I was delighted to see your cover page featuring this important topic as well as several articles devoted to ADHD from differing perspectives throughout the issue, especially since the month of October, whether The Boro Park View staff realized it or not, is National ADHD Awareness Month. As an ADHD coach in the frum community, one of my personal goals is to try to increase ADHD awareness and knowledge. Unfortunately, there is still a lot of ignorance, misinformation and stigma surrounding ADHD. Every article, informational webinar, or even one-on-one conversation can build greater awareness and understanding. Thank you for furthering that goal! The average person’s understanding of ADHD is often limited to the boy who struggles to sit still in class, blurts inappropriate comments, and is generally disruptive. However, ADHD does not discriminate between boys and girls, but affects both in equal proportion. In addition, contrary to popular belief, most children with ADHD carry their symptoms into adulthood. The environment where their symptoms impact them may shift from school to career and family life, but the core of their struggle remains unchanged. Women and girls with ADHD and their unique struggles are widely overlooked since their symptoms aren’t as obvious as their male counterparts. Many of my clients express frustration that even professionals can dismiss their symptoms or misdiagnose them with depression and/or anxiety, which in many cases exist only as a result of their untreated ADHD. Your articles will, b’ezras Hashem, be a catalyst for those who struggle silently without understanding why, to seek diagnosis and treatment. A diagnosis alone can be so validating. When someone with ADHD learns there is a neurobiological basis for their symptoms, The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. Please email comments@thebpview.com.

IN SEARCH OF ADHD RESOURCES (Re: Energy Unleashed: Issue 55) I really appreciated your articles about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. I have a child with ADHD whom I am really struggling with, and the articles so aptly described him. I can really use some guidance and support, and I’m reaching out to your readers for information about support groups or other resources that can help parents or guardians faced with this challenge. Additionally, is there perhaps someone who knows of a place where a kid like mine can go to let off some steam, now that our options are so limited due to the current situation? Thank you, A Reader

INBOX we had to do was go. We especially loved the airport, and my children are not stopping to talk about this trip. Even with the limited planes going and coming right now, they claim that they wouldn’t have wanted to go anywhere else. In their words, “This was the best!” Thank you, The Goldsteins

THE NUTS CONVERSATION, CONTINUED (Re: Table of Tradition, Issues 53–55) I’d like to chime in to the ongoing conversation regarding the minhagim surrounding nut consumption during the Yamim Noraim. Unfortunately, it seems there is a lot of confusion out there about this, and it’s a shame that people are confident enough with their mistakes to call the minhagim of others “mistakes.” There are various sources for the many minhagim that people have, and they include refraining from eating almonds and all other nuts as well. (There are even those who cite sources — like the Mateh Efraim — for avoiding peanuts!) The reasons brought down don’t only refer to the gematria of chet; in the same Rema (siman 583) it says these foods cause “kicha v’nia,” which disturbs tefillah. In fact, the Shulchan Aruch Harav only brings the second reason and says it includes all nuts, not only egozim. As an aside, I find it disconcerting that people use a family magazine as a forum to argue about halachos and minhagim. It would be unfortunate if any reader veers away from their family minhag as a result of something they read and misunderstood. Thank you for a wonderful magazine, S.P.

RE: THEIR TIME TO LEARN (Inbox, Issues 53–55) I read with interest the ongoing conversation on the topic of our daughters and the amount of time they get off from school. I think it’s fair to point out that not all schools follow the same calendar. My nieces, who attend various other schools, don’t have nearly as many days off as my daughters do. My girls regularly have two days off before every yom tov as well as almost all of Chanukah, and I have no idea why. I love being with my children and giving them a great time, and my kids love being home as well, but that’s not the point. The issue for me is as follows: 1. This year we all had beyond a fair or reasonable amount of days with the children home. Now can we please utilize every single viable day for school and learning? We have no idea what the future holds; let’s maximize the time and opportunity. 2. Many mothers, myself included, work, forcing us to scramble to make arrangements for the children or leave them home alone, conditions permitting. None of us can take so many days off work without consequence. And in

38 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 21, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

my case, where I work from home, I can’t begin to tell you how stressful it is to be home with the children but not present for them. It’s not right to them or to myself. So I wonder why there is no minimum amount of days per year that schools should aim to hit, like back when I went to school (in the ‘90s). If we had more than two snow days in the winter, they’d shorten our midwinter vacation. Let’s have some standards. And as for the exhausted mom who relies on her middle school girls for help, I feel for you. Besides, as mothers, I think it’s fair to say that we’re all chronically exhausted. Best wishes to all, S.R.

THE PERFECT ENDING (Re: In Honor of the Ushpizin, Issue 53) Thank you so much for an amazing magazine as well as an amazing food section. We tried the Strawberry Crumble Dessert, and it was a real success! Keep those recipes coming! Bella

AND THE CROWD WAS PLEASED (Re: Meats Fit for Royalty, Issue 51) You have absolutely the best recipes out there! I tried the mushroom French roast, and the results were way beyond my expectations. When Rivky Friedman claimed that it would be a crowd pleaser, I did not expect it to be exactly that. The adults and kids (including the ones who never touch meat) were definitely very pleased with this delicious roast! Sincerely, C.F.

YOUR VOICE WHAT TELETHERAPY MEANS TO ME I am a therapist who is currently unable to work in the red zone zip codes, leaving me without a job and no income. If your child has a therapist of any kind, please do not abandon her now. A therapist works with your child on a steady basis and is always there to help your child though their challenges. Now is a time when you can show appreciation by scheduling phone sessions. Phone sessions may be somewhat less productive than in-person sessions, but you will be providing a fellow mother with an income at almost no expense to you. A round of applause to every single mother who implements this! Your Child’s Therapist

Do you know Chany? She hands in perfect test papers, but I never hear her voice. When others try to engage her, she barely responds. Can she make it?

It’s only a mask. The real Chany is confident and expressive. I can picture her teaching hundreds of students, sought out for her depth, insight, and wise counsel.

Meet Ayala. Pretty and perceptive, with impeccable taste. She always has something to complain about. It’s so hard to make her happy.

That’s my Yitzy.

About Menachem.

He’s charming, charismatic —and when he tells a story, he tends to embellish it. An expert at fudging the facts. Will he ever be trustworthy?

Personable, with a great sense of humor. He goes through the motions (barely), but seems indifferent to Yiddishkeit. I worry for him.

It’s just a disguise.

I know Menachem. He’s authentic, and possesses much emotional depth and warmth. He davens with passion and real connection.

Yitzy is an ish emes, a person with inner integrity and dignity. He can be trusted with people’s privacy, money, and lives.

WEEK 5:

LONG LIVES, LONG KNIVES Walking into a beis knesses? What are you carrying with you? The place you are entering is a mikdash me’at, a miniature Beis Hamikdash. The actual Beis Hamikdash has a number of restrictions on what may be worn or brought inside. These include restrictions on wearing shoes, carrying a wallet and more. A beis knesses, however, carries a lower dose of kedusha, and has fewer regulations, as evidenced by our wearing shoes. One halacha does remain in force: One may not bring knives, nor any other potentially lethal items, into the beis knesses. What’s the understanding behind this restriction? Chazal provide us with a basic concept: Things that aid longevity aren’t meant to go together with things that cut life short. Don’t bring a gun to the doctor’s office. This concept first appears in regard to the mizbei’ach. We are told that the stones used in its construction could not be cut to size with metal implements. The mizbei’ach, the place a Yid comes to express a desire to turn over a new leaf, to draw close to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, carries the power to refresh and add years to a person’s life. Metal tools, with potential connections to murder, may not be used. Drawing on this, we are told that knives should not be on one’s table during Birchas Hamazon. When utilized properly, a person’s table takes on the role of a mizbei’ach, with the meal in the role of a korban; therefore, tools

A beis knesses is a bastion of tefillah, providing connection between a person and Hakadosh Baruch Hu — a connection that brings a person additional life. of lethality are not welcome. This ideal holds true in the beis knesses as well. A beis knesses is a bastion of tefillah, providing connection between a person and Hakadosh Baruch Hu — a connection that brings a person additional life. Similarly, a beis midrash is a home for the ultimate source of longevity: Torah study. These places grant life. Weapons, or anything bearing a connotation of lethality, are not allowed.[1] Some basic guidelines:

• Although it is preferable to avoid bringing these items in altogether, only exposed items are actually prohibited.[2] If the item in question is covered by a jacket, tallis or something else, entry would be allowed. Placing a weapon in its natural cover, such as folding a switchblade into its handle or placing a gun in its holster, would presumably not qualify as covering it.

every knife is forbidden. It seems that the emphasis is on something considered dangerous, such as larger knives that can conceivably be used as weapons, as opposed to simple tableware, which would be permitted. In this vein, it is possible that a pocket knife-screwdriver-corkscrew type of device would be permitted (although regardless, it could easily be folded and pocketed to avoid any issue).

• The halacha refers clearly to entry to a beis knesses or beis midrash, irrespective of whether one is engaging in tefillah or Torah study. Accordingly, there is no restriction on carrying a weapon when engaged in tefillah or Torah study if one is not within an actual beis knesses or beis midrash. Entry into hallways and side rooms adjacent to the actual beis knesses is permitted as well, as these locations do not bear kedushas beis knesses.

• These items may be brought in for valid use within the beis knesses. For example, a razor blade used in the binding of seforim may be brought in for the purpose of seforim repair. Similarly, any saws or tools may be brought in when being used for repairs.

By emphasizing lethality as opposed to metal, the Shulchan Aruch appears to rule that all knives and similar items would be prohibited, regardless of whether they are metal, ceramic or other.

