HAFRASHAS CHALLAH
BYADEINU IT’S IN OUR HANDS.
Separating challah is one of the three unique mitzvos gifted to the Jewish woman. The mitzvah of challah holds immeasurable spiritual benefits and is a widely-accepted segulah for abundant blessings.
A global initiative has been launched, by developing a network of hundreds of groups of forty women to perform the mitzvah and segulah of challah collectively, during which they will daven for Kapayim patients and contribute a minimal donation to cover the cost of their care.
FORTY STRONG
THOUSANDS OF WOMEN WILL JOIN THE CHALLAH BAKE WITH A WEEKLY DONATION – AND GET IMMEASURABLE MERITS FOR THEMSELVES AND THEIR LOVED ONES.
It’s a well-known and widespread segulah to engage in the mitzvah of challah - or other mitzvos - in groups of 40, which significantly increases its spiritual impact.
BE ONE OF THEM!
IN KAPAYIM'S HANDS
TZEDAKAH DURING CHALLAH
When a parent or child is diagnosed with a serious illness, the family is overcome by a maelstrom of chaos and confusion. Kapayim provides a multitude of services in the patients’ homes, hospitals, or in the Kapayim centers, so that stability and normalcy can continue to reign in their home.
Women are accustomed to give tzedakah before performing the holy mitzvah of challah. By combining the mitzvahs of challah and tzedakah, our accompanying tefillos are more effective - as the Rambam says that in the merit of tzedakah, our tefillos get answered.
Join Byadeinu and have a hand in Kapayim’s life-saving work on behalf of cholei Yisroel.

(Re: Blanketed in Warmth, Issue 65) We read The Boro Park View each week and enjoy it immensely! However, I must disagree with one of the articles you recently published about keeping warm during the winter with blankets. The article said that quilts today are for decoration and display only. I must disagree! There is a world of quilters out there making quilts that are being used by babies, children and adults. I’ve been a professional quilter for over eighteen years now, and I’ve made hundreds of quilts. You would be surprised at how many use their quilts to stay warm and cozy! My three granddaughters, for instance, have used their quilts since the moment they came home from the hospital. The quilts I make are a warm hug to those who receive them, and I’d love to share with the world my love of quilting. Thank you! Malka Serkin
WARMING THOUGHTS (Re: From Behind My Cup, Issue 65) I love the stories you run, but was especially moved by this week’s account of a woman in the cold. As I was sipping a warm cup of coffee, The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. Please email comments@thebpview.com.

Why Does Nachi’s Head Hurt? He keeps rubbing his eyes and often cries during class. He takes too many breaks during homework. His biggest fear is having his Rebbe call on him during class. He complains of headaches when reading.
Nachi’s struggle is real. He has difficulty combining the use of both eyes due to a problem in his eye teaming system. While most of us don’t even realize the significance of using both eyes in what comes quite naturally to many, some children face an arduous task exhausting so much energy and brainpower for light reading. Is he complaining about stomach aches at school? Does he have difficulty completing his work assignment and get chronic headaches? His symptoms are real. Working twice as hard to read along, he faces public humiliation, constant headaches and frustration. Straining his eyes, he gets tired quickly and may appear to be lagging behind his peers. At GO Vision Center, our doctors identify the source of vision related issues. Find out more about an evaluation that can help your child defy the odds.
LET’S FIND OUT! Vision Therapy provides long term muscular treatment which recognizes and treats commo n behavioral issues that stem from improper dual eye coordination. I was so touched to read about the heartwarming act of kindness of a woman dipping into her last bit of money to make the cold a little bit warmer for another person. And I realized that as much as we find the winter lonely, dreary and oh-so cold, we have to remember to appreciate the indoors, the heating, and the simple steamed drinks that warm body and heart. (Re: Made in China, Issue 64) I found your article about toy production really fascinating. Like most families with young ones, PlayMags is a huge part of our daily life, and it was so interesting to read the backstory. The first thing we did, of course, was check the design our PlayMags have — and sure enough, it seems we didn’t get a new set in a while, because the tiles in all three sets (never enough!) we’ve purchased have an asterisk-shaped design. As an aside, I agree with the letter-writer who shared last week that nothing excites our children anymore, whether toys or exciting edible treats. They really do have too many toys, and they take these colorful delights for granted. Y.G.
YOUR VOICE CALLING FOR “HELP” With the popularity of cell phones, it’s easier than ever to connect with one’s cleaning help. My help recharges her phone during her short stay at my house and has no compunction about answering her phone when it rings during her work hours. Today I was privy to a call in which the caller was attempting to have my cleaning help understand when and where her services were needed. My help was brandishing my mop in all directions of the room, but while the two speakers were trying to breach the language barrier during those ten minutes of conversation, that mop did not once touch the floor. Those ten minutes of lost cleaning time were not added to my allotted time, nor did I deduct ten minutes of pay; I’m simply not that bold. Fellow homemakers, when you place a call during work hours, please understand that those minutes you’re spending on securing help for yourself are minutes deducted from someone else’s (paid) time slot. Please save those calls for the evening hours when workers are generally at home. If they prefer not to answer their phone at that time, because it’s “family time,” please understand that the rest of the day is “work time.” R.S.

WEEK 15:
EATING IN SHUL The question of eating in a beis knesses covers very many scenarios, ranging from simply taking a small drink to using the beis knesses as a place to host a full-blown event. How are we to view these occurrences? Are they permitted? Under what guidelines? The first clear allowance is the “talmid chacham exemption. A talmid chacham, defined for this purpose as one who spends his full day engaged in Torah study, is permitted to eat within a beis midrash. Although the sanctity of such a place is usually conflicted by eating, for such a person the beis midrash is considered his home, allowing some degree of greater latitude.[1] This allowance, however, is limited to his natural home for learning, the beis midrash. It does not extend to a place dedicated exclusively for tefillah, a beis knesses. Following this further, it is unclear how this will pertain to our contemporary shuls. The majority of our shuls today host both tefilos as well as a consistent amount of learning over the course of a regular day. It is uncertain if this allowance will apply in our hybrid structure.[2] The next realm of allowance is that of sha’as hadchak, a situation of necessity. A classic example is the average Yid sitting down to his nightly seder. Can he partake of a coffee or eat a small pastry? In this case, necessitating that this person leave
the shul, go eat, and then return, would exact too heavy a price in lost learning, both in quantity as well as in intensity. As such, he is allowed to drink a coffee, eat a pastry, or partake of other food or drink during or just prior to learning. This holds true both in a beis knesses as well as in a beis midrash. As this allowance is borne of necessity, if there is an available side room that presents an easy option one must go eat outside, provided that in the particular situation doing so will not really impact his learning. What about eating when one is not in the middle of learning at all — such as during a kiddush, sheva brachos meal or other? An understanding of this halacha hinges on the resolution of two seemingly conflicting pieces of information. On the one hand, Chazal tell us that eating or drinking is not permitted in a beis knesses. On the other hand, we are told that the reason it was commonplace to make Kiddush in shul on Friday night was to fulfill the Kiddush obligation for all the poor and needy who would be eating their Friday night meal in the shul. How could they do so? Was that not inconsistent with the prohibition of eating in a shul? There are a number of resolutions offered. The first[3] is based on a concept mentioned last week: the ability to create
a tenai, a precondition, limiting the kedusha of the beis knesses. Although this does not allow for wanton personal use, it creates an allowance in scenarios where there is no easy alternative. As communities of yesteryear often lacked the space to host the multitudes of poor travelers passing through, hosting the communal seudah in the shul was allowed. A second resolution[4] offered is that insofar as there is a communal obligation to tend to the needs of the poor, this is classified as a mitzvah need. It is interesting to note that when feeding the poor, the seudah is not a seudas mitzvah per se, and for the one partaking, it’s certainly no more a mitzvah than his everyday routine. However, since the arrangement of the setup is due to a mitzvah, there is sufficient reason to allow eating, even if the eating itself is in actuality not a mitzvah. Assuming this track, however, would open the door to hosting all forms of seudos mitzvah regardless of whether an alternative option existed. A third understanding is that truthfully, the Shabbos seudah for the needy was not in the beis knesses at all; instead, the Kiddush recited after davening simply allowed them to eat their meal in a side room.[5] What emerges, then, is that the concept of allowing a seudas mitzvah in a shul is a subject of dispute. Although there are those who permit this, the majority of the Rishonim are not in favor.[6] As for the bottom line, the Mishnah Berurah
IN SUMMATION: 1. It is generally forbidden to eat or drink in a beis knesses. 2. Those engaged in learning may eat or drink in a beis knesses to avoid the distraction of having to leave. It is questionable if there is an allowance for a seudas mitzvah; although not ideal, there is what to rely upon when faced with no easy alternative. In all cases, kalus rosh remains prohibited. This includes discussions of politics, business and sports, as well as a prohibition on consuming any significant amount of alcohol.

