MOUTHWATERING (Re: Black and White, Issue 62) Here’s what’s on plan for supper on the very first night of Chanukah in my home: those latke burgers featured in your publication last week. I could not get my eyes off that picture of deliciousness! In my home, I confess, served on a bed of lettuce, it’ll make for a full, filling meal, and so my menu is all planned. Thank you! L.M.
UNUSUAL WORDS (Boggle, Issue 62) One of the “new words learned” featured in the Boggle winner’s list last week was dulse. It is defined as “any of several coarse red seaweeds (especially Palmaria palmata) found especially in northern latitudes and used as a food condiment.” As an educated young lady, I would never have known that if I hadn’t looked it up. So I wonder if you shouldn’t stick to ordinary English words understood by most of your readers. Another player suggested inserting more difficultto-find nine-letter words. However, what’s difficult for one, catches another’s eye easily. Changing the sequencing of the letters won’t make a difference. You either spot it or you don’t. (Hint: If you see the suffix “-tion,” chances are the word will end with those letters.) My (much younger) granddaughter will often notice a simple word that totally bypasses my eye. DEDICATIONS
Walking up the block toward the newly constructed neighborhood shul, a Yid pauses and looks up to admire the magnificent edifice. As he takes in the sights, his eyes fall upon a mammoth sign above the entranceway, proclaiming that the building has been graciously donated by the most magnanimous Such-and-Such family in memory of a recently deceased relative. Approaching the doorway, he notices an additional, somewhat smaller plaque, this one declaring the names of those of the entranceway sponsorship. The lobby brings another dedication plaque. The hallway has yet its own sponsorship, as do the coatroom, coffee room, bathrooms and simcha room. Finally, after passing all these tributes to philanthropy, he arrives in the main beis knesses room and takes a seat. In front of him stands the glorious aron kodesh, with the names of benefactors adorning the beautiful paroches. The bimah, as well, displays the name of a donor, as do many of the bookcases. He turns his thoughts to tefillah and opens his siddur, and as he flips past the front cover, he is once again greeted with a now well-worn statement: “This has been generously donated by the most gracious… in memory of their grandparents.” As this scenario applies to almost every shul around the globe, the question begs to be asked: Are all these proclamations ideal? From their widespread acceptance, both today and in centuries prior, it is clear that this practice is tolerated in halacha, but is this something to be viewed as ideal, or merely as a necessary evil? Are we truly accepting of according honor and public tribute for financial reasons, or is this merely the price we need to pay in bowing to reality? And we can flip the question in
is wrong — but why would that cause someone to lose their reward for tzedakah? Can’t a mitzvah and an aveirah coexist in action? If a person does an aveirah while performing a mitzvah, Hakadosh Baruch Hu is eminently capable of dealing with each component individually, rewarding for the good and meting out punishment for the bad. It’s understandable that the donor be punished for his arrogance, but why should that negate the very real and tangible tzedakah that he gave? After all, the recipient has clearly benefited.[2] Apparently, the Rema is instructing as to the very core nature of tzedakah. The definition of tzedakah is an act of caring. It’s an act of stepping up to the plate as a member of Klal Yisroel to help out your teammates. The fact that I gave money to a cause does not necessarily mean that my action is tzedakah. The result alone does not define the action. Take for a moment the idea of corporate sponsorship. A company lays out a hefty amount of money to get their name on a stadium. Is this charity? Is this a statement of firm belief in sporting events? Understandably, this is nothing more than a high profile form of advertising. It’s a cold dollars-and-cents equation to promote the sponsor corporation. The fact that the sponsorship money ultimately promotes sports does not define the action. Tzedakah is much the same. An act of caring is tzedakah. An act of truly investing in worthy causes is tzedakah. Using the many needs of Klal Yisroel as a tool to promote your own personal brand?
Human nature remains much the same as it has always been. Since time immemorial, humanity has always been casting glances at neighbors, keeping track of their doings, and struggling mightily to keep up with standards both real and perceived. the other direction: As a donor, I would like to publicly affix my name to my donation. May I do so, or should I rather donate anonymously? The answer lies in understanding two halves of a statement made by the Rema in Hilchos Tzedakah.[1] To focus on the first half: The Shulchan Aruch, echoing the words of the Rambam, lays out eight distinct levels of methodology in distributing tzedakah. The less the potential embarrassment for the recipient, the greater the mitzvah. Immediately after, the Shulchan Aruch concludes with this listing the Rema adds a caveat. Loosely translated, this reads: “…Regardless, a person should not find self-aggrandizement in giving tzedakah, for if he does so, not only will he forfeit any reward he would have received for this tzedakah action, but he will even receive punishment for it.” These words are highly enigmatic. True, pompous self-promotion
IN SUMMATION: 1. The mitzvah of tzedakah is fulfilled when the donation is for the purpose of assisting the cause. Donations motivated primarily by self-promotion are not considered tzedakah and will bring the donor no reward. 2. It is permitted, and even recommended, to have one’s name publicized alongside one’s donation as this will encourage others to contribute as well.

That’s simply advertising, and will earn no reward.[3] If we stopped here, it would seem that we should be seriously limiting our dedication proclamations. It would seem likely that it’s permissible to simply write the name of the deceased for whom the merit of the donation was intended, while it would be frowned upon to write the name of the donor. But let’s move on. The second half of the Rema’s statement reads: “… With that said, it is nonetheless permitted for one making a donation to inscribe his name to leave a lasting memorial, and in fact, this is the proper thing to do.” What do we make of this? While self-promotion is not okay, we’re supposed to be putting up plaques with our names? Human nature remains much the same as it has always been. Since time immemorial, humanity has always been casting glances at neighbors, keeping track of their doings, and struggling mightily to keep up with standards both real and perceived. Whether we like it or not, we are constantly being influenced by those around us, and in a similar fashion, each and every one of us are constantly influencing and serving as a model to those around us. This is not a reference to great Torah leaders. This is about you and the person who sits next to you in shul. Cognizant of this reality, Chazal instructed us to constantly do our best, creating a positive force to match up to. Giving to the shul campaign surreptitiously may seem more proper, but when others are aware of it, it sets a standard. If Mr. Schwartz contributed to the campaign, am I going to be left behind? If Dr. Cohen made a donation to that cause, maybe it really is something worthwhile for me to give to as well.[4] Ultimately, it boils down to intent. Don’t give for the publicity; you’ll lose the whole value of the tzedakah you’re giving if you do. But if you’re ready to give simply because you truly value the cause, go ahead and stamp your name in that sefer or let your name be announced at the tzedakah drive — you’ll receive not only the benefit of your donation, but the exponential benefit of all those extra tzedakah dollars you generate.[5] Rabbi Elias is a maggid shiur at the Yeshiva Gedola of Hampstead in Montreal, Canada. Perhaps a good litmus test would be to ask yourself, theoretically, if you would still give this donation if you’d have to make it completely anonymous. It is also important to bear in mind that Chazal tell us that giving tzedakah “al menas sheyichyeh beni," so that my son who is ill should have a recovery, is a bona fide act of tzedakah. As the Gemara details, if the primary intent is truly to help the cause, an additional secondary intent will not negate that.

