DON’T DESTROY THE DECORUM (Re: Entering With Awe) On the topic of kavod beis haknesses, I would like to voice my thoughts regarding a very serious matter that is prevalent in our community: the trend of women coming to shul on Shabbos for aufrufs and completely shattering the decorum within the shul. The socializing that occurs at times like this makes it impossible for shul-goers to follow along with the leining, answer to Barchu, or follow the rest of the davening. I strain my ears mightily to make out the words of Kaddish in the men’s section down below, and all around me there’s the rising crescendo of voices getting louder by the minute. While I’m not one to dispense mussar to others, I feel obligated to inform my fellow community members about how this behavior disrupts the atmosphere in this makom kodesh. Many people rationalize about this, stating that because it’s the ezras nashim and not in the place where the shaliach tzibbur is leading the davening it’s okay. Furthermore, they say, women are anyhow not obligated in tefillah. However, these statements stem from ignorance, and I feel it is important to bring awareness to this issue. M.W.

IT’S ALL IN THE NAME I want to bring awareness to the following in order to help people avoid the agmas nefesh and money loss we experienced. We itemize our tax deductions and listed charity donations as deductions. Unfortunately, we were audited, and although we had all the receipts, many were determined ineligible as deductions because they had been issued to Mordche, and not my husband’s legal name — Martin. Even though the last name and the address were the same, the auditors would still not allow it. I’d like people to be aware of this, and charity organizations should know to ask for a legal name when issuing receipts. (The same can apply to any legal document.) Preventing Loss

PUBLIC YICHUD AWARENESS In the current situation, with stores being locked to the public, with their shades drawn and only private appointments allowed, the circumstances could possibly be yichud. In the past few weeks, it happened twice that it was just the owner and myself in a store, and I therefore had to leave. We all hope the situation will change for the better very soon, but in the meantime, make sure you’re not transgressing halacha. B.W.

DOUSING THE FLAMES First, I just want to let you know how much my family enjoys your publication. The writing and recipes are always fantastic. You’ve never yet disappointed us! I want to make all balabustas aware that for an oil fire, chalilah, you can use simple baking soda to douse the flames. It works like magic: As soon as the fire makes contact with the baking soda, it dies immediately. I was broiling burgers in my oven recently, and the fat running down the burgers began burning. I opened the oven door, and flames leaped out. All it took was two generous shakes of the baking soda container, and b’chasdei Hashem, it was over. Store away this piece of information in case you’ll ever need it. And while I’m on the topic, I’ll mention that it’s worthwhile investing twenty to thirty dollars for a fire extinguisher. May we not need to utilize all this, and may Hashem watch over all of us. N.I.

WEEK 6:

UNDER COVER It is forbidden, writes the Shulchan Aruch, to enter a beis knesses with one’s head uncovered. At first glance, this seems simple enough. Covering one’s head — a concept with which we’re familiar — is a way to instill a small measure of seriousness, an awareness of the gravity of life and of the One looking down on us wherever we are and whatever we are engaged in. A bare head, on the other hand, carries with it a measure of carefree lightheadedness, and a lack of that seriousness. Upon closer inspection, though, this halacha seems somewhat perplexing. Why would the Shulchan Aruch need to specify that one may not enter a beis knesses bareheaded? Doesn’t the requirement to cover one’s head hold true wherever one is, no matter the setting? To answer this question, it is necessary to take a step back, turning to the earliest section of Shulchan Aruch, long before the laws of kedushas beis haknesses. There, when describing a person’s morning routine, the Shulchan Aruch writes: “V’lo yeilech arba amos b’gilui harosh — A person should not traverse four amos while his head is uncovered.” The wording is somewhat ambiguous. Is the Shulchan Aruch telling us that this is absolutely mandatory, or is he only describing what we should be doing, even though it is not an absolute obligation? The poskim are divided on this matter. The Mishnah Berurah cites both positions and advocates for the position that this is an obligation, while acknowledging[1] that

the letter of the law likely follows the opinion that it is only a proper mode of conduct.[2] To be clear, the discussion here is only regarding life in general, when one is not engaging Hakadosh Baruch Hu directly. If, however, one is actively engaged in a matter of kedusha such as reciting a bracha or tefillah, all agree that a head covering is mandatory. Today, the vast majority of our kehillos assume head coverings as a given part of our basic dress. Indeed, a clearly observant Jewish male walking around with a bare head generally raises eyebrows. Historically, there have been kehillos across the globe that did not naturally dress this way. Among many German and Sephardic communities, the practice was generally to cover one’s head only in a beis knesses or when engaged in tefillah, Torah or other matters of kedusha. These kehillos followed the opinion that as a general conduct, head coverings are not mandated, but are a strongly urged ideal. As they did not see this as absolute law, there was allowance based on circumstance, be it local anti-Jewish sentiment or other, to not insist on this conduct. It is worth noting that regardless of original reasoning, at this point the practice has gained widespread de facto acceptance, and as such, may have the status of minhag[3]. This would mean that unless one belongs specifically to a kehillah where head covering is not the norm, one cannot simply choose to stop wearing a head covering and claim reliance on those kehillos. Now, returning to the question of why the beis knesses gets special mention: According to those who rule that covering one’s head is generally recommended but not mandatory, the distinction of a beis knesses becomes clear. Unlike other areas, the beis knesses is the home of Hakadosh Baruch Hu and has an elevated status. Within these walls, a head covering is certainly mandatory. According to those who rule that a head covering is universally mandated, what distinction does a beis knesses hold? These poskim point to the specific wording of the Shulchan Aruch: The universally applied law requires a covering when traversing four amos. What about less than that, such as walking a mere foot or two? Here, the status of a beis knesses comes into play. While a head covering is generally not required for movement of less than four amos, due to the exalted nature of a beis knesses, a covering is required even

for the most minimal movements.[4] Let’s take a practical example: You’re standing in shul, having just completed Shacharis. A fellow mispallel, beginning his daily carpool dash, accidentally knocks into you and sends your yarmulke flying, causing it to land two feet away. As mentioned, many maintain that in a beis knesses, even minimal movement with an uncovered head is forbidden. What now? If someone is standing nearby, asking for assistance would likely be the simplest solution. Another solution would be to raise your arm and use your shirt or jacket sleeve as an improvised yarmulke. As far as placing your own hand or arm directly on your head — although for standard scenarios, such as walking around one’s home or other, one can rely on this — when in a beis knesses (or reciting a davar shebikedusha), using your own hand is insufficient. Interestingly, having a second person place his hand on your head is generally[5] an acceptable option.[6] Then again, you could just as well ask him to pick up your yarmulke… Rabbi Elias is a maggid shiur at the Yeshiva Gedola of Hampstead in Montreal, Canada. Rabbi Elias’ daily halacha/parsha shiur, given at the Agudah of Montreal, is available at www.TorahDownloads.com. For questions or comments, you can write to collectedaudio@gmail.com.

The Mishnah Berurah points out that this debate centers only on wearing a covering as a freestanding concept in its own right. However, if one lives in an area where non-Jews have a specific insistence on going bareheaded when showing respect, it would likely invoke the commandment of b’chukoseihem lo seileichu, requiring us to stand apart in distinction from their way of life, thereby making a head covering obligatory, not only d’Rabbanan, but actually d’Oraisa. While most of Western society today leaves their heads uncovered as a matter of taste rather than insistence, and this would not apply, up here in Quebec there is an absolute societal insistence on removing head coverings when standing before a judge or the like — and as such, this halacha would likely apply.

[2]

]3[

'‫עי' אגרות משה או"ח ח"ד סי' ב‬

]4[

'‫ראה ביאור הלכה סימן צא' סעיף ג‬

The Mishnah Berurah cites the Peri Megadim's opinion that this solution is adequate only when indoors. Suppose one was at the Kosel, where the lower portion of the plaza is dedicated for tefillah and has kedushas beis knesses. If standing in the covered portion of the Kosel area, using a friend's hand would work. If standing in the open-air section, however, one should avoid relying on this solution.

[5]

[6] The issue with using a hand is that the hand and head are essentially one entity, and it cannot be said that something is covered when its only covering is itself. Using a friend's hand or one's own sleeve would avoid this issue and would certainly be acceptable.

IN SUMMATION: 1. It is obligatory to cover one’s head when in a beis knesses. This is true regardless of whether one is engaged in tefillah or not; the very nature of the space creates the requirement. According to many poskim, this obligation holds true even when sitting in place or moving minimal distances of less than four amos. 2. If necessary, one may use a sleeve to cover one’s head. Using one’s own hand, though adequate for walking outside of a beis knesses, is not sufficient within a beis knesses. A friend’s hand, however, works even when in a beis knesses.

De Blasio Apologizes for Heightening Tensions That Promoted a Discriminatory Attitude Toward Jewish Community Months after his harsh remarks singling out the Jewish community for tough enforcement, Mayor Bill de Blasio acknowledged that he should have taken the time to speak with community leaders to promote better adherence to COVID-19 guidelines. The mayor’s remarks came during a face-to-face meeting with Jewish community leaders at Gracie Mansion last week, where he admitted that he played a part in increasing tensions between city and state officials and the Jewish community, reported VIN News. “I look back now and understand there was just more dialogue that was needed,” said the mayor. “I certainly got very frustrated at times when I saw large groups of people still out without masks. But I think more dialogue would have been better. So, I certainly want to express my regret that I didn’t figure out how to do that better.” Boro Park 24 reported that the mayor categorized the meeting as a “positive reset,” noting that he is gaining a better understanding of how the Jewish community has suffered and “the fears that people have, rightfully, of discrimination.”