rules that one should not rely on this opinion. On the other hand, one should not express protest to those who choose to rely on this, if the situation is one where there is no available side room or alternative. Effectively, this situation will be one incorporating both the factor of tenai as well as the factor of seudas mitzvah. A final category of permitted eating is for those who are in the beis knesses for the purpose of guarding it, doing repairs, and the like, and are unable to leave for any significant duration. Where does this leave us? Having a coffee alongside your Gemara is certainly permitted. Having food or a meal as part of a siyum, sheva brachos, pidyon haben, or any other bona fide seudas mitzvah is not ideal, but there are bases to rely upon when there is no alternative. A practical example of this would be when a shul does not have a social hall or any properly sized side rooms available. Standard non–seudas mitzvah eating is not permitted. A kiddush after davening on Shabbos, barring any special occasion, does not qualify as a seudas mitzvah, though it generally will be permitted regardless if the purpose is to allow for learning afterward. “Giving tikkun,” providing some form of food for people to partake of in memory of one who passed away, is likewise not a seudas mitzvah. While all are welcome to take food onthe-go, only those staying to learn may eat within the beis knesses.[7] In all cases where eating is permitted, it is critical to note that only the eating itself is permitted. There is no allowance for any kalus rosh, or lack of seriousness, within the beis knesses. This means that throughout the duration of the meal, no politics, business or sports may be discussed. (See last week’s article for further details.) As well, consuming any significant amount of alcohol is forbidden.

[7] There are those who eat freely in a beis knesses, based on the concept that one can avoid kedusha entirely by never designating the room as a beis knesses in the first place. Effectively, this beis knesses is no more sanctified than the spot of a backyard minyan, and all the laws resulting from the kedusha are not in effect. Indeed, there are those who suggest that it is for this reason that the name shtieblach came into existence, to proclaim that these were in fact nothing more than a miniature shtub, a personal home, and not a beis knesses. It is of serious doubt, however, that this could be applied to shtieblach today. Generally, the donors certainly wanted to get their money’s worth and certainly intended for a beis knesses to be established. Additionally, the conduct of those who maintain it certainly is indicative of a beis knesses. Furthermore, were the shtieblach truly unsanctified, it would demand that those who frequent it daven in a shul instead, given the halacha mentioned previously (Week 3), that unless there is a specific pressing need, one should always be davening in a full-fledged beis knesses.

Rare Photo of the Chofetz Chaim Emerges Eighty-seven years after his passing, a never-before-seen photo of the Chofetz Chaim has emerged, showing the venerated gadol seated at a table with two men whose identities have yet to surface.
Photo credit: Sinai Publishing Books and Judaica
The close-up shot of Rabbi Yisroel Meir Kagan was printed in a booklet of stories, which was released last week by Rav Dan Schlesinger, owner of Tel Aviv–based Sinai Publications. The company bills itself as the oldest Jewish publishing house in the world, reported Israeli news site B’Chadrei Charedim. The photo was found with documents that came from an inheritance and indicate that the Chofetz Chaim had been planning to move to Eretz Yisroel. According to the documents, Rav Yosef Levi Chagiz of Yerushalayim had sent 100 lira to Radin to cover the costs of the Chofetz Chaim’s relocation, money that was returned when the trip failed to materialize. The rare photo marks only the second time that footage of the Chofetz Chaim has come to light, with video of the Chofetz Chaim arriving at the Knessia Gedolah in Vienna in 1923 making headlines nearly six years ago.

to the Brooklyn Democratic County Committee. A 26-year-old father of two and a Boro Park resident, Schwartz threw his hat in the ring for the vice chair position of one of the largest Democratic committees in the country “to build coalitions for the greater good,” reported Boro Park 24. “I am so proud to see the diverse group of officers running, which is exactly what Brooklyn represents, and I believe we will accomplish great things together,” said Schwartz during a Zoom committee meeting. Schwartz sees himself as a bridge builder. The former communications assistant for Assemblyman Dov Hikind, Schwartz realized that being politically involved brought with it a means to help others, and he became involved in politics in an effort to represent the voice of the younger generation. Speaking after his win last night, Schwartz said that he intended to work hard to ensure the interests of all of Brooklyn’s Democrats. “I strive to be a voice for our community at the table where important decisions are made,” said Schwartz. Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein expressed his support for Schwartz, saying, “As a member of Borough Park’s chassidic community, you bring a unique perspective and set of skills to this position. I know you will make us proud.”
After Hours Digging Through Trash, Williamsburg Volunteers Find Missing Tefillin Trading their traditional attire for white waterproof jumpsuits, a group of volunteers from Williamsburg spent hours wading through New York City’s Department of Sanitation trash heaps to find a pair of accidentally discarded tefillin. Hamodia reported that after security footage showed a janitor in a local yeshivah throwing a white plastic shopping bag containing a rebbi’s tefillin into the trash, United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg reached out to DSNY Brooklyn North Chief Jarrit Scotti, who was able to identify the truck carrying the precious cargo. The contents of the sanitation truck was isolated at the Varick Avenue Sanitation Transfer Station, and volunteers in protective gear spent hours rummaging through garbage bags until the tefillin were finally located. Williamsburg residents in yellow rubber boots and green gloves shouted “mazel tov” and burst into song and dance as

the velvet tefillin bag bearing the initials hey-alef-hey was pulled, clean and intact, out of the white plastic bag. According to The Jerusalem Post, the Sanitation Department receives numerous calls about accidentally discarded items. Department spokesperson Belinda Mager said that belongings are often found if notification is made on trash pickup day, though volunteers need to be willing to put on protective gear as they dig through heaps of garbage that hopefully include their lost item. Mager said that being able to recover the tefillin during a year that has been particularly difficult was heartwarming. “It’s really nice when we can make it work because you think, well, if I threw something in the trash, it must be gone forever,” said Mager. “Well, not necessarily. We have a fair amount of these lost and founds. There’s a happy feeling.”

