoring public confidence in the bridge. His plan had actually been suggested when the opening ceremony was in its planning stages, and he’d offered to march a troupe of elephants across the bridge as part of the pomp. At the time, officials turned him down. Now, though, they accepted his offer. A queue of twenty-one elephants, seven camels and ten dromedaries, with the famed giant African elephant Old Jumbo taking up the rear, marched across the bridge. The New York Times reported that “to people who looked up from the river at the big arch of electric lights, it seemed as if Noah’s Ark were emptying itself over on Long Island.” Soon, the impressive stature of the long-standing bridge came to represent an American pathway of opportunity and industry.

A BRIDGE BUILT: 1883–2020 Originally known as the “East River Bridge” and the “New York and Brooklyn Bridge,” its shortened name was officially adopted in 1915. The main span of the bridge covers 1,595 feet, the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time of its completion. The bridge cost about $15 million to build. That was more than twice the original estimate — and more than $400 million in today’s cash value. The bridge’s cables have formidable strength. Each one is formed from 19 strands, each of which is composed of 278 separate wires. That amounts to more than 14,000 miles of wire! When it is extremely cold, the Brooklyn Bridge rises three inches. The cables contract in cold temperatures and expand when it gets hot. This has been happening ever since the bridge was built. It’s been 137 years, and the bridge still functions as a vital link for New York commuters. The roads were changed to accommodate vehicles, and the promenade is still a popular attraction for locals, sightseers and tourists.

With tunnels being high up on the list of human achievements, thanks to the sheer creativity and engineering genius involved, there’s so much to be enraptured by. Since you may be intimately acquainted only with the passageways that crisscross the tri-state area, let’s have a look at the faraway, the beautiful and the whimsical.

Railway Tunnel, Ukraine Step into this mini-paradise near Klevan, Ukraine, and feel your heart slow at the fairytale-like scene. This section of railway track canopied by arches of greenery is more than merely picturesque, although it came into being in times that were less than peaceful. They say that the trees forming the walls and ceiling of the tunnel were deliberately planted along the track during the Soviet era to conceal the transport of military hardware. At this point, the paranoia has thankfully worn off, and the Railway Tunnel now affords visitors a breathtaking walk of at least three kilometers. I’d say, cross it slowly while reveling in the beauty and listening to the birds sing.

Bund Sightseeing Tunnel, Shanghai Onward to Shanghai. Out of the ethereal beauty of nature and into man-made multimedia. Prepare to be dazzled and bamboozled! Think you’re just traveling between the districts of Hongkou and Huangpu? For nearly five flabbergasting minutes, you’ll be whisked along in a glass railcar with 360-degree views, which enables you to fully enjoy the sights – and sounds! – of this flashy tunnel. The Bund Tunnel comes with a choice of eight visual themes, each with accompanying sound effects, which include Vortex, Shuttle, Magmatic Ejection and Deepsea. That’s 646 meters of major excitement.

Guoliang Tunnel, China Uh-uh. We’re not traveling this one. Just peek from the side or something, okay? Because see these jagged windows in the mountain face? I know, they do remind you of a bad attempt at sewing, right? But newsflash: There are no guardrails. Oh, and the tunnel is a modest twelve feet wide. In simple Chinese, this roadway is as death-defying as they come. It was 1972, and the people of Guoliang were fed up. High in the Taihang Mountains, the village was cut off from civilization, with the only access point a series of treacherous steps hewn into the mountain stone. Yet as much as the villagers begged, the government was ignoring their pleas for a roadway worthy of their village’s name. So they sold their goats and spices and fixed themselves an arsenal of axes, which they entrusted to the thirteen strongest among them. These men set out, ferociously determined. Inch by inch, they proceeded to hack a passageway into the mountain wall with hand tools! It took them over five years to hew through three-quarters of a mile, with some workmen losing their lives in the process. But in 1977, for the very first time, the village of Guoliang, which now does brisk business from this terrifying tunnel, was accessible by car, and three hotels have even been built to accommodate the rather foolish guests who consider courting death a worthy excursion.

