SOME TIPS ON THE TOPIC (Re: Must-Try Must, Issue 73) Thank you for an amazing publication! It’s easy to get. It’s free. And it’s very eidel and kosher. I very much look forward to every Wednesday to see what you’ve come up with for the new week. (I would’ve probably commented a while ago if you would have options other than email for sending in comments; I would actually appreciate it if you add such options.) So I thank you now for all of the excellent recipes I’ve tried, the comics on the parsha, and interesting articles. I was very excited to see the must article this past week. I make must every single Pesach and sometimes in the middle of the year, too; before Pesach, since we only eat and drink homemade foods and drinks, and all year round for its deliciousness. I want to add some tips that might help those daring to try it for the first time. • Not all grapes are equally sweet, and must should be sweet. Therefore, I make sure to taste one grape before investing in a case. For me this is a very important step since I already turned out must that was very watery and not sweet enough. • Cover all working surfaces with plastic — the counters, the tables, the insides of the bowls that you’ll be using for washing the grapes, and even the walls. The grapes and juice can spray and leave stains. • Freeze the must for at least twelve hours before letting it drip. (Twenty-four hours is even better.) • In the article, the author recommends letting the must drip down over a colander. There are cloth strainers sold in houseware stores made especially for this process. You cover the frozen must container with the cloth, turn it over on top of an empty container, and make sure the edges match up evenly. These cloths are machine washable. • I make all the must we’ll need at once instead of doing them in batches. I find it easier to make it a one-time project. • Slushy must is delicious! BOGGLE WITH BUBBY (Re: Boggle Game) I had to share with your staff and readers a photo of the edible Boggle board created by my granddaughter Malky (a Boro Park Boggle player) for her Bubby (a Monsey Boggle player) l’kavod Purim. We’ve partnered weekly since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic in solving the The View’s Boggle board, and it has led to our having an even more meaningful relationship than ever before. For those who want to try their hand at solving this board, I’ll give a hint: It’s a set of three connecting words. Thank you! R.S. P.S. The answer? Best Bobby Ever!

Each Purim, I struggle with a yetzer hara dressed in the form of a bad mood. Something goes wrong or someone insults me, and my Purim day turns gloomy and difficult. This year was different. A local family lost a parent, and my husband and I decided to “adopt” some of their children for the day. We took them along with our own children to learn in the morning, distribute mishloach manos, and join in the seudah. We prioritized their needs over our own and helped them be b’simcha. The joy that giving brings enhanced our Purim and made it the most beautiful one yet! R.I. THE BORO PARK VIEW WELCOMES YOUR COMMENTS, FEEDBACK AND LETTERS.

PARSHAS KI SISA Collecting the Coins
When the Yidden were commanded to bring the machatzis hashekel, they were warned, “The rich should not give more and the poor should not give less than half a shekel” (Shemos 30:15). We can perhaps understand why the poor should not devalue the mitzvah, but what could be wrong with the wealthy giving more? If the reason was because each coin accounted for an individual in the counting of Klal Yisroel, the rich could have still continued to donate a single coin, but in a larger denomination. Why was the contribution limited to half a shekel?

WHEN HIS YESHIVAH OUTGREW the local beis midrash in Radin, the Chofetz Chaim announced a public campaign to raise funds to construct a new building. Reb Moshe, who lived in a small town not far from Radin, was roused by the proclamation. With his wife’s consent, he approached the Chofetz Chaim and said, “Rebbe, Hakadosh Baruch Hu granted me wealth, but my wife and I were not yet blessed with a child. That’s why we’ve decided to donate the funds to cover the cost of the entire yeshivah building. We want it to be a beautiful, comfortable makom Torah — and this way, we will have a part in the Torah that is learned within its walls.” The Chofetz Chaim was touched by the pure goodwill of a fellow Yid, but to Reb Moshe’s surprise, he replied, “You should be gebentched, Reb Moshe, but I cannot accept your offer. The yeshivah is a public institution, and it belongs to all of Klal Yisroel. How can we deprive all of the other townspeople from the zechus of being involved in the building?” Reb Moshe did not give up. “If the building of the yeshivah will rely on public funds, it will have to wait as one coin after another slowly comes in. Who knows how long it’ll be before construction can begin? And even then, who says there will be enough to build it comfortably? “I’m offering to give you the entire sum right away, enough for a large and magnificent building. How can the Rebbe refuse?!” But the Chofetz Chaim could not be swayed. Undeterred, Reb Moshe requested that the Chofetz Chaim come along with him to Vilna to present the case to Rav Chaim Ozer Grodzenski. The Chofetz Chaim agreed, and the two set out immediately. Upon arrival, both sides presented their positions to the Gadol Hador. Rav Chaim Ozer listened and wisely issued his psak: Since the Chofetz Chaim had publicly offered the zechus of supporting the yeshivah building and Reb Moshe had responded to the call, Reb Moshe
You could have been the world’s next Rothschild, but you still were not allowed to give more than your impoverished neighbor.
was entitled to have a part in it. The mizrach wall would be his, and it could be marked with his name. The remaining walls, however, would be open to the rest of Klal Yisroel so they too could have their share in the mitzvah. Everyone was satisfied with this arrangement. As they traveled back to Radin, Reb Moshe asked the Chofetz Chaim for a bracha. The Chofetz Chaim complied and warmly wished Reb Moshe, “You should merit to live as long as I’m alive.” The Chofetz Chaim lived to a ripe old age, and Reb Moshe, who was even older than the Chofetz Chaim, merited true longevity, passing away a mere few days after the Chofetz Chaim. * * * * * When it comes to a project that is applicable to all of Klal Yisroel, the entire public has the right to be involved. This explains why the machatzis hashekel was to be an identical donation from every Yid, according to the Daas Zekeinim. Hakadosh Baruch Hu wanted the building of the Mishkan to be relevant to the entire nation. You could have been the world’s next Rothschild, but you still were not allowed to give more than your impoverished neighbor. For any other purpose, a larger donation is appreciated and lauded, but with the Mishkan, the Torah drew the line at half a shekel. A larger donation would give the rich man a greater part in the mitzvah, yet the will of Hashem was for every single Yid to be an equal participant and to have an equal share in the privilege of building a Sanctuary for Hashem.