• The Shulchan Aruch specifies that “sakin aroch — a long knife” is what is prohibited.[3] The implication is that not every piece of metal nor even

Suppose one is carrying a weapon, in a scenario where there is no feasible safe place to leave it. The time for tefillah is fast approaching, and the only minyan is within a beis knesses. Indeed, this scenario occurs on a daily basis in Eretz

IN SUMMATION: 1. Weapons — or any item of lethality, such as knives, switchblades and so on — may not be brought into a beis knesses or beis midrash, unless they (and their usual covers, such as holsters) are concealed. 2. If the item is necessary for use in the beis knesses, it may be brought in. It is questionable if one may enter to join a minyan while carrying an exposed weapon.

Yisroel. What should one do? If a valid security concern exists, this would be a halachically acceptable rationale for bringing the weapon into the beis knesses. This validation, however, generally does not apply in most scenarios, as even where a sufficiently significant level of risk exists, it is almost universally from a potential threat emanating from outside the beis knesses, not from within. Any safety precautions could just as effectively be employed at the entrance to the beis knesses, outside the main room. As such, this would not provide sufficient justification for bringing weapons within the actual beis knesses. If the weapon carried is a handgun, switchblade or something small, the simplest solution would be to conceal the weapon under one’s jacket or tallis, thus allowing one to enter the beis knesses. If this is not possible, the best solution would be to stand outside the main room of the beis knesses, with a line of vision through an open door or window to the minyan within. In this case, as one has not entered the actual beis knesses, there is no issue with the weapon. As far as the minyan element is concerned, one is in fact considered to be part of the minyan as long as he can see some of the ten men gathered within. Though this is not the most ideal setup, as one is standing in a different domain, it would satisfy the halachic requirement. As such, the obligation to daven with a minyan has been met while the prohibition of bringing a weapon into a beis knesses has not been violated. It is worth noting that the ezras nashim of a beis knesses very often does not possess the full-fledged kedusha of a beis knesses, and would also provide a solution. (This would, however, depend on the specific set-up of the ezras nashim, which we will cover in a future article, b’ezras Hashem.) If one cannot conceal the weapon and does not have the place or ability to stand outside the beis knesses with a line of vision to people within, there is a dispute among the later poskim whether to remain outside and daven without a minyan, or to bring in the weapon and daven with a minyan.[4] Rabbi Elias is a maggid shiur at the Yeshiva Gedola of Hampstead in Montreal, Canada. [1] An interesting aside: A number of years ago, I queried Rav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, as I had heard that his father, the Steipler, zt”l, had a personal practice to refrain from placing any metal object, such as a pen, directly on a sefer. Rav Chaim responded that his father had indeed been quite careful about this, as an extension of the abovementioned concept.

With Anger Mounting About Selective COVID-19 Enforcement, Cuomo Threatens to Freeze State Funding Refusing to back down from his latest orders that have kept yeshivos, shuls and non-essential businesses shuttered in areas designated as COVID-19 red zones, Governor Andrew Cuomo warned that he will freeze state funding to non-compliant local governments and yeshivos. Describing the problem as “an ultra-Orthodox” one primarily occurring in Brooklyn, Orange and Rockland counties, Cuomo put local governments on notice that failure to close schools and looking away from religious gatherings would result in the loss of state dollars. The governor also made the same threat to schools in red zones and warned that those who have already been found to be in violation will have their funding pulled pending investigation. Cuomo said that the decision to resort to punitive financial consequences was not an easy one. “I don’t know how else to get them to do the enforcement they need to do,” said Cuomo. “So, hopefully that will motivate them, because nothing else I have done has motivated them — not my rapier wit, not my sense of humor, not my guilt, not my blame, not my admonition, and not my pleas. Maybe money works.” Having refined last spring’s regional approach to target clusters, Cuomo has said that his color-coded zones were designated by factors including population density and COVID-19 infection rates. New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker acknowledged in a legal brief that no specific threshold has been set defining when an area should be declared a red, orange or yellow zone, reported Boro Park 24. Cuomo has also said that his more precise microcluster approach could be used to target individual blocks within neighborhoods, adding that he would not be able to release that data because it is so specific that it could violate privacy

48 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 21, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

regulations. As of Sunday afternoon, Cuomo’s orders withstood several legal challenges, while others have yet to be heard and still more have been filed. A lawsuit filed by three Monsey rabbis last week charged Cuomo with constitutional violations, noting that less restrictive requirements that did not infringe upon religious liberties would have met CDC guidelines. Among the plaintiffs in the suit was Rabbi Chaim Leibish Rottenberg, who received a personal visit from Cuomo after last Chanukah’s terrifying machete attack in his home. Ironically, Rabbi Rottenberg gave the invocation at last year’s State of the State address in Albany, where he praised the governor as a friend of the local community and prayed that Cuomo be guided to eradicate hate and to promote the values of “tolerance and appreciation.” Cuomo has come under fire from various sources for targeting the Jewish community, with former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich asking on Twitter, “Why is Cuomo engaged in anti-Semitic language attacking the Jewish community? This is very dangerous.” An op-ed that appeared in the Washington Examiner called the governor out for his refusal to work with Jewish community leaders to curb the virus while simultaneously using fear to promote anti-Semitism. “Fear is a terrible way to make policy,” said attorney Ron Coleman, who is representing the Monsey rabbis who have filed suit against Cuomo and the state. “It’s an even worse way to violate the constitution.” A scathing video released by Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein on Sunday afternoon blasted both Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio for engaging in a contest of egos that has led New York City into a downward spiral. “We have seen and continue to see the terrible effects of this baseless, self-centered fight,” said Eichenstein, adding, “By the way, there’s so much they could learn from how nicely my two-year-old gets along with my six-year-old.” Eichenstein also slammed Cuomo for making COVID-19 an Orthodox problem, a viewpoint that has no scientific basis but has been spread on the national stage, resulting in an uptick in anti-Semitism. “Mr. Governor, maybe it’s time to take a real long look in the mirror,” observed Eichenstein. “While you and the mayor were busy trying to upstage each other with conflicting information back in March, we shut down our synagogues and our schools. We do follow the rules. Perhaps you are unaware of the basic facts, given that you only visit our community once every four years, prior to your reelection, and even then it’s a tightly scripted visit.” Saying that the government metrics represent only a partial picture, noting that most testing was done prior to the yomim tovim when only those who were ill went for testing, the Department of Health doesn’t believe that transmissions in our large families are re-

lated to schools or small businesses. Eichenstein called on the community to wear a mask, get tested and to practice social distancing whenever possible. “We have faced many hardships in our community,” said Eichenstein. “With Hashem’s help, we will get through this one as well, together.” An urgent announcement circulated by representatives of Boro Park mosdos called on every man and woman in the community to be tested for COVID-19 in light of the latest uptick. Bearing the names of Rabbi Asher Anshel Eckstein of Belz, shlit”a, Rabbi Baruch Avrohom Tzvi Horowitz of Bobov, shlit”a, Rabbi Dovid Moshe Twerski of Rachmastrivka, shlit”a, Rabbi Chaim Dovid Katz of Satmar, shlit”a, Rabbi Chaim Meir Hager of Viznitz, shlit”a, Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Tyrnauer of Toras Chaim Viznitz, shlit”a, Rabbi Yehoshua Rubin of Bobov-45, shlit”a, Rabbi Levi Yitzchok Greenwald of Pupa, shlit”a, Rabbi Moshe Friedman of Satmar, shlit”a, Rabbi Nachman Yechiel Michel Steinmetz of Skver, shlit”a, Rabbi Tzvi Halevi Halpern of Vien, shlit”a, and Rabbi Shraga Hager of Kossov, shlit”a, the call to action included an expression of support to those who have spent sleepless nights addressing the ongoing problem as well as a tefillah for the pandemic to come to an end. “And we pray to the Healer of all man to remove this plague from our midst permanently; to heal those who are ill; to preserve the health of those who are well; and that this plague not interfere with the education of our sons and daughters, our shuls, our yeshivos and our livelihoods, and that government should see us in a positive light, until the coming of Moshiach, speedily in our times.”

Baby Steps Toward a Reconciliation as Cuomo Takes Phone Call With Rabbis A glimmer of hope emerged Sunday night as Governor Andrew Cuomo spoke with Jewish community leaders on a conference call in an effort to ease the tensions that cropped up after the state imposed harsh COVID-related lockdowns in Flatbush, Boro Park, Kew Gardens, Kew Gardens Hills, Monsey and Kiryas Joel during chol hamoed. Both sides did their best to extend the figurative olive branch during the conciliatory call, referencing the longstanding relationship between Cuomo, his father and the Jewish community, and discussing mutually agreeable methods of moving ahead. Multiple rabbis representing various segments of the Jewish community participated in the call, with three permitted to ask questions that were approved in advance by the Cuomo team. Askanim from Boro Park who were invited to take part in the call declined after being muted during an early October call with Cuomo, saying they preferred a face-

