Widows, orphans, and poor families have serious hang-ups about Purim. Everyone around them is getting ready to celebrate, but they’re afraid they won’t be part of the fun. Many will celebrate their first Purim alone, hashing and rehashing memories of last Purim, when COVID lurked beneath the joy. Now they’re left with huge, aching gaps – in their fridges, around their tables, and in their broken hearts.

(Re: Must-Try Must, Issue 73) The feature about must-making was so well done and well written. I’d like to add an idea I incorporate for maximizing the yield at a time when we prepare so many homemade foods and beverages. Just like professional winemakers who make yayan sheini — second wines — I do the same with must, using the leftover pulp to make “must sheini.” To make your own, take all the pulp left over in the colander after the dripping process, and add sugar and water to it (one part pulp to two-to-three parts water, and sugar to taste — approximately a half a cup to each one-gallon mixture). Refreeze the mixture and continue the process mentioned in Issue 73 (steps 5 to 9). It is important to mark the bottles with “#2” or “must sheini” to differentiate them from the yield of the initial must process. One should also ask their rav which is the right bracha for the beverage (Hagafen or Shehakol). Wishing everyone a kosheren Pesach. M.K.
PROTECT THE PROJECT (Re: Must-Try Must, Issue 73) The must tutorial is so beautiful! And I loved looking at the breathtaking photos of vineyards in this same issue. Reading about the must-making process, I would suggest to anyone trying it to place a plastic tablecloth over the entire work area during The Boro Park View welcomes your comments, feedback and letters. (Re: A Serving of Elegance, Issue 73) While the yapchik recipe looked delicious, the information in the introduction wasn’t accurate. The European version of cholent is not yapchik, but chicken soup and kasha, and that is what is distributed at the Skvere tish. It is in Spink that yapchik is distributed during Shabbos morning kiddush. A Reader
A SUGGESTION AND A QUESTION (Re: Boggle, Issue 72) I’d like to suggest an idea. It would be great if you can put a small Boggle board of the previous week’s game near the winner’s lists so we can find the words and see what we missed. I also wanted to inquire about the nine-letter word on Issue 72’s Boggle board. I couldn’t find the word, and didn’t see it listed the following week. Y.F THE BORO PARK VIEW RESPONDS: The word was meant to be olfactory, but there was a typo on the Boggle board. We apologize for the inconvenience this caused to our Boggle fans.

(Re: Your Voice, Issue 73) Dear letter-writer from last week, Thank you for your proposition to limit the junk food in each mishloach manos package prepared for the kids, but may I ask why your six-year-old receives nineteen packages? I’m all for limiting the expense and the food, but perhaps before we make a townwide change, which really is not in anyone’s control, the first thing for
you to do is limit how many mishloach manos you allow your children to exchange. I think that is a great place to start! Another Mother
YOUR VOICE A COMMUNITY INITIATIVE During the recent snowstorm season, I’ve noticed how difficult and dangerous it is for people to climb over the snow piles blocking crosswalks on most street corners. This is especially troublesome for the elderly and those with young children, strollers or shopping carts. I am seeking volunteers who are willing to shovel a path at a specific street corner, typically the one they live on. This initiative is for residents of Boro Park, Kensington and Flatbush. In addition to its being a great mitzvah, each participant will be entered into a raffle to win $100. Five winners will be drawn each year on Rosh Chodesh Adar. If multiple family members participate in shoveling, each one may enter the raffle. Please reach out to shoveldouble@gmail. com or call 917-685-1493 between 6 and 9 p.m. Please provide your name, address, phone number, and let us know which street corners you can shovel. Also please clarify if you will shovel the two corners without crossing the avenue, or all four corners. Tizku l’mitzvos, A Concerned Neighbor

PARSHAS TETZAVEH A Stone on His Heart
Much significance is attributed to the bigdei kehunah, with full depictions of the materials and styles used. When describing the choshen, the pasuk says that the Urim v’Tumim should be placed in the choshen so that they will be on Aharon’s heart when he comes before Hashem (Shemos 28:30). On a simple level, this pasuk explains exactly where the choshen should be placed — on Aharon’s heart. But the Be’er Mayim Chaim points out a deeper meaning. What is the crucial message behind Aharon’s wearing the “Choshen Hamishpat” on his heart?

IT WAS AFTER THE SEUDAH on Friday night when a yungerman knocked at Reb Shlomo Eisen’s door. Reb Shlomo, who was known throughout Yerushalayim as one of the greatest poskim of the previous generation, immediately detected a sense of worry on the young man’s face. “Come inside,” the Rav said. He seated his guest at the table and rushed to bring him a steaming cup of tea. Finally he inquired, “What brings you here?” The young man spilled his tale of woe: As he and his newlywed wife had been eating the seudah, he noticed a shailah in the chicken bone in his soup. It was broken, and from the coloring and look of the bone, the young man was questioning if it was kosher. If it had been broken prior to shechitah, it could potentially render the entire chicken treif. “If so,” the man fretted, “what is the status of the rest of our Shabbos food? The other half of the chicken is bubbling on the blech inside the cholent! And what is the status of our pots and dishes?” After hearing the pertinent details, Reb Shlomo began analyzing every aspect of the shailah in depth. They discussed all of the prospects, such as under which conditions such a chicken would be permitted and what would cause it to be unacceptable. As the two got dragged deeper into conversation, Reb Shlomo realized that the yungerman was a genuine talmid chacham. They began talking in learning on other topics, too, with Reb Shlomo enjoying the back-andforth immensely. This went on for quite a while, and neither man noticed that more than half an hour had elapsed. In an interesting twist, the Rav turned to the yungerman.
When the Rav realized the severity of the matter, he first took pains to ensure the couple would have where to eat.

Did You Know? Rabbeinu Bachya points out that the names of the shevatim, written on the twelve stones of the choshen, totaled 72 letters. These letters corresponded to the 72 daytime hours of the first six days of creation — and to the 72-letter name of Hashem. This teaches us that Hashem supports the entire creation in the zechus of the twelve shevatim.

This approach is the message behind the choshen’s placement, according to the Be’er Mayim Chaim. Aharon, who was commanded to answer the shailos of Klal Yisroel, needed to place the choshen on his heart to remind him to put every Yid “on his heart” when answering questions. By extension, a rav, posek or gadol in the position of resolving the queries of a fellow Yid infuses heart into the din much like the Choshen Hamishpat that was “al lev Aharon.”

“Perhaps I can invite you and your wife to the Shabbos seudah tomorrow morning?” The yungerman was caught by surprise at this extraordinary invitation, which was too good to refuse! He replied that it would be a true honor and turned to leave, excited to tell his wife about their new plans. As he stood at the door, the yungerman suddenly remembered why he had come. “Before I go, rebbi, tell me — what about my shailah? Is the chicken kosher?” “Oh,” the Rav responded, “you’re right. From your description, it indeed seems the chicken is not acceptable. But it doesn’t matter right now!” He waved away the yungerman’s concern. “You’ll be my guest tomorrow in either case, so you don’t need to rely on your cholent for the seudah!” The yungerman left the Rav’s home with mixed emotions. True, his food was treif and he would have to deal with the pots and dishes after Shabbos, but he felt considerably lighter than when he’d come. He was also fully cognizant of the Rav’s kind approach. When the Rav realized the severity of the matter, he first took pains to ensure the couple would have where to eat, and only afterward did he render his ruling. When a rav answers a shailah, it isn’t enough to have the halacha clear; first he is obliged to put the questioner into his own heart and empathize with their plight. What situation does the questioner face? What obstacles is he up against? Only after envisioning the entire picture along with a satisfactory resolution should he respond to the question.

