(Re: Let Them Eat Cake, Issue 79) My Polish-born savta was nifteres in 1982, almost 40 years ago, and her final years were spent being cared for in a Montreal nursing home. Yet I can smell her delectable rugelach and sugar cookies to this very day. I couldn’t have been more than ten or eleven when I enjoyed her baked delights, and that was many a year ago. There was no greater treat for my cousins and myself than her sugar-sprinkled cookies that she would cut out using the rim of glass or her cinnamon/raisinflavored, perfectly rolled rugelach. My savta, a Holocaust survivor, had no need for a mixer, recipe book, fancy gadgetry or even a cookie cutter. Every bite was infused with love for her precious einiklach, and to this very day, I have yet to taste anything as tantalizing as her homemade delicacies. R.S.

WHAT WORKS FOR ME (Re: The Incredible but Inedible Egg, Issue 79) I’m reaching out to your readers to share a simple egg substitution that works with most recipes. For delicious cookies, cakes, challahs and more, I just add additional water. For every extra-large egg a recipe calls for, I use a quarter cup of water, and everything comes out wonderfully moist. This works for most recipes. It is only when I’m

YOU CAN WRITE TO THEM (Re: Envelope of Hope, Issue 76) I read your article before Pesach about inmates, and then the ensuing letters from those seeking contact information for Jewish prisoners. I wanted to reach out to share that I do know a couple of inmates in the New York State prison system. If anyone is interested in writing letters weekly or even occasionally, you can provide them with my contact information. Y.C. The letter-writer can be contacted through The Boro Park View.
A TASTY ALTERNATIVE I would like to share a very good idea my father has discovered that can benefit others with acid reflux and/ or sensitivity to tomatoes. On his new diet, it was very hard for him to be deprived of tomatoes, and he missed tomato dip especially. However, he recently found out that yellow tomatoes don’t have acid, and he could tolerate it well. Now, each Erev Shabbos, it is my job to make two tomato dips: one regular version and one using yellow tomatoes. And I am so glad my father can once again partake of this oneg Shabbos! Dear Neighbor, I’m glad we’re able to sit out together again after this long winter. However, it seems like you are not aware that viruses are contagious. Now with RSV going around, the right thing to do is to stay away from crowds with young kids and babies if one of your children is running a fever, sneezing and/or coughing. They should not be playing with other kids when they are sick. I’m sure it’s only the awareness you are lacking. Thank you, Your Neighbor

CHAPTER 4 RECAP: Shabbesai Tzvi reveals to Gamliel that Moshiach is destined to arrive in 1666, and that the anointed is none other than he. Yechiel’s existence takes on a surreal aura as the fast in isolation progresses.
T
he next two days passed quickly for Yechiel Tomashov. The time was filled to bursting with intensive prayer and learning, and he did not even notice the lack of food and drink. In the evenings, he washed his hands and ate some plain bread, relishing the blessing far more than the bread itself. Gamliel came by several times but did not remain for long. On the morning of the fourth day, Yechiel rose early. He put on his tefillin before daybreak and prayed with the rising sun. Although no longer required to fast, he did not bother to eat anything before rushing off to immerse himself in the cold waters of the sea. When he returned, the Jewish quarter had awakened, and he headed directly for his meeting with Shabbesai Tzvi. He turned the last corner into the street where Shabbesai Tzvi lived. “Yechiel! Yechiel!” Yechiel spun around. Elazar Ashkenazi, the elderly banker for whom he worked, was hobbling along behind him, tapping a heavy cane on the ground and shouting his name. Yechiel stood frozen in place.
62 / THE BORO PARK VIEW
Shabbesai Tzvi had specifically instructed him not to speak with anyone after he had immersed himself in the sea, not even a nod of the head, but did this include his kind employer as well? It probably did. Absolutely no one, Shabbesai Tzvi had said. What should he do? Should he respond in violation of Shabbesai Tzvi’s instructions or should he rush off before the elderly banker caught up with him? As he grappled with his dilemma, the old man reached his side and touched him on the arm. “Yechiel, my boy, where have you been? Your landlord said you left very early this morning.” Yechiel looked at the old man impassively and remained silent. “What’s the matter with you, my boy? Why won’t you answer me?” Still no response. “Why won’t you answer me?” the old man asked with growing irritation. “Don’t you think you owe me an explanation? For three days you don’t appear at the office. We all did our best to compensate for your absence, assuming you were ill. You look perfectly fine, however. Were you ill?” Yechiel remained silent.
“What’s the meaning of this rude silence?” snapped the old man, his face red with anger. “Have I ever offended you or been anything other than kind to you? How dare you treat me this way?” The truth of the old man’s words tore through the cocoon of silence in which Yechiel had wrapped himself. He was on the verge of blurting out an apology, but at the last moment, he stopped himself. Perhaps this was part of the test. For three days, he had secluded and purified himself, and now he was on his way to being received by Shabbesai Tzvi, the holiest man he had ever seen. He was so close to entering a higher, better world, so very, very close. Just minutes away. He could not risk the slightest violation of Shabbesai Tzvi’s instructions. There was no choice. He would mollify his employer afterward. But now he had to remain silent. He could afford not even a nod of his head. Not even a change of expression on his face. “Has it anything to do with that red-bearded collector from Yerushalayim, that Gamliel Basnoun?” asked the old man, his shrewd eyes intent on Yechiel’s face. The sudden flicker in Yechiel’s eyes spoke more than words. “Aha! I knew it! Your landlord told me Basnoun has visited you several times these past three days. He hasn’t drawn you in with that deranged Shabbesai Tzvi, has he? The
one who imagines he is Moshiach? Wait! Doesn’t the Tzvi family live on this very street? You’re going to him right now, aren’t you?” Yechiel turned to leave, but the old man grabbed his arm. “You listen to me, Yechiel. I’ve known Mordechai Tzvi ever since he came here from Greece and young Shabbesai since the day of his birth. I remember when Rav Yosef Escapa accepted Shabbesai as a disciple after his bar mitzvah and started teaching him the Kabbalah. I also remember when, just a few short years later, Shabbesai left the yeshivah and went off to study in solitude, against the wishes of his rabbi, drawing the young men of Smyrna to himself with his strange and mysterious ways. Like this ridiculous silence he has imposed upon you.” Yechiel remained immobile as a statue. “Believe me, Yechiel, these are not the signs of Moshiach. Just because he was born on Tisha B’Av does not mean he is Moshiach. Just because he’s descended from the House of David does not mean he is Moshiach. There are hundreds of other people born on Tisha B’Av and descended from the House of David.” He stopped to catch his breath. “I tell you,” he said, his voice rising, “the Kabbalah has inflamed his mind and his delusions have unhinged it. When Moshiach comes, our respected old rabbis will not frown upon him but welcome him. Moshiach will be full of light and serenity, not a troubled soul always shifting between black moods and ecstatic frenzies.” He paused and looked about him. Some of the passersby had paused to watch them curiously from a distance. The stony expression on Yechiel’s face did not change, and the old man continued in a lowered voice. “I understand your yearning, my son. I, too, long for the coming of Moshiach along with the rest of our People. Perhaps he’ll come in our time. Perhaps he has already arrived. But I can tell you one thing for certain. You’re searching on the wrong street, my poor misguided child. You’re searching on the wrong street.” The old man turned and hurried away, the tap-tap of his cane lingering in the air long after he’d gone. Yechiel sighed softly as he walked to the house directly across the street and knocked on the door. Shabbesai Tzvi himself opened the door immediately and ushered him into a small room at the front of the house. The room was empty, except for a table and chairs and the musty scent of old seforim and melted candle wax. Shabbesai Tzvi went to stand by the window, his hands clasped behind his back as he watched the people in the street. Yechiel fidgeted uncomfortably but did not utter a single word. After what seemed like an interminable time, Shabbesai Tzvi turned to Yechiel and affixed him with glittering eyes. “I heard every word the old man said to you,” he said. “Do not be concerned about him. I know him well. Speak kindly to him tomorrow, and I assure you he will cause you no trouble. He will not meddle in your affairs. You did well to keep your silence. It does no good to argue with these people. They mean well, but they’re set in their ways. Fifteen hundred years of exile and persecution lie heavily on their minds and hearts. The old may have more wisdom, but the young have more courage. Do you understand?” Yechiel swallowed nervously and nodded. “Speak up, my child,” said Shabbesai Tzvi, his words punctuated by a short humorless laugh. “You can speak to me. Your period of silence