to-face meeting with the governor, which sources said could take place this week. While Williamsburg was spared the shul shutdowns over Simchas Torah since it remained outside the state’s red, yellow and orange COVID-19 zones, Rabbi David Niederman, executive director of UJO of Williamsburg, expressed his concerns about Cuomo’s recent statements and executive actions that were based on misinformation circulated by the media. Noting that Monday night’s Satmar wedding was incorrectly reputed to have 10,000 guests and that the media pounced upon a nonexistent protest in Williamsburg, Rabbi Niederman expressed his opinion that it would be prudent for the governor to confirm the facts before responding to potentially sensationalized media reports. While Cuomo attempted to defend himself by saying it would be difficult to challenge statements presented by the media as facts, he voiced his agreement with Rabbi Niederman’s assessment and offered to work with a team from the Jewish community to reduce the spread of COVID-19 as soon as possible. Rabbi Yaakov Bender, menahel of Yeshiva Darchei Torah in Far Rockaway, asked Cuomo to appreciate the Jewish community’s diversity and to understand that despite the latest lockdowns, he has many staunch supporters. He told the governor that while there are those who refuse to wear masks and abide by social distancing, countless Yidden are carefully adhering to all COVID-19 protocols. Urging the governor to reevaluate the numbers in Far Rockaway, Rabbi Bender emphasized the importance of reopening schools, noting that the vast majority of his talmidim come from homes where both their parents work, a situation that is fraught with potential pitfalls. “Governor, you’ve got to help us. We can’t wait,” said Rabbi Bender. “It’s a terrible thing. We need your help, Governor, because we love you.” New Square Mayor Izzy Spitzer acknowledged the difficulties of the ongoing lockdown, particularly in light of the warm relationship the Jewish community has always shared with Cuomo. “It’s something we never would [have] expected, to have [gotten] to such a stage, to have conversations and to have to prove to each other the friendship and the loyalty and everything else,” said Spitzer. “Governor, one thing I can say. Keep up the relationship with us … Let’s sit together, and I’m sure in a very, very short time we’ll be able to get over it together. We’re in it together, Governor. Keep up your good work; let’s do it right away.” Cuomo concluded the call with a promise to follow up within 24 hours and with a beacon of hope, both about the pandemic and about his fractured relationship with the Jewish community: “We’re getting close,” said Cuomo. “I believe there’s going to

COVID-19 Uptick Has Maimonides Limiting Visitations Patient visitation policies at Maimonides Medical Center have been dramatically scaled back by the recent rise in confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Maimonides first began allowing visitors after the initial wave of the pandemic in late May under a pilot program that allowed two visitors per day. The hospital further expanded its visitation policies in August, but as of October 12, patients will be limited to a single visitor per day between 1 and 7 p.m. throughout the week and 2 to 8 p.m. on Shabbos, with stays not to exceed four hours. All visitors are required to wear PPE and remain in the patients’ rooms during their visits and to abide by the hospital’s policies on hand-washing and temperature and symptom checks. Maimonides warned that it will have a zero tolerance policy in place through the entire hospital and that those who fail to adhere to the guidelines will be asked to leave immediately and risk being banned from future visits.

While many restaurants in New York’s COVID-19 hot spots remain closed under Governor Andrew Cuomo’s latest orders, they will be allowed to continue serving clients outdoors once those regulations have been lifted under a plan announced by Mayor Bill de Blasio that will make outdoor dining the new reality in the five boroughs. The city unveiled its plans for outdoor eateries last week, reported Eater New York, which included detailed guidance on the use of propane, gas-fueled and electric heaters. Restaurants will need to file an attestation form with the FDNY in order to be authorized to use heaters. At least one employee will also need to be certified in use of the heaters by the FDNY, and a separate permit will be required to store propane containers. Restaurants have been waiting for guidance on how to heat their outdoor space for several weeks. As the weather has grown colder, some have found creative ways to deal with decreasing temperatures, with one Upper West Side eatery selling branded sweatshirts and another in Prospect Heights offering blankets to chilled patrons upon request.

Recap: Blumi and Elisheva have a warm conversation in which Elisheva tells Blumi about her father’s past and the fact that despite his efforts, he was never able to obtain any information about his identity. “Where’s Mommy?” Miri closed the door to her parents’ house behind her, and smiled as her younger brothers fell upon their nephew. “Mommy’s on the phone with her millionaire,” Chani said, calmly rescuing the baby from her younger brothers’ hands. “With whom?” “She has a new friend from England,” Esti explained. “She calls here like twice a day. Don’t ask. They realized that they both went to school in Zichron Meir as girls, but that this Blumi was a grade older than Mommy. But they still share childhood memories of Bnei Brak, school and all kinds of ancient contests they had back then — that type of thing. As if Mommy is bored and needs a new way to fill her time.” “Twice a day?” The description amused Miri. “About. Okay, maybe there are days when it’s only once. But trust me, they speak often enough!” “What does she call Mommy about? She’s the one from the silver yad, right?” “Yes. They are sponsoring the seudah for the hachnasas sefer Torah, and pekelach for the kids. She calls Mommy to ask her about every little thing — first

course, dessert, what to put into the pekelach, what kind of torches they’ll distribute to the kids, and what kind of van they should rent for the parade.” “Van?” Miri opened the fridge, looking for something cold to drink. “Yes, a van with lights! And a crown!” Yitzy bounced around her, and Bentzy and Shloimy started dancing around the table. “Shmuely also wants to dance!” Uncle Yitzy said. “He’ll watch you from here.” Miri smiled at her son who was still being firmly held by his responsible aunt. “Nu, sing some hachnasas sefer Torah songs so he should get familiar with them already!” Under the cover of the singing-cum-shrieking, as the little ones began dancing boisterously in front of Shmuely, she leaned over to Chani and asked, “Is this millionaire lady connected somehow to the millionaire man from Australia? Or this apartment? Or both?” “Of course not!” Chani looked at her in surprise. “Only the yad was from her. I mean, it is hers. She didn’t even mean to give it to us. And Binyamin told me that he wrote an apology letter, and that Mommy and Tatty faxed it over to her.”

Miri nodded, her expression inscrutable. She hadn’t yet met Binyamin since she’d revealed his secret to their mother. She had no idea what he was feeling toward her. “Because he was supposed to take care of it for her, but instead he lost it.” Eleven-yearold Esti played with the knob of the corner cabinet. “Not that I really understand what exactly happened… although I guess it’s not my business anyway. But she’s not connected to any of the other new things. This house is from the U’shemartem auction, and the millionaire is from Australia.” “Right,” Chani said. “And this Blumi is from England. So I can’t see how any of these things would be connected.” “So how much time do they spend talking to each other?” Miri asked. “How much longer will this phone call take?” “No way to know. Sometimes forty-five minutes.” Esti was very encouraging. “But sometimes it only takes ten minutes.” Chani smiled at her nephew. “So basically, it’s an average of twenty-seven and a half minutes.” She glanced at the clock. “Now it’s about twenty-two minutes since she called. I checked. So you have a good chance that in about five minutes, Mommy will be all yours.” *****

New York, 5709/1949 “Are you not sleeping, Ulush?” Janek looked at the clock. “That’s a shame, because Surah finally fell asleep… What are you doing there?” “Writing letters.” “To Gustav and Edo?” “Who else do I have to write to, if not them?” She folded the two papers and slid them into the envelopes she had prepared. “What did you write about in your letters?” “I told them a bit about America, the streets, the people…”

56 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 21, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

“I hope you didn’t describe too much.” The edges of his eyes twitched. “It would be a shame if you were to tempt them to come to America and prevent them from realizing that dream.” “I don’t think my descriptions would make anyone want to

Edo, on the other hand, had a few new friends that he had made in the orphanage. But that was not the only reason why Gustav set out on his trip. The paper from Edo’s mother, which had been lost, galvanized him to find his friend. The time had

I’m not worried.” He fingered the edge of his blanket. “And if I am worried about someone, it’s you. When things calm down there, would you want to travel to Eretz Yisroel to see how they’re doing?” “Very much,” she said. “But I know how vague ‘when things calm down’ really is.” “Because the situation there really is not clear,” Janek said simply. “I’m sorry, Ulush. I also love Gustav and Edo. I also put myself at risk for them and forged a bond with them. But since they are no longer in danger, I don’t think it would be wise on our part to do all kinds of things just because we miss them. True, the war is over, but the Arabs are still very unsettled.” “I’m not doing all kinds of things,” she replied. “I just wrote them letters, and I gave each one the other’s address. At the very least, they should be together. Who do they have in Eretz Yisroel besides one another?” *****

Eretz Yisroel, 5709/1949 Gustav really had no one.

long come for him to do this. He left the orphanage in Yerushalayim early one morning, without telling anyone. He arrived in Bnei Brak late that afternoon. He walked slowly through the streets, trying to find the address that Ulush had sent him, without asking anyone for help. Finally, he stood in front of the white building and squinted. Yerushalayim was nicer. Perhaps Edo would want to come back with him? No, he would probably want to go to his uncles and grow up there, with them. What about the fact that the paper, with his uncles’ names on it, had disappeared? It didn’t matter. It would be enough for the group that searched for people’s relatives to announce that a child by the name of Yosef Ludmir, from Petrzalka Street in Bratislava, was looking for his uncles. There was no one who had relatives from Europe who didn’t listen out to hear if they had been saved. “Edo?” The man with the short gray beard thought for a moment. “We don’t have a boy by that name here. Maybe he has a new name, a Jewish name?” “I don’t know,” Gustav said desperately. “In Europe we called him Edo. Maybe I can go from room to room to look for him? Even though it’s been

