Angel Hair Pasta, Broken Into 3, Cooked And Drained 1 Onion, Diced 1/4 Cup Oil 1 Red Pepper, Diced 1 Yellow Pepper, Diced 1 Green Pepper, Diced 8 Oz. Can Sliced Mushrooms, Drained 1 Tbsp. Soy Sauce 1 Tbsp. Onion Soup Mix Salt And Pepper Black And White Sesame Seeds
Sauté onion in oil until translucent. Add rest of ingredients, except spaghetti, and continue sautéing for 30 minutes or until vegetables are soft. Combine vegetables with pasta. Add salt and pepper to taste. Sprinkle with black and white sesame seeds. Place skewered salmon cubes atop lo mein pasta. Serve warm.

MORE HOOPLA OVER HOOPS (Re: Sukkah Stunner, Issue 51) I was blown away by the stunning sukkah art idea you featured. It’s simple and inexpensive to put together — and the results are so attractive. Hoops are also beautiful for hanging sukkah art. One year, I decorated sewing hoops with some well-placed greenery and branches, hung a pretty artificial bird from each rim, tied the hoop to the schach with a single piece of ribbon, and the birds merrily swung overhead all Sukkos, prettily framed by the hoops. (Re: The Meats on Your Menu, Issue 03) The past Sukkos, I made the Club Steak Tower featured in your yom tov food section. My family really enjoyed it, and I plan to make it again this year. In the recipe, there’s a note that it freezes very well. May I inquire how to reheat it? Since the first nights of yom tov are all Leil Shabbos, my only option is putting it into my oven set at 200 degrees, which means it will sit there for a few hours before we get to eat that course. The second night would mean less time in the same 200-degree oven because we can only start doing melachos right before the men come home. If the author has any suggestions, I’d really appreciate it! CONSTRUCTIVE APPROACH Stepping into the world of the beis haknesses, the very first halacha we encounter is that of the creation of the physical beis knesses itself. The Rambam rules[1] that in any locale where ten Jewish men reside, they are obligated to build a home for kedusha, a designated place where they will gather for tefillah. So strong is this imperative that, under the proper conditions, a mandatory tax can be imposed to compel all residents to contribute the necessary funding for the attainment of a shul. Evidently, the beis haknesses is a most basic necessity and central component in any Yiddishe neighborhood. How do we understand this? First, it is important to understand that there are two intertwined, yet very different, components to the creation of the beis haknesses. The first is that of practicality. We can talk theory, and many people will offer to host, and some spaces will be available on some days, if not most‌ But for a minyan to last and grow with stability, and for those coming there to be able to daven with presence and peace of mind, a full-time dedicated space is required. In line with this concept, the mandate of communal obligation is not limited to the building alone, but includes all the items necessary for the beis haknesses to thrive as a place of kedusha. This includes the purchase of a Sefer Torah, siddurim, and all basic seforim,[2] which are seen as necessary in creating an environment for learning and davening. There is, however, a second component to this obligation to construct a beis hak-
nesses. To understand this, it is necessary to take a step back and determine what exactly a beis haknesses is. A simple definition would be a room or location dedicated to the use of tefillah. This, however, is only a partial definition. Is every place of tefillah automatically a full-fledged beis haknesses? Is every backyard or porch that hosted a minyan over the past few months now imbued with the kedusha of a beis haknesses? If yes, we would be in quite a bind. A beis haknesses is not only a matter of kedusha but also of halachic status. There are halachos governing its use and the appropriate conduct and speech within a beis haknesses. There are severe limitations on the sale of a beis haknesses. Are all these laws now in force, governing our yards and porches? The answer is that tefillah alone can take place anywhere, be it a yard, an office, or an airport. A beis haknesses, however, requires more — namely, a specific decision to create an environment of kedusha. It’s a step that precedes any tefillos. It’s a decision to dedicate this place as a home for the Shechinah. We’re not merely allocating space; we’re creating miniature versions of the Beis Hamikdash. By having such a place of kedushah, our tefillos receive an enormous boost, as we’re talking directly to Hakadosh Baruch Hu — after all, this is now His home. He’s here, and will always be here listening to us, just as in the times of the Beis Hamikdash. To put this into perspective: There are families that have get-togethers in a park or at some other convenient location every once in a while. Some get together quite often. Yet even if the entire family would meet up consistently,

If yes, we would be in quite a bind. on a regular basis, gathering each time in the exact same park, the park would nonetheless remain nothing more than a gathering place, not a home. In contradistinction, a home is a home even when a family is on vacation. A home is built on its being the place of a specific family, but the concept runs deeper and greater than whether anybody is there at a given moment. The poskim tell us that this feature, the enshrinement of the space as a home for Hakadosh Baruch Hu, is a core element of the obligation to build a beis haknesses in every community. In other words, were a community to set aside a dedicated room or building for the exclusive purpose of tefillah yet choose to refrain from imbuing it with kedushas beis haknesses, they will have not fulfilled their obligation. Satisfying the practical element alone is insufficient.
The community needs a mikdash me’at, a veritable Mikdash, at its center.[3] This concept has been a basic feature of our lives since we first came into existence on the national level. We know that the land of Klal Yisroel, first in the desert and then in Eretz Yisroel, is divided into three categories. We have a central Machaneh Kehunah, surrounded by a Machaneh Leviyah, and finally the Machaneh Yisroel. The innermost region was the most sanctified, home of the Mishkan or Mikdash. The outermost region was, relatively speaking, the most mundane. This was where the vast majority of Yidden lived. With this designed setup, we were being instructed that wherever we may live, our common denominator is our core, the home of kedusha as the nucleus of our community. In fact, upon entering Eretz Yisroel,
IN SUMMATION: 1) Any community of ten or more Jewish men is obligated to have a designated space for tefillah. In addition, they are obligated to purchase all items necessary for proper functionality, including a Sefer Torah and all basic seforim. 2) The space must be designated with kedushas beis haknesses. Merely setting aside an unsanctified location does not fulfill this obligation. (At a later point, we will, b’ezras Hashem, discuss the concept of limiting the kedusha somewhat in order to allow greater ease of use.)

it would take fourteen years until the land was fully conquered and divided for allocation. Chazal tell us that for the duration of these fourteen years, the land did not receive the special status of Machaneh Yisroel. Yes, the Mishkan was up and running during these years; there was, in fact, a functioning Machaneh Kehunah and Machaneh Leviyah. But the third layer, the one that nearly all of Klal Yisroel called home, had not yet attained its special status. Why so? As Rashi tells us, due to the ongoing battles and turmoil in settlement, the masses lacked in one critical criterion: that of “Saviv laMishkan yachanu — the system of having their homes grouped around a central Mishkan.[4] Only when they were fully settled with that structure in place would all the homes of Klal Yisroel take on the elevated status of Machaneh Yisroel. To apply this to our times: We are a nation of great variety. We excel in different ways. We live in diverse localities. We are occupied with very many professions. Not everyone remains squarely in the Machaneh Kehunah, as rabbanim and mechanchim do. We have a Machaneh Yisroel full of lawyers, doctors, graphic designers, grocers, accountants and individuals in countless other professions. Each has a role in Klal Yisroel. Each has a spot from where they alone can contribute to Klal Yisroel. There is but one condition. The value each person brings is when the central focus of his life, the most prominent fixture, is avodas Hashem. MTA to Issue $50 Fines to Maskless Riders
White House Ends Airport Screening of International Passengers
Be prepared to either mask up or pay up if you plan on riding Metro-North, New York City subways or buses, or the Long Island Railroad, after a new executive order issued by Governor Andrew Cuomo aimed at ensuring safer commutes. A survey done by the Metropolitan Transit Authority showed that more than 90% of its customers are wearing
Citing the limited effectiveness of its protocols for identifying international travelers infected with the coronavirus, as of September 14, the White House discontinued its policy of of screening passengers from high-risk countries upon arrival at fifteen major airports. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a statement last week saying that it was taking a new approach to preventing overseas travelers from spreading COVID-19 within the United States. In addition to educating passengers during both their departures and arrivals, the government will also work with its international partners to develop a testing framework and improve illness response at airports. The new policy affects passengers arriving from most of Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Conde Nast Traveler reported that international passenger screening protocols at American airports are less rigorous than those being done in other countries and that they’ve been spotty, potentially contributing to the recent uptick in COVID-19 rates in the United States. Some 675,000 international passengers have been screened at United States airports, according to CNN, but only fifteen were actually confirmed to have the coronavirus.