De Blasio: Turn Speed Cameras On 24/7
in locations that aren’t being monitored by speed cameras, Mayor Bill de Blasio is calling on the state to have cameras up and running around the clock. Touting the success of his Vision Zero program, de Blasio said that speed cameras save lives by curbing bad behavior. The mayor acknowledged that there have been occasions where he himself hasn’t been as careful as he should have been and has gotten a speeding ticket, but said that tickets serve as a powerful deterrent. “They change behavior,” said de Blasio. “They get people to start slowing down. They get people to obey the law. They work and we need more because we need to save lives.” Speed cameras currently operate in the city between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., and de Blasio noted that the overnight hours have been particularly deadly. The mayor said that three-quarters of the traffic fatalities in theT Hcity E R Ihave GHT taken place in locations with no cameras or during hours when they were not in operation, and while 2020 has seen relatively few pedestrian fatalities, the number of deaths of motorists and cyclists has risen alarmingly. De Blasio reminded listeners during a December 22nd press conference that expanding operating hours for the city’s speed cameras shouldn’t really be a burden on anyone. “If you’re not speeding, you have nothing to worry about from a speed camera, so extending them to greater hours only makes sense,” said the mayor.

After his employee Leonid fails to find out any new information regarding Gustav’s or Edo’s backgrounds, Joe Ludmir is dismayed to hear that someone is inquiring into Alex Korman’s donation for the Potolskys’ daughter’s wedding. In 1949, Gershon visits Gustav’s orphanage. The director tells them that they have no idea what Gustav’s real name is, or anything else about him, but that he is sick in the hospital and keeps muttering the name “Yosef Ludmir” and a certain address in Bratislava. Gershon visits the boy and is convinced that he is his brother Ernie’s son. “I’m having lots of different feelings, Tatty.” Elisheva tasted the soup, nodded to herself, and rinsed the spoon. They’d just been to the orthopedist together, and her father was now sitting at her kitchen table. “When this good fortune began to smile on us, I was very surprised. I was happy, of course, and I thanked Hashem, and that was it. Then I began to suspect that something was going on, and after that I assured myself that I was just being suspicious. But then, after a day or two, I decided that my suspicions were actually very well founded. And I started to feel frustrated and annoyed that someone was playing around with us like this. Then I decided to look at the whole thing as just very funny.” She served her father a bowl of soup, with minimal salt as per his diet. “So what do you think, Tatty?” “It’s always good to laugh,” he said hoarsely. “It took me time to learn… Thanks for the soup.” “You, Tatty? Learned to laugh?” When had her father last laughed?
“No?” He was surprised at her answer. She was quiet for a minute, thinking. “A bit,” she admitted. Her father was not, and had never been, very talkative. He certainly did not have a highly developed sense of humor. But… yes… he was almost always in good spirits. He was perpetually optimistic, and, come to think of it, he certainly had a very distinct laugh, which they heard whenever he allowed it to emerge. It was like a short, endearing burst of laughter, and even the children liked to imitate it. “I began my life at the end of the war, you know,” he said suddenly. “I hardly remember what was before that.” “During the war you were in a dormitory or something, right?” She knew so little about her father! And that was a lot compared to what he knew about his father. Or his mother. Or about himself. Nothing, and more of nothing. “Yes. It was actually a Catholic orphanage. I had a friend there. A Jewish boy.” He breathed deeply. “The only oth-

er Jew besides me. We were smuggled out together.” “To Janek and Ulush Cohen’s house?” “Yes.” He turned the spoon over in the bowl, like a child refusing to eat. “Then we got separated.” “When?” “A short time after they took us out of the orphanage. We each came to Eretz Yisroel alone.” Elisheva nodded, treasuring these rare moments when her father, of his own accord, just sat and spoke, without her having to extract every detail and every word from him. “And for me he was… the only one from the past.” “Was he a relative?” “I don’t think so.” He took a few spoonfuls of soup before he continued, “But he was my link to the past. When he left, I was just…” He paused, and then surprised her with a metaphor which, although clichéd, was very apt: “Like a leaf without roots.” “So why didn’t you try to meet? To keep up with each other?” Elisheva looked at her father, who had risen to put his bowl in the sink. She ignored the incessant ringing of both her house phone and her cell phone. He didn’t respond; he just sat back down to make a bracha acharonah. “I thought he wouldn’t want to,” he said heavily, when he finished. “But maybe I made a mistake about that.” “And you never traced any roots.” “No. You know that.” He raised his head as though he wanted to tell her something else, and then lowered it again, apparently regretting it. And then he added in a low voice, “But my rebbi taught me to be happy this way, too. Because when a Jew does what he has to do, it doesn’t matter through which branch he draws his strength.” “Because we’re connected to the ground this way, too.” She nodded, familiar with this idea, and then asked, “This metaphor, that the branch doesn’t really matter, also comes from your rebbi?” “No. Mommy, aleha hashalom, told that to me.” “It’s nice.” “Your mother was good with words like that.” And with that remark, a smile — and even a short laugh — he

ended the conversation. He went into the little room, which would become his own private suite whenever he decided to officially move in with them, and Elisheva was able to check her phone. “I have news that is more urgent than urgent!” That was one of the four messages that Blumi had left her, after three calls that had not been answered. “Get back to me right away, Elisheva!” Elisheva went over to the vegetable drawer to get potatoes to cook up for mashed potatoes, calling Blumi as she went. “Finally!” “What’s doing, Blumi?” “Baruch Hashem, baruch Hashem. Listen, they got back to me from the private investigator’s office. Did I tell you two days ago that I contacted them?” “No. A private investigator? I didn’t mean for you to invest so much in this, Blumi.” “Don’t worry about it. It’s chump change for me. I also didn’t ask for any serious investigation or surveillance, just for some answers to a few of my questions.” “Which questions?” “First question: Exactly how lucid was Alexander Korman in his last year of life? Second question: Were his deceased parents really named Peretz and Tziporah Genendel? And third question: Were they killed in the war?” Had the potatoes she was holding been cooked, they would have long been turned to mush between Elisheva’s fingers. “Nu?!” “First answer: Not at all. Second answer: Not at all. Third answer: Not at all.” Magdiel, Eretz Yisroel, 1949 Batya returned to Magdiel alone. Gershon returned four days later, together with the boy. He had remained at the feverish boy’s bedside for three days. During the day Gershon had paced around the room; on rare occasions he’d gone into the hospital courtyard to smoke, and at night he’d dozed on the chair near the bed. On the third morning, the boy’s fever finally went down, the coughing eased, and toward lunch-

