LIFTING THE LOCKS (Re: To Happy Hair Days, Issue 42) I’d like to express my greatest appreciation to The Boro Park View for creating such an amazing magazine. After following along the back and forth of shared hair care tips, I’d like to ask if anyone has some ideas on how to care for my daughter’s oily, but frizzy and dull, hair. Thank you in advance! YOUR VOICE WATCH THE WASTE I’m not one to write in all my grievances to a magazine, yet yesterday I witnessed an appalling sight that left me quite disturbed. I was waiting on the pickup line for the school food boxes when I saw a couple of girls pick up their boxes. Immediately upon leaving the distribution area they proceeded to remove the bottles of milk from their boxes and throw them into a dumpster. I am not sure how throwing out milk is okay anywhere, but blatantly throwing it out seconds after receiving it was a horrible thing to witness. What terrible baal tashchis! As someone who is involved with food distribution for the needy families in our communities throughout the year, I find this especially hurtful. What kind of message are we sending to our children when we are okay with throwing out a perfectly good and fresh bottle of milk? What kind of message are we sending to our children when we are taking far more food boxes than are allotted for us and disposing of what we don’t need or want? I know that we are now faced with an abundance of milk. There are still plenty of people within our community who do not have milk: non-Jewish hired help, adults without children in the school system, etc. It may take time to have the milk placed, but there are people who will take it and enjoy it. We need to be our children’s role models and teach them that food needs to be respected. We make a bracha on food to thank Hashem for our bounty. In this week’s parsha, we learn about the aveirah of baal tashchis. It is discussed how in the times of Rabbi Yehuda Hanassi in Bavel, food was plentiful. He once saw children playing with food and throwing around loaves of bread. By looking at that, he realized that as long as food was in abundance and plentiful people were not treating it with respect. The Yidden were then cursed, and it stopped raining. The crops began to die, and the people began to starve. Only then did they realize how important food is. They did teshuvah, and it began to rain again. In the merit of being more careful with food, may we be zoche to shefa and bracha in our lives. Grateful for the Abundance

Mayor Vows to Step Up Efforts After Local Wedding Sparks Coronavirus Spike With well over a dozen new COVID-19 cases linked to a Boro Park wedding, Mayor Bill de Blasio said that the city will be doubling down its efforts to prevent the virus from spreading further in the area. Gothamist reported that the mayor stopped short of categorizing the coronavirus cases linked to the recent wedding as a cluster, referring to them instead as “an early warning sign.” Under current state law, indoor gatherings are subject to a 50-person maximum, and de Blasio said that the wedding in question far exceeded that amount. The mayor emphasized that he was not looking to punish anyone for violating capacity laws but that the city would focus on increasing testing rates and community outreach in Boro Park, much like it did during an earlier outbreak in Sunset Park. “We’re going to figure out what we can do to address the situation retrospectively, but I’m really more concerned about going forward; we got to identify the folks at that wedding and make sure that any spread is contained,” said de Blasio. According to Politico, the concept that Boro Park’s Jewish community has developed herd immunity because so many have already had the coronavirus has been widely discussed, but this recent spike may prove otherwise, noted the mayor. “I don’t think we have any evidence of herd immunity anywhere in New York City,” said de Blasio. “I think we’re nowhere near that point.”
Utility Companies Facing Penalties and Possible Franchise Losses Over Poor Storm Handling With power outages lasting a week or longer for tens of thousands of customers in the New York area, Governor Andrew Cuomo slammed four area utility providers for their abysmal response to Tropical Storm Isaias, threatening to pull their franchises. Cuomo’s remarks came amid the initial stages of a New York State Department of Public Service investigation into Con Edison, Orange & Rockland, PSEG Long Island and Cen-

tral Hudson’s handling of the storm. Notice of Apparent Violation letters have been sent to all four electric companies as well as Altice-Optimum advising them that they face potentially significant fines and that immediate corrective measures need to be taken to protect customers as the hurricane season continues. According to Cuomo, the initial phase of the DPS inquiry determined that both Con Edison and Orange & Rockland
failed to properly serve customers by having inaccurate communications, website problems and inadequate prestaging for Isaias. The governor noted that this is the first time that the Department of Public Service has issued violation letters at the start of an investigation that is being moved along quickly, with a six-month completion target for a process that normally takes one to two years. Cuomo has warned that the state could terminate its agreements with the utility companies and has also looped the state’s Department of Financial Services into the review of the storm response. Legislation being proposed by the governor will address numerous issues associated with a potential franchise loss, which would include the ownership of the utility’s assets, including substations, cables and trucks, and how they could be transferred to a new entity. “These utility companies predict when we’re going to have storms and when we’re going to have emergencies,” observed Cuomo. “That’s the art form of the business and what we pay them for. They need to do better, and we are holding them ac-
countable.” Approximately 1.3 million New Yorkers lost power in storm-related outages.
Trash the Trash Violations, Local Elected Officials Say to Sanitation Department A quartet of Brooklyn elected officials have joined together, penning a letter asking New York City Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia to dismiss violations issued during the height of the pandemic. The August 18th letter noted that law-abiding citizens obeying shelter-in-place orders found themselves facing $300 fines for not going outside and cleaning up their properties. It described the tickets as “unreasonable” and requested that summonses issued between March 18 and June 8 be withdrawn immediately. “While clean streets and sidewalks are important, health and safety must be our priority during times of unprecedented crisis,” concluded the letter, which was signed by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, State Senator Simcha Felder and City Councilman Kalman Yeger.
Court Ruling Clears the Way for Plastic Bag Ban to Resume The plastic shopping bag ban that was temporarily set aside amid coronavirus worries is set to resume soon, now that an Albany Supreme Court justice has rejected a challenge posed by a Long Island plastic bag manufacturer. Hamodia reported that Judge Gerald Connolly ruled in favor of the state’s Department of Environmental Conservation last Thursday, rejecting claims that the plastic bag ban was flawed, posed an insurmountable financial hardship and was unsafe during the pandemic. Connolly also struck down an exemption to the ban that allowed stores to use thicker-gauge plastic bags. No further legal challenges to the bag law are expected to be raised when the state legislative session resumes next year, according to Democrat & Chronicle. The DEC said that it will begin providing 30-day notices to state stores and businesses as required by law before they begin enforcing the ban again. “The court’s decision is a victory and a vindication of New York State’s efforts to end the scourge of singleuse bags and a direct rebuke to the plastic bag manufacturers who tried to stop our law,” said DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos.