At Long Last, Limited Restaurant Openings Okayed In the good news department, indoor dining is set to reopen in New York City. In the bad news department, the list of restrictions is more than a little long. An announcement made by Governor Cuomo last week gave city restaurants the green light to welcome customers back on September 30, subject to 25% capacity limits, mid-
night closures, enhanced air filtration and safety protocols including temperature checks, contact tracing information and mask requirements for all those who aren’t seated at tables, which must be spaced six feet apart. In an effort to ensure compliance, New York City will provide 400 enforcement efforts to work with a State Police Task Force, and patrons will be able to report any violations by calling or texting a dedicated phone line. Restaurant data will be monitored and reassessed on November 1, with capacity limits boosted to 50% or regular occupancy if infection rates remain steady. Mayor Bill de Blasio acknowledged that the city would be taking things slowly in the interests of public safety. “Science will guide our decision-making as we continue to monitor progress and health care indicators over the next three weeks to ensure a safe reopening,” said de Blasio. “This may not look like the indoor dining that we all know and love, but it is progress for restaurant workers and all New Yorkers.” Whether or not this latest announcement will actually save the city’s many floundering eateries remains to be seen, reported Gothamist. “Twenty five percent is way too little and way too late,” said Mark Fox, founder of Fox Lifestyle Hospitality Group, which owns several restaurants. “It’s not going to save the number of restaurants that are already in great financial difficulty.”

End of the Line for Century 21 Add another financial victim to the list of COVID-19 casualties. After nearly sixty years in business, luxury discounter Century 21 has filed for bankruptcy and announced that it was closing all thirteen of its stores. According to CNN Business, Century 21 had been counting on a $175 million payout from its insurance company after being forced to close its stores because of the pandemic, a claim that was ultimately denied. The store had already been bailed out once by insurers after its flagship store near the World Trade Center was destroyed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001. “We now have no viable alternative but to begin the closure of our beloved family business because our insurers, to whom we have paid significant premiums every year for protection against unforeseen circumstances like we are experiencing today, have turned their backs on us at this most critical time,” said Century 21 co-CEO Raymond Gindi.

Recap: Elisheva confides in her father that she’s very suspicious of the “string of coincidences” occurring to her family lately — and that she’s wondering if they are, in fact, not coincidences at all, but someone’s deliberate attempt to help them out. Balking at the thought of being the recipient of handouts, she wants to get to the bottom of it. On their flight back to England, Blumi mentions that she will no longer trust people easily after what had happened to her. Elisheva walked through the rooms, opening and closing doors and drawers. The children would be thrilled when they’d get home from school. They really could use normal beds, dressers and desks — all which were part of the package of furniture that had come with the new apartment. She had been rather taken aback by the generous standards they’d been allotted by the catalog sent to them. It was a catalog from a reputable carpentry firm, and it had been delivered by courier. Tucked into the front cover was a handwritten list of the items they could choose from. They had called the company to place their order, and today, less than two weeks later, the order had arrived. The items were perfect. Beautiful. New. “Mommy?” Riki called to her. She and Devoiry had stayed home to help their mother organize the family’s possessions into the new dressers and closets. “Where should we put the boys’ winter clothes?” She used a knife to slice open one of the taped cartons that had been waiting patiently to be unpacked. Elisheva opened the door at the bot-
tom of one of the dressers, a high-quality, pressed-wood piece in shades of blue and yellow. It had five drawers with navy carshaped knobs, and a shelved cabinet at the bottom. “Here,” she said. “Did you finish in your room?” “Yes.” Riki was quiet for a moment. “Mommy?” “What?” “There’s an empty wall in our room. The one where the old homework desk will go.” “Nu?” Elisheva joined the girls in smoothing the stacks of clothing and reorganizing the piles of corduroy pants. She tackled the sweaters, sorting them by size. “I want to paint that desk mint green, like our new dresser. May I?” “I don’t see why not.” “And do you think we could order a few cubbies to hang over the desk, with the same colors — light wood and mint green? It shouldn’t be expensive — probably around a few hundred shekels.” “It sounds like a cute idea.” “I can do it in Chani and Esty’s room,

too. We’ll buy them a small desk, and we’ll paint it maroon to match their beds and dresser.” “You have the energy to do it all? Then be my guest. I’m sure they will love it,” Elisheva said. Again, something clenched in her heart when she saw her daughter’s eyes light up with joy. She and Eliyahu, with all of their love and goodwill, had never been able to allow themselves to spend “a few hundred shekels” so easily, with hardly any thought. And Riki and all of them knew that now everything had, baruch Hashem, gotten easier — but it was not because of their father or mother, but rather because someone was giving it to them, tzedakah or not, raffle win or not. Whatever it was, it was because someone from the outside was succeeding where she and Eliyahu had failed. For all of their efforts, with Eliyahu’s tea, the work she had taken on, everything — money had still always been a struggle for them. Perhaps she should hang a sign on their new door: “Here lives a couple who could not provide for their children’s needs on their own.” “I don’t understand the problem,” Eliyahu said quizzically later that evening, when the kitchen had emptied and they sat down to a quiet supper. “The children know that the lifestyle we prefer — and always have preferred — is solid but not grandiose. At the same time, they realize that there are things we were not able to do, not because of principle, but because of our limited means. Now that we can do it, we are giving them these things. What can be simpler than that?” “I always tried to make sure that they’re growing up happy…” Elisheva spoke slowly. “Even if there wasn’t much, they should never feel a lack. But… but I don’t know how successful I was. And I’m sad that my children know that now when I have the ability to give

signs that we hung around the neighborhood.” “I think I know exactly how it got to us,” Elisheva said, playing with the edge of the tablecloth. “I mean, not exactly ‘how,’ but at least where it’s from.” “Are you speculating again about the anonymous benefactor?” She smiled and stood up to clear the table. “Yes.” “So as long as we haven’t discovered the guilty party, we have no way of finding out if you are right.” His smile rose from his lips to his eyes. “But in the meantime, we are allowed to lend it out for a mitzvah. I think that the best thing would be to lend it out together with our sefer Torah.” “You mean, to the same shul?” “Yes.” “How is the sefer Torah coming along?” she remembered to ask. “Baruch Hashem. The writing is almost finished, except for the last amud, which will be completed at the hachnasas sefer Torah.” He went to the sink. “And there’s the work of sewing together the panels… But that’s also almost done.” He washed his hands under the stream of water, and droplets splattered all around him. His eyes raced over the pages as the women chatted quietly. “It’s all perfectly fine,” he said, after a few minutes. “The money is coming into the account regularly, right?” His mother nodded. “And what is this?” Blumi asked, pointing to a colorful paper in the pile. “It’s our Halabi community’s newsletter that is published once every few months. My brother sends it to me,” the elderly woman said. “I think there’s a consolation notice there for you, Blumi, isn’t there? Or was it in their last one?” “We got the notice at home, right after I came back from Eretz Yisroel,” Blumi said, recognizing the style of the condolence notice, with its thick black border. “But not the entire newsletter.” Gideon glanced at the thin booklet. “I get it at the office. I think it arrived yesterday; I didn’t have time to really look through it. It’s a union of a few Halabi communities who put out the newsletter, including that new shul of young people that we saw in Yerush-