time, his eyes began following Gershon as the latter paced around the room while keeping a close eye on the bed in the corner. “You are not Janek…” the boy said in a hoarse voice, when Gershon returned to him. “Janek?” Gershon pulled back the wooden chair that served him faithfully day and night. “Who is Janek?” “The man from Bratislava…” “Are you from there?” The boy did not react. He closed his eyes again. “Sir, are you from the orphanage?” A short male nurse entered the room. “The boy is being released tomorrow morning. Please tell the management that he needs good food and rest, and make sure that he gets it. Will you be able to give him a quiet room and some good care until he recovers completely? He came back pretty fast after last time.” “I’m not from the orphanage.” Gershon stroked the boy’s cool forehead. “And I have no idea what they can do. But it is possible that I will be able to arrange a quiet room and good care for him. I need to speak to the director there about it.” He sat down on the chair and leaned forward. His fingers played with the edge of the boy’s blanket. The child — Yosef? — stared back at him. He wasn’t totally focused, but there was some alertness and interest in his gaze. The nurse left the room, and Gershon shifted on the chair, rocking back and forth, humming quietly. Did Ernie, Hashem yinkam damo, also sing their father’s Kah Ribbon? No reaction. The boy had closed his eyes again. What do you want? he chastised himself. Even if Ernie sang this song at home, and even if this Yosef really is his child, he was too young to remember the tune. True, music is something that penetrates very deeply, but if the boy was born in the middle of the war, which is likely, his father probably did not have
time to sit and sing to him. Nothing more happened that day; the boy did not make any sign that the tune was familiar, nor did he offer any more information. But by the next day, Gershon had obtained permission from the orphanage to take the boy home with him, and the two set out for the house in Magdiel. “I couldn’t leave him there,” Gershon told Batya late that night, when the boy was safely ensconced in a soft, warm bed. Gershon had spread two thick woolen blankets on the wide wooden bench for himself. “And in the hospital they warned me not to burden him with anything that could slow his recovery. So I haven’t asked him anything yet, but —” He tugged at his left ear. “He’s a sweet boy who’s so alone… whether he is Ernie’s son or not. And my heart tells me that he is.” Batya nodded. She didn’t point
accurately, your family.” “My family?” Gershon’s breaths became rapid. “Maybe… maybe your father.” He sat up at once. “My father? Where do you know him from?” “Maybe we’ll talk about it tomorrow. You should rest a bit more now…” “No. Not tomorrow.” The boy reclined again. “Please, tell me now.” Gershon sat down on the edge of the bed and held the pale, thin hand in his own. “My name is Gershon Ludmir,” he said quietly, acutely aware that it might be better to do this in another day or two. But he just could not wait. And the boy, apparently, couldn’t either. “Ludmir!” The boy’s eyes grew round. He stared at Gershon, and suddenly burst into tears. “Your name is Ludmir…” He gasped. “That’s why you said you know me? And… how did you know to come to the hospital?” “Because you said…” Gershon whispered, noticing out of the corner of his eye that Batya was peeking into the room, “...you said, ‘Yosef Ludmir.’ Do you remember?” The boy didn’t react. He just sat there, sobbing hysterically. Slowly his weeping began to subside, until suddenly, he became totally silent and put his head back on the pillow. He lay with his eyes closed and breathed deeply, as though he had fallen asleep. “Are you all right?” Gershon asked, stroking the child’s cheek with his finger. The boy didn’t move. He just opened his eyes for a minute and then closed them again. “Ludmir,” he said. “Do you know Yosef Ludmir?” Gershon softly pressed the boy’s palm. “Maybe… it’s you?” A long silence hung in the room, which remained unbroken even when, an endless few seconds later, the boy nodded.
The boy sat up at once. “My father? Where do you know him from?”

out that the country was full of sweet, lonely children. Why bother? Gershon wanted to take care of this boy for now, and if that would quiet some of his anguish, then of course she would support the idea. A sharp cough came from the boy’s room, and Gershon abandoned his bench, letting the blankets slide to the floor. The boy was lying there with his eyes open, staring at the figure that had entered the room. “You are from Bratislava,” he said in Slovakian. He looked more alert than any other time they had conversed. “That’s right,” Gershon said as he straightened the boy’s pillow. “Do you know me?” The boy’s eyes shone, and his forehead was not burning up. “I… I think I might know you.” Gershon spoke cautiously, following the boy’s reaction. “Or more

President Trump Signs Covid-19 Relief Bill THE PULSE: President Trump surprised lawmakers when he announced that he opposed the COVID-19 relief bill, which passed both the House and Senate by large bipartisan margins. The bill was months in the making and includes the extension of enhanced unemployment benefits, new funding for the Payment Protection Program, aid for schools, including private ones, rental eviction protection, and payments of $600 to American adults and children. President Trump expressed his opposition to the bill because he considers the $600 amount too low and is opposed to some of the omnibus bill’s spending that the COVID-19 relief bill is attached to. Trump called the bill a “disgrace” and called on Congress to “get rid of the wasteful and un-

necessary items from this legislation and to send me a suitable bill.” However, on Sunday evening, President Trump agreed to sign the bill but committed to continuing to fight for increased stimulus aid for American families. “Much more money is coming. I will never give up my fight for the American people!” he said. According to a statement put out by the White House, “The Senate will start the process for a vote that increases checks to $2,000, repeals Section 230, and starts an investigation into voter fraud.” THE OMNIBUS BILL: The COVID-19 relief bill was attached to a separate omnibus bill that funds government operations for the upcoming year. The omnibus bill includes funding for foreign aid and the arts. The omnibus bill is separate and distinct from the COVID-19 relief bill. The president expressed opposition to the “pork” included in the Omnibus bill and singled out the bill’s foreign aid

