(Re: The Great Conjunction, Issue 64) Thank you for your beautiful publication. I marvel at the rich content you manage to produce weekly. I especially look forward to the informative articles written by Y. Blooming. I was wondering if he could elaborate on what he wrote as to “why this happens can be understood intuitively utilizing some grade school math and finding a common denominator. In each 60-year period, Jupiter completes five orbits and Saturn just two. This means that three times in 60 years Jupiter must pass Saturn…” Which formula was used to get this number? Why can’t this phenomenon occur more than three times in 60 years? An Interested Reader Y. BLOOMING RESPONDS: Thank you for taking the time to write. Let me try to further elaborate: Since Saturn completes only two orbits every 60 years in the time that Jupiter completes five, this means that Jupiter completes three more orbits than Saturn over that period. Each of these three additional orbits requires Jupiter speeding by and overtaking Saturn at some point. That point is a great conjunction. If you want a more math-based breakdown, here’s another way to The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. Please email comments@thebpview.com.

look at it: An orbit is 360 degrees. Saturn does a 30th of an orbit each year, which is 12 degrees. Jupiter does a 12th of an orbit each year, which is 30 degrees. The latter is 18 degrees more than the former, which means that Jupiter jumps ahead by 18 degrees annually. After twenty years, all these 18 degree advantages accumulate to a complete 360-degree circle (18x20=360), at which point they cross paths again.

HOPING FOR ROUND TWO (Re: Students at the Stove, Issue 63) I love your program encouraging teens to cook for Shabbos. Kol hakavod! Do you know what I would have loved to see included in your cooking list for the girls? Compote! It’s a time-consuming job and fairly simple, making it a very suitable one for girls who are willing to help out. Perhaps you can consider it for round two, which I hope you will actually do! I’d like to add that the kugel recipe looks delicious, and I also want to share that a friend taught me to grate a very small zucchini along with the potatoes for the kugel. It adds a delicious taste and smoothness to the batter. D.L.

SAFETY AND SUPERVISION (Re: Entering With Awe, Issue 62) I was impressed with how Rabbi Elias tackled the issue of taking young children to shul. He addressed it in a delicate manner and yet gave us all food for thought. I want to add another factor to consider before sending too-young boys to shul with their fathers. When I passed a shul in the brutal cold one recent Shabbos, I was so surprised to see several young boys outside, without coats, spending their time in the cold. It made me wonder whether their fathers knew their whereabouts at all, and it made me fear what else these boys could be up to without their fathers’ knowledge. If you decide that shul is the right place for your son, please make sure he’s safe and under the watchful eye of an adult. A Concerned Passerby

WEEK 14:

FREEDOM OF SPEECH The uniquely rarefied atmosphere of the beis knesses creates a great many halachic implications, many of which we have touched upon previously. Ultimately, though, what truly defines whether our beis knesses will realize its potential and be a truly fitting home for our relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu is our personal day-to-day conduct within these hallowed walls. If this is not just a standard room, then it’s not a place for standard behavior. This room is specifically dedicated as a VIP meeting room and should be used only as such. Thus, we have strict limitations on anything that might distract or detract from the distinguished atmosphere of the room. These include restrictions on eating, sleeping and even conversation. Let’s begin with the topic of speech. Looking at the Shulchan Aruch, the matter seems rather straightforward. Strictly speaking, any and all speech is forbidden, except that of tefillah or Torah nature. And yet this seems quite far from the reality in our shuls. Exchanges ranging from casual pleasantries to heated political debates abound. Is there justification for any of this? Before diving into the details of which forms of speech are or are not permitted, let’s back up a step. It is true that the laws pertaining to a beis knesses are rather clear, but one critical piece of information completely alters the equation. Chazal tell us, “Batei knessiyos sheb’Bavel al tenai hein asuyos

— Shuls outside of Eretz Yisroel can be built ‘conditionally,’” and this creates certain allowances. To be clear, the use of the word “conditionally” is a bit of a misnomer. Strictly speaking, a condition does not change the nature of a deal; it merely determines whether the deal will take effect. For example, were I to sell a car on condition that I receive payment in full within 30 days, the condition does not alter the fundamentals of ownership. Either the condition is fulfilled and the sale is a sale, or the condition is not met and there is no sale. It’s an all-or-nothing proposition; there is no half-ownership. With a shul, however, the intent is not to establish a conditional kedusha, but rather to establish an entirely new concept: that the kedusha of a beis knesses is somewhat amorphous and can be created in a limited form. Rather than imbuing a shul with fullfledged kedusha, those establishing the shul can decide at the time of its inception to opt for a more limited, potentially less restrictive, level of kedusha while at the same time maintaining a sufficient degree of kedusha to call it a proper beis knesses. While all are in agreement about the fundamental concept of tenai, there is disagreement as to the extent of its impact. The Mishnah Berurah rules in accordance with the opinion that this does allow for lessening of restrictions, but only when and to the degree necessary, and when there is no readily available alternative. It is important to note that the halacha restricting speech overlaps with a halacha prohibiting kalus rosh — lightheadedness. The concept of kalus rosh is not necessarily indicative of anything inherently inappropriate. Rather, the issue is a lack of koved rosh — a seriousness that comes with the awareness of where you stand. Anything that detracts from that awareness is forbidden. A good illustration would be a business meeting. It’s not lashon hara. It’s not talking during davening. But it’s a conversation that draws one away from focusing on the kedusha of where one stands. This is forbidden according to all opinions, as even the utilization of a tenai does nothing to mitigate the issue of kalus rosh.

Let’s get to some details: A conversation discussing Torah with a friend: Obviously,

this is not only permitted in a beis knesses but strongly encouraged. Torah and tefillah are what it’s all about. Essential Speech: Giving someone an important message? (He’s about to get a parking ticket. His son is waiting outside for him.) This involves any time-sensitive message or information. As standard practice in our shuls is to employ a tenai as described above, essential needs are permitted when speaking outside the shul is not a readily available alternative. This does not, however, allow any kalus rosh discussions, as categorized below.[1] This category is broadened by the poskim to include some level of nonessential talk while involved in learning. Since requiring a person to step outside would incur significant distraction from learning, allowing speech in this regard could as well be deemed essential.[2] Again, this would not permit any kalus rosh. Non-essential but productive speech: The Mishnah Berurah

rules that this category is forbidden, though there are those who find some level of tolerance for this category.[3] “Good morning,” “How are you?” and other basic greetings: This category is not viewed as problematic.[4] Political commentary and analysis: This is completely prohibited, both as a nonessential matter of speech, as well as a serious infraction of kalus rosh.[5]

IN SUMMATION: 1. A shul is a sensitive environment and is a place for Torah, tefillah and mitzvah-related talk only. 2. Using a precondition, talk is allowed when it’s a conversation of necessity, and it is impractical to relocate. Kalus rosh — discussing topics such as politics, business and sports — is forbidden under all circumstances.