And look what they write about it!” All at once, she felt flushed. She’d told Gideon to look, but she didn’t hand him the paper; instead she began to rapidly read the column right near the photo. “Really!” she huffed. “Is that so?!” “Is what so?” her mother-in-law inquired. Gideon put down the bottle of soda without capping it. “What are you reading there?” “This!” She was still gripping the newsletter, and looked furious. Then she shook her head lightly and began to read aloud. “‘Aside from the sefer Torah, a silver yad will also be donated. It had been mysteriously given to the donor family, and when a rav was asked about it, the ruling was that the yad could be used by a shul. We are looking forward to receiving the yad together with the sefer Torah.’ Mysteriously given, indeed! Really now! Theft in broad daylight is more like it!” She finally gave the newsletter over to Gideon and his mother. His mother wasn’t familiar with the yad that looked back at them from the color photo, but Gideon certainly was. Although Blumi had only taken it out of her parents’ hallway closet once to show it to him, its small size and the way it was set with stones were clear in his memory. He wasn’t the type to forget something like that. “Are you sure it’s the same one?” he asked, just to be sure. “Absolutely positive,” she declared. “Now get me the phone number of someone there in the shul so I can talk to them.” She actually wanted to say, “So I can give them a piece of my mind,” but restrained herself mightily from doing so. Trump Administration Chalks Up Another Mideast Success THE PULSE: President Trump announced that the Persian
Gulf kingdom of Bahrain would establish full diplomatic relations with Israel. This diplomatic success follows on the heels of the historic peace deal between the United Arab Emirates and Israel that the president helped broker three weeks ago. Bahrain is a longstanding U.S. ally and hosts the U.S. Navy’s central command and fifth fleet. Twentysix years ago, the first Israeli delegation visited Bahrain, and in February 2017, King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa met with visiting Jewish leaders. Once the UAE broke the taboo on normalization with Israel, Bahrain was ready to follow suit. Middle East observers point out that Bahrain would not have entered into an agreement with Israel without the

support and blessing of its larger neighbor Saudi Arabia. President Trump and Jared Kushner invested much time cultivating the Saudis and were instrumental in making this agreement a reality. A signing ceremony for the IsraelUAE peace agreement will take place in Washington this week. Bahraini officials will also be in attendance. THE IMPACT: These agreements are reshaping alliances
in the Middle East. Historically the Arab-Israeli conflict, with the focus on the Palestinian issue, has been the central divide. The changing dynamic has reshaped the region based on the Arab-Iranian conflict. The UAE, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia all consider Iran a common foe. They are engaged in proxy battles with Iran in Yemen and other areas in the Middle East. The agreements between Israel and Arab countries are a blow to Palestinians, as it sidelines their cause. It is a boon for Israel, as it receives regional
recognition without first solving the Palestinian issue. For President Trump, the agreements help burnish his foreign policy credentials and strengthen his argument that a fresh non-conventional approach to the Middle East can achieve tangible benefits. Analysts see a strong possibility of other Arab countries, such as Sudan and Oman, following suit and reaching normalization agreements with Israel.
Democrats Criticize Agreement to Sell F-35s and Military Equipment to UAE THE PULSE: Congresswoman Debbie WassermanSchultz penned a scathing op-ed in the Miami Herald criticizing the Trump administration’s willingness to sell F-35 stealth bombers to the UAE. She hailed the normalization of relations between the two countries but argued that it was wrong for the administration to set up a “peace for weapons’’ quid pro quo. She claimed that the Trump administration inadvertently put Israel’s security at risk with its agreement to sell these bombers and other advanced weaponry to the UAE. Her argument is multifaceted. Her first point is that the sale of F-35s to Arab countries erodes Israel’s unrivaled air superiority and that the United States is legally obligated to ensure that Israel’s qualitative military edge (QME) in the Middle East is maintained. A possibility exists that a future UAE government could be hostile to Israel and that Israel would then find itself in an unenviable situation. Her second point is that selling F-35s to Arab countries increases the likelihood that the plane’s designs and components can fall into the wrong hands and be compromised by the intelligence agencies of hostile nations. Her third point is that the sale of weapons to the UAE may increase the demands for advanced weaponry by other regional actors such as Egypt and Jordan, whose governments are U.S. allies but are considerably less stable than the UAE. Lastly, she expressed concern about such weaponry’s oversight in proxy wars waged in Yemen and Libya. Wasserman-Schultz claimed that the deal to sell the F35s blindsided the Israeli defense establishment and was “in violation of longstanding practice, (as) no consultations seem to have occurred between American and Israeli military experts on the impact of such a sale on Israel’s security.” Nine Democratic members of the House of Representatives penned a letter to the administration expressing concern over the bombers’ sale to the UAE. They wrote that “As stalwart supporters of Israel, we will oppose any arms sale that would threaten Israel’s QME, and we will take every opportunity to advocate for Israel’s security.” The letter was signed by Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Max Rose (D-NY), two Democratic representatives who recently sat for an interview for this column. THE IMPACT: President Trump has strong support from
the pro-Israel community due to his Middle East policies.
Wasserman-Schultz’s op-ed is part of the Democratic attempt to undercut that support by highlighting the detrimental aspects of Trump’s diplomatic successes. It is telling that Wasserman-Schultz, whose district includes heavily Jewish areas of Miami-Dade County, published her op-ed in the leading South Florida newspaper of record. Democrats know that a Biden win in Florida would likely be a death knell for Trump’s chances to win the electoral college; they are therefore targeting the large Florida Jewish population with a message that they are the better choice for Israel’s long-term security. Continuing this theme, Joe Biden took to CNN to argue that Trump’s policies on Iran have isolated the United States, emboldened Iran, and brought it closer to a nuclear breakout.
Trump Faces Barrage of Negative Publications THE PULSE: Over the past weeks and months, President
Trump has been the target in a deluge of books and articles that are highly critical of him and his management style. In June, former National National Security Adviser John Bolton published “The Room Where It Happened.” In July, the president’s niece Mary Trump published “Too Much and Never Enough.” In early September, the disgraced former personal attorney for the president, Michael Cohen, published “Disloyal,” and last week, famed Watergate journalist Bob Woodward published “Rage.” The authors of these books are all insiders with personal access to the president, and their portraits were highly negative. Woodward’s book included an interview with the president, where the president admitted to intentionally downplaying the coronavirus’s threat to avoid public panic. Coupled with the release of these books was a series of articles critical of the president. The Atlantic Monthly reported that the president had made disparaging remarks about fallen U.S. service members. President Trump denied that he ever made such comments, but multiple news agencies, including Fox News, corroborated many of the allegations. Additionally, famed Republican election lawyer Ben Ginsburg penned an op-ed highly critical of the president’s attempt to cast doubt on the integrity of mail-in ballots. THE IMPACT: Republican support for the president remains rock-solid. It is unlikely that these books and articles will have an impact on the president’s base. However, these publications draw the president off message by forcing him to spend time defending himself from allegations of wrongdoing instead of getting his preferred campaign themes out to the public. Polling has consistently shown that President Trump needs to play catch-up to pull ahead and win this election. He needs to frame the narrative to his advantage and sell his strengths to the few undecided voters that are still up for grabs. Adverse reporting that grabs national headlines results in campaign days lost and less time left for the president’s campaign to focus on core messaging.

