The writer is to be admired for her devotion to her kids, but less commendable is what she writes that she does not cook special food for herself, because “we mothers just don’t dedicate the time and thought to ourselves as we would for our kids.” Young mom, please do take time for yourself; that will enable you to be the best mother for your dear kinderlach! She also writes that she is “not the type to research.” However, it is wise to do some research on celiac disease. STOP THE STIGMA (Re: Going Against the Grain, Issue 68) I’m a mother of a child with celiac disease. I read the articles on the topic, and I enjoyed them very much. Yet I want to comment that I feel the side effects were painted in too morbid of a light. I feel it must be mentioned that a person who manages celiac disease and stays on a strict gluten-free diet can live healthily and be symptomfree. The stigma that celiac disease has is unjustified. It should be viewed no worse than allergies. And whereas allergies can be fatal, untreated celiac disease can be harmful, but it is not a fatal condition. And when taken care of properly, the individual can go on to lead a productive and healthy life. A Mother

POINTS TO PROVIDE I am blessed to be part of a large extended family. As such, it often happens that I am asked to host a child overnight, for the weekend, or for an extended stay of a week or two. Mothers, please, if you’re sending your child away, even if it’s only overnight, make the host aware of all important medical information: chronic conditions, current medications, allergies (food, medication, materials) and even occasional tendencies. If your child is staying over for a longer period of time, it is important to let the host know all of the above, plus provide your child’s legal name, their date of birth, and pediatrician and insurance information. In case of emergency, these details can make it much easier to get your child necessary care faster and more smoothly. Do yourself, your child and the host a favor. When you pack overnight bags, add an index card with this information and tell your host to look out for it. May we never need it. E.H.

In the Midbar, the Yidden were treated to one of the greatest nissim of all time – perfectly prepared Heavenly food. With practically no effort, they were provided with blessed sustenance. In describing it to Moshe, Hashem says the mann rained down from Heaven as a test for Bnei Yisroel to see whether they would follow the Torah or not (Shemos 16:4). The Nesivos Sholom wonders about the words “l’maan anasenu.” The mann was a miracle; why, then, is it considered a nisayon, a test? In addition, the Yidden experienced many nissim in the Midbar and never were they commanded to keep a tangible remembrance. Only when it came to the mann did Hashem instruct Moshe to preserve a jar for all generations. Why?

HE WAS A TALMID of the Chozeh of Lublin, and he traveled to his Rebbe from time to time. In Lublin, he would rent a room and spend his days in Torah and avodah in the Rebbe’s court. He used to stay for a few weeks at a time, returning home once his money ran out. During one visit, on a Thursday morning, the talmid discovered that his funds were low. It was time to go home. Before he left, he went to part with the Rebbe. “Why don’t you remain over Shabbos?” the Rebbe asked. “I can’t afford it.” “Be my guest,” the Rebbe said warmly. The talmid was only too happy to comply. What could be better than sitting at the Rebbe’s table? The table was set with Shabbos finery. The Rebbe made Kiddush, and everyone sat down to the Friday night seudah. The talmid received a piece of challah, and then the fish was brought in. But before he had a chance to eat, his plate somehow turned over and his fish fell to the floor. Nu, so he wouldn’t have his fish. The talmid sat quietly, waiting for the next course to be served. But when the soup came, there was no portion for him! Every last drop had been ladled out of the pot to scrape together a bowl for the person sitting near him. The talmid was growing hungry, and even more so, it felt strange to be seated at the Shabbos table without taking a morsel other than challah into his mouth! He got up for a couple of minutes, and when he returned, he saw everyone finishing up their main course. And no one had thought to leave a portion at his place. It was bizarre. He could be mevater on his food, but was this called oneg Shabbos? The most surprising thing happened the following day. The scene repeated itself! Besides for the piece

The Rebbe asked, “Have you slacked off or committed any wrongdoing?” The talmid had davened and learned with his usual fervor and couldn’t pinpoint anything wrong that he’d done. “Perhaps you neglected a minhag?” The talmid scratched his head. Then he remembered that he was accustomed to saying Parshas Hamann, but he had skipped it on Friday. “After all, I didn’t need to ask Hashem for food this Shabbos — the Rebbe invited me…” “That’s it!” the Rebbe exclaimed. “Even if you have food on your spoon, you need siyata d’Shmaya to get it to your mouth.” The Rebbe explained that on his madreigah, because he felt taken care of by the Rebbe and forgot to rely solely on Hakadosh Baruch Hu, his sustenance was taken from him.