is over. Speak up!” “Yes, I understand,” Yechiel managed to croak. Shabbesai Tzvi turned away from Yechiel and once again looked out the window. “Their ideas about Moshiach are childish and naive,” he said in a low, brooding voice. “They think everything will be sweetness and light. That the dark spirits that permeate the nether realms of the universe will not attempt to stand in his way. That people will immediately understand his message and welcome him with open arms. They think it will be so easy for them to throw off the heavy yoke of centuries upon centuries of exile. It is foolishness and wishful thinking.” He turned back to cast a sidelong glance at Yechiel. The effects of his words and the sheer force of his personality were evident on the younger man’s face. The bewilderment and chagrin brought on by the unfortunate meeting with the old man had been wiped clean. Shabbesai Tzvi continued. “Moshiach will have to struggle long and hard to bring this bitter exile to its final end. He’ll be persecuted and maligned, chased from city to city and country to country. And it will take many years. But once his movement begins to gather momentum, it will grow stronger and stronger like the rushing tide, sweeping everything before it. Nothing will stop it or stand in its way. Nothing!” For a long time, Shabbesai Tzvi stood looking out of the window in silence. Finally, he turned to Yechiel. “Do you await the coming of Moshiach with eagerness?” he asked. “I await his arrival every day.” “So do I, my child. So do I.” Yechiel was slightly puzzled by this last remark, which seemed to imply that Shabbesai Tzvi and Moshiach were not necessarily one and the same person, but he dared not voice his question. “I want to hear about Poland,” said Shabbesai Tzvi. “Tell me about the suffering of my people.” Great pearly tears ran down Shabbesai Tzvi’s cheeks as he listened to Yechiel’s accounts of the Cossack atrocities against the Jews of Poland. When the heartrending account finally came to an end, he withdrew a small vial and a tiny spoon from the inner folds of his robes. He scooped his tears into a spoon and dripped them into the vial. “The agony of my soul lies in this vial,” he said in a broken voice. “It is my most precious treasure.” He closed the vial tightly and set it aside. Yechiel was moved to the very depths of his soul. He felt humbled by the overwhelming greatness of this holy man and ashamed for allowing the aged banker to awaken unworthy feelings in his heart. It would never happen again. Shabbesai Tzvi smiled and nodded approvingly, almost as if he’d read Yechiel’s mind. Yechiel looked away in embarrassment. “In the beginning, when the Almighty created the world,” said Shabbesai Tzvi in a faraway voice, “sparks of Divine light were scattered throughout the universe. According to the Kabbalah, many of these nitzotzos, these sparks of holiness, were captured by the forces of evil, the kelipos. It is the task of the Jewish people to retrieve these sparks of holiness, to restore the shattered elements and bring about an olam hatikkun, a world of restoration. Only when we’ve retrieved all the sparks of holiness will this bitter exile finally come to an end. Do you understand?” “Only a little, but I’m willing to learn.” “An honest answer, and a good one. You may join us the next time we meet. I’m sure you will learn quickly.” A look of pure joy spread across Yechiel’s face. “Thank you, Master,” he breathed. Shabbesai Tzvi smiled with pleasure. He embraced Yechiel and kissed the top of his head. “Go in peace, my precious child. May the Almighty watch over you always and protect you.” To be continued…

Nearly 1M Calls in 90 Minutes as FEMA Opens COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Hotline In a grim reminder of the pandemic’s horrific death toll, the Federal Emergency Management Agency found itself slammed with calls as it opened up the applications process for a program that will reimburse as much as $9,000 in COVID-19-related funeral costs. FEMA opened up the program on Monday, April 12, at 9 a.m., and CNN reported that nearly a million calls were received within its first 90 minutes of operation. The sheer volume of incoming calls sparked technical issues, and most callers reached busy signals, not hotline operators. Within 48 hours the problems were mostly resolved, and FEMA acting administrator Robert Fenton said that 58,000 people had successfully registered for the program, with 1,700 already submitting the required documentation for reimbursement. Fenton said that FEMA was hoping to start sending out payments this week to those who had successfully completed their applications. VIN News reported that the program is open to those who buried a loved one after January 20, 2020, whose death is attributed to COVID-19. Applicants must submit documentation showing actual funeral expenses incurred and proving that the death was attributed, or likely caused, by COVID-19, and took place in the United States or its territories. The program is open to U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals or qualified aliens and only applies to funeral expenses that were not covered by any agencies, programs, donations or other sources. Those who lost multiple loved ones to COVID-19 may be eligible for as much as $35,000 in funeral reimbursements. Given the sensitivity of the program, FEMA is accepting

registrations by phone only at 844-684-6333. Fenton has said that the 5,000 operators working the phone lines have been authorized to spend as much time as necessary with each applicant, with a focus on being empathetic and compassionate. There is no deadline to apply for the program at this time, and phone lines are open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. EST. “The fact that the government has recognized that there are people who really, really did not have the money to spend for a loved one’s funeral is something that should be recognized and praised,” said Senator Simcha Felder. “There is no question that this is a good thing and will be a big help to those who have lost loved ones.” Approximately $2 billion of a $900 billion relief package approved by Congress was allocated for burial costs, while $50 billion of a $1.9 trillion package greenlighted last month was also set aside for COVID-19-related costs.
Successful Vaccination Program Has Elderly Hospitalization Rates Dropping by More Than Half, Says City The move to prioritize senior citizens and nursing home residents has paid off big, according to city officials. Speaking to reporters on April 14, New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi said that the average admission rate for those 65 and older with COVID-19-like symptoms has fallen by more than 51% since the middle of January, 22 percentage points more than the numbers being seen in those under 65. With 99% of city dwellers now living within a mile of a vaccination site, Chokshi called on all city residents to continue masking up, practicing social distancing and getting themselves vaccinated. “What’s been proven now very, very clearly is the power of this vaccine to protect our seniors, to protect everyone, but particularly those who are most vulnerable, and we are seeing really powerful evidence in terms of reduction of hospitalizations,” noted New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. As of last weekend, all New Yorkers ages 50 and up can be vaccinated without an appointment at eligible sites, which include Coney Island YMCA, Teachers Prep High School, Starrett City, Flatbush YMCA, Bushwick Educational Campus, Event Space at City Point and the Brooklyn Army Terminal in Kings County. “Our priority for the next few months is

clear,” said the mayor. “We need to vaccinate as many New Yorkers as possible. By making it easier for New Yorkers fifty and older to get vaccinated, we are on our way to fully vaccinating five million New Yorkers by June.”
$4M in Federal Aid for Boro Park Community Health Center It was good news for community health centers as Senator Charles Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand successfully secured nearly $397 million in emergency federal funding for 63 sites statewide, including one serving the Jewish community in Boro Park. Ezra Medical Center, which has locations on 38th and 60th streets off 13th Avenue, will be receiving $4,056,625 in funding. Part of the American Rescue Plan, the emergency aid will be used to provide preventive and primary health care to those at higher risk for the coronavirus, including testing and vaccinations, and expand operational capacity during the pandemic and beyond, according to a statement released by Gillibrand. “In the midst of this global pandemic, people across New York are turning to community health centers for affordable primary and preventative health care,” said Gillibrand. “CHCs provide a wide range of services to some of our most underserved populations, and this funding will help address the pandemic challenge and the health disparities it has exacerbated within our communities and ensure these centers can continue providing quality care to every New York community. Due to strained financial resources, hundreds of these vital centers have been faced with closure when health care services are needed more than ever.” Also benefiting from the funding in the Hudson Valley are Refuah Health Center, with offices on Twin Avenue and on Main Street in Spring Valley and an upstate branch in Fallsburg, which was awarded $11,808,625, and Ezras Choilim Health Center in Monroe, which will be receiving $3,985,125.