Summonses Retracted as Jewish-Owned Red-Zone Businesses Unfairly Fined With enforcement agents swarming Brooklyn’s red zone on the prowl for violations, at least two reports surfaced last week of businesses whose erroneous summonses were retracted thanks to the intervention of local elected officials and others. Boro Park 24 reported that Boro Park Lumber was slapped with a “statement of charges” from the Department of Health on October 20 for being opened illegally in a red zone. It was revoked hours later, with the Department of Health issuing a letter saying that the store is considered an essential business and was therefore permitted to be open. A thank you posted by Boro Park Lumber recognized Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, Rabbi Berish Freilich, Tzvi Weill of Flatbush Shomrim, Pinny Ringel of the New York City Mayor’s Office, Yanky Meyer of Misaskim, Barry Spitzer of Community Board 12, Chaskel Bennett and Yoel Landau for their efforts. Just one day later, the owner of Mixed Greens, a kosher cafe on Coney Island Avenue and Avenue V, filmed a health inspector writing out a summons for keeping his doors open, even though he was only offering food for takeout. The video went viral after City Councilman Chaim Deutsch posted it on social media and VIN News reported that Deutsch contacted both Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Department of Health to clarify

46 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 28, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

the matter, but to no avail, a situation that he found both baffling and frustrating. “I have three zip codes in [the] red zone,” said Deutsch. “You would think they would be calling me every day to see what they can do to get the numbers down.” Deutsch was one of many who made a point of supporting Mixed Greens by stopping in to pick up an order the next day. Elan Kornblum, whose magazine Great Kosher Restaurants highlights kosher eateries, shared pictures on social media of orders that came into Mixed Greens from hundreds of miles away. One was a $50 order for 20 bagels with cream cheese that said, “I live in Arkansas and won’t be picking up. Just want to help out. Keep up the good fight.” Diedra Burke of Minnesota placed a $165 order for three large iced coffees, two large iced lattes, three bagels with cheese omelets, and two tuna supremes, asking that the food be given to passersby who looked like they needed a good breakfast. “I can’t do much from Minnesota, but I can brighten five New Yorkers’ day by surprising them with breakfast and helping Mixed Greens a little while I’m at it,” wrote Burke on social media, adding, “Happy to help!” Like the Boro Park Lumber violation, Mixed Greens’ summons was also removed. Deutsch has spared no words for the harsh manner in which inspections have been conducted with a selective focus on the Jewish community, noting that children have been frightened by their tactics and that the city has been drafting employees from various agencies to do inspections. Many of them, said Deutsch, are completely misinformed of the actual regulations in effect. “It is unconscionable that the city and state are continuing to harass small business owners, already struggling to survive due to the COVID shutdowns,” observed Deutsch. “Thousands of businesses have been forced to permanently shut their doors, and many others are on the brink. Instead of the local government directing resources to support these businesses, they are instead pursuing bogus violations and petty fines against them. Shameful and despicable behavior from local agencies.” Deutsch is offering to help others who have been unfairly ticketed and can be reached at cdeutsch@council.nyc.gov or at his office at 718-368-9176.

Polls Remain Open in Lockdown Areas on Election Day Despite the ongoing lockdowns that have schools, shuls and nonessential businesses shuttered in areas designated as COVID-19 cluster zones, polls throughout the state will remain open on Election Day, according to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s office. Governor Andrew Cuomo was asked about voting in red

zones on a Thursday conference call with reporters. Cuomo adviser Beth Garvey said voting is considered an essential activity, describing it as a constitutional right, reported Spectrum News Early voting began on October 24 and continues through November 1 with social distancing and sanitation guidelines in effect. Polling sites are open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on October 29; 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on October 30; and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on November 1. Voters can only cast their ballots at their assigned early voting site, which can be determined by visiting findmypollsite.vote.nyc or by calling the New York City Board of Elections at 212-487-5400.

Changes Coming to Out-of-State Quarantine Requirements? With high COVID-19 rates earning nearly every state in the country a spot on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s quarantine list, a potential plan has been floated to lift the fourteen-day quarantine for anyone arriving from affected areas. Cuomo suggested at a press conference last week that he is considering dropping the fourteen-day quarantine order and replacing it with rapid coronavirus testing, saying that enforcement has been very difficult, according to Democrat and Chronicle. “Better than time, you should use testing,” said Cuomo. “They have rapid tests that are very quick. It’s smarter to use testing than it is to just set timelines.” As of last week, 43 states and territories met New York’s criteria for inclusion on the quarantine list by having a minimum of ten average daily COVID-10 cases per 100,000 residents over the previous seven days or a 10% rate of positive cases. New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania have all met that threshold but were exempted from the list, with Cuomo discouraging all nonessential travel to those states while simultaneously acknowledging that it was nearly impossible and economically dangerous to close off travel completely.

Enough With the Stereotypes, Says Brooklyn Democrats After Satmar Wedding Joke Fed up with stereotypes and mistruths perpetuated by the media, Duvy Schwartz, a committee member representing Brooklyn’s 48th Assembly District, took advantage of an opportunity to enlighten his colleagues about the chasidic community’s response to the pandemic. VIN News reported that when Schwartz was not present for a roll call at a Zoom meeting last Monday night, another member of the committee jokingly explained his absence by saying he was at a “10,000-man wedding,” referring to last week’s Satmar wedding in Williamsburg. Schwartz, who was late to the meeting because he had gone to buy diapers for his baby since his wife had been home all day with their

two children in keeping with the red-zone lockdowns, heard about the comment from a few other members of the committee. “I understand that every community has bad apples, but I do know that I missed two funerals of relatives of mine, so I don’t think whoever made the joke was appropriate to include me in a 10,000-man wedding that didn’t even take place,” said Schwartz. Holding up a disposable blue face mask as he spoke, Schwartz said that he had grown weary of hearing that chassidim don’t wear masks. “I don’t know what the media is telling you, but I follow rules,” added Schwartz. The committee member apologized immediately to Schwartz, who noted that he understood that no malice had been intended. “This quip came after days and days that we are on the receiving line of baseless attacks by the media and authorities,” explained Schwartz. “We are being besmirched, mostly without any basis. It just boiled over and the pain for my community busted. We are law-abiding citizens, not media fodder.”

Cuomo Offers First Glimpse of Potential Vaccine Distribution Schedule With the possibility of a COVID-19 vaccine drawing ever closer, Governor Andrew Cuomo floated a potential timetable for distribution of the long-awaited vaccine. According to the governor, vaccines would be prioritized at three different levels, with those living in areas with high infection rates inoculated ahead of those in locations where COVID-19 is less prevalent in each category. Those at high risk for contracting the virus and essential health care workers would be first to receive the vaccine, followed by those at lower risk and other essential workers. The third phase would include the general population. Cuomo has made it abundantly clear that vaccinations could only happen with his approval. Spectrum News reported that Cuomo dismissed Mayor Bill de Blasio’s plans for distributing vaccines within New York City. “This locality says they’re going to do this,” said Cuomo. “This locality says they’re going to do this. Localities have no legal jurisdiction. That’s the law. The states are going to be responsible for administering the vaccine.” The governor has also repeatedly said that any vaccine approved by the federal government would also have to be approved by the state. “Frankly, I’m not going to trust the federal government’s opinion and I wouldn’t recommend [it] to New Yorkers based on the federal government’s opinion,” said Cuomo. “We’re going to put together our own review committee headed by the Department of Health to review the vaccine, and I’m appointing a committee that is going to come up with a vaccine distribution and implementation plan on how we will do it. New York’s response to COVID has been a model for this country, and we should also be the model vaccination program for the country.”

Chezky’s Story H OW W E

B E AT PAN DAS

What's wrong with Chezky? I watch him pace restlessly, his eyes darting nervously to and fro. Who is this jumpy, anxious eight-year-old? Chezky’s usual upbeat personality is gone. Now he's bouncing with nervous and irritable energy, punctuated by random, explosive mood swings. "Vitamins," his pediatrician advises. I run to the pharmacy to buy the vitamins the doctor recommends, a prayer on my lips.

Chezky is beginning to show symptoms of OCD, and his restlessness is at an all-time high.

The vitamins don't help at all. A week later, we're back at the doctor's office. Chezky is beginning to show symptoms of OCD, and his restlessness is at an all-time high. His siblings have learned to tiptoe around him, afraid of being the reason for yet another outburst. Chezky's doctor orders a full panel of blood work as well as a throat culture. The strep culture comes back negative. The blood work shows that his ASO titers and DNase levels are elevated, indicating a recent strep infection in his blood. These results and his OCD and ADHD symptoms lead the doctor to a diagnosis: Chezky has PANDAS. PANDAS occurs when the child's immune system produces antibodies to attack strep bacteria and it also fights the regular bacteria. Some of these antibodies head to the brain, causing OCD, tics, and other neuropsychiatric symptoms.

The doctor prescribes a 30-day round of Zithromax. I hold Chezky's hand tight as we leave the clinic, feeling hopeful. I'm certain that we've kicked this terrifying episode to the curb. The antibiotics do their job for 30 days. Chezky seems calmer, almost like his usual, relaxed self. As soon as the 30 days of antibiotics are done, Chezky's tics and restlessness return with a vengeance. Panicking, I confer with the doctor, who prescribes another 30 days of Zithromax. The medication is not as effective as the first time around and as soon as we complete the 30 days of medication, all the symptoms return, worse than before. Chezky's eye tics, his OCD, his anxiety, and restlessness all come roaring back. "I don't know what to say," the pediatrician says. "It seems to be an autoimmune issue. Perhaps try a gluten-free diet?" We convene with a different doctor in the clinic who prescribes Augmentin. I give it to Chezky for 30 days but there are no positive changes to his condition. Desperate and determined, I stop into a Williamsburg health food store and purchase all the holistic treatments the salesperson recommends. Doctors or no doctors, I will find a cure for my son.

What is Imbue? Imbue is a center where we combine aromatherapy, massage techniques and essential oils to ease physical, mental and emotional ailments.

What are aromatherapy and essential oils? Aromatherapy is a treatment where we apply essential oils to your skin. Essential oils are natural derivatives from flowers, herbs and trees that are infused with incredible healing qualities.

How does the treatment work? We run a test to find out which essential oils will work best for your body. Then, our trained practitioner uses a combo of aromatherapy and massage therapy to gently apply the treatments to your skin.

How often can I receive essential oil treatment? You can receive treatment twice a week, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or seasonally. We listen to your body’s needs to determine the direction of the treatment.

Which essential oils do you use? The standard Raindrop Technique used by many practitioners consists of a basic combination of essential oils. At Imbue, we create a customized essential oil blend.

Can my family member perform the treatment for me or can I perform the treatment for my child? Our practitioners are extensively trained and certified to perform the Raindrop Technique. Our comprehensive knowledge and experience with customizing the specific oils give us the utmost confidence that not just anyone can provide our services.

After how many treatments can I expect to see a difference? It’s impossible to predict, as the results depend on multiple factors, such as symptoms, severity, frequency, etc. The majority of our clients have seen improvements within the first month.

What are some conditions of previous clients? We have successfully helped clients with PANDAS, Lyme disease, migraines, back pain, anxiety, colitis, acid reflux and many more.

Other than the Raindrop Technique, what other services does Imbue offer? We will soon be offering a full array of therapeutic massages at our upscale facility, including Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal, medical, hot stone, and more.