Snack and Toiletry Distribution for National Guard a Major Kiddush Hashem in D.C. With National Guard troops out en masse to provide security during the Biden inauguration, two well-known members of New York’s Jewish community took advantage of an opportunity to express their gratitude, traveling to Washington, D.C., to distribute supplies to those tasked with keeping the peace. Hearing that as many as 25,000 members of the National Guard would be heading for Washington, D.C., Alexander Rapaport, founder and CEO of Masbia Soup Kitchens, could only think of how his mother would pack every possible item that anyone could need whenever anyone went on a trip. With such a short deployment time for the National Guard, Rapaport reasoned that troops might show up in Washington, D.C., and realize that they were missing important items including food and toiletries. Having worked with Colorado Security to manage the round-the-clock appointments at Masbia, Rapaport reached out to the company’s Washington, D.C., office to discuss using their facility as a staging area and was told that the security firm would happily sponsor all of the goodies being distributed in addition to providing personnel and a pickup truck. Accompanied by Masbia’s chef Ruben Diaz, Rapaport made the rounds of security checkpoints on the night before the inauguration, handing out thousands of dollars’ worth of baby wipes, hand sanitizer, PPE, Kind bars, Red Bull, Oreos, M&M’s and other food items. “As we drove up, we told them, ‘Hey, we brought you some love from New York!’” said Rapaport. “Every checkpoint was different; some didn’t need PPE while others didn’t need toiletries. Some wanted only candy, while others wanted only drinks. By the middle of the night, everything we had brought was taken.” Wednesday, Inauguration Day, saw Rockland County Legislator Aron Wieder driving down to D.C. to do his part, with Colorado Security once again sponsoring a truckful of snacks, drinks and toiletries for the troops. Wieder told National Guard troops that as the grandson of four Holocaust survivors
who were liberated by American troops, he felt compelled to make the eight-hour round trip to our nation’s capital, telling them, “I will never miss an opportunity to say thank you to you guys, for the army, for what you guys are doing, for what you stand for and for liberating my grandfather and my grandmother.” In the course of their rounds, Rapaport said that they met many Jewish members of the National Guard, one of whom said that they’d had a minyan on Shabbos, with troops from Pennsylvania gifting them with the official National Guard shoulder patch that graced their own uniforms as a thank

Federal Government COVID-19 Aid Package Spares Yeshivos Major Funding Cuts Under New State Budget It was good news for New York yeshivos when Governor Andrew Cuomo released his 2021-2022 executive budget, a plan that provides nearly $250 million to nonpublic schools for various programs thanks to funding from the federal government. The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSA) was signed into law by former President Donald Trump in late December, making $248 million available to nonpublic schools, saving them from significant cuts because of COVID-19’s devastating financial impact. A statement released by Agudath Israel of America explained that the CRRSA ensures that yeshivos and public schools are both facing the same 2% reduction in monies allocated and also guarantees that yeshivos will not lose any funding for failing to provide the mandated number of days of instruction last year because of extended COVID-19 closures. Cuomo’s proposed budget still needs to be passed in both the Senate and the Assembly. “We were particularly pleased that our schools — who work so hard in educating their students — were held harmless for school closure and that other allocations were kept close to previous years,” said Rabbi
Yeruchim Silver, the Agudah’s director of New York government relations. “We will continue to work with our friends in the legislature and the executive office to hold the line on any further reductions, and should additional federal funds or other revenue sources become available, to pass on accordingly.”
Eichenstein Petitions NYC DOT for Hamilton Avenue Bridge Warning Light Citing traffic delays caused by unexpected openings of the Hamilton Avenue drawbridge, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein has asked the New York City Department of Transportation to install a visible alert on the Prospect Expressway, letting drivers know when the bridge is open, or about to be lifted, in order to accommodate passing boats. In his January 15th letter to Acting Commissioner Margaret Forgione, Eichenstein noted that drivers at the merge between the Prospect Expressway and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway have just seconds to decide whether they should continue on the BQE or exit to Hamilton Avenue, which runs below the elevated highway. Posting a light to notify drivers of the position of the Hamilton Avenue Bridge half a mile before that merge would give them the ability to decide which roadway to take, reducing congestion and alleviating traffic that occurs when the drawbridge is raised. “I believe this solution would be simple, yet effective,” wrote Eichenstein. “As a result, tens of thousands of drivers would experience an improved, safer and quicker commute.” According to Hamodia, the BQE is one of the busiest roadways in the country, with 153,000 drivers traveling its length daily. Traffic often comes to a standstill when the drawbridge is open, affecting both motorists and first responders who are

Felder Nominated to Multiple Senate Advocacy Committees as Legislative Session Opens With the 2021 legislative session now underway, Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins appointed State Senator Simcha Felder to five committees that are closely related to the interests of residents in the 17th Senate District — education, aging, mental health, disabilities and social services. “Seniors, students and individuals with special needs are among the hardest hit by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to provide the help and support they deserve,” said Felder. Boro Park 24 reported that Senator Felder intends to continue advocating for private school parents and their right to educate their children as they see fit. “A good education is not a question of the number of hours that teachers spend on specific subjects,” said Felder. “A good education is a question of quality, not quantity.” Felder also hopes to have the state consider having inmates in correctional institutions building ramps that would make stores more accessible to the wheelchair-bound, noting that they are currently tasked with producing gallons of hand sanitizer. Other goals include procuring additional funding and resources for the homeless and pushing for better reimbursements for children with disabilities. “This is not just a Jewish thing,” said Felder. “This is an issue with children who are being neglected by New York City.” Stewart-Cousins praised Felder, who was reappointed as chair of the Senate Administrative Regulations Review Commission, for his perspective and experience.

Trader Joe’s and Aldi Among Stores Paying Employees to Vaccinate While vaccine supply has been scarce, several large chain stores have been incentivizing vaccinations, offering to pay employees to get their double dose of the COVID-19 shot. Today news reported that both Aldi and Trader Joe’s will give employees the equivalent of two hours pay for each dose of the COVID-19 vaccine they take, and will allow flexibility in their working hours to schedule their appointments. Dollar General is taking a similar approach, offering four hours’ pay to employees who receive both doses of the vaccine, with online shopping site Instacart paying $25 to employees who take both doses. Together, the four companies have more than 375,000 employees in tens of thousands of locations. “We are especially excited for our front-line employees to have the opportunity to receive the vaccine and hope it gives them peace of mind as they continue to serve their communities as essential workers,” said an Aldi spokesperson. While employers can legally require their workers to take the vaccine, workers also have the right to ask for medical or religious exemptions, reported NPR. Addressing the issue, Dollar General said that it was encouraging its employees to vaccinate but wasn’t requiring them to comply with that request. According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, who now serves as President Biden’s chief medical adviser on COVID-19, between 70% to 90% of the population needs to be vaccinated in order to provide herd immunity against the coronavirus.