Recap: Eliyahu shares his plan to buy a Sefardic sefer Torah and donate it to a shul. On the ship to Eretz Yisroel together with the other boys in Rabbi Walkin’s orphanage, Gustav broods about the fact that everyone besides him seems to know their name and other details of their background and past. Blumi left the shul. She leaned on the gate near the stairs leading up to the women’s section and waited for Gideon to finish davening. Although they had already been in Eretz Yisroel this winter — albeit not for good reasons — it was their longstanding tradition to spend Pesach in Yerushalayim, and here they were in the same apartment they rented each year. “Excuse me? Can you give something?” Blumi turned her head to the outstretched hand, and her eyes opened wide. Suppressing a gasp, she quickly placed a twenty-shekel bill into the woman’s plastic fingers, and hurried away. “Thank you!” she heard the call behind her. “Tizku l’mitzvos!” There you are, her thoughts chased her. You thought that by paying your brothers for the yad that had disappeared because of your negligence, you’d finally be able to calm down. Really? It’s just not happening. Even the prosthetic hand of a tzedakah collector brings you right back into that rut. “Tell them what happened, once and for all,” Gideon had said to her, once, twice, three times. “They might even be able to help you find it.” “No,” she’d replied, voice tremulous but her resolve firm. “I already tried to ask Shmulik, indirectly, about the bachur who disappeared with the yad, without telling him why I needed to know. And he didn’t help me much.” “It’s because you didn’t tell him why you needed to know,” was her husband’s wise answer. “I’m sure that if you would have told him why you were asking, he would have understood
the importance of it and would have made more of an effort to help you, instead of just giving you the number of someone who also just threw a few phone numbers at you.” “Shmulik did want to help me!” she had protested, offended on her brother’s behalf. “Of course — I didn’t say he didn’t. But when you asked him casually about bachurim who do this kind of thing, without specifying the reason for your question, then of course there’s no reason for him to make too much of an effort to find the bachurim who were there with your father. I think that it’s worth a try…” “No,” she’d repeated, sounding defeated. “No, no and no.” “Fine, so no,” Gideon had said, for the umpteenth time. “Do whatever you like. I just wanted to help.” He wanted to help her, but she still felt so helpless, wretched and miserable. Every little thing reminded her of her own negligence that had led to the loss of the yad that had been so significant to her father. The one that would remind him that a person can learn from failure, and move on in life. But she never seemed to learn. Was it any wonder that her brothers were sure that Gideon’s money had turned her into a lazy, spoiled woman who didn’t think for a moment before she did something? Beri had once told it to her gently; the others were more forthright. A few years ago, Gavriel, Shlomo Aryeh and Shmulik had literally laughed

that she would soon forget how to clean a kitchen by herself. It had happened when she’d remarked, during one of her visits to their parents, that milk had spilled under the fridge and that she had to tell the cleaning lady to clean it the next day. As if they had ever cleaned their parents’ house! She, the only daughter, had been her mother’s right hand. But they linked everything to her pampered life. True, as the only daughter, she had been somewhat spoiled, but then why was it that when her Kobi, who was learning in Yerushalayim, came down with pneumonia, and she automatically booked him a ticket to come home, they claimed that the money had dulled her head and taught her not to think? She was positive that if they would hear about the story with the yad, they would wonder out loud how anyone could do such a thing. How do you give such a valuable item to someone whom you don’t know, without finding out who he is? Not to mention that any one of them would also express surprise about the timing that she had chosen, and note yet again that money just seemed to get her into trouble. Just imagining herself asking Shmulik to help her find that bachur he’d arranged… it was enough to make her shudder. Because it would not make a difference that she had been married to Gideon for twentyfour years already. Shmulik would once again be her big brother, older than her by sixteen years. He would stand in front of her that same way as when she’d told him about the shidduch with Gideon, and he would say, “So again money mixed up your mind, Blumi.” And his expression would be critical, stinging. She felt those stings, literally. And, oh, how they hurt her! Perhaps she needed to go for therapy. Not that she hadn’t done so over the years. She had visited several psychologists, a Bach flower remedies clinic, a life coach, and a One Brain practitioner. But none of these thera-
pies had ever been able to help her resolve the question of, Why does everyone around me look at my money and not at me? The third or fourth psychologist she had tried once asked her what she was good at, and she’d replied, “Embroidery.” The psychologist had laughed, perhaps thinking it was a
her gaze on a small cloud skittering across the sky. So her brothers claimed that money had made her thick-headed and foolish. It was not true — she knew that! — and that was not the reason she’d taken the yad that her father had loved. But that’s exactly what they would claim, if they would hear the story. It really was a shame that Beri hadn’t taken the yad for safekeeping; too bad she’d gone and tried to do it… “Blumi?” Gideon. On the phone. He’d finished davening and hadn’t found his wife at the spot where they’d made up to meet. Obviously — she had fled from that prosthetic hand that had reached out to her for tzedakah and had forgotten that she’d made up with her husband to meet at the staircase. It was a good thing he was so tolerant and forgiving of her dreamy nature. Shlomo Aryeh, Shmulik and Gavriel would have claimed that this was also because of the money. “Oh, hi, Gideon. Did you finish davening? I was standing where we made up to meet, but I needed to get away from there. Here, I see you.” He didn’t ask where she’d gone and why, and she was glad about that. She couldn’t bring up the subject of the lost yad again; he was likely to totally lose patience. He stood waiting for her near the stairs. “If you have something to take care of, it’s fine with me,” he said, once they met. “But I don’t have a key to the apartment with me.” “Batsheva is there,” his wife reminded him. “Although she may have gone out — she did say she wanted to visit one of her friends. In any case, I planned to go back with you now.” “So it’s okay?” “It’s fine,” Blumi said, but her tone made it evident that it wasn’t fine at all. Gideon wondered what was so bad about him forgetting to take a key, having no idea that her “fine” — or not-so-fine — state had nothing to do with him. It was all about the jumble of thoughts that were crashing around in her mind.
Because it would not make a difference that she had been married for twenty-four years already. Shmulik would once again be her big brother, older than her by sixteen years.

joke. Then she’d added, “And knitting.” The psychologist had laughed even harder. She’d taken that to mean that her situation was so sad, it was laughable. Here was a woman of — how old had she been at that point? Thirty-two? — who was so pampered that her only skill was basically being a knitting grandma. She felt that way to this day: She was married to a highly successful, well-known businessman, yet the only thing that she was good at was embroidery and knitting. There were women who helped their husbands in business and even served in management positions. They came to the factories or offices and participated in the decisionmaking… but she was never like that. Gideon shared information with her, but he did not really need her advice. Then there were those women who, while not necessarily having business acumen, were at least amazing on the home front… but she wasn’t good at housekeeping either. True, as a girl, she’d been a good cleaner, but it would not be appropriate for a woman of her age and status to be cleaning a house. They had a cleaning lady, and the house was very well maintained. Cooking and baking wasn’t her forte either, especially since she’d hired Miss Evelyn, the cook. Blumi took a deep breath, fixing

Democratic Convention Concludes THE PULSE: The Democratic National Convention drew
to a close on Thursday night with the acceptance speech of Joe Biden as the party’s 2020 nominee. The convention portrayed a vision of unity for America and highlighted speakers from across the political spectrum. Below are some of the highlights:
support from the progressive flank of the party who feel that he is too focused on appealing to centrist elements of the party. THE OLD GUARD: The convention featured speeches and messages from recent Democratic presidents and presidential nominees. Former presidents Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama addressed the convention as did former party nominees senators John Kerry and Hillary Clinton. President Obama used his address to issue his sharpest criticism of the Trump administration to date.
THE 2020 PRIMARY CANDIDATES: Biden’s 2020 prima-
ry candidates came out in force to back his candidacy. Former candidates appeared throughout the convention. Keynote addresses were delivered by senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Amy Klobuchar. Warren and Sanders’ support is essential for Biden, as he has received lukewarm