Back home, I call everyone I know, searching for someone anyone - who might have the answers I need. With no information forthcoming, we try a fermented food diet and then a gluten-free diet. But the tics are more severe than ever, and the diets don't seem to help much, so we give up on that tactic, too. I'm at a dead end. My son is suffering. His siblings want their old Chezky back. His Rebbi has been kind and patient throughout the ordeal, but he's at a loss dealing with a nine-year-old who hasn't learned steadily for nearly a year. That's it, I resolve. I must put an end to this. I dive into the research again and come across a story about a mother whose child experienced a similar ordeal. Excited and hopeful, I reach out to her to find out what method she used to heal her child. "It's called the Raindrop Technique," she explains over the phone. This method involves using essential oils and massages to reduce inflammation and kill viruses and bacteria in the spine. I purchase the oils and later that week, begin the regimen. The improvement is instant! I can hardly believe the transformation that’s happening before my eyes. After the first treatment, Chezky calms down significantly. Diligently, I apply the treatments and become familiar with the oils’ and massages’ healing properties. Within two months, Chezky is entirely symptom-free. Our beloved Chezky is back! It's now five years later. With Hashem's help, Chezky hasn't experienced a single flare-up. We put the matter to rest, glad that it's all behind us. And then I get a phone call. My aunt is on the line, asking me about Chezky's PANDAS experience. One of her kids is exhibiting symptoms, and she needs guidance. I launch into an impassioned speech about the Raindrop Technique and how much it helped us. "If it helped you this much," she says," why aren't you helping others find this incredible cure?" She's right, I realize. And Imbue was born. At our center, we use a potent combination of aromatherapy and massage therapy to gently bring our clients back to health. With the help of our certified practitioners, we've helped many children by using the Raindrop Technique. Today we operate two locations, one in Boro Park and one in Williamsburg. Our office phone continually rings with people asking questions about various ailments. We do our best to help guide them in finding the antidote for their pain and suffering. Over time, we've fine-tuned and customized our services. We digitally scan each patient to correctly match them with the oils that they need most. The significant results are a welcome reprieve for our clients. Many of them have been searching for a cure for a long while. One of our clients had kidney surgery scheduled. She came to Imbue for treatment, saying that she has nothing to lose. After a month of treatment, her scans came back completely cleared, and her surgery was BH canceled! The Raindrop Technique has helped many. If you or anyone you know is suffering and in pain, give Imbue a call at 718.666.3963 or email us at info@imbueny.com. We'll help guide you to a complete recovery.

Recap: Elisheva and Blumi become fast friends. After receiving the address of Edo’s orphanage from Ulush, Gustav travels from his orphanage in Yerushalayim to Bnei Brak to give Edo the information about his uncles. Upon seeing Edo from afar, however, he chickens out and leaves the place. He decides to try finding Edo’s uncles on his own, with the hope that they will get to Edo without Gustav having to be visibly involved at all. Gustav’s counselor looked at the trembling boy standing before him. “I am very surprised at you…” he said quietly. “To disappear like that for a whole day? Do you have any idea how much we searched for you yesterday?” “I had to,” Gustav whispered. “I knew you wouldn’t let me go.” “And we do let you leave without permission?” the counselor asked logically. Gustav was quiet. His eyes glistened, and the counselor didn’t know if he was about to let loose. That’s what it looked like, even though until then Gustav had always been a refined, obedient boy. But Gustav remained silent; only his eyelids trembled a bit. “Where did you go?” “I rode…” Gustav said. “You rode? On a bus?” A nod. “Where to?” “Bnei Brak.” “Where did you have money from?” “From Friday’s candy money.” “So you needed to save up for three weeks.” “No, I asked four boys for their money.” The counselor’s eyes narrowed. “You

just asked them? And they agreed to give it to you?” “I promised to do all kinds of things for them in exchange.” “Like what?” “Washing dishes instead of them, cleaning their rooms, taking notes for them in class…” “That is not alright at all, but let’s leave that for a moment. What did you go for? What were you looking for in Bnei Brak?” The sheen in the boy’s eyes dimmed somewhat, and Gustav leaned against the wall. He looked a bit pale, almost white. “Do you feel okay?” the counselor asked, even as he suspected it was a charade. “No.” The boy was shaking violently now. “I’m terribly cold.” For three days, Gustav continued to claim that he was terribly cold. But when his temperature was taken, there did not seem to be any logical reason for the sudden chill that had overtaken him. But on the fourth day, visitors to the small infirmary in the orphanage no longer suspected a charade. The boy’s temperature had gone up at night, and he was shaking from the cold, even when covered with a pile of blankets.

“Severe pneumonia,” the nurse said compassionately. “I had it once before,” the boy whispered. “His lungs are weak,” Dr. Wabronsky told the worried orphanage director, who had come down to the infirmary. Gustav did not know if they had heard him. “I’m not sure he can withstand it…” Did that mean he would die? The first time he had been sick, the paper had been destroyed, and the names of Edo’s uncles had been erased. What would happen now, if he himself would die? The nurse approached with a thermometer and a cup of tea. Gustav refused to swallow even one sip. He closed his eyes weakly, allowing his thoughts to carry him back to those long-ago days in the Jewish hospital in Bratislava. Ulush Cohen had been there with him, he remembered. She had also given him tea, and she had also looked at him with very sad eyes. He coughed, and the nurse pulled the spoon back. “Yosef Ludmir.” He tried to utter the words. As it was, his hacking cough cut him off every few seconds. “Tell him. Yosef Ludmir. Ludmir. From… I don’t remember the street.” He wheezed again. “In Bratislava… number ten. That is the name. Yosef Lud… Lud… Ludmir.” The director of the orphanage, who was standing at the door and talking to Dr. Wabronsky, turned his head toward Gustav and the nurse. “What did he say?” he asked. The nurse glanced at the boy. “A name.” “Yosef Ludmir,” the boy murmured again, a glassy sheen covering his eyes. “We need to find…” “Ludmir from Bratislava? Is that his real name?” “I don’t think so,” the nurse said. “He wasn’t talking about

himself. Maybe he means that he wants to find this Yosef Ludmir.” ***** “Elisheva? We’re in Bnei Brak. Can I come over?” Devorah glanced at her mother, whose eyes were darting around in alarm. “Who’s on the phone?” she mouthed.

“Batsheva didn’t come to Eretz Yisroel this time; her parents came alone.” Elisheva took a deep breath and looked around. Everything looked okay, more or less. The kitchen and dining room were clean, and all she could do was hope that Blumi Hartstein would not want a tour of the other rooms. She didn’t. Or if she did, she didn’t say anything.

The first time he had been sick, the paper had been destroyed, and the names of Edo’s uncles had been erased. What would happen now, if he himself would die? Her mother didn’t answer her. “Yes, yes,” she said hastily into the phone, and then passed a hand across her forehead. “But my husband isn’t here right now.” “Oh, of course; I’m only talking about myself. So I’ll be over in a short while, okay?” “Why didn’t you ask her what a ‘short while’ means?” Devorah asked, as she whizzed around the house with the broom. It was actually quite clean, but not very neat. After lunch, the little ones had spread out on the floor with the latest circulars, sheets of paper, glue and scissors, and had made projects whose detritus now littered the entire floor. “And why didn’t she bring her daughter Batsheva with her?” Not that Devorah knew the daughter, but she was quite familiar with her mother’s friend’s stories about her youngest child. Blumi had wanted to know if any of Elisheva’s daughters were Batsheva’s age, because maybe they would want to be pen pals with each other. Devorah and Riki — and honestly, Batsheva too — had not been very enamored with the idea, and it never panned out.

“What a lovely house!” she said as she sat on the sofa, ramrod-straight. “And the balcony… what a view you have from here! It’s wonderful. Those are the Judean and Samarian Hills over there, aren’t they? Oh, thank you, dear.” She smiled at Devorah, who was serving cold water and some slices of yeast cake. “The visibility is very good today, so we can see the mountains in the distance. It doesn’t happen often.” Elisheva sat down beside her. She hadn’t rested today after work, but what could she do? It was better that Blumi was here now, when the boys were still in cheder and the house was relatively quiet. Blumi could have asked to come during suppertime or bedtime, and that really would have been difficult. “You can put a curtain here,” Blumi suggested. “My daughters bought me new curtains for my last birthday, and I enjoy them so much. Something beautiful in green and maroon would work well in this area.” She studied the glass doors with her head tilted to the side. “And it would also match your couch.” “That’s true,” Elisheva said,

looking at the soft tones of mauve and maroon of her new couch. “I don’t know whether you’d be able to find that kind of fabric in Eretz Yisroel, though. Maybe I’ll send you some from London. The type that I’m thinking of comes out to about eight hundred shekels a meter, if I’m not mistaken. I’ll check for you.” “Thanks, but really, it’s all right.” Elisheva smiled. “I’ll let my daughters find a birthday present for me on their own. I think that if they’d want to buy me curtains, there are plenty of pretty fabrics here that they could choose from.” “Yes, you’ve got some good stores here, as well,” Blumi agreed. “But it will be more expensive, from the prices I’ve seen.” “We can buy ready-made curtains, too.” Elisheva suppressed a smile, wondering what Devorah and Riki were thinking as they watched their mother sit down on a random afternoon with a plate of cake, discussing couches, curtains, fabrics and stores… But her guest was already onto the next subject: the floors. Very cultural conversation, to be sure. “So the floor was already in when you got the apartment,” Blumi murmured. “That’s what you told me, right?” “That’s right,” Elisheva affirmed. “It’s good marble. Very high quality. Interesting.” “Interesting?” “When you told me that you won this apartment at a Chinese auction, I didn’t expect to see something so large, and you know, I understand these kinds of things.” She gave a wry smile. “Your simplicity, Elisheva, which I love so much, also shines through. But this apartment is very luxurious, just so you know.” Elisheva had half a mind to ask where Blumi was seeing this simplicity that she was referring to, but then, through the glass,

curtain-less doors to the porch, she caught sight of the row of well-used bikes and riding toys. She glanced at the table, with the glue stains peeking through the holes of the lace tablecloth, and at the new chairs they had bought. Comfortable, durable, wooden chairs, but certainly nothing close to Blumi’s standards. And she relaxed. “I don’t know what to tell you,”

questions… I don’t have any answers.” “Who had told you that you won?” “Someone from U’shemartem.” “Were you at their office?” “No, we had to go to a lawyer’s office.” “Interesting. Which lawyer?” “I forgot his name,” Elisheva said ruefully. “The office was on

This was Blumi Hartstein, her new friend. So why did she feel like she was being questioned by the police? Blumi said. “But I am familiar with the U’shemartem organization. We’ve donated to them a few times, and we visited their main office. They have resources, of course, but I don’t remember that this was the standard of apartments that they usually raffled off.” “So what is the standard?” Blumi pondered the question for a moment, and Elisheva suddenly realized that this was the first time since she had become acquainted with this woman that she was not getting an immediate answer from Blumi. “I don’t know,” she said finally. “Maybe they grew a bit in the last few years. They’re the type to give a nice, large apartment, painted well, and with a voucher for furniture. But such a beautiful kitchen is unusual, as are the marble floors and the large amount of credit for furnishings. Do you see what I’m saying?” “Yes.” “And besides, it makes the most sense for the apartment to be in Yerushalayim, no? Why Bnei Brak?” “We also wondered about all these questions,” Elisheva said slowly. “Nu?” “And we were left with the

Ben-Pesachya Street. What was his name? It was a short name — that much I remember…” “Was a representative of the organization there too?” Blumi asked. Elisheva leaned back. No, she was not under interrogation. This was Blumi Hartstein, her new friend. So why did she feel like she was being questioned by the police? “Yes, of course.” “What was his name?” “Aharon Moshe Weil. He’s the one whose signature is on their letters and catalogs and everything. I think he’s the deputy chairman or something.” “Interesting. And did they take photos of you?” If Blumi would say, “Interesting” one more time, she would scream. “They took pictures with my husband, but he only agreed to that on the condition that it would be just for their records and not be publicized.” The interrogator didn’t say anything, and her phone rang just then. “Hello?” she said, and continued in rapid-fire English. Elisheva just sat there, trying to collect her composure, which was now completely in tatters. To be continued...