more than a year since we were together, I will certainly recognize him. For sure.” “The children aren’t here right now; they went to pick fruits in the orchard,” the man said gently. “Maybe you’d like to go to the dining room in the meantime? I’ll ask the cook for a bowl of soup for you. They’ll be back soon for supper.” It was tempting, and he was very hungry. “All right,” Gustav said quietly. “Thank you.” The soup arrived a few minutes later, fresh and steaming. It didn’t have as many vegetables as the soup in the Yerushalayim orphanage had, but it was still very tasty. He wondered what kind of food Edo usually got here; he knew it was nothing compared to what he would get when he would meet his relatives. Suddenly he heard voices from outside coming into the large dining room. Gustav leaped to his feet, abandoning his spoon. None of the boys had entered yet, but Edo had suddenly become a very real thing instead of someone who belonged to his memories of the war and the postwar period, beginning from that night when he had asked Theodore to please take the little boy in, because his mother was crying so much… Gustav listened closely to the noise of the children outside. There was a cacophony of voices, running footsteps, friendly calls… but there was no Edo among any of the names he heard. Maybe Edo really wasn’t here, and Ulush had just mixed up the address? Okay, it was called Batei Avot, but who said there wasn’t another place with a similar name? He retreated to the wall. But suddenly… Suddenly he saw Edo. It was him: short and smiling, running with two big oranges in his hands, hurrying along with the other children to… what was there in the corner? A box? Yes. They were all putting the fruits they had picked into the box. Gustav held his breath, studying Edo, who stood for a long moment peering into the box. Then Edo joined the other children as they jostled

to wash their hands and raucously took their places at the tables. None of them noticed the empty side table and the lone boy standing next to it. Edo didn’t notice either. He sat down next to another boy, picked up the plate that was there, studied it in the light, and then put it back down on the table. Did he really not see him? With his lips pressed together, Gustav slowly walked along the length of the wall until he reached the door. Then he turned on his heel, slipped out of the room, and disappeared. A few moments later, the man with the beard came to inquire if the soup had been good and if he wanted more — and also if he had found his Edo. But Gustav was no longer there. He was running breathlessly, without looking back, trying to dodge the light raindrops as best he could. He ran and ran until he got to the bus stop. Only then did he stop. And he could not help but think of that day in Bratislava when he had also fled in the rain. Then it had been strong rain — a storm, really; now it was just a light drizzle. And then he had been running from Theodore. Now he was running from Edo. Why meet him anyway? He couldn’t even tell him who his uncles were. Wouldn’t it be better to come back here later, when he could tell Edo everything? About his mother, who had cried that night in the wind, about the paper she had given him, and most importantly, who his relatives were? After all, he didn’t need to be in an institution, because he had a home. He had family. Maybe he would look for Edo’s uncles himself, through the office that helped people search for relatives. When they would find the uncles and know who they were, Edo would be happy to get all the details. And he would not need to come here himself again; they would make sure to get to Edo. Maybe he would come just to tell Edo that he was the one who had given over all of the information. But maybe not. Perhaps he wouldn’t want to meet him then either. To be continued...

Senate Holds Hearings on Trump Supreme Court Nominee Amy Coney Barrett THE PULSE: The Senate held hearings on the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg as a Supreme Court justice. President Trump has successfully appointed two conservative justices to the court, Judge Neil Gorsuch and Judge Brett Kavanaugh. Judge Coney Barrett, when confirmed, will be the third. Judge Coney Barrett is one of seven children, and she and her husband Jesse Barrett have seven children of their own. Her family is interracial as two of her children, Vivan and John Peter, were adopted from Haiti. Judge Coney Barrett is expected to be a reliable conservative voice on the court. As the court’s sixth conservative justice, she will change the court’s ideological composition,

62 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 21, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

which will now reflect a 6-3 conservative majority. Judge Coney Barrett clerked for the late conservative judicial icon Antonin Scalia. Her judicial philosophy is considered similar to his. Below are some of her essential positions and writings. STARE DECISIS: Stare decisis is the Latin term meaning “to

stand by things decided.” It is the judicial concept of not overturning established precedent. In a 2013 law review article, Judge Coney Barrett wrote of the “public rejection of the proposition that stare decisis can declare a permanent victor in a divisive constitutional struggle.” This opinion gives her conservative supporters hope that she will be open to overturning or limiting established Supreme Court decisions on hot-button social issues and that she will rule in favor of returning the power to decide these issues to state governments. Her liberal detractors view these comments as problematic and as a threat to established precedent.

SECOND AMENDMENT: In the landmark 2008 gun rights case of Heller v. District of Columbia, Justice Scalia wrote that “Nothing, in our opinion, should be taken to cast doubt on long-standing prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons.” However, in a 2019 case, Judge Coney Barrett authored a dissenting opinion that a felony conviction alone is not enough of a reason for a person to lose their right to bear firearms. She argued that a man convicted of a mail fraud should not have his rights to bear firearms curtailed. She wrote that “History does not support the proposition that felons lose their Second Amendment rights solely because of their status as felons, but it does support the proposition that the state can take the right to bear arms away from a category of people that it deems dangerous.” HEALTH CARE: Judge Coney Barrett has voiced criticism

of Chief Justice John Roberts’ decision to uphold Obamacare’s individual mandate. She wrote that “Chief Justice Roberts pushed the Affordable Care Act beyond its plausible meaning to save the statute.” Her position on the latest legal challenge to Obamacare remains unknown. Democrats have argued that she is likely to strike down the entire law. However, many legal scholars and some Republican senators such as Roy Blunt (R-MO) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) have said that it’s unlikely that she will side with the administration and throw out the entire Affordable Care Act. DEATH PENALTY: Judge Coney Barrett is a practicing

Catholic. In 1998 she wrote that Catholic judges should recuse themselves from death penalty cases as they run counter to their religious beliefs. In her 2017 Senate hearings, she said, “I would recuse myself and not actually enter the order of execution.” THE SENATE HEARINGS: The questioning of Judge Co-

ney Barrett was tough and pointed, but the hearings on her nomination remained surprisingly cordial. They did not devolve into the partisan bickering and rancor that defined the Kavanaugh hearings. Senator Dianne Feinstein, the leading Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said, “This has been one of the best set of hearings that I’ve participated in,” and that “It leaves one with a lot of hopes, a lot of questions, and even some ideas perhaps of good bipartisan legislation we can put together.” Judge Coney Barrett’s nomination will move out of the committee on Thursday and proceed to a full vote on the Senate floor. She is expected to easily win confirmation as the ninth Supreme Court justice. THE IMPACT: The president’s supporters have hailed his impressive record appointing conservative justices to the federal courts and have lauded his legacy appointments to the Supreme Court. To date, the president has appointed more than 200 conservative judges to the federal bench. The impact of these appointments will be long-lasting, as many of these judges are appointed for life. Joe Biden has refused to comment on whether he would entertain the possibility of adding justices to the Supreme Court to miti-

gate the growing conservative majority. Biden had previously been on record opposing this court-packing tactic but has refused to answer what he would do if elected. Biden would only be able to pack the court if the Democrats retain control of the House and win control of the Senate and the presidency. The Coney Barrett nomination allows the president to focus on his numerous achievements in the area of judicial appointments as Election Day draws near. The focus on the judiciary is a compelling rallying call for social conservatives, as conservative justices are more likely to protect religious liberties. Many conservatives also believe that the president’s appointments will defend their constitutional rights and stop the encroachment of liberal judicial activism.

Trump and Biden Hold Dueling Town Halls THE PULSE: The Commission on Presidential Debates canceled the second presidential debate after the president refused to partake in the proposed virtual format due to fears that with this format, the moderators would put him at a disadvantage. In place of the debate, both candidates held town halls on national networks. Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden held his town hall in Philadelphia while President Trump held his in Miami. THE IMPACT: Many Republicans criticized Savannah Guthrie, who hosted Trump’s town hall, as being too confrontational with the president. Her questioning was aggressive as she took the president to task for spreading QAnon conspiracy theories about the bin Laden raid. According to Nielsen ratings, 14.1 million viewers watched the Biden town hall, and 13.5 million watched the Trump town hall.

Voting Begins Throughout America THE PULSE: More than 20 million voters have already cast their ballots in the presidential election. Many voters have cast their ballots by mail, while others have voted in person at early voting sites. To date, registered Democrats have returned ballots at a higher rate than registered Republicans. THE IMPACT: Early voting makes it easier for many Ameri-

can’s to cast their votes. However, it also makes it less likely for last-minute changes in voters’ intentions, as many have cast their vote days or weeks before Election Day. President Trump is currently trailing in national and battleground polling, and widespread early voting will make it harder for him to make up ground before Election Day. The president will debate Joe Biden on Thursday in Nashville, Tennessee. The debate will likely be the president’s best chance to change the trajectory of the race. He will need to convince middle-of-the-road voters to support his agenda for the next four years.

CHICKEN & COUSCOUS MEDLEY

CHICKEN & COUSCOUS MEDLEY Celery salt is a wholesome spice that adds an intriguing flavor to food. Thanks, Toby W., for introducing me to this wonderful spice. It makes this meal taste gourmet without you having to spend hours in the kitchen. The secret is now yours to keep. Yield: 6 servings

The honey-mustard combo adds a kick of flavor to this otherwise classic supper menu. Yield: 4 servings

INGREDIENTS 1½–2 lb. dark chicken stew (see note)

2 bell peppers

5 T. oil

1 medium zucchini

1–2 T. paprika

1 box instant couscous (see note)

2 tsp. celery salt (or 1½ tsp. salt)

H O N E YM U S TA R D SALMON SUPPER

1 large onion

3–4 cups boiling water

¼ tsp. black pepper

INGREDIENTS 4 slices salmon, or any other type of fish (see note) 12 oz. fresh or frozen green beans 4 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced 1 package or can cooked beets, diced

DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°. 2. Combine the oil with the spices in a large bowl or pot. Add the chicken and toss to coat. 3. Thinly slice the peppers and onion. Cut the zucchini into thick matchstick-style strips. 4. Add the vegetables to the chicken in the bowl, and toss again to coat. 5. Spread the chicken and vegetables onto a paper-lined cookie sheet and bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until the chicken can be pierced easily and the vegetables are tender-crisp. 6. Move the chicken and vegetables to the sides of the pan, creating an empty column down the middle. Pour the couscous into this space, then pour 3 cups boiling water over the couscous, adding another cup if necessary. Sprinkle couscous with some salt and paprika, if desired. 7. Cover the pan loosely, and return it to the oven for 5 minutes. Fluff the couscous with a fork before serving. Note: Regular couscous or farfel may be used instead. Add these after the chicken and vegetables have baked for 25 minutes, and bake everything until the couscous or farfel is soft and the water has been absorbed. Note: Any cut of chicken or turkey can be used; the baking time may need to be adjusted accordingly. PREP AHEAD: Combine chicken, vegetables, oil and spices in a bowl. Spread this onto a cookie sheet, and refrigerate until ready to bake.