Great Garnishes I am passionate about presenting food beautifully, and that includes food garnishes. While they might seem like decorations tossed on the side of the plate as an afterthought, these enhancements actually play a significant role in the diner’s experience of the food. I choose to present a prettily plated dish for several reasons: We experience food visually before tasting it, and a garnish adds a spot of color for the eyes to feast on before actually tasting the food. This is especially important when serving monochromatic foods. In addition, garnishes enhance the flavor of some dishes. A lemon wedge served with fish not only adds a splash of yellow to the plate, but the diner can use it to flavor the food. Similarly, a mint sprig on top of a fruit dessert lightly infuses the dish with a refreshing flavor. That’s why it’s important to choose garnishes that complement the flavors of the food they are served with. Furthermore, some plates might look empty, even after the food has been arranged. Garnishes can fill in these empty spaces on a plate. A small piece of pale cheesecake in the middle of a large dessert plate appears meager, but decorating the plate with swirls of raspberry or chocolate sauce makes the same portion look more generous. When we add a garnish, the amount of food does not change — but our perception of it does.

Three Rules for Garnishing a Plate: Garnishes should always: • BE FUNCTIONAL. If you can’t eat it, it doesn’t belong on the plate. There are a few exceptions
like skewers and specialty utensils, but these exceptions are few and far between. • ENHANCE THE TASTE OF YOUR DISH. If the garnish doesn’t enhance the flavor of your dish, it
doesn’t belong on the plate. • ADD CONTRASTING COLORS, TEXTURES AND OVERALL INTEREST. If too many components on a
single plate share the same color tone, your plate will look flat. Try to use garnishes with contrasting colors and textures that don’t break the first two rules. I’ve compiled a list of garnishing ideas that are easy to do and really add that “wow!” factor to a dish. Happy garnishing!
Garnishes for food: • Add some spiralized carrots or other veggies (you can buy them ready) to a plate of chicken soup or cream of chicken soup. The results are eye-catching!
• Colorful Terra chips or roasted tri-colored peppers on your meat plate add lots of taste and color.
• Stand a triangular pita chip (you can buy them in a snack bag) atop a scoop of eggs and liver on Shabbos for a magical transformation.
• Add a slice of lemon or lime next to or on a slice of fish. You can also slice an avocado, a lemon or a lime thinly and fan it out in a half-moon shape for added oomph on the fish plate.
• When serving mashed potatoes, place the potatoes in a piping bag fitted with a big star tip. Pipe two big mounds or pipe a narrow line in a looping motion.
• For a baked apple, or another warm dessert: Arrange a cinnamon stick in the center or the side. The added taste and smell are wonderful.
• Use greens to spruce up any meat or fish plate. Small sprigs of fresh parsley add a pop of color when placed across meat or fish. You can arrange fish on a bed of fresh lettuce and shredded cabbage for extra color.
• Edible flowers on a dessert plate are always stunning.
• When serving ice cream or ices, sprinkle some pomegranate arils or blueberries on top, or arrange two cherries — literally the “cherry on top.” • Place a handful of fried onions (you can buy them ready-made) on top of mashed potatoes or steak. Yum! • Place two crisscrossed breadsticks beside any soup plate. Sprinkle some parsley flakes over the soup.
• Add fresh mint leaves, slices of fresh lemon and/or lime to a drink of water. • If you’re serving mushroom soup, add a few slices of mushroom in the center of the dish. Chestnut soup — add a whole chestnut in the center. Vegetable soup — some veggies in the center... This works for any soup you’re serving. • Spiralize vegetables and add them to your meat, fish or appetizer plate. You can spiralize beets for an added pop of color and delicious taste.

Scrumptious Sides Potato kugel. If I read your minds right, most of you conjured up either of these two images after reading the first two words: a Shabbos meal or a yom tov meal. Am I right? After all, potato kugel is synonymous with anything related to yom tov and Shabbos because it’s just that good — and who minds a slice of potato kugel? I’ll take a piece any time! If you’re like me, and you appreciate some new flavors in addition to the traditional, you might just very much like these new, savory and scrumptious side dish recipes to serve on yom tov. They’re easy to make and very delicious and tasty. Potato kugel, time to meet your new friends!

Gnocchi Gnocchi: pronounced with a silent G, O as in open, and CC as in cake: NYO-KEY. (Yes, I wish someone would’ve enlightened me before I embarrassed myself (plenty a time) when ordering this dish; gnocchi is what I order whenever I want to treat myself. As I was brainstorming for side dish ideas, a thought popped into my head: Who wouldn’t love a deliciously easy gnocchi recipe? And so, without further ado, I present to you just that! In the words of all the taste testers: May I have another portion, please?
INGREDIENTS 2 T. olive oil 1 medium onion, chopped 2 boxes mushrooms, chopped 5 cloves garlic, minced (or 6 garlic cubes) 2 heaping tsp. Dijon mustard ⅔ cup dry white wine 2 cups whipping cream (topping) 2 pounds (Chef Zali) uncooked potato gnocchi 2 generous handfuls baby spinach Salt and pepper, to taste Fresh parsley, chopped, to taste DIRECTIONS 1. Add the olive oil to a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the onion and saute for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. It’s okay if it becomes lightly browned. 2. Add the mushrooms and garlic. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for another 5 minutes. 3. Stir in the Dijon mustard and white wine. Let it bubble for a minute or so. 4. Add the cream and gnocchi. Wait until it starts to bubble again, then cover the pan and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook for 3 minutes. 5. Stir in the spinach, cover the pan again, and cook for another 3 minutes. 6. Season with salt and pepper. Taste; gnocchi should be soft. If it’s not, continue to cook for another few minutes. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Egg Rolls With Dipping Sauce Scrumptious and crunchy, these egg rolls are mouthwatering. They can be prepped in advance, and then fried fresh and enjoyed.
INGREDIENTS 1 lb. pastrami ½ cup oil, for frying pastrami 1 T. duck sauce 1 tsp. mustard 1 tsp. garlic powder 1 cup oil, for frying the egg rolls 3 cups coleslaw mix 12 egg roll wrappers DIPPING SAUCE ⅓ cup soy sauce ⅓ cup vinegar 1 T. honey 1–2 tsp. oil Pinch red pepper flakes Duck sauce (optional but recommended) DIRECTIONS 1. Dice the pastrami into small pieces. In a medium pan over medium heat, saute the pastrami in ½ cup oil. When the pastrami is half-cooked, pour the duck sauce, mustard and garlic powder over the meat and stir to coat it evenly. Continue to cook until the pastrami is soft. 2. Lay one egg roll wrapper on your working surface with one corner pointing toward you. Place about ¼ cup pastrami mixture on the bottom third of the egg roll wrapper, then fold the lower corner up over the mixture. Fold the left and right corners in toward the center and roll up the egg roll. Dab a bit of water on the inside of the top corner to help seal the wrapper. 3. Heat 1 cup oil in a large frying pan. Place the egg rolls into the heated oil and fry, flipping occasionally, until they’re golden brown. As each egg roll is ready, remove it from the oil and drain on paper towels or a rack. Serve with dipping sauce.

