THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS (Re: Students at the Stove, Issue 61) I’d like to bring awareness to readers in regard to the cooking contest. Women may not realize that in the process of teaching our daughters how to cook, we also need to teach them the relevant halachos, such as how to check onions, beans, etc. Thank you so much for the contest. We’re really enjoying it. Goldie S.
CLARIFYING THE COOKING CONTEST (Re: Students at the Stove, Issue 61) We have three girls in the house willing to help out with Shabbos food. Do they each have to prepare the foods you assign? Also, if we won’t be home one of the weeks in which the program runs, is it still possible for us to join the program? Gebentcht With Girls SHIFRA FIDDLE RESPONDS: You may prepare any other Shabbos food, as long as each participant cooks six Shabbos dishes over the course of the program. As for your second question, if a participant misses a week, she can make up for it by cooking two dishes another week. The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. Please email comments@thebpview.com.

WRAP IT HEALTHILY (Re: Students at the Stove, Issue 61) The cover page to your cooking contest shows a picture of a foilwrapped roll cooking in the cholent pot. Aluminum foil, in general, is not the healthiest thing to use with food, but to have it cooking all Shabbos and emitting unhealthy particles into the cholent is really not a good idea. Kol tuv, G.K.

(Inbox, Issue 61) This is in response to the mother who wrote in about the non-eidel stickers that make their way into her daughter’s sticker collection. You are right about this problem. Perhaps this idea might help: Whenever my daughter brings home a sticker that is not appropriate, I have an entire container of permanent markers of all colors prepared just for this purpose. We color the sticker to transform it into a tznius’dig version, and everyone is happy. Of course, if something is entirely inappropriate, we discuss it with our daughter and get rid of it. too close to suppertime is to cut the chicken into really small pieces (kitchen shears are great for this) and cook or saute it with your favorite seasonings and add-ons. It’s an excellent method for last-minute preparation, since small pieces defrost instantly and need minimal cooking time. Quick Cook
SUPPERS TO THE RESCUE (Re: Food Section) This is a long overdue thank you for your simple and delicious recipes, especially the most recent features on one-pan meals and chicken cutlet dinners. The honey-mustard salmon supper recipe (Issue 56) was so good and so simple, and it got rave reviews from my husband! (That’s a real compliment, coming from a picky, onlylikes-this-or-that eater.) I’m trying out one new chicken cutlet recipe per week, and so far, they have all been winner dinners! The best part is that most of the recipes you include call for basic pantry staples that I always have at home. I also want to thank you for your exciting and original contests, both for adults and kids of all ages. I was really hoping to participate in the early bedtime contest, but unfortunately, it was impossible for me to make it to bed by 10:45. (I did try, though! My sister even placed reminder calls that first week to encourage me...) Keep up the fantastic work! With appreciation, The Vogel Family

Many of us may not realize how important clear and visible house numbers are. Whether it’s day or night, dark or light, addresses must be readable. Many of us may think that as long as there is a number beside the door, it’s sufficient, but after a recent experience in which I arrived at a home on a wrong block, I decided to write in. I could not help but think that if this were a Hatzolah call, chas v’shalom, it could have prevented a life from being saved. Therefore I am using this forum to remind everyone how crucial it is to make sure that their house numbers are clear and visible at all times. A Boro Park Resident

WEEK 11:
AHAVAS HASHEM Sitting beside his father, Yanky points along as he carefully mouths each word of the tefillos he is saying. Many, if not most, of the boys in his third grade class have difficulty being in shul for any stretch of time, and inevitably end up spending time in the hallway with friends or else only arriving in shul much later, as the davening draws to a close. Not Yanky. Though it is certainly difficult for him, as well, he is determined to be an “adult” mispallel, remaining in his seat, focused on uttering each word with devotion. Yanky’s father looks on with pride, watching his son say the words of Shema and following along attentively during Krias HaTorah. An immense feeling of pride wells up inside him. Affectionately, he leans over and gives Yanky a kiss on his forehead….
While every father wishes for his son to grow and succeed, and would rightfully feel quite proud of such a son, the kiss is nonetheless misplaced. To quote the Rema,[1] “V’assur l’adam l’nashek banav haketanim b’veis haknesses l’haros she’ein ahavah k’ahavas haMakom, Baruch Hu — It is forbidden for a person to kiss his young children in shul, to firmly implant the message that there is no love comparable to the love of Hakadosh Baruch Hu.” Nothing compares to the level of love Hashem has for us, and conversely, if we truly appreciated Him and what He does for us, our love for Him would transcend any love we could possibly have for another human being. So, you say to yourself, what’s the big deal? Just because I’m supposed to love Hashem I can’t show my kid how much I love him, too? Let’s try to put this into perspective. Picture a wedding scene. It’s at the chuppah, right at the climax. The chasan is put-
ting the ring onto the kallah’s finger as he utters the fateful words that will forever change their lives. Suddenly, there’s a commotion as one of the photographers puts down his camera, rushes over to the chasan, and embraces him in a bear hug. “Moshe Baruch, it’s you! I almost didn’t recognize you! Don’t you remember me? It’s Gavriel, your roommate from back when we were together in mesivta! Remember those awesome bein hazmanim trips? Goodness, it’s been ages; we really need to catch up...” Meeting up with a longlost best friend can be quite emotional — but this is clearly the wrong time and place for such an expression. Hakadosh Baruch Hu loves each and every one of us tremendously, beyond anything we can imagine. We as well, are charged with a mitzvah of ahavas Hashem, developing a genuine heartfelt love toward Him that rises above all of our personal matters and concerns and drives us to come near to Him. Right now, I’m talking to Him and He’s right there, focused and listening to me. It’s a moment to reflect on the unparalleled love He has for me and for myself to feel a love for Him. At this moment, I have nobody else in the world. It’s not a time for me to show affection to others. So go ahead and tell your son how proud you were to watch him daven — but hold off on the display of affection until after you leave the shul. A practical application: There are various customs regarding conducting a chuppah ceremony in a beis knesses. Unfortunately, it is common that after the chuppah, relatives and well-wishers will impulsively bestow a kiss along with mazel tov wishes. While conducting the chuppah may be al-
lowed, the show of affection certainly is not. Observing the various communities around the globe, however, it is readily apparent that different kehillos maintain different approaches in this regard. Among Ashkenazim, this halacha is observed quite literally, with only a rare example of a kiss within the beis knesses, usually by someone unaware of this halacha. However, among Sefardim and those of Eidot Hamizrach, be it of Syrian, Egyptian, Moroccan or other descent, there is a clear tolerance in many situations. It is standard to kiss the hand of the rav or chacham. When returning to one’s seat after an aliyah, many kiss the hand of their father. Why is this so? First and foremost, the halacha is codified by the Rema, but finds no mention at all in the words of the Shulchan Aruch. This sets the stage for the disparity between various kehillos. That said, even Sefardim generally accept the concept of this halacha and frown upon random kissing of children, parents and so on. Those who allow it limit it to a specific range of instances, whereby the act can be described as one of kavod haTorah — respect for the Torah: those who read it, and those who are masters of it.[2] Their understanding is that only acts of affection are proscribed, but kissing the hand of the chacham is akin to kissing a sefer Torah — something very much a part of our ahavas Hashem, not an independent and unrelated emotion.[3] I will now digress briefly, with the understanding that this can be something about which many people have passionate opinions. It is important, though, to at least provide a proper framework for any discussion.
IN SUMMATION: 1. One may not kiss a child, or any other person, within a beis knesses. 2. Certain kehillos have historically had some degree of allowance; even among those kehillos, however, the tolerance is limited to a kiss as a display of kavod haTorah, not of affection.