provisions that he opposes. However, the State Department, which is a part of the executive branch, requested much of the foreign aid, and that is why Congress appropriated the funding. By signing the omnibus bill into law, the president averted a government shutdown that would have begun on Monday night. THE IMPACT: The president’s actions put Republican lawmakers in a precarious situation. Republicans tend to be fiscally conservative and are caught in a situation where the president and congressional Democrats are on the same page regarding their demands for a more considerable
amount of money for stimulus checks. Many Republicans oppose increased funding for stimulus checks. They prefer a more targeted approach that delivers relief to those who can demonstrate that they have suffered financial harm due to the pandemic. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is in a particularly precarious position, as he had initially opposed any COVID-19 relief bill that would cost more than $500 billion. The current bill is over $900 billion, and increased check amounts will likely add to the total. Trump and McConnell have had a strained relationship ever since McConnell and Republican Senate leadership have recognized Joe Biden as president-elect. The president’s actions also put the Republican Senate candidates in Georgia in an awkward position. Both David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler supported and voted in favor of the COVID-19 relief and omnibus bills, and both have wavered on the president’s call for higher check amounts. Their Democratic opponents jumped on the president’s opposition to the legislation and publicly backed his demand for $2,000 checks. Democratic candidate Raphael Warnock said, “Donald Trump is right; Congress should swiftly increase direct payments to $2,000.” President Trump intends to travel to Georgia and campaign for Loeffler and Perdue on the eve of the January 5th election.
McConnell Calls on Republican Senators Not to Challenge Election Results THE PULSE: Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called on his fellow Republican senators to avoid challenging the electoral college results when Congress convenes on January 6. Congressman Mo Brooks of Alabama has announced his intention to contest the election results but will need a senator to join him to require Congress to vote on the matter. Incoming Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) has expressed openness to joining with Brooks. Senators Rand Paul (R-KY) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) are also considered possible candidates who may choose to buck party leadership and contest the election results. In a lead editorial, the pro-Trump editorial board of Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post called on the president to accept defeat and work on salvaging his legacy by throwing his energy into the January 5th Georgia runoff election instead of focusing on the January 6th session of Congress. THE IMPACT: McConnell is opposed to contesting the results because it is a futile attempt to overturn the Electoral College results and will not succeed. McConnell sees no political upside to a vote and perceives a political downside of putting Republican senators on the record with a public vote on this matter. However, individual senators have their own political calculations, and Tuberville and Cruz may see an advantage in currying favor among the MAGA base of Trump’s supporters.
Congress to Convene in Special Session THE PULSE: Congress is to convene in a special session to attempt to override the president’s veto of the National Defense Authorization Act. The president vetoed the bill due to his opposition to the renaming of military bases named for Confederate leaders and due to his insistence that the legislation include a rollback of Section 230 protections for technology companies. The NDAA passed with a veto-proof majority in the House and Senate, but it has yet to be seen if Republican lawmakers will vote to override the presidential veto. Many Republican lawmakers may be wary of crossing the president on this issue. THE IMPACT: A veto override will strain the relationship
between the president and Republican lawmakers. However, a failure to override the veto will put military funding and cybersecurity protections in the bill at risk.

FISH ‘N CHIPS WITH CORN SALAD
FISH ‘N CHIPS WITH CORN SALAD If the broiler setting was invented just for this dish, it would have been well worth it.
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
4 potatoes, peeled and very thinly sliced
1. Line half a cookie sheet with baking paper. Spread the potatoes and onions on the paper. Spray (or brush) them well with oil, and sprinkle them with salt and pepper.
1 small onion, peeled and thinly sliced Cooking spray Salt and pepper, for sprinkling 1 lb. fresh (or 1 pkg. frozen, defrosted) tilapia, flounder or other thin fish fillet 2 T. oil ½ tsp. soy sauce ½ tsp. paprika ½ tsp. onion/garlic powder ¼ tsp. black pepper ¼ tsp. salt
CORN SALAD Dress up boring canned corn with this colorful, crunchy salad. Yields 4 servings
INGREDIENTS 1 can corn (12 oz.), drained ½ bell pepper
2. Set the broiler to high. Place the oven rack on the second row from the top (close to the heat, but not the closest). Broil the potatoes for 10 minutes. 3. Meanwhile, mix the oil and spices in a 9-inch flat plate. Dip the fish into this mixture, turning the fish to coat it completely. 4. Remove the cookie sheet (with the potatoes) from the oven. 5. Cover the second half of the cookie sheet with parchment paper and place the coated fish onto it. Return the pan to the oven and broil the potatoes and fish for 12 minutes. Cover the fish loosely when done if you won’t be serving it right away. 6. Note: Do not cover the entire cookie sheet with baking paper in step 1 in order to prepare space for the fish to bake later on. The broiler will burn the uncovered paper, causing your smoke alarm to sing. Trust me, I tried it for you.
2 sour pickles 1 jalapeno pepper, optional 2 T. oil Salt and pepper, to taste DIRECTIONS 1. Dice pepper and sour pickles. If using jalapeno pepper, remove all seeds and rinse the pepper before dicing (unless you like it really hot). 2. Mix the pepper and pickles with the other ingredients in a bowl and toss well.

CHICKEN GNOCCHI MEAL 82 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
LEMON DILL CHICKEN DINNER
CHICKEN GNOCCHI MEAL
Just fifteen minutes is all it takes to get this flavorful dinner going. Don’t skip this recipe only because you don’t have the ingredients listed; instead, see the note below for easy substitutions.
Simple and hearty, with enough variations to suit your personal eating style.
Yields 6 servings
1½–2 lb. dark chicken stew
INGREDIENTS
5 T. flour
6 chicken bottoms or tops
1 T. oil
1 bag (1 lb.) baby carrots
1 large onion, diced
½ bag (8 oz.) frozen Brussels sprouts
3 cloves garlic, sliced
2 lb. mini red potatoes
1 pkg. (16 oz.) shredded cabbage
1 large onion, peeled and cut into wedges
2 tsp. paprika
2–3 cloves garlic, sliced
¼ tsp. black pepper
8 cubes frozen dill (or herb of choice)
1 tsp. salt
4 T. lemon juice
1 lb. frozen gnocchi
1 tsp. salt
3 cups boiling water
½ tsp. black pepper DIRECTIONS 1. Place the chicken into a large, deep baking pan. Surround chicken with carrots, Brussels sprouts and potatoes. 2. Top with onion wedges, garlic slices and dill, and then sprinkle with lemon juice, salt and pepper. 3. Bake, covered, for 1 hour. Baste the chicken and vegetables with pan drippings, and continue baking for another half-hour to an hour until the chicken is done. Note: Use regular carrots, peeled and cut into short strips, in place of baby carrots. Any green vegetable, such as green beans, broccoli or asparagus, can replace the Brussels sprouts. And regular or sweet potatoes, cut into quarters, may be used instead of the mini potatoes.
Yields 6 servings
INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS 1. Sprinkle flour over chicken and toss to coat lightly. 2. Heat oil in a 4-quart pot. Add chicken and cook, covered, over high heat for 10 minutes, mixing once. 3. Add onion, garlic, cabbage, salt and spices. Mix well. Lower heat to medium, and cook, covered, for 30 to 35 minutes. 4. Add boiling water and gnocchi. Cook for another 10 minutes. Stir gently before serving. Note: Use sliced peppers/mushrooms instead of, or in addition to, cabbage. Also, a package (12 oz.) of pasta can be used instead of gnocchi. Cook for 10 to 20 minutes, until pasta is soft. You can prepare this dish with 1½ cups rice, as well, but add the rice after cooking for only 20 minutes, then continue cooking for 20 to 30 minutes until the rice is done, adding more water if necessary.