Colorful Carrots The colors of these carrots are a feast for the eye! Enjoy the different look of these zeese mayeren.
INGREDIENTS 2 lbs. colorful carrots 4 T. olive oil 1 tsp. kosher salt ½ tsp. black pepper 1 orange, to provide 2 T. orange zest 4 T. honey (separated) DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°. 2. Toss the carrots with olive oil, kosher salt and black pepper. 3. Line a tray with parchment paper and spread out the seasoned carrots in a single layer. 4. Zest half the orange over the carrots, then drizzle with 2 tablespoons of honey. 5. Roast for 15–20 minutes, depending on the size of the carrots. Zest the other half of the orange over the carrots, and drizzle the remaining honey on top. 6. Serve immediately.

Quinoa Salad This salad is addictive, even for those who don’t usually enjoy quinoa. Try it first, and thank me later! Note: If you’re preparing this salad before Simchas Torah, omit the almonds.
INGREDIENTS 3 cups butternut or acorn squash, cut into cubes 1 red onion, peeled and diced into 1-inch pieces 2 (24-oz.) bags broccoli florets Olive oil, for seasoning ½ tsp. kosher salt 2 cups quinoa, rinsed and drained 3½ cups water ½ cup sliced almonds ½ bunch flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped MAPLE-DIJON VINAIGRETTE 3 T. olive oil
2 T. maple syrup
2 T. lemon juice
½ tsp. kosher salt
2 T. Dijon mustard DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°, and line two sheet pans with parchment paper. 2. Toss together the squash and onions in one pan and the broccoli in the other. Drizzle the vegetables with olive oil and season with salt. Roast for 30 minutes, until the squash and onions are tender and the broccoli is bright green. 3. Meanwhile, cook the quinoa: In a saucepan, combine the quinoa and water and bring this to a boil. Lower the heat to a simmer until the quinoa is cooked through, about 20 minutes. Drain and set aside to cool slightly. 4. Now prepare the dressing: Whisk together the olive oil, lemon juice, mustard, maple syrup, and salt, until combined. 5. To serve, assemble the quinoa and vegetables in layers across a large serving bowl. Sprinkle the sliced almonds (if using) and parsley across the top. Just before serving, pour the maple-Dijon vinaigrette over the top. Toss until evenly distributed, transfer to plates, and enjoy warm or cold.

This coming year תשפ"אis one of the most rare occurrences. There are fourteen ways in which the yearly Jewish calendar can be set. Seven of them occur in standard years, and the other seven in leap years — fourteen in total, each which has a code in Shulchan Aruch (hilchos rosh chodesh); there is a chart listing of the codes for each year all the way to year 6000. With this code, one can figure out the entire year: exactly which day of the week each yom tov will fall out, when Rosh Chodesh will be, whether it’s a leap year or not, which parsha will be each week, and more. The code for this coming year is זח"א. While what the code represents is beyond the scope of this article, suffice it to say that this is arguably the rarest of all fourteen possibilities. The last time this occurred was 20 years ago, and the time before that was 44 years ago. This means that Shabbos Parshas Mikeitz does not fall on Chanukah, which causes the reading of the haftorah of Parshas Mikeitz. That haftorah is almost never read, since the haftorah of Shabbos Chanukah almost always overrides it — but this year is an exception. If you ever wondered why a haftorah for Mikeitz is printed in our Chumashim since it's never said anyway, the answer is that it's there for this year. Remember the wisdom of Shlomo Hamelech ordering to cut the baby in half in order to determine who the real mother is? That's the story that appears in haftoras Mikeitz, which we haven’t read as the haftorah for twenty years...

עשרה בטבת שחל בערב שבת The only fast that can occur on a Friday is Asarah B'Teves. This fast cannot be pushed off for a later date as other fasts are, since the pasuk refers to Asarah B’Teves as “etzem hayom hazeh,” which Chazal interpret as meaning that this fast must be on the tenth day of Teves, no matter what day of the week it falls out. This causes the rare occurence of fasting until after kiddush, as the fast ends at tzeis hakochavim. This is when everyone will be making an early Shabbos — in the middle of the winter...
שבת זכור שחל בפרשת תרומה In a regular year (not a leap year) Shabbos Parshas Tetzaveh is always Parshas Zachor — except for this year, when it will be Parshas Terumah instead. While this has no practical ramifications, it is nevertheless an extremely rare occurrence.

If Purim every year is not hectic enough, we will now have the rare occurrence of Purim on a Friday — and yes, this is still before the clock is moved forward, so you better be ready to light Shabbos candles at 5:00 p.m., by hook or by crook...
If you ever planned to go to Eretz Yisroel for Purim, this is the year to go. Why? Because Purim in Yerushalayim always falls a day later, on the day we call Shushan Purim. Therefore, when Purim falls on a Friday, in Yerushalayim Purim is on Shabbos. This results in Purim Meshulash — literally meaning "the triple Purim.”
Better start the day at the crack of dawn, in order to pack into this short Friday the reading of the Megillah, sending mishloach manos, eating a Purim seudah, possibly getting a bit drunk as well, plus running around to all the teachers and family... If your head is starting to spin already, you have an option: Purchase a ticket to Eretz Yisroel. If you’re in Yerushalayim, that's a different story, as I will now explain.

What is a “triple Purim”? Just as we have Rosh Hashanah and Sukkos falling on Shabbos this year, where the shofar is not blown and the lulav is not shaken, as the Gemara explains, the same reasoning applies when Purim falls on Shabbos as well, and the Megillah is not read. What happens is that instead of Purim being one day, it ends up being three days! The mitzvos of Purim in such a year is spread across three days: On Friday, the Megillah is read and matanos l’evyonim distributed. On Shabbos, Al Hanissim is said and Vayavo Amalek is read. Then Sunday is when the seudas Purim takes place and mishloach manos are sent. Yerushalayim is clearly the place to be!

ערב פסח שחל בשבת The greatest number still of halachic ramifications involve Erev Pesach on Shabbos. Here are some aspects of Pesach that will be unique this year.

בדיקת חמץ Bedikas chometz cannot be done the night before Pesach as usual since it's Shabbos, so it is done on Thursday night instead.
שריפת חמץ The chometz, obviously, cannot be burned on Erev Pesach, and it must instead be done on Friday morning. But kol chamira is not said and the chometz is not nullified at the burning. Why? While most years there is no chometz to be had after the burning, this year not only is chometz permitted, but one is actually obligated to eat chometz after the chometz is burned. That is so because on Shabbos one must eat some challah both at night and during the day. One may not eat matzah instead, as it is forbidden to eat matzah on Erev Pesach. Exactly how the challah is eaten is a bit complicated...
ערב פסח,שבת בבוקר Shacharis on Shabbos must be davened at the crack of dawn in order to be finished eating the challah before sof zman achilas chometz — the last moment one may eat chometz, which in New York is at 10:00 in the morning. Any leftover chometz must be flushed down the toilet before sof zman bittul chametz at 11:00 a.m., as burning is not possible on Shabbos. Only after that do we say kol chamira and nullify any remaining chometz. Anyone who wishes to eat seudah shelishis after that can eat neither challah nor matzah, and must eat other foods instead.