Business meetings, job interviews, or discussion of the stock market:

These are forbidden under the prohibition of kalus rosh. There’s nothing wrong with such a meeting, but it’s a distraction, reducing the focus on the sanctity of the shul. Discussing tzedakah matters: Be it allocation of Tomchei Shabbos funds or a board meeting to discuss the upcoming shul expansion, mitzvah needs may be discussed in shul. Discussing people or general local affairs: Aside from being nonessen-

tial, conversations involving lashon hara, machlokes or any other forbidden speech are worse than normal when in shul. It’s terrible enough to be ignoring Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s commandments; worse still is to do so while standing right before Him. Such conversations are violations of numerous serious issurim d’Oraisa, and as numerous seforim state, they can cause tremendous damage to the entire shul. To be clear, all the above is said when one is within a beis knesses but not engaged in tefillah. During tefillah, a great many additional halachic issues are involved. Turning back to the realities we face, it is clear that although much of our speech is in fact permissible, unfortunately, we often seem to stretch this well past where we should. Suffice it to say that conversations often devolve into those of the very worst nature. What can be done? The first step in dealing with this is certainly to have a cognizance of the issue and a clear knowledge of the basic halacha. Beyond that, it would be helpful to focus on the underlying rationale behind the halacha: that of kavod Shamayim. Understandably, this can be a tall order. How can we picture what it means to stand in awe, where we’re totally attentive to every action we do or word we utter? The course of history has denied us any real appreciation of true monarchies. Parables of kings and princesses have long been relegated to

See us in the classifieds weekly

50 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 23, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

dusty shelves. But we can, and ought to, find some way to develop an appreciation for this concept. Have you ever been to court, even for a traffic violation? How do you act in front of a judge? Picture yourself for a moment in a private one-on-one conversation with Harav Chaim Kanievsky, shlit”a. What would you say? What wouldn’t you say? Kavod for Hakadosh Baruch Hu far outweighs that of the greatest gedolim, but this depiction can make it more tangible, driving home the idea that restrictions on speech are not a matter of stifling regulations, but rather a way to for us to act with a true appreciation of proper kavod. A final thought: The Mishnah Berurah details how a person initiating a problematic conversation will pay a heavy price. It might be a two-minute conversation, but it gets the ball rolling. The person you spoke to turns around to the next guy, and things get heated. Little by little, the entire shul atmosphere is affected, and it’s impossible to turn back the clock. You need to look yourself in the eye and realize that each action you do matters. You’re only one in a crowd, but the crowd notices. Nobody wants to be different from everyone else. You have the power, even if it’s to raise or lower the level of tolerance in shul by just a small amount. Stand with your ideals, treat a beis knesses properly, and you’ll reap the rewards of the people around you who will also be just a little more respectful. Rabbi Elias is a maggid shiur at the Yeshiva Gedola of Hampstead in Montreal, Canada. Rabbi Elias’ daily halacha/parsha shiur, given at the Agudah of Montreal, is available at www.TorahDownloads.com. For questions or comments, you can write to collectedaudio@gmail.com.

The Aruch Hashulchan wonders how completely mundane talk has become so widespread in shuls. He suggests that perhaps people are employing an extremely wide definition of shaas hadchak — necessary talk. While he does not endorse this, he does imply that there would be some grounds for leniency when something can be defined loosely as a necessity.

Illinois Legislator Hired as New Chevra Hatzalah CEO A nationwide search for the right candidate to lead Chevra Hatzalah has come to an end, with Illinois lawmaker Rabbi Yehiel Kalish hired to head the volunteer corps serving an area that includes New York City, Nassau County and portions of upstate New York. In a statement released to the public, Hatzalah said that it had been looking for someone with leadership skills and a passion for helping others. Rabbi Kalish brings with him twelve years of experience as vice president for development and state regulations at Agudath Israel of America, and he has also served as CEO of the S4 Consulting firm and has been a member of the Illinois General Assembly for the past two years. “Yehiel’s energy and enthusiasm are contagious,” said Hatzalah executive board member Mr. Zelig Gitelis. “With his highly professional background and experience, he is uniquely qualified to maximize and build upon the tremendous accomplishments of the organization.” With more than 1,600 EMTs, paramedics and doctors, and nearly 100 ambulances, Hatzalah describes itself as the largest volunteer ambulance corps in the United States.

Devastating Fire Destroys Felder Shul A longtime fixture on the Boro Park landscape was decimated by fire after a massive blaze broke out on the morning of December 16 at the Felder shul on the corner of 49th Street and 18th Avenue. ABC News reported that the fire broke out at Bais Medrash Bais Aharon just before 8 a.m. Firefighters and Hatzalah responded quickly, safely evacuating the 100-year-old mother of Senator Simcha Felder and a family in an upstairs apartment. Video of the fire showed flames shooting out broken windows and heavy smoke pouring out of the building. Multiple sifrei Torah were removed from the upstairs apartment, which was home to a sofer. Also rescued were the shul’s sifrei Torah, which sustained some water damage, with Chaveirim called to the scene once the blaze had been extinguished to open the safe, whose locking mechanism had melted from the heat. Senator Simcha Felder expressed his gratitude to those who responded to the scene, saying, “I appreciate the outpouring of care and concern from so many wonderful people. There is much to be thankful for, but most importantly, thank G-d everyone is safe and doing well. That is due in large part

to many special people, including NYC’s remarkable first response team, many local organizations and neighbors, who were all at the scene doing what they always do best. I want to acknowledge my deep appreciation to them and to everyone who sent good wishes and prayers. Thank you all.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio offered his support on social media to both Felder and the Boro Park community, saying that the city will be there for them as the shul is rebuilt. “It’s devastating to see Congregation Beth Aaron in flames — and yet, what a miracle that the Torah scrolls weren’t damaged and thank G-d no one was hurt,” wrote de Blasio.

l Al Acts Swiftly to Rectify Halachic E Issue Affecting Kohanim Less than one day after word broke that the Karlsburger Rav, Rav Yechezkel Roth, retracted a heter he had given allowing kohanim to travel on El Al flights taking niftarim for kevurah, a high-ranking airline official took corrective action to remedy the situation. Yeshiva World News reported that Rabbi Roth made the announcement on December 16 after being informed by reliable sources that El Al was no longer placing aronos into outer boxes before placing them on the airplane, a long-standing practice employed on flights out of JFK that prevented possible issues of tumah for kohanim. Just hours later, a high-ranking El Al official reached out to Rabbi Yanky Meyer, founder and director of Misaskim, to understand why Rabbi Roth had rescinded his heter and was surprised to hear that the outer boxes used to create an ohel weren’t being used. After investigating the matter, the El Al official discov-

ered that the airline had run out of the boxes and assured Meyer that a new shipment of boxes would be in place within 24 hours, with a second delivery arriving a few days later. El Al also agreed to store an emergency supply of the boxes in Misaskim’s Boro Park warehouse to prevent a recurrence of the problem, prompting Rabbi Roth to reinstate his heter and allow kohanim back on El Al flights. El Al’s vice president for North and Central America, Yoram Elgrabli, met with Rabbi Yechezkel Roth, Rav Moshe Stern, Rav Herschel Ausch and Rav Moshe Roth on Monday to further clarify all of the applicable halachic issues. The airline will be making it an official policy to place all aronos in an outer box before being loaded onto the plane, with steps taken to prevent the problem at several other major airports as well.

NYPD Investigating After Local Bais Yaakov Defaced With Graffiti The search is on for two men who were captured on surveillance video spraying graffiti on the side of a girl’s high school. Police said that the December 13th incident at Mesilas Bais Yaakov in the Park Slope area is being classified as a hate crime, reported ABC News. The graffiti included a swastika and the words “Ace and Rico.” Elected officials were quick to condemn the vandalism, with Mayor Bill de Blasio saying, “This kind of hatred has no home in our city. To the Mesilas Bais Yaakov community: Your city stands with you. We denounce this vile act of anti-Semitism with one voice.” A statement released by Governor Andrew Cuomo said that the past nine months have demonstrated that New Yorkers are united and will not allow others to divide them. “This bigoted attack — which came as the family of New York celebrated Hanukkah — is simply despicable, and the fact that these vandals targeted an institution focused on educating our children makes their act of hate even more reprehensible,” said Cuomo. One suspect was described as a light-complexioned man who is 5’10” tall and weighing 170 pounds. He was wearing a jacket, blue jeans, black sneakers and a knapsack at the time of the incident. The second suspect, a dark-complexioned man with a full beard who is also 5’10” tall and weighs approximately 250 pounds, was wearing a black face mask and shirt, a button-down jacket, jeans, dark sneakers and a brown messenger bag at the time the incident occurred. Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline by phone at 800-577TIPS, by text at 247637 (CRIMES) and then entering TIP577, or online at www.NYPDCrimeStoppers. com.