Every parent is proud to have their child sit beside them in shul. Most children, however, find it difficult to sit for protracted periods of time, particularly when they do not yet have a command of the language necessary for appreciating tefillah. To bring them or not to bring them? At what age? At what cost? What if the only option is to bring a child for the full davening, whereby he’ll sit through Shema and maybe an aliyah or two, but otherwise be playing games in the hallway? The Mishnah Berurah provides two extremely pertinent points,[4] with some elaboration: • Disturbing the concentration of even a single mispallel is quite problematic. Preventing a person from doing a mitzvah is always a serious matter, and preventing a person from being mispallel properly no less.[5] • We place tremendous value on education. As we have done for generations, bringing our children to shul from a young age can be both a fulfillment of our chinuch obligation, as well as a way to instill an appreciation for kedusha and yiras Shamayim from a young age. We must, however, remain focused on our goal. Our job is not to be a Shabbos morning babysitter; our job is to educate. There are many ideas and opinions of how to best achieve this, but the objective must be at the forefront of our decisions. Is the experience I am molding one that will bring my son, over the long run, to a better appreciation of tefillah and what a beis knesses is all about? As the Mishnah Berurah emphasizes repeatedly, we are dealing with a real risk of “hergel naaseh teva,” repeated actions becoming nature. After years of talking in the back, playing games to alleviate boredom, and running in and out without being taught how to act with some level of reverence, it is only natural for this child to grow into an adult with no appreciation for tefillah, no reverence for a beis knesses, and no desire to challenge himself to reach higher. There are multitudes of techniques, and numerous approaches and answers, regarding putting our chinuch into action. Every child and every setting is unique. It is critical, however, to remain true to the mission of chinuch with which we are charged.

Shas Yiden - a Bracha Amidst a Pandemic - 853,965 blatt
By Rabbi Eliezer Sandler Last week, sixty-three incredible young talmidei chachomim gathered in a hall in Beit Shemesh. Their wives did not attend this year due to the current health situation, which also prevented the 12 Shas Yiden avreichim geonim in London from attending. They were all celebrating their annual Siyum Hashas, having collectively completed 853,965 blatt of Gemara, Rashi and Tosfos! Prior to the festive meal, the avreichim geonim underwent two hours of grilling questions on the entire Shas. The examiners are recognized as leading talmidei chachomim – Maran Hagaon Harav Chaim Weiss, Rav of Beitar Illit and Maran Hagaon Harav Bunim Schreiber, Rosh Yeshiva of ‘Netiv Hadaas’. Both examiners are known as geonim charifim and bekiim in Shas. Without any papers or references on the table before them, they reeled off some 150 questions that included: asking for page citations, facts, logic and for detailed information that basically required knowledge of the Talmud by heart.
Amazing Prowess
The questioners were both amazed at the prowess of each of the avreichim geonim. Questions that were ‘thrown’ at the avreichim geonim received a thunderous response from all, simultaneously. (A video of the farher is available to be viewed on the Shas Yiden website www.shasyiden. com, which has videos of past annual
farhers.) Over the 12 years since Shas Yiden’s inception, its successful growth and the mastery of Shas by the avreichim geonim has captured the attention and imagination of the gedolei Torah all over, and who have been effusive in their praise at how they have made the idea of becoming a Shas Yid achievable and popular. After personally
examining the Shas Yiden every year with searching questions, Maran Sar Hatorah, Hagaon Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, exclaimed “Zei kennen Shas” (They know Shas!) and then agreed to become the Nasi of Shas Yiden.
Meeting the Challenge and more

25 Marcheshvan 5781 (Note: The Nasi of Shas Yiden, Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a, was unable to attend the Siyum, which he does every year, and penned a note to the Shas Yiden.) In honor of the Siyum Hashas of the kollel avreichim geonim Shas Yiden under the leadership of our friend Hagaon Harav Avrohom Halevi Eisen, shlit”a. It is difficult for me to participate on this Yom Tov of these tens of talmidei chachomim, gedolei Torah; they are all outstanding in Torah. They know the entire Shas on which I have personally tested them and saw that they are knowledgeable in the entire Shas. I send my best wishes that they should acquire knowledge of the entire Torah to learn, to teach, to guard, to do and to fulfill all the words of Thy Torah in love. And may the Gaon, our friend (Rav Eisen) shlit”a, merit to open many more kollelim and to cause Torah to grow and be glorified.

Sample Questions from the Siyum Hashas Farher To Watch the Farher click on: w w w.shasyiden.com QUESTIONS: 1. When Tannaim and Amoraim are about to lecture on a particular masechta, they have opening ‘styles’. How many are there for Maseches Megilla and where are they recorded? 2. Which similar sugya is to be found in Brochos, Shabbos, Eiruvin, Pesachim and Succah? 3. What was the name of Abaye’s father? 4. Where are to be found 2 chapters in 2 masechtos of 2 different orders of the Mishna, both in the same place
in its Mishna, and they both begin on the same page number and the same side of the folio, in the same location and row number? 5. Who is the Amora who appears a few times in the Talmud, made a statement which was strongly questioned and he was shamed, and in the end it was known that he was correct? 6. Where in Shas are the sugyos that mitzvos require intent? 7. Where is the law of “Bari veshema” (“Clear and Perhaps”) to be found in Shas?
ANSWERS: 1. Fourteen – Megilla 11a, and according to Hagaos Habach and the Gra – another 2 2. Dmai ha lo chazi lei – is not suited for him, that if he wishes he can render his possesions hefker and he is rendered poor, and the dmai is now suited for him as it says in a Mishna – Brochos 47a 3. Keilil – Rashi, Zevachim 118b 4. Perek Keitzad, Yevamot 16 and Bava Kama 16
5. Rava – Gittin 29b, 77b, Bava Metzia 81b, 97a, Avoda Zara 22a; and also Rav Papa – Bava Metzia 81a 6. Brachos 13a regarding the Reading of Shma; Eiruvin 95b regarding Tefillin; Pesochim 114b regarding matza and maror; Rosh Hashanna 28b regarding shofar 7. Kesubos 12a and 16a; Bava Kama 35b and 118b; Bava Metzia 37b
to masechta. Questions ranged from how many times does such an expression or ruling appear in a particular tractate to complex reasoning from one tractate to another. Someone unfamiliar with Talmudic study would have been very hard pressed to follow the pace of questioning and the complexity. When Rav Weiss finished his testing of the avreichim geonim, he said that he very
much regretted being unable to meet with the Shas Yiden on Shabbos, for dialoging with them would be the highest and most fulfilling oneg (pleasure of) Shabbos. After concluding his searching examination of the Shas Yiden avreichim geonim, Rav Bunim Schreiber commented “I sat with them for a long time and discussed many subjects from all over Shas, and I am a witness that their mastery and incredible
knowledge is unlimited. It was an inspiring and heart-warming sight to see tens of avreichim geonim rising to the house of Hashem to become great scholars in all of Torah.” For more information and to donate to Shas Yiden, please call 718-702-1528 or write to: 1274 49th Street #562, Brooklyn, NY 11219.
Shas Yiden – the ‘Disruptive Technology’ of Torah Learning
The Pozna Rov, Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen reciting the Kaddish in memory of his father
“Shas Yiden is the ‘disruptive technology’ of the Torah world today,” exclaimed one of the most ardent monthly supporters of the Shas Yiden kollelim network in Israel and London, UK. Disruptive technology is an innovation that significantly alters the way that consumers, industries, or businesses operate, and sweeps away the systems or ‘habits’ it replaces because it has attributes that are recognizably superior, he explained. “Ever since Shas Yiden came on the Torah scene 12 years ago, its impact has been felt throughout the Torah world. The five kollelim where 75 incredible avreichim geonim and baalei middos (people of noble character) are groomed, have become an integral part of the world Torah landscape. “Every avreich completes the entire Shas five times each year (13,555 blatt), knows it b’al peh and they have regular public farhers. Thus, today such proficiency is not only acclaimed and accepted, but many across the Torah world are trying to emulate their example, boruch Hashem.
All the Shas Yiden dancing in celebrating the Siyum
“Not only are they amazing, but I have never had such fulfilment from any of my charity giving. It hasn’t cost me a dime. Whatever I donate in any particular year, is returned from my investments, and more. For me, it is a ‘disruptive tzedakah’ as well. Thank you, Shas Yiden.” Hagaon Harav Avrohom Eisen handing out gifts and envelopes with a cash gifts for the wives of the avreichim geonim

Supreme Court: New York’s Limitations on Houses of Worship Unconstitutional In a victory for religious rights, the highest court in the land has overturned New York State’s draconian restrictions on houses of worship, classifying them as a violation of religious rights guaranteed by the Constitution’s First Amendment. The Supreme Court ruling was announced just before midnight on November 25, granting requests filed by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn, Agudath Israel of Amer-
would so perfectly align with secular convenience?” wrote Gorsuch. Gorsuch observed that allowing laundromats, banks, hardware stores and liquor stores to remain open while forbidding religious institutions enforcing the same safety precautions crossed a constitutional line. “The only explanation for treating religious places differently seems to be a judgment that what happens there isn’t as ‘essential’ as what happens in secular spaces,” wrote Gorsuch. “Indeed, the Governor is remarkably frank about this: In his judgment laundry and liquor, travel and tools are all ‘essential,’ while traditional religious exercises are not. That is exactly the kind of discrimination that the First Amendment forbids.” Agudath Israel of America hailed the victory as historic, noting that it reaffirmed “the bedrock American principle that religious freedom shall not be a second-class right in the United States.”