Blumi asks Elisheva if she should send a message to Ludmir saying that they know who he is and are wondering about the motivation behind his gifts. “Are you with us, Mr. Ludmir?” The young rabbi of the Bnei Tzion community felt very sympathetic toward the elderly yet energetic man. “Yes, yes, absolutely,” Ludmir said, with a broad smile that was meant to cover up the fact that he was not present at all. On his way, he had passed by Alex’s house — or rather, the house that had been Alex’s. He’d stopped the car at the side of the road. Yesterday, the buyers had closed on the house and the key had been handed over. He’d raised his eyes to the five-story structure, the building in which he had spent so much time in the recent years since Martha had passed away. He opened the car window and gazed at the house thoughtfully. In parting. You were everything to me, Alex had told him in the good days, the times when they could still converse normally and imagine that everything was still fine. When they could hope that those murky, foggy hours that separated them would not reoccur. You were a father to me — and mother, brothers and sisters, a wife and children. Everything. Alex was also the only survivor of his family, but he had always known where he had come from. The war had broken out when he’d been in his late teens, and he’d been over twenty by the time it had ended. It left him
totally alone in the world. He had never married or had a family, and in the community here, everyone was his relative. Martha would marvel about the close ties between the two — “You’re even closer to him than to Elisha, your cousin!” — but the reason for that was clear: Elisha wasn’t present. Seventeen years after they had established the shoe factory together, Elisha had sold his share to Joe and returned to Eretz Yisroel. Only his son, Daniel, had stayed behind in Perth. “Our only relative on the continent,” Martha would point out, because all her brothers and sisters and their families lived in America. Sometimes people make the strangest mistakes.” “Who was it who asked?” Ludmir inquired casually. “Now that I think of it, they didn’t even identify themselves. You know,” he chuckled jovially, “when people ask me about live people, I’m afraid to share information. Maybe the questioner is from the tax authority or some other nefarious entity. But when it comes to the deceased, there’s nothing anyone can do anymore!” He laughed aloud again. But can someone do something to their partners? The meeting concluded with gracious thanks, and Joe left the room, leaving the rabbi and the other two men to discuss the details of the new library. Daniel Ludmir would be very happy to take over management of his estate. Breathless, Joe reached his car, which was waiting for him in the shul’s underground parking lot. But he did not unlock it. At this hour of the day, the lot was virtually empty. In another few hours it would be time for Mincha, and then more cars would arrive, but for now, he was alone with the handful of vehicles and the gray cement walls, gaping at the distorted image of himself reflected in his car window. Yes, perhaps the time had come to bring Daniel into the picture. Joe took a deep breath, and discovered that putting his thought into words, even if only in his mind, had made his racing heartbeat slow somewhat. He opened the door of the car and climbed inside. True, he did not have children, to his regret, but that did not mean he had to face thoughts about the future alone. Daniel did not have to move here to Sydney; it was enough for him to come once a month, for a few days, to learn about the business. Managing a factory is a big deal, and combined with his international real estate dealings, Joe certainly could not just toss the keys and the books into someone’s hands without any advance notice. He would introduce Daniel to the company’s accountants, and to his investment adviser, and to— Ludmir’s hand, which was about to shift the gear into drive, stopped suddenly. No. He could not yet summon Daniel. Not before all his affairs in Eretz Yisroel were settled completely. The accountants could not tell Daniel now about all the questions and criticism that they
had directed at him over the past few months. Let them tell Daniel what they wanted when Joe was gone; he didn’t care. But as long as he was alive — and he hoped to remain so for years to come — everything needed to be kept secret. Daniel and the Ludmir family must not learn the truth. Instead of seeing him as their friendly, generous, beloved uncle, they would malign him as a swin-

His thoughts gave him no rest; they pursued him relentlessly and generated confusing dreams at night. A life of action can always drown out thoughts, dreams and musings, but life does not go on forever. And as Joe got older, he was internalizing this more and more. The elevator door opened, and Joe drove out of the parking lot. Before pulling into the stream of traffic outside, he decided he would just switch on his phone and get back to all those who had been trying to reach him these past couple of hours. He checked his missed calls: his personal accountant; the foreman on production floor A; Steve from the advertising agency; his real estate agent in Ohio; and another unfamiliar number on the screen. He had no idea why he chose to start with that last one. And once he started with it, everything else faded out of his consciousness. “Hello, Mr. Yosef, or Joe, Ludmir. My name is Blumi Hartstein, and I’m calling on behalf of the Potolsky family of Bnei Brak, including the grandfather, Mr. Yisroel Bentzion. They would like to inform you that they know everything, and they would like to make contact with you.”