Miri’s Story H OW W E B E AT PA N D A S

Miri was sniffling again. “Miri,” Faigy said, “are you cold?” Her seven-year-old shrugged and shook her head. “Not really.” “Okay, but if you are cold, tell Mommy, okay?” And off to the pool they went. Miri kept sniffling but Faigy remained unconcerned. She figured it must be a passing meshugas. Besides, it was summer in the country! There were friends to converse with and laundry to wash and dry and fold and little muddy faces clambering in at the end of a long day, ready for dinner. Hoping the sniffling would stop on its own, Faigy let the matter rest. A few weeks later, Miri began continuously clearing her throat. First, it was sporadic, but soon, the throat-clearing occurred every couple of minutes. Was this another little kid meshugas? Faigy wasn’t sure. Hopefully, she thought, this too, would fade with time.

because her friend’s son had recently undergone treatment for the disease. But his symptoms had been entirely different, with symptoms like OCD, eye tics and restlessness. PANDAS occurs when the child's immune system produces antibodies to attack strep bacteria and it also fights the regular bacteria. Some of these antibodies head to the brain, causing OCD, tics, and other neuropsychiatric symptoms.

“This doesn’t seem right,” the doctor said. “I’m ordering a blood test to see what’s going on.”

A few weeks passed. The long summer evenings were giving way for cooler weathers. Faigy took her son to the pediatrician for a routine checkup and Miri, bored, tagged along. Hearing Miri sniffling and clearing her throat, the doctor frowned. “This doesn’t seem right,” the doctor said. “I’m ordering a blood test to see what’s going on.” The results came back two weeks later. Miri’s strep antibody levels were high; she had PANDAS. Faigy was surprised by the diagnosis. She was familiar with PANDAS

The pediatrician prescribed antibiotics for a month. While Miri’s sniffling and throat clearing became better, they did not fully disappear. And come thirty days later, with the medication prescription done, the symptoms all came back as if they’d never gone in the first place. Antibiotics aren’t the answer, Faigy realized. She called the Imbue Massage Therapy Center and scheduled an appointment. Imbue had helped her friend’s son with PANDAS. Surely, they could help Miri.

Our trained practitioners began treating Miri twice a week with the Raindrop Technique. The Raindrop Technique is the method we use at Imbue to ease physical, mental and emotional ailments. We apply a treatment of aromatherapy, massage techniques and essential oils to the skin, infusing the body with natural derivatives that possess incredible healing qualities. The results were seen almost immediately. And after 2-3 weeks of treatments, Miri was symptom-free. We continued treatment for another few weeks to entirely rid her body from PANDAS.

What is Imbue? Imbue is a center where we combine aromatherapy, massage techniques and essential oils to ease physical, mental and emotional ailments.

First, it was sporadic, but soon, the throat-clearing occurred every couple of minutes. Was this another little kid meshugas?

What are aromatherapy and essential oils? Aromatherapy is a treatment where we apply essential oils to your skin. Essential oils are natural derivatives from flowers, herbs and trees that are infused with incredible healing qualities.

How does the treatment work? We run a test to find out which essential oils will work best for your body. Then, our trained practitioner uses a combo of aromatherapy and massage therapy to gently apply the treatments to your skin.

How often can I receive essential oil treatment? You can receive treatment twice a week, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or seasonally. We listen to your body’s needs to determine the direction of the treatment.

Which essential oils do you use? The standard Raindrop Technique used by many practitioners consists of a basic combination of essential oils. At Imbue, we create a customized essential oil blend.

Can my family member perform the treatment for me or can I perform the treatment for my child? Throughout treatment, Faigy suddenly realized that a few other issues that Miri had developed were gone. Before PANDAS, the seven-year-old would punch in the number lock at the front four to let herself into the house after school. During PANDAS, she couldn’t concentrate long enough to remember the 5-number code. After our treatment, she was able to open the lock on her own again. Faigy also noticed that her daughter was calmer throughout the day. Treatment progressed well for six weeks. Then one day, Faigy called our office, agitated. “The symptoms seem to be coming back. What’s going on?” It’s normal, we reassured her. Miri is still fighting the disease. She must have been exposed to strep, causing her sensitive immune system to respond with PANDAS symptoms. Sure enough, two days later, Miri and her two brothers tested positive for strep. After being treated with antibiotics, and continuing our treatments, Miri’s symptoms were gone. Because of this flare-up, we continued to treat her twice a week to help her body overcome the disease. After eight weeks of aromatherapy treatment, we told Faigy that we could cut the treatments to once in two weeks and then slowly wean Miri off the treatment entirely.

Our practitioners are extensively trained and certified to perform the Raindrop Technique. Our comprehensive knowledge and experience with customizing the specific oils give us the utmost confidence that not just anyone can provide our services.

After how many treatments can I expect to see a difference? It’s impossible to predict, as the results depend on multiple factors, such as symptoms, severity, frequency, etc. The majority of our clients have seen improvements within the first month.

What are some conditions of previous clients? We have successfully helped clients with PANDAS, Lyme disease, migraines, back pain, anxiety, colitis, acid reflux and many more.

Other than the Raindrop Technique, what other services does Imbue offer? We will soon be offering a full array of therapeutic massages at our upscale facility, including Swedish, deep tissue, prenatal, medical, hot stone, and more.

Baruch Hashem, another Imbue success story.

The Raindrop Technique has helped many. If you or anyone you know is suffering and in pain, give Imbue a call at 718.666.3963 or email us at info@imbueny.com. We'll help guide you to a complete recovery.

In Eretz Yisroel in 1949, Gershon Ludmir wonders what happened to his brother Ernie and Ernie’s family from back home in Bratislava. Ernie had sent him a large sum of money right before the war, but then he was never heard from again. To Gershon’s shock, a letter arrives from the Bureau of Missing Relatives with the information that a Yosef Ludmir, from his own family’s street in Bratislava, is alive! “I hardly found anything, Mr. Ludmir.” Leonid had landed back in Sydney after spending eight days searching intensively in Bratislava. Within an hour, he was in Joe’s office. “There’s nothing about Edo, nor about Gustav.” “I figured that was the reason I didn’t receive any updates from you. So, was it hardly anything, or nothing at all?” “The only thing that I found was a list of the children in the institution, where these two names appear. Next to them is the same family name – Heinke.” “Heinke? This means that…” “No, they are probably not brothers. One of the directors there, or perhaps the assistant director — it was hard to figure out what his exact position was only from the lists — was named Theodore Heinke. Apparently, he used his family name for these two children, just for bureaucratic purposes.” “I know they are not brothers.” Joe Ludmir leaned his chin on his palm. Brothers… If only he would have had a real brother; everything would have been very different. Elisha was like a brother to him, true. He had been the first to emigrate to far-off Australia, and from there, in a gen-

uinely brotherly fashion, he had invited Joe to follow. Until then, earning a living had been so difficult. Here, he had become Elisha’s partner in the first shoe store. Afterward Elisha had left Sydney and sold him the store with its inventory, and he had remained in the city together with his wife, Martha. This was where his success had burgeoned. But perhaps Sydney had not been the beginning of his success. Perhaps success had begun to break through on that longago day, so many years earlier. The day when, without any warning, he had gone from being a lone child to a member of a loving family. “There were no birthdates recorded, only the year when they arrived and their approximate ages. The boy named Gustav came two years before Edo, and he was then about three. Edo came a year before the war ended, and he was about two and a half, at least according to the estimate of the directors.” “I know all that already. And you didn’t find any information beyond that?” “No. It seems that, indeed, no one knew anything about them.” “I see.” Joe was quiet as he gazed out the