Over the years, many GATES OF HEAVEN. and prominent rabbanim and Torah figures have taken It’s a few days before Yom Kippur, and this is no ordinary crowd. Thousands of children from dozens of local yeshivos, who are joined via live hookup by countless more around the globe, have gathered to daven on behalf of cholei Yisroel and those in need of yeshuos. The adults in the room ostensibly lead the event, but will all admit that the innocent voices of the yeshivah boys move them to tears. One esteemed rebbe commented on the marble-adorned Bobov shul, “Di shteiner huben mitgeveint — the stones cried along!”
part in the yom tefillah, and each expressed certainty that the unified prayers of so many thousands of Torah-learning tinokos shel beis rabban surely make a tremendous impact in Heaven during these auspicious Yamim Nora’im. The asifah, organized by the renowned Misaskim organization, is the brainchild of the group’s founder and director, Mr. Yanky Mayer. Twenty-six years ago, when Mr. Mayer began developing a reputation as a leading community askan, he started this asifah as something he could do on behalf of sick patients in the community, especially children. As a Hatzolah member, he saw many young people dealing with crippling illnesses, and he knew these tefillos could help. As is so often the case, he never dreamed that this event would ever take off to the extent that it has. In fact, with most large shuls set up for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, it was hard to find a venue for that first year’s gathering. Munkatch shul in Boro Park agreed to offer their space, and with twenty yeshivos joining the inaugural asifas tefillah, the crowd spilled out into the surrounding streets, where the children listened via speakers set up outside. By the next year, it was clear that this event needed a much larger space, as well as hookups to satellite locations. Bobov made its large shul available that second year, and since then the event has been held there every year. The shul, along with the two galleries, can host many thousands of participants and

serves as the international headquarters of this collective cry for Klal Yisroel’s future.

earlier years, the event included a speech by one of the prominent rabbanim present. The speaker would implore the children to utilize their incredible powers of tefillah on behalf of Yidden in need of yeshuos. As the event grew to include other countries where the spoken language was English, Hebrew or anything else other than Yiddish, the speeches were omitted from the annual schedule. It soon became apparent that the magnitude of this event more than speaks for itself! Today, children from over 130 communities partake in the event through a live hookup. This includes communities big and small in dozens of U.S. states, as well as faraway countries in Europe, and even Central and South America, from where communities in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama and Venezuela take part in this special moment. The proceedings, which include Tehillim, Mincha, Avinu Malkeinu and more, are also broadcast live on Kol Mevaser and elsewhere so that all those who wish can daven along during this sha’as rachamim. If the cumulative power of the tens of thousands of prayers isn’t enough, a number of rabbanim have commented on how the achdus shown when children of all groups and backgrounds gather to daven at once surely makes a tremendous impact in Heaven. In a fitting illustration of this, one of the
earlier years saw Reb Shlomo of Bobov, zt”l, share the stage with Rav Pam, zt”l. When the event was over, the two leaders met to inquire about each other’s well-being and wish one another a gmar chasimah tovah. This created such a buzz in the shul that the organizers had trouble getting the large crowd to disperse. Mr. Mayer says that the event’s mission is “to let those who are experiencing heartache and those who are sick know that they are not alone; that there are so many others davening for their yeshuah.” Unfortunately, this translates to a lengthy list of people, and it isn’t feasible to mention individual names during the limited time available. One notable exception came seventeen years ago when the Skulener Rebbe, zt”l, whose grandson had been missing in Eretz Yisroel for two months, joined the asifah, and in his honor, the bachur’s name was announced for all to have in mind. Sadly, it was too late, but the tefillos did appear to bring closure to the family as the very next day, his body was found in a ravine near Meron, r”l. Mr. Mayer shares a story that shows how much the asifas tefillah has become known as the event for all Jewish children. One year, as the shul was being set up, he noticed an elderly man sitting on a bench near where the stage was being built. When the man was asked whether he would like to be

assigned a seat, he pulled a black-and-white photo from his pocket. “These are my two children who were killed in the Holocaust,” he said. “I know they will be here today, and I want to spend this time with them.”

As the year draws to a close, there is an item that takes a special halachic place on the to-do list. Throughout the varied and widespread communities of Klal Yisroel, a practice that has become a most central component of our finances and our lives is that of maaser kesafim, the concept of setting aside ten percent of our profits, gains and income to be distributed to various tzedakah causes. This practice is a central expression of our national personality, and assures that each and every Yid plays a role in ensuring that the needs of the community are met. Within this most beautiful practice, there is specific importance to settling one’s maaser kesafim accounting before Rosh Hashanah.
Why is maaser kesafim so important? And what is the Rosh Hashanah connection? First, some basics. In a textbook world, maaser calculations are straightforward. We have a defined business deal, with a clear beginning and end. Count the money that came in, count the money that went out, divide the difference by ten — and you have your maaser total. In real life, it gets more difficult. For anyone operating a business on a regular, ongoing basis, where do we set the start and end points for income and expenses? Let’s say somebody owns a grocery store. Where’s the demarcation point to mark off when he made a profit? Is it every day? Once a month? Or, take the example of an accountant — does he