COVID-19 Curtails Purim Celebrations From Coast to Coast While Purim 2020 may have been the last bastion of normalcy for many, this year’s celebrations may be markedly different, with rabbanim nationwide canceling events and customary collections, and calling for more muted celebrations to prevent further spread of the virus and a possible chillul Hashem. The Asbury Park Press reported that Lakewood’s Beth Medrash Govoha canceled its Purim mesibah, an event that normally attracts thousands, for the first time in 80 years. A kol koreh bearing the signatures of a dozen Lakewood rabbanim said that chagigas should be kept small and discouraged houseto-house collections for mosdos and charitable causes, while also calling on area residents to increase their learning, davening and tzedakah on Purim. Additionally, the rabbanim called for Purim night shiurim to be held in every yeshivah, shul and kehillah, with optional in-house parties taking place thereafter. “This would help everyone celebrate Purim with significant joy and happiness, with songs and music, each person in their own place in their beis midrash and their neighborhood, instead of wandering from place to place and neighborhood to neighborhood,” read the announcement. In Los Angeles, 23 rabbanim sent out a similar message, noting that they would not be continuing their annual custom of having both local and out-of-state bachurim going door to door to collect for their yeshivos. Los Angeles residents were urged to increase their own donations to mosdos of Torah and chesed wherever possible, acts that will hopefully bring about additional simcha and light to Purim. A day later, rabbanim of the Midwest Agudas Yisroel Council of Synagogue issued a statement on behalf of its Chicago rabbanim, noting that like so much else that has transpired over the last twelve months, Purim celebrations would have to be modified because of the pandemic. With the usual tzedakah visits to private homes suspended, a special fund is being created on behalf of the yeshivos that usually fundraise in Chicago, and the community was asked to show its support for these Torah mosdos. A Wednesday letter released by the Vaad Harabanim of Baltimore took things a step further, also calling on shuls to hold multiple Megillah readings to limit the number of people at each one and emphasizing the community’s ongoing commitment to mandatory mask-wearing and social distancing. Acknowledging that there are many area residents who have been isolating for months for health reasons, the Vaad called on Baltimoreans to use the mitzvah of mishloach manos to reach out to those who may be struggling with loneliness. “The true power of Purim lies in the achdus of Klal Yisroel,” wrote Rabbi Yaakov Hopfer, president of the Vaad. “In a time

of such fragmentation, let us each do our own small part in bringing people closer together.”
Eretz Yisroel May Deny Entry to Foreign Post-Pesach Travelers, Warns Advisory A global travel advisory has been issued cautioning the many students, couples and young families in Eretz Yisroel who are expecting to spend Pesach abroad that their return may be in jeopardy because of the pandemic. A joint release issued by Rabbi Zvi Gluck of Amudim, Rabbi Paysach Freedman of Chaim V’Chessed and Rabbi Nechemya Malinowitz of the Yeshiva and Seminary Coalition for Bnei Chul explained that with all foreigners currently banned from entering Eretz Yisroel, there is no way to predict whether anyone will be allowed back into the country after Pesach. This problem could potentially affect all foreign travelers and includes married and single individuals, as well as those holding student visas. Another potential concern is the possibility that only those who received COVID-19 vaccines in Eretz Yisroel or have Israeli documentation proving that they recovered from the virus may be allowed entry. Advocacy efforts to assist Pesach travelers are continuing with the United States Embassy, elected officials and other government agencies all doing their part to help. A Sunday letter from Mir Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Eliezer Yehuda Finkel urged bachurim not to fly home for Pesach because of the possibility that they may not be allowed to return, reported Yeshiva World News. Rabbi Finkel quoted Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky’s recommendation that bachurim remain in yeshivah, albeit with the permission of their parents, and said that arrangements would be made for sedarim, yom tov meals and bein hazmanim in the yeshivah. “As we approach the days of Nissan, I am calling on the talmidei yeshivah from abroad,” wrote Rabbi Finkel. “We are in a period when we don’t know what the next day will bring. And according to the experts, apparently, at this point there is no chance at all that foreigners will be able to return to Eretz Yisroel in the near future — and this after the upheaval, enormous efforts and bittul Torah last year to return the yeshivah bachurim from abroad. Miracles aren’t performed every day and the situation is much worse now. And who knows what another day will bring? “And, therefore, I request that bachurim remain in yeshivah during this period and not leave beis chayeinu at this difficult time. And who knows if new talmidim will come if the veteran ones leave? What will be with the Torah? A wise man anticipates the future and bears the responsibility for the continuation of the yoke of Torah.”

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Cuomo Announces Multiple Openings as Nursing Home Fallout Continues Growing Just months after releasing a book on his leadership lessons on COVID-19 and receiving a prestigious award for his daily press conferences, Governor Andrew Cuomo has found himself in the media spotlight, this time facing accusations instead of adulation. CNBC reported that the chorus of voices in Albany looking to strip Cuomo of the emergency powers he was granted at the start of the pandemic has grown louder, with nine Assembly Democrats signing a letter supporting the move. The United States Department of Justice is conducting a criminal investigation into New York’s underreporting of the state’s coronavirus-related nursing home deaths. The number of fatalities now tops 15,000, while for months, Albany had been placing the number at approximately 8,500. Talk of impeachment is also echoing in the state legislature, with Fox News reporting that the Assembly’s Republican leader, Representative Will Barclay, said that he hopes to set up a bipartisan impeachment committee that would spend 60 days investigating whether Cuomo’s nursing home coverup involved any criminal actions. “Obviously you have the Eastern District of New York U.S. attorney looking into this,” said Barclay. “We have the FBI looking into it. And there’s no reason the state legislature can’t also begin to look into it.” But while the news for the governor was bad, there was reason for optimism among state residents. Citing falling COVID-19 numbers and rising vaccination rates, Cuomo announced that nursing home visitation will once again be permitted statewide. According to the governor, all nursing home residents and staff members at every home across New York have been offered the COVID-19 vaccine, with 73% of nursing home residents vaccinated to date. Department of Health guidelines will allow visitors who receive a negative result on a rapid COVID-19 test into nursing homes, with tests being provided by the state at no charge. Cuomo advised day camp and sleepaway camp operators to begin working on their summer plans, which will be subject to Department of Health guidelines that will be issued in the coming weeks. The governor had more specific details for indoor entertainment centers, which will be allowed to open on March 26 at 25% capacity, and outdoor amusement parks, which will be allowed to open on March 9 at 33% capacity. Facilities will have to submit reopening plans to their local health departments and collect contact information from all customers for potential contact tracing, with face coverings, social distancing and masks required for customers and staff. Other requirements will include health screenings for all patrons, frequent cleaning and disinfection of all high-touch surfaces, increased staffing to ensure compliance, and enhanced air filtration and ventilation for all indoor areas.

