Yanky—Everyone's Favorite Cashier Turn the page for the bigger picture
Meet Yanky: At the grocery late Erev Shabbos, Yanky is busy behind the register checking out ‘his’ customers as they get their challos and Shabbos nosh. They know him by his first name and specifically choose his checkout line because only he knows how to make each one of them smile in the Erev Shabbos rush.
You see Yanky’s passionate face. Behind it is a bigger picture. Two years ago, a Hamaspik job counselor had the career schmooze with Yanky, helping him choose what he wanted to do. Then, he taught him everything about a grocery. Yanky knew what he wanted to do. The Hamaspik Skills Development team helped him get there.

(Inbox, Issue 79) B’hashgacha pratis, I was in Boro Park last week where I saw your wonderful magazine and brought it home. At the licht on Friday night, like every week, I davened for Tracey (whose Hebrew name is Esther bas Ana), a Russian immigrant I care deeply about who is unjustly sitting behind bars. One of the many things I included in my tefillos for her is that she should be able to receive more letters to light up her days in prison. The next day I started reading your publication, and there I saw an answer to my prayers: a letter from a writer who mentioned that she’d like to write to a female prisoner, in reference to an article in the previous issue. Please let the letter-writer and everyone who would like to participate in this mitzvah know about Esther bas Ana Richter who can be written to using the address I provided. She has limited ability to write back but appreciates any mail she gets. Anything can be sent. You can even clip divrei Torah from this magazine; any correspondence goes a long way. Even a simple “hello” message is extremely beneficial for several reasons; supreme among them pikuach nefesh — so that it is known in the prison that people know and care about her, are supportive of her, and that she has those looking out for her welfare. For her to receive letters, you have to write on the envelope a full return address that includes a first and last name, street address (not a post office box) and a zip code. No adhesive labels may be affixed; the only adhesive allowed is the postage stamp on the envelope. No glitter, glue, paint, stickers or gifts are allowed. Don’t enclose stamps, money or photos (though you may send a newsletter that includes photos, just not photos that seem like gifts, which one could put into an album).

At one point, there was a maximum allowance of four sheets of paper in a standard envelope and ten in a manilla envelope, but that might have changed. If things aren’t according to the code, the mail will be withheld from the prisoner. Also, if the writing is not in English, the prison personnel may withhold the letter with the excuse that they don’t have a translator. Finally, the letter must be signed with both a first and last name. Please daven for Esther bas Ana, and her mother and children. Tizku l’mitzvos for your tefillos, writing or any way of helping. (Inbox, Issue 74) Thank you, M.K., for the wonderful idea of making “must sheini.” I’ve been making must successfully for many years, baruch Hashem, and I never thought there was anything to do with the leftover pulp except discarding them. This idea not only gave it a second life, but we were treated with a delicious, enjoyable drink all Pesach long. It was especially helpful since we can never make enough must for all of the children and grandchildren, ka”h, who each want to drink this special Pesach juice. Now, with this second helping, there was enough to go around, much to everyone’s delight. L.S.
ALL ON HIS OWN (Re: Must-Try Must, Issue 73) I wanted to thank The Boro Park View for the very clear guide with instructions for making must. My fourteenyear-old son was so very excited to take on this project. From purchasing the grapes and supplies to pouring the must for our family, he was able to do it all on his own and was so proud! It is the first time we had homemade must at our Seder. Thank you! M.E.

by COVID-19, as I knew many who experienced it. When I contracted COVID-19 and miraculously gained back my sense of smell after just three days, I was relieved; until I realized that my sense of smell is distorted. While reading your post-Pesach issue featuring articles on challah and cake and the nostalgia that comes along with baking, I nodded my head in agreement. But once I entered the kitchen, put up my dough and whipped up some cake batters, the disappointment was great. The smell was, let’s just say, unpleasant. I’m assuming the essential oil therapy wouldn’t work for this. If anyone knows otherwise or knows of any different remedies that can help this issue, please let me know! Raizy B. THE BORO PARK VIEW RESPONDS: The essential oil smell therapy mentioned in the article should work for any impairment of the sense of smell. This includes dysosmia (smell distortion), whose symptoms you seem to be exhibiting.
YOUR VOICE A NEW PROJECT I’d like to bring to the attention of Boro Park residents a program that was recently put into effect at local groceries to help almanos. Accounts with the number 9999999 have been created in which individuals can deposit donations. These donations will then be credited to personal grocery accounts of widows in need. The beauty of this project is that besides the grocer and askanim, no one knows the identity of the donors or recipients. Grocery owners who’d like to inquire about setting up such an account at their store can reach out to one of the askanim behind this project at 347-581-7190 for more information. An Askan

* * * * * Hakadosh Baruch Hu defends the honor of His children. He defends one who is denigrated and offers them full support. Much like a parent who will feel hurt when he hears a negative report on his child even if it is true, Hashem is pained when a Yid talks negatively about another. After all, every Yid is a child of Hashem. Whenever a person talks badly or spreads rumors about another one of His children, Hakadosh Baruch Hu will stand up for the victim. The speaker is accordingly dealt a public punishment, a public embarrassment. As he suffers the process of quarantine and estrangement, he and everyone around him recognizes how far Hashem stands up for the person who’s been belittled.