THE REPUBLICANS: Several Republicans crossed the aisle to express their support for the Biden candidacy. Former Ohio Governor John Kasich delivered a keynote address. Cindy McCain spoke about her late husband John McCain’s close relationship with Joe Biden. Former New Jersey Gov-
ernor Christine Todd Whitman and former Pennsylvania Congressman Charlie Dent both issued endorsements for Biden. General Colin Powell, who served in the Bush administration (and has supported Democrats in the past), also addressed the convention. It is not that unusual for a party to highlight support from members of an opposing party. Democratic Governor Zell Miller of Georgia spoke in support of George W. Bush in 2004, and Democratic Senator Joe Lieberman spoke in favor of John McCain’s candidacy in 2008. However, the number of Republican crossovers and the amount of time allotted to Republicans at this convention is a testament to the Biden campaign’s attempts to show that he can appeal to all Americans. Many progressives griped that Republicans received more speaking time than leaders of their movement. THE STORIES: The convention also highlighted the per-
sonal life stories of individual Americans. Ady Barkan, who has ALS, spoke about how he has benefited from the ACA/ Obamacare and how he backs Biden’s plans for health care. Brayden Harrington, a thirteen-year-old boy who stutters, spoke about how Joe Biden helped him overcome his speech impediment. Michael Beale talked about how Joe Biden unexpectedly showed up for a shivah call to a woman who had donated $18 to all his campaigns beginning with the first time he ran in 1972. Much focus was placed on Biden’s personal life story, emphasizing how he coped with multiple tragedies in his life, such as the death of his wife and young child in a car accident in 1972 and the death of his son Beau at age 46 from brain cancer. THE FAMILIES: Joe Biden’s wife addressed the convention, as did the Biden children and grandchildren. Kamala Harris’ sister also spoke about her family and her sister’s fighting spirit. KAMALA HARRIS: Harris addressed the convention on
Wednesday night and received mixed reviews. Her address was considered good but not memorable, and it did not hit many highs. JOE BIDEN: Joe Biden delivered what many consider to be
the best speech of his career. Expectations were low, as Biden has a tendency to make gaffes, and many on the right have been arguing that his mental acuity is showing signs of decline. However, Biden rose to the occasion and delivered a tight, passionate and moving speech. He called out President Trump’s response to Charlottesville and his categorization of “very fine people on both sides.” He called on the country to unite and put hatred and division behind it. Fox News’ Chris Wallace called the speech “enormously effective,” and Fox’s Dana Perino said that Biden “hit a home run in the bottom of the ninth.” Republican strategist Karl Rove concurred that it was “a very good speech.” THE IMPACT: Despite the unusual virtual format due to
COVID-19, the DNC convention was billed as a success. Polls show that the Biden-Harris ticket received a bounce from the convention week. However, convention bounces tend to dis-
sipate, and it remains to be seen if the Democrats can channel the energy of the convention into a strong grassroots campaign.
Republicans Announce RNC Roster THE PULSE: The Republican National Convention will take
place Monday through Thursday. It, too, will be a mostly virtual event. President Trump will speak each night of the convention and deliver his keynote acceptance speech on Thursday night from the White House lawn. Trump’s children, Don Jr., Ivanka, Eric and Tiffany, are scheduled to address the convention. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy will speak as well. Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the St. Louis couple who waved their guns at black lives matter protesters approaching their property, will also be given a speaking slot. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani will endorse the president and make a case for reelection. Alice Marie Johnson, who was convicted for cocaine trafficking and received clemency from the president after spending 21 years in prison, will speak about the president’s work for criminal justice reform. Noticeably absent will be former Republican President George Bush and 2008 Republican nominee Senator Mitt Romney. THE IMPACT: According to Axios, the convention’s theme
will focus on the forgotten men and women of America. The convention will also include a nightly 10 p.m. surprise. The convention will undoubtedly highlight the accomplishments of President Trump’s first term. It will seek to convince Americans to allow him to finish the job and elect him to a second term.
Convention Counter Programming THE PULSE: According to past political norms, an opposing
party ceases to campaign during their opponent’s convention. However, this year is anything but ordinary. President Donald Trump held campaign events and responded in real time during the week of the DNC. The Democrats intend to follow suit and have released a slate of counter-programming that will run concurrently to the RNC. Additionally, a convention of Never Trump Republicans billed as the Convention of Founding Principles will be running a full slate of speakers parallel to the RNC. Their list includes former RNC Chairman Michael Steele, former Freedom Caucus member Mark Sanford (who shortly ran against Trump in the primaries), and Former White House Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci. THE IMPACT: The bitter partisan divide and the heated po-
litical rancor gripping America has caused politicians to do away with many unwritten rules of political engagement. Advances in technology have also contributed to these developments. It remains to be seen if these new norms will become established for future campaigns.

S P E LT B R E A D I N A BREAD MACHINE If you have a bread machine collecting dust in the attic, now may be the perfect time to make use of it again. Waking up to the welcoming aroma of fresh bread is a treat.
W H O L E-W H E AT L OAV E S Delicious and nutritious, these are approved by the most finicky of eaters! This recipe consists of a 60/40 blend. To make the dough using only whole-wheat flour, increase the water to six cups.

11 oz. warm water 1½ T. Grain Brain organic sugar 4 T. olive oil 4½ cups Grain Brain light spelt flour
2 lb. Grain Brain white flour
5½ cups warm water
3½ oz. honey
4 level T. salt
4 level T. Grain Brain yeast
6 oz. oil
Directions
2 tsp. kosher salt 2 tsp. Grain Brain dry yeast
1. Place the flours in a bowl. 2. Make a well, then pour in the honey and yeast.
Directions 1. Set the bread machine to a basic 2-pound loaf recipe. (My machine takes two hours. You can set your machine on a timer, if you’d like.)
3. Add 2 cups of water, and wait three minutes until the yeast starts to activate. 4. Add salt, oil and the rest of the water.
2. Place the water, sugar and oil in the bowl.
5. Knead until a soft dough forms. Let the dough rest for 10 minutes, and then knead the dough for another 3 minutes.
3. Pour the flour over those ingredients.
6. Cover the dough and allow it to rise for 1 hour.
4. Put the salt on one side of the bowl and the yeast on the other side, taking care that these two ingredients don’t touch each other.
7. Punch down the dough and divide it into four equal pieces. Roll out each piece into a rectangle.
5. Start the machine. Enjoy the results! Note: This recipe can be made with wholewheat flour; add an additional 2 ounces water.
8. Roll up each rectangle tightly and place it in a large loaf pan. 9. Cover the loaves, and allow them to rise for 20 minutes. 10. Set the oven at 350°. Place the loaves in the cold oven and bake for 1 hour. 11. To make rolls: Divide the dough into 28 pieces. Form balls. Bake at 350° for 40 minutes.

9. Let the rolls rise for 15 to 20 minutes. 10. Preheat the oven to 375°. Bake for approximately 20 to 25 minutes.

THE AVENUE IS BUSTLING. Swarms of humanity pass by, many people rushing, some ambling, others stopping mid-stride to leisurely inspect the wares displayed attractively in the windows. Some are here to shop. Some to browse. Some are just passing through. And some are here to revel in the social experience the thoroughfare teeming with locals offers. The door of the ice cream store opens, and out spills a gaggle of teenagers, the sweetness lingering on their tongues; they’ve come for the last licks of summer. Young housewives on their way home from work stop in for a quick grocery run as they mentally plan their supper menu. The shoe-store line snakes out the door as the early birds take to the shops, ignoring the summer still begging to be savored, and some spectators are startled that the inevitable has arrived. Strollers are parked haphazardly in little crannies, crammed one into the other in every spare space. Some are occupied, an older sibling hovering over the younger one. Some are empty, the little ones lucky enough to tag along inside to tug at their mother’s skirt as she attempts to cross another few items — hosiery, socks, hair accessories — off her endless shopping list. The bakery exhausts channel the heavenly fresh scent out to the streets, and the passersby trickle in for a quick bite of something doughy and sweet before resuming their pace. Farther down the avenue, the thumping beat turns into full-fledged song as one nears Nigun Music’s storefront, where the latest in heimishe music spills out to the street, beckoning potential customers to stop for a beat, cock an ear, and perhaps bring home the joy. Eichler’s, icon of 13th Avenue, stands

What’s in a Name? On Chanukah 2012, 13th Avenue between 36th and 60th streets was renamed Raoul Wallenberg Way to honor the Swedish diplomat who saved some 100,000 Hungarian Yidden during the war — many of whom settled in Boro Park and raised their families in the neighborhood. In fact, Boro Park is home to the largest concentration of Holocaust surviors in the United States.

