Blemishes to Beautiful: The skincare help you never knew existed
W
hile aging is an unavoidable fact of life, Chaya, like every other woman, wanted to age gracefully. However, spots and facial lines were appearing regularly on her skin, hard-earned signs that she’s passed a growing number of birthdays. How to retain the wisdom, maturity and charm of growing older without compromising on her looks? Like many teens, Shevy suffered from acne, but hers was particularly intense and left unsightly marks on her face. There’s only so much makeup can do, and Shevy didn’t want to face the rest of her future self-conscious about her appearance… There are many challenges confronting a new mother, but Sara didn’t know that very dry skin and stretch marks were some of them. In addition to contending with sleepless nights and cranky mornings, Sara was having a hard time facing herself in the mirror. Chaya, Shevy and Sara each faced painful realities...
Until they discovered the magic of Bilase.

erasing years of struggling in almost no time.
Chaya, for example, recently experienced a laser resurfacing and RF microneedling. This tightened the skin on her face, removed wrinkles, and eliminated her crepey, pitted skin. It literally peeled away years of spots and left Chaya’s face smooth, soft and glowing. Her unbecoming skin became a thing of the past after just a few easy sessions. Shevy’s face is already softer and glowing. She’s thrilled with how natural and beautiful she looks, relishing the compliments her friends keep showering her with. Sara is finally enjoying motherhood to the fullest. Her stretch marks are all but gone and her dry skin is back to its healthy, supple norm. These three fortunate women will attest that their

SACRED WINE Thank you for consistently producing such a quality publication. There is something I would call to your readers’ attention. I’ve noticed in some recent ads that there are wines from Israel of 2015 vintage still being sold. For those unaware, 2015 was a shemittah harvest, and all wines from Eretz Yisroel from 2015 are of shemittah concern, whether it is marked on the bottle or not. Some are otzar beis din, some are heter mechirah. This is not to say they are forbidden; they can be entirely kosher, yet due to the kedusha have very serious consequences on how one may (or may not) buy them, use them, and dispose of them. Make sure to ask your rav or posek for guidance before buying any such bottle. J.R.

RE: KNOW BEFORE YOU GO (Inbox, Issue 54) Thank you, V. Friedman, for bringing to my attention the clarifications about the halachos of giving tzitzis to a gentile for cleaning. My husband looked it up. As you wrote, the Rema clearly states not to do so. The Mishnah Berurah says that one should be machmir and take off the tzitzis before giving in a tallis, and if they can’t they may be meikel. However, in today’s day in age, when we have dry cleaners owned by Yidden, why not do it in the best way? The Original Letter Writer

RE: A TABLE OF TRADITION (Inbox, Issue 53) A reader wrote in your Inbox that there is a running debate in her family about whether peanuts are also considered nuts and that the jury is still out. Well, she can call the jury back in. Peanuts are definitely not nuts, despite the English misnomer. Peanuts are legumes. The bracha made on nuts is ha’eitz. The bracha on legumes is ha’adamah, which is the bracha we make on peanuts. On Pesach, Ashkenazim eat all tree nuts, but they don’t eat peanuts because they are considered kitniyos. Also, it is only in the English language that peanuts are called nuts. In Hebrew, peanuts are called botnim. And there is no minhag Yisroel that is based upon an English name for an item! RE: THEIR TIME TO LEARN (Inbox, Issue 53) Dearest Confused Mother, I don’t know what your family dynamics are and how many children you have at home, but it seems from your letter that your middle school daughter is your youngest. Many mothers, baruch Hashem, have large families with their oldest being middle school age. As someone who makes yom tov at home and is overwhelmed and exhausted, in my opinion the girls have too much school for this time of the year, not to mention too much homework and too many tests! You mentioned the girls need to learn. Our grandmothers and great-grandmothers turned out pretty amazing without learning all about yom tov. Whatever our girls do learn, on the days when it’s not so hectic yet, is a plus but not a necessity! What we need to teach them is that currently helping at home is more important. I truly hope schools don’t take your advice and give the girls less days off before Pesach. And no, the girls are not helping from 9 a.m.; but once they come home from a full day or even a half day of school, after being pulled out of bed at 7 a.m. to make the bus, they are too exhausted to help and we can’t even expect it from them. (Additionally, by that time of day, mothers with little children home are too exhausted to do their yom tov prep.) If you feel your daughter should know a lot more about yom tov, may I suggest that you teach it to her at home when you don’t need her help and she has nothing to do? Thank you for understanding. A Very Exhausted Mother

be sauteed together with the pastrami or simply mixed in at the end? Thanks! RIVKY FRIEDMAN RESPONDS: Thank you for pointing out the omission. The coleslaw mix should be added together with the duck sauce, mustard and garlic powder, as noted in the first step.
NOT THE TASTE I EXPECTED (Re: Meats Fit for Royalty, Issue 51) I have a question regarding the chuck-eye roast recipe you featured. It seemed so easy and had such simple ingredients that I was excited to try it. The taste wasn’t great, though. Is this the way chuck-eye roast tastes, or is 2½ cups of wine perhaps too much? Was there a typo in the recipe? Rivky RIVKY FRIEDMAN RESPONDS: This recipe is correct; there are no typos. I’ve actually received some rave reviews on it, because like you said, it’s so simple. I’m sorry that the taste isn’t to your liking. Some people don’t especially like wine in meat recipes, so perhaps that’s what bothered you. Some of our readers have tried it with different cuts of meats and were very pleased with the results. If you don’t want to serve the meat as is, you can repurpose it for a supper recipe (think meat pizza or sandwiches) by sautéing chopped-up meat with some onions and sauces.
YOUR VOICE AWARENESS THEN AND NOW (Re: Entering With Awe) The series Entering With Awe by Rabbi Yechezkel Elias is very insightful and superbly written. It brought to mind the “stop the talking in shul” movement that was founded by my late younger brother, Rabbi Moshe (Max) Sefrin, z”l. He had come across an article in a YU publication about the severity of the then-prevalent problem of people gathering at the back of the shul and talking and socializing instead of davening. Using his own meager funds, he invested in an extensive mailing campaign to shul rabbanim about the severity of the above-described transgression, appealing to them to act. To encourage and assist them in this holy endeavor, he devised several means (such as a certification for congregations to display as a “no talking in shul congregation” and more). He named his whole project Awareness. All the above, and more, has by now coalesced into the present “Stop the Talking in Shul” campaign. Rebbetzin Rivka Rochel (Ruth) Finkelstein