The war against COVID-19 is about to enter a new stage, with the first batch of vaccines due to be distributed as soon as next week. Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the first batch of 170,000 Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines could be available for health care workers and nursing home residents by December 15, pending safety and efficacy approvals. Cuomo described the vaccines’ arrival as “the light at the end of the tunnel.” Another 40,000 doses of a vaccine developed by Moderna could make its way to New York before the end of the month. By the end of December, 40 million doses are expected to be distributed nationwide. This would be enough to vaccinate 20 million people, since both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two doses, spaced approximately three to four weeks apart. According to Dr. Kelly Moore, associate director of immunization education at the Immunization Action Coalition, it is the latter dose that is considered to be the key element that will provide immunity, reported Gothamist. “The first dose may just simply prime the immune system,” observed Moore. “It prepares it, it gives it an idea, but it doesn’t really make it protect you, and it’s the second dose coming shortly after the first that seals the deal and really provides that protection.” Other companies are continuing their efforts to produce COVID-19 vaccines, with AstraZeneca-Oxford and Johnson & Johnson expected to seek FDA approval for their vaccines in 2021, reported The Journal News. Doubling the number of companies manufacturing vaccines will allow for an even larger number of people to be vaccinated. “This is the weapon that wins the COVID war, and we have to get serious about this,” said Cuomo, holding up a mock-up of a vaccine during a December 3rd conference. The long-awaited vaccines can’t come soon enough — COVID-19 infection rates are surging once again, and the number of reported pandemic-related deaths are hitting record levels throughout the United States. Vaccine rollouts will continue in the months ahead, with
the general public slated to be vaccinated in New York sometime in the spring. WCBS reported that testing is underway on a vaccine for children ages twelve to seventeen; the trial is scheduled to run over the next two years, with data demonstrating both its safety and effectiveness potentially available by June 2021.
CDC Trims COVID-19 Quarantine Guidelines Asymptomatic patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 have been given the green light to shorten their quarantine periods under new guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control. NBC News reported that the CDC has offered two possible alternatives to the mandatory two-week seclusion period for those who have no symptoms: either ending quarantine after a full ten days of isolation, or ending quarantine after seven days of isolation in conjunction with a COVID-19 test performed within the last 48 hours of the seven-day period turning back a negative result. In all cases, asymptomatic individuals who test positive should continue monitoring themselves for symptoms for the full fourteen days. The CDC acknowledged that the fourteen-day quarantine has been difficult for many people, including those who are facing pressure to go back to work or school as well as individuals who are mentally impacted by the lengthy isolation period. Shortening quarantine periods “may make it easier for people to take this critical action, by reducing the economic hardship associated with a longer period,” said CDC COVID-19 incident manager Henry Walke. But the CDC came under fire for the modification from those who felt that the agency should have invested more effort into finding ways to ease the burden on those in quarantine, instead of relaxing its standards because people were not complying, reported CNBC. With the CDC still maintaining that a fourteen-day quarantine is the best course of action, Boston University epidemiologist Ellie Murray expressed concern about the updated

DMV Allowing Online License Renewals Through End of 2020 There’s good news from the Department of Motor Vehicles for those whose licenses were due to expire anytime between March 1 through December 31 of this year. After months of closures, the DMV is offering only limited service at its offices due to COVID-19, making it extremely difficult for people to renew their licenses. Drivers whose licenses bear an expiration date anywhere from the beginning of March through the end of the month can renew their licenses online, provided they self-certify that their vision meets DMV guidelines. Those who renew online will be required to submit official results of a vision test within one year. Drivers had already been experiencing long waits at the DMV, with the Department of Homeland Security modifying its policy that had allowed air travelers over the age of eighteen to use a standard driver’s license as an acceptable form of identification. DHS had originally set an October 1, 2020, deadline for drivers to switch over to REAL ID–compliant or enhanced driver’s licenses to fly within the United States, a date that was extended to October 1, 2021, because of the pandemic.
Varying Toll Hikes Hitting Thruway in 2021 Prepare to be confused as you travel the New York State Thruway, with toll hikes taking effect on January 1, 2021. The Journal News reported that the Thruway Authority is implementing a 30% increase on the highway, raising prices for the first time in ten years. Drivers who don’t have E-ZPass will be affected by the Thruway toll hikes and will also be slapped with an additional $2 surcharge under the new cashless tolling system, with a $50 penalty added on for late payments. Out-of-state E-ZPass drivers will face a 15% toll increase on the highway while New Yorkers with E-ZPass will be spared. Unless they try to cross the Tappan Zee Bridge. Tolls at the new bridge will be
going up for everyone in increments. New York E-ZPass holders will be paying $5.25 in 2021 and $5.65 in 2021, with rates increasing for out-of-state E-ZPass users to $6.04 this January and $6.61 next January. Those who are enrolled in the E-ZPass commuter plan will see their tolls rising to $3.15 and $3.45 over the next two years, and drivers without E-ZPass will pay $6.83 in 2021 and $7.48 in 2022. There is one bright spot at the bridge for Rockland and Westchester residents who would be eligible for a new discount program that would keep the toll at $4.75 through 2022. Thruway Authority spokesperson Jennifer Givner said that the program is still being developed and details will be released in the future.

long with dreidels and donuts, parties and Chanukah gelt, there’s one Chanukah minhag that’s not as celebrated; to spend time just looking at the candles.
But many great people - in previous generations and still today – made it a point to sit down and just gaze at the heilige Chanukah lecht. In one example, the Sefer Nefesh Dovid relates that ‘’he enjoyed’’ sitting and looking at the candles at every possible moment. He wouldn’t leave the room unless absolutely necessary and even then, he would make sure to stay near and glimpse at the candles from time to time.
What is it about our eyes, about the act of looking, which is so meaningful? Our eyes – these small organs often taken for granted are potent sponges. In a physical sense they absorb millions of light rays in our environment for our brain to

translate into images. And in a spiritual sense too:

The Binas Yisrael tells the story of a man who suffered from depression. The word ‘’depression’’ may not yet have been a common term, but the ‘’illness of black bile’’, as it was then known , was still very real. The man could just not find a way forward and this was obviously taking its toll on him and his family. Desperate, he went to pour out his heart to the Apte Rav, zy’’a. ‘’Look at the Chanukah lecht’’ came the concise but clear reply. Indeed, the man returned home in time for chanukah,
followed the instructions, and woke up the next morning a different person; a cheerful, healthy, happy person. This is the power we draw from the candles; the power to fix, improve, and heal ourselves. But that’s not all. Beyond the ability to mend and enhance, we also receive the power to bring down new realities: ‘’By looking at the candles you can affect miracles and wonders, because the power of looking contains in it the power of creating’’ (Yitav Panim).
THE ABILITY TO CREATE – WHAT? The impact of our gaze is a powerful tool that we all own. This is no secret for those who’ve delved into the subject of Eyin Harah; Contrary to popular belief, Eyin Hara is not a magical, mystical power beyond our realm of control. Rather, it’s the negative energy created by someone else’s jealous, ’imfargin’ing glance. It’s the real influences created with the power of his eye. It’s a concrete force that can be recognised and with the right techniques, neutralised. In many ways, Eyin Hara - the ‘’evil eye’’ - is just part-and-parcel of our lives in this imperfect world. Recap: Eliyahu tells Elisheva that he’s pretty sure Emmanuel is somehow tied to all the strange events happening to them, especially as he seems to be avoiding them. Blumi continues her detective work for Elisheva. She finds out that Jalib the Arab is somehow connected to someone named Emmanuel, and that Alexander Korman, the millionaire from Australia, had gone senile four years earlier and hadn’t been making donations in memory of his family since then. “Senile?” Eliyahu checked the sign on the Ramat Gan building he was standing next to. Yes, this was the address the nursing home director had given him. “Four years? Are you sure?” “Unfortunately yes. That’s what they told Blumi.” “This doesn’t sound good…” Eliyahu bit his lower lip. “If it wouldn’t be so late, I would pop into Rosenblit’s office. I think it’s right in this area.” He walked into the stairwell and looked around with interest. He had expected to find that Emmanuel lived in an old, neglected building with peeling paint. Instead, he found a neat, relatively new, well-kept place. There was nice lighting, a landscaped garden, and a metal plate on the mailbox bearing the name Emmanuel Ben-Tal. He wondered if this Emmanuel, too, had won an apartment in an obscure raffle. “Maybe it isn’t too late. Try,” Elisheva suggested. “It’s only 8:30. We once had a meeting with him in the evening. Lawyers work all kinds of hours; they don’t always finish work at five o’clock on the dot, like in lots of other offices.” “All right, maybe.”
“Try. I just feel like I can’t stand this subterfuge anymore.” “Really? Why? Do you think someone had bad intentions here?” “I don’t know, good, bad, but I do know that someone has been mixing into our lives on a regular basis for more than half a year now, and it needs to be looked into.” “Okay,” he agreed. “Let’s see when I finish here with Emmanuel. Maybe I’ll have time to stop in at Rosenblit’s place afterward.” On the third floor, Eliyahu knocked on the door once, twice, and a third time, but was met only with a heavy silence. After a pause he pressed on the bell, and recoiled when he heard the loud, jarring chime resonate through the house. He hesitated for a few seconds before pushing the bell again, but then he did it anyway. The door opened a crack; the thin chain of the bolt ensured that it would not open any further. One of Emmanuel’s eyes peered out. “Yes?” he asked coldly. “Emmanuel, I want to speak with you. Can I come in?” “No.” The eye flashed angrily. “Absolutely not.”

He still has a tremendous fortune and all that, and his paperwork is valid. Is it not possible that one of his children, who was probably his caretaker, could make phone calls in his stead?” “It’s certainly possible, but he had no family. And it was the voice of an elderly man.” The office phone also began to ring, making the atmosphere that much more tense. “So it was not his son.” “So who was responsible for him in his final years?” “You are basing your claims on rumors, Rabbi Potolsky.” “And if those rumors are true?” “Then how am I supposed to know who was responsible for him? He was the one who reached out to me, personally, without any middleman.” Rosenblit hesitated for a moment. “You know something? It’s possible that even if he wasn’t lucid every now and then, he had good moments, and that’s when we spoke.” “You spoke a lot?” “Not much. Most of his instructions came by fax.”
Eliyahu was quiet. “Do you know a person named Emmanuel Ben-Tal, Mr. Rosenblit?” he asked after a moment. “No. How’s he connected?” Eliyahu sighed. “He’s connected to two of the other stories.” “Sorry. I can’t help you more than I already have.” The lawyer reached for the phone, which had begun ringing again. Eliyahu pushed his chair back. “Thanks anyway.” “You’re welcome.” It would have been more apt for him to say, “No reason to thank me,” Eliyahu mused as he made his way out, but, perhaps there was something. Because during the course of the conversation, the lawyer had causally conceded

Were his parents’ names really Peretz and Tziporah Genendel?” He cleared his throat. “All matters relating to my clients are confidential.” “I understand. Tell me, please, if he was senile, who could have used his name to withdraw money from his account?” “All matters relating to my clients are confidential, ma’am,” he repeated coldly. “I understand. Thank you.” Detective Blumi hung up the phone in disappointment. Rosenblit remained standing in his office for a long moment, and then walked out and looked at the waiting room. It was empty. Potolsky was gone. Too bad. He was pretty sure that the two conversations had been timed. The question was if they were perhaps right. Was it possible that he had been a partner to a scam of some kind, without his being aware of it? He went back to his desk, looking for the email address where he’d received the message about Korman’s death. He had to check who had dealt with the money matters and the factory after the demise of the lonely millionaire. Perhaps there were distant relatives who could tell him the truth about Korman’s final few months.
After a pause he pressed on the bell, and recoiled when he heard the loud, jarring chime resonate through the house. He hesitated for a few seconds before pushing the bell again, but then he did it anyway.