squarely at the corner of 50th, the spot it’s been occupying proudly since 1987. Timeless, quaint shops, landmarks in their own right, stand in a dusty haze side by side with polished glass storefronts boasting modern designs on this avenue that’s a conglomeration of old and new, of yesterday and today — a perfect manifestation of the shifting sands of time.
The People On a given day, the avenue is trod upon by locals from throughout the grid, but a large percentage of its visitors are here from afar. They drive in from Williamsburg, from Monsey, from Baltimore, and from as far out as Canada. They fly in from LA, London and Eretz Yisroel. For after all, there’s no better place to outfit a kallah in anticipation of the most important day of her life. When asked why they come, the answer is simple, and it’s been the same for years: to get a great selection of high-quality wares at competitive prices. Because the mile-long stretch of 13th Avenue that extends through Boro Park has come to be known as the shopping capital of the heimishe world. The bus shelters at day’s end fill to capacity, with out-oftowners heading home loaded down with shopping bags of goods they acquired in their day on this famous avenue. The Mood Intensifies In Elul, the action takes on a frenetic pace, and the congestion is at a premium. And parking? The longstanding joke of renaming this borough “Boro No Park” takes on untold significance. Come Tishrei, the sights and sounds are reminiscent of a Yerushalmi shuk, with arbaah minim and an endless variety of sukkah items laid out on tables and spilling out of bins at and around 53rd Street, the Grand Central Station that is Shomer Shabbos — and spreading down, down the avenue as far as the eye can see. Men stare intently through eye loupes and scrutinize their finds. There’s haggling and banter, and the exchange of these precious gems that are laid out in the open. Want to hear it in the words of a NYC touring company? Timeline Touring talks about Boro Park and its shopping experience, saying: “This part of 21st century New York City is reminiscent of old-time Europe — with an ultra modern twist! See how a cherished culture of yesteryear endures alongside up-to-date technology and urbanization.”
A Block of Banks? The banks dotting 13th Avenue are a phenomenon much discussed in the world at large. Currently, there are 20 banks in the Boro Park section of 13th Avenue, more than half of them between 44th and 48th streets. There are actually 19 different banks; Chase is the only one with two branches in this area.
A Look Back in Time When did 13th Avenue become the linear heart of Boro Park? Its distinction as such is more than a century in the making. Yiddish immigrants began to trickle into Boro Park at the turn of the 20th century, and by the time the 1930s rolled around, 13th Avenue, “the center of activities, where all the necessities of life were available,” in the words of the author of Brooklyn Roots, was lined with pushcart vendors and pickle sellers. In the late 1930s, the city opened a public market on 42nd Street to regulate the shopping experience, and officials put health and sanitary guidelines in place. More markets were later established, and 13th Avenue gentrified from there, eventually becoming home to all types of stores — from those carrying standard goods, to eateries, to specialty shops, to a variety of retail offerings lining the street. One of the oldest public markets, built in October 1939 on 13th Avenue and 39th Street, had 137 stalls. The building is still intact, now housing part of Gourmet Glatt. Some of the signage is still there, though the sign reading, “City of New York Department of Markets” has been removed. One of Brooklyn’s first indoor public markets is today home to Gourmet Glatt.

Our staff’s credentials: To become a licensed pharmacist, seven to eight years of schooling are required, as well as an internship period (a year or two into schooling, students can start their internship working under a licensed pharmacist to gain experience). Pharmacist techs, who assist the pharmacists by preparing the scripts, do not need licensure.
We hire salespeople who are skilled at sewing and alterations and who have fine taste in clothing. Our busiest season is between Pesach and Shavuos, when our add-on station is turning out solutions for new summer wardrobes, followed by a busy jewelry season as graduation time rolls around.
The scripts we keep filling are those for diabetes, blood pressure, high cholesterol and asthma — and Amoxicillin! During flu season, Tamiflu prescriptions keep coming in. Over-the-counter items fly off the shelves before Pesach, when everyone’s buying at least one of every item; before camp, when every kid is getting at least one of each item and families are stocking up for the country; and then again at summer’s end, when it’s time to restock the house post-country.

I grew up in Boro Park — at the edge of Boro Park, at 9th Avenue and 56th Street. In those days, Boro Park’s parameters were from 45th Street and 9th Avenue to 55th Street and 18th Avenue. Most of the store owners and salespeople on 13th Avenue were Hungarian Holocaust survivors. It was not a pretty avenue, nor was it particularly clean. But it had everything you could possibly want, and then some. Everyone, and I mean everyone, shopped on 13th Avenue. Nowadays, when I shop on 13th Avenue, I am cloaked in warmth and nostalgia. Come along with me as I help my mother by doing the Friday afternoon shopping on my way home from school: As I walked up 47th Street from 14th Avenue, I arrived at the bakery to pick up challos. No buying kokosh cake; my mother had already baked some on Thursday night. There, the salesladies whispered among themselves about how the “toknyos” had grown so big and beautiful. (They didn’t know, of course, that I understood every word they were saying.) And I couldn’t leave the bakery until the saleslady, Mrs. Beinhorn, inquired about each member of my family, sent them all regards and wished me the warmest gut Shabbos. I could’ve also stopped by at Weiss’s Bakery, housed in the basement of their home off 13th Avenue, and gotten the same reception. Every baal simcha knew that

Amnon’s pizza shop on 48th Street was a rare treat reserved only for special Fridays, birthdays, good report card celebrations, or the day or night of bedikas chometz. In those days, as children of Holocaust survivors, who could afford more than that? But dear, sweet Rose, always in her white uniform and apron, made those visits special. She would warm your cherry or blueberry cheese knish to just the right temperature. She would ask about all the members of your family, how you were doing in school, and then present your order with such warmth and aplomb that it rivaled that of a maître d’ or chef at Cordon Bleu. And was it Amnon himself who manned the pizza and falafel counters?

The fact that they were open late allowed us to really visit whenever we needed, and to make sure every kallah celebrated her engagement in style.

Kosher Delight was a mainstay on 13th Avenue for decades. It was my first “formal dining” experience, a really big deal in my childhood eyes. When my sophisticated Australian cousins came to town, we’d even be treated to some franks and corn on the cob! Recently I bumped into a friendly non-Jew who told me that her first interaction with Orthodox Jews was when working as a cashier in Kosher Delight. And, of course, Wonderland, with its mini carousel outside, was a 13th Avenue landmark for decades. Personally, the memories hit even closer to home, as when I was a child, my grandmother was a saleslady there!

(Anyone remember telephone booths? They were located strategically all over 13th Avenue. If you forgot your grocery list, needed to know what exactly to buy at the bakery, or just wanted to ask your mother to iron your favorite dress, you put a quarter in the slot and dialed. Sometimes you found someone else’s quarter in the return slot, and that really made your day.) There was also Hochberg’s grocery on 52nd Street, but when it came to groceries, Se-
mel’s was king. And what would Shabbos be without gefilte fish and carp or white fish? No need for an exact address; just cross the street and follow your nose to Freund’s fish store, between 53rd and 54th streets. There, the fish was pulled from the tank and soon presented to you, complete with its glassy-eyed stare, accusing you of allowing it to be killed. As the hour is late, and my mother is waiting to make Shabbos, I must end our tour here. But not without an acknowledgement of my gratitude for having grown up in this vareme shtut — the warm location known as Boro Park, with 13th Avenue as its hub.
I remember in the late 1970s and early 1980s when the pizza shops would pour ketchup into baby bottles for each table. (I guess it was more cost-effective than buying individual ketchup bottles.) My grandfather, who was a Holocaust survivor, couldn’t understand how people could just pick up a food with their bare hands and eat it. He’d tell us that in Europe, people were refined and ate their food properly. So when we brought him pizza, he’d cut it and eat it properly with a knife and fork. Vivid in my mind is also G and Sons — everything was available there — and the toys we’d purchase each chol hamoed at Linick’s; the shop was already there back then.