Did You Know? In 2009, archeologists in Emek Tzurim in Yerushalayim discovered a half-shekel silver coin. The coin weighs seven grams and is inscribed in Lashon Kodesh, indicating that it dates back to the time of Bayis Rishon; coins from Bayis Sheini would have been imprinted in Aramaic.
LAB GROWN DIAMONDS ARE FAR MORE AFFORDABLE THAN COMPARABLE EARTH MINED DIAMONDS.
This coin was likely used for the machatzis hashekel donation that every Yid, age twenty and up, contributed annually to the Beis Hamikdash.

No Herd Immunity Achieved Yet, Say Experts, While Offering Assurances on Other COVID-19 Concerns While many in the Jewish community have believed for months that the large number of COVID-19 cases has created some form of herd immunity, offering protection from the pandemic, experts are saying otherwise and urging everyone to get vaccinated. Speaking on a conference call with Jewish media outlets last week, New York City Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi said that not a single community in New York City has achieved herd immunity. Chokshi addressed certain hesitations about the vaccination, including the idea that it could prevent people from bearing children, noting that multiple studies performed on the vaccine have yielded no proof of any negative effects in that regard. “Based on the information that we have right now, as well as decades of experience with other vaccines, we do not have any evidence or indication that there will be harmful effects,” said Chokshi, adding that studies would continue on the vaccine and any possible long-term issues. Chokshi also said that the fact that the vaccine was developed over a relatively short timetable should not create any concerns, with both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines studied in clinical trials that included tens of thousands of people. He noted that participants received follow-up care for two months to monitor the vaccine’s side effects and effectiveness. Both Chokshi and Health + Hospitals CEO Dr. Mitch Katz said that the city needs to increase its outreach within the city’s Jewish community, which could include endorsements from rabbanim as well as creating vaccination centers within local neighborhoods once more vaccines become available, reported Boro Park 24. Dr. Chokshi estimated that all city residents who want to be vaccinated should be able to do so by April.
Nursing Home Visitation Resumes… Or Does It? While an embattled Governor Andrew Cuomo proudly announced that nursing homes could resume visitation on February 26, facilities found themselves frustrated by guidelines that some say are extremely difficult to meet. Speaking at a press conference last week, Cuomo described the emotional toll the pandemic has taken on those in nursing homes as well as their families, categorizing it
66 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 3, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
as “devastating.” The state’s new guidelines allow a limited number of visitors at facilities based on their size, with COVID-19 testing or proof of recent vaccination mandatory for visitors in counties with COVID-19 positivity rates between 5% and 10% on a seven-day rolling average. But visitation is only allowed in facilities that have had no reported cases of COVID-19 in the previous four days, a near-impossible goal to achieve, reported CBS New York. “We’re testing hundreds of staff twice a week, thousand per week,” said New Jewish Home president and CEO Dr. Jeffrey Farber. “We’re going to have positive results.” Farber suggested instead that a protocol of comprehensive testing, vaccinations and strict safety guidelines could make visiting safe, even in homes that may have had a positive COVID-19 test reported within the two-week period currently mandated by the state. According to the Department of Health, just 194 of the state’s 610 nursing homes are currently eligible for visitation under the new guidelines. “We’re not suggesting that they just open the doors and have unlimited visitation,” said James Clyne of Leading Age New York, which represents 200 New York nursing homes. “We believe that there are ways that homes could be open to visitation and still keep the residents safe.”
Mayor Recognizes Hatzolah in Taanis Esther Press Conference It was a well-deserved shoutout for Hatzolah as Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke briefly about Purim during a Taanis Esther press conference. With last year’s Purim festivities likely contributing significantly to the rampant spread of the pandemic in New York City’s Jewish community, the mayor took advantage of an opportunity to extend his Purim wishes along with a request for communal safety. Describing Purim as a celebration of life and deliverance from evil with a graphic made out of hamantaschen displayed next to his face, the mayor called on city residents to exercise caution and restraint, describing 2020 as a “different year.” “I want to thank all the community leaders, particularly the community leaders who focus on health care like the Hatzolah ambulance corps, who are getting the word out that, of course people can and should celebrate Purim, but they can do it safely, be smart about how big the size of the group is, be smart about staying close to family members and not having the big gatherings that are typical,” said de Blasio. “Having a happy and safe Purim, that’s what we’re urging everyone.” The mayor also took advantage of an opportunity to

mention that city’s ongoing campaign to vaccinate Holocaust survivors, “We’re reaching people who have been through so much,” said de Blasio. “We want to make sure they are safe, so we’ll continue to deepen that effort and we’re going to reach each and every one of the folks who need the help.”
Dance Zones, COVID-19 Tests and More as New State Wedding Guidelines Loom Get ready for official dance zones at weddings when New York’s wedding attendance limits go into effect on March 15. Interim guidelines released by the New York State Department of Health on February 24 call for catered events to be limited to 50% of official capacity with a maximum attendance of 150 people. While dancing will be permitted, it will only be allowed in designated dance zones of at least thirtysix square feet that are located six feet apart from other dance zones, andonly with immediate family, party or household members. And, of course, masks would be required. While live music will be allowed, musicians who want to be unmasked would need to be either twelve feet away from guests or behind some sort of barrier. Under the new regulations, county health departments or local public health authorities must be notified of all events, and everyone in attendance must have a negative COVID-19 test or have been vaccinated against COVID-19.