ica, Agudath Israel of Kew Gardens Hills, Agudath Israel of Madison, Rabbi Yisroel Reisman and Stephen Saphirstein. The legal actions asked the court to lift limits enacted by Cuomo that allowed just ten congregants at prayer services within areas designated as red zones, and slightly higher numbers in New York’s orange and yellow cluster zones. An opinion written by Justice Neil Gorsuch, one of five conservative justices who sided with the religious groups, said that Governor Andrew Cuomo acted unfairly when he chose certain businesses to be classified as essential, and therefore not bound by capacity limits he imposed on other entities, such as houses of worship. “It turns out that the businesses the Governor considers essential include hardware stores, acupuncturists and liquor stores. Bicycle repair shops, certain signage companies, accountants, lawyers and insurance agents are all essential too. So at least according to the Governor, it may be unsafe to go to church, but it is always fine to pick up another bottle of wine, shop for a new bike or spend the afternoon exploring your distal points and meridians. It was music to many a weary parent’s ears as Mayor Bill de Blasio announced plans on Sunday that would have preschool kids, elementary school students, and some special needs students heading back to the classroom, albeit with rigorous COVID-19 testing policies in place. Classes will resume on December 7 for students in pre-K through fifth grade who have chosen in-person learning for the year, with remote instruction continuing for all others. Students of all grade levels who are enrolled in the city’s District 75 schools, which serve those with the most significant disabilities, will return on December 10. Middle and high schoolers will continue with remote schooling, at least for now. De Blasio said that newly opened schools will be transitioning back to full in-person instruction, a significant change from the earlier one- to three-day-a-week in-school schedule that had been in place before classes were shut down citywide on November 19. All students and staffers will be required to submit a form to allow in-school COVID-19 testing, with 20% of those in school subject to random testing each week. The latest figures for in-school testing demonstrated positivity rates of just 0.28%, significantly lower than the 3% seven-day rolling average threshold that had the mayor closing schools two
weeks ago. “Getting our kids back in school buildings is one of the single most important things we can do for their well-being,” observed Schools Chancellor Richard Carranza. “The unparalleled value of in-person learning for students has been evident in the first few months of school, and we will do everything we can to keep our schools safe and keep them open for the duration of this pandemic.” The mayor’s announcement does not appear to include special needs students who aren’t part of District 75, and came just days after Senator Simcha Felder petitioned City Hall to ensure that reopenings include all special needs students with IEPs. “Heartbreaking requests from parents of children with autism, Down syndrome and other special learning needs are flooding my office,” said Felder. “School closures pose an unprecedented challenge to everyone, but special needs students are bearing the greatest burden.”
Shop Local Movement Kicks Off Effort To Help Neighborhood Stores Recoup Lockdown Losses It was a groundbreaking meeting in Boro Park last Monday afternoon, with small business owners getting together to discuss ideas to boost sales in the wake of the extended lockdowns that have devastated the local economy. The meeting, hosted by the Boro Park Jewish Community Council in conjunction with Breadberry, Eichler’s, Toys4U and Boro Park 24, focused on the grassroots Shop Local program. This program encourages consumers to patronize neighborhood stores, which are the lifeblood of the community. Boro Park JCC CEO Avi Greenstein hailed the gathering of more than 30 business owners as historic, describing it as the first time that local businesses have come together as a group to form a dedicated entity that would fight for their collective needs. With stores having faced a second lockdown this fall after months of closure in the spring, many are fighting for their lives, reported Boro Park 24. “Nobody wants to see stores close, and nobody wants to see stores lay off workers,” said Greenstein. “These people are the foundation of our community.” Encouraging patrons to shop locally instead of just ordering online is an uphill climb, acknowledged Greenstein, and among the suggestions shared at the meeting were improving customer service and standardizing return policies at local stores. Also discussed was the importance of encouraging in-store mask-wearing and handsanitizing. Shop Local is planning a series of seminars to help business owners up their game and give them a greater ability to compete
with online stores, as well as a media campaign touting the benefits of shopping locally. The Krula Rav, Rabbi Yaakov Gold, shlit”a, addressed the gathering and credited his own success in business with his policy of hiring community members, avoiding online shopping, and working together with his competitors. The Shop Local movement also has the approval of Rav Yechezkel Roth, shlit”a, according to Community Board 12 chairman Yidel Perlstein, who quoted Rabbi Roth as saying that people can use maaser money to cover the difference between the cost of shopping locally and buying the same item online.
Will Massive City PPE Stash Prevent Second-Wave Shortages? A $900 million stockpile of personal protective equipment to protect health care and essential workers is being touted by City Hall as a surefire way to protect those on the front lines, but not everyone is convinced that the significant supply of protective gear is sufficient to prevent possible shortfalls. Mayor Bill de Blasio said that the city had purchased the large quantity of PPE, which includes 45,729,651 isolation gowns, 58,058,000 surgical masks, 9,356,480 N95 masks, 5,855,068 face shields, 30,412,300 nitrile gloves and 948,050 goggles. Gothamist reported that the items were acquired as part of a voluntary move to ensure a 90-day stockpile of protective gear, with hospitals ordered by the state to have a threemonth supply of PPE on hand by September 30. According to The City, some hospitals failed to have an adequate stash prepared by the deadline, falling short once again as a second deadline passed, a full month later. City Councilman Ben Kallos said that despite the impressive numbers, the city’s reserve still isn’t large enough, and he criticized de Blasio for being less than transparent. According to Kallos, the 9.3 million N95 masks that the city has on hand make up only a two-month supply, with 13.5
n e d l Gosures Irea Charm her with an everlasting 14K gold gift
million masks needed to cover the city for a full 90 days. With COVID-19 infection rates rising, reports have begun surfacing of mask shortages, with nurses at Staten Island University North receiving just one single-use N95 mask for their entire shift. At Manhattan’s Bellevue Hospital, nurses receive three masks per week, even though some are on shift an extra day every other weekend, forcing them to reuse the masks for their fourth day of work. A spokesperson for de Blasio said that the city is confident it will have all the PPE it needs by the end of the year. “The federal government failed the people of New York City last spring,” said Avery Cohen. “That’s why we’re taking zero chances on preparedness so our health care workers and front-line heroes have what they need to save lives.”

In a textbook example of “Do as I say, not as I do,” Governor Andrew Cuomo found himself in an awkward position after disclosing in an interview that he would be having two of his adult daughters, as well as his 89-year-old mother, as guests in Albany for Thanksgiving dinner. Having repeatedly urged New Yorkers not to travel for Thanksgiving, to keep their distance from the elderly who are at high risk for COVID-19, and to spend the holiday with people with whom they normally interact, Cuomo’s remarks raised eyebrows and drew mountains of criticism. According to The New York Times, the governor urged New Yorkers to use this Thanksgiving, a holiday often spent with loved ones who gather from near and far, as an opportunity to pay homage to health care workers, essential workers and those who lost their lives during the pandemic. “Why don’t we really honor that this Thanksgiving?” mused Cuomo. “And saying yes, we’re going to be alone physically, but we are spiritually together, celebrating in a way that is even deeper than just the proximate location of sitting next to someone.” Within hours, the governor’s holiday plans had been revised. His office backpedaled by pointing out that he had said that his plans were subject to change, and that he hadn’t really meant to say his mother Matilda and his daughters would be joining him for the holiday. “Given the current circumstances with COVID he will have to work through COVID and will not be seeing them,” said gubernatorial senior adviser Richard Azzopardi. “Don’t tell his mom — she doesn’t know yet.”