“In New York, we base our decisions on the science and data and adjust as the virus adjusts,” said Cuomo. “With continued decreases in the infection and hospitalization rates, we have been able to take steps toward beginning our post-COVID recovery, and we are excited to now be in a place where we can bring back our recreational industries with safety protocols in place.” Also on a positive note, Cuomo upped the in-person dining limits at New York City restaurants, raising the number from 25% capacity to 35% as of February 26, bringing eateries in the five boroughs closer in line with those in other parts of the state that have been allowed to operate at 50% of their normal capacity. The governor blamed the city’s higher density, as well as its history, for the more stringent regulations. According to Gothamist, 140,000 restaurant jobs have been lost because of the pandemic, and thousands of eateries may not survive. While NYC Hospitality Alliance Executive Director Andrew Rigie called on the governor to allow indoor dining at 50% capacity, others have been more hesitant. A server at one Brooklyn eatery who asked to be identified only as Rebecca said that she wishes that the return of indoor dining would have been postponed for a few more weeks because of health concerns. “All of us feel very let down by the state and the federal government, and we’d like to see at least another month, maybe a little longer, until a lot more people have been vaccinated and to find out more about these variants,” she said.
Masbia Doubling Size of Boro Park and Flatbush Locations as Pesach Nears The pre-Pesach season has always been a busy time for Masbia, but with a 500% increase in demand because of the pandemic, plans are underway to significantly increase the size of both the Boro Park and Flatbush locations. Boro Park 24 reported that Masbia of Boro Park will be renting three floors of an adjacent building, while Masbia of Flatbush will be renting two floors in a storefront located just yards away from its existing location. The moves will allow both locations to double their square footage. The pandemic has had Masbia shifting from its soup kitchen model to round-the-clock outdoor food distributions by appointment only, with areas that were once used as dining rooms pressed into service as warehouses in order to meet the growing demand. Currently, Masbia is providing food for 7,500 families, but according to director Alexander Rapaport, 50,000 families have been trying to make appointments for food pickups. “Before the pandemic, food items lasted for over a month,” said Rapaport. “Now they’re gone in a matter of days. Keeping up with supply has become not only a matter of resources, but of logistics.” Increasing the size of its facilities will allow Masbia to place larger food orders, take advantage of the ability to purchase items by the truckload at discounted rates, and to receive more food donations.

Conservative Icon Rush Limbaugh Dead at 70 THE PULSE: Talk radio legend Rush Limbaugh succumbed
to his long battle with lung cancer and died on Wednesday, February 17. Limbaugh began “The Rush Limbaugh Show” with WABC radio in New York City in 1988. At its peak, his syndicated radio program was broadcast on over 600 radio stations and would draw close to 30 million weekly listeners. Rush was the creator of the AM conservative talk radio genre and spawned an industry of like-minded programs. Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich credited Rush with being a vital force in the 1994 elections that saw Republicans win control of the House, Senate and multiple governorships. Rush coined his network the “EIB — Excellence in Broadcasting Network” and spoke to his audience from behind the “golden EIB microphone.” He said his talent was “on loan from G-d.” Former President Donald
54 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / February 24, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Trump awarded Limbaugh the Medal of Freedom during his 2020 State of the Union Address. THE IMPACT: Limbaugh’s impact on the political discourse in this country was immense. He gave voice to millions of right-leaning and conservative Americans who believed that the mainstream media was silencing their views. He was unabashedly pro-Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said that “He was a great friend of Israel, and he stood by us through thick and thin, always firm, never wavering.” However, Limbaugh’s rhetoric was also instrumental in popularizing the demonization and mocking of political opponents. Often the insults were personal, and he used terms like “femi-Nazi” and “environmental wackos” to assail his ideological opponents. Rush’s program fed the “us versus them” narrative that plagues American public discourse today. He would offer crude caricatures of his opponent’s positions and make them out as evil “socialists” intent on ruining America. In a Washington Post edito-
rial, conservative commentator Peggy Noonan wrote, “In its early days, his show was funny, bombastic, original and over the top,” but that, “In the past dozen or so years, I came to think he was not trying to lead people through thought but simply to divine where his followers were going and rushing to the head of the line so he could look as if he was leading them.”
Democrats Introduce US Citizenship Act of 2021 THE PULSE: Senator Bob Menedez (D-NJ) and Amy
Klobuchar (D-MN) introduced President Biden’s comprehensive immigration reform bill to the Senate. California Congresswoman Linda Sanchez introduced the House version. The bill calls for an eight-year citizenship pathway for illegal immigrants in the country prior to January 1, 2021. It also calls for expanding legal immigration through the issuing of green cards and work visas. It removes obstacles for asylum seekers and improves protections for migrant workers. It includes funding for technology improvements at border crossings and increased aid to incentivize the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras to fight gang violence and corruption in the region. The bill does not include funding for the border wall. It seeks to roll back Trump-era policies on those caught in the U.S. illegally and puts an end to the requirement that children be detained with their parents when facing deportation proceedings. THE IMPACT: Republican critics decried the bill as a “return to the radical left-wing policies that will incentivize illegal immigration and promote an unending flood of foreign nationals into the United States.” It is improbable that Democrats can muster the ten Republican votes needed to support the bill in its current form and avoid a Senate filibuster. Menedez, a member of the bipartisan 2013 “Gang of 8” and the 2018 “Gang of 6” that attempted to pass immigration reform, said that in the past Democrats “capitulated too quickly to fringe voices who have refused to accept the humanity and contributions of immigrants to our country and dismiss everything … as amnesty.” He said that “We know the path forward will demand negotiations with others. But we’re not going to make concessions out of the gate.”
Biden Administration Agrees to Iran Talks THE PULSE: The Biden administration announced that
America stands ready to begin talks with Iran about reviving the Iran Nuclear deal. State Department Spokesperson Ned Price said that the U.S. was open to accepting an
56 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / February 24, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
invitation from the European Union to meet with Britain, France, Germany, Russia, China and Iran to discuss the deal. Iran has threatened to bar UN inspectors from its nuclear sites unless the U.S. lifts its sanctions. The Biden administration has said that Iran must first return to compliance before sanctions are lifted. However, in a nod to the Iranians, the Biden administration agreed to stop pursuing snapback sanctions on Iran at the UN and lifted travel restrictions on Iranian government officials. On Sunday, national security adviser Jake Sullivan said that the U.S. was in talks with Iran about the fate of Americans detained in the Islamic Republic. When asked about the nuclear deal, Sullivan said that “the ball is in their court.” THE IMPACT: Sullivan reiterated that Biden is “prepared to go to the table to talk to the Iranians about how we get strict constraints back on their nuclear program. That offer still stands because we believe diplomacy is the best way to do it. Iran has not yet responded.” In comments to the Munich Security Conference, President Biden reiterated his position that diplomacy was the best option for stopping Iran’s nuclear ambitions. He said that “we’re prepared to reengage in negotiations with the P5+1 on Iran’s nuclear program.” But in a candid admission that the nuclear deal in its current form does not go far enough to constrain Iran, he said, “We must also address Iran’s destabilizing activities across the Middle East, and we’re going to work in close cooperation with our European and other partners as we proceed.” Biden’s announcement received criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who said that “going back to the old agreement will pave Iran’s path to a nuclear arsenal.” However, Netanyahu noted that “Israel is in close contact with the United States on this matter.”
Biden Calls Netanyahu THE PULSE: President Joe Biden reached out to Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu last week in a phone call that lasted two hours. Topics ranged from the Iranian threat, to Israel’s improved ties with Muslim counties, to Israel’s COVID-19 vaccine rollout. Biden spoke with Netanyahu in November after winning the election, and both leaders described the conversation as warm. However, speculation mounted that Biden was purposely giving Netanyahu the cold shoulder when he chose to prioritize phone conversations with other world leaders after assuming office. Former Middle East negotiator Aaron David Miller theorized that Biden was hitting the reset button with Netanyahu. He pointed out that Biden had once written, “Bibi, I don’t agree with a thing you say, but I love you.” Miller argued that Biden was making a break with Trump-era policies and that “Biden is likely to be a pro-Israeli president but not necessarily a pro-Netanyahu one.” However, White House press secretary Jan Psaki pointed out that even before the Biden-Netanyahu phone call, the administration was “having constant conversations at many levels with the Israelis.” She also insisted that the first Middle East leader Biden would reach out to would be Prime Minister Netanyahu.