A candid interview with “Ish Kerestir” Reb Moshe Yosef Friedlander regarding the massive Kvittel Campaign and the efforts to ensure that thousands of Yidden should be able to visit Kerestir to keep Klal Yisroel connected with Reb Yeshayala.
It is Monday, the day after Pesach, when we hopped on a call during the late-night hours here in New York. In Bodrogkeresztúr, the resting place of the holy tzaddik Reb Yeshayala Kerestirer, the sun is already rising and the roosters are crowing. It is a week to the yahrtzeit, and preparations are in full swing. Permits need to be finalized for the thousands of Yidden from all over the world who are yearning to pour their hearts out at the holy tzion on the day of the yahrtzeit. The final touches are also being completed for an advanced operation that will keep Klal Yisroel connected with Reb Yeshayala via special messengers who will bring kvitlach to the tzion free of charge. During these hectic moments, Reb Moshe Yosef, the “Ish Kerestir,” still found a few minutes to share his experiences with us. The moniker “Ish Kerestir” is well deserved. Reb Moshe Yosef is the originator of the current transformation in Kerestir. With his own two hands, he has revolutionized Kerestir, transforming the previously sleepy village into an integral stop on every Yid’s visit to Europe. He has singlehandedly built an empire of chesed and hachnasas orchim, which has become legendary worldwide. Even during the height of last year’s pandemic, when all travel was restricted, the doors to the tzion in Bodrogkeresztúr were never shut. Reb Moshe Yosef needed to ensure that every Yid can stay connected with Reb Yeshayala. Even so, it was almost unbelievable that Kerestir would be devoid of crowds. The village usually teems with hundreds of visitors, especially during the week of the yahrtzeit when tens of thousands of Yidden make the pilgrimage to daven at the holy tzion of Reb Yeshaya ben Reb Moshe.
62 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
How many people were actually able to go to the tzion last year?
There were maybe twenty people throughout the entire 24-hour period who were able to visit the tzion. Still, we did not get any rest that day. We had undertaken a massive kvittel operation. Every Yid who has any connection with Kerestir sent in a kvittel, and we had to ensure that every single one was read and placed at the tzion. We did not move away from the gravesite and were mispallel for yeshuos for all of Klal Yisroel. How did you manage to be allowed at the tzion last year?
With great difficulty and extreme international pressure. Baruch Hashem, in the end, I was allowed to visit the tzion. It was a great responsibility. I carried the weight of Klal Yisroel’s tefillos and approached the day with great trepidation. It must have been siyata d’Shmaya that I was able to go, and I am sure that all the prayers were answered. Were you able to make a yahrtzeit seudah?
Yes, but we did not even have a minyan. Only eight people were present. Can you imagine? Every year there are thousands upon thousands of Yidden in Kerestir. Rabbanim, roshei yeshivah and leaders of Klal Yisroel. Soul-stirring speeches, heartwarming songs, thousands of portions of food... it’s usually an incredible sight. But last year? We were eight people in a small apartment eating a modest meal and telling stories of the great Reb Ye-
shayala. But at least we can declare that Reb Yeshayala’s Guest House never ceased its operations. We were getting calls the entire time from all over the world. People were begging us to have them in mind and submit their requests. I am convinced that the zechus of Reb Yeshayala protected Klal Yisroel last year. Was the Guest House ever closed throughout this whole period?
Baruch Hashem, we can say that the doors of the Guest House were never shuttered. There was always someone there. Even if it was just one Yid, we made sure that there was freshly cooked food available. Reb Yeshayala used to be adamant that no one ever leaves Kerestir hungry. Unfortunately, some people tried coming in without a permit and were detained. We used all of our connections to help every Yid, and with thanks to Hashem and the zechus of Reb Yeshaya ben Reb Moshe, we were able to save many Yidden. What does the situation look like for the upcoming yahrtzeit?
Throughout the whole year, we worked on arranging more and more permits. B’chasdei Hashem, after some very intense efforts, we were able to arrange for thousands of permits so that Yidden should be able to come for the yahrtzeit. Our office is open 24 hours a day to process requests from Yidden all over the world; we just charge a minimal fee to cover the actual costs. This is done so Yidden can come and pour out their hearts in tefillah at the tzion of the holy tzaddik. Are these permits fully legal?
There is not a single person who was turned away when using the permits obtained through our office! How are the preparations this year different?
It’s never simple, but this year it has become a logistical nightmare to be able to get people and the necessary equipment to Kerestir. As soon as we felt that there was a possibility that thousands of Yidden would be able to visit, we prepared three full containers to ship to Kerestir. It was a big risk, and there was a big chance that all of the work would be for naught. But baruch Hashem, it all worked out. What will the actual yahrtzeit look like?
Reb Yeshayala’s Guest House is fully prepared to handle the thousands of visitors. There will be all of the usual accommodations: a beis midrash, mikvaos, sleeping accommodations, and of course, plenty of food.
Any closing words?
This year, preparing for the yahrtzeit entailed a lot of hard work, but I am proud that we were able to accomplish so much. Leading up to the yahrtzeit, there are two types of people: those who can make it and those who unfortunately can’t. For those who can make it, there will be the usual lavish accommodations. Every need will be taken care of. No expense was spared to ensure that every single visitor leaves sated and rested so they can focus on their tefillos and plead on behalf of themselves and Klal Yisroel. For those who unfortunately are unable to make the trip, we have also worked extremely hard to help them keep up their connection to Kerestir. We have spent large amounts of money to set up a very efficient system where people can send in kvitlach free of charge! It can be done either by phone or online, and we will have special envoys to ensure that everyone’s request gets placed at the tzion. We also have the opportunity for people to sponsor any of our many activities in Kerestir as a zechus for them or for a loved one. The whole operation costs an immense amount of money, and our only source of funds are your donations. With Hashem’s help, we will be the right sheluchim once again to be mispallel for yeshuos and hashpaos for everyone, as well as a complete geulah. CHAPTER 3 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi senses that there’s a stranger among his audience. He interrogates Yechiel, and when he proves his sincerity, instructs Yechiel as to how to sanctify himself to join the group.
Y
echiel’s assumption was accurate. It was indeed Gamliel Basnoun who had remained behind on the hilltop with Shabbesai Tzvi after all the others had gone. Only there was no anger at all in Shabbesai Tzvi’s voice as he spoke to Gamliel. “You are to be commended,” Shabbesai Tzvi was saying. “I merely followed the Master’s instructions.” “Ah, but you followed them precisely. That is a very valuable thing. When the time for action comes, it’s the people who’ve proved themselves reliable who’ll be called upon to carry forth the work of Heaven. I suspect that you, my good Gamliel, shall be among the chosen few.” “I’m always ready to serve you, Master. You need only call upon me.” “I sense a slight feeling of discomfort with what you’ve done, Gamliel. Almost as if you feel you’ve deceived and betrayed the boy. Is that so?” Gamliel averted his eyes. “Far be it from me to question the will of the Master,” he said quietly. “I see. Well then, my dear Gam-

liel, let me set your mind at ease. How does a father guide his child? Does he explain exactly what he’s doing? Or does he occasionally resort to subterfuge for the child’s own good? These men are like children. They must be guided carefully in the right direction. Do you understand?” Gamliel nodded. “Yechiel Tomashov is a bright fellow,” said Shabbesai Tzvi, “but he’s not a native of Smyrna like the others whom I’ve molded carefully over the years. He must come to us for the right reasons. He must be motivated by love for the Almighty and His people, not by curiosity and the thrill of the unknown. What we’ve done will help him, not harm him, Gamliel. Remorse and shame will purify his mind. Fasting and prayer will cleanse his soul. True, if he knew what we’ve done he’d be upset, but if he understood he’d be thankful. You have neither deceived him nor betrayed him. He owes you a debt of gratitude, Gamliel. Believe me, he owes you a debt of gratitude.” Gamliel Basnoun visibly relaxed. “Forgive me, Master, for doubting you in my heart, even for a moment,” he said. “Your vision is as
clear as the mountain air. I see now that the Master has devised this plan not only for the benefit of the boy from Poland, but for my own benefit as well.” A cunning gleam appeared in Shabbesai Tzvi’s eyes, and he laughed. “It is obvious you’re older than the others, my dear Gamliel. You’re a clever man, and you’ll go far.” He peered up at the sky. “The sun is already gathering its strength to climb over the mountaintops. I’d like to be back in the privacy of my home before it pulls away the dark veil of night. Come, let us walk back together.” As they walked along the coastline in the fading darkness, Shabbesai Tzvi spoke incessantly, and Gamliel Basnoun listened in respectful silence. Several fishermen interrupted their early morning preparations to point surreptitiously at the tall man in the white satin robes and whisper excitedly to one another. Shabbesai Tzvi watched them out of the corner of his eye and smiled with satisfaction. “Did you see those Greek fishermen whispering to one another, Gamliel?” he asked when they arrived at his home. “What do you think they were saying?” “I suspect they were repeating the rumors that circulate throughout Smyrna.” Shabbesai Tzvi raised his eye-
brows. “Rumors? What kind of rumors?” Gamliel drew a deep breath. “The rumors that a Jewish Messiah is soon to appear,” he said, “and that the Master is likely to fulfill that role.” “Indeed? Do you think they believe it?” “I hear the Greek priests have found old writings that predict great events for the years 1648 and 1666.” Shabbesai Tzvi nodded thoughtfully. “Well, the year 1648 has come and gone three years ago,” he said. “It was a horribly bloody year. Untold thousands of our Jewish brothers and sisters were murdered in Poland and the Ukraine. At the time, I proclaimed that these were the birth pangs of the coming of Moshiach, but when Moshiach didn’t come immediately, the people refused to believe it. Foolish people. Where is it written that he would arrive on the very next day? As to the year 1666, there are indeed allusions in our own Kabbalah that it will be a portentous year. And believe me, it will be. Oh yes, it will be. We are now in 1651. Fifteen years is not a long time to wait, my friend. Not when we’ve already waited fifteen hundred years.” Gamliel’s eyes bulged. He had never before heard Shabbesai Tzvi speak so openly about a specific date for the arrival of Moshiach. “Is it really to be then?” he asked in a hushed voice, his heart in his mouth. “Is it finally going to come in 1666?” Shabbesai Tzvi looked gravely at his companion and nodded his head. “Oh, praise Heaven!” exclaimed Gamliel with a sudden rush of joy he had never before experienced. Emboldened, he looked up into Shabbesai Tzvi’s face, and mustering all of his courage, he asked with hesitation, “Will it be the Master?” Shabbesai Tzvi swept his gaze away to the high mountains at the eastern extremity of the valley, where the first tentative tendrils of sunlight were curling over the peaks. When at last he turned back to Gamliel Basnoun, his eyes were aflame with an unearthly fire. “Yes!” he said in a whispered shout. Gamliel fell to the ground and covered the hem of Shabbesai Tzvi’s robe with kisses. “Yes! Yes! Yes!” continued Shabbesai Tzvi, speaking to no one in particular. “But I will have to struggle. Oh, how I will have to struggle! Never will I be able to rest in my battle against the forces of darkness. Every day, they crowd against me from all sides. Whenever I succeed in kindling the fires of joy, they rush forward to extinguish them. But a spark always remains. One day, I shall succeed in fanning that spark into a roaring flame that will consume the forces of darkness forever. Yes, that day will come. As surely as the sun rises over those mountains, that day will come.” He looked down at the form of Gamliel Basnoun, prostrate and trembling at his feet. For a moment, he seemed surprised to see him there. Then the expression on his face softened. He bent down and touched Gamliel on the shoulder. “Arise, my child,” he said. “There is much work to be done in preparation for that day. This evening you must visit the son of the banker from Warsaw. We must look toward the future, and someday in the future, this boy will be important. I know that your task is not an easy one, but always remember this, my dear Gamliel. Mine is the most difficult task of all.”