WEEK 4:
FINDING YOUR PLACE With the city of Sedom teetering on the brink of destruction, Avraham Avinu stood in tefillah, beseeching Hakadosh Baruch Hu to find a way to view the inhabitants with an element of positivity, a possible way to save the city. Ultimately, he could not find any redeeming factor, and the next morning Sedom went up in flames. The pasuk tells us that on the day of the destruction Avraham Avinu arose early for his morning tefillos and returned to the very spot where he had stood in tefillah the day before. Avraham Avinu understood that there is something unique about having a fixed location for tefillah, and he would return to that same spot each day. In Maseches Brachos[1], Rav Chelbo quotes Rav Huna saying that anyone who emulates Avraham Avinu’s conduct in this regard will receive special assistance from Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Hakadosh Baruch Hu will stand by their side much as He stood by Avraham Avinu’s side. Not just a laudable side note, this concept is enshrined in halacha, necessitating that a person maintain a set place for tefillah. This idea finds expression on two levels. The first level is that of selecting a specific beis haknesses to be one’s designated location for tefillah. The second level is within the beis haknesses, maintaining a particular seat or spot as one’s fixed place[2] In regard to the first level, this does not require that one maintain the exact same beis haknesses for every single tefil-
lah. The primary concern is that there be a clear system of consistency. For example, it is entirely acceptable to have one fixed location for weekday tefillos, while maintaining a different regular location for tefillos on Shabbos. Similarly, one might wish to have one place of tefillah near home for Shacharis, while regularly davening Mincha at a location near work. This, as well, is perfectly acceptable.[3] In regard to the second level, a particular seat or spot is not limited to the exact chair or floor space, but instead includes a four-amah radius (close to eight feet) on all sides.[4] This will generally afford the ability to sit in a number of seats while still adhering to the concept of keeping to a set spot — a degree of flexibility that often comes in handy. On both levels, the consistency must be maintained unless there is a specific greatly pressing need to deviate.[5]
Daven in a spot once, and you’ve created a place of kedusha. And it’s not just any kedusha — it’s yours.
What’s the big deal? Why is this so important?
• First and foremost, having a dedicated spot is critical for fostering the proper concentration and attention for tefillah. This is true on a number of levels. It allows one to begin tefillah without having to spend time searching for a vacant spot, and even after locating one, being distracted by the uncertainty of whether someone will be arriving shortly to lay claim to the seat. • Further, as tefillah proceeds, sitting in a new seat gives a person a new vantage point, seeing people, places and things from a different angle, with a whole new world of distrac-
tions. Keeping the same seat and shul allows the noise of surroundings to fade, enabling a person to gain control of his own concentration.[6] • Beyond distractions, it is necessary to approach tefillah with a systematic focus. Maintaining a basic rigidity of system demonstrates both to Hakadosh Baruch Hu and oneself that this is not a random, haphazard event, squeezed in when convenient, but rather something worthy of being a proper anchor in one’s life, a fixture that doesn’t get bumped around.[7] • The concept of tefillah is modeled after the concept of korbanos offered in the Beis Hamikdash. We do not have the wherewithal today to draw close to Hakadosh Baruch Hu with the mechanism of a physical korban, but on some level, we very much have the ability to recreate the same effect and result via tefillah. To this end, much of our tefillah is struc-
tured on the paradigm of korbanos. Just as each korban had a designated spot within the Mikdash, a zone from which it could not leave, so too, tefillah must have a dedicated zone.[8] • As mentioned previously, a powerful ingredient in tefillah is that of kedushas hamakom, the sanctity of the location where you stand. It’s a lot easier to install a phone line when the infrastructure is already in place, and it’s a lot easier to connect to Hakadosh Baruch Hu in a spot of kedusha. Daven in a spot once, and you’ve created a place of kedusha. And it’s not just any kedusha — it’s yours. You’ve created a bond; now go back and build on it, making it ever stronger with every tefillah.[9] An extremely important point to note is that the halacha requiring a makom kavua, a fixed spot, is not limited to the beis haknesses. In most every Jewish home, there is a constant amount of tefillah offered on a daily basis within its
IN SUMMATION: 1) One must maintain set places for tefillah, both in regard to which beis haknesses to daven in, and in regard to specific seat within the beis haknesses. Even at home, one should maintain a dedicated spot. 2) As long as one is within four amos of one’s set seat, one is considered to be in the makom kavua.

walls. It might be the mother of the family, grabbing a few cherished moments before her children awake. It might be a child, laboring to pronounce the few paragraphs of tefillah he or she has learned. It might be an elderly grandparent, whispering the words as his thoughts take him to the days when he had more strength. These tefillos may not be taking place within the walls of a beis haknesses, but the halacha remains very much the same. One should have, to the degree possible, a dedicated room or quiet spot within one’s home.[10] Why is this? The same mechanics at play in a beis haknesses hold true in one’s home. A person needs to focus, to block out the distractions that tend to abound at home. Having a dedicated room allows for that. This is the no-distraction zone. Not merely practical, a fixed setting sets the tone, putting one in a proper frame of mind — something all the more difficult at home, in an environment lacking the stimulus found in a beis haknesses. Indeed, many of us have seen this manifest during the darker periods of the past year. Cooped up at home with children of all ages, with all normal educational framework defenestrated, many set up home versions of a beis haknesses, “Our Family Shul,” in a dedicated room in the house, something that did wonders for providing a real framework for meaningful tefillah. But it goes further. Chazal tell us that our shuls take on hallowed status, becoming imbued with the very kedusha of Eretz Yisroel. The unique aura and power implanted in the very fiber of Eretz Yisroel exists in vibrancy in all our batei haknesses, giving us the ability to tap into the benefits and perks of Eretz Yisroel though at a distance. The Shelah[11] writes that a person has the ability to create a tangible piece of kedushas Eretz Yisroel in his very own home. Dedicate a spot for Hakadosh Baruch Hu in your home, and He will make it a piece of His home. Think for a moment of being given the chance to transport yourself to Eretz Yisroel each morning for a few minutes. The ability truly is there, and the benefits of taking advantage are immeasurable. With a significant portion of the state’s Jewish communities falling into areas classified by Governor Andrew Cuomo as COVID-19 hot spots, the past week has been one for the books, with a new round of shutdowns going into effect closing schools, shuls, restaurants and businesses for a minimum of two weeks. Cuomo stunned area residents by announcing the drastic closures in an all-out effort to curb an ongoing uptick in COVID-19 cases on October 6, just hours after assuring community leaders in the state’s largest Jewish neighborhoods that he would allow shuls to operate at reduced capacities. Mass gatherings were also banned, with Cuomo warning of $15,000 fines per day for violations, and fines as high as $1,000 per person for those who fail to social distance or wear masks when required. A statement released by a member of the Cuomo administration explained that the shift in restrictions was a result of ongoing discussions with medical professionals, who called on the governor to further tighten restrictions to break up COVID-19 clusters. But those words did not sit well with residents of the hot spots. Protestors took to the streets of Boro Park on several occasions to express their displeasure, spurred on by activist Heshy Tischler who captured the media spotlight in the spring by forcibly unlocking city playgrounds in Brooklyn’s Jewish communities that had been closed by authorities while parks in different sections of the city remained open to residents. Rallying crowds that gathered on 13th Avenue to protest the new restrictions, Tischler continued his outspoken criticism of both the governor and Mayor Bill de Blasio, referring to those who had gathered as “my soldiers” and announcing “We are at war.” Tischler was picked up by the NYPD on Sunday night and was arrested on charges of incitement to riot and unlawful imprisonment in connection with an alleged attack on a journalist during one of the Chol Hamoed protests, sparking a backlash among Boro Park residents who claimed that his arrest was unjustified and an abuse of power. Tischler was slapped with four misdemeanor charges and was released on Monday night without bail. Others pursued a different route, bringing multiple legal actions against the state. A motion filed by Agudath Israel of America to have a temporary restraining order halting Cuomo’s executive order was denied by a judge just hours before yom tov began, as was a lawsuit filed by the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, which saw more than 24 of its local houses of worship shut down. Hamodia reported that a lawsuit filed by Turturro Law, located on the Bensonhurst/Midwood border, has yet to be heard.