Beihai Tunnel, Taiwan Imagine hide-and-go-seek by sea! I’m sure the Republic of China’s armed forces were dead serious as they carved this tunnel deep into the granite mountains off the Tieban Coast to create a place to stash their boats away from bad weather and attacks. But the Beihai has since been hit by a hurricane, and the Chinese have loosened up since, which is why this underwater dock was remodeled to become quite the lovely public attraction. You can travel its length by rented kayak, or, if the tide is low, take the walkway for free.

Langjokull Ice Cave Tunnel, Iceland Remember being small and working on an igloo all day in the snow? You hacked and hacked, and at the end of the long day, proudly scrunched into a space that barely fit your winter coat. Time for an upgrade! While Langjokull Glacier is the second-largest ice cap in Iceland, its own ice cave outranks it as the largest tunnel of its kind in the world. This ice cave, dug into the glacier, is man-made, which makes it safer and more predictable than natural ones, but the best time to drop in is in the winter, when the tunnel is at its most stable. Schedule your visit within the next decade, however, because moving glaciers don’t make for long-lasting tunnels. Do a guided tour only, as the movement of the glacier can cause terrifying crevasses to form. And once you’ve checked off all the safety boxes, shoo away the fear and be awed by the ice formations and gorgeous, LED-lit chambers as you march over the ice.

Wisteria Tunnel, Japan Can you get over this scene? This feast for the eyes sits in the Kawachi Fuji Garden and is named for the graceful wisteria flowering plant. About 150 of these gorgeous ornamental vines cascade through the squares of the tunnel grid, creating a pastel wonderland. Visit this beauty in the blooming season, because it would be downright sad to go all this way to stare up at tangled branches only, as off-season visitors have described the sight.

Feel the patriotism thrumming as you tour a world marvel right nearby, in Sussex County, New Jersey. Part of the fascinating Sterling Hill Mining Museum, the tunnel is home to a natural formation of fluorescent zinc ore, which glows when exposed to ultraviolet light. So with the flip of a switch, this tunnel comes alive in stunning neons. I cannot wait to lay eyes on it myself when the museum reopens for the public in a post-COVID world. And for all claustrophobics who balk at the prospect of the dim underground, use this pictorial as your virtual tour!

THIS WEEK:

CUTLER’S COTTAGES

Setting the standard for nearly a century Most readers have probably heard some iteration of the joke about the boy who didn’t pay attention during his history lesson, and when the teacher asked him to name the thirteen colonies, began listing the bungalow colonies that quickly came to mind. Whether this ever happened or not, it’s almost certain that Cutler’s Cottages was among the notable colonies that our well-meaning, distracted student blurted out. Cutler’s has long been accepted as one of the respected Catskills classics, home to a community that exemplifies what “going to the country” should be about.

HISTORY Just the name Cutler’s Cottages is notable for two reasons: First, unlike the colonies we featured in recent weeks, Cutler’s has kept its original name from the days before it became a frum colony. More historically notable is the fact that it was identified as cottages and not bungalows like all colonies from that era. To understand why, a little bit of background is required. The Jewish families who rented bungalows in the Catskills in the earlier years were relatively poor. These families mostly lived in cramped buildings throughout the year and desperately needed the fresh air and space for children to play. Unlike the larger hotels, which offered more comfortable amenities and an abundance of food and entertainment, those who rented bungalows or stayed at smaller resorts often stayed in rustic shacks and had bungalows that were good for little more than

just sleeping. There were also some secondrate colonies and boarding houses called kuchaleins (Yiddish for cook-alone) where renters had kitchen privileges to cook for themselves in a shared kitchen. With time, families who made it into the middle class and considered themselves to be of higher social standing often wanted bungalows with enhanced amenities. These upgraded units catered to the needs of the housewives who were too elite for shared kitchens or run-down shacks. One of the colonies that offered these superior rentals was Cutler’s Cottages; you see, they didn’t just have bungalows, they provided “cottages.” Cutler’s was also different from other colo-

90 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / August 19, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

nies in another way. As we’ve seen in this column, most colonies began as farms or boarding houses, which meant that they provided a blend of standalone bungalows, rooms in larger buildings, and apartments. Cutler’s, on the other hand, was an all-bungalow resort and proudly hailed itself as the first “all-bungalow” colony in the Catskills region. Whether this was accurate is hard to prove, but it does help us get a sense of the colony’s view of itself, or at least how it sold itself to the public. Cutler’s was founded by Louis Cutler in 1935. It was among the largest colonies of its day with about 150 units available for rent, and some units were especially fixed up for wealthier vacationers. As a more upscale destination, Cutler’s also boasted a popular day damp that even saw children bused in from Ellenville every day. In fact, there are some historical sources that refer to the colony as Cutler’s Cottages and Day Camp. The colony was eventually taken over by a daughter of the Cutlers, Evelyn Goldstein Malter, and later in the century, like the other colonies of its era, it was sold off to buyers who turned it into a thriving frum bungalow colony.