With these words, Shabbesai Tzvi disappeared into the doorway of his house. Gamliel went back to his room, emotionally exhausted but more elated than he had ever been. After quickly saying his prayers in his room, Gamliel fell into a deep slumber. When he awoke, it was well into the afternoon. He dressed with the languorous motions of one unaccustomed to daytime sleep and went to sit by the window. Children played carefree games in the street below. Mothers rocked small infants in their arms and chatted with each other as they kept a watchful eye on their frolicking children. Peddlers hawked their wares from wagons hitched to drowsy horses. It was a day like any other. Golden Smyrna, mused Gamliel. How fortunate you are. From among all of the other cities of the world, the Almighty has chosen you to give birth to His anointed king. The holy footsteps of Moshiach already grace your dusty streets. The great events that will shape the future of our people and the future of all humankind are already brewing right here in this valley between the mountains and the sea. Rejoice, good people of Smyrna, for you have been blessed. But until you learn of your good fortune, I shall rejoice for you. Pulling himself out of his reverie, he looked up at the sky. The day was fading away, the sun sinking heavily toward the sea beyond the gulf. He would not accomplish much this day on behalf of the poor of Yerushalayim, but before too long, they would not be needing his services ever again; before too long, Moshiach would put an end to poverty and want. Just fifteen more years. Fifteen short years. In the meantime, there was so much to be done. Right now, it was time to pay Yechiel Tomashov a visit. Gamliel filled his lungs with the salty air as he walked briskly through the streets of the Jewish quarter in the gathering dusk. He stopped in a small shul for the afternoon prayers. He asked permission to lead the prayers, and when he recited the prayer for the return to Yerushalayim, he began to sing and clap his hands in rhythmic accompaniment. The people in the shul exchanged

glances but did not seem especially surprised. Behavior of this sort was not unheard of among certain men of Smyrna. It was almost dark when Gamliel arrived at Yechiel’s room. Yechiel’s eyes were bloodshot, his face pale and drawn. “Yechiel, you look dreadful,” blurted Gamliel. “What happened?” “Nothing happened. I’m just exhausted, because I haven’t slept all day.” “Why not?” “Have you forgotten that I am supposed to be spending this day praying, learning and fasting?” “But you were awake most of last night. I’m quite certain it would have been all right for you to sleep for two or three hours. I’m sure the Master doesn’t want you to become ill.” Yechiel shook his head vehemently. “Don’t worry about me, Gamliel. I’m young and strong. I’ll survive these three days. I’m sorry you were reprimanded on my account last night, but the truth is that I had no business being there. Next time, I want my presence to be fully legitimate. I’ll follow the Master’s directions to the very last letter.” “I admire your determination, Yechiel, and I’ve no doubt you’ll be found worthy,” said Gamliel. He stood up. “The day is almost gone. As soon as it becomes dark, you must say your evening prayers, eat something and go to sleep. I’ll try to stop by tomorrow.” “Thank you, Gamliel. You’re a true friend.” “Good night, Yechiel. Sleep well.” Sleep eluded Yechiel for a long time that night. He lay in bed awake, watching the shifting shadows on the ceiling of his room. The previous night’s traumatic encounter and the day spent in intensive prayer and fasting had unlocked a hidden reservoir of exotic sensations. In a sense, he felt as if he’d stepped back from his previous existence. All of his physical surroundings seemed to have an aura of distance about them. Even Gamliel, sitting on a chair within arm’s reach, had seemed to be speaking from the end of a tunnel. He felt as if his soul were partially detached from his body, ready to soar through the heavens, if only it were told where to go. Yechiel was happy. He would prepare his soul, and Shabbesai Tzvi would guide its flight through the heavens.

Yang Hits Toys 4 U to Shoot Campaign Footage Mayoral hopeful Andrew Yang spent time last Friday in the heart of Boro Park, shooting footage for upcoming advertisements at Toys 4 U, talking to storeowner Yossi Itzkowitz and mingling with passersby as they made their way down 13th Avenue. BoroPark 24 reported that Yang enjoyed the Erev Shabbos rush, and his Jewish community outreach director David Schwartz said that the candidate values Boro Park’s contributions to the city at large. “Yang takes the Jewish community very seriously,” observed Schwartz. “He wants to include the Orthodox Jewish community in his ... ads because he sees us as partners in the coalition he is building. Yang wants the Jewish community to be included in his broader message.” Yang was reportedly impressed when he was shown a set of Mitzvah Kinder, appreciating the value of toys custommade for a community that shies away from technology. Onlookers took advantage of this opportunity to thank Yang for his support of yeshivos and businesses, appreciating the visit from a serious mayoral contender. “It is unusual for our community to be included in such ads,” said one. “Yang was proud to be with us, and many people on the street stopped him to express their support.”

Lawmakers Call for Investigation of Airlines’ Anti-Semitic Behavior Local and state lawmakers are calling on the Federal Aviation Administration, the United States Department of Transportation, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to launch investigations into multiple incidents of alleged discriminatory behavior targeting Orthodox Jewish fliers. Last month, Frontier Airlines forced an entire planeload of passengers heading to New York to deplane in Miami after confronting a chassidic couple whose eighteen-monthold baby was not wearing a mask, even though airline policy only requires children aged two and up to wear a proper face covering. According to VIN News, Frontier said that the
New York Community Hospital One Step Closer to Becoming Maimonides Subsidiary Just months after signing an affiliation agreement, New York Community Hospital is well on its way to becoming a subsidiary of Maimonides Medical Center. The New York State Public Health and Health Planning Council approved a Certificate of Need (CON) application last week, greenlighting the partnership between Maimonides and the 134-bed NYCH, which has been serving Flatbush-area residents since 1929, reported Hamodia. By becoming a subsidiary of Maimonides, the largest hospital in Brooklyn and an affiliate of Northwell Health, NYCH patients will have better access to a wider array of medical and surgical specialty services. The hospitals are also working jointly to develop an infusion suite at NYCH

incident stemmed from adults in a large group refusing to wear masks, but video taken by passengers show the chassidic couple and their family members all wearing masks. Passengers on the plane said that they saw flight attendants high-fiving each other as passengers were removed from the plane, gleefully saying, “A job well done to those Jews.” In another incident that took place last week, a New Jersey couple flying home from Orlando after Pesach were told

to leave a Spirit flight because their two-year-old daughter was unmasked while eating a container of yogurt, even though airline regulations allow passengers to take off their masks while eating. All passengers were removed from the flight when the couple refused to leave, insisting they had done nothing wrong, but were ultimately reboarded a short time later. Local elected officials have been vocal in their outrage, with Assembly members Simcha Eichenstein, Daniel Rosenthal and Amy Paulin, and State Senator Simcha Felder all blasting the airlines for targeting Jewish families and their children. “Spirit and Frontier airlines have shown a reprehensible pattern of discrimination, which cannot be allowed to stand,” said Eichenstein. “Their repeated targeting of Orthodox Jewish passengers for supposed mask noncompliance is unacceptable and must be investigated by the Federal Aviation Administration and the Port Authority.” Felder has already escalated concerns about the Frontier incident to the federal level, reaching out to Senator Chuck Schumer and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg to ensure that airlines enforce their rules fairly and without bias. He encouraged anyone who has been subject to mistreatment by airline personnel to file an official complaint with the Department of Transportation and to share a copy of the complaint with his office. “We will not allow hate, intolerance or anti-Semitism to motivate gross violations of anti-discrimination laws,” said Felder. “This incident, and all others like it, must be investigated immediately and airlines held accountable if their staff removed innocent passengers from their flights.”