“A good book has the element of surprise,” my interviewee tells me. “If you’re predictable, then your writing is pedestrian.” What’s true for books rings true for articles as well. Luckily for me, the surprises began popping up even before I picked up the phone...
L
ike so many other teenagers, I stumbled upon the novels by author Avner Gold and felt myself drawn into a rich world of suspense and excitement. Though I didn’t read every book in the series at that point, one thing was certain in my mind: Avner Gold stood out as one of the most talented of Jewish writers. Nowadays, a good handful of years later, I still feel a tingle of excitement when I think back to those books. So when The Boro Park View decided to track down Avner Gold and learn the story behind his stories, I was thrilled to be the one to whom the article was assigned. And that’s when I was met with the first surprise: the famous Avner Gold is just as real as the characters he created — which is to say that he, too, is but a figment of one’s imagination. It took a
bit of digging for me to find my way to the real person behind the golden pen: Rabbi Yaakov Yosef Reinman of Lakewood, New Jersey.
THE APPLE NEVER FALLS FAR There’s a saying that proclaims “ignorance is bliss,” and I had an abundance of it as I dialed the rabbi’s num-

ber. Had I known the chashivus of the person on the other end of the phone line, I’d probably never have been brazen enough to place the call. You see, Rabbi Reinman is no simple author. With such illustrious ancestors as the Baal Shem Tov, Rav Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev, and the Baal HaTanya on his mother’s side, and eighteen generations of Galician rabbanim preceding him, specifically of the Narol dynasty, on his father’s side, it is of little surprise that Rabbi Reinman was blessed with an analytical head, a unique power in his pen, and the fire of Torah burning in his heart. “My father’s mother’s father was Rav Shmuel Engel,” Rabbi Reinman shared. “He was the posek hador.” The lomdus and piety continued down the family line. “My father was an iluy, a very big talmid chacham,” Rabbi Reinman continued. “He constantly wrote Torah and was published in the Torah journals Pardes, Hamaor and Hadarom, and he wrote a sefer, Sefer Lev Ish. I grew up aware of my background and felt a sense of responsibility.” That sense of responsibility has withstood the test of time, proving that the apple didn’t fall far from its tree. After learning in Yeshivas Chasan Sofer and then under Rabbi Shurkin, the young Rabbi Reinman found himself in Beth Medrash Govoha, learning in a chaburah with Rabbi Olshin (now one of the esteemed roshei yeshivah of BMG), as well as many others who went on to become prominent rabbanim and roshei yeshivah. He was four or five years younger than the others in his group but was able to hold his own. He told me that he had the privilege of “telling over a major piece to Rav Shneur [Kotler] at the end of every zman.” It was Rav Kotler who started their chaburah on learning shtaros, the area of Talmudic law dealing with contractual documents. “It was very hard, very complicated. I just loved it. I took to it like a fish to water.”
88 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
Delving into the complexities of shtaros ultimately led to Rabbi Reinman’s publishing his first sefer, called Shufra DiShtara. It is a sefer that is widely used in yeshivos and bears a glowing haskamah from none other than Rav Shach, zt”l, himself. Over the years, more seforim in Lashon Kodesh were added to the list, including additional volumes in the Shufra collection as well as the highly praised Abir Yosef collection of original commentaries on the Torah and mo’adim. “I have many seforim; not everything has been published. I have a lot of writings. That’s what I do. I’m a mechaber.” Rabbi Reinman explained that although he could have opened a yeshivah, he wanted to be free from the burden of focusing his energies outside of the cycle of learning and writing. But as is the way of life, bills must be paid and food laid upon the table, and the table in the Reinman home was no exception.
A COMPANY — AND A SAGA — IS BORN “When I was in my mid-30s, I had to decide what I could do. I needed to find a way to make money. We were a growing family; I couldn’t expect my father-in-law to support us indefinitely. I wanted to do something that would give me the freedom to learn and write most of the day.” To that end, Rabbi Reinman and a chavrusa opened C.I.S. Publishing. “The point of this company was to provide ‘mailers.’” Sensing my puzzlement, Rabbi Reinman paused to explain that in the 1980s, institutions used to mail out free books to encourage donations. It was a popular technique in that era, and one that kept C.I.S busy with writing and editing new projects, translating seforim, and preparing design and text for print. It was within the walls of C.I.S. that Avner Gold and his characters were brought to life. Bais Kaila, Lakewood’s first

girls school, Rabbi Reinman explained, wanted to do a mailer. “I asked someone to write up stories. I intended to edit them, but it didn’t work out. We had a deadline and no stories. So what could we do?” Rabbi Reinman quickly came up with a solution. “There was a story I used to tell my kids. I figured I would write it. I locked myself into a room and wrote The Promised Child in five days.” For those who have little experience with writing, let me demystify this statement: Writing a novel in under a week is an anomaly — something that just doesn’t happen al pi derech hateva. But as Rabbi Reinman says, “a stream of consciousness” flowed over him, enabling him to get the job done on time. Despite the apparent siyata d’Shmaya, he didn’t imagine that anything would come of his efforts — aside from donations to the school, of course. “I figured it would be a throw-away. I just wrote. I didn’t plan, I didn’t research. I didn’t even look at a map! I didn’t have an outline, just a general idea of where I wanted to go. I made up the names of the places I wanted my characters to visit — except Krakow.” When the story was finished, a simple book cover was designed and then a name was needed to place on the byline. Rabbi Reinman and a friend tossed out random ideas and settled on Gold for the surname, and because Rabbi Reinman was partial to the name Avner, the deal was sealed. Avner Gold was born. And his life was to be long and well lived, despite the original prognosis. “I thought it would be a one-shot thing and goodbye. But people liked it, and they wanted more.” At that point, Rabbi Reinman realized that he’d have

to return to the story and work out some kinks. “I didn’t even know what century I was writing in. I just knew there were horses and wagons. Now I had to take this a little more seriously. I had to go back….”
WORKING OUT THE KINKS In The Promised Child, the main character — Rabbi Mendel Pulichev — is invited to represent the Jewish community of Krakow in a debate with a representative of Catholicism. Because Krakow was a major hub of rabbanus, Rabbi Reinman had to determine if there was a time period in history into which he could feasibly insert his story. After digging through the Jewish history of Krakow, he discovered a historical window in the time period between 1640 and 1643, in which there was a gap between the Bach’s and the Tosfos Yom Tov’s leaderships. “They probably spent some time interviewing people,” Rabbi Reinman said, pointing out that everything in those days took considerably longer due to the more primitive modes of communication and travel. During those years, it is conceivable that a strong candidate for the rabbanus could have been chosen to engage in activities on the community’s behalf. Once the time period was chosen and that first novel written, the series took on a life of its own. Over a span of two decades, the twelve books in the series were born, each one picking up the thread of the previous books’ stories. The books give readers an infusion of Yiddishkeit and its history, covering time periods such as Tach v’Tat, the era of Shabsai Tzvi, and the Spanish Inquisition.
THE LESSONS WITHIN “My goal in those books is to teach. To teach history. To teach values. To teach Torah. To teach concepts. To teach English. To teach vocabulary. To teach writing.” And teach they certainly do.
90 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
Though drastically different from the many other English books Rabbi Reinman has worked on — such as translations of the Menoras Hama’or, stories of the heilige Berditchever, and the Let My Nation series for which he collaborated with Rabbi Yosef Deutsch — the Avner Gold books impart valuable lessons in the fun format of fiction. The books not only filled a niche in that regard, but basically created it. Instead of novels crafted for the sole purpose of entertainment, the Gold series was born in the beis midrash. Because despite the fantastical scenes and drama that keeps one on their toes, the undercurrent of Torah hashkafah found in these books serves as a way to teach readers more about where they come from and why they are here. This method of teaching has proven especially valuable in the classroom, engaging young minds in the exploration of their holy past. The Marrano Prince, the eighth book in the saga, was deemed such a valuable resource that a study guide for use in the classroom was written and disseminated by a curriculum professional. Plays, too, have been acted out with these stories, bringing the characters to life on the stage. (On that topic, Rabbi Reinman chuckled and said that it would be proper for a camp or school to ask permission before performing a play based on his works. “I’d give it!” he said good-naturedly. “But they should ask.”) All in all, these books are beloved by those who have read and reread them — and they’re about to become even more beloved. To my delight, Rabbi Reinman informed me that he’d recently invested effort in rewriting the entire series, going back and adding chapters, touching up the writing, and making these books even better than readers remember. So far, nine of the twelve new editions are available through ArtScroll/Mesorah, with the others soon to follow. I can barely wait to get my hands on them, for I know that within I will find a treasure trove of Gold.