Recap: Devorah Potolsky has a nightmare about the strange Arab and his offer. Her mother is similarly unsettled about it and is determined to find out what is going on. Joe Ludmir is furious at Emmanuel for messing up his plan by hiring the Arab who said all the wrong things to the Potolskys. Feeling down and discouraged about it, Emmanuel takes off time from work and refuses to answer any calls. “After kollel? You went to the nursing home to find him?” “Yes.” Eliyahu patted the head of the child closest to him. Meir was standing there, taking a drink before returning to cheder for the afternoon. “But why?” “I think he’s our key figure here. He’s the one who sold the raffle tickets to your father, and Jalib blurted out his name to me on the phone when I tried to question him further about his delusional dream.” “He said that because you asked him about the renovation work he did at the nursing home. I know that Emmanuel was very involved then; I saw him talking to the workers and the foreman.” “That’s possible, but in any case, when I pressed Jalib to try and remember why he dreamed specifically about us, and how he was so sure that it was us, he mentioned the nursing home and Emmanuel.” “Maybe —” Elisheva froze for a second “— maybe my father is doing it all?” Eliyahu smiled. “If your father has this kind of money hidden away in some secret bank accounts, then it really is possible that it’s him. Now we only need
to figure out why he is choosing such a convoluted way to give his daughter these gifts.” “And himself.” “What?” “This renovation is actually for himself.” “That’s true.” They were both quiet. “Well, of course, this is just a wild guess, because it really doesn’t make sense that it is my father.” “And my strongest suspicion of Emmanuel is based on the fact that he disappeared the minute he caught sight of me.” Eliyahu was pacing up and down the large kitchen. Elisheva took two sandwich bags out of the drawer for Meir and Yitzy’s afternoon snacks, and she put some cookies in one and a fistful of cereal in the other. “It really is strange,” she mused. “I don’t intend to run after him all day and all night, Elisheva, okay? I tried, I called, I asked about him at the office, and I asked your father to tell him that we’re looking for him when he sees him next. But that’s it. For now, I’m leaving him alone…”

Elisheva nodded slowly. “You know, I asked my father a few weeks ago to try and find out what Emmanuel’s connection with U’shemartem is, but my father couldn’t really engage him in conversation.” “Maybe you should talk to your friend and see if she spoke to the director of U’shemartem again. Find out what happened there.” “I spoke to her briefly this morning. You saw how the day started here… I’ll call her again this evening.” “Did you tell her about the Arab contractor’s proposal?” “Yes.” “What did she say?” “That it’s really strange, but that I shouldn’t be too creeped out about it.” Elisheva grinned. “She suggested that I go for art therapy. She says it’s very liberating — her words.” “Does she think this Jalib story is just a figment of our imagination?” Eliyahu’s face grew somber. “No, she believes that he came and suggested what he did, but because I was talking to her as I was getting ready for work, I must have been huffing and puffing a little too much.” “So she does believe it.” “She believes us, but not the stuff that we’ve won.” Elisheva laughed. “She took the contractor’s phone number from me, and Rosenblit’s number, and the number of the lawyer who arranged the procedure with the apartment for us… Let’s see what she finds out.” “Give her Emmanuel’s number as well,” Eliyahu advised. “He’s not answering my calls.” “On purpose?” “I can’t know for sure, but I’m pretty certain about it.” She smiled. * * * * * “These mosaic tiles are very cute, but they do whatever they want,” Blumi grumbled, bent over the frame that she was trying to fill in with shades of bronze, gold and silver. “Are you sure that this glue is the right one for this, Batsheva?” “Yes,” her daughter replied, studying her mother’s work. “Is that what
104 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 2, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Goldy gave you?” “Yes.” “So she knows about these things. I mean, she’s a crafts teacher.” “She’s not just a teacher; she’s a therapist. But still, maybe she got mixed up.” Blumi grasped another little tile that had slipped out of place. “I don’t think she’d get mixed up about something as simple as glue,” Batsheva said. “And it’s really nice, Mummy. Really.” “I’m not sure it will turn out to be something I’d agree to hang on a wall here, but at least it’s good for my fingers.” Batsheva studied her mother’s fingers with a trace of suspicion. “Is something wrong with your fingers, Mommy?” “Chalilah, but I’m not getting younger, you know. At age forty-five I’m certainly allowed to start exercising my fingers. We don’t want them to start rebelling against me in another forty years. Not that they know exactly what to do right now, but…” She smiled, and for a moment, the images of two of her brothers rose in her mind. They would surely have scoffed had they heard this last sentence, and said mockingly that anyone who doesn’t train her fingers in cleaning and cooking should definitely find something else productive for them to do. “I never liked cooking,” she suddenly murmured. “What?” Batsheva asked, pushing away her chemistry notebook. “I dreamed of doing other productive things. I dreamed of being a tour guide, or solving mysteries… You know what it reminds me of? Elisheva’s phone call this morning. Strange things are happening there… It’s really odd…” She looked at the incomplete picture on the table and then said, “Nu, art teachers don’t get angry if you don’t do your homework, right? I’ll continue this during Goldy’s workshop, and maybe she’ll have some tips about what to do with these tiles that have a mind of their own. Please open that drawer behind you, Batsheva, and give me the little orange notebook that’s on the pile of papers.”

When Batsheva handed it to her, Blumi said, “I started it this morning. All right, so Rosenblit really knows nothing, or so it seems. I don’t have any way to track down the clock buyer, unless I hire a real private investigator.” “The clock buyer?” “Wait, I’ll tell you everything; just a second. Not that I’m totally ruling out the idea of asking for help from a detective agency in the event that I can’t get any more information. But first let’s see what I can find out myself.” Her sixteen-year-old daughter gaped at her, clueless. “U’shemartem did not want to talk about the apartment under any circumstances; they were really disturbed by my phone calls. So maybe I’ll stop badgering them. Meanwhile, I have to check who this Korman from Australia is, and I must speak to Elisheva’s Arab.” “Elisheva’s Arab?” Blumi looked fondly at her daughter. “I’ll make us each a cup of tea, and then I’ll tell you everything.” Twenty minutes later, they were sitting on the couch, Batsheva’s chemistry notebook long abandoned. “That’s an amazing story, Mummy!” Her eyes shone like they hadn’t in a long time. “It’s so intriguing.” “You think so? I agree.” Blumi cleared away the cups and wiped down the coffee table. “So what do you think? Should I start with the Arab or Australia?” “Whom do we know in Australia…?” Batsheva murmured. “Do we have any family there?” “Not any that I know of.” “So why don’t you try the Arab contractor for now?” But the Arab contractor was in no hurry to answer. The phone rang and rang, over and over. Finally, someone picked up. “’Allo?” said a thick voice. “Hello, is this Jalabi the contractor?” “Jalib,” the voice all but sneered into the phone. “I wanted to ask you some-

thing,” Blumi said, as Batsheva listened carefully, trying to understand. “Did you offer to renovate the apartment for the Potolsky family in Bnei Brak?” The Arab cut her off. “Don’t want to talk about it.” “But we do want to talk about it.” “So go to Emmanuel.” “Who?” He hung up. Blumi was silent for a few seconds, and then she put a heading on a new page in her notebook: Emmanuel. “There, I got something,” she said with satisfaction. “Now we need to try and find someone from Australia, and ask if he knows anything about Korman the millionaire. I wonder if his name was Em-
“I don’t intend to run after him all day and all night, Elisheva, okay?” manuel. I imagine that it was, and I have a good detective instinct.” “What do you mean ‘was’?” Batsheva asked curiously. “He passed away already.” “So why did the Arab send you to him?” “Maybe it was a curse of some type.” Blumi scanned the lone word she had written. “So, what do you say? Whom do we know in Australia?” “Which city?” “Sydney, if I’m not mistaken.” “I think…” Batsheva hesitated. “I think that Devorah Reichenhold from my class has a sister-in-law who’s originally from Australia. From Sydney. I don’t know how big the Jewish community is over there, and if she’s even heard of him, but if he was a millionaire, and a frum one…” “I don’t know how frum he was, exactly,” Blumi said, closing the notebook. “But you may as well try. Do you mind calling her to ask?” Batsheva hesitated. “All right,”
she said finally. Devorah Reichenhold promised to reach out to her sister-inlaw right then, and Batsheva and Blumi spent the next few minutes enveloped in tense silence. Blumi packed up the art supplies, and Batsheva opened her chemistry notebook, but all the rustles and movement failed to dissipate the curiosity hanging in the air. Batsheva leaped for the phone the second it rang. “Devorah?” “Hi, Batsheva. My sister-inlaw said the name is familiar, and she thinks he is the owner of the Momes shoe factory in Sydney. Have you ever heard of those shoes?” “Yes,” Batsheva replied. “I once had a pair of Shabbos shoes from Momes. Very expensive, but high quality. What more does she know about him? Like, would it be typical for him to commemorate his parents’ names in all kinds of strange ways?” “So we made up that she’ll call you directly, and you can ask her anything you want.” “Really? Thanks a lot. I hope it wasn’t too much of a bother for you.” “No, it was fine,” Devorah reassured her. “But it will take a few minutes, because she has to call her mother first to ask her for more details.” The minutes dragged on and on, and finally, after nearly an hour, Devorah’s sister-in-law called. Korman, yes. Not Emmanuel. Alexander — that was his first name. Alexander Korman. He was traditional. A millionaire, with no children or family. He donated to all kinds of causes, including frum community institutions in Sydney. Especially in commemoration of his relatives. But in the last four years, the man had stopped donating money in memory of his relatives and only gave continuing donations to existing causes. Unfortunately, he had gone completely senile. To be continued...