Biden Authorizes Strike on Iranian-Backed Militia in Syria THE PULSE: President Biden ordered airstrikes against Iranian militia outposts in Eastern Syria. The Department of Defense said that the strike destroyed multiple facilities and that there were casualties. It is Biden’s first military action since taking office. The strikes came in response to a rocket attack on an American Army base at the Erbil International Airport in Northern Iraq. The militia attack killed a civilian contractor working for the U.S. military and injured U.S. service members. In a letter to Congress, Biden wrote that “I directed this military action to protect and defend our personnel and our partners against these attacks and future such attacks.” Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said that he recommended military action to Biden. Austin told reporters, “We said a number of times that we will respond on our timeline.” Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) also publicly backed the president’s actions. Several Democrats criticized Biden’s actions. Representative Ro Khanna (D-CA) said, “There is absolutely no justification for a president to authorize a military strike that is not in self-defense against an imminent threat without congressional authorization. We need to extricate from the Middle East, not escalate.” Senator Tim Kaine (D-VA) echoed his calls and called for an immediate Senate investigation. Many Republicans backed the president’s actions. Representative Michael McCaul (R-TX), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, praised the attack as a “necessary deterrent.” THE IMPACT: The Biden administration is currently confronting the Iranians on multiple fronts. This strike was
74 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 3, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
undoubtedly a message to power brokers in Tehran not to test Biden’s mettle on these issues. Biden said that the strike was a warning to Iran to “be careful.” According to reports, the U.S. notified Israel before the strike. Israeli officials told the Walla News Agency that they see the strike as a “positive signal about the new administration’s posture towards Iran” and that the strike sends a clear signal to Iran that it must rein in the nefarious actions of its proxies in the region. According to the Israeli source, “The Iranians didn’t realize that Biden is not Obama and that if they continue down this road of miscalculation, they will eventually get hit.”
House Passes Biden’s America Rescue Plan THE PULSE: On a purely partisan vote, the House voted
219-212 in favor of the Biden administration’s COVID-19 relief bill. Two Democrats joined with Republicans to oppose the bill. Republicans criticized the bill as too large and costly and lambasted the Democrats’ go-it-alone approach. The bill includes significant benefits for large families, among them $1,400 for all household members including adult dependents — a family of seven would receive $9,800. Additionally, the expanded child tax credit benefit would be a boon for large families over the upcoming year. Stimulus and credits would begin to phase out for married couples with an adjusted gross income of over $150,000 a year. The bill now heads to the Senate, where it faces a trickier route due to the evenly split chamber. Additionally, the Senate parliamentarian ruled that the $15 mandatory minimum wage provision must be stripped from the bill in order for it

Trump took to the stage and declared that “I stand before you today to declare that the incredible journey we began together is far from ... over.” Trump committed to work within the Republican Party and not begin a new political movement. He told the crowd that “We’re not starting new parties” and that “We have the Republican Party. It’s going to be strong and united like never before.” Trump also used his address to attack Biden’s immigration policies. The conference drew a mostly pro-Trump audience and featured a roster of proTrump speakers. Senator Ted Cruz told the crowd, “Let me tell you this right now: Donald J. Trump ain’t going anywhere.” Trump easily won CPAC’s presidential preference poll, with 55% saying they would vote for him in a hypothetical Republican primary, 68% saying they would like to see him run again, and 95% saying they would like to see the GOP advance Trump’s policies and agenda. CPAC had a specially crafted golden statue of the former president on display throughout the conference. THE IMPACT: Trump’s CPAC address is an effort to ce-
ment his leadership at the party’s helm. Trump draws strong support from the Republican base and has a strong cadre of congressional loyalists. The Republicans that have crossed him have faced censure and criticism from their local GOP committees. Leading Republicans opposed to Trump, such as Mitch McConnell, Mitt Romney and Liz Cheney, were not invited to the event. Vice President Mike Pence declined to attend. The fissures among Republican leadership were on display when reporters asked Republican House Leader Kevin McCarthy and Republican House Conference Chair Liz Cheney if it was correct for CPAC to invite Trump to deliver a keynote address. McCarthy responded with an unambiguous yes, while Cheney responded by saying, “That’s up to CPAC. I’ve been clear on my views about President Trump. I don’t believe that he should be playing a role in the future of the party or the country.” Conservative House members jumped on Cheney’s response and renewed calls to remove her from her Republican House leadership position. Many have expressed concern that Trump supporters are imposing loyalty tests on GOP members and are guilty of attempting to “cancel” those Republicans who criticize the former president through censure and threats of being primaried. Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy told CNN’s State of The Union that “CPAC is not the entirety of the Republican Party,” and in a warning to his fellow Republicans, said that “If we idolize one person, we will lose.”

BABBY’S C H O C O L AT E BUNDT CAKE Like all of my grandmother’s recipes, this one takes the cake! It’s so ridiculously delicious that I guarantee that you’ll be baking this cake over and over. And each time, it’ll be gone as soon as it’s out of the oven. But it’s worth it to make it just for the smell alone! Thank you, Babby, for sharing the recipe.
INGREDIENTS 9 eggs, separated 1½ cups sugar, divided ¾ cup oil ¾ cup Lieber’s cocoa powder, sifted 1 tsp. coffee, diluted in 4 T. water ¾ cup potato starch, sifted This cake is best baked in a Bundt pan. DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350°. Beat the egg whites until frothy. Gradually add one cup of sugar, while continuing to beat until the mixture turns stiff. 2. In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks with ½ cup sugar. Add the oil, cocoa, coffee and potato starch and mix. Fold this mixture into the egg whites. 3. Pour the batter into a greased Bundt or tube pan and bake for 1 hour at 350°.