The past year has been difficult for many, and Boro Park Hatzolah is no exception, having suffered the loss of three longtime members over the past six weeks. Three new ambulances will be dedicated in their memory, giving Hatzolah the ability to respond even faster to calls as they come in. According to Boro Park 24, ambulances have been dedicated in memory of Hatzolah coordinator Reb Aaron Yochanan Fleishman (B34), z”l, Reb Anshel Lax (B36), z”l, and Reb Moshe Duvid Kish (B219), z”l, their names to be emblazoned on the front of the blue-and-white vehicles. Additional dedications are also being made in memory of Hatzolah medical board member Reb Moshe Leib Stamm (B45), z”l, who passed away during the early weeks of COVID-19 and Reb Shloime Adler (B24), z”l, who was niftar in July.

Felder and Eichenstein Describe Hard-Won Accomplishments in Latest State Budget Having spent months advocating for their constituents, Senator Simcha Felder and Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein released a joint statement last week sharing the highlights of their efforts as included in the newly passed $212 billion state budget. Their achievements include getting reimbursements approved for private school busing costs incurred during the pandemic when public schools were closed; in addition, free private school busing expanded to include Staten Island residents who send their children to nonpublic schools in Brooklyn. Tuition Assistance Program grants are being increased by $500 to $5,665, and $40 million in safety and security grants for nonpublic schools and nonprofits have also been approved. Billions in grants and tax credits are also being allocated for small businesses, rent relief for tenants and landlords, and child care funding. Also approved were middle-class tax cuts, $85 million toward food banks and food distribution programs, and $450 for additional funding for the state’s Home Energy Assistance Program to help low-income residents heat their homes. Medicaid postpartum coverage has also been extended from 60 days to one year. In their joint statement, Felder and Eichenstein said that they will continue to keep the public informed of additional details regarding these new money-saving initiatives.
100+ Tips Regarding Potential Cuomo Misbehavior Currently Under Investigation The New York State Assembly Judiciary Committee is promising to move quickly and fairly as it investigates dozens of tips from the public about alleged issues regarding Governor Andrew Cuomo. USA Today reported that the Judiciary Committee invited the public to submit tips via email or phone on April 1, with more than 100 reported so far. Committee head Charles Lavine said that it could take months to complete the investigation as potential witnesses are interviewed and documentation is analyzed. Cuomo has found himself in the spotlight in recent weeks amid allegations of intentional cover-ups on COVID-19 nursing home death data, construction woes on the new Tappan Zee Bridge that bears his father’s name, improper behavior, and questionable arrangements regarding the book he published last October touting his leadership skills amid the pandemic. Even with a second investigation into the governor being conducted by State Attorney General Letitia James, Cuomo continues to ignore calls from both Democrats and Republicans for his resignation.

CHAPTER FOUR
RECAP: Ariella
begins her investigation into where Osher could be. Rabbi Reiness turns down yet another potential buyer for his home, telling him that he’s not interested in selling.
“W
hat are you looking for here, Rebbi?” The question was surprising, but not unexpected. It wasn’t the first time that it had been asked of Elazar Reiness, in any number of ways and words. The strange thing was the timing. “Why? Are you not enjoying it here, Osher?” “Me? I am enjoying being here very much.” Osher hugged the rusty cannon he was perched upon. The cool evening air whipped around him roughly. From their spot at the top of the wall, they could see the sea spread out before them on one side, and the entire city — new and old — on the other side. “Acco is a nice city,” the boy conceded. “Really nice. Calming. But why did you choose to live here?” The bearded man chuckled. “I enjoy the city just as much as you do, first of all. Besides that? I’m a carpenter, as you know. It’s what I do, and this is where my shop is.” “The carpenter rabbi,” Osher murmured. “But there are many places where you could do your work, you know. And while I agree that there’s holiness in this city — I mean, you have the Ramchal shul and Ohr Torah and all that — there are also so many Arabs living in Acco, and mosques and churches. So, what are you looking for here?” “You.” Reiness laughed and straightened his yarmulke, which was about to fall off his head.

“Lots of people are looking for me, but they haven’t been able to find me,” the youth said tonelessly. “Why do you think you’ll be able to do it?” “I’ve had a knack for finding things ever since I was a little kid.” Rabbi Reiness’s blue eyes twinkled at him. “My mother, alehah hashalom, would send me to look for anything that got lost. But let’s not talk about that now; you’ll get bored. Call the others, and ask them what they think of a light supper. My rebbetzin prepared some delicious food for us, if my sense of smell is not deceiving me.” The boy slipped off the ancient cannon — or was it faux ancient? Rabbi Reiness was not sure of its true age — and walked farther along on the wall to where the others were standing and chatting. “Supper,” he said tersely. “Come on.” When they were all sitting on benches on the deserted promenade a few hundred meters down from the cannon spot, Osher raised the subject again, insistently. “This is not your real house, Rabbi Reiness, right?” “It sure is.”
“Lots of people are looking for me, but they haven’t been able to find me.”

“Where did you live before this?” “In Haifa.” “So why did you come to Acco if you never had any connection to the city before?” “I actually did have a connection.” Reb Elazar smiled, his famous grin spreading across his face. “I lived in this city when I was a child. Until I was six.” “In the house where you live now?” “Osher, do you want a cucumber?” Dovid interrupted. “Here’s a huge one. It’s so big, it will keep you busy and quiet for a long time.” “Dovid,” Reb Elazar said quietly. “I’m sorry, Rebbi, I just don’t have the patience for nudges. He’s still a guest, and with all due respect to him, if he has a list of questions, he shouldn’t go through it while he’s sitting next to me.” Osher sat swinging his legs, gazing at the water that was growing blacker by the minute. He didn’t seem offended — perhaps because he hadn’t even heard Dovid’s barbs. After a few minutes of “pass the hummus, please” and “who wants apple juice?” Rabbi Reiness cleared his throat. “Now,” he said,“if everyone is full, perhaps the time has come to satiate our souls a bit, as well?” He looked at his students. To Osher, the sentence sounded a bit too elegant, almost like the rabbi was reading it from a book, but none of the carpentry apprentices snickered at it. They just listened to Rabbi Reiness in silence. Osher stood up and walked near the benches. He felt the others’ piercing eyes on him, but he ignored them.