THE PULSE: President Trump gave his approval for the
General Services Administration (GSA) to provide transition assistance to the incoming Biden administration. The White House also signed off on Joe Biden receiving the President’s Daily Brief (PDB) on national security matters. Biden said that while he has not had direct contact with President Trump, the White House’s transition efforts are sincere. The president insists that he remains committed to the legal fight and his team is still battling the results in court, but their efforts have so far met with little success. Below are some allegations of misconduct that were widely circulated yet turned out to be less than sinister. ALLEGATION: There were more votes cast in Wiscon-
sin than registered voters. Wisconsin counted 3,239,920
112 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 2, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
votes but only has 3,129,000 registered voters. RESOLUTION: The 3,129,000 registered voters num-
ber is from the 2018 election. According to the Wisconsin Election Commission, there were 3.68 million active registered voters in 2020 and nearly 3.3 million cast ballots in the election. Wisconsin also allows same-day voter registration. Biden won Wisconsin by over 20,000 votes. The Trump campaign paid for a recount, which did not turn up any evidence of fraud. The recount netted Biden an additional 87 votes. ALLEGATION: Republican voters in Maricopa County,
Arizona, were given black Sharpie markers that would cause the ink to bleed and invalidate their ballots.
RESOLUTION: Maricopa County election officials clarified that their voting machines could count ballots marked with Sharpie ink. The election officials stated that Sharpie ink is actually preferable as it dries faster and does not smudge like ballpoint ink. Arizona Attorney General Republican Mark Brnovich said he has no evidence that the use of Sharpie markers disenfranchised voters. He dismissed allegations of widespread voter fraud in Arizona and pointed out that Republicans did better than expected in state-level elections. He said that “if indeed there was some great conspiracy, it apparently didn’t work.” ALLEGATION: Dead people voted in Pennsylvania,
Georgia and Michigan. RESOLUTION: A careful analysis of the cases highlight-
ed by those alleging that dead people voted resulted in a less than nefarious conclusion. Here are some examples: James Blalock died in 2006. It was alleged that he cast a vote in this election cycle. However, the vote in question was cast by his widow, who is registered as Mrs. James Blalock and always voted under that name. Deborah Jean Christiansen died in 2019 and allegedly cast a vote in Cobb County, Georgia, in 2020. In truth, the last ballot cast under her registration was in 2018. A different woman named Deborah Jean Christiansen, born in the same year, voted in Cobb County in 2020. William Bradley, who would be 118 in 2020 and died in 1984, cast a vote in the 2020 election. Michigan election officials confirmed that his son, also named William Bradley, cast a vote that was incorrectly entered under his father’s name. The son did not vote twice. Bradley is one of many allegedly dead voters found to be alive. Donna Brydges, who is 75 years old, confirmed to the AP that she is alive despite reports to the contrary. Pennsylvania officials estimate that approximately 100 votes were cast legally by people who succumbed to death during the time between mailing in their ballots and Election Day. Pennsylvania also uses a default birthdate of 01/01/1800 to protect the confidentiality of certain registered voters who are victims of crimes. This default date erroneously gives the impression of dead people voting. Even though occasional mistakes may happen, states have robust systems to strike dead people from their voter rolls. No evidence has been presented to indicate that widespread fraud of dead people voting was perpetrated. ALLEGATION: Biden received 100% of votes received overnight in Michigan. RESOLUTION: This claim was made by Matt Mackowi-
ak, a conservative commentator and chairman of Texas’ Travis County Republican Party. Mackowiak later retracted the claim and said that it was incorrect. Allegations were also made that trucks delivering food to election officials were, in reality, dropping off fraudulent ballots for Joe Biden; however, a Michigan judge dismissed these
charges as baseless when the testimony of those making these allegations did not hold up to scrutiny. Biden’s totals increased throughout the night as was expected because Biden’s supporters tended to vote absentee, and mail-in votes were tabulated after the in-person counts were reported. ALLEGATION: Michigan precincts had vote tallies that were out of balance RESOLUTION: Many Michigan precincts reported totals
that were out of balance. However, none of these discrepancies would be enough to overturn Biden’s victory of over 150,000 votes. The mismatches in the Detroit area applied to less than 400 votes. Election officials insist that these problems are due to bookkeeping errors and are not the product of fraud. Often these issues arise when one spoils their ballot and is issued a new one or when one signs in to vote but leaves before voting. These problems are not new and were worse in 2016 when Trump carried the state by a little more than 10,000 votes. ALLEGATION: Dominion voting machines used algo-
rithms to fraudulently increase Biden’s vote totals. RESOLUTION: This allegation was made by Sidney Pow-
ell, an attorney for the Trump campaign. She could not provide evidence to back up her claim, and the Trump team eventually cut ties with her. Georgia’s Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger ordered a hand recount of all votes tabulated by the Dominion voting machines in his state. No discrepancies in the machine counts were found. The Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency declared the election “the most secure in American history.” ALLEGATION: Pennsylvania had widespread irregulari-
ties with mail-in voting. RESOLUTION: Judge Matthew Brann, a longtime con-
servative Republican whose appointment to the bench was backed by the Federalist Society, called the allegations “speculative” and “unsupported by evidence.” He criticized the attempt to disqualify the mail-in ballots. He wrote: “In the United States of America, this cannot justify the disenfranchisement of a single voter, let alone all the voters of its sixth most populated state.” A federal appeals court also rejected the claims of fraud. Judge Stephanos Bibas, a Trump appointee, wrote for the three-judge panel who were all appointed by Republicans that “Free, fair elections are the lifeblood of our democracy. Charges of unfairness are serious. But calling an election unfair does not make it so. Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here.” Pennsylvania experienced delays in the tabulation of mail-in ballots because, unlike Florida, which allowed the counting of ballots as they arrived, Pennsylvania law barred the opening of mail-in ballots until Election Day.
December 2, 2020 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 113 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
ALLEGATION: Paper shredder trucks destroyed evidence of voter fraud in Georgia. RESOLUTION: The paper shredder truck that shredded documents at the West Park Government Center in Marietta, Georgia, was there for routine scheduled biweekly shredding of tax documents from the tax commissioner’s office located in the building. The truck was not servicing the Cobb County Election office located in the same building. THE IMPACT: The president and his allies
continue to contest the election results in many states. However, many states are moving ahead with the certification of their totals. The president’s legal actions may have a beneficial impact in upcoming elections. They will likely serve as an impetus for states to streamline their processes and improve mail-in voting procedures. States like Pennsylvania will probably amend their laws to allow mail-in ballots to be tabulated as they arrive instead of on Election Day. Wayne County will work to improve its bookkeeping of tallies. States will need to ensure that all changes to election laws follow the correct process and are not implemented unilaterally by a governor or state legislature. However, once all the allegations are heard in court and the election is certified, it is essential that faith in America’s system of democracy not be undermined. Due to social media’s advent, it is exceedingly easy for the purveyors of misinformation to spread their ideas to a broad audience. This is tragic because should people lose confidence in the ability to effect change through the electoral system, a resort to violence often becomes the only method to achieve one’s aims. The United States justified its involvement in the Iraq War because of the belief that the establishment of fair and free elections in Iraq and the Middle East would be an antidote to strife and violence. Natan Sharansky made the case that the spread of democracy is essential for the defeat of terror. Americans must remain confident in the ability of their country to conduct fair and free elections. State election officials from both parties have publicly made the case that the election results were accurate and have begun to certify results. Republicans and Democrats are both working hard to turn out the vote in Georgia’s upcoming Senate runoff. Despite the heated political rhetoric, they expect that the election results will accurately reflect the majority’s will.