Focus on Georgia THE PULSE: The political focus is now on Georgia, where
the results of the upcoming January 5th Senate runoffs will establish control of the U.S. Senate for the next two years. In his first post-election rally, President Trump traveled to Georgia to encourage his supporters to vote for the Republican candidates. BACKGROUND: Georgia election law mandates that a Senate candidate win more than 50% of the vote to be declared the winner. If no candidate crosses the 50% threshold, the state holds a runoff election between the two top candidates. In the November 3rd election, incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue won 49.7% of the vote, and his opponent Democrat Jon Ossoff won 47.9%. A thirdparty candidate, Shane Hazel of the Libertarian Party,

won 2.3%. Georgia also held a special Senate election where Democrat Raphael Warnock won 32.9% of the vote, Republican incumbent Senator Kelly Loeffler won 25.9%, and Republican challenger Doug Collins won 20% of the vote. The state called a special election because Georgia Senator Johnny Isakson resigned in December 2019 due to health reasons. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp appointed Loeffler to fill Isakson’s seat until the next election. The winner of the special election runoff will fill the seat until the end of what would have been Isakson’s term in 2022. WHY IT MATTERS: Republicans have secured 50 seats
in the incoming Senate. Democrats have 46 seats, and two independents caucus with the Democrats. If Democrats win both Georgia Senate seats, it will result in a 50-50 tie. A tie in the Senate is decided by the vote of the sitting vice president. Therefore, a pick-up of two seats will effectively
transfer the Senate to Democratic control. Such a scenario would not just allow Democrats to win close votes but would also give them control of Senate committees that decide which legislation gets to a floor vote and which executive branch and judicial nominees get sent to the full Senate for a hearing. A loss of Republican Senate control would significantly impact Republicans’ ability to curtail a Democratic agenda and give Democrats control of both houses of Congress as well as the executive branch. DAVID PERDUE (R): Perdue won election to the U.S. Senate in 2014. He has a strong pro-Israel record and cosponsored the Israel Anti-Boycott Act, which would make it a federal crime to engage in boycotts against Israel. He supported the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Climate accord, opposes Obamacare, and favors cutting legal immigration to the U.S. by 50% over ten years. Perdue has faced insider trading allegations. In 2019 he stood accused of dumping stocks based on Senate briefings on the COVID-19 pandemic. Perdue was cleared of wrongdoing by the Senate Ethics Committee. He has recently come under fire for cosponsoring a bill to reduce regulations on medium-sized banks while he held a stock interest in medium-sized Regions Bank. JON OSSOFF (D): In 2017, Ossoff narrowly lost the election in Georgia’s 6th District, which was considered reliably red. His positions are considered progressive on health issues and centrist on security and job issues. He has attacked his opponent for falsely claiming that the American Communist Party endorses him and for running an ad (later withdrawn) that depicted him with a large nose, which he claimed was meant as an anti-Semitic trope. Ossoff’s father is Jewish, and Ossoff publicly identifies himself as such. Ossoff is 33 years old and, should he win, would be one of the youngest senators ever to assume office. KELLY LOEFFLER (R): Loeffler is a staunch Trump ally.
During the campaign, she touted her 100% voting record on policy supported by the president. According to FiveThirtyEight, she is the only senator to hold such a record. Her husband Jeffrey Sprecher is chairman of the New York Stock Exchange. Loeffler has also faced insider trading allegations, though the Senate Ethics Committee concluded that she engaged in no wrongdoing. RAPHAEL WARNOCK (D): Warnock has served as a pastor in Atlanta since 2005. He was a leader in the Georgia campaign to expand Medicare coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Loeffler has attacked Warnock for welcoming Fidel Castro to New York, where he served as an assistant pastor in 1995. Warnock has dismissed the allegations by saying that he was merely an assistant pastor at that time and was not able to make decisions regarding inviting Castro to address the congregation. Warnock told CNN’s Jake Tapper that he absolutely understood why people would be appalled by those celebrating Castro. Warnock has also received substantial criticism for his past comments on Israel.
In a 2018 sermon, Warnock accused Israel of shooting “unarmed Palestinian sisters and brothers like birds of prey.” In 2019, Warnock signed a document that accused Israel of engaging in “patterns that seem to have been borrowed and perfected from other previous oppressive regimes” and called the West Bank’s heavy militarization “reminiscent of Namibia’s military occupation by apartheid South Africa.” To clarify his stance on Israel, Warnock penned an op-ed entitled “I Stand With Israel,” detailing his support for Israel and his commitment to fighting anti-Semitism. He said that he opposes the BDS movement and opposes conditioning aid to Israel. He wrote that “without reservation, you can count on me to stand with the Jewish community and Israel in the U.S. Senate.” While Warnock has claimed that his comments critical of Israel were taken out of context, he has not retracted them or apologized. Joe Biden positioned himself as a centrist and was able to appeal to Georgia’s voters. However, Warnock’s progressive positions on race and crime may make him too far left of a candidate for a Georgia electorate that tends to vote Republican. VOTER FRAUD ALLEGATIONS: President Trump has
alleged that voting irregularities cost him the election in Georgia. Sidney Powell and Lin Wood, two lawyers pursuing such allegations, publicly called on the president’s supporters not to vote in the Georgia election until the elections can be guaranteed to be fair and transparent. Former Speaker of the House and Georgia Congressman Newt Gingrich slammed Powell and Wood for discouraging voter turnout and pointed out that such an approach can cost the GOP control of the Senate. Many Republican political operatives fear that the talk of voter fraud will depress voter turnout for their cause. Gabriel Sterling, the Georgia Republican state official tasked with voting system implementation, said that “this (talk of voter fraud) has all gone too far” and “that it needs to stop.” He called on Loeffler and Perdue to speak up because he fears that otherwise, “Someone’s going to get hurt, someone’s going to get shot, someone’s going to get killed, and it’s not right.” THE IMPACT: Control of the Senate hangs in the balance;
however, even if Democrats win control, they will still face limits in implementing their agenda. On many issues, individual senators can invoke a filibuster, and Democrats would require 60 votes to invoke cloture and move to a floor vote. Furthermore, the Democratic caucus includes senators who span the ideological spectrum, from Bernie Sanders of Vermont to Joe Manchin of West Virginia. In any scenario, getting legislation passed will likely require bipartisan support to proceed. Just this week, the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus flexed their legislative muscle and strong-armed party leadership to get COVID-19 relief back on the legislative agenda. Control of the Senate may also affect the choice of Biden’s cabinet positions. Senators Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Cory Booker and Amy Klobuchar are all considered contenders for cabinet roles. However, it is unlikely that Democrats would put a possible Senate majority at risk by opening up additional Senate seats to an appointment and special election.