CUTLER’S TODAY: ACHDUS IN THE MOUNTAINS When discussing Cutler’s with vacationers, former or current, one cannot go more than a sentence or two before the topic of achdus and the colony’s friendly atmosphere inevitably comes up. Baruch Hashem, the frum community has grown to the point where every kehillah and subgroup is able to form an entire colony of their own; yet in this colony, hat- and shtreimel-wearers, suit- and bekitchewearers, all spend their summers together as one big, happy family. The colony is split into three sections, and although two are primarily yeshivish and one chassidish, there are members of all backgrounds in each section and the colony amenities are shared. Since the bungalows are rented on an annual basis, the crowd has changed somewhat throughout the years, but the beautiful camaraderie between the vacationers has remained one great constant.

Cutler’s highlights the Torah of the yeshivah world and chassidish warmth. From Friday afternoon through Motzei Shabbos, an elevated Shabbos atmosphere permeates the colony, with shiurim filling the day and the sounds of zemiros filling the air. Recently, an appeal was held to raise money for a new otzer haseforim in the beis midrash that will benefit the many learners enjoying this place of Torah. All summer, and especially during the weeks of bein hazmanim, the shul hosts learners of all ages, oftentimes deep into the night. The bungalows, or rather cottages, might have been luxurious in their era, but over the years many of the units were upgraded to better accommodate the modern vacationer. A few years ago, six bungalows were completely rebuilt after they fell into a state of disrepair. The bungalows are not very large nor winterized, which has let the colony keep that old-time charm that has long been synonymous with “going to the country.” The spirit of the original Cutler’s does live on in at least one way: The colony’s day camp is highly praised by all. The day camp for boys has multiple grades, and some summers have children enrolled until sixth or seventh grade. It is run by a respected mechanech from a known Brooklyn cheder, and the children receive a very Cutler’s-esque, wellrounded chinuch. In our fast-paced world where trends come and go and yesterday’s fascination is an afterthought tomorrow, Cutler’s has continued standing proud as one of the colonies respected by all and is considered an exemplar of how a frum colony is supposed to look. NEVERSINK RIVER R I O V R E S E AND R

This week we present two locations where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the scenic Neversink River and the Neversink Reservoir it feeds, relatively hidden gems just a short drive from our homes away from home. Keep in mind that while they’re both spots along the same river, these two destinations are a half-hour drive from each other; the reservoir is farther north, and the gorge is to the south of most heimishe summer areas.

COVID-19 ADVISORY Be advised that many parks have reduced parking by 50%, and local roads may have closures in effect. Many popular parks will fill to capacity by noon and close early to incoming visitors and traffic.

NEVERSINK RESERVOIR

This lake, one of the biggest man-made reservoirs, offers fishing and picturesque views. The Neversink Reservoir is fed by the Neversink River, and together with the waters of the Pepacton and Cannonsville reservoirs, it provides nearly half of New York City’s daily consumption of water. The reservoir sits upon the former site of two hamlets, Neversink and Bittersweet, which were ironically flooded in 1941 to create this reservoir. (Neversink was then relocated a bit over a mile away.) Outside boats are not allowed on the reservoir; only those left on site for the entire season may be used. For boat rentals on the lake, refer to Issue 44 of The Boro Park View. Neversink Road, Neversink, NY 12765 Park along the road where you find a spot. 10–20 minutes from most areas