A letter sent on behalf of Monsey’s Rabbi Chaim Leibish Rottenberg charged that the lockdown had no scientific or epidemiological justification and unconstitutionally discriminated against the Orthodox Jewish community, with a lawsuit to follow if the regulations remained in place. Responding to the legal filings, a Cuomo aide said that the lockdowns were based on hard data and that the red zones were created in areas that had the highest concentration of COVID-19 cases in the state. “We’ve been sued virtually every day for every action taken,” noted Rich Azzopardi, a senior adviser to the governor. “We’re concentrating on reducing the virus in these hot spots and saving lives, period.” While some made arrangements for smaller minyanim, it was yom tov as usual at others, with 62 fines totaling $150,000 handed out over the weekend in New York City, five of which were given to “non-compliant religious congregations.” In another attempt to prevent mass gatherings, a large section of the Monsey area was turned into a frozen zone by 6 p.m. Simchas Torah afternoon, with roadblocks set up in advance of the 25th yahrtzeit of the Ribnitzer Rebbe on Isru Chag in an attempt to limit the number of people coming to the beis olam. Organizers of the annual gathering, which typically attracts more than 20,000 people from the greater New York area and beyond, had worked hard to ensure public safety for the event, replacing the large walled tent at the Rebbe’s tzion with an open canopy and marking the path with social distancing warnings, reported VIN News. But with the latest lockdown measures in effect, police shut down much of the area and Town of Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht said that the New York State Police and other agencies were working together to prevent crowds. “We’ve had thousands of people in past years,” Specht told The Journal News. “This year, because of the current pandemic and the governor’s executive orders, that would not be permissible.”

Recap: Binyamin comes home for Shabbos, and his mother finally accosts him about the questionable way he went about earning money. Elisheva tells him all about Mrs. Hartstein and the silver yad that had been in the envelope — and that has thankfully been found. Ulush is feeling lonely in New York. She and Janek receive letters from both Gustav and Edo in Eretz Yisroel. The boys are each in a separate orphanage, and both of them are feeling lonely too. “Elisheva?” “Yes?” “Hi, it’s Blumi Hartstein.” “Oh, hi, Blumi. How are you?” “Great, baruch Hashem. Listen, how many children do you think will be attending the hachnasas sefer Torah?” “We don’t really know.” Elisheva set down the basket of wet laundry and adjusted the phone wedged between her ear and shoulder. “We have to ask the gabbaim in the shul, and then add our own children to the count.” “Oh, won’t the procession begin in Bnei Brak? Won’t it be leaving from your house?” “We would want it to, but it’s a bit too much of a mess to divide a hachnasas sefer Torah between two cities, you know?” Elisheva chuckled. “It will leave from Rav Tawil’s home; he’s the rav of the shul. They’ll finish writing the letters there.” “I’m asking because we want to donate pekelach. I hope you don’t mind that I feel like I have a part in this hachnasas sefer Torah.” “You really do have a big part,” Elisheva said warmly. “You are sponsoring the seudah. Tell me, do you have any idea, once we’re talking, if there is room to inscribe a l’ilui nishmas on the outside of the sefer Torah?”
“It’s not a velvet mantle, you know,” Blumi said. “It’s made of wood. Unless you ordered one with silver as well?” “No,” Elisheva said, “but my husband got the phone number of an expert wood craftsman, and he’ll speak to him. I want to write that it should be l’ilui nishmas my father’s family, but I’m not sure if it’s funny to ask for such a thing, if there’s no room.” “Honestly, I don’t know,” Blumi said. “But I’ll ask my husband, or my mother-in-law, if I don’t catch him. Both of them should know the answer to that. Do you need a lot of space? Was it a big family?” “It’s sad.” Elisheva’s laugh was hollow and lacked any mirth. “There’s nothing to write. My father knows nothing about his family.” “He knows nothing? What does that mean?” “He was a little boy during the war, and he was in a Christian orphanage in Bratislava, in Slovakia. When the war ended, he was handed over to Jewish people, but no one had any information about his background. And then he came to Eretz Yisroel, grew up here, and that’s it…” “Oy, it’s scary to think about it.” Blumi rocked slowly back and forth in her rocking

chair. “And that’s how you grew up? Without any family on your father’s side?” “Without family would have been normal. There were lots of lone survivors like him; he wasn’t the only one. The thing is —” she groped for the right words “— he didn’t even have memories; he had no past. When there’s no past, you have to work very hard to create a good future. As a child, he wandered from place to place, until eventually he found himself, baruch Hashem.” “Oy, it sounds horrible…” “Were your parents Holocaust survivors?” Elisheva put the empty basket down on the floor. “You seem to be about my age.” “We might be around the same age, but if you’re telling me that your father was a little boy during the war,” Blumi said, “that means that my parents were much older. My older brothers are already marrying off their grandchildren; I’m the youngest.” She paused. “My mother and father married in Eretz Yisroel before the war. My mother was from Yerushalayim, and her family was originally from Hungary; my father was born in Hungary, but came to Eretz Yisroel with his family at age twelve. So I grew up with lots of relatives on both sides.” “The type of family I always, as a girl, dreamed of having,” Elisheva concluded. “Where do your brothers and sisters live? Do your children at least have lots of cousins?” “They do, but from my husband’s side. I’m an only child.” “Really! So you really grew up like that, in absolute silence.” “Not absolute silence…” Elisheva chuckled as she pulled the shutters closed. “I was a very active girl, baruch Hashem, and my mother wasn’t too quiet either… But my father is,” she added thoughtfully. “Is what, the quiet type?” “Yes, the very quiet type. I
have no idea if it’s an inborn trait, or if life did it to him.” Blumi shifted in her chair, the one her daughters had bought for her twentieth wedding anniversary. “It sounds so sad… Wasn’t it possible for him to try to figure out who he was, maybe based on his first name?” “He got his secular first name in the orphanage. He got his Jewish name after the war. So no one knows what his real name is.”
“I don’t think so. At least, I don’t remember any traveling or searching during my childhood. But on the other hand, it’s possible that there were things I didn’t notice.” She paused. “He never told me anything. Although just a few years ago, he told me about one effort that he did make, when he was a bachur.” *****
Haifa, 5723/1963* The street was sleepy, baking in the burning sun. Yisroel Bentzion walked down the narrow sidewalk, which was covered with wild berries that had fallen from the tightly crowded trees, and studied the house numbers. Twentyfour. Twenty-six. Twentyeight. A small flight of stairs brought him to the door on the first floor. The Weiss family. He knocked. “Is Reb Akiva here?” he asked the woman who answered the door. “No, he’s not home now,” Rabbi Weiss’ wife said. “Do you know where I can find him?” “He should be coming home at lunchtime. Do you want a drink?” “No, thanks. Is… is it alright if I come back at lunchtime?” He was ready to go back down the stairs. “Sure.” The little shul that he found on the street hosted him until after Mincha. Perhaps one of the mispallelim here was Rabbi Akiva Weiss? He had been too young and confused to remember the people who had surrounded them all those years ago… It took several moments after the end of davening until he was able to pick himself up and try again. Aside from the fact that he was a Yid, he had not a single detail to offer about himself. That was not a good place to start with any shadchan. If he hadn’t done it
“He got his secular first name in the orphanage. He got his Jewish name after the war. So no one knows what his real name is.”