Motorists can expect to pay more for the privilege of driving in the city now that new toll rates are in effect at Metropolitan Transportation Author-
ity crossings, with the news going from bad to worse as congestion pricing takes one step closer to reality. The MTA may be seeing as much as $24 million in additional revenue each year under the new tolling rates, which have E-ZPass prices jumping from $6.12 to $6.55 and up to $8.36 for drivers whose tags are incorrectly mounted, a new rate constructed to cover the cost of verifying vehicle registrations. A 67-cent increase was put into effect at MTA bridges and tunnels for those who pay their tolls by mail, with the only reprieve given to Staten Island EZPass holders with prices kept steady at the Verrazzano Bridge. But driving in Manhattan could become even more costly. The Biden administration has given Albany the go-ahead to conduct an environmental assessment and a public outreach effort for a potential congestion pricing plan that could have motorists traveling anywhere from 60th Street south through Battery Park paying a once-daily toll ranging from $10 to $15. According to NBC News, both the FDR Drive and the West Side Highway would be exempt from the toll, as would those who live in the congestion zone and people who earn less than $60,000 per year. The plan, which is intended to reduce traffic and pollution while encouraging people to use mass transit, could generate $15 billion for the MTA and could affect over 700,000 motorists each day. New Jersey lawmakers were less than happy with the news, saying it would double tax their constituents, who are already paying significant tolls to enter New York, reported WCBS Newsradio 880. Congressman Josh Gottheimer has said that New Jerseyans coming into Manhattan via the George Washington Bridge or the Lincoln and Holland tunnels should be exempt from congestion pricing or at least get a tax credit for any additional tolls. He has dubbed his proposed Anti-Congestion Tax Act the “Manhattan Moocher Prevention Act.” “Once again, North Jersey is getting stuck with the short end of the stick,” observed Congressman Bill Pascrell. “We need a real comprehensive environmental review on the impact for our stakeholders.”

CHAPTER THREE RECAP: Osher
has disappeared, leaving just a note and a message that he’s gone somewhere up north to a yeshivah that’s “a better place” for him. His mother is relying on Ariella, Osher’s older sister who has a strong rapport with him, to find out about his whereabouts.
Osher has joined Reb Elazar’s out-of-the-box yeshivah program.
“A
riella?” Mindy Kagan lifted her pencil off her paper. “I don’t understand where the x of this equation goes.” “Here,” her private tutor replied, pointing to a spot on the page. “Here? But that’s the second question, and I’m still on the first.” “Oy, you’re right,” Ariella said. “So what did you ask?” Mindy looked at her, baffled. “Where should the x go?” “In which question?” Mindy took a deep breath. “The first one.” “Oh.” Ariella lowered her eyes to the page. Zichron Yaakov. Hadera. Haifa. Tzefas. Teveriah. Acco. Rosh Pinah. Nahariyah. Which part of the “north” had Osher gone to? She drummed the blue eraser on the table and pictured a map of Eretz Yisroel in her mind. Assuming that Osher had not crossed the border into Syria, where had he been speaking from? He didn’t sound carefree and calm. The sudden silence, the cut-off conversation… She’d need to sit with her father, mother, Shoshi and Lakey and milk them for every shred of information that might shed some light on this very bewildering situation. Which yeshivah could he have gone to that encouraged keeping his family completely out of the loop? The eraser fell to the floor, and Ariella bent down to pick it up. “Listen, Mindy,” she said when she sat back up. She passed a hand over her forehead. “What are your plans for today?” “Me? Well, I have to finish studying for my test, and I have to help my mother, and I want to read a library book…” “So would you mind moving ‘finish studying for the test’ to the end of the list?”
THE BORO PARK VIEW / 85
“What do you mean?” “Go home and help your mother now, read your book, and then come back at seven. We’re almost done with the material, and within an hour, an hour and a half at most, we’ll finish it, b’ezras Hashem.” “And then you will be able to study with me?” Mindy asked, her eyes sparkling with clever wit. Ariella smiled. “B’ezras Hashem, yes,” she said. “If that’s okay with you.” She walked Mindy to the door. When she came back to the table, she pushed aside all of her old math books and placed a sheet of paper on the table. TO FIND OUT, she scrawled in large letters on the top. Then, after a pause, she made a list: Did something happen in yeshivah the previous weekend, or recently at all? What did Osher say during that last Shabbos at home? What did he say to his friends before he left? Did anyone see him walking/traveling/waiting at a bus stop? Did they notice anything unusual? She folded the paper into a small, flat rectangle that she slid into her wallet. Then she glanced at the clock and left the house. A short, focused visit to her parents, and she’d be back in time for the lesson with Mindy. Her parents were worried — though not that worried that they felt like contacting the police, because they knew their son. He’d disappeared for a day or two in the past; sometimes he left messages, and other times he didn’t. It was hard to know what Osher was going through; he never spoke much, even when he used to come back. Poor him. Poor them. And they had all hoped so much that at Rav Steinhaus’s yeshivah, Daas Torah, he would finally find the right path. Ariella knocked once and then opened the door. “Ariella!” Her mother was happy to see her. “What a nice surprise! Isn’t today your long day, when you have students all afternoon? Or are you still recovering from your trip?” “I actually started tutoring again, but slowly,” Ariella replied. “I had one student today.” And I stopped in the middle of our lesson. “I’m glad you came. What can I give you to eat? Something warm from lunch?” “No, thanks. I ate pretty late today, and I’m still full. I wanted to talk to you about Osher, Mommy.” Her mother’s smile disappeared as she went back to polishing the fleishig faucet. “About the letter I got from him this morning?” “Letter? I didn’t know about a letter.” “I thought Lakey or Shoshi told you about it. A letter?” She smiled bitterly. “A note is more like it. Green with black and blue leaves again. He wrote…” She leaned on the counter. “That he is learning Torah and that everything is fine. That’s it.” “Very short.” “Osher never liked writing at length.” “Yes…” She opened the fridge. Although she’d said she wasn’t hungry, she was looking for something without knowing what it was. Maybe a bit of air. “He called me, too, Mommy. Last night. But he didn’t say anything new, only that I should tell you that he is somewhere up north and that we shouldn’t worry.” “When did he call?” Her mother opened her eyes wide. “Late last night. Can I have some of this carrot salad, Mommy? Does it have garlic?” “Yes, take a plate from the cabinet. Do you want crackers with it?” “Sure, thanks.” Ariella sat down. “How is it that I find myself eating here even when I’m not hungry? It happens every time… I guess if I see your carrot salad, Mommy, I just can’t resist.” “The garlic is very good for your hoarseness. When did you visit the speech therapist last?” “A few months ago. But that’s not important; I’m more concerned about Osher than about myself right now. Tatty spoke to his mashgiach, right?” Her mother opened her mouth to protest her daughter’s blasé attitude about her own self-care, but decided to suffice with a chiding smile, and replied, “Yes.”