large window to his right. Why had he gotten his hopes up? “Look,” he said, after a long moment. “I have to tell you that you’re not the first person I’ve asked to search for details on this subject.” “I’m not the first?” “No, you’re actually the fourth.” “Really?” Leonid digested this information for a few seconds. “When was the first time you sent someone?” “Sometime after the Soviet Union collapsed.” Joe stood up and paced back and forth in the office. “I once traveled there myself, to nose around a bit, to remember… but I didn’t find anything. Over the years I’ve asked two private investigator firms to do a search, and when they didn’t find anything conclusive, I decided to try again myself. I had to return home earlier than planned, because my business partner passed away. But a short visit to the archives was enough for me to realize how much work is involved in searching for this information, and to see that I’m not exactly cut out for this kind of detective work.” “And then you contacted me?” “Yes, after you did such good work for me this past year, I thought that perhaps you have the tools to uncover information.” “To uncover what is there,” the investigator said gently. “Not what isn’t there. But look, Mr. Ludmir,” he added hastily, “if we’re talking about the work that I did for you this past year, I should let you know that I received some in-

formation last night that might interest you very much.” “Information?” Ludmir nodded at the worker who carried in a tray with two steaming cups of coffee and a small silver bowl of sugar. “Thank you. So, what’s the story, Leonid? And please, have a drink.” “Yes.” Leonid drew one of the cups closer to himself and sprinkled in three spoonfuls of sugar, which promptly sank to the bottom of the cup. He took a small sip and said, “I have a friend in London. We often work together. He sent me a message this morning that someone had asked him about Alexander Korman… and about his mental state before his passing.” “Really.” Joe approached the desk, grasping the back of his chair with tremulous fingers. “What did you tell him?” “That if he gives me information about the people who are asking, I’ll consider answering him and shortening his path to the information.” He looked at his unofficial employer. “You know that it’s probably not very hard to nose around a bit and find out that Mr. Korman was not capable of transferring a donation to anyone these past few years. So I thought it was worth finding out who was asking these questions.” “Obviously. And was that the person’s only question, about Alex’s level of lucidity?” “No. If that was all he was interested in, I would not have necessarily linked

it to you. But he also asked,” Leonid took another sip from his cup and then pushed it away, “if the names of Alex’s parents were Peretz and Tziporah Genendel.” Joe knitted his eyebrows and sat down. His voice was cold when he asked, “And did you promise to answer him about that, too?” “No. It came in a separate message, a few seconds after the first one. I’m not a fool, sir.” Leonid was mildly offended. “Of course not, of course not,” Joe agreed. He wrapped all ten fingers around his cup. “And, did he respond about the questioner?” “Yes. The woman asking is a Mrs. Bluma Hartstein, of London. Stamford Hill. Her husband is a very successful businessman; you may have heard of him. Gideon Hartstein.” “I haven’t. So you confirmed to them that Alex was not at his best.” “Yes. But I did not detail the extent of ‘not at his best.’” “So I’m giving you a new job.” Joe Ludmir tapped silently on the desk. “To find out what the Hartstein family has to do with the Potolsky family.” “If there is a connection.” “Of course there is.” He looked at Leonid through slitted eyes. “Right,” the man had to admit. “As always, you’re right, sir.” Magdiel, Eretz Yisroel, 1949 Miriam, the Ludmirs’ neighbor, had agreed to take Elisha home from nursery school on Wednesday afternoon,

and Berta Greenberg had agreed to give Batya a day off from work at the sewing shop, so Batya and Gershon set out early in the morning. Gershon was quiet as the bus took them closer and closer to their destination. Batya tried to offer him water, an apple, a cookie, but he just shook his head in refusal and kept his mouth closed in a firm line. “But don’t be disappointed if it’s not him,” Batya said worriedly, when the bus began to laboriously climb the winding road to Yerushalayim. “If it’s not whom?” “I don’t know. Ernie’s son.” “He had a daughter, not a son.” His voice was hollow. “But maybe he had a son during the war, after ties were cut off.” “Yes,” she said carefully, knowing what would be coming next. Her husband would raise all the possibilities, and then would grasp onto the identical street name, and would say that it was clear to him like the light of day that it was his relative, and then a moment later he would wonder in anguish if perhaps it was not. The director of the orphanage greeted them in a small office, which had a large window that let in the bright rays of sunshine. “Ludmir?” He gazed at them for a moment. “Yosef Ludmir? I don’t know if he’s here.” “What does that mean?” This was not a response Gershon had even considered. “The boy is not in a state where we can ask him any questions.” “The boy? So he is here?” “We have a child here named Gustav,” the director clarified. “A boy from Czechoslovakia who arrived with minimal personal information.” “What do you mean, ‘minimal personal information?’” Gershon groped for the arm of the wooden chair he was sitting on. “The boy was placed in a Chris-

tian children’s institution at the age of three, and there is no information about his past.” “And where in Czechoslovakia is he from? Bratislava?” “The institution was there. We do not know where he was born.” “So what do you know? Where is Yosef Ludmir?” Gershon leaned forward, his lips parched. “The boy is now sick with a serious infection. He contracted pneumonia two months ago and was hospitalized. He recovered partially at first, but he hasn’t been getting better since. Every few days it’s something else. Three days ago, we sent him back to the hospital.” He paused for a moment. “When his fever was raging, he muttered a lot, and we didn’t understand what he was saying. The only words we did make out were ‘Yosef Ludmir’ and ‘Peterzelka Street, Bratislava.’” “If so, why isn’t it certain that it

“It’s possible,” the director said slowly. “Why, what is Yosef Ludmir to you, Mr. Ludmir?” “That’s it — I’m not sure exactly.” Gershon gazed at the rays of the sun that were dancing on the desk. “He might be my younger brother’s son.” The director looked at him. “I don’t know what to tell you,” he murmured, “other than to wait, pray and hope that the child will get well soon and will be able to answer our questions. There’s not much else we can do right now.” Gershon leaned forward. “Which hospital is he in?” “Bikur Cholim.” The Ludmirs rose. “Thank you.” * * * * * The boy’s eyes were covered with a moist film that made them look dull; still, it was evident that they were very gray. “I think those are Ernie’s eyes. Exactly Ernie’s eyes. Oy, Hashem…” Gershon bent over him and burst into tears. The film grew cloudier, and the boy’s eyes closed. “Oh, no, no.” Gershon took a deep breath and put a hand on the boy’s thin shoulder. “Yosef?” he asked in a shaky voice. “Yosef Ludmir?” The eyes opened and then closed again right away. “Yosef Ludmir…” the boy murmured. “Ludmir from Peterzelka 10… There… there are uncles in Eretz Yisroel.” “We are the uncles,” Gershon almost choked, and Batya saw that he was forcing back the sobs. “It’s us, child, it is us!” “Your brother had gray eyes?” Batya asked. She threw a glance at the nurse who was standing silently on the side, looking on with disapproval at the display of emotion. “No, they were brown, like mine. But that doesn’t mean anything. And the shape… I think the shape is exactly the same.”