Reb Elazar spoke nicely, really nicely. If Tatty, Mommy and Ariella would hear him, they would be happy. But he wasn’t sure that the thought of him living in Acco would please them at all. Then again, it was definitely better than lots of other places… Just to be sure, he had decided not to tell them anything for now. He
“The first to do what?” He closed his pad. “To crash into me.” “You mean, you’ve been knocked down before?” “You could say so.” I smiled in a friendly way. “But it’s fine. You can’t see anything from the outside, so it doesn’t bother anyone.” He straightened his black hat (not the shabby-looking one, the nice Shabbos one. Later he told me that he’d come to Bnei Brak for a wedding of a former student) and looked at me. “It actually sounds very disturbing,” he noted, and raised his eyebrows. “To be knocked over by someone. Did it hurt?” “At first.” “And then?” “Then you get used to it.” I don’t know why I started talking to him that way. Maybe because he started talking that way to me. He asked me for my name, and then where I live, and only then, too late, did I realize that I didn’t know this guy at all, and that I’d been taught from age zero not to speak to strangers. Okay, so I’m no longer a little boy, but still. “Whatever; it doesn’t matter,” I said. “Anyway, I need to get back to yeshivah. The shiur starts soon.” “Which yeshivah are you in?” “Right now? Or the day after tomorrow?” “Is there a difference?” “Right now I’m in yeshivah, and the name of the place doesn’t matter, just like my name doesn’t matter. But the day after tomorrow, I might not have patience for yeshivah anymore.” He sat down on the bench and put his hat on his knees. “You don’t look
Now he was staying just to gauge if it was worth it for him to stay on for other reasons. Reb Elazar had charmed him from the first moment. wasn’t even sure he’d be staying here for the long term. He wasn’t born to be a carpenter, as he had come to realize in the short time since he’d arrived. Now he was staying just to gauge if it was worth it for him to stay on for other reasons. Reb Elazar had charmed him from the first moment. That encounter had also been on a bench, although the scenery had been much less special than it was here…
Osher: To this day, Rabbi Reiness and I can’t decide who found whom. Perhaps we both found each other. I was standing near the bench dreamily, lost in my own thoughts, and he was standing across from me, looking into his little green notepad. It was only at the last second that we avoided a serious collision. “Hey!” I said to him, just as he suddenly raised his eyes. “Oh!” he replied. “Sorry, sorry, I’m so sorry. I almost crashed into you!” “It’s all right,” I said. “You wouldn’t have been the first.”

like someone who is going to leave yeshivah.” I laughed. “You think so? This is my third yeshivah already.” “You look very sheltered.” Yes, that’s the word he chose. “Sure. That’s because of my parents, who raised me well. They’re not to blame that their son can’t sit still for ten minutes. But I’m also not to blame, and neither are the maggidei shiur. It’s no one’s fault.” He looked at me, and I returned his gaze. There was real concern in his eyes. I felt that I had to reassure him quickly. “It will be fine, b’ezras Hashem. I mean, I hope it will be fine.” He continued looking at me with that same expression, that look of his, and I felt tears almost coming. “It’s really fine!” I repeated, and stood up. “You can relax. You didn’t knock me down, and I’ll manage with all the rest of it.” “But why do they knock you down?” he asked. “My friends? Oh, they don’t mean it. If you’d know me better, you’d see that I’m the irritating type, the type who doesn’t know what to say or when to say it. You know, there are those types who just know how to do the right thing, at the right time, and in the right place. I have a sister like that. But I’m the exact opposite. I also don’t get along with my friends, don’t do well in learning, and I don’t succeed at anything that I try to do. No one has it easy with me. That’s it.” I turned around. I couldn’t stand the way he was looking at me. “Look, bachur’l.” He put a hand on my shoulder and spoke rapidly. “If you don’t want to give me details about yourself, that’s fine. But can I give you my contact information? Just so you have it? And if you ever feel like it — please call me. Maybe I can help you.” He opened his green notepad, pulled

And there was a phone number. “How can you help me?” I asked, trying to sound blasé, as if to say, I don’t really believe that you have a way to help me, but if you really want me to ask, then I’m asking. “I have a carpentry shop,” he said. “And I have great guys who work for me there, from good homes. Like you.” He smiled. “The type of boys who struggled in yeshivos, for all kinds of reasons. It doesn’t matter how they got to me, but they ended up there.” He stuck his green notepad into his jacket pocket. “Baruch Hashem, I think they are happy with us.” “A carpentry shop?” I was skeptical. “I have two left hands.” “There’s a carpentry shop there, sure. Anyone who wants to work there is welcome to do so. But anyone who doesn’t want to, doesn’t have to.” “And what does such a person do? Walk around all

day and all night without doing anything? I don’t like that. And my father always says that idleness is the mother of all sins.” “That’s very true. Still, I don’t think you would be bored with us.” He was still smiling. “You know what? Try it out. What do you have to lose? Worst comes to worst, if you don’t like it, you can always leave.” “But I don’t even know you,” I said, feeling like a twoyear-old. He’s right, the two-year-old, isn’t he? You don’t just pick yourself up and go somewhere with strangers. “So here you go. You’ve got my name, and you can find out about me from whomever you want.” “Where can I find out about you?” “You can ask people in Haifa,” he replied. “And in Acco.” “Acco?” I broke the word down into two syllables. “You live there? Aren’t there only Arabs there?” “No, there are also lots of good Jews in Acco. And that’s where my carpentry shop is.” I was quiet. So was he. I fingered the little piece of paper and wondered if it was really worth going to his shop. Acco sounded far enough away from all those who knew me and knew how worthless I am. “We’ll see…” I said quietly. “You’ll come, won’t you?” He offered me his hand. “I sense that you’ll come.” All I agreed to murmur back was another, “We’ll see.” And I didn’t shake his hand, either. But he was right. In the end, I came. To be continued…

FRIED STEAK FINGERS
Melt-in-your-mouth tender steak and crispy potatoes. Need I say more?
I know, I know, the name of this recipe sounds like an oxymoron. Who fries steak, right? Well, give this recipe a go, and you’ll see for yourself what the rave is all about.
INGREDIENTS 4 pieces of minute steak Oil or nonstick spray
INGREDIENTS
5–6 red potatoes, cut to ¼-inch-thick slices
1½ lbs. finger steak (or top of the rib, cut into strips)
2 T. olive oil
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tsp. garlic powder, divided
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 tsp. oregano, divided
1 tsp. onion powder
Salt and black pepper, to taste
¼ tsp. paprika
1 tsp. paprika
½ tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)
1 tsp. cayenne pepper
Kosher salt
1 tsp. Montreal steak spice
Black pepper
1 tsp. red pepper flakes
¾ cup almond milk
DIRECTIONS
2 large eggs
1. Preheat the oven to 375°. Lightly oil a baking sheet, or coat it with nonstick spray. 2. Place the sliced potatoes on one side of the prepared baking sheet. Add the olive oil, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon oregano, and a sprinkling of salt and pepper. Toss this together gently to combine. Then bake for 20 to 25 minutes, tossing occasionally, until the potatoes are golden-brown and crisp. 3. Meanwhile, prepare the spice mix by combining ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon black pepper, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon oregano, as well as the paprika, cayenne pepper, steak spice and red pepper flakes in a small bowl. Season the steaks by rubbing this spice mix on both sides. 4. When the potatoes are ready, remove them from the oven and switch it to broil mode. Place the seasoned steaks on the other side of the prepared baking sheet. 5. Place the baking sheet back in the oven and broil until the steaks are browned and charred at the edges, about 4 to 5 minutes per side for mediumrare, or until they reach desired doneness. For thinner cuts of steak, simply broil on one side only.
Oil, for frying DIRECTIONS 1. In a shallow bowl, whisk together the flour and spices, including salt and pepper to taste. In another shallow bowl, whisk together the almond milk and eggs. 2. Season the steak strips generously with salt and pepper. Working in batches, dredge the steak thoroughly in the flour mixture to coat, then dip it in the egg mixture. Return the steak to the flour mixture and dredge it once more. 3. In a large, deep frying pan over medium heat, heat ½ inch of oil until it’s shimmering. Using tongs, add the steak strips, one by one, and cook them in batches until they’re completely golden, about 2 minutes per side. Drain the steak on a paper towel– lined plate. 4. Serve with fries. Dip steak fingers in store-bought lemon-garlic dressing or warm chili sauce.