DRESSING: 3 T. honey 3 T. mustard 6 T. mayonnaise 1 tsp. salt DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°. Line a cookie sheet with baking paper. Place the fish slices down the middle of the pan. Mix together the dressing ingredients, then coat each slice with about 1 tablespoon of dressing. 2. Place potatoes, green beans and beets in rows alongside the fish. Drizzle the remaining dressing over each row of food. Toss to coat. 3. Bake for about 30 minutes, until the potatoes can be pierced with a fork. Cover until serving. Note: If using fish that needs less baking time, you may need to bake the vegetables before adding the fish to the pan, so the fish doesn’t get overbaked before the potatoes are done.

B AT T E R- B A K E D C H IC K E N A N D R IC E

B AT T E R- B A K E D CHICKEN AND RICE Creating this meal as a one-sheet dinner was a bit of a challenge, as rice needs water to cook, while the batter on the chicken doesn’t exactly appreciate soaking in a bathtub. The simple method I eventually figured out made the effort worthwhile. Enjoy the tasty results. Yield: 6 servings

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

1½–2 lb. chicken cutlets

1. Preheat the oven to 400°. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, extending the paper up the sides of the pan. Spread the rice and broccoli over the paper. Sprinkle with salt and spices. Pour the boiling water and oil over the rice and broccoli. Cover loosely with foil, and bake for 1 hour.

1½ cups rice ½ bag (12 oz.) frozen broccoli ½ tsp. salt ½ tsp. onion/garlic powder ⅛ tsp. black pepper 5 cups boiling water 2 T. oil BATTER 2 eggs ¼ cup oil ¼ cup water 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. onion powder 2 tsp. paprika ¼ tsp. black pepper Dash of cayenne pepper, optional 1 cup flour ½ tsp. baking soda

2. For the batter: In a medium-sized bowl, beat the eggs with oil and water. Add the rest of the ingredients, and beat with a fork until smooth. 3. Cut the chicken into several thin pieces and add them to the bowl, tossing so all the chicken pieces are coated. 4. Remove the pan from the oven. (The rice will not be completely done. If rice appears too dry, add up to an additional 1 cup of water.) Lift the two short ends of the paper and fold the paper in half, sandwiching the rice and broccoli between the paper so it fills only half of the baking pan. 5. Line the now-empty half of the pan with another sheet of baking paper. Place the coated pieces of chicken onto this paper. 6. Return the pan to the oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through. PREP AHEAD: Prepare the chicken in a bowl. Cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Prepare rice and broccoli with salt/spices in a pan. When ready to bake, pour the boiling water over the rice and broccoli and follow directions.

2020: THE WORLD HAS GONE WILD. Aside from a virus run amok, riots across the country, and a presidential election that’s raising eyebrows all around, wildfires are burning their way through millions of acres of land on the West Coast. On the opposite side of America, a different

story is taking place: Highly destructive hurricanes are pummeling the Southeast, one after another. Let’s step back in time and discover what previous storms have taught the health care system about hurricane preparedness.

AUGUST 14, 2003 It was an ordinary day in the operating room as the surgeons worked to correct a young woman’s facial deformity. She was only 23 years old, and otherwise healthy. No complications were anticipated… until the lights began to flicker. They were three hours into the eighthour procedure, and the patient’s jaw was disconnected from her skull; there wasn’t much option but to continue the surgery. Despite the initial interruption, the lighting remained stable for a while — though the air conditioner was clearly without power. As they operated, condensation slowly developed on the windows of the operating room doors as the temperature crept ever higher. Twenty minutes of sweaty surgery later, the overhead lights suddenly went dark. Only the surrounding fluorescents provided a bit of dim lighting in the darkened room. Thankfully, the telephone lines were still working, and a quick call informed the team that a major power outage had hit a large portion of the Northeast. Like most hospitals, this one was equipped with a backup generator that was able to power the building’s most vital systems in the case of a blackout. But even though it was running, the surgeons instinctively felt that things could go from bad to worse in short order. Their 76 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

feelings weren’t wrong. Minutes later the electricity completely fizzled out, leaving the room black. Only the digital displays on the patient monitor and anesthesia machine were working, running on their own internal backup batteries.

Several technicians bearing flashlights soon arrived to ensure that the anesthesia machine’s power would be sufficient to keep the patient sedated, for it would be tragic for her to wake up and find herself in such a compromised state. Once the team was confident that the patient was properly ventilated and would not awaken prematurely, the decision to abort the surgery was unanimously made. The patient was placed into as stable a state as possible and then laboriously transferred to another building in the hospital complex — one with a more reliable source of electricity. She remained sedated until the surgery could be completed successfully the following day.

When Hurricane Sandy touched down in New York on October 29, 2012, NYU Langone Medical Center was one of several city hospitals that lost power, necessitating the transfer of around 300 NYU Langone patients to neighboring facilities. The hospital stairwells were filled with overworked staff schlepping “med sleds,” some of whose occupants were being manually “bagged” in place of ventilators that were no longer working. Patients ranged from the tiniest premature infants to medically fragile adults. One by one they faced the harrowing trip down, down, down, relying on human hands to prevent them from falling onto the steps below. Outside NYU Langone, more than 50 ambulances were constantly coming and going, transporting one patient at a time to places of greater safety. In the days that followed, a slew of hard questions were asked. Why did NYU Lagone lose power? Why didn’t its backup generator function effectively? What happened to its backup generator’s backup generator? Who was responsible for the whole life-threatening fiasco? Critics found it hard to believe that a power failure of such epic proportions could take place in a hospital in one of the most advanced cities in the world — especially after the world had supposedly learned its lesson from the Memorial Medical Center tragedy that took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005...

KATRINA’S CATASTROPHE

At only a few feet above ground, the emergencypower transfer switch — which was responsible for signaling the generator to seamlessly take over in the event of a power outage — sat right in the path of the rising water.

It was Monday, August 29, when Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, and though Memorial Medical Center’s main power supply was knocked out by the storm, the backup generator kept the hospital supplied with electricity for vital operations such as maintaining lighting in the operating rooms and keeping life-

support systems running. Due to the tremendous amount of energy that air conditioning consumes, the A/C system had not been hooked up to the backup generator, causing the temperature inside the building to reach well over 100 degrees. Additionally, there was no running water, and food and medical supplies dwindled, turning the building into an overheated hub of

suffering. As time went on, conditions became even worse. By the next morning, floodwaters from overrun levees began inching ever higher, putting the hospital in significant danger of losing even its backup power. At only a few feet above ground, the emergencypower transfer switch — which was responsible for signaling the generator to seamlessly take over in the event of a power outage — sat right in the path of the rising water. Hospital staff realized that they would have to evacuate the roughly 2,000 people — staff, patients and family — via helicopter and boat. Throughout the day they labored, using the only working elevator to transfer patients, one at a time, to the helipad on the roof. By nightfall, they’d managed to transport about 50 of 180 patients who were under the care of the hospital. An additional 52 patients registered in Lifecare, the long-term critical care facility on the seventh floor, also awaited transport. In the middle of the night, about 48 hours since the storm began, the backup generator failed, plunging the entire hospital into deadly darkness. Vital machinery, such as ventilators, switched over to internal backup batteries, leaving each patient who was reliant on them with a countdown on their lives. Panic ensued. With the elevator no longer working, staff began hustling to manually transport patients as quickly as possible to the helipad and the emergency room, where rescue boats had begun arriving. Despite their efforts, however, batteries began to die — and with them, patients. Rescue operations were taking place not only at the hospital, but also all around the ravaged city, causing the Coast Guard helicopters to begin arriving less frequently. The exhausted hospital staff felt pressed to triage, deciding who would be saved first, second, and so on. Dr. Anna Pou allegedly took things a step further, injecting (and encouraging other hospital staff to inject) patients who were deemed hopeless with medications “to make them feel better.” The evacuations continued, with live patients leaving, and those who died, remaining. On Sunday, September 11, when a recovery team was able to enter the hospital, a grim discovery was made in the dark and odorous halls of the medical center: 45 bodies in various states of decay. The high body count was suspicious, as no other facility in the city had lost so many patients. Toxicology reports later revealed that 23 of the deceased had been given lethal doses of pain re-

lief and/or sedating drugs. Though Pou and her staffers were exonerated in the end, multiple eye witnesses claim that under the intense strain of the situation, the doctor and her team had chosen to have “mercy” on the most suffering patients, including the patients they deemed least capable of transport, such as a nearly 400-pound paraplegic who had not been gravely ill before being administered the deadly cocktail. All this because the power went out.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN? Knowing the dreadful effects a blackout can have on a hospital, how is it possible that NYU Langone lost power seven years after the horrific story of Memorial Medical Center rocked the world? While it would be easy to point a finger at faulty planning, NYU Langone was actually confident that they’d have the wherewithal to withstand the storm. In fact, NYU Langone’s namesake, its chairman, Mr. Kenneth Langone, was recovering from pneumonia at the hospital when Sandy hit. He had to be evacuated with the other patients. He, along with everyone else in the administration, had been certain that the hospital’s seven generators would do their jobs in case of a power outage. According to Richard Cohen, the vice president of facili-

ties operations, all of the generators were only a few years old at the time Sandy hit and had been placed on higher floors to ensure that floodwaters wouldn’t wipe them out, as had happened at Memorial. Additionally, new fuel pumps were installed inside a pump house that was designed to withstand flooding. That pump house, located in the basement, actually did weather the storm well, surviving the more than ten feet of water that rushed in. The fuel vault, though — where the generator’s fuel was stored and fed to the generators — was a different story. The force of the storm surge caused debris to infiltrate the fuel vault, where sensors picked up on the change in the system and disabled the flow of fuel to the generators. And the rest is history — a rather unpleasant one for those who had to be evacuated…