“They won’t pay taxes!” “They’ll rebel against the king!” “The king will have no share in the land. The kingdom will crumble if the Temple is completed!” “He will suffer disgrace at the hands of the Jews!” The comments flowed fast and furious, the Tzarei Yehudah U’Binyamin (antagonists of the Yidden) taking pleasure in drafting their letter to Achashverosh, king of Persia. Though these Jew-haters originated from various locales — Bavel, Kut, Ava, Hama and other places — they were all united in their desire to make life difficult for the Yidden. After all, hadn’t their peoples suffered since they’d arrived in Eretz Yisroel, land of the Jews?
THE BORO PARK VIEW / 71
The Kutim, particularly, had grievances against the Yidden. First it was the lions of the Jewish land that made the lives of the Kutim miserable by attacking them, showing that Eretz Yisroel would not tolerate their evil ways. But once they’d undergone milah and had been taught Torah, the land had accepted them. The people, however, were a different story. Even though the chachamim had been forced to teach Torah to the Kutim, they’d done so with bitter tears. Had it not been for the orders of Sancheriv, king of Assyria — who’d exiled Yidden from the northern portion of Eretz Yisroel and brought in these people to replace them — the chachamim would have never shared the holy words with the heathens. The sages knew that the Kutim weren’t motivated to learn Torah for the right reasons, and therefore, they taught them only the basics: that Hashem controls the world and everything in it, that there are seven mitzvos incumbent upon all of mankind, and that Eretz Yisroel is holy. Nevertheless, the Kutim believed themselves to be truly converted, to be Yidden in every sense. And they did behave as pious Yidden in many aspects — but they also engaged in avodah zara as they’d always done. Their lives were a confusing mixture of Torah and idolatry. Over the years, the Kutim became numerous, and as their evil ways became known, they became a thorn in the side of the Yidden.
FROM BAVEL TO PERSIA
The political climates that both the Kutim and the Yidden lived through included the fall of Sancheriv, and later, the rise of Nevuchadnetzar, king of Bavel. Nevuchadnetzar swooped in and wreaked havoc upon the Jewish people and destroyed the Beis Hamikdash. Ten thousand Yidden — including the members of the Sanhedrin — were exiled, forced to resettle in Bavel. For the Kutim this was a boon, for they believed that they were the true Yidden and that Har Gerizim was chosen as the site of supreme holiness. As an expression of their confused religious practices, they built a temple on the mountain and placed inside it the image of a bird, which they called Nergal and worshipped. They had no need for the Yidden’s Beis Hamikdash. The Babylonian empire lost control over Eretz Yisroel when Belshatzar, a successor of Nevuchadnetzar, made one incredibly foolish move: After a battle in which an attack on his rule failed, Belshatzar rejoiced by drinking from vessels of the Beis Hamikdash. Belshatzar believed that the failed attack corresponded with the end of the prophesied 70-year span of Jewish exile. He thought that because his kingdom hadn’t fallen with this attack, it meant that redemption would never come to the Yidden and that the Beis Hamikdash would never be rebuilt.
72 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
In celebration, Belshatzar brazenly gathered Hashem’s holy vessels and filled them with drink to sate himself. But as he rejoiced, a hand appeared at the palace wall, writing the chilling words “me’nei, me’nei, tekeil u’farsein — measured, measured, weighed and divided.” Daniel Hatzaddik — who’d been appointed as an adviser to the king — interpreted this to mean that Belshatzar’s authority would be taken from him and given over to the very ones whose failed attack he was rejoicing: Koresh, the king of Persia, who had formed an alliance with Daryavesh, king of the Medes, through marrying his daughter. That very night, Belshatzar was killed by one of his own servants, who then informed Daryavesh and Koresh of what he had done. The allied kings arrived at the palace and slaughtered every member of the household — aside from one little girl, the daughter of Belshatzar, on whom Daryavesh had compassion: a little girl named Vashti.

A SUPPORTIVE KING Daryavesh brought the young Vashti to his son-in-law’s palace in Persia, where Koresh allowed her to mature before giving her in marriage to his son, Achashverosh. For this reason, it was the newly appointed king, Achashverosh, with whom the Kutim cast their lot. Though his father Koresh hadn’t done the Kutim any favors, they hoped Achashverosh would be different. While Koresh had given more than 40,000 Yidden permission to return to Eretz Yisroel and begin rebuilding the Beis Hamikdash, Achashverosh certainly could be swayed by his wife Vashti. How could she bear to see the rebuilding of what her great-grandfather, Nevuchadnetzar, had destroyed? Surely she would convince Achashverosh to halt construction of the Second Beis Hamikdash. And so, the anti-Semites in Eretz Yisroel all contributed their ideas of what to include in the letter that was penned by Shimshai the Scribe — son of the notorious Haman Harasha.
A POISONOUS PASSION Haman and his wicked children had their own grudge against the Yidden. As direct descendants of Agag — king of the Amaleikim, who had been almost completely annihilated by Shaul Hamelech — Haman’s family desired nothing more than to see the Yidden suffer and ultimately perish. On a spiritual level, of course, the Amaleikim’s hatred had no root in physicalities; it was a hatred definable only in ruchniyus terms. Therefore, the Kutim’s agenda fit well with that of Haman’s family. But unlike the Kutim, Haman wouldn’t be satisfied with any less than the wholesale slaughter of the Jewish people. Thankfully for him, Achashverosh was amenable to issuing stop-work orders on the Beis Hamikdash, and was actually thrilled to later have Haman plan the genocide of the entire Jewish community.
A HEARTBREAKING REALITY
How much pain can a single heart bear? How much sorrow can one soul suffer? For the king’s unwilling bride, life looked bleak. Orphaned of her parents, exiled from her land and forced to wed against her wishes, Esther Hamalkah suffered, constantly carrying the pain of galus in her heart. When first she was taken to the palace grounds, Mordechai Hatzaddik, who had raised her, would check on her welfare, knowing that she initially suffered from depression over her dire circumstances. But despite the misery she felt over being taken by the non-Jewish king, she forged on, knowing that she was destined for greatness. Through her, she knew, the redemption of the Jewish people would come. And it did, through the miracles related in Megillas Esther and throughout the teachings of Chazal.
74 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
A HAPPY ENDING? Haman was hanged. The Yidden rejoiced. And Achashverosh… taxed the people? Though the Yad Hashem had operated so clearly, Achashverosh refused to be touched by the miracles that had unfolded. He continued in his sinful ways, not deviating one iota from his typical behavior. And while the general population of Yidden rejoiced in their salvation, one Jewess remained captive in the Persian palace: For Esther, there was no personal yeshuah. Though her people had been saved from brutal annihilation — and she gave thanks for that — Esther Hamalkah was forced to continue living with an evil man who had no compassion toward the Yidden. With the removal of Haman and his henchmen, there certainly had been a de-escalation in the lifethreatening situation of the Yidden, but it still remained precarious. Mordechai Hatzaddik felt unable to step down from his government position as adviser to the king, aware that doing so would cause him to lose unique leverage on the government’s stance toward the Yidden. By holding a position in the king’s court, he was granted the ability to defuse any anti-Semitic plans before they spiraled out of hand. This was a situation of hatzalas nefashos, and nobody could fill his shoes. Of course, Mordechai Hatzaddik yearned to spend his time learning in the beis midrash and conferring with the Sanhedrin, but because he understood that one could never take moments of peace for granted when an anti-Semite was in power, the time spent doing what he loved was diminished. Neither Esther nor Mordechai was blessed with immediate pleasure in the aftermath of the Megillah’s story — after all, neither of them was where they wanted to be. It wasn’t a neat and clean “happy ending.” No, life was not pleasant for these pure and holy people. They gave up everything — all personal hopes and desires — but they did so because they knew that they were vital to Klal Yisroel and that Hashem had given them each a mission. They understood that their tachlis was bigger than personal happiness, and they never lost sight of that. This message was passed down to us in the Megillah itself, which bears no mention of Hashem’s name, because life is about finding Hashem even when He can’t be clearly seen, even when days are dark.