FUDGY GOODNESS Fudgy, chocolaty and decadent, this cake also ranks at the top of my I-make-it-every-year-for-Pesach cake recipe list. For a soft, fudgy center, this cake should bake for only about 35 minutes (not overbaking it is key). A matte crust will form on top, and the center will feel just barely set. I recommend using a 9-inch springform pan for easier removal, since it’s a delicate cake and might break apart when being flipped out of a standard cake pan. If you don’t have a springform pan and prefer to bake it in a standard round cake pan, let the cake cool completely before carefully flipping it out onto a platter or cutting board.
INGREDIENTS 6 oz. bittersweet chocolate, coarsely chopped ¾ cup oil 1 tsp. coffee ¼ cup hot water 1 cup sugar 4 large eggs ¾ cup Lieber’s cocoa powder DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 350° and line or grease your pan well. 2. Place a small saucepan filled halfway with water over medium heat, and bring it to a simmer. Place the chocolate and oil in a heatproof bowl and set this as a double-boiler over the simmering pot. Stir until the chocolate and oil are completely melted. Turn off the heat and remove the bowl from the saucepan. 3. Dissolve the coffee in the hot water. Add this coffee and the sugar to the melted chocolate, and whisk until the mixture is completely combined. Add the eggs and whisk again. Stir in the cocoa powder. 4. Pour the batter into the prepared pan. Bake until a thin crust forms and the cake is just set in the middle, about 35 minutes. 5. Let the cake cool for 15 minutes before removing the sides of the springform pan. Let the cake cool completely. 6. You can top the cake with some melted chocolate or snow kisses. To make snow kisses: Whisk together 4 egg whites and 1⅔ cups sugar until stiff peaks form. Using a pastry bag, squeeze kisses onto a lined cookie sheet and bake at 200° for 3 hours.

APPLE SPONGE CAKE My Babby, a”h, used to make the best white cake in the world, but as many times (plenty!) as we’ve been trying to recreate it, it still never tastes just like hers. It’s missing her love and her heart, the main ingredients that can’t be replaced. I decided to try a play on Babby’s white cake — a kosher l’Pesach version — and I must say it’s amazing! It tastes a lot like her original recipe, albeit with a new and tasty twist.

As we clean our indoor spaces to a sheen and take notice of our surroundings, it’s a time many of us think of a makeover. This year, when we’ve all spent a lot of time at home in the company of our family, we may want to not only spruce up the space, but also make sure it can handle the traffic of little (and big) human beings as well. Here, Lisa helps us explore how to choose upholstery that’s not only beautiful in its new state, but is designed to stay that way.
102 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 3, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Choosing the Fabric When designing custom seating, the first decision I make is which furniture company to use for the project, taking into consideration the price point, style and quality a client seeks. I will then either choose to go with one of the fabrics the company offers, or if their options don’t work, will sometimes opt to send them fabric sourced from elsewhere, known in the trade as COM (customer’s own material). In our busy child-blessed homes where guests are hosted and there’s lots of traffic and spills, below are the particulars to look for in any type of seating.
Stain Resistance Teflon Finish
If there’s a fabric option in the right color and style that has a Teflon finish, that would usually be my first pick. Teflon is a fabric-finishing treatment that is applied to material and embedded through and though so all fibers are altered to be stain-resistant. I have personally tested many Teflon-treated fabrics and found the most stubborn stains — ketchup, chrein, mud and blood — to come out with some stain remover and minimal scrubbing. This is not the case for most untreated fabrics. If the sofa company does not offer Teflon-treated fabrics, I inquire about the possibility of sending in COM (customer’s own material) that has been treated with Teflon at the mill separately. Although Teflon finishing may come out slightly more expensive and definitely makes the process take longer, it
is a worthwhile investment that will protect and extend the life of your sofas and chairs. Teflon treatment is much stronger, involves less hassle, and is a more permanent solution than applying Scotchgard every three to six months. If a Teflon-treated fabric is not an option, I’d go with a commercial-grade material of 100,000 rubs or more (explained below).
March 3, 2021 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 103 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Cleaning Codes The second important thing to consider when selecting a fabric is the cleaning code. “S” on a fabric’s description signifies that the fabric needs to be cleaned with specialized solvents (or dry cleaned). “W” signifies that waterbased cleaning is allowed for the fabric, making these the easiest to clean. Those rated “X” (which I usually stay away
The swatch label is coded to help you choose one that suits your family’s needs. This fabric has a Teflon-finishing option, and the fabric itself has a “S” cleaning code — it cannot be cleaned with water-based cleansers. The double rub count, at 100,000, makes it a great option for busy homes.
from) should only be cleaned with gentle brushing or vacuuming — no cleaning solutions at all. Cleaning codes are applicable to both dressy fabrics and vinyls. Many people think vinyls can be spritzed with anything, but the truth is that some are quite delicate and can be damaged from constantly being sprayed with Windex. Therefore, when I select vinyl for dining room chairs that I know will be used heavily and cleaned well weekly, I look for an even higher double rub count (see below) and always check the cleaning codes. I prefer not to use professional-grade cleaning products when water and gentle dish soap can do the trick, so the cleaning aspect is a major consideration when I choose fabrics. In general, when cleaning any furniture, start with the least aggressive approved cleaning product and work your way up as necessary.
Durability Fabric rubs
Abrasion resistance and durability of a fabric is measured by “double rubs” — each one counting for one backand-forth motion the material in question can sustain. When selecting a fabric, make sure to look at the label on the back of the swatch. Contract (commercial) grade is minimum 15,000 to 30,000 double rubs, so it is usually safe to say that 50,000 double rubs will do the trick. However, for high-traffic areas in our busy Jewish homes, with growing families and extended family and friends visiting, I usually prefer to source upholstery fabric with at least 100,000 double rubs.

merely icing on the cake, the creativity and skills learned can help with ADHD,
For the Living Room Professionally, interior designers are often taught that when designing a living room, it is best to start with the rug and build on that for the room scheme. But I like to start with the most prominent piece of furniture in the room — the sofa — and build the scheme around that. My first choice would be a Teflon-treated velvet or ultrasuede fabric.