“And what did he say?” “I told you already... that Osher came to tell him that he was leaving to try out a different yeshivah, and thank you and kol tuv.” “I imagine the mashgiach asked him which yeshivah he was switching to.” “Right. And Osher didn’t answer. Then he asked him what his parents had to say about it, and Osher didn’t answer that either.” Strings of orange carrot got caught in the tines of Ariella’s fork; more than she was eating, she just kept twisting the fork this way and that. “Did Tatty speak to the mashgiach again after that?” “He sure did. After Osher called, Tatty contacted the mashgiach to try to figure out what has been going on recently.” “Nu?” “The mashgiach said that Osher had actually been learning pretty well lately and had attended shiur, but he didn’t look happy. He said that Osher is a good boy…” She hesitated. “And that in general, he can be trusted. But still, he added that if it didn’t work out for Osher in this new place, it was not certain that they would take him back.” “That’s understandable… What else did he say?” “That’s it.” Her mother sighed. “I think that Tatty should go down there and talk to some of the bachurim, like Osher’s roommates. Maybe he said something a little more specific to one of them. Maybe they can help
us track him down.” “Yes, Tatty thought of that himself.” “One second, Mommy.” As usual, her mind jumped from one thing to the next, trying to cover the entire gamut of possible options. “The letter came in the mail? With a stamp?” “Yes. We checked it. No north, no nothing. It came from Bnei Brak.” “So is he in northern Bnei Brak, or what?”
It was hard to know what Osher was going through; he NEVER SPOKE much, even when he used to come back. Poor him. Poor them. They looked at one another, their faces mirroring each other’s confusion. ***** The principal of the Abu Usmiya school did not come back; he must have accepted the truant officer’s opinion that there was no chance of the schools merging. A different Arab showed up the next day. The carpentry shop was closed, as

it usually was at that hour, but someone opened the door for him on the second floor. “You’ve got a nice view here,” the guest began, leaning on the wall of the house and gazing out at the horizon. “That’s right. Baruch Hashem.” “And the porch there probably has an even better view. Is this your house, or is it a rental?” “It’s mine,” the person replied courteously, with a pleasant smile. “Why?” “Because I want to buy it.” “Are you a contractor?” “A real estate developer.” They seemed to be competing as to who could smile more broadly. “And why do you want to buy it?” “I want to buy this house, and all the houses in this row. I want to build a hotel here.” The Arab looked toward the sea again, to the little boats bobbing on the dark waves. “I want lots of space, lots and lots of space. For a large parking lot, storage rooms and a big park. You know, guests like to be in such a place…” His right hand moved in a circular motion, encompassing the entire area. “I’m sorry,” the owner of the house said, after waiting politely for the monologue to come to an end. “But I’m not selling.” “Not selling?” The Arab’s grin wavered and then disappeared. “Why not?” “Because I also like...” The man mimicked the Arab’s circular motion. “To be in such a place.” “But it’s an old house. What’s it worth to you?” the guest scoffed. “This floor you renovated, so it’s almost new, but for what I’ll pay you, you can buy a house that’s a thousand times nicer.” His voice rose. “It’s worth it for you, Mr. Reiness!” The man shook his head. “Sorry,” he said. “I’m not selling the house at this time.” “At this time? When will you be selling?” The grin returned. “Sir, the subject is not up for discussion.” “Why not? Maybe I can come in and explain to you —” “I’m sorry, but I’m in a hurry now. And believe me, it would be a waste of your time.” “You’re sure about it? You’re not selling?” “I’m not selling.” “And if I come again in a week?” “Reb Elazar?” A swarthy boy emerged from the house, and then retreated when he saw that he’d interrupted a conversation. “Oh, sorry. I didn’t mean to disturb you. I just wanted… oh, it doesn’t matter.” “It certainly does matter. I’m coming, Osher.” Reb Elazar turned back to the Arab who was still standing there, taking in the sea and the beach with his eyes, as if this were the only spot in the world from where they could be seen. “I’m sorry, sir, but I need to go. I wish you lots of success. Maybe try to find some other property. Our Acco is big enough.” “There are lots of places where the municipality won’t allow it,” the man said dejectedly. It sounded like genuine despair. “Was it genuine?” Sarah asked him that evening, when he related the incident to her. “Absolutely. Not that it changes my plans, but it calmed me a bit. Because I always feel pressured when I get these kinds of offers, you know.” Yes, she knew.

Defense Secretary Austin Visits Israel
yahu warned that Israel would not be bound by a new treaty. Secretary Austin plans on visiting Yad Vashem and the Netafim army base in Northern Israel.
THE PULSE: Defense Secretary Llyod Austin arrived in Israel for discussions with his Israeli counterparts on Iran and other regional issues. After meeting with Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz, Secretary Austin said that “our commitment to Israel is enduring and ironclad.” He mentioned that last week “we all took time to remember the Holocaust” and that the memory of the six million should “be a blessing and solemn reminder of our duty to be ever vigilant against mass atrocities.” Gantz said that Israel views the United States as a full partner in combating regional threats, including the threat from Iran. He thanked the Biden administration for “supporting Israel and opposing the recent decision taken by the ICC.” Austin served for four years as head of U.S. Central Command, making him exceptionally wellversed in Middle East defense issues.
John Boehner Takes On the New GOP
THE IMPACT: Austin’s visit is the first cabinet-level visit to Israel by a Biden administration member. According to Yoel Guzansky, a senior fellow at a Tel Aviv–based think tank, the visit is meant to show that “They want to listen to Israel’s worries and perhaps other partners’ worries about the negotiation about Iran.” Austin’s visit comes as the U.S. has begun talks in Vienna about reentry into the Iran Nuclear Deal. Prime Minister Netan-

THE PULSE: Former Speaker of the House John Boehner released excerpts of his upcoming book entitled On the House — A Washington Memoir. Boehner minced no words in attacking the GOP’s current state and said that the party is unrecognizable to traditional conservatives like himself. He wrote that he is happy to be out of politics and that “I don’t even think I could get elected in today’s Republican Party anyway. I don’t think Ronald Reagan could either.” Boehner blamed former President Trump for the January 6th insurrection and said, “He claimed voter fraud without any evidence,” and that Trump’s “refusal to accept the result of the election not only cost Republicans the Senate but led to mob violence.” Boehner focused particular ire toward Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), whom he called “reckless.” He accused Cruz of “thinking that he was smarter than everyone else.” Boehner said that Cruz was a “perfect symbol, you know, of getting elected, making a lot of noise, draw a lot of attention to yourself, raise a lot of money, which means you’re gonna go make more noise, raise more money.” Boehner had strong words for Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), whom he

called a “political terrorist.” He said that “I have never seen a guy who spent more time tearing things apart and never building anything.” He referred to conservative pundits Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh as residents of “looneyville” and expressed regret about the House impeachment of President Clinton, which he called purely political. Senator Cruz hit back at Boehner and said that “the swamp is unhappy.” THE IMPACT: Boehner’s book is the
latest salvo in the interparty fighting plaguing the GOP, which pits the conservative old guard against the populist pro-Trump wing of the party. The interparty battle was also on display earlier in the week in Palm Beach, Florida. Addressing a Republican dinner at Mar-a-Lago, Trump blasted Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and expressed his disappointment with former VP Mike Pence. The GOP is at crossroads with two wings of the party battling for future control of the party. The infighting may make it more difficult for Republicans to mount an effective challenge to Democrats in the 2022 midterm elections.
Biden to Meet With Bipartisan Group of Lawmakers to Discuss Infrastructure THE PULSE: President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are set to meet with a bipartisan group of lawmakers to discuss the president’s infrastructure proposal. In an interview with Chris Wallace of Fox News, Senator John Thune (R-SD) noted that some Republicans might get behind the
infrastructure proposal. “If they are sincere about doing something on infrastructure, I think there are Republicans who would vote for it,” Thune said. However, he criticized the current plan as being mostly unrelated to infrastructure and noted that “the plan that you heard Secretary Buttigieg talk about is a massive expansion of government.” THE IMPACT: President Biden cam-
paigned as a candidate who could reach out effectively across the aisle. So far, he has been unable to do that, and much of his agenda has been implemented by executive action or on purely partisan party-line votes. Historically, infrastructure has been something that has drawn bipartisan support. It remains to be seen if Biden can capitalize on his experience as a deal-making senator and negotiate a bill that can receive bipartisan support.
Prosecution Makes Its Case in Derek Chauvin Trial THE PULSE: This past week, the
prosecution made the case against Derek Chauvin, the Minneapolis police officer who stands accused of the murder of George Floyd. Chauvin is facing charges of second- and thirddegree murder and second-degree manslaughter. The prosecution called experts in the field for testimony on Chauvin’s actions. Jody Stiger, an expert at the LAPD, said that Floyd was subdued and cuffed, and therefore “no force should have been used” against him. Richard Zimmerman, an officer in the Minneapolis Police Department, said that Chauvin’s actions were “totally unnecessary.” Minneapolis
Police Chief Medaria Arradondo called Floyd’s death “murder” and said that “To continue to apply that level of force to a person proned-out, handcuffed behind their back, that in no way, shape or form is anything that is by policy.” Dr. Martin Tobin, a pulmonary specialist, testified that Floyd died from a lack of oxygen and not fentanyl. He said that “Mr. Floyd died from a low level of oxygen, and this caused damage to his brain that we see. And it also caused a PEA [pulseless electrical activity] arrhythmia that caused his heart to stop.” Tobin said that Floyd’s respiratory rate was twenty-two and that if fentanyl were affecting Floyd, it would have dropped his respiratory rate to around ten. Tobin instructed jurors to place their hands on their necks to understand what he was describing. The defense asked Tobin, “Do any of those [preexisting] conditions [that Floyd suffered from] have anything to do with the cause of Mr. Floyd’s death in your professional opinion whatsoever?” Tobin responded, “None whatsoever.” THE IMPACT: The defense will try to
make the case that Chauvin acted according to protocol and that other factors contributed to Chauvin’s death. However, the testimony to date creates difficulty for the defense. Some have argued that the wall-to-wall press coverage of Floyd’s death makes it nearly impossible to seat a genuinely impartial jury in Minneapolis. The verdict, in this case, will have far-reaching implications for race relations in this country. It will also highlight the potential for those in positions of power to abuse their authority. All Americans, both Democrats who make racial justice a priority and Republicans who are wary of government overreach and abuse of authority, have a vested interest in seeing that justice is served.
Now that the dust has settled after the elections, this column is winding to a close. We hope it has been enlightening and gratifying to have your finger on our country’s political pulse. 96 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / April 14, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770