“He recovered partially at first, but he hasn’t been getting better since. Every few days it’s something else.”

is him?” Bayta interjected, seeing her husband’s face whiten. “Because he came to us as an anonymous child, and he received his name in the gentile institution during the war.” The director explained what he felt was selfunderstood. “If he knew his real name the entire time, then why didn’t he tell anyone what it was?” “Isn’t it possible that while he was delirious, forgotten details may have surfaced in his memory?” Gershon swallowed. “How old is he?” “About eight, nine, ten…” Gershon calculated quietly. “So it’s possible,” he said with bated breath, “that he was born a year, two, or three after the war broke out?” “And you didn’t know about it,” Batya completed quietly.

Congress Agrees to $900 Billion COVID-19 Relief Bill THE PULSE: Leaders in the House and Senate agreed to a $900 billion COVID-19 relief bill. The bill includes aid for small businesses in the form of forgivable paycheck protection loans, assistance for schools and colleges to help them reopen safely, funding for vaccine distribution, and $600 stimulus checks for American adults and children. The original bill had omitted direct stimulus payments for American families, but an unusual political alliance between conservative Republican Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT) successfully pushed for their inclusion. Hawley and Sanders had advocated for a larger $1,200 payment per adult but settled

68 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 23, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

on a compromise that would be palatable for other Senate members. President-elect Joe Biden left open the possibility for further stimulus checks in 2021 should the economic situation warrant it. THE IMPACT: The bill is a win for bipartisanship. The

congressional bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus was a driving force behind the legislation. Members of the caucus and like-minded senators helped push party leaders to reach a consensus on funding. Congressmen Tom Reed and Josh Gottheimer took the lead in the House, and Senators Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and Joe Manchin (D-WV) took leading roles in the Senate. Manchin said, “Bipartisanship and compromise are alive and well in Washington, contrary to what you’ve been hearing. We’ve proven that.”

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan Named No Labels National Co-Chair THE PULSE: Maryland Republican Governor Larry

Hogan was named national co-chair of the bipartisan No Labels organization. Hogan joins Democratic Senator and onetime vice presidential candidate Joe Lieberman at the helm of the organization. Hogan said that he is “honored to help lead No Labels at a time when our message of putting aside partisan differences for the common good is needed more than ever.” And that “amid this awful pandemic, the people in my state and across our country are desperate for leaders to work across the aisle and focus on solving the urgent problems we face.” THE IMPACT: No Labels is the grassroots advocacy arm of the congressional Problem Solvers Caucus. The current political climate of slim political majorities in both the House and Senate empowers those seeking to work in a bipartisan fashion. The recent COVID-19 relief bill is a hopeful indicator of future successes. Senator Bill Cassidy said, “Republicans and Democrats, neither of us got everything we wanted. Both of us got much of what we wanted.” At a recent No Labels conference, Senator Joe Lieberman called it a “movement to rescue American government from ideological extremism.” Conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks said, “The best policy is not always the middle; it is taking a left-wing idea and a right-wing idea and combining the two.”

Deb Haaland Nominated for Interior Secretary THE PULSE: New Mexico Congresswoman Deb Haaland was nominated to serve as interior secretary in the upcoming Biden administration. Haaland’s appointment is historic as she will be the first Native American to serve in a cabinet position. The interior department manages over 500 million acres of government land and includes agencies such as the National Parks Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Former Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii once called the Department of the Interior “the most important [cabinet position] because you are the custodian of America’s natural resources and custodian of America’s heritage.” Historically, the Interior Department has had a strained relationship with Native American tribes, and many see this as an attempted reset on an often rocky relationship. Jonathan

Nez, president of the Navajo Nation tribe, called it “a historic and unprecedented day for all Indigenous people.” THE IMPACT: Joe Biden promised that his cabinet

would reflect the diversity of America. The appointment of Haaland helps him fulfill that commitment. However, some Democrats fear that Haaland’s selection will open up a competitive congressional seat to a potential Republican challenge and may unwittingly lead to a loss of a congressional seat and a slimming down of the Democratic congressional majority. Adding to this concern is that Biden has also selected Congresswoman Marcia Fudge (D-OH) and Congressman Cedric Richmond (D-LA) for roles in his administration. Democratic Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said, “I’m certainly concerned by the slimming of the majority. I indicated to the administration very early on that I wanted them to be very careful in terms of the members that they appointed from Congress.”

President Trump Threatens to Veto the National Defense Authorization Act THE PULSE: President Trump threatened to veto the

National Defense Authorization Act, which passed the Senate by a vote of 84-13, and the House by a vote of 33578. Trump is upset that the bill does not remove Section 230 protections for technology companies and that it includes renaming military installations named in honor of Confederate leaders. Section 230 protects technology companies from liability for defamatory comments posted by users of their platforms. According to the law, only platform users can be held liable for their comments. In a statement, Trump said that the bill “must have Section 230 termination, protect our National Monuments and allow for removal of the military from far away, and very unappreciative, lands.” THE IMPACT: The NDAA passed the House and Senate with veto-proof two-thirds majorities. Should the president choose to veto the legislation, he will likely hold off until December 23 to issue the veto, which will make it logistically challenging for Congress to return from their holiday break to override it. It also remains to be seen if Republicans who backed the bill will vote to override a presidential veto. Trump has vetoed eight bills during his presidency. None have been overridden. Trump ally Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) said that he hopes that the president does not veto the legislation.

BEEF AND PA S T R A MI STEW

UNLEASH YOUR CREATIVITY!

A hot bowl of stew on a winter evening is the nicest way to say “welcome home.” Special thanks to C.N. Gluck for her help with this recipe.

INGREDIENTS 2 lb. beef stew 1 lb. naval pastrami, cubed Salt and pepper 1 onion, sliced 1¼ tsp. salt, divided 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 T. tomato paste 4 stalks celery, sliced 5 large carrots or 1 bag (16 oz.) of baby carrots 2 large red potatoes, cubed 3 cups chicken stock (or water) 1 bay leaf DIRECTIONS 1. In a large pan, saute the pastrami cubes until they’re browned. Remove them from the pan. 2. Pat the beef dry, and season it with salt and pepper. 3. Sear the beef in batches until all pieces are browned. Remove it from the pan. 4. Add the onions and ¼ teaspoon salt to the same pan and saute them for five minutes, stirring to scrape up the browned bits from the bottom of the pan. 5. Add garlic and tomato paste, and saute for an additional minute. 6. Transfer the onions, meat and pastrami to the slow cooker, along with the celery, carrots and potatoes. 7. Add the chicken stock to the pan to deglaze it, then pour the stock into the slow cooker. Deglazing is the act of adding liquid to a pan to release the caramelized bits stuck to the bottom, thus adding flavor to the dish.

8. Add the bay leaf and 1 teaspoon salt.

Plucked from ducks and geese who manage to stay warm in frigid temperatures, down has earned its spot at the top of the list of preferred insulators. Let’s take a look at this extraordinary material and how producing down goes down.