“What’s his name today?” “Yisroel Bentzion. I guess one of his Jewish counselors chose the name.” “And there was no family who adopted you, or something like that, in the picture?” “No.” Elisheva paused and then added, “On second thought, there was a couple that was involved in smuggling my father out of the Christian orphanage, and he did keep up with them to some extent. I remember there being some letters and shanah tovah cards from them. And then, when I was ten years old, they came to Eretz Yisroel for a visit, and we traveled to mekomos hakdoshim with them. That was the only time in my life that I got a little taste of what it’s like to have a grandmother, because Ulush, aleha hashalom — that was the name of the woman — was a very warm person.” “They both passed away already?” “Yes. And we don’t have any connection to their children.” “And your father didn’t try, over the years, to search for his real family?”

until now, then it was no doubt time. He had to at least try. The street welcomed him again, much busier than it had been earlier. Again he arrived at the small structure, and this time, he was ushered into a large room. He gratefully accepted the cup of cold water, and then Reb Akiva walked into the room, tall and smiling, and shook his hand. “I’m not sure if you remember me,” Yisroel said shyly. “But I was referred to you by Agudas Yisroel. You were an activist with them after the war, right?” The man nodded. “Do you remember, perhaps, that you helped smuggle two children out of the Catholic orphanage in Bratislava, three years after the war?” Less than twenty seconds elapsed. “Wait, Janek Cohen and his wife were involved in that story, right?” “Yes.” “What’s your name today?” “Today? Yisroel Bentzion. That’s what I wanted to ask you; perhaps you know my real name.” “Your real name…” “Yes. If you have any information about me, or about my family in Bratislava…” Rabbi Weiss gazed at him for a long time. “I’m afraid not,” he said after a moment, in a gentle tone. “I didn’t keep any information about any of the children from them. We shared everything that we knew. I remember you. Both of you, actually.” “And you really knew nothing about our origins?” “Nothing. The activist who took the risk to get you out of there also sneaked into the offices, but there were no details there. I remember your story to this day, because it was a bit unusual to discover Jewish children literally under our noses, three years after the war.” “But how can it be that no one knows anything?” Yisroel’s gaze looked like that of a little chick whose legs had gotten tangled in the mesh of its cage. “Nothing?” Reb Akiva’s eyes tried to emit softness, as if to stroke the feathers, the trapped legs, the eyes crying out
for help. “Regretfully, anything was possible after the Holocaust. You are not the only one, my dear Yisroel, who began life again from zero.” He smiled at the young man. “And as far as I can see, you grew up nicely.” “Yes. Baruch Hashem.” Yisroel smiled. A small smile — and a miserable one — but a smile nonetheless. “I remember a few such children whose parents did not leave any details, or whose information got lost. Most of them were from Poland, but there were also some from other areas…” Rabbi Weiss sighed. “Eliyahu Hanavi will answer all of these questions and mysteries, when he arrives.” “Amen…” Yisroel whispered, his mouth dry. Even the water he tried to sip could not alleviate the parched sensation in his throat. “Where are you these days?” “In Yerushalayim.” “And what about Janek and Ulush Cohen? Have you kept in touch with them? Where are they?” “In America. And yes, we are in touch, to some degree.” He stood up and turned toward the door. “Very nice. Don’t forget to invite them to your wedding!” “B’ezras Hashem.” He smiled again. “In the right time.” “And me as well, okay? I’ll try to check, Yisroel, if perhaps there was some information about you that I don’t recall right now. Don’t give up.” Rabbi Weiss escorted his young guest to the door. It was clear to them both that the last sentence had been uttered only to keep that tiny ray of hope still alive. ***** “And no one ever found a single relative who could reveal to my father who he is,” Elisheva concluded, after sharing the story with Blumi. To be continued... *This segment is based on a true, sad incident that occurred in the home of my grandfather, zt”l, in Haifa in those years. Just like in the story, in the real case as well, my grandfather was unable to help the bachur who was begging for some information about his own identity.

Trump and Biden Spar in Nasty Presidential Debate THE PULSE: President Trump and former Vice President
Biden engaged in a testy exchange for 90 minutes during the first presidential debate on September 29. Fox News’ Chris Wallace, who moderated the debate, struggled to keep it focused on substantive issues. The president was combative and frequently interrupted Biden. Biden also lashed out at the president. Very few issues were adequately addressed, and many pundits considered it one of the worst political debates in recent American history.
political pundits believe that he failed to do that. His combative style, which plays well to his base, made him less appealing to female voters, an important demographic that he needs to win over. Conservative talk radio icon Rush Limbaugh was critical of Trump’s performance and said that Trump “had a strategy, and the strategy didn’t work.” Joe Biden did not have many memorable moments either. Still, with initial expectations for his performance set very low, he came off well enough and showed that he could hold his own against the president.
THE IMPACT: With President Trump trailing in the polls,
Pence and Harris Square Off in Vice Presidential Debate
the debate provided him with a forum to score a decisive victory and win middle-of-the-road voters to his cause. Many
THE PULSE: Vice President Pence and Senator Harris debated in Salt Lake City on October 7. In contrast to the mostly
54 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 14, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
mean-spirited presidential debate, the vice presidential debate adhered to standard political norms. Vice President Pence was cordial but firm in his positions. He hit Senator Harris over her past support for liberal environmental causes. He also claimed that the Biden-Harris tax plan, which would raise taxes on Americans making over $400,000 a year and roll back Trump’s corporate tax cuts would harm an economy already weakened by the pandemic. Pence repeatedly challenged Harris to answer if a Biden-Harris administration would pack the Supreme Court with additional justices, and she refused to answer the question. Senator Harris hammered Pence on his administration’s attempt to get the Supreme Court to overturn Obamacare. She claimed that the administration’s actions would put the health of many Americans at risk. Harris also claimed that a Biden-Harris administration would repair relationships with America’s allies strained under the Trump administration. She committed to funding large infrastructure projects to boost the economy and to take a science-based approach toward fighting COVID-19 and addressing global warming. THE IMPACT: With 57 million Americans tuned into the debate, it was one of the most-watched vice presidential debates in history. In contrast, 37 million people watched the 2016 Pence-Kaine debate. Under normal circumstances, the vice presidential debate is usually a political afterthought. However, this election cycle, both presidential candidates are well into their seventies, which makes the choice of candidate on the vice presidential ticket much more consequential. Many political pundits gave Pence the upper hand in the debate, but most believed that Harris did well enough and that the vice presidential debate will not significantly impact the trajectory of the race.
President Trump Contracts COVID-19 THE PULSE: Early Friday, October 2, President Trump announced that he tested positive for COVID-19. The president was hospitalized at Walter Reed Hospital, where he received treatment for his condition. He returned to the White House by Monday evening. At least 24 other individuals in the president’s political orbit recently tested positive for COVID-19, including first lady Melania Trump. On Thursday, President Trump told Sean Hannity that he felt great and was ready to begin campaigning again. On Friday, he sat for a lengthy interview with Rush Limbaugh and claimed that he was healed from COVID-19 and bashed his political opponents. On Saturday, Trump welcomed supporters and addressed a rally on the White House lawn. The president intends to travel to Des Moines, Iowa, and hold an outdoor airport rally on Wednesday. THE IMPACT: President Trump is eager to portray a return to normalcy. The American public does not give him strong marks for his handling of the COVID-19 crisis. Some fault his lax attitude toward mask-wearing and non–social distanced rallies for his contraction of the virus. Trump knows that ev-
ery day spent out of public sight due to the virus is a day that plays to his weakness and prevents him from focusing on the topics that would allow him to make up ground with the electorate. Trump is trailing badly in many polls and urgently needs to make up ground before Election Day. Trump has expressed his intent to keep a robust schedule and campaign every day until the election.
Second Presidential Debate Canceled THE PULSE: The Commission on Presidential Debates can-
celed the second presidential debate scheduled for October 15. The commission had proposed a virtual format due to COVID-19 concerns, but President Trump refused to partake in any format held remotely. The president claimed that a virtual format would put him at a disadvantage and would allow the moderator to cut off responses at whim. There is precedent for virtual-type debates. In 1960 John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon engaged in a virtual debate. Kennedy was in New York, Nixon was in Los Angeles, and moderator Bill Shadel was in Chicago. THE IMPACT: The cancellation of the debate is another set-
back for Trump’s electoral prospects. The debates were expected to work to Trump’s advantage by highlighting Trump’s vigor in contrast to Joe Biden’s advanced age and tendency to make embarrassing gaffes. Trump did not achieve his objectives in the first debate. With the second debate now canceled, it leaves open the possibility that only one more debate may be held between the presidential candidates. The final debate is currently scheduled for October 22 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Biden Continues to Poll Strongly THE PULSE: Democratic candidate Joe Biden continues to poll strongly on a national level and in most key battleground states. According to the RCP polling average, Biden has a 9.8% lead nationally and leads Trump in Florida, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan. Trump will need to make up ground in these states to replicate his surprise come-frombehind 2016 victory. There is little margin for error as Trump won Wisconsin and Michigan by slim margins in 2016. Even a small break in Biden’s direction could prove catastrophic for Trump’s electoral prospects. THE IMPACT: The 2016 election results humbled political
pundits. Too much emphasis was placed on national polling, and the president’s support in key battleground states was undervalued. President Trump connects with many American voters, and his base’s strong support cannot be discounted. However, this cycle, the president is not running as an outsider. He is an incumbent with a record to defend. The current polling numbers are definitely a concern for his campaign and are more troubling than in 2016. The election is less than three weeks away, giving the president minimal time to make up ground. The president will seek to hold massive rallies that play to his strength, build enthusiasm and fight for every vote. Time will tell if he can pull off another victory in 2020.