VANILLA CUPCAKES IN ICE CREAM CONES Is there anything more magical to a child than the sight of an ice cream cupcake crowned with frosting? Note: While dairy ingredients will always taste better, you can substitute the butter and milk for margarine and coffee creamer.
INGREDIENTS 12 cupcake-shaped cones or regular cones
¾ cup sugar
1¼ cups flour
2 T. oil
1¼ tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. vanilla extract
¼ tsp. salt
2 eggs, at room temperature
6 T. butter, at room temperature
½ cup plus 2 T. milk
FROSTING 1 carton (16 oz.) of whip topping or heavy cream ½ box (3.25 oz.) vanilla pudding Food coloring of choice DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. Combine flour, baking powder and salt in a medium-sized bowl. Set aside. 3. Add butter, sugar, oil and vanilla to a large mixing bowl, and beat well until light and fluffy. 4. Add the eggs, one at a time, and mix until mostly combined. 5. Add half of the dry ingredients and give the batter a quick mix. Slowly add the milk and mix. 6. Add the remaining dry ingredients. Mix until just combined; do not overmix. 7. Divide the batter evenly among the twelve cones. 8. Bake the cupcakes for approximately 35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. 9. To prepare the frosting, whip the heavy cream or whip along with the vanilla pudding, until stiff peaks form. 10. Divide the frosting according to how many colors of frosting you want to create. 11. Add a drop of food coloring at a time to each part of the frosting, and mix until the desired color is attained. 12. Place some of each color whip side by side in a pastry bag fitted with the star tip, and swirl on top of the cupcake to create an ombre effect.

1½ cups seasoned corn flake crumbs.
1 cup milk 8 oz. shredded cheese

INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS 1. Cook the pasta according to package directions. Drain. 2. In a pan, melt the butter, then sprinkle in the flour. Cook for 2 minutes. 3. Add milk and stir. Cook for 2 more minutes. 4. Remove this mixture from the heat and stir in cheese. Stir until melted. 5. Add salt and pepper to taste. 6. Pour the cheese mixture over the pasta and mix to combine. 7. Pour the cheese-coated pasta into a shallow pan, and refrigerate for 2 hours. 8. Form mac and cheese balls using a cookie or ice cream scooper. Freeze until firm. 9. Mix the eggs in a shallow bowl. Season them with salt and pepper. 10. Place the seasoned corn flake crumbs in a separate bowl. (If you don’t have seasoned corn flake crumbs, you can season your own by adding a generous pinch each of salt, pepper, garlic powder, and dried herbs of choice, such as oregano and basil).

CREAM CHEESE CHOCOLATE TRUFFLES Chocolate and sprinkles: a delight for the eyes and the palate.
INGREDIENTS 8 oz. cream cheese, softened 1½ cups confectioners’ sugar 1½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips, melted 1 tsp. vanilla extract Pretzel sticks 1 bar milk chocolate Toppings of choice DIRECTIONS 1. In a medium bowl, beat the cream cheese until smooth. 2. Add confectioners’ sugar and mix until combined. 3. Add the melted chocolate and vanilla, and mix until well blended. 4. Refrigerate the truffle mixture for one hour. 5. Roll the truffle mixture into balls, and insert a pretzel stick into each ball to serve as a skewer. 6. Over a double boiler, melt milk chocolate until smooth. 7. Dip the truffles into the melted milk chocolate, and allow the excess to drip back into the bowl. 8. Dip into desired toppings to coat.

INGREDIENTS 2 loaves sliced white bread, crusts removed 8 oz. cream cheese ½ cup sugar, divided 1 egg yolk

1 cup melted butter 1 tsp. cinnamon DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400°. 2. Flatten the slices of bread with a rolling pin and set aside. 3. In a mixing bowl, beat the cream cheese, ¼ cup sugar and the egg yolk until smooth. 4. In a separate bowl, combine ¼ cup sugar with the cinnamon. 5. Spread a thin layer of the cheese mixture on each flattened slice of bread, then roll it up, jellyrollstyle. 6. Roll each blini in the melted butter and then in the cinnamon sugar. 7. Place the blinis in a pan, and bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden.

The thought of rich, fatty fare, with more powdered sugar and fried goodies served than any other week of the year, has many a child (and child at heart) smacking their lips in anticipation for the succulence in store. We asked our writers what taste is on their tongues when they think of these celebration-filled nights, and they spoke of childhood delights that leave our mouths watering and eyes glittering with their joy-filled memories of Chanukah.

Were menorahs, latkes and dreidels on my mind as I waltzed home from school on Erev Chanukah? Of course. My delight only intensified knowing that the long yawn of the school day when I shuffled impatiently in my seat would be stifled immediately upon my homecoming. My father tzindt the licht right after shkiah. Sometimes I would enter the house together with my father, who was coming home after davening Mincha. The sight of him clutching a grocery shopping bag made my eyes glitter then — and my heart dance now with nostalgia. After the menorahs were lit, his and ours; after the songs were sung — and we children were encouraged to raise our voices with gusto; after a dance went round and round, as was part of our ritual; then Tatty ceremoniously took the shopping bag off the top of the seforim closet. Gleefully (I’m not sure whose glee exceeded whose), Tatty handed each of us our own bag of chocolate Kliks. How much richer could one get? An entire bag of those milchig delectable, melt-inthe-mouth, cost-a-fortune chocolate balls! I clutched my bag tightly, then carefully ripped it open to take out one treasure, place it daintily in my mouth, suck it, lick it, relish it. One by one, each one was given undivided attention. The height of fancy nosh in the ’90s was Fruit by the Foot, Gushers, Fruit Snacks. Those were reserved for the most special occasions. Kliks brought a treat to an entirely new level. And those Kliks are what I associate with the special joy of Chanukah. As the years went on and Kliks expanded their line of products, my father would buy us different varieties. He would also purchase other types of nosh to be distributed the rest of the Chanukah nights. But nothing rivaled the first night’s Klik delicacy. Ecstatic about my special treat, I would be shocked that I wasn’t able to finish the entire bag — and how I tried! But I see now that more than just Klik balls remained of that night; there are also the delicious memories that I savor still.
How much richer COULD one get? An entire bag of those milchig delectable, melt-in-the-mouth, cost-a-fortune chocolate balls!