rom mountain climbers and cross-country hikers in need of lightweight yet cozy jackets, to everyday folks in search of a warm blanket and a good night’s rest, no material compares to down. Down comes from the feathery insulation of waterfowl like duck and geese, with the former making up about 90% of the world’s down supply, and the latter being of much higher quality. Before discussing down and its almost magical properties, we need to first clarify what down is not: feathers. Feathers and down come from the exterior portions of the same birds, but they act very differently as insulators. Feathers, while warm and lightweight, have a more structured shape, which makes them less airy than the puffy down. Down, on the other hand, is the light and fluffy fiber found beneath the feathers, in direct contact with the body of the goose or duck. It’s typically taken from the underbelly, where it provides critical insulation. These little clusters trap air within them and provide superior insulation that is lighter, warmer, longer-lasting, and more flexible than feathers. Down looks like a ball of cotton candy, with thousands of tiny fibers extending out from the center — a perfect structure to trap heat in a lightweight manner. A clear illustration of this difference and what makes down so remarkably effective and highly sought after, is how the commercial manufacturers in China and elsewhere separate feathers from down. The feathers and down are loaded together into a large, spacious machine, and air jets are turned on to get the materials to fly around in the chamber. When the fans are turned

off, the heavier feathers quickly fall to the bottom while the fluffy down continues to float about for a while before settling. Among the many source countries of goose down, Hungary is universally ranked highest in regard to thermal quality and comfort, with Poland not too far behind. While some suggest that this is due to the colder climates there, it appears that the real reason is Hungary’s long and proud tradition of raising geese — and raising them well. While geese in colder regions produce more down, they do not necessarily produce better down, on a pound-for-pound basis. To learn more about the production of artisanal Hungarian goose down items, we spoke with Mrs. Chaya Vitty Weingarten, a chassidish woman from Belgium who founded and operates Hungarian Goosedown. Over the last few years, Mrs. Weingarten’s firm, based in Hungary, has become a top exporter of highquality, long-lasting, handcrafted Hungarian down comforters and pillows. She explained that many down producers in China or elsewhere use exaggerated or misleading terms to brand their down. Most notable is “Siberian goose down,” which sounds like something that will really keep you warm in frigid temperatures, even though there are no geese — and no down manufacturers — roaming around Siberia. Mrs. Weingarten’s introduction to the world of down came when her family was doing kiruv and educational work in Hungary. She would often buy highquality Hungarian down items for friends and family back home, and soon realized the great demand for pure, authentic down. A few years ago, she launched her business, with the goal to make affordable down comforters and pillows available to the community. The best down comes from mature and free-range geese —

and commercial manufacturers, in their quest to produce as much down as possible, do not provide this in their industrial settings. To get the highest-caliber material, Mrs. Weingarten says, she purchases large amounts of pure goose down directly from rural Hungarian farmers, whose welltreated geese are the ideal source

First we need to clarify what down is not: feathers. of top-quality down. The pure down arrives clean, but her team washes it again to ensure that clients receive material that is pristine, with no lingering smell. The products are all filled and sewn together by hand. Each blanket is designed with the “baffle box” method, in which a bunch of little squares are filled separately and stitched together to produce one contiguous item. These separated sections ensure that the down doesn’t migrate to one side, leaving the user with uneven coverage. Additionally, each pocket traps air inside, offering even more lightweight insulation. Mrs. Weingarten goes further and adds a six-inch border all around, for greater strength and improved trapping of warm air. For pillows, 100% down might sound cozy, but it isn’t something that works in practice as the sleeper’s head just sinks in. To remedy this issue, Mrs. Weingarten designed a layered pillow with down filling the top and bottom layers, and more structured feathers filling the pocket in the center. People who’ve suffered neck injuries or otherwise struggle with nighttime pain continue to marvel at how these creatively designed pillows provide comfort and, most importantly, a good night’s rest.

Fill power is determined by measuring how many cubic inches are filled with one ounce of down. The higher the number, the more air is trapped, leading to improved lightweight insulation. It is widely assumed that a fill power of 800 or more is far superior to one in the 500 range, but Mrs. Weingarten cautions that these higher fill power blankets do not last as long due to their lack of volume. Mrs. Weingarten’s team does not suction out the air from the pillows and blankets when ship-

Her products have been selling well since entering the market, with the significantly lower rates an added bonus to the great quality of nature’s best insulator done the right way. Despite a push by topT Hlabs E R I Gto HT create synthetic warmers that can match the powers of down, nobody has been able to produce anything that combines the warmth, fluffiness, lightness and breathability of this magical material. When it comes to insulation, down continues to be the winner — hands down.

FOR CHOLEI YISROEL

As the winter sets in and grips us with its icy fingers, how thankful we are for the advent of heating and our ability to control the temperature within.

Sometimes the solution is as simple as snuggling under a blanket that is as warm, as light, or as breathable as one prefers. Here we have a look at the different types of warming protections out there — and there are many, each with its distinct features. Turns out that the term “blanket” is not a blanket statement at all.

Blankets The term “blanket” goes back to the fourteenth century, when Flemish weaver Thomas Blanquette presented to the public a tightly woven wool covering that could wrap its owner in warmth. What sets a blanket apart from other warmers is the fact that it’s made of only a single layer of wool, cotton, linen or just about any material. In hotels, and homes where flat sheet sets are used, blankets are part of standard bedding protocol, though the debate rages on as to whether the blanket should be under the comforter when sleeping (to avoid the necessity of frequent washing of the more-expensive comforter) or whether the comforter should be closest to the sleeper for optimal warmth. For our wee ones, blankets are the way to keep them warm, and the variety is endless — cozy, plush, wool, or so very breathable, like the muslins in which summer newborns love to be swaddled. And when it comes to childhood fuzzies, many kids actually become attached to that fleecy, cozy comfort and will prefer to use those blankies until they’re dog-eared and an overall disgrace. The military is still big on blankets, too, and that’s as far as the soldiers’ sleeping comfort goes. Made of 70% virgin wool and 30% synthetic materials, military blankets measure 62 by 80 inches, are fire retardant, and have been around for centuries. Blankets are also great as throws for couches and chairs, and come in every delightful color, material and design. You can choose beautiful chunky or fine knits, chenilles, sherpa or fleece. And come summer, light blankets adorn the beds in many homes where the A/C doesn’t get cranked up too high. Perhaps the latest on the blanket scene are wearable blankets to surround working individuals in comfort and warmth, as well as pocket blankets that provide a deep lower sack for toasty toes on frigid days. Warm

But inevitably, when there are two people residing under the dominion of the same thermostat, one of them likes things toasty and the other needs the temp to dip below 68 degrees for what they deem proper ventilation. What is a family to do in such a case? Who gets to sleep, and who gets to melt — or freeze?

Quilts Warm

Quilts have nostalgia-evoking vibes reminiscent of colonial times, and they also have the distinction of being the first proper bedding, coming after a time when people slept under burlap bags filled with straw. And while we might find the notion of early American housewives frugally patching together fabric scraps charming, the truth is that our country’s first quilts were made from expensive imported textiles and were seen in upper-class homes only. Quilts are legendary for having been used to indicate safe houses in the Underground Railroad during the era of slavery, with different design motifs providing crucial instructions and alerting refugees to the safety conditions of the place. Quilts are made of three layers — the top, the backing and the batting between them — to provide warmth. Many quilts also feature ornate stitching, patchwork and motifs. Today, these quilts serve purposes more decorative and sentimental than functional, since these handmade items are delicate and generally don’t offer all that much comfort and warmth.

While we might find the notion of early American housewives frugally patching together fabric scraps charming, the truth is that our country’s first quilts were made from expensive imported textiles.

Comforters Warmer

Comforters are, in essence, commercialized quilts with more heft and more basic stitching, born when the manufacture of handmade quilts segued into mechanical labor. Like quilts, they have a top, a backing and a filler — generally down or synthetic materials — and quilting to keep the stuffing evenly distributed. They’re more densely filled than duvets, making them flatter, heavier and less delicate — since comforters are designed to be used uncovered and laundered regularly. Comforters are popular as part of a sheet set ensemble, as well as in children’s rooms for their variety of patterns and colors, plus their ease in use and in bedmaking.