Who am I? I am the harried housewife who can’t seem to lift her head above the piles of dirty laundry, sinks full of dishes, and calendar of missed appointments. I am the middle-aged individual who flits from job to job. I am the yungerman who never seems to get his act together and keeps on arriving late to simchos and events. But who am I really? What is my core being? I am a talented housewife who can whip up a delectable meal and is well honed in homemaking skills. I am a shrewd businessman who would be an asset to any entrepreneurship. I am a good-natured yungerman, who enjoys spending time with family and friends. I am ADHD. I am a lack of time management. ADHD does not determine a person’s capability or gauge his chances for success. Yes, it is something that needs to be addressed, but with proper treatment and tools an individual can reach and exceed so many milestones. 66 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 14, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

ADHD had always been my middle name, but as a child and young adult, ADHD hadn’t defined my accomplishments and social standing. I was mega-talented, creative and fun to be around. I was always surrounded by a bevy of friends and admirers. My devoted parents compensated for my weaknesses. They stepped in by making my arrangements, packing my stuff, and basically, served me life and pleasure on a silver platter. In yeshivah, I was a wellliked figure. “He’s the best chavrusa around, but he left his watch at home,” my yeshivah mates quipped. The sticklers of punctuality avoided me, but the average bachur overlooked my late-comings and often empty shtender — until he’d had enough of it, and I was left to look for a new chavrusa once more. With marriage came a wife, a shtreimel, and, of course, a host of responsibilities. The first few times when I failed
How true are the words of Peter F. Drucker: “Until we can manage time, we can manage nothing else.” Time is our greatest asset; it is like a monetary gift. Manage it wisely and become rich; squander it and sink into the quicksand of debt. Executive functioning and time management are skills that are super-important in our daily lives. They include skills such as organization, planning and prioritizing, task initiation and sustained attention. The ADHDer can be made aware of those skills and learn how to implement them in his/her life. Joyce Cooper-Kahn, PH.D., defines executive functions as follows: “The mental processes that serve a supervisory role in our thinking and behavior.” A person with good executive function has his eyes set on the master plan of events or tasks. To further explain this vital life skill, she refers to a cycling metaphor: “Smooth executive functioning is like riding a bike. You need to have foundational life skills in place [for example, pedaling, steering, braking and balancing]. But no single skill accounts for the magic that happens when you put them all together.” It is prudent to learn executive skills and ride our “bike” to the most beautiful and productive places!

in my husbandly duties I sugar-coated my way with a little gift, a sincere apology, and a logical, but long-winded excuse. My special wife, who gives me more credit than I deserve, forgave me. With time, I could see that it was becoming increasingly harder and more frustrating for her to put up with my inconsistencies. So how did ADHD brushstroke the grind of my day-to-day life? It colored every facet of my existence with murky hues of gray, brown and black. Paying bills? They were always postponed until the day after. Tomorrow, tomorrow — or later, later — was my mantra. Getting to a wedding or appointment on time was as far from reality as a snowstorm in May. And the big J, my Job, hung in jeopardy because of my constant late arrivals and no-shows. By profession, I am a computer technician and programmer. If I may say so myself, I am a highly skilled programmer. But if I would wear a cap to work, it would say: “I am late to the job, AGAIN.” Although my services are in demand, customers do not appreciate a tardy and unreliable technician, and my boss has threatened me on several occasions. Begrudgingly, he gave me one final chance to prove myself.
agement. You need a toolbox, because just like you can’t assemble furniture without a toolbox, some people need tools to manage their daily tasks in a timely manner.” In my first session I learned about misjudging time. As a helpful exercise, I wrote a piecemeal account of my primary daily tasks. This created an awareness within me that every step in a process takes time. For example: getting to a job on time. What steps does it entail? The actual drive, getting gas, and so on — everything has to be taken into account. Nothing can be overlooked. And no, there is no “tomorrow,” and no refrain of, “I’ll get this done later.” In my second session we created a toolbox: I would journal a daily schedule. In the beginning, I would map out each task in minute-by-minute detail, until my brain would latch on to this kind of thinking by osmosis. And yes, I would stick to this schedule as if my life depended on it. Additionally, I would use sticky notes and helpful alarms to remind me and spur myself on. Finally, I would reward myself for a job well done with little treats and incentives. Life is a glorious journey with many ups and downs. But I am definitely making strides. I’ve noticed my wife smiling more often, and feel more on top of my game in terms of bills, sticking to my shiurim, and household maintenance. Yesterday, my boss called me in for a meeting. “To tell you the truth, I was on the verge of firing you,” he said. “You’re still on probation, but I’m glad that you are shaping up, because you are one of the best and brightest technicians out there.”
What had my father been to me? A solid rock, a trustworthy figure who could solve all my problems. I was supposed to fill the same role in my son’s life.

How to solve my lack of time management? Every individual is different. What works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another. I sought out a trained ADHD coach to help me maximize my potential. My personal take was: I am an adult. I am capable. A coach doesn’t tell you what to do. He makes you a partner in the process. You figure out life together. I want and need to lead an effective and wonderful life. Time management is a process, but coaching gives you the leeway to decide how many sessions you’d like. To date, I have attended only a few sessions, but I feel the overarching effect on my life, finances, and interpersonal relationships. “There is nothing wrong with you,” my coach said, boosting my morale. “You are a good father and husband. A levelheaded friend, brother and neighbor. An individual with powerful strengths. But you are challenged with time man-

This Sukkos saw the local Jewish community in the crosshairs, facing unprecedented heat from the outside, and dealing with communal outrage along with a stubborn virus within. The original COVID-19 outbreak in early spring hit our community with deadly force. As matters began to improve in April, shuls, individuals, and eventually schools slowly scaled back on the isolation and lockdown measures. With life increasingly returning to relative normal and no second outbreak occurring, the consensus in the community was that the virus was safely behind us. 74 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 14, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
In the weeks leading up to Rosh Hashanah, the number of positive cases began slowly rising again. Hatzolah and community leaders pleaded with the public to take this mini surge seriously and wear masks, social distance and of course, isolate if sick or exposed to the virus. Mask usage visibly increased as many davened in small or outdoor minyanim during the Yamim Noraim. Hospitals around the area saw an uptick in admissions and it was hoped that with reinfections a rare occurrence, we will be spared the worst and the spread will be halted. During this time, New York also saw a slightly elevated positivity rate and smaller outbreaks in a number of neighborhoods around the state. Jewish community leaders were in touch with the mayor’s and governor’s offices as the community increased compliance with the protective measures.
Cuomo Goes Nuclear On Tuesday, the second day of Chol Hamoed, Governor Cuomo held a conference call with community leaders about coronavirus hot spots that have emerged in Brooklyn, Queens, Monsey and Kiryas Yoel. On the call, Cuomo asked for assistance in ensuring that everyone followed the rules. “I’m asking you, out of friendship, for your help,” said Cuomo said, according to a transcript of the call. “It’s in your community’s best interest on many levels. It’s in their health interest. It’s [in] their relationship with the surrounding community’s interest. And I know if you inform your community, they will listen to you.” According to audio of the call obtained by Hamodia, the governor said, “The current rule is no more than 50%. In any indoor gathering 50% of capacity…in a synagogue in any venue, any private venue. It’s 50% of capacity. That’s the current law. We have to follow that law. If we don’t follow that law then the infection rate gets worse. Then we’re gonna have to go back to close down. And nobody wants to do that. But I need your help in getting the rate down, and the rate will come down. If we follow the rules on the mask and the social distancing and the 50%.” Cuomo reiterated during the call that he will enforce the 50% capacity rules and will not implement stricter measures if everyone complies. A few hours later, Cuomo shocked the community during his press conference when he announced that the state will be designating red, orange and yellow zones to indicate the severity of an outbreak and the stringency of the lockdown. The red zones will see the strictest measures, where in addition to school closures, all non-essential busi-