Trump and Biden Debate Issues of Substance THE PULSE: On Thursday, October 22, President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden squared off in the second and final debate of this election cycle. Unlike the first debate, which mostly descended into bickering and shouting, the second debate focused on substantive issues. Some of the topics and the divergent views of the candidates will be highlighted below. COVID-19 RESPONSE: Joe Biden criticized the Trump administration’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden accused the president of a late reaction to the virus and of constantly downplaying its severity. Biden also called out the president for his failure to promote mask-

58 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 28, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

wearing and social distancing. Biden said he would not shut down the country but rather set policy based on scientists’ and epidemiologists’ advice. He argued that a proper economic recovery could not transpire before the virus is tamed. The president responded that Biden’s approach would inevitably shut down the economy and cause financial harm. He defended the approach of his administration in securing PPE and attaining ventilators. The president highlighted his administration’s work on therapeutics and vaccine development. The president also insisted that he quickly shut down travel to China when the virus first broke out. Biden’s approach to COVID-19 focuses primarily on halting the virus’s spread while the president’s strategy focuses on attempting to get the country back to normal and preventing economic damage. HEALTH CARE: President Trump promised to replace

the ACA/Obamacare with a much better health care system at a much lower price. The president promised that he would protect Americans with preexisting conditions. The president also claimed that should Biden win the election, America would transition to a system of socialized medicine. Joe Biden countered that the Trump administration is currently in court trying to get Obamacare overturned. He argued that millions of Americans would lose their insurance if the ACA is overturned, placing those with preexisting conditions at risk. Biden pointed out that the president has never presented a detailed health care plan in his four years in office. And in the two years that Republicans held complete control of the entire federal government, they failed to present a comprehensive plan to replace Obamacare. Biden also forcefully fought back against the notion that he is a proponent of socialized medicine. He argued that he ran against Medicare for All in the Democratic primary and won the primary. Biden asserted that while he opposes Medicare for All, he favors a public option that would allow Americans to buy into Medicare coverage if they chose to do so. RACE RELATIONS: President Trump touted his pol-

icy positions that have been beneficial for the African American community. He highlighted his administration’s work setting up opportunity zones in low-income neighborhoods, supporting historically black colleges, and the First Step Act’s successful passage. President Trump argued that Joe Biden’s support for the 1994 crime bill caused much harm to black communities. Biden hit back at Trump and accused him of demonizing the Black Lives Matter movement. He also slammed Trump for his failure to apologize for his attacks on the Central Park Five who were subsequently found innocent. ENVIRONMENT: The president attacked Biden and his

running mate Kamala Harris for their approach to environmental issues. He claimed that their environmental plans would be costly and hobble economic growth. He contended that Joe Biden would ban the extraction of shale oil and natural gas via fracking, and that under Biden, America would no longer be energy-independent. Biden countered that he has never advocated for banning fracking on private land. Biden argued that America must take a leading role on environmental issues. He claimed that a renewed focus on clean and renewable energy would be a source of economic strength and job creation. Biden pledged to rejoin the Paris climate accord and leverage being a participant to the treaty to ensure that all signatories abide by their commitments. Biden said that he would “transition away from the oil industry.” He qualified that statement by saying, “We are not going to get rid of fossil fuels.” IMMIGRATION: Biden hammered the president over his record on family separations at the border. Biden claimed that there are currently 545 children separated from their parents. He alleged that the government has lost track of

the parents and is unable to reunite them. Biden called the policy of child separation “criminal.” Biden also promised to reinstate the Deffered Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) and provide a pathway for citizenship for those who have entered the country as children. Trump responded that many of the children who cannot be reunited with their parents were brought to the country by smugglers and not by their parents. He hit Biden for the Obama administration’s building of cage-like detention pens to hold illegal immigrants caught at the border. FOREIGN POLICY: President Trump argued that his tough-on-China tariffs had had the desired effect in reigning in the communist nation. He argued that his Phase One trade deal had brought tangible benefits to Americans, particularly in the area of intellectual property rights. Biden countered that our current trade deficit with China is more extensive than it has ever been. Furthermore, he claimed that tariffs placed on Chinese goods are paid by American consumers who pay more for imported goods, and not by the Chinese who export the goods. Biden alleged that Trump’s China policies have adversely affected American farmers and that soy farmers would have suffered economic ruin if not for the financial bailout they received from the Trump administration. Concerning North Korea, the president claimed that his dialogue with Kim Jong Un prevented the outbreak of hostilities on the Korean peninsula. He also took pride in his friendly relationship with the North Korean dictator. Biden argued that Trump cozied up to a mass murderer with little to show for it. He claimed that North Korea continues to test and develop missiles and that with relaxed American pressure on them, they are free to continue with their nefarious designs. HUNTER BIDEN: President Trump brought up a recently discovered laptop with emails that seemingly tie Joe Biden to some of his son’s business dealings in Ukraine. The president also highlighted the comments of Tony Bobulinski, a former associate of Hunter Biden, who backed up the contents of the emails. Biden responded that “I have not taken a penny from any foreign source, ever, in my life,” and that none of Hunter’s dealings were unethical. He labeled the allegations as Russian disinformation propaganda. He challenged the president to be forthcoming about his foreign entanglements by releasing his tax returns. Biden asserted that this election was ultimately not about his family or the president’s family, but rather the American family. THE IMPACT: The indisputable winner of the debate was the moderator Kristen Welkner. She received accolades from across the political spectrum for her even-handed temperament and her ability to keep the discussion informative and focused on the issues. President Trump turned in a solid performance. Many political observers felt that he strongly made his case without reverting to over-thetop rhetoric. He may have succeeded in winning over some undecided voters. Joe Biden also had a strong perfor-

mance and showed that he had a clear command of the issues. Both candidates had the performance that they needed to have. Trump showed that he could be presidential and made a case for reelection based on policy. Biden showed that he is not the frail, confused older man his opponents attempt to make him out to be. Both candidates checked the boxes they had to check, and there were no obvious gaffes or mess-ups. The viewership for the second debate dropped to 63 million, down from the 73 million that watched the first debate. The result was considered pretty much a draw, and it is unlikely that it will significantly impact the political environment in either direction.

Trump Announces IsraelSudan Normalization Agreement THE PULSE: President Trump announced that his

administration achieved a breakthrough agreement between Israel and Sudan. This is the third agreement between Israel and an Arab country that his administration has brought to fruition. The Trump administration agreed to remove Sudan from the list of state sponsors of terror. Sudan agreed to pay $350 million in restitution to American victims of terror and their families. The agreement aroused opposition in Sudan, with the country’s largest party slamming the deal. The leader of the National Umma Party, former Prime Minister Sadiq al-Mahdi, said that he would oppose the deal. Sudan’s acting Foreign Minister Omar Qamar al-Din stressed that the legislature must still ratify the deal. Until the agreement is approved, normalization cannot become a reality. “This is an agreement to normalize. It is not yet normalization,” he said in a statement. THE IMPACT: The agreement with Sudan has the potential to be truly historic. Sudan declared war on Israel in the 1948 War of Independence and the 1967 Six-Day War. The Sudanese capital of Khartoum was the location of the infamous 1967 Arab League Khartoum Resolution of the Three Nos. “No peace with Israel, no recognition of Israel, and no negotiations with Israel.” Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that Sudan’s current agreement on the heels of agreements with the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain now comprises the Three Yeses. The proposed deal shows that President Trump places concern for Israel’s welfare and betterment at the center of his foreign policy agenda. The agreements with Arab countries that the Trump administration has cultivated have strengthened Israel’s position vis-a-vis the Palestinians. These deals also serve to blunt BDS activists’ efforts to isolate Israel in international forums.

SOUPS TO S AVO R

Hello, winter. Hello, hearty bowls of warm and comforting soup. There’s nothing like the homey comfort of enjoying a warming bowl of soup, especially when the cold creeps in; they’re spoonfuls of soothing goodness on chilly days. And they’re worth it just for the aromatic smells that permeate the house as they simmer and bubble on the stove. There are some soup recipes that require a long simmer, but not all soups have to be cooked for hours on end for a delicious final product. These homemade soups are actually some of the simplest recipes you can make.

INGREDIENTS 1 large butternut squash (about 3 pounds), halved vertically and deseeded 1 T. olive oil, plus more for drizzling Salt and pepper, divided ½ cup (about 1 large bulb) chopped shallot 4 garlic cloves, pressed or minced 1 tsp. maple syrup 3–4 cups vegetable broth, as needed (or 3–4 tsp. chicken consomme and 3–4 cups boiling water) 1–2 T. margarine, to taste Roasted sunflower seeds (optional) DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 425°, and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the butternut squash in the pan and drizzle each half with just enough olive oil to lightly coat the squash on the inside (about ½ teaspoon each). Rub the oil over the insides of the squash, and sprinkle it with salt and pepper. 2. Turn the squash facedown and roast until it is tender and completely cooked through, about 40 to 50 minutes (don’t worry if the skin or flesh browns — that’s good for flavor). Set the squash aside until it’s cool enough to handle. 3. Meanwhile, in a large soup pot, warm 1 tablespoon olive oil over medium heat until it shimmers. Add the chopped shallot and 1 teaspoon salt. Cook, stirring often, until the shallot has softened and is starting to turn golden at the edges, about 3 to 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute, stirring frequently. 4. Use a large spoon to scoop the butternut squash into your pot. Discard the tough skin. Add the maple syrup and a few pinches of ground black pepper. Pour in 3 cups of vegetable broth. 5. Using an immersion blender, blend on high. Stop once the soup is ultra-creamy and warmed through. You can garnish the soup with some toasted sunflower seeds when serving.