Duvets

A Dose of Therapeutic Warmth

Electric Blankets Heated blankets were created for those chilled-to-the-bone, chronically icy-toed fellows who hibernate indoors from the sun’s first dip. Oh, and for shivering sukkah-sleepers, too. A quality electric blanket is designed safely; most turn off automatically after ten hours. Cleaning instructions are to be followed exactly to keep safety at the max. The best overall heating blanket currently on the market, as nominated by Good Housekeeping, is this Sunbeam microplush heated blanket that has a remote with ten heat settings, a prewarming option, and automatically regulates and distributes heat throughout the night. Warmest

Warmer Still

The French word duvet actually means down, a nod to the goose down that filled the first of these cozy warmers. Today, a duvet is a sack filled with insulating material — down, feathers or synthetic fillers. Although the original was a sack without any quilting, today’s versions often have stitching in place to keep the fill from shifting. Duvets are light and warm and among the most comfortable of bedding options. Duvets started out in Europe and then gained popularity in the United States, where many homes have retired the complicated top sheet sets. This probably explains why those whose families hail from Europe know of no other bedding option... Duvets are meant to be used with duvet covers, as they are not to be washed often (some must be dry-cleaned only), and they’re showcased in beautiful linen sets and crisply made beds.

Weighted Blankets

Last year’s most popular item is still going strong (many claimed that InstaPot had to give up its prime spot in the sun for this one). These therapeutic blankets, which are usually filled with plastic pellets or glass beads, weigh between five and thirty pounds. The deep pressure stimulation they provide has a relaxing effect, relieving stress and creating a sense of calm for a good night’s sleep. Many children and adults have found that it alleviates anxiety, insomnia and ADHD restlessness, and brings relief to those with ASD and sensory issues in general. In addition to weighted blankets, there are a variety of other tools that can help those for whom the deep pressure can provide relief, among them weighted “hug” vests, dolls and teddy bears. Safety must be kept in mind when using any weighted products for young kids (and especially when the fill is a choking hazard). In general, the item should not exceed 10% of the individual’s body weight.

Who doesn’t love cuddling up with their favorite book or magazine on a cold winter afternoon? I remember always wishing to do that on one of those huge, fluffy beanbags. I’d flip through catalogs looking for the perfect color and size — only to find out that they’re really expensive! So when thinking of a fun and cozy winter DIY project, I immediately thought, “Beanbag!” Not only is it cheaper to create one yourself, but you can also choose the exact colors and size to match your room! Then you can get to cozy up and have the pleasure of knowing that you made your beanbag all on your own. This beanbag can also be used as storage for all those stuffed animals you have lying around, or for some extra blankets and pillows that need a good hiding spot! Keep in mind that the measurements given are for a child-sized chair. Feel free to adjust accordingly! BY: GITTY KAY

Sewing machine or seamstress Okay, so there’s one catch to this project: You’ll need a sewing machine. Or a good friend with a sewing machine. Or you can do what I did and have a seamstress do the sewing. I still like to consider that a do-ityourself project; after all, I chose the fabric, cut it out, took it to the seamstress, showed her what to do, picked it up from the seamstress, and stuffed it — all on my own!

• You’ll need two pieces of fabric, each one measuring 45” x 32”. • Choose fabric that’s heavyweight and has a bit of a stretch to it. • You can use the same fabric for both sides, choose coordinating patterns, or go with a color-block look. I chose a heather gray jersey for one side and a soft blue velour stripe for the other. • Be sure the fabric has a comfortable texture since you’ll be spending lots of cuddle time on it!

You’ll need 3.5 cubic feet (or 100 liters) of filler. You can use any of the following filler options: • Beanbag filling (have a vacuum cleaner on hand) • Shredded memory foam • Polyester fiber fill • Stuffed animals • Pillows and blankets You’ll also need:

Measuring tape Scissors Fabric marker

Let’s get started! 1. Cut both pieces of fabric to measure 45” x 32”. 2. Place them right sides facing each other. 3. Fold them lengthwise, with the open ends on top. 4. Measure 6” from the top right corner. 5. Draw a rounded edge, as shown. 6. Cut at the drawn line to round the end. 7. If you’re using a sewing machine, follow the next two steps. If you’re taking it to a seamstress, guide her on how to sew the fabric by following steps 8 and 9. 8. Open the folded fabrics. With the right sides still facing each other, sew down the two long sides and the rounded end, forming a Ushaped bag. Be sure to make the seam strong! 9. Turn the fabric right side out. Refold the open end the opposite way, as shown, and sew in the zipper. 10. Fill the beanbag with the filling of your choice.

Enjoy cozying up! 1

I see things, from behind my tin cup. See the emotions, the tears, the laughter. See the people in the swell of humanity that surrounds me, moving past me, the old woman, a hump of rags on a dirty, busy street. See the curious child, all bright and sparkling eyes and blond curls, with questions at every turn. See the busy mother, always rushing, rushing, rushing. Questions unanswered, voice cut off, the sparkle dims. Places to go, people to meet. See the stressed family, teenagers looking longingly into the window of expensive boutiques, at shoes they will never buy. See the dejected, lonely, poor and weak, all squaring their shoulders, facing the world. And me, I sit there, frozen in time, watching as the world moves past me in a blur of rushing color, to carpool, lunch dates and dentist appointments.

Today was that kind of day, the day that sucks all the energy out of me, leaving me shattered. I didn’t think it would be so hard with my husband out of a job. The endless stream of expenses, and the boiler is breaking, I know, I just don’t want to say it because then we’ll have to fix it with money we don’t have. Noami’s braces, the kids’ clothes, their shoes... Life swirls around me, a never-ending mantra of no money, no money, no money. Nothing to do, nowhere to turn. I wrap my son in his thick winter coat; I need some things from the grocery to make an easy supper before I fall apart. The cold hits me as I step out, a frigid curtain that makes the breath freeze in my throat. So cold, winter swirls about me, the snow moving in a cruel dance before my eyes. Eyes smarting, I trudge on. I forgot that it gets this cold, forgot the frigid iciness of winter seeping into my very bones. I huddle deeper into my pathetic pile of blankets, hoping that the snow that whirls around me will spur people to toss a coin into my rusty cup. But this is not to be. The few people braving the streets step gingerly around the old pile of rags, without even noticing the huddled old woman nestled within.

I feel a sudden wetness on my cheeks, feel burning tears stream down my face. I can’t believe I’m crying. I thought that the years on the street had hardened me dry. Tight as I pull the blankets around me, I can’t find even a modicum of warmth.

Perhaps it is the cold that makes me notice her, the woman who sits at the corner, pitiful, forgotten, alone. I shudder to think how cold she must be; only a few tattered blankets shelter her against the rain and snow that storm mercilessly around us. The biting wind whips at me, icy

I could have been a mommy too! I cry, but the howling winds rip the soundless shout from my throat. My eyes bleed tears that turn into ice on my cheeks, and something inside me breaks and dies.

Where is he? It’s dangerous for him in this cold, and my heart quickens as I imagine him running on the cold, empty street, all alone. I try to run, bags weighing me down on either side, snow thickening around me. Where is he, where could he — And suddenly I see him, turning the corner, small body but a blur in the white. He stops. Is he talking to the beggar woman at the corner? A million reprimands of “Don’t talk to strangers” die on my lips as I think of her, a woman just like me, the only one who noticed a lost little boy. I quicken my pace to catch up with him, see his eyes light up and face relax as he recognizes me. We are standing right next to the woman now, close enough to see how the cold has bleached her fingers white, how her shaking hands curl pitifully around her tin cup. And suddenly, before my mind can

winter swirls about me, the snow moving in a cruel dance before my eyes. knives of sleet to my face, and still, I can’t get her out of my mind. How desperate she must be to come to this, I think to myself, and breathe past the sudden thickness in my throat. My heart blooms with a burst of gratitude for the little we do have, because we really have so much. My son runs in front of me, hands outstretched to catch the falling snow.

grasp it, I am walking in the opposite direction, crossing the street, marching into the inviting warmth of the cafe at the corner. “One large coffee,” I say to the girl at the counter and watch as she takes a cup and fills it up with frothy brown richness. “Three dollars,” she says, voice bored, nails rapping impatiently on the shiny counter as I fumble with my purse. Three dollars. That’s crazy. You need every penny! a voice whispers rebelliously in my ear, and I hold out the money before I can change my mind. The cold hits me again as I step out. It’s darker already, night creeping in though it is still early. I cross the street, walk until I reach her. I hold out the coffee with a shaking hand before I lose my nerve, see the confusion as she raises her eyes to meet mine. I think of what it must be like to live in a pile of crumpled rags on the street corner, ignored, despised, alone. I know loneliness. I know despair. Perhaps we are not so different after all. “Here,” I say softly, and lean forward to give her the cup. She holds out her hand, trembling, as if in a trance. As our eyes lock, I see a flicker of understanding in her sad gray eyes, and I hope she hears the words unspoken, the thoughts unsaid. And for a moment, the world is warm.