“This is not a highly nuanced, sophisticated response,” his admission began. “This is a fear-driven response.” nesses will be closed and shuls will be limited to 25% capacity for a maximum of ten people. Cuomo mentioned that he had spoken earlier to Orthodox community leaders and they were accepting and understanding of these measures, a statement which we soon learned was completely inaccurate. When asked by Hamodia why the governor indicated on the call that he would stick to a 50% capacity limit before changing course, a Cuomo spokesperson responded, “We were still in discussions with the epidemiologists at the time and they made clear that preventing large social gatherings is the key to breaking up these clusters.” Others who know the governor’s thinking point out that the state did look the other way when schools and camps were open despite not being allowed to, and that Cuomo was left with little choice after seeing the number rise and learning that inside the shuls large minyanim were

being held without masks or distancing. Those following the internal dynamics leading up to this decision were incensed that political ramifications were on the governor’s mind when announcing these sweeping measures. During his conference call, he was asked by a participant why the school closures aren’t targeted exclusively for those where students have tested positive. Cuomo’s answer was as shocking as it was illuminating: “This is not a highly nuanced, sophisticated response,” his admission began. “This is a fear-driven response. You know, this is not a policy being written by a scalpel, this is a policy being cut by a hatchet, it’s just very blunt. I didn’t propose this, it was proposed by the mayor in the city, I’m trying to sharpen it and make it better. But it’s out of fear, people see the numbers going up, close everything, close everything [they say], it’s not the best way to do it, but it is a fear-driven response. The virus scares people…” The governor continued: “A lot of you can say that there is a better way to do this, I know, but we are dealing with emotion and fear as much as anything. I will tell you, in New York City we have a real problem with fear and anxiety, people losing confidence in the city and who is moving out and who is afraid, so it is a blunt policy. I agree with you, but at this point I don’t think we can do anything more sophisticated.” For those who had been expecting a sciencebased approach, this admission that he was just working off a mayoral response he disagreed with, and was factoring in whether people moved out of the city, was the clearest indication that the virus surge was not the true motivation behind the new measures. Cuomo’s announcement was met with immediate outrage. If the ex-
cessive steps and deception weren’t enough, the maps outlining the red areas seemed specifically designed to target the frum community. There was no clear criteria for how an area becomes red, orange or yellow, and it was not defined by zip code either. Areas in New York with a higher number of cases and/or positivity rate than Jewish neighborhoods were left off the list while the Jewish areas were targeted for shutdowns. The governor further drew the ire of the community by talking about how the ultra-Orthodox neighborhoods were not compliant while avoiding such generalizations for anyone else. What more, after New York saw weeks of protests where social distancing wasn’t practiced, the governor appeared to apply his personal value system to determine how important Jewish yom tov gatherings are supposed to be. In a country where religious liberty is sacrosanct, this attitude should never be acceptable, many felt. The governor also did not differentiate between small shuls and massive buildings when keeping the limit to ten people, which directly contradicted his claims that he was just following science. In a rare and scathing rebuke, State Senator Simcha Felder, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, Councilman Chaim Deutsch, and Councilman Kalman Yeger released a joint statement where they said they were “appalled” by Cuomo’s words and actions, which they went on to call “disgraceful.” More notable is the end of the statement where they wrote that the community intends to exercise its right to worship freely without interference — in defiance of the governor’s edicts.
The Fallout Cuomo promised hefty fines for those violating the new rules, but it quickly became apparent that the community was not about to obey any of it. While shuls were to face fines of up to $15,000 for every day they are open, there was an attitude of defiance permeating the community, one which monetary penalties could not shake.

I DON’T HAVE THE ANSWERS.
I share my personal journey with a high-energy, hyperactive child as just that: a journey, with highs and lows, ups and downs — and both clarity and confusion. I don’t want to disappoint you: If you seek a clear-cut, how-to essay, this is not it. These are the reflections of a mother of one wonderful and challenging child, who is seeking, searching and struggling, and has found some pinpricks of light and insight. There is a lot of mental health awareness and discussion out there. And among the myriad sorts of issues, if you “only” have ADHD in your basket, that’s no big

deal. It is almost as common as the cold (or the coronavirus). Just look at what else people are dealing with. But here’s the thing: Comparisons are deadly. They kill the trust you have in yourself, the knowledge and validation that you are struggling. They do away with who you are and what this challenge means for you, just because Ritalin is administered to millions every day. Comparisons erase you of individuality and the honesty to assess how your very specific challenge is affecting you. It tells you to get over it, to think about how “everyone” is dealing with it and managing just fine. Away with comparisons!
THE GIFT IN CACTUS WRAPPING High energy is a gift. I look at my nine-year-old Nachman in wonder. He is just bursting with energy that must be about ten times the amount I have. He doesn’t stop, hesitate, reflect, wonder, doubt himself… He just charges full steam ahead. He is a people person, passionate about belonging to a kehillah and following our Rebbe. When he learns of the right thing to do, he plunges straight in — no compromise accepted. His passion comes straight upward and outward without any pause. It leaves me breathless. I believe in Nachman. He will use his energy to do a lot of good in this world; I am absolutely sure of that. I should think about this more often. Because much more often, I’m in a power struggle with my dear Nachman. It starts right when he gets up in the morning. He floats with his whims, and I learned early on that it doesn’t help to nag. Getting dressed, making his bed, eating, packing his bag — it’s all a struggle, from beginning to end. If he’s turned on his favorite CD and is listening to a story in pajamas ten minutes before the bus is coming, there’s not much I can do. I’ve tried many things, but I still haven’t found the way. Setting up a daily schedule has not met with success. Cajoling is a waste of my breath. Warning is a waste of energy. And punishing leaves me black and blue in the end, or calling my husband to rush home before that happens. I’m weary of contests and tired of handing out prizes. All too often, I just want to change his behavior now and not have to recompense him for keeping to a standard code of behavior. I have learned that it is just not worth punishing Nachman for anything other than real red-line violations. Punishing is disastrous for our relationship and for his self-image. I am constantly seeking alternative ways of teaching him obedience. Rare punishments for grave misdemeanors can do some of the job, but