In a 6-quart pot, bring broth to a boil over medium heat. Combine cornstarch and water until smooth. Gradually stir into broth. 2. Bring to a boil. Cook and stir for 2 minutes or until thickened. 3. My heart began to thrum with worry. Three of his knuckles were swollen to double their size. The dirty dishes and Magna-Tiles strewn all over the floor faded into the background. What was wrong with my child? It was during the mayhem of supper-bath-bedtime when my elevenyear-old son Shimmy approached me, a glimmer of worry in his blue eyes. “Ma, my knuckles are stiff,” he complained. I was stirring the soup absentmindedly when I took a look and stopped. The sight of his swollen knuckles got me nervous. They just didn’t look right. Our pediatrician checked it out and advised us to wait a bit before doing anything drastic. “Maybe they’re just bruised; give his fingers a chance to heal.” But the next few days found the swelling spreading to Shimmy’s other hand, and our feeling of unease intensified. It was uncomfortable and strange and really getting in the way. We had to get to the root of the issue. Shimmy was tested for strep and Lyme disease, but all the bloodwork came back negative. Confusion and anxiety hung over us like a heavy storm cloud. Our next step was a top rheumatologist in Columbia Hospital. As we entered, I hoped this visit would provide the answer we so desperately sought for my child in pain, but I couldn’t have imagined the dreary diagnosis.

After checking Shimmy’s fingers, the rheumatologist lifted her eyes to look at us, as if weighing her words. C’mon, tell us already! I thought impatiently. “We will have to do a lot of bloodwork to be sure,” she stated, “but it looks to me like serious juvenile arthritis. This can come from stress or heart problems…” The doctor continued listing information and statistics, but I tuned her out. Arthritis? It couldn’t be! Her voice was impassioned as she prepared ten (ten!) vials to take blood from my son’s skinny arm. “It won’t get better; we can only work to keep it under control.” As my heart thudded in alarm, she declared that the arthritis would likely spread to Shimmy’s feet, leading to trouble with walking in addtion to writing. Unfortunately, steroids and other strong medications with long-lasting effects would be our only option to keep this monster at bay. We left the rheumatologist’s office feeling terrified. I looked at my son, his blond head lowered. How could it be? He had been so healthy and full of life just mere days ago. Now we were waiting in the dark for a diagnosis that might change his life forever. We were also directed to a cardiologist, in whose office Shimmy lay, pale as a puppet, while an EKG was performed, belying the exuberance he’d displayed just a week before. It was late that night when I poured out my worries to my best sounding boards, aka my dear sisters. One of them piped up and asked, “Dina, why don’t you try Sar-

WHAT IS THE SARNO METHOD? Dr. John Sarno was a wellknown specialist in rehabilitation medicine during the late 1900s. He came up with a revolutionary concept that would transform thousands of lives. He believed that a person’s brain uses pain to distract them from experiencing and dealing with negative emotions. We may not want to think about the fact that we hate our job or are struggling with money, so we focus on our physical pain instead. This can then manifest itself in a variety of debilitating symptoms, including chronic back pain, gastrointestinal issues and fibromyalgia. Dr. Sarno also believed that pain is caused by decreased oxygen and blood flow to muscles and nerves, and that the brain keeps the oxygen away to create that pain. He called this “tension myoneural syndrome,” or TMS. He believed that most people could conquer their discomfort simply by recognizing its psychosomatic roots and then acting upon that knowledge. Therefore, he encouraged his patients to keep a journal or seek therapy that would enable them to have a clearer understanding of their repressed emotions. Once they accepted and worked on these hidden troubles, he said, their pain would magically disappear. Another novel piece of advice he gave for back pain was to resume all physical activity. As a reminder, Dr. Sarno stated, “It is important to see a medical professional before starting this treatment approach to rule out any serious medical condition.” Although there were many naysayers who ridiculed him at first, his idea gained huge popularity over the years, as patients worldwide thanked Sarno for giving them a new lease on life after all else had failed. Research has established a concrete mind-body connection, with effective techniques offering faster and complete relief for stress-related medical issues. Channeling your brain to overcome your pain can change your life.

no’s method?” (See sidebar for more details.) “For arthritis?” My voice was unsure. We had grown up with belief in the “Sarno system,” and it had actually entered my mind as a solution — but I’d quickly dismissed it, thinking it wouldn’t help in Shimmy’s case. Our introduction to this technique came when my father underwent back surgery for a slipped disc, only to have the agony return full force a couple of years later. He was introduced to Sarno’s method at the time, actually meeting the doctor in person, and had never looked back. Later, he found out that the majority of backaches, unless there are other symptoms involved, are the outcome of suppressed emotions and stress. Now I looked at the inky-black sky dotted with shining stars. We would try this. We had to try this. I yearned to see the glow back in Shimmy’s eyes.

After checking Shimmy’s fingers, the rheumatologist lifted her eyes to look at us, as if weighing her words. I had heard of a kind chassidish man named Mr. Illowitz, who had thrown himself into helping people reach recovery through the steps Dr. Sarno established. Mr. Illowitz had set up a telephone line, where for $99 one could listen to clear and detailed explanations of the method in Yiddish or English. There were also teleconferences every few weeks, homework to guide listeners further, and a “statement” to recite. I reached out to Mr. Illowitz, and to my surprise, he emphatically directed us to go for it, arthritis and all. He was confident that with this and our tefillos, Shimmy’s symptoms would soon be gone. The only obstacle was that the program was geared to ages twelve and up, and my son was eleven. Still, I knew that Shimmy’s emotional intelligence and maturity were way beyond his actual age, so with hope in our hearts, we decided to go ahead. Shimmy listened intently to the recordings and did the homework diligently each day. Since he is quite emotionally aware, he was able to reach the deepest recesses of his inner self. We learned that pain can be caused by repressed emotions or unpleasant feelings. The brain wants us to feel happy, so it deprives oxygen from a physical part of the body so we will focus on that instead of on the demons within us. It usually happens to perfectionists and people-pleasers. For example, Shimmy used to study with a weaker boy before bechinos or tests, but then he would feel resentful that he lost out on his own growth and fun with his group of friends. Now he had to accept those feelings buried deep inside. I cheered him on and told him that the thoughts he wrote were for his eyes only, and that he could tear them up afterward. He would also recite a “statement” every day. It read “Physically, there is nothing wrong with me; I am healthy as any boy my age. It’s only stress! … I

myself to do it for his sake. There was no discussion, no thinking, no ruminating and no worrying, just a soft reminder of the daily homework. At the end of the second week, I finally took a good, geshmak look at Shimmy’s fingers — and gaped. They were basically back to their regular shape and size! “Thank You, Hashem!” I whispered, overcome with gratitude. Over two years have passed since that fateful time. The arthritis did not spread, nor did it ever come back. Instead, it has been completely healed! I sometimes imagine going back to the rheumatologist who told us that it would not get better, that he would need powerful steroids. If only she could see my thriving son now, our budding pride and joy. Since then life has continued, with its fair share of bumps along its ride. I have found myself employing Sarno’s method for my own back pain that flared up during this corona period, after my last baby. I have the “statement” hanging on my kitchen wall, and my five-year-old runs around saying “I have stress!” I educate even my younger children about this mind-body connection and work on discovering the root causes of minor aches and pains. I love telling and retelling my miracle story and can sincerely say that there are no drawbacks when working with this method. Nevertheless, it is hard work to open oneself up to vulnerabilities and completely believe in being healed. Many people prefer a quick-fix Tylenol for a heavy migraine or the like. It’s usually when one is at their wits’ end and nothing else is working that people stumble upon this wonder remedy and feel whole once again. Also, a great side benefit that this brings is the awareness of and the ability to sort out one’s emotions. It’s important to know that sometimes, at the least stressful times, the pain will intensify. The reason for this is simple. Come Pesach time, my middle-aged neighbor is as joyous and energetic as ever. Her children and einiklach bounce around, eating and laughing and sharing the bond called family. She feels great. But a week after yom tov ends, she always comes down with intense migraines. Her brain notices that life has calmed down, that there are fewer distractions, and so it increases her physical pain to ensure that she won’t have the headspace to accept the fact that her son-in-law is lazy, that she has gained too much weight, and so on. The journey is constant, but every day I lift my eyes heavenward and thank Hashem for His guiding hand that has enabled us to unleash the freedom deep within so that we can embrace His goodness with outstretched arms.

I looked at the inky-black sky dotted with shining stars. We would try this. We had to try this. won’t allow you to take over...” Two long weeks passed, and we saw no change. I felt a hopeless feeling bubble inside me and quickly dialed Mr. Illowitz. “It’s not working!” I complained. “His fingers look just the same!” “But why are you thinking about it?” he chastised me. “Why are you checking them out? The worry is passing to your son.” He ordered me to completely erase my concerns from my mind. “Lach dich ois — laugh it off!” he instructed. Now I had to work on myself. If I was anxiously awaiting results, they weren’t going to arrive so easily. Boy, this was going to be a challenge. I set myself a goal of two weeks. I literally held back from looking at Shimmy so I wouldn’t be tempted to look at his hands. It was grueling, but I forced

Ever watched a really good argument between two people blessed with personal conviction? You listen to the first one and you nod, “Yes! Yes! That’s exactly how I feel! YES!” Then the next person picks up the mic, and suddenly your head is doing that same jog in place again. “Yes! Yes! I mean… I don’t know how, but you’re right, too!” Let’s talk about a parent favorite: sleep routines. We’ll share some helpful tidbits and common wisdom — and then we’ll also add a “but” to each one... Ready?

ADEQUATE SLEEP IS CRUCIAL

Okay, but you knew that already. For some of us it took longer than others to admit that lack of sleep for us — forget about the kids — is the difference between our kids having a witch for a mother or… well, a mother. And we’re adults. So I think we’re all in agreement about how important adequate sleep is for our children, too. What we heatedly argue about, then, is not if it’s important, but how important. Is it more important than the child’s social life? Should we force a child into bed when he’s not tired? Should we call in our children while the rest of their friends are still playing outside? And what about (brace yourselves, ladies, it’s coming) teenagers?

and there is no need to fight for every task to get done. Sure, setting the routine in place initially might be hard, but the benefits are reaped big-time.