BROCCOLI, NOODLES AND STEAK
LEARN IT. MASTER IT. RISE ABOVE.
This recipe is one of my favorite go-to steak dinners because it’s so easy to make, so ridiculously delicious, and it’s a one- (okay, two-) pot dinner.
INGREDIENTS 1.5–2 lb. pepper steak 12 oz. wide noodles ⅓ cup soy sauce 3 frozen garlic cubes 1 T. lemon juice 1 T. Sriracha sauce 1 tsp. honey 3 T. oil, divided 1 T. cornstarch 18 oz. (¾ pkg.) frozen broccoli florets, chopped 1 box mushrooms, sliced DIRECTIONS 1. In a large pot of salted boiling water, cook the noodles according to package directions. Drain the noodles, then rinse with cold water. 2. In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, garlic, lemon juice, Sriracha, honey, and 2 tablespoons of oil, then whisk in the cornstarch until you have a smooth mixture. 3. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, heat the remaining tablespoon of oil. Add the steak, and sear for 3 to 5 minutes on each side. 4. Stir in the broccoli, mushrooms and 2 tablespoons of water. Cook until tender, about 6 minutes. Add the sauce and simmer for 3 minutes, then reduce the heat to low and add the cooked noodles. Toss all the ingredients together until they’re evenly coated and warmed through.

There’s a cacophony of clicking heels and rolling wheels, peppered with intermittent broadcasts. People of every nationality rush along on the polished concourse of the terminal, stopping at check-in counters, security lines, concession shops and gate lounges. Welcome to the airport, one of the busiest and fastestpaced settings in the world! From the moment you walk through the rotating doors into the high-ceilinged terminal building, you’re already one step off the ground.
The airport is an international symbol, connecting you to the rest of the world. On the East Coast, our aviation opportunities take wing in the JFK-Newark-La Guardia trio. These three airports combine to form the largest airport system in the United States. Together, they account for the largest global network of total flight operations, and the secondlargest in the world in passenger traffic (surpassed only by London!). Hop aboard for a closer look at what makes each one take flight. And we’ll also take a peek at some smaller local airfields for good measure.

John F. Kennedy Airport “THE AIRPORT THAT NEVER SLEEPS” Headed for Europe, Eretz Yisroel or the domestic United States? JFK probably has the most options for you. Conveniently located In close proximity to New York City and not too far from Rockland County, New York’s largest airport is the biggest and busiest starting point. Situated in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, this airport was originally named “New York International Airport” when it opened its doors in 1948. This official title never took off, with people fondly referring to it simply as “Idlewild Airport” for the golf course strip it replaced. In December of 1963, just over one month after President Kennedy’s assassination, the airport was renamed in his honor. Now, that name stuck, and most people colloquially call it “JFK.” From this hub, more than 60 million passengers travel to and from destinations in the United States and across the globe. It is the busiest airport in the NYC Metropolitan area and is

operated by Port Authority, which leases the airport from the city of New York. Each of its six terminals are differently designed. Terminal 5 is the newest, having opened in 2008. Terminal 4 is the only privately operated terminal in the United States and was redeveloped in 2013. T4 tip: When traveling with kids, look for the “Mothers’ Room in the retail lounge.” There is no Terminal 3 or 6. You can get from one terminal to the next using the driverless AirTrain light-rail link. (AirTrain makes a great outing for airport-lovers, even if no flight is scheduled!) The train also connects to the parking lots, rental car areas and public transportation.

The TWA Hotel If you’ve seen it or been in it, you probably remember it. It’s the old TWA terminal building, and its bird-shaped figure is memorable and distinct. After the airline went bankrupt, this iconic structure sat forlorn, unvisited. As one architecture critic commented, “TWA sits aloof amid the architectural hodgepodge of JFK’s Terminal City, like a bird that has lost its flock.” But that recently changed, with the opening of the signature TWA hotel on

May 15, 2019. The terminal, deemed a NYC landmark in 1994, represented the culture and pride of the 1960s. “A most dynamically modeled space of its era,” the 1962-erected building was cherished, but remained abandoned for nearly twenty years before being remodeled as a hotel. The restoration project aimed at capturing the original aura and design. Visitors feel as if they are going back to the 1960s, surrounded by rotary phones and public restrooms that look just the way they used to, down to the paper-towel dispensers. The hotel beckons with smartly designed restaurants, conference rooms and 512 hotel rooms that can be booked for the night or for a few hours for a quick shower or nap.
ARK: A Terminal for Animals Did you think only we humans need to fly? It seems animals share our needs sometimes. Or so private owner John J. Cuticelli thought when he developed the world’s only terminal for animals. Appropriately named for Noach’s teivah, the ARK terminal services dogs, cats, horses, birds and more. It is located off the runway in Cargo Area D, and inside, there is a Pet Oasis providing spa and vet services, a rest area, and a quarantine space for animals. (Even pre-corona, race horses — the primary targeted “clients” — require quarantine for at least three days to avoid spreading disease.) The facility expected to welcome some six thousand animals during the first year, but only about 40 ended up arriving through its doors. How’s that for a $65 million state-of-the-art flop? Remarkably, the ARK terminal is still afloat.
La Guardia “THIRD WORLD COUNTRY” If your flight is taking off from La Guardia, you can’t be traveling too far… The longest distance for La Guardiabound aircraft is capped at 1,500 miles. That rules out most international and even cross-continent flights. Popular routes are Florida, Chicago and Atlanta. You can also fly to

Canada and Central America from here. Short-haul-only doesn’t make the airport slumber... La Guardia bears the distinction of being the busiest U.S. airport without service to Europe. Built in 1929 on land that originally hosted the Gala Amusement Park, La Guardia started out as a private flying field known as the Glenn H. Curtiss Airport. The city of New York purchased it in 1935, renaming it North Beach Airport, and it opened for commercial traffic in 1939. The airport received its new name honoring Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, who was the popular mayor of New York City at the time when the airport was being developed (see below). La Guardia is located in the northern part of the NYC Borough of Queens and is nearest to Manhattan. Its proximity to the water is no coincidence; early flights actually landed on the sea and were towed in by boat. Its Marine Air Terminal is listed in the NYC landmark preservation report. Plans to update and renovate La Guardia’s relatively primitive facilities have faced many bumps and setbacks. And while the airport is undergoing a massive overhaul, it also earned political prestige when then-Vice President Joe Biden mocked La Guardia. He infamously said, “If I blindfolded you and took you to La Guardia Airport in New York, you must