Q&A
WITH RABBI YAAKOV YOSEF REINMAN How long did each book take you to write? A couple of months, not working full time, which means a few hours a day. The Marrano Prince took the longest; it took me about three months.
What kind of research did you have to do in creating these books? I read different books: encyclopedias, Hebrew books, English books, books on political history. The Marrano Prince interrogation scene came directly from Inquisition files, taken straight from their meticulous records.
What do you think makes your books so beloved? My main ko’ach in fiction and in Torah is chiddush. I have a tremendous imagination, which is a gift from Hashem. I take no credit for it, only for the effort I invest in my work. You come to a sugya, and it is very difficult. You have to think out of the box. That’s the power of my seforim; I come up with original ideas to solve problems. That’s really the talent I bring to my books. A good book has the element of surprise. If you’re predictable, then your writing is pedestrian. I also have the ability to write dialogue. I don’t think what a character should say. I create a scene in my mind, and I allow the characters to come to life and speak to each other. Sometimes, what they say surprises me! Generally, with a dynamic conversation, I just let them go and try to keep up with them in my typing. I don’t think imagining what they would say and putting words in their mouths would be genuine.
Which is your personal favorite of the Avner Gold series? The Marrano Prince, because it’s so ambivalent. It’s not so

clear: Is the villain really a villain? A priest betrays Don Pedro, but he believes he is really saving his soul.
How was it to go back, reread, and breathe new life into your books? There are some people who have read my books so many times that they can quote from them verbatim. When they speak to me about the books, I don’t always know what they’re talking about. I don’t read my books. There is a limit to what a person can do in one lifetime. I’m a first-draft writer, and once it’s finished I move on… The editing was harder than I expected. I’ve edited hundreds of books, but I like to write. Now I edited every single line. I snipped and polished. I also had to write many more chapters. Some of the books have been doubled in size.
peak sspeak ssqueak queak sing or sing Puppa Guy will repeat everything
Do you see yourself reviving the series and continuing it? When the twelve-book rewrite is complete, then maybe I’ll write more. I would like to bring the series up to current times. I can’t, however, see myself writing another 15 to 20 books, but in a few years, we’ll see. I’m thinking of doing a few collections of novellas that will bring it up to date. I’m pretty sure I’m not going to do any more full-length novels, but I can continue the saga through short stories. It’s a different medium, and I don’t have much experience with it, but it would be an adventure to try it. The main thing for me is my seforim. Everything else is there to support that.
With several seforim in Lashon Kodesh, more than 60 books in English, and more still on the way — including a 450-page summary of the Moreh Nevuchim that’s been four years in the works , as well as one on Chovos Halevavos — Rabbi Reinman is following in the blessed ways of his ancestors, disseminating Torah in a both pleasant and intellectually stimulating manner.

Open to the public nearly every day of the week, the Leah Fishman Library treats its borrowers to the best of Jewish publishing. They come in droves, eager to inch their inner bookworm through the vast selection of books lining the library shelves, all available for the taking, gratis. But let’s start at the beginning. Once upon a time‌ 96 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / December 30, 2020 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
There was a caring savta in Boro Park who passed along her love for reading to her grandchildren. Rather than having them visit the Brooklyn Public Library and check out books with questionable content, she paid a visit to the local Judaica bookstore. She asked her grandchildren which books they were interested in and made her purchases accordingly, and soon the books were devoured by the young bookworms. Before long, she was indulging her grandkids with every new title. The family was delighted. They
quenched their thirst for the printed word with books of every genre — and kept coming back for more. Before long, word spread and neighbors and friends learned of the book collection at Savta Fishman’s home. “It was very unofficial,” her daughter says. “It just became a neighborhood thing.” Neighbors would come through the back door every Friday to pick up fresh reading material. As the improvised “library” got busier, some granddaughters would make sure to be there when borrowers arrived. They would record by hand who took which book. When Mrs. Fishman passed away, her children knew just what to do l’ilui nishmasah: open a full-fledged lending library. Inspired by that solitary bookcase exploding with books that were so generously shared, the Leah Fishman Library opened its doors. It was just after her first yahrtzeit, in the summer of 2010.
A PAGE FOR EVERY AGE AND STAGE The free library is every book lover’s dream! Still located in the Fishman home (though that may change, im yirtzeh Hashem), the library takes up nearly the entire first floor. The core books purchased by Savta Fishman have been joined by thousands more. To date, more than 7,000 books and periodicals form a collection that is constantly being updated. Every book is color coded with the category it falls under marked on its spine. There are bookshelves filled with books for children, a separate section for teens, and yet other shelves lined with adult-only books. The library is a kid-friendly place, and many children happily come to select books on their own. Watching their excitement over the new books they find is delightful. It isn’t uncommon to spot a kid plopped on the floor, totally lost in a book and otherwise oblivious. Most kids make a beeline for the comic books, which is the latest craze. At the beginning, the librarians were hesitant to bring them in, feeling that these illustrated books don’t encourage good reading habits. But now that shelves of comics have joined the collection, Mrs. Fishman’s daughter observes that some children who would never have read otherwise are now reading avidly. Some parents, however, are strict with their children, encouraging them to choose standard books before moving on to the comics. The novel section is an all-time teen favorite, with young adults delighting in each new title, and adults go for varying genres, from hashkafah to historical fiction to biographies, and everything in between. The most popular selection for grown-ups is true short story compilations. Perhaps that’s what they have time to read... Teachers often use the library as a research tool, combing through the science, history and Torah categories. Some of these books are expensive, and readers can sit down and read them on-site rather than take them home.