THE “BUT”: There is a critical differ-

ence between routine and rigidity, and it’s not always easy to tell the two apart.

BEDTIME ROUTINE FOR DUMMIES

Honestly, I always kind of secretly mocked mothers who would wax poetic about rigid bedtime routines. I figured either they were still under the age of 27 (the approximate developmental stage when you think you got parenting and shalom bayis down pat and wish you could teach the rest of the world), or they were too rigid for their own good. It took my sister about fifteen years and seven kids, but she finally convinced me to try. What can I tell you, it works. But you really do have to be rigid. It really does need to be that same boring, unchanging routine. Every. Single. Night. So point number one is: No, you do not need to be a “routine kind of person” for it to work. It just works, regardless of who you are. In a nutshell, you need to create a very, very set routine

Back to the pillow, bottle, hand it back to Mommy, turn to the wall, and — poof! The kid is sleeping.

ROUTINE IS A BOUNDARY By now we are all aware that boundaries make our children feel safer. Well, what do you know, a sleep routine is a boundary too. A child whose day is orderly and predictable is a far happier and calmer child. And this boundary is amazing for the mother, too — bedtime becomes smooth,

86 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 28, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

that takes at least fifteen minutes and is implemented at the same time every night. (I know, right?) In our house, it’s baths (okay, I’ll admit we don’t do baths every night), pajamas, put clothes in hamper (sigh, I just lied again), brush teeth, get into bed. Choose two books, bedtime story. Wiggle onto Mommy’s lap, Krias Shema, goodnight hug and kiss. Back to the pillow, bottle, hand it back to Mommy, turn to the wall, and — poof! The kid is sleeping. I know, it sounds impossible, but it really does work. Until you decide to drop storytime just for tonight because it’s a busy night. Then you’ll spend two hours convincing your kid that he’s not really hungry and thirsty and bored and get-back-into-bed-I-said!

MOMMY SUBSTITUTE I probably shouldn’t share this tip, because I’m all for children having as much mommy-time as possible. Bedtime routines usually impose that, and that’s wonderful. However, if storytime doesn’t work for you, or you want to move on to the next child faster, you can have one step include a CD in bed. Once the children get used to it, it will lull them to sleep. To counteract the diminished mommy-time, I used to record myself as I read the children stories. Then the children would fall asleep listening to my stories (and whatever tidbits of hashkafah the ensuing conversations included) again. The added benefit was that no matter what my day was like and how harried and unfriendly I was when I sent them to bed, what they fell asleep to was my calm, loving voice telling them stories...

I use the same routine for my eightand ten-year-olds, too, except we do games and 21 Questions and thankYou-Hashem and best-thing-that-happened-today instead of storytime (and sometimes storytime too). And then they have to make a face when Mommy gives them a kiss. That’s part of the routine too. And you know what the greatest benefit is? You’re going to start loving bedtime. Because, hey, it’s a predictable routine for you, too! You know when it starts, what it entails, and when it’s going to end. Bedtime is no longer an endless exercise in futility and mommy-guilt. It’s your most precious, calm time with the kids, when you actually get to look at them and listen to them and enjoy just being a mommy for a few minutes. (Some of you are nodding reading this. The others are thinking that this sounds like something someone would write when they know that thousands of people are going to read her thoughts on the pages of a magazine. But, yes, believe me, it really is this life-changing.)

THE “BUT”: You will become “that”

way.) If your kids are in the right age bracket, this may work.

2. CHILL IT! If you’re the sort, you don’t need me to elaborate (and it’s also a bit dangerous for the faint of heart among the rest of us). You’re likely already raising an eyebrow at this article. The kids aren’t used to the new schedule? Give it a few days, it’ll happen. In the worst

case they’ll be a bit tired. It’s all good.

3. GRADUAL DOES IT. You might still prefer to have your yamim tovim schedule more relaxed and summer bedtime later — but it doesn’t have to be all of it. Start thinking of whatever new change you want to implement two weeks in advance, and slowly nudge your way forward just a bit more every night.

A FEW GENERAL TIPS: A. PREPARE THE KIDS. Bedtime is part of the day. It’s not a capricious spur-of-the-moment decision because Mommy needs her quiet. Remind your kids early on that “today we are going to sleep early,” so that at 7 p.m., the news doesn’t come as a shock. Give ten-minute reminders before each subsequent step.

B. PUT THE HOUSE INTO SLEEP MODE. Shut the lights. Lock the teenagers into their rooms with a strict nophones-now policy. (Always a nice idea, anyway.)

sister-in-law. The one who everyone rolls eyes at when she can’t join the family shalosh seudos because “Chaim needs to sleep at six.”

C. PHYSICALLY HELP THEM.

READY FOR THE CLOCK CHANGE?

D. SHOW THEM IT’S WORTH IT.

Watching the kids still tearing around the house when it’s completely dark outside and knowing you’ll have to get them used to a new bedtime now that the clock has changed can seem agonizingly impossible. Try viewing it technically instead. It’s going to happen; you just need to decide on the approach most suited to your personality:

1. DON’T LET IT HAPPEN! When the kids were younger, I never understood mothers’ complaints about “getting kids back on schedule.” I never let them off it to begin with! Come whatever the seasonal change was, I was one gloating mom. (For about eight years, any-

Take the kids’ hands and lead them toward the bath. For the first few times, at least, do the routines with them. For very visual kids, a picture chart of their bedtime routine can be helpful.

When they wake up in the morning, comment on how refreshed they are going to be today and how good it feels when we’ve had enough sleep. Do not say this on a cranky day to “prove” how miserable it is to have inadequate sleep (I admit I always fall for this). We are all more motivated from feel-good connections than from pointing out our less-picturesque moments. And say this to yourself, too. Half our bad mommy moments are rooted in the guilt we feel for shooing our kids into bed in the middle of their game. Remember that you are not doing this for yourself — it’s good for them. If you are confident that you are giving them a gift, you will project that confidence.

THE “BUT”: We get excited when something works. But we also need to remember that our kids do grow up, as I discovered when my son pointed out (for the 54th time, but it was the first time I listened) that he was still going to sleep at 7 p.m., and, well, at nine years old his bedtime was allowed to change.

“MOMMY, I CAN’T SLEEP!”

Some children have a much harder time falling asleep than others. Contrary to what our guilty conscience tells us, it usually has nothing to do with us doing something “wrong” early on. Some kids simply have a harder time winding down. To help them, first try to assess what’s going on. The solution will be very different if your child is not falling asleep because he’s afraid of the dark than if the room temperature is making him uncomfortable. (Another thing to consider: Is this bothering them, or only you?) • For most children (not all!), quick visits on your part will make winding down less frightening. • This may seem obvious, but make sure the lights are off and the noise level in the house is low. And FOMO is a big issue for younger kids in our typically large families. • Do not allow your child to look at any screen — yes, even our kosher phones! — for at least an hour before going to bed. • Avoid giving large meals close to bedtime. • Make sure the play closer to bedtime is of the quieter variety (because your kids generally consult with you first, I know). • Children with special needs or long-term illnesses typi-

90 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 28, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

cally find it more difficult to fall asleep or sleep through the night. A doctor or sleep expert can offer some valuable advice, or medication if necessary. • Sleep disorders do exist!

Sometimes none of the standard things work. As the mother, you will intuit if your child is having a harder time than would seem “normal.” Sometimes difficulty falling asleep is the result of the child struggling to process a significant event. Trust your intuition. And remember: Your child does not need to have significant “issues” for you to consult with a sleep specialist.

TO SLEEP OR NOT TO SLEEP, THAT IS THE QUESTION. There is so much debate out there regarding assistive devices such as white noise machines, melatonin and other sleep assists. Are they helpful? Sure. No one claims they aren’t. For some families, they’re game-changing. At the same time, they often create dependency (and many times are tried before softer methods), so the conclusion isn’t at all clear-cut. Like any other decision, it is extremely personal and depends on so many factors. Personally, I’ve never used any of these methods. But your home is different from mine. Nobody can tell anyone else what to do. The thing is, that applies to us, too. Sometimes we “tell” ourselves the “right” thing to do… except that it doesn’t work. As obvious as this may seem, we do sometimes need to remind ourselves: Do something only if it works. Every child is different. Every parent is different. Ergo, our parenting styles and rules will vary from household to household — and within the same household, from child to child. We don’t really need a manual (or this article). And with this pompous statement explaining to you why you just spent twenty minutes reading an article you might not really need, I shall conclude. Riki Schreiber, Eretz Yisroel, 2:30 a.m.

Joel (Yoilish) Felsen

The world of Yiddish-language media has undergone a significant shift over the last fifteen years. Political analyses were once only found in the handful of Yiddish weekly newspapers, and the information was often superficial in nature. With the success of the Kol Mevaser hotline and online platforms, the deluge of daily news pamphlets handed out in shuls, and the rise of information available at large, a savvy world of Yiddish political analyses has emerged — with an avid fan base of listeners to match it. Yoilish Felsen, a chassidish yungerman who grew up in Williamsburg, has been one of the stars of this genre, but his impact on the Yiddish-speaking world goes far beyond this niche expertise. In addition to his work as one of the the leading fundraisers at the renowned RCCS chesed organization, Felsen’s broadcasts on Kol Mevaser — his informative talks, his business and self-improvement advice, and his Ziben Menit Mit Yoilish (Seven Minutes With Yoilish) daily recording — have become extremely popular with listeners of all ages. With the 2020 election fast approaching, we caught up with Mr. Felsen to hear his story and get some unique insight into what to expect come November 3.

RCCS Fundraiser, Public Speaker, Kol Mevaser Commentator and Interviewer

How did you become one of the popular voices in Yiddish media?

This Week:

Growing up, I was always a curious observer and an avid reader. After my marriage, I enjoyed writing recreationally, but I was a salesman by trade. In the mid-2000s, I did sales work for the then-fledgling Kol Mevaser, but with the hotline’s great success, there was soon no need for my work, as advertisers proactively reached out to place ads. Eventually, one of the prominent commentators asked me to join him in conversations covering a variety of topics, and from there things kept on growing until I started recording my own broadcasts.

98 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 28, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

We are excited to present the second installment of our new weekly column in which we give readers a glimpse into the lives of notable members of the community. You know about them; now get to know them.

Did you originally cover politics or general issues?