With her far-reaching vision, Esther Hamalkah understood that her role was so important to Klal Yisroel that it was worth all personal sacrifice. She understood that by giving her aspirations to Hashem and making His will her only goal, another great salvation would occur. And this would come through the child born to her and King Achashverosh. Little Daryavesh II, named for his greatgrandfather, Daryavesh, king of the Medes, was born in the midst of the Megillah’s happenings. Though he was certainly groomed to be a Persian king, and likely received little to no Jewish education due to his anti-Semitic father, his pintele Yid still burned. Those Jewish sympathies clearly came into play after Achashverosh’s death. One fascinating slice of history is brought to life by a papyrus scroll that was discovered on the Eygptian island of Elephantine more than a century ago. It sheds light on Daryavesh’s sympathies with Torah-true Judaism in the early years of his reign. On the papyrus, a Jewish man wrote to his brother who lived on the island that King Daryavesh, in the fifth year of his reign, instructed the Jews to observe the yom tov of Pesach with all its stringencies. The Yidden there, according to historians, largely appeared not to have followed the laws of Torah. Therefore, it may be deduced that this papyrus was Daryavesh’s way of coercing them to do teshuvah. King Daryavesh used his power in an even greater manner by overturning some of his father’s orders. Achashveroh refused to allow construction on the Beis Hamikdash to resume, but with his passing, Daryavesh inherited the throne — and with it, the right to enact law. Four years later, the Second Beis Hamikdash was standing.

LIVING WITH THE LESSONS
Miracles are constantly unfolding around us, and though days may appear dark and the future may sometimes seem bleak, Hashem’s Hand is constantly moving puzzle pieces into place. Throughout our rich history, we Yidden have been urged repeatedly to do teshuvah and come closer to Hashem. When we have listened, we have seen glory; when we have not, we have seen downfall. We’ve lived through the destruction of Bayis Rishon and Bayis Sheini, through exiles and redemption. Now, we pray for the third and final Beis Hamikdash and the ingathering of exiles. Let’s look for Hashem in the darkness.

Please note: While the points brought in this article are sourced from Tanach and Chazal, there are various opinions about the details of the happenings, and their interpretations may contradict one another. The one point not sourced in Torah was regarding Daryavesh and the papyrus sent to the Jews of Elephantine. Without a direct Chazal on the subject, the story behind the papyrus was incomplete, leaving this writer to imagine Daryavesh’s intent.

80 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
IT’S THE TIME OF YEAR THAT WE ALL — IN TANDEM — DO THIS ENDEARINGLY FUNNY DANCE. It starts like this: Purim’s coming! Let’s run along on our collective quest to find a bunch of somethings to express our love, friendship and appreciation to our nearest and dearest. You’re hunting down the perfect shade of purple, and I’m agonizing over my mini babka count, but it’s all the same kazatzka, right? Of course. Then, all it takes is one sugar-glazed day. As one, we do a sharp about-face. As one, we scuttle right back down the same path we’ve just labored up, shoving mountains of food ahead of us. The tempo speeds up to a frenetic pace because everything must go out, out, OUT! Do you need twelve mini babkas? In frantic unison, we host chometz parties. We forcibly consume whatever’s in the very back of our pantries, even the lemon wafers that no one likes, because Pesach is coming, and woe to us on that day of judgment! And behold! Now comes the most intricate part of this dance, one that calls for us to perform figure 8s around treasures of Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 — treasures guarded by little people who be young, but fierce. What of the sweets our kids are hoarding? Do we let them indulge? Dump the stuff? Buy them off? Should our kids be permitted to enjoy their loot with parental supervision, or must the monster be banished, no questions asked? I set off to find out. I corner my neighbors at the bus stop first. What strikes me then, and continues as a running theme the more women I question, is their absolute readiness. No one asks me why I’m thinking Purim already. No one hesitates with their replies. No hedging, “I don’t know, what do you do?” Because when our kids’ health and hyperactivity levels are at stake, we Yiddishe mammes have our dance steps down pat. Ruchy L., mother of a young, budding brood, says her kids are too young to get that much nosh; their collec-
tions are mainly culled from their the mishloach manos they receive from their rebbeim and teachers. She lets them eat some treats on Purim itself. “It’s not that exciting afterward anyway, and I can snitch a few things I don’t want them to eat without them being any the wiser. “But if you want to hear from experience,” she adds, “ask her.” And she points to Ruchy H., who is just leaving her house with her youngest. Ruchy is mother to a big bunch and has already passed the bar mitzvah–making milestone. “I go to the prize store,” she says comfortably. This enterprising mother prepares a veritable prize store for her kids, who use their loads of junk as currency to buy the tchatchkes. “I once spent over $40 on the stuff!” Her smile tells me she considers this money well spent. Done trading our tricks, both Ruchys and I do our mommy duty of bashing the nosh market, while my inner child listens with a rancorous smirk. I mean, who drooled over Crazy Hair and paint nosh, like, yesterday? S.K. shares her take with me on the way in from taking her mezhinikel off his bus. Mrs. K. has married off several children already, and she really doesn’t sweat
Purim. Each of her kids has their own box and goes through it methodically. “It gets less exciting as time goes on. They even throw away the really junky stuff themselves — they don’t even like it.” She pulls a face. “But you probably want to hear from other mothers who have a real system in place!”
THE BORO PARK VIEW / 81
Of course not, I tell her. I want to learn from every type of mother out there by hearing what works for them. It’s time to widen the net, and I reach out to friends and acquaintances, old and new. Tzurty B. says her kids end up eating most of their nosh, but she does try to skim some off the top. “If my kids get sweets that come in a pack, let’s say, I’ll sneak some away when they don’t see. And some of the stuff always ends up staying in the car after Purim day deliveries, and they’re forgotten!” That’s how this whirlwind of activity maintains the balance. My friend M.W. trades the nosh her kids bring home
S.G., a cousin of mine, really preps her kids on what to expect. They know their nosh will be stored in separate bags in Mommy’s room, and every Shabbos between Purim and Pesach, they’ll get to choose their personal Shabbos party. “With the stuff that I strongly believe isn’t food, I explain to them why they can’t eat it, and then I discard it. Whatever’s left Erev Pesach and is not chometz goes into the family nosh box.” Prevention — or, in this case, preparation — is worth a pound of cure. I’m also impressed with how S.G. runs the show on Purim itself. “I make sure the kids have enough solid food in them so they don’t subsist solely on junk. They wake up early and have breakfast, and we have a big fleishig meal pretty early in the day as well. I have the younger ones ask before they have nosh, though I let them eat it. I find it tempers the temptation somewhat. And I explain to the older ones about overindulging and leave it up to them.” Another cousin, G.B., buys off her kids’ collections and passes them on to Bikur Cholim. But apparently, it doesn’t always get there! “I once discovered the entire stash in the seforim closet that my husband must’ve transferred from the car.” My friend Leah Weinberger says it’s a free-for-all on Purim in her house — after her kids have eaten normal food. “But whatever stays over gets used for Shabbos, one nosh per kid per week. And,” she says, summing it up well, “hoarding the nosh and looking at it is half the fun!” I absolutely love the way my cousin, Sossy L., rolls with the punches. I give her my spiel about kids and nosh, and she says “Yeah, I tried to buy it off from them last year; I offered them a quarter apiece.” Knowing her crew, I’m shocked. “Did they go for that?” “Nah.” She laughs. “They said, ‘Give us a dollar apiece!’ It wasn’t worth it for me...” And they lived happily ever after. And so should we, whether our kids end up eating their nosh or not. Because we’re all part of the same, happy dance in which we nurture our families as best we can, and even as we improvise our steps to suit our family’s unique styles and needs, it’s still the same hora in the end. Ah freilichen Purim!
And behold! Now comes the most intricate part of this dance, one that calls for us to perform figure 8s around treasures of Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6.
for healthier alternatives. M. is part of a large, vibrant family, and her kids consistently get the latest on the market from Babby and elter-Babby. “They have healthy nosh out there, like YumEarth lollies and the new Bob Snail fruit roll-ups. I also find that Israeli ice cream is less junky, as they use cane sugar instead of corn syrup and no artificial coloring. My kids already know how many spoonfuls they can get for whichever nosh they trade in.” I love her resourcefulness! Toby G. offers her kids a choice: They can either sell their sweets to Mommy, or they can eat one nosh per day until the stash is gone. And, cleverly, “If they choose the second option, I don’t leave the nosh out. Usually after a week or so they forget about it, and I throw it out at a later date.”