MOVING FORWARD With the many hurricanes America has weathered in the past twenty years, emergency preparedness measures in hospitals have been continuously upgraded. Over at NYU Langone, for instance, the Energy Building, as it is dubbed, is a relatively new project that has taken over 71,000 square feet of Manhattan. Opened in 2018, the building’s job is to provide the hospital with clean, efficient energy that doesn’t fizzle out — even in a hurricane. Aside from producing its own energy for the hospital system, the Energy Building also houses emergency backup generators that are tucked away in sort of a vault within a vault — hopefully impenetrable by future floods. There is also a barrier system on the campus, composed of flood doors, pumps, and other innovations designed to mitigate the chance of another power outage within their corridors. But will these measures truly be enough to stand strong against another Sandy-like storm? Only the winds of time will tell.

IN A WORLD OF BILLION-DOLLAR COMPUTER MODELS, HIGHLY TRAINED EXPERTS, AND CELEBRITY FORECASTERS, ONE YUNGERMAN IS MAKING A NAME FOR HIMSELF, WITH THOUSANDS OF FAMILIES RELYING ON HIS WELLRESEARCHED WEATHER REPORTS.

Like many other marvels of our modern world, weather forecasts are something we mostly take for granted. When setting the A/C for Shabbos, we look at the predicted weather with the confidence that we peruse the zmanim calendar, and when we plan a trip we consider the weather forecast to be as fixed as the roadmaps we rely upon. Yet accurate weather forecasting is a relatively new phenomenon, and a tremendous amount of data needs to be crunched and analyzed before patterns can be recognized and weather predicted. The process begins with powerful computer models running simulations based on current observations, and then requires trained meteorologists to apply their expertise and intuition in order to provide a forecast to the public. Over the past decade, the Yiddishspeaking world has come to rely on a most unexpected source of weather expertise. On the popular Kol Mevaser hotline, Yisroel Yakov (Yaker)

Bigeleisen has been offering up weather and storm analyses with the fluency of a trained professional. He did not receive traditional meteorological training, but his analyses are highly sought after and have earned him much respect in the meteorological world. Mr. Bigeleisen studied in chassidish yeshivos and always showed an analytical mind and a thorough approach to learning. At some point, he began dabbling in aviation, which soon led to a fascination with weather. The world of aviation is closely intertwined with the field of meteorology, as pilots and controllers need to understand weather patterns well, and he increasingly found himself drawn to meteorology. Early on, he would provide reports to friends and family as a hobby, but soon his reputation grew and Kol Mevaser asked him to provide weather reports that could be shared with the public. “Writing a weather report is not as simple as knowing how to read a model printout, he explains. “There are many different models and, more often than not, they diverge in meaningful ways. The American GFS, the European model, and the Canadian GEM are among the most respected models, but they each come with their own tendencies, specialties, shortcomings, blind spots and model biases. Knowing when to trust whom for a specific kind of storm and location requires lots of

practice and skill.” The weather models are created by the most powerful supercomputers in the world, some of which operate at speeds of 50–100 trillion calculations per second. A wide range of weather data — such as temperature, moisture, air pressure and wind — are collected from satellites, weather balloons, on-ground observations, radar installations and other sources. They’re then fed into these supercomputers, which go to work and apply complicated mathematical formulas to predict what the weather will look like in each location an hour, day, or even weeks later. A slight change of even a couple of degrees can make a world of difference to the end result. This is what makes predicting the weather so difficult — and so fascinating. Mr. Bigeleisen spends over an hour on each weather report, which he then submits to be read on the hotline. Before and during storms or special occasions, he’s brought on for an indepth interview, often multiple times per day. While his job is to relay information, he realizes that people rely on him as they make important decisions. He’s aware of his heavy responsibility — to make sure he doesn’t end up misleading people or, potentially, even put listeners in danger. “During major snowstorms or the windy hurricane season, I often work around the clock to provide the most accurate and up-to-date information available. People who might have to travel or plan events cannot safely rely on a 60-second radio update to properly evaluate how to proceed. If there is lightning passing a heimish area, I want people to know not to spend time in a pool or even an indoor body of water. If it’s going to be very windy or there’s flash flooding expected, people should know to remain home. I take this achrayus very seriously.” In addition to storm seasons, Mr. Bigeleisen shares detailed wind reports before Sukkos, heat warnings before Tisha B’Av, and weather previews before each season as well as prior to significant events. When there’s major weather-related news around the globe, Kol Mevaser listeners get to hear a unique and informed perspective from their trusted chassidish weather expert. The success of Mr. Bigeleisen’s work has led to many families and groups reaching out for weather-related assistance. His help was solicited during critical search-and-rescue missions;

schools have asked about trip planning; yeshivos have called before Shabbatons; families have requested input before camping or a ski trip; and much more. He has even heard from a couple of rebbes before the final hours of kiddush levanah, inquiring whether they would be able to see a clear moon or if they should perhaps quickly travel to another state. Weather reporting is tricky and people often complain when they feel he got something wrong. When asked about it, Mr. Bigeleisen smiles. “It’s always easier to complain than to share positive feedback when I get things right. The truth is that an area can experience no snow while those a few miles over see a decent amount, and one block can avoid rain while another

A slight change of even a couple of degrees can make a world of difference to the end result. This is what makes predicting the weather so difficult — and so fascinating.

one a few streets over gets soaked — especially upstate.” Mr. Bigeleisen has some impressive “hits” on his resume, including the December 2010 storm that crippled the city, and being among the earliest to realize that the much-hyped January 2015 blizzard would veer a few dozen miles to the east and spare us the worst. Perhaps most impressive of all is his acceptance in the world of professional meteorology. Some of the most influential forecasters in the tri-state area consider him a friend and colleague. Recently, Mr. Bigeleisen visited the National Weather Service’s (NWS) local headquarters on Long Island in the company of one of New York’s top weather reporters. When the NWS staff heard about his lack of professional training, they refused to believe that someone who doesn’t boast their credentials could have such extensive knowledge and understanding of this scientific field. With winter around the corner, thousands of schoolchildren will soon turn their ears to Mr. Bigeleisen, hoping for white forecasts measured in feet, not inches. While snow and weather predictions are notoriously fickle, there’s one prediction that can be shared with confidence: Whatever nature has in store, Yaker Bigeleisen will be right on top of it, informing a community of grateful listeners of what to expect.

ADVENIUM TEAM MEMBER

T The Shabbos timer ticked rhythmically toward Shabbos, 2:00 p.m. The special treats (parsha-themed, of course) sat eagerly in their boxes and the Bnos song sheets lay on each desk anxious to be learned. Come to the new, improved Bnos this Shabbos! had been my battle cry for weeks. And joining in that cry were the group leaders — high school volunteers who had selflessly devoted hours to plan and prepare, create and cut, so that every minute spent with the Bnos members in their charge would be fun-filled and meaningful. My plans for improving and upgrading a Shabbos Bnos organization in my neighborhood were flying high. But when an (almost) hurricane dropped from the sky on Shabbos Parshas Noach 5757 — October of ‘96 — my hopes of a first Shabbos shebang were sent plummeting and my dreams of a grand opening were swept away with the wind that the storm blew in. All Shabbos morning, as the menfolk from my family, dripping buckets of water, trooped in from shul, I listened with a heavy heart to their warrior tales: how they’d battled the puddle at Sixteenth Avenue corner FortyFourth Street, how they were among the very few who made it to our cousin’s kiddush a couple of blocks away. I knew that in a few hours I, too, would have a tale to tell. As the branch head of Bnos,

and this being the very first Shabbos that had been so touted, I had to be there — even if just one child showed up. So at 2:00 that Shabbos afternoon, my two young daughters and I, covered with plastic from head to toe, braved the storm. (In 1996, me’ils hadn’t yet appeared on anyone’s drawing board.) The Boro Park streets resembled a desert island — a sopping-wet one. I was too busy focusing on trying to walk a straight line despite the gusts pummeling me, while trying to keep my rain bonnet somewhere in the vicinity of my sheitel, to think about what I would find when I got to the school building that housed the Bnos. As I neared the building, I made out some figures in front of the building. Ahh! The Bnos leaders – those devoted, responsible souls – had trekked from all corners of Boro Park to fulfill their commitment. A crowd of little girls was there, too. These die-hard Bnos-goers would not allow something as insignificant as a hurricane to come between them and Bnos. But why were they standing huddled in the rain outside the school’s doors? Those doors that were to open our Bnos to a new chapter in its history were shut! The perpetrator of this crime? The wind! The head leaders had been given a Shabbos key to the outer gate, but the doors right behind the gate were to be kept open by a piece of wood — a small piece of wood that had proven no match for 40-mile-per-hour gusts. I looked at the wet — dripping wet, windy wet, miserably wet — children and made a decision: We were not wait for the (non-Jewish) employee to bring a key. We would ask a neighboring school, a few blocks away and open for their own Shabbos Bnos groups, to extend to us their hospitality. I stayed behind in case there were any latecomers, and more importantly, to be there in case parents were early birds when coming to pick up their children; all of the children who had come to Bnos had arrived before I had, so I had no idea who they had come with orwhat their plans for going home were. I stood under the awning that extended a mere eight inches, watching the children wend their way up the avenue. I could hear a few little ones crying,