Thanks, Mr. Kopel.” “Sure,” the gabbai said easily, although he kept a worried eye on the car as it drove into the parking lot elevator. Biden Delivers Inaugural Address THE PULSE: President Joe Biden delivered his inaugural
address on the steps of the Capitol on Wednesday, January 20. Biden focused on national unity and healing. He called on Americans to “see each other not as adversaries but as neighbors” and to “treat each other with dignity and respect.” Biden said that “Politics need not be a raging fire destroying everything in its path” and “every disagreement doesn’t have to be a cause for total war.” He stressed that “We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue, rural versus urban, conservative versus liberal. We can do this if we open our souls instead of hardening our hearts. If we show a little tolerance and humility.”

Yet hear me clearly: Disagreement must not lead to disunion.” Biden also led a moment of silent prayer for “those who lost their lives, for those they left behind, and for our country.” THE IMPACT: Biden’s call for unity will inevitably hit up against the hard wall of political reality. Biden has detailed an ambitious agenda for his first 100 days, which will undoubtedly face opposition from fiscal conservatives. Some of Biden’s executive actions, such as the cancellation of the Keystone XL pipeline, have already received political pushback. However, there is reason for optimism as both
Biden and Republican Senate Leader Mitch McConnell have a history of working together. Biden will need Republican support in the Senate. His experience working with members of the Republican Party may make him uniquely qualified to achieve some bipartisan consensus on the issues facing America.
Agudas Yisroel Calls for Senate Confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas as Secretary of Homeland Security THE PULSE: In a letter addressed to senators Rob Portman
(R-OH) and Gary Peters (D-MI) — the co-chairmen of the Senate’s Committee of Homeland Security and Government Affairs — Agudah’s vice president of governmental affairs, Abba Cohen, called on the Senate to expedite confirmation of Alejandro Mayorkas as secretary of Homeland Security. “We believe that Mr. Mayorkas is an excellent choice for the challenges that lie ahead,” wrote Rabbi Cohen, as well as that “We in the Jewish community, who live in the shadow of both foreign and homegrown dangers and have experienced an uptick in anti-Semitic incidents including murder and mayhem, have found Mr. Mayorkas to be a vital friend, partner and asset in helping to confront hate and in enhancing the security of our community institutions under DHS’s Nonprofit Security Grant Program.”

Prime Minister Netanyahu is set to dispatch Mossad Chief Yossi Cohen to Washington to discuss Israel’s position on Iran with Biden’s team. The talks with the Biden team are having an impact on Israeli elections as well. Gideon Sa’ar, the chief political rival to PM Netanyahu, accused the PM of putting bipartisan support for Israel at risk. Sa’ar told Associated Press that “I think I am in a better position than the prime minister to have an effective and true dialogue with President-elect Biden and his administration.”

This salad makes for a beautiful presentation. Feel free to exchange the fruits here for your favorite ones.
Fruit cups with a wholesome crunch and a splash of liqueur.
INGREDIENTS 1 can (29 oz.) pears
These cups are beautiful for Tu B’Shvat, as well as a great way to repurpose leftover Tu B’Shvat fruits for Shabbos dessert.
1 can (29 oz.) peaches
INGREDIENTS
6 yellow kiwis
Fruits of choice such as:
6 green kiwis
dragon fruit
3 mangoes
pomegranate arils
Arils of 1–2 pomegranates
papaya kiwi
TOPPING
starfruit
1 can (15 oz.) apricots
Triple sec liqueur
Nuts for topping (I used glazed pecans and slivered almonds)
GRANOLA CRUNCH
DIRECTIONS 1. Finely chop all fruits, keeping them separate. 2. To assemble, measure the circumference of the trifle bowl using measuring tape, and mark six equal sections using permanent marker. (Later, use a damp paper towel dipped in baking soda to remove the marker from the glass.) 3. Working with one type of fruit at a time, pile it into one section of the trifle bowl. (It’s easier to fill the bottom with each kind of fruit, and then work your way to the top.) You can use heavy duty silver foil bent in half and formed into a triangle to help keep the fruits in place, but it’s okay if some fruits in the center get mixed up. 4. Create a well in the center of the trifle bowl, and place a 10-ounce glass inside. 5. Once the trifle is assembled, use a knife to push any fruit that slipped into the wrong section back into place. 6. To prepare the dressing, blend the apricots with the syrup from the can. Pour this into the glass in the center. 7. Arrange the nuts around the perimeter of the trifle bowl. Note: For best taste, pour dressing over fruit immediately before serving.
3 cups quick-cooking oats 1½ cups shredded coconut ⅓ cup light olive oil ½ cup honey ¼ cup turbinado sugar ½ cup wheat germ ⅓ cup sesame seeds
While storebought granola doesn’t come close to the homemade version, if you’re short on time, it will also work well.
½ cup cold water 1 cup sliced almonds, slightly crushed DIRECTIONS To prepare the granola: 1. Preheat the oven to 225°. 2. Mix all ingredients except for the almonds. Place on a lined cookie sheet. Bake for half an hour. 3. Mix well, bringing granola from the edges to the center of the pan. 4. Bake for an additional 45 minutes, mixing every 15 minutes. 5. Add the almonds and bake for another 20 minutes. To assemble: Layer cubes of fruit in individual cups. Top with granola and a splash of triple sec liqueur. Note: Depending on the amount of granola consumed, there may be a shailah regarding the bracha. Ask your dayan.