BY: GITTY KAY PHOTOGRAPHY BY: LELESTUDIOS All of you superhero moms out there will agree that one of the biggest challenges of Purim day is getting the kids to eat some decent food. So when the editors of The Boro Park View suggested a “breakfast-mishloach-manoson-the-go” (because so many of us are rushing from Megillah-reading to dressing up to getting into the car before the traffic gets crazy!), I was excited to come up with something fun and nutritious. The trick here is presentation. You can serve crackers and cheese for breakfast, but instead of leaving the crackers in the box and the cheese in the bag, arrange them nicely on a wooden board and you’ll win the “gourmet mom” award. Add tomatoes (on the vine) and a few other sliced veggies, and now we’re really talking! This breakfast mishloach manos is a peanut butter and jelly “hamantasch” sandwich, fruit, and a cup of chocolate milk that you can hand to each child as soon as they’re up and about. With just a bit of advance planning and shopping, you can make these adorable on-the-go breakfasts — or another one of your choice! — that will make your kids feel special and give you the peace of mind of knowing that your crew is well fed!

Supplies List 1. Face paint cakes (looks like watercolor paint). I use Snazaroo. They are available in Toys4U and in craft shops in a variety of colors. 2. Face paint brushes: 1 thick and 1 thin (Regular ones can be used as long as you have a fine-tip paint brush and a thicker one.) 3. Face paint sponge (If you get a round one, cut it in half so you have a straight edge.) 4. Spray bottle with a mist spray nozzle 5. Paper towel 6. A cup of water 7. Baby wipes
How to Start 1. Lay out your supplies on a paper towel. 2. From a few inches away, spray all your paints, sponges and paint brushes. 3. To load a paintbrush, make sure your paint and brush are very moist but not dripping; spray them with water until they’re moist enough. Rub your brush on its sides back and forth on the paint, until you have a nice amount of paint on it. If it is too dry, add more water by spraying or by slightly dipping the tip of your brush into the cup of water. 4. Before using a loaded brush, wipe off any extra water that gathers on the handle at the end of the tip so it won’t drip onto the face you’re painting. 5. To load a sponge, the sponge and the paint have to be really moist. Use the spray bottle to moisten them. Then take the sponge and rub it back and forth, until there is enough paint on it. 6. When painting or sponging over the eyes, tell your model to close their eyes softly, like they would be sleeping, so that there won’t be creases in the paint. Don’t press too hard on the eyes; rather apply a few layers to achieve the right thickness. It is better to use a sponge over the eyes than a paint brush.
94 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / February 24, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Tips 1. Sponges and paint should have the right amount of water and paint so that you won’t have light, cracking, watery or mushy strokes. 2. Try out your sponge or brush on your hand for the desired consistency. 3. Spraying is much safer than dipping your sponge or brush in water. 4. Use a thin brush for thin strokes and use less hand pressure; for thicker strokes, use a thicker brush and slightly more hand pressure. 5. Use a thicker brush or a sponge to cover large areas. 6. When using a sponge to cover an area, pull the sponge onto the area with slight pressure and then dab to get it evenly layered. 7. To create straight lines with a sponge, use the sponge’s straight edges.

Clown 1. 1.
Sketch a square around each eye, with a triangle on top of it coming over the eyebrows. Fill it using a sponge when working over the eyes.
2. 2.
Next, add the detail in over the yellow. a. Outline the top of the triangle. b. Underneath the top of the triangle toward the eyes, draw small polka dots by gently poking the tip of your brush straight into the face. c. A little below the eyes, draw a zigzag design, with a long streak coming down the cheek. To do this, pull your paintbrush back and forth in a downward motion, and pull down after three strokes.
3. 3.
Next paint the mouth and nose. a. Draw a red circle over the nose. b. To create the mouth, sketch a big half circle from near the end of one ear until near the end of the other. Sketch an arch above the top lip and fill in the mouth area to create a grand smile. Add two small circles at the ends of the smile.
4. 4.
Draw a small curve on the nose and on the two circles at the ends of the smile.

Tiger 1. Sponge the middle of the face white, just around the lips 1. and eyes. 2. Sponge the rest of the face yellow, until the ears and 2. under the chin. 3. Blend by gently dabbing the area where the two colors 3. meet, adding more paint as necessary. (If this step is too difficult, the tiger will look great without it.) 4. If you don’t have gray paint, use a mix of black and white. 4. Sponge in a small muzzle between the nose and the mouth. 5. 5. a. Draw a straight line over the tip of the nose. Paint the tip of the nose black, filling in around the nostrils. b. Draw the outline of a small triangle from the bottom of the nose to the top lip. c. Ask your model to keep his mouth open and paint the top lip. You can now fill in the triangle underneath the nose. d. Add three dots on each side of the triangle, by gently pushing your fully loaded brush directly onto the face. 6. 6. a. Now we will begin drawing the lines. For all lines, gently pull your brush while carefully twisting it back and forth as you pull. When your line is long enough, lessen the pressure on your brush and leave off with a flick. (You may want to try it on your hand first to get the right stroke.) Regular wavy lines are just as good. b. For this step, draw five lines coming out from under the chin to under the mouth. The ends should be a bit thinner. 7. Using the instructions in 6a, draw the lines coming from the gray muzzle out across the cheek. 7. 8. 8. Draw one straight line from top of the forehead until the eyebrows. Draw two slanted lines on each side of the straight lines.(Vary the lengths of the lines for a very real effect.)