New York. To his dismay, the plane landed in Newark, New Jersey. The mayor stubbornly refused to disembark, arguing that his ticket stated “New York.” Ultimately, the airline had no choice but to fly him farther, landing at an airfield in Brooklyn. This prompted the mayor to push for the construction of a newer and better airport in NYC. And the airport he advocated for sports his name to this very day.
Miracle on the Hudson Few airline mishaps go down in history like the U.S. Airways Flight 1549 emergency landing on January 15, 2009. It was shortly after takeoff from La Guardia airport when the Airbus A320, headed for Charlotte, North Carolina, hit a flock of geese. Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger became an instant hero for deftly maneuvering the aircraft until he managed a safe emergency landing on the Hudson River. Everyone survived, and most of the passengers’ belongings were eventually returned to them. Nearly all the crew members aboard returned to flying shortly after. Newark Expect a less chaotic experience when departing from Newark, they say. That’s despite the fact that the arrivals and departures screens show some 1,200 flights each day, covering both domestic and international destinations. The most popular domestic routes include Florida and California; Paris, London and Tel Aviv make up the busiest international routes. The oldest kid on the block, Newark was the first major airport in the metropolitan area. It opened in October of 1928 and quickly became the world’s busiest commercial airport, a title it has since relinquished. During World War II, all standard passenger traffic was halted when Newark Airport was designated for U.S. Army use. Commercial travel resumed in February of 1946. The monorail system was unveiled in 1996, linking the airport’s three terminals. It was renamed AirTrain Newark in 2001. Heavy renovations are underway at Terminal A; they are slated for completion in 2022. Terminal C, completely dedicated to United Airlines, has been designated the “best terminal in the New York area.” During peak hours — between 4 and 9 p.m. — all of its 52 gates can be in use, causing larger aircraft to need to wait for a gate. Of course, this prompts delays…
More Liberty Newark Airport played a role in the September 11 drama. United Flight 93 took off from Newark, headed for San Francisco. The alQaeda terrorists who hijacked the plane intended to divert it to Washington, D.C., but quick-witted passengers tried to regain control of the aircraft. It ultimately crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. In 2002, Newark International Airport was renamed — with the word “Liberty” added in commemoration of the 9/11 victims.
The Funny Code 116 / THE BORO PARK VIEW / April 21, 2021 www.thebpview.com / 718.408.8770
If you are a frequent traveler, you must have noticed that every airport has a three-letter designated code. Newark’s is EWR. It does ring funny, missing that first letter — but there is a reason behind it. When airports were initially coded with three letters, the Navy reserved all those beginning with an “N.” Thus, Newark had to make do with what was left.

Stewart It’s cozy and comfortable and just about turning into another international facility. By no stretch of the imagination does New York Stewart International Airport compete with The Big Three; it feels more like a large school auditorium than a professional airport. But when the Port Authority announced the airport would be renamed to include “international” in 2018, they made a statement, proclaiming their intent to modernize and upgrade this small-town-scale enterprise. On June 25, 2017, the airport welcomed its first scheduled

international flight, a Norwegian Air flight from Edinburgh, Scotland. That turned a new page for Stewart.
Back to the Beginnings Back in 1930, local dairy farmer and aviation aficionado Archie Stewart (and family) decided to donate 220 acres of his property to the city of Newburgh for use as an airport. The city transferred the land to the government in 1934 for $1. Stewart Airport was first used by the Military Academy at West Point for cadet aviation training. It also served as an Air Force base. In 1990, its first commercial flights were scheduled. To date, one terminal, two runways, and eight gates make up the entire compound. Some 530,000 passengers walked through Stewart’s doors in 2019, flying aboard the 33,340 flights that touched ground. Stewart Airport is located some 27 miles from Monsey, 11 miles from Kiryas Joel and 75 miles from Brooklyn, near Newburgh in Orange County. Not a bad option for some of us locals! With Stewart’s high aspirations for imminent growth, how likely are you to consider flying Stewart any time soon?

Westchester Slightly more popular than Islip, Westchester County Airport is yet another minor airstrip on the regional list. Situated in White Plains, near Southern Connecticut, it serves tri-state passengers looking for an easy, comfy experience. The airport also hosts three flight schools. Some more run-of-the-mill airlines, such as JetBlue, Delta, American and United frequent these runways. JetBlue holds the largest share, shuttling some 49% of the airport’s passengers. Atlanta, Florida and Chicago top the list of popular destinations. Westchester Airport comprises one small terminal with six gates — but only four can be used at a time. It has TSA screening, a gift shop, departure lounge and even a Dunkin’ Donuts.
Teterboro Some twelve miles from midtown Manhattan lies another airfield. This one is closed to commercial traffic, offering airport services to private aircraft only. It is a General Aviation Reliever Airport, whose goal is to remove congestion from commercial airports. Pilots pay landing fees to privately owned operators who provide airport services such as passenger handling, aircraft fueling and maintenance, and even international customs and immigrations. There is a weight limit of 100,000 pounds on the airport surface. In 2019, some 170,204 aircraft movements took place at the airport. Teterboro Airport is commonly visited for the Aviation Hall of Fame on premises. The museum is a delight for aviation enthusiasts, especially those who enjoy scrutinizing historic aircraft models and artifacts.

“SHE FLEW IN FOR MY WEDDING, AND TWICE AFTER THAT. THERE WAS TURBULENCE ON THE RETURN FLIGHT OF HER SECOND VISIT, AND THEY HAD TO GIVE HER VALIUM. SHE NEVER FLEW AGAIN.”
Chaya F.’s gentle resignation as she says this of her mother-in-law, a”h, spells out a fear that was never overcome. And while this Bubby is now surely reaping much nachas on High from the einiklach she seldom saw, what about the members of so many other families who pine for their loved ones far away, but cannot face down their debilitating fear of flight? And what do they lose if they don’t? For Shaindy, mommy to a gaggle of little kids way too young to help at all, it was the vacation she needed so, so badly. Oh, she knew that the thought of flying gave her the flutters, but air travel didn’t take up much space in her life, so that monster stayed in the closet. Until her husband went ahead and arranged a dream trip to Eretz Yisroel, for just the two of them. His excitement in planning all the fun little details gave Shaindy serious jitters, but also precluded her from sharing her rising panic. She just couldn’t rain on his parade. By the time the couple found themselves seated next to their gate and waiting for the call to board, Shaindy was faking maniacal smiles for her husband’s sake and trying to choke down the lava of fear in her. She boarded the
plane on jellied legs. Sat in the aisle seat. As if in a fog, she watched people stowing their hand luggage. The flight attendants standing at attention, the last passengers straggling onboard. Overhead compartments snapping shut. And then — Shaindy felt her heart explode out of her ribcage. She was going to die if she stayed on the plane! So she bolted. Barely gasping out, “I can’t!” to her flummoxed husband, she didn’t stop running until she reached the safety of the airport gift shop. She tried to compose herself and breathe semi-normally. She finally lifted her head and watched the terrible sight of the plane carrying her husband and packages taxiing down the runway. Too late for
him to take after his panic-ridden wife. Too late for her to enjoy their once-in-a-decade vacation. For Zalmen, it’s his enjoyment of family simchas. He could’ve kept safe in his comfort zone of the States, but with the world being a global village, who doesn’t have at least a smattering of family overseas? And when they redt your son the perfect shidduch with a Belgian girl, what should you say, that the mechutan-to-be is nebach scared of flying, next resume, please? So the shidduch happened. The couple couldn’t be happier in their warm Antwerp community. And Zalmen flies in every once in a while for another simcha in his son’s growing family, his heart stuffed in his throat. The proud zeide spends