PRETZEL CRUNCH FRUIT SALAD This salad is always a hit! I’ve made it for simchos and melaveh malkahs to rave reviews. The cashews add flavor and crunch but can be omitted for a nut-free version with amazing results.
CRUNCHY PRETZEL TOPPING 1 cup pretzel twist nuggets 1½ T. sugar 1 tsp. water ½ tsp. oil SALAD 4 small Golden Delicious apples Olive oil, for brushing 1½ T. brown sugar 8 oz. Italian blend (Pos’tiv) 8 dried apricots, quartered 3 T. craisins 2–3 T. diced red onion ⅓ cup cashews, optional DRESSING 2 T. oil 2 T. honey 2 T. lemon juice ¼ tsp. salt DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. 2. Crush the pretzels gently with a rolling pin. Place them in a strainer, and discard the small crumbs. 3. Combine the sugar, water and oil in a 9x13” pan. 4. Bake until the sugar melts, approximately 4 to 5 minutes. Add the pretzel pieces and mix well to coat. Bake for an additional 5 to 6 minutes. (Note: Pretzels will not be completely coated.) 5. Raise the oven heat to 375°. 6. Core and slice the apples. Brush them with olive oil and sprinkle with brown sugar. Bake them for 15 to 18 minutes, then allow to cool. 7. To assemble the salad, mix all salad ingredients in a bowl. Combine the dressing ingredients. Top the salad with dressing and pretzel crunch before serving.

The sun beating down on the Tzefas beis hachaim was relentless, and the intolerable thirst on this Tzom Gedalia day an adversary all of its own. But accompanied by a friend and my twelve-year-old grandson Meir, my son Yossi was in Tzefas on a mission: to find the kever of Zeide Avraham Yosef.

story began some months earlier, when I was in Eretz Yisroel for a visit and attended a sheva brachos in Bnei Brak. Sitting next to me was a man by the name of R’ Shimon Fogel, whom I knew only in passing. But what I did know about him was that he’s a brilliant fellow, and a tremendous source of historical and genealogical information. “Moshe, you know you have a grandfather buried in Tzefas,” he said. I was surprised. “No, I don’t know that.” “Yes, your grandfather R’ Avraham Yosef Halevi, son of R’ Yehuda, is lying in the Tzefas beis hachaim,” he said. “I believe he c an be found next to the Be’er Mayim Chaim.”

about our chances of actually finding the kever. “I doubt it’s accessible,” he said. “Entrances are blocked up, and the maaros are dark and filled with rubble.” He drummed his fingers on the

with absolute certainty about our Zeide Avraham Yosef filled exactly one sentence in a sefer written by my paternal great-grandfather, my father’s father’s father. The sefer mentioned a zeide Avraham Yosef who lived in Eretz Yisroel, and separately mentioned another zeide by the name of Yehuda — but we had no idea that Yehuda was the father of Avraham Yosef, nor that Avraham Yosef was the father of my great-great-grandfather. Before this revelation, we simply knew that these two zeides were somewhere along the line stretching from the Taz, zt”l, all the way to myself, ben acher ben. “This is unbelievable,” I said at last. “How can we find the kever?” His response disappointed me. Because despite his wealth of knowledge, Mr. Fogel didn’t seem very optimistic

table. “I’m pretty sure the exact spot would be really, really hard to find.” But I wasn’t easily deterred. “What if I hire a crew to look for it?” Mr. Fogel shrugged. “Then maybe they’ll manage to find it. Zeide Avraham Yosef was my great-great-greatgrandfather, and difficulties notwithstanding, we were going to find his kever. Our flight home was scheduled for soon after the sheva brachos, which gave me no chance to look around in the beis hachaim during this visit to Eretz Yisroel. But even after my return home, I stayed in touch with Mr. Fogel and kept adding to the steadily growing pile of documents and records related to our search. One fascinating piece of historical evidence came from a census of sorts prepared for philanthropist Moses Montefiore at his request, which listed the members of the Kosover kehillah in Tzefas and included our zeide Avraham Yosef. Mr. Fogel added that Avraham Yosef was a respected Yid in the community, hence the reason he was buried in a more respectable spot near the Be’er Mayim Chaim, and not in a regular plot within the chelka of the Kosover chassidim. A half year passed. Soon it was Rosh Hashanah, and my two sons as well as a couple of my grandsons traveled to Bnei Brak to spend yom tov with their Rebbe. Immediately before yom tov, my grandson Shalom attempted to search for the kever, but he couldn’t locate it — and we’d soon learn why. Rosh Hashanah passed, and on Tzom Gedalia, my son Yossi, his son Meir, and a close friend left for the beis

Surprisingly, the interior of the cave, which was shaped like a horseshoe, was lined with subcaves along each of the three walls. As instructed, they began their search at the left side of the cave. Meir — who at twelve years of age was chosen for his small size — crawled into the first sub-cave and looked around, aided by a powerful headlamp strapped around his head. The maareh was stifling, the air musky, and webs hung from every corner. But Meir searched out the small matzeivos within and carefully wiped away the years of dust and grime hiding the inscriptions. “We’re looking for the names Avraham Yosef and Yehuda,” Yossi said. “And the date Ches Sivan. Avraham Yosef ben Yehuda, Ches Sivan.” Examining one matzeivah after the next, Meir soon admitted defeat in the small subcave and moved on to the next. And the next. And the next. Disappointment filled the space, but Meir pressed onward. Hands and pants now nothing short of filthy, he made his way around the larger maareh. Soon he was at the right side, inspecting the matzeivos in each sub-cave along that opposite wall. But there was no sign of an Avraham Yosef, no remembrance of our zeide in any of the smaller caves. Finally, there was only one sub-cave left. But Meir, covered in sweat and thoroughly exhausted, was done. He was hot, frustrated and thirsty. “There’s no way he’s in there,” he said, motioning to the pile of rocks marking the opening. “We’re all the way at the right side now, and you can barely get in there!” And he was right. Blocked with other kevarim, the mouth of the sub-cave was tiny — there was no way an adult could comfortably fit inside — and how could the estimation of the kever’s location be so far off? But Yossi and his friend urged Meir to try once more. “There’s only this last cave left,” Yossi said. “Let’s just do one more!” Meir sighed and turned back to the wall of the maareh. Hunkering down, he squeezed through the tiny opening to the cave. Working slowly along the right side of the maareh, he once again moved from matzeivah to matzeivah and wiped each one down, reading the inscriptions aloud as he went.
All at once, the fivegenerational gap slid closed.