when I figured it all out. I mean, seriously, what’s the point of all those magazine articles sharing tips on frugal buying? It’s a no-brainer!
Well. Today I am no longer 25, and the magazines are still printing those articles. Apparently, The Problem has not yet been resolved, even though we can all chant the usual tips in our sleep: Buy end-of-season (seriously? Your teen will wear this year’s style next year?). Take advantage of major sales (wow, I never thought of that!). Check the clearance aisle first (another Einstein moment!). Be prepared with a list, grab the sales, never buy something just because it’s on sale, compare prices, stack coupons… How about admitting that if these ideas work for us, then we’re doing them already, and if they don’t — well, they won’t suddenly begin accomplishing any new magic now? Let’s graduate to something a little more sophisticated than that. The first thing to keep in mind is that there is nothing that will really work for everyone. It’s nice to keep touting frugality as a virtue, but let’s face it: For some of us, that cheap find from China is only going to take up precious space in the drawer, leaving our wallet $15 skinnier on top of the money we will spend on the better brand. So assuming that the naturally frugal do already have it all figured out, here are a few things that may work for the rest of us.
Snagging those sales: Nice try, but most of us know the equation. While it’s true that waiting just a bit longer can make that coveted dress 70% cheaper, it also usually means that by then, most sizes will be gone. One idea is to do a bit of both: Buy one good item at full price so that you have something to start with, and then wait for the sales to do the rest of your shopping. This plan is not perfect, but it’s better than thinking that you need your entire winter wardrobe in time for Rosh Hashanah. As for smash-and-grab sales, that’s so personal; I’m not even going to

For those of you who do want the quick reminder, here’s a list of the most important no-nos: • Do NOT shop randomly. Know what you need before you leave the house, and stick to your list! • Do NOT buy an item just because it comes with a gift… that you likely don’t need (and even more likely are actually paying for). • Do NOT assume something is on sale just because it says it is. • Do NOT buy something you’re not crazy over just because it’s cheap. You know you’re not going to use it. • Do NOT go to the store hungry. (Yep, I mean it.) • Do NOT buy half an outfit with the intention of finding the perfect match for it in another store. Trust me, you will never find that second part of the outfit, and it will just end up taking up drawer real estate. • Do NOT get something that will last only as long as the first laundry (because it’s made too cheaply, or because it needs professional ironing, or because it’s white and your kids tend to eat with their fingers). • Do NOT buy three-packs if you only love two of the designs, or if you only need one of them. DO buy threepacks if they’re essentials you are definitely going to need at some point. • Do NOT use a shopping cart. You’re more likely to buy more if you can fill a cart than if you have to schlep the items around the store in your arms. And psychologically, an empty shopping cart alongside other buyers’ full ones shames a buyer into filling it more!

get into that. But to make an educated decision, remember the equation: You definitely pay less money during these community sales, but you do pay in other currencies, such as customer service and return policies (and oxygen).
How to make end-ofseason sales work: Theoretically, shopping end-of-the-season sales for next year is great. I just pulled out a stunning $70 dress that I got for my toddler for only $15 at the end of last winter. But what works for a three-year-old won’t work for a teen. And if those black-and-white sweaters are going to just sit in the closet because, who knows, we’ll be doing neon-colored geometrical shapes by then, you didn’t save money — you wasted money. This is what we did one year: At the end of the summer, my girls got beautiful, brand-name Shabbos dresses for a fraction of their original price. They wore their stunning new dresses for yom tov (that’s saving on an expensive, full-priced winter dress right there), and then we packed them up for the following year. The following summer, we pulled them out again. They were no longer as stylish, but since it was only six months later, it was still good enough to begin the season with — and we knew that we’d wait a bit, and then get them the new season’s wardrobe at lower prices, because we weren’t in a rush. Recently, as my own girls grew, I found that while older girls’ dresses are admittedly more expensive, they are also far more versatile. So now we get to shop during sales season for dresses that are appropriate all year long. A win-win! See? Beautiful math. You’re still buying end-of-season, but you’re using it immediately, while the product is still at its prime. Then, a bit later, you use it as a filler-item, and not as the main element in the wardrobe. (As an aside, end-of-season sales are great opportunities to stock up on baby gifts!)
And here are some great do’s too: • Wait! Sometimes just sleeping on it for a night helps you realize that you really don’t need that extra item on sale, and it’s not even that pretty anyway. • Look at that outfit in the store as if it’s already in your closet. Is it still exciting?
Be creative! Your preschooler doesn’t yet know that she “must” get a new outfit for yom tov. Why not make her happy with a pretty headband and new tights instead, and wait until Chanukah to shop? That’s when the stores fill their shelves with new merchandise, giving you the extra time to allow better deals to come your way. Less pressure and more time generally equal wiser choices! Headbands can be helpful in other ways, too. Ever noticed how almost anything can be completely transformed with a fabulous headband or adorable socks? Try getting a simple outfit and then dressing it up with a substantial hair accessory. Done right, your little girl will look like a million dollars with a much smaller investment on your part.
Be daring! Okay, this is almost scary to write. I, for one, am not one of those innovative people. (You know, the ones who happily use tile stickers and craft their own hammocks out of fallen tree branches.) I don’t want my dress to look like I pieced it all together, even if the idea does sound better on the pages of a magazine. However. Take a look at a dress you really, really like. What creates that wow effect? Most of the time the base is a plain dress, but there’s that really cool pocket or sleeves bunched up just so, or there’s that fur trimming, fun belt or row of buttons… You get the picture. And if Ying Yeu Hong could sew that piece on, so can you. You can get the most stunning results by taking a design you love and applying it to an otherwise plain dress. You’ll find yourself saving lots of money while creating the same effect! (A note of caution, though: There is no replacement for good-quality fabrics and sewing. So even when you get that base dress, get it from a reputable company. The only way to wear something that looks high-quality and sits well is if it actually does!)
• This is such a no-brainer that most of us always forget it: Look through your closets before heading out to shop! How many times did you spend on an entire new wardrobe only to discover that you already bought your boys extra T-shirts last year? • Follow your favorite stores’ markdown days. (Hint: In many stores it will be Tuesdays.) • For the very tiny super-organized minority among us: Take note of the styles and colors that look best on yourself or your kids. This may save you some decision-making in the stores. (However, don’t do what I did. I finally have a baby with red hair — and every single item in his wardrobe is black.) • Once in the store, close your eyes until you get to the back. The essentials are always there, forcing you to walk through endless and aggressive marketing in between. • Finished shopping? Now look through your closets again. Spend some time playing around with different combinations of items you already have. You may be able to put together even more outfits than you thought!

Tznius is beautiful! We’ve all had to do it — add that extra piece of fabric to the bottom of a dress to make it long enough to be truly tznius’dig. But sometimes adding the same color will make the piece just look like a patch. (Which is not bad, by the way — we are proud of what we just did!) In those cases, there are some tricks: Don’t add a gray or black piece to that already-gray dress; find a different color or design or fabric for a completely new look. Or cut the dress’s hem way higher and start the new piece from there. My personal favorite is giving that girls’ dress to the seamstress, having her cut the hem asymmetrically, running up one side, and then adding a piece of fun fabric. Be creative, and you can turn an annoying patch into that wow factor that will turn the dress around!