there is still a way to go. Much of the time, I have to step back and expect less obedience in the first place, because it is so hard for him. The less I demand, the less conflict we have. I look away many times from late nights or a messy room, as long as his behavior doesn’t hurt anyone. I am also experimenting with giving him more choices. I tell him to set a time for when he’ll be dressed or start davening, and I find that he sometimes keeps to his self-imposed schedule. He needs power — and maybe that is one path to his success.
Comparisons are deadly. They kill the trust you have in yourself, the knowledge and validation that you are struggling. As I write this, Nachman’s yeshivah is back to only a partial routine as we still battle COVID-19. This means he leaves the house at 10 o’clock on a good day and is back at 1:45 p.m. Until he leaves, I am on full duty, more than I need to be for an infant. I try to get a load into the washing machine and then run to the kitchen to rescue his little brother, who’s screaming in fear of an imminent attack. Or to save the kitchen table from cracking under his powerful drumming. Our current schedule gives him many hours at home, and it is not the setting in which he thrives. I am blessed that Nachman, when properly medicated, does very well in yeshivah. I thank Hashem that he loves people, learning, and stimulation, and that yeshivah routine does him well. This, too, is a gift hidden inside the prickly ADHD wrapping.
THE INDIVIDUAL PATH Raising a child with ADHD is a magnified version of raising any child. It teaches you in a very heightened way the importance of educating each child in his own way, as the Torah advises. I look at this as Nachman’s gift to me. Nachman requires an entirely different set of rules from his siblings. He has very different interests and habits, and a very different personality. Raising him in his own way means showing interest in the myriad exciting things that fill his mind. It's coming up with satisfying answers to his probing questions and interrogations about delicate adult subjects. It's allowing him more freedom and imposing less restrictions. Nachman needs a great deal of stimulation. He wants
New!
Additional Teen Line lights, camera, action. So I let him stay outside on his bike and go to sleep later than I would another child his age (because he also just needs less sleep). He wants to join every Chinese auction ever advertised, and against my general practice, every once in a while I allow him to put in a raffle for that coveted bike. Another of Nachman’s vital needs is money. He always wants more, better, best. I believe money is the language of love he understands. I show him my love by awarding him with “just because” monetary gifts — in my opinion, a cheap path to the priceless knowledge that he feels loved. It’s not the language I myself understand. I would love to cuddle him or verbally express my love, but I actually have to stop myself from doing that often, because Nachman just doesn’t appreciate it.
THE CHALLENGE It saddens me to think about the too-numerous times we have had to discipline, reprimand and punish Nachman. While I try to minimize those instances, I also want to jack up the antidote: genuine appreciation for who my son is. All humans admire and connect with people who are similar to them in nature and beliefs. Being Nachman’s mother has set me on the lifelong journey of going beyond myself. I have to reach beyond my contours of comfort and familiarity and embrace differentness — and appreciate it.
Raising a child with ADHD is a magnified version of raising any child. It teaches you in a very heightened way the importance of educating each child in his own way, as the Torah advises. I remember reading in a chinuch book that when a child misbehaves, a parent has to muster even greater love for the child than usual. This is my call every day, all day with Nachman. I am enjoined to muster my deep-seated love for my child and focus on his shining, beautiful inner world, all while he pushes my buttons. Because this is the truth: Nachman is much greater than all those misdemeanors that come up throughout the day. He is an individual with brimming potential, and if this is what I see, it’s what I’ll get. If I zoom in on the immense positive energy in Nachman, it will grow larger and larger under my lens. If I break the molds I form around him, I will one day watch him reach up to the sky, like a growing tree reaches toward the light of the sun.

Rabbi Green stirred his coffee furiously, clockwise and then counterclockwise, but to no avail. Large, dark brown granules stubbornly lingered at the top of the cup, silently mocking him with their refusal to dissolve. It then occurred to him: He had put in the milk before stirring. The cardinal sin. Excusable on one’s first cup of the day, but this was his third. And it was only 8:55 in the morning. It had been a long, nearly sleepless, night. The school year had begun with so much promise. It was Rabbi Green’s first year teaching eighth grade — the job of his dreams. He was finally going to be able to express his fun creativity in the classroom without needing to create the strictures and discipline necessary in teaching younger grades. But when the fun and games began, they weren’t all his. The talmidim enjoyed Rabbi Green’s youthful enthusiasm, warm personality, and creative classroom activities. However, much to his dismay, he was sometimes only the second most entertaining presence in the classroom. Ari was a unique talent. He was lighthearted, gregarious, smart and very funny. Not only that, but he was an outstanding athlete and a sincerely kind friend. Understandably, he was a particularly well-liked classmate. He was so much fun to be around — unless one happened to be trying to manage a classroom. He couldn’t sit still in class for very long,

and had a tendency to make it quite evident when he had had enough. His antics ranged from cute (“Rebbi? Can I go check to make sure it’s not raining outside?”), to silly (Rabbi Green to class: “So what did the Tanna Kamma say?” Ari: “Something good! I’m sure of it!”), to completely outrageous (“Rebbi! It’s Eliyahu’s birthday today!” And yes, he actually burst into the Happy Birthday song). Rabbi Green had had a number of conversations with both Ari and his parents. Everyone was on the same page — including Ari. Ari wanted to participate productively in class. He didn’t want to be disruptive and certainly not dis-
of serious focus filled the room. The intensity was palpable. They then shifted into one of their favorite classroom routines — the Chazarah Game. The class split into four groups. Every member of a team needed to know the answer to a given question. Today’s game was being played for exceptionally high stakes. The winner was going to be awarded one hundred points on their team’s “Perek Perfection Point Placement Pattern.” These points counted toward a major award: The World “Gemara Kup.” The excitement in the room was electric. Suddenly, this dream scenario was rudely interrupted. The door burst open, announcing Ari’s return from the restroom. Apparently, it was not a loud enough announcement for Ari. This was: “Yode-LAY-HU!” Ari attempted to conclude his “yodel” with a flourish. The thin, crackling sound of his voice made it sound more like a famous breakfast

More than the frustration of the disruptions in class — which, after all, were only sporadic — Rabbi Green worried about Ari’s future. Ari’s intellectual ability deserved to be cultivated. But his behavior patterns and work ethic could potentially sabotage his opportunities. How could such a talented young man miss out on fulfilling his potential? How would he even get accepted to a high school that could cater to his sharp intellect? And once he did, how would he manage when he got there? Rabbi Green was teaching a particularly difficult point in the Gemara. It required careful attention to a number of details and involved a logical sequence of several steps. Nevertheless, the class was following with rapt attention. Rabbi Green’s warmth and encouragement, as well as his ability to identify and explain clear and discrete steps, engaged even the more intellectually challenged students. It was still difficult for them, but they were working hard to follow. A sense

cereal. Raucous laughter overtook the room. A conference took place that very evening. It could simply wait no longer. Rabbi Green, Ari, the Steins — Ari’s parents, Rabbi Gold — the principal, and Dr. Levine — the school psychologist, were all present. Rabbi Green did his best to be as gentle as possible while explaining the frustrating behaviors that Ari had been exhibiting. Ari fidgeted in his seat restlessly, mostly looking at the floor. His expression appeared somber and remorseful. Mrs. Stein sat beside him, occasionally caressing his hand or stroking his hair. She listened attentively, her facial expression indicating warmth, consideration and concern. Mr. Stein sat at her other side, fidgeting restlessly in his seat in a way that almost mirrored Ari’s movements. When Rabbi Green was done, Mrs. Stein nodded politely and apologized profusely. Mr. Stein nodded absentmindedly, and said some form of muffled apology. He looked over at Ari, checked his phone, and resumed his original fidgeting. Rabbi Gold then mentioned that Ari had ADHD, wondering aloud if that was a factor. Ari was not on medication. The