When Chodesh Kislev makes its grand debut, I’m ecstatic. The jelly-filled doughnuts, the crispy potato latkes, the warmth and joy of family time — it’s Chanukah! Chanukah is also a great time for me to channel my creative energy into party ideas. Tablescapes, food, themes — I’m in my element! I always try creating a theme that’s unique yet classy, and of course, easy to pull off — like this one. I love how this presentation panned out, and I’m more than excited to share it with you. The black-and-white tones are sophisticated and elegant, yet the vibe is fun and joyful. May the light of the Chanukah licht bring happiness and simcha to all!

SAUTEED ONIONS
L AT K E BURGER Latkes? Check. Fried onions? Check. Pulled Beef? Check. Winner? Check, check! Having your latke serve as the “bun” is everything. It’s fun, it’s insanely delicious, and it’s sure to garner lots of oohs and aahs from your guests.
6 Spanish onions, sliced into half-rings (cut the onion in half vertically, then slice it horizontally into half circles) 6 tsp. olive oil DIRECTIONS 1. Coat the bottom of the pan with olive oil. Heat the pan on medium-high heat until the oil shimmers. 2. Add the onion slices, and stir to coat the onions with the oil. Spread the onions out evenly over the pan and let cook, stirring occasionally. 3. After 10 minutes, sprinkle some salt over the onions. To keep the onions from drying out as they cook, add a little water to the pan. 4. Let cook for another 30 minutes to an hour, stirring every few minutes. When the onions start sticking to the pan, allow them to stick a little and brown, but then quickly stir them before they burn. Continue to cook and scrape, cook and scrape, until the onions are a rich, browned color.
PULLED BRISKET 2 lb. second-cut brisket 1 cup ketchup
While the onions are sautéeing, prepare the latkes: LATKES (Yields 14–16 latkes)
1 cup barbecue sauce ¼ cup water ½ cup light brown sugar ¼ tsp. salt ½ tsp. paprika ½ tsp. garlic powder DIRECTIONS 1. Line a 9x13” pan with parchment paper. 2. Place the meat inside, then score it. (With a sharp knife, cut a deep X into the meat. This lets the sauce/juices seep in.) 3. Mix the sauce ingredients and pour the mixture over the brisket. 4. Cover tightly with aluminum foil and bake at 350° for 3 hours. 5. Once the meat is done, use two forks to pull apart and shred the meat. (I prepared the brisket a few days before serving and just warmed it up when I was ready to stack the “burger.”)
6 potatoes 6 eggs ½ cup flour 1½ tsp. salt Dash of pepper DIRECTIONS 1. Grate the potatoes and drain off all the liquid. 2. Add the remaining ingredients, mixing well. 3. To achieve the burger shape for the latkes, use a round cookie cutter to fry them. Place the cookie cutter into the pan and spoon some latke mixture inside. When the bottom of the latke starts turning golden, remove the cookie cutter, flip the latke, and fry it until the other side is also golden. A S S E M B LY Spread some spring mix on a plate and place a latke on top. Add a heaping tablespoon of sautéed onions. Top with a tablespoon of pulled brisket, then cover with another latke. Stick a skewer down the center of the “burger” so it stays neat and in shape.
SUPER CRISPY SALAD This salad was introduced to me several years ago by my aunt Chany, and it has since become a staple in our family. This is the salad we look forward to for yom tov and never get bored of. It has so few ingredients, yet it’s refreshing and utterly delicious.
INGREDIENTS 2 boxes fresh mushrooms, sliced 1 bag (8 oz.) romaine lettuce 1 lb. fresh snap peas 1 box alfalfa sprouts 1 cup toasted slivered almonds DRESSING 1 cup mayonnaise 1 T. vanilla sugar 2 T. sugar 2 T. lemon juice 1 tsp. parsley flakes 2 cloves garlic Pinch of salt and pepper DIRECTIONS 1. Combine the vegetables and the toasted almonds. 2. Mix the dressing ingredients and pour it over the salad.

This pull-apart doughnut tower was made by my very talented sister and her friend Chana Malka. They used a standard doughnut recipe for these mini doughnuts, and then glazed and decorated them. They then spread chocolate on a styrofoam cone and arranged the doughnuts on it.
A knotted napkin adds dimension to any place setting.
This black-and-white pattern is called buffalo plaid. You can find items with this print in your local party shops.

BOARDS
128 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
BOARDS There is nothing more impressive than a good food board. Loaded with a variety of foods and different spreads, there’s always something for everyone. I’m a huge fan of (any) boards because the advantages are (more than!) threefold: 1. It’s served buffet-style, which means there’s no plating and constant serving for the host. 2. Preparations are minimal and assembly is easy. 3. It’s enjoyed by young and old alike because (did we already say this?) there’s something for everyone. Also, it may look like something you wouldn’t think you can create — but it’s actually really simple to do. You just need the right boards, a variety of foods, and you’re ready to start! While a complete food board certainly looks like a piece of art, here are some tips for easy assembly: • Choose a platter according to the size board you want to make — large plates, trays and wooden serving boards all work great. Use one large platter, unless you’re planning to have platters on a few tables. In that case, prepare multiple smaller platters. • Add visual interest by using differently sized bowls for things like dips and spreads. Start by placing these bowls on the platter, then use them to prop up meats, fries and other components. • Next, place the larger components on the board, using the bowls as starting points. As you start placing things, don’t worry about filling in all the space. Reserve some of each component to fill in space later, if needed. Continue placing the foods in clusters until you’ve completely covered the board. This process is actually relaxing and fun; turn on relaxing music and let the magic happen. • Feel free to customize your board to your liking. The options are endless!

After all has been said and done, there’s something delightfully satisfying about sitting at a Chanukah party that you’ve helped orchestrate, especially one at your in-laws. There’s a heady peace in the midst of that happy chaos, in knowing that you’ve been through gift- and menu-hashing and can now bask in the results of all that hustling. So yes, I did feel almost petulant at the thought of missing out on that pleasure. My in-laws had gone ahead with longed-for renovations, and would still be sans an operational kitchen on Chanukah. And so, in an unprecedented twist, they’d be eating out. Instead of hosting the annual family get-together, they’d be gracing the tables of each of us married offspring, celebrating individually with one family per night. No collaborative planning. No matzav. No conference call to plan the conference call to decide the timing of the menu-and-gift-planning conference call. No downtime with all of us sibs-in-law laughing and scratching pen to paper in efforts to win the gaily wrapped mystery gift. The giddy frenzy of trying to connect, connect, connect before the big party was over and humdrum life got in the way again. But the desire to honor and impress some of the most important people in my life was alive and dancing. And when I fully shifted gears and accepted the scaling down of events, I felt privileged to finally give something back to my in-laws, whose life force seemed to derive from unconditional giving. So I happily snatched up the first night’s slot (I’d be the trailblazer, with no need to compare menus with anyone for fear of overlapping!) and went on to create a spread worthy of the most discerning Hungarian palate. And in a nod to fluffy childhood memories, we played a timeless children’s Chanu-
kah CD, which we paused at the perfect part to serenade Zeidy and Babby as they walked in: There was that telling creak of the door, the trill of happy kids, and then the CD Zeidy boomed: “AH GITTEN CHANUKAH!” There was lots of laughter at that, and our much downsized party commenced. What may have been lacking in fanfare was surpassed by the intimate atmosphere that touched down on our home. That first night of Chanukah was magical. The ambience was close and warm, with the world beginning and ending at our dining room table. Our kids, funnier than ever, loved the double delight of being home, plus the exclusivity of their grandparents’ attention. Zeidy’s lap was free for the taking, and he had ears only for their babbles and songs. And Babby’s stash of nosh and gifts — they were solely for our three tots! To the merry strains of Ah Latkele Hupp, I basked in the warmth of just us. We had my husband’s parents all to ourselves, and we were loving every second. While clearing up later that night, I reflected that once my in-laws’ apartment would be ready and they’d be back to hosting once again, I’d miss the intimate experience we’d been treated to. As it turned out, the experience has indeed been rendered priceless. Today I guard it fiercely in my vault of precious memories. Because oblivious as we all were at the time, two months after that Chanukah came my young and vibrant shver’s fatal clash with the dreaded disease. By Purim, my kids were asking where Zeidy was and why he wasn’t coming back. And this year, as I stare into the Chanukah licht and remember the man whose ahavas Yisrael burned so brightly that it kindled the spirits of all those around him, I’ll thank Hashem for orchestrating the gift of a goodbye party for Zeidy.