each overseas simcha in a conflict of glowing nachas and growing anxiety for the return flight. And it doesn’t get easier. Air fear varies, as does its time of appearance. Some people suffer more before, some fall apart during, and some can’t get to themselves after. And we can all say a kapitel for the many who check off all of the above. Simi B. has a hard time only before getting to the airport. “I’m actually totally fine on planes! I love window seats and my favorite part of the plane ride is takeoff. It’s just the few nights before I’m scheduled to fly that my wacky imagination gets the better of me and literally destroys my sleep. I picture anything from a replay of 9-11 to having to parachute
THEN THERE’S PHOBIA, WHICH IS FEAR IN A WITCH’S HAT AND BRASS KNUCKLES.
out the window, all in gruesome detail. Once I’m sitting on the plane, though, I feel very rooted in reality and find that I’ve left my fears in bed.” My friend Mimi doesn’t hold back from flying, but is in knots the entire time. “I hate windows. If I sit next to one, the shade goes down. I can’t get busy with anything; I just sit there with a clenched jaw and hold my breath. And if there’s turbulence, that’s nearly the end of me!” What allows some people to fly in perfect tranquility,

while others go through the wringer? Fear is a funny thing. In moderation, it keeps us on our toes to save us from danger. Then there’s phobia, which is fear in a witch’s hat and brass knuckles. It’s when the fear is so intense that it’s out of proportion to the danger. A logical part of Shaindy may have been whispering to her that plane travel is normal and safe, but the phobia screamed way louder, and her body reacted in the form of a panic attack, as if the danger was immediate and life-threatening. Phobias are often linked to past traumas, but they can also run in families. Mimi tells me her grandmother rarely flies, “and takes tons of tranquilizers when she absolutely has to.”
Every Day T-shirts/Tops/Skirts: 1 for $35.00 - 2 for $49.99 Dresses: 1 for $99.00 - 2 for $100.00
While many fliers have minimized their fears just by educating themselves on airplane safety, here’s a validating thought that I love about phobias: Although we know our phobias are not logical, we cannot reason ourselves out of one. Stoically thinking, “It’s fine it’s fine it’s FINE” — or, worse, berating ourselves for suffering from a phobia in the first place — will not wave away the irrational fear. Phobias are real. Happily, so are the treatment options, be it counseling, exposure therapy or hypnosis. So without judgment, and a hefty dose of compassion for our very normal and human selves, we can get this monster, if not slain, then at least in the backseat. And, oh, the places we’ll go!

CURB THAT FEAR But first know this: It’s okay. It’s okay to fear. We all have a laundry list of stuff that frighten us. Acknowledge your fear: Hi, I know you’re here and you’re legit, and I’m going to take care of you so you don’t grow bigger than I am. Know Thy Enemy The number-one logical step in any battle: Identify the enemy. What is it that you’re fighting? Flight fright cannot be nailed to one specific phobia. You may have agoraphobia — a fear of public places; claustrophobia — a fear of enclosed spaces; acrophobia — fear of heights; or aerophobia — a fear of flying that usually evolves after a trauma involving an airplane, like extreme turbulence, witnessing a passenger having a panic attack, and the like.
What Triggers You? Let’s narrow this down further. There’s so much to the flying experience, and fears can be triggered by different sights and sensations. The list is long and can involve take-off, landing, turbulence, terrorism, crashes, social anxieties or being too far from home — or something else entirely.
Bring On the Calm With more insight on your fear, here are tips to tame it:
The Boro Park View’s Boggle pages! On a recent flight I watched two of my fellow travelers play pen and paper games; they’re not extinct yet. Embrace safety information: Read the safety card in the seat pocket in front of you — not to play up your fears, but to show just how prepared the plane and crew are for any eventuality that will probably never happen. Actively relax: Practice deep breathing. Actively relaxing your body goes a long way, even if you’re feeling anything but dandy, so make sure your posture is not rigid and that you don’t grip those armrests so tightly. Give yourself permission to feel fine!
Yes, fear is a troublesome weed. But what matters is that you are in control. Treat yourself to an impromptu DIY guided imagery session — especially fun for visuals: Imagine yourself packing your fear into a suitcase and stowing it in the overhead bin. There! You can’t always rid yourself of your fear, but you can choose where to put it as you travel. Bon voyage!
Educate yourself: Read up on the typical bumps and noises you may hear during the flight, and just how safe planes are built to be. For example, did you know that an aircraft must be able to support one and a half times the maximum load it would ever carry? Replace the “what ifs” that are feeding your anxiety by internalizing stable facts. Eyes ahead: Bring a picture of your destination to keep yourself in a positive place by thinking ahead. You can also visualize reaching your destination, imagining how you’ve gotten there with flying colors. Distract yourself: Bring a book you’re in the middle of and engrossed in. Listen to your favorite music. Snag a couple of
Don’t be discomfited by the vast emptiness outside your window. These are the 15,000 planes in the sky on a typical Sunday.

INSPIRING JEWS ... ONE BOOK AT A TIME
The Best-selling LIVING EMUNAH Series Continues! BY RABBI DAVID ASHEAR Adapted by Chana Nestlebaum
With more than 200,000 copies in print, Rabbi David Ashear’s life-changing Living Emunah series has helped tens of thousands of people find the happiness and serenity that come from trusting Hashem. Now, more than ever, teenagers need to strengthen their emunah in Hashem’s infinite love for them, and their understanding that everything He does is for their benefit. With its Torah insights, stories, and practical, relatable advice, Living Emunah for Teens 2 speaks to the challenges teenagers face — and takes them on an amazing journey to an emunah-filled life.
You’re a Jewish woman. You live your life by halachah.
THIS IS FOR YOU.
• Which parts of tefillah should women and girls recite? • Must a girl hear Kiddush on Shabbos? May she eat before Kiddush? • I have to be in the hospital over Shabbos. How do I light Shabbos candles? • I live by myself. Can I make Havdalah? A Woman’s Guide to Practical Halachah explores many important topics, with a focus on situations that women and girls face in their everyday lives.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines had launched their first-ever route from Amsterdam to Tel Aviv, and they’d given my father, a travel agent, tickets from New York at 25% of the cost. Loving Yiddishe father that he was, he passed on the tickets to me, and my husband and I were soon headed to Eretz Yisroel for a beautiful Pesach trip — via Amsterdam, of course. While in Yerushalayim where we were spending chol hamoed, my father notified me (and you can be sure it was not by cell phone; the process was a lot more complicated back in the early ‘70s) that our services were needed. One of his clients who’d also traveled to Eretz Yisroel for Pesach with her family would be on our return flight. Her husband, however, an Israeli citizen, found himself unable to leave the country due to some legal complications. And so Ruthie Bernath would be traveling back on her own with two babies — the younger an infant of a few weeks, and the older just fourteen months old. Even the airline’s regulations reflected the impossibility of flying outnumbered like that; they wouldn’t allow it. Would we be able to assume responsibility for one of the children on our return flight home? We agreed, eager for the opportunity to do a chesed, and so our flight home would be a little more action-filled than we had expected when we’d left our eighteen-month-old in my mother-in-law’s care for our trip. We met up with Ruthie on the tarmac as we waited in line to board the rickety portable staircase that led to the plane. No sooner had we greeted each other than the Bernath infant, too young to protest the changing of hands, was officially in my care. I’d known of Ruthie for years now, mainly from her doting aunt with whom we had familial ties, but it was the first time I actually put a face to the name. During the flight, Ruthie sat pretty close to our own seats, and between feedings and changes and soothings, we got to know each other as we shared histories and family facts and discussed topics that tie all of humanity together and Jewish women in particular. By the time we landed, she was a stranger no more. After a busy flight, we arrived in New York where we parted ways. My husband headed to Monsey with our luggage, as he needed to return to his schedule. I rushed to catch a connecting flight to Canada to pick up my toddler from my inlaws’ home in Montreal. And Ruthie was to catch her connecting flight to her hometown in Pennsylvania. The airline allowed her to travel domestically with both children, but her infant, much to my horror, was deposited to the care of an airport security officer while Ruthie collected her baggage
with her toddler who wouldn’t leave her side. Finally, after exchanging goodbyes, I boarded my flight to Canada. I was reunited at last with a confused toddler and teetering on my feet after the exertion of various time zones and back-to-back flights. I was dismayed when my father-in-law, who so kindly drove me to the airport, mistakenly took a wrong exit. Soon we were no longer sure I’d make the flight. I sat in the car, tense and tired, panicking how I’d update my father who would soon be waiting at the airport in New York, and wondering when I’d finally merit seeing the welcome sight of my own front door. By some miracle we made it to the airport in time — or so we dared to hope! The plane was about to take off, and my seat had already been sold to a standby passenger. But lugging a suitcase, handbag, my eighteen-month-old and an oversized white bakery box filled to the brim with specialty Montreal cheese danishes held together by a mere thin piece of red-and-white bakery twine that my mother-in-law would not see me off without, I ran. “Go, go!” the airport personnel hurried me along, without even a peek at the passport held between two fingers, as I ran to the terminal. “We’re about to take off!” And so I ran, ran, ran for dear life, huffing and puffing, wheels and twine and child all bumping along in a tangle of overwhelm, and… we made it — my son, my baggage, the pastries and I. At long last, I settled into my seat. After this long, long day, I was finally sitting. With my toddler. En route to home. And I even had some famous Montreal cheese danishes to revive me. And so this eventful trip came to a sweet end, but its effects rippled on. Because just one year later, Ruthie relocated, and what do you think? Her new residence was in Monsey, New York. I was more than eager to welcome her to the community, and we got to know each other on so many levels until my little ones knew the name Ruthie before they even knew my siblings’ names. And what started off between two young women on a flight home from Eretz Yisroel grew into a decades-long friendship that I cherish until today.