It was a mix at first. Over time, I turned into the unofficial left-leaning voice on the hotline. It wasn’t by design, but because most people in the community lean right, my political views as a Yid who relates to the plight of minorities, refugees and the poor stood out. For a few years I carried this mantle, but I eventually noticed that the majority of people don’t appreciate hearing the other side of things, and I was just inviting negative feedback. I have since transitioned to featuring more general analyses and informative content instead of polarizing political opinions. What recordings do you currently have on Kol Mevaser?

My most popular content is the daily seven-minute recording titled Ziben Menit Mit Yoilish. It generally runs a little longer than seven minutes, but if I’d give it the more accurate name of “ten minutes with Yoilish,” it would inevitably run fifteen minutes long… I use this platform to share history, news, general knowledge, observations and the like. I’ve, baruch Hashem, been getting very positive feedback, and it’s very humbling to know that thousands of people make my musings a part of their daily routine. Another feature I am a part of is the “Experience and Success” section on Kol Mevaser. These broadcasts feature interviews with leading businessmen and influential individuals who share with listeners the steps they can take toward success. I’ve personally learned a lot from these interviews as well. I also partake in a weekly parent-

ing and chinuch conversation on Kol Mevaser with R’ Sholom Yaakov Wosner, a respected mechanech who offers tips and advice. There are additional features in the works that I am excited to roll out to the public in the near future. What can you tell us about your speaking engagements off the hotline?

Over time, I developed a passion for helping motivate people and guiding them toward self-improvement and responsible decision-making. I realized that there is an eagerness for such information in the community, and I committed myself to being part of the solution. My work has been very well received, and today people call me to speak to yeshivah boys or at business conferences, and I’ve also been invited to be chairman at melaveh malkahs and other events. I recently chaired a large business expo, and I got great feedback from people who were pleased to hear from a heimish person who can relate to their unique experiences. What kind of results do you see from these lectures?

Many struggling people fall into a state of yi’ush (despair), and the right motivation often goes a long way.

There was a yungerman who told me that he knew he needed to get rid of his smartphone, which was distracting him from succeeding in life, but he kept pushing it off. He heard one of my talks where I mentioned that once you make up your mind to do something, no matter the reason, don’t go back and relitigate the decision when it’s time to act on it. That same day he traded in his phone, and his life has been much better for it. You often mention your work for RCCS. What is your position there?

I am a fundraiser for the organization. For those who are unfamiliar, RCCS has an annual budget of over $13 million! The team helps cancer patients and their families with insurance premiums, referrals, medical assistance and anything else they might need. As someone who does interviews, I spent my early days at the organization speaking to people and getting firsthand accounts of how they help families in crisis. I was very moved by what I heard, and I am still constantly blown away by the incredible chesed efforts of the RCCS team. I cannot think of a greater job in the world than what I do there. You are a man who wears many hats. Which job title do you most identify with?

People in the community might associate me with my commentary work, but I do think of my position at RCCS as my primary identity. I want to be known and remembered for this work that truly makes a positive impact every day on people who are so vulnerable and lost. I know that in our current environment, many have lost track of

this, but politics is mostly supposed to be a distraction. Helping Yidden in need is deeply personal and meaningful!

people were overly confident that Clinton could rely on a “blue wall” in those crucial areas. So I’d say that the best lesson is not to fall prey to recency bias and assume that the errors will play out the same way. Biden can just as well outperform his already strong polling numbers. I should also note that in the 2018 midterm elections, Democrats largely met or exceeded their polling margins.

* * * * * By the time people read this interview, it’ll be only days before the election. Can you share with us your view on the race?

Actually, the election is already well underway... Tens of millions of early ballots — both mail-in and in-person — have already been cast, and it is estimated that by November 3 we will be well over 50% of the total 2016 vote! But to answer your question, it’s important to zoom out and see the race for what it is: Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden has been leading President Trump in the polls by a consistent 6% to 10% for a year now. Trump is a clear underdog, and it’ll probably take a polling error and a late shift toward Trump among undecideds, third-party voters and leaners for him to win. Wasn’t this the case in 2016 as well? He’s already pulled it off once.

It is understandable for people to feel this way, but there are a few notable differences that I’ll point out. First, in 2016 the polls — even those that showed Clinton well ahead in the race — indicated that there were many undecided voters left. When these voters went overwhelmingly to Trump, it put him over the top by small margins in the three crucial states of Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania. This time around, Biden is polling over 50% in many states, and there are fewer undecideds left. Second, Clinton wasn’t well liked — unlike Biden — and there were a number of times

throughout the race where Trump was actually ahead of her in the polls. That hasn’t been the case this time, which makes it more likely that the polling lead will hold. I should add that the Comey letter about the reopening of the Clinton email investigation just eleven days before the election played a big role in her loss. On one hand, it appears unlikely that it will happen again, but it does go to show that you can never be too certain in advance. So do you think Trump has almost no chance?

No, I wouldn’t go so far as to say that. The expert campaign modelers give him about a 10% chance, which sounds about right. For a comparison, the most popular model, from Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight, had Trump at about 30% late in the 2016 race and has him at 12% today. That’s very different from having no chance, though. What can be learned from the 2016 polling error?

That’s a very good question. People have a tendency to remember what happened last and put too much focus on it. Those who remember the 2012 election will recall that President Obama actually exceeded his polling numbers in 2012, especially in the Midwest. This was part of the reason

100 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 28, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

But isn’t it possible that there’s something unique about Trump that makes him more likely to overperform his polling numbers?

There is one clear advantage he had in the past election, one that has been addressed this time around: Trump did very well with uneducated white voters in 2016, and these people generally don’t answer polls at the same rate as their educated peers. The highquality pollsters now weigh their polls by adjusting for education the same way they do for race, age and other factors. That being said, there might always be a different error in his favor. How about the idea that some Trump voters will not admit to pollsters that they’re voting for a president who, in the media, is considered toxic?

This phenomenon is referred to as “shy Trump voters” and it makes some sense on the surface, but there are a number of reasons not to buy it. Some polls, when aiming to make sure that they get a representative sample, will ask people whom they voted for last time. This means that people are already admitting to having voted for Trump and are then asked for their choice. It is also possible to compare online and live caller polls to see if people give a different answer when they’re not speaking to a person. Studies have shown that there isn’t much of a difference. Further, even in 2016,

there wasn’t a polling error toward Trump in solidly blue states where this effect should have theoretically been most pronounced. In sum, this phenomenon appears to be without evidence. Some Trump supporters will argue that the president has surely won over some doubters with how the U.S. was doing pre-COVID, as well as other promises he kept. Together with his existing base, shouldn’t that put him over the top?

If this were a traditional presidency, I would agree. Most incumbents overseeing a good economy are clear favorites. And Trump also deserves credit for being a fresh perspective that has enabled peace deals and provided a much-needed shake-up in the international arena. But the reason he isn’t getting the traditional boost is because instead of running a campaign and appealing to the people in the middle, he has doubled down on exciting his own base and ignored what’s actually popular. To give just one example: Obamacare has a high approval rating today, yet his administration is currently before the Supreme Court trying to get it nullified on a technicality. That’s not a winning recipe. How will early voting impact the election?

The Democrats have put a tremendous focus on early voting, and so far it seems to be paying major dividends. The Republicans will probably dominate Election Day voting. While it’s generally much better to have a sure vote in the bag early, there are always some mail ballots rejected and it’s possible that the GOP will be able to nullify a number of mail-in ballots on legal technicalities. We’ll have to see how it plays out. What advice do you have for the frum community before this election?

One word: VOTE! It doesn’t matter who you vote for in a blue state like New York, but it does matter that you make your voice heard. Another thing I want to note: I know most readers are strongly pro-Trump and would be very disappointed if, in fact, Biden does manage to win. But I want them to know that America is a very large, bureaucratic country, and things don’t change so easily under a new president. Many conservatives threatened to leave if Obama won, and many liberals did the same in 2016. They all stayed — and the face of America didn’t change much. If someone knew nothing about politics, he could go his entire life without knowing that the parties in power have shifted back and forth. Under Biden, very little in our day-to-day lives would change.

Hyperactivity, lack of inhibition, poor impulse control: Do these behaviors bear any association or relevance to adult life? Presumably not. Adults are individuals who don’t step out of the clearly delineated boundaries of conformity. They are always on their best behavior, they follow through, they keep all of their personal emotions guarded under lock and key, and their round-the-clock mannerisms can be ticked off on a checklist of perfection and emotional regulation. Perfectly aligned and precisely executed — isn’t that adult life? Yes, there’s a hyperactive child. Gets explosive when triggered. Throws and yells and does dangerous stuff, and has tantrums reaching a level of abnormal volume and intensity. But after all, he’s a child, right? The H in ADHD stands for hyperactivity. Adults can be hyperactive too (although their reactions and actions are different from a child’s hyperactive behavior). To that end, adults (and children) who are “gifted” with the H 104 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / October 28, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

factor can explode, lack the skills to use forethought and restraint, and their interpersonal relationships will definitely suffer. But when the hyperactivity is channeled correctly, it can be an asset to daily living and success. With this in mind, let’s reassess and redefine the term ADHD. Let’s define it as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Difference (not Disorder). ADHD, when treated and addressed appropriately, is just a difference. The ADHDer has to learn how to live and thrive with his differences so that he can accomplish, or even surpass, his peers.