The inscription was covered with layers upon layers of dust, and the words were barely legible. Meir crept closer and shone his light directly on the stone marker. “Alef,” he called out as he began wiping the grime from the inscription. “Veis.” A pause. “Reish.”

Tatty, it’s him!” There was some scraping and scrambling as Yossi, propelled by sheer emotion, managed to squeeze himself into the tiny space. He quickly spotted the small matzeivah. It was lying flat, as it had probably been lying for almost a

I picked up immediately. “Hello?” “Tatty, we found it!” My heart jumped, but I was so emotional, so moved, that I couldn’t talk. “Tatty?” “Yes,” I managed. “We found it!” Yossi repeated. I could hear the excitement in his voice. “We almost gave up, but then Meir squeezed into this little cave, and there it was!” I’d known they were heading to the beis hachaim that day, and my eyes fell on the candle flickering on the counter nearby, l’ilui nishmas R’ Avraham Yosef Halevi ben R’ Yehuda. With much siyata d’Shmaya, they’d found what they were searching for. All at once, the five-generational gap slid closed. We’d found the zeide. Exuberant at the news, I quickly contacted someone in Tzefas who was involved in the beis hachaim’s upkeep. After telling him our story, I hired him to hang a plaque near the maareh, in that trademark blue known to everyone who’s ever visited, engraved with the zeide’s name. Additionally, he was to darken the words on the matzeivah and set it upright so it would be easily visible to anyone peering into the small space. From that point on, any family member visiting Eretz Yisroel had another reason to visit, another destination where they could murmur a few kapitlech of Tehillim. And perhaps even more significant than finding the actual kever of an ancestor, our family has found proof of our roots and a piece of our history, all hiding in the rocky hills of Tzefas.

But we know that kol ma d’avid Rachmana l’tav avid – although we don’t understand, this too is for the good. The defense will now appeal the case to the New Jersey Supreme Court. Being that only a minimal number of cases are accepted at the state Supreme Court, foremost Supreme Court attorneys, who have the recognition and respect of the Court, will be joining the legal team and be’ezras Hashem Yisborach the Court will accept the appeal and right the injustice being perpetrated against our father. Understandably, this - coupled with the legal costs that will be incurred with the ongoing legal proceedings in the lower court - will amount to an exorbitant sum of money. As hard as it is for us to turn to you for help again, it is too dreadful for us to consider the alternative. The tzibur’s support has been vital for us until now, and it is only with your help that we will be able to continue this legal battle. The deadline to file the initial appeal to the state Supreme Court is February 2nd. Please continue to stand together with us through this daunting ordeal. GENIPAP The genipap tree towers above man at the height of 60 to 110 feet. This tropical tree flourishes in the hot, humid conditions of several South American countries where it is prized for more than just its consumable offerings. Though the slightly sour genipap fruit is used in food and drink, it has a long history of being used for medicinal purposes, as well. When the fruit is broken open, the flesh oxidizes upon exposure, turning a bluish-black color. The genipap fruit has been historically used to create dyes for clothing, utensils and more. Recent innovations have led South American chefs to experiment with the fruit to color everything from bread to pudding, surprising many with the indigo color that can be achieved in the most unlikely of foods.

BREADFRUIT A gluten-free, knead-free “bread” can be found across tropical regions such as Jamaica, Hawaii, Sri Lanka and South Asia, hiding in the trees above. The breadfruit is starchy, with a taste and texture similar to bread or potatoes. It’s a staple food in these regions and can be cooked in many ways. Because of its mild flavor, the breadfruit is very versatile and can be used in sweet or savory dishes. In Jamaica, the fruit is commonly scored and placed upright over an open fire. NONI Years ago, a product called Tahitian Noni Juice was marketed as being the cure for multiple medical conditions running the gamut from clinical depression to diabetes. Without scientific evidence, it was illegal to promote these claims. Studies on the juice of the noni fruit have swung both ways, vouching for antioxidant activity and pointing out its potential to be toxic to the liver. At the moment, noni isn’t the most sought-after fruit. And should people actually seek one out, they’d probably run the other direction once they were holding one in their hand! Said to smell akin to Limburger cheese and other malodorous things, the taste of this fruit isn’t much better. One of the nicknames of the noni fruit is “the famine fruit,” for though the fruit grows in abundance in some places in Australia and Southeast Asia, few would eat it willingly, save for dire situations. For those who are especially intent on pursuing the noni’s potential health properties, they wisely mix it with other fruit juices to mask its smell and taste. If you’re ever offered a noni, consider yourself warned.