Candy-filled dreidels still make my heart leap. They encapsulate all that Chanukah stood for in my kiddie mind. Writing about them makes me smell that jelly-bean smell and see each bright orb so perfect and filled with promise. All the glow, all the joy, all the love of my parents for buying me this glittery thing filled with wonder l’kavod Chanukah. (The mighty fought, the righteous won — let’s eat jellies!) The pleasure lay in the choosing, of course. Mother and I would amble into the
grocery around the corner. (Welcome to the past; hold on while I stockpile chew-chews!) And while she ventured somewhere dreadfully boring like the produce section, I beelined for aisle three, place of magic. Past the doughnuts left of the entrance, sharp right across the newspapers, here! Sandwiched between the colorful candles and those twin cherry lollies that all of my classmates would be giving each other come Purim. Here were the dreidelshaped containers of sugar happiness that I’d consume indiscriminately, my palate not yet jaded and discerning and sending up prim requests for coffee and salted caramel. And into gleeful machinations I dove, my focus putting to shame any esrog dealer. This one is pink, but the green one has one more jelly. And this purple one has a better dreidel inside

but it has two black jelly beans. Ew. Maybe the blue? But those were for boys. Mommy could fill two carts while I ruminated. And when she came to get me and I had the Hope Diamond — er, green dreidel — clutched in all ten fingers, of course I catapulted right back to square one because the pink was for sure better. Finally, the hearty ruckus of the checkout counter. Remember that this was the very beginning of the 21st century, when no one in the food chain had ever heard of lowering the volume on, let alone muting, a barcode scanner. “Tee-tee! Tiddle-dee!” Here, HERE. Coming up behind a lumbering orange juice (white, yellow and black, Lakewood Farms; the taste you grew up on), my sweet dreams in 3D. Tip-toe, reach out, grab. A triumphant, “Tiddle-dee!” and my simchas yom tov was snagged in a bag. Thanks, Tatty, Mommy!

Growing up, the standard fare in our home consisted of homemade chicken burgers, brown rice and hearty vegetable soup, with ample salad to go around. The food was abundant, delicious and undeniably healthy. With six weight-conscious daughters, and a history of diabetes in the family, my mother wasn’t taking any chances. Perhaps that’s why the Chanukah pot stands out in my mind with such glaring incongruity. Come the first night of Chanukah licht, and the small round pot would be removed with great ceremony from its spot in the cabinet beneath the stove, then filled with glistening canola oil. Beside the pot, in all its shining glory, sat a large plastic mixing bowl filled with the stuff of our Chanukah dreams: doughnut dough! Pull, tug, drop. The frying instructions were fairly simple. Mommy’s doughnuts didn’t require perfectly round circles of dough; if anything, the uneven crevices enhanced the doughnut’s crispy deliciousness. We didn’t need jelly, and we certainly didn’t need caramel. Sure, we fooled around each year, experimenting with assorted ice creams and sauces, but always, always, we went back to the original. Pure, unadulterated doughnuts, straight from the pot. A shake of confectioners’ sugar (if our taste buds could endure the five-second wait!) and we were good to go. Today, I stand in my tiny kitchen, miles away from my mother’s, desperately attempting to recreate the tastes and memories of my childhood home. I think of my mother, working tirelessly in the kitchen on what must have been exhausted feet. Despite the long hours she put in at her job, we always knew that come hadlakah, our Chanukah treat would be ready and waiting. Struggling with yeast that doesn’t quite rise and flour that needs to be sifted twice, I haven’t quite mastered the ease with which my mother effortlessly whipped up batch after batch. As I pound out the dough and aim to heat the oil just right, I wonder at how she did it. And as I pull, tug, drop, I daven that a bit of my love comes through in this labor of cooking and care. And sometimes I wonder, as I munch on one particularly tasty doughnut, if that little prayer may have been my mother’s secret ingredient all along.

I walked into the noisy, crowded basement on that first night of Chanukah, eagerly scanning the smiling faces for the cousins I hadn’t seen in what seemed like forever. Little Bracha’la ran ahead of me, squealing with delight, but my seven years of life made me way too dignified for that. I smiled. I waved. I showed off the gap where my two front teeth used to be. “Did you bring it?” Chany demanded, echoed by Suri, Leah’la and all the others. She didn’t have to specify. We all knew that my mother’s dreidel pancakes were the highlight of the extended family Chanukah party — at least in the opinion of the younger set. “Sure we brought it!” I laughed, proud as a — well, proud as a pancake, I’d say! “My mother made zillions of them and they’re precious!” It was the ultimate compliment from the most discerning customer base. While my little cousins swarmed around the pans of pancakes shaped like little dreidels (spoiler alert: my mother had a special pancake mold shaped like a dreidel!) I felt like the queen of the evening. There must have been other specialties and delicacies, running the gamut from lasagna to good old doughnuts and latkes, but the consensus among the junior division was that our pancakes won the prize. Not once. Not twice. Not ten times. It took

first place for years and years, and that crown of pancake glory sat solidly on my little head from toddlerhood through my teenage years. I handled it differently with each passing year, of course. Patent pride morphed into eye-rolling tolerance. Sometime in my high-school years, I learned to sigh with that perfect cadence, saying, “Yeah, I don’t know what my mother was thinking, frying thousands of these oily things.” And all my teenaged cousins nodded and eye-rolled along with me, though a glimpse at their plates showed a surprising number of those “oily things” rapidly disappearing. I grumbled throughout the hours of frying that preceded the annual Chanukah party. I sniffed at the calories each pancake contained. But truthfully, I never lost that secret pride in our precious Chanukah pancakes! May my mother have the ko’ach and desire to continue frying them in the zillions for many, many years to come!

My heart feels warm and complete, and the sweet taste I am left with has nothing to do with the sour stick tickling my taste buds. * * * * *
He’s singing it all wrong! An intense longing fills me. I want to be home. Images rise in my mind, the aluminum foil–covered windows, crispy latkes, heated dreidel games. At my side, my French roommate hums along with Rabbi Kohn’s intonation. Seminary is amazing, but now the homesickness threatens to engulf me in its roaring wave. I race to the privacy of my room. Clutching the phone in trembling hands, I hear my father’s melodic voice waft across the miles. Slowly, I open the parcel from my mother, reaching for the small transparent bag under the chocolate doughnuts. Join our competition from Gateshead! I finger the jellies and gumdrops, rainbow colors filling my palm. Now I am at the kitchen table again, the sounds of laughter and love a soothing background melody. I close my eyes and let the magic fill me with the sweetness of home.
The sweet taste I am left with has nothing to do with the sour stick tickling my taste buds. I stand in the candy aisle, the heavy scent of sugar filling the air. My eyes hit upon the multicolored chocolate lentils and licorice whips, and suddenly I am five, seven, ten years old again. The wind howls angrily against the window panes, but inside, Tatty’s and Mendy’s menorahs burn bright. The orange flames greedily lick up the oil — blue and red with a touch of gold. I can watch them forever. But it’s time! We gather quickly around the creaky table, eyes alight. Soon we have a messy pile of assorted nosh in front of us and a ticking stopwatch. The race is on. Who can create the most original menorah? So we sit and try. Frown. Start again. Slowly our masterpieces start appearing. Excitement runs high on our silent turf. Then we hear the dreaded beep-beep-beep. Time’s up! My parents stand proudly as we all admire Nechama’s 3D