LET’S GET MELTING!
PREPARING THE WICK Start by dipping the wick sustainer into hot wax, and then firmly attaching it at the center of the glass bottom. You can also secure the wick perfectly in the center by ordering this great wickcentering device on Amazon.
METHOD 1: MICROWAVE
You will need microwave-safe containers with covers (for kashrus reasons). Fill each container with the desired amount of wax and colored candles. Cover, and set the microwave to two minutes. Remove and stir with a popstick.
METHOD 2: DOUBLE BOILER
Use disposable pans (for kashrus reasons). Fill a larger pan halfway with water. Place over a low flame. Wait until the water boils. Add the desired amount of wax and colored candles to a small pan. Place the pan in the water, and wait until the wax turns to liquid. Use a popstick to stir. You may want to use a tweezer to hold the smaller pan as it may get too hot to hold while stirring. For ! Parties
METHOD 3: HOT PLATE
If you are doing this as a group, you can melt large amounts of wax and keep all the colors on a hot plate so they stay melted. This way, everyone can use the amounts and colors they need as they work.

False Conductor This game is a riot! The objective of twisting simple answers to nonsense has reduced many a grown-up to tears of mirth. PLAY! PREP LIST:
A list of simple questions that do not require a yes or no answer. Make up your own, or enjoy this list I used at a party: • What grows on trees? • Name a vegetable. • On Chanukah we light the _____________. • Name a U.S. president. • Where do you sleep at night? • How many days is Chanukah? • Name one person at this party. • Name one low-fat food. • How many siblings do you have? • Where do fish swim? • What’s your name? • What was the Beis Yosef’s Chanukah question? • Men are from _____________.
Game objective: Like the game many of us associate with practicing our times tables, blurt the answer first and travel the most seats. Unlike grade school, however, questions in False Conductor must be answered with a lie. The conductor questions two people at a time, both standing. The first person to answer with something that is absolutely not the truth can move to the next seat and be questioned with the person sitting there. Example: How old are you? Blurt 150, and move a seat if you were first! The defeated player sits down and waits for her turn in the next round. The game continues as pairs of players are questioned and the first ones to answer correctly (or in the case of this game, incorrectly!) move seats. There is no limit to the number of seats a quick-witted player can travel; she can continue from one seat to the next as long as she answers first. This game can go on for as long as you fancy! At the end, everyone counts the number of seats they moved to tally up a winner.
• What color is a NYC taxi? • What’s your address? • Where’s a good place to keep a sheitel? • How much does each prize cost in Oorah’s auction? • When Antiochus himself went to war with the Yidden, what animal did he ride? • What do you use to brush your teeth? • How many sons did Matisyahu have? • Name a creature that flies. • What do we pour into the glasses of the menorah? • How many bedrooms does your home have? • Who is currently the richest person in the world? • Name one type of winter outerwear. • Because of the story with Yehudis, we eat _____________ on Chanukah. • How many corners does a hamentash have? • What number president is Trump? • What color is a banana? • How many seeds are there in a pomegranate? • What is paper made of? • What do you do when you’re hungry?

Mad Libs I will always associate this game with cozy winter afternoons and my older sisters. I think it was Glad that used to include these folded up funnies in packs of plastic bags. After we’d open a box, we’d sit around the table squishing our penmanship into the tiny blanks and laughing at the loony outcomes. I enjoyed Mad Libs so much that I’ve recreated them for a host of parties already. They never disappointed!
PREP LIST:
This may require the wakeup of your inner storyteller, but it’s so worth it! First write a short story. You might want to do a few to make the game last long enough. Then remove key words and identify their part of speech. Put a blank where the key words were, with their part of speech under the blank. If you don’t feel like writing one, you can use the sample provided. Going around the table, fill the blanks in your story by asking each person for a word to fill a blank. Of course, don’t share the context of the story until you’re done and have a wacky tale to read out loud!

Object Mania Of course, objects. Because that’s how we leave to Chanukah parties, with our ears ringing with reminders to not forget “your blintzes and grab bags for the kids and an object for the game!” In this particular instance you get to bring two objects, give your short-term memory a whopping workout, and take home some extremely random items.
PREP LIST:
Each participant should bring two random objects from their home. Look around your house to find them; they’re tucked into forgotten corners like your laundry shelves and junk drawer. You’ll be giving them away, so be nice. Here are some objects I remember playing with at a party at work: an air freshener (mine, I didn’t enjoy the smell and was surprised to see my workmates hankering for it), a can of tuna, a comb, a scented thingamajig to hang in the car, a mini sewing kit (I won it and still use it), etc.
PLAY!
Game objective: Remember what other players are holding as the items change hands at a dizzying pace. To begin, one player at a time holds up her items and names them aloud. Once all objects have been seen and named, they are to be held under the table throughout the game except for when they are in transit to another player. Absolutely no peeking. Let the fun begin! Going around the table, each person can request and receive any one item from another player as long as: 1) they remember which player has the item in question, and 2) this item was not requested in the previous turn. Once an item is requested, a turn must pass before it is requested again. If the player requests an item from the wrong person, she is out of the game and gets to keep whatever’s in her hands at the moment. Example: Shaindy asks Ruchie for the comb. If Ruchie doesn’t have it, Shaindy is out. If she does have it, she gives it to Shaindy, who holds it under the table. If Leah’s turn is next, she cannot ask Shaindy for the comb she just got from Ruchie. But Chany, whose turn comes after Leah’s, can. Enjoy this frenzy of focus to get your mini gifts!

Reconfigure is a premium women’s gym featuring the heated cabin that has taken Europe by storm. For weight loss, body shaping and muscle building, reconfigure is designed for women in every stage. I wanted to help my daughter. At age 16, she was still in the awkward teen years but was really struggling with her weight and general well being. At the recommendation of a friend I signed her up to Reconfigure and accompanied her to the initial appointment. I was mesmerized. Being in my second trimester, I was under the impression that exercising would be tedious, exhausting and unsafe. I was wrong. The private attention, personalized workouts and the heated cabin combined, aided my daughter tremendously, both with her weight loss and sense of well being. Tempted to try, I signed up and was hooked. 6 weeks later I am feeling great and looking even better. Reconfigure was a game changer for the two of us! — MRS G. Pic ‘n Caption If the notion of drawing makes you run for the hills — don’t. Stick figures are modern art, and the worse you are at drawing a straight line, the more uproarious this game is. PREP LIST: PLAY!
• Pen
Each player gets a pen and paper and writes a sentence at the top with as vivid imagery as they can muster. Seriously, go bananas with this one. Next, everyone passes • Weird scene their paper to the left, and each player should draw a picture depicting the sentence in mind on the paper they just got. Before passing this paper to the left once again, everyone folds the sentence over, leaving only the picture, which the next person must describe with an appropriate caption. Everyone then folds over the picture so only the caption remains and passes it on. All players must now draw a picture representing the caption they got. These steps are repeated until the sheets are full and there are many tall tales to read aloud! • Paper
Candy Facts This game is light, fun and versatile. Use your creativity to come up with really interesting questions! PLAY! PREP LIST:
A pack of sweets. You’ll need a few different colors, but not too many. See why: A question key that the players will follow, corresponding to the candy colors. For example: Red candy = embarrassing moment. Green candy = an item on your wishlist. Yellow = someone you admire and why. And so on.
Pass around the sweets and urge everyone to take as many as they’d like. Then have a good laugh when you tack up the question key and everyone sees how their indulgence pays off! Start going around the table. Everyone must answer the questions corresponding to the colors and amount of candy they chose. So yes, if a player helped herself to five yellow candies, she’d better have admired that many people!
Enjoy your party prep and remember that the less seriously you take yourself, the grander a time you will have. Ah freilichen Chanukah! 158 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 2, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