When a Teflon-treated fabric is not an option, a commercial-grade velvet or ultrasuede, with a minimum of 100,000 double rubs, would be my choice. As far as coloring, gray is the old faithful for living room couches, though we’re moving into warmer tones now like greige and more taupey hues. But
106 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 3, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Ultrasuede with a Teflon finish
my advice is always to stay in your comfort zone and choose your personal taste over what’s the latest on the design scene. So if you love gray, keep it to gray. Woven fabrics are trending now too, but I use them sparingly, because they tend to collect more dirt in the crevices. They also often have the cleaning code X mentioned above, which makes it impractical for a happening home. The same process that I go through to select fabric for a living room sofa would be repeated as I design the chairs, ottoman or other features in the living room and create a color scheme. Teflon-treated ultraseude is a great living room option.
Dining Room Chairs Many people don’t want to hear about absorbent materials like ultrasuede in a room where grape juice spills — and can sometimes stay on the surface over a three-day yom tov before being washed off. Therefore, many opt for a leather or leather look (such as vinyl) for dining room chairs. I often play around with these, using leather for the seat and going with more decorative fabrics for the backs. The colors I choose will depend a lot on the layout and other prominent pieces of furniture in the room, or the schemes in the rooms visible from one vantage point, like in center hall colonials. I will either work with the same color family, or just include a motif that matches in, as long as the overall scheme flows. Sometimes I will go with bolder patterns and colors on chairs, working along with the chair design; a square chair will get a more square, geometric pattern, and rounder chairs a design with a curve in it.
In the dining room, I like to balance practical seats with more decorative backs.

For the Playroom I usually stick with leather couches for the playroom, working with the client’s price point and what the company I’m using for the project offers. I do not recommend leatherette (faux leather) as it flakes and will not hold up with the wear and tear. The main focus i for a couch in n the playroom is comfort, so often I will also work with a fabric in a darker color that’s soft and comfortable. Some fabrics give an illusion of leather, and those sometimes will also work. Most people find that woven fabrics lack softness, so I don’t use those often, unless it’s for an accent pillow.

In the kitchen, focus on easy-to-wash upholstery, like vinyl, and smooth designs without crevices.
For the Kitchen For kitchen chairs I recommend vinyls that can be washed by spraying. Another thing I look out for are chairs without grooves or crevices, or those that have a wide-enough split between the chair and back so crumbs and gook don’t collect there at all.
Bringing It All Together I look to mix texture and pattern in a room to add color, life and visual interest. A great place to add an unexpected pop of color is on the back or seat of accent chairs in a living room. Often, I will choose a solid, timeless color for the sofa, and accent it with pillows in fun, woven fabrics. These can easily be replaced when you want to change up the look in a few years, without redoing the entire room. Whatever you choose, don’t forget to trust your judgment and suit your taste, preferences and family’s needs. After all, you will be the one who will be spending time in these rooms more than anyone else. Make it yours!

Does the acronym DIY give you the thrills? Can your kitchen chairs use a makeover? Check off one or both of the above, and you’re eligible for using this guide on how to give your chairs the face-lift — er, seat-lift — they need. Gather up your tools and popcorn and make a party of it! And get ready to gape, because your reupholstered chairs will astonish.
You will need: • Vinyl chair fabric, enough to cover each chair you want to redo, plus at least 4 inches all around • Cambric dust cover fabric, A measuring the approximate size of each chair seat you want to redo • Drill or screwdriver • Staple remover B (a flat-edged tool and needle-nose pliers will also work, but a staple remover is highly recommended) • Strong scissors • Fully loaded staple gun • Blow dryer For the fabrics, I visited the S. Tillim Company upholstery shop in West Nyack. Their selection made me really eager to start! Their address is 24 Western Hwy N, West Nyack, NY 10994.
A
B
Onward! 1. Lay your chair on the floor, and remove the screws that hold the seat to the frame.
1
2. Break out the popcorn for the most time-consuming
part of your project: staple-removing! The chair I worked with was originally upholstered in fabric with a plastic cover, which used twice the number of staples. Luckily, vinyl is in vogue today. 2 Remove the seat from the chair frame and place it bottom-up on your work surface. Using a staple remover or flat-edged tool, remove the staples binding the old upholstery/plastic/cardboard cover to the wooden base of the seat. If you’re using a flat-edged tool, use that to loosen the staples, and then use the pliers to remove the staples from the wooden base. Do not point the tools toward yourself; sharp edges should always point outward!
3. Keeping in place the foam that tops the wooden
seat, remove the old upholstery fabric. If your foam is too worn to be reused, new foam can be purchased at any upholstery-needs shop. 3
4. Place the new fabric you chose on your work surface, vinyl side down. Place the old fabric on top, and trace its size plus approximately 4 inches on every side. Cut out your new seat cover. 4
5. Lay the new fabric on your work surface, vinyl side
down, and center your chair seat face-down on the fabric. 5
New!
Beautiful custom gowns & teen line!
6. You’ll be stapling down the sides of the vinyl first,
leaving the corners for later. Pick a side to start with, and pull the vinyl tightly over the edge of the seat. Staple at small intervals about an inch from the seat’s edge, with the staples parallel to the edge. Holding the staple gun at a slight downward tilt will give you a good, tight staple. 6
7. You’ll be best off doing this step with another
person. Once you’re done stapling the first side of the seat, hold the seat upright on your table, with the top of the seat facing you and the finished side of the seat flush with the table. Use one hand to pull the vinyl tightly up across the seat and over the edge. With your other hand, working from the bottom of the seat to the top, push out any air trapped between the vinyl and foam — out, out, out! If you have someone helping you, continue to hold the fabric tightly over the edge and have your second-incommand start stapling. Remember to steer clear of the seat corners! 7
8. Repeat the above two steps to finish stapling the remaining sides of the chair seat.
March 3, 2021 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / 119 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
Now for some tips: Once you get the old upholstery out of the way, your main work is to pull as tightly as you can while pushing out extra air as you staple. If you don’t like where your staples are going or what they’re doing, worry not! Just remove the offending staples and redo. While you can do this project yourself, a second pair of hands will be of invaluable assistance.
9. Paying attention only to the sides (and ig-
noring the corners), trim the excess fabric from the underside of the seat. 8
1
1
2
3
4
5
10. Blow-drying the fabric will soften it to
stretch neatly over the chair’s corners. Turn your blow-drier to the highest setting, and begin by blowing the first corner. 9
11. Once the fabric is hot, use both hands
to pull it tightly over the corner. Use your fingers to pull 10 any bunching over the edge and under the seat. If your assistant is still around, they can staple around the corner while you pull tight. Repeat with the remaining corners, and trim away the excess fabric. 11 Whew!
12. Spread the cambric dust cover fabric over
your work surface, and place the chair seat on top, with the vinyl face-up. Trace the size 12 of the seat on the cover fabric, plus an additional inch on each side. Cut to size.
13. Flip the seat over and place the dust cover on top. Folding under a bit as you go, staple along the edges of the seat. 13
14. Lay your chair frame on the floor. Place the seat in the correct position on the frame. The screw holes on the bottom of your seat are now covered with the dust cover fabric — but no worries; the fabric is thin, and you can screw right through. If your chair frame has holes for the screws, put the screws through and find the corresponding screw holes in the wooden seat base using your fingers. Screw back into place. 14
15. Stand the chair upright and just look at
it. Once your giddy disbelief has calmed, continue the above steps to reupholster your entire chair set. It’s as easy as... ah, 1 through 15!