a. Sponge a circle at the center of the forehead toward the top. b. Sponge a circle on the eyelid, dragging it until about an inch over the eyebrows. c. Sponge the area from above the top lip until the nose, about 3 inches across. 2. Starting at either side of the nose, just under the bridge, and 2. ending at the side of the lip, draw a crescent on each side. 3. 3. a. For whiskers, starting at the corner of the white sponged area between the nose and mouth, draw a curve, arched upward, that extends until just after the pink area. b. Draw another curve at the bottom corner of the white sponged area, arching downward. Draw a third curve, slightly arched downward in the middle of the two. c. Repeat steps a and b on the other side. d. Draw a rectangle, from the lower lip until almost the end of the chin, and fill it in well. Mouth should be kept open until the paint dries. 4. 5. a. Starting close to the tip of one eye, draw a twirl upward. Draw another wider and longer twirl under it, going in the opposite direction. b. Right under the bottom twirl, dab another three short lines (Press the side of the brush into the face) with each starting lower than the next. c. Repeat steps a and b on the other side. d. Draw two tiny whiskers coming out on either side of the white area on the forehead. Then, add groups of three dainty dots going around the border, by very lightly touching the face with the tip of the brush. 5. 5. a. Draw a line from the tip of the nose above the upper lip. Add three polka dots to either side of the line by gently poking the paintbrush into the face. b. Outline the sides and bottom of the rectangle on the chin and then draw a thin line through the center.

Ask your model to close his eyes, and gen3. tly fill in the outer sides of each butterfly wing. 4. While the model’s eyes are closed, gently fill in the inner sides of the but4. terfly wings. Take a clean sponge and dab it on the line where the pink and the white meet, adding more paint as necessary. (This step is not necessary if it’s too difficult.) 5. 4. a. Outline the butterfly shape, with an extra stroke applied to the top. Don’t outline the center near the nose. b. Start at the center between the two eyebrows and draw a wide stroke that gets wider as you reach above the tip of the nose. c. Draw two inward curls a half inch above the line drawn in 5b. 4. 6. a. Gently dab a few soft polka dots at either bottom corner of the butterfly. b. Starting at the tips of the wings, draw three lines, slightly curved inward that end at the eyebrows. n the world of kosher wine, no season compares to the late winter months of Adar and Nissan. The weeks leading to Purim and Pesach, when wine plays such an integral role in our festivities, see producers, wholesalers and retailers deal with a significant increase in sales and an influx of customers who mostly eschew wine year-round. A visit to the wine store can be intimidating for the uninitiated, so we reached out to Royal Wine’s Manager of Wine Education Gabriel Geller for a guide to Purim wine, both for drinking and gift-giving. Our first question is, of course: What should people drink on Purim? “Before I offer suggestions,” Gabriel begins, “I must note that no one should feel pressured to consume anything they’re not comfortable with; it can be unsafe, unhealthy, and ruin your Purim. Now, for those who don’t drink regularly, I would advise that they enjoy a light, more pleasant wine; perhaps a white wine like our Pacifica Riesling. And for someone who’s looking to get tipsy, here’s a word of advice: Don’t mix wines, and definitely don’t mix wine with
other forms of alcohol.” To more frequent wine consumers, or oenophiles (yup, that’s a real word, pronounced ee-nuh-file. Webster Dictionary: a lover or connoisseur of wine), Gabriel suggests skipping the heavier red wines that are generally part of yom tov meals, and not spending the day tasting new varieties. Not only is it unlikely that they’ll remember what the wines tasted like, but it also doesn’t provide the familiarity that drinkers can rely on to know how a wine will affect them. He also advises both regulars and first-timers to stay away from overly sweet wines, which can cause nausea and vomiting, in addition to being higher in sugar content and calories. When drinking a greater amount than usual, Gabriel reminds Purim revelers to drink lots of fluids. Alcohol is a diuretic that can dehydrate the body, leading to a host of problems including the dreaded next-morning hangover. Personally, he likes to eat pickles on Purim as they are packed with electrolytes (in addition to being delicious, of course) that help the body retain fluids. As Royal Wine’s leading public face, Gabriel’s job often comes with a seemingly paradoxical responsibility to educate people to slow down or stop drinking entirely. On Purim it is important to remember that less is more, and to stop before things get out of hand. He suggests that someone who wants to take on drinking on Purim should try lighter wines like rosés and champagnes. Not only are they easier on the body, but the carbonation can help one get tipsy

faster as well as recover from it more quickly. For first-timer drinkers, this also makes it more likely that they’ll enjoy the taste of their Purim drinks. Determining what to drink is one thing, but knowing what to buy is becoming increasingly difficult as the kosher wine market continues to grow and expand. While there are no hard-and-fast rules, it is important to remember that Purim is not the most opportune time for experimentation and discovery. Stick to the basics and what has worked for you in the past. For many, one mystifying part of the wine-shopping experience is whether to buy wines that are mevushal or not. Since it was once common for wine to be poured for avodah zara, Chazal instituted a ban on wine poured by a non-Jew. However, wine that was cooked, or mevushal, was not used
While there are no hard-and-fast rules, it is important to remember that Purim is not the most opportune time for experimentation and discovery. for such practices and is therefore permitted regardless. Today, most of the pricier and upscale kosher wines are nonmevushal, but there are some very quality mevushal options available as well. When buying wine for a Purim meal, there is generally little reason to choose mevushal, but for a mishloach manos gift, mevushal can be the preferred choice if the recipient might be planning to save it for use at a simcha where non-Jews are involved in preparation and serving. Ultimately, mevushal provides practicality even though it might fall short in value and presentability. Whatever you end up choosing this Purim, remember the wise words of the famous Budweiser ads: Enjoy Responsibly! Ah Freilichen Purim!

WHAT SHOULD I BUY? Not only do mishloach manos and wine each play a large role on Purim, but they also offer the most options, and consequently, the most uncertainty for shoppers and planners. Here’s a brief overview of what to look for when buying wine for just about anyone on your list.
FOR AN EMPLOYER OR SUPERIOR For a gift like this, you will want something elegant, popular, neutral enough to be valued by everyone, and moderately priced in the $50 range. Resist the urge to buy an expensive bottle, or it might come back to bite you when it’s time for that raise…

FOR A WINE LOVER In this case, the gift is the wine itself, so the presentation or fancy bottle should not be your main focus. The ideal choice is a wine that the recipient doesn’t typically get to enjoy, like a Bordeaux or a bottle that isn’t that popular and brings something new to the table.
Gabriel’s suggestions: 1. Les Roches de Yon-Figeac Saint-Emilion Grand Cru
($40–$45) 2. Netofa Dor Syrah ($50–$60) 3. Herzog Clone Six Edition Cabernet Sauvignon
$120–$135)
FOR EMPLOYEES OR COLLEAGUES These gifts are generally sent in bunches, so it’s important to get something universally appreciated. Nobody likes a pretentious gift so keep it modest and classy.
Gabriel’s suggestions: 1. Herzog Variations Five Cabernet Sauvignon
375ml bottle ($12–$15) 2. Château Les Riganes ($10–$15) 3. Ramon Cardova Rioja ($14–$18) 4. Rashi Black ($15–$20)
4. Champagne Laurent-Perrier ($70–$80)

FOR THE YOU-JUSTDON’T-KNOW-IF-THEYLIKE-WINE GUY
There are a number of terrific, tasty, mild wines that are impossible not to love. Sweet, often bubbly, and with a low alcohol content, you can’t go wrong with a bright rosé, a white Moscato or a bottle of champagne.
Assume the worst and choose something that they’ll appreciate in that case. A great idea is a bottle in a fancy box that can be regifted forward. Another option is a bottle of scotch or whiskey that can be consumed intermittently over months or years.