SAYING HALLEL The full Hallel is said on every day of Chanukah. There are several reasons given for this: 1) We light a different number of lights every day, just like on Sukkos, when a different number of korbanos were brought each day. Thus, we say a full Hallel every day of Sukkos, and so too on Chanukah. 2) The miracle renewed itself every day. 3) The Torah reading for each day of Chanukah is about the offering that the Nesi’im brought each day of the Chanukas HaMishkan. Since a different nasi brought a korban each day, we say Hallel every day.[1] There is a machlokes haposkim regarding whether women are also obligated to say a full Hallel.[2] Therefore, to abide by the opinions who are machmir, it is best for women to try saying the full Hallel every day of Chanukah. Ashkenazi women can also make a bracha before beginning Hallel, while Sefardic women should refrain from making the bracha and just say the Hallel itself. OBLIGATION OF WOMEN IN LIGHTING The halacha says that women are also obligated in the lighting of the Chanukah lights, because as mentioned above, the neis happened through Yehudis. Also, they too were saved from the decree of the Yevanim who’d take the women captive on the night before their wedding.[3] However, the minhag is that where there are men around, the men light and not the women.[4] The Chasam Sofer explains that since in the time of Chazal when the mitzvah of hadlakas neiros Chanukah was instituted everyone lit outside, they didn’t want to obligate women to go out and light among the men at night since it would detract from the kavod of women. Today, even though we light indoors, the minhag for women not to light remains in place.[5] However, in a house where there are no men around, a woman must light and make the brachos in order to fulfill her obligation of lighting the candles.[6] DAVENING AFTER LIGHTING The minhag in Klal Yisroel is for women to daven after lighting the Shabbos candles to be zoche to have kids who are talmidei chachamim. The reason for this is similar to that of why we say all types of harachamans that ask for things after Birkas Hamazon, which is that tefillos said at the time of performing a mitzvah are more easily accepted.[7] The reason we daven specifically for kids to become talmidei chachamim is based on the Gemara that says that one who is careful with the mitzvah of ner (lighting with good oil, nice wicks, on time, etc.) will be zoche to have banim talmidei chachamim.[8] Rashi on the Gemara says that this refers to being careful with neiros Chanukah and neiros Shabbos. So, at the time of doing the mitzvah for which the reward is banim talmidei chachamim, it is an auspicious time to say a tefillah of that nature.[9] According to this, it is a segulah to daven for our children to become talmidei chachamim after lighting Chanukah candles. It is also a good time for women to daven that their husbands become talmidei chachamim.[10] USING AND BENEFITING FROM THE LIGHTS One is not allowed to use and benefit from the Chanukah lights.[11] Several reasons are given for this: 1) Because of bizui mitzvah.[12] 2) Because it will look like one lit it for his own use and not for the mitzvah.[13] 3) Since the miracle happened with the Menorah of the Beis Hamikdash, the din is like the light of Beis Hamikdash, which one may not use.[14] Therefore, the minhag is to have a shamash so that if one makes use of the light of the menorah, it will be the light of the shamash, which is kept higher.[15] Today, if electric lights are on, one need not worry, since one is using those lights. However, even with our electric lights, there is still an idea to light the shamash according to Kabbalah.[16]

At this time of year, nearly every Yiddishe house features at least one wax-dripped windowsill. But this is far from the main association wax has with Chanukah… At the culmination of a victory over the Yevanim, when our forefathers searched for untainted oil to light the Menorah, it was only when they unearthed the jug and saw its unbroken waxen seal that the festivities really began.
Wax has been used for centuries to authenticate sealed products. Most famously, perhaps, monarchs and royal courts would issue official decrees with their waxen seal stamped on the handwritten orders. (Think the signet ring of Achashverosh.) By the thirteenth century, individuals had their own seals, which they’d use on contracts, deeds and wills. This came in handy at a time when many were illiterate and seals were used in place of signatures. The butchers would sign agreements with a seal bearing the image of a cow, while the baker would sign with one depicting a tuna bagel — though, perhaps without the tuna... Because seals were symbols of power and were used to authenticate a person’s wishes, they were typically destroyed after the owner died to prevent posthumous forgeries.
An estimated three billion pounds of wax are used in North America each year. Because wax is such a great sealant, half of that total amount goes for use in packaging materials!
WHILE HONEY MAY GET ALL THE ATTENTION AS A BEE PRODUCT, DON’T OVERLOOK BEESWAX. TO PRODUCE ONE POUND OF BEESWAX, BEES MUST PRODUCE SIX TO EIGHT POUNDS OF HONEY. CONSIDERING HOW MUCH GOES INTO MAKING HONEY, BEESWAX IS A VALUABLE COMMODITY INDEED! BEESWAX HAS SOME HEALING GRAINS THAT CAN HELP HEAL MINOR SKIN CUTS AND WOUNDS. APPLYING SOME ON THE LIPS IS ALSO ONE OF THE BEST WAYS TO PREVENT THEM FROM GETTING CHAPPED.

Old furniture, sliding doors and jammed windows and drawers can all benefit from wax, as it is an effective wood lubricant. Just rub the wood surfaces with an ordinary candle. A light coat is all it takes!
Ever wonder what you are chewing? One of the base ingredients in chewing gum is actually wax! Paraffin wax is edible, kosher and pareve! It is often added to chocolates to give them a glossy finish and to help them stay solid at room temperature. A coat of carnauba wax, which is derived from Brazilian palm tree leaves, is applied to fruits and vegetables to help preserve and protect them and to keep them shiny.
Before postal reforms, the prohibitive cost of sending a letter was a whopping 25 cents, a small fortune in those days (considering that you could’ve bought five pickles with that sum!). Since postage was based on the number of sheets mailed, and an envelope would have counted as an additional sheet, doubling the cost, letter writers folded their letter and sealed it closed with wax to avoid the extra expense. When the cost of postage was changed to be calculated by weight, a burgeoning envelope industry emerged, but the wax was still used to seal the envelopes. The death knell for sealing wax came only much later, in the 1830s, when pregummed envelope and folding machines were developed. With a couple of licks, a letter could be sealed and sent on its way. Today, wax seals are as unnecessary as handwritten correspondence. Yet, like many old traditions, it is pleasurable to practice, and adds a bit of personal distinction and panache to your communication.
MELT THE WAX. Light the candle and give it a moment to burn. Hold the stick at about a 45-degree angle to your paper, and let the wax drip down. Extinguish the candle.
CREATING A WAX SEAL Supplies needed: • Matches • Waxen candle (colored) • Seal/stamp
STIR AND SHAPE THE WAX. Using the end of the wax stick that has no wick, stir and shape the wax puddle to bring out any air bubbles, give it a uniform thickness, and mold it into the shape and size of your seal. CREATE A MOISTURE BARRIER. If you don’t create a moisture barrier on the seal before you press it into the wax, the hot wax can get stuck on the seal. So breathe, lick or dab the seal on a moistened sponge before plunging it into the wax. PRESS THE SEAL INTO THE WAX. Make sure the letter or design of your seal is right side up. Press your seal firmly into the wax, hold it there for five to seconds as the wax cools and hardens, and then gently remove it. If you meet resistance when trying to pull up the seal, let the wax cool further. USE CARE. You are playing with fire here, so be careful not to hold the flame too close to the paper, and be aware of flaming drips of wax that can drop from the stick. Now send your happy letter on its way!

Hey, what’s going on? What’s happening here? Are you all waiting in line for an audience with the sage?
Didn’t you hear? Today we can ask the sage for anything we wish.
Who would miss such an opportunity?
The sage sat on his armchair, and at his side were two advisers — our friends. They explained to him how important my request is and what it would do for me, and he agreed!
Did he accept your request?
What did you ask for?
How didn’t you hear about it until now?
Did you get what you asked for?
What did the sage tell you?
180 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
Seriously? I’m getting in line! I also want to ask for something!
It’s so nice that they helped you out.
Yeah, really nice!
The moment is arriving. In just a few minutes I’ll be there…
Oh, I’m waiting for my turn with the sage to ask him what I want…
One, two, three… nine more, and then it’s my turn!
With the sage’s permission, would you allow me to ask for your advisers to leave the room so that only the sage stays here?
My turn, finally!
No! My request will be answered if they leave…
How so?
I’ll be alone with the sage, sit in his presence a little! This is the greatest gift! Will you grant me that?
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US? “And Yaakov sent angels.” Yaakov Avinu sent before him the malachim that were created from his mitzvos. We wonder: Why did he send them? They could have helped him and advocated for him so he would receive reward for his mitzvos. Yaakov wanted to be alone with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. This was all he wanted. For him, this was the greatest reward he could have ever received. (The Sovraner Rebbe)

Uh… hmm…. The men’s job is to help you. They may advise me to accept your request by explaining to me how important it is… Wouldn’t it be a shame if they leave?