T
he day the exquisite dining room set arrived, my entire family was starry-eyed. Our dining room was the tasteful heart of our simple home: spacious, with a slanted ceiling that boasted exposed wooden joists. An entire brick section included a working fireplace and cool wine cabinet, and a custom-made seforim closet was installed against one wall. It was the homework room and playroom and parlor and laundryfolding station, and it functioned as a bedroom, too, when guests were occupying the children’s rooms. And now my mother-in-law, ever the gentlewoman (you can take a woman out of Hungary, but you can’t take Hungary out of a woman like her!) had gifted us with an Italian furniture set that was hustled in by the furniture team, assembled, and soon filled the room with its grandeur. The gleaming wood table was soon covered with thick protective table pads (the only surface my kids would ever know), but the chairs were much more susceptible to the elements; the fine, dusty-pink upholstery and curved varnished wood frames were so breathtaking in the show window, but so frightening to a mother of a rambunctious crew. While the china closet and table remained pristine, the years took their toll on those light-pink beauties. And by the time our youngster traffic had increased with the addition of adorable little grandchildren, and the grape juice flow had intensified to new proportions, the upholstery was rubbed out and tired, the wood was fatigued (“distressed” at that point was still a sign of age, not of fashion), and I decided it was time to give my chairs a makeover. I purchased many yards of a beautiful tapestry fabric with a practical design, and my project was launched. First I got to work unscrewing each seat, undoing the fabric, and reupholstering every one of the twelve chairs. Over each finished product went a heavy-duty plastic cover; at that point in my life, when the child-to-adult ratio at a regular seudah was overwhelming, practicality won over
elegance. I measured and cut and stapled, and when each seat was complete, it moved into my husband’s jurisdiction, and he screwed each seat back into its frame. It took some creativity and experimenting to come up with a solution for the chair backs, but I soon figured out how to create an appealing slipcover, with a rounded piece at the front and back, and the sides slightly gathered to fit prettily over each frame. It was some job, and when it was done that first Pesach, I slipped the covers over the backs and surveyed my handiwork with satisfaction. The chairs looked beautiful, fresh and — most importantly — intact. The new chairs were so userfriendly. They were practical — and they were washable. I’d remove the fabrics before each Pesach, wash them on delicate, and then return them to the chairs for Seder night. But then, one day, I found myself face to face with nostalgic dusty-pink upholstery. One chair had lost its cover, and we couldn’t imagine how it could have vanished. The most creative scenarios just didn’t make sense. Did it fall off when
He walked into the dining room and stopped in surprise. “What happened?” My husband looked at him, wondering what could have startled him. “Uh... are these your chairs? I think I have one of your covers in my house!” Apparently, while we were scratching our heads wondering where the chair cover had disappeared to, this chavrusa’s wife was scratching her head, wondering from where this strange piece of tapestry fabric had suddenly surfaced. At first, she was sure it was a carriage cover due to its rounded shape, but no, it wasn’t. They’d considered dumping it, but ended up holding on to it, in case someone would claim it. And the story finally came together. My husband had this tendency of draping his coat over the back of a dining room chair. He must have pulled the cover off the chair along with his coat when he was on his way out one day, and unknowingly donned them both. How he must have looked, with a chair cover bunched under his coat, is a cause of much speculation to this day. And the sight it must have been
While the china closet and table remained pristine, the years took their toll on those light-pink beauties. the cleaning lady had inverted the chairs onto the tabletop to wash the floors? Possibly, but then where did it go? Did a kid take it? Very unlikely. We searched the house. We scoured the closets. We asked every family member for clues, but the slipcover was gone. And it seemed like it was gone for good. When I gave up on it ever resurfacing, I took out some leftover material and my sewing machine and set out to sew a replacement chair cover. I had just about enough fabric for two, and I made both, just in case. Because if one can go missing… I wanted to be prepared if the strange scenario were to repeat itself. Several months later, my husband’s chavrusa came to learn at our home.
triggers ripples of laughter each time the story is rehashed. He must have removed his coat at his chavrusa’s house, and it probably stayed on the table, or chair, or fell to the floor, with my ever-oblivious husband making his way home wearing only his coat, without the extension. And soon, the lost chair cover was back. But I was back at the sewing machine, attaching a piece of elastic to the bottom of each chair cover — elastic to slip around the two rear legs before slipping the cover over the backs. After all, I had no fabric left! And that was the end of missing chair covers, under-the-coat hunches, and mysteriously shaped textiles landing in people’s dining rooms.