USHI’S STORY: Picture the following scenario: In an effort to speed the wait process at an upscale affair, a waiter devises an ingenious plan. He’ll hold twelve plates at once and serve the guests in an extremely efficient manner. So he stacks the plates and sets out to execute his brainstorm. The result? Shattered glass and china, steaks and side dishes falling onto exclusive table linen and the ballroom floor, soiling and staining the guests’ finery

with the mess. Well, that was my life. I also had the illusion that I could hold twelve different plates at once. I could be a serial entrepreneur, hold key positions on several boards, and be the go-to mover and shaker for anything and everything. And the truth was, I did possess a high-level voltage of energy and creativity, and my capabilities were definitely impressive. So why was it, I often wondered, that there were constantly signals that things were heading in the wrong direction? Why was it that so many details in my personal, communal and business life were frequently going haywire? I remembered the time that I gathered all my married siblings, on a whim, and announced that we were going to surprise my parents with a mini-vacation for their anniversary. We were going to travel by plane, stay at a posh hotel, and spend a weekend there together to celebrate this special occasion. This vacation would be all-expenses paid,

thanks to me, the generous brother/son. I couldn’t understand why their reaction was lukewarm, even bordering on anger. Here are some of the responses I got: “But, Ushi, the anniversary’s tonight, and it’s Thursday afternoon! How can we make it there in time for Shabbos?” my sister protested, practically hysterical. “What about a program?” my levelheaded younger brother asked in his gratingly eventempered voice. “Don’t you know arrangements for kids have to be made at least three days in advance?” My oldest sister was highly annoyed. I heard them all out and couldn’t understand why they were so ungrateful. But I had to admit that their concerns were relevant and rational. I really hadn’t planned a program, nor taken any of the logistics into account. My emotions were also sorely lacking an internal thermostat. I could become excited, angry or heated in an instant, and my reactions would mirror my feelings. I had a heart of gold, but would often overreact. When overwhelmed with feelings of compassion, I sometimes donned a life vest and tried to “save” people from drowning in the waves of tragedy or debt. I couldn’t understand why my efforts were sometimes rebuffed or even made matters worse (though there were times when I did prove to be a lifesaver). In retrospect, I realize that I do have the ability to save lives, but

all pertinent paperwork for this transaction, and he grimaced. “Did you research this matter? Did you look into projected profit and loss? Do you know what the assets are versus the outstanding debt? Did you do your due diligence or at least contact a financial analyst?” he queried. I could not understand him. Did he lack basic comprehension? This was “the deal of the century!" “I am going to research this properly,” he said finally. And that is when I lost it. “We need to close on this NOW!” I yelled. “If you refuse, you’re fired.” More angry words followed, and to make a long story short, my secretary packed up his belongings and bid my firm goodbye. I didn’t bat an eyelash. My lack of control and inhibition didn’t allow me to be rational. “Good for him,” I thought. “So be it. I’ll eat this money pie and relish all the deliciousness of this sweet deal by myself, without leaving him even one single crumb or meager slice of money or pleasure.” Right then and there, I was prepared to wire the money to my business associate. But because I have little patience for small print and pertinent details and am not the type to cross all the t’s and dot all the i’s, the transaction failed. My faithful secretary left my firm, and although I recruited several new workers in his stead, they couldn’t

I could be a serial entrepreneur, hold key positions on several boards, and be the go-to mover and shaker for anything and everything. all the details have to be discussed with professionals beforehand, and executed in a manner that is sensitive, thoughtout and purposeful. * * * * *

Then came the day when everything changed. A business associate called me up with a “once-in-a-lifetime” offer. He wanted me to partner with him and become a shareholder in a failing pharmaceutical chain. “We’ll rebrand and get this business back on track. I’m telling you, this is an offer that you can’t refuse.” I got very excited and was ready to sign the dotted line immediately. My (former) devoted secretary was my right-hand man. I asked him to prepare

Think of a machine lacking a button or other mechanism to shut it off. Think of a vehicle that cannot be stopped. Now think of a brain that lacks impulse control. The ADHDer responds differently to stimulus than the average human being does. The trajectory of a typical individual when experiencing stimulus is as follows: STIMULUS (something happened) -----> STOP (thinks, contemplates, self-monitors, reflects and asks himself: How should I react? What is the best thing to do in this situation?) -----> RESPONSE. In contrast, the hyperactive individual follows a different pathway: STIMULUS, and immediately -----> RESPONSE. The good news is that a large percentage of activists and inventors were ADHDers. Often, all that is left for the hyperactive adult is to embrace his difference, incorporate a plan, and soar!

One day, my wise uncle came to visit me in my office. Over coffee, I found myself confiding my frustrations and failure to him. “Ushi,” he said contemplatively, “will you be angry at me if I tell you the truth to your face?” With my agreement, he put all the cards on the table. He told me that he believed I was super-gifted, but that I did have an issue that, time and again, was proving to be my biggest asset — and at the same time, my biggest liability. “You have boundless energy, which makes you second to none,” my uncle noted. “But on the other hand, you have a lack of inhibition. Let’s call your issue a lever, off-switch or traffic sign. Your brain does not tell you when to stop and redirect.” I mulled over his words, and examined my personality in the mirror of truth. “Ushi, it’s time,” he said. “Coaching was created for successful people like you. I have a successful business and always strive to bring it to the next level; that’s why I have a business coach. Make an appointment with an ADHD coach, and your great life will become even greater.”

Coaching has taught me how to harness my incredible abilities. It has helped me take a step back, taught me how to deep-breathe, and gives me the tools to reevaluate and reroute my life, every step of the way. Even more so, I now believe that often a step back is a step forward. Does it hinder me from accomplishing great things? Not in the least. Now I can undertake projects, spearhead life-saving initiatives, be the loving and considerate family man of my dreams, and accomplish the impossible in my business dealings — all because of my clarity of thought and emotional equilibrium. I get the best of both worlds: boundless energy and creativity, and the unique gift of being thought-out and responsible. And whenever I feel that my brain needs a tune-up, I can always call my coach and get my life back on track. Most people can easily conjure up an image visually. Just mention the beach, and they can see it all in their mind: the sand glistening in the sunlight, the waves softly crashing onto the shore, the sea gulls lapping about…. But some people can’t. Their mind’s eye is blind. They close their eyes and are met with a black space of nothingness.

WHILE APHANTASIACS CAN CONCEPTUALIZE AN IMAGE IN THEIR MIND, AND EVEN DESCRIBE IT IN DETAIL, THEY CANNOT ACTUALLY SEE IT. Are you from the minority that has aphantasia? Let’s see... Close your eyes and visualize a red star. Now look at the bottom right corner of the page. What picture appeared in your mind? Is #1 all you saw? Is your mind blank? If yes, welcome to the world of aphantasia. If you’re still not sure, close your eyes and visualize an apple. If you see anything, even vague outlines or darkened images, you do not have aphantasia. Only a dark black “void” signifies the condition.

Aphantasia was already stumbled upon many years ago by English scientist Francis Galton, who in a report titled Statistics of Mental Imagery invited people to visualize a breakfast table full of food. “To my astonishment,” he writes, “I found that the great majority of the

men of science to whom I first applied protested that mental imagery was unknown to them, and they looked

imagery’ really expressed what I believed everybody supposed them to mean. They had no more notion of its true nature than a colour-blind man who has not discerned his defect has of the nature of colour.” (Galton, 1880) When he spoke to members of the “general society,” he was suddenly regaled with visually rich imagery coloring the minds of his subjects.

By: Shevy Hollander

The concept remained largely unexplored for the next 130 years. And then, in the early 2000s, a patient of neurologist Adam Zeman of England, who under the cloak of anonymity was only referred to as MX, had a curious experience post-op. Suddenly, he found, he could not visualize his family members in his mind, could not be transported to a visual utopia while reading fiction books, and his dreams were black — imageless. The case was a fascinating phenomenon, but even more powerful was the reaction to this study, which was released in 2010. Because while MX actually regained his ability to visualize,

After reading about MX’s peculiar case, many people — among them Blake Ross, cofounder of Firefox — were amused that the patient felt he’d lost a run-of-the-mill ability. Wasn’t it a supernatural ability he’d had to begin with? They found it ludicrous to think that people actually saw pictures in their mind, that the word visualize actually meant that in the literal sense. Ross said reading about this ability was akin to reading about a scientist finding a man without a tail! And many others echoed his sentiments. It didn’t take long for individuals across the world to take notice and realize that they have this newfound condition. Until this point they’d been happily oblivious to the fact that they were missing out on a rich experience available to most of humanity.

his case sparked the interest of many aphantasiacs, who had never before known what they had been missing out on...

THIS EXPANDED ZEMAN’S STUDY FROM ONE PATIENT, MX, TO PEOPLE FROM ACROSS THE GLOBE, RESULTING IN THE LAUNCHING OF THE MIND’S EYE, A 2015 RESEARCH PROJECT THAT STUDIED THE NEWLY COINED CONDITION, CONGENITAL APHANTASIA — OR AS IT SIMPLY BECAME KNOWN AS, APHANTASIA.

OUT OF THE 21 SELF-DIAGNOSED APHANTASIACS PARTICIPATING IN THE STUDY, 17 REPORTED VISUAL DREAMS BUT THE INABILITY TO VOLUNTARILY BRING UP IMAGES IN THEIR MIND.

Are you aphantasiac and starting to feel selfconscious? Take heart. It’s neither a disorder nor a disability, according to Zeman, who calls it “an intriguing variation in human experience.”

While the lack of ability to visualize a loved one who has gone to a better place, and even someone temporarily away, can be distressing, the condition has its upsides too. After all, aphantasia also leads to less likelihood of being troubled with flashbacks of disturbing scenes.

While research on the condition is ongoing, the understanding of aphantasia is limited. After all, the only evidence available is subjective views from within a person’s mind. And so, many questions remain. Do we really know how prevalent the condition is? Is it hereditary? Are there certain conditions, like depression or trauma, that cause acquired aphantasia (as opposed to congenital aphantasia) later in life? Maybe one day we will know more.

While you’d think that the creativity of someone without any visualization abilities would be lacking, curiously, what Galton had already discovered back in 1880 seems to be true, as many painters and famous artists have this condition. In his original observation, Galton discovered that people “who declare themselves entirely deficient in the power of seeing mental pictures could nevertheless give life-like descriptions of what they have seen and can otherwise express themselves as if they were gifted with a vivid visual imagination. They can also become painters of the rank of Royal Academicians.”

Wow!

Gorgeous!

This is just out of this world! Stunning!

I must get in there! I must see what’s inside!

I’ll tell you what’s there: Grand chandeliers dangle from the ceiling, silk curtains are draped across the windows…

Plush carpets line the floors…

The doors open and close noiselessly…

I want to see it for myself.

But I won’t eat anything there! I won’t drink! I just want to glide over those carpets…

Forget about it. It costs money to get inside.

And he?

No chance.

118 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

He can get in? Why him and not me?

Why? Ha, ha, ha…

Because he’s a wealthy merchant. He dines here every day!

Oh, he’s going in.

And you — you’re just a villager who grows some vegetables to feed your children…

I must see it from up close…

Oy, I didn’t see anything. I’m staying here. Soon the man will leave, and he’ll tell me what it looks like inside.

Hey, you! What are you doing here?

Wealthy? For now. If he keeps dining in our luxury inn every day…

I’m waiting for that wealthy man who went inside.

He’ll soon be poor!

What does this tell us?

“Don’t fear, Avram… Your reward is great indeed” (15:1). We do many mitzvos and amass a wealth of zechusim. But if a person places himself in a dangerous situation and is saved by a miracle, he uses up the zechusim saved for him for Olam Haba. Avraham Avinu worried about this. He said: “I was in the kivshan ha’esh; I warred with kings; I put myself into places of danger — perhaps I already wasted all of my reward in this world?” Hashem answered him: “Don’t fear, Avram. I’ve done these miracles for you for ‘free.’ Your reward in Olam Haba will be very great!” (Source: Dubno Maggid)