AS WE MARK THIS SUBDUED PERIOD OF REMEMBRANCE, THE MELODIES FILLING SIMCHA AND BANQUET HALLS FEATURE VOCALS ONLY. HERE WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE CHALLENGES A CAPPELLA SINGING PRESENTS. Disclaimer: There are many rabbanim who pasken that a cappella arrangements are prohibited. While this article presents what goes into creating these vocal arrangements and provides some halachic background, please consult your dayan for any halachic rulings.
THE BORO PARK VIEW / 111
Listening to music is prohibited during the days of sefirah, with each community and kehillah following their mesorah in regard to which days and weeks this minhag applies. Without exploring all halachic aspects, it is noteworthy that nothing about this is mentioned explicitly in the writings of our poskim until the last generation. The reason? Essentially, recreational music is forbidden all year round since the days of the Beis Hamikdash’s destruction. The Gemara (Maseches Gittin 7a) teaches us that we are not allowed to enjoy music after the churban. This ban appears to apply to playing, listening and even singing. However, the early commentators already debated whether this ban applies in all circumstances. Over time, it slowly became accepted for music to be played and enjoyed without restriction. Many have worked to find halachic justifications for this leniency. According to the Magen Avraham, dancing is assur during the days of sefirah. Rav Moshe Feinstein, zt”l, was among the leading poskim who wrote that music should not be listened to during these weeks as part of this prohibition. While he did not include a ban on vocal arrangements, others — including the Shevet Halevi — wrote that even a cappella music is prohibited. (Inquire with your rav for personal direction.) 112 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / April 14, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
SINGING A CAPPELLA
The sefirah music industry is an interesting one. In a world where even regular albums have a difficult time turning a profit, these niche productions, which are enjoyed for only a few weeks each year, face even greater obstacles. On the other hand, expenses are significantly reduced without instruments present, and choirs renowned for their vocal abilities can use these opportunities to make their mark and promote their brand. To learn more about how a cappella albums come together, we spoke with one of the most prominent names in the industry: Yoely Polatseck, founder and music arranger for the Zemiros Choir. Yoely, who studied music theory professionally and has helped train many familiar faces in the field, has unsurprisingly been a leader in a cappella music production, having released his own 27-track Kolos Im Zemiros album back in 2013. He was also the only one to

produce a solo vocal track for Avraham Fried and Yaakov Shwekey. “When recording a vocal album, every tiny detail stands out, and you have to be truly flawless in your arrangements and singing,” he says. “There are no loud instruments to save you, so every little nuance is much more pronounced.” We asked Yoely about the origins of this niche industry. “Groups of men singing in synergy without music has always been common in our community, from the Rebbe’s tisch to yom tov davening in shul. It may have only become commercialized in the past two decades, but the performances and skills have always been there.” Yet when producing an album, the demands are much greater and winging it is not really an option. As he explains it, there are two types of a cappella albums. The first utilizes beatboxing (drum or percussion sounds performed with the mouth) to fill the background of each track and provide an experience that mimics traditional songs set to drums. This is considered less refined in many circles and also does not feel as authentic an expression of musical art. The second type employs vocals exclusively to recreate the gauntlet of sounds that make up a properly arranged song.

In the heimish community, the latter form of a cappella has become widely accepted. Yoely and his group sing the melody and chords separately, as well as vocally fill in the accompaniments that would otherwise be produced by different instruments. These include brass and string instruments, and even the bassline — that low-pitched, groovy bass-guitar sound that is the foundation of every song’s chord progression. Because the vocals need to be more powerful in the absence of music, the vocal recordings may be multiplied to create a more full sound. The choir hears the song’s actual music while singing to keep them in rhythm, and the mixing (balancing and combining the various sounds) is similar to what can be expected from a regular music album. For live events, like sefirah-season bar mitzvahs or events where a family member is in the year of aveilus, the challenges are different. In the world of choirs, Zemiros is widely known as the most meticulous in its rigid application of music theory, and this edge comes in handy at live events. While a couple of choir members sing the melody, others sing
the harmonic intervals like the third and fifth notes and combine to produce the set of sounds that makes up the chords of each song. Yoely explains that as head of his choir, he has always sought out singers whose voices are ideal for their task, whether it is the lower or higher harmony. When performing at a sefirah event, this is even more important than usual, with each voice highlighted exponentially. More than once, it has happened that attendees at an event complimented the choir and asked who the musician was, not realizing that the performance didn’t include any musical instruments at all. The choir often utilizes finger snapping or foot stomping, both to provide a more rhythmic sound and also to offer a natural feel of how people in a group actually sing in the real world. For some events, if the family’s rav allows it, a drum machine will also be employed, giving the choir a significant rhythmic boost.

WEDDING NIGHTS IN YERUSHALAYIM
About 150 years ago, a terrible cholera outbreak ravaged the residents of Yerushalayim, claiming the lives of many, including some notable rabbanim of that era. Harav Mayer Auerbach, zt”l, the Rosh Beis Din of the Ashkenazi community and well known as the author of the Imrei Binah, did a shailas chalom, where he inquired about the reason for the pandemic and how to stop it. He awoke to the words of a pasuk in Shir Hashirim that allude to Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s pain over the absence of His permanent home. Harav Auerbach asked mekubalim about the meaning behind this vision and was told that the outbreak came because the Yerushalayim community continued to enjoy music at festive weddings while the Beis Hamikdash sat in ruins. The Rav then announced, with the backing of many other leading rabbanim and tzaddikim, an edict that no music can be performed at weddings in the Holy City. At least this is what legend tells us. However, some respected authors of seforim and writers have pointed out that there aren’t any early sources that corroborate this account, and the first place where the minhag is mentioned altogether is only years later, when Harav Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, zt”l, wrote about this minhag that he had heard in the name of the Imrei Binah. Based on more recent research and their conversations with a number of revered elders of Yerushalayim, the authors conclude that it’s more likely that the ban was instituted for tznius reasons, and that the relationship to the churban Beis Hamikdash was established slowly over time. With the uncertain origins of this ban, it is unsurprising that the minhagim vary greatly. Like other minhagei Yerushalayim, it is practiced by true Yerushalmis and not by those who moved to the city. Sefardim and non-Chareidi communities do not adhere to this ban at all; among those who do, many accept having just one instrument, including the option of a keyboard. Most typical, however, is the minhag to have just a drum and singing at weddings with true Yerushalmi chein. There are also many disagreements over whether the ban applies only to the Old City, and a conversation over whether recorded music is included. At this point it appears that clarity will be achieved only upon Moshiach’s arrival, at which time the sounds of music will once again fill the streets of Yerushalayim. As Yirmiyahu Hanavi promised us: Od yishama b’arei Yehuda uv’chutzos Yerushalayim, kol sasson v’kol simcha, kol chassan v’kol kallah.