need to stop and calculate after each and every return he files?[1] Based on the rulings of the Chofetz Chaim[2] and other poskim, we can lay out the following guidelines: - Calculate, don’t estimate. The general nature of human beings is to inadvertently overestimate what they have given. Nothing can replace clear calculations and hard numbers.[3] - A solution that makes maaser-giving far more manageable and error-free is to maintain a separate bank account exclusively for maaser funds. Receiving a biweekly or monthly paycheck? Separate the maaser right as you receive the payment, and place it into its designated account. Now you have a “post-maaser” account that re-
quires no further calculations, and a maaser account ready for distribution. Do you make your maaser calculations only at intervals? As soon as you make your calculations, slide the money over to the maaser account. Otherwise, it is quite possible to find oneself at year’s end with a large outstanding maaser debt without the funds to cover it. An additional practical benefit in doing so is that it provides a clear snapshot of just how much one has at his maaser disposal. In turn, this makes it easier to decide how much to allocate to each cause that comes one’s way. - If one has already allocated tzedakah funds and depleted his maaser amount and wishes to give additional tzedakah prior to receiving his next income, he may “advance” the money to maaser, to be added to the ledger at a future point. If doing so, it is advisable to verbally stipulate that this is “on loan” to maaser until the income earned catches up to the donated amount. - Maaser need not be deducted daily. One can make one’s calculations at set intervals. For example, one can set quarterly dates to sit down and make the necessary calculations. At that point, one can add up the sum total of all income against all expenses for the entire quarter. At a minimum, this calculation must be performed at least once a year. One should not allow a full year to lapse without calculating and deducting the appropriate funds. - There is no legal requirement regarding which day to pick for the day of reckoning. It is fully acceptable for each individual to choose whichever day works best for him. For many, this may coincide with filing of taxes. There are, however, many differences between tax calculations and maaser calculations. Not all profits in the maaser ledger are neces-
sarily taxable[4] or declarable. Conversely, not all deductions on a tax return necessarily qualify as maaser.[5] Even those that do qualify might not do so at the same rate.[6] Nonetheless, many find their tax return a good point of departure, providing the basic numbers and the proper frame of mind. - If one has no specific preferred date, the poskim place strong emphasis on clearing the slate prior to Rosh Hashanah, or at the very least, before Yom Kippur.[7] Why is this so? mitzvos before coming into Rosh Hashanah, and this mitzvah no less. In addition, one of the keys to success in judgment is tzedakah. As we know, “teshuvah, tefillah, u’tzedakah maavirin es ro’a hagezeirah” (U’nesaneh Tokef) — giving tzedakah has specific power to ameliorate any rulings that may have gone against us. But perhaps it goes much deeper. LET’S TAKE A MOMENT to focus on the nature of maaser kesafim. The closest companion to maaser kesafim is the Torah obligation to take maaser off newly harvested grain. Each harvest, a farmer must assess the quantity of grain grown and then separate ten percent, to be given to members of Shevet Levi. Though at first glance it may seem quite similar to maaser kesafim, there is a major disparity in the way these maasros are structured. Maaser of grain is deducted straight off the harvest, independent of any other calculations. Suppose one year a farmer’s profit margin after paying for tractors, workers, shipping to market and other costs was only ten percent. In this case, deducting maaser would leave him flat even, with no profit whatsoever. Maaser kesafim, on the other hand, is calculated only as a percentage of the final profit. No profit this year? No maaser kesafim. Why is this so? The Chavas Ya’ir provides a most beautiful insight. When dealing with grain, we are obligated to take a number of deductions. Terumah is allocated to the Kohanim, maaser to the Leviim, maaser ani to the poor. These are all taken straight off the top, calculated based on quantity of grain alone. These are calculated the way we calculate taxes. We all need a properly functioning system to keep Klal Yisroel in stride. That requires funding the Beis Hamikdash. That requires funding the Kohanim and Leviim, to allow them to function in their proper leadership and educational roles without financial
stress. That requires funding the poor, providing a basic safety net for society. To ensure these are all properly funded, we are charged certain taxes. As the goal is the very critical system upkeep, these taxes are calculated without being tied to other factors. Think of a store owner who pays real estate taxes, regardless of whether he turns a profit. Not so maaser kesafim, which comes with an entirely different understanding. We look around the world and see all sorts of people engaged in all sorts of businesses. In every line of work, we see winners and we see losers. There are those who are out there toiling hard, day in, day out. Years pass, and they are still struggling for financial security, while others in the very same field somehow manage to strike gold with apparent ease. What divides those who achieve financial success from those who don’t? Is it their brains? Effort? Connections? These all help to a degree, but taking a hard look at all the people we know generally dispels these factors pretty easily. Looking back at our friends from school, are the ones at the top of the financial pyramid the brightest or most savvy of the class? On occasion, but certainly not in high enough proportion to serve as a reasonable explanation. Ultimately, we know the answer. Effort, brainpower and hard work invested in a business serve as nothing more than the requisite hishtadlus. They do not, however, directly im-

The only arbiter of how much a person will make is Hakadosh Baruch Hu. He alone, based on His own calculations (which are completely beyond us), determines which investment will skyrocket and which will shockingly and suddenly fall off a cliff. What can a person do, then, to improve his likelihood of achieving success? For starters, he can bring in Hakadosh Baruch Hu as a Partner. Have a stake in the business that is dedicated to Him. This is what maaser kesafim is all about. By allocating a portion of my business toward the causes Hashem wants me to support, success is no longer my personal matter. It’s a partnership with Hakadosh Baruch Hu and an investment He’ll see more reason to assist. It stands to follow that maaser kesafim is calculated only on profit.

After all, investors get a cut only when the company turns a profit.[8] WE’RE COMING UP to Rosh Hashanah, and we’ll be giving a lot of thought to the year ahead. What do we want? What do we need? A year of health. A year in which we can leave our homes without fear. The ability to visit and spend time with our parents and children. Financial security. Success in raising our children. To marry off our children. We have a whole litany of ever-so-important requests. But why should He say “Yes”? Do we have any justification for asking for all this? If we’re asking simply because we want something, that’s not much of a reason for our wishes to be granted. In truth, though, as is evidenced throughout our tefillos on Rosh Ha-
shanah, we’re coming with a very simple approach. We’re here for Hakadosh Baruch Hu. We live our lives as His employees, and we’re trying, under all sorts of conditions, to fulfill what He wants from us. To the degree that our goal is to accomplish His goals, it is only natural that He should help us out. Just as it is logical for an employer to provide coffee, a snack room and paid leave in order to keep his employees functioning at a high level, so too we can ask Hakadosh Baruch Hu to provide us with what we need in the year ahead so that we will be able to truly serve him properly. We turn to Him on Rosh Hashanah, pledging to renew our end of the contract for the year ahead, with renewed dedication — and by the same token, we ask Him to provide us the wherewithal to make our commitments reality. If, however, we are committing for the year ahead, we must necessarily focus on the year gone by. Did I take last year’s partnership seriously? Perhaps it is here that the settling of maaser kesafim accounts comes in. It’s hard to renew with a Partner when you haven’t yet paid off your old obligations. He has a ten-percent stake, the causes he wants you to support are waiting desperately for the payout, and you’re withholding the cash? Not a very good situation from which to begin your contract renewal negotiations. If we truly view Hakadosh Baruch Hu as an integral part of our everyday business and are vigilant in ensuring that we fulfill our obligations that are listed in our contract with Him, we stand all the better chance of beginning a new year with a fresh start, good news, health, prosperity and all the tools to help us serve Him. We are guaranteed that giving maaser brings one wealth — yet many who give maaser are not wealthy. While we have no actual idea what a person was destined to earn prior to giving maaser, and are therefore in no real position to question, the above framework does provide us additional room for an answer. Maaser is the creation of a partnership, but there are other ways for the partnership to be violated. Are we properly fastidious concerning ribbis, ona'ah, hasagas gevul, divrei mischar b'veis haknesses — or the myriad other halachos one encounters in a business environment? The partnership with Hakadosh Baruch Hu brings riches, but we can ruin it by being unfaithful to our contract with our Partner.

“Yanky, Moishy, Nachman, do you have your passports?” Each excited passenger nodded his head dutifully. We were surrounded by a roomful of luggage. Duffel bags, rolling suitcases and handheld paraphernalia occupied every surface.