These are great… if you do them at home. Once you are out in the streets, most of the time you will not save much — definitely not enough to justify hours and hours of running from one store to the next. Instead, utilize this prudent approach in two ways that will serve you, rather than having you serving them (always a good idea in general): One, compare prices from the comfort of your own home, and two, compare general prices rather than prices on individual items. Most of the time, the same stores you are already fa-
miliar with as better-priced will carry items for less money across the board.
Finally… make it fun! Shopping doesn’t have to be traumatic. (Okay, it doesn’t have to be only traumatic.) It’s okay to pamper yourself with one higher-end piece if you can, as long as you decide on it in advance and do not allow yourself to fall prey to bad decisions once out in the stores. It’s kind of like that cheat on a good diet — you can have it, but it needs to be planned. And speaking of planning, tell your kids in advance what you are going to buy — including the expected price range (if age-appropriate), style, and anything else your kids need to hear beforehand — and save yourself maddening negotiations next to suddenlyvery-very-busy shoppers. Also, turn shopping into a game — for your kids and for yourself. Who can find socks for under $3? Hey, let’s see if we can find pants for Chezky within fifteen minutes! Who’s going to be the first to find a pair of blue shoes? And even if you won’t be buying those shoes, you will be keeping the kids occupied, making them part of the experience instead of the perpetually cranky tag-alongs. You’ll also be teaching them to feel proud when they find the “right” choice instead of coveting the easy and expensive. Here’s to happy, smart and somewhat frugal shopping!

Kids in the Cart? Cleaning the house while the kids are growing is like shoveling snow while it’s still snowing. Some people would say the same for shopping; after all, kids grow fast and styles change even faster. Either way, it doesn’t seem like we can get away with avoiding this task — and if we’re doing it anyway, why not hear from experts, almost-experts and non-experts to see what works for them?
When it comes to grocery shopping, I stick to my belief that even if I book the most expensive babysitter to supervise my kids and linger in the store for hours on end, I would still get away more cheaply than if I were to take my kids to the store. And, indeed, until they no longer find it fun to spread their arms out wide and walk through two racks crammed with clothes to bring everything to the floor with them, sorry, my sheifelach, but at home you get to stay. Echoing my sentiments, Mindy says, “No, I don’t shop with my kids because I was nearly kicked out of a store when I did. Can you blame the store owner? I’m a mother of three little boys.” Apparently, though, not everyone has such exceptional children. Leah would’ve loved to shop without her children, but the impossible return policies where she lives make that, well, impossible. “I like them around when I shop,” says Leah, “so I
The opinion “If the kids are dressed and the clothing fits, why bother with the whole military headache?” is quite common. can make sure everything fits well before buying.” But she sometimes goes first to scout out the stores on her own. “I shop all by myself,” shares Libby, “or with my sister who shares my taste in clothing. Going with someone whose taste is not a reflection of my own is sometimes as bad as taking along a screaming toddler.” Sarah, whose children are made of different dough, enjoys taking her entourage of six on shopping expeditions. “My kids are pretty well-behaved in the stores, so if they’re home from school at a convenient shopping time, I gladly take them along.” Still, I am not alone in my quest to keep kids home. In my informal poll, the majority said that they keep kids home, but take them along occasionally as a treat or to avoid the schlep of a return.
Matching the Masses — or Not! Organization is the new rage. And if our closets are stocked with uniformly sized bins, to many, it’s a given that their kids, too, should be a reflection of said organization. But for some with a row of girls or boys, it would be a colossal waste of money to buy a completely new wardrobe for each child each season. “My compromise is one matching Shabbos set and one to two matching weekday outfits per season,” reasons Sarah confidently. “What I often do is pass down a set and then get a new coordinating outfit for my oldest child. This way, I get even more matching sets for the price of one outfit.” Many, however, deem matching the kids a superficial activity. The opinion “If the kids are dressed and the clothing fits, why bother with the whole military headache?” is quite common. But Chava feels differently. “I have always stood firm that my main reason for dressing my kids in matching clothes is personal pleasure,” she says. “And the proof is my kids’ matching sets of pjs and robes intended just for the home. COVID-19 proved this more than ever, and actually vindicated my ‘indulgence.’ Although we didn’t venture outdoors, my kids were dressed in matching

clothing every single day. It was therapeutic and my personal good-feeling treat.” With three boys and one little princess, as much as Miriam loves cute clothes, she doesn’t obsess over them. “My kids always match, but some things they wear for a second season, and I’m perfectly okay with that. The fact that they match has nothing to do with pressure; it’s just so much easier to keep track of what they have. I will admit that it’s cuter, too.”
Stretching the Dollar Being proactive by shopping at end-of-season sales whenever possible is a great way to save money. Personally, I was never too successful on such shopping expeditions because it usually involves buying things unnecessarily, or finding the clothes a bit too big or a bit too small when the kids actually get to wear them. Is it the reverberations of the “bilig iz teier — cheap winds up being costly” that I was raised on? Perhaps. But what doesn’t work for me works very well for others. A savvy shopper, Libby takes advantage of end-ofseason sales at expensive stores when they go at four for one. She also enjoys buying cheap and accessorizing with trendy items like shells, socks, headbands and jewelry.

“So, yeah, the accessorizing costs triple as much as the actual garment. But the 75% markdowns on the receipts still provide immense pleasure,” she says. Obviously, expenses only grow along with the size of the family. Leah, a mother of thirteen, works systematically. “Do we officially buy something new for every child every season? No. But unofficially, it does work out that growing children will need something new every season. And even when I can pass clothes down and the kids have plenty from their older siblings, I value individuality and allow every child to get at least one new thing.” As in every family, Leah admits that there are stark differences between her self-declared fifteen-year-old princess and her never-needs-anything seventeen-year-old daughter, and she uses her intuition regarding how much, how often. Sarah, who is bothered by the thought of women struggling with parnassah spending a fortune on entire new wardrobes each season, shares tips on stretching the dollar. “I’m totally okay with hand-medowns, as long as they’re in good condition and up to date. Also, I’m an amateur seamstress so I do the easy alterations, such as hems and lengthening dresses, myself. Otherwise I

give it to a professional seamstress.” Grateful to be the recipient in a hand-me-down shidduch, Chava animatedly talks about the unexpected chain of events. “At one point, my sister put me in touch with a woman who has the same family size and pattern of boys and girls as myself. The setup is amazing! Unbelievably, we haven’t turned back. And surprise, surprise! Since we’ve gotten to know each other, both of our families were blessed with new additions in the same order, as in, we both had a boy next and then a girl. And so the tradition continues!”
Storage Come the end of a season, and parting with the select few clothes that are not threadbare yet is a struggle. How do we know what should be put away for the coming year? It’s no secret that storing certain clothes may provide that momentary thrill (wow! It lasted through an entire season, and maybe more!), but a square meter of storage space can be prime real estate... For starters, if you want to store compactly, invest in vacuum bags. They literally take up half the space! Many people are obsessed with them. (As a frequent flyer, space is always a
commodity. On the lookout for tips on how to maximize luggage space, I mastered DIY vacuum bags: Stuff a garbage bag with anything that will shrink when vacuum packed. Knot the bag, but leave a small opening, just large enough for the nozzle of a vacuum cleaner. Insert the nozzle and suck. Now quickly, before any air enters, tie the bag closed.) Second, look for storage containers that suit your style, budget and space arrangements. Although plastic containers are the most popular storage options, some stay far from plastic when it comes to storing clothing. Like wine that improves with age, the unsightly yellow stains on clothing also intensify over time, and many blame the plastic containers. The stains may be invisible when you pack up your clothing, and the next year, poof! They’re prominently there. That’s why Leah stores clothes only in cardboard boxes. “If a stain wasn’t washed properly and the piece of clothing is stored in plastic, the stain becomes yellow from the chemicals of the plastic breathing onto it during storage time. And everyone knows those stains are virtually impossible to remove.” Bruchy, who I am quite confident will opt to learn professional home organizing once her little ones get a bit older, offers a plethora of ideas — and is another cardboard box fan! “I organize the stuff according to size and season and clearly label each cardboard box I store them in.” For girls’ stuff, Bruchy uses pink labels, and for boys’ stuff she uses blue. For non–gender specific items, she uses a neutral-colored label. Socks usually last through several seasons, can often be used for boys and girls interchangeably, are quite costly to replace, and take up minimal space. These are something worth putting away. Socks of a very specific color that were matched to an outfit should be stored together with the outfit. This way, if you end up passing it on, the recipient gets a complete gift, down to the last detail.