SHAYALE:
“Freigt di Gemara...” My singsong ricochets off the walls. Will everyone else also hear the emptiness? I sit on his bed, yet he is gone. Outside the wind howls angrily, a lion preparing to fight, but I feel only the cold, the sharp cold that gnaws at my very bones. Soon I will stand up to speak, soon I will be brave and smile, soon I will no longer be able to talk to him. “Tatty,” I whisper into the darkness, “hold my hand.” But the whirring of the washing machine is my only answer. I hold his favorite sweater close to my nose, smelling old books and orange taffies, and let the thick wool muffle my sobs. Does he miss me? “Shayale, the photographer is here!” I head down the stairs and hope my tear streaks are gone. * * * * *
A quiet happiness settles on the hall. Lilac-colored orchids stand tall in the center of each table like proud monarchs of the event, and their perfume mingles with the smell of roast chicken. Voices rise and fall, footsteps clicking on the shiny floor. I square my shoulders, kiss the mezuzah. My eyes roam the head table, catch sight of the empty seat. Tatty. Then I run to the bathroom and breathe as memories roil in my mind like crashing waves.
120 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
It’s the last time I see him. His face is pale but lit up with a giant smile. His navy plaid pajamas are hanging on him, his wheelchair is creaking, and he seems a hundred years old. “Coronavirus complications,” the orderly chirps, wild red curls swaying cheerfully. “He’ll be back home soon.” But he never does come home. The jagged hole ripped in my shirt, in my heart. People coming and going, a blur of color and hushed tones. And me sitting there, down so very low, one thought drumming through the haze. Would anyone remember my bar mitzvah, only a few months away? My classmates treat me with kid gloves, though I want nothing less. The cupboards are bursting full of Tatty’s stuff, testimony to the powerful life that had sung within. And the gasping void remains, bleeding over everything...
The floorboards creak next door, and I step back into the hall. It is time to be a man, man of the night.
ZELDY: What’s that noise? Oh no, Great-Aunt Yochie has started tsk-tsking once again and doesn’t look anywhere near done. “Such young yesoimelech,” she whispers dramatically, her rings glinting like tears. I concentrate intently on the salmon cubes, salmon cubes dotted with sesame seeds. The appetizer is beautiful; Goldy had been so right about the lettuce
tower. My heart constricts. Yidel had hated teriyaki sauce. The hall is full, teeming with women, buzzing with conversation and joy, yet I have never felt so alone. I paste on a smile for Simy Green, but not before the image of last night pops into my mind. Shayale creeps into my bedroom, padding softly on the carpet. I look into his baby blue eyes, at the raw pain and loneliness. He is too young to be wearing his father’s tefillin. I wish I could protect him from the harsh nightmare his life has become. “Ma,” he says, his voice strong, “I’m going to continue in Tatty’s ways. I will make you both proud.” I cradle my little-big boy, grateful the room is shrouded by night. I feel his words fight the hole of grief that threatens to suck me down into its black depths. I just miss Yidel so much.
“Mazel tov, Zeldy! You look gorgeous.” It’s time to slip on the mask of nonchalance. “Simy!” I say. “Thank you so much for the petit fours.”
KALMY FRENKEL: Wow, a busy week is coming up. We have the Nayman chasunah, the Fulda bar mitzvah, and two sheva brachos. I lift my eyes heavenward and thank Hashem for His outpouring of blessings. The coronavirus had wiped us off the map for a while and it had been a struggle, but we’d learned to sing for ourselves, melodies of emunah and joy reverberating in our homes and hearts. A text message pings as I settle on the couch with a steaming cocoa. Annoyed, I jab the silent tab but not before catching sight of the reminder. PINES BAR MITZVAH
The phone clangs to the floor. I didn’t see it, not really. I ache for this one night of peace. It had been a sweet idea, planted with a seed of sudden inspiration, but now it seems more like an aggravating weed. To get ready, persuade the choir to do this pro bono… Would Shayale really notice the difference? It had been Rena’s brainchild. She had rushed home from the supermarket, face flushed with excitement, hands full of bursting bags. “So strong,” she had exclaimed as tomato sauce dribbled messily onto the carpet. “Zeldy

says he’s the only one in the family not to have music by his bar mitzvah, yet he keeps saying this is min HaShamayim…” I think of the bewildered face of the youngest orphan on that gray day just a few months ago. The vacant look in his eyes, as if searching for the pillar in his life. I imagine the strength it takes to get out of bed each morning, and I am awed at how he chooses to face the world and smile even as his heart yearns. “Rena,” I call, “have you seen my tie?”
SHAYALE: The hall is full; there’s conversation and laughter and the clinking of china. Yet somehow, beneath it all, something’s missing. I drum my fingers mindlessly, scattering flaky crumbs. I wish there would be music. Then I could allow myself to fly on wings of song to our island of dreams. Every Motzei Shabbos, Tatty would sit with me and play music, his hands dancing on the ivory keys. His playing was the most beautiful I’ve heard. Or we’d listen to our favorite CDs. The dusty attic would be transformed into our palace, and all of my insecurities would disappear as we raised our voices and sang, souls bonding, hands held close together. The waiter pats my shoulder roughly. “Chicken or schnitzel?” But my answer is drowned out as I blink, then blink again. The hall gasps. They stand in a tight semi-circle and open their mouths to create magic. My face splits into a huge grin. The Zemer Choir, at my bar mitzvah! After Zelly Eckstein’s splash, it had been all everyone could speak about. I dash a quick look at Ma — Did she know? — but her face holds a startled expression that mirrors mine. All is silent. Then they begin, fusing together to create a vocal tapestry of melody and longing. “Tniyeleh…” That had been our last song together. I close my eyes, and we are in our secret spot again. His song lives on, his legacy lighting our paths even as we fumble in the shadows. When they pass me the microphone, I close my eyes and feel my father’s presence, strong and enduring. I love you, Shayale, he whispers. And my voice soars until the heavens.

You surely know how it is to wake up hoarse after a late night of singing or vocal exertion. And you’ve probably noticed that you can’t hide that deep morning voice when waking up to a phone call from your mother-in-law. Perhaps you’ve wondered why chazanim and professionals always sing with a straight back? For most of us, singing is just something we do — for better or for worse. Like running or riding a bike, we don’t pay much attention to how our bodies perform this amazing feat. But producing sounds, even of the conversational variety, requires a coordinated task that remains unnoticed until something goes wrong. And then, it’s time to go see a voice therapist. Within the field of speech-language pathology, there are many subfields of expertise. To learn more about our topic du jour, I spoke with Shlomo Holtzberg, a licensed speech therapist who has made a name as an expert on voice and voice-related problems. “The vocal folds, or what people call vocal cords, are two bands of muscle that vibrate as air passes through them, producing the sound recognized as our voice,” he explains. “It is basically a