I’m not sure what it is that beckons us to the kitchen — whether it’s the sizzling of frying oil or the unmistakable smell promising gastric delight in the near future that dispatches us to the counter to pilfer a few ready samplings from under sheets of paper towel. And sure enough, on the stove sits the two-piece Frenchfry pot. The oil is a fragrant, shimmering mass of gold. “It’s ready!” we say. The potatoes, cut into thin strips, are resting in a bowl of water at my mother’s elbow so they remain sparkling white. She pats a whole bundle dry and carefully drops them into the oil gurgling on the stovetop — at least a half a bottle in there; it’s Chanukah, after all! The air explodes as potato meets oil, and the crackling is the most welcome sound. We hover above — as close as our mother allows — to watch the edges slowly, way too slowly, take on the faintest of color. We gesture and place our bets on the readiest of the batch, while our mother patiently waits for the exteriors to be perfectly golden, the edges crispy, insides soft, and finally, after what seems to us like a year, she gingerly picks up the mesh insert, shakes the golden treasures about, and assesses them for doneness. Out they are finally tossed onto the waiting sheets of paper towel lining the Pyrex dish. She gently pats the fries dry and sprinkles on some salt. The oil saturates the sheets that are there for precisely that purpose, and our mother covers the tempting edibles in their folds to serve at suppertime. And then she turns her back for a second too long — to refill the pot, to peel another few potatoes, to give the mesh another good shake to move the contents around. She blinks and soon finds herself alone in the kitchen with a Pyrex dish empty of anything but oily sheets of paper towel, as we each

sample “just a few fries” out of sight, oblivious to the cumulative dent we made in the dish. We’re back soon, grease around our lips as we nonchalantly saunter in to check on the progress of batch number two. My mother mock-sighs and reminds us to leave room for soup, and chicken, and vegetables. Potatoes are not all that healthy, and fried oil on the no-good list. But as she turns to the pantry to fetch another bag of potatoes, we can detect it: the tiniest smile of contentment of a mother who delights in indulging her offspring with too-fatty, too-starchy goodness that is this unmatched Chanukah treat.

Setting Up Making it happen is fun, so let’s begin! • Set up a six-foot folding table about one foot away from a wall that has an accessible outlet. • Cover the table with a washable or disposable tablecloth in a solid color. • Place all ingredients on the first third of the table. Include enough measuring cups, spoons, and a 32-ounce container for each participant. • Place one or two hand blenders near the center of the table. Make sure to have responsible adult supervision behind the table. • Place a stack of smoothie cups and straws near the blenders. • Add chocolate syrup, caramel spritz and a can of whipped cream spray to the table. • Display assorted toppings — such as chocolate chips, sprinkles and chocolate cookie crunchies — at the far end of the table. • 1 cup all-purpose flour
• 1/2 cup Golden Flow Whole Milk
• 4 large eggs, cold
• 8 tablespoons unsalted butter
• 1/2 cup granulated sugar
• 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• vegetable oil to fry churros

CHOCOL ATE SAU CE

3 1/2 ounces dark chocolate, chopped
•
1/2 cup Golden Flow Heavy Cream
1. Combine water, Golden Flow milk, butter, sugar, and salt in a medium saucepan. Bring it to a boil over medium heat, stirring often.
2. Remove the saucepan from the heat and add flour all at once, stirring with a large wooden spoon. Once it's thoroughly mixed, put it back on the heat and continuously stir for another 2 minutes. The dough should come together in a smooth ball.
3. Transfer to a large mixing bowl and use an electric mixer to beat on medium speed for 2 minutes to cool the mixture slightly. Add 4 eggs, adding 1 at a time and allowing each egg to fully incorporate between additions. Beat until dough is smooth and forms a thick ribbon when pulled up.
4. Heat 2” deep vegetable oil to 370˚F. Keep the oil between 350-370˚F while frying.
5. Transfer dough to a pastry bag fitted with a large open star tip. Pipe 6”
lengths into hot oil and cut with scissors. Fry 1 1/2 minutes per side or until golden brown, then flip with tongs and fry another 1 1/2 minutes. Fry in batches, about 5-6 churros at a time. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate, then roll in cinnamon sugar.
CHOCOL ATE SAUCE INSTRUCTI ONS:
1. Place the chopped chocolate in a small bowl. 2. Warm the Golden Flow Heavy Cream in a small saucepan (Do not let it boil.) Pour the heavy cream over the chopped chocolate. Let it sit for 1 minute, then stir to combine.

WORKING WHILE THE NEIROS ARE BURNING The minhag is for women to refrain from working for the first half-hour that the neiros are burning.[1] One reason is that it should be a reminder that they are not allowed to use the light for other purposes.[2] Another reason is that they shouldn’t have hesech hadaas from the neis.[3] Though in some places men also refrain from work,[4] according to many opinions, this minhag was only taken on by women because the neis happened through a woman. Yehudis, the daughter of Yochanan the Kohen Gadol, was taken captive. She fed the leader of the enemy dairy, which made him thirsty. This caused him to drink a lot and become drunk; when he dozed off, she beheaded him, and the rest of the enemy camp fled.[5] According to most poskim, the type of melacha that women refrain from is the same as the type of melacha we refrain from performing on chol hamoed. So women can cook and bake, but shouldn’t wash clothing, sew, etc. Also, tasks that require a lot of physical exertion, like washing the floor, should be avoided.[6] In some places, though, women are noheg not to do any melacha at all — even cooking and baking — because it may cause hesech hadaas from the neis.[7] MOVING THE LIGHTS One should not move the lights after they are lit for the duration of a half-hour because then it will look like it was lit for one’s own use and not for the mitzvah.[8] According to some opinions, this halacha applies even after the first halfhour.[9] Therefore, one should make sure to place the lights in a safe place and away from kids at the time of lighting so that one wouldn’t have to move it later. In a case where one didn’t do so and there is a real need to move it, for example to keep it away from children or because of chashash of fire, chas v’shalom, one may move it.[10] SITTING BY THE LIGHTS AFTER LIGHTING Even though there is no obligation to sit by the lights after the lighting, nevertheless, many have the minhag to sit by the lights for a half-hour. The Yesod V’shoresh Ha’avodah says that at this time, one should sing songs of praise (such as Maoz Tzur) to Hashem and speak about the nissim that happened, especially to one’s children.[11] The Imrei Pinchas learns that there is an idea to look at the lights from both the nusach of Haneiros Hallalu (where we say that we are not allowed to use them but only look at them) and also from the fact that the halacha requires one who does not light, but only sees the lights, to make a bracha on them.[12] The deeper reason behind this is as follows: It is brought that the ohr haganuz, through which Adam Harishon saw from one end of the world to the other, and which Hashem concealed for the tzaddikim for the future, is revealed in the Chanukah lights. This is one reason that we light 36 lights during Chanukah — to correspond to the 36 hours that the ohr haganuz was around before it was hidden away.[13] Therefore, some have the minhag to look at the lights after light-