their sobs almost drowned out by the shrieking wind. One little girl’s comment reverberated in my head: “Why did you make Bnos this Shabbos if you knew that on Parshas Noach there is a mabul?” I think it was when they were out of sight that I first tuned into how I was faring. My arms felt funny, as if I had stepped shoulder-deep into bath water. In my single-minded attempt to keep my sheitel dry — after all, as an authority figure I was determined to look semi-presentable that Shabbos afternoon — I had clutched my rain bonnet with both hands to stop it from falling hostage to the enemy wind. So the rain had found another target: my arms. From wrist to shoulder, wetness reigned. The water, flowing in through my raised sleeves, had glued the lining of my jacket sleeve to my arm; little droplets drip-dripped their tickling way down my back. And so I stood, watching the wind blow in (what seemed to me) two directions at once and the rain come down like mountains of sand emptied by a monster truck. I stood there, soggy and shivering in my dress and coat, both of which were soaked outside and in. My feet were wading in my boots, which had sprung a leak that transformed them from waterproof boots to water boots. The hands on my watch moved slower and slower as the rain pelted the pavement faster and faster. I stood there feeling miserably sorry for myself, shocked and shaken that one little piece of wood had caused such disappointment and distress. I tried not to calculate the cleaners’ bill (Shabbos kodesh!) for restoring (was it even possible?) the water damage my clothes had suffered. I steered my mind in the direction of the Bnos program I had committed to oversee. The thought that I would have to spend every future Shabbos afternoon supervising the Bnos matched my dark mood to the overcast sky. But then another thought brought a smile to my wet face: This Shabbos storm had guaranteed that never would my volunteering spirit be tainted by one trace of a complaint about sacrificing my Shabbos afternoon sleep. For what more could one ask than an ordinary, dry Shabbos Bnos experience?

When an (almost) hurricane dropped from the sky on Shabbos Parshas Noach 5757, my hopes of a first Shabbos shebang were sent plummeting — and my dreams of a grand opening were swept away with the wind that the storm blew in.

We are excited to introduce our new column, where each week we will give you a glimpse into the life of a notable member of the community. As Boro Park’s premier weekly, we hope that this feature will help unite local residents on a more personal level. You know about them; now get to know them.

By: Y. Blooming

This Week:

Barry Spitzer District Manager, Brooklyn Community Board 12

The City of New York is home to over 8 million people. In order for the city to meet the residents’ needs, it is split up into 59 community boards, each of which oversees and advises on the zoning, budgeting and services in its own district. In Boro Park and the surrounding areas, District Manager Barry Spitzer has become the unquestioned community representative before the city’s myriad of agencies and officials. His dedication has earned him the respect of those he works with and the gratitude of those he serves. While our elected officials publicly represent us, the district office is charged with making things happen on a day-to-day basis. In our area, Mr. Spitzer and his team are the ones tasked with this heavy responsibility. Which communities and neighborhoods is your office responsible for?

We serve all constituents in Brooklyn Community Board 12. The district runs from 8th Avenue to Avenue P, and from 61st Street to Coney Island Avenue. While the majority of residents are Jewish, we also represent a diverse group of Asians, Muslims and others. I have cultivated a warm relationship with all community leaders, and they are comfortable reaching out to me with anything they might need.

96 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 21, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

What is your job description as a district manager?

First, some background: The city is divided into many districts. Each district has a community board of 50 volunteer members, half of them appointed by the borough president and the other half by the local council members. The chairman of Community Board 12 is my good friend, the renowned askan Yidel Perlstein, and the board is tasked with submitting to the city zoning plans, public transportation demands, special needs service requests, and other public needs. At the same time, each district oversees the public services in its area. The district office is charged with coordinating it all and ensuring that residents are properly served. As the district manager, I am the head of the district office. What type of services are we referring to?

In a word, everything. Let’s consider the police department. People may not know this, but police precincts are based on community board district lines. Similarly, the fire or sanitation commissioner offices cannot properly deal directly with every neighborhood’s needs, which is why we have a “district cabinet” with representatives from these agencies. The same goes for the Department of Parks, Senior Services and nearly everything else — both visible and under the radar. Is this only on a general basis, or can you also assist people on an individual level?

The agencies consider us their men on the ground in the district. People contact our office every day with problems big and small. It can be a guy who is having trouble with the building department, a street block whose road has been neglected, or a school with sanitation pickup issues. We are hired to represent this neighborhood and, baruch Hashem, we’ve seen great success in our efforts. How did a chassidish yungerman end up as the district manager for 200,000 people?

I worked in the private sector for a number of years, while always being involved in chesed with the aspirations to help the community. When Simcha Felder left his position as councilman, I had heard good things about David Greenfeld and reached out to offer my services to his campaign. After his win, he asked me to join his office as district director, and I was eventually promoted to deputy chief of staff. When the previous district manager left to be part of the DA’s office, the community board search committee interviewed me and recommended my candidacy to the rest of the board. They looked at my record of helping constituents and approved me for the position. I should note that I don’t try to hide from being a visibly chassidish individual. I received a typical yeshivah education, and I use my platform to help others see that someone like me can — and does —make it successfully in the outside world.

What are some unique challenges you find working in this neighborhood?

Every district is in some ways unique, but there are many things that agencies rarely face elsewhere. I’ll give one example that many take for granted: On Lag Ba’omer evening there used to be one large fire in Boro Park. Today, each kehillah wants to make their own, and they are, of course, entitled to do so. Now there are 30 fires simultaneously, each one requiring street closures and traffic rerouting, additional fire personnel available, representatives in contact with authorities present, and more. This requires coordination with multiple agencies and is the type of thing that falls on our shoulders. Do you find city agencies have an ear to requests that are unique to frum life?

Absolutely. New York is a very diverse place, and the city is used to accommodating many religious and cultural needs. In our community, there are many scenarios where I communicate with outsiders to help them understand why we’ll need certain accommodations, such as at a large rebbishe wedding, a hachnasas sefer Torah, esrog trailers, Erev Pesach fires, or other community events. We often take it for granted when we see police patrolling late at night after the Seder or at the boardwalk during tashlich, but someone had to work with them to make it happen. That task is ours. How has your life changed as you became a public figure?

I generally stay out of the spotlight and go about my life normally, but people come over for help whenever I’m in shul or at events. People have our cell numbers, and Yidel Perlstein and I receive calls for assistance at all hours. I recently had someone call me late at night, saying that he had received a notice from the sheriff and he was confused and afraid. There was a school that had their gas turned off on a winter holiday weekend, and the adminstrator noticed only on Sunday morning that they were left out in the cold — literally. The kids were freezing and there was a wedding scheduled for that evening. As the district manager, I was able to utilize my network of contacts to get the matter resolved quickly. What is it like doing this work every day?

The meetings and events get the spotlight, but we can’t publicly share so much of what we do on behalf of individuals and most of our work happens in the background. For example, we prepare the budget for our community services and submit it to our council members well in advance; right now we’re already working on the fiscal year 2022. Every day is an adventure, and I keep in mind my achrayus as the community’s representative. I always tell the staff that when people contact us, they’ve already tried the regular channels and are desperate for help. Even matters that might seem trivial to others mean the world to them. It is our duty to act accordingly, every time.

So what’s on your schedule today? No matter your profession, status or family size, your calendar is as essential to your daily tasks as water is to survival. It highlights all your appointments, occasions and responsibilities. It serves as a signpost to direct the traffic in your life. Scheduling, though, is so much more than penciling in appointments and important events in the squares of a calendar. It is a way of thinking, figuring and evaluating the bits and pieces of life. It is knowing how much time each task will take, how much transition time every single detail in your life will involve, and how many balls you can successfully juggle in the span of an hour, day and month. For the ADHDer, the lack of assigning a schedule and order to daily life is their ultimate undoing. Overscheduling or underscheduling leaves them feeling breathless, choked, and unable to complete their daily tasks. 102 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 21, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

This episode will feature the day-by-day and minute-by-minute struggle of an ADHD woman.