One colony serves as an exemplar of Catskills history To explore the history of Route 17 would require a column (or perhaps an entire book) of its own. The nearly 400-mile state highway along with its many alternate routes, suffixes and added sections have directly helped shape the Borscht Belt of the last century as well as the Catskills of today. For this final installment of our Catskills bungalow colony column, we will examine how the evolution and expansion of Route 17 altered one particular area and eventually led to the popular Lipkowitz Bungalows colony we know today.
HISTORY Nathan and Molly Lipkowitz were Jewish immigrants from Russia who moved out of New York City in 1920 and purchased an egg farm upstate in Westbrookville, New York. In 1940, the family came across a 100-acre farm available for sale in Ferndale on what was then Route 17. The Lipkowitzes moved their business to this more prominent location and would frequently travel to New York City, where they’d sell their eggs. The property also had a small building with rooms available for visitors, which served as a little summer vacation spot for city residents. As we’ve mentioned in earlier installments of this column, it was common in those days for Sullivan County farms to also function as small-scale motels or tourist houses. The many egg farms of the day, mostly owned by Jews, were

no exception. During World War II, the government rationed gasoline and it was no longer possible for the Lipkowitzes to drive their old gas-guzzling truck into the city. This meant that it was time to turn their focus toward raising cows and producing milk, which could be sold to local creameries. At the same time, the Lipkowitzes had two handy sons, George and Leo, who got to work on expanding the hospitality component of their business. They built a number of single and duplex bungalows that were made available for rent each summer. The bungalow colony was relatively advanced, with bungalows having their own

electric refrigerators instead of ice boxes. That being said, it was still a farm, and the summer activities available for the children of families vacationing there largely consisted of lending a hand with the farm chores. Arthur Kirsch, then a young student at Torah V’Daas, fondly recalls how the children would chase the cows into the barn, help with feeding the animals, and sit on little stools as they participated in milking the cows. The Kirsch family was one of the few frum families at Lipkowitz, and they would go up the road to the Gross American House hotel (today the Skaters World NY rink), which offered glatt kosher food and a minyan for davening. Soon, the Lipkowitzes’ neighbors encouraged George and Leo to allow their cattle to graze on their acreage to keep their properties from getting overgrown, and the brothers began to tend to the neighboring land as well. In all, around 250 acres were part of this farm, centrally located on what was then the main artery for Catskills travel. The area at the time was rife with antiSemitism, and a neighboring establishment even displayed a “No dogs, no Jews” sign at the front of their business. Yet the Lipkowitzes always had buyers for their product, including the neighboring dairy farm and creamery named Carrland’s Dairy. Leo Lipkowitz eventually became the manager of that business, and at some point Carrland’s became a provider of cholov Yisroel milk. So much for those “No Jews” wishes... In its heyday, the farm featured nearly one hundred cows and thousands of chickens. There was no swimming pool in the colony, but a little lake in the woods behind did the
job instead. The dairy business and bungalow rentals were doing well when New York State came calling in the early 1960s: The state was expanding Route 17, and the new highway was to cut right behind the bungalows, separating them from the farming land behind. There was little for the Lipkowitz family to do besides take the money the government offered, rumored to be around $250,000, a hefty sum at the time. The bungalow colony continued to thrive under the brothers’ management. The facilities were improved, and at some point in the ’80s a pool was built. The place was highly regarded by guests, and there was a lengthy waiting list of those looking to rent bungalows every summer. By 2004, the aging brothers could no longer manage the business, and with their children having moved on to city life, the colony was sold off to two chassidish businessmen.
A LATE START SEES IMMEDIATE RESULTS As far as colonies go, Lipkowitz was among the few who held out under original ownership for so long. The new Lipkowitz, on the hillside overlooking Route 17, did not take long to establish itself as a preferred heimish summer destination, and the bungalows sold out in rapid fashion. Sixteen years later, one would be excused for assuming that the frum Lipkowitz colony has been around for decades. The new owners sold individual units to buyers, most of whom did some renovations to the aging structures. About twenty additional new bungalows were built and sold as well. As time went by, the well-maintained, landscaped colony slowly shed the remnants of its past: The tall barn silo and Lipkowitz sign are no lon-

ger visible from Route 17 behind it, and most of the property is now modestly covered up, no longer in view of Old Route 17 in front of it. Lipkowitz Bungalows is a quintessential chassidish colony with vacationers from Boro Park and Williamsburg who represent a number of kehillos. Those who purchased bungalows sixteen years ago as fathers of little children are today inviting their couples for Shabbos. The developers have since added about a dozen small units perfect for these young families. One thing that Lipkowitz has become especially known for is the extensive list of Chol Hamoed Sukkos festivities provided by colony resident and prominent baal tzedakah R’ Sender Ashkenazi every year. Families come from near and far to enjoy the amusement rides for children, shows for adults, and entertaining simchas beis hasho’eivah. This summer saw a kollel founded in the colony, and along with it, daily weekday minyanim were established for the first time. Home to a couple of prominent Hatzolah members, Lipkowitz is also the Shabbos base for Catskills Hatzolah’s Liberty ambulance. Despite the busy Route 17 situated not too far behind, the calm and relaxed colony atmosphere is a hallmark of Lipkowitz Bungalows and one of main attractions for those who call the colony home every summer.

Leon Kohandbash, FNP, has become the go-to person for the heimishe community for complicated and chronic tick-borne illnesses. Many of his patients even travel to Brooklyn from Rockland and Orange counties to avail themselves of his expertise. One of his patients was “Shuey” in our article, who is now, baruch Hashem, on the mend. This highly acclaimed family practitioner was kind enough to give of his time to share his knowledge with our readers. How prevalent is Rocky Mountain spotted fever in the New York area? Is it becoming more common? The numbers the CDC gave us showed that there were 495 diagnoses of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in America in the year 2000, a number that rose to over 7,000 cases last year. But this data isn’t very accurate. I believe that there are many more cases that have gone undiagnosed, either because the patient didn’t go to the doctor when confronted with symptoms, or because the examining physician didn’t do the correct testing. How many patients with Rocky Mountain spotted fever do you typically see per season? I see almost 20 patients per day who are diagnosed with any one of the many tick-borne illnesses, not just Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