RECITING AL HANISSIM On all eight days of Chanukah, Al Hanissim is recited in birchas haaretz in Birchas Hamazon and after Modim in Shemoneh Esrei. [15] It is not said in Al Hamichyah because its recitation is only a minhag, which was only taken on with regard to Birchas Hamazon.[16] One who forgets to say Al Hanissim in Birchas Hamazon should only go back and say it if he realized before saying Hashem’s name at the end of the bracha — but if he remembered after saying Hashem’s name, he should not go back. In such a case, when one reaches Harachaman, it is good to say “Harachaman Hu yaaseh lanu nissim v’niflaos keshem she’asisah laavoseinu bayamim haheim bazman hazeh… Bimei Matisyahu... ” and continue with the rest of Al Hanissim from there.[17] On Rosh Chodesh, one should say this only after the Harachaman of Rosh Chodesh, because Rosh Chodesh is a more common occurrence.[18] One who forgot to say Al Hanissim in Shemoneh Esrei should go back and say it if he still hasn’t said Hashem’s name in the bracha of hatov shimcha; if he has already said Hashem’s name, he should not go back. In this case, one may add it at the end of Shemoneh Esrei after Elokai Netzor but before Yihyu L’ratazon.[19] If one forgot it then, too, he can say it after Yihyu L’ratzon but before taking three steps backward.[20] If he forgot to say it even after taking three steps back, he should not go back to say it.

WHEN THE PENNY DROPS…
Pennies are not made of pure copper, they cost the government nearly 2 cents apiece to make, and they’re not even called pennies. With 1.82 cents being the production price of one penny, the fight is on to scrap them from circulation — so here’s to enjoying them while they last (or maybe hoarding them for when they become a collector’s item)! But Americans for Common Cents is lobbying hard to keep these shiny coins in circulation. Phew!
THE U.S. CENT PENNIES IN TIME The first pennies were produced in the year 790, their name morphing into variations like “penning” and “pfennig” as they made their way around Europe. Any kind of coin or money, and not just those of small denominations, was stuck with the name penny — which may have inspired the idiom of things costing “a pretty penny.” As for the official term penny, Great Britain carries the privilege of having their smallest denomination called that. While the smallest form of U.S. currency was indeed inspired by the Brits, it is called a cent. This coin is quite a hardy little thing, with an average lifespan of 25 years. Compared to the 18 months of the average dollar, our pennies are modern-day Mesushelachs.

In 1787, the Fugio cent was the first coin minted in the United States. And it didn’t look anything like the Lincolns clanging around in your bag. In fact, the footer on those coins, designed by Founding Father and influential businessman Benjamin Franklin, read “Mind Your Business”! LINCOLN PENNIES ABRAHAM LINCOLN IS ENJOYING A LONG LIFE ON OUR PENNIES. FROM THE ELEVEN DESIGNS STRUCK SINCE THE CENT WAS FIRST MINTED, LINCOLN’S IMAGE HAS BEEN AROUND LONGEST. HE WAS THE FIRST HISTORICAL FIGURE ON A U.S. COIN, AND HIS PENNY WAS THE FIRST TO INCLUDE THE WORDS “IN G-D WE TRUST.” THIS PRESIDENT’S IMAGE ALSO SHATTERS THE MYTH THAT FLIPPING A COIN HAS A 50-50 CHANCE OF LANDING HEADS OR TAILS. THE CHANCES OF A FLIPPED LINCOLN PENNY LANDING TAILS UP IS 80%, BECAUSE THE SIDE WITH LINCOLN’S HEAD IS SLIGHTLY HEAVIER THAN THE FLIP SIDE.

ERROR PENNIES
Talk about a limited edition! I’d call error pennies minted magic for the tidy sums these coveted one-centers fetch on the collectors’ market. Double-die errors make the images on the struck coins appear doubled. The more obvious the doubling, the more valuable the coin, so check your penny jar. Some double-dies can set a collector back $10,000! This is small change next to the very rare 1943 bronze cents, made from bronze planchets being added to the coining press by mistake. Only a few dozen coins were struck, and they’re valued between $100,000 and $200,000. Yes, apiece! PENNY LEGENDS COPPER IN COINS 1982 was the year of the copper stopper. The value of the copper in the coin rose above one cent, so the current pennies are composed of copper-plated zinc. No worries, though; this combo can be quite useful! Bury a ring of them in your garden to repel slugs, which get an electric shock from the copper-zinc cocktail.
Mike Hayes was a smart boy. He also may have been the first crowd-funder out there when, in 1987, he raised $28,000 in pennies to pay for college. After contacting a newspaper columnist of the Chicago Tribune and asking him to publish his request for pennies, this student got his tuition covered, the nickname “Penny Man,” and 90,000 letters to read. Ever wondered why they’re called penny loafers? The Norwegian loafer, which was in vogue in the 1930s, was loved by school students for its saddle slot, which they used to store a penny for pay phone calls. The rest is history.
PENNY HACKS Keep your flowers peppy with a pre-1982 copper penny and a sugar cube. Drop both in the water, and enjoy your blooms longer! Add stability to rickety furniture by adding as many coins as necessary to the bottom of the offending short leg with hot glue. Short of a ruler? Line up 16 pennies to measure one foot. And for your aspiring tap dancer, glue some pennies to the soles of old shoes and turn up the music. This is a great Chanukah activity!
PENNY PROVERBS These pithy phrases seem much like the men who coined them. Take this from old-time gangster Al Capone: “Be careful who you call your friends. I’d rather have four quarters than one hundred pennies.” On the right side of the law, Benjamin Franklin is alleged to have affirmed that “A penny saved is a penny got,” and to have cautioned, “Watch the pennies and the dollars will take care of themselves.” Happy collecting!