You’ve checked in for your flight. You’ve watched your bags roll away. Now you’re heading for those security lines. But what’s happening behind the scenes? How is the airplane you’ll be boarding being prepared for takeoff?
A CLEAN EXPERIENCE They come in close contact with the skies, fingering the seats that signify the start of an adventure… but they remain firmly grounded, handling the, well... less savory parts of this operation. Meet the CABIN CLEANING CREW! Often overworked and under-appreciated, these folks clean up everyone’s messes and restore flown aircraft so new passengers can hop aboard.
SUPERFICIAL SCRUB The heat is on! As soon as all passengers disembark, the cabin cleaning crew gets to work preparing the inside of the airplane for its next journey in the skies. TURNAROUND CLEANING takes place while an airplane is on the ground between set flight schedules. This spot clean will refresh the airplane before it takes off again. Usually performed by flight attendants and some ground crew, junk is picked up from the seats and floors, and sometimes the lavatories are cleaned.
DEEP CLEAN The GRAVEYARD SHIFT is more thorough — and peaceful. While most of the airport sleeps, the cabin cleaning crew can dig into every corner of the aircraft with more leisure. Every tray table, armrest, window and compartment is wiped down. The floor is vacuumed, carpet stains are shampooed, and minor plumbing jobs are completed as necessary. Finally, the cockpit, lavatories and galleys are restocked, and then the cleaning crew runs an extensive security search.
MAKEOVER
Some airlines give their aircraft a full scrub, replacing deteriorating parts and implementing overall maintenance, every six months or so.
ADDITIONAL MEASURES One of COVID-19’s gifts to the world of travel is stepped-up hygiene and sanitation. Cleaning is more frequent and new methods have joined the scene.
Time varies by airline, but it generally takes 30 to 40 minutes. Quick! No one wants to be blamed for the disruption of the airline’s timetable!
For example, AIRPLANE FOGGING is done by spraying a high-grade disinfectant through a fog machine. The sanitizer settles on all surfaces of the aircraft and is said to remove germs and bacteria. Additionally, high-grade HEPA filters, or High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters, keep restoring the air in the cabin every 5 to 7 minutes and remove 99.7% of airborne particles. Many hospitals use this same system in their operating rooms.

TOP 5 DIRTY SPOTS The most germs can be found on the tray table. Following closely behind are the pillows and blankets, lavatory flush button, seatbelts, and floor. Traveler’s tip: Blankets and pillows can only be considered disinfected when presented in their plastic wrap.
$12.75 PER HOUR Or $26,512 per year. That’s how much your average aircraft cabin cleaner earns in the USA.
COCKPIT PREPS The pilot’s job begins long before it’s time to take off. All details of the flight are given over to the captain. These include the destination, flight path, weather, aircraft weight and number of passengers. Usually, the copilot carries out a general inspection of the aircraft’s interior to make sure everything is in working order. The pilots test the controls in the cockpit. Pilots also do an external walk-around on the tarmac before every flight, making sure the aircraft is secure and seems ready to fly from the outside. The tires and landing gear, lights, engines and the general airframe are inspected. Safety is paramount to a successful flight.
Exact procedures vary by airport and airline.
Finally, the pilot signs a flight release document confirming that all flight information is in order, and then the crew is ready to fly!
TRACE THE BAGGAGE TRACK! You’ve placed your suitcases on the scale, had them tagged, and watched them slide away on that conveyor belt. What happens to them next?
• The suitcases are loaded into large silver containers called ULDs, or Unit Load Devices, which are then carted to the airplane.
• Robots or staff sort through the bags at the SORTING OFFICE, making sure that each piece of luggage makes its way to the correct airplane.
• Immediately after pulling up to the gate at the destination airport, “RAMPERS,” or baggage handlers, unload the ULDs and whisk them into the airport.
• Every bag is screened at a SECURITY CHECKPOINT. If anything suspicious is detected on X-ray, the bag is inspected by hand.
• Finally, to the sound of a bell, the bags roll down the slide onto the BAGGAGE RECLAIM CONVEYOR BELTS to be reunited with their owners.

From Basketball Star to Star Rosh Yeshiva Rav Shlomo’s eyes lit up as he turned to his talmid and proclaimed, “You’ve made my day!” “Rebbi,” the talmid replied, “you’ve made my life!” As a young boy, Rav Shlomo—then Stevie—was a rising sports star. He played basketball to the roar of cheering crowds at Madison Square Garden, and competed against some of the most famous athletes of the time. Yet despite it all, his unquenchable spiritual thirst led him to bask in the holiness of Torah giants such as Rav Avigdor Miller and Rav Yehuda Davis, and become an extraordinary gadol in his own right. Though his official position was that of a rebbi, and then rosh yeshivah, at Yeshivah Zichron Mayir of Mountaindale, Rav Shlomo was so much more than that. To his talmidim, he was an impactful rebbi, a caring father, and a best friend all at once. Indeed, his giant heart overflowing with love—both for his Creator and his fellow—moved him to devote his life to uplifting and helping every Jew he encountered. Come feel the warmth of Rav Shlomo’s smile, the love in his trademark bear hug, and the inspiration in the lessons he imparted. By Rabbi Nachman Rothenberg

The Torah approach to dealing with the struggling teen. A mustread for parents, educators, mentors, professionals and rabbanim . Includes section on the Tomer Devorah and The 13 Attributes of Mercy. Invaluable aid to all parents wishing to keep their children "on the derech". The issues and questions that arise in the wake of a child straying from the Torah path are as innumerable as they are excruciatingly painful. Nowhere do we see the importance of being properly guided by da'as Torah as in this difficult scenario. Readers will find these pages filled with valuable tools and skills to aid their chinuch efforts in our tumultuous times, so that we can, with Hashem's help, raise every Jewish child to enthusiastically embrace a life of Torah and mitzvos.