musical instrument, and as such, even a minor or delicate anatomical issue will show up in the quality of sound.” This helps explain why our voices sound different when we’re tired, sick or otherwise not at our best. Shlomo is often contacted by those who use their voice a lot and suffer from irritation, pain, loss of voice and the like.
The muscle analogy is not just a metaphor; it is accurate and oh-so relevant. An example: When Shlomo mentioned that vocal athletes should sip some water every ten to fifteen minutes during peak performance times, we understood it to mean that keeping the vocal cords moist will help them do their job better. Turns out, the water we drink passes down our esophageal tube and does not come into contact with our vocal box at all. Instead, the water helps keep the body and muscles hydrated, in the same way that runners or athletes require electrolytes and fluids. Similarly, Shlomo tells his clients not to consume coffee, as caffeine is a diuretic that dries out the body. For those who can’t go without it, he recommends cutting down on how much is consumed and giving the body a few hours between enjoying the coffee and revving up the vocal cords. Within the world of vocal athletes, the elite superstars are undoubtedly the wedding singers who pour out their heart and soul on stage for hours on end, night after night. For these professionals, the risks are so much more than a matter of discomfort or inconvenience; they can be career-threatening if not tended to. To that end, performers generally work with a vocal coach that helps them train how to sing properly without causing undue stress on the vocal cords. It is also common for them to eschew dairy, fried or spicy foods, among others that cause extra mucus or acid reflux. It would be hard to explain in print all of what vocal training entails, so Shlomo offers a most helpful analogy: When picking up a heavy box, the easy thing to do is to lean forward, put your arms under it and lift, with most of the stress placed on your lower back. However, if someone were to lift boxes this way regularly, they would blow their back out pretty quickly. Instead, they would have to learn to engage their entire body in the process: Feet spread apart, knees bent, abdominal muscles tightened, back straightened, and thighs and hips activated. Similarly, when it comes to singing, using brute force to push air strongly and powerfully through the vocal cords will leave a voice athlete hoarse and compromised in no time. Here, too, it is imperative to engage the entire body in this task. With a straightened back, the chin down to relax the cords, better control of one’s breathing, help from the diaphragm and lung muscles, and other techniques, vocal athletes can get more out of their voices while not straining themselves. Muscle memory applies here as well, and changes don’t always come naturally, requiring
WITHIN THE WORLD OF VOCAL ATHLETES, THE ELITE SUPERSTARS ARE UNDOUBTEDLY THE WEDDING SINGERS WHO POUR OUT THEIR HEART AND SOUL ON STAGE FOR HOURS ON END, NIGHT AFTER NIGHT. These include rebbe’im and teachers, bachurim and avreichim learning in a loud beis midrash all day, and those whose professions require heavy voice usage like singers or phone salesmen. Shlomo has even coined a term for these people: vocal athletes, a most fitting description for those who put these muscles to heavy use in the way an athlete would their arms or legs.

a number of sessions and lots of practice until the changes are ingrained in the singer’s subconscious and behavior. Just as professional athletes dedicate time to strength training in the weight room and don’t take to the field without stretching, singers work their vocal muscles to project stronger sounds and more vocal flexibility. This unglamorous and time-consuming work takes place behind the scenes, and many performers incorporate such practices in their daily routines. When something goes wrong with their vocals, a call to Shlomo often follows as the coaching and teaching makes place for more fundamental vocal health work. During our conversation, the topic of yeshivah bachurim straining their voices came up multiple times. Not only do they speak loudly during seder and heated lunchroom debates, this often happens to coincide with the time that their voices are changing and maturing. Just as adolescents are often gawky and uncoordinated during their growth spurts, their voices, too, are growing up and turning deeper. This isn’t a time for straining these vital muscles. Time should always be set aside for the voice to rest, and sipping water regularly is important. If problems arise or using one’s voice turns painful, one should seek professional help instead of just stubbornly powering through (good luck with that, parents!). For younger boys blessed with singing voices, Shlomo recommends that they avoid performing with power and strength during their growing phase. While regular singing and voice exercises are fine, it is important to accept the voice for what it is without straining or trying to increase its range. In girls, vocal changes are usually more minor and do not require such delicate care. IN THE FINAL KAPITEL of Sefer Tehillim, recited every morning, we list a number of instruments with which we praise Hashem. But to wrap up his timeless oeuvre, Dovid Hamelech concludes with the greatest instrument of all: our breath: Kol haneshamah tehallel Kah, hallelukah.

INSPIRING JEWS ... ONE BOOK AT A TIME
Rabbi Nachman Seltzer presents the “DISCO RABBI” The Incredible Life of Rav Yitzchak Dovid Grossman of Migdal HaEmek
The book everyone is talking about!
• How did a young Meah Shearim Yerushalmi win the hearts of a gang of tough and angry non-religious teens? • How did he “tame” the local crime boss, stop a lynching, and create a Shabbos revolution in an entire city? • How did he become known as the “Disco Rabbi,” beloved by gedolei Yisrael — and secular politicians — and the Israeli public, both religious and non-religious?

A SPEAKING SPIRIT When it comes to the creation of man, the Torah says Hashem “blew into his nostrils the breath of life. And man became a living soul” (Bereishis 2:7). Targum Onkelos translates the words “And man became a living soul” to mean that “man became a speaking spirit.”
A CATEGORY OF HIS OWN It is taught that the world is divided into four categories, with each category containing a unique form of soul: 1. DOMEM: The silent or inanimate creations (i.e., rocks, sand, minerals, etc.) 2. TZOME’ACH: Growing things (vegetation) 3. CHAI: Living beings (the animal world) 4. MEDABER: The speaker (mankind) But are humans truly so unique in their ability to speak, causing them to be in a category of their own? After all, some birds are able to say words and even sentences. Therefore, what is truly the greatness of man over animal? The Vilna Gaon answers this in Sefer Barak HaShachar on Koheles, saying that it is not the physical ability to form words that separates man from animal, but rather the ability to create intellectually inspired speech. It is not simply an enhanced faculty of speech that causes man to be a medaber, but the manner in which he is able to manipulate the words of his mouth. Rabbi Dr. Abraham Twerski, a”h, explains this concept well: The uniqueness of man is not just that he has a more sophisticated form of speech, but that he can elevate his speech to being holy. By using his speech properly, by not speaking foolishly, by avoiding defamatory speech and carrying tales, man can sanctify his speech. This is something that animals cannot do, and it is this ability to sanctify speech that merits the designation “speaker.” One is a “speaker” only if one’s speech is kodesh, only if one sanctifies his speech. We should indeed take pride in having the gift of speech, but unless we sanctify our speech, we are not yet unique... Avoiding the abuse of this precious gift is what makes us unique as humans.

HAKOL KOL YAAKOV While speech separates man from animal, the “kol Yaakov ‘’ creates a separation between the Am Hanivchar and the nochrim. There are multiple levels explaining what the “kol Yaakov” is.
PLEASANTNESS AND RESPECT The pasuk in Bereishis (27:22) says that when Yitzchok felt the goat skin covering Yaakov’s hands (who was dressed as Eisav) and spoke with him, he commented that “the voice is the voice of Yaakov, but the hands are the hands of Eisav.” Rashi implies there that Yitzchok Avinu wasn’t referring to the physical sound of the voice, but the manner of speaking. He says that Yaakov Avinu was accustomed to speaking pleasantly, with derech eretz, whereas Eisav was harsh and uncouth.
THE VOICE IS OUR LOT The Malbim sheds light on a deeper understanding of this pasuk, telling us that the “voice of Yaakov” alludes to the lot of the Yidden being spiritual in nature, for a voice emanates from the soul. The “hands of Eisav,” on the other hand, are confined to the physicalities of this world, utterly lacking in spirituality.
TORAH AND TEFILLAH Pirkei D’Rabbi Eliezer writes that Yaakov Avinu announced that the voice he heard was the voice of Yaakov, which proclaims the Oneness of Hashem and delves into His Torah. The unique voice of Yaakov is the one that is occupied with Holy words, crying out in prayer and engaging in the study of Torah.
WHEN THE VOICE IS WEAKENED The Vilna Gaon notes that in the pasuk, the first “kol” is spelled without a vav, enabling it to be read as “hakal,” meaning “weak.” Chazal relate that when the “voice of Yaakov” becomes weakened — with the learning of Torah and heartfelt tefillah diminished — then that is when the “hands of Eisav” gain power over the Yidden, with the ability to wreak destruction upon Klal Yisroel. The kol Yaakov is our natural defense against forces that seek to drive us under.

Where Is the Daughter I Raised? Uriah Stein - A Story of Unwavering Emunah and Strength. Uriah was a lighthouse: a lighthouse for the balanced response of a Yid to suffering. His faith grew only stronger as his suffering intensified. He was an eved. And much like the eved Ivri, he "toiled for six years, and went free on the seventh.” This is his story. And the crux of it applies to every one of us, as we face the hester panim of our times. By E. M. Friedman
A Medical Drama of Tragedy and Triumph. The poignant, exquisitely written, true account of one woman's experiences through illness and tragedy, and ultimately, by her digging deep within the reserves of her faith, to triumphant self discovery and a renewed and genuine commitment to her Creator. Contains sensitive material; recommended for mature readers only. By Ester Zirkind