My husband and two sons had spent the last week packing their bags with every form of edible known to man. All the food they could possibly need for two days of yom tov and two flights had been carefully labeled and packaged by eager young hands. Pomegranate, apples and honey, even the head of the fish — not a thing had been left out. They had shopped, folded their white shirts, and weighed their packages conscientiously. All I’d done was hide notes in their overflowing piles. Each note contained my heartfelt assurance that I would miss them tremendously. Hopefully that would help them remember me when they were several thousand miles away as I spent Rosh Hashanah without them on this side of the ocean. And now it was departure time. “No way you want to stay home instead, right?” I asked my husband. He gave me a rueful look but didn’t need to respond. I knew the answer. Amid frantic honking on our congested Boro Park street, Yanky and Moishy heaved overstuffed bag after overstuffed bag into the trunk of the car service. Initially, the overburdened trunk refused to close, but after much coaxing it finally shut with a groan. Then it was time for the boys to get into the car too. I watched them with my throat full, though I tried to smile as I waved them off. I was happy to see them so excited, each boy with a huge grin on his face. My husband’s eyes were crinkling too. But this was way harder than I had imagined. I followed the car with my eyes until I could no longer see them, and then turned around and reentered the house, which was suddenly eerily quiet and large. There was one last remaining suitcase on the floor, a purple piece made of hard plastic. My personal belongings were stacked neatly inside, as I would be going on a trip, too. I surveyed my sparkling clean kitchen and couldn’t help but picture what it would look like now if I had been planning on staying home for yom tov. In my mind I saw the desserts being whipped up and heard the oven timer ringing. Well, none of that for me this year. When my husband had originally broached the topic of traveling to Uman for Rosh Hashanah, I hadn’t wanted to hear of it. Not much had changed since then, except that I ended up hearing it anyway. I didn’t lift a finger to help with the preparations, as that would have been way too stressful emotionally. You wouldn’t
believe how capable my family became when they really wanted something and Mommy was on strike! Somehow, I had to find a coping strategy for managing my own yom tov. I called my sister Leah in Chicago and unceremoniously invited myself to her, a pleasure I’d never had before. She claimed she would be thrilled to have me, so I claimed I was thrilled with the arrangement too. Chicago is a lovely city. I’d always wanted to visit my sister in her new hometown, and I wasn’t at all disappointed. Her kids were delighted to see me, and I was graciously given one of my nieces’ bedrooms. Her home looked just like my home usually looks on Erev Yom Tov — it was lively and busy, and it smelled heavenly. I’ll admit it — it was not easy when we bentched licht in her squeaky-clean dining room; I pictured my family far away, already in the middle of Maariv. I hoped they had found my notes, because I was missing them tremendously. We settled on the couch after licht bentchen, and my nieces and nephews played at our feet. “I don’t know how you’re managing it, Rochel,” my sister commented. “It was probably so hard to let your whole family go away for Rosh Hashanah. I mean, I know there are a lot of women who do it, but I totally can’t imagine doing it myself.” I nodded. “I can’t either. I didn’t actually do anything, aside from not physically stopping them from going!” Leah smiled. “But there are plenty of women who really are happy and work really hard when their husbands go. I respect them as much as you do, believe me,” I assured her. Being a guest for yom tov felt weird. It was like watching the goings-on from behind a glass wall, being there but not quite part of it. The seudos were uplifting and the food was delicious, but it just wasn’t the same as yom tov at home; I couldn’t enjoy it all in the same way. Sisters being sisters, though, we definitely had a grand time! “Can’t wait until next time!” I was waving goodbye again, but this time from the inside of the car. My adorable nieces and nephews stood smiling and waving. How different was this farewell than my last one! I arrived home a few hours before my family, so I had time to anxiously await their homecoming. They tumbled into the house in an exuberant wave, beaming as they jabbered away, each wanting to tell his version of the experience they had just had. For the next week, Uman was the only topic of conversation, and I couldn’t spoil my menfolk’s enthusiasm when I saw just how much they had gained. Their Rosh Hashanah experience was rehashed and retold, again and again. It was evident how much they had enjoyed the trip and gained from it. I was starting to understand those heroic women who happily let their husbands and sons travel for yom tov, helping them every step of the way. After all, it’s an investment that brings yearlong dividends. I think next year I’ll let them go again. More happily this time.

EARLY PUSHKAS During the time of the first Beis Hamikdash, the Kohen Yehoyadah placed a large box with a hole in its cover near the entrance before the mizbe’ach. The contributions that Yidden dropped inside were used to repair and refurbish the Beis Hamikdash (Haftorah, Shabbos Shekalim; Melachim II, 12:10). Throughout the ages, a large chest was placed permanently in shuls, and used as a tzedakah box. Many of them had several compartments — for shul maintenance, hachnasas kallah, hachnasas orchim, and the local poor and talmidei chachamim, among other worthy causes. In the late 1700s, the concept of keeping a smaller-scale personal pushka in every Yiddishe home became popular.
REB MEIR BAAL HANESS AND THE PUSHKA A great many of our pushkas bear mention of Reb Meir Baal Haness. Why is that? Reb Meir stated that he would intervene on behalf of anyone who donates to the poor of Eretz Yisroel in his zechus. The Baal Shem Tov and other gedolim posit that giving tzedakah in the merit of Reb Meir Baal Haness is the harbinger of all kinds of yeshuos. Indeed, thousands corroborate this, relating that they merited salvation after donating tzedakah in the zechus of this holy tanna.

KOLLEL SHOMREI HACHOMOS Following the Chasam Sofer’s advocacy for the resettlement of Yerushalayim, more than 200 rabbanim in Austro-Hungary convened to establish Kollel Shomrei Hachomos, a fund that would assume responsibility for the support of the budding yishuv. In the 160+ years since the fund’s founding, the pushka remains its main source of income. Kollel Shomrei Hachomos designs pushka models for every location — home, shul, business, store, car, pocket and the “zekel,” or pouch. Their latest is the “virtual pushka,” where you can conveniently send your contribution in a few clicks.

GET YOUR PUSHKA Kollel Shomrei Hachomos makes sure every new home is equipped with a pushka by sending out thousands of chassan-kallah packages to new couples every year. Pushkas are also distributed upon request. EMPTY YOUR PUSHKA What to do with the money in your pushka? Representatives knock door-to-door to collect the pushka funds. In addition, people can bring their accumulated pushka funds to anyone in Reb Meir Baal Haness’s worldwide network of gabba’im. Mailings are circulated from time to time, listing the gabba’im in each locale. Annual dinners and parties are a great place to bring the contents of your pushka. People often mail in the sum total of the coins and bills or process the donations online. During COVID-19, Kollel Shomrei Hachomos wasn’t sleeping. They paraded a Pushka Truck down the streets, playing music and distributing treats. Close to 5,000 pushkas were collected before Pesach. In some places, such as Lakewood, where the annual summer dinner cannot be held as usual, the Pushka Truck is doing the rounds instead.

Similarly, Kollel Chibas Yerushalayim was launched by gedolim in Galicia, to provide for Galicianer Yidden who undertook the challenge of settling in Eretz Yisroel.
Perhaps the most widespread virtual pushkas are the electronic Nedarim Plus processing stands. They can be found throughout Eretz Yisroel, primarily in shuls.
The most up-to-date tzedakah box is the virtual version.
The funds they raised helped forge a unique bond between those in Europe and their former neighbors now living in Eretz Yisroel. The shekel kodesh donations were viewed as each Yid’s personal part in the zechus of yishuv Eretz Yisroel. Kollel Chibas Yerushalayim actively fundraises primarily via the pushka to cover the cost of its wide range of activities and campaigns.
Nedarim Plus began as a project to assist gabba’im. Instead of waiting until Erev Yom Kippur to pay their dues and aliyah costs, mispallelim could contribute right away on Motzei Shabbos, without even needing cash in their pockets. Since all shuls are in the system, people can donate to any shul remotely. So, after a visit to Tzfas for Shabbos, you can swipe the cost of your aliyah at a stand in Bnei Brak.

Nedarim Plus soon became a great fundraising tool, with practically every tzedakah and chesed organization listed in the system, too. It’s easy for contributors and brings in more money for shuls and organizations. As of now, a network of this extent does not seem to be prevalent in other countries. Nedarim Plus is contacted at least once a week by callers in the United States and Europe, all asking to link their communities to the program.