DURIAN A little less offensive to the olfactory senses is the durian. This large and spiky fruit that calls Thailand and Malaysia home boasts a custard-like consistency. The taste is a unique combination of sweet and savory, with hints of onion and garlic in a super-sweet base. While Western palates might not favor this combination, the fruit is beloved by many in its places of origin. Hotels there, however, are usually not fans of the fruit, as its smell — which has been compared to rotting onions or sewage — can linger for days. For this reason, a ban on this fruit is in place in some hotels and on public transportation.

R AMBUTAN Southeast Asia brings us another fascinating fruit, the rather odd but very delicious rambutan. “Rambut” means “hair” in Malay and is the perfect description for this fruit that looks as if it needs a brush. The inside of the fruit is floral-smelling and similar to grapes in texture. Its taste is very sweet and pleasant.

PAWPAW Indigenous to America, the pawpaw fruit would fool nearly anyone with its tropical aroma. It is a delicious treat that has been described as having a combination of mango, pineapple and banana flavors. Due to its creamy consistency, it is also known as “the custard apple.” Thomas Jefferson and George Washington were both known to be huge fans of the fruit, and frankly, most people who try them are too. Unfortunately, due to their short shelf life, they aren’t really grown on a commercial level. The good news is, traipsing around the woods just might lead you to discover a pawpaw tree in your path! Depending on where you shop, these supplies — especially the mini frames — may vary. The mini frames I used are actually hard plastic napkin rings! They’re about 1” x 1½” in size. You can also use flat wooden circles (as shown in the supplies photo) or anything small and flat, and glue the photos onto the center. For the branches, you can use ones you find outside or buy some at a local florist. You will need thin, dry branches.

Let’s get started! 1. Remove the glass and backing of the large frame. 2. Arrange the branches to form a tree. You may want to take a picture of the tree you just created so you can use it as a reference when you glue the tree together. 3. Turn over the frame, and begin gluing the branches in place using hot glue. The first branch will be the “trunk,” and it should extend from one end of the frame to the other. 4. Play around with the arrangement of the next few branches until you get a pretty tree with space to hang your mini frames. Glue one end of each branch to the “trunk” and the other end to the frame. 5. Turn over the large frame so it’s right side up again. 6. Using the paint marker, write your family name or “Our Family” on the wooden plaque. Glue it to the bottom of the frame with hot glue. 7. Glue photos of your family members in place in the mini frames. 8. Arrange the mini frames to fill the family tree. 9. Glue the photos that are at the bottom to the inside or the back of the frame. 10. Attach a thread to the rest of the mini frames. 11. Tie each mini frame to the appropriate branch. At this point you can add some mini branches to accommodate all of the photos. 12. Add some flowers to your beautiful family tree.
Now you can hang the frame on the wall and admire your work of art!

I wish I could tell you that I became superhuman, rising to every situation and meeting each challenge I faced head-on. Unfortunately, since this isn’t a work of fiction, I can’t do that. After moving to Boro Park, I started working at Gesher Yehuda, a special education program, first as a master teacher and then as educational director. Now that I had assistants and other staff working for me, taking bathroom breaks became a bit easier, but not by much. I loved every one of my students and was committed to giving them my best. If I ever had to choose between my needs or theirs, my students always won, hands down. As time passed, ignoring my symptoms and being there for others became so ingrained as a habit that I barely noticed that I was doing it. Have you ever tried dieting? toast and white rice. What if you had so little energy that you kept reaching for more toast and rice to get you through the day, or even the next hour? What if that low-energy state was your default setting, and you reached for starchy snacks every couple of hours, never realizing that those snacks, while giving you short bursts of something vaguely resembling energy, were actually your undoing? Are you starting to get the picture? This was the story of my life for years. As I kept attempting to compensate for my lack of energy with the very snacks that were making me sick in the first place, I kept adding on pounds, but I could never get my IBS to cooperate with any diet I tried. Then there was every nutritionist’s and medical professional’s favorite go-to advice: exercise. It’s an excellent theory, with so much scientific evidence underscoring its value. Nevertheless, memories of my attempts are almost comical. Almost. I would plan to go walking with a friend, and actually begin walking with her, only to be doubled over with stomach cramps a few blocks in. Walking down Eleventh Avenue at seven in the morning had its perks, but access to bathrooms was not one of them. During regular business hours, I knew every place in Boro Park that allowed customers to use their bathrooms, knew where I could just walk in, and where I had to buy something first, but early morning walks were out. I tried joining aerobics or exercise classes, but even the low-impact classes were beyond my physical capabilities. I would stand there, watching senior citizens keeping up with exercises I could do only in my dreams, and once again, I wondered what was wrong with me. I even made some feeble efforts to take care of myself emotionally. I have a thirst for knowledge and love listening to shiurim. I attended some lectures at Shalhevet, but found myself unable to focus when my stomach demanded its
due. If it wasn’t my stomach, it was the severe joint pain I experienced. Sitting in one place for a long time was excruciating, and the pain made it nearly impossible for me to hear what was being said. As for friends, I rarely, if ever, spent time with them. My energy was a finite resource, and it was more than consumed by taking care of my family and home, and by working to support my family. I never wanted to be that person, the one who constantly kvetches about aches and pains, so I never told my friends what I was going through. Oh, the pitfalls of pride! Who knows if, by sharing with others, somebody could have shed some light on my suffering, or at the very least, been there for me when I so desperately needed support? I’m not proud to admit this, but as the years passed with no answers and no relief in sight, I pretty much gave up trying. I began to completely negate my own needs. I put all the energy I had, plus plenty that I didn’t, into my family first, and then into my students. I stopped making any effort to take care of myself, as it seemed pointless. Please don’t try this; I can promise you that it isn’t worth it. I know that I am a wonderful mother and a fantastic special educator, but I believe that I could have been so much more than that for so many people if I had made time for, and invested effort into, self-care. My biggest regret and deepest shame, however, is that while I always maintained my close relationship with the Ribbono Shel Olam, and continued davening for my family and my students, I stopped davening for myself. I had completely given up on ever getting any sort of relief, and stopped expecting any. I thought then that I had achieved an admirable level of acceptance, but looking back, I know that what I was really feeling was hopelessness and despair.