who generously devote their time to handling the books. Some are book lovers, some enjoy the social aspect of helping out at the library, and some love scanning the books. And all of them find this microcosmic world of books a cozy and exciting place to devote their chesed time.
ACQUISITIONS The books are generally purchased from a local store with a steady agreedupon discount. Others are donated. “People are always donating books,” Mrs. Fishman’s daughter says. “Sometimes we get too many [copies of specific] books, and we pass the extras on to other libraries.” The librarian checks how many copies of any given title are already on the shelves, assesses how often it is borrowed, THEY QUENCHED THEIR THIRST FOR and determines if the library should keep another copy of the book or donate it elseTHE PRINTED WORD WITH BOOKS OF where. JOY THE SOCIAL ASPECT, AND SOME
LOVE SCANNING THE BOOKS. AND ALL OF THEM FIND THIS MICROCOSMIC WORLD OF BOOKS A COZY AND EXCITING PLACE TO DEVOTE THEIR CHESED TIME.
During the first year of a brand-new book’s life, there is a $1 charge for the loan. This minimal fee helps offset the cost of buying new books. If you lose or damage a book, you should pay for it. Similarly, there is a fee for lost library cards. While these fees were instated to prompt accountability, ultimately, they also enable the library to add all current titles to the collection.
PLOT, SETTING, CHARACTERIZATION As a library member, do you perhaps wonder how to stay in the librarian’s “good books?” The library runs smoothly when books are returned on time. If only patrons would understand! And it should be self-understood that the librarian and assistants don’t appreciate when borrowers waltz in two minutes before closing time… Requests and comments are more than welcome — and they certainly come in interesting forms. Borrowers have been shocked to hear that classics like The Secret Garden are not Jewish (and thus not available in the library). And an occasional comment that a book contains sensitive matter prompts the staff to move them to adult-only shelves or remove them entirely. It’s clear that many people are perceptive to the hard work invested in maintaining the library. They voice their gratitude via chocolates, notes and thank-you cards. These are very appreciated. One that stands out is a huge poster board thank-you card designed by some kid members. The outpouring of positive feedback tells the hardworking team on the other side of the librarian’s desk just how much they are appreciated — and this keeps them going!

A library is a place where we can forget the here and now and discover eras of hundreds of years earlier, hundreds of years later, or just two days from now. It’s an archive of human survival under so many different conditions, written by those who’ve survived to tell the tale. There, we get roused by biographies of our gedolim, and we’re motivated by the strength of the simple Yid. And we also get inspired by fictitious tales, because like our chassidic masters say, “Just because it didn’t happen, doesn’t mean it isn’t true.” Find one in your area, and start reading today! Presidential libraries are not libraries in the traditional sense; you cannot walk in and check out a book. Rather, they are facilities that archive, preserve and exhibit major events — political and otherwise — that took place while that particular president’s administration served as the face of the nation. Prior to the establishment of the first presidential library, presidents dispersed their papers between different libraries and private collectors. Often, many important, historic and celebrated artifacts were damaged or misplaced in the process. Once each administration was granted its own library, this no longer occurred. There is something very American and patriotic about our thirteen presidential libraries. They are living monuments to the past, while marking the point where current events turn into history. In addition to serving as research archives, they are also artifact museums that groups of children can visit.
118 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT WAS THE FIRST PRESIDENT TO ESTABLISH A LIBRARY. IN 1939 HE DONATED HIS PERSONAL AND PRESIDENTIAL PAPERS, AS WELL AS PORTIONS OF HIS HYDE PARK ESTATE, TO THE ROOSEVELT LIBRARY.
Highlights of the LBJ Presidential Library include a replica of the Oval Office. In a seven-minute conversation with the architect, President Lyndon Baines Johnson outlined his wish for an Oval Office look-alike — and he got it! Even though it was a bit smaller than the one he’d used in the White House.... His library, which was established in his house, sports a helipad on the roof simply because he was a great fan of helicopters! He loved helicopters so much, in fact, that his desk chair in the Oval Office was actually a vinyl helicopter seat. In the event of a flood or an emergency water landing, the cushion could have doubled as a flotation device. No joke. President Johnson was a legendary drama queen — er, king. He also had a life-sized, moving model of himself placed in his library, which plays the many recorded stories he told at dinners and events.

Jimmy Carter’s museum displays a most fascinating exhibit that shows different aspects of those affected by the Vietnam War; much of it features images captured by a soldier during the war. Also noteworthy is the exhibition of the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to President Carter and the display of many other beautiful gifts this former president received from world leaders. Don’t count on it happening, but when you are visiting, keep your eyes and ears open in case the 39th president happens to be on premises. In the section of the Carter Museum where there are drawers to pull out, please do so. You never know what you’ll find! One drawer, for instance, holds a drawing the president made of a tree house to be constructed for his daughter Amy, who was a child when the Carters occupied the White House.
AT 243,000 SQUARE FEET(!), THE REAGAN LIBRARY RANKS AS THE LARGEST PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY. THE AVERAGE VISITOR TAKES THREE TO FOUR HOURS TO EXPERIENCE THE GALLERIES AND THE 125,000 SQUARE FEET OF EXHIBITS. HEAD OUTSIDE TO SEE THE 6,338-POUND PIECE OF THE BERLIN WALL, WHICH IS COVERED IN GRAFFITI ON ONE SIDE. THE WALL CAME DOWN TWO YEARS AFTER REAGAN’S SPEECH AT THE BRANDENBURG GATE. A FEW PERMANENT EXHIBITS EXTEND BEYOND REAGAN’S TERM; THE ACTUAL AIRPLANE THAT SERVED SEVEN U.S. PRESIDENTS, INCLUDING REAGAN, IS FEATURED, AS IS THE MARINE PLANE USED BY PRESIDENT JOHNSON. THIS LIBRARY ALSO OCCASIONALLY PRESENTS THE VERY POPULAR TITANIC EXHIBITION.
Bill Clinton’s library contains the largest collection of presidential papers and artifacts. The 110-Foot Timeline is the focal feature of the entire center. The timeline’s panels reveal key occurrences that happened when President Clinton served in office. At the base of the timeline are books filled with the complete presidential schedule of the almost 3,000 days of Clinton’s term — a nice complement to the bits of Clinton correspondence featured throughout the library.
When visiting the George W. Bush Presidential Library, be prepared for a security check. After all, artifacts in his museum include a 22-foot section of steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. The metal detector visitors must pass through for security reasons may or may not be part of the exhibit to get the feel of post-9/11 paranoia... Bonus points if you dress like George Washington, but you don’t have to.
Coming Soon…
The Barack Obama Library is currently not open for visitors. This past June, a $5 million grant was approved toward the building of an Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.

Hello, my friend! It’s been a while. I’m so glad to see you!
And the children?
And parnassah? How’s it going?
So, how are you?
Wonderful, baruch Hashem!
Umm… the Eibeshter will help; He’s with us!
Oh, precious!
And your house — is it not too small? No, no! If there’s room in the heart…
Seems like he’s not having it easy with parnassah. He avoided answering that question. Oy, the Eibeshter should help him!
120 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
Maybe I can help… Maybe I can give him some money and make things easier for him.
No, I can’t do that. I have many other friends who are having it rough, and there’s no way I can help everyone.
If I give money only to him, then the others might be upset with me.
Everyone will come and tell me about their plight and expect me to give them a generous handout.
I know!
Take this promissory note. I wrote here that I owe you a thousand gold coins and have to return them in a month.
From this moment on, I owe you.
Because when my other friends will see the note, they will realize I had to give you the money, and they won’t be hurt!
But… you don’t owe me even one gold coin!
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US? Yaakov Avinu asks Yosef to promise that he won’t bury him in Mitzrayim, saying, “And you shall do with me kindness and truth” (47:29). Why did he say both kindness and truth? Is there kindness that is false? If Yaakov would have asked Yosef without having him promise to do so, it would have only been an act of kindness. But once he promised, it would also be an act of truth, because now he’d be obligated to carry through on his promise. In the above story, the wealthy man is supporting his friend not only as an act of kindness, but also as an act of truth. He promises to give him the money and signs on it. Now it is an act of both kindness and truth.