Hi, everybody! I know that during the three weeks teenagers have off from school before Pesach, they jump out of bed precisely at 7:00 each morning and quickly offer to help scrub the toilet bowl and the gas range grates. Whoops. I’m getting calls from mothers asking if I live under a rock. In their homes, they claim, the girls tumble out of bed sometime between midday and sunset and prepare a gourmet meal that puts most restaurants to shame. Then they sit down to eat it. 132 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 3, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
This year, however, mothers and teens can both win in the Erev Pesach cleaning madness — without the madness! Starting this week, The Boro Park View will be providing a cleaning plan for teenage girls between seventh and twelfth grades.
Here’s how it will work: 1. Over the next three weeks, chores will be divided and organized, with specific jobs to tackle each day. Follow the program, and have your sisters, neighbors and friends join in! Be advised that if any of the chores do not apply to you, substitute with something similar, if possible. And if your mother wants to alter the schedule, she comes first! 2. There’s one day off every week (Wednesday, so you can run pick up your copy of The Boro Park View and do your mother’s errands while you’re at it). It’s also a great day to catch up on any missed jobs. 3. We will provide a chart this week. Clip it, and fill it out each day after you complete your assigned chores. 4. Once the program wraps up, submit your completed chart to The Boro Park View by Wednesday, April 7. You can fax it to 718-408-8771, email it to comments@thebpview.com, or mail it to: The Boro Park View, 1274 49th Street, Suite 421, Brooklyn, NY 11219. 5. Eight lucky winners will be drawn at the end of the program. Each one will receive a $25 gift card at an exciting local eatery! This week, let’s tackle your bedroom. Assuming it’s your favorite room in the house, this should be a breeze! Music vamped up? Window wide open? (Okay, not yet. Maybe next week!) Let’s get started!

I even tried acupuncture at one point but it didn’t help. At one point I got other pains as well such as stomach pain, back pain and chronic fatigue. I would fall asleep at shiur every day. One day someone told me that I should try the sarno method since it can really help me. It actually helped me tremendously! Within a few days I got rid of my stomach pains and back pains and fatigue. A short while later I was able to get rid of my headaches too. I am off pills today and have my life back after learning the sarno method.

(Of course, consult with your mother about everything you want to get rid of.) The rest will go back into the closet, neatly folded. Having a problem parting with stuff? Ask yourself these three questions: 1. Have I used this in the past year? 2. Will I use it this coming year? 3. Do I have 36 other items serving the same purpose?
$50
Wipe down bins and shelves. You don’t necessarily need strong cleaning products for your closet. A spritz bottle with Mr. Clean diluted in water and a shmatte will do the job here. After the shelves are done, tackle the hanging clothes. Hang hangers facing one way. You can hang Shabbos or weekday clothes separately, or hang whatever you wear more often in the front of the closet. Personally, I like when the clothes are in order of color and in order of length. Even the uniforms suddenly look like wedding gowns when the closet is neat!

Shoes, glorious shoes! If you can’t see an inch of your closet floor, that may be a small problem. Take your shoes out and mop the closet floor. Wipe down the shoe racks. Wipe shoes with a soft cloth. Now, I’m not here to tell you how many pairs of shoes a teenager is supposed to have; that’s your mother’s job. But it’s my duty to tell you that contrary to popular opinion, shoes really do not make the man. Your smile and good middos do. Okay, a new pair for yom tov won’t hurt, but only if your closet can accommodate it.
Friday, March 5 Assuming you wake up before your mother bentches licht, help your mother with whatever she wants. Surprise her and do something even before she asks. Extra points for that!
Winter Sale
Sunday, March 7 YOUR BED AND BEDROOM DESK This will take approximately two to three hours, including the wash cycle. Strip your linen and dump it into the washing machine. While it’s washing, head over to your desk and check out your stash of wonderful paraphernalia lining the tabletop and drawers. Hmm... Last time I sent my personal robot to check around town, most desks belonging to teenagers were… a bit chaotic, to put it very nicely. A teen’s desk should be equipped with paper, pens and cute sayings that turn it into an area where it’s enjoyable to do homework when you’re not necessarily in the mood of it. Although I’m sure that never happens. But now you’re in luck! Because homework for the next few weeks does not mean sitting at your desk. Empty your drawers, and give the souvenirs you saved from third grade to your little sister. She deserves it for putting up with her big sister bossing her around. Um, not you. Just in general. Try to keep your desktop clutter-free. An uncluttered desk is a sign of an uncluttered mind. Or something like that. Back to your linen. Put the pillowcases and sheets in the dryer. Some hang duvet covers, some dry it in the dryer. Consult with your mother. Pick up your mattress with the help of your sister. You’ll definitely find at least one thing there that you were looking for sometime in the past few months. Clean and wipe down your bed. Move your bed and clean around it and underneath. Put your linen back on. Now your room smells fresh and clean. Take a break, and call your friend to check how she’s doing with her bedroom.