Lyme disease seems to be the most common, but there are quite a few tick-borne illnesses that are seen in New York State. It is possible for a single tick to transmit more than one type of infectious disease, so I test for all of the infections that are commonly found in our area. I don’t really see acutely affected patients, as they are typically from upstate and do testing there. These patients usually get correctly diagnosed because the severity of their symptoms leads to blood testing. However, even when the diagnosis is correct, many doctors often prescribe a very mild treatment that doesn’t fully cure the illness. Many of those patients end up coming to me for correct treatment. Then there are the patients whom physicians have difficulty diagnosing. Take, for instance, a young person who has been previously healthy and begins to have muscle pains, headaches and extreme fatigue. They become chronically ill, with no known cause. These patients will often
be sent to me, and many times testing will indicate that they have a tick-borne illness. Is there any specific symptom that seems to indicate Rocky Mountain spotted fever? Yes. People need to be aware that the most common symptoms are fever, vomiting, headache and muscle pain. Many people believe they’ve come down with the flu. If someone experiences flu-like symptoms during the summer, then that is a significant indication of a tick-borne infection; the flu isn’t typically contracted during the summer, but ticks are very active. The classic symptom of Rocky Mountain spotted fever is, of course, the spotted rash — but 20% to 50% of people don’t even develop the symptom. And when they do, it appears five or six days after the fever begins, at which point they are already very ill. Treatment should not be dependent upon appearance of the rash. In what way do your treatment methods differ from other doctors’ methods? The patients who come to me don’t have fever; they’re the chronic patients who’ve been suffering with head and body aches, fatigue, and other symptoms for a long time. These patients need longer-term treatments than are routinely prescribed. Some of the patients have even done the shorter forms of treatments — three or four weeks of antibiotics — but later relapsed, as the treatment wasn’t fully effective. It’s important to understand the nature of rickettsia rickettsii, the bacteria that causes Rocky Mountain spotted fever. When an infected tick bites someone, bacteria is injected directly into the bloodstream, where it invades and enters the host’s cells, hides out and multiplies. Not all bacteria do this; some can’t live inside of cells. The bacteria also create what’s called a biofilm, like a protective shell, to prevent the medication from doing its job. It’s very difficult to kill off r. rickettsii, and to do so, we have to be able to penetrate the biofilm to kill the bacteria within their hiding spots. My method is to treat the patient using two, sometimes three, antibiotics over the course of several months. The now-famous hydroxychloroquine, as well as grapefruit seed extract, have also proven helpful in killing the bacteria. We change medications periodically, because over the course of time, the effectiveness of the medications declines. Because such strong antibiotics are used for an extended period of time, I put my patients on several complementary vitamins and probiotics. Part of the treatment includes using “biofilmbusting drugs” to break down the biofilm, giving us access to the
bacteria. Stevia, the sugar alternative, as well as serrapeptase and monolaurin, helps break down the biofilm. After several months of treatments with the stronger drugs, the patient will be put on more natural, plant-based treatments. Can a patient who has gone undiagnosed for an extended period of time fully heal, or are lingering medical issues common even after treatment? The majority of patients don’t need to return after completing a full treatment, though there will be some relapses. Is there a message you wish to give over to medical professionals in terms of what to be vigilant about regarding tick-borne diseases? I check the patient’s Immunoglobulin G when ordering blood tests. The CDC only recommends paying attention to IgM, which indicates an active infection. The IgG indicates a past infection or a chronic infection. When a patient has IgG antibodies and they are presenting with chronic symptoms, this shows me that we need to treat the infection aggressively. When the treatment is shorter, at only three or four weeks long, around 50% of the patients relapse, and then future treatments have to be even more aggressive. Longer protocols together with supplements provide a more effective treatment. Is there a message you’d like to share with people who hopefully won’t need your expertise? There are many people who go upstate for the summer, and of course, many who live upstate year-round. They have to make sure to use preventative measures. These can be sprays that discourage ticks from attaching themselves to a person, such as DEET-based sprays, or permethrin, which actually kills ticks. These can be sprayed on clothes and shoes. Checking the skin is also very important. Every evening, after coming in from outside, the full body should be inspected, and the person should shower. Lawn care is also very important. Keep grass cut short and leaves raked. And make barriers to reduce the presence of deer around your home or bungalow. Deer are perfect hosts for ticks, so don’t leave anything around that will invite them in. There are also certain pesticides that can be sprayed once a season on the lawn that kill ticks and reduce the chance of infection by up to 75%. WALKWAY OVER N O S D U H THE This week we take you over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, farther upstate than the heimish area in the Catskills, to enjoy a beautiful outing. If you’d like to plan a scenic day trip for hiking, biking, picnicking or just a serene stroll, and you’re willing to travel in excess of an hour from your bungalow colony for that pleasure, the Walkway Over the Hudson is something special to try. Whether you’d opt for a walk or to traverse the span by bike, the experience is enjoyable and beautiful. At 212 feet high and 1.28 miles long, the Walkway Over the Hudson was until recently the longest elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. With benches at each of the bridge’s three scenic overlooks and picnic tables at both bridge approaches, you can go and stay for awhile. If you would like to continue beyond the Walkway, there are biking trails extending from the bridge on either side — the Dutchess Rail Trail on the Poughkeepsie side and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail at the Highland side. There are also beautiful parks on either end, which are described below. The 21-story elevator, which normally operates between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., is currently closed. More than 200 feet tall, it usually connects the Poughkeepsie waterfront to the Walkway. Guided tours of the Walkway are also available by appointment between April and October.

Doing Their Part The Plastic Plague So what’s so terrible about plastic bags? A lot, environmentalists say. Referred to as “urban tumbleweeds” for their light weight and aerodynamics, they get picked up by the wind from the trash, trucks and landfills, and get blown down streets, finding permanent residence entangled in tree branches, clogging drains and polluting the ocean. All across the world, animals from land, sea and air — including cows, turtles, whales and endangered desert animals — ingest these bags, which severely damage their digestive tracts, causing many of them to die from illness or strangulation. Recycling of the bags is complicated too, since they are so thin that they clog up sorting machines. Are paper bags better for the environment? Not really. They have their own problems, among them low reusage rate, nondurability and high solid waste volume, so that doesn’t necessarily pose the solution.

Way before the words “plastic bag ban” became a rallying cry in the state of New York, many companies banned single-use bags from their establishments, not wanting to contribute to the rising plastic bag pollution problem. One of the innovators of the anti-plastic bag movement, IKEA, enacted green policies still back in 2008. The options for carrying home purchases were either to purchase a reusable IKEA blue bag for 59 cents, use one’s own reusable bag, or purchase single-use bags for five cents apiece, with the proceeds going to restoring forests and helping reduce carbon dioxide emissions. In 2018, they took environmental concerns a step further, announcing that they would phase out all single-use plastic products from their stores and restaurants. Included in that are plastic straws, plates, cups, and freezer and bin bags. (Plastic-coated paper cups and plates will be phased out when a feasible alternative will be found.) Adidas removed all plastic shopping bags in 2016 from its 14,000 branded stores across the world, a move that was estimated to eliminate the usage of about 70 million bags per year. To Costco shoppers, bagless shopping is nothing new. Like other wholesale companies such as Sam’s Club and BJ’s, they sell their goods directly out of the manufacturer boxes and then reuse those same recyclable boxes at the register by offering them to members in lieu of shopping bags. And the movement is far from stagnant. Whole Foods jumped on the bandwagon, as did the largest U.S. grocery chain, Krogers, who announced that they will phase out shopping bag usage by 2025.

Breaking the Bag Record The world record for the largest paper shopping bag is held by Jon Marling and the Paper Bag Co. in the U.K. At 73 feet long, 50 feet wide, and tall enough for the kids to stand in, the bag was an accurate scale replica of a normal-sized paper bag, complete with twine handles.
Collectible Bags If you have a bag from a popular now-defunct store lying around, or a specialty version of an existing one chances are that Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum might want to purchase it from you for their shopping bag collection. One of the museum’s eleven bag categories is devoted exclusively to Bloomingdale’s, which created shopping bags for 27 country promotions between 1961 and 1991. (Their iconic The Big, Medium and Little Brown Bags are a different story of genius marketing.) Acquiring the entire Bloomie series is a popular goal among bag collectors. The most collectible of the Bloomingdale bags is the last promotion in the abovementioned series, featuring the colors of the Italian flag and the words “In Pizza We Trust,” which is said to have been pulled at the request of the Italian government. The most expensive collectible bag to date is a soup can bag Andy Warhol designed for the American Supermarket. At Sotheby’s Contemporary Prints auction, a 1966 bag (with marks from magic marker!) was sold for $3,737, while a slightly soiled 1964 bag was hammered down at a whopping $4,312.
An attempt at snagging a place in the world records took place in Wilmington, Delaware, where concerned students and environmentalists rolled the world’s largest plastic bag ball, which was composed of more than 50,000 bags to bring awareness to plastic pollution.
The world record for the longest chain of plastic bags, consisting of 40,174 plastic bags and 9.56 miles long, was created by pupils in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.
This unique triangular bag is also highly collectible.