It’s the dead of winter. If there’s anything coating the trees, it’s snow or crystals… yet we’re celebrating the “birthday” of those trees! Tu B’Shvat marks the new fruit-bearing cycle for trees in Eretz Yisroel. This cycle begins four months into the local rainy season, the length of time it takes for the water to saturate the soil and nurture the trees so they will be able to yield fruit come spring.
IS IT A FRUIT?
GRAFTING Pick your complete dessert off a single tree! The Fruit Salad Tree can grow a number of different fruits of the same family at once. You can find oranges on one branch, grapefruits on another, and lemons or limes on a third. Other common combinations would be multi-apple trees, or stone trees growing peaches, plums, nectarines and apricots.
Have you ever seen a banana tree? It is tall and sturdy, yet we make a Borei Pri Ha’adamah on its soft yellow fruits. In halachah, fruits that grow on a perennial plant — one that lives for two years or more — are Borei Pri Ha’eitz, while those that grow on an annual plant get the bracha of vegetables. At the end of the season, the banana stalk dies and a new shoot grows in its place, making the banana a classic example of a fruit-vegetable!
Many halachic shailos arise from such grafted trees. - Are we permitted to create them? - May we eat their fruits? - Can we make a Shehecheyanu on their fruits? - In Eretz Yisroel, should terumos and maasros be taken from each fruit? The majority of trees today are grafted. Some are grafted within the same species, which is permitted. But crossbred trees of different species are problematic. They fall under the issur of kilayim. A halachically forbidden tree may not be watered or nurtured. Most opinions rule that it should be uprooted (preferably by a non-Jew).

Terumos and maasros are tithes that must be taken from fruit grown in Eretz Yisroel, even in the present day. Without the Beis Hamikdash or proper taharah, these would-be gifts to the Kohen and Levi (or, to be eaten in Yerushalayim) are mostly wrapped in plastic and discarded properly. The kedusha of maaser sheini is transferred to a coin that is not used.

CAN WE CHOP IT DOWN? Perhaps you want to extend your house, clear the woods for a larger play area, or chase those squirrels off your property. You want those trees gone! But if they yield fruit, you may need to cancel your plans. The pasuk warns us that when at war, we may not destroy the enemy’s [fruit] trees (Devarim 20:19). The Torah is protecting us from causing bal tashchis. Uprooting fruit trees is considered uncalled-for destruction. Still want the trees out? Take your specific shailah to your rav, as the practical application of this prohibition is very individual. On a deeper level, the takeaway is that we should be careful not to waste our time, talents or other resources — or anyone else’s, either.
THE THREE-YEAR WAIT It’s an exercise in self-control, highlighting a difference between Adam and Chava and Klal Yisroel, according to the Midrash. After planting a fruit tree, we must wait three years before enjoying the fruits of our labor. While in Eretz Yisroel, the mitzvah of ORLAH is d’Oraisa; in chutz la’aretz, it is halacha l’Moshe miSinai. That is why the location of the orchard triggers certain differences in the way the fruit are handled. Fruits grown in the fourth year have the kedusha of NETA REVA’I. During the time of the Beis Hamikdash, these fruits were brought to Yerushalayim to be eaten by their owners. Today, people transfer the kedusha to a coin, similar to the ritual used for maaser sheini, and then the fruits may be enjoyed. Calculations regarding maaser of produce and neta reva’i are based on Tu B’Shvat, the new year for trees.
BLESSING THE SAPLINGS Do you remember the truck loaded with fruit trees slowly parading down the streets this past Nissan? With everyone stuck in their homes, some activists wanted to make sure we all had the opportunity to say Birkas Ha’ilanos! When the first buds of fruit begin to flower on the trees, we stop, appreciate and thank Hashem with this once-a-year bracha. All winter long, the trees stand dry and barren. Then spring arrives, and suddenly, the tired trunks come alive with fresh flora. The Ben Ish Chai comments that this renewal of nature reminds and encourages us to use the tools Hashem gave us to renew ourselves.
“Fruits are a wonderful opportunity to gain emunah and ahavas Hashem.” Rav Avigdor Miller, zt”l, often pointed out the nifla’os haBorei inherent in fruits and the trees they grow on. When fruits begin to grow, they are all green at first, to blend in with the leaves on the tree. Once they are ready to be eaten, this camouflage disappears as they develop the attractive colors that embellish their appealing “packaging.” The fruits hold on tight to the branches until they ripen. Only then do they become loose enough to tumble down with just a slight shake of the tree, so humans can come pick them up. (The esrog is a notable exception, holding on to the tree until it’s picked.) Inside the fruit lies the seed — containing the chromosomes for another whole tree! This tiny parcel contains all it needs to produce the leaves, sap, bark and flowers of an identical sapling. “Nobody can dispute this proof that there’s a Creator,” Rabbi Miller concludes.