Monday, March 8 FINISH UP YOUR ROOM This will take approximately two to three hours. Empty your chest and night table drawers, wipe them out, and sort through what’s inside. Check for holes in hosiery. Put aside anything that needs mending. All the loose quarters and dimes and nickels and pennies you’ll find can go for your shoe fund. The surface of your night table should have a night light, siddur and the book you’re currently reading. Really. Nothing more. Spray windows and mirror with streak-free Windex. Shades need a wipe-down. Consult your mother to see what to do with your rug and curtains. Bedroom all done? I think so! Ah, doesn’t it feel great to declutter and make space for new things?
Tuesday, March 9 BOOKSHELVES/SEFORIM CLOSET This will take approximately two to three hours. If you enjoy getting lost in books, this job won’t feel like a job at all! Take books off one shelf at a time, and wipe down the shelf. Check each book to see whether it needs to be taped. This is also a great time to label your books so that your friend will be able to return the books she borrows a year after she takes them. Arrange the books by author and genre and return them to the shelf.
Wow! Great job cleaning! Make sure to pick up the next issue for further instructions, because you’re off from school for precisely this reason! And for rewards, of course. Catch you next week! “Mommy, Dovy said they finished cleaning the dining room.” “Mommy, when can we make a bubble bath for the mentchies?” “Mommy, my whole class finished their whole house for Pesach!” It starts in a slow trickle, then gathers speed, and soon turns into an avalanche. My kids want to start cleaning for Pesach! And all Mommy says is “hmmm.” I’ll come clean here: I start cleaning for Pesach very late. We spend our Tu B’Shvats in Shevat and Purim in Adar. Even when the costumes are washed and sorted and curly ribbons are out of sight, the shmattes still don’t take over. I hear the whirr of vacuum cleaners from windows up, down, right and left of me. Trust me, I know Pesach is coming. (I've been accused of otherwise in the past.) But here’s the thing: I cannot stretch Pesach for so long in my mind. It just doesn’t work. To me, life is too busy to layer one month upon another. I try to just manage my days as it is. In the last two weeks before Pesach, the house
140 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / March 3, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
turns on its head and goes huff-puff, hustle-bustle. For two weeks, we can handle chaos. Supper is bagels and cream cheese, pizza, or even bread and peanut butter. Meanwhile, I tackle each room one day at a time in a simple, straightforward fashion: remove contents of each closet, wipe down the shelves, shake out the contents, and return. Repeat. The higher shelves untouched by young hands will be only checked for chometz, and a big pile of games goes straight into the mechiras chometz closet. In rare cases I will organize, but only if it’s a swift no-brainer. All year I’m a brutal disposer and things-purger, so organizing doesn’t have to happen on Erev Pesach. And so we go: remove, clean, return. The kids enjoy a lineup of day camps and trips of helping Tatty with Pesach errands. And a help it is; without those excursions, I couldn’t get Pesach done. On Pesach cleaning days the house is at its dirtiest. The floor might remain dusty and grimy from Shabbos to Shabbos; all that matters is that the rooms are purged of chometz.

I think I got the Rosh Chodesh Nissan idea from a school friend, who, way back in the day, told me that her father didn’t let any Pesach cleaning start until Rosh Chodesh Nissan. I guess the idea kind of stuck in my mind until I decided to adopt it. I will admit I do take it too far sometimes. In my protest against Pesach stress all the way back to Shevat, I try to prove to the world that life can and should be lived with peace of mind. One year we were invited to a Shabbos sheva brachos in Yerushalayim less than two weeks before Pesach. Great! But not only would we prepare for and make the long trip to Yerushalayim with our children, we would enjoy the works: mekomos hakdoshim in the morning, touring at noon… Until a very caring family member said: Stop! And I humbly nodded and admitted that the idea was absolutely nuts. It was Erev Pesach, and I had to use every spare moment of my Friday morning to get things moving. We’d leave the touring for Chol Hamoed. Oh, well. Two weeks before Pesach? I hear you thinking “stress.” I respect that people have differing approaches and stress is very individual; please do respect my way, too. To me, I’m cutting out stress for very many weeks. And in those final two weeks, things are hectic, but it’s a doable
kind of hectic: it only lasts two weeks, and the goal is not too far. Think about it: We’re only studiously washing hands and shaking out crumbs for a limited time. We’re only shouting at the kids “don’t move from the table with chometz!” for two weeks. Oh, the kids. They want to clean for Pesach, too, you’re saying. What’s a Yiddishe home without the Lego bath or creating little pools of water in strategic places around the house with dripping shmattes? I usually choose a day when my blood pressure is at an equilibrium and we enjoy (or try to) a gezunte Pesach cleaning afternoon. It lasts until I finally yelp “no more!” Poor kids, they don’t get another chance at Pesach cleaning until the next year. I can hardly resist reminding the kids that if not for their very industrious job at making our home, uh, Pesach-free, I would not really need their “help.” What should I tell you, learning to “accept help” does take on new meaning. Now I’ll get off the soapbox and get back to the soap and bubbles. And let me turn up the music while we’re at it... This can be fun! Malka Katzman is the author of Teens Talk, the literary companion that shares over twenty real-life stories from teenagers’ realities.

Sewing is the earliest form of textile art, making needles a basic. Chazal even include it in their teaching of Hashem’s plea to us: “Open for Me an opening the size of the eye of a needle, and I will open for you an opening the size of a hall…” This humble tool has withstood the tests of time and change, and in its unassuming way, continues to keep us clothed. Before the golden age of needle production in the nineteenth cenA needle is a needle is a needle, hm? I also thought so at tury — when needles first. SEWING NEEDLES 101
• The CURVED SEWING NEEDLE was created for repairing things like lampshades and upholstery. They’re also used to create crafty stitches. And the best way to chase down all these needles in a spill? A magnetic needle cushion. You’ll have those little steel truants clamoring back to base in no time.
DID YOU KNOW? Needles were once made of bone or wood, and the first needles actually had split heads instead of an eye.
The process of the needle’s eye being cleaned is referred to as cheeking.
The world’s largest sewing needle is 2.46 meters long. It was used to sew a whopping… fifteen stitches on two pieces of fabric. It seems some things are best kept little!
At Queen’s College, Oxford, in the UK, there is a tradition of presenting each scholar with a threaded needle on New Year’s, together with the advice to “take this and be thrifty.”

SPIRAL EYE NEEDLE Pam Turner was a secondgeneration struggler in threading needles. Frustrated by her difficulty, she invented the spiral eye needle, launched in 2008. You thread this needle by looping your thread around the eye of the needle, then slipping the thread into the slot alongside the eye, up through the “spiral,” and into the eye itself. This design prevents the thread from slipping out of the needle while sewing. After all, Pam quotes her mother as saying: “We’ve been to the moon! Why can’t we fix the needle?”
THREADING TIPS • Niftiest needle tip ever! When threading your machine or hand needle, place a piece of bright paper behind the needle to see the eye that much better. • Snip your thread at a 45-degree angle. • Stiffen the edge of a limp piece of thread with water or wax. Don’t use wax on thread you’ll put through a machine, though, as it’ll gum up the machine parts. • Invest in a needle threader. It’s extremely handy.