MEIRA’S STORY: “So what will you be wearing to the wedding tonight?” It was a simple question that stared me in the face. It jeered, taunted and mocked me with its mirthful laughter. It looked at me with disdain, as if I was a clumsy clown. What, indeed? It was 6:30 in the evening when Laiky called me with her innocent question. Wedding? Tonight? I felt faint. My brain went into overdrive: Sheitel? Chasunah wig needs to be reset. Dress? Rumpled heap of fabric, in need of the cleaners. Babysitter? Doubt anyone is still available now. I couldn’t believe it. Aunt Bruchy was marrying off her

youngest, her mezinka. The wedding was all my mother could talk, eat and breathe about for the past six months. After all, it was her youngest sister marrying off her youngest child! I knew that the wedding was sometime in March. But “sometime” is a vague term. Arrangements? Well, I always reasoned, there is so much to do now, and there’s always next week. It was a mere hour before the kabbalas panim when that fateful phone call woke me from my reverie, and I was as ready as ever (just kidding!). I was sitting rooted to my chair with a tichel sans makeup, flour-spotted robe top, husband still at work, kvetchy kids clinging to my skirt, and (you guessed it) no babysitter in sight. I am ashamed to put pen to paper and recount the piteous

saga of my final wedding ensemble: I had to wear my prettiest Shabbos sweater when I had an expensive, well-tailored special-occasion dress in the closet, because I had failed to send it to the dry cleaners after my sisterin law’s vort last week. (It was badly creased and couldn’t be worn without a cleaner’s expert touchup.) Ditto for for my wig. I felt underdressed in my weekday wig, but there was no way I could put on my other wig without a reset. I forced a smile when I walked into the ballroom. Everything, from the wedding décor to the guests, looked magnificent. My sisters were dressed to the nines, all sparkly and prepared for this long-awaited wedding. I looked neat and puttogether, but…. Let’s not go into details. “Meira!” My first cousin from London greeted me with a warm smile. “You look great.” I noticed her pitying gaze as she sized me up. I wanted to tell her: “This is not the real version of me. I have a beautiful

sleek wig, a designer dress. And I should have, could have, worn it tonight. “ But in my heart of hearts, I knew that as much as I desperately tried to glue together the pieces of my life into one cohesive whole, they were like torn bits of paper that slipped through my fingers and scattered around my house and my life, all the time. * * * * *

I could write a book about great intentions and even greater flops. There was the time when I volunteered to be on the hostessing committee of a tzedakah party and also agreed to be on board and attend a meeting addressing a different important community crisis. When the date arrived, I realized that both events were scheduled for exactly the same time. And how can I forget the time I promised to take a slot visiting my ailing grandmother who was recovering in a hospital a two-hour drive from my house, and by the time

In a presentation given by Cris Sgrott of Organizing Maniacs, she discusses the pitfalls faced by those struggling with time and task management. She also offers constructive advice as how to overcome organizational challenges and succeed in daily tasks. Cris discusses several “lies” that we tell ourselves to ward off daily tasks, including procrastination (well, tomorrow, no?); overscheduling (cramming your calendar so full that you feel faint when looking at your list of to-dos. This causes you to surrender to feelings of overwhelming failure, and resolve to do nothing); underscheduling (leaving your calendar empty as a blank slate and storing all events in your head, so that you end up thinking that you have loads of free time at your disposal and you might as well do this and that and the other. Obviously impossible); bargaining (first relax, eat, exercise... then do the task). Cris also offers an invaluable toolbox to solve these problems. Some of her ideas are: Use planners and write out everything, in step-by-step detail; utilize the power of sticky notes; hold yourself accountable; break down tasks into bite-sized steps to make them attainable and manageable; plan transition time between meetings or events; remember that a task also needs preparation time; and reward yourself for accomplishments and reaching goals. Additionally, it is important to factor in fixed routines. Meira complains about making a bakery-worthy cake and realizing that there was no supper to put on the table. Tasks that are important to daily living and maintenance should be put into a daily fixed routine. (The same holds true for her issues of homework, laundry, bath time and so on.) With help, guidance and proper support, Meira can definitely change her life for the better!

Know anyone Looking for her Bashert? Ready to approach this subject with an open mind? This might be the hidden treasure!

I left the house my shift had already begun? My days are like a long runon sentence. Dishes, homework, bath time and laundry are one big jumble. I can start baking a multistep cake at five in the afternoon, and forget about making supper. Comes Erev Shabbos or Erev Yom Tov, and my kids’ finery can still be in the hamper. And what about the Shabbos meal? Good question. Don’t tell my neighbors and friends, but a scant few hours before the zman my Shabbos cooking and prep can still be (gasp!) not in the freezer or the oven, but in the planning stage. I have always wondered about people who have it all figured out. Do they possess a magic wand? This is my tale of a life in disarray. But I resolved to move on. I wanted to put my life in order. I wanted every day to look as organized as a filing cabinet. Could I structure my days right? Could I get my life back? By now, I am glad to report that there is hope. No, there is no magic wand, but with persistent and calculated practice and changes I will hopefully be able to overcome and thrive in life despite my ADHD challenges. As one of a select few coaches worldwide with the designation of PCAC (Professional Certified ADHD Coach) and an ACC-credentialed life Coach from the ICF (the International Coaching Federation), Aviva Nirenberg has guided her many motivated clients on the pathway to success. She employs positive psychology and draws upon 20 years of experience as educator and coach to help clients make positive and enduring life changes. This time of year brings along two things, rainy weathers and people complaining about it. The saddened spirit is actually not a case of psychologist’s fallacy: Lack of sun causes the body to produce less serotonin, which in turn affects mood and appetite. Norman Rosenthal, a psychiatrist and scientist, coined the most perfectly apropos term for this condition: seasonal affective disorder, better known by its acronym: SAD.

Not all raindrops are created equal. In fact, none are: the size and shape of every falling raindrop differ, and no two are the same! The average size is between 0.1 millimeter to 9 millimeter. Sometimes they start out bigger, but as they pick up speed and approach the ground, they break up into smaller droplets. The shape of a raindrop is actually not a teardrop. A big raindrop looks like a flattened oval, and the smaller they are, the rounder they get.

The world’s largest desert is not the Sahara! Deserts are not defined by their roasting temperatures or mounds of sand. Rather, they are areas that experience a moisture deficit and, in turn, make for optimal wasteland. The continent with the lowest rainfall is snow-covered Antarctica! Just 6.5 inches of rain falls there each year, in comparison to most deserts, which receive an average of 10 inches annually.

Not all raindrops that fall reach the ground! This phenomenon is known as phantom rain, and it happens mostly in deserts. When the air in an area is very dry, the pouring rain is absorbed by the air, evaporating before it has a chance to wet the ground!

“Raining cats and dogs” Why is it that when the skies are dripping with rain, we bring our canine and feline friends into the mix?

108 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

No one really knows where this expression comes from, but you can be sure it did not originate because animals fell from the sky. Many claim that this idiom was inspired by the sight of many cats and dogs roaming the streets during a downpour. These creatures, who would usually huddle in thatched roofs, would get washed out during heavy rains and were then left to roam the streets searching for shelter. This theory has never gained credence, though — and it is also close to an impossible scenario. In order to slip from the roof, a dog would have to be sitting on the outside of the thatch — hardly the spot an animal would choose as shelter in bad weather. It could also be a corruption of the obsolete word catadoupe. In old French it means waterfall, so when we say it’s raining cats and dogs, we might be suggesting that the rain is coming down in waterfalls. No evidence was found for this, either; maybe had there also been a word dogadoupe we might have been getting somewhere. Either way, the eccentricity of the image behind the phrase adds to the creative and unpredictable nature of the English language.

Profound speculations: Is it better to walk or run in the rain? A professor who appeared in European Journal of Physics has come to the conclusion that when caught in the rain “you should run as fast as you could, not always, but in general.” I guess the other times you can try to walk between the raindrops. It is actually scientifically proven that the faster you go, the drier

By: Esti Greenfeld

you’ll stay — regardless of the additional raindrops you bump into on the way. A brilliant professor, indeed!

I smell petrichor! Well, I smell rain. Raindrops that fall on dirty soil trap small air bubbles inside them, and these bubbles carry a scent. When the air pockets rise and burst out of the droplet, the scent is released into the air, which then gets carried by the wind. The smell is called petrichor.

I can hear it coming!

The width of the thumb and hotter than the sun!

Nearly always, the rain starts to fall before the thunder is heard. Sometimes, usually in dry weather, it’s the other way around.

Although the average lightning strike in diameter is just as large as a quarter, a single bolt of lightning is five times hotter than the surface of the sun.

Lightning, and then thunder, or the other way around?

The fear of lightning is known as keraunophobia and is the third most common phobia in America. It comes after acrophobia, or fear of heights; and zoophobia, fear of animals.

Surprise. surprise, both lightning and thunder occur at the same time. Here comes the science, so keep focused. Since light travels faster than sound, you can understand that thunder will be heard even after the lightning is gone. Thunder is actually the sound lightning makes. Part of the reason some people separate thunder and lightning is that it is possible to hear thunder as far as ten miles away from the lightning that caused it! But the fact that you don’t see it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Lightning is attracted not to metal, but to the tallest thing around. If one goes fishing during a thunderstorm, they are an easy candidate for a zap, as person and rod will protrude among their surroundings. If someone wants to get hit by lightning, the best spot in the United States to accomplish that is Florida. Thanks to its geography, bordered by the ocean on three sides, you’ll find the place struck almost daily with lightning.

By the Number • New York cities get watered with approximately 47 inches of rain per year, and Monsey with approximately 51 inches annually. In the United States, the average per city is 38 inches each year. • On average, the Brooklyn experience includes 118 cloudy days every year. Monsey’s annual average is 210 days. • In the autumn of 1882, New York City broke a new rain record when it was drenched in nearly 8.5 inches of rain in one day! You can just imagine why umbrellas were useless during that downpour. • One droplet of water spends an average of eight days suspended overhead before falling back to Earth as rain. • In every minute, one billion tons of rain fall on Earth. • A forest receiving between 98 and 177 inches of rain per year is called a rainforest. Only 3% of Earth’s surface is occupied by tropical rainforests, yet they are home to more than half of our planet’s terrestrial animals. • Rain is also used to create electricity. We call this hydroelectricity, or hydropower.