I hear his steps before I see him, the desperate staccato of footsteps on the icy street. He is a handsome child, cheeks ruddy from the cold, huge eyes darting to and fro. A lost child. “Come!” I shout as he tears past me, my voice rusty from misuse. “Come, I’ll help you, little boy!” He turns around quickly, startled, and darts away as soon as he catches sight of me. “Mommy!” he sobs, more desperate than before as tears fall from his eyes, spilling onto his cheeks.

DIRECTIONS:

Finely dice the onion. 1. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Place the pot over medium heat. Add oil and then add the diced onions. Allow to saute for about 10 minutes, stirring every so often to prevent burning. Add garlic and saute for an additional 3 minutes. 2. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Increase heat and add farfel, stirring it while it browns, about 2 minutes. 3. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Add water and spices. Lower flame so that the water continues to simmer, and cook for an additional 20 minutes, or until the water is mostly absorbed. 4. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ INSTRUCTIONS FOR PUTTING AWAY THE FOOD:

Allow to cool at room temperature until the pot is no longer hot to the touch, and then place in the fridge, well covered. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ TIPS:

If short on time, you can skip the sauteed onions and bake farfel in the oven: First put the farfel, crushed garlic and the oil into a pan and place it in the oven for 10 minutes at 350°. Then remove the pan, add the water and spices, cover well, and allow to bake for another hour. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After farfel is baked or cooked, fluff it with a fork to prevent clumps. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ For the farfel to have the right texture, shut the flame before it is entirely cooked through. It will swell some more while the water is fully absorbed. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If you’ve ever visited Monsey, you’re probably familiar with the Canada goose. But how much do you know about these waterfowl besides the fact that they’re everywhere and honk a lot? Here are a few tidbits to get you better acquainted with these big, loud birds. IN CHARACTER Even though geese are categorized as waterfowl, they spend most of their time on land. Geese are very social animals, and the relationships that form in a flock are both amazing and amusing to watch. For instance, they have strong affections for others in their group. If a goose gets sick or is wounded, a couple of other geese may drop out of formation to help and protect their injured friend. Where populations are dense, Canada geese commonly form gang broods, which are groups of 20 to 100 goslings from different parents that move around and feed together accompanied by a few adults. This is sometimes cooperative, with families joining up so that some adults can watch the babies while the others forage for food. Often, though, joining a gang brood isn’t voluntary, and in those cases, dominant pairs of geese attack and kill other adults and absorb their broods into their own. Either way, joining a gang brood is good for goslings, since larger families can more easily control the best foraging spots.

IN FLIGHT In Asia, bar-headed geese regularly migrate over the Himalayan mountain range — and even over Mount Everest at an altitude of 30,750 feet, where the air is thin and the temperatures drop to -60 degrees! Canada geese usually fly in a large V-shaped formation for efficiency, with one bird in the lead and the others trailing behind it in two diverging lines. There are two reasons for this. First, the V-formation makes the flock more energetically efficient, with vortices of air created by each goose’s flapping giving some lift to the birds behind it. Second, the formation makes it easier for the geese to communicate and maintain visual contact with each other.

A GOOSE CAN REACH 32 TO 37 INCHES IN LENGTH AND 8 TO 22 POUNDS IN WEIGHT.

Geese have an average lifespan of 20 to 25 years.

Geese use 10 different sounds, with the differing calls depending on the situation.

By: Esti Greenfeld

Once a year, adult geese will lose their flight and tail feathers. This process, which takes about six weeks, is called molting and renders the geese unable to fly until their new feathers have come in. Geese like to be near water during the molting season to be able to escape from predators.

Geese honk while in flight to enable communication and to encourage the flock to maintain a V-formation.

Some geese have serrated edges to their beaks that give them a toothy appearance, but it is an adaptation to their bill and not at all actual teeth.

THE GOOD AND THE BAD In the 1980s, after decades of poor hunting laws and unreliable habitats, geese were nearing extinction. During those years, less than 500,000 geese populated North American fields and landscapes. Over the past 40 years, however, much to the great delight of goose down–pluckers, geese have grown into a full-fledged society of their own, with over 5 million members of their breed vociferously occupying our landscapes. And we only have ourselves to blame. Over time, we’ve designed and created many spaces — think airports and parks — that possess all of the elements in which geese live and multiply: water, grass and unobstructed views. These prime habitats have turned the geese population into the queen of all nuisances. Aside from dining on our grass and crops and generally making themselves heard, the large size of their flocks mean they are the greatest hazards in airports. To avoid bird-aircraft collisions, employees at some airfields try deterring the geese by playing goose alarm calls, and when that doesn’t work, they often proceed with a ceremony of fireworks...

A GROUP OF GEESE IS CALLED A SKEIN IN FLIGHT, A GAGGLE ON THE GROUND, AND A FLOCK ANYWHERE.

Despite their naughtiness, these large birds do provide us with some benefits: their down. Those in the downharvesting industry remove goose down from the birds’ fur for people to enjoy. It takes the down from approximately 75+ birds (!) to make an average comforter.

‫פרשת ויגש‬

I met your melamed today. He gave me a great report!

So what do you say?

It’s… it’s stunning! What a beautiful stone!

I decided that such an exceptional student deserves a special gift!

Keep it well, son. It’s worth a lot! Make sure it doesn’t get scratched, because that will lower its value.

Yes, Tatty.

Did anything happen? Oy, such an ugly crack!

114 / THE BORO PARK VIEW

A day later:

I ordered the best jewelsmiths. We’ll see what they say about the crack. Who knows, maybe they could fix it…

No, Tatty will be angry if I hide it from him. I’d better tell him about it.

I hope…

Even if I will succeed in fixing it, there will always be a sign of the crack. I can’t help you.

No, it’s impossible. It will never be as beautiful as it was.

My sir, I have a suggestion for you: I’d like to emboss beautiful engravings on the stone with your son’s name and special embellishments —

And the scratch will look like a part of the embossment.

Not worth the bother.

Several weeks later: It’s… it’s unbelievable! It’s much more beautiful than before!

Let’s hope so.

The crack was all for the best!

WHAT DOES THIS TELL US? “I am Yosef your brother,” Yosef said to his brothers who didn’t recognize him. The brothers looked at him in shocked silence. They deeply regretted selling him and were angry at themselves. Yosef told them, “Do not be sad… it was for our sustenance that Hashem sent me before you.” Yosef is saying, “I had a mission. There was a reason I was sold. Hashem — not you — sent me here, and it was all for the best, so that our father and yourselves would have food throughout the hunger.” Everything Hashem does is for the best! (The Dubno Maggid)

I wasn’t careful enough. Tatty warned me about this, and he’ll be upset. Maybe I shouldn’t tell him? Should I hide the stone?