With fish famously being the mazal of Adar, now is the perfect opportunity to dive in and explore this fascinating creature. Traditionally, fish have been associated with multiplying and bracha, hinting to the idea of marbim b’simcha, increasing joy. Fish have also long symbolized protection from ayin hara, giving yet another reason for Adar being a month of great mazal. FEAR

Thought you’re alone in your fear of fish? You’re not! Ever wondered how fish Galeophobia, or survive the winter — espefear of sharks, is quite common. cially when their habitat And even if you’re gets all icy and froafraid of small and zen? Contrary to seemingly harmless fish, there’s a name for what you might that. actually provides the water with insulation and helps it retain its heat. And since warm water sinks in very cold freshwater, fish schools near the bottom remain warm. Some species lie completely dormant, but most fish just gather at the bottom and take a “midwinter break.”
QUEEN OF SPEED With a speed of 68 mph, most consider the sailfish the fastest fish in the ocean. The sailfish is named for its spectacular sail-like fin that spans nearly the entire length of its silver-blue body. Often working in groups, sailfish thrash at and disorder schools of smaller fish, thus allowing the sailfish to easily locate their meals. Their spear-like bills also help slash at prey, shocking them into submission. Finally, sailfish engage their huge fins to create a fence around the smaller fish to prevent them from escaping their clutches.

SEA SLUMBER The nature of sleep in fish is controversial and continuously researched. While fish don’t sleep like land mammals do, most researchers believe fish do rest. Research shows that fish can reduce their activity yet remain alert to danger. Some fish float in place, while others wedge themselves into a secure spot on the ocean floor. These periods of “subdued activity” may perform the same restorative functions as sleep does to humans.
NOT IN A NAME Don’t be misled by the name, because starfish are actually not fish at all! In fact, the only resemblance they have to fish is that they live underwater. Interestingly, these creatures use seawater, instead of blood, to pump nutrients through their bodies via a water vascular system. Starfish — also known as sea stars — move with tiny tube feet located on the underside of their bodies. Adult sea stars can move at the astonishing speed of one meter per minute, using 15,000 tube feet. That’s fast! And despite their “star” name, not all sea stars have five arms; some of them have ten, twenty or even forty arms!
GEFILTE FISH ORIGINS FROM WHERE DOES THIS JEWISH CULINARY CLASSIC ORIGINATE? AS THE STORY GOES, GEFILTE FISH WAS THE PERFECT SOLUTION TO BOTH A FINANCIAL AND HALACHIC DILEMMA. THE TYPICAL FRUM FAMILY BACK IN EUROPE COULDN’T AFFORD TO SERVE FISH AT EVERY SHABBOS MEAL, SO THEY CAME UP WITH GEFILTE FISH! THE WOMEN WOULD GRIND THE FLESH AND BONES TOGETHER WITH INEXPENSIVE INGREDIENTS, THEN STUFF THE MIXTURE BACK INTO THE SKIN FOR BAKING (HENCE THE WORD GEFILTE, YIDDISH FOR “STUFFED”). EVENTUALLY THEY STOPPED STUFFING THE SKIN AND SIMPLY FORMED BALLS FOR STEAMING OR BOILING. ADDITIONALLY, THIS METHOD OF PREPARATION MADE IT POSSIBLE TO AVOID BORER, SINCE THE FISH NO LONGER HAD BONES THAT NEEDED TO BE REMOVED BEFORE EATING.
FISH TALK According to New Zealand Marine Sciences Society, the undersea world isn’t as quiet as we think. Marine scientist Shahriman Ghazali found that fish communicate with noises such as grunts and pops by vibrating their swim bladder. And why the talk? Fish are believed to communicate for different reasons, such as to scare off predators. Also noteworthy is that fish that can’t talk can often hear very well. Like your goldfish, for instance. You might be out of luck communicating with it, but while goldfish are unable to produce sound, they do have excellent hearing.
FISH IT OUT FISH IS CONSIDERED A SUPERFOOD — AND FOR GOOD REASON! FISH IS PACKED WITH NUTRIENTS THAT MANY PEOPLE LACK, INCLUDING QUALITY PROTEIN AND IODINE. FATTY FISH BOAST OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS AND VITAMIN D. FURTHERMORE, MANY OBSERVATIONAL STUDIES POINT TO FISH AS A GREAT SOURCE OF NUTRIENTS FOR OPTIMUM BRAIN AND HEART FUNCTION. A STUDY PUBLISHED BY OXIDATIVE MEDICINE AND CELLULAR LONGEVITY SHOWS THAT OMEGA-3 ACIDS FOUND IN FISH CAN CURE DEPRESSION, AND THE AMERICAN JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NUTRITION SHOWS PROMISING STUDIES TO TREAT ASTHMA WITH FISH. DUE TO THESE HEALTH BENEFITS AND MORE, THE DIETARY GUIDELINES FOR AMERICANS RECOMMENDS AT LEAST EIGHT OUNCES OF FISH WEEKLY.

Here! A looong way we’ve got.
What a journey!
Oy, this is hard!
What’s here? Here’s the big town!
Let’s follow the houses in order, so we don’t miss even one.
Yeah, sure, sure, we’re not missing even one.

Wait, there’s a small grocery here. I’m going in to get myself something to eat with this coin I got.
No, no! I have food in my bag! Oh, it must have gone bad already.
Tzedakah, tzedakah… Rachmanim bnei rachmanim…
Go to the grocery and get yourself a good meal. Why should you eat bread that’s been sitting in your bag for three days?
What are we collecting for, huh??
To waste it on food right away?
We were both paupers. We made our rounds in the cities and collected money. How are you on your way to riches while I’m still povertystricken?
A while later: This time we won’t go together, my friend. I’m off to buy fabric with the sum I collected over time.
How can it be?
I worked all the years to get to this moment. I didn’t waste even one coin. And you…?
It is simple, my friend...
WHAT DOES THIS TELL US? )’ כ,“להעלות נר תמיד” (כ”ז The ner tamid that the Kohen Gadol lit in the Menorah of the Beis Hamikdash symbolizes the Torah, as the pasuk tells us: “For a mitzvah is a candle, and Torah is light.” We have to utilize the precious time we have on Earth for Torah-learning and mitzvos. PURIM SAFETY TIPS
פאר א געשמאקע שבת אין די
האדסאן וואלי ריזארט
1. Don’t drink and drive- Driving under the influence of alcohol is dangerous and illegal and Purim is no exception. 2. As a parent, it’s your responsibility to make sure you’re aware of your child’s whereabouts at all times. 3. Make sure you know how your child will be getting around and that the driver is a reliable and responsible adult. 4. Giving alcohol to minors can be dangerous and is against the law. 5. Remind your children not to walk on the street and not to cross from between parked cars where they won't be visible to oncoming traffic. 6. When driving on Purim, use extra caution and be on the lookout for anyone that might emerge from between parked cars. 7. Alcohol poisoning can be catastrophic, know your limits and drink responsibly. 8. The bad guys out there know that Purim is about giving tzedakah and they seize the opportunity to take advantage. Remain alert and aware of people trying to pass counterfeit money. If you suspect something is off report it immediately. 9. Be aware of who’s coming into your home and make sure to secure all valuables in your home. 10. If you have an ill feeling about someone that entered your home, don’t hesitate to have him sent out. 11. Most importantly, the safetyofthe communityis ashared responsibility.