NEVERSINK GORGE NEVERSINK RIVER UNIQUE AREA

This area is a huge, beautiful preserve for hiking, fishing and camping, crisscrossed with streams and three waterfalls with the gorgeous Neversink River running through it. While there are several access points to the Neversink River Unique Area, the one we featured is the most convenient for falls and river access. Consider parking at Wolf Brook Multiple Use Area if the Katrina Falls parking lot is full. A 40-minute hike (each way) takes you to the river (Blue Trail Yellow Trail); an hour-long hike takes you to Mullet Falls (Blue Trail Red Trail Yellow Trail). The Blue Trail takes you directly to the High Falls, a stunning spot — about three miles each way. The Three Falls Loop, which passes all three falls — Mullet Falls, Denton Falls and High Falls — is strenuous at eight miles long and some uphill sections, and is not recommended for anyone who’s not very trained. Parking: Katrina Falls Trailhead 754 Katrina Falls Road, Rockhill, NY 12775 15–25 minutes from most areas Open 24 hours

SAFETY POINTERS • Proper packing: Never leave for a hike without a proper knapsack equipped with enough water, charged cell phones, navigation devices, flashlights, emergency shelter, a first-aid kit, and some ready-toeat, non-perishable nutrition options. • Proper planning: Before leaving the trailhead, acquire a map, study it well, and know your route. Always check the weather before heading out. Do not attempt this hike without a map. • Proper footgear: Remember to change into proper footwear, appropriate for the terrain, prior to setting out. • Hikers should never hike alone, and always share their plans with someone outside of the hiking group before heading out. • Stay on track. Read and follow all markers and do not veer off the trail. • Always check for ticks after a hike.

There’s something about a well-kept home exterior and the welcoming way it greets visitors, all but inviting them to dash up the neatly swept steps. A facade that’s tidy and functional like that is something every homeowner can gift his home sweet home. Foundation

Gutters

Number one in home maintenance is a sound foundation. And moisture is its worst enemy. Every home needs a good drainage system to keep the gishmei bracha at bay.

A home gutter serves the same purpose as its street counterpart. It runs horizontally around the roof of a home before angling downward, carrying rainwater away from the roof and foundation. Water should be carried at least six feet away from the home foundation. Gutter extensions are easy to add to the gutter end, or downspout, and can be found in any hardware store. A common frustration with gutters is clogging from leaves and other debris. A gutter guard is a terrific helper in keeping out the mess, with the micromesh screen variety scoring the most points for effectiveness.

Concrete Steps Concrete sealer keeps off serious grime and mold and should be applied by a professional. But if nature has already taken its course on your unprotected steps, grab a scrub brush. The green on the concrete can and will go away with mold-killing detergent or bleach with water. Let the bleach solution soak in for a while, and use more elbow grease for better results.

Chimneys

Power Washing

“You look like a chimney sweep” may sound like a dig from a previous century, but chimney maintenance should be alive and well if your roof boasts that homey feature. And yes, that’s true even if you’re not enjoying warm crackling in your fireplace. The Chimney Safety Institute of America says an active chimney needs a check at least once a year. Unused chimneys should be sealed either on top or on bottom so air can still flow through and prevent moisture from accumulating. Cap your chimney with a cover and mesh designed to keep out precipitation and animals.

Invite a pro to power wash your home exterior when it looks like it needs it. You’ll get a sparkling facade and be rid of mildew, which can seep inside your walls and damage your interior. Power washing uses heated water and can be too tough for some exteriors. Speak to a professional to see if your house needs a pressure wash — a similar process that uses cold water — instead.

Vegetation

Lawn Furniture

Greenery around your home is nature’s priceless gift and hikes up curb appeal. Shrubbery hugging the exterior, though? Bad news. Impose modest social distancing of at least a foot between shrub and wall — and be grateful for the mildew you have prevented! Overhanging branches should also be trimmed to avoid damaged roof shingles and a gutterful of leaves.

Anything left outside is at the mercy of the elements and can start showing the ick factor pretty fast. Keep lawn furniture inviting by treating it to a good scrub with one part bleach to ten parts water. Want your grass to stay alive? Do this off the lawn and have the excess water run to the curb.

Imagine... Weeds Here’s a hack to stunt weed growth. After weeding, add old newspapers under mulch. These will let water through, but block the imposters from dancing among your flowers. The paper will eventually decompose into the earth — and keep it posted on all political stats, surely!

Asphalt Cracks Well, those can use a crackdown. Buy a good crack filler to use on small cracks as soon as they’re discovered. Untreated, they will spread pretty fast and need professional help, so a fill in time will save you a gold mine.