side effects had been too unpleasant. “It could be,” Dr. Levine remarked. “How so?” asked Rabbi Green. “It may explain why Ari has trouble paying attention for long, but how would it explain the loud interruptions at particularly inappropriate times? And some of these jokes are well below his age level. And what about the times that he actually did his homework and just forgot to bring it in?” Mr. and Mrs. Stein looked at one another, a knowing expression on both faces. Mr. Stein suddenly looked a lot more interested. They looked toward Dr. Levine. So did Rabbi Gold. Dr. Levine went on to explain. “The well-known symptoms of ADHD are, as you mentioned, Rabbi Green, hyperactivity and erratic attention. However, there are many other behaviors that are functions of ADHD as well. Immaturity, impulsivity and trouble with executive function are all behaviors that can be caused by ADHD.” Rabbi Gold nodded thoughtfully. Rabbi Green was quiet, as he began to turn over ideas in his mind. He looked at Rabbi Gold, then at Dr. Levine. “I’ve taught talmidim with ADHD before,” Rabbi Green said thoughtfully, “but never knew about these factors. How can I find out more? This could be a game-changer for me!” Rabbi Gold pointed to a section on a nearby bookshelf. “There are some excellent books there. You can thank Dr. Levine for telling me about them.” “This gives me an idea,” Mr. Stein interjected. “Maybe it’s time for Ari to start working with my ADHD coach?” All eyes suddenly focused on Mr. Stein. “What?” he remarked, feigning indignation. “ADHD is hereditary! You didn’t think he got it from Chani, did you?!” He and Mrs. Stein smiled at each other. Everyone chuckled. He continued, “I wasn’t sure if Ari is ready for coaching, but maybe it’s time?” They all turned to Ari, who smiled mischievously. “I’m ready to coach, Tatty, but my prices are kind of steep...” The room erupted with laughter. Rabbi Green didn’t sleep much that night either, as he skimmed
through the stack of books on ADHD he had borrowed from Rabbi Gold. He read through one in its entirety — and by the time morning came, he was totally on board, committed to do what it takes to see Ari succeed. His coffee drinking experience the next morning wasn’t impacted. He was so absorbed, he didn’t even notice that the urn was broken and the water was ice cold. Rabbi Green, Ari, and Mr. Stein’s coach — who was now Ari’s coach, too — worked out routines for Ari to be less disruptive in class and hand in assignments on time. It took a number of weeks, and lots of trial and error, but they eventually got it right. Ari was never in class for more than fifteen minutes without a break, and breaks were used for activities that would improve brain function: exercise, fresh air, and even mindfulness exercises. Additionally, Ari began to post a checklist on the inside of the front door of his room reminding him which supplies he needed to pack for school every day (homework, lunch, and so on). The checklist was always written on paper of a bright color, and changed weekly (he set an alarm reminding him when to do so) so it would continue to catch his attention. There were certainly days that demonstrated flaws in the plan, but armed with the knowledge that it was ADHD and not malicious behavior, Rabbi Green exercised patience and understanding (though it was not always easy). He even took the liberty of laughing at some of Ari’s humorous antics. Ari’s learning was able to flourish. He was accepted into the high school of his choice, and today is a rosh yeshivah in Eretz Yisroel. Just kidding. He’s a very nice kid learning well in an excellent yeshivah high school. He’s still occasionally in touch with his coach, and in regular contact with Rabbi Green. They are all proud of how far he has come, and feel confident that he’s on track to achieve his potential. Rabbi Shmuel Reich is a rebbi at Yeshiva Ohr Reuven and an ADHD coach in private practice. He can be reached at rsreichadhdcoach@gmail. com, or by phone at 646-262-8257.

The Movement Theory Remember the Fidget Spinner?
Kids with ADHD are often exhorted:
Back in May 2017, every kid had one. On the street, in stores and in classrooms, you’d see kids twiddling and whirling these threepronged plastic toys between their fingers. In fact, every one of Amazon’s top ten bestselling toys that season was some kind of hand-held knickknack that could be twirled.
Look at me while I talk to you!
Some therapists and scientists believe that the fidget spinner was more than just a passing fad. Is something deeper spinning beneath that riveting, twirling toy? THE CLAIM:
Sit still!
Don’t do two things at once! What such parents, teachers or instructors might not realize is that these commands are often counterproductive. With sensory stimulation, that child might just be able to listen better. Fiddling with something gets the mind working, allowing the child to create, express and learn. This follows the theory that movement is critical for cognitive growth, because it exercises both parts of the brain simultaneously. While it has been proven with full body workouts — such as pedaling a stationary bike or bouncing on a large movement ball while learning — there isn’t enough research to prove the same for lesser movement. This keeps experts speculating the effectiveness of hand-held fidget items. Talk about a spinning controversy…
In the Classroom
Fidget toys are an antidote for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. They may be the solution for children (and adults) with anxiety or autism. And, unmistakably, they calm those with sensory issues.
Should spinners and other fidget toys be allowed in the classroom?
THE RATIONALE:
You know that student who is constantly tapping his foot, rummaging through her desk or taking a drink for the hundredth time during the lesson? Allowing this student to keep such an object at hand might just stop her from being so restless.
Tactile toys release stress and provide a pleasing sensory experience. They can thus be more aptly labeled as “tools” that prove beneficial for self-regulation. The continuous movement promotes focus, attention and active listening, while radiating relaxation.
Many teachers find them annoying. They feel that fidget toys distract rather than improve concentration. In response, fidget toys have largely been banned at schools. Still, experts posit that such toys — or tools — should remain in some kids’ pencil cases.
The key is finding the right kind of fidget toy. It must be one that you don’t need to think about while using. Most importantly, it must be a toy that doesn’t require hand-eye coordination.
CLASSROOMFRIENDLY • Putty • Stress balls • Fidget cubes NOT FOR SCHOOL • Fidget spinners • Noisy toys • Thinking toys
In a study on stress balls, sixth graders reported that their “attitude, attention, writing abilities and peer interaction improved,” when they toyed with them during the lesson. 94 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 14, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

Adults, too! Perhaps you’ll find it easier to relate to that restless child who needs to sit behind a desk from eight to four when putting it in this perspective… Are you the kind who dreads sitting in on long meetings? Do you feel inhibited beginning a lengthier task that won’t allow you to walk over to the coffee machine every fifteen minutes? You’re in good company! ADHD notwithstanding, many adults don’t have the luxury of long-period concentration spans coming easily either.
Break that habit! What may seem like a nasty habit — tapping your fingers, biting your nails, picking at dry skin — may actually be your individual form of fidgeting. Try fidget toys to replace unwanted inclinations!
Toying the Benefits
Do You Fidget? You might find yourself clicking your ballpoint pen again and again or flipping a paper clip in and out in continuous motion. These unofficial fidget items are actually helpful for keeping the right frame of mind. Many employees find that keeping a stress ball or other adult-appropriate fidget item on hand helps them keep focused and be more productive.
• Keep focused.
• Release stress.
• Be attentive.
• Soothe anxiety.
• Retain knowledge. Fidget toys can also help break bad habits such as nail biting!
Consciously or Subconsciously: Nearly everyone fidgets with something — to some extent! Great Fidget Toy Ideas Fidget Spinner: There are so many tricks these fun spinners can accomplish. Just keep it at home if you don’t want your teacher confiscating it!
Bouncy Bands: No more tapping feet or kicking desk legs with this “footrest.” Reportedly, kids can focus better and remain on task longer. Best part is — teachers love it too!
Tangles: Join the pieces together in any shape, then take apart and redo over and over. (Easy to hide in your hand or inside your desk!)
Fidget Cube: Each of the six sides of this cube provides another fidgeting marvel. Use it while studying or listening to a lesson.
Silly Putty: An old-time classic, this “theraputtic” fidget toy is cheap and builds fine motor skills.
Chew Stixx: Erase the pencil-chewing habit with these oral penciltopper fidgets. No worries, they’re dishwasher friendly.
Ziggy Pasta: These colorful “noodles” slip through your fingers, providing a sensory sensation! They don’t disturb teachers because they’re noiseless, and the ultrasoothing effect keeps students calm and under control.
